Our meal started off with amazing homemade chips and guacamole, a tangy fresh margarita for the lady, and a drink for me made out of horchata and rum (seriously, why can't I get this everywhere I go?). And then our food came. Probably the best invention from El Salvador is the pupusa: basically a really thick tortilla (handmade out of corn masa) stuffed with beans, cheese, and/or pork. And it's two bucks! I also got a great gordita de lengua (nothing like the greasy sad gordita you would get at most Mexican restaurants) and the chicken tinga torta—more or less the best chicken sandwich I've ever had on yummy homemade bread. Oh, and in case the word "authentic" makes you think of a dark hole-in-the-wall with checkerboard tables, never fear! El Tepeyac has a bright, modern look and great service. You can tell that someone has really taken the time to make this place perfect.
