Landguard Fort, located at the mouth of the River Orwell near Felixstowe, Suffolk, is one of England’s most significant coastal fortifications, with a rich history spanning nearly 450 years.

The fort’s origins trace back to 1540 when King Henry VIII commissioned the first fortifications. The current Grade I listed structure dates from the mid-18th century, with substantial 19th and 20th-century additions. It's quite a few years since I last visited Landguard Fort and it is certainly worth a couple of hours of anybody's time. The history of the place is astonishing, although the current buildings only date back to the 18th century. On a blisteringly hot June Saturday, it was the coolest place in town and I, for one, was grateful to escape the sun's rays.
In fact, my first port of call was to the tearoom, where I partook of an excellent cup of Yorkshire Tea and a couple of nice cakes, baked by a local woman. My bill - a bargain £4.60.
As I supped, two of the many elderly volunteers, without whom the place could not open, as there are only two full-time staff, told me that it had been a really quiet day, blaming problems with the Orwell Bridge and the heat.
So I virtually had the place to myself, enjoying the excellent audio guide I had downloaded to my phone as I wandered around. From minelaying to cold war control and World War 1 and 2 sea and air defences, there's a lot to take in.
My only criticism is that they need a lot more seats for folk like me to perch on for a moment or two, because it's quite a long trek with a fair few stairs. In fact, I 'abandoned ship' on the upper floor simply because I was weary and, as an English Heritage Member who lives just a 15 minute cycle ride away, I can pop in again tomorrow and the next day as well, if only for a nice cup of tea and a bit of home baking.

A great afternoon out for three generations including under sevens. The children enjoyed the Owl Trail and I enjoyed all of the exhibits. Having grown up in Felixstowe there was still so much fascinating information to discover. The staff were extremely helpful and welcoming. We will visit again.

Felixstowe Pier is a fond childhood memory. I was back there last week and its feels like it hasn't changed much, but of course it has.
The pier used to be fully walkable. Now it is barricaded just behind the amusement arcades. The original structure (built 1905, the same year as the Felix Hotel (now Harvest House)) was much longer than it is currently but has been shortened over the years. It used to be a good walk, not sure if it is ever planned to be reopened and seems to be a semi-derelict landing strip for seagulls.
The amusement arcade had a major refurbishment around 2017, the outside looks really good and there's some good ice-cream and fish and chips available. The arcade inside is clean, got some decent amusements and plenty of 2p penny-drop machines if you're the gambling type.
Even on the weekend there were a few parking spots available right outside the pier. Parking was only £1.50 for a couple of hours (and then free from 6pm) with the machines only taking cash. Good couple of hours spent reliving my youth.

A very fun, tidy and exposed links golf course.
Firstly, the condition of the course was fantastic. Although some of the bunkers were very wet and heavy (expected with how much rain there’s been!), tee to green was otherwise a delight to play.
The wind was particularly strong but took nothing away from the fun we had on this proper links course.
There was a range, pro shop and clubhouse. The clubhouse was a warm and welcoming for a pint after being windswept for 4 hours.

This is a superb links course. We played the 18-hole Martello late July and the course was in excellent condition: tee boxes were great, fairways exceptional and greens were absolutely immaculate. The course itself is a joy to play: every hole is different and interesting and there is a healthy balance of Par 3s, 4s and 5s of varying lengths. The standout hole has to be 13, where you tee off with a spectacular view of the coastline to the east and the eponymous Martello tower in front, whilst faced with glorious undulating fairways and bunkers left and right - definitely felt the most ‘linksy’ hole!
The Club itself seems to be in a really good place with a modern new clubhouse and cafe due for completion next year. It’s a must-play for any Suffolk golfing itinerary and I cannot wait to return!

Well to say that this was my second home from when I was a boy is sad to say the least. Anyway now I need to set aside my personal opinion and it's like this if you are new and just visiting the area then by all means Felixstowe is a lovely and off-peak beautifully quiet and the beach has been looked after. Alot more stones than sand but I think they attempted to make it more comfortable. so as long as you are not making it home it could be rather lovely now what I mean by this is it isn't just the buildings that have been left behind. It has become a hive for bad banger boy racers that race narrow beach Road beeping and little kids everywhere and allot of other trouble. Also the majority demographic of the people who frequent the area are your run of the mill thugs, loud girls and all seem to be looking for trouble with every group aggressively holding their ground and waiting for a reaction. I did go on a really hot and busy day so yes that doesn't paint a complete picture but I honestly believe it's still a lovely visit for someone who hasn't been.

We spent a wonderful afternoon at Felixstowe South Beach, and it turned into one of those rare days you wish you could bottle up forever. The weather couldn’t have been better — clear blue skies, a calm breeze, and the sea sparkling like it had been polished just for us.
The beach itself is clean, with soft pebbles and plenty of space to relax. We dipped our feet in the cool water — Lulu, Aunty, and Sraboni Bhabi were having the time of their lives splashing around and taking fun photos. The sound of the waves made everything feel peaceful, while the lively seafront added just the right amount of energy.
Parking was convenient, and there were lots of nearby spots to grab snacks or a coffee. The panoramic views were stunning — the perfect backdrop for family pictures and those little moments you never forget.

Having been persuaded by friends that the reports of the Centre being run down and not very clean were exaggerated, I signed up for the £12 local pensioner's membership and booked an early morning lane swim at 0700. A bargain at £3.80, especially as I could have stayed for two hours.

Filth in the resultant space. Shelves are missing in the showers, door locks absent, the list goes on and on. I shudder to think what nasty bacteria is lurking in almost every area imaginable. Every area is just grubby.
Places Leisure, who have the contract to run the Centre, are a very big operator, but someone seems to be putting profits above hygiene, which is completely unacceptable.

They do a fish and chips special on a Friday evening between 4 and 6pm. I came off the 1610 ferry from Harwich expecting it to be packed, but it was surprisingly quiet. We visited here on a trip to the coast, recently. You have to love the forts of this era, they are stout, grand, and thought provoking in their construction. This fort has been lovingly restored over time and is a real gem to visit. All of the volunteers were very helpful. Needed the £4 guide to properly understand the site, some would see this as a negative but we saw it as contributing to its upkeep; it's only £4. The entrance to the parking is tight, but we managed it in an l200 pickup. Lots of spaces to use when you get to the fort and it's free to use. Look out for the blue sign to find the entrance to the parking asnit could easily be mistaken for an alleyway, yes it's that tight. There is a stairs lift in one of the stairs wells, so it's possible for elderly and disabled to get into the fort from the top, it's not wheel chair friendly though, in my opinion.

The amount of time us drivers spend waiting for cranes to move to us is a joke. Gorgeous history and good amenities. We've been going to Felixstowe for a good few years now from Cambridgeshire, and it just gets better each time. A lovely place to walk around. Very hard to park on a nice day. Everyone comes down to the beach to sit on it and tan. If your not into that like me, then you can stroll through the gardens and down the highstreet. Plenty of pubs along the way and food places. We loved our visit here. I've never been before but my sister recommended it and I'm glad she did. It's a bit more basic than the one located on the pier, mainly with 2 p machines etc but that's what I loved about it. Plus it was much less noisy! I find (and so too do my children) find noisy places really challenging to be in and often we can't stay for much time. However, as here was quieter and less busy we were able to play happily and comfortably. The staff were super friendly and helpful. We will come back when we are next in.
