VIP tickets for the UB40 concert with Josh Tatofi and Katchafire as opening guest musicians.
Josh Tatofi and his crew were incredibly talented with several tunes of various genres! Such a beautiful voice and great musicians. I would definitely pay to see them perform again.
Katchafire came from New Zealand and were very disappointing. Every song sounded like the one before and it all seemed like a loud blur.
The biggest disappointment was UB40. We all waited 45 minutes for the band to set up, only to hear a loud blur of noise and echo. Not a single song was recognizable. We left early, as did our friends. We stayed through rain and instrument changes, paid $100 extra for each of us for VIP tickets, only for a dud of a concert. Not worth it and never again.
The venue is nice, lots of security, helpful staff and good food, although overpriced beverages.
Parking cost is atrocious. $25 in the MACC parking lot and $10 in every overflow parking lot. Money making opportunities for the MACC at every turn. A bit much.

We started out the year with Kris Kristofferson and a surprise guest performance by Willie Nelson and just enjoyed The California Honey Drops and Bonnie Raitt!! Beautiful Venue, well organized and perfect weather!

This venue is tried and true. Large enough for a crowd of 5000, this afternoon-to-evening fundraiser, for Maui fire victims delivered, for 3000- supporters, neighbors, and family members. The Maui Swap Meet is a diverse, local focused collective offering many Hawaii centric gifts and goods that are great to look through. The variety is good with food, trinkets, and gifts for those back at home within arms reach. Some things are a bit overpriced but we understand that is due to small business needs, still unfortunate to see something you bought for $20 available at ABC for $10 a few days later.
We got a few gifts for our dog and others and some stuff for us and we were happy with the quality of them which is all you can really ask for in a market. The food options were also much better than expected. We had such a great time exploring the Maui Swap Meet! It’s the perfect mix of everything — from beautiful handmade crafts and local art to fresh produce, flowers, baked goods, and island-made snacks. If you like plants, appreciate xeriscaping, are intrigued by ethnobotany, enjoy history and strolling through pretty places, this is a WONDERFUL way to pass an hour! You can deep dive and spend longer but 30-60 mins will give you good appreciation.
Plants featured have ethnobotanical significance rather than typical showy gardens. You can see plants from several islands, including endangered plants not possible elsewhere. Learn which plants provided dyes, material for clothing and sails, were used in hula, religious offerings, torch oil etc.
The audio tour was informative and the voices were pleasant. (If you've ever had audio tours with an annoying voice you know what I mean)
There were classes on traditional plant use the day we visited. Students were preparing and weaving ahu'awa cordage, hala mats and ipu (gourd) preparation. The place is run and maintained by volunteers. They sell propagated plants, but are distributing plants for free to anyone affected by recent fires. This alone makes your $10 entry fee worth it.
There is shade and many places to sit in case anyone in your party is slightly less interested in plants than you are. It's mostly flat in case you have any one with mobility issues.
Free parking in front of the gardens, though the signage is confusing.
My only suggestion for improvement, and this is because I see blank canvases everywhere:
The gardens are on the site on an old zoo and garden, so there are little cement buildings that used to house animal displays. They are pretty stark and bleak. They should have one of the many talented island artists mural the heck out of them. I'm thinking pollinators, birds, animals previously held there. Each little building could have a theme.
Overall I learned new things, got in some steps and had nice conversations with volunteers. #winning

They were obviously very competent with the equipment and safety procedures and their banter with the zip liners and each other made the experience hilarious. For our family of four and inexperienced zip liners- this was perfect! We have two younger kids (5 and 8) and they loved it! There is more than just zip lining here as well. It’s part of a plantation with a shop, other tour options, and a truly amazing restaurant that was worth the trip by itself. Plus the views zip lining and on the ground were spectacular. We lucked out with the time of year and we were able to get lots of one on one attention which definitely made it even more memorable for our kids. We decided to play "tourist" one Sunday afternoon which brought me and two of my buddies here. I've driven by it a million times but never stopped to observe, let alone learn its history.
THE GOOD 'OL DAYS:
The brackish water ponds of Kanaha are actually one of two (the other is called Mauoni) swampy marshlands that spanned from its current location all the way west to where Queen Kaahumanu Center is now. Ancient Hawaiians used portions of it for fish cultivation when ocean fishing was prohibited during the spawning season.
Most of the ponds naturally dried up or were filled in with debris dredged from Kahului Harbor back in the early 1900's. The (now defunct) Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar (HC&S) company donated the land to the US Navy. The pond was then deemed a wildlife sanctuary in the 1950's, and a registered natural landmark in 1971. It is home to Hawaiian Stilts & Coots, and other migratory birds that flock to its safe haven.
CURRENT DAY:
The sanctuary is now under State of Hawaii jurisdiction. Entry is free. A single pathway leads to a small covered lookout area that offers a 360-degree view of the ponds. Though there wasn't much to see in terms of fowl, learning about its history was priceless to me.

Stopped here to kill time before another event. As it is close to the Kahului Airport we drove by not sure what it was. We had to look it up. There's a gated pathway leading to an observation building. A small cement building with open views on all sides and a bench to sit on and stay shaded. It was super windy over the water, which felt nice and gave the birds something to play on. We saw fish burrowing in the mud in the shallow waters. Plus TONS of small fish swimming around and in schools. The Ae'o (Hawaiian stilt) were standing in the waters scooping the fish up. They were so cool. Then I turned around and a 'Auku'u (black crowned night heron) was just a few feet from me sitting on what appeared to be a nest. I didn't even see it land. Beautiful bird. Then it took flight and we watched it glide for a bit appearing to be hunting over the water before flying off. Last we saw 3 'Alae ke' oke'o (Hawaiian coot) gliding and landing in the shallow waters. They even landed lining up like ducks in a row before taking off again. So cool watching them fly around. It was so peaceful and we were glad we stopped to check it out. I would recommend bringing binoculars and wearing a hat to shade your eyes for better viewing of the animals. Only wish there were more areas to visit, but understand that's it's a preserve meant to be undisturbed. Sorry, I only took video of the 3 coots.

You pull up onto a beautifully maintained ranch and ride up around through many fields where their long horned cattle graze. You get views of the ocean as well as the incredible ridged mountains. John was our trail guide and I appreciated how straightforward and no nonsense he was. It’s not your typical flashy tourist trap place. If you’re here to ride and love horses, that’s what you’ll get. I was really surprised to find a hands-on experience being offered and was so excited! I wanted a horse ride in Maui that was more hands-on and intimate, not where one horse just follows the other, so I chose the Ranch ride. The ranch is beautiful, and you can tell the horses are well taken care of. I used to ride when I was younger, but hadn't in 20 years, and managed to forget a lot of what I was taught back then. Yod had me lead my horse to the arena where he showed me the basics of riding again. He's an excellent instructor and super patient. My wife and I went horseback riding at Makani Olu Ranch and had a great time. Neither of us had done a lot of horseback riding previously, so we got the beginner experience. The horses we rode (Okie and Clyde) were very nice and easy to handle, but not so overly docile that they just walked the trail no matter what we did ourselves. Stopped by Tin Roof and honestly left a little disappointed. The chicken had decent seasoning on top, but the sauce was not it, really heavy and the kind of flavor you get sick of very quickly. The rice was fine, but overall the bowl just didn’t come together the way I expected.

It's a pretty nice place for its age. All the seats seem to have a great view of the stage. It's not a huge theater so you get an intimate feeling.

I've passed by this place numerous times but never had a reason to stop by until recently. I saw a poster for an exhibit they were having entitled "Internment: Stories from Maui". I immediately thought that my mom would like to see it and she agreed.
THE CENTER:
Opening in 1991 on two acres donated from Alexander & Baldwin, the Sons & Daughters of the 442 was spearheaded by Leonard Oka, the son of 442 veteran Clarence Oka. The mission was to honor the Nisei Veterans of WWII with memorabilia, artifacts and its history. Currently, the facility consists of a museum, education center, offices, conference room and is also home to the Maui Adult Day Care and Kansha Preschool, both of which are open to the public.
INTERNMENT EXHIBIT:
The simple exhibit was showcased in the complex's Education Center. The majority of the displays were poster boards with info on some families and individuals who endured internment on Maui. Other pieces included photo copies of handwritten letters, log books, a few photos and a looping video that I didn't watch. I can only stand and read info for a hair until I get bored and antsy, so I took pics of each display (and posted to this page) so I could read in the comforts of home. Overall it was a nice effort as I'm sure gathering stories, photos and artifacts in this day and age would be next to impossible due to the timeline.

It's in an industrial area, so I needed to travel further to see what else Maui had to offer, was hoping to take a tour in Lahaina, but because of the great fire most things was basically canceled.

My husband loves aviation and he has always wanted to be in a helicopter and so for our 10 year anniversary, I was brave enough to agree to go on this helicopter tour. Despite a tsunami warning that caused most businesses to close and staff to leave, one incredibly kind and gracious lady stayed behind to honor our appointment. It is a wilde style beach & kitesurfing spot, so dont expect any infrastructure here. There is only a long fabulous beach line, some rocks closer to the city and lots of huge turtles 🐢 in the water when you kitesurf, which is fantastic.
Along the beach there are palms 🌴, so you can hide your equipment & yourself from the sun.
There are two parking lots: one is with asphalt for about 20 cars and another one closer to the city is quite spontaneous one along the road that leads to the beach and its totally sandy, under the trees in some parts, for about 10 cars.
There is a lifeguard house on the beach, but i never saw anybody there 🤔
No currents here and no sharks, so no extra risque to stay in the waters.
The windsurfers normally ride on the right side of the beach and farer from the land line, kitesurfers - on the left side, closer to the beach and the city.

This beautiful park has a great perimeter trail, a playground, tennis courts with lights, and an awesome disc golf course. There are two multi use fields and bathrooms on the north side. There is also a community center building that can be reserved for functions like birthdays or graduation parties. I went her for the disc golf course. The first 4 holes were easy to navigate, but then it got hard. I was able to figure out the next 4 holes by using an app where people post pictures of the tee, and baskets. Not all tees have a marker, or pad. Most have a piece of carpet as a tee, which works if you can find it.
I ended up walking the next few hole to see if I could figure it out for a potential next visit. As I was walking to my car a guy asked how I liked the course, and if I found my way. There are 2 rock walls that have some smaller fish once you get a little further out
Paddle boarders with sails also take off from this area. Seems very calm for elders to navigate the water with ease.
Pretty shells and even a penny that was water bound for awhile was found on shore.
Please bring a bag to remove walked in plastic as well as some shore debris. Let us leave it better for our children that we found it

While this is a public park, it may not seem like it on the façade due to two permanent structures occupying the land and inventory of canoes laying all over the place. I'm not sure how or why a canoe club ended up here but it is what it is!
THE PARK:
Hoaloha Park is about two acres in size, with a sandy beach and very protected waters as it sits in a bay shielded by Kahului Harbor and a manmade peninsula. Grassy areas are expansive and stretch from the Maui Seaside Hotel border on the west end to the former Chart House and Hideaway Restaurant (still vacant building) to the east. While there are facilities such as restrooms, it's not available to the public as they're inside of the canoe club's buildings. Being literally next to Kahului Harbor, I wouldn't suggest swimming here as the amount of ship traffic simply pollutes the waters. Come canoe season, they sometimes hold regatta races here and the area gets infested with people and cars.
There are however, some positives to this beach especially on the west end near the hotels where you can perch with a great view of the cruise ships coming in and out of port on certain days. And, because the beach isn't "beach-worthy" especially in the eyes of tourists, it's always empty! There aren't any sunset or neighbor island views, but that's the trade-off. I've been known to crack open a few and participate in the ship-watching activity myself, lol. It's a quiet place too as the highways are set back a nice distance. While there are nicer beaches on Maui, how often can you have one all to yourself?
OVERALL:
You're not missing out on much. Find another park. LOL.

A convenient spot close to home. I often walk the dogs here, to run, swim and sugarcoat themselves with sand. It's great that they have a few showers and spigots to hose them down after. It does not get too crowded here but often a few fishermen, wind surfers, and paddlers come through when the elements are just right. However, if you walk towards Maui beach hotel it's often empty and prime for some relaxation.

I pretty much only wear Blue Ginger tops daily. The rayon voile is one of the few fabrics that keep me cool in the Kahului heat. Store personnel are all lovely people. The only thing is the store is always quite warm that I want to get in and out as quickly as possible. I noticed the same warm temperature at the Wailea store as well. I also wish that my favorite top style (Bay top/blouse) would be brought back or other top styles be added as not all current rotating styles work for my body type. Although the new and beautiful prints keep me coming back!
