I petitioned the city to build a dog park and after nearly 10 years and many volunteers, it was build. However, the city doesn’t maintain it well. Maybe every few months they do a clean up. There’s no grass and the gates are sagging. There’s also NO water for dogs inside which blows my mind. You have to exit the park to let your dog drink. Why they didn’t build a separate small dog area within the park was foolish. The rocks and gravel that cover the park get super hot in summer. Many tripping hazards for people with walking issues or elderly people. Heck, I trip over rocks and exposed water lines all the time. The trees aren’t pruned correctly if at all. And the city lets the weeds grow everywhere until the park is covered…then they’ll remove them. Most dog parks I go to around the country close for a day a week or every two weeks and do regular maintenance (i.e. Sugarland Dog Park near Houston). There’s also no shade. No water feature for dogs to swim in. I’m very disappointed how the park is treated as a secondary thought by city officials. If the city would have volunteer days to pick up dog poo or teach people how to use the park correctly and keep the park well maintained then people would use it and take care of it. Doesn’t help that the homeless like to destroy the area around it. This park was not what I envisioned when I set out to create a dog friendly and community friendly public space.
