Festival-goers catch on fast when someone is “just a volunteer,” and there was a moment I felt directly watched by people who seemingly tried to steal. Had anything gone missing, I’m not sure what kind of support or protection I would have had. This is why, I believe there should be two volunteers together watching a booth. It felt like I was expected to somehow “just know” how the festival works, how things work, what to do, where to go, and how to represent vendors without being equipped or empowered. That’s a lot to ask of anyone, especially those who thrive on structure and clarity. I didn’t feel like I had much purpose or support, and as someone who was sincerely trying to contribute, that left me feeling undervalued. Volunteers give their time and energy freely the least that can be offered in return is orientation, product knowledge if expected to manage booths. Vendors are more concerned about making sales, and I noticed that most were rather outgoing expressing product information with festival attendees instead.
