If you are expecting a posh experience, prefer breakfast served late in the morning so you can sleep in, then you would be best having breakfast at one of the island restaurants or perhaps avoiding Ocracoke and the Crews Inn altogether. This unique place is charming and comfortable. We will be back and hope Alton keeps it running for many more years (and is spared from any more hurricanes like Dorian!) Below is my earlier review. We stayed at the Crews Inn in July 2021 for several nights. Thrilled to learn it had reopened after being closed for 18 months for repairs following Hurricane Dorian. Alton has done a beautiful job renovating the 19th century structure. It is a simple and gracious place to stay. As another reviewer stated, the Crews Inn isn’t for everyone nor is Ocracoke. There is no TV but with several places to sit and chat with other guests, it encourages conversations. Set back from the road, down a sandy lane, with a screened-in porch and an open porch in the rear, it is located right in the center of the village, yet the location feels very private as the inn is surrounded by natural gardens and beautiful live oak trees. Each room has a fan and air conditioning, much appreciated in July. However, there was a nice breeze while we were there and it was lovely sitting in the rocking chairs on the back porch, reading a book or chatting with the other guests. As soon as we arrived, we walked to the Slushy Stand and rented bikes. Once you’re on the island, you can leave your car at the inn and bike everywhere, including to the beach with lifeguards. Years ago, a safe, wide paved path for biking and walking was built from the village to the National Seashore swimming area. It’s approximately 2-3 miles from the inn to the beach but a beautiful bike ride. If you have beach gear to lug, you’ll likely want to drive. Once you’re at the swimming beach, there are restrooms and a water station for rinsing off. We enjoyed showering in the Crews Inn’s spacious outdoor shower after visiting the beach. The local restaurants were better than ever. Highly recommended is The Flying Melon, an easy walk from the inn. We also ate twice at SMcNallys on silver lake where we enjoyed their great salads, shrimp, seafood, and curly fries. There’s nothing luxurious about Ocracoke. If you are looking for a resort experience, stay away but if you enjoy the slow and simple life, there’s no better place to stay than the Crews Inn.

We thorough enjoyed the laid back and low key access to the house and spent a fair amount of time enjoying the swing on the wraparound porch. I was sorry we couldn't stay longer, but we had to catch a very early ferry ride and missed out on breakfast.
