We have been frequent customers since Tavolata in Boise opened, even bringing out of town family in to try it. The Tavolata salad and all the hand made pastas have historically been amazing. We often told people- this is the best happy hour in town. We even ordered our pre-made Thanksgiving dinner from Tavolata this year and it was amazing! However… Yesterday, after traveling for weeks, we went to eat at the bar, which was not as packed as we would typically expect for a Thursday evening. We quickly learned why: we ordered a variety of our favorites and learned they changed the recipes on most of our favorite dishes. When we asked the wait staff, they quickly apologized and then told us- yes, “corporate” changed the recipes. In our opinion, this was as a terrible move. This one negative experience changed our impression overall, regardless of the several amazing food experiences we have had here. Unfortunately, we will not return….we don’t take eating a meal full of pasta and carbs lightly…while it’s been ‘worth it’ every other time we’ve dined at Tavolata, we won’t take that chance again. After dinner was cleared, we waited & waited for the desserts to arrive, w/ no offer of coffee & not sure why this course the timing was so much longer. I understand that the dessert course is classically served w/ a spoon, but a hard crust pecan tart (pie) is difficult to cut into w/ a spoon & shards of crust did fly across the table, still it was the most delicious item of the evening. The house made whipped cream had an odd texture, but excellent flavor. The chocolate mousse was a disappointment. Much to airy, but dense, almost cake-like, at the same time without the depth of chocolate that was expected. Another odd texture & it was not entirely consumed as the pecan tart was. Never did a manager appear in the dining room & although there wasn't anything outstand to comment on, it would have been nice to receive a holiday greeting from a manager at such a named fine dining restaurant. Yes, the server did check on us several times, but again, nothing so egregious to voice a complaint over & we did tip above 20%. Would we return? Yes, we have heard great things about their regular Italian menu & it will be nice to dine on the upper terrace come spring, but we will approach w/ appropriately lowered expectations. Our server was Brinley, who was so sweet and kind. She went above and beyond to check in on us and provided amazing service. She was even able to change the sauce on the pizza for me as I was craving a white pizza! We got the calamari, margarita pizza, ravioli and tiramisu for dinner and it was all 10/10. The ambiance was also super calm and romantic. The valentines service was super special, we got a card and chocolates and even the pizza was heart shaped! Super memorable! Overall our experience was so lovely, everyone was so kind and friendly and it felt very welcoming. Being pregnant I was specially craving real Italian and this perfectly satisfied the craving!
