Gaucho Bistec (Tomahawk ribeye steak): The quality of beef, great. The scallions and the sea salt, great. What is sad is that there is no option whatsoever to get a sauce alongside it. We got a bottle of Avinyo, cava BRUT ROSE, Penedés. For the meal, I personally feel it pairs perfectly with everything and brings the whole meal together. My take is that if you are more of a "go natural" and do not add layers to the flavors in dishes kind of a person, you will like it a little more than I did. Came here on a Tuesday night for a date around 7:30 for dinner and drinks. We had an 8:00 reservation but we were able to grab a spot at the bar around 7:30 for drinks, and then we were seated early at about 10 to. We each started with a cocktail - the cocktail menu was full of drinks with lots of words I didn't recognize, but the bartender was nice enough to make recommendations and my drink came out nicely. Complicated, but good. My date had an old fashioned and was impressed. As far as food, we ordered: Mussels Escabeche - REALLY nicely done. Super high quality olive oil with a jolt of spice but nothing too crazy. The sauce was sooo addicting, I think I ate the whole basket of bread just because I was dipping it in the sauce. The bread was great, too. Soft and fresh-baked and delicious. Pintxo Flight - glad we tried it but next time I'd just order my one or two favorites. Also, these are blatantly not authentic pintxos, but most of them were still delicious. The croqueta was nice and not too oily for something fried, but I could have used more mushroom. Deviled eggs are usually a favorite of mine and I love smoked trout, but I wasn't a huge fan of this one, it just wasn't doing anything special for me. The chorizo and corn toast was great, the corn was nice and crunchy. The pintxo gilda was nice and salty from the anchovies and had nice spice to it, but wasn't overly salty the way anchovies can be. The aprium and black olive had a nice sweetness from the fruit and I enjoyed that one as well. Duck and Fig Terrina - this was probably the standout of the night. I could have eaten this dish forever. The almond sherry relish balanced out some of the fat from the duck and the fig was a nice accent on top. There was a great black pepper flavor that came through the terrine at just the right level, not overwhelming but definitely present. The dish came with buttered toast pieces, but I preferred it on the soft bread. Halibut Crudo - not a favorite, this dish didn't speak to me in any special way and there wasn't a ton of fish. Patatas Bravas - these came covered in sauce instead of the sauce on the side, as they're typically served. They were surprisingly crispy for being covered in sauce, but the sauce was overwhelming and very garlicky. It would have been better on the side, and in small amounts, I think the huge flavor it brought would have been a benefit. I was a fan of the aioli served on the side, it somehow felt like a better balance of garlic. This was a HUGE portion though, and we couldn't finish it. Overall, this was great Spanish food. Not super authentic Basque, but solidly Spanish inspired. It delivered on both food and ambience in ways that most Spanish-inspired places in SF usually fail to do, instead bordering on cheesy or over-the-top. It was a great, cozy spot for a date but I could also see it being a great place for a girls night or special occasion. I'll definitely be back to try more!
