From the moment we arrived at the hotel the staff couldn't do enough for us. From the door porter to the all the reception crew, the way we were treated we honestly felt like we were the most important people in the hotel and we were even given a free upgrade to an executive room which was lovely. After giving us an extremely early check in (around 10:30 am) we were taken to our room by one of the porters who insisted on taking our bags for us which was nice. The room was absolutely luxurious, extremely spacious with a huge bed. The huge bathroom was also immaculate. The hotel itself is so luxurious, from the reception area to the bar/restaurant and the amazing Palm Court tea room. Unfortunately we didn't have time to experience the Palm Court as we had other plans but will definitely use it when we return. We used the Bar Prince on a couple of occasions and once again all the staff we encountered were so professional, friendly, polite and immaculately turned out. Over the years years me and my wife have stopped at some lovely hotels around the world but we can honestly say that our experience at the Balmoral was the best we've ever had. We we're so sad when we had to check out but we will definitely be returning to this wonderful hotel in the beautiful city. The spa is not included… that information is conveniently not made obvious on the website and we were informed when checking in, not the end of the world but coupled with having to pay (a lot) extra for breakfast when checking in this was a disappointing way to arrive as we were hoping to use the spa throughout our stay and you have to pre book a 3 hour slot making hopping in and out not an option like most hotels. The spa is extremely disappointing, water was freezing, no view as promised and very dirty in the corners, outdated and crumbling in areas with rude staff and nowhere near enough seats for everyone so expect to not be able to sit down. The club lounge is nice and well maintained, well worth the upgrade and rooms are nice, spacious and clean. However do not expect to sleep a wink, that was the most uncomfortable bed of our life and we tossed and turned all the nights we were here. If you’re looking for a spa hotel, book elsewhere, if you want a Marriott then it’s fine but more comfy to sleep on the floor!

The toilets in the downstairs main bar weren't great in the mens (my husband said mens ) the toilets were extremely unclean, we assume people were perhaps using the toilet who were not staying at the hotel . The toilets need checking more often. The concierge staff especially the two gents on the front door on Saturday afternoon were outstanding so welcoming and helpful. The room was beautiful and huge. I do feel they should absolutely fill the mini bar to give the hotel more of an exclusive feel. This was a bit of a disappointment. All 5 star hotels we've stayed in have a stocked mini bar . The dressing gowns aren't good they could do with longer sleeves they are not very comfortable. Also the slippers were extremely basic. I would feel for the family rooms they should add some extra options. We always like to buy or be gifted a small soft toy as a souvenir. Also many 5 star hotels offer dressing gowns and slippers for the children. All in a great stay however could benefit from some extras .

We had a couple of needs and staff went way over what was expected. The building simply oozes with slightly understated elegance. The Hilton group has done a fantastic job maintaining a large part of the integrity of the building by not replacing the old doors and leaving dents and divets in much of the woodwork around the hotel. The buffet breakfast was typical but the breakfast ordered off the menu was very good. One morning i ordered an omellete with everything they offered save the jalapeño. The eggs were cooked thru and well, not always a guarantee in many countries. But most important, all of the ingredients were mixed into the eggs prior to cooking. Call me persnickety if you will, but that made the experience perfect. Most omellete chefs simply fold the cooked egg over the veg and meats and voila, an omelette is born. For me, that omellette made my day as I left for the real Mary's close. Stay here if you can...Im a platinum level Hilton Honors member and this is not your parents Hilton....check it out and you will understand. If your travels do not allow a stay here, stop in for afternoon tea in the main central atrium area. It is lovely. And if your lucky, you will meet Lucas? The service overall was outstanding, everyone we spoke to was friendly and helpful. Wound personally say this is a 4.5 star hotel, much better than other 4 stars I’ve stayed in! Highly recommend.

The view from the roof terrace is clearly incredible with the 360 degree aspect to see the city, mountains and sea. I went to the spa and had two wonderful treatments with Sarah and on another occasion Naha, both excellent wellness therapists. The spa is a very nurturing place to escape the city bustle. The location of the hotel is wonderfully convenient to enjoy the amazing city of Edinburgh.

I emailed the GM who was quick to reach out but when I told him what my issue was, he ignored me for over a month and only followed up when I said I’d be cancelling other trips, and leaving a review. Again he chose to ignore when I asked for an explanation. This is not the level of service I expect or am used to from Gleneagles and it’s discriminatory and disappointing. If we are guests have to put with the smell and hair and barking of dogs in areas of the hotel, why would a cat who is simply staying in the bedroom I have paid for, be an issue?
