Live music will become a staple of the bar, especially jazz and it is very well worth a visit for either a great wine or an interesting meal. Ed and his staff to my mind have three essential principals and boy do they stick to them! First is vision – taking Middle Eastern food and drawing the best of Asian cuisine is genius – it is novel but also hugely successful. Principle number one – tick! Second is consistency – now this must come from week in week out, every dish as good as the last as well as every different dish offering something that make you think’ hmm that might be my favourite but…’ Everything I have tried has been amazing, different if flavour and texture from the regular dishes to the specials, from the savoury to the sweets. They do have quite a limited menu and I reckon this is to their advantage – every dish shines, every dishes is a delight, always. Finally – the principle of customer service – those peoepl are busy, sometimes it is wet and cold, sometimes people are impatient, the staff just keep smiling and maintain their enthusiasm – again this gives it a special experience. These three principles are an excellent ‘yamzaj’ Nothing is perfect and if I could make two minor comments, first sometime sit is REALLY busy and you might have to wait, remember you are waiting for excellent freshly prepared food – I spoke with Ed about this and I know he had plans to increase the fryers. My second comment is ‘salt’ – things are bursting with flavour and sometimes can feel a tad too salty – I think for me it is a treat and I don’t mind but maybe take it a notch back? But this clearly is the best takeaway in Exeter, maybe the best takeaway I have ever had? And I havnt even mentioned the sauces which are also fabulous. I really think it is. What Ed and team deserve and what we deserve is a proper full-on sit-down restaurant and I hope, in time, that that will become a reality. Ed and team thank you for making the occasional Monday evening a delight on the palate in our house.
