Jahaj Mahal in Mandu is a very beautiful and well maintained site to visit over. Along with old forts and ponds...it has multiple locations to click lovely photos and frame. It is believed to be build for entertainment by the king to have good time in his haram.
This is around 60 km from Indore in Mandu town. There are other monuments in town as well. It is maintained by ASI and have a fee of Rs 25 per person.

It is one of a set buildings making up the royal palace complex at Mandu, which consists of the Jahaz Mahal, the Hindola Mahal, the Taveli Mahal, and the Nahar Jharokha. It is said that both Baz Bahadur and Queen Roopmati were great music lovers which bonded them together.

One can enter the mausoleum from the entrance gate, (which is built on a square plan with a marble dome) in the middle of the northern wall. We visited Roopmati Mahal in Mandu during the last week of September in 2025. While the fort is old and there is nothing much to see there but the views of Vindhya ranges and nearby areas are mesmerizing. It was green all around with scenic beauty. We really enjoyed the fort. 30-45 minutes are good enough for the fort visit. Need to walk 300-400 mtr on an altitude but worth visiting.

Stepped wells are called Baodies. Both were sources of water for domestic and irrigation use.
Unlike wells, the baodies were very elaborate constructions. In baodies rooms with pillared corridors were constructed along the steps going down to the water level.
Some big and famous baodies had three to four floors of such rooms till the water level. After the monsoon rains, some of these floors even used to be submerged!
In many cases, the baodies were a thing of beauty and became World Heritage sites, places of major tourist attractions. Here the pillars, walls and the rooms were elaborately engraved and carved beautiful statues. These rooms being below ground and in the proximity of the water were always much cooler as compared to the surface temperatures.
Baodies were constructed by the rich and the royalties. They used to retire to these subterranean rooms to enjoy the cool environments of these rooms in the baodi during summer to escape the scorching heat of Indian summer.
It is said that the water of this baodi smelt like a Champa flower and therefore this baodi was named Champa Baodi.
Champa Baodi in Mandu was built for exactly the same purpose. From its location close to Jahaz Mahal and hammams, it is safe to assume that waters from the baodi were used to supply Jahaz Mahal as well as to Hammams.
At ground level the baodi is circular but at the lower level, eight rooms are located on each side of an octagon. Stairs leading down to the rooms have been closed by authorities. It would have been exciting to go below and wander around these rooms.
Extensive ruins of pillared arched corridors and rooms all around Champa Baodi suggest that Champa baodi was not only a source of water but also a social meeting point in all seasons especially in summers when the baodi rooms were used by the ladies of the harem to escape the scorching summer heat of Malwa region.

A part of the Royal Group of Monuments, it is an extensively constructed stepwell that was very much inspired by the styles of the Turkish bath. This place was named Champa Baoli because the aroma of the waters was believed to resemble that of the Champa flower. The place is a must-visit for all tourists roaming in Mandu.
It is an epitome of Mughal architecture. The vaulted rooms or Taikhanas were well connected to keep the bath remained cool during extreme high temperatures. The structures of the chambers in the cellars built inside this stepwell are like a maze. Lower ground levels have very narrow passages to go to. One of them is connected to the Munj Pond through a corridor leading to the pavilion on the western side. The walls inside this basement are arched. In the middle of these walls are the stairs leading to the lower floor of the stepwell. Proper management of air and light was also done at the time of construction of Champa Baoli.
One can marvel at the engineers of that time and their skills. This stepwell was built not only for water management but also to avoid enemy attacks at that time. It is one of the coolest place in mandav because of its air coolent technology. It is having approx 54 rooms inside the earth. This rooms are made for the Queens. You can only reach upto 2 floors in champa baoli. And 3 floor is closed. I will highly recommend you to have guide because it will tell you about the quality of that place for eg sona bath, water heating, water harvesting, air cooler etc.It's an historic well used for drinking water and also to keep the various surrounding palaces cool in summer. It's connected to a very sophisticated plumbing and cooling system.

On a clear day you can view Narmada river from this place. The palace is not exactly in a good shape and only the outer walls of the palace are standing today while much of it is in ruins. Its located at approx distance of 5-6 kms from Mandu city which is accessible by roads which are in good condition, parking is available at the base of palace and is free of cost. Do note that to reach the palace you have to walk down from parking area which is a steep road and can take 15-20min, can be bit challenging for senior citizens and differently abled. Overall a good place to enjoy the views of the Nimar Valley and experience the architectural marvels of Mandu👍🏻

It is a nice point but unfortunately it's all broken. The road which leads to this point is badly polluted with garbage. There is nothing much to see and can be skipped. You will get a top view of lohani caves from here. You will also get a view of mountains and valleys from here.

This almost demolished place still carries so many minute details that depict the richness of the royalties of Mandu. There is a bathroom that is still intact, called the hamam. The carvings on the roof and how the sunlight passes through this and makes the place shine was beautiful to watch. Jal Mahal also known as "The Water Palace" was built by Bahadurshah Gujarati in 1534 A.D. Sultan Jahangir stayed here for 6 months during his visit to Mandu. It is situated around Munj Talao and to the south of Shahi Mahal.
It encompasses a fountain, elegant arches and marvelous cuttings done on stones which is a good evidence of high end art. It is built using Roman, Afghani and Mughal arts.
