This was a really cool beach and unlike any beach I have been to before. The rocks, though smooth, were difficult for my sissy feet to walk on but we managed and the swimming was great. The water was cold and so refreshing. The cedar forest that lines the beach was just as impressive as the beach itself. There were so many areas for a picnic and plenty of space to spread out. This is such a unique a beautiful part of Wisconsin. Well worth the journey.

This is my favorite spot to hang out on the island when I'm in the mood to bring some food and refreshments and chow down while enjoying a lovely, scenic view of the beach and lake. I will typically head over to one of the bars or restaurants, order something for takeout, and then head over to Percy Johnson to eat my meal. During the warmer months, be forewarned: there will be a variety of bugs, especially the ones capable of flight, so come prepared and bring your lotions and sprays because some of these winged insects will try to fly up and into your nostrils and eyes, for whatever reason. Or maybe it's just me, so who knows.
I would not consider this a "swimming" sort of beach, but you are absolutely welcome to try. The water just always seems uncomfortably cold during the warmer months, and the sediment and detritus floating or settling in the lake can really make the water murky and sometimes foul-smelling. It really is more of a "picnic with a view" type of beach. It is perfect for a nice exploratory stroll up and down the beach to inspect and scrutinize the local plants and wildlife and frolic in the sand.
To me, personally, this beach gains its most spectacular visual appearance in the late fall when the water gets tremendously choppy due to high winds and the trees slowly become bereft of its red, yellow, and orange leaves gently gliding through the chill air to land softly, quietly, and largely unnoticed on the surf and sod. With a Thermos filled with steaming hot black coffee in hand and with your warmest flannel over your back and shoulders and buttoned up tight is the best way to enjoy the view of the tumultuous water. Not super well maintained, but accessible with a heck of a view and room for a pleasant walk. Was pleasantly surprised by the rocky outcrop to the right of the main beach area, nothing crazy to write home about, but an easy lunch spot if the weather is amiable.

Go here instead of Schoolhouse Beach, it’s way more scenic, fun to be at, & just overall better. Sand Dunes Park fan til I die. I mean I only went once & will never go again but this literally felt like I was at an ocean whereas Schoolhouse was crowded & honestly a bore. If you have kids or a dog it’s a great place for them to run & play too, Schoolhouse Beach however, is not. Guys I cannot stress enough how underrated this beach is compared to that one.

Another amazing beach and very different from schoolhouse beach. The beach is super soft sand and postcard perfect views. I was surprised that when you approach the water it changes to rocks, very difficult to walk on rocks. More hurty than schoolhouse beach. After walking out for what felt like a long time it was still only shin deep. Kept going and still only shin deep. Then my daughter pointed out people way out and they were only at knee depth. Abort missionn, no way I could have made it to swimmable waters so we stuck to the sandy beach instead. 🤣 So not great for swimming (for me anyway) but great for hanging out and enjoying the views and company.

I like to call this beach the "exercise beach" due to the somewhat steep sand hill one needs to conquer before arriving at the beach and water. Sand Dunes Park is a beautiful beach with a lovely scenic view. It is a fantastic place to bring your family and friends for an exploratory visit and to frolic in the sand and water. It is also a great spot to view the local plantlife and wildlife, particularly of the avian variety. The best time to go is during the summer months, as the water will be more temperate and conducive for swimming and splashing. But just be forewarned as to the volume of insects that will also be sharing the same space as you, so bring your lotions and sprays. I took the Karfi ferry to Rock Island expecting a breezy, scenic ride across the water. What I didn’t expect was to be greeted by a crew member who seemed personally offended that passengers existed. The scenery was charming, the weather was kind, but the welcome was about as warm as Lake Michigan in January. Efficiency? Sure. Friendliness? Only if you count glaring as a form of customer service. I recently visited Jacobsens Museum at 2150 Little Lake Rd, in Washington, WI. It's a wonderful museum that describes the history of the area. There are many interesting antiques that are unique to this part of the state. The docent working that day was very helpful as we discussed many of the items displayed. Schoolhouse Beach is absolutely stunning — the smooth white limestone rocks against the crystal-clear turquoise water make it one of the most unique beaches I’ve ever seen. It’s peaceful, picturesque, and definitely worth a visit if you’re on Washington Island.
That said, the abundance of signs warning visitors not to take any of the rocks gave the place a bit of an uninviting feel. I completely understand the need to preserve the beach, but the tone of the signage made it feel more like you were an intruder than a guest. Unfortunately, my experience fell short of expectations.
Upon arrival, I noticed the cabin was not adequately cleaned. There was dust everywhere, the floor was extremely dirty and we found lots of cobwebs in the corners.
Also the smell it was so disgusting (like a pee). No hot water for the shower.
We had a really bad experience!
We stayed in the same area and if I’m not mistaken we rent the same cabin 3 years ago and the cabins had so much better quality and conditions than now.
That’s very unfortunate because we used to love the place.
I hope the host can address the issues for future guests.

As a mom of 3 boys who recently moved to the Midwest, I was really hoping that being on an island would give them the chance to see the kind of wildlife we didn’t get to experience in a big city. Washington Island Campground did not disappoint. The kids found slugs in the trees and newts in the pond. Nature at its finest! That’s part of what camping in the woods is all about. It turned into such a cool and unexpected learning experience for them. The campground itself is incredibly clean and well cared for. What I really loved was that the owners kept as much of the natural woods intact possible. It felt wild in the best way, as if we were truly guests in nature’s home, and everything the owners could care for was done with such intention and respect, without disturbing the peaceful, untouched beauty of the woods. The sites were private, quiet, and surrounded by nature. The lodge had everything we needed, from helpful info to little extras, and the bathrooms were absolutely beautiful; clean, modern, and clearly well cared for. The owners are just the kindest people and you can tell they put a lot of love into the place. We were so impressed and are already talking about coming back. Highly recommend!

Camped for 4 nights tent camping so cannot comment on RV setups. Best tent sites are 19 or 20. Some sites are right on top of each other, but their website has a 360 photo of each site to help you choose. Firewood was $7 per bundle, and kind of green, had a hard time burning, and contained 4-5 large pieces so would recommend to have a hatchet or Axe to split up. The swimming pond is a nice bonus to cool off, and is clean. Staff was accommodating, and we were able to extended our stay by an extra night via text message when they were out of the office.

Hospitality is at an 11! When my heater in the cabin went out late night, one of the owners brought over her personal heater for me to make sure I had what I needed.

Our experience at Washington Island Campground was very disappointing. First, I asked for a camp space for our RV as close to the deluxe cabin (57) we rented for our daughter’s family. I was told that 49 was a spacious grassy spot across from the cabin. Yes it was spacious but definitely not grassy as you can see in the pictures. It was muddy. The power and water were also so far back that not parking in the mud wasn’t an option. Secondly, the website is filled with false advertising. There are no inflatables in the pond, which is filled with newts and leeches so no swimming. The mini golf course is dangerous and dilapidated. My grandson fell over the metal nails sticking up and was bleeding but we couldn’t tell anyone because the office was closed, which it often was. The play set on the website is not what is on site either. Yes they offer laundry but it is 7$ for one load. And the overflowing trash dumpster was disgusting and frustrating. I could go on and on but we opted to leave a day early to avoid any more disappointment. Unfortunately I couldn’t talk to anyone because the office was closed again…still.

Here’s the truth: if you want to DO things, don’t come here. If you want to eat at restaurants, have the convenience of a gas station or shops, do activities that you have to pay for, this is NOT the place for you. If you want to come and spend time with nature and the lake, use your own equipment for kayaking, biking, paddle boarding, etc., and make your own meals at the campgrounds or on a grill, then this IS the place for you. If you want all that other stuff, stay in Sister Bay or Egg Harbor. I will say that the Albatross is the best burger you’ll have anywhere, but again, if you want speed of service, stay in Chicago or on the mainland.
This is one of my favorite places. If you give it one star, we don’t want you back anyway! ;)

The quiet slow pace of the island is just what we needed to disconnect from the crazy world and enjoy each other and the world around us. So many breathtaking spots to visit. The beauty of this island calms the soul and opens the mind.
Places to check out include School house beach made entirely of smooth stones, the old Stavkirke church, Lavender fields in the peek season of mid-July to August, and don't forget to stop by The Albatross(only openduring the warm months) for some tasty lunch! I promise lunch will be well worth the wait!
If your on the fence about visiting the island I would 1000% say do it! One of my favorite places in the world to visit!

Feels kinda funny to rate an island, but we've been coming here for 30+ years because of my folks. The quiet atmosphere, locals, the sunsets, the beaches, the bars and restaurants and local entertainment, nature trails, mountain hikes, art, fishing, sail boating, water skiing, exploration, bonfires, cool nights, stargazing, the pleasant isolation, the state parks, camping, hunting, tiny businesses, big northern European exploration history, biking, running, art fairs, community spirit, singular ecology, massive tourist trade...you name it, this island has it. Hotels are available, as are houses for rent on the coastline, The town has everything you could need from groceries to liquor to a library to cheeseburgers to gourmet coffee. Come for a week, unwind, reset. You are "north of the tension line" as the locals say. Come at the end of the spring or the beginning of the fall, tends to be less crowded with tourists and still convenient enough to get everything you need for a vacation. Water is cold and clear, folks are friendly and relaxation is encouraged. The way I'm going, I will probably be buried on this island.

I love this island. I've gone here for vacation more than any other place. This is a good place to unplug. If you go during the week it's not uncommon to find a sandy beach all to yourself if you know where to look. I like the people here. It's kind of rare to find this small town, everyone knows everyone else kind of community anywhere else. But with about 600 people on an island you get that. It's a simpler life there. I actually enjoy the lack of choice. One place to get groceries. One place to go for ice cream. One coffee shop. Everything owned and operated by a local family.

I recently visited the Jackson Harbor Maritime Museum on Washington Island, WI. It's a small museum but has a very good history of fishing on the Island. I was lucky to get a guided tour which gave me more information. I was shown the engines of the fishing boats, info on the nets used. They had a nice display of outboard motors. This is in an area on the very northwest corner of Washington Island. Not too many people get up this far.
Finding this place was not helped by Yelp's erroneous location. At first we ended up on Allouez Trail. Gets you close but ends in private property.
Google Earth took us to Little Lake Road (duh!), which is quite south of where you think the right road should be. This road takes you to the Jacobsen Museum (worthy of a visit, if you can catch it open) with this pretty little lake just to the east of the museum. There was once a large Native American encampment here. Most of the northern part of the lake is in preserve
And it is a pretty lake...a lake on an island in a lake. A few artifacts are scattered about..an old rock wagon and a salvaged rudder among them.
You can lauch a canoe or kayak here. The preserve around the lake is 32 scres with an easy 1.25 mile hiking trail. Birding is great!
We had permission from the owner of the Hotel Washington to access her property and we walked to the cliffside of Green Bay.
All in all a pretty place to visit. I'm sure there's a ton of fish there, too.
If you're on Washington Island and looking for a lesser known place it would behoove you to drive or bike here.
Two asides...the bird you hear singing in the woods is likely a red eyed vireo, they are everywhere on the island. You will see an unfamiliar flag around the island. It is the flag of Iceland, many of the early folks who settled on Washington Island came from or had ancestry from Iceland. The tradition continues.

It's my favorite spot to head over to on Washington Island for a little reflection, meditation, and general peace and quiet. It is a beautiful location with a quaint dock set on a quaint little lake. Wonderful area to explore and enjoy the local plants and wildlife. It's such a gorgeous gem tucked away up on the island that it is as though it came right out of a Thomas Kinkade painting.
