My husband and I had our anniversary dinner here and it was such a wonderful experience I can’t stop thinking about it. Bacon beef wrapped dates were divine and I can’t get over the sweet port we had for dessert. Other hits were the hanger steak, beet salad, and the crispy goat hummus. I seriously believe it's one of the most under rated restaurant on Portland. I feel like their food is fantastic, not just in taste, but also the plating, the way they play with colors and textures and try and achieve the perfection in their cook and finish. I have been these a few times and am reviewing them today as the last few time I inhaled the food too fast to take pictures. My recommendations the hamachi, lambchops, asparagus and the olive chocolate cake.
The hamachi crudo is just a work of art, the lamb is always so succulent and the asparagus is grill work at its best. The olive chocolate cake on the other hand is more of an acquired taste, which you will acquire very quickly and devour it down before you even realize.
Overall they are exceptional, but service can feel a little bit of a let down at times, and there can be big gaps between their courses based on how busy they are, probably why they are a little underrated.
Also it's loud in there, be heard to speak a little louder and put in the work ☺️

Great, innovative Mediterranean cuisine! We loved everything: smoked eggplant spread with pita, beet salad with sheep cheese and herbs served over tahini, gigante beans with toats and harissa butter, and Moroccan brick chicken with arugula, pickled shallots and capers.
The citizen was succulent and tnder and seasoned to enhance the flavor of the meat rather than burying it, my wife does not like arugula but loved the salad. Everything was a delight and digested well. The desserts:.tahinii ice cream had a wonderful toasty flavor and like a mild peanut butter-like quality. The olive oil chocolate cake was flavorful and light and served with a blueberry compote and zabaglioni ice cream.
We will be returning to try more of the many items on the menu.

Hubs and I were in Portland for a trade tasting for his work and since I was celebrating my BD - we looked for something close to the Castaway. The Mediterranean looked very interesting - we are adventurous foodies and the menu rang our chimes! And - yowza! It checked all the boxes for us - great music on the PA, friendly faces from the get-go, fast service (we were the very first in for a while),yummo beer on draft (my favorite pFriem and Great Notation Hazy for hubs - great $$ on those). OMG - the Crispy Lamb Hummus was rich - the lamb perfectly crispy as promised, the beef bacon wrapped dates were sweet and scrumptious, Greek Potatoes delightfully herbed and buttery in a huge portion, the Mejadara with Crispy Onions were a mouthful of savory flavors - AND - the VERY BEST I saved for the last! Don't you dare pass up the GRILLED OCTOPUS - nicely presented, a bit chewy as Octo can be, but so fresh and briny!! Then - we made absolute oink-oinks of ourselves (it was my BD) and ordered the Tahini ice cream in a chocolate shell. Nick and John were right on the money with service - but friendly - you can tell when servers like their jobs :). All in all - wonderful day in Portland for the Birthday Girl. Then we waddled on home back to Salem! P.S. Sorry about the photo of the missing Octo parts - we couldn't wait!

The atmosphere is family friendly. Parking lot in front with many spaces. Indoor seating (two levels) and outdoor seating. Very good Mediterranean food. Large loaves of pita provided right out of the oven! Be careful, it's hot! Great service. Good place for conversation and children. But the service was very weird

We tried the Arabian mezza plate, chicken shawarma, and the lamb kabob.
The mezza plate was okay. The hummus tasted day old and not fresh. The zataar bread was good. The falafel was good.
The chicken shawarma was okay. Rice was okay but kind of mushy. The salad was limp and tasted expired.
The lamb was not good. My partner is a lamb eater and said it was very chewy, gamey, and something tasted “off”. It was very hard to cut through. I tried it as well and agreed.
The Beruit Spring cocktail and wine were great.
Overall, the food was mid, not fresh, and lacking spices. As a Mediterranean woman, I was very excited to try this food but left unsatisfied. I think it probably was better 10-15 years ago.

This location is brighter and more open than the one on Broadway and the food is just as good. We had excellent service and though there may have been a wait here and there, we found it gave plenty of time for conversation and to digest a little bit. Absolutely delicious food! We had the chicken kabob platter, shawarma, spanakopita, and peanut butter chocolate baklava.
You get served homemade bread similar to pita bread that pretty much melts in your mouth and is delicious.
The spanakopita is the best we’ve ever had and we’ve had it in Greece. The flavor is just unreal in that dish. Chicken kabobs were great and then the PB chocolate baklava…amazing! We were visiting from out of state and so happy we found this place. It was so good we got extra food to go to eat the next day at our airbnb.

I’m surprised that this place isn’t WAY busier! The food was absolutely amazing — I got the vegetarian mezza plate, which has many little dips and things to nibble on. I especially loved the small ‘rice wrapped in grape leaves’ that was included on my plate. I brought home a sandwich order from here for my sister and she said it was beyond amazing. We visited for dinner yesterday and got the Moroccan chicken, and the Kafta stew with seasoned rice. First they brought out freshly made pita bread, hot on a plate, which was very nice.
Based on reviews and photos of the food we looked at before coming in, we had high hopes for the food, and still the entrees managed to far exceed our expectations.
The flavors and textures are so beautifully done. Even the colors, as can be seen in the photo.
This place is family owned and run and you can taste that they have been sharing recipes and techniques for generations at this point, because it is all just so wonderful and delicious. Nothing is anything close to bland, but you also don't taste salt - just genuine flavor, in everything they make.
It's true comfort food, done so well it's as if your own loving grandparents made it for you.
The service is warm and thoughtful, and very nicely done. They also offer a number of lovely desserts made in house which should definitely be tasted if you have the chance after what will almost certainly be a satisfying and filling meal.
We quickly decided to add this place into our regular rotation of places to eat, and we're already looking forward to going here again.

Moroccan cuisine being my most favorite, so my expectation with the food and ambience was really high. I would say the food is phenomenal, tajine was the recommendation so went with it. The meat was so tender and the flavor was great. The ambience really cool, gives the touch of Moroccan restaurants and the souvenirs around the restaurant are pretty cool to watch. I loved the over all experience. Excellent and quick service. It hardly took them few minutes to get my order on the table. Definitely recommending this place

So I grew up in Brooklyn New York and I was surrounded by tons of middle eastern food. I definitely know what to look for. This place is beyond amazing. family owned. Mom cooks all the food and their children help.
I got the mix plate and it was ridiculously delicious. The rice tasted like my mom made it. The chicken shawarma was so good. The beef kebab was amazing as well and I’m sure the lamb is good but I don’t like lamb so I got double chicken. Wow was it amazing! The house bread is insane as well. I’ll be back.

I usually visit 4 star review restaurants and up. Today I visited Tangier in Portland, OR since it had a 4.5 start review. I waited about 10 minutes to order my drink and food. I usually don’t rate the service, but the food instead. The waitress was not friendly at all. She took long to refill my drink and never came by to ask if anything needed. The food was a 7/10. The lamb and chicken in messa combo were burned. Definitely not a great experience!

Authentic Lebanese food. The chicken, lamb, and pita bread were fantastic. Having spent many years in the Middle East it’s hard to find a restaurant which makes dishes perfectly. The service was nice and the atmosphere was just like being in Lebanon. Some people may say this is a rougher part of the Portland city but I felt safe coming and going. Would recommend and will be back.

The food was high quality flavorful Lebanese food and was also very nourishing and healthy for restaurant food. The service was great the owner was very attentive and I saw him give one of his regular customers dessert to go on him. The restaurant itself isn’t new and renovated but they kept an extremely cozy and intimate vibe with white table cloths and flowers on every table and nice warm lighting. From the perfect wine recommendation to compliment our meal, to the extra care taken in helping us order the the right combinations to try all the flavors we were pondering from the menu, we felt welcomed like regulars on our first visit. We had the vegetarian Al Amir, which was a delightful tour of Lebanese flavors, the Khudar-Wa-Riz (the cauliflower was a table favorite), and the Krydis with prawns perfectly prepared. I love stuffed grape leaves and these are some of the best I've had. The humus and lamb (bone in - always...) were outstanding.

The younger girl at the front who took our order was so kind and courteous to us and explained everything on the menu and even brought us water to a table inside to review and answer questions about. We ordered at the register and then she asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside and we went outside. Tbh I was confused at first with a tip option and ordering at the register however, once you order food they truly take of the rest. Bringing food out, drinks, checking in and wonderful conversation. She even sold us on a wonderful Rose beverage she makes that was delightful. We were a little sticker shock from the half chicken option but wow it is a lot of food and tasted so amazing we would easily pay that price again. I think the owners could learn a thing or two from her as she was doing a great job on selling us all these options and ended up making this place a favorite of ours. Only downfall we experienced was the desserts weren't sweet enough for us and the outdoor patio had the sewer smell going on. I think if the girl running the register wouldn't of been so friendly and accommodating we would have enjoyed the atmosphere as much.

We were warmly greeted and even given a free bite of baklava, but the cups were dirty, a hot chocolate came out cold and another item was forgotten. Disappointing. I am not an expert and I do not have extensive experience with Lebanese cuisine. Perhaps the few places I have been have spoiled me. I ordered the mezza platter and added a kofta kabob. I paid extra for pita, which led me to believe it would be freshly made. Unfortunately it was a sad, thin, cold grocery store grade pita bread. The hummus was passable, but bland. The falafel was gooey inside and bland. The tabouli was passable but not very tangy. I don't have much experience with stuffed grape leaves, but I found these unappetizing. The Kofta was lightly spiced, but I have had much better. The only things that were remotely flavorful, was the yogurt that came with the kofta and the roasted cauliflower. I found myself eating quickly to get the experience over with. Probably the best thing about the meal was it was forgettable.

We had such a great experience at Ya Hala – especially in the Fairuz Room. The atmosphere instantly transported us—it truly felt like we were in Beirut.
The hummus was exceptional—ultra creamy and smooth—and the falafel struck the perfect balance of crisp and tender. The grape leaves had a distinctly Lebanese flair, and the cocktails were festive, with a great nod to Lebanese flavors throughout the drinks list.
Mirna took such good care of us, especially being pescatarians, and made sure we had plenty of thoughtful options.

I’m originally from Iraq and I’ve been eating Iraqi food my whole life. I’ve been to a crazy amount of Iraqi restaurants looking to see who can authentically replicate the taste of Iraq. Darsalam is the one. No other place even comes close.
We had the Golden Pompano fish and my eyes started getting teary. It reminded me so much of back home. The Shish Kabob was juicy and well seasoned absolutely took my breath away. The Eggplant Stew (Tabsi Betenjan) was better than any other I’ve ever had even in home cooking.
We had lunch here, and we are coming back tonight as well for dinner.

Found this whole exploring the Old Town area. This was a new experience for me as I never had food with this flavor profile. It was simply amazing in every way. Kasbah is such an excellent dining experience that it feels like a trip to Morocco without leaving Portland. The interior is decorated with a traditional colorful design inspired by Moroccan roots and creates a cozy and authentic atmosphere.
The food is hearty and has simple yet very delicious flavors. Tried the Moroccan Beet salad and a 7-vegetable tagine and both were so good! They offer quite a few meat options as well. The dishes also had a generous portion size.

Came here on Thursday evening and there was no wait. It's a small cozy corner cafe serving up authentic Moroccan food. I don't know how I've missed this place the last 4 years I've been in the area.
We ordered the beet salad and chickpea vegetable tagine with couscous and the food came quickly. And wow. Both dishes were amazing.
The vegetable tagine was full of flavor, moist, and had 7 types of vegetables!!! It's like a feast platter. And the beets had a refreshing flavor and were still slightly crispy.
Portion sizes are on the large side which means incredible value and that you may end up with leftovers. Delicious leftovers.
We ended up meeting the owner and he's super chill. My only one piece of feedback is I wish the Moroccan music played a little more loudly since I love hearing music from other cultures. I heard it playing softly but heck, it sounds kind of cool.
Either way, will definitely be coming back.

As a Mediterranean food seeker and lover, I got to say this place was a solid 5/5!
Turkish baked hummus: creative and unique dish. Flavor was so cozy with the addition of butter and za'atar. Definitely my favorite dish of the meal. I loved this dish dipped with cucumbers as opposed to pita bread, because of the crunchy texture and the refreshing component.
Fried eggplant spears: this dish had the least "wow" factor for me. The spread itself tasted amazing with a spicy kick, and the fried eggplant tasted great by itself, although could be a bit more crispy. However, I didn't love the combination of the two, as the spread was a bit overpowering.
Lamb carnitas: meat was cooked ranging from tender to crispy. Flavor profile was subtle yet vibrant, and complemented very well with the meat.
Service and atmosphere were wonderful. Will definitely recommend!

I love Mediterranean food, and we have plenty of it in Sydney. But this was a let down, given the high reviews. The food was okay? The beet dip could’ve been smoother, the baked hummus was an interesting alternative to traditional but a little on the dry side, the cabbage was alright when topped with beets or lemon, but on its own a little heavy on the charcoal. The lamb was a little bit of a miss, with some of it quite dry and some quite good. The kofta was soooooo peppery - but after asking the staff is intended to be.

Service was pleasant. The meat was chewy, my least favorite part of the meal. The toppings were great.
What bothered my is a homless person walked in he tried to talk to me, I ignored him. He then approached the guy behind the whom gave him a free meal. That's the problem with the homeless they get away with it. This homeless guy was perfectly capable of working, but he chooses to beg for a meal and gets away with it. Went here for lunch. I ordered the lamb and beef shawarma and a side of tabouli. I was going to order their fountain drink as they had stubborn sodas, a favorite of mine, but they were out of order, so a little bit of a bummer there.
The standout was their customer service. When I ordered, it was right as they put a new batch of shawarma on the grill, so I had to wait for that to finish cooking before I could get my pita. They pre made my pita with all of the toppings while waiting, but the pita bread hardened up and wasn't fresh in the four or five minutes I had to wait. Instead of just serving the old bread to me like many places might, they threw it away and made a fresh one for me. This is pretty impressive service and commitment to good food.
The interior is a little small but mostly clean. Not too bad of a place to sit down and eat.
Overall, good place to eat and I would come back.

This place is absolutely incredible!! We're picky when it comes to middle eastern food and every other place we've tried in Portland has been over priced, underwhelming, and bland. Not the case here! The gyro was absolutely perfect! The hot sauce was spicy while remaining flavorful, the tzatziki was refreshing, the meat was perfectly cooked, veggies fresh, and the pita was delicious.

Came here late one night in Portland. Blown away by the service — we were promptly seated, given a full overview of the menu, and ever personal recommendations from the chef himself. He made it very clear that we ought to explore the Egyptian-Iraqi cuisine his family was sharing with Portland, so he insisted we get Moussaka, a lamb plate, and kabob plate.
We were served in no less than 15 minutes and were blown away by the freshness and attention to detail. The lamb was fall off the bone tender, the Moussaka paired incredibly well with the fresh bread, and the Iraqi tea reminded me of many fond times in CA. 100% recommend if you’re in Portland.

This is a wonderful place to eat halal food; by far the best place I’ve tried yet in USA. We had lamb and chicken gyro and both were fantastic. The food is fresh and delicious, and the portions are generous. Great food, friendly owner and staff, and hygiene is held to the highest standards. My wife is allergic to sesame (which is a key ingredient in hummus and tahini), so I told the staff about that and they all stood there making sure we get our order allergen-free. Very nice people from the owner to the chef, to the young American guy working with them. I hope them all the best.

Ali is not only super kind but he makes the freshest Mediterranean food I've ever had. He was friendly and patient with me when I ordered and didn't mind my special request. Super friendly and again the lamb gyro 🥙 was the best I've ever had! So happy he is just down the street from me! This will be "my spot" to take anyone who's visiting me!

We come here once in a while cause we live close by and have had such a wonderful experience every time. The guy who makes the food is super nice and always puts so much care into making the food perfect. Meat always cooked perfectly, hummus is silly smooth, rice is so flavorful, everything is fresh and delicious and decently priced. Hope it stays in the area a long time!

Was here a few weeks ago and had the BEST meal. I chatted a little with the owner, I believe his name is Ali. The owner Ali does everything and runs the entire business.
As he was cooking, I was looking at his kitchen/cooking setup. The place is kept extremely organized and clean. He had very clean preparation, used gloves, things were kept in the refrigerator until need, all the produce was fresh. The tomatoes were ripe and the lettuce was green and crisp.
A lot of middle eastern places I go to have the rice as an afterthought where the rice may be dry or overcooked, but Awafi's rice was soft and fluffy and perfect. The Tzatziki was creamy and garlicky and full of flavor.
We ordered a lamb plate and a chicken plate. The lamb was spiced well and delicious, but the real standout was the chicken. Some crispy and soft bits and it went so well with the rice and veggies.
Ali gave us a baklava when he heard I was from Hawaii and went out of my way to try them out. The baklava was so good! Soft delicate crispy layers and an intense and sweet center. It all was held together with the gooey sticky sweet topping.
You can tell the effort that is put into this business with how good the ingredients and food is. I wish Awafi's was close to where I lived, I'd be going there at least once a week haha.
