The cheese making demonstration followed by tasting was an absolute highlight. Nice to see they had put out some Wensleydale and fruit cake samples to try. The two together just work so well. Regrettably there was no actual cheese production to watch from the viewing gallery during my visit, but I can hardly fault them on account of their production schedule. The cheese shop is also a must visit, more so than the equally well stocked gift shop in my opinion. Well laid out and with samples of each flavour available to try before you buy. I did a lot of trying, and then of course a little buying. Be prepared for the cold in here though, presumably to help keep the cheese fresh.

The Wensleydale creamery experience you need to buy tickets for online. In Calverts restaurant, we were lucky to get a table, many people turned away and had to book. For 2 meal,a side & 2 drinks cost £36. The meal was delicious 😋. I will post pictures. The demonstration how to make Wensleydale cheese was very informative (And we used a 2 for 1 offer), full of information on the surrounding area and the instructor/demonstrator was a very likable gent. The staff did forget our drinks order so the wife had to go and reminded them, but apart from that the service was OK. As you wend your way up the road towards the castle you get glimpses of this impressive monument to medieval building through the trees. Suddenly, you find yourself at the foot of this huge stronghold's walls and driving right in front of it and into the carpark (carparking is not included in the entrance fee, so don't forget to pay at the machine!) Atmospheric, incredibly well maintained and curated medieval space. We didn't find many choices for gf people, if any really though, which could easily be sorted with a bit more thought as the other produce was really good quality overall, so their bakers are protalented enough enough to adapt some recipes. A decent slice of pie with a bit of lettuce costs £5.00 and 50p extra for chutney, quiche was about the same. Sausage rolls a little cheaper. Cakes were around £3 -£4 per slice but generous portions. The falconry/archery person was really interesting and other members of staff informative and knowledgeable. The maze kept us well occupied for quite some time! The Mary Queen of Scots connection is well explored too. It was also Halloween week so the castle was suitably themed and decorated accordingly which was good fun, with dressing up opportunities, pumpkin trail and lots of ghoulies and ghosties hidden around the space. We absolutely loved it here and had a super experience overall. It's easy to see why this place regularly receives visitor attraction awards! Plenty of well maintained toilet facilities too including in the car park. It was also very good for physical fitness and working off the tea room calories! There are lots of steep steps, winding staircases, and opportunities to walk around everywhere. When I got home I was amazed to find I'd easily completed more than 12,000 steps exploring this ancient and beautiful place! Highly recommended 👍💟

(원문) Went here with my son for a day out on the weekend. Parking is great, loads of spaces and had no trouble getting a spot. The inside of the building is a big mix of gift shop, cafe and check-in for the cave so it wasnt clear where we should have been going to get booked in. Once we found the check-in we purchased our ticket and the women who served us was incredibly nice and made us feel welcomed and excited to go down below. The cave it’s self it very tight but that is to be expected, there are a had full of seats while your down there if you need to sit down. Side note - don’t wear pants or shoes you don’t want to get dirty, the ground water has lime stone sediment in it so it will leave white marks on your shoes. The gift shop sells an incredible assortment of stones and crystals, it does say they are from the cave and suspect they aren’t. They don’t sell you standard gift shop items such as pens, pins and patches which is a shame because they are what most people collect as a reminder, I was looking to buy all 3 but ended up leaving with no souvenirs. Overall it was a pleasent experience, mainly due to the quality of the cave and the customer service of the staff. The contents of the shop could do with expanding as if you don’t like stones to buy them you don’t have anything to buy essentially.

The geode cracking was probably the stand out part of the day. All the staff were super friendly even in the reception area which was a bit chaotic but they were happy to help and point you in the right direction, the fossil dig was brilliant as well and then of course the caves themselves where brilliant and my daughter loved looking for the answers to the fairy door quiz. Rated 4 star rather than 5, as although we really enjoyed it and would return, I’ve marginally marked it down for what feels like very expensive food (eg £9.50 for a sandwich), even in economically difficult times. The staff were also a little cold if I’m being honest. All the right things were being said; at best it was service without genuine warmth or ar worst pretty curt, depending on the member of staff.
