The food was as excellent as it always had been. One of our party was vegetarian and instead of being an after thought on the menu she was told everything came as a vegetarian option. (원문) Sorrento Upminster This was surprisingly our first visit to Sorrento which is a long and well established Italian restaurant in Upminster , Essex. The reviews that we’d seen have been mostly good so we thought it was about time to see for ourselves. We decided to go for an early evening dinner on saturday and due to being fully booked were given a time for the table to be returned which for us was fine. We arrived and was given a friendly welcome before being asked where we’d like to be seated. We chose a table next to the bar which gave us a great view of the restaurant. The rustic feel of the restaurant does remind you of the old days but the nice thing is that you do think you are in a little village in Italy. The staff were very friendly and just like the Italian way are constantly chatting to each other. We started with a drink while we looked at the extensive menu as well as a great selection of dishes on the specials board. Starters - We decided to start with the Grilled Sardines from the specials board and the Polpettine Napoli which were meatballs in a tomato sauce with toasted ciabatta. When the dishes arrived the presentation was very basic but the most important thing was that the food was delicious. Mains - Now on to the main course where my wife chose the Sea Bass all’ Aglio which was sea bass fillets with butter , garlic and tomato. For myself I opted for the Veal T.Bone with butter and sage of the specials board. We also ordered a side of Zucchini Fritte. Now here is where we were a mixture of highs and lows. Let’s start with the highs. The Sea Bass was delicious and my Veal T.Bone was a definite 10/10. Unfortunately the lows were the bland selection of vegetables (cabbage , carrots and broccoli) that seem to come with every meat or fish dish. It really was a shame. Desserts - After a nice little break it was time for desserts and we chose two from the specials. They were the Lemon Delizia a lemon sponge cake filled with a lemon custard and the Pasteria an orange flavoured neopolitan tart. Both desserts were a delight and a nice way to finish. We finished with a coffee to bring to and end a delightful visit to Sorrento. The food was very good and yes does take you back in time a bit. The staff were excellent and their friendliness is hard to beat. So yes if you don’t want modern but want to enjoy good food in a nice friendly atmosphere then yes I would recommend a visit. As I said the only little downside was the vegetables served with the main courses. The average price for 3 Courses is £45 so good value for money. I've had work do's here; I came with family, introduced new friends, and probably single handedly introduced this restaurant to about 25+ people. Well, that will be no longer. I have explained this to all those I have once recommended this to, and now the principal will stay amongst them all. I went on a wednesday evening approx 6.30pm there was 1 other couple in there at the time. This restaurant is not a busy restaurant and often I have gone to Yin Court to find we are the only customers in there for hours! The younger lady (not the regular owner) served us, we had a little one with us (4 years old) who took (no exaggeration) 3 chips and 2 prawn crackers from my plate.. the lady who served us saw this directly looking at us when he took it from my plate.. They have a "dont waste food policy" which I think is fantastic.. therefore if i had left 2 prawn crackers on the side & they took it away it would of been thrown, however the little one decided to eat 1.. no big deal. It came to paying the bill as to which she charged us 2 adult buffet and 1 kids buffet; I questioned it and said, he only took a few chips and crackers, does he really need to pay? I'll pay for his drink (obviously) and she said "he had food on plate he pay" I politely requested if she can re consider as the money isn't a problem, but the principle is.. £12.00 for a few chips and crackers.. she did not budge.. the couple opposite laughed and agreed it was ridiculous.. I paid because it was late and I could not be bothered to argue over £12.00.. However... I attended Tuesday just gone (6pm) so another non peak period for them, the regular was there this time.. me and the Mrs decided we wanted Chinese and we also (obviously) had the little one.. he won't just sit there and watch us eat.. so I mentioned PRIOR to eating, is it okay if he nicks a few chips and crackers to keep him quiet, she replied with "no; if he eats he has to pay" I looked at her and said seriously? I've been coming here approx 1/2 times a month for the past 5-6 years and he cant have a few chips? He has already has his dinner its just to keep him quiet.. she said no.. she put the crackers on the table, I then decided to not go and walk out.. as I got up the little one touched the cracker and was saying he wanted one.. she said "it's okay he can have one" I replied with no.. you can't have one.. We decided to choose the Small Nachos , Jalapeño Bullets and Spicy Tequila Prawns to begin. These were delicious so now we couldn’t wait for our mains. I decided to have the Churros for dessert and these were also very good and cam with caramel and chocolate sauces ans a scoop of vanilla ice cream. We finished with a coffee to end a fabulous lunch where the food was amazing and the service was excellent. So yes I would highly recommend a visit.
