Cafe
Fresher's Cafe, located in Ambleside, is a family-run establishment known for its delicious homemade food and friendly atmosphere. The cafe offers a variety of options including all-day breakfast, quiches, sandwiches, soups, and cakes with vegan and gluten-free choices available. In addition to premium coffees and teas, they also serve smoothies, milkshakes, ice creams, and iced coffees.
This is one of my favourite cafes. The staff are really helpful and friendly. The jacket potato I had with beans and tuna sweet corn was delicious and fulfilling and the price was reasonable. Please come and visit. The quiche is really good too!

Very nice cafe. Was a bit chilly when they had the doors open. Not much seating inside. However, service made up for this and the breakfast was beautiful. Only disappointment from a food perspective was the milkshake my friend had which ruined his meal. I however enjoyed myself greatly!
Monke M — Google review
A popular cafe to check out, keep in mind on Saturday park run is on and it took 30 mins for us to get our sandwiches for takeaway as others had already placed orders. Sunday we had no issue at all and sat down for breakfast, service was prompt this time. The staff are welcoming, the food is good, the location is convenient for any hiking.

A gem of a find foodwise. I had the Coronation Quiche. It's a vegetarian dish. I'm not a vegetarian but I really enjoyed this. It filled me just enough for the walk up to Stock Ghyll Force. The wife had jacket spud with coleslaw which she also enjoyed. Had to wait about 20 minutes for food, it was busy.

The service here and the quality of my breakfast were second to none. Good produce, cooked perfectly. The price was very reasonable too. I doubt you'll find better in the area. Top marks from me. 😀

Absolutely great cafe. Very welcoming, excellent service and the food was gorgeous. We had freshly baked quiche Lorraine and it was fantastic. Thank you guys, and so glad we stopped as we were finishing our walk. Would highly recommend that you stop at Freshers Cafe!

The Giggling Goose Cafe is a charming family-friendly spot located in North Rd, Ambleside LA22 9DT, UK. Situated by the Old Water Mill and overlooking the river, it offers a delightful setting for visitors to enjoy freshly prepared food and drinks. The cafe's menu features a variety of options including sandwiches, salads, pastries, as well as hot and cold beverages like coffee and tea.
The cake was great and the staff are happy and pleasant. The cafe is located centrally within Ambleside. There are steps to all entrances, however if you head in from the top of the hill there are only 2 steps as opposed to 2 full flights of stairs in from the high street. Very nice medium flowing stream by the outside seating.

Lovely helpful staff who showed us to a table in the large outside garden. Service was leisurely but they were busy and we were not in a hurry. Very good sandwiches with a great side salad in a little bowl and tasty coleslaw. Good value for a tourist hot spot. Felt very safe and a nice place to relax after a long walk.
Karen R — Google review
Worth a visit for cream tea when in Ambleside. It's right next to a bubbling brook, and has a water mill (it was being repaired when I visited). Service was friendly and quick, and there's a great selection of cakes. It's got a casual but cosy atmosphere, and feels like a really relaxed place. It has Destin outside for the warmer months too.
Christian P — Google review
A lovely little café, there were plenty of seating options (outside in the shade or not, or a quieter corner table inside or larger low table. Staff were excellent and very welcoming, would have loved to have had a cake as they looked fantastic but we were still full from our lunches earlier! They also have a dog wall of fame, absolutely wonderful (see photo!)

Really enjoyed my time in the Giggling Goose Cafe. Lovely food and very friendly staff. Fantastic location by the river makes the place even more attractive. It is a shame about very run down outdoor sitting area and overgrown, weedy garden.

I loved the location of the cafe, it was great to hear the stream of water and sip on coffee. The staff is very friendly and the food is good too. It’s a nice place with a view to stretch your legs and relax

AVOID! I have never experienced such rude staff! Walked up the path and stood outside of the café door waiting for my wife before heading in for coffee and a snack when this member of staff marched up to me and demanded rudely, "can I help you?". I answered no thanks, and that i was waiting for my wife. His reply startled me........"well you can't wait here, it's private property!". I looked around and saw there was nobody else there. I simply pointed out that they might want to alter their approach as people clearly had to pass over their "private property" in order to get to the café door. The fact the everyone else was avoiding it told me I wasn't the first to encounter such rudeness....and I can see there are other reviews stating such. TOP TIP: go to Apple Pie Café & Bakery....far, far better! Great staff, great coffee, great freshly made snacks & pies!
Andy M — Google review
Paid £6.25 for a cold "vegan sausage" sandwich, made with the kind of sausage that is just vegetable and mush. The bread disintegrated on contact. One of the worst cafés i have been to in a long time.

Located in a picturesque setting, FORCE Cafe & Terrace is a charming spot that offers breakfast, brunch, and lunch options along with an array of beverages including barista coffee from Cumbrian roasters and a variety of teas. The cafe also serves local ales, wines, and spirits. Visitors can enjoy the friendly service and ample seating while indulging in flavorful food choices at reasonable prices.
Great cafe, the food was surprisingly tasty. We did not have to wait for a table, it was busy. Polite staff and attentive, as it was busy it took a little time to attract attention. We tried several items and all were very good. Except for the kids fish fingers. Looked like Birds Eye. The view is stunning. So would visit again.
The S — Google review
I’ve recently visited The Force & Terrace near Ambleside a number of times whilst staying in the area. The cafe was very good and provided quality food in an excellent position. Its vegetarian options were superb and not just halfheartedly added to the menu. As a vegetarian I found it an excellent place to eat and its positioning and views over Windermere only further added to the experience. The staff were all friendly and accommodating. As such based on my experience I would definitely recommend The Force & Terrace as somewhere to eat especially when out walking in the Ambleside area.

We stopped here on a Saturday evening and had very rude service from one of the waitresses. Upon arrival we made a mistake and went to walk straight onto the terrace. The pizza chef explained we needed to go inside to be seated, which we apologised for and did as he said. Once in, the rude waitress told us they weren't serving anymore. We arrived at 19:48 (I checked the timestamp on my photos) and the restaurant states they shut at 21:00. We went to leave, but decided to double check if we could just have a drink on the terrace. We went back in and spoke to another waitress who was a lot friendly who said of course, and we could also have cake if we wanted. We declined the cake and just asked for drinks. Another table full of people had also just been seated on the next table to us. They all ordered food. We therefore asked the friendly waitress again if there was any chance of just 1 pizza to share, but were told this wouldn't be possible as they had run out of dough. We therefore just stayed an had a couple of drinks. Around 20:30 we noticed a marked increase in the volume of the music inside the restaurant and noticed the staff beginning to clear down and close up. The friendly waitress came over to ask if we wanted any last orders, and jokingly apologised about the music saying some of the other staff were happy it was closing time and so wanted the louder music whilst they closed up. We weren't really bothered about the music, but did think it interesting that it was more about the staff than the customers at this point, despite the restaurant still being open for another 30 minutes. We were the last people left around 20:45, so finished up our drinks, went into pay, and as we left we spotted the pizza chef taking a pizza out of the oven. So it seems they had run out of pizzas for the customers, but not the staff. This restaurant is ideally situated with stunning views. I'd recommend coming here to see that. And it's obvious from other reviews that this place is well loved and does excellent food. Just ensure you book before going, especially for a Saturday evening. And also hope that you don't get the rude waitress, she wasn't pleasant at all. We are happy we popped in for a drink and to see the views, but we wouldn't go back due to the way we were treated.

Run, don't walk to this fabulous place. It really is the perfect place to reset and have amazing food and coffees. We arrived early sunday to see smiling faces and the manager cleaning outside, was delightful. The food was well thought out and presented, this place is worth the hype. Thanks ❤️

Nice popular cafe with stunning view! Very busy place, so you need to have a great way to catch their staff's attention. I liked the selection of cakes and snacks.

If you park here, it is good for walking to the waterfalls. However, first go in the cafe and register your car (I think it is good for around 2 or so hours, but it tells you the time when you register). Cafe wise, we enjoyed our brekkie and they have outdoor seating. Decent view of the lake when stood up

An absolute treat! Our food was amazing, and all the dishes coming out from the kitchen looked and smelled really good. There is a free parking for guests and you need to register your number plates at the entrance of the cafe. Very friendly staff (always helps!). And very dog friendly cafe (indoor and outdoor), which was great for me as I could watch cute dogs while eating 😄 I have not only ticked this place off my 'to go' list but I will also be back in the future.

Excellent place for food. One of the best in ambleside. Fantastic location excellent service and beautiful food. Also has the nicest toilets I have ever seen. Had a pepperoni pizza and chunky chips and my daughter had the vegan pizza both superb. Going to come back and try the breakfast and lunch offerings another time. Highly recommended.

Nestled on the site of a former chapel and overlooking the picturesque Elterwater Common in Langdale, Lanty Slee's Elterwater offers a unique twist on the traditional Lakeland pub experience. This cozy two-room establishment features an inviting open-timber ceiling and light-wood decor, creating a warm atmosphere perfect for relaxation.
Blink and you'll miss it, so well worth seeking out. This snug little tapas/cocktail bar with a great view along the dale if the weather allows you to sit outside is top notch, and unexpected. You will probably need to book, and they're not open for food during the early part of the week, so make sure you do! The cocktails are superb - they might take a while to prep, but when they arrive you'll be blown away. The Spicy Margaritas are top drawer! Tapas is very nice too, and not over-priced. We had the sharing platters plus a tapas or two between pairs, and it was loads. Nice staff, who went the extra few yards when we asked if they could rustle up some shots .... they did, and they were great! Well done. A great venture into Lakeland indulgence.
Peter B — Google review
Something a bit different to the usual eatery, and a bit of a gem in this part of the Lakes. Very limited parking outside otherwise it's £5 to park nearby. Food very good, although some may struggle with the menu. We had a couple of small sharing plates and a large salad which was plenty for 2. Great cocktail selection if they are your thing. Staff really helpful with the allergies etc. and with recommendations on the menu. It is expensive but all Tapas bars are so you know what to expect. All in a lovely place with a relaxing atmosphere, definitely recommend it.

We have been meaning to come here for a while and finally made it last week. The food was really tasty and fresh, the cocktails expertly made by Tim were divine, but the real highlight of the evening was the amazing service from Coron. She really went out of her way to make our evening special - we will definitely return next time we are back in Elterwater!
David P — Google review
What a great hidden gem!!! My mum actually took us here as we hadn’t heard of it and she had been earlier this year and I’m so glad she did. It is such a great little gem tucked away just above Chapel Stile/Elterwater. The food was fabtastic and the staff were so friendly. We have already booked to come back again next Sunday… Definitely my favourite dishes are the Korean BBQ chicken and the Curried Cauliflower. We didn’t get to try the cocktails, but will walk there next Sunday so we can. Didn’t think it was that expensive either, dishes are decent size and we left feeling perfectly full. Can’t wait to try the rest of the menu next week…
Pub R — Google review
Amazing experience! The food was beyond delicious — you can really taste the love and effort in every plate. Chef Dixon is a true star, his dishes are creative and full of flavor. The whole team was super friendly and welcoming, always making sure we felt comfortable and well taken care of. Such a great vibe all around. Definitely one of those places you want to come back to again and again!
Álvaro O — Google review
Had a lovely evening here after a long day walking. The menu is perfect for a light bite to eat, i had Lamb Koftas and the pork belly ribs which were both delicious!. The cocktail menu was very interesting. I ordered a clover club which was absolutely amazing! Served with a fresh raspberry, orange slice and edible flowers, definitely not your average bar drink. Despite being busy, Tim behind the bar was very attentive and was clearly passionate about the drinks. Will definitely be coming back for more!:)
Eve — Google review
We had coffee, hot chocolates, apple juice and cakes while it was raining, before our hike. The atmosphere was lovely, service excellent and the people extremely friendly. We couldn’t have found a better place. The chocolate orange cake and the raspberry almond and frangipani cakes were excellent served with double jersey ice cream and chocolate and raspberry sauces, respectively. The drinks were perfect. I couldn’t recommend this place too highly
Michael G — Google review
We loved it so much we booked again immediately! Came for dinner on Thursday as a group of six and had such a lovely experience that we booked again for Saturday. The food is mouth-wateringly good and service attentive and friendly. On our first night we each picked a large sharing plate accompanied by two of their mezzo platters made up for two people respectively. That made for the perfect amount of food and we ate the lot! The chef is lovely and helps with carrying out the food. I’d highly recommend the restaurant and advise you book early! It was all very reasonable priced and cost us £36 a head including three bottles of red wine.

If you're in Ambleside, this pie maker is a must-stop. They've got a great selection of pies, and the gravy is top-notch. The only downside is that it's not the nicest place to sit, but they're open late so you can still get your pies after dark.
FANTASTIC PIES! Nothing to complain about really. Everything was good and on point. The only downside of the place is its smaller and tucked away but... its worth the trip down! Shared with my partner the 14 hours braised beef and it was an absolute Gem of a Pie. Recommended to add either the Mash or Peas too. I added the roast onion gravy as i liked my flavours soaked! Definitely a recommend!

Possibly the best Pie I have ever eaten. Superb crisp pastry, succulent slow cooked beef filling, creamy mash and proper gravy. I will definitely be visiting again...
James W — Google review
Award winning pies for a reason! We ordered the beef & ale pie and the Lancashire cheese & onion pie, both with mash and gravy - 10/10, the best pies I've ever had. Will definitely be back!
Jack W — Google review
I think this is the best pie I have ever had. We have ordered beef, chicken and saag aloo one and it was all perfect. The pie itself, the gravy, the mash and red cabbage all was perfection. Definitely will come back
Nora K — Google review
We tried the pie with braised beef and with chicken and mushrooms, both were truly delicious! And the gravy was really good too
Astrid N — Google review
The most delicious slow roasted beef EVER! Was able to make 2 visits while on hols, took daughter on return visit, she totally agreed… she had the chicken. On top of the pie success, the mash was FABULOUS and I have no words for THAT GRAVY!!!! OH MY WORD!! The staff are so lovely, couldn’t be more helpful. Our only concern was that we just couldn’t possibly leave any inc that incredible gravy! We had it served in a little jug for precise application! 🤣 Best Pie, Mash & Gravy EVER!!!!!
Janet M — Google review
This pie shop really use to hit, but today we were left really disappointed, we use to love visiting and leaving with a lovely hot pie to walk around the town, but today was asked if we were eating in or out… we answered out but were handed 2 cold pies…? When i asked about having them heated he answered we don’t do that no more but im not sure why? This seem bizarre… you offer a service to eat in & you have all the heating equipment but can’t offer to heat up the pie for customers to walk out with warm… the only added thing needed is the take away pots? Which you had to an extent for the gravy & mash? You only needed a larger one to house all 3 together & some take away cutlery? My other gripe was 2 pies just chucked into a paper bag which could have been put in a box which you have on the shelves? We’ve been here lots of times. For a pie shop that was dead at 1:30/2pm with 2 staff on, I now have to wait till tomorrow to arrive home and eat these instead.

Chesters By The River is a bright and modern cafe located in the Lake District, offering a riverside deck where visitors can enjoy homemade lunch, wood-fired pizza, and classic cakes. Despite the usual lack of conscientious food venues in tourist areas, this cafe stands out as a gem with its great food at reasonable prices.
I come here more than I care to admit. Mostly because they are a reliable place to get a great coffee and cake that are gluten and dairy free. The outdoor seating is beautiful and picturesque and the shop next door is perfect for interior inspiration or picking up gifts.
Olivia L — Google review
An absolute gem of a vegan/vegetarian coffee shop set in the heart of the stunning Lake District. It’s honestly disappointing to see negative reviews simply because they don't serve animal products — especially in a region overflowing with places that cater to meat eaters. The food here is absolutely delicious; so well crafted that if you didn’t know, you’d never guess it was entirely plant-based. A perfect spot for anyone who appreciates great food, beautiful surroundings, and a more conscious, kind way of eating. Easily 5 stars!
Gabriella M — Google review
Really lovely place. Setting is beautiful. Walked our dog along the river quickly before settling down to eat and we sat outside on the pretty veranda. Went on bank hol weekend so expected to wait a bit but got a table straight away, ordered straight away and food came out quickly! I don't know what the other negative reviews are talking about! Staff were super friendly, chatty and helpful. Food was delicious. Got a salad plate for lunch and then a take away vegan sausage roll and rocky rd for tea after a walk around Rydal water, they were also both so tasty. We are already planning to come back in a few weeks as it was so nice!
Kate — Google review
Lovely cafe by the river. Really good food and very filling. Had half a frittata and a blueberry scone. The scone was just perfect. Staff were friendly. The only downside is how busy it gets at peak lunch time in summer when during the week. Prepare to queue.
Deborah E — Google review
I love this cafe for the blackcurrant scones. They are big and fluffy with juicy blackcurrants in, served with clotted cream and juicy blackcurrant jam. I’ve been here many times and always get the blackcurrant scone with jam and cream and they are always perfect.
Julie A — Google review
I don't know why my wife loves coming here. It does have a lovely position by the river, but very limited parking and it is very busy. They serve a strange selection of food here, like some Indian food and other stuff I don't know what it is. The Indian food smells nice if that's what you want. But if you are there for a cuppa and a scone or cake, its very strong. I am not a fan of the very shabby sheik either. If it's good weather it's really nice to sit outside. The shop is much better decorated and has an excellent range of luxury goods of craft and art and home. Not my cup of tea for a place to eat, though.
Richard T — Google review
Nice cafe and good location by the river, but service could have been better. Also on a hot day, we had to sit inside due to many wasps bothering us outside. Also saw some wasps on the baked goods available to buy. Definitely put me off getting a doughnut.
Graham F — Google review
I went to Chesters years ago and have raved about the food ever since. Recently planned a trip back to Ambleside and chose to stay close to Skelwith Bridge because of Chesters. Was then rather sad to be told of some poor reviews (admittedly on Facebook), but I can confidently say it’s at least as good as it ever was. The staff are lovely; it can be busy but the staff were so genuine and kind, looking after everyone so calmly. Then the magic words when I asked “which of your cakes are vegan?” “All of them.” I could barely believe it, after most places will offer a flapjack or a beetroot cake, here you had the choice of brownies, stuffed croissants, doughnuts, fruit scones, cakes and more, then the savoury pies, and pastries. It’s amazing! And don’t worry if you’re not a herb munching emo hippy, the food tastes so good you won’t notice! The location is still as beautiful, with the river, the fells, and the covered outdoor seating. On sunny days you can spot an F-15 or Typhoon if you’re quick. It was already busy on a wet morning in March at 10, so I imagine it’s crazy when tourist season gets going. The car park is small, and turning can be tricky depending on how others park. I recommend a walk off Loughrigg early for stress free, and well earned, perfect snacks.

I was there with a good friend and we booked a night in one of the superior rooms on the top floor at Poppi Red in Hawkshead village. We were in the Grizedale suite with a huge bed, roll top bath and walk in shower, hand basin and toilet with free toiletries. The room had 8 plug sockets, an electric velux blind, wardrobe space and drawers. Coffee machine plus kettle, separate tea, coffee and complimentary biscuits. There is a bar downstairs and a pizza oven serving delicious home made pizzas. There is a lunch and evening menu available and they serve cask ales, lager and cider as well as cocktails, spirits and hot drinks. Breakfast was included in the hotel price and we had fruit juice, cereal and a full English breakfast with tea and coffee. The staff were very friendly and the service excellent, it was very busy in the evening and people were coming in for breakfast and drinks in the morning. It's a lovely pub with accommodation and we will be coming here again.

Lovely little restaurant with terrace outside. Gorgeous cakes and bakes....did not try anything off the cooked menu but all looked interesting. Super helpful staff . Only reason for 4stars is the outside chairs were so uncomfortable we couldn't bear to stay long.
Mrs P — Google review
Evening meal: Food was tasty but the place lacked atmosphere. Staff swept the floor nearby & the radio was on throughout our evening. They were very noticably closing down at 8.30, & loudly saying "I reckon we'll be out by 9" whilst we hadn't long finished our main, still had full drinks (top ups we had to request ourselves) & we also hadn't been offered desserts. Some ambient music, candles, making sure tables had been offered desserts before shutting the kitchen down & not sweeping until people have left would help with this. The team were nice enough, but a bit more attention to customers & the overall atmosphere would make this feel more like a restaurant rather than a builders site.
Amber R — Google review
The pizzas were absolutely delicious, if not a little parched around the edges. That said, they were still some of the best pizzas I've had in the UK and were on par with some good Italian ones as well (having lived there for several years). The staff were really nice and were just sorry we had no money to tip them, which we would have as they were so good.
Matt D — Google review
Lovely staff - met quite a few different people across our week stay in the village and they always had interesting chat. We went for takeaway pizza (good), dinner sitting in (even better) and best... If you like cheese scones this is the place to go hunting. other good ones are available in the village but these are the best.

Nestled just a mile from the western shore of Lake Windermere, Cuckoo Brow Inn is a charming dog-friendly inn with polished rooms and a cozy pub. The former stables and courtyard have been transformed into a mish-mash of styles, featuring old oak staircases and large bay windows. The 14 contemporary-country style rooms boast large wool headboards and simple painted wooden furniture. Cyclists will appreciate the cycle storage while the fireplace is perfect for drying boots after outdoor adventures.
My husband and I stopped for lunch with our dog after a walk. The service was quick and friendly. I had the fish & chips which was really lovely and crispy, and my husband enjoyed his curry. We would definitely come again when next in the area.

Just home from a lovely break in the Lake District. The Cuckoo Brow Inn was very welcoming and quaint. Shower had great pressure and was lovely and relaxing. We had a family room and space was ample. Good facilities tea, coffee and biscuits provided along with decaf also. Only slight down was radiator needs dusted. Breakfast was excellent, self serve continental and hot breakfast cooked to order with lots of variety. Loads of rabbits running about outside. Staff very welcoming and friendly

My wife and I recently stayed stayed at the Cuckoo Brow Inn, top class service. The staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for you, nothing was any trouble. We stayed in room 7 and the room itself was great. powerful hot shower and a comfortable sleep. If I had to pick anything I would have preferred to be at the front of the building so we had more of a view, but this doesn't take anything away from our stay it's more a preference of I had a choice. The food was beautiful from breakfast to our evening meal and service was prompt. Over all a very enjoyable stay and I'm sure we will be back. Thank you to all the staff at the Cuckoo Brow and your hard work.

This family owned inn is just lovely. They are very personable and really care about their guests. The view was amazing from our room. The food is to die for. Their menu changes due to the season and we were quite satisfied with our meals. We ate there for dinner every day. We did forget to book, but we were able to get a table within 30 minutes. They had the best sticky toffee pudding, so moist and fluffy. And the breakfast is just the best. If you get a chance, stay here or just eat. You won't be disappointed.

Every is amazing here !! The service is incredible, we were out finding petrol for 2 hours at 12 am and they called us to make sure we were ok and to see when we would be back. Everyone is so friendly and the service is amazing. The food is incredible!!! 100% value for money! Plus it is beautiful!

We went to the Cuckoo Brow for Sunday dinner to celebrate a wedding anniversary with our family recently (October 2025). The food was delicious and plentiful and the staff were so polite and efficient (particularly sweet with my young granddaughter). Thank you for making our special day extra special. We will be back.

Absolutely fabulous Sunday lunch!! This was a return visit for us, albeit and good 7 or 8 years apart. The service was excellent and friendly and helped alleviate any worries my daughter had who's vegetarian (I'm not taking ownership of that decision). I did try the nut roast and I have to say was very good, I had the lamb shank however, and it was sublime, as were the vegetables and the yorkshire pub was massive. Safe to say we all enjoyed our lunch and my only regret is not taking a photo for the review. Easy to get to from Bowness via the cross lake ferry dropping you at Ash Landing and a 30 minute pleasant walk.
THE F — Google review
Stopped in with my family for lunch on a rainy day. Service and decor were good but the food ranged from mediocre (wild boar sausages and mash) to terrible (prawn salad, which seemed to have been reheated). Also, the ale I had did not seem to come from a well-kept keg. Could also do with some dedicated cycle parking (racks).

Esquires Coffee Ambleside, located in Market Cross, is a charming café that prides itself on offering locally sourced and fair-trade coffee, tea, and other beverages. The menu includes an array of freshly baked pastries, sandwiches, and salads. Guests can also take advantage of the free Wi-Fi and outdoor seating to soak in the stunning views of Lake Windermere. This franchise is known for its ethical practices and commitment to providing Fairtrade and organic coffee.
Two of us visited Saturday morning (19.10.24) found a table as a sign near the door directs you to do so! The place is clean and has a quirkiness about it! We ordered the ‘Cumberland curl bun (“barm”) & Cumberland & Bacon barm! The service from the lady behind the counter was warm friendly and efficient, the gentleman from the kitchen was less friendly however caused no offence! The place is quite expensive but as a treat was nice.

Lovely breakfast with a decent coffee. I've had better and I've certainly had worse but best coffee I've found so far in Ambleside even if your charging £4.50 for a cortado.
Alex H — Google review
Despite obviously being incredibly busy, staff are attentive and kind. Coffees were fantastic and we didn’t grab food, but the selection looked amazing. Also nice to see dietary information on the menus . Thanks so much !
Devon M — Google review
We have just enjoyed a fantastic and very tasty breakfast at Esquires! The quality of both the food and the service is second none and it was the perfect way to bring our week in the Lakes to an end. Thank you! We will definitely be recommending to family and friends.
Tony C — Google review
Popped in for lunch but was expected to pay £2 extra for the vegetarian option of an already overpriced bacon sandwich. Opted for the vegan sausage roll which was much like dry stuffing in stale pastry which we had to ask to be heated. Staff were moderately helpful but ambleside has so many better options we wouldn't bother going back here.
Daniel S — Google review
On holiday in Ambleside & decided to pop in for a snack. We had homemade sausage roll & chips & poached eggs on sourdough bread. Absolutely delicious 😋. Busy place. Great food & service & reasonably priced. Highly recommend 👌.
Wendy F — Google review
This café has quite a range of mixed reviews, so we decided to just have a mocha and a tea. Both were perfectly fine, as was the service — though there was a bit of a wait to place our order, the staff did acknowledge it with a friendly “thanks for your patience.”

Very expensive for what you get. £11 for this tiny salad is excessive. It tasted good but felt disappointed with the price.

The cafe Altitude is a charming place to enjoy a coffee or lunch, with great views of the surrounding fells. The food is fresh and well cooked, and the service is friendly and welcoming.
If you’re in Ambleside this family friendly cafe is well worth the short walk from the centre of town. The breakfasts are great and the cakes are home made, just look at the indulgent cherry Bakewell cake. But for us the highlight was just how accommodating and friendly the staff are, thank you for giving our family a warm welcome.

Brilliant cafe with, fantastic friendly owners. All home made cake's and ice cream. Wonderful views from the café. Going back for breakfast. Recommend to anyone.

We had a lovely breakfast with a view over the roofs of Ambleside. The Shakshuka and the scrambled eggs on toast were freshly homemade and extremely tasty. A perfect start of the day :)

Really nice cafe, very warm welcome for both myself and my dog. Gave the dog a sausage and gave me a towel to dry him. Really friendly people, lovely baked potato and coffee , great value for money. Nice view from the window seat as well. My favourite cafe of my trip.Very highly recommended.

Came here almost every day on our holiday (only didn't come on their closed days). Such a lovely couple who work there, so friendly and welcoming, food is absolutely amazing, so is the coffee. Stunning views whilst eating breakfast is a bonus! Highly recommend!

What a hidden gem. We arrived close to closing time but the hosts couldn’t have been more helpful and accommodating. They were at pains to insist we didn’t feel rushed and served up delicious food - including a lovely warm piece of cake and ice cream. Delicious! And all with a great view over the rooftops of Ambleside to the fells.

Thirteen Valleys Kitchen is quickly becoming a beloved destination for food lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Nestled in a picturesque setting, this charming eatery offers an array of delightful light meals, including daily-changing soups, hearty sausage baps, and generously-sized toasties made with thick bread. Sweet treats like brownies and lemon drizzle cakes are also on the menu, alongside scrumptious scones served with jam and cream. The ambiance is inviting, featuring chunky benches and soothing music that enhances the dining experience.
We walked straight into the dog area which was super lucky for us. The staff are dead friendly and happy ... the cakes we had are out of the world. Spotless toilets...amazing coffee... yes they don't take cash and yes I personally don't like this but this place has blown me away so much I am still in here writing this review
Yvonne C — Google review
Nicely furnished with new chunky wood tables and benches. Nice photos for sale of local lakes scenery etc. The food was good, tasty and a reasonable quantity for the prices. Cumberland sausage on bun was great & very tasty. Some gluten free options available (a great toasted cheese & ham toasties with salad was one example. Sadly service was lacking when visited. Staff were difficult to communicate with & reluctant to assist. A simple request to change type of bread with soup was met with 'thats the only bread we have' only when pushed to go and check & return with plain (it makes a huge difference to some customers who have hidden difficulties eating). At moderately busy times service was a glacial pace, with waiting time over 15mins for 2 coffees & 1 tea. Sadly, given location (in the Lake District), dogs only allowed in the upstairs section.

A Grasmere Gem with a Warm Heart and Delicious Panuozzo! Nestled perfectly within the bustling Grasmere Gather, the Thirteen Valleys Kitchen is a real find. Its central location in Grasmere village makes it incredibly convenient, and the pricing, while definitely not "cheap," feels reasonable for the quality and experience offered. Stepping inside is like receiving a warm hug. The atmosphere is genuinely inviting, buzzing with a happy energy that's clearly reflected in the staff. They seem genuinely pleased to be there, and that positivity is infectious. The food is where Thirteen Valleys Kitchen truly shines. The menu is extensive, offering something for everyone, whether you're after a quick "grab and go" option, a light bite to fuel your exploration of the Lake District, or a more substantial meal. I was particularly intrigued by their Saturday and Sunday special meals, suggesting a commitment to fresh, seasonal ingredients and perhaps more elaborate creations. However, the real stars of the show are the Panuozzo/pizza sandwiches. These are not your average sandwich; they're something truly special and worth making the trip for alone. The combination of crusty, pizza-like bread and delicious fillings is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Overall a delightful dining experience in the heart of Grasmere. Its warm atmosphere, friendly staff, diverse menu, and especially those incredible Panuozzo sandwiches make it a must-visit. While not the cheapest option in town, the quality justifies the price, making it a worthwhile treat for any discerning food lover exploring the Lake District.

Absolutely loved our lunch at Thirteen Valleys Kitchen cafe! They had plenty of both outdoor and indoor seating options, and we enjoyed eating outside in the sunshine. A good range of food options, and we all enjoyed the food we ordered - two sourdough pizza base sandwiches, and one prosciutto pastry! The service was great, and they make an incredible chai latte!

Popped in here today after discovering the Gingerbread shop nearby is closed on Good Friday. It all worked out for the best - The Gather has such a lovely shop, and the staff in the cafe are very engaging and personable. Not to mention we thought the cream tea we had was one of the best ever. Really delicious. Looking forward to returning in the future. Thanks!

Perfect pit stop after a long day on the bike! We came across this little gem after a long bike ride and it was exactly what we needed. Great coffee and amazing cakes. Super nice inside, really friendly staff, and dog-friendly too. Loved the chilled vibe—felt like a proper reward after a day in the hills. We’ll definitely be back to try the rest of the amazing menu!

I have rarely been into a more obliging welcoming place. I brought my blind small framed,Chinese lady for coffee and a scone. Both the exceptional gentleman staff member who mainly served us and the lady went to lengths to make our stay the pleasure it was. Meant a lot to us both. The lady is Chinese as loves her scones was impressed. I Thought my blind customer coffee was acceptablely hot (she does like quite hot.) But I thought by the time she'd manage to drink it (being blind) would most likely be on cool side so I asked if he could possibly re heat it a little bit part way through. Easily he could have found us a neusence and act accordingly but with warmth,a smile and politeness he just did it & perfectly. THANK YOU. The scone was fresh &lovely, jam was special and lovely, coffee both black and the white lovely, Place Lovely Staff very lovely. Actually think your lamp shades might have been supplied locally by my sister . Exciting interesting furniture. Well done to all concerned Thank you. Visited Thursday morning 3rd April

Nice cafe with good quality food but there’s something odd about the new tables & chairs they’ve installed. We had to move tables after our first table was the wrong height to eat our food. It just felt odd. My wife and I preferred the old cafe & garden centre but I guess this is how things are going in the Lakes with villages predominantly gift shops and cafes now. At least the gifts here seem to be high quality & locally sourced.

Just opened two months ago! Very cute bakery/ cafe in the heart of Ambleside. Free 30 min parking right across the street, or free 1 hour parking about 2 min walk away. Friendly staff! Everything made in house except the bread. The cinnamon roll was out of this world !! Still hot and super gooey, yum. The pain au chocolate was great as well ! Lots of pastries, sandwiches and bowls to choose from- perfect for taking out to the lakes on a hike or a picnic. Clean toilet. Highly recommend !!
