Winchester Cathedral is a medieval Anglican cathedral known for its imposing Norman exterior and Gothic interior. It is one of the largest cathedrals in Europe, showcasing architectural styles from the 11th to 16th century. The cathedral features notable elements such as a 15th-century stone screen, richly carved choir stalls, and a Norman crypt with modern sculpture.
Winchester Cathedral is a must see when visiting the city. It is the longest Gothic cathedral in Europe with stunning Norman and Gothic architecture. We took the free one hour tour which was amazing, the guide covered all the key spots and shared great stories. After the tour you can explore freely and take pictures. Whether you’re into history, architecture, or just want a peaceful place to visit, the cathedral has something for everyone.
Bloomy L — Google review
A lot to see and take in, both in the large interior areas, as well as small details and specific features as well as having a exhibit about the building's history. Worth a visit. Easily spent about 1h and a half looking at burrial sites, architecture, history and art.
A R — Google review
A beautiful cathedral, worth a visit to see the architecture, carvings and stained glass windows. Jane Austen is buried in the cathedral with her memorial stone in the nave. Those interested in history will find plenty to see. Anyone in search of a peaceful place with find it here. There is an entrance fee but it allows free further visits for 12 months.
Tom K — Google review
It is such a nice spot to just have a sit down, not very loud and obviously has a incredible architecture! During my trip to Winchester I stopped by here a few times - the inside of the cathedral is beautiful and worth seeing but tickets are overpriced. Also if you enjoy books, there is a great shop round one of the sides that has something for everyone📚
Jem C — Google review
The guided tour that comes with the admission price is easily worth it. I was bowled over with our guide's (Michael) depth of knowledge and fantastic anecdotes about the cathedral. The ticket is open for a year. There's so much more to find out about this splendid building we will probably be back. Winchester's nice to walk around too. Probably best to avoid peak times.
Andy S — Google review
The staff was really friendly and the cathedral is pretty big and beautiful, definitely worth the time. We chatted for 15-20 min with the staff member in the library (yeah they have an amazing library with beautiful old books) he told us really great stories and gave us some insights on how big of a work goes into working with these. The cathedral overall is really detailed and has an interesting story, it even has a small museum inside.
Levi — Google review
The great cathedral is the primary reason why we wanted to visit Winchester and it did not disappoint. We jumped into one of the tours being offered at the ticket entrance and had such a great experience. The tour took just over an hour, and we spent another hour afterwards exploring the massive space, checking out some of the many sacred and historical items on display (including the Winchester Bible), and paying our respects at the Jane Austen memorial with the added bonus of occasional organ music in the background. A perfect way to spend a half day.
Jeff B — Google review
Highly, highly recommend visiting and taking the guided tour! The volunteers were enthusiastic, welcoming, and very friendly. There was so much history to see, including an exhibition. We had Robert Little as our tour guide, and he truly brought the history to life. He was very knowledgeable, passionate, and engaging in his storytelling! One of the many details I enjoyed was when he pointed out some of the different architectural styles, such as Norman or Gothic. Since the ticket is valid for a full year, he even recommended joining tours with other guides to get different flavours of information and perspectives. Overall, definitely a fantastic experience!

The Great Hall is a captivating 13th-century structure with a rich historical legacy. It stands as one of the finest surviving examples of early English Gothic architecture and is steeped in tales of medieval lore, notably linked to King Arthur and his knights. The hall's significant role in various historical events adds to its allure, having hosted the English Parliament in 1246 and witnessed trials such as that of Sir Walter Raleigh.
This place was amazing. I loved all the stain glass windows that had all the kinds and corresponding people of the reign going down through the windows. The table itself was like looking at King Arthur's Knights round table. I know it's probably not the table, but it's super cool to see in person. A must stop is recommended here.
Debra D — Google review
Local project full of middle age history along with the Round table. Impressive. Worth the visit and definitely worth supporting. We did the three venue option when buying tickets and thought very reasonable. Reccomended.
Somewhere E — Google review
Definitely a must visit. It’s all that’s left of the old castle and dates back to the 1200s. The Round Table on the wall might not be from King Arthur’s time but it’s still really cool to see. Loved the stained glass windows showing all the kings and key figures, and the Norman medieval architecture is just stunning. It’s full of history and the whole place just feels majestic. We did the three venue ticket and thought it was great value. Definitely worth supporting.
Bloomy L — Google review
Everyone focuses on the Round Table. That's fine, but don't skip the rest. The staff are very helpful and friendly, and quite willing to spend the extra time explaining the various tickets, what is where, and what the photography rules are etc. Do take a look at the garden, the giant family tree at the other end of the hall from the table, and the long gallery. The cafe is good for a quick drink and snack, but if you're planning on a meal, plan on a restaurant. That's not meant as a criticism AT ALL Just trying to help you plan.
David B — Google review
A must-visit for history lovers! The Great Hall in Winchester absolutely blew me away. It’s one of the best-preserved medieval halls in England, dating back to the early 1200s. The architecture is stunning – huge Gothic windows, soaring stone columns, and a real sense of grandeur. The highlight has to be the legendary Round Table hanging on the wall, believed to have been built in the 13th century and painted during Henry VIII’s reign. You can really feel the weight of history here – once part of Winchester Castle and a key seat of royal power. Super informative displays, friendly staff, and a beautiful garden outside. Highly recommend!
Jason B — Google review
Had a "touristy" day. Don't believe I've ever been here before. Now I'm wondering why not. Fascinating! Great to see the Round Table in all its glory. And for the pleasure of many a woman you can get fairly close to the costume worn by Colin Firth when playing Mr Darcy in the BBC adaptation of Pride. & Prejudice. That's got to be worth the entrance fee in itself!! Tickets last for a year so I'll be back in the next few months for sure.
David N — Google review
Winchester's Great Hall is an awe-inspiring 13th-century survivor, the last remnant of William the Conqueror's Winchester Castle. Built by Henry III, its scale immediately impresses. The star attraction is the legendary King Arthur's Round Table, though dendrochronology dates it to the late 13th century – still, it powerfully evokes centuries of myth. This hall witnessed pivotal history: Sir Walter Raleigh's 1603 condemnation, the "Bloody Assizes," and once even housed the Domesday Book. Its magnificent hammer-beam roof and historical resonance make it a captivating and essential visit for anyone exploring Winchester's rich past.
Dawid S — Google review
A once great castle stood in Winchester but sadly most of it is long lost. The one remaining gateway is part of the ticket price for the hall. A large table sits on the wall called King Arthur's Round Table but it is much later than when he would have been around.

Wolvesey Castle, also known as the Old Bishop's Palace, is a historic site in Winchester, Hampshire. Built in the 12th century, it served as the residence of the bishops of Winchester. The castle has witnessed significant historical events such as sieges during civil wars and royal weddings. Despite being in ruins today, it remains an impressive landmark along the River Itchen. The name "Wolvesey" originates from a Saxon king's demand for 300 wolf heads annually.
Beautiful place, lovely walk around. To the people in the reviews saying it’s a ruin, yes it’s a medieval castle. Also to the people complaining that it’s sometimes not open, that’s because it’s volunteers who willingly use their free time to open, close and do site checks. Also the castle can’t open if it’s too badly flooded or if there’s recently been an injury at the castle. Been many times and if you’re there at closing the volunteer is always polite and happy to talk about the castle. Lovely place and lovely team
Jenna A — Google review
It was free first of all and it was also accessible as we had a push chair. We walk around town and we follow a route to the ruins of the Castle
Blanca R — Google review
A very interesting piece of history which is only a few minutes walk from the cathedral and in fact is located right next to the current estate of the Bishop. Sadly as with time, parts of the site has now been secured off due to natural deterioration. But if you love history, I would suggest paying a quick visit to the ruins, the boards arounds the site can give you a good idea of what it was once like.
Breaking B — Google review
Beautiful old castle, so impressive. And the history behind it , unbelievable. It does worth a visit so much to see and admire. Winchester is a beautiful town and has so much to offer.
Cristina S — Google review
At each step in you are more amazed by the stone works inside. It’s a lovely distraction, a quiet and peaceful place by the river shore.. and st no charge at all! Well worth the visit

Loved this castle, best of all it was free! Wouldnt pay for seeing it though, its a wreck! 🤣

Quite small set of ruins, free though so it's an interesting little visit in-between other sites. There are refreshments available on site from Wednesday to Sunday.

Chill and relaxing site seeing. Good signage that explains the ruins of the palace. Nice bit of history. Clean. Signs leading to the location helped a little. There is an audio guide available. I didn’t try it so I am not sure how good is it. No tickets needed. Free entry.

Lovely place to visit if you're in Winchester. Some interesting information on the building's past, and a really lovely garden to enjoy a coffee and explore. Can be a bit tricky to cross the road to get to though, so watch out.
Chris I — Google review
Quaint place, lots of history to trundle through and fun, interactive exhibits. You might catch a glimpse of the river otters if you're lucky. Cafe has a fantastic outdoor space. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Would stop by next time we're around. Recommended! Oh, and it is free to visit even for non-members.

Beautiful old mill set in a gorgeous setting. Small but had everything a National Trust property would normally have except parking. A car park can be found just around the corner. A huge thumbs up to the cafe. Could offer my husband gluten, dairy and meat free options.
Tanya B — Google review
National Trust members free. Small garden and lovely cafe, very lovely staff. Thank you for your kindness when my baby boy had a "meltdown".
Aga K — Google review
This is a very interesting place exciting to see the rushing waters of the mill race, and some nice displays explaining functionality. Very nice staff and a little cafe that we missed because we arrived so late.
Dominic C — Google review
Free entry, cute garden sitting area in the back (if you visit the cafe, go there!), and take the stairs to see the water flowing underneath. Cute selection of used books in the gift shop. Heard about this from TikTok when looking for things to do. Worth adding to your day trip list.
Muriah U — Google review
This is a free entry establishment but they do request a donation. After what I paid for the coffee, however, at the cafe I decided they had included a donation in the price. There are resident bats and video evidence of the visiting otters which is amazing to see. It's a pity the machinery doesn't work because that might have been nice to see but still worth a visit!

Winchester City Museum is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts in Winchester. The museum offers fascinating exhibits that delve into the city's rich past, including its time as the capital of England under King Alfred the Great. Visitors can explore various historical periods, from the Roman era to the Victorian era, through engaging displays and artifacts. Additionally, the museum pays homage to renowned figures such as Jane Austen, with a dedicated section showcasing her legacy and contributions.
Excellent pocket sized museum tucked away at the back of the High Street. Charming, friendly staff to point you in the right direction plus a wealth of historical local artifacts covering 2,000 years. I'm not a fan of models but there is a beautiful detailed model of Winchester on the ground floor. I am a big fan of mosaics and there is a beautiful Roman one displayed on the first floor. All the floors are packed with amazing finds, including a skeleton. Loads of dressing up for the kids and give some time to listen to a superb chat about Victorian picnics. It's informative and fun.
Ron B — Google review
The Winchester City Museum provides an overview of the city's history, with some interesting displays about Roman and medieval Winchester. However, I expected a more engaging and interactive experience. The museum is small, and while it has some nice exhibits, it doesn’t leave a lasting impression. Worth visiting if you enjoy local history, but not particularly memorable.
Dmytro M — Google review
Had tickets through the three in one tickets with 878AD. We really loved the museum and it was very much child friendly. Our three year old did not want to leave and loved the dolls house and the small castle to build. It held some lovely pieces to see. Great experience.
Thibaut B — Google review
We visited here as part of a group ticket with the Westgate Museum and Great Hall. The Museum has 3 floors, each covering a different time period - roughly the Iron Age/Roman city, the anglo Saxon and Medieval city and finally the Industrial Revolution city. There was lots to see and read on each floor and plenty of activities for kids too. We spent nearly 2 hours here so there's plenty to keep you busy. The staff were lovely as well, very welcoming.
Marcus H — Google review
I used to live fairly close to Winchester when I was much younger. But I could not understand why it was so very important. Centuries ago it was one of the hearts of medieval England. But now it is a mere shadow of its former self. I decided to spend some time in the Winchester City Museum to see if I could discover some of the secrets of the once great City. It was perhaps the beginning of a long trail of discovery. Of which the antiquated fragments seemed to merge together. Like a great wooden jigsaw puzzle. With corners and edges aligning to a mystic symmetry not previously guessed or imagined. At least not perceived by my feeble young intelligence I was very impressed with the news that the Winchester City Museum were connected to some important archeological digs. I would've very much liked to have been considered for one of the local excavations. And downstairs in the museums basement one of the staff proudly showed me what looked like a small lump of mud. Apparently the lump of mud had been discovered during a 'dig'. I hope that I didn't appear to be too ignorant to participate in contemplating the origins of this mysterious little lump. I almost had another unfortunate mishap were I couldn't see the price tags on the postcards. So I wrongly assumed that they were all free. Luckily the staff explained my error and I paid for the postcards before leaving the museum. Very helpful, friendly staff.
Xavier S — Google review

The Hospital of St Cross in Winchester is one of England’s oldest charities, started around 1132 to help elderly men and feed travelers. It wasn’t a monastery but had its own land to keep things running. Visiting felt like stepping back into a time capsule, with amazing medieval buildings and a unique tradition where travelers get a free horn of beer and bread. Definitely a cool bit of history to check out.

An incredible place. We stopped off for a tea and cake in the lovely tearooms, and learned all about the history of the Hospital of St Cross from the knowledgeable and friendly volunteers. The buildings are so beautiful, there is a lovely air of peacefulness. Thank you for the kind volunteers for giving us the history about this incredible place, and to the lovely porter who gave us our 'dole' (a piece of bread and drink, still given out to any who ask for it, after all of these hundreds of years!). A must visit.

The 400-seat auditorium hosts a variety of professional theater productions, family shows, dance performances, classic dramas, and concerts. Additionally, the theatre runs a youth community program. Visitors can also enjoy traditional Christmas pantomimes during the festive season. The venue is housed in a charming former hotel built in 1850 and is considered one of the most beautiful theatres in southern England.
Lovely cosy theatre with surprisingly good leg room in the stalls. Very modern front of house. Easy to get served. Show was really good, acoustics were great and a fun evening was had. Staff were lovely also.

Great theatre, enjoyed a performance of Dracula. Good facilities and staff friendly. Only quibble is that some of the side balcony seats should be advertised as having a restricted view as we could not see anything happening at the front corner, stage left where quite a lot was happening. We were able to move.
C O — Google review
Venue was lovely, but the Gruffalo child show was hard to follow from my 3yr old grandson's point of view. The costumes didn't reflect the characters. Maybe up close, but not from the back of the audience. The miming of the snake needed to be a proper proper if it was aimed at the younger audience. There was too much adult humour for a childs show. I would recommend age 5yrs upwards.
Susan C — Google review
A lovely little theatre. We have visited a few times to see some of the kids things which tour here, and it's a great way to introduce the little ones to the theatre. The auditorium itself is small but perfectly formed, which really means there are no bad seats. In the foyer areas there is a bar and usually a couple of stands selling programmes and ice cream. This is also small so can get a bit busy before performances, so don't plan on spending too much time at the theatre before your show. All in all every visit we have made to the Theatre Royal has been an enjoyable experience.

These museums cover a wide range of military history, including the Gurkhas, the Hussars, and the Green Jackets. The area also houses Copper Joe's Cafe for visitors to grab a coffee or lunch. While these museums are great for military enthusiasts and casual travelers, they are more recommended for adults than young children.
My first visit to the museums I only managed the rifles museum this time but will definitely be returning. The history of the Regiment through the ages is fascinating. Told by exhibits from the period of time and deployment in the history. From the American war of independence .the battle of Waterloo. With is marvellous battle field model. Continuing into modern times. With exhibits of uniforms and weapons through the ages. And a vast array of medals and decorations. There are toilets. And stair lifts if required. And a cafe close by. And military shop.

A wonderful group of museums set in beautiful buildings and pretty grounds. A huge collection of military history to look at including an impressive number of Victoria Crosses on display and a wonderful diorama of the Battle of Waterloo. Friendly and helpful staff.

A really absorbing museum set within the original buildings is a fascinating half day visit for all ages. An easy walk uphill from the centre of the city so leave your car in the main car parks and relax in the many parks gardens and Cathedral.

Beware, there are two museums! One, on the right side, is FREE, but it's less than half the size of the first left one. The one on the left is much bigger, tells you a bit more about the wars and conflicts, luckily it's not just want the regiment. I didn't have much thing to go upstairs, but I enjoyed downstairs more, it's dedicated to the 20th century. The staff was dead friendly and happy to help with questions about history.

I walked into this place by accident whilst touring Winchester. And boy was it a surprise the greenery at the back is an absolute gem which I didn't expect to see. In terms of the actual museum it's reasonably priced and surprisingly big even in the exhibits which seem small from the outside. (Mainly pointing at the Horsepower exhibit with that comment) Very informative experience and I would go again.

Shame they're not joined up, as paying £30+ to visit them all is too much! However, interesting location and buildings and worth a nosey.
Fiona P — Google review
Well worth a visit to all the professionally laid out museums, each one being unique in their own way. All staff were so friendly , helpful and knowledgeable a big thank you to all of them. Whilst it was horrendous that there were 95,000 lost at the Battle of Waterloo, it is put into perspective nowadays by the loss of over 254,000 Russians in Ukraine presently. A theme running through the exhibits was when a conflict or war needed our British involvement, was how unprepared and lack equipment this country was, due to the lack of political will to spend money on our military. This lack of foresight shines through today with our efforts to help Ukraine.

St. Catherine's Hill, managed by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, is a picturesque chalk hill with an Iron Age fort and the buried ruins of a Norman chapel at its summit. The 220ft climb offers breathtaking views of Winchester city, its famous cathedral, the Itchen Valley floodplains, and the surrounding downland.
Loved our walk to this place. Climb up got the heart beating a bit but well worth the exertion. Great views of Winchester from the top. The place is full of wildlife - very beautiful

St Catherine’s Hill is an easy and therapeutic spot for a quick hike with lovely views over Winchester. It’s peaceful, not too crowded, and perfect for a bit of fresh air and relaxation close to the city.
Bloomy L — Google review
What a lovely place. Not recommended for elderly, pregnant, less-abled though. The walk up does have some steps, but there's a lot of slippery chalk to contend with going up or down the hill. Only been once so maybe there's others ways/paths but we went up 1 way and down another and both slippery in Autumn. Great views at the top. Nice little woods for kids to play hide and seek in. Will definitely visit again.

There is a labyrinth on the NE side (about 60 degrees NE) side of The Clump. The starting point is very close to the clump (see photo). This is the largest labyrinth I have come across in the U.K. Even bigger than the one in Glastonbury (and has less crazy people). It’s is such a pleasant surprise to discover a labyrinth here. Walking a labyrinth is believed to have a meditative effect. A labyrinth is different from a maze in that there is only one way in, and once you reach the centre point of the labyrinth, you turn around and walk back on the same path. Because your brain is not trying to solve problems when you’re walking a labyrinth, and it’s not in a fight or flight mode (not trying to get out of the maze), you can relax, and pay attention to how you feel and how your foot steps land on the ground. Have fun!!

Nestled within the ancient Tudor and Stuart building, Westgate Museum offers a glimpse into Winchester's history. Housed in a former debtor's prison, this atmospheric museum showcases an array of artifacts from the Tudor and Stuart eras. Visitors can marvel at a beautifully painted ceiling dating back to 1554, which commemorates the wedding of Mary Tudor and Phillip II of Spain. The walls bear intriguing inscriptions of graffiti from 16th to 18th-century prisoners.
A 800 year old gem, small spot with medieval prison vibes, some fun Tudor history, and a great rooftop view over Winchester. Quick but worth the stop!

A wonderful treasure trove of antiquated collectibles. Each and every item in this small single room museum has a fascinating story to tell. It is a short but steep climb up a flight of stairs. From the street pavement into the compact museum. And then another short steep climb up to the roof of the Westgate. Where you are treated to a splendid view of Winchester's high street including the Guildhall's clock tower and Saint Giles hill's green and forested grounds. I was grateful to the helpful and friendly staff who arranged a special entry ticket for me which entitles me to visit 3 Winchester museums for a period of one year (City, Westgate and the Great Hall)
Xavier S — Google review
The Westgate Museum is a small historical site with some interesting medieval artifacts and a nice view from the top. However, the experience is quite brief, and there isn’t much to explore. It’s worth a quick visit if you’re already in the area, but I wouldn’t say it’s a must-see.
Dmytro M — Google review
Nice museum. The museum is on the first floor, and there's a rooftop that we could see Winchester city.
Marta D — Google review
A wonderful little museum. They offer combination tickets with other heritage sites and museums in Winchester, and 50% off with Art Pass. I spent about 45 minutes here, mostly trying to decode old graffiti in the walls and Tudor panelling originally from a different building, though they have a lovely collection on display as well. Fantastic staff
D K — Google review
Definitely worth a visit if you've already paid for the Great Hall. There is not loads to see here but definitely some interesting bits, particularly the very old graffiti in the walls. Be sure to enjoy the excellent views from the rooftop as well. It's not a must see, but recommend stopping here if you have the time.
Chris M — Google review
Cute little museum included in Great Hall entry - only one room and a rooftop terrace for admittedly not bad views, but quite interesting. There's also some nice stained glass and lots of mediaeval graffiti to see too which is very interesting.
Adam W — Google review
We visited here with a combined ticket for the Great Hall and City Museum too. The Westgate is quite small but it's interesting to walk around the outside first to see it's original defensive role as one of the city gates. The lady in the ticket office was lovely and very helpful and the museum has, for its size, a lot of exhibits and information including activities for kids. We probably spent about half an hour inside the building.

The Gurkha Museum in Winchester is a hidden gem among the city's military museums, commemorating the remarkable service of Nepalese soldiers to the British Crown over the past two centuries. The museum showcases an array of displays including paintings, uniforms, photos, and artifacts that vividly depict the history and campaigns of these brave soldiers. Visitors can immerse themselves in the unique culture and story of the Gurkhas through interactive touch-screen displays, dioramas, and lectures.
A very interesting museum. Provides a cultural background as well as a full military history of this famous regiment. Well worth a visit, but take your time. It is not a huge museum but well worth spending an hour or two reading the info in all of the sections

The Gurkha Museum is truly a must-see! It offers a fascinating insight into the history of the Gurkha soldiers and their incredible contributions, especially during WWI. The exhibits are well-curated and you really get to feel the hard work and sacrifices of the Gurkha army. One of the highlights for me was the mannequin corners — they’re so realistic that it feels like you're stepping back in time. It’s not just informative, but also immersive. Highly recommend visiting to learn about such an inspiring part of history!

If you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle of historic exploration, Keats' Walk offers a serene riverside experience that pays homage to the renowned poet John Keats. This picturesque path winds through Winchester, where Keats found solace during his stay in 1819. Starting at the iconic King Alfred statue, you’ll meander past significant landmarks like the majestic Cathedral and Kings Gate, before reaching the enchanting grounds of Winchester College and Wolvesey Castle.
Lovely peaceful walk through the water meadows alongside the chalk stream of the Itchen river.

Beautiful walk in nature.
K L — Google review
If you ever find yourself in Winchester with a bit of time and a love for fresh air, Keats Walk is a must! It’s a gentle, scenic trail that takes you from the city centre to the Hospital of St Cross — and yes, it’s named after that Keats, who wandered here in 1819 and ended up writing To Autumn, one of the most beautiful poems ever. The walk itself is lovely: peaceful water meadows, the River Itchen bubbling along, birds doing their thing, and the occasional dog living its best life. It’s not strenuous, but it’s definitely soul-soothing. There are signs along the way with snippets of Keats’ poetry, which makes you feel a bit more cultured — even if you’re just out for a casual stroll. It’s quiet, and feels like a secret slice of countryside tucked inside a historic city. Whether you’re a poetry fan or just someone who enjoys a good walk with a view, Keats Walk delivers.

A gentle, two-mile round-trip walk south from Winchester past the cathedral, the College, Jane Austen's house, then through the water meadows along the River Itchen to St Cross, probably the oldest known charity still functioning from 1132. Return the same way or along Kingsgate Road, or walk a little further south, cross the valley along Five Bridges Road and stroll back next to the Navigation, possibly stopping at the Handlebar Cafe up on the old railway embankment.

The Chesil Rectory is a charming restaurant located in a 600-year-old Grade II listed medieval building in Winchester. It has been voted as the restaurant of the year and offers modern British cuisine in a dining room adorned with original features like oak beams and open fireplaces. The menu features creative dishes such as ballantine of duck, peppered local venison, ham hock terrine, and pan-fried hake.
It's an incredible setting (try for a window seat to get a great view of King Arthur!). The meals are of the highest quality & the wine list is perfect! But the very best thing about the Chesil Rectory is the quality of the service! Simply outstanding! We went for South African wine dinner that was, as usual, absolutely perfect!! Update - went back - chose from the a la carte menu - it was even better!! Wouldn't have thought that was possible!!

We went as a celebration of our Wedding Anniversary. This is superb restaurant. I hope to go again and thoroughly recommend it. Very good service, just the right amount of interaction and care. Very nice food . Good wines and a lovely historical building.

We came here to celebrate my husband’s birthday and had an excellent experience. Booking was very easy and confirmed straight away. The location is very convenient, right next to a multi-storey car park. Drinks were great and even the easy bites were full of flavour. I had the lamb dish – the meat was beautifully tender with no strong lamb smell, and the potato-mash with tomatoes pieces and garlic chips gave it a lovely sweet, sour and savoury balance. The cheese plate was more standard, but the Port Wine was excellent. A wonderful surprise was the birthday message on the plate, which came with complimentary sweets – such a thoughtful touch! The restaurant is set in a beautifully decorated old house, which gives a real sense of dining in a historic place. Everything is well organised and the tables are spaced comfortably. We truly enjoyed the dinner and would highly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion.

A superb restaurant serving high quality dishes with an extensive selection of wines. The autumnal tasting menu was delicious, especially the Velouté and Partridge courses. Knowledgeable and friendly front of house team and the classy cosy atmosphere was expectional. Highly recommend and be sure to reserve in advance.

Loved this gorgeous, historic, atmospheric place, with classic, yet adventurous, food. Erika was so lovely even after super long day for her, I am sure (as i had very late lunch here). Chicken terrine with microherbs and shitake mushrooms was a thing of beauty. Their upstairs area is gorgeous. So if you are 4 or more, ask to sit upstairs.
L A — Google review
I booked and went solo, since I'm travelling on my own. I was ragingly curious about the building, and wanted a meal that definitely didn't come with "fries", or bacon. Was not immediately put next to the loos, so plus marks for that. The building is from the 1450s or so, low ceilings, small doors, creaky and undulating boards taken from old ships (often used at the time: making planks with ye olde tools would have been a pain, even if you had plenty of wood). Charm, charm, charm. Tall men stooped until seated. You step down into the building from outside, so when seated in the front ground floor rooms you look through the window with your head at about the knee-level of passing pedestrians: novel! I saw a bit of upstairs, equally gorgeous. This would be a great option for a special occasion out, or just a wonderful indulgence. I was treated well, and given *excellent* advice about wine pairings. I had trout for entree, which was tasty and delicate; then the lamb, a stronger flavour, both lamb and alliums, but well-balanced, cooked well (neither raw nor overdone) and delicious. Then the brandy snaps with the recommended dessert wine, which together - and individually - were amazing. It was not cheap, but really worth it. It was too classy a place to take photos, but I could've driven my foodie friends nuts with envy, I think. Other guests were primarily couples. I wasn't made uncomfortable.

Went to The Black Rat for our anniversary recently and was not disappointed. The staff were very attentive and professional. The food was absolutely stunning. This was our first time eating food of this level and it was such a great experience. My personal favourite was the cucumber sorbet with compressed melon balls, which was out of this world!

Wonderful restaurant. The standard of the food was very high as you would expect. The selections of gin available was great and I really enjoyed trying some new varieties. The service was very good and the staff attentive. The set lunch menu is reasonable especially given the quality of the food and how tasty it was. The setting is a little quirky as it is an old building and the restaurant appears to have been a old pub or tearoom at some point.

Had an absolutely fabulous meal here last night. It’s far from full so far, following all the COVID lockdowns, but the food was just perfect. First thing they bring was bread…two pieces each: a ciabatta and a black bread (coloured with squid ink). Hard to get a good photo of the black bread as it is soooo black but both delicious and unusual and this set the tone for the rest of the meal. Starters were “Barbecued quail breast, confit guinea fowl leg gyoza, soy pickled shiitake mushroom, grilled enoki, glazed bok choi, teriyaki” for me and “Citrus cured chalk stream trout, chilled beetroot & wasabi gazpacho, nasturtium leaf & herb oil, cucumber relish” for Sue. Both were perfectly executed and a very complex set of flavours that worked together superbly…the chef deserves a medal just for dreaming them up. Then I had the “Dry aged Wooley Park free range duck, honey glaze, liver & confit leg, duck fat carrot, date & Lapsang Souchong, New Forest spring greens, hazelnut dukkah” and Sue had “Dorset lamb neck, compressed green pepper & cucumber, sea beet, confit garlic & nori pommes puree, lamb bone sauce”….both of which were perfectly prepared and presented. I cannot praise the chef enough for the flavour and texture combination…just fantastic. Dessert was Meadowsweet madeleines, miso butterscotch sauce…and the madeleines were perfect. We had cheese too…a nice selection of local cheeses but the Barkham Blue was the highlight there…not something I had heard of but wonderful blue cheese. The service was not quite at the level I’d expect, given the quality of the food, but certainly not bad, and the wine list had depth. Little bit surprised that they didn’t have a tasting menu…but we’re just emerging from the COVID pandemic, so perhaps this is something that they’ll do in future…the idea makes my mouth water all over again.

Celebrated our anniversary with dinner at The Black Rat last night and were amazed at the quality of the food as well as the service. Hand sanitizer was available on entry and all staff wore masks as well as making clear the subtle differences in service that are to be expected given the pandemic however none of the changes removed any enjoyment from the experience. Will definitely be visiting again, the food was fantastic and the place has a relaxed feeling that is perfect for a date night.

We were bought a gift voucher as a wedding present and went last night. The choice of food was very varied and made the choice a little dilemma.our choices are as in the pictures and were excellent. Wine list is extensive. Attentive staff. If you like gin they have separate menu for that. Lots of different gins. It's not a cheap experience as you expect but would definitely come back, I understand they have heated outside seating so maybe try that. If I had any criticism which I didn't really but it would be the lighting which was quite dark and it made it difficult to see what we were eating.

It prides itself on being one of the oldest bars in England, boasting an unconventional layout with nooks and crannies, low ceilings, and tiny doorways that add to its unique charm.
Came here with a couple of mates while it was absolutely hammering it down outside! The sign outside caught our eye stating it was the England’s oldest pub! We were warmly welcomed by Jess, Terri & Amalia who explained to us that we were welcome to sit anywhere and order at the bar when we were ready! We ordered 3 Vintage Cheddar & Bacon Burger (£14.25) and when I tell you it was easily one of the best burgers I had this year so far! The cheddar and beef were just delightful to devour! The fries and sauce which I think was BBQ was an added taste that I wasn’t expecting, but was happy to also demolish! The head chef Jordan is a master at his craft and guarantee me and the boys will be coming back try more of the menu! The staff make one of the oldest pubs in England feel so welcoming, a home away from home, the fire on, lots of life left in this old building! If you’re Winchester it’s a must visit! I don't normally leave reviews but I'm going to make an exception here as it is well deserved. Stumbled across the Royal Oak on a visit to Winchester. This is a lovely old pub, perhaps the oldest in England, steeped in history. We sat in the old cellar area downstairs. We've been coming here for years on the way back from Southampton cruise terminal. We love Winchester, and this pub has a history going back to 1002. It's a Greene King pub, so the beer is top notch - albeit at £5.40 a pint. Having just come back from Mediterranean locales where drinks are half the price it's definitely a shock to the system. No wonder pubs are closing down. They do great food here. We've never had a bad meal, and fish and chips here is something of a tradition for us. Freshly cooked and piping hot the quality is very good. Since our last visit, though the portion sizes have been reduced a tad. The fish isn't quite as chunky, the chips rather fewer on the plate. But you won't leave hungry, and they haven't skimped on the quality. Main course: 2 x fish chips & peas, 1 x Mac n Cheese with garlic bread, 3 IPA and a (rather acidic) white wine £73.

Thank you the Royal Oak. I love you !

Although the staff and atmosphere and the venue was very good any good work was undone by the substandard food and the general cleanliness, especially the toilets. Food wasn’t really up to scratch.. Lukewarm and possibly undercooked. No point signing the board to say that the toilets have been cleaned and when it was quite apparent they hadn’t.. ticking the box for the head office isn’t good enough. They actually need to be cleaned. A pub with all that history deserves better.

The King Alfred the Great Statue in Winchester commemorates the renowned Saxon ruler who successfully defended Wessex against Viking invasions. After securing his kingdom with fortified towns, he established a well-equipped royal army and united all of England's kingdoms. The statue, erected in 1901 to mark the millennium anniversary of his death, stands at 4.5m tall and weighs over five tons, making it an impressive sight for visitors entering the city.
It's fame is possibly why most visitors come to Winchester. Impressive and nostalgic, too, for those told the story of the burned cakes in primary school.

Unveiled in 1901 to mark 1,000 years since his death, this statue celebrates the man who united England and gave Vikings a proper headache. Designed by Hamo Thornycroft, Alfred holds his sword like a cross—symbolising both battle and belief. But in true British fashion, the granite base was installed upside down, and no one’s bothered to fix it. Classic.. Locals love him, tourists snap selfies, and there’s even a pub named Alfie’s nearby. Legend says if a virgin walks around the statue three times, he’ll lower his sword. Spoiler: he hasn’t yet..

It's a statue of King Alfred. If you like Anglo Saxon history, he is the OG. Well worth a quick detour to take a look as it is an impressive bronze.

Rick Stein, Winchester is a sophisticated and diverse dining establishment in Winchester, England. Owned by Rick Stein, it offers a wide range of dining options including seafood dishes like fish curry and fish pie, as well as land-based options inspired by Rick's travels around the world. The restaurant brings a taste of Cornwall to Winchester and is popular among food enthusiasts for its fresh seafood offerings. With its modern atmosphere and varied menu, it caters to diners of all ages with an extensive selection of culinary experiences.
I had the pleasure of dining at Rick Stein Winchester and it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. The restaurant itself is beautifully presented, and the food was absolutely delicious – fresh, full of flavour, and cooked to perfection. The waiting staff were polite, attentive, and always smiling, which created such a warm and welcoming atmosphere. They went above and beyond to make my mother’s birthday a truly special occasion, which made the evening even more memorable. While the seafood and fish dishes are truly exceptional, the menu also offers a fantastic variety of meats and vegetarian options, making it a great choice for everyone. I would strongly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a high-quality dining experience in Winchester. A real gem!

My first visit at a Rick Stein in Winchester for dinner and the food was mediocre for me. The Daal I had ordered was too bland in flavour since I prefer a bit more spice to my food. The Fish and Shashimi was great. The starter portions are small but since we were sharing and ordered different dishes between us we got to try more dishes, the mains are a decent amount. That said, the service truly stood out: Micky who looked after us was extremely friendly, attentive, and warm from start to finish. The staff made the evening feel special, even if the dishes didn’t quite shine. Worth a visit for the atmosphere and hospitality.

Restaurant Review This restaurant is a solid choice. The staff are smart, friendly, and very attentive, and the service is quick. The food is clearly fresh and handmade, right down to the sauces, and while it isn't Michelin-star quality, it's tasty and fresh—perfect for a satisfying meal. However, a few minor details could be improved. The bread was served cold with rock-solid butter, which was a bit of a letdown. While the fish and chips were fresh and tasty, you can find better options in London. Overall, it's a great spot that deserves a solid 4 out of 5 stars.

This is our second time we have set lunch at a Rick Stein’s eatery. Yet our experience this time is kind of disappointing. The crust of chicken Katsu curry is crispy at all and the curry sauce is too sweet and too few. The chocolate pavé is also too salty in my humble opinion. However, I must admit that we have not tried its a la carte menu and dishes for the others tables do look far more appealing.

Some of the best food I've eaten at a Restaurant. Give this place a Michelin star already! Incredibly tasty Scallops, Seafood curry and a 'Winchester Pudding' which was a lovely local touch and paired perfectly with the accompanying clotted cream. Yes, it's expensive but it's worth every penny. Special mention goes out to Ali Ali, our excellent waiter.

Visited Monday 20 October - fantastic meal here offering surprising value for money. But the star of the show was our waiter (I think his name was Ed) we were a large group just walking in with no booking and from start to finish his approach was first class. Great food wonderful service if you have not been to this lovely restaurant I would highly recommend you do. Thanks for a lovely evening.

Pub
The Black Boy is a unique pub in Winchester with an eclectic and quirky antique emporium decor, featuring taxidermy, large movie posters, and assorted knick-knacks. It prides itself on being a traditional backstreet boozer serving local ales from various breweries. The pub offers both indoor seating with a cozy atmosphere and outdoor seating in the sheltered garden.
We love this pub, and we often walk here with our dog in the evening. The staff are very friendly and it is a great example of a real public house. We love the fact you can sit next to a real open fire. There are a good selection of real local ales.

Super friendly staff, they have BBQ nights, the atmosphere is on the next level, they really nailed it. I recommend going in ordering something and just exploring the building, it's really weird and there are always new things you can find. Every room is different, I don't even know how to describe it It's just weird but in the best way possible :D

This place defines "quirky". Can't really describe it - so check out photos and set for yourself. And then go visit. Great selection of drinks. Amazing decor
Phin H — Google review
An eccentric pub that offers a good range of beers, ciders and spirits. The staff are friendly, and there’s plenty of seating. The highlight has to be the decor - there’s really nothing else like it in Winchester, and you have to see it for yourself! They’ve got outdoor seating for the summer, and lots of fire places for a cozy winter catch up with friends. They’ve do food on weekends I believe, but this does change.
Joel P — Google review
Haven't sampled the delicious delicacies but the lager and taxidermy is 10/10. Stuffed foxes, giraffes and even sea horses! This is similar to the natural history museum, but with lots of real ales and tasty stouts.
BURR G — Google review
Nice pub with a good selection of ales and cidar. Quirky decorating gives it an unique atmosphere. Fair warning, there are quite a few stuffed animals around.
Beth — Google review
So, I have conflicted feelings about this. I've been to this pub a few times and while I can say the decor is great and very entertaining; it hardly makes up for the sub-par service, over priced drinks, general lack of hygiene, and unwelcoming attitude of the staff. There is a specific bartender that I have noticed making racist comments, including squinting her eyes and doing accents. I don't know her name but she's blonde and an older woman. The bar is incredibly sticky, normal to an extent in a pub I know. However there were flies constantly trying to land in the drinks we were served. It was actually disgusting. The staff I noticed were also on their phones, not cleaning even the visible spills and dirty glasses that were in all the rooms we looked in. Eventually we sat in the garden courtyard area, and the seating is very pleasant. Again its a lovely looking pub. In addition, this pub is lacking in facilities for baby changing and accessible toilets. There are multiple steps in order to get to the toilets which isn't ideal if you are with someone whose mobility is restricted. On other trips we've gotten food, the best bit of any visit and the only reason we come back. The pulled pork is to die for. Unfortunately the food vendor is not a part of the pub and is instead an external contractor. For this reason I will not be including the wonderful service and attitude of that man in this review.

Outstanding! From the attentive staff, to the amazing food they serve, to the wonderful atmosphere that transcends and transports you into a world of love, culture and art. We discovered this piece of gem by pure chance, when exploring the city centre and thought we should try it out, as it looked very interesting when passing through…what a wonderful surprise we’ve had! The best basque cheesecake I’ve tried so far in the UK! We booked in for breakfast having walked past many times. A friendly local independent which has a well constructed menu with a range of breakfasts. The crumpet with egg, was flavoured with chilli and served with bacon and maple syrup. It was delicious. We found it to be a relaxed and quiet environment and a good way to start the morning. The hot chocolate was very tasty. Looking forward to returning to try an evening with drinks.

This is a great place to visit for either breakfast, lunch or just tea and cake. They had great gluten free options and the staff were very careful with the allergy. Winnall Moors Nature Reserve is a serene oasis of greenery and wildlife nestled in the bustling city of Winchester. This 64-hectare protected meadowland features a chalk stream, diverse plant life including rare green-flowered helleborine and willow trees, and an abundance of wildlife such as breeding dragonflies. The reserve offers a 5-mile walking route with picturesque views of water meadows and Fulling Mill.
Such a lovely place to visit on a spring/summer day! Has two different routes (when the back field is open) and is almost completely flat, so good for people who can't climb!

A beautiful, peaceful nature reserve right in the middle of Winchester. Perfect for a relaxing walk, spotting wildlife, or just taking a break from the city. The paths are well kept, and there’s always something new to see through the seasons.

Winnall Moors Nature Reserve is off the beaten track around 10/15 minutes from the City Centre. You will enter a peaceful area with scattered places to sit while traversing the region. The pond area in particular is secluded and gives you a chance to admire the ducks and have sight of the overgrown marsh. There are many secluded spots and areas to locate. It is a reserve that requires frequent visits to explore and you will unlikely see it all on one visit. Highly recommend visiting when in Winchester.
Louis C — Google review
We were not exactly expecting much from a nature reserve in the middle of Winchester.. and the only reason we decided to check it out, was because I spotted it on a map, when we planned to visit the London Canera Exchange a few months back, which we never did... Sadly a part of it was closed off due to grazing animals, but we eventually came across the pond, in the centre of the Reed Beds and it turned out to be an amazing day... the highlights were the Reed Warblers and Reed Buntings... Highly recommended to anyone interested in photography.. oh and one thing, if you own a dog, you cannot take it into the reserve, which for me personally, was a bonus as dogs and water are like magnets and while I love dogs, there are certain places where they simply shouldn't be allowed. Entry to the reserve is free, though parking opposite the pub, just down the road, is pay and display... but £2.20 for 3 hours, is actually very reasonable
Andrew L — Google review
Once we found this wonderful oasis of calm, we have been back multiple times. As a mobility restricted person, I have to use my mobility scooter. So it was fabulous to find the car park right next to the entrance so I didn't have to cross the busy Rd. This site is completely accessible with gates instead of kissing gates and flat pathways and boardwalks both wide enough for my scooter with room to spare for others to pass round me. I love that dogs and bicycles are not allowed, this saves me the torture of trying to get dog poo off of my wheels before I put my scooter back in the car. A great reserve for spotting many bird species , deer and other small animals and not too long a circuit. Watch out for entitled joggers though.
Paula W — Google review
My first visit, a very pleasant evening walk around the circuit, this is a wonderful place for wildlife, I only saw the more common birds, but chiffchaffs were singing, a true sign of spring. No dogs are allowed, which is a real bonus for those ground nesting birds The Itchen looked great in the evening sunshine, and the gnarled trees added to the beauty of the place
Mick P — Google review
A lovely free place to visit (if you can find it) just a 10 minute walk along the river behind City Mill. For some reason it doesn't seem to be sign posted and I couldn't find the Water Vole Trail supposedly way marked from the Abbey gardens. So, if you'd like to go there walk down Water Lane (to the right of City Mill) and you'll see a riverside path on the left. Follow it to the end then cross the road and you'll find the entrance on the left - check out the photos so you'll know what you're looking for. It gets quieter and more interesting as you get further from the city and you can't get lost, it's an easy circular route. A great place to use the free Merlin app on your phone to identify birds around you.

Chester Zoo is definitely very good for the preservation of a number of endangered species and as such deserves a lot of support. The enclosures for the animals are large however the knock on effect is that it can be difficult to see some of the animals. The boat trip was really good. Nice and tranquil way to see some of the enclosures from different angles. The food offerings on site were varied and reasonably priced. All in all a good day out for young and old alike. Less able are well catered for. It really is a very pleasant day out.

What a beautiful building inside and out! I had the pleasure of visiting today to see my sister graduate university, everyone was kind and helpful and the building was amazing some of the artwork we saw was amazing!
Jade H — Google review
A very special building in a very special location. My guess is that the roof section/clock tower is probably very important as well. I am fairly certain that the architectural style is not very abundant in the area today. I visited the building a long time ago. Unfortunately it was closed and only the main hall was open for special events. It's a great loss to the area in which very important architecture should thrive. A lot of tremendously valuable architecture has been lost in Winchester. With little or no hope of its revival. It's interesting that a peculiar minority of individuals used to loiter amongst the stones of Winchester cathedral's grounds. Although they seemed to know their way around the relatively small City. Their message appeared to be slightly Machiavellian. Perhaps the area attracts certain groups of individuals for a clandestine purpose. Whatever the answer may be, the Guildhall and its grounds will hopefully stay intact. For the main purpose of spiritual & mental enlightenment. And maybe an ironic juxtaposition to the divine rituals of the Cathedral and the church.

We hosted our wedding reception there 16th August 2025. We used the Wintonian Bar for the fizz reception, and for the main bar area, and then the King Charles Hall for the wedding breakfast. The Wintonian Bar was fit for purpose, it was a little warm in there, but they have massive windows that should be opened which does rapidly cool the room. The King Charles Hall is a lovely room for a meal. The paintings and chandeliers self-decorate the room. We were very happy with our wedding reception.

Only sad this was that the bar sold no sugar free drink so for the whole concert we drank tap water as that's all they had sugar free. No diet drinks no zero drinks and no bottle water. Just tap water in a plastic cup. Was a real shame as we are coming to another concert In November so we will have to bring our own whitch I'm not sure you can but I see little choice if I want a sugar free drink. Due to been a diabetic. Was a let down.

878AD is a recently established tourist attraction in Winchester, which has quickly become popular among visitors since its opening in late 2022. This destination offers an engaging experience featuring live actors who portray the daily lives of Anglo-Saxon residents. Additionally, after exploring the museum, visitors can further immerse themselves in Winchester's history through an augmented reality experience provided by an interactive app.
The game is very well presented, although navigation is not really easy. To enjoy the app one needs time and a higher level of digital literacy. The ‘exhibition’ is a fun learning space for children and school groups, although perhaps less so for adults (there are still a lot of things you can do). All in all, I think £10 would be very good investment here, and I would love to see further explorations of this kind.
Huiling Z — Google review
Great day out. The 878 AD experience begins by spending an hour or so in the venue setup in the shopping centre, where you time travel back to 878 AD and explore a number of areas telling you about a variety of Saxon life. Your tour is aided by historic people of Winchester (actors), who do a great job of bringing it all to life. It is really interactive and interesting. When you're done, there is a big app you can download and use to guide you around various landmarks of the city, whilst completing augmented reality activities, which adds another hour or 2 to the whole experience. Which we thought was great!
Mat M — Google review
A wonderful, interactive experience for children. I had fun too. The staff were engaging and fun, and took good care of my child. She remembers the experience very well. And learnt so much through the practical, hands on way of learning history. We booked as a homeschool family and they catered wonderfully to our needs.
Paul G — Google review
My 8yr old said everything was excellent and it was “the best museum he’d ever visited”. We enjoyed time travelling back to 878AD and talking to the Winchester Anglo Saxons. We both learned loads. Plus we enjoyed all the interactive activities. We liked it so much we were there for much more than the recommended 45 minutes. After that it took too long to download the app to do the augmented reality tour of the City. But once we’d gone through that painful process, he also loved doing the tasks set to complete the tour.
Stephen H — Google review
Probably the best museum in the city. Most museums are really just walkable Wikipedia pages but this one comes with true immersion with fantastic live actors with a lot of knowledge of Winchester's history so don't be afraid to ask them any questions!
Molten I — Google review
Entertaining, but could be better at accessibility. As an autistic person the venue is very loud and includes a lot of shouting with the actors, which was a bit much. Other than that it’s good fun for all ages, I liked the costumes!
Yodeling F — Google review
Here’s the thing: you’ll get as much out of 878AD as you put in. If interacting and engaging with the actors is something you’d enjoy - then go for it. You’ll learn a lot: my party of three adults certainly did! We completed a little trail learning about the arduous way bread was made from scratch; we learned about manufacturing techniques for pottery, woodwork, metalwork and more; we were shown the routes the Vikings took into Wessex via East Anglia and Mercia - and that’s just for starters. We had a bag of coins and enjoyed learning about bartering in the marketplace (somehow I managed to include two days labour from the other two people in party to get prices down without them realising I hadn’t actually volunteered myself ;) I don’t play video games personally, but I found the details about developing the exhibition via the work done on Assassins Creed fascinating and seeing so many physical contemporary artefacts really added to the whole experience. Could you get round this in five minutes and call it poor value for money? Yes. But you’d be missing the point. Start before you even go in - say YES to putting on an Anglo Saxon tabard; say YES to getting coins to barter with; say YES to grabbing a little detective checklist and pencil to use as you go round and definitely say YES to interacting with the actors. They are talented, well-trained and incredibly knowledgeable. I must just apologise for us keeping you all later than 17:00! We could’ve stayed longer.

It is renowned as one of the most popular Christmas markets in Hampshire and the UK. The market runs for a month, offering visitors ample time to explore the beautifully decorated stalls and immerse themselves in the joyful ambiance.

Visited last week and whilst it was bustling and festive it felt a little different to previous years. Perhaps it was just the weather or maybe because it wasn’t night time. It’s still enjoyable and the food is still expensive but it’s nice to browse for a few Christmas ideas.

Went last year and enjoyed a great Christmassy Yorkshire pudding wrap, this year they replaced it with indian food??? What the hell has that got to do with Christmas? The "Christmas" alternatives being bland hog roast or totally miserable excuses for bratwurst. Do not even get me started on the appalling donuts. However, gift stalls are fantastic, try to go widweek if you can

We stayed in Winchester on Sunday night so we could visit in the evening and again on Monday morning, to combine with some Christmas shopping. The market is a little tricky to find but once we found our way, it was fantastic, with lots of stalls, a central food area and even live music from a local children's steel band. The atmosphere was very festive, especially with the backdrop of the cathedral and the beautiful lighting. I particularly liked the gluhwein🍷 and roasted chestnut 🌰 sellers. Recommended.

This place is pure magic! Free to enter, with fairly quick moving queues. Stepping into this festive wonderland feels magical right from the start. The twinkling lights, the aroma of mulled wine, and the delightful sounds instantly whisk you into the holiday spirit. The market's charm lies not only in its picturesque setting within the cathedral grounds, but also in the wide array of artisanal crafts and delectable treats on offer. From beautifully crafted ornaments to unique handmade gifts, there's something for everyone, making it a shopper's paradise during the festive season. The heartwarming ambiance is further enhanced by the cheerful vendors, adding a personal touch to the experience. And let's not forget the culinary delights—indulging in the delicious seasonal food and beverages is an absolute treat. The mulled wine and scrumptious festive treats are simply divine. It's a magical destination that embodies the true essence of the holiday season and creates unforgettable memories for all who visit.

Jane Austen's last days - Plaque is a significant site for fans of the renowned British novelist. Located at 8 College Street in Winchester, this was where Austen spent her final months before her passing in 1817. Although the house itself cannot be visited, a plaque on the wall serves as a poignant reminder of its historical significance.
Passed by and took a picture because JANE AUSTEN! It is a nice looking home with a plaque. Then sat a few meters away figuring out where to go next. In the next few minutes a few group of women arrived to take their pictures. It was nice to see 🥰
M G — Google review
This is solely for a quick photo opportunity for the last resting place at Jane Austen's House. The house is simple and in line with the street. It is not open to the public and there is a Blue Plaque that provides a reference to her being there in her last days. You will spend not even a minute there and it is not worth going out of your way to visit.

I get quite emotional about Jane Austen and touring her last place of residence was no exception. The house owned, renovated and maintained by Winchester College will be open until November as part of the celebrations, commemorating 250 years since her death. A must visit for students, fans and tourists alike to pay homage to England's finest author. Sorry Shakespeare fans.

Lovely house in a picturesque village, having an interest in history we had a great day out, some original furniture and amazing history. Parking is a little difficult as it can get very busy but we'll worth it. Some other lovely thatched cottages in the village as well as the little church and manor hall which are also worth a look.
Tony J — Google review
Ah, don't be fooled, this isn't the house where Jane lived. Oh no, instead this is the residence that Jane spent her last days in, so not quite as cheery a place as that slightly more charming gaff of hers in Chawton  To further add to your disappointment, it's a private house whereby the best viewing you're going to achieve is sticking your nose up against the net curtained windows. There's a blue plaque above the door, a bay window, a chimney, a front door and some windows but that's all can be said really. A bit of history for you. In 1816, Jane began to suffer from Addisons disease, became weaker and finally pegged it on the 18th July 1817. They buried her at Winchester cathedral, mainly because it was handy and pretty much meant just jumping over the garden fence. If you like the outside of houses then this could be one for you but if you like Jane Austen, maybe go to the other house or stay at home and read Pride And Prejudice, or something.

Wine bar
Nestled in the heart of Winchester, The Black Bottle stands out as a quintessential British pub that offers a delightful escape from the frenetic pace of nightlife. With its relaxed ambiance, it’s the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy quality time with friends or family. The friendly staff are dedicated to ensuring your experience is top-notch, serving drinks just how you like them.
Really enjoyed the concept of this bar, the first I've visited. The multiple room set up of this bar is quirky and adds a sense of comfort and adventure upon finding a good spot! Wine is served via self service machines which are operated using a pre credited card at the bar. You can have a taster or small/large glass of wine from the machine. The staff were helpful, explaining everything about the bar and what they suggested our card should be credited with; there were 8 of us and we had £80 on the card. This was enough for one glass each plus an additional 4 tasters of some more premium wines.
Lloyd E — Google review
I'm not a wine drinker but this place was fun to visit and quite original. Load up a card with an amount and go make your way through one of the 5-8 (can't quite remember) different quirky little rooms. All wine is self serve, but beers, spirits and soft drinks are available downstairs at the bar. Just after the bridge, opposite the Bishop on the Bridge pub.
Darren — Google review
Favourite wine bar. An absolute must. Coravin wine dispensing system where customers use a pre-paid card and dispense their own wine. The best thing is that any single wine is replaced just three times before a totally new wine is used in its place. Lovely and cosy yet vibrant inside too.
Tom D — Google review
Really nice relaxed place.if you like wine then it’s great, you get a card from the bar and load it with money, you then go into different rooms which have wine bendy machines, I would say on average It’s £5 a glass of wine. You can order beer and other drinks at the bar. I did take a fall down their stairs because of the layout but apart from this it was cool.
Danielle B — Google review
Quirky, cool and different. Great selection of different wines and plenty of classic board games as well as new. Staff are friendly, helpful and welcoming.
Tom F — Google review
Nice concept, reasonable selection of wine, interesting decor and layout, but the technology malfunctioned on three separate occasions during one visit. The machine thinks there’s more wine in the bottle than there really is, which results in short measures and reduced choice. We also found it a little pricey considering the ‘self-serve’ nature of the set up.
Red S — Google review
Relaxed environment. Fun gimmick of the card and wine vending machines. Definitely worth a look if you want a wine evening. Wines all have a very good amount of info on them for the uneducated like myself, and the taster size plus the literature should let you find something you like even if you've never had wine before. Things that aren't wine are priced quite highly, so give the wine a go. Great sized tables/rooms, fun table top traditional pub games.
James M — Google review
I used to go here often several years ago and excitedly revisited here recently during a trip to Winchester. I looked forward to chatting about wine to knowledgeable staff and enjoying a wide variety of interesting wines. Unfortunately it seems it has gone down hill a bit since then. Disappointingly, during my visit the wine dispensing machine malfunctioned multiple times meaning I kept having to get the staff to refund my card and I was unfortunately unable to try many of the wines which should have been on offer. I also found the selection to be less varied than I remember it being previously. I really hope they fix their machines and make a little effort to try to make this place as lovely as it used to be.

Winchester City Council (WCC) is known for its helpful and polite employees who are dedicated to their jobs. While some may not always receive the desired response, it's important to note that all communications are heard and considered. Certain issues such as paying for garden waste or parking outside one's house may not be directly related to WCC. The council is also praised for its prompt service, as seen in a recent repair appointment where a plumber arrived on time and efficiently completed the job.
Winchester City Council housings staff have been fantastic in helping myself down sized from a house to a bungalow. Although I had a few minor problems. The housings staff were great helping resolve them very quickly . Fantastic .

Called about a situation where we had recently moved into their jurisdiction and we had a lot of extra refuse beyond what could fit in the bins as a result, that we needed picked up. This was all due to unpacking and included unrecyclable waste such a bubble wrap etc It seemed like a totally normal and understandable situation, and not our fault. They not only refused to help but were impatient and blocking and curt in their response and tone. They were just trying to rudely get rid of me as soon as possible instead of letting me politely ask questions, often interrupting.
Ibad R — Google review
The sooner companies realise (including WCC) that these stupid apps are not working and get back to real people on the phones, doing their job, the better! Endless attempts to renew a waste bin online just leads to 'freezing' and no result with wasted time on the consumer's part!! Very frustrating.
Eileen S — Google review
In correspondence with someone in the parking department. I have been sent rude and condescending emails in response to my challenge of a PCN. The emails have not improved during correspondence and I am left feeling incredibly frustrated as there is no one to talk to. Having followed the guidelines for the free parking I was disgusted to receive a PCN and followed the appropriate channels to have it revoked. Sadly I received an email that clearly implied that they can do what they want and there is nothing that can be done because of their greed and apparent superiority. The manner on which I have been treated is utterly disgusting and anyone who works for this council should hide in shame because it has proven to be an inconvenience and not at all helpful in any situation. I called the office and was talked over the entire time by a rude woman who refused to help. When I requested a manager to talk to as I was fed up with being talked over, I was told there were none in today. I'm fairly certain this was a lie as it is the standard response of companies who do wrong and want to avoid doing anything to right the situation. Do not let them take any of your money. Greedy, rude, disrespectful, condescending and useless!

I have always spoken to helpful and polite employees who are doing their job! I haven’t always received the response I have hoped for, but this doesn’t mean I haven’t been heard and considered in my communications with them. I might not like to pay for my garden waste, I might not like to pay for parking outside my own house, but this isn’t a WCC issue.

Awful from the start, now refusing to do any further work for our disabled child as my husband asked a contractor to move off the drive, until we had started the school run ( they arrived 20minutes early) blocked us in. Advised us they would return later but after 3 hours of chasing they never did. Then I receive a letter accusing us of using abusive language thankfully my ring doorbell captured everything. I’ve had problems ever since I complained about a fire door they fitted ( that has failed all testing) but not rectified, water dripping through the ceiling after they fitted a shower (again not rectified) also the council team not following procedure and allowing us to get our own quotes and choose a contractor. I would love to know what the grant is now being spent on. Hopefully after they view the video they will see our side but I’m doubtful. Looks like a lengthy fight to get everything resolved. Oh how I love spending my days off wasting my time leaving messages.
Jo A — Google review
Yesterday they moved my garden waste bin into the middle of my entrance thus blocking my drive but did not empty it. I could not report it before 12:00 today so I am supposed to wait another 2 weeks before any action is taken. That means no action will be taken! Bear in mind that due to Christmas & New Year, it is 4 weeks since the last collection. Will I be recompensed for this lack of contracted service? I doubt it! The plodders who gravitate into employment in the sleepy hollows of WCC do not care or understand the concept of customer service but they will have employment for as long as they want and a gold plated pension when they don't want! And we pay for it, through the nose!!!

Kingsgate is a historic site in Winchester, featuring one of the two remaining gateways from the city's original ancient walls. It is believed to have been constructed in the 12th century, possibly as a modification of a Roman gate. The small 13th-century church of St. Swithun-upon-Kingsgate, an uncommon example of a "gateway church" integrated into medieval city walls, can be found on the upper level.
Beautifull location near the Winchester Cathedral. Surrounded by the cathedral property walls, and numerous other historic buildings. Tired centre, needs bringing into the 21st century. The centre needs to be fully occupied. 2 stars awarded in 2018. December 2019. Since the refurbishment the centre has improved Calendar club shop is seasonal, and usually close in most centres in January. New look shop looks as though it will possibly close in the near future. Then there will be two vacant shops. The shopping centre has been refurbished, the former open entrances are now able to be closed. The cleanliness has now vastly improved as the roosting pigeons no longer have access to the upper level ( non shopping ) . New shops have been added, TKMAX for example are already trading with others to follow. When fully open may merit 4 stars.

Went for my birthday as I love animals! The last time I went was when I was a young child. This was my first trip, and we visited as a large group but split up in to small groups. Tickets were pre-purchased in advance, which made entry quick and easy. There was plenty of car parking available. Staff I saw were friendly & helpful. Despite low expectations set by friends, I found this place to be fantastic. The animals appeared well cared for, and we managed to see all the ones we hoped to—and more. There are lots of picnic spots and climbing areas for children, which made it very family-friendly. Food and gift shop items were reasonably priced. The only downside was that it was a hot day and all the drinks we bought from the cafe there were warm due to broken fridges—an issue we were told has been ongoing. While this didn’t ruin our experience, it did feel like a waste of money. I’d recommend bringing your own picnic and would definitely visit again.

Hannah T — Google review
While I truly appreciated the creativity and effort that went into the Mesmerica show which the planetarium kindly hosted, I found it difficult to fully relax and enjoy it due to audience members seated behind me who were eating and drinking throughout the entire performance. The rustling of crisp packets, popcorn, and drink lids was very distracting, and it made it hard to immerse myself in what was otherwise a stunning one-hour show. I was so disappointed this happened to us as we spent a lot of money to take time to see the show and was very much looking forward seeing it. It was clear that the noise also disturbed other audience members, but no one wanted to make a fuss or challenge them, so the distractions continued throughout. We kept glancing over with annoyed expressions, but unfortunately, it didn’t resolve the issue. I spoke with staff at the venue, and I understand that it is normally allowed to eat and drink during the show. However, given how immersive and quiet this particular performance was, I felt that allowing eating and drinking during the show was not ideal for the audience experience. I don’t blame the venue staff — they were only following company policy — but it’s a real shame that this was allowed during such a sensory show. I contacted the company afterwards, but the reply felt like a generic template rather than a sincere apology or explanation. With clearer audience guidance and a more personal response to feedback, this could have been a truly amazing experience. As I would like to return to see another show.

Wonderful time here. My kids aged 10 and 8 absolutely loved it. So much to look at and get stuck into. They particularly liked the space section downstairs. The show is worth the extra £4 . Exciting and educational for everyone and has the wow factor. Car park is free which is really good, felt the tickets were a little on the high side but still enjoyed the experience and would visit again

Lovely staff very helpful. We had a disabled adult in the party. There were no car paking spaces available for his wheelchair. Have to say the food hall and toilets are dirty and not a pleasant place to eat. Most of the interactive displays did not work. The only saving grace was the Planatorium show.

First visit last night to see Mesmerica. An Audio/Visual treat. We will be returning to see a Pink Floyd event or similar. I'm also keen on general Astromony.
Joe M — Google review
It's an expensive day out and it was merely "OK". A lot of learning machines were too text heavy, and fundamentally not that interesting if you got down to the meaning of it. So what age are they for? Too simple for older kids and too text heavy for younger kids. I went here about 10 years ago and there were better fixtures back then. Quite a few didn't work properly also. Planetarium was decent.
Robert B — Google review
This is an exciting, fun place for children to visit to explore science. I liked the fact that the decor and theme revolve around both physical sciences and space travel. The shows are well curated and informative. Grown ups enjoy them as well. The planetarium is conducive for learning. Although the projection is from the giant ceiling, you get a feeling of looking into the sky without the drag of straining the neck. The bookstore stocks books and toys. The centre is constantly cleaned even with the huge footfall. Parking is massive but paid for. There is an Inn on the property as well for people who have to travel long distances to Winchester. Overall, it was a great experience.

Fantastic place - we visit every year and the kids do not get bored. The team are all extremely enthusiastic and full of energy which is great at getting the kids engaged in learning. The exhibits are tonnes of fun as well as educational. You can easily spend an entire day at the centre - we always turn up by 10am and find ourselves leaving no earlier than 3:30-4:30pm Couldn’t recommend a visit enough!

Wolvesey Castle, also known as the Old Bishop's Palace, is a remarkable 12th-century structure that served as the residence of the bishops of Winchester. This monumental site, completed by Henry de Blois, was once a luxurious palace and one of the greatest medieval buildings in England. The bishops of Winchester held significant power in both the English church and national politics during medieval times. The castle ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into its original architecture and historical significance.
Beautiful old castle, so impressive. And the history behind it , unbelievable. It does worth a visit so much to see and admire. Winchester is a beautiful town and has so much to offer.
Cristina S — Google review
It was free first of all and it was also accessible as we had a push chair. We walk around town and we follow a route to the ruins of the Castle
Blanca R — Google review
A very interesting piece of history which is only a few minutes walk from the cathedral and in fact is located right next to the current estate of the Bishop. Sadly as with time, parts of the site has now been secured off due to natural deterioration. But if you love history, I would suggest paying a quick visit to the ruins, the boards arounds the site can give you a good idea of what it was once like.

At each step in you are more amazed by the stone works inside. It’s a lovely distraction, a quiet and peaceful place by the river shore.. and st no charge at all! Well worth the visit

Free entry.

The Royal Green Jackets Museum is a museum that exhibits uniforms, weapons and other memorabilia from the Napoleonic Wars, World War I and World War II. It is located in Winchester, England and is one of the best museums in the Regiment of England.
This is a gem of a museum. Lots to see and learn from for all ages of the family. I was very pleasantly surprised at how much my seven year old (who has a short attention span at the best of times) enjoyed it and how interested he was in the displays. The lady on reception was lovely and very welcoming. Highly recommended and will be back again soon hopefully.

The Riflemans Museum, located in the Peninsula Barracks in Winchester, is a fantastic little museum spread across two floors, complete with a stair lift for accessibility. We were amazed by the vast number of exhibits on display. The staff were very welcoming and informative, enhancing our experience. A standout feature is the extensive display dedicated to the Battle of Waterloo. This enormous display case, which is truly astonishing in scale, features approximately 20,000 soldiers and 9,000 horses. While the overall presentation is impressive, a closer look reveals countless intricate details and smaller scenes within the larger tableau. Additionally, a narrated light show occurs every 10 minutes, providing valuable insights into the diorama and the battle it represents. If you're a fan of the Sharpe novels, this museum is a must-visit. There is also a stunning collection of medals, which serve as a remarkable testament to military history. As someone joked, “blokes don’t do bling.” Overall, the museum is fascinating and set in a beautiful area. I would recommend it to anyone visiting Winchester, and it’s definitely worth the trip for anyone with an interest in the Napoleonic era.
Wayne R — Google review
We drove down to visit today, I love a regimental museum and this one was great. It's interesting to see the history and glory of it all. So many conflicts fought, so many deaths, so many medals issued; 59 Victoria Crosses here amongst the many others. This is well worth your time, just watching the battle of Waterloo diarama explain the battle was outstanding. I recommend attending and supporting all this history. The staff were very friendly and there is a lot of information spread across two floors. There is a stair lift to give access to the first floor, for those that need it.
Wild S — Google review
We visited this museum on Saturday afternoon, expecting to go on to the Gurkha museum and others in the complex. We actually spent 3 hours in the RGJ Museum and that was with skimming over the post WW1 sections. What an amazing museum, so well done and so much to see and read. The dioramas were excellent, particularly the Waterloo one which was huge and gave a real scale of the conflict as well as some lovely personal details. For me the most interesting section was the Victorian era colonial wars with minor conflicts seemingly all over the globe, one after the other. A fabulous museum and worth visiting Winchester for on its own.
Marcus H — Google review
Loved this museum. If you have an interest in the regiment, the Waterloo period or of course the Sharpe novels then this museum is fantastic. From the Napoleonic to the modern period there is much to see here with an outstanding interactive model of Waterloo

Very interesting museum on two floors, with a stair lift. Lots of history to see. But the best bit is the display of the battle of Waterloo. Huge display case bigger than my living room with thousands of little figurines. The battle is explained with lighting and narration and is done very well.

Brilliant museum! Goes into fantastic detail and exhibits so many historic uniforms, medals, trophies and weapons. There's also a fantastic diorama of the battle of Waterloo upstairs that lights up and takes you through the sequence of the entire battle. Juniper Leisure offers an exciting tank driving experience where visitors can drive a variety of tracked vehicles, including a Chieftain battle tank, an Armoured Personnel Carrier, and a Stormer Missile Carrier. The team at Juniper is described as enthusiastic and creates a great team feel, from the canteen to the activity leaders.
If Carlsberg did days out, then this would be the one. Brilliantly well organised and run event, from pre event comms, to the on the day running. Great friendly staff, who went out of their way to ensure everyone was happy and involved throughout. Free tea, coffee, cake, biscuits and juice throughout the day and tasty rolls available to buy as well. One of the best days out my Son and I have ever had. Would throughly recommend.

What a fantastic experience my wife had driving 4 different types of tracked vehicles, She's always wanted to drive a tank and she got the opportunity to drive a Stormer High Velocity Missile Carrier, a 432 Armoured Personnel Carrier, an Abbot Self-Propelled Howitzer, and a Chieftain Main Battle Tank, all 55 tons of it. To be honest she drove them better than her car 🤣. I would highly recommend Juniper Leisure as the experience is top notch, the staff are friendly and attentive and they make sure everyone is safe and has a great time. My wife and I travelled 5hrs for her to have the experience and it was worth every penny to see the beaming smile on her face. It was just a shame I couldn't drive them too but that's what I get for being a big guy as I don't fit in the driver's seat. Make sure you check the size requirements before you book. Big thanks to Juniper Leisure for a great experience, I got lots of brownie points built up with the wife 🤣. PS. The homemade cake was lovely 😁.

What a great day, juniper leisure was certainly worth the 3 hour drive, I'd do it again tomorrow. Driving 4 types of tanks and learning how to precisely control them, even changing gears was so much fun. The staff were all very welcoming and happy to answer all my questions. It was a very well organised day with something to do all the time, free tea, coffee and cakes and a small menu of hot sandwiches to buy which were very nice! I can't say enough nice things about my day at Juniper Leisure. I recommend everyone to give them a try if you fancy a day of tanking fun!

We bought this for my mum for her 60th and had a really great morning out! My mum really enjoyed driving the tanks and we also had the chance to ride on a couple ourselves whilst we were waiting. All very well organised and there were refreshments (really nice cake) included in our spectator cost. Highly recommend for a big pressie!

Had an absolute blast driving some serious kit - MBT, Abbot Self-Propelled Gun, Stormer, and an APC. All ticked off the list. One word: amazing. And yes… the tea and cake were definitely up there with the highlights!

We have just returned home from a fabulous day tank driving. The whole set up is perfect, plenty of places to sit, facilities that are clean, free tea, coffee, water, squash & cake/biscuits. The instructors are excellent - really clear in their guidance and are very friendly with good humour. I felt safe in every tank and was a bit nervous to begin with, but they all put me at ease. All in all, they clearly know what they are doing, the operation was smoothly ran with friendly staff wherever you turned. At the end of the day you even got a certificate to take home. There was even cooking apples we could take home from the farm… that’s tomorrow’s crumble sorted! What’s not to love, thank you so much for an excellent day.

The Buttercross Monument, also known as the City Cross or High Cross, is a stunning 15th-century pinnacled market cross located in Winchester. This historic monument features an octagonal base and a pillar adorned with carved faces of renowned figures. It served as a focal point for farmer's markets and is part of the city's rich medieval tradition. Visitors can admire its intricate design and learn about its significance as a boundary marker of political power.
The High Street of Winchester is worth to visit. You can find many beautiful little shops and old buildings on it as well as monuments.

A monument waiting for you patiently by the side of the street. Located at the heart of the main street. Its beauty is ruined by the surrounding buildings, seemingly ready to engulf it. Well there is a bench just on the opposite side of the street for one to admire the beauty of the monument, standing tall in a busy street amidst the main market.
Parinita A — Google review
The Winchester Buttercross is a good example of Early Medieval tradition of High Crosses. Used as boundary marker of a significant territory and political power. There are twelve figures on the statue. You can't miss it in the middle of the busy High Street. You will be amazed how tall it is. A plaquette with a brief explanations can be found on the nearby building.

14th century place but renovated in past couple of times. Nice place to stroll around. Many people were siting there n their lunch bites or tea, coffee. Wanna read about its history n get more pics but don’t wanna disturb the people. Btw it’s worth to visit if u around in high street.
Win T — Google review
Right in the heart of Winchester’s High Street stands the Buttercross, a spiky Gothic beauty from the early 15th century, originally used as a medieval market stall — think Waitrose, but with more saints and fewer loyalty cards. Restored in 1865 by Victorian architect G.G. Scott (who couldn’t resist a bit of tinkering), the monument features twelve statues, including saints, bishops, and even King Alfred the Great, who seems to pop up everywhere in Winchester like a royal photobomber. Its name? Traders once sold butter, eggs, and cheese from its steps. In 1770, a local squire tried to nick it for his estate, but the good people of Winchester weren’t having it—they staged a mini-riot and saved their beloved cross. That’s civic pride with a side of cheddar..

I rarely ever review churches, because I don't like reviewing something that many consider sacred. However, I feel the need to comment on this tiny church, which was such a spectacularly quiet and peaceful place in such an unusual location. It was wonderfully quaint, set in a very unusual setting for a church (being over the gate). Take a moment to enjoy the quiet here, and take a look at the awesome stained glass window too, which at our time of visiting was illuminated beautifully by the sun.

A great place for a walk on such a sunny, February day. The perfect antidote to the longest January ever! We managed to park on Sunday around 10.45am but any later and I think we would have struggled as by the time we left there were cars everywhere. The walk from the car park to the Hill Fort was mostly flat, but very muddy in places. We did the circular route which was much hillier on the way back but easy enough. We managed to see all the way to Chichester Harbour.

We have just returned from a brilliant bank holiday open day at Twyford Waterworks. This is one for all ages, backgrounds, families etc. The volunteers here and staff have done a really good job of organising, displaying and describing the steam engines, boilers and pumps. It is amazing to see them all working and so lovingly looked after, preserved and cared for. There is a wonderful nature trail, complete with a large pond where the younger children (and adults) were thoroughly enjoying pond dipping and learning about all of the wildlife and plants at the site, plus a play area and a wooden bird hide, overlooking the pond where you can look out for all the birds in the area. In addition, there is a lovely outdoor seating area at the back, with cover over half of it where we had a delicious slice of cake and tea and we also enjoyed the barbecue food on offer. There's a small gift shop, for those that wish to take home a souvenir from the day or a trinket/toy, plus clean toilets and a marquee where you could buy second-hand books etc. and we also purchased a guide with all of the information and history of Twyford Waterworks. The parking is free and plenty of it; again, well organised with friendly volunteers showing you where to go on arrival and, for those that wish to take public transport on the open days, there is a vintage bus service running from Winchester town centre that drops you off, right outside. For motor enthusiasts, there were also a few vintage cars and bikes on show, plus 2 large steam engines. A brilliant day out and we will be returning again!.
L G — Google review
If you're into industrial history then you'll love this place. There were various different pumping engines being demonstrated and free guided tours of the works (once you've paid to get in). They sometimes have various displays outside as well. The event I went to had a display of classic cars. I believe the October open day will feature various steam machinery.
Steven L — Google review
Well worth a visit. We took part in the guided tour. Apart from the museum with working engines and machines, there is a lovely walk and cafe. Lovely staff who want you to enjoy your visit. You do need to be mobile to make the most if it, and the ground is uneven in a few places. But we will definitely be back.

A piece of history - an Edwardian Water Pumping Station, associated lime kilns and quarry. Of special interest to steam enthusiasts. Came many years ago and it was interesting, however, on s return visit l was blown away with the improvements and how much was now open/ working. The staff were so friendly and the cafe was a welcome stop - yummy burger and scrumptious cake !! A fantastic day out and well worth a visit !!!

It's only open for.a few days each year so be sure to check out the next open day and add to your calendar. You'll have a surprisingly good visit, we found that there was an excellent trail sheet for the children, lots of good information on the way round to explain each part of the water pumping and softening process. There were many volunteers on hand to share their knowledge and experiences whilst the machines were running mostly on steam power as it would have in the Edwardian period. Everyone was friendly and helpful, there was a bbq on in addition to the cafe, both providing great value and fairly quick service considering it was a busy day.

This small museum tells the incredible story of the Hussars Regiments who seem to have been involved in every armed conflict in the last 300 years. The displays are well described through information panels. We went on the day when the museum was free as part of the Heritage Open Day, but it would also have been well worth paying for the visit.

A great museum gives an real insight into the life of a cavalry soldier when the horse ruled the battlefield. Great museum detailing the formation of the Light Cavalry (Huzzars)and subsequent history. Includes details of the Charge of the Light Brigade through to the formation of the Armoured Divisions.

This is a little gem of a museum, full to the brim of historical artefacts and information. It forms part of a military history museum centre, sharing a building with the Gurkhas museum. If you are ever in the vicinity I highly recommend a visit, you won't be disappointed.

Really enjoyed the open day. Full of interesting history. Huge shoutout to Richard and Angel

A fantastic regimental museum in the heart of the old Peninsula Barracks. Some great artefacts from Waterloo, the charge of the light brigade all the way through to the present.

Nestled in the heart of Winchester, the Royal Hampshire Regiment Museum is a captivating destination for history enthusiasts and families alike. This charming museum chronicles the rich legacy of the County infantry regiment, affectionately known as "the Tigers," from its inception in 1702 to its merger with the Queens Regiment in 1992. Visitors can explore exhibits that highlight significant events tied to Hampshire's role within the British Empire, all while being guided by knowledgeable volunteers—many of whom are veterans themselves.
Excellent, a fantastic museum - small but beautiful! Very friendly staff and the exhibits very well presented and obviously well cared for. Highly recommended.

Excellent museum and tribute to the regiment. Good displays and explanation, by era, of the regiment’s activity and campaigns. Well maintained artifacts. Nice memorial garden in front of the building. Friendly staff. We spent 20-30 minutes, but could take 60-90 if you were to read/view every item/description.

A fantastic regimental museum which concisely covers the history of the Royal Hampshire Regiment. Split over two packed rooms the exhibits and information is accessible and interesting without being overbearing. It’s also a free museum to visit. Well done to the Hampshires!

My great grandad was in the Royal Hampshire regiment so I thought I’d give this a visit. A small, quaint and unassuming museum but packed full of history. From musket balls to machine guns to medals and much more, the museum tells the tale of the regiment and their extensive history especially over the two world wars. Anyone with interest in military history, anybody whose family served in the regiment or anyone with a spare 30 minutes should check this out. Free entry, can’t go wrong. They deserve every penny in donations though. Real treasure.

A very small museum telling and showing the history of the Royal Hampshire Regiment from its time as the Hampshire Militia, through the two World Wars up to amalgamation with the Queen's Regiment to become the PWRR. Very informative, and it's also free entry.

Visited here recently. Free entry, which is great but of course leaving a donation is an option. I have no connections with Hampshire but I still found the items fascinating, especially the World War Two stuff and the Palestine artefacts. As a friend of Bill I had a special interest in going there, just have a word with the staff if that is your reason for visiting. Like other places in Winchester, the staff here were very hospitable and knowledgeable, making the visit a memorable one. Five stars.

Great museum with a good selection of interesting exhibits. FREE entry.

A fantastic museum covering the history of the Royal Hampshire Regiment from The Battle of Minden through to amalgamation in 1992. The exhibits on display are fascinating with good interpretation to help the visitor understand the relevance of the object. There are several extremely life-like figures of Hampshire soldiers through the ages. There is so much to see here that each time I return I spot something new. The staff are very welcoming and happy to answer any questions. I would recommend this museum.
