Catholic church
Nestled in the heart of Tavira, the Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo is a stunning church that dates back to the 13th century. Originally built over a former mosque, this architectural gem showcases an intriguing blend of styles, including Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical elements. After sustaining damage from the devastating earthquake of 1755, it underwent significant restoration while still preserving its original Gothic portal and several chapels adorned with Manueline details.
Worth a visit. Beutiful scenery and visit to the Bell tower. There is a museum which tells the history of the church.
H K — Google review
Nice church with good views from the bell tower. A small entrance fee applies.
David S — Google review
The church on the top of the hill is very nice, but it needed important restoration works! With the ticket you can visit the church and go to the tower bell.
Michel C — Google review
lovely church currently undergoing renovation €3 Admission includes church, museum and Bell Tower, well worth the price and a visit
Geoff H — Google review
Nice little church with a possibility to walk into a bell tower and enjoy quite beautiful view of the city

A big thank you to Miguel for making our visit an unforgettable memory! So kind of you to give us your knowledge and precious time.
Rudolf S — Google review
Major work being undertaken that prevents you really looking at the best parts. Didn't change entrance to reflect this. Very disappointing
David H — Google review
Handy little stop to get in out of the sun and see a little bit of the old religious history of Tavira. Very well priced at €2.50 per person and the view from the bell tower of the city is worth climbing up the stairs for -:)

When exploring the city, a visit to Igreja da Misericórdia is a must. This Renaissance church, constructed between 1541 and 1551, is considered the most significant Renaissance building in Algarve. Its majestic portal and exquisite interior with 18th-century blue and white tiles make it a captivating sight for culture and architecture enthusiasts. Adjacent to the church is Galeria Palace, which hosts various exhibitions.
I highly recommend making a stop at this lovely church in the heart of Tavera. It is small, but the tile work inside, depicting various scenes from biblical stories, are phenomenal. Equally, the high alter is elaborate and elegant. You can climb the small, 33 stairs to the bell tower for broader views of the town. It is easy, but be mindful that the steps are narrow.
Clinton F — Google review
We went for the Fado concert. No idea what the lady was singing but she had an incredible voice and the guitarists were pretty darn good.
Michael S — Google review
In the heart of Tavira, the 16th-century Igreja da Misericórdia is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. Its elegant façade and magnificent interior, decorated with blue-and-white azulejos depicting scenes of charity, make it one of the Algarve’s most beautiful churches — truly not to be missed.
Pedro C — Google review
Thus was a lovely contemplative, calming stop in Tavira. They have an art exhibition currently featuring a contemporary Portuguese artist and older statues concerning Saint Joseph and his role as father. Of course the main highlight is inside the church with the Portuguese tale of depictions of the virtues etc. no bathroom available FYI. There’s also no holiday program or music etc. unfortunately. But I did enjoyed the little tour I think it was two euros, I didn’t go to the top of the belltower. The gold leaf at the altar was really stunning.
Patrick P — Google review
Beautiful old church with rich decoration. Typical blue-white tiles on the walls and a large golden altar piece. Really impressive and definitely worth a visit. There are some steps to take so quite probably not accessible for wheelchairs.
Sarah J — Google review
Small church with gorgeous walls. Definitely worth to see and the tickets are really cheap. There's possibility to go to the bell tower, or just walk in the church and museum. Museum is just one room, filled with few artefacts. But definitely worth the prize. Basic ticket is 2 euros. Bell tower option is 3 euros

The Camera Obscura, also known as Tavira EYE, is a must-visit attraction located in the Tower of Tavira. Offering 360-degree views of the city from 100 feet above sea level, it provides a unique perspective of Tavira.
Wow this place is superb! Such an incredible creation. Clive is a gem! What an engaging and informative talk and guide to Tavira. Definitely worth doing when you first arrive to know whats in the area, but interesting and so incredible at anytime.
Joy C — Google review
Short visit, but worth it. An old water reservoir converted into a place where you can see a projected telescopic image of Tavira real time. Like a "live google earth" where you can see the city, the cars traveling and people walking.
João V — Google review
A new experience that we really enjoyed. €5 for each adult and it lasted about 20 minutes. The guide was very informative and witty. It was good that a lift was also available as there were quite a lot of stairs. I loved the views we were shown and it gave us ideas of where to visit in Tavira.
Debs M — Google review
This was one of the highlights of our trip to Portugal. It is a great way to get a tour of the town of Tavira without even breaking a sweat. You can tell that the owner really has fun with it. I laughed my head off and learned a lot about the town. My husband and I still talk about it months later!
Meaghan B — Google review
A Portal to the Past: A Critique of Tavira's Camera Obscura In the heart of Tavira’s evocative old water tower, where echoes of history mingle with the golden Algarve light, stands one of Portugal’s most curious treasures: the Camera Obscura. At once a scientific instrument, a theatrical performance, and a poetic meditation on time, this device transforms the simple act of observation into an unforgettable experience. More than a tourist attraction, Tavira’s Camera Obscura is a philosophical lens through which the city is both reimagined and rediscovered. Using an ingenious Victorian-era optical system—essentially a periscope with mirrors and lenses—it projects a real-time panorama of the surrounding town onto a large concave screen in a darkened room. The result is almost alchemical: a living map of Tavira, unfolding in moving light and shadow. The guide—essential to the experience—is not merely a narrator, but a conductor of sight. With wit and precision, they sweep the lens across tiled roofs, Roman bridges, Baroque churches, and the languid flow of the Gilão River, as if painting with sunlight. Every movement of the mirror is choreographed with care, turning the projection into a cinematic performance. What elevates the Camera Obscura of Tavira beyond novelty is its balance between simplicity and spectacle. Unlike digital screens or drones, this analog marvel engages the viewer's imagination. It slows time. It forces you to see not just what is there, but how it is there—alive, delicate, and temporary. In an age obsessed with high-definition immediacy, the Camera Obscura offers something richer: a contemplative, immersive connection to place. And what a place Tavira is. The camera’s gentle sweep over the town's ancient streets reveals layers of Portuguese, Moorish, and Roman influence. It becomes clear: this is not merely a view of Tavira, but of its soul. In a world where technology often distances us from the physical and the tactile, Tavira’s Camera Obscura invites us back into the act of seeing. It is a reminder that photography, in its purest form, began not with the click of a shutter, but with light and shadow dancing in a darkened room. Verdict: An essential experience for any visitor to the Algarve—poetic, playful, and profoundly moving. The Camera Obscura of Tavira is not just a way of seeing the city; it’s a way of feeling it.

Fantastic visit made 10 times better by the English host with a great sense of humour, unlike the humourless Hooson family (see review below) who are probably the type who clap at jokes, unable to raise a titter. BTW a theatrical aside to the owner, i asked on the return train, there were indeed 2 security, their "Samurai swords" were in fact umbrellas with a distinctive Samurai handle, scared the Bejeebus it of me. Thank you for a wonderful fascinating visit. X
Nick B — Google review
Totally ruined by the host who is the worst type of English bore ever the sort you swerve immediately on holidays due to their inability to recognise that they need to constantly be the centre of attention with their stupid ‘oh look at how funny I am’ bantering. Left after 5 minutes as I could not stand his inane moronic jokes and stupid commentary which he obviously thinks is ‘splendid’ but is quite the opposite. Real shame as I wanted to enjoy this but this guy was soooo irritatingly awful, had to leave. I shudder to think of other people being subjected to this.
Hooson F — Google review
Absolutely awesome place and experience. Particularly that, there are not many of these in the world. Camera obscura Tavira is located in the old water tower. The show lasts ca.15 min. During this time you can see live in Tivara in real time due to simply (but magic) optical device. You can see buildings, people, cars, flying birds and sometimes flamingo wading in water. The guide, British, is amazing man. He is great speaker, his enthusiasm is very uncommon today. Ticket price: 5 €/adult person (children, seniors have discount). Time: ca. 15 min/show

Public beach
Praia da Ilha de Tavira is a popular sand bar offering ocean swims and beachfront cafes serving delicious seafood. The small town of Tavira, crossed by the Gilao river, has become a tourist hotspot with an array of restaurants, terraces, music festivals, and fairs. Visitors can enjoy the picturesque Roman bridge reflected in the river and explore the Mercado da Ribeira for dining and shopping experiences.
5☆ beach with excellent food and drink facilities. Accessed by local ferry in Tavira or at Quatro Aguas, you then walk across the island to reach the Atlantic coast line and some the most beautiful stretch of white sandy beach in Europe. Being the Atlantic, the water is quite cool, but very clean. Loads of Spaniards travel over at the weekends to come to this beach, even though there are several beach areas just over the border - that's how good it is!
Remy C — Google review
Has many restaurants along the walkway to the beach, but the prices are higher than Tavira, plenty of gazebos for rent on the beach, you can catch the local ferry from the boardwalk in tavira ( 1.50 one way 2.60€ return) beach can get busy during tourist season, try walking along the beach to the train (1.15hr) then catch the bus back into town
Rob — Google review
An amazing beach well worth the visit. The ferry from the town leaves every half hour, takes about 15 mins and it cost €2.20 return. Plenty of restaurants and bars on the island. Nicest restaurant is Ferreira , best toasted sandwich you'll ever taste.
Noelle M — Google review
Get the ferry out to here, book the beach club loungers, enjoy the sun, nap and have lunch! Very relaxing, no hassle and very, very clean 👌 Lovely visit, we will be back on Saturday!!!
Scottieboyuk — Google review
This beach was absolutely stunning — powdery white sand, crystal-clear water, and a relaxed, inviting vibe. There were plenty of sunbeds available to rent at very reasonable prices, which made it easy to spend the whole day soaking up the sun in comfort. Everything about this spot was perfect. We loved every minute of it. 10 out of 10 — a must-visit if you’re in the area!
Dave E — Google review
Beautiful beach and easy to get to by ferry. We were there at the beginning of September so the ferry passed by every 20-30 mins approximately. Cheap and short ride to go there and back. Beach wasn’t too crowded when we went. There are many places to stop by for food or drink and if you want a bit more quietness you can walk further out to where there is less bars.
Carla Y — Google review
A beach of yellow sand stretching for 11 kilometers, and the cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean. What more could one possibly need...
אלון א — Google review
Beautiful beach which was reasonably quiet when we visited out of season with a few cafes and bars still open. It's an easy boat trip from Tavira and then a short walk to the beach on the other side. Plenty of opportunities for bird spotting and nature walks if you don't want to swim or sunbathe. Sunbeds are available for a reasonable fee. Safe gently sloping beach with beautiful soft sand. Great place to spend a sunny day with the last boat off the island highlighted on the jetty to ensure no one misses it. There can be big queues for the return trip so give yourself plenty of time to get back from the beach. Definitely worth a visit.

Lookouts
Castelo de Tavira is a picturesque 11th-century castle with stunning views of the town and surrounding park from its ancient battlement walls. The fortress offers panoramic vistas of Tavira's terracotta rooftops, the meandering Gilao river, and the distant ocean. With remnants dating back to Phoenician times and extensive reconstruction during the Portuguese Reconquest, this Moorish castle is one of Europe's oldest.
A really lovely, free public garden within the walls of the historic castle. The best views over the town to the river can be achieved from the garden level but it's nice to climb the historic walls. Well worth a visit.
David K — Google review
Interesting from the outside. There’s a basic archaeological museum inside, and you can climb the towers. A small entrance fee applies.
David S — Google review
The castle is free to enter and offers good views over Tavira. The steps are steep and those less able may struggle to get to the top of the walls / towers. The gardens are also very pretty and well maintained, and accessible to all. We visited relatively early on a weekday, and it was fairly quiet.
Simon S — Google review
This was a nice stop on our way from Lagos to Sevilla. Easy / free access, nice views of the town. Be ready for some uneven stairs. Adjacent church charges a 3-4€ entry but be sure to only ascend to the bell tower after they’ve been rung!

Very nice place to visit. Laid back and free! It was nice to climb the ramparts and take in the views across the city. Interesting gardens and arboretum - with info on trees and plants. Would say this is a must do item to visit whilst in Tavira.

All that is left of the castle is the ruins of parts the walls and a couple of turrets, but it is well taken care of and you can climb the steps if the walls to get good views of Tavira. There is also a very pleasant garden in the center which is nicely shaded in the summer heat. Free to enter.

The Gilão River flows through the heart of Tavira, offering a picturesque setting for leisurely strolls along its wide sidewalks and promenades. The river is lined with charming colorful houses and traditional fishing boats, creating a postcard-worthy scene. Several bridges, including the elegant Ponta Romana dating back to Roman times, connect both sides of the town over the Gilão River.
A tale of two cities…? One side of the river lined with luxurious houses; the other side with buildings whose paint on the wall are peeling off, half-abandoned, the perfect rendezvous for rebelling teenagers in the town of Tavira.

The Islamic Museum in Tavira offers a captivating insight into the town's Islamic heritage. Housed in a modern structure that incorporates ancient ruins, the museum provides a fascinating glimpse into Tavira's history during the Islamic era. Visitors can explore displays, films, and recovered artifacts showcasing the influence of the Moors on the town. The museum is small but intriguing, making it a worthwhile stop for history enthusiasts.
The museum showcases artifacts of Al-Andulus era of Portugal during muslim rule. It was a very interesting visit as were given catalogues and there was a projector screen there too.

Small museum. Interesting but the signage is only in Portuguese. The friendly agent did lend us a book with English translations, but it was tedious trying to read small print while viewing the artifacts. And the English translation was not very good for most of the items. It is very reasonably priced - one Euro for seniors. Location good too - right in the main plaza.

Worth the 2 euros. After all, Muslims built most everything of note in Iberia. Nothing in English so pick up the guide at front desk.

This is a lovely little museum, built around the remains of some of the original muslim structures of the town. The custodian was excellent, helpful and polite. The first and second floors contained various artifacts discovered during excavations in the town. These were interesting to look at but both they and the information boards weren't in English so there was a lot of guess work involved! There was a good film with the story of Tavira and the remaining Muslim heritage of the town which did have English subtitles though.

Restaurant
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Tavira, Restaurante O Tonel offers a delightful culinary experience that beautifully showcases contemporary Portuguese cuisine. Located on the picturesque Rua Dr. Augusto da Silva Carvalho, this charming eatery is not just about great food; it’s also an inviting atmosphere enhanced by local street artists performing nearby. Diners can indulge in generous portions at reasonable prices, with standout dishes like steak on a stone that allows you to cook your meat to perfection right at your table.
Very high quality food. Obviously a very talented chef. Quality ingredients. High quality service and great value for money. The oysters were incredible. So pleased we tried this restaurant but do recommend booking!

Hands-down one of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had – not just in Portugal, but in all of Europe. We were so blown away by this restaurant that we went twice in the three nights we spent in Tavira. Every dish was exceptional. The octopus was to die for – cooked to absolute perfection, tender and flavorful, quite possibly the best we’ve had in Europe. The seabass was equally outstanding. We also tried the oysters, which were out of this world – bursting with freshness and topped with the most delicate mix of spices and caviar. The goat cheese and beet salad was fresh and delicious, and the octopus appetizer, served in a sizzling clay pot, was next-level good. For dessert, the lemon meringue pie and chocolate mousse were the perfect sweet ending to what was easily the best meal we’ve had in Portugal – and one of our top three in Europe. We even asked to speak to the chef to share our compliments – he was incredibly warm and generous, and treated us to a complimentary glass of port. Pro tip: make a reservation. This place was packed every night – and for good reason. An absolute must-visit when in Tavira! And kudos to the serving staff, they were attentive and kind.

Food is excellent. Would recommend making a reservation regardless of night/time of year—we made a reservation the night before for a Tuesday night in November at 6:30 pm. I doubted the reservation would be necessary at that time/day/season but soon after we were seated we saw several people without reservations turned away and the restaurant soon after was completely filled. We had a great time.

O Tonel was a show-stopper! We brought a friend visiting from Germany and may have accidentally ruined all future meals for him. Honestly? Worth it. We started with the tuna tartare with avocado, mango, and homemade grape jelly... almost too pretty to eat. As someone who does not typically order/eat fish, I was shocked at how much I loved it. Pro tip: mix it well before eating so the homemade jelly works its magic through every bite. 😉 Mains were exceptional across the board: 🐙 Octopus on roasted sweet potato with sweet peppers and olives - tender and full of flavor. 🐖 Crispy Pork Belly with pear purée and orange + star anise sauce - crispy, rich, perfectly balanced. 🧀 Goat Cheese Puff Pastry with pumpkin jam, salad, yogurt dressing, and seeds - a beautiful mix of sweet, savory, and crunchy. We inisited that we were too full dessert... then promptly ordered the Pear Tart with vanilla ice cream and port wine sauce on our server's recommendation. Zero regrets. Inviting atmosphere, thoughtful service, creative and delicious food. Make a reservation. Come hungry. Mix the tartar. Order the pear tart. Thank me later. 😉

The restaurant is on the prettiest street in Town. Was it as good as I expected after reading all the glowing reviews? Definitely not. The service is amazing, the atmosphere too but the food has not lived up to my expectations. I had cod papilotte, tuna tar tar and a pear tart for desert. Everything was good but not five stars kind of good. There is better food in town in my opinion and you don’t have to book those places a day in advance.
Marina K — Google review
We had dinner here while visiting Tavira, and really enjoyed the outdoor dining vibe — lively, yet cozy. The oysters were absolutely fresh and paired beautifully with salmon roe. Definitely the highlight of the evening. I had heard that Tavira is famous for its octopus, so I came with high expectations. Unfortunately, the dish here was disappointing — the texture lacked the bite and bounce I’ve enjoyed in other parts of Spain and the Mediterranean. Overall, still a restaurant I’d consider returning to, especially for the atmosphere and starters — but next time I’d be more selective with the mains.

Fabulous dining experience in the heart of Tavira. Every dish was exceptional. The seabass and lamb shank were outstanding. We also tried the oysters, which were incredible. Very fresh and topped with the most delicate mix of seasoning and caviar ~ just lovely. Desserts, waitstaff and atmosphere was perfection (we chose to dine outside). Ensure a reservation to avoid disappointment.

Fado restaurant
Fado com História is a small production company located near the Misericordia Church in Tavira, Portugal. Visitors can experience live Fado music performances that tell the story of Portuguese music accompanied by the traditional Portuguese guitar. The show is presented in multiple languages, making it accessible to a diverse audience. Guests have praised the beautiful old church setting and the passionate performances, which offer an opportunity to immerse oneself in Portuguese culture through music, regardless of language barriers.
Hearing a Fado performance in Portugal is an absolute must. This performance is unique as it’s in a church at 5pm or a smaller room later on. The musicians are phenomenal and play their instruments beautifully. The singers voice belted out the fado songs and she didn’t really need the mic. In fact I would have preferred it without the speaker as it took away from her singing. You miss a little bit of her feeling from the song with a mic. They gave a brief description of each song which you won’t get at a typical dinner performance in Alfama. Excellent experience but I would suggest they adjust the sound system or go without it in the church set up. The acoustics from the church would be good enough.
Jennifer H — Google review
Amazing performance in the church. Great singer and guitar players. I also enjoyed the stories about fado and without saying goes also the decoration of the church.

This fado takes place in a church. The singer and guitarists were amazing. If you want to experience some fado this is definitely the place to go.

Incredible experience in an intimate venue, a church with great acoustics. The fadista as well as the guitar and viola players’ performance was absolutely divine. The 3 performers made this session a great, Portuguese experience. A must to attend.
Naomy M — Google review
We listened to beautiful music in church for 45 minutes. The two guitarists and the singer were amazing. Our first exposure to fado, and we want to listen again! The guitarist described each song in both languages and made us feel welcome, also the singer included us in the songs. Beautiful!
Tanya307 — Google review
Such a great experience! The girl who was singing was probably the best singer I’ve ever seen in my life - permanent goosebumps! Small and intimate setting and a great mix of music and history. Can’t wait to see more fado in the future.

Must see! Brilliant blend of Fado history overview and beautifully performed live music.
Mila V — Google review
Awesome taster for Fado music in all its glory. Starts off with a short docu feature and has a few renditions of Fado. We were lucky today to have one of the top Fado singers of Portugal. Very intimate size of the audience with just a Portuguese 12 string guitar and an acoustic one, no microphones! Was managed very well with nice informative introductions to each song. If around Tavira, don’t miss it!

Praia de Cabanas, also known as Ilha de Cabanas-Mar or simply Cabanas Beach, is a serene and expansive 7-kilometer stretch of unspoiled white sand. Accessible by a short water taxi from the boardwalk of Cabanas, this beach offers tranquility and relaxation for sunbathers. The island has its own amenities including a cafe-bar, showers, toilet facilities, and options to rent sunshades.
I recommend São Tomé The island offers stunning natural beauty, including lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and unique wildlife. It's relatively untouched by mass tourism, making it a peaceful place for relaxation and exploration. However, infrastructure can be underdeveloped, and the language barrier (Portuguese) may pose challenges for some visitors. The local culture is warm and laid-back, but don't expect luxury amenities everywhere. Great for eco-tourists and those looking for an authentic, low-key adventure. I didn’t just travel there without detailed information, all thanks to the author Leo Russo for the São Tomé and principe, your book I purchase on Amazon make my journey within São Tomé and principe smooth, fun and memorable

A really good clean beach, can get busy in the summer months, especially at the weekends. However we went on the first boat over at 8am (I know, so early!) And it was empty on a Saturday morning, took breakfast with us, perfect! Also you must have the chocolate bolas 🤤

Beautiful, less touristy beach on a small island just off the mainland. There are several ferry services with the one we chose costing 1.50€ return. You pay to rent the sunbeds and parasols, for May it was 15€ for two people and it goes up in the summer months to around 22.50€. The whole area is gorgeous and much less crowded than other parts of the Algarve, we got the tip to come from a local and happy we did try it out. Good restaurants in the area as well. Would love to have stayed longer.
Joe L — Google review
We had a fantastic day at the beach, we went outside of UK school holidays, and on a week day so there wasn’t many people on the beach, but to hire four sun beds with two umbrellas was under €40 which wasn’t too bad. There is a part of the beach where you don’t have to hire sun beds as well. We had a good day and it’s about a 5 minute walk from the boat pier with raised walk ways and wooden walk ways on the beach. Whilst it didn’t effect me, if you have mobility issues it maybe a bit difficult as there is steps up and down.
Matt D — Google review
Nice beach you need to take a taxi boat which cost us €3 return for two people. You can rent the sun bed with an umbrella if you want. We got our own with us. There’s only one bathroom there.

Nestled in the charming town of Tavira, Restaurante Artefact is a delightful culinary gem that emphasizes quality and freshness. The restaurant's elegant yet inviting ambiance creates a perfect backdrop for enjoying an array of tapas and contemporary Portuguese cuisine, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.
It is always a pleasure to acknowledge excellence. We had lunch here on the 22nd of March to celebrate my wife’s birthday. We had such a warm welcome and the cuisine, as always, was outstanding. There is an excellent choice of wines. The atmosphere is delightful. Be sure to book well in advance. Had others adhered to this sensible advice the small minority of negative remarks might have been avoided!

We booked here for my partner’s birthday. We felt so welcome from the moment we arrived. The service and food are impeccable - my partner said it was the best lamb shank he’s ever had. Thank you for such an enjoyable evening 😊
Bilbow3 — Google review
We passed this charming little spot on a wander around town, and enquired about booking in. We were able to get an outside table for a few days later, as the inside tables book up far ahead of time. If you are heading to Tavira, book now! We each had a starter and a main course, mine was the Flambéed prawns, served with a finely chopped salad and baguette slices with butter. This was an extremely flavourful dish, especially with the French bread to swipe up all of the sauce. The only drawback was that such a finely chopped salad is a bit difficult to eat, especially with the small cutlery provided for the first course. A small, but leafy salad would be preferable. The beef carpaccio was nicely seasoned, and of course very tender. The chopped salad was easier to eat alongside the soft beef and crispy croutons. The Duck confit with Cherry sauce and frites was really excellent. The house made salty frites were perfect! The vegetable side of peas was ok, but lacked the sweetness of fresh peas that one would expect. Altogether a fine dish though. The Turbot Meunière was cooked to perfection, and the cauliflower and leek gratin suited it very well as a side dish. The potato choice of the potato/sweet potato/celeriac mash was not as pleasing, and I would have preferred a plain pomme purée, or even the frites. Perhaps simply too many strong flavours together on one plate. I generally prefer main courses to be determined by the chef who understands best what will be the most pleasing components together, as opposed to a “choose your own” menu. Or even a little guidance from the servers who are familiar with the dishes? Perhaps it is easier this way instead of diners asking for substitutions. Overall, this is not a criticism, I do look forward to returning again to this delightful dining establishment with very high standards of customer care. Next time we will leave a little room to try a dessert!

We were recommended this lovely little restaurant. Evening tables were fully booked for the foreseeable, so we had lunch instead. The food was great. Confit duck and confit lamb shank with our choice of sides (the potato, celery and sweet potato puree was fantastic!) Followed by lemon tart/ice cream/raspberries, and almond tart, flamed with cointreau, and lemon sorbet. With a bottle of red and a coffee each, it was reasonably priced too. We have already booked for next week.

This charming eatery specializes in Algarvian tapas, with octopus reigning supreme on the menu. The restaurant's colorful and quirky ambiance sets the stage for an unforgettable dining experience filled with bold flavors and beautifully presented dishes.
The food is excellent. The Octopus is done to perfection (although it has too much oil to my liking). The Tuna tartar is fresh and a good portion. The Gayozas are nothing special at all. All in all the food and the service is great.

A fantastic dining experience at Ti Maria! We had the tuna tartar, steak, octopus, and bruschetta - and every dish was as good as the next. Beautifully presented, packed with flavour, and clearly made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. The desserts were equally impressive - the orange cake, in particular, was a standout. The service was warm, friendly, and attentive throughout. We would absolutely recommend Ti Maria and will definitely be back!

We stopped in Tavira looking for a place to grab a bite to eat and stumbled upon Ti Maria. We were seated in a really cool room covered in wine corks, and right away the atmosphere stood out. The food was exceptional and honestly exceeded my expectations. Easily one of the best, if not the best, lunches we had during our two-week trip through Portugal. The white sangria was delicious and super refreshing, and every dish we ordered was full of flavor. We started with the octopus tempura, which came with a sauce that paired perfectly. Then we had the fresh tuna tartare with slivered almonds and what tasted like a light miso or teriyaki-style sauce that was so fresh and flavorful. Finally, we shared the half order of ribs, served over these big potato slices that were somewhere between a wedge and a chip. The ribs were tender and fell right off the bone. By the end we were stuffed but so happy we stopped in. Great atmosphere, great service, and incredible food. If you’re in Tavira, Ti Maria is a must.
Jonathan A — Google review
Disappointing experience despite decent food We visited Ti Maria late in the evening as most other places had closed — and unfortunately, that’s the only reason we remained there. While the food was tasty, it was overpriced, and the overall experience left a bad impression. The person who appeared to be the manager (not wearing the same uniform as the other waiters) was abrupt, dismissive, and made us feel completely unwelcome. The service was slow, especially just to take our order, and there was a noticeable push to upsell and maximise spending, clearly targeting tourists. It felt like we were part of a transaction, not guests at a restaurant. Sadly, the atmosphere and attitude overshadowed the food. We wouldn’t recommend this place unless you have no other option — as was the case for us.
Maria A — Google review
I gave the atmosphere a four star because I’ve unusually given 2 other 5 stars in Tavira this trip, but actually it was 5 star across the board and so I changed it. Like the looks of the place, staff was very friendly. Answered our questions and provided recommendations. I had the wild boar cheeks which came with mashed potatoes. The cheeks soft and tender maybe a bit too much salt the mashed potatoes a bit gummy. ( this is not the first time I experienced this, almost seems they use a blender to break it down instead of by hand or a whip cream mixer) We had the cod with cornflour. Fish was good, skin could have been crispier. Cornflour lacked seasoning but the bacon helped. The vegetables with romesco sauce, again a bit salty and broccoli slightly overcooked. Romesco was good. Overall food is ok! If the chef would make some minor adjustments the food would definitely be a home run! The staff definitely makes this place very pleasant! Again some will appreciate the food and a few like myself will find points of criticism and analyze the food. I like salt but in this case it was a bit more than needed. Desert also ok, had more whip cream Nutella flavored with hazelnut pieces than ice cream.

A gorgeous little bakery we visited a few times in the morning whilst on holiday. A fantastic array of bread, pastries and cakes. Wonderful, friendly French owner, and a friendly cat too! Nicely decorated, bookshelves of books to borrow and quick service!

Had brunch here today. The bacon quiche was really good: the vegetable quiche was amazing (loved the addition of hazelnuts), accompanied by a generous pot of fresh green tea. And to finish it off, the best patisserie I have had. Looks sweet but is just right: melts in the mouth yet the flavour lasts. Merci beaucoup!

Very popular place. Most customers were French - like being on the Left Bank. Had a coffee and a delicious almond and chocolate pastry. If I wasn't about to leave Tavira, I would return for breakfast again

Amazing french bakery in Portugal. We ate a breakfast of coffee and chocolatine and decided to buy quiche and a croq monsieur for lunch. Oh and dont forget the brioche for tomorrow! Oo La La!

Terrific customer service from the French family who runs this bakery. Their croissants literally just melt in the mouth and an treat on any day. Prices are so very nominal and be sure to come early to snag the fresh pastries. We came here couple of times during our stay for relaxed lounging for breakfast.

One of the best bakeries in Algarve, and I think the best French bakery in the region as well. It opens early morning at 7 a.m. and closes in the afternoon and Tuesday it’s off. they bake with love and perfection. Thanks to the work team, and great gratitude to the young man at the cashier for his help and kindness to everyone…

Yikes, this place has good reviews but if you are French, or are familiar with real French quality, you will near spit out anything you eat from this ‘patisserie’. Everything we bought tasted like it was made from the cheapest ingredients, long shelf life egg powder, artificial flavors, etc. Certainly will not return.

A lovely little French bakery, with tasty cinnamon rolls, quiche and very good orange juice. A lovely stop on the way to the train station on our last day.

Market
Mercado Municipal de Tavira is a bustling marketplace offering an array of fresh produce, seafood, meats, spices, and local crafts. The daily market showcases the vibrant Portuguese daily life and offers great bargains on various goods. On weekends, the outdoor area features antiques, artisan designs, clothing, and more. Visitors can explore wide aisles filled with an impressive variety of local products including fish, fruits, vegetables, spices, honey and salt.
A great experience for anyone who loves fresh vegetables and meat. It's also a great way to support the local community. There's a flea market outside on Saturdays, and there are more vendors inside than on weekdays. Regardless, no matter the day, you'll always find delicious and fresh ingredients.
E W — Google review
Easy parking at this colorful fish and produce market. This is the place to come to find fairly priced local Portuguese Fleur de Sel. Don't do what I did and buy it from the first stand when the bags don't have a price tag. While still much less than in other shops in town, you can find the best prices near the center of the market. Also a great place to find organic local olive oil, and many honey products.

During my recent visit to Tavira, I popped into the local indoor municipal market, and every large Portuguese town has a council run food market. The market is a short walk 🚶‍♂️ from Tavira train 🚆 station. There are cafes outside and public toilets 🚻 too. There is a good selection of fresh vegetables and seafood and butchers too. If you like fresh fish 🐟 you'll love this market. There was a nice breeze blowing through the market when I was there. It's definitely worth a visit when in Tavira.

It is great market hall where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruits, fish. Pricess are not high at all, just check the open hours. There is big car park around and small shopsvto habe coffee, pastel de nata, fish restaurant, etc. Do not miss the local taste!

A busy and vibrant market where all kinds of products are available. The fruit and vegetables all look very fresh as does the fish and meats.
Alasdair A — Google review
Very quiet inside, but enough stalls to get some nice fruit, veg, fish and meat. All really good quality too. The spices and chillies were a bit on the expensive side, but a really nice display of local produce. Around the outside of the market are many other shops and bars, all worth a wander round too, and maybe a drink or 2 too😁

If I lived in this area I would be a regular at this market. It has a fantastic selection of fresh fish, fresh meats, basic vegetables and some surprises like an amazing selection of ground spices, chillies and dried beans from around the world. I highly recommend going early in the day. On the Saturday we went there was also a flea market adjacent to the market.

Golf course
Benamor Golf is a renowned golf course located in the Eastern Algarve, offering stunning views of the Serra do Caldeirao mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. The course features a unique design with water coming into play on eleven of its eighteen holes, creating a challenging layout with par-4s, par-3s, and par-5s.
As a relatively new golf player I booked a 9 hole on course lesson with the pro Miguel while on holiday. At €100 it was outstanding value for the experience gained and the vast knowledge of the game, its rules and many, many tips. It also included a warm up on the driving range and the use of Miguel’s golf buggy. Many thanks Miguel, I’ll see you again in February when I’m next over in Portugal. 🙌🏻⛳️
Simon — Google review
My father in law and I played here last week and we were really impressed with the course. For a golf course there were challenging holes, not a lot of water hazards at all but lots of bunkers around greens which was a test of our skills. We played in June and the course was in great condition and we were outside of school holidays so not sure what it would be like at peak times. We tee’d off at 8:24 and the way they do it at Benamor is a four ball and they may allocate other people to play with you, so we had a Norwegian gentleman join us for the round which was great. We hired a set of clubs which required a cash deposit of €50, please remember to bring this otherwise they will ask you to use the ATM outside and you may have to pay a fee. If you bring back all 10 clubs and the bag you get the deposit money back. I don’t mind saying this but for two people playing 18 holes with a buggy was €320. It’s not cheap but we had a great experience and a lovely round. if you check out the Benamor Golf website and book in advance you can get a cheaper rate with out a buggy etc. I’d happily play here again if we return in the future.

Benamor Golf Course truly delivered an amazing golfing experience during our week-long stay in the Faro District! We were fortunate enough to play three rounds, and each time, the course proved to be an absolute joy. It's incredibly well-designed, offering a perfect challenge and enjoyable play for golfers of all skill levels – from beginners honing their swing to seasoned pros looking for a strategic game. Our group comprised a mix of a 4-ball and two 3-balls, and without exception, everyone had a brilliant time. The course conditions were excellent, the greens were true, and the stunning scenery only added to the enjoyment. Benamor Golf Course is undoubtedly a must-play in the Loulé area and comes with our highest recommendation. We can't wait to return!
Stuart J — Google review
Had an excellent 9 holes play/lesson on this course, taught by Miguel. Miguel is a smart, calm and competent instructor. Very chill guy and a pleasure to spend a couple of hours playing and chatting about my game and golf. He massively improved my chipping game. The course is absolutely stunning too, highly recommend. Overall a top experience.
Chris B — Google review
Nice course, in good condition, but short. Had to hire clubs, but they only had 10 in the hire set and seemed to be very old (when checking the bag initially a few were even bent out of shape).
Neil C — Google review
Very short and simple course so depends what you are after. If your a high handicapp player 20 and over and struggle with distance it would be good for you but not for me. Also groups in front were sooo slow 🐌 and didn't let anyone through which is probably because course attracts people who don't know what they are doing and should be quicker and if not let others through. Still if your a high handicapper and struggle with the good courses like Ombria, Monti Rei etc then worth a look but if your decent player <16 handicapp I'd give it a miss.
Martin H — Google review
Came here while staying in Tavira, wanted to play a round of golf with a friend. We’re about to tee off and staff accuses us of not having balls and taking them from the driving range. Then proceeded to question us and demand a handicap certificate from our home club which we didn’t have of course since we’re half way across the planet and then kicked us off the course. Extremely condescending attitude and made us feel stupid for just wanting to play a round of golf. Steer clear.

Santa Lucia Lounge Bar is a top-rated spot in Tavira, located on the left bank of the Gilao River. It offers a family-friendly atmosphere with live music and an outdoor promenade. The bar hosts local musicians and provides an authentic Portuguese experience. The interior has a romantic ambiance with dim lighting, while the exterior is perfect for people-watching. Visitors can enjoy a variety of drinks and tapas at reasonable prices, but it's important to note that only cash is accepted.
The staff were extremely friendly and the prices were reasonable. Loved the smash burger and the fish and chips. A little hard to get a table. No reservations. Came early. No card. Bring Euros.

To clarify previous reviews, this is no longer a Sports Bar, but one of the best bars in Tavira for atmosphere, if you go with a crowd or just pop in on your own. Many reviews complain about no card payments — fair enough, but that’s something a customer should check before ordering (we did). What really makes this place shine are the two simple cocktails, priced like gold, served with the charm and manners of a tourist trap. The waitresses pushed for the order like it was a competition, and when paying, the bald guy (presumably the owner) found it funny to mock us to his friends — the kind of attitude you’d expect from street junkies showing off. Five stars, because zero isn’t an option.

Grat place to meet up with friends, have an ice cream or just to watch the world go by. However, getting to the Parca is a different matter. For reasons best known to the Local Authority, every road / footpath has been dug up! Why you would allow every road / footpath to be dug up at the same time with holiday season approaching? Absolutely crazy. Persons with mobility issues will struggle, wheel chair users simply will not mange. If you think I'm making a mountain out of a molehill please see my pictures... unbelievable.

Cascata do Pego do Inferno is a hidden gem in Tavira, recommended by locals for its picturesque waterfall and small lake. The hike down to the site is challenging but worth it for the breathtaking natural beauty. Visitors are advised to wear good gripping shoes and be prepared for walking and swimming in this piece of paradise. The pond with a cascade of water offers a unique experience, where some brave individuals even jump off rocks into the water.
Absolutely beautiful right now (middle of April). Park at the nearby parking lot (with the same name to the northwest), then follow the road to a trail . When in doubt, stick to the right. Some reviews complain about a very steep path…that’s a shortcut. If you’re staring down a cliff above the laguna, go either way instead for an easy path.
Dennis — Google review
There is free parking on the road and a 0.5km trail to reach the lake. The trail is not signposted, so it can be a little confusing to follow. It’s also a bit steep in a couple of short sections. The waterfall was dry, but the pool looked very attractive for swimming. Sadly, the edges of the lake are badly overgrown with bamboo plants and there is not much room to sit. Would be great if the bamboo could all be cut back and removed.
Paul B — Google review
Like this place is breathtaking and magical, also love the fact It is kinda secret. However, the fact the locals are going there to bath not only themselves, but also their dogs and the smell there is kinda weird is making this place great to look, but would not recommend to swim there, but if you dont mind that aspect than the jump from the rope or from cliff feels surreal. Amazing place

So worth it!! We read the conflicting reviews and almost didn't go - the Waterfall & small Lake are picturesque. Parking is close but the hike down is very challenging - I slipped & fell on my backside, but was so happy we made the hike & saw this amazing bit if nature - Tavira never disappoints. Go if you have good gripping shoes & be prepared to walk & swim in this piece of paradise. We had the unique pleasure of cheering on two rock jumpers as well, another once in a lifetime experience!

There is free parking available. Approximately 10minutes of walk on a narrow, dirt path. Can be challenging to find and reach with little kids. Igreja de Santiago is a historic whitewashed church in Tavira, dating back to 1270 and rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. The plain exterior contrasts with its rich interior, featuring art from the 15th and 16th centuries brought from other churches and convents. Situated near Tavira Castle, it offers a serene atmosphere and an opportunity to explore the bell tower for panoramic views.
It’s one of those beautiful Portuguese churches that give the feeling of the focus and love that has been shared there for so many years. We went to hear a friend in a choir and after 40 minutes of pipe organ music bailed. Everyone seem to be enjoying it But as a musician, I think the pipe organ might’ve come from the 17th century and hasn’t been completely upgraded or tuned for the last 150 years because it just was difficult to listen to.

Praia do Barril is a charming beach located near the historic town of Tavira in the eastern Algarve region of Portugal. This family-friendly destination offers long stretches of white sand, calm and clear waters perfect for swimming, and picturesque dunes. The area's rich fishing history is reflected in the old tuna-boat anchors that adorn the beach and the converted fishermen's cottages that now house cafes and restaurants.
Amazing beach. Clear water and suitable for all ages. Water was fantastic and warm. Early June. Bodyguards are available on the beach. White soft sand, sand ocean floor and very clean. Park at the road. And you have to walk around 300/400meter to get the train to take you for the rest of the way. Walking is around 1.1km to the beach. Lovely walk and paved. There are couple of bars, restaurants. Public toilets, single shower booth inside male's WC, 1euro for a minute/or two for warm water. Highly recommend..
Darkwing318 — Google review
You can catch the train to the beach or walk there. It's aprox. a 20min walk with plenty of shade! I would say the price and waiting time for the train isn't worth an every-day trip - I would, however, recommend catching the train for a cute experience. There are multiple parking spots along the riverside, but I recommend going early in the morning, before 10am, to get a parking spot near the beginning of the trail. The bars and restaurants in the beach are very affordable, considering their lication! The bathrooms are super clean, always with a cleaning lady. Regarding wheelchair accessibility, there is a part in the train for wheelchair users. Although the wooden track to the beach may be hard, there is a water wheelchair, that let's you enjoy the sea as well!
Matilde R — Google review
Loved this beach! The sea was quite clear and you also have the opportunity to get a little train that takes you to the beach instead of walking the pathway. The anchors are definitely immpressive giving the whole beach a unique character. We were in Tavira and just took an uber to Santa Luzia for under €10. The train ride was €2 to go or €4 with return - however on our return there was such a massive crowd that we decided to just walk and it was very lovely so I recommend trying both:)

One of the most beautiful beaches in Algarve. You can reach it by foot ( 20 min walk from the entrance) or by 'chuchu' train (4 € round trip). By the beach a restaurant, great ice cream, wc'c and showers, and on the beach ⛱️ areas, priced by 1 or 1/2 day stay, areas for people with their own ⛱️ and waste, white sand beach left and right. Life guards watch over you. No dogs allowed. Along the path pass the swamp area you will find benches to rest on. And great eco posters on local fauna and flora, as well as ocean protection.

Xiri Beach Bar is a stunning spot with plenty of room for everyone. You can rent sunbeds for a good deal, as the money can be used towards food and drinks at the bar. The beach shack offers generous and tasty toasties, cold draught beer, and reasonably priced items like Sagres beer and ice cream. The staff is welcoming and friendly, providing amazing service. It's considered the best spot to hang out on Tavira Island with fantastic drinks and snacks.
Peace of heaven. This place is magical. People are really nice, the food and drinks are very good, you can chose healthy and local options. The spot is amazing, the Sunsets parties great, we can’t never get tired of Xiri ! I feel like I’m in a California beach, much more better (Portugal rules) 💛🌞🌊

Looks great, trying hard to get the beach club look with lots of uniformed young staff who for some odd reason just ignore you; despite the queues! The manager is glued to his phone but blanks your attempts to attract attention. Could be great but needs much better management and training.

This a great, friendly place, with some really good food and a terrific view point on the the wonderful beach. While away a few hours with a gin and some friends 🧡 Most enjoyable and highly recommended 👌 Back on Saturday for more of the same. Nice!

Spent the whole day here with a group of friends. Music was very quiet could have had a speaker closer to the front row. Had table service on the beach sunbeds we rented for 16 euros during the day but found it hard to get waiters attention. Would benefit from having a QR system to order food/ drinks from. Cash only to pay for the sunbed!

The best octopus I’ve ever had—and I’m a real fan. Everything was excellent. Service was outstanding, with everyone kind and quick. Beautiful background music, lovely décor, and an unbeatable location. I had read many comments about unpleasant service, but that was not my experience at all. Perhaps it helped that my boyfriend, although French, made the effort to say a sentence in Portuguese? A little note for tourists there. As for prices, yes, they are higher than the average restaurant in Portugal, but two things should be kept in mind: this is an island, where logistics are more complex, and the gastronomic level is truly high. If you want to pay regular Portugal prices, then a beach shack with sardines and paper tablecloths will probably be a better fit.
Verónica R — Google review
Service was exemplary, could not of asked for better service, served in good time, always with a smile. Staff were helpful and fantastic. Plus the best spot on tavira island

This place is great - food, service and atmosphere! We visited multiple times on our trip, would recommend the tuna tacos and white wine sangria.

AVOID THIS PLACE! Don’t be fooled by the aesthetic! If I could give zero stars I would. My partner and I had the poke bowl it was sooooo gross. 🤮 the avocado was frozen, and the mushy quinoa was in a puddle of water in the bottom of the bowl it was honestly so disgusting. When I told the waiter that the food was still frozen he just shrugged as if it wasn’t his problem. Don’t be fooled by the nice aesthetic!

Ermida de São Sebastião is a charming church located in the Santiago area, just in front of the library. Dating back to around 1723, it underwent reconstruction several decades later. The architecture of this building is quite remarkable and the interior art is equally impressive. Visitors have described it as a beautiful monument with peaceful surroundings and ample space. Some have even attended music concerts held at this quaint church, appreciating its simple beauty and lovely wooden panel interior.
Historical church, which is still in use, so be mindful if you are site seeing and locals stop in to pray. The attendant was very pleasant. The paintings are very detailed and have historical significance. This lovely church offers small musical concerts. If you are in the area, it's a nice way to be supportive of the community.

Charming art gallery with a lovely lady who was informative but gave us space to explore. Some wonderful pieces by a range of artists. Worth a look for sure!

Whilst visitingTavira, we stopped at Tavira d'Artes, caught up by a beautiful painting created by Karen d'Oliveira. This place is inspiring, you can find many artists and very different vibrant styles. The lady Fatima who was there has been so welcoming and showed us around the gallery. We ended up buying an amazing painting that has been shipped all the way from Portugal to France where we live. The shipment has been smooth and efficient. Everything has been handled professionally, the painting has been cautiously packed and arrived safely, on due time. I can only strongly recommend any visitor in Tavira to take a look at the gallery, just for pleasure or for indulging yourselves. It was a pleasure dealing with Fatima and Karen. Thank you again.

Wonderful place to have a picnic ( we took some apples & carrots for the friendly deer) There’s a lookout tower with far reaching views and walking trails. There’s also a children’s playground, toilets and a BBQ area. Not open all year. We thought it was closed as the large gates were shut but there’s a small gate to the right that you open by sliding the lock.

Museum
A most informative museum summarizing the history of photography and its impact on tourism, journalism, and historical documentation. This is an impressive collection of photographs dating back to when the Andrade family established themselves in Tavira, Portugal. Their business was photography and their praiseworthy photographs, spanning generations, resulted in a wonderful visual record of events (social, political, cultural, catastrophic…). The manner in which the photographs have been grouped and chronologically sequenced in their display cases accompanied by detailed descriptions in both Portuguese and English, leads the visitor toward a clear understanding of not only the impact photography has had throughout history, but also the extent to which the Andrade family business has succeeded in recording the visual changes over time of this eastern city in the Algarve. Well worth the five euros entrance fee for both photography aficionados and history buffs. Not to be missed! And if you’re lucky, you’ll be greeted by a descendant of the dedicated Andrade family member who started it all.
LaMayra F — Google review
A must see in Tavira! I don't think there's anything alike anywhere in Europe. This exhibition remarkably illustrates not only the development of Photography through different eras and by the example of the Andrade family, but also provides deep insight into how the work of the Andrade family is intwoven with the history of Tavira. The exhibits, cameras and works displayed are chosen so carefully and arranged so artisanal - its just beyond me how much time and effort it must have taken to prepare such an exhibition PLUS the hundreds of pages thick photo book and the booklet for a passers-by like me. This is a true life's work not only for the family but also for the town of Tavira and the Algarve region. Thank you for your time and the talk, Miguel! All the best for you!

Igreja de São José do Hospital do Espírito Santo is a fascinating exhibition space that showcases the history of one of Portugal's earliest hospitals. The building boasts a beautiful facade, adding to its allure and historical significance.
The Church of São José do Hospital was part of the Espirito Santo Hospital in Tavira. Now it is a museum dedicated to the first hospital in Tavira. It shows the history of healthcare. Interesting stuff. Admissikon is 3 Euros.

The original church was built in the 15th century. Destroyed by earthquake in 1775. In my opinion, the Igreja de São José do Hospital do Espírito Santo represents late gothic with baroque elements. A.D 1768 (18th century) is visible on the front facade of the church. This date can confirm the style as baroque. Church Igreja de São José was served as a hospital church. It was the Royal Espírito Santo Hospital. I visited Igreja de São José in November 2013. I recommend a visit.
