The Cathedral of Saint-Sacerdos at Sarlat is a must-see for visitors to the charming town. This architectural gem, dating back to the 9th century and featuring a blend of Roman and Gothic styles, offers a glimpse into the rich history of Sarlat. Adjacent to the cathedral stands the ancient Lantern of the Dead, a circular stone tower with an intriguing legend attached to it.
A beautiful church in the middle of the town. A bit noisy during Market day.
Tin N — Google review
A magnificent building which holds the title of co-cathedral of the Diocese of Périgueux and Sarlat. It was listed as a historical monument in 1840. The sanctuary is dedicated to Saint Sacerdos. There are two saints named Sacerdos in France, but the cathedral's patronage refers to Sacerdos of Limoges, whose relics were received by the cathedral in the Middle Ages. The relics disappeared during the Wars of Religion. The Diocese of Sarlat was created in 1317, along with several other Catholic dioceses in the Aquitaine region, following the victory of the French royal forces over the Albigensian Cathar armies. Pope John XXII, former Bishop of Cahors, appointed the abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Sacerdos as the new bishop of the city. Thus, the former Romanesque abbey church became the cathedral of the diocese. Reconstruction began in 1504, and Bishop Armand de Gontaud-Biron entrusted Master Builder Pierre Esclache with the task of building a new cathedral, initially carried out under the orders of Master Mason Blaise Bernard. Work was intermittent due to lack of funds, wars, and epidemics. It was not completed until the 1680s. The vaults were built from 1682 to 1685, under the episcopate of François III de Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon, Fénelon's uncle and godfather, tutor to the Dauphin, and Archbishop of Cambrai. The diocese was abolished during the Concordat of 1801, and its territory was incorporated into the Diocese of Périgueux. Although reusing certain Romanesque parts of the old abbey church, the general style of the cathedral is Gothic of Nordic inspiration (presence of two side aisles). The Romanesque bell tower dates from the 12th century and is the oldest part of the building. It succeeded a Carolingian construction and underwent changes: the top floor dates from the 17th century and the bulbous belfry from the 18th century.

Such a beautiful cathedral. It is a fantastic example of a Romanesque 12th century Abbey. It has wonderful vaulted ceilings and lovely altarpiece lead light windows. It has a beautiful swallows nest organ. Worth a visit.

Medieval building with high ceiling and beautiful stained-glass windows, what’s not to like about it... Such historical town with a nice cathedral (was once a cathedral) to boast. Constructions for this place started since the 14th century, however, it was not completed until the 17th century. This town is a must visit.

Fortress
Château de Beynac is a massive medieval fortress situated on a cliff by the riverside in Dordogne. The region offers a blend of rural France's charm, featuring delightful cuisine, fine wine, and a romantic medieval heritage. Visitors can explore scenic rivers, serene valleys, and enchanting forests for a tranquil retreat from modern life.
Great medieval castle with stunning views and no crowds. Fascinating history and well-preserved architecture make it worth visiting. Important tip: Skip the lower parking and go straight to the upper lot (same price). The walk up from below is very steep and challenging - those with mobility issues should definitely use the top parking. The upper lot saves you a difficult climb and gets you right to the entrance. Highly recommend for history lovers looking for an authentic castle experience without the tourist masses.

The video explaining the architecture of Château de Beynac was excellent. The accompanying app provided an audio guide and the narrative about Queen Eleanor and her son, King Henry, enriching the experience. The view from the top is absolutely breathtaking, offering a unique perspective reminiscent of the monarchy, where you feel as if you’re overlooking the entire land, inspiring a sense of responsibility to protect it. From this vantage point, you can also see the nearby Castelnaud-la-Chapelle Castle. The entrance fee is quite reasonable, making this visit even more worthwhile. Highly recommend!

Château de Beynac is stunning—basically the Beyoncé of castles. The views will wreck you (in a good way), and the stairs will leave you breathless along with the view. Worth it. Also, the castle was basically for a woman who had two husbands bc she could. Iconic

The most amazing Château we have been to yet! Well worth the trip, just make sure you park up top and not on river like we did. It's a very steep, but beautiful walk up the path if you want some exercise tho.

One of the most impressive castles in the Périgord. Majestic, its location remains breathtaking and its panorama exceptional. Indeed, this incredible medieval fortress, perched on its golden cliff, overlooks the Dordogne River from over 150 meters above sea level. A true movie set ! A tour of the castle will take you from the 12th-century keep to the majestic Salle des Etats, ending at the top of the Éperon Tower, where you'll overlook the valley just as the Beynac family, to whom the building belonged for nearly 1,000 years, did. From there, the view over the Valley of the Five Castles is superb ! When leaving the castle, we've visit the church, whose stately lodge is open to the public.

What an incredible castle. This ancient castle sits above the Dordogne Valley with an ancient 12th century village on the surrounding hillside. No guides, just enjoy at your own pace. A must see if you are in the area.

Lanternes Des Morts, also known as the Lantern of the Dead, are 12th-century conical towers found in Sarlat, France. These unique structures were traditionally associated with nearby cemeteries and are shrouded in mystery regarding their original purpose. The Lanterne des Morts in Sarlat is a particularly unusual architectural sight, located near Cathedrale St Sacerdos.
Lovely building, unique in France.

(Translated by Google) Set back from the main street, at the back of the cathedral, you discover somewhat by chance this magnificent little building, the "Lantern of the Dead". Shaped like a bullet, it reveals itself to you by chance. Small chapel, it is located not far from a necropolis, located behind the cathedral. Enter, and you will find yourself inside a cocoon... interface between the world here below and the world beyond. A must see, because of its shape, its purpose, and don't forget to read the sign nearby, evoking its history. Exciting ! (Translated by Google) A strange building at the back of the cathedral, set back from the main street but not away from the busy streets, as it offers a view of the cathedral from its landing 😇 We visited it in the cool of nightfall, which gave the stone a magnificent color 😊 Too bad, they'll just have to add a railing, a rope to access it 👍 (Original) Étrange bâtiment à l'arrière de la cathédrale, éloigner de la rue principale mais pas de l'affluence car elle donne une vue de son palier sur la cathédrale 😇 Nous l'avons visiter à la fraîche à la nuit tombé cela rendait à la pierre une couleur magnifique 😊 Dommage, il faudra juste rajouter une rambarde, Cordon pour pouvoir y accéder 👍

Intriguing "monument" which origins date back to the 12th century. The term "lantern of the dead" is a neologism. In the past, other names were used, such as "cemetery lamp" or "fanal". Its origin remains shrouded in mystery, fueling local legends and stories. Designed in limestone typical of the region, this building is distinguished by its slender shape and conical roof. This monument, listed as a historical monument, represents a real enigma. Indeed, while some lanterns were used to mark cemeteries, others had a spiritual or protective function. The location of the Lantern of the Dead, near the old Saint-Sacerdos church and an old Benedictine cemetery of Saint-Benoit, reinforces its close link with medieval religious practices. The use of these lanterns of the dead, widely used in certain regions of France such as Creuse and Puy-de-Dôme, often symbolized a light guiding the souls of the deceased. The Lantern of the Dead of Sarlat is part of this heritage, testifying to the close relationship between spiritual beliefs and funerary architecture. It is interesting to note that similar lanterns of the dead are found in various regions of France, each with its own particularities. Some, such as those found in villages along the Loire River, also served as landmarks for nighttime travelers. Others, further south, towards the Charente River, were often associated with specific funerary rites.

A unique tower behind the Cathedral dedicated to the dead. Well worth to take a look, as it's only a few of these monuments existing in France.

(Translated by Google) A surprising structure that amazes the eye as you pass behind the cathedral. A lantern that illuminates our dead as they pass into the light? No one knows, even if we like to think so. A quiet place where inner peace and spiritual elevation reign for those who know how to listen. July/August is very busy. Free admission. (Original) Surprenante structure qui emerveille le regard quand on passe derrière la cathédrale. Une lenterne qui illuminerait nos morts lors de leurs passages dans la lumière ? Le Presidial à Sarlat offers upscale 1- and 2-bedroom apartments with full kitchens and fireplaces, perfect for a romantic getaway. The restaurant provides a distinguished setting in the quiet old town of Sarlat, offering delicious cuisine and attentive service. With beautiful garden terraces and a formal indoor dining room, the restaurant serves classic Perigord dishes and an interesting selection of Bergerac wines.
What a surprise! This restaurant is absolutely stunning. The outdoor seating is beautiful, and the food is amazing. We went for lunch today, and the three-course menu was outstanding. The foie gras was top quality, and the croustillant de canard was a brilliant reinterpretation of a traditional dish. The tarte aux noix was excellent. I highly recommend this place. Great service too!
Eric L — Google review
Setting beautiful on a garden terrace. Food was however a bit disappointing… starters and foie gras excellent, duck breast with coffee and cardamom was not that special, also the potato mousse with the poultry was average, the poultry was good though. The service was soso as the staff had too many tables per person, so had to wait to catch his attention.
Patisher — Google review
Le Presidial enjoys a beautiful location that makes dining there pleasant. There's something appealing about the setting that creates a nice atmosphere for an evening out. The fact that the place was completely booked when I visited shows it's clearly popular with diners. The food was okay - eatable but with some issues that kept it from being better. The vegetables were noticeably too salty, which detracted from the meal. The meat had good flavor and was well-seasoned, and they got the cooking right (au point), but it was quite chewy - not what you'd expect when paying these prices. It wasn't bad food, just not quite hitting the mark for what they're charging. The staff were friendly and welcoming throughout the evening, which I appreciated. They created a warm atmosphere and made us feel comfortable. However, at this price point, I found myself expecting more polished service touches. Having to pour our own wine felt too casual for what the restaurant financially positions itself as. The wine selection was decent enough, so it wasn't about quality but rather the level of service. Overall, it's an okay place with a beautiful setting and nice staff. The food is decent enough and the location does add to the experience. While I wouldn't say it's exceptional value, it's not terrible either - just somewhere in the middle where everything is fine but nothing stands out as special.

Others must have visited on an off day. We came for lunch and had the €33 menu and 2 glasses of wine. Total cost €77. We found the only waitress serving, friendly and she spoke good English too. We had an amuse bouche of polenta and tomatoes. Foie gras and butternut squash soup for the first course. Couldn't fault it. Main course fish with green curry just and duck confit with reduction. Very good. Desserts were raspberry and coconut cake and the best crème brûlée ever. OK the sunny day and setting in the garden may have clouded our judgement. It actually didn't, it only added to the enjoyment of the meal.

What a wonderful treat this was! We have been in France for the better part of a month and have visited several Boulangeries and Pätisseries, Maison Lissajoux is by far the best eatery of them all. The atmosphere and service are wonderful, and the food is excellent! I had the Avacado toast from the fresh bread made on site by the bread and pastry chefs. The place gives a light, airy atmosphere and a good vibe. I will definitely be back if we return to Sarlat. Merci, John and staff for your wonderful hospitality!
Roleeda S — Google review
Highly recommend. Such a beautiful, calm and quiet setting close enough to the town centre that its super easy to get to. 6 of us ate here and all the food was absolutely delicious and bought out in good time. We had a waiter who spoke English and was so lovely and funny! His great personality was such a positive part of the experience. All food was cooked perfectly and tasted amazing! The quality of all the meat we had was great, the beef just melted in your mouth! It was all presented beautifully and the desserts were really good too. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Sarlat.
Nicola C — Google review
We walked out of another restaurant in Sarlat & decided we wanted a special meal, so this was our choice. We had eaten here 7 years ago & we were hoping it was just as good. We were not disappointed. We sat out on the terrace & had a lovely meal with 3 courses set at 55 euros. The standouts were the duck & the chicken. The cocktail with champagne shot was delicious & the chablis was very smooth. The gourmand dessert with champagne gave you a small taste of 4 desserts. My only criticism is that they could offer a purely vegetarian option on the mains menu. Taking the pork out of the fish dish is not making it vegetarian. We left feeling it had been one of the better meals on our trip.

Jardin des Enfeus is a serene and historic garden located near the cathedral in Sarlat-la-Caneda. This hidden gem was originally an abbey cemetery, featuring tombstones and sarcophagi dating back to the 14th and 16th centuries. The garden offers a peaceful oasis with its winding paths, gardens, and a pond filled with fish. Visitors can also explore the Lantern of the Dead, which provides a unique perspective of the cathedral.

(Translated by Google) Located behind the cathedral, it can be accessed on foot on the left of the latter (signs present but perhaps not very visible). It is an ancient abbey cemetery, interesting for lovers of medieval history, made up of later arcosolium bourgeois tombs (some sculptures and some inscriptions remain) and simple tombstones dated to the 12th-14th century, bearing cruciferous symbols linked to the Templars (according to some ). In summer they are unfortunately covered by the steps of the summer arena! The cemetery is probably connected with the so-called Lantern of the Dead, an enigmatic circular construction from the 13th century which watches over the Garden from the small slope behind it.

Parc Du Plantier, located just a short distance from the medieval center of Sarlat, was once the Abbey gardens and has now been transformed into a charming municipal park. The park features an array of colorful flowers, shady trees, and well-maintained paths that make it easy to navigate. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere with plenty of benches for relaxation. Families with young children can take advantage of the small play area and an attractive bandstand within the park.
There is a nice walk around and through this park which was near enough to where we stayed inside the old town so that we could use it for our daily exercise during the lock-down in spring 2020.

Pretty park lying above and on the outskirts of the old city, within a short walk of the main streets and tourist attractions. A nice place to sit and relax, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. A pretty tree lined path runs along the top of the park to the bandstand and to a small children's play area. There's plenty of shade and benches, although a couple of the beaches are a little rickety. In one corner there are public toilets, but whilst free, they're not very clean. Just serviceable. The park isn't large and on a hillside so quite steep to walk around and to the top if you have mobility issues. There are public toilets but they are not the best, so I would suggest using those on the carpark below.

Catholic church
Eglise Ste Marie, originally constructed in the 12th century and later reconstructed in the 14th and 15th centuries, has a rich history. It was deconsecrated during the French Revolution and repurposed as a weapons factory before being used as a post office and clinic. The church is known for its magnificent architecture and hosts intriguing celebrations.
(Translated by Google) A very beautiful building in the general Gothic style, the cathedral was built on the site of a Carolingian Romanesque abbey (12th century). The origin of the abbey is lost in legends, probably in the first half of the 9th century by Pepin[3], king of Aquitaine. The bell tower-porch, the Saint-Benoît chapel, the magnificent facade of the chapter house in the cloister courtyard and the lantern of the dead remain. I recommend taking a tour of the building to fully enjoy the place. The Marqueyssac gardens, situated on a hilltop south of La Roque-Gageac, offer breathtaking panoramic views of the Dordogne Valley. The 19th-century gardens feature around 150,000 meticulously hand-pruned boxwoods that form intricate patterns and mazes. Visitors can stroll along the 6-kilometer trails, passing by waterfalls, an aviary, and even peacocks.
A fabulous day out. The topiary is beautiful. We visited on a Sunday, attended the morning yoga session, had a short guided tour, then walked round the extensive gardens before doing the via ferrata. We also had a delicious ice cream at the cafe. Great value for money. All the staff are super friendly and very helpful (Thank you!) Highly recommended!

A magnificent location with wonderful views, an incredible sculpted garden and plenty to explore. We took an afternoon to get our and enjoy some nature after a few days of taking in the well known historical sites in the area. It was a fine weather day, and we very much enjoyed a leisurely afternoon in these grounds. The views are far reaching, the paths calming and very well maintained, and called off with a nice restaurant just above the entrance or, along the patna ways, a creperie. The chateau in the grounds was an unexpected highlight, with some interesting history and several displays about the link between the owner and the illustrator of the Michelin Man. A must see for all
R C — Google review
A wonderful part of the Dordogne. There is plenty of parking and the approach to the manor house gives you an idea of the creativity of the gardeners who shape the box hedges into fantastic arrangements. The walk along the ridge has quite a few pathways and also some fun things for kids. It is a long walk and so many vistas to explore. The restaurant is good but pricey. €6.50 for a finger of lemon juice in a glass and a jug of water. It’s was refreshing though.

Brilliant gardens. Nice house and wonderful views over the Dordogne River and valley especially from the Belvedere viewpoint. Wonderful sights of wild cyclamen (it was autumn) throughout.

This was so much fun! Kids loved the adventure of the paths lined with hedges too. Felt like something out of a story book. This was pram accessible the whole way too. Some parts easier than others. We had ice cream and coffee at the tea house and it was delicious.

Fabulous gardens. Great views of the countryside. Plenty of exercise, bring water bottles. My ten year old daughter loved it, treated it like an adventure to discover hidden areas, and wants to go back next year. Once you've admired the topiary go into the chateau to watch a video about the gardners' work.

Very beautiful, calm place. A bit pricy though - 12,9 per person. But one can spend there couple of hours or more.

We went anticipating a 1-2 hour visit. My partner and children (4 and 8) ended up spending most of the day there while I went to deal with an issue with our car that took much longer than expected. No one complained because there was so much to see and do! The only tips: the rock climbing wall for children is only in the AM, the via ferrata requires fully closed shoes (eg. Not Keens), and children requiring two accompanying adults.

Château des Milandes is a magnificent 15th-century castle located in the heart of the Black Perigord on the south bank of the Dordogne. Once home to entertainer Josephine Baker, it now features displays tracing her remarkable life. The castle offers visitors an opportunity to explore its history and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding area. Additionally, there are restaurants nearby where guests can savor local cuisine after visiting this historic landmark.
This Chateau is really worth a visit. It is attractive architecturally. It is made especially attractive by the well currated story of Josephine Bakers' life there, who was quite an amazing woman. It is set in beautifully landscaped grounds and has a great bistro. Basically, it's just a great place to visit.

absolutely lovely experience! the tour was great with audio options in several languages. not too crowded and you could spend as much time in each room as you wanted. very detailed history and descriptions of each room. the gardens were beautiful and so lovely to room. even stayed for the bird show which was so cool, they did a great job showing the birds around to every corner where people were sitting. could easily spend the whole day there, so much to see!!
Abby R — Google review
Get a glimpse of what Josephine Baker was as a person and where she lived. Lots of personal letters, clothing to see to get a imagine of life back in the 30,40's and so on. Not only the chateau is worth the visit but also the garden. It's worth the visit on its own. Beautifully landscapes garden, downside is the owls and falcons being in, what looks to me a small cage. Feels like that shouldn't be a thing in 2025. You do get to see them close by. You probably wouldn't see them in the wild

A very different take on a traditional chateau experience. It is quite small but well worth a visit if you are in the area with some really interesting rooms and stories behind the building. For those with dogs, the website says small dogs allowed, which they are, but only if you carry them! One to be aware of in case your small dog is a little hefty like ours was 🤣

A very nice restored castle with information in French and English language. You can walk around the grounds too, expect a visit of 1,5 - 2 hours or max 1 hour if you are rushing. There is also a seating area outside with some limited food options. Entrance 10 euro per person and 5 euro for children aged 6-18, children under 6 are free. A recommendation if you are in the area.

Nice chateau. It's smaller than we expected. Good information in English. We were the only English in there following a large escorted tour in French, so we kept going ahead and moving back so we didn't interrupt their tour. We may have missed something but we didn't understand the significance of one whole room dedicated to Greek mythology. Interesting as it was we didn't see the relevance. Anyway we enjoyed the visit.

A beautiful castle with a unique and imaginative approach to showcasing its rich heritage and history. The story of the castle is brought to life through a series of thoughtfully curated displays, each representing a different period in its long past. Several rooms are creatively reimagined, blending their original functions with artistic interpretations that add depth and intrigue. A highlight of the visit is the mythical Chamber of Artimus—an immersive and atmospheric experience that’s not to be missed.

A real disappointment that costs €11 per person where there are few interesting things to see, a mixture of period furniture, the family who apparently lives on site and the so-called mystery of "la Dame Blanche" for the idiots ! There are so many more beautiful castles in the region so avoid it !

If you like to visit places that appear authentic then this manor does well. You need to climb up winding stone stairs but there’s a rail to hold on to and as I’ve a new hip, that helped me. The rooms are well set out and you wonder how they managed to get the heavy wooden furniture up! The kitchen has some interesting features and the attic where the stone roof is visible. As an old town house of some importance it’s a good place to visit with its regency musical background and we were surprised there weren’t more people there. It added to our stay in Sarlat.

We canoed the 5 castles route (16km) in a dual canoe, with a double paddle and single paddle, and it was glorious! Lots of snack bars and stop off points - we are by no means super fit, but felt very capable of the 16km route (with a loo stop and lunch stop). So well organised, many gorgeous views and very helpful staff. Would definitely recommend!

Absolutely beautiful. We did the shorter 12km (2.5 hour) option. The scenery is breathtaking. It’s all very straightforward including booking by phone or online. The route from Vitrac to Castlenaud was great including for a 10 year old. The bus collects you at the end so you’re always travelling downstream. You can hire a big sealed bucket for only 2 euros if you want to take your picnic with you. We loved seeing the Villages and chateaus from the river. There are small pebble beaches, deep patches for swimming, and no rapids! We also saw 3 kingfishers. Feel so lucky. Recommend to book ahead as registration busy in the morning.

We also had lunch at a restaurant there. Once on the river again we swam a little. Along the way we saw several fish 1m long I believe to be barbs. Some small rapids with a few rocks but overall a lazy limestone bottom river. After passing the 5th bridge we took a bus back to the star point. Rent a dry bucket for your things just in case…

Thoroughly enjoyable and would recommend to anyone. Anaëlle was so helpful on both days and made the whole experience so memorable. After getting back to the site after our journey, we enjoyed a lovely croque monsieur with frites. Just the ticket. Visitors can observe animals such as geese, chickens and sheep while appreciating modern farming practices that still honor their place in history.
A nicely laid out homage to dry stone building, particularly the local French variety. There are also some wonderful old farming machines on display and plenty of turkeys and geese running around.

Nice small interesting family run exhibition about these old stone built houses. Helpful leaflet in English. Friendly lady on reception Refreshments are good prices!
Peter H — Google review
The exhibited buildings, farm implements & agricultural machines along with the photographs, films and history were very explanatory of how life has been lived there, giving respectful attention to the parents and grandparents who worked so hard to renew the place. The instructional examples of how the stone buildings were made was very interesting to see, along with the related photos from many places in the world. Seeing the animals; the geese, chickens and ducklings, along with the sheep showed how people can continue to work hard at their modern farming life while showing their place in history. It is an inspiring place.

A French farm house from the previous century offers a great adventure for growing up children. Nostalgic mood and many interesting things to learn about rural France from the nineteenth century. The ticket is the right value for money.

Ascenseur Panoramique, located within the bell tower of Sainte-Marie in Sarlat, offers a unique experience with its panoramic elevator that ascends 35m. Visitors are treated to breathtaking 360-degree views of the town from the top, providing a great vantage point to admire Sarlat's layout. The elevator is housed in an old building and offers an impressive perspective of Sarlat.
A multi-dimensional experience. Firstly, the elevator saves you having to climb up the former church tower. Furthermore, you don't just go up, you also stay in the elevator at the top. The plexiglass walls allow a breathtaking view of the whole of Sarlat from above the church tower. Last but not least, the guide offered us a very entertaining and refreshing spectacle. He combined a lot of humor and joy in his work with his language skills to tell each guest individual stories. Great! The elevator is always guided. That's why you should buy tickets in advance, as space is limited to 8 people.
Tassilo K — Google review
A quick 15min experience to get the overview of the town both visually and in terms of history. Elevator is open on top so you get fresh air and fits about 8 people.. With the summer heat, I recommend going before 10:30 or after 7pm. The hours were slightly different than those posted on the internet and tickets sell out super fast, but staff was super friendly and helped my family get tickets for later in the day. Definitely worth it!
Celine — Google review
when you walk into the elevator, take the right side for church, left for city and elevator door for manoir. Dont go to the back, not worth it. the top 360 view has glass barrier, I suggest all photographer to go there early because the sun can cause reflection on the glass
Saran L — Google review
I was in Sarlat in the middle of June and this lift was barely in operation. One day it was closed for ‘too high heat’ (high 20s so definitely not that hot. Do they ever open in July and August?), another day for ‘strong wind’ (sure it was a little windy, but not such a strong wind to think it would affect a lift). Too high safety standards or plain laziness?
Elena — Google review
The view from the tower was great. The gentleman operating the lift was either drunk or on drugs. We didn’t enjoy being manhandled or taken the **** out of. Wonderful place but this tarnished our experience.

Cap Blanc rock shelter is a prehistoric site located 7 km from Les Eyzies, dating back to the Middle Magdalenian period around 14,000 years ago. The shelter features a remarkable sculpted frieze spanning 14 meters of wall, depicting horses, bison, and deer in low and high relief. Excavations in 1909 revealed cut flints and worked bones. Visitors find the tour guide informative and appreciate the different lighting options that enhance the experience.
An incredible place - it's a privilege to be able to visit it. Our guide was fantastic - she really brought the rock carvings to life and made the visit entertaining while also being very informative.

Another must do in the Vézère valley. Well worth a visit and finally a prehistoric site you can visit as so many are currently closed

We had a very knowledgeable guide who made the experience much richer. Though you can see the main carvings easily enough there's much more there that the guide picked out for us.
Jim S — Google review
The young French lady was excellent. Knowledgeable and with superb English she really brought it to life and pointed out things we would never have seen otherwise. Must pre-book, make haste because they're probably going to restrict access to this actual site.
KC — Google review
This is a must of you're in France and appreciate archeology/ history. You get to stand very close to stone wall relief carvings that are approximately 15,000 years old-! It is an unexplainably wonderful experience that doesn't require a lot of time to tour. You will likely need to buy your ticket in advance as they were selling out days in advance when we were there in September. Also note, there are many different ancient caves/ areas to potentially tour, so investigate your options before you go. This one requires a little nature walk to get to the site, then the actual viewing area is one secured indoor room. You won't need any special gear or clothing to enjoy this tour.

Outstanding! If you're at all interested in our pre history this is a must. We had Pascal as our guide, can't praise him highly enough - such passion and knowledge about the carvings. So grateful to him for bringing it alive for us today. Photography of the carvings not allowed.

La Forêt des Écureuils, located near Sarlat, offers an exciting day out for families with children of various ages. The park features routes suitable for different abilities, from easy options for younger kids to more challenging courses for older ones. Visitors can enjoy via ferrata and tree routes, including a thrilling zip line ride at the end. The staff is praised for being helpful and accommodating, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.
My kids had a great time here. Fantastic long zip line, not too much waiting. Plenty of seats around for waiting parents. Food available on site.

This place is genuinely brilliant. It takes about 2 1/2 - 3 hours to get round everything, so it's great value for money. Also, they have an amazing clip-in system where it is literally impossible not to be secured to a safety line at all times, so parents can feel at ease. The dual zip line is incredible - 170 metres each way, across a valley. Best value tree-top course I've ever been at.
Ben P — Google review
Really welcoming and fun. We spent 4 hours here and had a great time! It’s such a lovely shady forest but still worth coming at 9:30am before it gets very warm. We did the red and blue, we all did black route number 2 - even a 10 year old - this includes 170m and again 180m zip lines. Thrilling! All the staff without exception were friendly, calm and knowledgeable. At lunch time there are paninis, pizzas and chips available. The mechanism was new to us, with a magnet clic clac system. It was good and felt robust. Great views from the top. Highly recommended!

Great day out here with via ferrata and parcours tree routes. Routes for all abilities and some to challenge. Good long zip wire ride at the end, put and back so really 2 long rides on 2 separate lines. Staff very helpful and accommodating.

If you're familiar with Go-Ape in the UK this is similar but better. There's a via ferrata too. The range of tree-top challenges is divided into four skill levels (set out by colours) to suit all kids and adults, and the zip wires raise the adrenaline levels. If your kids loves activities then don't miss this is you're in the area.

It was donated to the city by the Rougies foie gras company, whose value is estimated at between €100,000 and €150,000. They were created in 1997 and are the result of a project that was originally planned to feature a cart full of geese. However, the final sculpture was deemed too dominant, and it was decided to create a simple, less imposing sculpture. Most visitors take photos astride the back of one of the geese. (Translated by Google) It is a beautiful and very old fountain, located in the historic center of the city. It is set back from the street, at the end of a small courtyard, in a cave built in the 12th century. It was intended to supply the city with drinking water. Unfortunately the proximity of the houses and the stables located above the cave made it unfit for consumption in the 19th century. It was walled up and accessible to the public again in 1970, but the quality of its water has not really improved!!! The water arrives in a large basin, under a beautiful arch, channeled by a low wall from which 4 spouts emerge to draw water. A statue of the virgin sits at the bottom of this cavity. In summer, it's nice to enjoy the freshness of the place! It's really a shame that this place is not highlighted!!! Elle fut murée et de nouveau accessible au public en 1970, mais la qualité de son eau ne s’est pas vraiment améliorée !!! A fabulous old château. Oh we can only imagine what happened inside these walls (the ones remaining!) . We love seeing these old authentic majestic buildings.... And this one really is marvellous. Fabulous.

A guy from the region buys a castle that has been derelict since 1944 (the Nazis demolished the castle) and tries to rebuild it single-handedly. Given the mammoth task, I don't know whether he is very motivated or just crazy. But what I do know is that it is great fun to walk through the walls and there is something to discover at every corner and the castle with its tunnel and cave is a paradise for explorers. Visit the castle and support this man in preserving a piece of the region's culture. Warning: the tunnel under the castle may end up being too narrow for people with "large bodies" 😉
Christian S — Google review
A bit different to other castles in the area. Some great features to discover. Worth the price for the tunnel alone! Cash only.
Michael J — Google review
An amazing experience in the area. The château is currently being worked on but you can access a vast amount of the ruin due to French “health and safety” 😂 Well worth the trip with a lot to see including the remaining vaulted grey hall, kitchen and underground tunnels along with 5-6m of tunnels to explore. Such a shame that this monument was birth down by the SS during WW2

Stunning and fascinating experience. A heroic project to rescue and restore a 13C chateau that was deliberately destroyed during WWII.
Ralph D — Google review
Louis de Funes was here. :) It would have been nice if more history of the place was available and if the writings were not in handwriting French so you could more easily use online translators. Nevertheless, the place is beautiful, and it sure must have been a rich castle before it went into ruins. The tunnel underground was a nice added value.

Ok, let's be clear. The Museum is run by a commercial seller who provides a tasting at the end of the visit orientated to their shop, but with no pressure to purchase! However, if you managed to follow one of the excellent Tourist Office guided tours beforehand, where the "Lauzes" roofs are explained, as well as the reason behind the very tall Bourgois "staircase towers", the Museum is a reasonably priced and fabulous way to actually get up close and see for yourself the inside of one of these fascinating buildings, which has only recently been beautifully renovated. The tour is very informative and humorous with a little surprise or two along the way. A special mention for the lady at the entrance who was delightful, very welcoming and knowledgeable.

Exceptional truffle tour of truffles and the area! We learned so much about the history of truffles and modern day use. Adrian and multi media displays elaborated on many interesting details facts that we thoroughly enjoyed. Highly recommend making time for this fascinating tour!
Jean S — Google review
It isnt all about truffles! We were lucky enough to go when the only other customer was also a native English speaker so the guide spoke ( perfect) English throughout rather than us relying on an audio guide. It was very interesting - we learnt about the history of the region as well as the architecture of the beautiful old building. our guide, Adrian, was really friendly and knowledgeable as well as being a really lovely person. Of course, we learnt all about the cultivation, hunting and sale of truffles and got to taste food and drink flavoured with them. You finish off in a truffle shop but it's not a hard sell. The only thing we didn't like was the truffles but they must be an acquired taste!

During my recent travels, I stumbled upon the enchanting gallery of Sophie Noëllet while exploring the charming streets of Sarlat. This delightful find was a breath of fresh air, especially as I sought to escape the bustling market crowds. The moment I stepped inside, I was greeted with warmth and hospitality that made me feel right at home. Sophie’s artwork is nothing short of spectacular; her unique blend of classic themes intertwined with elements from pop culture creates an intriguing visual experience.
I stopped by to buy a few postcards with Harry Potter and Mickey Mouse motives. And then I came back to buy a small painting for kids room… and left with that one and a bigger painting too! Nice modern art and very pleasant artist. Thank you!
