Alnwick Castle, located in Northumberland, UK, is one of the largest inhabited castles in the country. It has gained fame for its connection to the Harry Potter films and Downton Abbey. The castle's impressive structure has made it a popular filming location. Visitors can explore its rich history as it has been home to the Duke of Northumberland's family for over 700 years.
Such fun. Perfect size for a couple hours of investigating. The castle was impeccably maintained and absolutely gorgeous inside and out. The cafe was delicious and well priced with plenty of options. The gardens were also nice and the hot food selections there were great. Good place for kids/families. We had a great time wandering around!

A gorgeous castle with a fascinating history—definitely worth a visit! The views are breathtaking, and the staff are warm and welcoming. I also had the chance to join a Quidditch lesson, which was so much fun (even tho it’s serious business!). Overall, a wonderful and memorable experience :)))”
Elena I — Google review
This castle is in a different league! The rooms are extremely ornate, great portraits, fantastic ceilings and amazing fireplaces. A shame that indoor photography was not allowed. It is lived in. The views outside are wonderful , also great exhibits of armoury and all the paraphernalia that goes with it. A 'must see' for all.
Sheila D — Google review
We visited with our whole family and had an amazing time! We bought our tickets in advance and came just 2 days before the season ended. The staff were fantastic — even with some power issues, they handled everything smoothly and still made the experience great for everyone. The weather was perfect, the history of the castle is incredible, and the broomstick flying activity was a big hit with the kids! A beautiful place full of charm and stories. Highly recommend visiting Alnwick Castle!
Rob — Google review
Stunning place to visit. Fun for all the family. Plenty to do and see. It's amazing to know that the family still live there during the public closing time and during the winter. The rooms are beautiful and awe-inspiring. I wish my physical media collection looked like their library. The grounds are great and we even got to learn how to fly our broomsticks. Well worth a visit. The dragon area was a great addition too, well thought out. Lots of toilets and multiple gift shops.
Adam B — Google review
Gorgeous castle! For Harry Potter fans, this is where the famous broomstick flying scene from the first movie was filmed! There are talks and events throughout the day regarding the magical side of the castle as well as more traditional evens like weapons and armor talks, soap making and a fun dragon quest! A place with rich history and enjoyability for all ages! 10/10 highly recommend
Yoshua N — Google review
Best intact and still working castle visited. Kids had an amazing time dressing up in medieval costumes, making soap and learning to fly on broomsticks. The adults had an amazing experience with seeing and hearing all the history with very informative guides and information displays.
ANDREW P — Google review
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this castle. It’s beautifully maintained, with a wide range of activities and guided tours that kept me engaged throughout the day. I ended up spending the entire day exploring.

The Alnwick Garden, located near Alnwick Castle, is a stunning garden complex spanning 12 acres. It was envisioned by the Duchess of Northumberland and features the world's largest Tai Haku Cherry Orchard, a massive treehouse, and the impressive Grand Cascade waterfall with 120 water jets. Despite its northeast location, it is easily accessible via road and rail connections.
Beautiful gardens, we went on a Sunday as at the moment they allow dogs on a Sunday and Thursday only, to see the poison garden you have to do the tour as not allowed in on your own which is understandable, very interesting so well worth it, roughly every 30 minutes. £3.50 for the car park which is all day but there is a free carpark 10 minute walk away by Morrisons.
Joanne F — Google review
We first came here 16 years ago and always wanted to come back when we saw the Gardens were to be expanded. An amazing attraction in a beautiful town in Northumberland. The admission is reasonably priced and the highlight for us was the "Poison Garden" and our guide was amazing, entertaining and informative. There is an excellent cafe and restaurant as well. Please visit here.

First time visiting & was in October. So all the plants were dieing off which was inevitable for this time of year but nether the less we had a brilliant day. The waterfall feature is stunning. The tour round the poison garden was great. We had fun in the crazy golf. Had a lovely walk round the gardens & the different water fountains. Will definitely be returning in spring to swing in the cherry trees. Amazing day out. Well worth a visit.
Leona L — Google review
What a fantastic day out! Alnwick Garden is even more impressive in person. The sheer variety of plants is incredible, and the displays, especially the stunning water features, are amazing. I particularly enjoyed the unique Poison Garden tour, which was both entertaining and educational. It's a must-see for anyone in the area!
Michael H — Google review
Lovely day out. I purchased the annual ticket which is well worth the money. We've visited a few times and it's always a great time, all parts of the garden are lovely. The bamboo labyrinth is very cool! Even the food is good!
John C — Google review
The water cascade feature looks impressive, especially so when all the fountain jets are active. Unfortunately most of the time there are no active fountain jets, or only a few are active for a short period. I saw the majority or all the fountain jets active whilst I was having lunch in the cafe, but despite several subsequent attempts to get a video recording of all fountain jets working on a couple of occasions during the afternoon it didn't happen again which is very disappointing. The ornamental garden above the cascade is attractively laid out with trees providing additional height to the hedges around each flower bed. Near the bottom of the cascade is a hedged maze like area with multiple interesting water features. The poison garden can only be accessed by guided tour which was very informative and interesting. The cafe serves a good selection of hot and cold food, drinks and cakes and is well laid out. I would recommend visiting, but I think the adult entrance fee is excessive. Although I w

A lovely garden great for all generations. We went when the blossom trees were out and it was beautiful. My daughter and I also had an afternoon tea which was delicious. I would definitely recommend anyone visiting.
Susan S — Google review
A good value day out (£18 online for adults), + £3.50 car park, if you take your own picnic. Poison garden tour included in ticket price. Ornamental garden and water gardens great. Bit disappointed that the largest 'tree house' is a restaurant and the 'potting shed' is a café. However, on a nice day of weather, as it was, very pleasant. Good activities for children, if you have them.

Bailiffgate Museum, housed in a former 1836 church near Alnwick Castle, offers an engaging exploration of the history and culture of North Northumberland. The museum features interactive exhibits and activities that bring to life six captivating themes, making it suitable for visitors of all ages. Additionally, the museum's gallery hosts diverse art and history exhibitions while also offering various workshops, activities, and special events throughout the year.
Visited with my wife, but there are plenty of things here for children. Some interesting facts on local history and it's cheap to get in. It is on 3 floors with some narrow steps, but there is a small lift.

A fantastic museum with a wealth of historical artifacts and exhibits

Was a lovely museum, reasonable priced. Loads of interactive things for the kids to do. Recommend if your spending time in the castle or gardens to not over look the little gem. Staff are so friendly and very informative.
Leigh S — Google review
A smashing little museum over three floors (disabled lift available) Lots on the history of Alnwick, lots of hands on things for the kids and a changing art exhibit on the top floor.

Hidden gem. Great art space upstairs. Museum good for kids. Activities etc. No cafe.

Nice place for a rainy morning with the kids. They enjoyed the trail, and the museum was nice. The lady on the desk was very welcoming.

Totally loved this, today. Its hosting the worst lp sleeves, exhibition! It truly held up its word by having them all on display. Honestly some of them were so funny, some were odd and some were just downright distubing! Such a fun day out. Lovely place to go.

Cafe
Barter Books is a large second-hand bookstore located in the old Victorian Alnwick Railway Station, offering a diverse selection of old and modern books covering various genres such as travel, novels, history, cooking, transport, and art. The store features cozy reading nooks with open fireplaces, two cafes including one for dog owners, and a charming miniature train running along the bookshelves. It also houses a children's room and a quaint coffee shop.
Totally amazing place. You take clean used books in, they're assessed and your given a credit on your account so you can buy a book from the shop. The cafe serves good basic food and drink in a great atmosphere. A model train runs around the top of the shelves, it's very popular.
Robin H — Google review
A great bookshop with a great cafe. Love the idea of turning an old train station into a book shop that has a good variety of books. The cafe is amazing also. We came here for breakfast every time we visit Alnwick. The classic English breakfast was tasty and not greasy at all. The bacon and egg were perfectly cooked. The American pancakes were fluffy and delicious.
Wenyi S — Google review
Spent a Perfect Day at This Enormous Secondhand Bookstore. Stepping inside this massive secondhand bookstore feels like entering another world. Right by the entrance, a cozy fireplace with a burning log and several retro, comfortable sofas catch your eye. The shop even provides thick cushions and soft blankets, making it incredibly inviting for readers to settle in. With shelves upon shelves of books, it’s easy to lose track of time and spend the whole day here. And when you get hungry or thirsty, no worries—the coffee and desserts served at the in-store café are delightful! One of the most charming features has to be the vintage miniature trains running along tracks overhead, adding both movement and a touch of whimsy to the atmosphere. Unique, warm, and full of character—this bookstore is absolutely worth a visit and a perfect spot to snap some photos for your social media. Don’t miss it!
Amanda L — Google review
Gosh the amount of books to chose from is astounding. Unfortunately for me I was looking for a particular one I did not find it. Within the building there are toilets and a cafe. The cafe is very popular I didn't eat here, but 3 of the ladies did. They had Halloumi Burgers. They were very happy with the food and service. The downside to the cafe was that you had to queue for the cafe and only when a table was allocated were you able to order. The seating area was over 4 sections. Similar to a railway carriage. Long and not always connected. There is assorted seating dotted around the interior for you to sit and read, chat and in one area a table that sat at least 6 people. Some of the specialists books were behind glass, but available for purchase. There is a decent children's section. You are allowed to bring your dog, must to on a lead and well behaved. I was advised that cat's were also allowed. I wouldn't recommend you take a cat..... too many dog's and so many people. We are talking about the possibility of returning in November as you can buy book tokens. One of the Ladies wants to buy these for Christmas presents for family and friends. I liked the overhead railway above your head. This is in the front section of the building. Worth a visit, even if like me you don't find what you want.
Suzie S — Google review
The most amazing book shop. Came as a treat for our adult book mad daughter. She was in awe. It made her day. She found several books she's wanted for a long time. But the best thing was, she found a trilogy set she's been after for years, and practically in mint condition, and not badly priced either. We had a lovely breakfast in the 'waiting room' buffet cafe. All freshly cooked and really tasty. The bread/toast, was really nice too. Then later had some really creamy ice cream from their Paradise ice cream parlour. Can not recommend this place enough. Only sorry it's so far away from our home(4+hrs). We will definitely be back when we're in this neck of the woods. 5☆s
Val C — Google review
What an amazing shop. Came across it driving along so pleased I did. I've never seen so many books in one place, they are second hand brilliant idea. I brought 5 books but wanted more, would definitely stop by again if in the area. The cafè food was delicious.
Sarah-Jane J — Google review
A welcome place to escape! It's great fun to bring books for credit, and then to spend the credit on thousands of great books. The cafe and food is also incredible. Would highly recommend a visit.

Nature & Parks
Hulne Park, located near Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, is a detached pleasure ground with a rich history. The park features the 18th-century Brizlee Tower, which was built as a prospect tower and an eye-catcher for visitors driving through the park from the castle.
This is a lovely place with three main walks which are mostly on tarmac or compressed gravel roads through the woods and along the river. We chose the circular red route three which took us to Hulme Abbey which is a marvelous place and famous for its role is Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. No public vehicles, bicycles or dogs are allowed in the park which allows you to enjoy the peace and splendor of the place. Be warned, there is also no cafe or toilets in the park and the walks can take several hours to complete. Well worth a visit if you enjoy walking.
Alan A — Google review
Beautiful park to walk around, various pathways to explore with various gradients but nothing too difficult. No dogs allowed and the park is open 11 until 4 pm, no public toilets. A real gem. There is a priory in the park that you can enter and have a look around. The park is immaculate and well maintained.
Julie B — Google review
Free parking on the road to the entrance Be mindful that there is no cycling, no dogs and you must stay on one of the three designated paths You cannot visit other parts of the park if they are not on the path, however there is plenty to see within the grounds. Parkland, Gothic tower, lovely views and good walking. Hulne Park extends over 3000 acres within a walled enclosure. The Park consists of estate forestry, farm and sawmills. In the midst of Hulne Park there is a Priory (Carmelite), Brizlee Tower built in 1781 and Alnwick Abbey
Mathew B — Google review
Stunning walk. We did the blue route which is about 6.5 miles. Autumn colours of the trees were worth the walk alone but also being able to look round the Priory (red and blue routes) I felt incredibly lucky to be allowed in and see the ruins. We loved this walk (there are also 4 (yellow) and 4.7 mile (red) routes as well) Paths are all gravel / roads so great in all weathers. No dogs allowed which is fair enough as there are so many pheasants and deer. We did this walk on a drizzly day and loved every minute. We will be back :)
Angela T — Google review
Great place for a relaxed circular walk through a privately owned rural estate. Sensibly, dogs aren’t allowed because of the proximity to grazing farm animals, so ignore the one and two star reviews. The pleasure is in the well maintained paths, peaceful rural spaces and scenery. No dogs, playgrounds, cycling, toilets or cafe. That’s its charm.
A I — Google review
Large park / farmland on the outskirts of Alnwick with picturesque walks through. Free to visit ! Free parking along the access road, or a 5 minute walk from the town centre.
B M — Google review
No cycling. No dogs. Lovely walks, colour coded to show the route. Suggested times/number of miles. Not too far from Alnwick Castle & Gardens. Pheasants are common in the grounds. We saw a heron & deer. We walked the RED ROUTE, which is almost 5 miles, taking in the hilltop priory ruins. There are pretty bridges, including stone, timber, steel suspension, and an iron bridge dating back to 1812. There are numerous gravel paths that make this venue unsuitable for wheelchair users. Take your own food & drink. Staff work around the estate on quad bikes & ranger style vehicles. We started our walk at 11am & completed the route just after 4pm, which is when the park closes to the public. (late August 2023)
Karen C — Google review
Beautiful historic parkland ..NOT A PUBLIC PARK , as some people think it is. Don't miss it if you're visiting Alnwick. No cars or dogs allowed which is great . Makes for a peaceful walk without the scurge of lazy dogowners and their poobags .

Dunstanburgh Castle is a captivating 14th-century ruined fortress with a twin-towered keep, offering stunning sea views and picnic areas. Situated on a remote windswept headland, this dramatic and mysterious ruin survived sieges and fierce fighting during the Wars of the Roses. It stands as an iconic sight in Northumberland, just a short walk from the picturesque fishing village of Craster.
June 17th 2025 visit. English Heritage - free for members. Just a stunning location for a castle - one of the best castles to visit on a good sunny and windy day! Park near Dunstan Steads instead of Craster - and walk alongside the beautiful golf course. Some incredible history attached to this castle so get a guide book and find a sheltered place to sit and learn...! Brilliant all round. 5 out of 5.
David H — Google review
A lovely coastal walk to get up to the castle takes around 20-30 minutes from the harbour depending on how fast you walk. The views from the castle and on the walk up are stunning. The castle doesn't have a great deal left but you can get up the main tower and the views from the top are fantastic. The staff were great and informative. One told us that you can sometimes see dolphins off the coast. There are toilets on site. You will need to park on the road leading in to the coastal town and walk up to the castle.
Adam B — Google review
Undoubtedly one of the finest English Heritage sites to visit in the country. Stunning position on the cliffs and the castle ruins are visible for miles. You can walk from Craster (just over a mile), but we approached from Dunstan Steads (under a mile). Excellent views of the birds on the cliffs. At the castle the cliffs are mainly fenced off but there are warning signs of the sheer drop. Terrific views from the top of the castle - care needed on the spiral staircase though. There are toilets , and a small English Heritage shop - very helpful staff. Definitely worth making the effort to visit.

I’ve wanted to visit Dunstanburgh Castle since I was a nipper and finally got to visit in October 2025. It didn’t disappoint. Bonus it’s dog friendly but there is cattle/sheep on the section between Craster and the castle itself. Nice ruins to wander around with stunning views. We paid £6.80 each, discount for booking online before going. Not enough signage about the history, probably want to sell you a guidebook for £4.50 instead. We extended the walk by taking our dog down to Embleton Bay afterwards. A great half day out.

Lovely Spot and Stunning Views!
We parked at the Craster car park — really convenient, with payment options by card, cash, or app. It’s just a short walk to the beachfront from there. Once you reach the shore, you can take a scenic walk to the castle (about 40–45 minutes). The views along the seafront are absolutely stunning — a pure joy for the soul.
Florin C — Google review
Lovely walk to the castle from Craster to see the ruins of the castle. The Dunstanburgh Castle is in hands of English Heritage but it's owned by National Trust so it's free entry for NT members too. The staff made some sarcastic comments about NT when they checked our passes but the rest of the staff were nice and friendly. The castle is situated in a very windy spot but if you go on tower the views are absolutely stunning. There are some benches and tables available in the yard, toilets available too but no running water.
Klaudia — Google review
Lovely place to visit. Staff were really friendly, well-maintained, and not too busy. Just mind out that it's a reasonably long walk from the car park if you have a toddler with you!

Fantastic castle. Beautiful ruins of a once majestic castle. The site and the grounds are gorgeous, the drama of the setting cannot be overstated. Easy parking although about 30 minute walk across fields to the castle: generally flat ground and a pathway to keep to for ease. Wish I lived locally so I could go more often.

The Alnwick Playhouse is a charming and historic venue that offers a variety of entertainment options. From live performances to film screenings, this theatre has been a vibrant arts center since 1990. Visitors can enjoy touring and local productions, music, dance, and art exhibitions. Additionally, the Playhouse features Mackennas cafe which is known for serving the best coffee in town and delicious brunch options.
We visited recently to watch A Christmas Carol and we had such a positive experience. Really friendly staff who directed us to our seats. The seating was very comfortable. At 6’3” I tend to struggle for comfort but no problems. We’ve been in before to have a coffee and cake and love the atmosphere. Our hope is to move to Alnwick in the near future and make the Playhouse a regular place for us to carry on visiting.

What a fantastic venue within walking distance of the town centre. It's a great asset to the town. Lots going on there, too. It's very modern inside, good cafe & bar downstairs and upstairs. All seats have plenty of leg room and a great view of the stage. Free parking is just around the corner too, which was an added bonus.

Went to see Joe McElderry and had such a lovely time! The venue was great — really clean and comfortable, and the seats were so comfy too. The staff were really pleasant and understanding when I turned up a bit late, which made everything feel more relaxed. All round a lovely experience and a great night out! 🎶✨

We visited the Alnwick Playhouse recently while on a holiday in Amble. As a wheelchair user the staff could not have been more kinder. A lady staff member waited by the open air lift to guide me down and help with any issues, she showed my wife and I to our seats and afterwards as I went to the snacks area the kind young lady behind the counter carried our coffee and snacks right to our seating area. We actually came here to see the new Superman movie and I was absolutely delighted when I realised the movie screen was right down to the floor, I loved this as we were sitting in the front row and it felt like we were watching a 600 inch (guessing the size as I wasn’t really sure) tv at home, my photos might help to explain this but I found it to be a unique experience and would love to go again one day, the combination of the extremely friendly and helpful staff and the unique viewing experience is something I will always remember.
Stephen B — Google review
First time going for a movie. Great venue for a movie! Fine sound system and projection was great as well. Definitely will be seeing more movies here ! Great venue for concerts . Add bonus, there is a nice Library there too. We have attended several concerts here. The acoustics are fine as are seating, very comfortable.
John C — Google review
Staying in Alnwick for the week, we wandered into the town centre and fancied stopping somewhere for breakfast. Three cafes weren't offering food for various reasons so we carried on walking to the Playhouse. We settled for coffee and scones in the end which were fine. Generously sized (when did scones get so big??) and freshly baked, the cheese scones were welcome and filling. The place was buzzing (Sat lunchtime) and on the noisy side with background music as well. It looked like a busy, well loved and appreciated place to meet and see events. Wish we had something similar where we live. Dog friendly although our dog is jumpy and didn't like the noise.

Modern British restaurant
If you're looking for a breathtakingly unique dining experience, then The Treehouse Restaurant is definitely worth a visit. This rustic eatery is set high in the treetops of Alnwick Garden, and features branches that plunge through the floor as well as a roaring fire. The menu features contemporary cuisine with dishes such as twice-baked wild garlic souffle and beetroot-and-British bacon salad.
After a recommendation of a friend, I went here with my husband to celebrate our anniversary. From outside, they place got us very excited and when we came in, at the beginning we thought we were alone as it was very quiet. The atmosphere was magic with all the fairy lights together with the wooden furniture and walls. All staff was marvellous and food was outstanding. Thank you so much for making it so special 🙏🏼

Very nice ambience, cool lighting and tree house setting.. food ok service very good.. would have preferred a more interesting menu. I had the King Prawn and Beef noodles dish which had little taste and watery and couldn't taste the lemon or ginger. The better half had pork tenderloin which was tough as an old boot.. tbf they swapped this for lamb dish.. Cauliflower very Al dente lol.. we had the wine free and cheaper lamb dish so happy with the customer service. Would we go back.. not at those prices for the food quality/taste. Potentially some low background music would be good and better description of food on menu.

STUNNING!!! 7 of us came to the restaurant. The food was superb!! The atmosphere was lovely. I have a nut allergy and they did everything to make sure I stayed alive. Have to say the best Sunday roast I’ve had in years.

The Alnwick Garden Treehouse is such a unique and beautiful setting. Dining in a literal treehouse is an amazing experience, and the ambiance is magical. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the surroundings. The meal was quite disappointing as you can see from photos 😕 which was a shame. While I'd highly recommend visiting the Treehouse for a drink or to see the place, I'd probably eat elsewhere next time

What’s not to love! A magical experience, the feeling of eating in a fairy light lit tree house. All we needed was for Tinkerbell to appear! The service was friendly and the food was good, a lovely place to pass the time and eat.

This food was incredible full of flavour there was a couple of vegan options for each course and the food wasn't bland at all. I think it was really good value for money in a beautiful setting.

My family of four visited the Treehouse Restaurant. The setting was lovely and unique, with a magical treehouse feel. Staff were friendly and welcoming. However, the Easter 2/3-course lunch set was disappointing. The mushroom starter was too salty, and the coley main lacked flavour. The portion was small.

Alnwick Market is a delightful monthly event held in the historic market square of Alnwick. The market offers an array of locally produced food, including artisan breads, meats, and fish. Surrounding the square are traditional stone buildings housing various shops, cafes, and restaurants. Additionally, the town hosts a weekly market on Thursdays and Sundays where visitors can shop for local goods and gifts from numerous stalls.
Beautiful place with attractions as a beautiful castle, gardens and walkable market town. I went on Thursday and the market was busy with stalls. Lots of art, lovely homemade scones, owls show and on the other hand, lots of history with walls, fountains, river walks and plenty of car spaces free and £3 at the entrance of the town near the castle.

Alnwick – Where Medieval Legends Meet Modern Life This morning we had the chance to explore Alnwick, a Northumberland gem where history and community come together beautifully. From wandering through the lively market square, filled with artisan stalls and the hum of local life, to stepping under the arch of Pottergate Tower, every corner told a story. One highlight was standing before the statue of Harry Hotspur, Alnwick’s legendary knight whose fiery spirit inspired Shakespeare and whose name still resonates centuries later. What struck me most wasn’t just the history, but the vibrancy of the town today – independent shops, friendly faces, and a sense of pride that made it feel alive and welcoming. Alnwick is more than a stop on the map; it’s a reminder of how communities can honour their past while thriving in the present. And it’s certainly somewhere I’ll return to again.

Waste of a trip. Hand full of stalls took 2 mins to walk around. Wouldn’t even class it as a market. Update reply: Well there absolutely was not 38 stalls ha no where near 😂 I never mentioned anything about the stall holders quality of stall or what they sold, so don’t twist things. Clearly an organiser who can’t take criticism.

Lovely town and market. Some beautiful 3d pictures, retro tiles and Some fab cafes and the tastiest was market the bratwurst for me and venison burger for the hubby. Beautiful place to visit. Enjoyed the castle too.

St Michael's Church in Alnwick is a charming and historic place of worship that offers a serene and joyful atmosphere. The ministers are highly praised for their warmth and positivity, creating a welcoming environment, especially during these challenging times. Visitors have described it as a lovely old church with beautiful grounds, making it an ideal spot for a peaceful visit. The church also features an interesting cemetery, adding to its historical appeal.
A lovely church. Well worth a visit

An interesting church that has seen many alterations over the years. So many guidebooks! There is a guidebook 'A short history of the building' that goes into great detail on the building and the changes over the years. There is a separate short guide to the windows and memorials, although without pictures. Another guide is the 'Historic graffiti from the Tower', this one with pictures of many of the 17th & 18th century images found during the tower roof repair. best however is the simple 'Exploring St Michael's Church' leaflet which has a good number of interesting features to look for. This is a spacious church, light and airy with some very good stained glass. Worth calling in.

Wonderful community of worshippers. It's nice to see such an active church in this historical gem of 15th century architecture. The lookout tower at the SE of the building is rather unique. A really fine example of the coat of arms over a doorway, perhaps Henry VIII era. A very welcoming place well worth a visit.

Having spent a lovely few hours in Alnwick we popped into the grounds of St Michael's on our way back to the car from Alnwick Castle.
David C — Google review
Alnwick's parish church of St Michael is one of the best-preserved and architecturally outstanding churches in Northumberland. The first church on this site may have been established as early as the 8th century but the first written record of a church at Alnwick dates to the 12th century. In 1147 Eustace fitz John gave the 'Chapel of Alnwick' to the newly established Abbey. The only part of that 12th-century building to survive is a section of herringbone stonework in the chancel. St Michael's was badly damaged during Scottish raids in the early 14th century. The church was rebuilt and the present nave erected in the late 14th century. The north aisle was added at the same time. Most of the present building dates to the 15th century and is an excellent example of the Perpendicular Gothic style.

The Dirty Bottles is a historic taproom and smokehouse located near Alnwick Castle in Northumberland. The pub has been open for over two centuries, with the building dating back to the 1600s. Originally known as Ye Old Cross Inn, it gained its current name due to the famous Curse of the Dirty Bottles. The interior is a blend of period charm and modern comfort, creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
Stayed here for a couple of nights. The room was very spacious and very well appointed and immaculately clean. Lovely en suite shower room also. The staff are amazing, especially Ben, lovely lad working the bar. Great range of drinks, beers, ales, lagers wines, spirits etc. Can definitely recommend and would stay again but the only problem is that long stay car parking in Alnwick is difficult. The long stay car parks are a maximum of a 24 hour stay and no return within 4 hours which is a phaff and also spaces are limited so no guarantee of getting a spot.

Had to book table or wait for 45mins, unable to book table so we waited. We were not told by the staff in the restaurant area that there were tables further round past the bar where we could in fact.order food at. We ordered 3 burgers, 1 gluten free 1 veggie and 1 normal. Gluten free was nice however didn't have any tomato or onion like the others did. Veggie one was good and normal one was inedible, it was so tough I couldn't bite through it or cut through it. I had to send it back and wait another 20 mins to eat my burger after everyone else had finished.

We have visited Alnwick regularly for a few years now and Dirty Bottles is always our first booking for food. We are both vegan so love their options....the mushroom tart was reslly tasty as was the vegan burger. Nice range of drinks and really reasonable prices.

Very much the bottom of a mixed bag. Service was very slow. Despite being an incredibly busy Sunday, there was only one member of staff on the bar. Drinks were quite expensive and the food was mediocre at best. The chicken and ham hock pie was quite nice, but their chicken tenders were very greasy and the cheesy garlic bread was simply disappointing.

My wife and I celebrated our marriage with friends and family here. The staff were very helpful in the build up to the event, and were very accommodating. They gave us our own section of the pub for our own festivities, and the bar staff were friendly and easy to deal with. Big appreciation for Sophie who dealt with us the most and was a very friendly, easy person to speak with. We’d definitely come back again.

Was looking for a place that could accommodate 7 of us and a dog, without hesitation the staff told us to take a seat which was fantastic. The 7 food dishes arrived within 20 minutes, all together and piping hot. Great selection of drinks at reasonable prices and take blue light card for discounts. The staff and service were exceptional. The location in the heart of Alnwick town centre is stunning. If you are ever in the area, give this a go. £55 for 7 dishes that were faultless!

The Market Tavern serves a variety of dishes suitable for solo travelers, couples, families, and large groups.
Stopped in at The Market Tavern in Alnwick with my partner and we both went for the fish and chips — honestly, some of the best I’ve ever had. The batter was light and crispy, the fish perfectly cooked, and the portions were really generous. Lovely, cosy atmosphere too with friendly service that made us feel right at home. Couldn’t have asked for a better pub meal!

Visited here the other day looking for some tasty pub food whilst in Alnwick on a trip away for the fiancée’s birthday. What was delivered was unbelievable. From start to finish our entire visit was highly pleasurable. From the drinks being served perfectly (my Strawberry and lime cider had real strawberries and lime garnish) to the wine being of exceptional taste. The menu’s were plentiful. You could tell that the place really cares about their customers. We had amazing starters that were top tier. The Garlic prawns and spam fritters with broon sauce tickled the tastebuds first. Swiftly followed by our main courses. Sweet Jesus. Words cannot describe the explosion of flavours that blessed our mouths. If you’re in Alnwick and wanted some tasty food. Go here! You will not be disappointed

An excellent experience for Sunday Roast. Our B&B host recommended it and it was very good information. We love a traditional Sunday Roast and this delivered mightily. The signature roast beef, vegetables and Yorkshire pudding were amazing. The local beers and wines selection was excellent. A great dining experience.

Really nice atmosphere and enthusiastic staff. Definitely worth booking as it was quite busy on a Thursday night. Food was lovely with a decent selection of vegetarian options. The onion rings in particular was delicious. Would be nice if the cheeseboard was more local cheeses but it was nice either way.

Lovely spot in the centre of Alnwick — great food and service! We dropped into the Market Tavern for lunch yesterday and today, and we really enjoyed ourselves. The place has a proper welcoming pub feel — warm, relaxed and friendly without being noisy. I had the chicken in the basket main while my partner went for the chili con carne, and both dishes were spot on. The chicken was tender with a crisp skin and nicely seasoned, and the chili had that slow-cooked depth with just enough spice to keep things interesting. Service was quick and cheerful too, and the staff seemed genuinely happy to have you there. Prices were fair for the quality, and portions were generous without going overboard. A great choice if you want proper pub food done well in Alnwick. Would happily come back next time we’re in town.

Stayed overnight and had an evening meal. The rooms are clean and well equipped but dated. The meal was excellent! Great atmosphere, great service (the food was a little slow but they were packed) the prawn starter was out of this world!!! Will definitely visit again, there are so many great things on the menu I want to try!!

We went here because one of our party is vegetarian. The menu selection was very good and varied. However, when the food arrived, the seafood linguine was exceptional, really really tasty! Nice pub on the edge of the market place, warm day so we sat outside with drinks and a mixed platter each. Menu is very limited, but that isn’t an issue as there are loads of other places you can go if you want more variety. The place was busy as it was Saturday market day, but the service was quick and efficient and the staff were pleasant and helpful. We enjoyed our food and the ambiance of market day in the sunshine. Would recommend.

Enjoyed our brief lunch here with the cheese board and a side of Chorizo. Staff were friendly and food was good and reasonably priced for a light lunch. Was perfect to sit out on the chairs outside in the square and enjoy the sun and sights. Also dog friendly.

Was drawn to this newly reopened premises . The sharing platter of Charcuterie, but alas it was disappointing, very small ( 2 slices of what can only be shop bought Chorizo, small lump of unknown cheese , oatcakes small x4, pickled artichoke, small gerkins , olives and dressed salad ). Selection of tap craft beers were limited and not the same as the beer menu . Only saving grace were the friendly , happy servers ( who were recently employed ). Special thank you to Jasmine . Worth a visit , but maybe try something else from the menu which my offer better value .

Nestled in Alnwick, Willowburn Sports & Leisure Centre offers a variety of activities for all ages, making it an ideal destination even on rainy days. The center features a 25-meter main swimming pool with a movable floor and a 10-meter teaching pool, catering to both leisurely swimmers and fitness enthusiasts. Additionally, the large sports hall provides space for team sports like football and basketball as well as games like badminton.
The elderly gentleman at the front desk is great. All gym equipment new and not too crowded. It has everything you need and has towels to wipe off equipment and a place to refill your water. Men’s locker room and showers are very clean.

It's a reasonable leisure centre but is quite expensive if you don't qualify for any deals. The pool is always a little cold and the showers have to be reset every 5 seconds or they stop! A jacuzzi would be nice and a sauna but that seems like a distant hope! You pay your taxes and this is all you get!
Hugh H — Google review
This facility overall is rather good. The staff are friendly and helpful. I can comment on the following: *children's soft play area - this was great. £3 each and the kids can play until they are exhausted or hungry. Since I was there when no one else was, my kids took me up to the top and we went down the slide together. I can say from personal experience that it is a fun place to play. Note that it can get loud when a group exercise class is in session next door. *kiddie small pool - this is a nice pool that is shallow enough to suit most younger kids. It is warm and there is a box of pool toys, including pool noodles. There is a lifeguard on duty though children must also be accompanied by an adult. My kids enjoyed this several times over the last few weeks. *larger lap pool - this pool is also great. It is kept at a perfect temperature that doesn't shock the system when you get in but isn't too warm if you are doing laps. Lane swim times can get crowded on occasion, so reserve your spot by calling or fumbling through the awkward website. *bouldering climbing area - this is alas the one downside to the whole facility. As someone who boulders at a bouldering gym several times a week I have to say that this is NOT a bouldering wall. It is an area with some holds screwed into the wall completely higgly-piggly by someone with no experience setting climbing routes. There are no set routes. The colors mean nothing. The holds are not set appropriately to climb from floor to ceiling in any fashion, and you can't climb the overhang ceiling section at all as the holds are incorrect for that type of slope. I also feel that the mat underfoot is too hard to appropriately break a fall from the top of the walls. I strongly recommend to the staff of the facility to invite a bouldering route setter in to re-do the walls with coherent routes that abide by climbing conventions for route colors.
Megan L — Google review
The 2 stars are for the soft play ,I have only been once and felt I never wanted to go back . My partner and I were freezing the whole time ,it felt dark & uninviting, lots of rips in alot of places and did not feel clean atall,I am disappointed as not far from where we live ,one or 2 others we have visited are bright warm airy and very clean with with coffee facilities close to soft play, all of this has totally put us of going again.
Christine R — Google review
Great soft play, nice pool-though kids pool is shallower than we're used to, but they do leave various water toys out for the kids. Reasonabl priced , would visit again when in the area
Kelly G — Google review
The person at reception was kind. But that’s where a good experience ended for us. We booked ahead in ‘swim for all’, paying about £100 in total for the swim for our group and I feel terribly overpriced goods at reception - a trap for excited kids. We discovered that the kids pool was entirely closed for private swimming lessons. The adult pool was also 66% closed for private swimming lessons (a staff member corrected me about the exact percentage!) That meant the whole of the general public were squashed into 2.5 lanes. One lane was being used by a poor guy trying to swim lengths. So at one point I counted 16 people crammed into 1.5 lanes, while at another point I saw only 2 kids with private lessons in the entire rest of the main pool. Also since lessons were nearby, no larger pool toys allowed. I had to stand still in the pool holding a toddler most of the time, to keep out of the way, and as there was nowhere appropriate or safe for him. For £100 quid, I don’t feel this is fair value. ‘Swim for all’ should mean ‘all’, in sensible space in the facility as described. You should tell me at the point of sale, while I can still make a choice, if you’re going to take the majority of the facility out of public service. When raised politely with staff, I feel no real responsibility taken. Trying to tell me it’s all fine felt like gaslighting. If this private company can’t organise a decent value public service for the council, they should hand it back.

My Daughter was in the other day she is just getting back to normal life, after a back injury! Unfortunately she was standing in the way of a really rude and disrespectful member of staff, who though it clearly in his right to call her a moron as he walked up the stairs with an other member of staff and repeated this all the way up the stairs . It is clear this man has forgotten with out people coming to the centre you wouldn't have a job

Nice little museum that charts the history of the Northumberland Fusiliers. Most f the exhibits are large collection of items with a description of all of the items in that part of the collection. The collection mainly consists of medals ( and Victoria Crosses), plus uniforms and other items associated with the Fusiliers. Entrance is free as it's already part of Alnwick Castle
Macedonboy — Google review
Very small museum on 3 floor, which are very cramped and you have to use the spiral staircase to get to the floor, as you would in a castle. I like this idea but the stairs are up and down and the floor are spaced out so bumping into people on the stairs is a high chance with the main castle being so popular. Some people just don't go back when they can and it makes it dangerous. The museum itself was ok and good to see the items on display. There are a few hats to put on for a bit of fun. Admission to this museum is part of your Alnwick castle admission, so the museum is free.

Entered the shop and museum and the staff must have immediately decided I did not have enough money to bother with. Yes your rods are excellent and expensive but not everyone who can afford them comes in a suit and tie. The museum is completely inaccessible up a very tight staircase. Dear House of Hardy you do realise that the UK has a large number of disabled anglers and making a museum accessible if a must.
Dave C — Google review
Very friendly and extremely helpful if looking for fly fishing merchandise. Museum is upstairs, so no good for people who struggle with stairs, but a nice introduction to the Hardy wares.

The Hog's Head Inn is a modern hotel with casual rooms and traditional pub cuisine, offering free breakfast and Wi-Fi. The inn features a wide range of meal options, including the best carvery in Alnwick on Sundays. It is named after the fictional pub in Hogsmeade from Harry Potter, making it a must-visit for Potter fans. The family and dog-friendly inn offers unfussy rooms, including twin, family, and accessible options.
We booked this place as it is very accessible to where we are attending a wedding. At the entrance, there were different brochures of attractions in the area that are good to visit. The room was big, cozy, clean, and had a nice view from our window. We had dinner at the restaurant and the food was fine. I ordered the crispy pork, though it tasted good, I was expecting it to be crispy, but it wasn't. It's more like it was cooked in marination rather than deep-fried to make it crispy. Nevertheless, the staff were accommodating, especially the gentleman who served our food (I didn't catch his name), as well as the lady named Liv, who took our orders and helped us to print a document needed for the wedding the following day. Overall, our stay here so far is amazing, and I can't wait for the free breakfast included in all their room rates.
Jose M — Google review
As a family of 5 its always hard to find a hotel which will accommodate us in 1 room but the Hogs Head was brilliant. We had a very large family room with room for 6 and everything you need. Tea and Coffee facilities with some nice biscuits. Iron, ironing board and even a safe. The room was clean and modern. Then there was the breakfast which was included in the price. This was a nice buffet style breakfast with everything you want. The bar is great with plenty of drinks to chose from and lots of indoor and outdoor seating.

Conveniently located at the side of the a1 on the way in to Alnwick the Hogs Head is a modern building with ample parking. Very pleasant staff on arrival. I was dining alone and I did not feel uncomfortable. I had a very nice sausage and mash and cabbage which was delicious Around £15 so quite good value. This establishment has rooms so I might give them a try next time I'm in the area.

Just got back from a one-night stay and I can’t stop raving about it! The room was spotless, perfectly warm, and the bathroom was just lovely. I enjoyed two meals at the restaurant, and the food and service were top-notch. The team really made me feel welcome from check-in to the end of my stay. If you’re in the area, don’t miss out on this gem!
Dave G — Google review
Visited for drinks over a year ago before a friend's wedding, and went back when we needed to travel to Alnwick. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. We visited during a muggy summer and the room was cool despite no air-con - they did provide a fan, but we barely need to use it. Perks of a stone building. The bed was so comfortable we both slept straight through. The bathroom was cosy, but the shower was nice and powerful. We had dinner, and I'd recommend booking a table when you book your room, as they are always busy - for good reason. Unfortunately some of the menu was unavailable, but the food was incredible, as was the service, and the drinks were really good too. Breakfast was another level entirely, being so closer to the border, you can enjoy the best of English and Scottish breakfasts, proper food to set you up right for the day. If you're ever going through Alnwick, definitely make a stop at The Hog's Head Inn, you won't be disappointed.
Rachel B — Google review
A sour start to my stay here. They cancelled my booking then had me stood at reception 20 minutes whilst they tried to work out where to put me. Then they had the cheek to tell me they'd need me to change rooms part way through my stay. I declined as I was working nights and they expected me to wake up to change rooms. The food was forgettable. The rooms are a good size, but basic. Tiny non smart tv, no air con, no fridge, no gym, no pool. Most staff seemed nice, I think the reservation people cancelled it, not the hotel staff. The phone at check in is so quiet that staff can't hear it, had it worked they would have known I was running late and maybe avoided all the aggro they caused.
Ben C — Google review
Very good value for a really lovely and massive room, extremely clean and quiet. Dinner was exceptional quality and again very reasonable price wise. Looking forward to returning and gutted it’s only one night.

I can not praise the Hoggs Head Inn highly enough. We are staying for a long weekend to explore the county, great location. The room has all you need and is very comfortable. The restaurant is very pleasant and the staff are busy, maybe a little under staffed, but friendly and nothing is a bother. The food is very generous, tasty and a menu that is above the ordinary. Well done 👏 ✔️

Alnmouth Beach, located about 4.5 miles from Alnwick, is a fantastic destination for both dog owners and families. The beach offers plenty of space for dogs to play and run freely, with picturesque walking trails that lead from the countryside to the sea. The charming village of Alnmouth serves as a delightful base for beach outings, featuring cheerful red-roofed houses and easy access to the shore.
Is a beautiful, clean beach that feels calm and natural. The sand is soft, and the views of the sea are really lovely. It’s a great place to go for a quiet day out. You can walk along the beach and through the small village nearby. The fresh air and peaceful views make it a nice spot to relax and enjoy nature. Highly recommend it for a gentle walk and a break from a busy life.

Steven M — Google review
Stunningly beautiful and natural with lovely sands and sea views, with a small harbour just inside the mouth of the River Aln. From the car park by the beach (£2 charge) you can walk straight onto the sands. As you walk south along the beach you can see Alnmouth nestled behind the sand dunes. Keep walking along the beach to reach the mouth of the River Aln and follow it past the small harbour to reach the road up into the town. Such a wide array of beauty and variety to see.
Neil T — Google review
Gorgeous clean, beautiful beach. Car park has an attendant who you pay with a card on the way in. There aren't any toilets that I could see (although there is a sign saying toilets) but if you are interested in a beach with golden sand for both building sandcastles and playing beach volleyball, crystal clear waters and good waves, then this beach is perfect! The car park runs along the front so you don't have to walk far from your car either!

Lilidorei at The Alnwick Garden is a whimsical attraction inspired by a fairy-tale village. It features nine warring clans and is ruled by Lord Elfwin, offering a magical experience for visitors of all ages. The attraction offers various activities and slides for children, creating a fun and engaging atmosphere. Visitors can also explore The Alnwick Garden, which is located nearby. With fantastic facilities and friendly staff, it's an amazing experience for families.
Amazing! It was good to go when it was quiet so we could explore. Such a magical place. Story telling was great and included the children. Secret keepers all wanted to help and played along with the children. We spent over 2 hours could have stayed longer but we had the gardens to explore too! Everywhere was clean and well looked after.
Natalie J — Google review
An excellently themed and magical experience for kids. Theming is lovely and the main play structure is great for kids to explore. Would say it's probably best for kids primary school age but older siblings might still have fun with their younger siblings. My only criticism is that you could get sensory overload at points with all the noises and sounds going on. So just be aware of that if you've got kids who are sensitive that kind of thing.
James A — Google review
Lillidorei was great fun! The play frame is challenging enough for older kids whilst still being accessible for younger ones and the sand pit is clean and good for toddlers. The little houses in the village and the extra activities kept them all busy, and the addition of a tartan loop to your clan ribbon to indicate SEND is a well thought out (though not well advertised) addition.
Hayley T — Google review
Visited on a rainy Sunday with 2 kids aged 6 & 8. We spent approx 3hours here. Signage is pretty poor from the car park, so we ended up walking a long way to get in! Play structure is great fun. We enjoyed doing the trail and kids loved working out the clues. Disappointed you couldnt go in any of the little houses - some have doorbells and you can look through windows. Staff are friendly and kids enjoyed the games which are scattered throughout the trail. There is absolutely no shelter, so definitely make sure you are all appropriately dressed for the weather! It was tough eating our picnic in the pouring rain! We left the storytelling early as it was just too cold and wet to sit still for so long. Really surprised this area (as well as the food/cafe area) are out in the open without any shelter. The play structure also got a bit slippy (+ muddy!) in the rain. Overall, we had a great day.
Sarah — Google review
The website really does explain how it works so check that out. Parents will end up standing or sitting round a fair bit so be prepared (eg wrap up on a cold day) and kids will be charging round like mad. Huge play structure which is brilliant and then there are some other areas you can walk through and interact with and a story telling area. The staff/actors are great and help bring it to life Good choice is limited and not that great. Pretty much everything is also still to pay for even with your ticket (eg parking). It can feel busy but it didn’t impede the small folks from having a brilliant time. You have to exit via a gift shop. Parents - you’re warned (I can hear you all groaning now). Probably worth taking a rucksack with water and snacks and maybe even a picnic (well sandwiches). There’s a sand play area and if your small folk want to use it you may need to clean them up too.
Russ R — Google review
Beautiful park. Great fun for all of the family. Little ones enjoyed peeking into the fairy cottages. Big ones and even parents, enjoyed the play structure and slides! Beautifully crafted fun!
L G — Google review
We had an incredible time at Lilidorei with my 6 year old. The park itself was well laid out with different clans and their houses to visit. The 26 storey slide was their main feature but well-attended by the staff who ensured safety and were really helpful throughout the park. They made all the effort to keep it magical. ✨ Activities planned encouraged us to go round the houses. Perfect weather for it too. We spent over £50 for family of 3 but it was well-worth it for the day out and a one-off treat.

Howick Hall Gardens & Arboretum, the ancestral home of the Earls Grey, is renowned for its stunning spring bulbs, including snowdrops and various daffodil varieties. The Silverwood woodland garden boasts a colorful collection of rhododendron species. In summer, the herbaceous borders burst with geraniums and delphiniums. Visitors can explore the gardens before enjoying a cup of Earl Grey tea at the exclusive Earl Grey Tea House.
Absolutely fabulous place, could have spent much longer there. The grounds are well kept and signposted. A map showing where the benches are, for those less able was a bonus. The guide supplied free of charge was descriptive and useful. The house has two completed rooms which are beautiful. The cafe was excellent as well as the staff. Recommend a visit to this too.

It was really interesting to learn about how they had developed the hall and gardens over time. The gardens were lovely to walk round and the woodland walk we did was very peaceful. Excellent tea room, with a great selection of tea, of course, and gluten free cakes.
Rich M — Google review
Beautiful garden and arboretum well worth a visit. We spent most of the day there including lunch in the tea rooms. Will definitely visit again when we are in the area.
DE5 P — Google review
We visited in mid September on a rainy day. The house only has a few downstairs rooms open for touring. It is self guided but the rooms all have booklets detailing the items and the paintings. the front of the house is filled with facts regarding the house and the gardens. The chapel was well worth seeking out as it featured hand made kneelers that were designed and stitched by volunteer organizations. Each one was unique and I found them to be quite delightful. There was a map with details of the gardens that we could explore. We walked through a few of them, but most of the blooms had died out by mid September. I imagine that they are magnificent in the spring and summer. If you want to enjoy tea in the tea room you must bring cash.

I’ve had a season ticket for Howick Hall gardens for many years. It’s wonderful in every season and has so many interesting features. A beautiful Hall, fabulous gardens especially the Lady Garden and Silverwood woodland garden. There are superb arboretums on the East and West of the Hall with some rare and interesting shrubs and trees. The Long Walk takes you to the coast. Highly recommended at any time of year from the early Spring with the Snowdrop Walks, through Spring with the woodland garden at its peak and Autumn with beautiful colours and berries galore. The tea room is brilliant too with a great selection of meals and cakes. If you’re choosing a garden to visit in Northumberland I’d go to Howick every time.
Ann C — Google review
Beautiful gardens and arboretum with an incredible variety of trees and flowering shrubs and plants. Could certainly support repeat visits to experience all the delights this wonderful woodland surrounded stately home has to offer. The tea rooms housed in part of the East Wing overlooking some of the gardens are also worth a visit (or two) with a great range of lovely fresh food (including very tasty Earl Grey Tea Loaf) of high quality and delightful and friendly staff. So many different places around the grounds to explore - particularly recommend the sensory garden, and the bog garden but see what you like the most. What a magical place!

This is a quiet hidden oasis in Northumberland which in contrast to Alnwick Gardens is not busy, relaxed and almost all flat. We love Alnwick Gardens but this is just so beautiful and quiet that it's worth the £12.10 entry cost. You could easily spend a whole day here including a lovely lunch in the tearoom. Highly recommend this lovely spot.

Nestled along a picturesque riverside, Edlingham Castle is a captivating remnant of 14th-century architecture that tells tales of its storied past. Originally constructed by Sir William Fenton, the castle features an impressive solar tower added by his son, which still stands proudly at three stories high despite the surrounding ruins being mostly at foundation level. This fortified manor house was strategically built to defend against Scottish incursions and offers visitors a glimpse into medieval life.
Tonight me and Star took a nice walk to Edlingham Castle, Star loves exploring castle ruins. Would never have found this place if I wasn't an English Heritage Member. Nice ruins and great little area to explore.

Unexpected find while driving back from Alnwick. There is a small car park, and a short walk down past the church to the castle. The path and field around the castle can be boggy, so wear good shoes - almost lost one of my trainers to the mud. Pretty views and free to access. And quiet - we were the only visitors on the day we stopped by. Plenty of information on site as well.
Donaleen S — Google review
Scenic castle ruins that are free to visit. There is a small carpark near the church and then it’s a short walk to the castle. The church is open to visitors and has information about the castle. The castle doesn’t take long to wander around but looks scenic against the backdrop of the hills and the viaduct.

Fabulous castle ruin in a beautiful setting. Not easy to walk through as very uneven. Dogs are welcome but keep them on a lead...a couple of sheep had escaped and were wandering about. Lots of info in the church next door.

Considering everywhere else was like a quagmire, Foxton was as dry as sticks, always impressed whenever we played here, beautiful links course right on the beach, although it does have the feel of a Parklands Course. Excellent 👍

Lovely place to visit 😊. The hotel, food and a lovely golf course with spectacular views as you play the course. We had rooms without bathrooms so you share a bathroom with a few other rooms. We have booked rooms with ensuite for next year. Our room looked over the 18th green and you could see the sea in the distance. We played the course twice. The first day is was very windy and extremely difficult for me. It was calmer the second day and enjoyed my golf much more 😊. The food was amazing and we had fast and friendly service. You are not able to drive up to the main walk, you will need to park on the verge close to the land owners house and walk down. The walk is measured at 45 minutes and says moderate. Isn't it always lovely to discover something delightful about which one previously knew nothing! This was such a happy find! It is the kind of hut which looks absolutely "right" within the landscape which would be much poorer for its absence. Possibly of use as a wet weather shelter (bench seat within), it is full of framed photographs of old Alnmouth and of the old rowing boat ferries across the river mouth. Church Hill, I gave 5* as if I was able to climb, able bodied, I can imagine I would of liked the scenery at the top. The history is, In 1806, on Christmas day, a storm broke through the channel to what it is today, cutting off the Hill from the rest of the village; during the same storm, the church was blown down, leaving the village without a church. Church Hill is on the other side of the estuary from Alnmouth to walk around to. Where I took the picture is by the smallest of museums in the UK, I should imagine. Ferryman's Hut in Alnmouth.

A lovely walk across the beach and a wade through the tidal River.
Rebecca D — Google review
Good view of the Alnmouth beach it’s steep hill but worth it for the view at the end
Rashee N — Google review
Only 50 yards as the crow flies from Alnmouth beach, but might as well be on another planet: the inaccessibility makes for a very peaceful visit as few bother to make the walk to it.
The H — Google review
You really need to go here and walk up to the cross to a fantastic view across the estuary to Alnmouth. Best view of one of the most beautiful seaside villages in the country.
Paul B — Google review
Wait for low tide and you can walk across the river. Then climb up to the top. ,( bit strenuous climb) You get a great view of Alnmouth and the estuary
Lee C — Google review
Great place for a walk through the dunes and along the beach.
Graham T — Google review
Church Hill was much bigger prior to the Christmas day storm of 1806, which changed the course of the river Aln. Circumstantial evidence points to this being the place where St Cuthbert, the greatest of all northern saints, was created bishop of Lindisfarne at a synod in 684. Today, you can visit this place by walking a short distance from a nearby car park, or taking an invigorating 5.5 mile round walk from Warkworth dunes picnic site (OS grid reference NU255064)

Tenantry Column is a fascinating monument located in a small park, just a short walk from Coach House B & B. The column offers great views of Barter Books and the town, and is adorned with four stone lions at its base. This old structure predates Nelson's column, making it an intriguing historical site to explore. Visitors can enjoy the serene surroundings and marvel at this impressive piece of architecture during their visit.
Just a statue on a column.. but not enough time.. to read up on it

Interesting monument set in a nice small park with views over towards Barter Books and into the Town. My little girl was fascinated by the four stone Lions at the base of the column.

Looks like you can go up in, but it’s all locked up. So it’s just a column to look at.

Hulne Priory, located in Hulne Park, is a historic site that was once part of the hunting grounds of the Percy family and associated with Alnwick Castle. The park offers extensive parkland, impressive priory remains, and two bridges. Visitors can enjoy three circular walking routes ranging from 4 to 6 miles.
Peaceful slice of the countryside. No parking anywhere near. It's about 2.5km walk to get to it from park entrance. Easy walking. Cinder track or grass track or road. Some wonderful trees. Filmed Robin Hood prince of thieves at Hulne Priory. It was Maid Marion's place. Access to the park 11am to 4pm. No refreshments. No toilets. Great waymarking. Lots 9f lovely picnic spots. No dogs allowed no bikes and no cars. Free to walk round.
Jackie R — Google review
It's been a lovely afternoons walk. Red hot in the sun. Hulne priory is worth going to see. It was very quiet, apart from mother bird guarding her eggs as farther bird was keeping a close eye on what was going on. Two eggs in the nest which she had sat back on before we left. Beautiful grounds and loads to see.
SDTate T — Google review
Lovely park to take a walk in. Lots of options for walks - long and short. All have great scenery. The Priory is a delightful spot, perfect for a lunch outing. We brought our sandwiches and made a full afternoon of it. There are many story-boards around that will give a sense of the history surrounding the structures.

Lovely walk through Hulne Park following the red route to Hulne Priory. Was used as film set location for Robin Hood Prince of Thieves with Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman. It also doubled as Kirklees Priory(?) in the iconic 1980s series Robin of Sherwood. Was very lucky to have a look around the priory remains. Hulne Park is usually open from 11am till dusk. No dogs or cyclists allowed. Main entrance is opposite Alnwick parish church along wide drive.

Beautiful church that is still used for worship. The doors are open to visitors passing through. There are information boards about Edlingham Castle that is located close to the church. There is also an interesting book with local history and tales.
Melanie H — Google review
Very pretty and historic church, still used for worship and well worth a visit, as is the adjacent castle. Was surprised to see a sandstone block pulpit with iron railings in such an old building. Looked as though someone had used the leftovers from their building project! With so many churches closing, it should have been relatively easy to find one more in keeping with the rest of the building.
Dorothy G — Google review
Absolutely love this place and it's next to my favourite castle ruins
Damien B — Google review
Set in a lovely spot, beside a burn and the ruins of Eldingham Castle, stands a fantastic small Saxon church, dating from the earliest period of 740AD The main stone church dates from the Norman period with additional work from the 12th century Suprisingly, the village was much larger than today, however, you won't be disappointed Bonus is the church is usually open most days and parking available for about 5 cars
Mathew B — Google review
Beautiful old church next to Edlingham castle. Lots of history. Still in use.
B M — Google review
Lovely little church we ventured into when visiting Edlingham castle. Be sure to sign the book and leave a donation. This place costs £750 to maintain a week. It was a little calm and quiet place set in beautiful countryside.
Zoe G — Google review
Now, this is a church not far of the beaten track, not large on size. However, it has a powerful history. I was surprised at the number of people that visited it on the short time I was there, also the age group really surprised me. After saying that it history is not something you find in all old churches. So it makes it curious to both old and young people.
Cliff C — Google review
Lovely church, sadly closed to COVID19 but great to look at when visiting the nearby castle.

The impressive Shilbottle Tower is an enchanting ancient dwelling that incorporates a fortified Pele Tower from the 15th century. Once serving as a vicarage, this remarkable edifice stands proudly and is visible from the nearby church. Although it now functions as a private residence, in pre-COVID times the generous residents would generously open their garden to the public for charitable causes.
Interesting Pele tower, activities for children, check details first, only on at specific times, garden is beautiful and well maintained with enthusiastic staff, again check details only open at specific times

Beautiful Old House with Pele Tower. This lovely ?C house incorporates a 15C defensive Pele Tower. It used to be a vicarage. It can be seen from the church but is a private house. Pre- COVID the residents used to open up their garden to the public for charity.

We were looking for a piece of art to commemorate our trip and engagement. We’d never bought art before and found the idea quite intimidating. We went in and there was a friendly regular recommending the coffee- we sat had a coffee and talked to Samantha. She was so friendly and help and we ended walking away with a piece of art we will love forever! Would recommend a visit and the coffee!
