We stopped here on a weekday: around noon, on a Tuesday, mid August. The place is picturesque and a must do photo stop. Unfortunately it was soooo crowded that we didn’t have a chance to go through the museum or explore many stories of each windmill .. I do recommend the visit. But if you have a chance plane it when it is not so busy (maybe early morning would do as well)…
Saska Z — Google review
The museum here is great — it tells the story of Dutch history and culture in such an interesting way. I visited with my family, and we had a wonderful time! The weather was sunny, which made it even more enjoyable to explore the area, learn about history, and stop for some ice cream and cheese tasting. There are also plenty of souvenir shops around. You can reach Zaanse Schans easily by taking Bus 800 from Amsterdam Centraal, which is actually closer and more convenient than the train. Highly recommended for a family trip! 🇳🇱🌤️🧀

It's a nice place to take a leisurely stroll and admire traditional windmills. The numerous ducks roam freely, and the wooden shoe shop is a sight to behold. However, paying 16 euros for the museum admission leaves you wanting more. A 5 euro budget isn't a bad deal. It's a tourist attraction similar to South Korea's Sorae Port.
Benjamin K — Google review
A historic museum featuring the industrial side of Zaans through the last couple centuries. Super fun museum of the cookie and chocolate maker as well. If you are not using an inclusive card, such as the I Amsterdam card then I would recommend paying for the Wooden Saw mill over the other mills as they have a working saw mill with a excellently presented history. The paint mill comes a close second as you can climb up to the windmill sail level and they explain the ink production well. The ice cream available in one of the small shops was excellent for a soft serve style. Whilst there was no wait, it was busy.

Zaanse Schans is an incredible place to experience Dutch history and culture all in one spot — a must-visit if you're anywhere near Amsterdam! I started off at the Zaans Museum, which is a great intro to the area’s rich industrial and cultural past. You can buy an all-in-one pass there that gives you access to all the windmills, the windmill museum, and various other attractions around the park — definitely worth it. There’s so much to see and do. The walk around the park is beautiful, and you really get a feel for what life was like in the Netherlands centuries ago. You’ll find several charming restaurants, and one bakery in particular stands out — they serve these unbelievably good cinnamon apple pastries. Honestly, I could have eaten five of them, but I managed to hold back and only have one (no regrets, though). Along the way, there are lots of interesting stops — including a clock museum and plenty of little workshops and displays that show traditional crafts and trades. I learned that the idea of gathering the windmills here began over 20 years ago, and they’ve continued to expand and improve it ever since. It's clearly a labor of love and pride. One unique highlight: while walking along the path to one of the windmills, I came across a man selling fresh orange juice — perfect for a hot June day. It was cold, fresh, and incredibly refreshing. Highly recommend grabbing a bottle if you see him. Back at the Zaans Museum, they’ve got a lovely little café where I stopped for a quick espresso to recharge. I also tried their apple pie, which was surprisingly good — classic Dutch and just sweet enough. Pro tip: Get there early! The parking fills up fast, and the area gets pretty warm and busy as the day goes on. Morning is the best time to enjoy the peacefulness and take your time exploring. And yes — there are tons of souvenir opportunities if you're looking to bring something home - especially cheese wheels. They have a cheese store where you can taste the different cheeses too. Overall, Zaanse Schans was one of the highlights of my trip. A full day here is well worth it — fun, educational, and delicious all at once!

Step into the past at Zaanse Schans, a charming windmill village on the banks of the Zaan River. This open-air museum is free to enter and offers a glimpse into the golden age of the Dutch industry with working windmills, green wooden houses, craft shops, and historic trades. While entry to the village is free, note that: Some windmills and museums charge admission (tickets sold individually at each location). I believe that entry is also free with a Museum Card or I Amsterdam Card. Parking fees apply. Dogs are welcome on a leash, but I've learned that they're not allowed inside certain museums. What to Expect: A picturesque and authentic Dutch setting. Live demonstrations of traditional crafts. A glimpse into Western Europe’s first industrial zone. A popular tourist spot – it gets busy, especially midday with tour groups and families. Pro tip: Arrive early or later in the afternoon to avoid the largest crowds.

Farms
Cheese Farm "Catharina Hoeve" by Henri Willig is a 17th-century replica farm located in Zaandam, Netherlands. The farm offers free demonstrations of the cheese-making process by staff dressed in traditional costumes. Visitors can taste a variety of cheeses, including Edam, Gouda, goat, sheep, and nettle cheeses. The picturesque setting along the canal with a historic windmill creates an ideal backdrop for photography.
We had the pleasure of visiting a cheese farm in Zaandam as part of our group tour, and I’m so glad it was included in our itinerary. The experience was both educational and enjoyable from start to finish. Our visit began with an engaging introduction to the history and traditional process of cheese-making in the Netherlands. It was fascinating to learn how cheese was discovered and how it continues to be produced using age-old techniques. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about their craft. After the short presentation, we were invited to sample a wide variety of cheeses in their shop—and let me tell you, every single one was delicious! I'm not even a huge cheese person, but I found myself wanting to bring everything home. If only I could have packed it all in my suitcase and brought it back to the U.S.! Each flavor was rich and distinct, and the quality was undeniably top-notch. We also picked up some adorable souvenirs to take home and share with friends and coworkers. The gift shop was well-stocked with cute, authentic items that captured the charm of the place. If you’re planning a trip to the Netherlands, I highly recommend adding this cheese farm in Zaandam to your itinerary. It’s a delightful stop that offers a taste of Dutch culture—literally and figuratively!

We were pleasantly impressed by this cheese farm! 🧀 The variety of cheeses is absolutely incredible — it’s hard to choose because everything looks so good! We especially loved that you can taste so many different kinds before buying — it’s both convenient and fun. Another great idea is that you can buy cheese either individually or in beautifully prepared gift sets. They look stylish and original — a perfect gift option. The cheese is truly delicious, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the farm itself leaves a wonderful impression. We’ll definitely be back! 👌✨

So many cheesy options! Cheese is everywhere. You walk through an old museum like exhibit to view how cheese was/ is made on the farms. Aside from cheese this is a fun souvenir shop as well. There are so many options for cheese gift packs. There are also multiple stations for cheese tastings. Be sure to grab an ice cream cone outside through the shop window. It's the thickest creamiest I've ever had and with a beautiful background of Windmills

The Cheese Farm Catharina Hoeve is such a charming and delightful place! We really enjoyed tasting the delicious variety of cheeses — each one was so fresh and full of flavor. The atmosphere is cozy and authentic, and watching how the cheese is made adds a special touch to the experience. Definitely a place worth visiting in Zaanse Schans!
Mariam — Google review
Nice place to test variety of cheeses. But was not nice to see is lot of people just keep on tasting samples with no intention of buying or taste exploring. This is NOT a restaurant folks. They also give an workshop on how cheese is produced but you have to be on time as it is often full.
Nirupam B — Google review
The demonstration was cool, make sure you try all the cheese options you will find some types of cheese you won’t find any where else like the coconut cheese. They have many cheese for us to try, crackers, and dipping sauce. Prices are a bit high if you decided to buy cheese. But in my opinion it is totally worth it.
Passant W — Google review
Am a cheese lover so the whole experience is remarkable! Joined the explanation on how cheese is made and bought some back as well...Do not miss out the multiple cheese tasting stations too!
Jo J — Google review
Beautiful place. The whole Zaanse Schans is a magical place and it's a must if you visit Amsterdam. The Cheese Farm is also great, you learn a bit of their history, can take a funny picture with the typical shoes and the cheese, and then access the cheese shop where you can taste different kinds of cheese and buy for you or for taking gifts. They have goats, sheep, ducks and swans outside, and the kids love it.

Zaan, located in the Zaan River region, is home to well-preserved historic buildings that were moved from across the area. These structures offer a glimpse into Western Europe's oldest industrial area, known for producing various commodities in its prime. Visitors can explore Dutch windmills and take a cruise along the picturesque Zaan River on clear sunny days. The area also offers opportunities to taste delicious chocolate milk from one of the windmills and sample cheese from a local factory.
If you have to experience real Dutch beauty, windmills, cheese, clogs. Zaanse Schans is the best place providing a great walk along zaan river and small museums with Dutch culture.

One of the best place to explore the Dutch windmills. This is a major touristic attraction. Foggy Mornings are totally different and best time to take pictures. Choco milk from of the the windmills is delicious and you must taste cheese from cheese factory too. You can also explore the wooden cloves factory. May be you can visit Zaandam also, it’s very beautiful city in just one train stop towards Amsterdam

Paintmill De Kat, originally built in 1646 as an oil mill, was later reconstructed and relocated to its current position. Visitors can explore the interior of this windmill by climbing steep stairs to reach the highest balcony for a panoramic view. The windmill is still operational and serves a practical purpose by producing pigment for paint. It offers an intriguing experience showcasing how mills were involved in paint production.
If you enjoy history, you will enjoy Mill De Kat, seeing this impressive design and construction still functioning today. I loved seeing and hearing the mill in action with its heavy mill stones turning mineral stone to powder for classical paints. The modular construction of the huge gears and how the mill head could be turned by hand to catch the best wind by the windmill blades was inspiring. Also has cats 🐈 on it.
Hug D — Google review
This windmill village has been preserved for tourism. Although the windmills were small in size, it was great to see them in operation and spinning. You do have to pay an entrance fee and a fee to use the restrooms, but it's definitely worth seeing at least once.
Bee K — Google review
Worth a Visit! The windmills and the place are stunningly beautiful! We visited as a group of three and decided to skip the guided tours and hop-on hop-off options—they seemed overpriced and focused too much on things like cheese factories and wooden shoes. Getting there from Amsterdam is actually very simple by public transport. Take a train to Zaandijk, then hop on a Sprinter (they run about every 20 minutes), which brings you close to the village and saves you the 25-minute walk. Once in the village, there’s a small boat that runs back and forth to the windmills for just €1–2 per person—a convenient and fun way to cross. You can also take Uber to Zaanse Schans and back to Amsterdam, which cost around €30 one way—still cheaper and more flexible than the tours. The best part about planning your own visit is the flexibility: you can spend just an hour or two exploring instead of being locked into a 6–8 hour guided trip. Overall, definitely worth visiting—especially if you do it on your own!
Rajesh N — Google review
I love this place. Windmills that still work takes you to old times. There's also a small demonstration of how to make the traditional Dutch wooden shoes. I was surprised when they mentioned that Rembrant used to buy his pigments and paints in this town. This is one of my favorite places, quiet and full of history.
Jorge G — Google review
Beautiful windmills of Zaanse Schans. You can also take guided tours to see how oil is produced from these mills. Overall it's a beautiful place specially during sunset (check the pictures and videos)
Dipesh P — Google review
This place is fantastic. Worth the tour bus ride. Tickets can be purchased at the train station Lots of history of how the windmills work & history of the area. Restaurants in the area on the tour. How they make the cheers and taste testing. Best cheers I’ve tasted yet. Check them out. Just an FYI to all tourists. All restrooms (toilets ) have a small fee so come prepared with spare change. Enjoy!
Steve G — Google review
Really cool historic windmill still operating. There is a nice tour to learn about this and the few other remaining windmills in Holland. When we went the windmill was operating and making chalk. There is a steep set of stairs that lead to the upper level where you can see how the windmill blades turn the wooden gears and ultimately the granite stones used to crush the chalk.
Joe L — Google review
This was the highlight of my entire trip to Holland! The windmill is absolutely amazing and you can go inside (6 euros or free with IAmsterdam card). You can watch the paint-making process in real time. The chalk is crushed by two massive stones in a process that is authentic to the time period. You can also purchase the paint in the gift shop. Such a unique and beautiful experience.

Czaar Peterhuisje, also known as Tsar Peter House, is a historic wooden house in Zaandam, the Netherlands. Built in 1632, it holds significant memories and artifacts from when Peter the Great stayed there for eight days in 1697. The area was renowned for shipbuilding at the time, and the house itself was constructed from repurposed ship materials. Visitors can explore paintings and memorabilia related to Peter the Great's visit.
Czar Peterhouse in Zaandam is a fascinating historical site dedicated to Peter the Great’s stay in the Netherlands. The museum captures the essence of his visit with detailed exhibits and period furnishings. It’s intriguing to see, the state of the house is very crooked - which makes it even more interesting.
Ruben K — Google review
Just go and visit it! Peter the Great was a huge figure of his time. Fantastic piece of history.
Andreea I — Google review
The Tsar Peter House is known as one of the oldest wooden house in the Netherlands, preserved within a concrete structure for protection. It’s located quite a distance from the main part of Zaandam, making it a bit of a trip to get to. The museum staff are friendly and welcoming, and there’s a small souvenir corner available at the entrance. The entrance fee is slightly on the higher side, especially when compared to the modest number of exhibits inside. The wooden house itself is about the size of three small rooms, and visitors are not allowed to access the attic. Inside, there are a few displays related to Tsar Peter the Great and the Netherlands-Russia connection. There’s also a small garden area next to the house where you can take a peaceful walk. If you have extra time while visiting Zaandam and would like to know a little story behind a statue of a man making a wooden boat at the town-square, it might be worth a quick stop, especially if you're interested in Dutch-Russian historical ties. However, if your schedule is tight, in my opinion, it’s not a must-see and can be skipped without much regret — unless you're a Russian visitor with an interest to Tsar Peter’s story.
Thanapob B — Google review
A must see, the history behind is absolutely interesting, make sure you book or pay a guide to get the story behind this particular place. The only thing missing is the directions to get there, it's a bit confusing to get the right direction, maybe like in all Hollande!! Really weird!
Lar K — Google review
Excellent little museum. Very well organized and maintained. On request you can have also book in advance a very good guided tour.
Roberto F — Google review
One of the best experiences I’ve had in Amsterdam as I could get in touch with a history of tee countries through ages. The staff is super friendly and there are everything on three languages so you can get all the info you may need.

Amazing experience! This is one of the oldest museums in Netherlands, house is nearly 400 years old. Take a short tour for extra €5 to learn more about Peter I visit and visitors of the house throughout the centuries and find a Napoleon signature on one of the walls. Museum is very well preserved.
Olga V — Google review
It is small but really cute . Entrance is quite cheap at 5€. It is said to be the oldest still existing wooden house in the Netherlands. Czar Peter the Great stayed here for 8 days to study shipbuilding . It takes about 15 or 20 mins to walk around in it and I recommend it.

Het Jonge Schaap, also known as the young sheep, is a remarkable active windmill located at Zaanse Schans. This wooden sawmill was originally built in the 1600s and was reconstructed to its original plans after being demolished during World War II. The mill, which opened in 2007, operates using wind energy to cut logs and provides wood for the surrounding area.
Having walked past a few other windmills we decided to pay and go in this one, selected purely at random, but what a great choice. Our visit was massively enhanced by the volunteers who operate this wood cutting mill as they explained everything and even let us have a go at pulling back against the rope. The children loved it. I loved it, cracking view too. Must have been in there at least half an hour chatting away. The other mills in the area are a great mix, from flour, paint dye, oils etc. However the wood sawing is probably the one where you get to see the inner workings the best.

Classic Dutch history featuring windmills and love of mother nature. It’s the beautifully preserved nature that’s the biggest charm of this city. The wooden houses and beautiful experience walk around and spot livestocks chilling and eating their food and cheese shops.
Hug D — Google review
We really enjoyed seeing this windmill. The video of it being rebuilt is fascinating and the volunteer we spoke to was so engaging and showed us how it all works. We hope he gets to saw his fallen tree into a work bench when it's good and ready
Jules A — Google review
I had the most wonderful time at this saw mill! I purchased the Zaanse Schans ticket in advance that included free visit to two windmills and I recommend you to visit this particular mill. The windmillers were helpful and I met Martijn who was just so nice in explaining how the windmill worked including the rich history behind it..totally changed the way I look at windmills in Holland afterward!
Sheila A — Google review
Beautiful windmill, used for sawing, the windmill mechanism enables the sawing blades to oscillate up and down, also pushing the wooden trunk as it cuts. Simply amazed to be able to see how people on the past relied on such technology and design to be effective and efficient. Need to pay to enter.

Classic Dutch vibes featuring windmills and love of mother nature. But it’s not JUST the windmills. It’s the beautifully preserved nature that’s the biggest charm of this city. You can walk around and spot livestocks chilling and eating their food. You don’t see that many automobiles if any. And just being here basically heals your soul.

Totally worth its price! Interesting and grabbing video "how it's made" can be watched at the entrance. The visiting of real and working mill a must have if you are there. Recommended to buy combined ticket to visit "Cat" mill as well.

One of the active windmills which allow visitors. This one is the sawmill. Spent like an hour here watching them load the timber, trimming & then cutting it. All with the use of the windmill. Quite a marvel. Friendly owner & staff who take time to explain the process. There is also a small museum below. Am happy I walked in. There is a small fee of 5 Euros but definitely worth it. A must do when visiting Zaanse Schans. Suitable for both kids & adults.

Brouwerij Hoop is a must-visit location in Zaanse Schans, offering a picturesque setting with plenty of seating and a warm patio equipped with heaters. The knowledgeable servers provide excellent service, and the delicious beer and food options, such as steak and ribs, make for a delightful experience. Additionally, the outdoor seating area and the concept create a fantastic ambiance. Visitors can also enjoy a beer draft taster flight and beer cheese fondue while taking in the scenic surroundings.
Really lovely spot. Food’s good and seems well cooked. Not exactly cheap, but fair enough for Amsterdam. Service was great — only downside, they charged us without bringing the bill, just tapped the card and that was that! I mean, sure, trust is nice, but a little receipt wouldn’t hurt, would it?

No smoking in their outdoor area is an automatic 5/5 for us. Love the vibe and the staff are great! We had the dark beer flights, which I highly recommend, and the food was fresh and delicious. Best bread from a restaurant I’ve had that came with the croquettes.

Nice food, nice beer, nice location and very good service. It was quite easy to get seats on a Monday afternoon. Our group of 9 enjoyed ourselves over a meal. Thank you so much! Be sure to check it out if you are around the area.

I recently stopped by Brouwerij Hoop for dinner whilst in Amsterdam and had a fantastic experience. From the moment I walked in, the service was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere in the restaurant was lively and welcoming. For the main course, I had the steak, which was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious. I followed that with the tiramisu for dessert, which was also great. The drinks were varied, including their amazing selection of beers. I'd highly recommend a visit to Brouwerij Hoop if you're in the area. It's a great spot with a great atmosphere, brilliant food, and top-notch service.

Good beer, tasty food. Came here on a Thursday night after arriving at our lodging. The brewery was pretty quiet with only a few groups. Servers were attentive and helped explain the menu. They have a kids meal that includes fries, a main, applesauce and a toy. Also they had a good lemonade selection for the non alcohol drinkers. Beer selection was good and was familiar for an American beer drinker. Beer is served in 1/4 or 1/2 liters sizes. Burger was the best I've had in a long time. Fries were amazing. Local appetizers were expensive and mainly fried. The burger quality is what pushed this review to 5 stars. Prices overall are reasonable for the area.

Very informative museum that provides historical progress of the windmills and the industrial revolution around the 1500s. The museum is in close proximity to many old windmills. Overall, a good experience.

An interesting small museum inside a wonderful winder area. The collection is varied but based primarily on clocks produced locally, with some extra information on tools, training and the history of timekeeping. The staff were engaging and helpful, and the place seemed to have things suitable for all ages.

Opened in 1976, this specialized museum explores the history of timekeeping and clockmaking as part of the Zaan region’s industrial and technological heritage. It features rare clocks, bell chimes, and factory timekeeping devices from the 17th to 20th centuries, highlighting the region’s tradition of precision craftsmanship and mechanical innovation.

This place is such an immersive place to go to! You must arrive here early as parking can get full in time. Parking opens early, I think we arrived at 8am and most of the shops open at 9. But, arriving early gives you time to stroll with no crowds. No entrance fee, but there are paid tickets to go up the windmills and to see. There are tons of shops and stalls, artists displaying their craft and vintage stalls. Managed to buy an authentic and used wooden shoes!! Lots of people in their ‘national or native’ clothes and I think we really have to appreciate them and give them a lil bit of something, to keep the tradition going. Musicians around and it’s such a lively place! Went up a windmill to see Dutch engineering. You can also ride a boat by the river. They have paid toilet of a euro and they accept debit card. I did not try my credit card. A must-see place! We parked here the whole day until 7pm. You can also easily reach Amsterdam by bus, and bus stop is just a few yards away, in front. Bus to and from amsterdam is also frequent, like every 5-10mins. Super accessible if you dont drive.

The Weavers House is a must-visit attraction at Zaanse Schans, offering a glimpse into the traditional textile industry of the region. This historic dwelling, originally built between 1722 and 1730, was once home to two large families and features five looms used for sailcloth weaving. Visitors can explore the intricate process of textile production and unravel the threads of history during their tour.
Cute little weaver museum. Not much to it in size. A brief history of the weavers in the area and how they produced materials such as ship sails. Staff were informative and friendly. Plenty of parking.

The Monet Atelier in Zaandam is a gallery that showcases the works of Claude Monet. The paintings are hung brightly and tastefully, with comfortable chairs and a quiet atmosphere that makes it a great place to appreciate Monet's work. There is also a video about the artist available for viewing, as well as books for readers to peruse. It is an excellent stop on any trip to Zaanse Schans, and is highly recommended by anyone visiting the area.

Monet's Atelier was the highlight of my trip to Zaandam! I have recommended it to all my Dutch friends, and have already planned a return visit to take my artist friend (he will LOVE it!). The owner is the best part of the museum. You can feel her passion for Monet and Zaandam alike. She explained everything so clearly and made me feel like I was visiting a friend's house and not a museum. I learned SO much! Fascinating! The museum is really well organized, the map with the view points of where Monet painted each piece is brilliant! The video is so informative! I can not say enough great things about this tiny museum! 10/10! A great recommendation to anyone going to Zaandam!

De Saense Lelie is a vibrant craft center that showcases the talents of various artisans, including Delft Blue artists, diamond cutters, jewelers, oil painters, and craftsmen specializing in the Assendelft style. Visitors can marvel at Amsterdam's impressive diamond collection and witness skilled goldsmiths setting diamonds in 18-carat gold. The shop not only offers a cultural experience but also provides insight into local history.
Western half of the building is De Saense Lelie (also includes the dessert shop). The eastern half is Royal Diamonds. Has a bunch of your typical souveniers. Other than a couple differences, its very similar to the other souvenier shops in the area. They do have stroopwaffel at the dessert shop. Can't really get the classic canal photo with the waffel, but there is a spot right opposite where you can pose with the windmills.

I tried my first authentic stroopwafel and it was mediocre. It was nothing really to brag about. Within the little shopping plaza near the windmills there is a fresh cheese store. All four coffees were great, all four stroopwaffels were dry with much less than standard syrup. At the price point, they need to be super delicious with enough syrup. Tourists who eat this, will for sure not want to try it at a market after trying this.

Tried stroopwafel for the first time. Gotta say… it’s probably not for me. I’m not really a fan of overly sweet treats, and this one leans on the sweeter side. The hot chocolate was so good!

Czaar Peter Monument, located in the middle of De Dam square, is a historical landmark dating back to 1909. It commemorates the visit of Russian Czar Peter to Zaandam in the 1600s, where he studied shipbuilding from Dutch masters. The monument was a gift from Czar Nicholas II and symbolizes Peter the Great's influence on Russian industrial development, particularly seen in the construction of Saint Petersburg.
We were looking for this statue. It’s a monument to Peter the Great, the Russian tsar, who spent half a year in Zaandam to hone his skills in building ships. After this trip he renovated his own country and built Saint Petersburg. He was a great man.

Located in a beautiful spot in Zaanse Schans, Restaurant De Kraai is a must-visit for those looking to try traditional Dutch pancakes. The restaurant offers a variety of options including sweet and savory pancakes, sandwiches, salads, soup, and pastries. Visitors can enjoy their meal in the lovely dining room or on the patio overlooking the picturesque surroundings. Additionally, the restaurant serves coffee/tea and beer from a local brewery.
Visited Restaurant De Kraai in Zaanse Schans during my trip and it was such a peaceful, authentic experience. The Dutch pancakes were freshly made — soft inside with a slight crisp edge — and served generously. Sitting near the window with a view of the windmills made it even more special. The atmosphere was warm and relaxed, with friendly staff and the comforting smell of freshly baked pancakes. It’s the perfect place to take a break and enjoy traditional Dutch food in a beautiful setting.

If you sit outdoors, the view is beautiful, you get to enjoy your meal overlooking the windmills. Their Dutch pancakes were delicious. We tried one savory and one sweet, and both were great, especially paired with a cup of Chocomel hot chocolate. Overall, a nice spot with great pancakes and a beautiful view, definitely worth a visit.

Huge restaurant in the heart of the Zaanse Schans with plenty tables. Nice place to have a light lunch/ snack and washroom break (only for guests). There’s a public pay washroom not far away but it costs euro 1/ visit by credit card and almost line up if you visit at the weekend. We ordered ham and cheese pancake which is not common in North America to see savoury pancake. The taste is like soft thin crust pizza which I enjoyed very much.
Hualing W — Google review
Self-service restaurant, with a nice big terrace. The selection of food is poor, only soups, sandwiches, and pancakes. Soup with bread costs 9€, so it is very overpriced. But it was tasty at least.

Warmest of welcomes. If you coming to see the windmills make sure you you make this stop a priority. Amazing pancakes and apple pie and cream. But it’s the warm welcome that makes us come back time after time
Lisa S — Google review
When visiting Zaanse Schans (windmills) we ate at Restaurant De Kraai. This was our first time eating Dutch pancakes and we found everything to be presented well and delicious tasting! Dutch pancakes are thinner than American ones but not as thin as a crepe. They can be sweet or savory. We had sweet ones. 😃 I had honey with whipped cream pancakes my son had, brandy, raisins and cream pancakes. I also had pumpkin soup. We walked past counters with trays and self-served our soup and drinks. At the register we ordered our pancakes and we were provided a beeper. We were there on a Friday afternoon, slightly past lunch time and didn't have a long wait for our pancakes! There was a cart by the door to place trays on when finished eating. We really enjoyed our visit and recommend eating there on your visit to Zaanse Schans.
Carlee C — Google review
A bit embarrassed that I've fallen for what in retrospect is pretty clearly a tourist trap. You get 10% discount with the museum pass and the building looks nice enough. The pancakes however, even at 10-15 EUR a piece, are an insult. Do yourself a favour and skip this one.

On my last visit I got completely disgusted by the hygiene of a short haired server. She was wearing gloves but that is absolutely pointless if she’s going to be picking/wiping her nose, wiping her face and handling cash without changing the gloves. The more disgusting part is that she then digs her whole hand into the ice cream containers in order to scoop, contaminating every flavor with her dirty gloves. The owner needs to be more diligent with hygiene training.

It is an oil windmill - when I was there they were using linseeds to make linseed oil and then they used the dried up linseed to turn it into cattle cake. I learnt how windmills worked there. It’s not free btw

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Must-visit windmill at Zaanse Schans – don’t miss this one! De Bonte Hen is a hidden gem at the far end of the windmill trail at Zaanse Schans—depending on which direction you start, this could be your final stop, and it’s absolutely worth making it to the end! Located right next to the ferry crossing, this windmill feels quieter and more peaceful than the ones closer to the entrance. I didn’t go inside this time, but the photos and videos of the interior look amazing, so definitely try to schedule your visit when it’s open. Just note that entry isn’t free, but it’s worth it to step inside a working oil mill—a rare sight in the Netherlands today. Pro tip: Arrive early or come late—the grounds are open all hours, and you’ll catch the best light with fewer crowds. You can also take the ferry to start at this less-visited end and work your way back. Built in 1693, De Bonte Hen is an incredible survivor, restored and still operational. It’s less visited than some of the others, but packed with charm and history. Whether you’re into history, photography, or authentic Dutch experiences, this one’s a must-see stop on your Zaanse Schans trip.

Zaanse Golf Club is a premier golf destination located to the east of the popular Zaanse Schans. The course features 18 challenging holes set amidst stunning natural scenery, offering a test for golfers of all levels. Wind plays a significant role throughout the course, while narrow fairways and strategic tee-offs add to the challenge. The presence of water around the course demands thoughtful play and careful management.
I played this golf course about four years ago, to come back and play was a joy. The last time I played here I was lucky to play with some members . I enjoyed it, plus the course is a thinking course you cannot just smash big drive you got water all around which gives the course a good defense. You have to play this with a lot of course management . And when you get to the greens they are fast but not too fast. So if you like good greens you will not be disappointed . The layout of the course made good use land to carve out a very good gold course that challenges all aspect of your game withou living you disappointed. A return next around to play is on the cards and the approach to play here is about thinking and good strategies and a good measure of respect to the course designer . I recommend a visit you will not be disappointed

Nice bar personnel however, weird course lay-out; in times crisis cross with other holes. Driving range way out of the route. information on tee box boards wrong and incomplete, no marshal. On a hot day of 35' no catering cart to provide at least water. Lots of bald area's on fairways indicating burns and poor maintenance of course. Old and shabby locker room and no towels. I did not feel welcomed. Shame. It seems that the course is up to a new management team.

Good, challenging course - especially when the weather is against you! Some interesting holes and definitely a course that rewards strategy over power, with a couple of nice risk / reward holes that will either make or break your score - hole 13 in particular. A word of warning that during the autumn / winter, balls can have a tendency to plug and disappear! We played yesterday (October) and there were a couple of instances where perfectly fine shots totally disappeared - frustrating but that's golf! It could well be different during spring / summer. As with any polder course in the Netherlands, there's plenty of water and we played on a particularly windy day, so you have to place a lot of trust in nature to blow you back on track! It's certainly a course you have to play a couple of times before you work out the best way to make a good score. Unfortunately the clubhouse was closed due to COVID-19 but the food was pretty good, from memory of a previous visit.

A day to remember. Rental clubs from hell, all clubs came with grafite shafts and shunky club heads. Most of the carry bags were also broken. Ad to that, that the greens were in terrible shape with a cut of like 5mm. The best thing of Zaanse golf club is that the restaurant served desent burgers.

(Translated by Google) Yesterday we played a tournament here with a large group of people. Everything was very well organised and the course has different faces. Several beautiful holes around the pond with many trees are very challenging. And then you walk into the meadow with views over the surrounding landscape. You tee off several holes from the dike. The service in the restaurant is friendly, but it is not possible to create a receipt. Moreover, you have to go inside to order, after which it is brought to you. Very annoying if you are with a large group and want to have a drink for a while.

(Translated by Google) Quality leaves much to be desired. Beautiful driving range with trackman. Only that is of little use if you are offered heavily worn DR balls that are cast-offs from the Dutch, among others. It is also impossible to hit off with a driver because there is no possibility to stick a tee in the mat. Difficult to understand. The tee boxes and course are poorly maintained with bald spots, weeds and a lot of divots and not replaced sods. When returning around 16:30 the catering is closed.... There are better courses in the area where there is more love for maintenance, quality and service.

Nestled within the enchanting Zaanse Schans, the Cooperage is a charming little museum that offers visitors a glimpse into the fascinating world of artisan wooden barrel-making. This delightful stop not only showcases traditional craftsmanship but also highlights its significance during the Dutch Golden Age. As you wander through this friendly establishment, you'll encounter historical tools and accessories used in barrel production, making it an educational experience as well.
Very friendly staff, it's not a big museum but worth a visit.

This review covers the whole of the Zaanse Schans. I didn't like coming here one bit. This is a restored little Dutch village, with the small houses and gardens in which people once lived. The various different shops that cater to villagers are still standing strong as a tourist attraction. Sadly, I didn't enjoy this place. First of all, the place reeks! Thanks to the factories lining up the coast of the river, you can't get away from the horrible smell. It doea get better once you wander deeper in the vilage, but it was neverthelesa the downfall of Zaanse Schans. Plus, it honestly never felt authentic. I would highly recommend visiting the reap life small Dutch village by the name of Alkmaar not very far away. We've put an entire morning aside dedicated to visiting this place. Out of a six day trip, you'd understand how disappointed I was upon coming here. The only highlight of this day was strolling down the actual town of Zandaam before catching the train back to the Amsterdam Centraal.

You can taste a variety of different flavored cheeses here, I liked the ones with garlic and goat the most, and the one with pepper was also good. Zaanse Schans Windmill is a captivating destination that beautifully encapsulates the essence of traditional Dutch life. Just a short 15-minute drive from Amsterdam, or easily accessible by train or bus, this charming village offers visitors a glimpse into the past amidst stunning natural scenery. As you stroll through the area, you'll encounter delightful wildlife like rabbits and swans while enjoying picturesque views of colorful houses and serene canals.
We arrived at the Zaandam Windmill around 5 pm after slow traffic, and the site was already closed. Luckily, we were still able to enter briefly and take photos for about 15 minutes. The windmill itself is striking, and the surrounding colorful houses and canals make the area incredibly photogenic. Even in that short time, you can really feel the Dutch heritage, and it’s a memorable spot for photography.

visit to Zaanse Schans felt like stepping into a living postcard—where time slows, windmills whisper old Dutch secrets, and wooden houses wear their history like proud badges. 🌿 The air carried a sweet scent of cocoa and freshly baked waffles, while the quiet creak of spinning windmills added a rustic charm. Walking along the water, I could see craftsmen shaping clogs, cheese makers offering warm smiles (and irresistible samples!), and green wooden houses reflecting gracefully on calm canals.

Great spectacle. Always had the desire to view it as the picture had become so popular. Wanted to see an old windmill and wanted to see it working. What I saw at Zaans Schans really surprised me. So many old windmills preserved carefully and beautifully. The sight of them from a distance is spectacular. The location is also very nice, with vast waterfields and grassy edges where rare waterbirds rest. As a birder, I was very happy since I got not less than twelve new species of birds here.

As a free tourist attraction, Zaanse Schans is very good place to explore. There is ticket only if you want to go inside the windmill. Apart from this, there is Clog making demo, Dutch cheese tasting, exploring the iconic windmills and photo opportunities to capture the overall Dutch ambience. I really enjoyed the clog demo how using pre-set machines clogs were made. Windmills were fun too. Overall a good place to spend half day.

Visited Zaanse Schans today and absolutely loved the experience! The place feels like stepping into a living postcard — traditional windmills, charming wooden houses, and stunning views everywhere. The area is very well-maintained and perfect for a relaxed walk, photography, and learning about Dutch culture and craftsmanship. There are nice small museums, cheese shops, and demonstrations that make the visit even more enjoyable. It’s easily reachable from Amsterdam and a great half-day trip. Highly recommend visiting if you want to experience the classic Dutch countryside vibe! 🌿🌬️🇳🇱

Took the train if you dont have a car or just visiting and you will be there in no time.

Beautiful day exploring the windmills, lovely scenery to take some great photos of these vintage windmills that have been cared for over the years, we walked around for over an hour here, lots of tourists and buses of people being dropped off here. There is a small shop that you can purchase chocolate, hot chocolate and candies and souvenirs etc, also a cute vintage store with expensive items you can purchase. There’s also a museum about clogs which was interesting and you can buy some clogs for yourself and other tourist treasures. I also enjoyed having some photos taken in the oversized wooden clogs. So you know: There are washrooms available. You can go into some of the windmills but it costs money to do so. Nice place, I’d go again.
Anne B — Google review
Although many people find it unnecessary, we liked it. There are long walking paths with windmills scattered along the way, and it’s a very peaceful place. One to two hours is enough to visit. The hot chocolate shop is a bit unnecessary, but we went in to warm up and it turned out to be fun.

Nestled in the heart of Zaanse Schans, the Bakery Museum "The Gecroonde Duyvekater" is a charming slice of history dating back to 1658. This delightful museum showcases an impressive array of antique baking tools, including cake molds and a vintage standing mixer, alongside an authentic bread oven that adds to its nostalgic charm. The museum's name pays homage to the Duivekater, a beloved local sweet bread that visitors can savor fresh from the oven.
A lovely bakery museum with a cottagecore cafe right in the heart of Zaanse Schans. We warmed ourselves up with tea and waffles inside while it was so cold outside! It was so comforting! The Dutch windmills are more than just postcard views – they were once real engines of innovation. Some produced natural pigments for dyes and paints, while others managed the country’s constant battle with water by pumping it away from the lowlands. Each had its own specialty, almost like an early industrial park. Parking is a flat €15 now, but it’s worth it for the chance to see how these iconic giants shaped Dutch life for centuries.

The windmill village was very beautiful. It was not very big, so it was a good walking course with children. My family did not visit places like the windmill or the cheese museum, but I think it was very worthwhile to walk around the village. There were a lot of tourists because it was the weekend, and the parking lot was full, so we went to the next village and came back, and there was a parking lot available, so we were able to park. The parking fee was 15 euros without fail. It was a bit expensive, but I will never forget the walking course through the well-maintained windmill village with my children.

(Translated by Google) In February 2023 I visited the Hembrug site with two friends. There is the museum, which is two converted transformer houses with objects and information that you can view from outside. It is about the bridge, but also about the factory in which firearms, artillery and ammunition were produced. Almost all the old buildings are still there, some of which have now been given a new purpose and have become space for artists and small businesses, for example. Each building has a QR code on the facade that allows you to view a web page via your phone with some brief information about what the building was previously used for. So you don't necessarily need a guide, but you can walk from building to building yourself and learn about the history of this site. You can also see a large piece of the turning mechanism of the old bridge. For us it was worthwhile to take a leisurely look around, discuss the architecture and read about the site's past.

(Translated by Google) On the territory of Zaanse Schans there is an interesting Barrel Workshop, which will help you plunge into history. Guests are presented with a fully equipped, authentic S.R. barrel production workshop. Tiemstra & Sons from Ostzaan. Jaap Timstra left the workshop after his death in 1999. The barrel workshop was then moved to the building that previously housed the Schuitemakerij brewery. It was located in Rustenburg in Zaandam, but was demolished in 1964 and its contents were put into storage. In 1967, the warehouse was reconstructed in Zaanse Schans, and now everyone who is interested in the history of cooperage has the opportunity to see the workshop. Cooperation was widespread. In the 21st century, the profession of cooper is still necessary, as real wooden barrels are required in the production of wine and cognac. The cooper, using an ax and other carpentry tools (which you can see in large quantities in this workshop), fits the rivets of the barrel one to another, planes them, makes the folds (zautori) with a rebate, drives the bottom into them and ties everything together with wooden or iron hoops. Cooperation is a special craft, because making a wooden barrel is not easy: it must be able to store and transport many different things. Whether it's flour, spices, oils or water, nothing should leak out. Not to mention gunpowder... Very atmospheric place!

(Translated by Google) Given that the place absolutely must be visited, it is located about 15/20 minutes by train from Amsterdam and you can easily avoid buying pre-made trips, buy the train ticket, it costs very little and then do everything on your own avoiding the crowds of organized groups . As soon as you cross the drawbridge you will find yourself immersed in a wonderful, fairy-tale atmosphere! Furthermore, here you can find various shops where you can watch (for free) how wooden clogs, cheeses (tasting is a must) and other typical products were made and still are made today. Obviously the shops are very touristy, but it's the whole environment that surrounds them that is unforgettable, plus some tidbits on how the production took place is always pleasant.

It was a great experience. If someone had told me in India that one ccould make a beautiful shoe out of wood, I would readily have ignored it as a lie. One has to see the wooden shoe factory in Zaanse Schans, Netherlands, to believe it. We spent quite some time there and still relish those moments. A lady described the process of making wooden shoe. We were shown all the different varieties of shoes on display, including the very costly special ones. The price is moderate when one considers the labour that goes into the making of each shoe.

It's a great souvenir shop with plain shoes and then walls of painted shoes in all sizes. Be sure to watch the presentation on how the shoes are made... it's fascinating. Also, you must do the touristy thing and take photos outside of the shop in the huge wooden shoes and the wooden shoes in a heart shape on the wall.

Bought a day trip tour. The tour took us to this windmill village of Zaanse Schans. This particular windmill is still operating. It is used to make oil from peanuts. You will be amazed of the windmill mechanism inside. You can go up to the second floor for nice photos. There is a museum nearby. Buy a cup of coffee so you can use the toilet. It would be nice to have a little mpre time to check out other tourist shops as well.

Windmill De Zoeker is a sole-ful experience! 😊 This iconic destination is not only famous for its historic windmill and picturesque setting, but also for its amazing shoe collection! I've heard it's a shoe-lover's paradise, and I can see why. The rich history, beautifully maintained architecture, and of course, the incredible shoes make it a must-visit spot. Highly recommend adding Windmill De Zoeker to your itinerary - it's a 'shoe-in' for a great time! 👣👌

nteresting windmills and farms are all great, great for tourists walking around the village, the cheese house, where you are able to try a variety of dairy products

Gave 3 stars because the nice buildings but there are too many visitors (I guess every 2nd tourists being transferred here from Amsterdam by big buses) so you just can not walk, can not see, can not access. We escaped after 20 minutes. :-/

It is a very beautiful place where you can see part of the history of the place. Each mill was like a small industry, each with its own role ... cutting wood, making colors with the power of the wind. The parking lot seemed quite spacious. Admission to the complex is not paid. It is paid only at the entrance inside the mills. There are souvenir shops, food, drinks. You can taste and buy local cheeses. It is a bit crowded but well worth a visit. It is very close to Amsterdam from where organized tours are made to visit the place

Interesting experience for a family, it is good they are still operating the windmill, you can still taste past medieval years experience, Mill owner was really kind person who knows his windmill very well, after a 15 minutes of demonstration both English and Spanish he will let you visit second floor of the windmill which you can see gears and other mechanics of windmill also you can take a pictures in balcony area. Note: Stairs are too steep not might be hard for old people or families with small kids to climb but definitely worth the view.

Exploring the Dutch Delight of Zaanse Schans When it comes to picturesque and quintessentially Dutch destinations, Zaanse Schans stands out as a charming open-air museum that showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Netherlands. Located just a short distance from Amsterdam, this unique village offers visitors a delightful glimpse into the country's past, with its well-preserved windmills, traditional wooden houses, and vibrant crafts. Upon arrival at Zaanse Schans, it's easy to feel as though you've stepped back in time. The village is a living testament to the industrial revolution that took place in the 18th and 19th centuries, with its iconic windmills serving as symbols of the area's once-thriving milling industry. As you stroll along the cobbled streets, you'll encounter a variety of working windmills, each with its own distinct purpose, from grinding spices and cocoa to sawing timber. One of the highlights of any visit to Zaanse Schans is the opportunity to step inside these historical windmills. The friendly and knowledgeable millers are more than happy to share their expertise and give you a glimpse into the fascinating world of milling. Witness the creaking wooden machinery in action and learn about the traditional methods that were employed to harness the power of the wind. From the aroma of freshly ground spices to the rhythmic sound of the millstones, the sensory experience is truly captivating. Apart from the windmills, Zaanse Schans is also home to a collection of traditional wooden houses and buildings, some of which date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. These well-preserved structures provide a glimpse into the architectural style and way of life of the Dutch countryside in bygone eras. Take a leisurely stroll and explore the interiors of the houses that have been transformed into museums, offering insights into the local customs, crafts, and trades that were once prevalent in the area. For those interested in traditional crafts, Zaanse Schans is a haven. Numerous workshops and artisanal stores line the streets, showcasing the skills and techniques that have been passed down through generations. From wooden clog making to cheese production, watch skilled craftsmen and women at work and take home a unique piece of Dutch craftsmanship as a memento of your visit. To enhance your Zaanse Schans experience, be sure to sample some of the local delicacies. Indulge in the mouthwatering flavors of traditional Dutch cheeses, such as Gouda and Edam, or treat yourself to the irresistible taste of freshly baked stroopwafels, thin waffles filled with sweet syrup. The charming cafes and restaurants in the village offer a perfect setting to relax, savor local delights, and soak up the scenic views of the surrounding countryside. As the day draws to a close, Zaanse Schans transforms into a serene haven, away from the bustling city crowds. The windmills silhouette against the setting sun, casting a magical glow over the village. It's a moment to pause, reflect, and appreciate the beauty of this unique place. Zaanse Schans is a true gem, preserving the traditions, history, and craftsmanship that define the Netherlands. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a charming escape, a visit to this idyllic village will leave you with memories to treasure. So, take a step back in time and immerse yourself in the beauty and heritage of Zaanse Schans—a truly Dutch delight.

The venue features a large theater room and a smaller space, hosting plays, comedy shows, concerts, and dance performances. It is praised for its efficient organization and support for refugees and young talent. The theater provides wheelchair access and has a welcoming open foyer. Visitors appreciate the comfortable seating and the vibrant atmosphere created by friendly staff.
Absolutely stunning interior design of the foyer with lots of sitting area near the windows from where one can enjoy the water view. The venue is conveniently located near the city center, just at walking distance from the main shopping area. There’s food and drinks available. The backstage area has a nice Artistenfoyer with helpful staff. Our company performed Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker. Overall, nice venue to which we’re very much looking forward coming back to next year.

Great theater, I like it very much. The concert building in Amsterdam was my favorite and when I change my place to Zaandam I changed also my favorite theater. It contains many halls for concerts, theater shows, music parties and many other activities. And they used some halls for companies seminars or meetings too!

This was good fun and this is an extremely good theatre and theres lots of good peopleshows here and i actually did one myself, i ordered nothing and i got a rose, very cool i like it, the atmosphere was sometimes being gassed with water to maintain air non-dryness but if you dont know what it is for the first time its scary but very cool theatre

Maybe too soon to review after one noon show during a pandemic, but I loved this place. The organization was good from QR codes to cloak room to venue. The fact that the theatre support refugees and young talent should not go unnoticed at a time like this. Big ups for all effort to the leaders. I wish to see more alternative shows, for example in English, or artsy / opera performance would be nice.

It was a unique experience, lovely food of great quality! Service was quick and very polite. If you want a unique menu, definitely visit the Zaan Theater Restaurant. There is no need to combine it with a theater show. Just going for dinner is also a possibility.
