Mont Saint-Michel is a picturesque tidal island and mainland commune in Normandy, France. Situated about one kilometer off the north-western coast, it covers 7 hectares and is located at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches. The island offers a variety of dining options, with restaurants mainly found on or just off Grande Rue. However, hidden gems tucked away on back streets or higher up the mountain may offer lower prices and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Restaurant
Hotel La Mère Poulard is a 19th-century hotel located near the main entrance of Mont Saint-Michel. The hotel offers simple rooms with complimentary Wi-Fi. One of the island's most renowned establishments, it is famous for its incredibly fluffy omelettes, which are considered some of the best in the world. If you wish to dine at this iconic restaurant, it's advisable to make a reservation in advance due to its popularity and long waiting times.
We stayed here for 1 night recently and booked a mother poulard suite. The room itself was very spacious and modern, with good modern bathroom and shower. There are 3 heaters in the rooms which we found useful as it was cold in the morning. The breakfast was included and while it was basic, it had everything we wanted for a satisfying start to the day. There was only one server though and he was rushed of his feet doing everything. Considering the amount of work he had to do, the young man did really well and still had a very good attitude. We chose to stay here as we wanted to stay on the island. It was quiet and magical after all the day crowd was gone. I think out of all the accommodations, La Mére Poulard has some more modern rooms available due to renovations. I would recommend staying here if you wanted to stay on the island. However, be mindful tou have to deal with narrow stairs to get to the rooms.

Beautiful. Lovely stay. Sadly, the restaurant was a HUGE disappointment. The reviews/research we did specifically states that royalty and celebrities dined there, however a few black and white photos from 1900's was NOT what we expected. We we so excited to dine here, yet when we arrived, we were told they were closing. Staff was not fluent in English. Still, they accommodated us, with not so happy kitchen staff. We were seated, and now excited!! We we made the trek for the ever famous "omelet" only to find it was $46 dollars!! Sadly, we opted for a lesser meal of chicken, which was average at best. My advice? Save your $$$ and eat before you go to The Mount. We traveled with a group to France...we all picked our yo "must see and do lists". This was my pick, I was super hyped and all of us were hugely disappointed.
Maureen F — Google review
We had relaxed Sunday lunch, restaurant as described, great historical photos on walls of celebrity diners, fresh, interesting cooking, generous portions, omelette definitely deserves iconic status (even if a bit touristy). Staff very friendly and attentive, if going for lunch expect meals to take a while as it gets very busy at lunchtime, so don't expect to rush. Pricing on higher end but reasonable.
James ( — Google review
It is a nice restaurant, there are only a few places on Mont Saint-Michel, so this is a good option. It was busy and had a good atmosphere. The fish was very good. The chicken was dipped in lovely Isigny cream sauce, it was very tasty. The dessert, the Chocolate Mendiant with nougat cream was also really good, albeit a little meager.
Cathal ( — Google review
The omelette was very interesting and unique. Although the dish looks quite large it’s not actually much. There’s some kind of egg-foam under the omelette which makes it fluffy and light. It creates an unusual feeling when you’re eating it but it was pretty good. I haven’t eaten anything like it before. Would definitely recommend!
Doruk U — Google review
It was a pleasure having lunch here with my husband, november 2025. The omelet is only justified by tasting it… it can't be properly explained in words. The pear with ice cream is good. Kellia's kind service was also excellent. Many thanks!
Jessica C — Google review
Ate here this evening- great all around! Kellia was incredible. Realized our French was very so-so and happy to speak excellent English, even with a few great jokes! The scallops were excellent as a starter and you can’t miss the omelets or the farmhouse chicken! The place to eat on Mont Saint Michel!
Marissa S — Google review
Only referencing the tinned butter cookies purchased at LMP's store during a recent visit. I got taken in by the beautiful tins and assumed they were full of delicious cookies. They were not. There were 4 packages of 4 cookies each (total of 16) bone dry cookies in each tin that were only saved by my tea. Biscotti-level dryness and I hate biscotti. Our guide warned us not to go there as it was a ripoff, but the lure of the tins was too strong. He was right. Get a box of Walker's Shortbread cookies--way better value and taste!

3Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey

Abbey
Church of Christ
The Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel is a stunning example of Gothic architecture, with its towering spires reaching 155 meters above sea level. The 'La Merveille' section is a remarkable display of medieval artistry, and the challenges of transporting building materials across the Bay of Saint-Michel make its construction even more impressive. Separate tickets are required for visiting the island, with adult admission priced at $10 and free entry available for EU citizens or French residents under 25.
Wonderful place! The architecture is amazing and impressive. Visiting it is worth every penny. You’ll pay €20 for 3 hours of parking – that sounds like a lot, but it includes a shuttle bus to the island (there and back) and the entrance fee. Prices in the village itself are nearly double compared to the rest of the area – for example, a fridge magnet usually costs up to €4, but here it’s almost €8. As for the visit, make sure to plan at least 4 hours if you want to go all the way to the top. There are a loooot of stairs!
Robert M — Google review
A dream come true experience. The Abby is worth going for the first time, personally won’t go inside again, too narrow and small, had to wait at many stops because of the crowds. The outside view is much more impressive, especially from the cross path bridge. Take a walk on the sandbank is a cool experience as well. No wonder this is the second most visited attractions in France. Half day is enough though.
Robbin S — Google review
Even after finalising the itinerary, I always keep one or two days extra whenever I visit any place. Because you may 'discover' something interesting later that you may want to visit 😎. Mont Saint Michael was one such place that I 'discovered' when I was in Paris. The visit to the Mont took the whole day (12 hours), but it was worth it. 😊 I had booked the day tour with the 'Paris City Vision' tour company. And everything about this Fairytale Castle on a tidal, magical, holy island turned out to be awesome.....a perfect blend of natural and man made beauty. From the car parking area, which was about 2.5 km from the walkway bridge to the Castle, shuttle buses were available, although you can walk all the way if you want. Carrying an umbrella did help ☂️ as it was hot and sunny. During the French Revolution, the Castle was nationalized, and monks who had settled here as early as 966 CE were expelled. The Castle also served as a prison for some time. However, after the celebration of 1000 years of its foundation, some monks again moved in and started residing in the Castle. So there does exist a very small French commune here; with a mayor, priest, postman, and police ! The bay of Mont Saint Michael, covering an area of about 500 square km, boasts of the highest tides in Europe, and those who want to experience the tides can plan their visits accordingly. Be prepared to climb lots of stairs. The steep winding street of the Castle is lined with many shops and restaurants, so don't forget to taste the classic Mere Poulard omelet here 😋.
Vinod L — Google review
Legendary & Iconic Cathedral This is a must visit for all history & or Architectural fans. This place is very unique in the world and is a must see site. It is not so difficult to get too but of course you have to check the timing of the tides, etc. Once you are here expect to climb a bit. Specially if you want to visit the church. This place is beautiful and is one of the highlight of your visit to France. Try too the local food is is absolutely fabulous!
Paul V — Google review
Very beautiful. We arrived around 9.30 in the morning, the crowds were very manageable and we could see plenty of the Abbey. Past noon it started to get noticeably busier, but by that time we were done anyways and went home. Yes it is busy. Yes it is beautiful. Yes it is a must-see.
Maarten E — Google review
Nice and beautiful castle . Good time to enjoy with friends and family . Time to spent for 4 hours. Lot of hotels are near by there. Only prob is direct connectivity . If you go with tourism it should be much better.
Vignesh 4 — Google review
A place of incredible beauty and impressive architecture. The overcrowding and the prices of the restaurants are worth mentioning. The shuttle service to the mountain is smooth and free. It's recommended to purchase tickets online to avoid lines, and wear comfortable shoes to climb the many stairs.
Rafael C — Google review
The must to see cathedral at the top of the mont. Get ready for the steps to reach it! I suggest 2 things: - buy the tickets in advance at the visitor center (you will skip the line) - buy an audio guide to understand what you are visiting (no written explanation)

Mont Saint-Michel, a UNESCO World Heritage site located on an island off the coast of Lower Normandy in northern France, is renowned for its 11th-century Romanesque abbey and medieval town. The island experiences the highest tides in Europe, adding to its allure. Visitors can explore the winding streets and intricate architecture of the town while marveling at the well-preserved Benedictine Abbey of St Michel perched atop the rocky island.
Majestic!!!!! Town is free to enter. The abbey is a must do, its the main part of the town, get tickets in advance and dont miss the audioguide. Best we have had and nothing would make sense without the context it provides. Do the abbey in the afternoon so you can make your way up to it slowly. See the bridge at high tide, so you can see the town mostly covered in water, for photos. It rarely gets fully covered and only lasts an hour if it does. Parking is $20. There is a shuttle, but walk if you can. The walk up slowly is the best part and only takes a half hour. Give extra time to walk the fields all around it for different views and the sheep. We definitely wanted a full day. Could have done one day in the town and a second day to wander all around the outside. We rented a car from Paris for 3 days. The tolls to drive there and back cost us about $45.
Julia Z — Google review
Very impressive abbey and small village built or a rock, just off the coast. You get there via a purpose built bridge. Park your car on the "mainland" and get the free bus to the abbey. Walk through the tiny little streets that look like the Harry Potter set! Unique experience.
Seg1959 — Google review
Georgeous place, the walf from the parking to the castle takes up to 30-40 min but it's worth. When you get there you can walk through the surroundings freely, but you need tickets (in advance) to enter the castle. It's full of souvenir stores, some restaurants, WC...
Fèlix V — Google review
Absolutely worth the day trip! It's very convenient to visit, as there is a free shuttle bus from the car park directly to the bridge. We walked up to the Abbey and explored the shops inside. On the way down, we took the scenic outer path, where you can enjoy different views of the sand and water. I highly recommend trying the omelette and the lamb chops—they were delicious!
Iris O — Google review
The place is fenomenally beautiful. You can either walk from the parking to the Abbey or take a bus that leaves you at the door. The ambiance inside is fantastic, with plenty of shops and restaurants. The abbey itself is gorgeous, full of history. You can have accompanied tours or go by yourself. Either way, it is super recommended!
Vagner O — Google review
Back to Mont Saint-Michel after seven years — and still no luck catching the high tide! Even so, this place never loses its magic. Wandering through the cobbled lanes and climbing up to the abbey feels like stepping back in time. Set aside at least four hours to explore at a relaxed pace — there’s a lot to see and even more to take in. Guided tour is available, the stories and history they share make the visit even more meaningful.
Warangkana A — Google review
Stunning!! Well worth a visit. Stayed for a couple of hours. Paid €13 to go into the Abbey, entrance for my 10 year old was free!! I stayed in the town of Caen and travelled by car to Mont Saint-Michel, it took 1 hour & 20 minutes to get there. The car park at Mont Saint Michel was €16, which includes entrance to the island. Would highly recommend.
Tina D — Google review
This is a stunning place and an engineering Marvel. However. It’s a long drive from Paris and the parking lots and mandatory buss ride from the parking lot leave a lot to be desired. The bathrooms at the visitor center would take your breath, men’s and women’s. Upon reaching the island, the streets were very narrow and overcrowded, and it was Shop after shop of more or less the same souvenirs largely Chinese junk. Tried some poor quality ice cream. Unless walking on the mud / sand flats with the island in the background is your thing I wouldn’t wast my time here. There are beautiful churches everywhere in Europe. That are much easier to visit. And much prettier beaches elsewhere in France. The site as whole was a little dirty and unkept. I can’t imagine how awful the crowding would be in peak season.

Island
Mont Saint-Michel is a famous monastery in France that attracts visitors from all over the world. Many travelers express their desire to stay overnight to experience the different impressions of this iconic place during both day and night. The surrounding countryside offers charming accommodations such as gites and B&Bs, like Le Clos Saint Gilles, known for its tastefully decorated rooms and an enchanting garden. Visitors can enjoy local products for breakfast while staying there.
Lots of tourists especially in the afternoon. Free to the island but 13 Euro to the Abbey. Definitely worthy a visit and nice walk through the bridge.
Jamie C — Google review
We visited Mont Saint-Michel yesterday, and it was an unforgettable experience. The day began with a soft, lingering fog that wrapped the island in mystery, making the silhouette of the castle appear even more magical and otherworldly. The medieval walls and spires seemed to rise straight out of a dream. It was quite crowded, but we managed to save a lot of time by avoiding the long lines for the shuttle buses from the parking area to the entrance. Instead, we walked, and it was a pleasant approach that allowed us to take in the changing views of the mount. Booking our tickets online also helped us skip the queues at the entrance. By around 3:00 PM, the tide had gone out, revealing the vast sandy flats around the island. We took off our shoes and walked barefoot on the wet sand, feeling the cool, smooth texture under our feet. The panorama was breathtaking: the shimmering reflections of the abbey in the tidal pools, the endless horizon blending sky and earth, and the cries of seabirds circling above. It felt like stepping into another century, surrounded by both the power of nature and the grandeur of history. Mont Saint-Michel is truly a place where natural beauty and human craftsmanship meet in perfect harmony. Fog or sunshine, it holds a timeless charm that’s worth experiencing at least once in a lifetime.

It was my first trip to France. It is a place where you can feel history and be moved by encounters that can only be felt here. It is a place where you want to go as many times as you want.

4hr train ride west of Paris Have to pay 4-5 euros for the bus ride from train station to the Mt Saint Michel Awesome view Small shops along the climb to the Abby
Ronn C — Google review
It was such an adventurous trip to go there. I went to the side bath around 8:00 in a morning and it was so cool to take pictures. Bc not many ppl there in the morning.
Kira — Google review
Very beautiful but much, much too crowded. It feels a bit like a tourist trap. It's the sort of place you have to have visited at least once, but the crowdedness and the fact that it feels like a entertainment park rather than an historical monument, with all the souvenir shops, made me feel like it wasn't as worthwhile as it could have been. Everything also is excessively expensive. Parking, the souvenir shops, the eating facilities,... Everything is REALLY expensive. I get that it's a tourist attraction and you're going to charge a bit more than some random location in the middle of nowhere, but there is a limit. There are equally or even more beautiful but far less crowded places all over France. I would still recommend visiting this place, but during a calmer moment. Outside of the Summer months, either very early or very late.
Ben B — Google review
Very picturesque and interesting site. Dogs are allowed on the island but not inside the Abbey. We enjoyed walking from parking lot to the island (there is shuttle you can take between parking lot and island), as you get great views. It is very popular and can get really crowded on the island.
Sage N — Google review
It's a very touristic place not exactly what some people might search for. Most of the stores had the same things for various prices so do your research before buying

Specialty Museums
Archéoscope is situated on Grande Rue near the Saint-Pierre parish church and offers a combined ticket for various attractions. For 15 Euros per person, visitors can enjoy a light and sound show, explore the Musee Historique, visit a Knights house, and discover the Maritime Museum. The light and sound show provides insights into the historical evolution of Mont Saint Michel but may be considered cringeworthy by some.
A combined ticket for 15 Euro/person gets you entry to a light and sound show, the Musée Historique, a Knights house, and the Maritime Museum. The ‘light and sound’ show is hilariously bad in a cringeworthy way but does provide some interesting information on the historical development of the Mont Saint Michel and the changes that took place over time. The Musée Historique is very interesting and includes exhibits on medieval weaponry, coinage, sculpture and more. In the garden you will find the Périscope which is so interesting and well worth doing. Afterwards you will travel below the Musée to the prisons which include Madam Tussaud-esque figures. The Chevalier’s home is beautifully decorated with surviving medieval furnishings and is astonishing to walk through each floor. What it must have been like to live there! His wife, Tiphaine, appears to have been a very interesting woman and half the exhibit is about her. Unfortunately the Maritime Museum is difficult to find and we ran out of time to search for it but it sounded great with info about the local environment. I know others have said the ticket isn’t worth it but I would only agree with that if you don’t speak/read French at all. There are no English explanations throughout some of the exhibits and the light and sound show is only in French.
Amanda C — Google review
The sound and light show was definitely my favourite of the four as I at least learned something and could warm up from the rain outside (but I understand French). The other museums are in terrible need of a clean and update. The maritime ‘museum’ especially is basically a grandfather’s attic of boat models in different states of disrepair.
Rick S — Google review
Don't waste your money. We were very disappointed. Paid as part of 4 so called museum/ experience. Extremely outdated, not maintained or cleaned at all. Basically a scam for taking money from tourist. I could build better museum in my back garden in a shed.
Szilveszter K — Google review
Biggest scam the “museum” is compose of 2 rooms full of mini boat with 15 screen (14 not working) a video projector that show you a video made in 1990. Run away from it asap
Paul — Google review
It’s so terrible we laughed! Wanted to hear about the history of the Abbey, but you’ll experience a French only projector experience from 30 years ago with a puff of smoke enjoy!! (AVOID!!!)
Mike S — Google review
Only in French. It might have been great 30 years ago, but today it's just bad.
G — Google review
Scam is a strong word, but it's definitely not worth the 9e. I wanted to learn more about the engineering of the abbey, and I learned absolutely nothing - all the info presented had already been shared in the audio guide of the abbey. Unlike other attractions in the area, this one is 100% in French with very few visual aids to communicate what is happening, so I wouldn't even consider going unless you are at a B2+ level. Show was so hilariously bad that the main appeal of this attraction was getting to describe it to people afterwards. It was 5' cooler than the outside on a 31' day so it may still have a place in a post-climate change world.
Kristin M — Google review
The guys in the entrance stop us to sell us the tickets without even warning us that everything was in French, he even ask us our language previously. After buying the ticket and get it in. We came back to complain and ask if the rest of the museums were only in French as well. When I ask my money back he suddenly did not understand English. He literally told me "Sorry, I do not speak English", felt like scamming, for real.

Historical landmark
The Cloître de l'abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel, built between 1225-1228, served a purely spiritual purpose to guide monks in meditation. The fine limestone sculptures are a highlight, but visitors are urged not to touch them. Three arches of the west gallery open to the sea and were meant to be an entrance to the chapter house. Major restoration work was done in 2017, including lowering the galleries' floor to its original level.
A beautiful little garden courtyard in the heart of the Abbaye. Very intricate stonework carvings the edges and vies both up to the spire of the abbey. We were lucky to be there when the sun was streaming down on the courtyard and the flowers were in full bloom.
Graham T — Google review
Beautiful and worth the visit but very very busy, lots of steps, little shade on hot days.
Hayley E — Google review
My wife and I visited Mont-Saint-Michel on May 30, 2025, with high expectations. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing and, at times, felt unsafe. The entire island was dangerously overcrowded – especially the access routes and the surroundings of the abbey. Getting onto the island meant pushing through massive crowds, and entering the abbey was already chaotic. While the interior of the abbey itself was relatively calm, the situation when leaving the site was unacceptable: it took us around 90 minutes to get out. We felt unsafe and had the impression that there was no clear control of the number of visitors or how to manage such crowds. Out of concern for our safety, we gave up our guided tour and left early. I contacted the site administration afterward but never received a response. We sincerely hope that the responsible authorities revise their crowd management and safety measures. Until then, we cannot recommend visiting.
Frank S — Google review
This is included as part of the tour and admission ticket to visit the Abbey at the top of Mont St Michael. Beautiful cloisters and we had good weather so the sunlight really highlighted the stonework. At one point, you can get great views of the landscape outside. Absolutely advise paying to visit this part of the Mont as beautiful architecture.
Elizabeth B — Google review
In order to gain access to the Catholic Abbey areas, you must buy a ticket on site or online. The steps and walk up to the Abbey are free. Go in the main entrance if you are not conned into taking a local guide. The structure is very easily walked and toured without a local guide. Once inside, if you wonder from the trail of visitors, you will find items you do not expect. A true French experience, the design and medival architecture will amaze you and confuse you at the same time. Easy to see how this location was a prison long ago .......and may still be a prison now to those who make their living here conning and interacting with Catholic pilgrimage visitors and non-catholic tourists. If you love religion.... and botany.... and history you will feel "at home" here.

À place to visit , a must if you come in France . Le mont saint Michelle with tha habbey that look the sea around , the village with old houses with wood on the facarde is a unique place .

So worth the views and the history. A lot of steps so be mindful if you can’t do steps. Would recommend paying for a ticket in advance, as there was some mis communications with the staff as one said we was free as we are 25 but one said we had to pay. But no problem as we was happy to pay the £15 each. The view as are amazing from each location too 🏰 Worth it!
Andrew K — Google review
Pretty amazing and really worth a visit if you want to turn back time and go back to medieval times (at least as far as the monumental buildings and little narrow streets go, not the amount of tourists). The place was packed with people that this place could barely take - just proves how popular it is and how worth a visit. We were with two young kids so opted for a shuttle bus (free of charge) from the car park to the Mont Saint Michael. The walk is approx. 45 minutes (surely without kids😜) and the shuttle bus takes approx 10-12 minutes. Visited the Abbey as well and definitely worth it - for the architecture itself). Also there is a treasure hunt for the kids which you can get some information at the tourist office close to the entrance. Although the app definitely needs some work as kept crashing on Apple devices (strange). Very well worth a visit.

Located on the Grande Rue, on the way up to the Abbey at Le Mont-Saint-Michel, is the Church of Saint-Pierre. This hidden gem is often overlooked by visitors but holds significant historical and cultural value. Founded in the 8th century by Saint Aubert, it serves as a burial place with a cemetery located on its south side. The church features Romanesque pillars and wooden statues from the 17th century.
As others have suggested, an easy to miss little church often hidden in the shadow of the abbey above. We happened upon it as a brief rain shower was coming over and ducked inside to avoid getting wet. What a great find and a lovely little church to view.

Lovely little church that would be easy to walk by and miss. The Mont is such a maze of little streets and passageways, and it's worth making this one of your places to visit here. Free to visit but as is common in many of the churches, you can pay a euros to light a candle.
Elizabeth B — Google review
Fantastic little church, and free to enter, in the middle of Le Mont St Michel. I highly recommend popping in here for some quiet, cool, and peaceful relaxation away from the busy tourist main street. You can also go out of the back of the church to the cemetery and enjoy some of the quieter back streets of the village.
Josh W — Google review
Very nice church with daily mass. Unfortunately it is allowed to walk around during mass, which is disrespectful in itself but it would be nice if there were more signs to let people know to be silent and respectful during mass. It’s only 30 minutes per day. The mass is not a tourist attraction.
Thomas E — Google review
An American citizen visiting this fortress for the purpose of self education, self religious reflection, and general tourism interest will see religious icons almost at every turn. When you enter the small doorway for this chapel, you see a flat bench pew area in the center, darkness on the right, and an altar on the left. Several elderly people will be in the pews, and I genuflected and sat down on one of them. Spiritual respect of the chapel and its holdings is not always given by visitors stumbling in. St Michael is the patron saint of all religious believing airborne military personnel and supposedly all law enforcement officers. I found my way to the Saint Michael statue after passing several votive candle areas adorned with small colorful candles fully lit in all respects. The way in is the way out.....in my opinion. A Catholic person could spend a full week here easy, learning about the icons and congregation. I was in the area from 1030 am to 1630 hours and attended one full French Catholic mass, ate one plate of mussels in white wine sauce and got man handled by two French women at a souvenir store....and then walked back to the parking lot.

Quiet, small, and cozy church.

A very small church with a few stained glass windows, long benches to sit on and places to buy candles and light one.
Maria N — Google review
The church was founded in the 8th century by Saint Aubert, to serve as a burial place (on the south side of the church is the cemetery). From the Romanesque period, the church preserves in particular the pillars of the impost at the entrance of the choir. It is dedicated to St. Peter, also note that on both sides of the entrance to the chapel of Saint Michel are St. Aubert and St. Roch, are wooden statues of the seventeenth century

Tour du Nord, located in the Normandy region, offers incredible views and access to the abbey. Visitors can enjoy stunning vistas and explore the 13th-century North Tower for a unique perspective on the tides. The northeast tower provides great views of the tidal area and mainland. While it's a bit of a walk from the car park, it's worth it to experience this grand and massive site with its many restaurants and hotels.
Not to be confused with the Abbey or other named sub areas of this fortress, the du nord area is outstanding for panoramic views of the mud flats, the horizon, and the structure behind you. Contrary to popular marketing, you can walk in the mud flats and not get excessively muddy..... just pick and choose your booted feet placement. Not many sea shells here....but if you look hard, you will find some. Stunning French Foreign Legion masonry and brick fortress work.

Very beautiful part of the Mont Saint-Michele. This tower is small, but very nice. Lovely visit. This Tower is part of the walls, which go around the monastery. Stunning and majestic views!

This is a must if you love commercialism, queuing and being over charged for everything. This is one of the few places that I haven't visited in France before so as we were close by we decided to stop in - I wish I hadn't. A horrible over priced tourist attraction that exists purely to make money. Parking is 17 euros minimum, queues for the free shuttle are horrendous so be prepared to walk. Once there the queues are horrendous to get to anything, the prices for anything are exorbitant. Quite literally this is the worst place we've ever visited in France and symbolises everything I hate about modern day commercialism. 2 stars because the views are good and the buildings themselves are stunning

MUST SEE/DO IF IN THE NORMANDY REGION. This place was incredible! The views and abbey are amazing - and there is so much access to so much of the abbey. It was amazing. Now for the details - parking is 3.3 km from the island and you cannot drive on the island. We were told it is about 44 mins to walk. There are shuttles but they can be full. We arrived around 3, had front parking and easy access in the shuttles. Take lots of pictures as the views cannot be matched.

You have to visit this place at least once in your life…
Yury S — Google review
The North Tower (13th century) is an excellent viewpoint for observing the approach of the tides. This tower, built on a rocky spur, is very representative of the defensive style in force at the time of its construction: the highest possible height seemed to be the goal. The use of the cannon made this type of defense obsolete and later only low and robust towers were built on the Monte.

Hotel
Relais Saint-Michel is a four-star property located less than two miles from Mont Saint-Michel, offering relaxed rooms and suites with balconies or terraces. The hotel provides a shuttle for guests who prefer not to walk. The decor is simple and elegant, with breathtaking views of the island and surrounding salt marshes from large windows and the patio. With spacious rooms including doubles and family quadruples, some with private terraces, the hotel caters to a broad client base.
We had an amazing view of the castle from our room and the staff were super accomadating. To top it all off, their restaurant is really impressive. Beside the excellent view, the food was beautifully crafted and worth travelling for on its own merit.

We were fortunate enough to have a view of the Abbey from our room. Dinner in the restaurant was absolutely amazing. The presentation, and flavor of each course was exceptional and the staff were friendly and very attentive. If staying here I would suggest you dine in the restaurant.

Lovely hotel with clean room and nice balcony with the view of Mont Saint-Michel. Their restaurant has great food options for breakfast and dinner. Specially Cloevan's service, he made sure we enjoyed our dinner and was very accommodating.
Hanh J — Google review
This is truly one of the best places to stay when visiting Mont Saint-Michel. If you choose to stay on the Abbey, be prepared for a bit of a trek — or time your arrival with the tram. It can get crowded, and there’s still a steep cobblestone climb once you’re dropped off. That said, the hotels at the Abbey itself looked lovely, and I imagine the experience would be unforgettable if you’re up for the walk. If not, this place is perfect. The suites are spacious — mine was two stories with a beautiful view. Try to avoid Room 211 if you can; a few trees slightly block the nighttime view of the Abbey, which is truly magical to fall asleep to. Don’t expect a five-star Adolphus or Ritz-Carlton experience — those hotels are wonderful, but they don’t belong in this kind of setting. The Relais is exactly what it should be: comfortable, charming, and authentic. The food was good, the views unbeatable, the people friendly, and the bed cozy. Plus — parking!
Keith B — Google review
Stayed in room 208 on the top floor, advertised as full view of Mont Saint Michel, but with the trees on the adjacent property, you only see the top 25% of it. For $300+ euros a night and advertising stating full views, it isn’t truthful, so beware! Noted this to the staff who agreed but just politely shrugged and brushed us off. No Air Conditioning or fan in the rooms thus they get hot overnight. It’s ok in October, can’t imagine what it would be like in the summer months. Staff are helpful, restaurant has a full view of Mont Saint Michel, but is expensive. Breakfast is buffet style, lots to choose from, they do run out of items, but when you ask, they refill them promptly. Not of their fault, but they are the last hotel before the ‘Mont’, so from 9h to 18h, the free shuttle service from all the hotels to the Abby is always crammed full so be prepared to walk 30 minutes. Parking is indépendant of the hotel, you pay 10 Euros daily, make sure to get your receipt from the machine when you pay the first time, OR they will make you pay again each time you leave the restricted zone.
John H — Google review
If you want to enjoy the view of Mont Saint Michel, this is the place to be. The interior and furniture inside the hotel are a bit outdated but the view makes up for it all. You also have the view in the restaurant. The staffs aren't overly friendly but friendly enough. The bus going to the island is right outside of the hotel too.

Located in the heart of Mont Saint-Michel, Mont Burger is a leading fast food establishment that offers a gourmet twist to traditional fast food. Known for its generous and delicious burgers, this restaurant has gained a reputation for being a welcoming and popular spot among both tourists and locals. Visitors praise the warm and friendly staff, as well as the mouthwatering bacon burger, chicken burger, and delectable fries.
From beginning to end this place is great. The chef "Brad Pitt" and his partner were fantastic and welcoming. We chatted about their past and upcoming visit to San Francisco among other things. Once ordered, the food came out fast and it was delicious. For the location, the cost was very reasonable. The burgers and fries were top notch. If i return to Mont St Michel, will definitely eat here again.

This is one incredible burger! I went for their classic beef burger — top-grade quality from start to finish. The patty was fresh, juicy, and bursting with flavour. Friendly and engaging counter staff (maybe the owner) made the experience even better with their warm and welcoming service. Truly one of the best burgers I’ve ever had!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mont Burger – What a great find! After a disappointing experience at La Vieille Auberge, we went scouting for a new spot and came across Mont Burger — and what a difference! The staff welcomed us with big smiles and great energy. They explained everything clearly, even asked how we wanted our burgers cooked. The food was fresh, the burgers were delicious, and the chips perfectly crispy. Prices are reasonable too. Well done, team — 5 stars from us! 👏🍔

店員さんがとても優しくておすすめです! The lady working and taking orders was very kind despite my elementary level French. The burger was amazing, definitely one of the best I've had in France, and I think the price of 10 euros for a burger is very good considering the location. I definitely recommend this place for anyone needing a quick meal (we got seats immediately and the food came fast) or just wanting a good lunch!

Delicious! You must stop here to eat. We’ve been in the area for two days and have had terrible service and a hard time finding food when we want. I guess the Europeans have forced us to adapt to their service and food schedule. This place was a great atmosphere, excellent service, reasonable prices and great food! Staff was very attentive and spoke English and food came very quickly WITH a smile! Loved the American movie classic photos at the counter too! Finally, a business who knows how to do business!

Restaurant Du Guesclin offers a classic upscale dining experience with stunning panoramic views of the bay. The traditional Norman cuisine includes specialties like saltmarsh lamb, mussels marinieres, seafood platters, and the famous Mont-Saint-Michel omelette. The restaurant provides a warm and efficient service while offering a selection of local ciders.
We both got the lamb and it was one of my favorite meals from our France trip! We a started my husband got a salad and I got a vegetable soup. The soup was just fine, nothing special, but nothing to complain about. The duck was GREAT. And the chocolate cake and ice cream were good :) The view was lovely. They only take reservations for people who stay at the hotel. We got there a couple minutes before they opened and they filled completely up! So either get there early or be ready to wait.
Madeline B — Google review
Tourist trap, food is horrible and wasted our family 1.5 hrs just for simple dishes. Totally wasted our day. Kids menu comes with one boiled chicken sigh and plain pasta.
Ike J — Google review
The service was excellent. They were very friendly and attentive. The steak was chewy. The lamb was good, but we were only given butter knives to cut them. Is this a French thing? I’ve had steak and even sausage before in France and we had steak knives. It was slightly challenging to say the least. The oysters weren’t super fresh either. I understand it’s a tourist place and I expected to pay more, but for the amount of money we spent I just felt we should have gotten better food and at least a steak knife for steak.

Best restaurant in Mont-Saint-Michel. Very good soft roasted lamb, acceptable prices, very friendly personell + amazing view. All other restaurants much worse.

On Mont Saint-Michel, where the tides embrace the land, a magical view unfolds with waves kissing the island’s stand. Mussels warm the cockles of my heart, as sea and sky weave a timeless art at Hotel Restaurant Le Duguesclin.
Pokemontpeee T — Google review
Not recommended. The soufflé style omelette was uncooked with foamy egg overflowing. I later ate a real one at Le Mere Poulard to realize this one was poop. The vegetable soup was a watery mess without salt or flavor. The pate was chunky and not pleasing to the eyes. Gross to be honest. And it was too expensive.

We didn't go in here for gifts, as such was not the nature of our vacation, but it was perfect for picking up some calvados, cheese, and other supplies for a picnic at Mont St Michel. Interesting lawn sculptures as well with the painted cows, similar to what we did locally with Orca's and Bears.
Graham T — Google review
It has a little bit of everything (gift shop, food, beverages). It even had some clothing and hats. There was also a vending machine outside to purchase items.
Melissa S — Google review
Nice display of goods but at inflated prices, clearly aimed at the affluent tourist. For example, a small packet of salted peanuts that, in Intermarché, sells for 1.20€, costs 2.60€ here. Of course, I understand that the costs in this shop must be higher but I thought that was too steep a price increase.

This is one of these tourist attractions that leave you feeling ripped off. We visited today at a cost of €9 per adult. What we were presented with was three small rooms across three floors (two bedrooms and one living room) containing some furniture and that was that! A little garden at the top of the house as you exited. The rooms were very, very dusty and clearly the house hadn’t been cleaned for some time. It took just a few minutes to see it all. I was furious as the magnificent abbey only cost €11 by comparison. Do yourself a favour and give this place a miss, spend your money elsewhere. Overall the visit to Mint St Michel was lovely, the experience with this place left me a little fuming.

We were happy to find a table for 4 on the terrace off the walls here overlooking the bay for a drink after visiting the Abbey. Part of a larger hotel, restaurant and sandwich shop collection, the staff were friendly and accommodating despite it being peak summer busy time. We enjoyed beer, cider and ice cream. We popped in after our tour and asked the server if she had a table. She appeared inconvenienced at the idea of another table to serve. I understand they are busy and it can be very tiring serving tables all day, but we felt very unwelcome. An American couple who was paying, said that we could have their table… all in front of the server, who said we could take it. Upon sitting down, we waited for over 10 minutes before walking out. No service was provided, no menus given, even though she had wiped our table for us to sit. She simply never returned. We were very disappointed.

Mont Saint-Michel offers stunning views from various vantage points, making it a photographer's paradise. The walkway connecting the car park to the island provides several opportunities to capture its beauty from afar. For an even more breathtaking experience, visiting during high tide showcases the castle as a true tidal island, offering incredible photo opportunities. Additionally, arriving early is recommended to avoid crowds and fully enjoy the magnificent views with fewer people around.
So when I spotted this place highlighted on Google maps, of course I needed to check it out! Essentially this viewpoint is in the middle of the barrage bridge. Yes, you do get a great view of the Mont and it's central in photos. Free to access

This is an amazing view of the island. If you are going to visit i would strongly recommend that you visit when the tide is at its highest so that you can see the castle as a true tidal island giving amazing views and incredible photo opportunities. If you are to visit the island itself I would recommend arriving early as it becomes very busy later in the day and is much more enjoyable seeing the island with fewer people around.

Georgeous place, the walf from the parking to the castle takes up to 30-40 min but it's worth. When you get there you can walk through the surroundings freely, but you need tickets (in advance) to enter the castle. It's full of souvenir stores, some restaurants, WC...

Oh gosh, that was great destination. If you ever wanna visit France, don't miss it. It's a must do location. If you'll walk up to the top of the tiny city, you'll think differently about your life, you'll be very happy and you'll understand...why it's important to walk up to the top and think about your life while you slowly look around, you'll understand in a second that we are so small and fragile ... We are all birds of God! Slow down and start feeling the meaning of real life. Here the nature will rule on you, you're small..... nature is big.

Have been fascinated with this fairytale "castle" on a magical island for a long time. Found out more about it when planning the visit. This amazing structure was Gothic abbey and prison in the early centuries. High and low tide, day and night, four seasons give this abbey different charm. Not much light up at night, except in July and August, however you're not expecting big crowd.😉
Miley C — Google review
Shawn S — Google review
We visited early in the morning — we were there around 7:30 AM. It was very easy to find a parking spot. Since it was early, hardly anyone had arrived yet, and we chose to use the shuttle. If you come at this hour, you can witness an incredible tidal phenomenon within about two hours and see how the sea surrounds the island. We didn’t go inside the cathedral. Even just the tide is a natural spectacle that you absolutely must see. If you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy a more peaceful experience, early morning is the best time to visit.

Porte de l'Avancée is one of the three grand doors marking the main street at Mont Saint Michel. The castle doesn't require tickets for entry, but you'll need them to access the top for a breathtaking view and to visit the current exhibition celebrating its 1000-year anniversary. While there are plenty of steps, free toilets are available inside the exhibition area, or you can use paid facilities at the entrance.
Mont Saint Michel is an amazing place. You don't need tickets to enter the castle, but you will need to tickets to get to the top - the view is amazing and well worth it. There's also a current exhibition for the 1000 year anniversary. Plenty of steps, free toilets inside the exhibition area or you will have to pay 1 Euro at the front. There's a free bus shuttle to take you from the visitors centre or you can walk, which takes about 30-35mins.

Mont Saint Michel Amazing place. Like magical 😇 but it's not suitable for handicap 🧑‍🦽 because there is no access to get to the top hill side without lift service. It's really difficult.

I have to say my experience at these Toilets was very appalling. My reason being that the Lady running it charged 2 Euros for me to excrete my bodily fluids. Anyways there was another Woman working there who looked like she was at the lowest point in her life even lower than the Mariana Trench (for those who have been living under a rock the Mariana Trench is the deepest underwater trench in the world). Anyways, back to the story, as I entered the sanctuary of the Mont Saint Michael bathrooms a very pungent smell came about my nostrils. To my disgust I found large splats of diarrhoea smelted across the walls (my best assumption was the Charging lady from the start as her face looked as red as my little boys cherries). Anyways, my experience at the Toilets was not only pungent and disgusting it was filling me with gratitude to the fact that back in the Brexit geezer land of the UK we have access to free toilets. - infinity/ 10. NO BOSH

Barrage du Mont Saint Michel offers three paths leading to the Place du Barrage, providing a 30-minute walking trip. It's a great spot for capturing stunning shots of Mont Saint Michel with the waterway in the center. The location is ideal for long exposure night photography, especially from the raised section of the barrier at the back. Visitors recommend visiting during sunrise or sunset for picturesque views and beautiful colors.
We saw the barrage when we first visited Mont St Michel, back when it was part of the plan to restore the waterfront and walkway and much of the work was still under construction along the walkway. What a wonderful way to restore the approach to the Mont and re-establish its maritime character.

The scenery was so spectacular that it left me speechless. I was just so impressed that I spent hours looking at Mont Saint-Michel from here. The colors of the sky, clouds, and light change from moment to moment, and the view of Mont Saint-Michel is never the same for a moment. It was truly impressive. Stand here and put aside all your daily worries and simply become one with the stunning Mont Saint-Michel scenery, the beautiful land, and the magnificent nature. I hope you have a wonderful experience here!

From here you have a beautiful view of Mount Saint Michel, both at sunrise and sunset (any time of the day in fact). It is designed for people to sit here and contemplate the Mount. It was built from June 2006 to June 2009. Designed by architect Luc Weizmann, it was put into service in September 2009.

Perfect at dawn for misty morning photos, with just the bird calls for company. I enjoyed this view more than the visit to the Mont, which was too touristy but the free shuttle bus is worth a quick go.
Jameswburke — Google review
The barge is a great location to shoot Mon San Michel with the water way central. If you want long exposure night shots shoot full frame at circa 100mm and stand on the raised section of the barrier at the back and shoot over the lower walkway. The lower section picks up every vibration and ruins shots even on a strong tripod. I managed to shoot at 3 minutes at 100mm from the back but barely managed a second at the front.

Small, inhabited island with 11th-century, Romanesque abbey & the highest tides in Europe.
We visited early in the morning — we were there around 7:30 AM. It was very easy to find a parking spot. Since it was early, hardly anyone had arrived yet, and we chose to use the shuttle.

Káló A — Google review
Very impressive abbey and small village built or a rock, just off the coast. You get there via a purpose built bridge. Park your car on the "mainland" and get the free bus to the abbey. Walk through the tiny little streets that look like the Harry Potter set! Unique experience.
Seg1959 — Google review
Back to Mont Saint-Michel after seven years — and still no luck catching the high tide! Even so, this place never loses its magic. Wandering through the cobbled lanes and climbing up to the abbey feels like stepping back in time. Set aside at least four hours to explore at a relaxed pace — there’s a lot to see and even more to take in. Guided tour is available, the stories and history they share make the visit even more meaningful.
Warangkana A — Google review
Must-see site, BUT: a) avoid French national holidays + French school holidays at all cost. This is a tiny island with tiny, winding allyways and it gets VERY crowded b) do NOT go on the island when you're less mobile, with prams, with small kids who can't walk yet, when you're in a wheelchair etc . There are 1001 steps and no lifts. Don't take older / big dogs either, they get crushed when it's busy and they'll find the steps difficult. You can still admire the island without going on it, so even if steps / crowds are daunting for you, it's worthwhile going to see the setting.

The Tourist Information Centre at Mont Saint-Michel offers a range of services and information for visitors. You can inquire about guided tours of the mudflats, check tide charts for safe exploration, and learn about ongoing construction projects such as the demolition of the dam. The center also provides amenities like toilets, brochures, and 3D video presentations of the abbey. Visitors appreciate the helpful staff, clean facilities, and informative displays.
This is the tourist information centre for Mont St Michael and besides the usual information for the Mont, there is a display of historical photos from the Battle of Normandy. The gateway to Mont St Michel, a short walk from several parking lots. Clean free washrooms, which is also where the parking payment kiosks are located. Tour Gabriel, also known as Gabriel Tower, is a 16th-century defensive structure located on the western side of Mont-Saint-Michel. It was completed by King's lieutenant Gabriel Dupuy and features a round shape with three levels for cannons to shoot in all directions through flared loopholes. Visitors can exit through the gate and head clockwise towards Chapelle Saint-Aubert before stopping to take photos of the Mont from the sandbanks.
Sadly, another tower we only saw from above. You probably need two full days to completely see all that Mont St. Michel has tomorrow.

Built in the 16th century by order of Gabriel du Puy, the Gabriel tower defended the west side of the Mount. Inside, protected by thick walls, the cannons, arranged on three floors, could fire in all directions through flared loopholes to the outside. This great bastion could have withstood a siege by itself.

Kimmy607 — Google review
Less busy area of Mont-San-Michele, and a great place to actually enter the island. It takes walking around on the rocks to the left, possibly not accessible at high tide, rather than going in the main entrance. Visit the chapel around the bend first before walking up the ramp by the tower.

Loop Bastion is a fascinating historical site that should be on every traveler's itinerary. Nestled on St. Michael's Hill, this unique architectural marvel showcases an array of historical monuments, including a monastery church dating back to the 11th-16th centuries and Gothic structures from the 13th-15th centuries. The bastion itself stands out with its distinctive angled design, unlike traditional round towers, making it an intriguing example of military architecture from the 15th century.
The Loop Bastion is an odd shaped 'tower' being angled rather than round like most other towers. As a bastion, and with the slits, must have been the cannonade tower protecting the bay area.
Graham T — Google review
One of the bastions of Mont St. Michel. Lies on the eastern side and has views of the shoreline going up the coast. Has an angled structure juxtaposing the usual cylindrical shape of many other towers on the island. Structure of some kind in the center but unsure what it is.
P K — Google review
This tower has a slate roof on its top floor, but its interest lies in the fact that it dates from the 15th century and its ground plan is shaped like a spur. That is, the front part forms a triangle. It was designed for a new weapon of that time which was the artillery. It is a prototype of the triangular bastions found later in Renaissance fortresses, especially in the 17th century, at the time of Vauban.

(Translated by Google) The Tour Boucle houses this accommodation. In the 20th century, these buildings did not exist and we could only see a gaping hole here, like on the north tower. We then built walls and a roof but no floor. In reality, behind the door of the building, this very deep hole remains, making this house a simple decoration. Today, its destiny is changing since work is underway to make it a store dedicated to local products. If you pass there, be curious to look through the holes in the doors to see what is there.

(Translated by Google) The Boucle Tower, often referred to as the Bastion, is part of the fortification wall and is located on the northeast corner of Mont Saint-Michel between the North Tower and the Crescent Tower. The building was built in 1481 on the site of a previous building. The floor plan is in the form of a spur and its construction is an early form of Vauban. The Boucle has four floors and protrudes 20 meters to the east above the fortifications. The walls of the Boucle are four meters thick and equipped with embrasures intended for cast-iron breech-loaders. The foundation of the tower is five to seven meters deep and is founded on hard sandy mud. On the top floor of the tower there is a house covered with a high slate roof. According to legend, there used to be a dungeon here, but there is no evidence of this.
