Playa Contramar is a charming cobblestone beach with gentle waves and stunning scenery. However, the natural beauty of half the beach has been marred by an unsightly stone patio built by the owners of Villa Luna Kuku. Despite its challenging access route, it offers a serene and secluded atmosphere, making it less crowded than other beaches. This hidden gem is perfect for relaxation and snorkeling.

Just loved our experience at Rufos. Excellent food cooked over charcoal fire. Steaks and seafood are the specialty. The atmosphere, the service and the entertainment were top notch and capped off with Rufo himself grabbing a guitar and ripping through some Santana, Hendrix and other classics. People were spontaneously dancing. What a terrific find. Highly recommend
Edgar G — Google review
We had a delicious meal for 4. I enjoyed the catch of the day (Red Snapper, grilled to perfection), 2 had the Rib Eye steak, and 1 had the pork ribs. All were grilled perfectly. Sides were also grilled and delicious. Good margaritas, and we requested Mescal with orange, so the Rufo sent staff to get fresh oranges to make our drink! "Appropriate for dinner "Live music was a nice addition to the atmosphere. Thank you for a very nice experience.
Jennifer H — Google review
My cousin loves this place so we went for dinner. The service was good and it was fun listening to the music. I had the ribs, my wife had the pork chop, another of our party had the tuna, and one had the steak. The ribs were flavorful, but a bit tough. The pork chop was overcooked so it was a bit dry and chewy. The tuna was pretty good and the steak was by far the best. I thought the prices were over the top and would likely not go back, nor would I recommend it. Not terrible, but certainly not worth the price.
David H — Google review
Finally! A good rib eye steak in Mexico. I wish I had tried this place when I first got to Zihua. Service was great, too.
Jack S — Google review
We had a great dinner! Fresh fish and a filet that was cooked perfectly! Marisol took good care of us! Would recommend this restaurant.
Gabriella C — Google review
The food was really good. The price was higher then other places with the same flavor. We had the Mahi and chicken, both were really well cooked and juicy.
Pat M — Google review
A little off the beaten path, but in a beautiful and friendly neighborhood of small villas, shops, and restaurants. The staff was welcoming. Everything on the menu looks delicious, and I can say that with certainty about the pork chop and fresh snapper dishes. Live music was playing throughout the evening. I highly recommend exploring Zihua's quaint corners; especially those of us (like myself) that are staying in one of the Playa la Ropa condos.
Jon G — Google review
I had breakfast there, specially their chilaquiles with eggs and chicken. I washed it down with a strawberry and banana smoothie. The service was great as was their food. The atmosphere was very relaxing. I'll definitely be back

Fruits and vegetables available here but the prices were not that low like we expected. It is hot so be prepared to be extremely warm walking up and down the aisles and it is a bit claustrophobic if you are taller. It is very similar to many flea markets in Mexico. It was a good experience though and we picked up some nice fresh fruits.

Playa las Gatas is a beautiful and calm beach in Zihuatanejo, Mexico. It offers a long stretch of sand with options to dine and relax under umbrellas. Accessible by a short boat ride from Zihuatanejo or a walk from La Ropa Beach, the crystal-clear waters make it perfect for swimming. Boats can be taken across the bay for 80 pesos round trip, providing an enjoyable way to reach this serene destination.
Very nice beach. Clear water, but very shallow and rocky. Lots of food places. Usually food places charge you $200 pesos for sun beds. You can get there by boat from Principal beach for $80 pesos round trip or 10 minutes hike from Playa La Ropa (free).
Sean T — Google review
Beautiful little beach with many options for dining, snorkeling, massages. Clean, calm water, and not too crowded. And the boat taxi is added fun! Rocky hike to La Ropa takes about 15 minutes.
Sarah W — Google review
The beach is beautiful. The sheer amount of plastic and garbage on the beach and water is not nice. I saw more plastic while snorkeling than fish. It would be an amazing beach if the restaurants didn't line up to water line and the garbage was cleaned up. Go all the way to the end of the beach if you want to get away from the crowds and music from the restaurants.
Kru — Google review
Beautiful Calm water and highly Swim-able Can get here with a boat (80 pesos) from Zihu town or walk from LaRopa beach.
ANDRE A — Google review
I really enjoy Playa Las Gatas, it's a calm beach, with clear blue water, protected by a reef/rocks. It is great for families, restaurants line the beach so you can have drinks, food and shade right at the waters edge, while kids play in the sand/water. Some good resting spots are Arnoldos, food and drinks are good but gets busy and is close to beach entrance so high foot traffic area. Personally we enjoy Franco's amazing hospitality at Otilia. Location is great, right at the end of the beach, lighter foot traffic, food is OK, drinks are good. Grab a bucket of beer on ice, some coconut shrimp or whole fried garlic snapper and sit back and enjoy the beach. Franco is really the highlight though, what a great guy and really takes care of his customers. Also don't miss the onsite masseuse, she is fantastic too

Beach
La Ropa Beach, known as Clothes Beach, is a renowned destination in Zihuatanejo. Its name originates from a shipwreck that occurred centuries ago, causing a significant amount of cargo and clothing to wash ashore. This picturesque beach boasts the Sotavento and Catalina hotels, formerly one establishment managed by doa Eva. La Ropa Beach's allure is heightened during the off-season when its beauty shines even brighter.
Awesome stretch of authentic Mexican old school fishing village. This hidden gem of Mexican Pacific Coast beach is extraordinary and very worthy of visiting. There’s at least a week or 10 days or a couple weeks of things to do, I’ve been here a month and it’s been awesome.
Ash C — Google review
Great beach. Clean, spacious, great views and sunsets. Lots of hotels at varied prices. From Centro you can take the Combi here for 12-13 pesos, try to ride outside shift change rush, as they are all full of workers at that time. You can also walk. From the Kioto traffic circle follow the sign to La Ropa, on Palmar St., and up the hill it turns into Escenica La Ropa. After you reach the peak of the hill and start to decend, you'll see a sign for the hotel La Casa Que Canta -this steep concrete path will take you right down to the north end of La Ropa beach. Its easy in a decent pair of shoes. Alternatively, you can skip this path and stay on Escenica La Ropa until you reach the Dolphins, and turn right down to the beach. It is a sweaty walk in the heat of the day, but less onerous in the morning or evening.
Chris O — Google review
Came here the first week of April and sad to say, the beach did not meet my expectations. I wanted to do some snorkeling but I couldn't even see 12 inches down in the water. I did meet several people that said it's not normally like this, so hopefully this was a rare experience. The sand was nice and much better than the other places in the area. But as for this experience, we have better beaches and sand in the Indiana dunes, lake Michigan.

Nestled in a charming alleyway in the heart of Zihuatanejo, Cenaduría Ricomar stands out as a must-visit dining spot for anyone craving authentic local cuisine. Known for its delightful pozole, particularly on Thursdays—a beloved tradition in Guerrero—this cenaduría offers an inviting atmosphere with a refreshing cross breeze. Diners rave about the mixed meat pozole, which is both hearty and satisfying, complemented perfectly by a pitcher of Jamaica to wash it down.
Delicious and filling food. Our family of 6 thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered. The pozole was perfect and satisfying. We would come again!

We came for a dinner and very much enjoyed the pazole! I got the mixed meat and damn it hit good! We got a pitcher of Jamaica to wash it down. My family has been eating here for years. But it was the first time I had been in probably 15 years. The prices are very very fair!

El Canto de Las Sirenas, which translates to "The Song of the Mermaid," is a popular nightclub in Zihuatanejo. The club offers an addictive allure with live music, flamenco performances, and other dance shows by professionals. Owned by Jose Luis Cobo Lopez, the venue features his acoustic ballads and hosts various local and international musicians. The club is known for its late-night atmosphere and occasional early evening music during the high season from December to April.
Beautiful Spanish guitar and some of the best mezcal I’ve had. Cocktails were good too. Prices are great.

This evening we got the pleasure of hearing Jose Luis Cobo play at his #zihuatanejo nightclub called La Canta de Los Sirenas. Many years ago, he wrote the song by the same name which became a huge hit in Mexico.  He puts on an absolutely fantastic one man show, just him, his acoustic guitar, his charming personality and his beautiful voice.  It was a packed house and everyone was movin to the groovin. I am told that he is very active in the annual #Sailfest fundraiser event.  In fact, the event kick-off party is at his place. Musicians, sailboats and sunset cruises, what an awesome combination! Proceeds from Sailfest support the non-profit, Por Los Nino's, and are used to support the local schools, a much needed cause. Also playing tonight was Musica y Fuego.  Three very talented dudes in their own right!  You can tell they enjoy playing together. Their energy was rich and their tunes were delicious.  At various times throughout the evening they invited various other musicians, from the audience to play an impromptu song. These folks are doing it right down here.  Such talent! I'm looking forward to participating in and hearing all the talent that will be in town for Sailfest!  Exciting! It's only our fourth day here in Zihua and we are loving it! #lacantadelossirena #porlosninos #joseluiscobo #forthechildren #supportingschools #mexico #musicaenfuego

During my recent visit to La Perla Spa, located on the stunning Playa la Ropa, I indulged in a fabulous massage delivered by the talented Beny. The experience was truly rejuvenating and left me feeling refreshed. While there, I also had the pleasure of meeting another traveler who raved about the exceptional therapists at Playa Madera, adding to my list of must-try spots for relaxation in this beautiful area.
It was ok. The massage was more just rubbing up and down on my skin than anything. They put me in a room with three tables, which I thought was a bit odd. But then half way through they brought a man in to the same room to get a massage. He was close enough to me that if I had reached out I could have touched his head. And I was nude... Then I had to get dressed in the same room while the lady tried to hold up a tiny towel as cover. And the towels they use to wipe you down are like sandpaper.

Visitors traveling with their families will find Delfiniti to be a must-visit destination in Ixtapa. The facility provides opportunities for people to interact with dolphins and create lasting memories.
One of the best experiences of organized travel that my wife and I had. Totally 5 star. Mauricio a senior trainer engaged us in the most amazing encounters with dolphins I could ever imagine. Totally a first class place and venue. And like all the people from this region, nice, friendly and accommodating. Thank you Mauricio and all the staff of Definiti.

Xavier was a fantastic guide. My kids had a blast swimming with the dolphins.
Chris B — Google review
While I am aware that the issue of cetaceans in captivity is an important and contentious one, it is not one that I have given sufficient attention to offer much insight on. The dolphins my eight-year-old son and I interacted with certainly seemed healthy and happy enough, and the aquarium seemed more than large enough for the number of dolphins living in it (but I am not a marine biologist, and so have little more than my impressions to base this on). Moreover, everyone I observed (including my fellow visitors) treated the dolphins with kindness and respect. My son and I signed up for the full interaction, which I recommend if you can afford it. We made our reservations the day before with Jesús Rodríguez, who kindly obtained us a substantial discount. The experience itself is largely indescribable. Luz, the dolphin we interacted with, not only seemed healthy and happy as I mentioned, but also friendly and patient with her visitors. The interaction was informative as well as exciting, and so my son and I also learned a bit about dolphin behavior and physiology. As some other visitors have mentioned, photographs are strictly prohibited within the facilities. Notably, this restriction is not limited to interactions with the dolphins. While profitability may indeed be a factor here, I also suspect it reduces the likelihood of a visitor doing something stupid in an unsupervised interaction with one of the animals. The photographs provided by the professional photographers are indeed expensive--in our case, they cost almost as much as the visit itself. That said, the people responsible for the pictures are clearly professional photographers, such that the photographs are of much higher quality than anything I would have snapped with the camera on phone, or even with one of their cameras.
Brian N — Google review
Terrible experience. The dolphins are under terrible conditions, you can see that they are hurt. If you care about an animals, please DONT GO. Don’t be part of this business 😔
M. D — Google review
Very nice experience if you bring your family! My child was quite happy. Some comments below talk about cleanliness of water, but that's quite untrue. Water is fine. Price to swim with dolphins is $800 MXN (25 min), but that's fine if you think of money is being used to feed them 👌🏼 Negative point is that prices are not posted, so you must be up to negotiate with local people. You can get pro pictures starting from $150 MXN each
Leonardo G — Google review
Absolutely disgusting that there are still places that allow this. Poor dolphins are stuck in a tiny pool and showing signs of depression. So sad.
Andrea S — Google review
Very very heartbreaking. Dolphins belong in the wild, not a tank or other enclosure. These mammals have perfectly evolved to thrive in the ocean, where they deserve to live freely. Captivity simply cannot provide an adequate environment for these wild species. Do not support places like this.

The beach offers a picturesque setting with pristine white sands and clear turquoise waters, perfect for a relaxing vacation experience. Visitors can enjoy various activities such as golfing at nearby courses or arranging private dinners or sailing trips around Ixtapa.
Best beach in the area, even better than La Madera, La Ropa or Las Gatas in Zihuatanejo, although all three of those are nice as well. By far the longest stretch for walking. Big waves in the morning hours. Lots of locals on the weekends that make it magical & slightly crowded, but still completely navigable. Three entry points, two close to massage huts. Sand is perfect with no obstructions or rocks-you can go barefoot the whole beach! Sunsets are stunning, as expected. Sunrises are not spectacular-mountains block the view, but it is less crowded & not nearly as hot.

This top-notch facility guarantees a remarkable first-time encounter that will undoubtedly entice visitors to return.
Played twice Loved it Some sandy areas but they are working on the course Price is great
Rose W — Google review
There are a few nice holes on this course and some nice views. Otherwise, this is a very disappointing course. Most of the holes need a lot of maintenance and attention, the sand traps have almost no sand, and the fairways have almost no grass. The golf carts are in terrible condition with no working brakes. One thing we enjoyed about the course was the beer cart guy met us wherever we wanted him to mert us throughout the day with cold beer and water. Another nice thing is that this course is so poorly maintained compared to the other one in town, that there was no one else golfing there with us. So it is great for amateurs who don't like holding people up or being rushed through a busy course. A tio for anyone wanting to come here. Take a picture of your golf bag and all the glubs if you are renting them. We never received a sand wedge in one of our bags, then when we returned them the workers insisted that we lost it and made us pay 300 pesos for it, even though we never even had it to begin with.
Damian H — Google review
This is by far the most dilapidated and run down course I’ve ever played. It would be a lawsuit waiting to happen in the United States. I was worried about going over each bridge that it might collapse under us. Also, the fairways were pretty non-existent. The rental clubs were 20 years old and terrible and the golf cart was run down. The cost to play is $1050 mx pesos. The most people should be charged is $400 mx pesos. The staff was friendly, but truly, this course is a hazard. Palma Real Golf Course is definitely the way to go if you play golf in Ixtapa. That course also needs a lot of maintenance but it’s playable.

The beach is known for its cleanliness and tranquility, allowing individuals to relax in peace. Although the waves can be strong, one end of the beach offers a more gentle experience. It is recommended to bring a towel or something to sit on as there are no chairs available.
Best Time ever. Just make sure to have water shoes because there's a few rocks in the water. If you like to stay for the sunset bring bug repellent once the sun goes down mosquitoes come out like mad.

Enjoyed the clean quite beach. Waves where strong but at one end it wasn't bad at all. We packed a lunch and ate. There are bathrooms, 5 pesos per person. It doesn't have chairs. So bring a towel or something to sit on. It is also set up for handicap, so that's really cool. We enjoyed it and will be going back again.

beautiful quiet wonderful Beach for swimming good sand not a lot in the area except for a few hotels and none of them are busy there's massages at either end and restaurant at the one end better for the public

Mmm beachy-beachness. Boogie board and umbrella required.
Paul B — Google review
Great place to eat or catch a boat taxi to the island and eat there.
Chris B — Google review
Nice place to stay apart from the crow, part of the sea is calm almost always, long way walking to arrive with old people or babies. You can find shadow from trees if you arrive early.
Ilya S — Google review
A quiet getaway, sandy beach full of palm trees, located next to club med resort makes this an excellent day trip option to enjoy the ocean on this small bay , waves are slowed down by La Isla making it very friendly fior those who enjoy open water swimming. Expect no food vendors or water sports rentals, bring your beach towel and pick one of the bushes along the beach to enjoy this locals favorite spot. This is a pet friendly beach for those traveling with their four legged companion, and one last suggestion: when visiting don't forget to pick up your trash!
Pascal D — Google review
Currently here and enjoying the warm ocean water. Nice and quiet location as we’re staying at Club Med Ixtapa so it’s primarily just resort guests on the beach.

Specialty Museums
The Museo Arqueológico de la Costa Grande is a must-visit in Zihuatanejo, offering a fascinating insight into the local archaeological sites through its collection of cultural relics such as ancient pottery and weapons. It's a newer museum that showcases nearby archaeological finds and provides informative tours with knowledgeable guides who can offer insights into the history and interpretation of the exhibits. While most information is in Spanish, visitors can bring translators or use Google Lens for translation.
Lovely air-conditioned museum on the beach. Highly recommend to explore more of the culture and history of the land. Very helpful staff.
Pet D — Google review
Newer museum showcasing nearby archaeological find. I suggest taking a tour of this with Luis de la Maza. He picks you up at your hotel in an air conditioned van. No driving needed on back country roads! He is an excellent English speaking Zihuatanejo native and explains the history and interprets all of the Spanish information display panels- as they are only in Spanish. After the museum and ruins, on his tour you have a chance to visit a nearby villager’s home with a typical kitchen, tile floor and garden. He then takes you on a boat trip on a lovely mangrove lined lagoon to see pelicans, frigates and other native birds. Finally a lovely lunch under a shady palm frond covered patio. I had the garlic shrimp! Excellent food, no worries about food prep, super clean and fresh!!
Phyllis R — Google review
Very informative and clean! It's all in Spanish so bring a translator or Google lens if you can. The bathrooms are a little small so user beware. I had to fight off a crocodile to use the men's rooms but it was an easy fight GG no RE.

Great museum a number of interesting artifacts I really enjoyed visiting at 10 pesos to enter

As of December 10, 2024 the museum is closed for renovations. Not really a ranking, more of an information item.

Beloved this place it definitely is worth a visit!

Very nice people at the museum, knowledgeable, spoke good English, free cold water available for visitors, but all exhibits are in Spanish and I don't speak it, so didn't get much out of it.
Marketa S — Google review
Small, interesting museum. A lot of explanation of the cultural history of the area. Nice artifacts. All signs are in Spanish, but they provide a card in English that provides the gist of each era. Definitely worth a visit.

La Isla De Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, an attractive tourist destination, offers a boat ride to Playa Coral which takes approximately 15 minutes. This island provides numerous dining options for visitors to choose from. Additionally, it offers activities such as banana boat rides and snorkeling, both of which are highly recommended by previous guests. One side of the island features a beautiful beach while the other side is perfect for snorkeling.
Awesome place to spend a day. Especially if you want to swim. Nice swimming area and lots of activities available. Lots of food places with super friendly people. I noticed a lot of local people go there with their families. We walked along the rocky trail. If you are older or have problems hiking I recommend taking a boat taxi there. Lots available.

Wildlife refuge
Public beach
Cocodrilario Playa Linda, a wildlife refuge, offers an enjoyable experience for those interested in observing crocodiles and other reptiles in their natural habitat. While the surrounding area may lack interest with its unappealing restaurants and dirty beach, the main attraction of this place lies within its fascinating collection of diverse wildlife. Visitors are advised to arrive early when the temperature is cooler to increase their chances of spotting crocodiles outside the water.
Here's a short review based on the information I found: This place is a great spot for a leisurely stroll and wildlife spotting. You can see crocodiles, birds, turtles, and iguanas up close, all without spending a dime.
A C — Google review
It was an awesome experience seeing the crocodiles and other animals. It is near the beach and lots of little shops around.
Eri R — Google review
This place was not disappointing! Lots of crocodiles! The beach in our opinion was a disappointment. Nothing special about it.
Grace P — Google review
This place is near to the parking on the beach and the dock. In the middle of the river close to the bridge, is a lookout, where can see the different birds and lizards. Is free to see and you can spend a few minutes there.
Israel N — Google review
We visited Cocodrilario Playa Linda for the first time on a Saturday. There are many different species of birds and crocodiles and iguanas. The wildlife refuge is small in comparison to the size of Playa Linda. The wildlife are well taken care of, yet the humans have taken the majority of the space that was originally for wildlife.
Jody C — Google review
You can't beat the warm waters. This is a great place for families since the currents were not too strong. We arrived in morning and shore was full of debris but staff cleaned it up before day got busy. Loads of shops to look through. We ate in a delicious shop hidden between main Street and beach: breaded chicken breast, rice, salad and cheese and mushroom quesadilla with hand made tortillas, which were delicious. My picky kids loved everything.
Jess Q — Google review
Amazing place to see the crocodiles and other birds reptiles on their natural habitat. Don't stand below the birds nest ...they might give you a warm present.
C M — Google review
This is a very interesting place to see. It has many varieties of wild life. There are wooden strokes, pink spoonbills, yellow feet strokes, turtles, crocodiles and lizards. And they all come here to have their babies, their so cute. It is under construction due to being damage from the hurricane but still able to see everything. Fun to see before you head to the beach ⛱️🏖️⛱️.
