Nohoch Mul Pyramid is the tallest Mayan pyramid in the Yucatan peninsula, offering visitors a chance to climb its 120 steps and enjoy stunning jungle views. Located within the Coba Ruins, this site has gained popularity due to its well-preserved structures and authentic Mayan atmosphere. Exploring the area on a bike carriage allows for easy access to different ruins, while a swim in the Cenote adds to the experience. Visitors can also opt for guided tours or explore independently.
I went to 3 different ruins on my trip and this was by far my favorite. That shade and the forest was magic.
Isaac T — Google review
Recommended it if you are near Tulum area. It's about an hour and a half walk, you can rent a bike or they drive you with a tricycle, about 6km all in all to see all the sites. It's surrounded by the jungle so plenty of shade and a nice walk. Big parking on site, cost us 70 pesos and as usual at all archeological sites in Yucatan you pay two fees, one to enter as a tourist and one ticket for the entrance to the site.
Lisa O — Google review
Really nice walk through the forest with a nice pyramids. Great place to be in a hot day as you are in a shade all the time. We went there really early so no one was there which was nice to have the place just for us. After an hour it started to filling up with people so I recommend to go early.
Veronika O — Google review
Its a nice place to visit. To really appreciate the whole trip its best to have a guide to tell you the history and you could understand what its all about. Lots of things to see. Trip on a bike to the ruins was awesome. Nature at its best.
Julio E — Google review
Amazing experience and would definitely recommend it. Not as pretty as Chichén Itzá and it is genuinely 'in ruins', but its in the middle of the jungle and has a more authentic Mayan feeling across the area. We got a bike carriage to get around the different ruins across the site and we had all had a swim in the Cenote which was fab! We went when we could walk up to the top of the Mayan Pyramid, and once you are at the top the view is simply stunning with a 360' panorama over all the tree tops!
Pete B — Google review
Amazing experience, definitely recommend going here with a tour if possible. We went before covid so we could walk up the Mayan Ruin. In case this is allowed again, the walk up is steep so you need good trainers and to be extra cautious. Once at the top, the view is simply stunning. A must go for everyone!!
Tina S — Google review
Amazing experience. You must rent a bike unless you have all day to walk. Much easier to bike. Historical signage is super helpful and the trails are well maintained. The historical significance is awe inspiring. Highly recommend!
Pete K — Google review
One of the most beautiful places I've ever been to! After getting a little lost while walking around we ran into a breathtaking view... Of course I say that... But you judge for yourself! Just make sure to take water, food and comfy walking shoes.. Oh and have time handy cause there is an incredible amount to see!

Coba Pyramid Ruins is home to the impressive Nohoch Mul pyramid, which stands tall amidst the lush jungle. While climbing the temple is currently restricted due to the pandemic, visitors can explore other ruins within a short walking distance or opt for a bike rental to reach the main attractions spread across 6km. The site offers guided tours for historical context and lore, making it a fascinating day trip.
We arrived a 9am so had the place mostly to ourselves before the tour groups arrived. Our guide Ami was amazing. We hired the tricycle transport for our group. Everyone was friendly and informative. For our group of 6 we ended up paying just under $30 usd each for both entrance fees/90 minute guided tour & tricycle transport. We got to see several spider monkeys and wild turkeys. Definitely worth a stop. And hopefully they figure out a wooden staircase option so you can climb to the top again--because I hear the views are amazing up there.
Kirstiann H — Google review
Interesting place. It is quite a walk but worth exploring. You can also rent bicycles however I would always walk. It makes you feel more connected to the place and contemplate the ruins.
Christoph M — Google review
This was a wonderfully restored archeological site. My favorite part of this tour was that you have the option of renting bikes to ride, or hiring someone to pedal you to the sites. We had a private tour guide to show us the sites. Without that I’m not sure how much information we would have been able to find about the site. I remember minimal signage.
Tammy B — Google review
Impressive ruins. It’s getting to be more than a few fees to get into the park, but a good experience overall. 120 for entrance to the area local fee + 80 for parking + 100 for entry = 200 pesos total per person
Zaha W — Google review
Very interesting and not very busy, we opted to go here rather than Chi-chenitsa because it was an hour closer to where we were staying and we were not disappointed. We reluctantly payed for a tour guide but were glad we did because he was very knowledgeable about the history and culture. It’s in the jungle so no breeze and very hot and humid so if you’re not up for a hike you might want to rent a bike. About 2 kilometers to the farthest pyramid so it’s about a 90 minute to 2 hour tour.

Visiting the Coba Pyramid in Quintana Roo, Mexico, was an unforgettable experience! This majestic, ancient structure is not only a stunning historical site but also an opportunity to connect with the past in a way that most other ruins don’t allow. Coba, once a major Mayan city, has one of the tallest pyramids in the region, Nohoch Mul, standing at 42 meters (138 feet). It’s a remarkable feat of engineering, and standing at the top, you can’t help but marvel at the ingenuity of the ancient Maya civilization. The history of Coba dates back to the 1st century AD, and the pyramid itself was an important ceremonial and astronomical center. What makes this pyramid so special, especially when compared to others like the one at Chichen Itza, is that it’s one of the few remaining pyramids you can still climb. It’s a rare privilege, and the climb is definitely a unique experience. That being said, be prepared for a challenging ascent! The steps are very steep, and there are no safety rails, so you’ll need to be cautious as you make your way to the top. It’s a strenuous climb, and your legs will burn—seriously, if you’re not in shape, you’ll feel it! But the reward at the top is absolutely worth it: the panoramic views of the surrounding jungle are breathtaking, and it gives you a real sense of the scale of the Mayan world. It’s important to note that the climb can be dangerous. There have been reports of accidents due to the steepness and lack of safety measures, so take your time, wear appropriate footwear, and stay aware of your surroundings. It's all part of the adventure, but safety should always be your priority. If you’re comparing it to Chichen Itza, the differences are striking. While Chichen Itza may be more iconic, Coba offers a much more intimate experience with the ruins. You can get up close to the pyramid, and because it’s less crowded, the experience feels more personal and connected to the past. Overall, I highly recommend a visit to the Coba Pyramid if you’re in the area. It’s a fantastic workout, an educational experience, and a chance to witness history firsthand. Don’t forget to bring water and a camera—trust me, you’ll want to capture the incredible views from the top! Also, don't forget to buy some gifts from the local sellers.
Jay — Google review
I had a nice experience at Coba ruins. The walk through the jungle is very enjoyable and gives a unique atmosphere. The ruins themselves are interesting but not as impressive as other sites – I’d recommend Ek Balam if you want something more special. Still, Coba is a good option for a half-day trip from Tulum, especially if you enjoy nature and a relaxed visit.
Stephan F — Google review
The history there is very interesting and is better to have a guide. We paid 60pesos for the car, 100pesos each for an entrance in the parking(that i don’t understand), 95pesos each to enter the zone with the pyramids and 65pesos each for bikes. Be very careful with choosing the guide, at the entrance they charge 1000pesos and then you can find others for less. Also I told the lady that wanted 1000pesos that i will check the place and see if we need a guide and se said “you will see that you need and you will come back” which was rude. We found a nice guide after that which charged 500pesos. The bikes are old but is not a problem, are good for what you need there.

Located near the northern edge of the area, Juego de Pelota y Primera estela is a well-restored ball court. During a visit, it was not crowded with only one larger group at the other side of the site. The court features small tablets with information and is surrounded by lush greenery. Visitors can also find another play field in the vicinity, which some consider to be even better than the first one. Overall, this particular site offers an interesting and enjoyable experience for visitors.

One of the highlights is climbing Nohoch Mul, the highest pyramid in the area. Guided tours provide insights into the culture, sacrificial offerings, and historical significance of the site's symbols and natural resources.
This place is amazing! They were doing renovations but we fully enjoyed the bike ride into the forest to check out the further sites. Believe it was $8 but was covered in our private tour with quest concierge services. It is definetly a 1 of of a kind experience to bike ride through the forest to check out mayan ruins.

Not well maintained, the bicycles were nice. Infrastructure needs work. Take your own water, bug sray, and a towel. It is hot and pure jungle, of course. Entry was $150 pesos. Guide offered for 1000 pesos. We declined.
Kim H — Google review
This place is full of ancient ruins, when you reach the place park your car to the closest park to the gate, it is the cheapest one. You will need about 2 hours to finish the tour. You can higher one of the guides there to have some fun learning about the Mayans. The views are beautiful on the ocean. You will find a lot of iguanas and some colored lizards 🦎. I personally liked the decending God illustration, the feet towards heaven and the head on the ground. A bird like a peacock 🦚 followed us for about 5 minutes, it didn't heart but we didn't know why. I included his photo. Don't forget always to take water with you. The people are so peaceful.
Karam S — Google review
This place was amazing and our Mayan guide was very thorough with the history and the facts. We learned a lot from him, he was amazing, and our bicycle taxi person was so respectful when we had to get on and off, being two senior ladies. The weather was perfect, and they have a public bathroom outside of the ruins, so make sure to use it before you enter. They do have two entrance fees one for parking and one for the entrance fee.
Josie O — Google review
This is a must do while in the vicinity. We have been back twice in two years, and every time we become more educated on what life was like an ancient times. If you are lucky enough to have Pedro as your tour guide, you will be enchanted by his storytelling of the Mayan people in life in Coba. Plan to spend a long time so you can sit quietly and peacefully among the place and listen for wildlife. We were lucky enough to see wild turkeys, iguanas, and several varieties of birds. Definitely rent bikes, but make sure they fit you well as they can become uncomfortable quickly as we learned that day.
Jessamyn H — Google review
What an incredible place to visit!! I’m told it’s a less popular spot to view the ruins and I cannot see why. The entry fee is very reasonable and we got a private guide which we also found very reasonable! Pedro was very informative, had great stories, and visuals. He was great with my son as well, keeping him engaged and telling age appropriate versions of the history. We HIGHLY recommend the bikes to see the second part of the site. We had so much fun riding them and I think we saw a lot more with their use. We were all thrilled to see the snack shack near the “Big Hill.” It was a little under construction when we visited in July, and I’m excited to see the improvements they are making!! I wish I could donate money to them so they could rebuild more buildings!! 6000 buildings are scattered throughout the site - but the cost is so high to uncover and maintain. And one of our favorite meals was at the restaurant that sits right outside the gates!! Restaurante Xaibe. Fabulous Sopa de Lima, handmade tortillas, and Mayan style pork!
Caroline P — Google review
Great ruins, love the history. It is so nice to go to a heritage site and not be mobed by venders trying to sell over priced items. You muat go to Coba!

This was one of my favorite attractions in the Yucatan area. We got a personal guide and the experience was great. The Coba ruins is HUGE and many parts have not yet been excavated and restored yet. Our guide explained that Coba is like a Mayan highway where people from different areas come to meet and trade. Aside from temples, there are also other structures like gaming areas and many tablets that helped illuminated the Mayan culture, including tablets that mentioned some powerful women rulers as well as the end of the world story.

Cenote Tankach-Ha is a stunning underground swimming hole located near the Coba archaeological zone. It offers crystal-clear blue water, fish swimming around, and multiple jumping platforms at different heights for those seeking an adrenaline rush. The cenote is hidden deep in the forest and not very popular with tourists, providing a serene and uncrowded experience. Visitors can descend through a cave to reach this beautiful cenote, where they can enjoy snorkeling or simply marvel at the majestic surroundings.
Beautiful underground cave cenote with deep turquoise water, a few cute black fishes, bats, and two jumping platforms. Bathrooms and changing rooms are available but no lockers. 100 pesos for entry. Our favourite cenote so far, absolutely stunning!
Fanni K — Google review
This is a cool spot, a cenote that is completely covered underground. you descend into the cenote by a spiral staircase, and there are jumping pointds at about 5 and 8 meters up the stairs. the colour of the water is a lovely bright blue, and it was lit by a floodlight. nice setting.
Nathan G — Google review
Super cool ambiance with crystal clear water jumping platforms and bads in the air.
Roman M — Google review
Fantastic cenote. We went before the tours from Coba arrived, at around 12 o’clock, and we were the only people there! There is a 5m and 10m diving board if anyone is feeling brave enough!
Will C — Google review
Nice cenote with really deep water. It's almost uncomfortable to swim above the depth sometimes, even though you can still almost see the bottom - or maybe that's why :) It's one of the bigger ones, so it's very easy to swim in. What's unique about it are the two jumping platforms from which you can dive into the water. However, being wimps, we didn't jump in. There are very few people in it, we were alone most of the time, so you can fully enjoy the majesty of the cave. Entrance was still 100 pesos and vests were optional.
Jakub C — Google review
Stunning. Bats, fish, 5m jumping board. Wow Arrived at 9am only people in it, amazing experience.
David S — Google review
I was genuinely scared because this place feels very spooky but after 30 min or so, I started loving it. Super calm and quiet Cenote, we were mostly alone (1 other couples) however when tour bus arrives , it gets super crowded. Shower and toilet in place but no lockers. The entrance is 100 MXP and if you want life jackets that is 50 pesos extra.
Mahoor R — Google review
Fantastic experience! Spiral staircase to descend is a little dated, but sturdy. The view and water is stunning. The water is extremely clear. Was told the depth of the cenote is about 45 feet. Very much worth the stop. They have bathroom changing areas as well, and life jackets to rent.

You need cash. Entrance is 130 pesos per person. The place is quiet and pleasant with clean changing rooms, toilets and showers. A nice cool down in the hot part of the day. Life jackets and swimming masks are available on site. It is not wheelchair accessible. The only drawback is the bumpy road to the place for about one kilometer.

We went on a Saturday noon and it was empty, there was noone else. The entrance is 130pesos and renting snorkeling masks and lifejackets is optional You have to walk 8 metres down through the stairs and then magic! The water is Crystal clear, and really really cold. Jt has a depth of 50m, but you can't tell as the water is so clean. 100% experience away from the touristic ones.

Hidden cenote that is off the beaten path. 100 pesos to enter. Life jackets are available but not mandatory. Went early afternoon on a weekday, and at most, their were 8 other people swimming. At one point I was the only one swimming. Spent 2 hours. Bring your own food/snacks as their are none available to purchase. Also FYI their generator is a little loud but it didn't bother me.

This is an awesome site. We didn't get in the water, but others said it was a nice temperature. The water was a clear blue-green. The cavern is amazing. A must- visit. No words from me can truly describe this wonder.
