Visited the Mattanchery/Dutch Palace in Kochi and it was an incredible experience! The place beautifully showcases the rich heritage and architecture of Kerala’s royal era. It’s also known as Dutch Palace as the Dutch had renovated the palace as a gift to the Kochi royals. The murals and artifacts offer a glimpse into the fascinating history of the Kochi kingdom and its cultural connections with the Dutch and Portuguese. The palace is very well maintained, clean, and organized, making it a delight for history lovers and tourists alike. A must-visit spot to truly appreciate the legacy and charm of old Kochi!
Gaurav K — Google review
This is a really fascinating place. An absolute must visit. The AI description here is very accurate. The palace looks bland and uninteresting from outside but inside it’s an absolute delight. The interiors are incredible, especially the murals and ceilings, as are most of the exhibits. The entry price - 5 rupees - is ridiculously low. It should be increased significantly for foreigners. We spent a happy hour here and could have spent more. The only disappointment we found with the place is that the entrance and surrounds need to be tarted up a bit to make the exterior look more attractive. Otherwise, top marks

A must-visit historical spot in Kochi! The Mattancherry Palace beautifully showcases Kerala’s royal heritage with its stunning murals, wooden architecture, and ancient artifacts. It offers a great glimpse into the lives of the Cochin royal family and the unique blend of Portuguese, Dutch, and Kerala styles. There’s good parking space, though it’s not very well maintained, and the entry ticket for Indians is just ₹5 — totally worth it for the experience!

This was the first old palace of mattanchery built by the Dutch. It's a relatively small palace but it's very detailed and has some of the best old maps of Cochin. There's a lot of enthnography of the royals and the way they lived. I loved reading about the history. I was looking forward to the murals but they are faded and hard to see. I enjoyed the architecture and the maps more. I was surprised to see that there isn't a single toilet within the palace. I guess the kings and queens did their business in the outside like everyone else at the time.

Historic palace in Jew Town, originally built by the Portuguese and later renovated by the Dutch. Simple from outside but known for beautiful Kerala murals, royal artifacts and coronation hall of Cochin kings. Entry is affordable and right next to Pazhayannur Bhagavathy Temple and Paradesi Synagogue.

Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica in Fort Cochin is a reconstructed 1880s Catholic church with a rich history dating back to the 1500s when it was originally built by the Portuguese. This magnificent structure stands out in dazzling white against the lush greenery of Kochi and boasts two spires that serve as a landmark for both locals and tourists.
A beautiful Gothic-style church, rich in history and charm. Though reconstructed, it retains its grandeur and architectural elegance. One of its most unique features is the statue of Jesus seated on a chair, which is quite rare and adds a special character to the church. The seven original paintings above the altar are still preserved and add to the spiritual and artistic appeal of the space. It’s easily accessible from the main areas of Fort Kochi and has good parking facilities, making visits convenient. A must-visit for those interested in architecture, history, or a moment of quiet reflection.

Beautiful Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica in Fort Kochi. Free entrance. You can take pictures with your phone but not videos. Most people take their shoes off although there is no such rule. Of course we did the same. It’s one of the eight basilicas in India. during the British invasion in 1795. One of the decorative granite pillars of the destroyed church is preserved as a relic in the basilica. Bishop D. Joao Gomas Ferreira who reached Kochi in 1887 spearheaded an initiative to reconstruct the cathedral. The reconstruction work was a success and in 1905, it was again consecrated by the bishop of Damao, Dom Sebastiao Jose Pereira. It was in 1984 that Pope John Paul II raised the status of the cathedral to that of a basilica.

The grand, old-world interiors and the mix of Indo-European and Gothic architecture here are really beautiful. It's amazing that this 500-year-old church is still standing so tall and strong! The interiors definitely have that classic Portuguese feel. We visited as they were closing for lunch, so we didn't get as much time as we'd have liked. It's also conveniently located near the Cochin Water Metro, making it easy to get to from the main city.

Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica Fort Kochi. This is one of the nine basilicas in Kerala. Originally constructed by the Portuguese in 1505, it was demolished by the British and reconstructed in 1905. The structure looks very impressive and is maintained very well. Since we did not have time, saw the cathedral only from outside. Will pay a visit when I get more time some day in the future.

Cherai Beach, located on the fringes of Kochi, is a serene stretch of sand known for its natural beauty and tranquility. Visitors can enjoy activities such as walking, swimming, shell collecting, and even spot dolphins in the Arabian Sea. The beach is part of a larger tourist attraction that includes Vypeen Island, Fort Kochi Beach, Kodanad Elephant Training Centre, Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary, and Marine Drive.
Cherai Beach is one of the best beaches in Kerala, a fair facility available for showers after roam around the beach. A bit crowded but manageable with a lot of options for food joints around.
Deepak S — Google review
One among the finest beaches nearby Kochi (Cochin). The sandy beach and great sunset views would give you memorable moments. There are foods and souvenirs available here but there is a good scope for improvement.
Sahadevan ( — Google review
Beautiful beach with clean sand. Only fun n frolic could be seen around with youngsters and accompanying parents. Lovely hotels and good food though Kerala fish "Karimeen" was not easily available.
Ponsy C — Google review
"Clean, Calm, and Perfect for a Relaxing Getaway!" Cherai Beach is one of the most beautiful and peaceful beaches near Kochi. With golden sands, gentle waves, and a clean shoreline, it's perfect for a relaxing day out.
G G — Google review
What didn’t work well: Parking charged at around ₹30/hour without designated slots or secure fencing. I had to park in mud and struggled to exit—a guard set the fee, but no proper system or shelter. The beach area is tight and congested, especially during evenings. Space to walk, sit, or play is limited. The shoreline has noticeably narrowed—sea erosion seems to have taken over the sand, reducing usable area. Waste and debris are common, especially after high tides. There’s no visible cleaning schedule or waste management system. Few signboards or markers to guide visitors on safe zones, entry points, or amenities. Numerous resorts and restaurants line the edge, but prices are high, making the experience feel more commercial than relaxing. Safety feels uneven—lifeguards are present only at the main beach, leaving parts of the shore less monitored. The narrow access roads are often crowded or uneven, making approach and exit difficult. Positive aspects to highlight: The location is scenic—where backwaters meet the sea; gentle tides often make it suitable for dolphin spotting. Early mornings and off-peak hours offer calm, peaceful views and a quieter stretch to enjoy. A few local vendors sell light bites such as fried banana or chilli—simple and tasty. Suggestions for improvement: Create organized, secure parking with shade or paved surfaces—and consider validating or waiving fees for visitors. Increase frequency of beach cleaning crews and establish designated waste bins to manage both tidal and on-site debris. Install clear signage and maps to guide visitors to access points, seating areas, restrooms, safety zones, and lifeguard-watched areas. Expand the beach footprint or undertake erosion control measures to restore walking and leisure space. Offer affordable lounge spaces or shaded seating for families and groups, separate from high-cost resorts. Consider extending lifeguard coverage to broader areas or offering beach safety warnings during peak hours. Overall recommendation: Cherai Beach has charm and potential, especially for early-morning strolls or a quick getaway. However, the current experience is hampered by parking hassles, limited space, unclear safety measures, and inadequate cleanliness. With basic infrastructure upgrades and better visitor guidance, it could become a much more welcoming destination. od experience.

Kerala Folklore Museum is a unique attraction in Kochi that offers a glimpse into the region's rich cultural heritage. The museum showcases traditional architecture, crafts, folk art, and antiques across three floors. Visitors can also enjoy live performances such as Kathakali dances and traditional martial arts. Additionally, there's a handicraft shop where you can purchase interesting souvenirs.
An Absolute Gem! A Journey Through Kerala's Artistic Soul The Kerala Folklore Museum isn't just a museum; it's a breathtaking portal into the heart of South India's cultural heritage. From the moment you approach the stunning three-story structure, which is a masterpiece in itself, you know you are in for a special experience. An Architectural Marvel The building is a conscious recreation of traditional Malabar architecture, using ancient doors, wood carvings, and tiles sourced from over 100-year-old Kerala homes. Every pillar, ceiling, and doorway is a handcrafted work of art. The sheer ambition and love poured into creating this space are palpable and set the stage for the treasures within. The museum houses an unparalleled collection of over 6,000 artifacts. You'll find a magnificent array of: · Traditional Art Forms: Intricate costumes, elaborate headdresses, and musical instruments used in Theyyam, Kathakali, and other classical dance forms. · Ancient Antiquities: A fascinating collection of jewelry, stone sculptures, wood carvings, and bronze lamps that tell the story of Kerala's social and religious history. · Everyday Heritage: The museum beautifully preserves everyday objects, from ancient kitchen utensils to farming tools, giving you a genuine sense of life in old Kerala. More Than a Museum: A Living Culture What sets this museum apart is its vibrant energy. The attached Folklore Theatre offers daily performances of Kathakali and other traditional art forms, bringing the static exhibits to life. A Must-Do in Kochi For anyone interested in history, art, architecture, or simply experiencing the authentic soul of Kerala, this museum is an unmissable destination. It's a peaceful, educational, and visually stunning escape from the bustle of Kochi. The passion of the founders and the staff's knowledge make the visit deeply enriching. Verdict: Do not leave Kochi without visiting this iconic place. It is, without a doubt, one of the most beautifully curated and inspiring museums I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. A true five-star experience

This private museum houses an impressive collection of both antique and contemporary artifacts, each reflecting rich cultural heritage and artistic value. Spread across three spacious floors, the exhibits are well-organized and thoughtfully curated. The place is clean, well-maintained, and offers a pleasant environment for visitors. However, the entry fee of ₹200 per person feels somewhat steep, especially for local visitors. Additionally, the staff at the entrance and reception appeared rather indifferent, showing a noticeable inclination to engage primarily with foreign tourists, which was disappointing.
Harsha D — Google review
The Kerala Folklore Museum has an impressive and diverse collection that gives you a glimpse into Kerala’s culture and heritage. However, the space felt a little cluttered and tightly packed, which made it slightly overwhelming at times, with some of the displays feeling repetitive. The staff were courteous, though the focus seemed more on sales than on guiding visitors through the exhibits. Overall, it’s an interesting stop if you’re keen on history and art, but the presentation could be improved for a more enjoyable experience.
Proyasee T — Google review
Visited out of curiosity and aesthetics, but it seems dusty due to lot of old art and crafts lying in that small space. Someone with dust allergy can avoid. Its a 3 floor building having collection of art, craft by historical artists. Paintings were only replicas not original. They even exhibit and sell some of the items. A tourist who came in asked about a krishna idol made of sandalwood. She replied that its just ₹1.95 lakh.. 😅🥹🥹 Charged ₹200 for entry & extra ₹100 for taking camera. There is parking. Just a 2 min walk will show vidya vihar road where u can find Mohanlal sir name on board of colony..

KERALA FOLKLORE MUSEUM Visited this museum while on a trip to Kochi. We were staying at the Keys Lemon Tree Hotel and this museum was just 100 metres away from the hotel. The museum is curated and managed by Mr.George J Thaliath and his family. A very large collection of artifacts from various parts of the country and the world are on display. There is shortage of space because of the sheer number of items. Hence, detailed description of each item is not available. Still, it is a feast for the eyes of people who are interested in antiques and artifacts of various types. There is an entrance fee of Rs 200 per person. If you wish to take photographs, even on a mobile, there is an additional fee of Rs 100. Footwear is not permitted inside the museum. You need to keep them outside in the rack provided. We could see many visitors including those from overseas coming there to visit the museum.

St. Francis CSI Church, located in Fort Kochi, Kerala, is a historically significant site as it is the first European church built in India. The church has witnessed the colonial struggles of different European powers and today attracts visitors from around the world. Despite its simple architecture, the church's stained glass windows and beautiful porticoes exude an old-world charm that captivates admirers. Additionally, it houses an antique collection of hand-operated cloth fans that are still manually operated with ropes.
The St. Francis Church is believed to be one of the oldest churches built by the Europeans in India. The famous explorer Vasco da Gama, the first Portuguese sailor to reach the shores of Kerala, died in 1524 during his third visit to Kochi. He was buried in this Church. After 14 years, his body was taken back to Portugal. His burial spot inside the church is clearly marked out and has drawn visitors ever since. Visitors should take their shoes off.

This is the oldest European church in India, and visiting it was a deeply meaningful part of our trip. Peter explained the fascinating history of the church. It was originally built by Portuguese Franciscan friars in the early 1500s. Later, when the Dutch took over Kochi in the 1600s, they converted the church to a Protestant place of worship. Eventually the British arrived and made it Anglican. Today, it belongs to the Church of South India. This church has seen so many chapters of history and faith, and Peter made it all come alive for us. One of the most interesting things we saw was the tomb of Vasco da Gama. He died in Kochi in 1524 and was buried here, but years later his son had his body moved to Lisbon. The original tombstone still remains, and standing beside it was surreal. My five and seven year old daughters were curious about why we had to take off our shoes before entering, since it’s not a temple. Peter explained that many churches in Kerala follow this tradition out of respect, and also to protect the beautiful Victorian tiles inside which were imported from the UK. That made perfect sense, and it taught my children something new about how local culture blends with spiritual practice. Inside the church I felt peaceful and reflective. I took a quiet moment to pray for my family and friends, and I left feeling calm and grateful. The atmosphere was simple and serene, and the building carried such a sense of history. Peter was outstanding. He made the experience personal, educational, and memorable. We are so thankful for his guidance. This was one of the highlights of our day in Fort Kochi and I highly recommend visiting the church—especially if you can go with someone like Peter.

A Historic Gem in Kochi with Timeless Charm My visit to St. Francis Church in Fort Kochi was both peaceful and fascinating. This is one of the oldest European churches in India, originally built in 1503, and it carries a deep sense of history. The moment you step inside, you can feel the calm atmosphere and the weight of centuries gone by. The architecture is simple yet beautiful — high wooden ceilings, whitewashed walls, and large windows letting in soft natural light. There’s something very serene about the space; it invites you to slow down and reflect. This church is also famous for being the original burial place of Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer. Though his remains were later taken to Portugal, his tombstone still lies here and is a significant historical spot for visitors. The surrounding churchyard is equally peaceful, with well-kept lawns and tall trees providing shade. It’s a lovely place to sit quietly for a while after exploring Fort Kochi’s busy streets. I was impressed with how well the church has been preserved. Despite its age, it remains a functioning place of worship, and visitors are welcome to attend services. The caretakers are friendly and happy to share historical details, making the visit even more meaningful. Tip: Visit in the morning when the area is quieter. Combine your trip with a walk around Fort Kochi to enjoy other heritage sites nearby. Remember to dress modestly as it is still an active church.

St. Francis CSI Church in Fort Kochi, built in 1503, is India’s oldest European church and a remarkable historical monument. Originally constructed by the Portuguese, it features a distinctive gabled timber roof and a blend of architectural styles reflecting Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences. The church is famous for once housing Vasco da Gama’s tomb before his remains were moved to Portugal. Inside, visitors admire the wooden pulpit, old floor tiles, and a functional cloth fan, all preserving its colonial charm. The Hill Palace Museum, located in Kochi, Kerala, is a 19th-century palace complex that has been transformed into an archaeological and heritage museum. It was originally the residence of the Maharaja of Cochin and now houses a vast collection of artifacts from the Cochin royal family. The museum boasts an impressive display of oil paintings, murals, swords, manuscripts, and other items used by the royal family.
Visited the Hill Palace Museum recently and it was a great experience. The place is full of historic treasures — from royal crowns and weapons to ancient artifacts and coins. It really gives a deep insight into the rich heritage of the Cochin Royal Family. The museum is set in a large, peaceful area with plenty of space to walk around, relax, and enjoy the greenery. The palace grounds also include a deer park and a small garden which add to the charm. Fun fact: This place has been featured in many Malayalam movies, including the famous Manichitrathazhu, which adds a nostalgic touch. Overall, it's a must-visit for history lovers and families. Calm vibe, friendly staff, and a great way to spend a peaceful few hours.

Hill Palace Museum, Thripunithura We visited the Hill Palace Museum last Sunday afternoon and had a wonderful experience. The museum is open on weekends from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Tickets are available at the entrance — ₹50 per adult, and parking costs ₹30. Before entering, visitors are required to leave their footwear outside. The museum was once the royal palace of the Cochin royal family, and it beautifully preserves the grandeur of that era. Inside, you’ll find an impressive collection of royal artifacts including chariots, weapons, furniture, crowns, and ornaments. There are also informative displays that provide deep insights into the history of Kochi and how it evolved into one of Kerala’s major cities. A highlight of our visit was the corridor leading to a serene pond behind the palace — walking through it felt like stepping back in time. However, it was disheartening to see some visitors vandalizing the walls. Please be respectful and report any such behavior to the authorities. After the pond, there’s a deer park where you can observe deer up close. While some say not to feed them, it appears they are raised in a farm-like environment and are quite friendly, often approaching the fence. We ended our visit with a peaceful walk back to the parking area under the shade of tall trees. It was a lovely way to spend the evening. Highly recommended if you're in the area or visiting Thripunithura!

Walking through these blocks gives a glimpse into the royal lifestyle and architectural brilliance of that era. The museum itself is incredibly well-curated, displaying 14 categories of artifacts including the Cochin royal family’s crown and ornaments, majestic furniture, intricate paintings, ancient coins, weapons, and stone sculptures. I have visited many museums in India across states. This one ranks amongst the very best. Though not grandeur, it is beautifully maintained. Not only the interiors but the garden area, fountains and pond. There is a guide at each section to explain about the artefacts, history of the museum and they can speak English and Malayalam. The exhibits are well maintained. There is also a kiosk at each section which has an Audio Visual explaining about the exhibits of the section in English. Braille language is also available. For the price, it is an excellent piece of history that is highly recommended to visit.

The Paradesi Synagogue in Mattancherry holds immense cultural significance as one of the oldest active synagogues in the Commonwealth, built in 1568 by the Paradesi Jewish community—comprising Sephardic Jews who settled in Kochi after fleeing persecution in Europe. It symbolizes the longstanding presence and contributions of the Jewish community to Kerala's multicultural heritage and global spice trade. The synagogue was built on land generously granted by the Raja of Kochi, reflecting a harmonious relationship between the Jewish settlers and local rulers. Architecturally, it blends Kerala and European styles, featuring unique elements like hand-painted Chinese porcelain floor tiles, elegant Belgian glass chandeliers, and intricately carved teak woodwork.Culturally, the Paradesi Synagogue serves not only as a place of worship but as a testament to religious tolerance, coexistence, and the rich diversity of Kerala’s society. It houses sacred artifacts, including ancient Torah scrolls adorned with silver and gold, and has become an important heritage site attracting visitors worldwide who come to appreciate its historical, religious, and artistic value. The synagogue stands as a symbol of resilience and continued legacy of the Jewish community in the region.

Keshava Rama Varma, Maharaja of Cochin write.. "When I, the Raja of Cochin, first offered a parcel of land to the Jewish community who sought refuge in my kingdom, I could not have imagined that centuries later travelers from every corner of the world would still tread those tiled floors in awe. The Paradesi Synagogue, as they call it today, stands not just as a house of worship, but as a symbol of what happens when tolerance meets craftsmanship. I remember their leaders approaching me weary from exile, yet proud of their faith and trade. They brought knowledge, commerce, and a quiet dignity to our port city. Granting them space beside my own palace was no accident, it was a gesture of respect, and perhaps, a little curiosity. They built their synagogue in 1568, modest in size but rich in soul. white walls, a red-tiled roof, and soon enough, brass lamps and Belgian chandeliers that would put even my court’s ceiling to shame. The Dutch came, the Portuguese came, and still this little sanctuary stood its ground. I’ve watched it survive bombardments, colonizers, and time itself. Its blue and white Chinese tiles no two alike still whisper stories of faraway lands that traded with us. The carved teak ark gleams with quiet devotion, and the great clock tower, added later, proudly displays the numerals of many tongues: Malayalam, Hebrew, Arabic, Roman. A clock that tells time to everyone, no matter their faith now that’s a kingdom I can be proud of." I will admit, the place isn’t perfect. Time has a way of dulling even royal gifts. The wooden beams creak, the brass grows tired, and the guides, though earnest, sometimes forget the finer details of its creation. And alas, the Jewish community that once brought life to those prayers is now but a handful of souls. The spirit lingers, but the voices are fewer. Still, each visitor who walks its mosaic floor honors what we built together: a partnership between a king who believed in coexistence and a people who believed in faith. The Paradesi Synagogue remains one of my kingdom’s proudest legacies — not because it is grand, but because it endures.

Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum. In sanctum sanctorum Sree Bhagavathi Amman is about 7 feet tall with 4 hands. The upper hands holds shankha and chalra and lower hands are in abhaya varada hastam. Idol of Mahavishnu made out of Saligrama is on the same pedestal along with Bhagavathi Amman and so the Deity is called Ammenarayana, Devinarayana, Lakshminarayana and Bhadrenarayana also. Along with Lakshmi & Narayana there are idols of Brahma, Siva, Ganapati (Ganesh), Subramanya, and Sastha on the same pedestal. In the thiruchuttambalam /outer praharam Kizhukkavu Bhagavathy temple, Sastha, Siva, Ganapati, Nagas and Kshetrapalakas and other Upa-Devas. Keelakarai Bhagavathy/ Keezhkkavu Bhagavathi Amman temple is about 200 meters from the main temple. Ayyappan temple on the way to the Keelakarai Bhagavathy Amman Temple. The main sanctum, housing Shiva in his majestic Gourisankara avatar, faces the Arabian Sea and radiates an otherworldly calm. The adjoining Murugan Kovil, with its vibrant Tamil‑style gopuram, and the Hanuman shrine, built in the Kannadiga Udupi style, add delightful layers to the complex. A Divine Abode in the Heart of Ernakulam – Ernakulathappan Temple Stepping into the sacred premises of the Ernakulam Shiva Temple is like entering a space where time stands still and divinity reigns supreme. Nestled in the heart of the city, this ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva — fondly known as Ernakulathappan — radiates a spiritual energy that calms the mind and uplifts the soul. The moment you lay your eyes on the majestic idol of Lord Shiva, facing west towards the Arabian Sea, you are reminded of the eternal presence of the Supreme — tranquil, all-knowing, and infinitely compassionate. The sanctum exudes a rare serenity, and as the chants of “Om Namah Shivaya” fill the air, you can feel every vibration echoing within your being. But the divine grace of this temple complex doesn’t end there. Within the same sacred campus stands a powerful and awe-inspiring shrine of Lord Hanuman — the embodiment of strength, devotion, and unwavering faith. The majestic idol of Hanumanji here is a beacon of courage and protection. One cannot help but feel empowered and spiritually fortified in his presence. Together, Lord Shiva and Lord Hanuman form a spiritual synergy that fills the heart with devotion and the soul with inspiration. While Shiva teaches the path of inner stillness and surrender, Hanuman inspires us to serve with strength, humility, and fearlessness. This temple complex is not just a place of worship — it is a sanctuary for the weary, a guiding light for the seeker, and a powerful reminder that divine grace is always within reach. One walks out of this space with a lighter heart, a clearer mind, and a deep, unshakable peace. A visit here is not merely a ritual — it is an experience of the eternal.

Divided into five main sections - Altar, Treasure, Procession, Civil Life and Cathedral - the museum exhibits artifacts reflecting the strong Portuguese influence on the art and architecture of the region.
(Visited in August 2025) - The Indo-Portuguese Museum, located within Bishop's House, Fort Kochi marks a key milestone in India - Portugal relations. This is a small museum and the staff is extremely energetic, enthusiastic and welcoming. The museum houses artifacts belonging to Portuguese Churches which were damaged after the Dutch conquest of Portuguese Kerala. It offers a glimpse into the violent colonial past, without sugar coating the brutal religious persecution and notions of white man's burden that are a both a consequence and cause. There is an entry fee of Rs.20 per head (Indian), and kudos to the person at the ticket counter, who was brimming with joy, displaying the items of the museum.

The open parking ground is there outside this museum, free parking is available. Attaching only notes on a few belongings.

A small museum located in the heart of fort kochi. Has a small piece of our history. Well i would be biased as although beautiful, I feel deeply saddened about the portrayal of Indians here but it is what it is as most of our invaders were extremely racist and brutal towards us, our culture and our wealth.

The Indo-Portuguese Museum in Fort Kochi, located within the Bishop’s House compound, offers a calm and culturally rich atmosphere showcasing Kerala’s Portuguese-influenced art, architecture, and religious heritage. It features well-preserved artifacts such as altar pieces, crosses, and vestments, giving visitors a glimpse into the colonial era. Entry is very affordable, around ₹20 for Indians. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 AM to 1 PM and 2 PM to 5 PM, and closed on Mondays and public holidays. It’s about 1 km from the Fort Kochi bus stand and roughly 12 km from Ernakulam railway station, making it easily accessible and worth a short historical visit. All the ancient collection is there.Very small museum but nice.near by locations are hosteller.surrounding place is very nice for walking.one part not like is when we enter there is washroom which is quite disturbing and basement water is there so smell coming that on need to clean and maintain.

First of all its not a tourist destination. Most of the area under the surveillance of Indian Navy. Willingdon island is the biggest man made island in India. Made by the direction of Robert Bristow (British Engineer). This is not a crowded place, this place under the control of Indian Navy. Ernakulam wharf, mattancherry wharf , old harbour railway station, Navel base... Are the major offices located in the island. The neat and broad roads and the clean atmosphere gives a pleasant ambiance. You can reach there by road or by boat.

It features European-style buildings that reflect the influence of colonial powers such as Dutch, Portuguese, and British architecture. A beautiful old world charm, puts you on vacation mode. The street is pedestrian friendly and lined with pretty stores/boutiques and cafes. The buildings are well maintained preserving the old architecture. It’s popular with tourists, and the downside that comes with it… the hustlers… tour guides, rickshawalas following you.

ELODIE P — Google review
One of Fort Kochi’s oldest lanes, Princess Street is a narrow, pedestrian-friendly stretch lined with colonial-era buildings reflecting Dutch, Portuguese, British, and French architectural styles—many are 300–400 years old godowns and bungalows refurbished as galleries, cafés, or stays . The name stems from “Prince’s Street,” an homage to the famed pirate William Kidd, nicknamed “Prince.” Under British rule, locals renamed it Princess Street. It’s also colloquially called Loafer’s Corner, after local stories involving a women’s hostel and onlookers that earned the area its nickname . Architecture & Vibe Golden stucco facades, pastel hues, wooden balconies, and traditional shutters line the street—perfect for photography and ambling at leisure . Shops & Eats Explore antique stores, spice kiosks, boutiques, Ayurvedic shops, bookstores, art galleries, and cozy cafés. Many cafés double as creative hubs, offering handmade treats and local delicacies (). Cultural Pulse Especially vibrant on weekends and evenings, Princess Street hosts pop-up art exhibitions, live performances, and open-air gatherings—adding to its laid-back yet energetic vibe . Address: Fort Kochi, approximately 1 km from the Fort Kochi Boat Jetty and Santa Cruz Basilica • Closest Rail Station: Ernakulam ~13 km away • Nearest Airport: Cochin International Airport ~45 km • Metro Access: Maharaja’s College metro station ~4.5 km away (about 45 min walk or short drive) .

The Indian Naval Maritime Museum, located at INS Dronacharya in Fort Kochi, offers a comprehensive look into the rich naval history of India. Visitors can explore the genesis and evolution of the Indian Navy, dating back to ancient civilizations and trade links with Arabs. The museum showcases artifacts such as warship models, artillery, uniforms, and antique pistols. Special sections are dedicated to post-independence naval victories and strategic maneuvers during conflicts like the Indo-Pak Wars and Kargil War.
Very nicely done up. Real informative. Lot of historical events are captured. It also brings out how important it is to keep our naval base strong as in past we were always invaded easily through sea . People who want to make a career in Navy should visit this place for sure. Also it helps the patriotic self in you.

A very unique and educational museum experience! I loved that the exhibits are housed within the original 1938 British WWII bunkers. The museum clearly charts India's naval saga from ancient maritime trade and Kunjali Marakkar's battles right up to the modern Navy's defense technology and victories. The blend of historical artifacts, ship models, and impressive real-life military hardware (missiles, cannons, helicopter) in the lawns is excellently done. Well-preserved and inspiring—definitely worth the visit when in Fort Kochi.

Fort Kochi Beach, with its blend of history and natural beauty, is a captivating destination. The iconic Chinese fishing nets silhouette against the sunset, creating a postcard-worthy scene. The beach's relaxed atmosphere attracts both locals and tourists, making it a cultural melting pot. Stroll along the shore to discover art installations and vibrant markets. However, swimming isn't recommended due to strong currents. The beach showcases Fort Kochi's rich heritage, evident in nearby landmarks like St. Francis Church. While it may get crowded, especially during festivals, Fort Kochi Beach remains a charming spot, reflecting the spirit of this historic port town. Vasco square is where you get to see clean se water - rest of the fort kochi beach are full of floating algae and plant bodies. You can take a stroll and pictures at Vasco square facing the Arabian sea. You also get to see lots of cargos and ships from here. Cleanliness can be improved, nonetheless it’s a perfect hangout place for sure with a line of cafes close by. Only downside - there is not enough clean space to get into the sea water.

My Experience at David Hall Art Gallery & Café, Fort Kochi I’ve been visiting David Hall quite often over the past few months, and it’s easily one of my favorite places in Fort Kochi. The space is beautiful and peaceful — perfect for relaxing, working, or catching up with friends. What truly sets this place apart is the people. Even though it was raining a bit the seats and gallery were totally covered so it didn't affect the audience. I'd suggest you to come early to get the good seats (middle ones). Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium is a football stadium located in Kochi, Ernakulam. It is the Home ground of Kerala Blasters. The Stadium offers a huge seating capacity of nearly 80,000. The Accessibility of the stadium by the Kochi Metro makes it even more convenient. The metro has a stop in the same name itself as 'JLN Stadium'. The infrastructure is poorly maintained. Seating is average. Toilets are below average. Sufficient Parking space is available for the vehicles. There are also many shops including tea shops to government offices like Norka located in the stadium round itself. Inshort it is a good spot. Even the road that leads to the stadium from the metro station is also excellent with trees shade and natural environment.

Built in the early sixteenth century, Vasco House sports the typical European glass paned windows and balcony cum verandahs characteristic of those times. There is no documentary or other proof that the renowned explorer Vasco da Gama resided there, except from a picture of him that stands out among other wall hangings and photos in the house. It is located behind St. Francis Church at the intersection of Rose and Ridsdale Street, and is one of the most photographed buildings in Fort Kochi. Vasco House has become a popular filming location of Malayalam movies since it appeared in the 2007 Malayalam film Big B, starring Mammootty.[2]

Well, I’ve crossed oceans, dodged Indian customs, and found the Holy Grail of shopping but apparently, the real adventure is finding parking at Lulu Mall. This colossal temple of consumerism rises out of Kochi like a mirage with air conditioning. Inside, it’s less “Mystic India” and more “Midwestern USA,” just with better samosas. Now, here’s the cultural plot twist: outside these marble gates, most folks still dress with the dignified modesty of Hindu tradition: saris, kurtas, the whole beautiful ensemble. But step inside Lulu, and suddenly you’re in a Calvin Klein ad. Every storefront screams Western fashion, Levi’s, Zara, H&M as if the British left and sent their brands to finish the job. Still, as malls go, Lulu is impressive, just not exactly adventurous. You don’t need a map or a whip, just a credit card and stamina. Three stars for scale, cleanliness, and surviving the modern world’s greatest test of courage: weekend shopping.

Vasco da Gama Square, located at Fort Kochi, is a narrow promenade along the beach that offers a glimpse into the city's captivating past. Named after the renowned Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, this spot is home to the iconic Chinese fishing nets on teak and bamboo poles. These nets were brought by traders from Kublai Khan's court and are still used by local fishermen today. The square provides an ideal vantage point to watch them in action.
1. 🌅 Viewpoint: Vasco da Gama Square offers the best, unobstructed view of the long row of Chinese Fishing Nets along the Fort Kochi shoreline. 2.🦞 Seafood Stalls: Enjoy the “You Buy, We Cook” experience — buy fresh catch from fishermen and get it cooked with Kerala spices on the spot. 3. 🎡 Vibe: Always lively with tourists, locals, street vendors, and fishermen — a perfect blend of culture and daily life. 4. 🕒 Timings: Open 24 hours; best time to visit is at sunset for the golden-hour view of the nets. 5. 🏖️ Nearby Attractions: Close to Fort Kochi Beach, St. Francis Church, and colonial-era buildings.

This is a place of entry before getting into a Chinese fishing net. Since we visited a bit early in the morning and during weekends , the place was getting cleaned by the house keep staff, so we couldn't click pictures. Shops are available but were not open during our visit. The fisherman will do a lot of fishing on the sea shore. The mechanism is quite simple yet thoughtful. A few places give a demonstration about how it's done. Unique and good experience. Lots of variety of fishes are available. You can also purchase along the side

Lovely beachside walkway in Fort Kochi to enjoy your morning and evening walks. Stroll leisurely amidst the market and sound of waves to enchanting views of the ocean and the ships that overlook them. One major concern is that all the road side stalls but me on the road and not on the side of the beach. It obstructs not only the view but also the sanity of the coast line gets polluted. The government must move all vendors to the road from the coast. There is ample space available.

Paliam Palace, also known as Paliam Dutch Palace, is a historic Nalukettu located in Chendamangalam, Kochi. It served as the residence of the Paliath Achans, prime ministers to the former Maharajas of Kochi. The palace museum showcases historic records and letters of the Paliam family. Renovated by the Muziris Heritage Foundation, it offers guided tours providing insights into early Kerala history.
**⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Timeless Journey Through History and Architecture** Paliyam Kovilakom, nestled in the serene village of Chendamangalam, is a captivating blend of Kerala’s royal legacy and Dutch colonial influence. This 16th-century palace, once the residence of the Paliath Achans—hereditary prime ministers of the Kingdom of Cochin—offers a profound glimpse into Kerala’s political and cultural past. Stepping into its corridors feels like walking through a living museum, where every artifact and architectural detail whispers stories of diplomacy, power, and resilience . **Highlights of My Visit:** - **Historical Significance:** The Kovilakom was gifted by the Dutch to the Paliath Achan for his role in ousting the Portuguese from Cochin. It later became a strategic hub for governance, where the family advised the Cochin kings and hosted dignitaries. The museum’s exhibits, including ancient manuscripts, weaponry, and royal decrees, vividly narrate this legacy . - **Architectural Marvel:** The fusion of Kerala’s traditional *nalukettu* style with Dutch practicality is striking. Elaborate wooden staircases, thick walls with splayed windows for ventilation, and the *Prasanga Peedam* (speech pedestal) where the Achan addressed the public are standout features. The design ensures natural cooling—a testament to sustainable pre-modern engineering . **Visitor Experience:** - **Guided Tours:** Knowledgeable guides decode the palace’s history, from its role in the Cochin-Dutch alliance to Tipu Sultan’s invasion. Interactive displays and multilingual panels enhance engagement . - **Affordable Entry:** At just ₹55 per person, the museum is a steal. Timings are 10 AM–5 PM (closed Mondays) . - **Peaceful Ambiance:** The lush surroundings and riverside location make it ideal for leisurely exploration. **Tips for Visitors:** - **Combine with Nearby Sites:** Pair your visit with the Chendamangalam Synagogue (2 km away) and Paliam Nalukettu for a full day of historical immersion . - **Photography:** not allowed inside - **Parking:** Use designated areas to avoid congestion, especially on weekends . **Final Thoughts:** Paliyam Kovilakom isn’t just a palace—it’s a portal to Kerala’s golden age of trade, diplomacy, and cultural synthesis. Whether you’re a history buff, architecture enthusiast, or simply seeking tranquility, this gem in the Muziris Heritage Circuit promises an enriching experience. **Rating:** 5/5 — A must-visit for anyone exploring Kerala’s layered past! 🏰🌿 *Pro tip:* Visit during weekdays for a quieter experience and golden-hour lighting perfect for photography.

Paliam Palace in Chendamangalam, Kerala, is a captivating 450-year-old gem blending Dutch and Kerala architectural styles. Once home to the Paliath Achans, prime ministers of Cochin, it’s now a museum showcasing historic artifacts, intricate wooden carvings, and a medicinal wooden bed. The guided tour offers fascinating insights into its rich history, though photography is strictly prohibited. While well-maintained, it lacks grandeur compared to other palaces. A just visit for history and architecture enthusiasts. Entry fee is Rs 55 which includes the visit to Paliyam museum.

Paliam Palace and Kovilakam are a must-see for those who love the beauty of the past. A beautiful structure in the Dutch Kerala style, Kovilakam offers us a glimpse into the lifestyle of the old extended family.

When I walked into Paliam Palace, it felt like stepping into another era. This wasn’t just the home of the Paliath Achans, the hereditary prime ministers of the Kochi Rajas—it was a seat of power, diplomacy, and influence in Kerala’s history. What struck me first was the architecture. The nalukettu design, with its central courtyard, sloping tiled roofs, and beautifully carved woodwork, has a charm that no modern building can match. You can almost picture the Achans walking through those corridors, discussing matters of state with the kings of Kochi. The palace has a unique story even in recent times. It was a private property until 2014, when the Government of Kerala took it over and began preserving it as a heritage museum. Then came the 2018 floods—the palace was submerged in water, and the damage was heartbreaking. Standing there, knowing that the same rooms I was in had once been filled with floodwaters, gave me a strange mix of sadness and respect. Sadness for the loss, but respect for how well the palace has endured and been brought back to life. Interestingly, not all of Paliam’s heritage has turned into a museum. Some other nalukettu houses nearby are still private homes, with families living in them. That contrast made the experience even more real—it’s not just history frozen in glass cases, it’s a legacy that still breathes. The ticket price is just ₹55 per person, and honestly, it feels like a gift. The guides inside are the true highlight. Their storytelling is so vivid that the palace comes alive in front of you. I loved how they explained not only the history of the Achans but also small details about the rooms, the architecture, and even the lifestyle of those times. Without them, it would have been just a building—but with their explanations, it became a journey into the past. As I left, I felt grateful that places like Paliam Palace are being preserved. It’s not just worth visiting—it’s worth remembering. If you have even the slightest interest in Kerala’s history, culture, or architecture, this is one place you should not miss.

I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Paliyam Palace in North Paravoor, and it was a truly enriching experience. If you're someone who enjoys culture, heritage, and architecture, this place is a must-visit gem tucked away in Kerala. The ticket was quite reasonable — just ₹160 for 3 people, which gives access to both the main palace and the nalukettu (traditional quadrangle-style ancestral home). Upon entry, we were shown a short video presentation, which helped us understand the historical importance of the Paliyam family, their connection to the Cochin royal family, and their influential role in Kerala's political and cultural landscape. This context really helped us appreciate everything we saw inside. Photography is not allowed inside the palace, which actually adds to the sanctity and quietness of the environment. The place feels very serene and steeped in history, as if time slows down once you walk through the gates. One fascinating part of the palace is the Sapramanchakattil — a special cot made entirely of medicinal woods, used by the palace members for their health and well-being. It’s a rare and thoughtful aspect of traditional living that shows how wellness was woven into everyday life. The architecture of the palace is truly remarkable – intricately carved wooden ceilings, traditional tiled roofs, and unique design elements that reflect the craftsmanship of a bygone era. We even saw a specially designed toilet structure placed outside the main palace, which was fascinating in terms of ancient hygiene planning. There’s also a photo gallery featuring portraits and historical moments of key Paliyam family members, which gives a face and personality to the names we hear in Kerala’s history. Overall, Paliyam Palace is a quiet yet powerful place to experience Kerala’s aristocratic heritage, and a perfect spot for a half-day cultural trip if you're in or around North Paravoor. I highly recommend it to history buffs, students, and anyone looking to explore Kerala beyond its beaches and backwaters.

I visited here on a week day so it wasn't busy. The palace, now a museum is very well maintained, magnificent. A mix of Dutch and Kerelan architecture within. Some lovely ancient artifacts. They had different guides to explain on every floor and this service was included in the entry fee. I have not had this experience for example even in the Cairo museum in Egypt or the largest Indian museum in Kolkata. That being said, they didn't permit to take any photos for some reason. Outdoor photography was permitted wherein I could take pictures of the ancient toilet and urinal which has been shifted outdoors. A nice experience if in these parts, recommended.

A visit to the Vaikom Mahadeva Temple is both a spiritual and cultural experience. The moment one steps into the temple premises, a deep sense of peace and devotion takes over. The rhythmic chanting of mantras, the fragrance of incense, and the sound of temple bells together create an atmosphere of divine serenity. The temple’s traditional architecture, with its ancient stone pathways and beautifully carved wooden structures, reflects Kerala’s timeless temple artistry. The idol of Lord Vaikathappan radiates a powerful spiritual presence, drawing devotees into quiet contemplation and prayer. Witnessing the rituals, especially during the early morning and evening poojas, is profoundly moving. The sight of oil lamps flickering in the sanctum and the temple pond reflecting the golden glow of twilight add to the sanctity of the experience. The Vaikathashtami festival transforms the entire temple town into a vibrant centre of faith, culture, and community harmony. It is not merely a celebration but a reaffirmation of Kerala’s spiritual legacy and the enduring devotion of its people. A visit to Vaikom Temple leaves one with a lasting impression — of faith beyond boundaries, tradition rooted in compassion, and a sense of inner calm that lingers long after leaving the temple grounds.

The Vaikom Sree Mahadeva Temple is historic Hindu temple and pilgrimage centre of honoring Lord Siva. The main deity of the temple is Lord Siva, fondly called as " Vaikkathappan ". The temple architecture reflects the richest cultural heritage of Kerala. People believed that Lord Parasurama involved the works of the temple and worshipped its rituals. Also belive that the Great Siva Linga is from Treta Yuga. Devotees can get holy ash as a prasadam, and this can cure people from hysteria, poison and wounds. The temple is serene and very divine place, surrounded by lush greenery and backwaters. Also a temple pond on the northern side of the temple. The main festival of the temple is ' Vaikath Astami ' celebrated on November / December ( month of Vrichikam in malayalam calendar ). Thousands of devotees participated the festival and obtained deities grand blessings every year.

The Vaikom Mahadeva Temple, one of the 108 sacred Shiva temples, holds a rich historical and spiritual legacy that dates back to the Treta Yuga. Revered as the Southern Kashi, the temple is referred to in the Bhargava Purana and Sanalkumarasamhita as Vaiyaghrageham and Vaiyaghrapuram. Ancient texts like the Skanda Purana, Padma Purana, Vedasarasarasivasahasranama, and others affirm Vaikom’s divine prominence, placing it alongside the great Vedic centers of spiritual wisdom. Unlike other temples, Lord Vaikkathappan blesses devotees in three distinct divine forms: At dawn – As Dakshinamurthy, the supreme teacher who dispels ignorance. At noon – As Kiratamurthy, the fierce warrior who bestowed the Pashupatastra upon Arjuna. At dusk – As Sambasiva, the compassionate divine family man, Vadakkupurathu Pattu is a 12-day Kalamezhuthu Pattu (ritualistic art and song) performed once every 12 years to appease Goddess Bhadrakali. This sacred event, conducted on the Karthika day of the Malayalam month of Meenam, takes place in the northern courtyard of the Vaikom Mahadeva Temple, accompanied by special rituals and Guruthi offerings.

A nice museum on Kerala history located in the heart of Ernakulam city. Must take kids and students to give them an overview of the important eras, rulers and cultural influences in Kerala's past. The museum includes three sections, of which the first is a doll's museum which showcases the different dressing styles of Indian according to regional variations. Then there is an art gallery which include some rare paintings including a few by M.F. Hussain , Abanindranath Tagore, Jamini Roy and a painting by Ravi Varma. The third section has a Diorama show which is the peculiarity of the museum where statues depicting historical figures and incidents from the past are used to narrate historical events. Moreover, the museum organises summer camps for kids, occasional acadmic lectures for the public, some performances and so on.

The Museum of Kerala History The Museum of Kerala History, located along the National Highway between Aluva and Kochi, about 10 km from Ernakulam, is one of the most fascinating cultural landmarks in Kerala. Started Madhavan Nair himself now it is manage by the Madhavan Nair Foundation. The museum offers visitors an opportunity to travel through the state’s long and vibrant past in an engaging and memorable way. The highlight of the museum is its unique sound-and-light show, which compresses more than two thousand years of Kerala’s history into about 35 carefully crafted scenes. The show features around 90 life-size statues, each created with reinforced concrete and artistically painted to bring characters and eras to life. What makes it particularly striking is the attention to detail: the attire, arms, ornaments, and jewelry are all true to the period they represent, making the exhibits feel authentic and immersive. The narrative starts with prehistoric times, before moving into the early centuries around 100 AD and continuing through significant phases of Kerala’s political, social, and cultural evolution. The story concludes in 1966, providing visitors with a sweeping overview of Kerala’s history. What I liked most remarkable was how successfully the museum has compressed such a vast history while still managing to preserve the essence of Kerala’s culture and identity. The experience is both educational and inspiring, making it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the state’s heritage.

It was a superb experience to visit the Kerala museum. The museum consist of three different types of exhibits and one among them with music and information about the exhibits. The explanation is given in English and is particularly best for Social Science students and those who are interested in Kerala history.
Dhanya D — Google review
It was a quite well maintained place,I love the history structured by a story telling method with dolls which was dressed up accordingly. Love the experience. Couldn't take pictures of the inside as it was prohibited. I would suggest experiencing it.
Joy B — Google review
I visited this museum expecting to learn about history and culture, but the experience was extremely disappointing. The entry fee itself is quite high — ₹200 per person — and on top of that, they even charge an additional ₹100 just to take photos, which feels completely unreasonable. What made things worse was the staff’s rude and unhelpful behavior. When I politely asked the lady at the counter to explain things in Hindi, as my parents do not understand English, she refused bluntly and spoke to us in a very disrespectful manner. It was embarrassing and upsetting, especially for a place that should be welcoming to all visitors. Specialy because of that lady I would give minus rating to this place. Not worth visiting this place. Overall, the museum is not worth the money. Poor service, no courtesy, and unnecessary charges for everything — even for photos. There are much better and more respectful places to visit in Kochi. I would not recommend this museum to anyone looking for a pleasant or educational experience.

The Dharmanath Jain Temple is located the hearts of Fort Kochi in Mattanchery, Kerala India, built in 1960. It's dedicated to the 15 th Trithankara of the Jainism. The main deity of the temple is Lord Dharmanath Chandraprabha. The temple is very beautiful built in the tradition of Jain style, with idols sculptured pillars, artwork and tiled with white marbles. A well written instruction board was showcased in the front of the temple. A very calm and peaceful atmosphere...... public can enter the temple on 11 am to 12.30 pm only. The best time to visit the temple is on noon, when the priest feed the pigeons. It is worth to seeing and you can also make donations to the feedings and feed them in your own hands. One of the most festival is Paryushan Parava which means festival of forgiveness.

Nice temple.pigeon feeding at 12.15 pm everyday is must watch .
Anoop P — Google review
It's a temple with the unique experience of feeding the pigeons. At 12.15 pm sharp everyday a lot of them reach the temple. On a que they start circling the temple 'pradakshina' and after the priest's call they come to the feeding area. They may feed off of visitor's hands as well. A few things to know about visiting the jain temple - Avoid carrying food items inside the temple premises, Jains donot enter the main temple during their menstrual cycle, Carry a cover / dupatta if possible, if not they provide you with the same, Certain areas of the temple are restricted for visitors, so read the instructions displayed at check point.

This place was really peaceful. It's located around gujarati people wherein there are multiple other Hindu temples. It was really nice, but i went in the afternoon hours wherein it's closed and opens in the evening so visitors can go worship during those hours

The temple is nice and especially the architecture. But the temple authorities and the committee are full of arrogant people. They are not polite. I was entering through one gate and going out through the next gate. Had my shoes removed and carried in my hand. Some arrogant temple staff got very angry and argued with me. This is not good.

Temple dedicated to Vaman Moorthy. A devine place and lot of peace you can feel when you are in the temple. Shiva temple is also there in the same compound. This is one of the best rare finds in Kochi. Not listed anywhere and highly under rated, we found it by accident while we are going to someplace else. We've had a serene and intimate experience. Most holy places and they do not take spiritual for granted. They provide stoles for women. It's very quiet and if you are looking to pray, this is the best one.

The church holds immense historical significance—site of the 1653 Coonan Cross Oath. Inside, you feel the weight of centuries of faith and struggle. Renovated beautifully using Nubian architecture, it’s both an architectural and spiritual marvel

A Place of Deep Peace and Divine Presence This church is truly a sanctuary of peace and spiritual strength. From the moment you step in, you can feel the divine presence. The ambience is serene and sacred — a perfect place to connect with God and reflect in silence. The architecture, the prayerful atmosphere, and the warmth of the people create a space filled with grace and reverence. Whether you come here regularly or just for a visit, it leaves a lasting impression on your soul. The spiritual guidance provided by the clergy is thoughtful and deeply rooted in faith. Each service is uplifting, and the entire place feels like it’s wrapped in the arms of divinity. Highly recommend visiting if you're looking for a powerful spiritual experience. 🙏
Bibin P — Google review
This church is situated at the place where one of the earliest and biggest schisms of Malankara Nazranis happened. The people split into Puthenkootukar and Pazhayakootukar after the event. The event is also considered as the first independence movement by some, as the event marks the Puthenkootukar dissasociating themselves from the schackles of the foreign over-bearing Roman Catholic church (see of the Pope of Vatican) and returned to the old marthoman lineage. Thus it is a site of historic relevance. The current structure of the church is the renovated form with a modern architecture. It is claimed that the walls of the old church is kept still intact inside the church, and the exterior is made of mud. The design and the ambience created by the stained glass windows are worth a visit. A replica of the original coonan cross is kept inside the portico of the church where it is believe to be the place where the event happened. The church also houses the relics of various saints. Overall it is a nice place to visit both historically and architecturally.

Aspinwall House, originally the headquarters of Aspinwall & Company Ltd., is now a cultural hub in Fort Kochi. Named after English trader John H. Aspinwall, it overlooks the backwaters and hosts art exhibitions, including those for the Kochi-Muziris Biennale. The building's Victorian architecture adds to its charm, and visitors can explore contemporary art and crafts exhibitions at The David Hall Museum and Aspinwall House itself.
A graceful building with wooden worked floors. Well setup and maintained. Do not forget to walk around to the shores where you can watch small ships sail through the backyard. It's a gift of God that anybody can enjoy the backwaters. Biennale is very famous world class cultural fest that happens in Kochi every 2 years. People who love art and other cultural activities cannot find another better place than this.

Visited during the Kochi bienale.. Great venue besides the backwater. Great art works all over the place during the program. Good canteen. Enjoy tea and snacks with the great view of ships and boats passing by. Must visit place. Be advised though ferry service are less during Sundays so need to be prepared to wait for like 45 minutes average to get into ferry. Otherwise you can go around by road but will take like 45 minutes (20km) extra so it's your choice.

I recently visited The Aspinwall House and I must say, it is a fantastic venue. The presentations were great and the place was well-maintained. The ambience was amazing and the best thing about this venue is the scenic views. The polite service provided by the staff made the experience even more enjoyable. The facilities provided were also good. However, during the Biennale weekends, it can get a bit crowded, but that's understandable given the popularity of the event. Overall, I highly recommend The Aspinwall House as a must-visit venue for anyone looking for a great experience in Kochi.
Niranjan R — Google review
My first Biennale and it was beyond all my expectations. Aspinwall House is the central piece of the event and I spent over 9 hrs across two days to cherish the exhibition. I spent several minutes just photographing the space. I love these old world charms and especially when they manage to restore, sustain, and decently maintain. I wonder what stories the walls have heard over the decades. It's an ideal place for the Biennale. Highly recommending every single person interested in art of any sorts to visit.

Built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, this ancient military stronghold offers stunning views of the surrounding waters. The fort's remnants provide an intriguing glimpse into history and are particularly valuable for students of archaeology and heritage enthusiasts.
Only remnants of the fort can be seen here. Operating under Muziris a heritage project from Government of Kerala they have maintained this site neat and clean. Full of greenery. Visited Kottappuram Fort (Kotta) recently on an all-ladies office trip, and it was a refreshing experience! The fort is just 2–3 km from Kottappuram Junction, so it’s much more convenient if you go by your own vehicle, though you can hire an auto if needed. Entry tickets were just ₹10 per person—totally worth it. The place felt very safe and peaceful, perfect for a relaxed outing. The highlight was definitely the stunning river view—it’s calming and scenic, a great spot to unwind and click pictures. Historically, Kottappuram Fort (also known as Cranganore Fort) was built by the Portuguese in 1523 and later captured and modified by the Dutch. It played a major role in controlling access to the Periyar River and was once part of the old Muziris port region—one of the oldest trade centers in India. A great blend of history and nature—highly recommend for a short, serene getaway!

Art really lies in the eyes of the beholder, and this particular exhibition didn't really impress me. It was all by one local artist with a peculiar scriggle-style. Edapally Church is a beautiful and peaceful place with a lot of history behind it. It’s one of the oldest churches in Kerala, originally built in the 6th century, and over the years it has grown into a stunning landmark. The blend of the old church and the newer, grand structure looks amazing you can really feel the mix of tradition and modern design. The atmosphere here is calm and welcoming.

A beautiful and peaceful divine Church in the middle of the busy edappally town. A calm area with two churches, one old and one new, the second one is very big church in the name of St. George Here a huge area of parking is available. The new church's is famous for its gold coated Altar.

Most incredible church I've ever seen!!! Massive complex with a chapel, a cemetery and the main cathedral. This church redefines grandeur! The shimmering golden ornaments to the beautifully lit shrines, the church(es) are decked from head to toe in intricate carvings. I especially liked the ancient domed roof of the cathedral entrance with stone 3d carvings from the bible and the carved scenes from Jesus's life inside the church. I love how reverent the people were inside the church, silent only whispering prayers. You should also take a look at the cemetery, very heart-touching writings on the tombstones. Highlight of our trip, totally worth visiting.

Nestled in the heart of Kadavanthra, Pandhal Cafe & Deli is a charming eatery that beautifully marries art and cuisine. Housed in a restored 17th-century Dutch bungalow, this cafe offers an inviting atmosphere with warm lighting and rustic wooden accents reminiscent of traditional Italian cafes. The menu boasts an array of authentic Italian dishes such as Neapolitan Pizza, Genovese Risotto, and unique salads like Foxtail and Balsamic Vegetable Salad.
Absolutely loved the experience at Pandhal Deli & Café! The ambiance is cozy and inviting, perfect for a relaxed outing. The food was exceptional — fresh, flavourful, and beautifully presented. Their desserts and coffee are a must-try! Service was prompt and courteous, adding to the overall charm. Highly recommended for anyone looking for quality food and a great vibe in the city.

I’ve always relied on Pandhal Cake Shop in Kochi for urgent orders and their premium cakes, pastries, and savories. However, my recent experience was disappointing. I ordered a fresh butterscotch cake for a birthday celebration. While the service in store from the warm welcome to the smooth bill payment was commendable, the issues began once I unpacked the cake. The bamboo knife and candle were packed together, which not only pressed the candle but also left it covered in wax. I reported this issue immediately via their number listed in there google business profile, but I haven’t received any response so far. Furthermore, if the contact number is not in use or fails to respond to customer queries, it should be removed from their Google Business Profile. This is far from the “enjoyable experience” they promise on their website. I hope they address these concerns promptly so that future customers don’t face a similar disappointment.

Absolutely incredible food. Although the items are priced higher than most, the quality and taste of what you get is worth it. We enjoyed everything we got - the bagelwiches and Lebanese mezze are must-haves. Their korean rice bowls are also quite fulfilling. I'd also like to point out their friendly and prompt service. Our waitress actually ended up missing one of our orders while the rest had all arrived. The team handled it really well, acknowledging it immediately instead of making excuses, and also served us a complimentary milk cake to make up for the extra wait! We really appreciated it and would like to point it out as an example of good service. Really would recommend this place to anyone.

The history of the Pallipuram Fort can be traced back to 1503, when the Portuguese erected it on Vypeen Island in Kochi. The fort is significant for its historical and architectural significance, as well as its contribution to Indian history. It is one of the 46 places in Kerala that are listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Pallipuram Fort is a hexagonal structure built from red sandstone blocks and measures 18 metres by 12 metres.
Visited on a Saturday. The gate was locked so couldn't get inside. It's walkable distance from the main road. The road leading to the fort is very small and will be difficult for vehicles to pass through. Small hexagonal fort built by Portuguese in Vypin. As mentioned it was built for surveillance purpose. See the attached frames.
Kris S — Google review
If you are a history enthusiast, Pallipuram Fort, locally known as "Ayikkotta" or "Alikotta," is a hidden gem that you shouldn't miss while in the Kochi area. It holds the distinction of being the oldest existing European fort in India, built by the Portuguese in 1503 to guard their trade routes. Its strategic location at the northern end of Vypin Island, where the Periyar River meets the Arabian Sea, makes for a scenic backdrop. The architecture is quite unique—a sturdy, three-storey high hexagonal structure made of laterite, chunam, and wood. The thick walls and cannon embrasures offer a real sense of its past military importance. Visitors can also see the opening to the underground cellar, once used for storing gunpowder and rumored to be a secret tunnel leading to the Cheraman Masjid in Kodungallur. The fort is now a protected monument under the Department of Archaeology and is generally well-maintained, though some external walls are a bit overgrown with vegetation. There is no entry fee, which is a big plus. One minor drawback is that the access road is quite narrow, so it's best to park your vehicle on the main road and walk the short distance. Also, information boards on site could be more detailed, but a quick search beforehand will enhance your visit. It is a peaceful and serene place, offering a quiet escape and great photo opportunities, especially near the adjacent Manjumatha Church and the riverside. Overall, it's a fascinating historical site worth an hour or two of your time to soak in the rich history and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. Open from 9:30 AM to 5 PM (closed on Mondays).

Very silent place. The most ancient building in India. Not a good option on a very hot sunny day. Still, it is a calm and mindful place. There is an underground passage inside the fort which connected it with other forts in the past but closed right now. It is a good place to visit for those who are interested in historical sites.

An old Portuguese fort remains…… a fort built in 1503, now under archaeological protection. It is one of the most ancient buildings of the time of Portuguese times. It was preserved by the government of Travancore , now under the government of Kerala, in 1902. Here now there is no entry fee. We can visit here in the working hours 9am to 5pm with family. There is nothing more to see here other than this structure. A not maintained good pond is also in the compound. The structure is situated in the bank of the lake. Now this project is not under Muziris

Built in 1503 by the Portuguese sailors, this is the oldest existing European fort in India. It's located at Pallippuram, the northern most end of Vypin Island near Ernakulam in Kerala, The Dutch captured the fort in 1663 and sold it to the Kingdom of Travancore in 1789.Now maintained by the Archeology Department, Government of Kerala, it's open to public. There is no entry fee. Hexagonal in shape, ther is an underground cellar that was used to store gunpowder and a well which was the source of fresh water. There is an opening to the north which leads to the cellar. There is a circular slab stone, on which was installed a pillar on which the radiating wooden struts supporting the upper two floors must have rested.

A hexagonal fortification built by Portuguese as their costal battery to keep their cannons. Cellular barracks of gunners also were there, but has lost in the wake of time. Our Lady of Hope Church, located on Vypin island, is a nearly 400-year-old Roman Catholic church with a rich history. Initially built by the Portuguese, it was later destroyed and reconstructed by the Dutch. The church's beautiful white exterior and brown doors add to the old-world charm of Vypin's scenic landscape.
A beautiful place of worship. The architecture and decor takes you back in time to the early 1600's.
Sigmund P — Google review
Church of Our Lady of Hope, located on Vypin Island near Kochi, is one of the oldest and most historically significant churches in the region. Built by the Portuguese in 1605, it is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Esperança (Our Lady of Hope), a revered figure among the seafaring community. The church was established primarily to serve the Portuguese settlers and the local fishing community. The architecture reflects typical Portuguese colonial style, with later additions and modifications by subsequent colonial powers. Despite these changes, it retains its old-world charm, featuring a simple yet elegant façade, a gabled roof, and an altar that exudes quiet grace. The church houses several statues and religious artefacts brought by the Portuguese, making it not only a place of worship but also a symbol of Kochi’s deep-rooted colonial past. The Church of Our Lady of Hope remains an active parish and plays a central role in the spiritual life of the local Latin Catholic community. It is also an important stop for those exploring Kochi’s rich religious and cultural heritage, standing as a quiet witness to centuries of maritime history, faith, and resilience.

Visited the church when I was exploring Muziris, an old port town of Kerala near Kochi. Standing tall on Vypeen island, the church is considered protector of the inhabitants on the island and fishermen. It’s white facade, as white as snow and peaceful interiors, almost empty prayer hall with serene altar attracted me the most.

It is a small museum. Not that much visitors were there when I last visited. This museum will give an idea how cochin port builded and its formative years through photographs. The miniature of port and equipments used usually in a port and other machinery for Port construction is also exhibited here. The primitive equipments used by Portmen and Fishernen can also be seen here. The thing to note is that Photography is strictly prohibited here. The Watchmen comes and tells occasionally 'do not take photo here'. However after interaction with him we felt that he was a Knowledgable person about Kochin Port's history. As people rarely come for a visit, we will get a kind of freedom that lacks in usual museums.
