Nestled at an impressive altitude of 1,691 meters above sea level, Medeu is renowned as the highest ice rink in the world. This year-round sports complex is a haven for skating enthusiasts and hockey players alike. Accessible via bus number 12 from Hotel Kazakhstan, it offers a scenic journey that takes about 30 minutes.
Medeu is a must-visit spot in Almaty, especially during winter. Set in a beautiful mountain valley, it’s one of the highest ice rinks in the world. The scenery is stunning, with snow-covered peaks all around. Whether you’re skating or just enjoying the fresh air and mountain views, it’s a refreshing experience. Great for families, friends, or couples. Don’t miss trying the cable car up to Shymbulak from here!
Simi D — Google review
Imagine blue and green mountains, their sharp peaks topped with snowy white hats, just a 20-minute drive from the city. This unique and stunning destination offers a variety of activities for the whole family: skiing, ice skating, hiking through different trails, or climbing the famous health stairs. The mountain area is divided into several levels: First Level - Medeu: known for its legendary high-altitude ice skating rink. Second Level - Shymbulak: A picturesque ski resort that itself is split into two main sections: Combi 1 and Combi 2. The latter one is the highest point accessible by cable car, where the sky seems to touch the land. The panoramic views from here are truly unforgettable. Even in summer, snow still lingers on the pointy peaks, creating a striking contrast against the green slopes below. Whether you're seeking outdoor thrills or simply a peaceful mountain escape, this place has something for everyone.

Absolutely stunning views! Walked up the stairs (854 steps, elevation gain 210 m). It was hard work but worth it.
Magnus A — Google review
Medeu, located just a short drive from Almaty, Kazakhstan, is an iconic destination renowned for its high-altitude ice-skating rink. Surrounded by the stunning Tian Shan mountains, Medeu offers visitors a unique and breathtaking experience. The rink's vast size and pristine ice quality make it a favourite for both professional athletes and recreational skaters.
Nasser A — Google review
One of the best spots in Almaty where you escape hot summer. And in the winter the place turns into ski season. Taking the ropeway to the top you will find some good restaurants and cafés.
Habib — Google review
Visiting the Medeu Ice Skating Rink during winter was an unforgettable experience. Nestled in the mountains just above Almaty, this open-air rink sits at an altitude of 1,691 meters, making it the highest skating rink in the world . The crisp mountain air and stunning views of the snow-covered Zailiysky Alatau range create a magical atmosphere that's perfect for skating enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The rink itself is expansive, covering 10,500 square meters, and is renowned for its high-quality ice, maintained using pure mountain water . Skating here felt smooth and exhilarating, and it's no wonder that over 200 world records have been set at this very location . Facilities are top-notch, with convenient skate rentals, cozy cafes offering warm beverages, and even evening skating sessions accompanied by music and lights . The festive decorations during the holiday season added an extra layer of charm to the experience. Getting to Medeu was straightforward, with regular bus services from Almaty and the option to take a cable car up to the nearby Shymbulak Ski Resort . The entire trip was seamless and well worth it. Tips for Future Visitors: Dress Warmly: Temperatures can be quite cold, so layering is essential. Visit on Weekdays: To avoid crowds, consider going during the week. Explore Beyond Skating: Take time to enjoy the surrounding mountain scenery and perhaps venture up to Shymbulak for more winter activities. In summary, Medeu offers a unique and enchanting skating experience that combines sport, nature, and culture. It's a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Almaty during the winter months.

Farmers Markets
The Green Bazaar in Almaty is a bustling indoor market filled with stalls offering a wide variety of goods. Visitors can explore an abundance of fruits, berries, exotic delicacies, sweets, cheeses, meat products, and rare spices. The friendly sellers are eager to offer samples of national delicacies for visitors to try before making a purchase. Additionally, the market features small dining places serving traditional dishes like lagman and plov.
Green Bazaar is not just about a bazaar selling butchery, it has other stalls selling household products. Of course, butchery section is the most interesting. Selling from horse meat, beef, lamp, pork and chicken. The stall holders are very friendly. You can also find Korean food stuff here. There are also money changers with good exchange rates outside.
Lee K — Google review
A hyperactive market bursting with local sights, sounds and smells. Very close to my hotel, the bazar literally offers everything under one roof. From souvenirs, dry fruits, fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, baked goods, clothes, toys and so much more. They have a money exchange there too. Prices are reasonable and fresh produce is of top quality. They even have a salon, prayer room and several cafes. Quality of fruits I bought was excellent. Don't miss it!
Pankaj — Google review
Green Bazaar (Zelyony Bazaar), Almaty 🇰🇿 If you want to experience the real heart of Almaty, Green Bazaar is the place to go! It’s a vibrant, colorful market packed with energy, aromas, and friendly local vendors. You’ll find a huge variety of stalls — from fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts, and dried fruits to meat, fish, and dairy counters offering local delicacies like horse sausage (kazy), smoked meats, and homemade cheeses. There’s also a big section for spices, honey, chocolates, and herbal teas, all beautifully displayed and perfect for gifts or souvenirs. Upstairs and around the sides, there are stalls selling traditional Kazakh clothing, hats, carpets, handicrafts, and souvenirs, giving you a glimpse of local culture and craftsmanship. Prices are fair, and many vendors offer samples — especially for dried fruits and nuts. Travel Tips: Bring cash (Kazakh tenge), as not every stall takes credit cards. Go in the morning for the freshest produce and fewer crowds. Bargaining politely can help you get better deals. Don’t miss the small eateries around the market serving local snacks and shashlik grills. Overall, Green Bazaar is more than just a market — it’s a cultural experience full of flavors, colors, and local warmth. Highly recommended for families, foodies, and anyone who loves exploring local life.
Semeer K — Google review
Green Bazaar is one of the best places in Almaty for tourists to shop for a wide variety of items such as dry fruits, fresh fruits, vegetables, honey, clothes, and many more local products. It is conveniently located in the center of the city, making it easy to visit. The market is beautifully maintained and well-organized, offering a clean and vibrant shopping experience. One of the advantages of shopping here is that you can bargain with the vendors and purchase items according to your budget. Green Bazaar also has a dedicated meat section where you can buy different types of meat, including goat, horse, cow, lamb, chicken, and even pork. Overall, it’s a great place to enjoy local culture, taste fresh products, and shop for authentic Kazakh goods.
Kaif K — Google review
Great place. Clean. Lots of interesting food, don’t be afraid to ask for a sample. And prices are fair if you choose to buy. I bought few varieties of delicious horse meat sausage, some horse milk smoked cheese, etc. There is also other areas and levels with fresh fruit, dried fruit, Korean food, local souvenirs, clothing etc.
James W — Google review
An expansive, multi-floor bazaar which sells basically everything from meat and vegetables to clothing and jewelry. It’s a fun place just to walk through and explore.
Matt B — Google review
Green Bazaar is a vibrant, authentic slice of Almaty life that’s surprisingly clean and well-maintained. Even if you’re not typically a market person, this is absolutely worth visiting. The bazaar beautifully captures Kazakhstan’s diverse food culture and ethnic groups, offering a genuine look at local life. It’s colorful, lively, and provides real insight into the daily rhythms and culinary traditions of the city.

Lots of stuff sold here. Meat section was amazing. Felt and looked clean. Huge bazaar that takes time to walk around. Easy to get turned around due to many aisles and doors that lead to different sections.

The Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Almaty is a must-visit for those eager to delve into the history and culture of Kazakhstan. Established in 1931, this expansive museum boasts a diverse collection of artifacts and archaeological findings that offer insight into the unique identity of the Kazakh people.
Central State Museum of Kazakhstan is housed in a fine building with beautiful traditional exterior architecture in blue and white. The signboard is in Russian stating Museum opening time but it differs from the website, its not an issue to us as we were there to visit around 2pm. Entry fee is 500 tenge per person. There are 3 levels of museum exhibits, on ground floor from prehistoric era to middle ages pertaining to the history of Kazakhstan. Every exhibits has English label which is absolutely great for our understanding.!!! There’s many local costumes and carpets on show, plus musical instruments and the importance of agriculture to the country. On the second floor is the modern era. An entire room is dedicated to nationalities with their traditional costumes who inhabit Kazakhstan. A key exhibit is the exact miniature copy of the military uniform of the "golden man" made from over 4000 golden parts. We spent about an hour & half. Wish we could stay longer. Quite educative as well as informative. However, I suggest that there should have been a brochure in english for visitors like us. Nevertheless it is worth the visit !!
Susan C — Google review
This museum has its strengths and areas for improvement. The stuffed animal section is visually impressive, and I enjoyed the current affairs and information on the top floor. However, the lack of English translations, especially beyond the top floor and in the art section, is a major drawback—making it hard to understand the exhibits. Entry is incredibly cheap, and there’s a paid section too.
Mohamed A — Google review
It was interesting to visit this museum. All collections were engaging. The museum interior space is beautiful 😍. Its not too large, so you can proceed everything 1 hour. It is kid friendly.
Anastasia G — Google review
The Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan offers a wealth of information for history enthusiasts, particularly those with existing background knowledge in the subject. The museum is undeniably knowledgeable, covering extensive aspects of Kazakhstan’s rich heritage. However, the presentation could benefit from modernization. The exhibits rely heavily on hard facts and detailed information without much effort to make them accessible to general visitors. More interpretive displays, storytelling elements, or interactive features would help transform raw data into engaging narratives that casual visitors can easily absorb and appreciate.
Sansiri K — Google review
Beautiful and well-maintained museum that showcases Kazakhstan’s rich history, from ancient archaeology to modern times. It also houses a stunning Gold Jewellery Museum within the same premises — definitely worth a visit. ✅ Tips for visitors: • The museum is closed on Tuesdays — plan accordingly. • You’ll need about 1–2 hours to explore comfortably. • Ticket price: 5,000 ₸ per adult. • The Archaeology Museum is part of the same complex. • Ask for an English-speaking guide — without one, it’s hard to understand the exhibits, and a self-tour (“DIY”) isn’t very rewarding. Overall, a must-visit spot in Almaty for those who enjoy history and culture, but go with a guide to make it truly worthwhile
Varman O — Google review
Quite complex museum, because of its history! Hopefully they will provide English translations on the few signs available only in Kazakh and Russian, but its the minority. I spent 2hrs30 or so; sometimes the narrative seems quite difficult to follow, particularly with the nomadic cultures. Absolutley recommended! Also keep an eye on events; I had the change to attend a reading memorial, which I enjoyed even if I couldn't understand the language. Take your time to enjoyed the gold exhibition!
Julian G — Google review
A three-level museum, with the most interesting sections covering animal history, including dinosaurs. It would have been even better if guides or an audio tour were available throughout. Some exhibits had audio guides via an app, but not all.
Vedant N — Google review
A great museum experience – everything is clear and well presented. The vast granite halls create an open, airy feeling, making it easy to breathe and move around. The exhibition beautifully tells the story of Kazakhstan.

Almaty Central Mosque is a stunning example of Islamic architecture, featuring white marble walls, gilded golden domes, and intricate ceramic calligraphy. The mosque's towering minaret offers a commanding presence in the city skyline. It took six years to build and has since been recognized as an architectural monument. The rectangular shape of the mosque follows Timurid architectural traditions and can accommodate around 7,000 people.
It’s a short and walkable distance from the Green Bazaar to this mosque. The golden dome is truly magnificent, and the entire place is beautiful and peaceful. There’s barely any English signage inside the halls, but it’s still worth the visit. A small park-like area nearby is perfect for relaxing and soaking in the surroundings. It was lightly raining during our visit, which added to the charm. Entry is free.
Mohamed A — Google review
A beautiful mosque in the middle of the city. The golden tops are particularly attractive and can be seen from quite the distance, it was even visible from our apartment. The surroundings are very clean and well maintained with tulips blooming here and there.
Manish G — Google review
Beautiful mosque in the center of Almaaty city. It is absolutely gorgeous outside. If you have a chance check out the main interior ( sadly only available for men). The interior space dedicated for women was honestly rather sad looking. Free toilets and washing facilities available outside.
Anastasia G — Google review
I did not get a chance to go there. It is not as much as the touristy websites tell you. If you seen other mosques in Middle East or Central Asian Republics, then you won't miss anything at least from the outside.
Arun N — Google review
Magnificent New central mosque for a new country, waktu prayers quite full. May Allah accept, open our hearts and lead us to the right path.
Ashraff A — Google review
Central Mosque is located in the central part of the city, just a block from the Green Bazaar towards Sayakhat bus station (to the north). The building has beautiful, tall minarets with golden domes. It has the big inner yard that also contains a small park as well as some other buildings, such as for the mosque administration and charity. Tourists are welcome to come in to see the interior of prayers rooms. It is open most of the time during the day, and most likely has lots of visitors gathering on Fridays, so it's better be visited all other days during the daytime hours. If you are in the Green Bazaar, walk down the Pushkin street till Mametova street to reach it, it is a few minutes walk.

Park
The Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen, situated in the heart of Almaty, is a 44-acre urban park that pays tribute to the heroic Panfilov soldiers who fought during WWII. The park features striking war memorials and an 'eternal flame' honoring their sacrifice. Adjacent to the park stands the visually captivating Ascension Cathedral, a Tsarist-era wooden structure claimed to be one of the tallest in the world.
The park is buzzing with people and I visited this place with my family. My four-year-old had a blast with her bubble gun, fishing activity and visiting the ascension church. The experience was surreal. Also, it is good to meet local children trying to converse in English. Plenty of pigeon-feeding activities and kids keep your little ones engaged. I highly recommend this place for the kids.
Varun C — Google review
For beginners, this park house the Ascension Cathedral, museum of instruments, war memorial. One walk around the park and you will cover most of the attractions. Pleasant walking track, small shops, kid friendly stroll and further walk leads to the central park. Put your best walking shoes.

28 Panfilov Guardsmen Park, Almaty 🇰🇿 A beautiful and peaceful green space in the heart of Almaty perfect for a relaxing family stroll or a quiet afternoon to feel the nature. The 28 Panfilov Guardsmen Park is not just a park, but an important historical landmark dedicated to the 28 soldiers who bravely defended Moscow during World War II. The centerpiece of the park is the impressive Eternal Flame and the War Memorial, surrounded by beautiful flower gardens and tall trees that provide shade throughout the area. The Ascension Cathedral, with its stunning wooden architecture and colorful domes, adds to the charm and makes it a must-see for visitors. There are walking paths, benches, and open areas where families relax, kids play, and tourists take photos with pigeons. The atmosphere is calm and respectful, with soft background music and a sense of history everywhere. Travel Tips: Visit in the morning or evening for the best light and fewer crowds. Combine your visit with a stop at the nearby Green Bazaar or Arbat Street. Great place for families, photographers, and history lovers. A perfect mix of history, culture, and nature, one of Almaty’s most memorable spots.

Big beautiful park in the centre of Almaty. Good for walking and relaxing. It includes Ascension Cathedral, war museum, and a lot of monuments. Some ice cream vendors and playing area for children.
Habib — Google review
Nice park. Better maintained than the First President Park. The monuments were classic. Reminds one of the two world wars. The ice creams sold are very bad. The cotton candy was okay.
Arun N — Google review
The park is the most fantastic in early summer morning. It’s a historical place. There is a famous Cathedral that stood the devastating earthquake of 1911.

The “Kazakhstan - Motherland” monument in Almaty’s Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen honors soldiers who died in World War II. The statue of a soldier and a grieving mother is powerful and moving. The park’s greenery and the nearby Zenkov Cathedral make it a peaceful visit, especially at night with the nice lighting. Great spot for history lovers.

I absolutely loved the Ascension Cathedral in Almaty such a beautiful building the colorful wooden architecture , especially the greenery of Panfilov Park. Stepping inside felt calm and peaceful, It’s amazing to think the whole structure is made of wood and has survived for over a century. Definitely one of my favorite spots in the city perfect for a quiet moment or just to admire the craftsmanship.

I visited Zenkov Cathedral (Ascension Cathedral) in Almaty during summer with my family. The frescoes inside are beautiful, and the interiors shine with golden tones—candle stands, shrines, and details all appear gold-plated. There are no guides or information boards inside, so it’s better to prepare yourself beforehand to fully appreciate its history and meaning. You would never feel that no nails were used in its construction—the wooden walls look like a normal solid building. From the outside, the colorful exterior is stunning and beautifully restored, making it one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Inside, the peaceful atmosphere, icons, and artwork reflect the rich spiritual heritage of the region. Located within Panfilov Park, the setting is perfect for a relaxing walk after your visit. An absolute must-see in Almaty and truly one of the city’s highlights – highly recommended!

The Ascension Cathedral, also known as the Zenkov Cathedral, is a must-visit landmark in Almaty, Kazakhstan, offering a unique blend of architectural wonder and a charming local experience. Ascension Cathedral, Almaty 🇰🇿✨ Such a beautiful and peaceful place to visit. The architecture is stunning — colorful, detailed, and picture-perfect from every angle. ⛪💛 The surroundings are calm and well-kept, making it a lovely spot to stroll, reflect, and take photos. ⭐️ 5/5 — a must-see landmark when visiting Almaty!

Beautiful Orthodox Cathedral. Gorgeous interior and exterior. Try not to wear shorts or short skirts. They have head covering scarfs available for free on site.
Anastasia G — Google review
Tucked inside peaceful Panfilov Park, Ascension Cathedral is one of Almaty’s great and free tourist attractions. Built entirely of wood without nails, its bright domes and pastel colors shine against the trees (which were snow covered in our visit in early November. This is a Russian Orthodox Church and features many beautiful murals of religious icons. There is also stunning stain glass windows and a large chandelier. Candles can be purchased from a small shop outside. Women will need to cover the head (free scarves available for loan inside) and also wear long sleeves and pants/skirts. Men need to remove all headwear. Photos can be taken but not of any people praying. Donation boxes located inside the church but otherwise free entry. Look for mural of Jesus with a six pack outside the church.

Kok Tobe is a famous mountain in Almaty, offering stunning city views and a variety of attractions. Visitors can take a cable car from the station on Dostyk Avenue to reach the park at an elevation of 1,620 meters. The ride provides breathtaking panoramic views of the city's skyline and natural landscapes. At the top, visitors can enjoy an amusement park with various rides and activities.
It was long queue ,but not a long wait at ticket counter. We paid per person 8,000 tenge for a two-way adult ticket cable car ride. From the cable car, the high angle views of the entire city and surrounding mountains is breathtaking, only if the cable car window panes are clean enough for picture takings ! As we got off the cable car, we walkes into a place with fun attractions for all ages. There are many spots to relax and enjoy the sceneries from several viewing platforms especially looking out the Zaili Alatau Mountains. It has An Amusement Park with Ferris Wheel, Merry go round, Fast Coaster, and an upside down house with activities for kids, There are souvenir shops and restaurants where we stop by MonteVerde for some food. I would say Kok Tobe is great for families with young children as most activities are geared toward kids. Nevertheless it was still great relaxing time spent !!

There are cafes, souvenir shops, and even a small amusement park it’s great for a chill walk or a date. Clean, well maintained, and worth a visit!

Kok Tobe has its charm — with cafes, music, and kids’ attractions — it’s a bit livelier than we expected. The atmosphere is more “family outing” than “quiet retreat,” with a touch of noise and activity around. If you’re after true tranquility and deeper connection with nature, you might need to wander a bit further from the main area.
Stan D — Google review
Great place to spend an evening. You can reach the top via a cable car. There are lots of activities and games on the hill. Great views of the city.
Sakina P — Google review
Kok tobe is under maintenance when we arrived, thus we go to the upper part of the area and paid 3000 tenge for the transportation going to uphill and back. When we arrived it’s already dark even though it’s still 4-5pm, the sun goes down vert early. Can seee the city lights glowing. The park is really impressive with different activities that can be done. Our most fave is the fast coaster - it’s very thrilling, if you don’t know how to break maybe it will cost your heart to beat very fast. It’s really high and fast - but one of the memorable memory that we have. Must try♥️

I really enjoyed this museum and the girl at the entrance was very helpful. So many instruments, with descriptions in 3 languages. Including English

This is a great place for those interested in examining musical instruments. There are many examples of dombra-style instruments from their original owners. You can find both stringed and wind instruments in this museum.
Süleyman U — Google review
A small but very interesting museum showcasing traditional musical instruments from Kazakhstan. The dombra and the kobyz (stringed lutes) featured heavily but harps, flutes, drums and accordions were also well displayed. The displays are beautifully presented behind anti reflection glass with signage in Russian and English. There are video presentations showing the instruments being played. Could spend about 1 hour here. There is also a gallery with international instruments from South East and Eastern Asia. Free toilets downstairs. Well worth a visit.
Timeshare C — Google review
Not a vast museum, but a densely packed one at that. They’ve got a good collection of instruments on display, not on from across Central Asia, but from around the world.

A nice museum with Kazakh instruments and instruments from around the world. Nicely labeled, including English. It takes about 1 hour to visit if taking your time and observing. If you're not interested in reading, it might only take 15 minutes.

The Abay Kazakh State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, located in the former capital of Almaty, is celebrating its 90th season. The grand opera house boasts stunning interior and exterior designs. It offers a diverse repertoire featuring international classics like Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Aida, Madam Butterfly, and Carmen alongside works by Kazakh composers. This architectural gem showcases a blend of Stalinist Empire style with Italian classicism and Kazakh elements.
FANTASTIC! Good place for arts and performances. The building gives me a traditional ambience and people are accommodating. Clean and spacious. To the theatre performances, technical and visuals are really fascinating. Performances can do better but still they pulled it off wonderfully. I love the nutcracker performance. The Madame Butterfly is also okay. I don’t like the waiting time at the food section and the small space though.

Abai Opera isn't only a culture attraction and a performance venue, but also a significant architectural landmark in Almaty. Its construction was completed in 1967, and the building quickly became one of the symbols of the city. The theater combines the elements of Soviet and classic architecture. The surrounding area has a small park and the fountains. It is a very lovely place for walking, especially during pleasant weather when locals and visitors enjoy strolling through the grounds. The building itself makes for excellent photographs, with its impressive facade creating a striking backdrop against the landscaped surroundings. Even without attending a performance, the exterior alone showcases Almaty's cultural heritage and architectural beauty. The location is easily accessible and well-integrated into the city center, making it a worthwhile stop for anyone exploring the area's cultural landmarks.

The Almaty Ballet Theatre, located near the entrance of Panfilov Park, is a beautiful cultural landmark. The building has an elegant architectural style and hosts impressive ballet and dance performances. Even from outside, it’s worth a visit for its design and atmosphere, and inside it offers a true taste of Almaty’s artistic spirit. the Almaty Ballet Theatre (often referred to as the Abay Opera and Ballet Theatre) was built during the USSR period. Perched atop Kok Tobe Hill at 1100 meters above sea level, Kok Tobe Park is a must-visit destination in Almaty, Kazakhstan. This popular park attracts both local and international tourists with its array of attractions. From a children's playground and climbing wall to the thrilling Fast Coaster ride, there's something for everyone. Visitors can also explore an art gallery, relax at a tea house, or take in panoramic views of the city and mountains.
I highly recommend visiting Kok-Tobe for a great experience, especially at sunset, which was an amazing and different experience for me. I particularly enjoyed the coaster ride, which offers a beautiful and unique view of the city. In addition to the ride, there are good shops around for picking up souvenirs. Overall, it's a fantastic spot with excellent activities for the whole family.

Great Views and Enjoyable Experience Visited during summers and it was such a great experience. The cable car ride was smooth and scenic. Once on top of the hill, you can view the entire city. Kok Tobe a fun and memorable part of my trip The cable car ride up the hill gave me these amazing views of Almaty spreading out below I keep snapping photos. Once at the top, everything felt so lively and cheerful, from the little shops and cafes to the small amusement park. I loved wandering around, taking in the view of the mountains in the distance, and just enjoying the fresh air. It was one of those places where you can really soak in the city, the scenery, and just the joyful energy all around.
FJ S — Google review
There are two ways to reach the top. 1 is through the cable car and 2 is through a bus. If you want a good view of city then take the cable car and will cost you 8000T for a round trip(Adult) / 4000T for kids. Where as the bus cost you 3500T for adults. Visit during the sunset time to have a beautiful view of sunset and the city with lights. There are so many rides and entertainment for kids including feris wheel, roller coaster 🎢, dashing cars, mountain climb etc. Carry water bottles because everything is expensive there. There is a mini zoo on the top.

The museum has some interesting exhibits, but if you’re a foreigner, the $10 entry fee just isn’t worth it. It’s ten times what locals pay, which is completely unfair. No wonder foreigners don’t visit this city or come anywhere near this place
Michele M — Google review
Really nice collection of Kazakh art from many different time periods. The museum is nicely structured and well lightened. Some people complain about the high foreigner price which I don't agree with, its good that the government subsidizes locals so they can also visit, us tourists can easily afford a 8 euro ticket.
Julien W — Google review
I was really looking forward to visiting this museum, but unfortunately, my experience was quite frustrating. The entrance fee for foreign tourists was 5,000₸, which is ten times higher than the local rate of 500₸. I understand that some countries apply differential pricing, but this kind of extreme markup felt unfair and exploitative especially since the foreigner pricing was only displayed at the ticket booth, not online. I had done research in advance and wasn’t aware of this huge price gap, which felt intentionally hidden. To make matters worse, the conditions inside were unacceptable. There was no AC even though it was 38°C outside, and the indoor environment was stifling. I was sweating so much that my back was completely soaked. The staff members were using brochures to fan themselves, clearly also struggling with the heat. On top of that, many of the exhibit rooms were dark, with no lights turned on, so I had to rely on faint sunlight through nearby windows to even see the artworks. The exhibition itself was also disappointingly small. And due to the poor lighting and oppressive heat, I couldn’t even appreciate the pieces that were on display. It made me question what exactly I paid 5,000₸ for. While I still love Kazakhstan and had many wonderful experiences here, this visit left a bad impression. It felt like foreign visitors were being treated as easy targets for inflated fees, without being offered the basic comfort or quality that should come with the price. I even saw other tourists at the ticket booth turn away once they saw the pricing. I rarely leave negative reviews, but in this case, I feel compelled to say: not recommended. I have photos and videos that show exactly what I described; the heat, the darkness. I truly hope the museum reconsiders its pricing and facilities for the sake of future visitors. P.S. they did start to turn on the lights(ridiculous to even mention) when I was leaving. English not provided or provided minimal which I think its close to nothing. So english reliant tourists, dont waste your money and time here..
Suhyoung J — Google review

Wow! What a beautiful experience. I took my time and I went alone, although I'm sure it would make a great date spot for friends who love art. Each room was expansively filled with such amazing images. The attendants in each room were kind and welcoming. I spent about 2 two hours walking through but right away I had some favourite pieces. I found a bench and took a moment to write about a few of them. The auntie in the gift shop was gentle and informative in both English and Russian. Her tone was gentle and I'm sure I could have listened to her read. Altogether, my experience at the art museum is a favourite part of my adventures in this country so far. Thank you to the staff and admin that made the experience a good one.

One of the worst designed shopping mall I have ever seen in my life. Even the 50 year old malls won't make you fell stressed you out like this one here. Such a low ceiling, it makes you feel like you are in an underground metro station. What kinda genius architect and construction company came up with this plan to build such a crazy shopping mall. There is only one thing nice here, the cafes near the main road. That's it. If you go here for shopping you gonna face such a great disappointment. Not the right place to go shop in the city.

The Memorial of Glory, located in the Kok Tobe Park atop a 1100-meter mountain, is a significant tribute to Kazakh soldiers who fought in World Wars I and II. The park also features the iconic TV tower, visible from anywhere in Almaty at night. The memorial stands as a solemn reminder of the heroic sacrifices made during wartime. Visitors can stroll through the expansive park with its old trees and wide footpaths or enjoy live music performances in the central square.
A very moving and meaningful place in Almaty. The Eternal Flame in Panfilov Park honors the memory of soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War II. The atmosphere around the monument is calm and respectful, and the flame itself is beautifully maintained. Surrounded by greenery and important monuments like the Memorial of Glory, it is a place where you can pause, reflect, and pay your respects. A must-visit spot in Panfilov Park for anyone who values history and remembrance.
Shabeer H — Google review
It is perhaps the most imposing structure in the whole park. The monument is homage to the Kazakh soldiers who fought during the world wars in the past century. It is a common photoshoot area for locals and tourists.

Located just behind Zenkov cathedral. It is one of the famous historical structures of Almaty and also a popular tourist attraction. Nice place to spend time. Green Bazar and Rakhat chocolate factory are both just a few blocks away from this place...

We visited Panfilov’s park and at the end it turned out that Memorial of Glory is under renovation…. The deadline is not clear (that’s fine when you live in CA)
Shukhrat U — Google review
he Memorial of Glory is a memorial complex in Almaty, Kazakhstan, installed in the Park named after 28 Panfilov Guardsmen for the 30th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War. The eternal flame was lit as part of the complex. In 1974, architects T.K. Basenov, R.A. Seydalin and V.N. Kim created a project for the memorial complex, which was supposed to be located in the park named after 28 Panfilov Guardsmen. It was planned to build a triptych dedicated to the establishment of Soviet power in Kazakhstan and the victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War, as well as a special pedestal for the eternal flame. On May 8, 1975 the memorial complex was solemnly opened. The authors of the sculptures were V. V. Andryushchenko and A.E. Artimovich.
Girish S — Google review
Lovely monument in a nice park - there was also a military parade
Giacomo — Google review
Cousin to a Soviet stone symphony, this memorial hits like a Red Army drumroll in the heart of Panfilov Park. Unveiled in 1975, it honors the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen who (allegedly) stopped Nazi tanks near Moscow with sheer Kazakh grit and maybe a touch of Soviet exaggeration. Monumental bronze figures surge out of black granite like they’re storming straight through time. Every face carved with heroic resolve, every angle designed to intimidate.. this is not a place for subtlety. Behind them burns an eternal flame flanked by honor guards who make standing still an Olympic sport. Great for history buffs, militaria fans, and pigeons looking for a dramatic perch. Just don’t expect nuance, this is pure Soviet drama carved in stone.

Mega Park is a busy and bustling shopping mall in Almaty. It has a range of shops and restaurants, as well as a cinema and play area for children. The mall is located near the university district, making it popular with students.
Smaller than another Mega mall. Location very good. Clean and design also cool, almost all high brand available. Only one things need to check always, my wife complains about female toilets no tissues. Maybe finish or staff forgot to renew.. Still in my opinion five stars mall, keep doing same please

A good mall in the middle of the city. You will be happy to see some branded showrooms. Ambience is good and every type of shopping is available. Parking has adequate space. There are so many places for kids to enjoy and food court is also a decent one.
Saurabh T — Google review
Mega Park is a spacious and vibrant shopping center with a fantastic variety of brands, offering something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for fashion, electronics, beauty products, or unique finds, the selection here is truly diverse. It’s not just a place for shopping—it’s a place for leisure, relaxation, and entertainment. One of the best things about Mega Park is that it’s perfect for a casual stroll, even if you’re not planning to buy anything. Just wandering through the stores, exploring new collections, and soaking in the lively atmosphere makes for a fun experience. It’s a great spot for “window shopping therapy” and a refreshing break from the daily routine. Today, we picked up a few small things to lift our mood, and the whole visit felt like a mini escape from the ordinary. Whether you’re here for serious shopping, grabbing a bite at the cafes, or simply enjoying the vibe, Mega Park is a fantastic place to spend time. Highly recommended!

Esentai Mall in Almaty is a unique destination designed for shopping and entertainment. It offers a fitness club, spa, children's entertainment areas, and easy access for both transport and pedestrians. The mall also features The Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Esentai Apartments, and a nearby park. With international brands like Burberry and Michael Kors offering discounts of up to 70%, it's popular among locals and tourists.
If you are looking for high-end luxury brands, this mall suits you. nicely organized, but a bit hot i would say the atmosphere outside is colder than the inside (went here in May). Supermarket is huge. Easy access
Crystaline C — Google review
Esentai Mall is one of the most luxurious malls in Almaty – a perfect place for premium shopping and leisure. The mall has a very modern design with all the top international brands, making it a great spot for those who enjoy luxury shopping. I also found Esentai Supermarket on the ground floor, which was a pleasant surprise. Bought food for dinner along with some snacks, dry fruits, and fresh fruits – all were of very good quality and tasty. Overall, a must-visit in Almaty if you’re looking for a mix of luxury shopping and quality food options.
Shabeer H — Google review
Good mall with all high end luxury brands like saks fifth avenue, LV, Gucci etc. Very luxe looking place with good fine dining eateries. Only bad experience I had with the help desk staff who were downright rude and arrogant and also borderline racist. Their job is to help people.
Roshan M — Google review
When it comes to luxurious shopping in Almaty, Esentai Mall would most likely be the best choice. Located in the south (upper) part of the city, near the intersection of Al-Farabi Avenue and the eponymous Esentai river (previously known as Malaya Almatinka), it offers visitors a large variety of the world's most famous luxury brands, including Fendi, Yves Saint Laurent, Dior and plenty of others. There are some eateries, a supermarket and cinema as well.

One of the boring and flushy malls. Only for up market luxury brands. There is no normal or average shops. Wasting the time.

Great mall with many stores, delicious restaurants and even a movie theater. Quite organized but the direction signs within the mall could be a bit more clear on things such as escalators and elevators. Apart from that, an exceptional mall right across from Ritz Carlton hotel.

The D.A. Konaev House Museum is a fascinating tribute to the life of Dinmukhamed Kunaev, a prominent Soviet politician who played a significant role in Kazakhstan's history. Nestled in his former residence, this museum offers visitors an intimate look at his life and legacy through various personal artifacts and gifts from notable figures. The two-story building showcases not only historical items but also provides insight into the political landscape of Soviet Kazakhstan.
For 1000KZT this was a blast! Information was also displayed in English which was very helpful. Staff was nice. The apartment is open only Wednesdays and Saturdays, and the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday. You need to visit this museum if you want to get a glimpse of the past century jn Kazakhstan. Totally recommend it.

It seems we came during Sunday when the apartment part was closed, so the museum felt rather small to us. It felt modern with English translations, but everything felt a little disassociated; they should definitely have a better introduction of the man at the beginning explaining who he was before going into more detail. It costs 1,500 a person when we were there.

Also gifts from diferents celebrities/politicians. - ‎Almost all descriptions are in kazakh and russian. - ‎There is a english guide that work as a volunteer. She is so frienly and know pretty well all the history and anecdotes of Kunaev. We loved her. I recommend visit this museum.

In the stunning city of Almaty, visitors can find the Baiken Mosque, a remarkable architectural gem inaugurated in 2014 at the behest of Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev. The mosque's design seamlessly blends traditional Islamic elements with modern touches, creating a truly captivating sight. Stepping inside reveals a spacious and serene environment that fosters tranquility and reflection. Maintained with great care, the mosque offers a pristine setting for prayer and contemplation.
I recently had the opportunity to visit the Baiken Mosque in Almaty for the Fajr prayer, and it was an experience I won't forget. The mosque's architecture is a breathtaking blend of traditional Islamic designs with a modern twist, making it stand out beautifully. Inside, it's incredibly spacious and exudes a sense of peace and tranquility, which is perfect for prayer and reflection. The care put into maintaining its cleanliness is evident and truly commendable. Right next to the mosque, the Muslima Bookshop, managed by Zhayna, is a gem. It's not just any bookshop; it's a vibrant cultural spot. Zhayna's enthusiasm and knowledge about Islamic literature and culture are impressive. The range of books and resources she offers is extensive, catering to a variety of interests. Whether you're looking for something specific or just browsing, her guidance is invaluable. Visiting the mosque and the bookshop felt like a journey through a rich cultural and spiritual landscape. It's a must-visit for anyone in Almaty, whether you're there to pray, learn, or just soak in the serene atmosphere. Visitors can explore a collection that includes Soviet military artifacts, intriguing items from World War II, and more. The museum offers an insightful look into the region's military history, making it a worthwhile stop during your trip to Turkestan.
Easily one of the best museums in the world. Not the biggest but the staff working there are so down to earth. Did not ask for a guide and just wanted to look but they got someone to explain to us the everything that was in the museum and more! Many museums are pretty strict on being touchy of the exhibits but we were allowed to touch some stuff. I cannot recommend this place enough. A must go location when in Almaty and great for history lovers. Did I also mention that this place is free?

We had the pleasure of meeting a truly exceptional staff Zhu De at the war museum. He speaks English fluently! Out of all the museums I have seen in Kazakhstan, this one was my favourite not just because I like WW2 history but because it was in English . Not only in English , but guided in English by a very nice and warm local kid. You can see he is passionate, but not oppressive of other ideas and questions . He was interested about where I was from and he seemed open to discuss various prospectives on the history he was telling . The museum itself is not the best in the world but it goes into the specifics which I like . The real jewel is the guide and the old man who works there aswell, both of whom were very welcoming. Not to mention its super cheap and situated in an area with plenty nice stuff to see

I visited the mall today and was horrified to see a small black-tipped reef shark in a tiny aquarium, along with a couple of huge eels. The shark in particular was distressing to see, as it was swimming round and round the tank, which is clearly insufficient in size for such a creature. The shark had an injury to the pectoral fin that was continually bumping into the glass. The eels also appeared to be distressed. Despite the ‘no touching’ sign, people continued to tap the glass while I watched. These animals should be free in the ocean, not kept in inadequate stressful conditions for the viewing pleasure of shoppers. Very disappointing and I hope this will be reconsidered. If it makes a difference, I’m a veterinarian.

In addition to providing a variety of useful and enjoyable purchases, ADK also offers leisure activities. Within the mall, there are multiple amenities such as Chaplin Cinema with six rooms for movie viewing, Kinderville Childrens Amusement Park and Savanka Childrens Town for kids' entertainment.
Its a m Shopping mall at satpeav Almaty, I was stating in Atakant, and after 8 pm need to exchange money so came to know that jusan bank which open till 10 pm inside this mall so went there for money exchange, the mall is big, cheap and best for daily shopping, around this mall the area is very good so many night clubs and fine dine restaurants.
Pankaj M — Google review
This location is listed as a supermarket, but when attempting to leave a review, it appears as a hotel, which is incorrect. I am working to rectify this issue, but I am not entirely sure why it is showing up as a hotel. The mall itself is quite good, compact, and features all the popular brands in town. However, they have been delayed in fixing their parking kiosks, and they currently only accept cash, except for the kiosk on the right side of the building.
Azat K — Google review
Hey management. You need to teach your parking attendans to be nice. Yes I did lose my ticket. Paid for replacement. But there is no need for your attenda to me mean and almost yelling at me. I understand he might of had a bad day. Or somebody pissed into his coffee or a wife didn't give him morning loving. Overall the shopping mall is ok. But a the big boss of parking lot can leave a nasty taste of all experience.

This mall is a great place to spend time. I have the feeling that it is because of the grocery store A-store. Almost half of the first floor is this store. Unfortunately the food court is full of fast food which is Burgers and pizza. The parking that is located on the right side is bigger and there you can always find a place.
Ainur Z — Google review
Biggest plaza in this part of the city, superstore, cinema, fastfood, brand boutiques can be found here. Free parking for 2 hours and less, no problems with parking place - area is huge. The main superstore also named ADK, overall not so cheap as Magnum, but defenetly have better choice of cheeses and vine, same as fish and meat products.
Eugene Y — Google review
Would have been my favorite supermarket if some products were a little cheaper. You can get most European/Western food and beverages here. Don't bother buying the cakes - they're far from good.

It's a good Trade Center, but not so big, i'd say it is medium size. It has all the things, what must have this type mall. Particullarly, there are car parking zone and it was for free happily, a cinema, a food court and of course, many boutiques, a supermarket and so on. If you are modern, pop-culture young man, you will enjoy this place, in my opinion. I wouldn't say that i recommend to visit this center, but it's a quite nice spot to waste time, a bit noisy, truly. ART Hostel is a small and basic accommodation with six bedrooms, offering mixed dorms within walking distance of main attractions. It is nestled in a residential area close to amenities and accessible from the airport by bus. The hostel features a basic kitchen and clean shower/bathrooms, although some facilities like the filtered water tap may not work properly. Despite this, guests appreciate the artful decoration in the kitchen and cozy capsules for sleeping.
This hostel is great! The kitchen is artfully decorated and large. The shower/bathrooms are clean, no water pile up, modern. The capsules are wide and cozy (but the lights next to bed don’t work, my only complaint). But the people working here take the cake!!! The receptionist went above and beyond to make sure we found our next ride/destination. And kept in contact with our driver to check up if/when we made it/made sure we had enough cash to get there. Honestly, have not seen that much effort put in willingly to help guests. :) thank you so much, art hostel!!!

A small basic hostel nestled in a residential block close to amenities. The bus from the airport stops close to the hostel. When I arrived at the property at around 9pm, there was no staff in the reception for checking me in. A resident who can speak English helped me and contacted the staff. Also during check out, there was no one in the reception and I just left the keys behind and left. The kitchen is basic and although there is a filtered water tap, it didn't work. There is only one shower shared by the residents so there can sometimes be a queue.

The staff is super friendly and helpful. The prices are fair - 2,500 KZT per night. The kitchen is nice, it has a fridge, microwave and untensils. One possible improvement is to have a couple of desk where one can work on a laptop.

One of the best hostels I've come across. I initially planned on staying just one night but ended up staying nine nights! It's very comfortable with all the facilities including a well equipped kitched. There are markets, cafe and restaurants nearby. It's around a couple of km. from the central area but calm and peaceful.

Disappointed with the room - had poor nights sleep: AC was old, made lots of noise and didn’t cool the room. The blinds were terrible and did nothing to stop the light coming through in the morning at 5am! The attic room had a partition not a wall, there was a gap at the top meaning all the noise from downstairs easily came into our room. Expensive compared to other hostels in area. Not enough wash facilities for number of guests. Friendly and helpful staff and good common areas.
Matthew — Google review
I booked private room in this hostel. Overall stay was not good. The most annoying thing which I felt was that room is next to dinning area where guest makes noise and it disturbed me. I was not able to sleep because of that. My check in time was 2 pm but I reached early around 10 am. But forget about early check in. They gave me room around 3 pm. It was so annoying. They have mentioned air conditioning in all rooms but in my private room there was no AC. Last point, after cooking I had clean my all the used utensils but while checking out staff asked me to clean the utensils she thought I did not clean it. Location is good. There is near by grocery store and bus stands.

Beautiful hostel , private rooms are spacious. One can have their meals downstairs infront of the kitchen ( kettle , oven, stove , utensils , water all available in kitchen) . 2 Washrooms are available in all , 1 on each floor so it gets crowded a bit during peak tourist seasons. However otherwise during off seasons the hostel ambience is just so peaceful and satisfying. We saw the lawn turning from all snowy to green during March this year . It felt so homely and complete.
Sinthia P — Google review
Very mediocre hostel Plus: location, roomy kitchen and living area...kinda clean though could be better, the cat. Negative: no hospitality at all, the staff consisting of 2 guys do the bare minimum. Give you sheets thats it. They are mostly gaming or sleeping, not keeping the place nice and tidy. No AC on 8 bed dorm so i moved to the 10 dorm. Way to small for 10 beds. Also just 1 bathroom for like 20+ beds. Paying at checkin was mandatory, I payed for nights however after 1 night i wanted to leave, so wanted to checkout at 7am. Nobody at the reception. Seemed that the boys were still sleeping in my dorm so I had to wake them up. I DIDNT GET THE 2ND REFUNDED. The guy did text the owner however i had to approach him two times actively what the deal was. He didnt approach me, he was just sitting in the living room on his phone. Terms are to say the evening in advance, whats the difference with 7am? Owner is obviously not there to talk too. Also the vibe was weird. Wouldn't recommend.
H. K — Google review
Average hostel. It was clean and kitchen was well equipped and common areas were ok. Because of how it had been converted from a house sound proofing was not great with gaps in the walls. Had 3 bathrooms but 1 was in a dorm so there was aways waiting times. If it had better bathroom families I would recommend it higher. Preferred their sister hostel as it had better facilities and generally was more comfortable.
Karl L — Google review
Hostel is maintained well, one has to take off shoes outside, but it is good to maintain cleanliness. Very strict about early check-in, room was vacant still we were not allowed, were demanding half day room rent, it's a standard practice that room can be allotted at least 2 hours prior. Location is very far from city center, one has to change buses and walk to reach.

(Translated by Google) There are a lot of units. On July 20, my husband and I held our wedding here. I'll tell you why you should choose a different restaurant for your event. I have been in the field of event organization for many years and have enormous experience. We chose the establishment based on budget and location, but 18,500 per person is a decent amount; there are much cheaper places in the city and suburbs, this is no secret. The price is NOT low, the price is average. Doesn't match what you receive. Dina will pull out money for everything! Once she called us at one in the morning asking us to transfer her 🍋 a month or two before the wedding because she forgot to order fish! If your administrator is Dina, run as fast as you can and throw salt over your shoulder. He will promise you mountains, but nothing will happen, keep this in mind. I was lucky that I asked MY GUESTS to come in advance to help, but do you know what they were doing?) They were scrubbing off the FAT from the numbers that are on the tables. During the event, when US NEWLYWEDS were toasting, Dina decided it was time to take the rest 💵 I didn’t believe the negative comments on 2GIS, but just think about it. The alcohol disappeared instantly. The guests were self-sufficient. Her mobile phone will interfere with your entire event and spoil your photos and videos. In the midst of the event, children ran into the banquet! Other people's children! They started grabbing people from tables and filming them. We immediately said that the wedding would be WITHOUT CHILDREN. Until I got up from the podium and went MYSELF to ask the waiters to kick the children out, nothing happened until I started screaming! Not the most pleasant sight for guests at a wedding! Dina was probably smoking somewhere as usual! You can’t rip off any extra money right away 🤷🏼‍♀️ Besh was disgusting! Sorry I didn't have time to take a photo. A sea of dough and onions. The compote Dina promised did not come. And yes! We forced her to enter into an agreement, if you decide to hold an event in this establishment - MAKE AN AGREEMENT! Everything that was written - FROM US - was missing, except for the fruit.

There is a beautiful terrace with views of the mountains and the city. (Original) Небольшой уютный зал занимали компанией: уютно, атмосферно, кухня и обслуживание на уровне. Имеется красивая терраса с видами на горы, город.

(Translated by Google) Uncomfortable. Huge areas are half empty. Sellers may be absent and I had to call them with the help of security, and then wait. I found what I was looking for all over the city. The new department with dishes on the 2nd floor was just being occupied. Thanks a lot. Apparently I was the first buyer, they sold me the product at a decent discount. For a pensioner this is joy, happiness and good luck🤗 (Original) Неуютно.

Thora T — Google review
(Translated by Google) After the “restoration” the building became smaller, the western part of the building became shorter, just “giving” space to a new commercial building. Instead of the Museum of Hydrometeorology, there is now a private company here. (Original) После "реставрации" здание стало меньше, западная часть здания стала короче как раз "отдавая" место новому коммерческом зданию. Вместо музея Гидрометеорологии здесь теперь находится частная компания.
