The Odisha State Museum, established in 1932, originated from a collection of archaeological treasures by historians. Initially focused on archaeology, it now houses over 55,000 exhibits spanning various sections including archaeology, natural history, art and craft. The museum showcases sculptures, terracotta, numismatics, copper plates and fine arts. Visitors can explore musical instruments, rare palm leaf manuscripts, coins and Orissan tribal artifacts among other historical relics.
I visited this place few years back.. but now they have added many new galleries and the collection is very attractive and unique. Kids will learn a lot. As a antique lover I enjoyed each and every gallery. A must visit place.

I went to the Odisha State Museum last month, and it was pretty cool. I loved checking out all the art, artifacts, and cultural stuff there. You could easily spend a couple of hours, or even more, just looking at all the art that shows off Indian and Odisha's culture. Plus, the museum is clean and well-kept. The ticket price is totally worth it. I'd definitely recommend it for school trips and tourists in Odisha.

You will not even realize how your time will pass after going here. You will see many sculptures here. The most beautiful sculpture that I found was the Ganesha idol. Here is the history of each sculpture and here you will see everything from beautiful colours to beautiful things. Be it a garden, animal sculptures or anything else. There was a very lovely painting of Lord Jagannath. That too was very beautiful here. Its entry fee is also very low, so you can go here with your family and children and have a picnic. You can also spend your time here. You can also give your children knowledge of colors. I have seen many families here who have come to spend time with their children and to teach them.

It's one the hiking places that requires a pair of good legs, you have to walk a lot if you want to learn otherwise it's a waste of time. That place contains place for aestheticity and is a broad place to be proud of our culture. You may ask the guides to describe more than what you already see, no cafeteria but water filter is there, you can take food just don't litter around. A beautiful garden and rooms having ACs, perfect place to visit during summer. Science, Arts students must visit, idk about commerce but they should visit too just be proud of their culture.
Ananya D — Google review
A very beautiful museum with a good cloak room! You can learn a lot about Buddha, as well as see an excellent display of mines and minerals. Other sections are also quite good. It’s a great place for school students to visit. Don’t forget to carry a water bottle. They charge an extra ₹10 for mobile photography
Santosh S — Google review
It's a fantastic place to explore—definitely worth visiting at least once. You can even go with kids; it's suitable for a family outing. I couldn’t see the entire museum because I arrived at 4 PM and it closed by 5:30. If you're planning a visit, make sure to set aside at least 2 to 3 hours to fully enjoy it.
Sidharth M — Google review
Museum is where artifacts as well as history is preserved. One have to buy ticket for entry and parking is available inside the premises. Parking is free of cost. Visit once with family and friends. Good for children and beside museum park is there for enjoy. Wheelchair facility is available. Lift is also there. Inside the museum courtyard there is a garden for taking good pictures. Anyone who loves art, can give a visit to the art gallery and praise the artist's painting.

The Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves near Bhubaneswar are a must-visit for history and nature lovers. These ancient rock-cut caves, dating back to the 2nd century BCE, beautifully showcase Odisha's rich Jain heritage and King Kharavela's legacy. The carvings and inscriptions at Udayagiri, especially the Rani Gumpha and Hathigumpha, are truly fascinating. The view from the top of the hill is breathtaking, especially during sunset. The site is well-maintained and offers a peaceful atmosphere surrounded by greenery. Perfect place to explore history, architecture, and spirituality together. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Bhubaneswar!
Amit P — Google review
Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves, just on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, was like stepping into a quiet conversation between history, spirituality, and nature. These ancient caves, carved into hills more than 2,000 years ago, once served as dwellings for Jain monks during the reign of King Kharavela. But today, they offer much more than just a glimpse into the past — they offer an experience that’s both humbling and inspiring. I started with Udayagiri, which is slightly more developed and archaeologically significant. The moment you enter, you’re greeted by stunning rock-cut facades and intricately carved reliefs depicting royal processions, animals, and symbols from Jain mythology. The Rani Gumpha (Queen’s Cave), with its two-storeyed structure and detailed carvings, completely captivated me. It’s amazing to think how such precision was achieved so many centuries ago, using the simplest tools. Climbing through the caves felt like a spiritual trek — not just physically upwards, but inward as well. As I moved from chamber to chamber, I could almost imagine the monks meditating in the cool, dark interiors, surrounded by silence and stone. Across the road, Khandagiri is less elaborate but offers a raw, natural charm. The climb to the top is a bit steep, but absolutely worth it. From there, you get a panoramic view of Bhubaneswar — modern city life unfolding below a hill that holds echoes of ancient wisdom. What made the experience even more memorable was the peaceful atmosphere. The soft rustle of leaves, the chirping of birds, and the occasional sound of a temple bell in the distance made it feel like time had slowed down. It’s a place that encourages stillness and reflection — a rare gift in today’s fast-paced world. Whether you're a history lover, a spiritual seeker, or simply someone who enjoys scenic places, Udayagiri and Khandagiri offer a rich, quiet beauty that stays with you long after you've left.
Vinod S — Google review
Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves are not only significant for their historical and architectural value but also for their spiritual importance. They offer a glimpse into the lives of ancient Jain monks and their practices. The site is surrounded by lush greenery, providing a serene and peaceful atmosphere for visitors.

The best time to visit this place is early morning because it’s peaceful, less crowded, and the sunrise looks amazing. It’s a must-visit for art lovers, architects, artists, historians, and anyone interested in mythology. I love this place not only for its beautiful ancient caves but also for the lush greenery that has been wonderfully preserved around them.

We simply loved visiting this architectural marvel. The caves themselves with their intricate work were breathtaking. to think that such constructions were carried out during the ancient period baffles us. The Odisha government seems to be taking sincere efforts to maintain the structures. the footpaths and conveniences for tourists were also good. a must visit place if you are a Bhubaneswar

We recently visited Udayagiri in Bhubaneswar, and it was a wonderful experience. The place is rich in history and offers a deep insight into India’s ancient heritage. The rock-cut caves and carvings are truly impressive and worth exploring. Our visit was made even better by our guide, Mr. Mitra, who explained everything beautifully. He shared the historical background of each cave in an engaging and easy-to-understand way. He was courteous, patient, and ensured we didn’t miss any important detail. Thanks to him, we were able to appreciate the true significance of Udayagiri. Overall, it was an excellent experience, and I highly recommend both the site and Mr. Mitra’s guiding service to anyone visiting Bhubaneswar.

A must visit for anyone interested in Indian heritage , history and architecture . These caves excavated on two hills for use of Jain monks were commissioned in 1 BC and were in use till the time of Somavamshis ( 10 -11 CE) . The rock cut caves are amazing for their artistry and efficient layout . The Rani Gumpha is notable for being a two storied structure . The Hathi Gumpha Inscription found in Udayagiri gives historical details of wars win by King Kharavela ( in 1 BC) and grants and public welfare projects made by him . The monuments are very well maintained . Plenty of Langur monkeys around . Vehicles can only stop for drop and pick up , parking is at a different place . On week ends it gets very crowded . Entrance is ticketed , currently Rs25 for Indians. Separate ticket only for Video Cameras . Open from 8am to 5pm . At the base , one can find dozens of bustling snack kiosks . For safety , there is a police outpost close by .

Raja Rani Temple is a very beautiful temple. When you go here, you will come to know that this temple is very old. It is one of the oldest temples in Bhubaneswar. The garden here is very lovely. It will look very beautiful. It is also very well maintained. You will also get the facility of washroom here. People can go and sit here. You can also spend time with your family or you will have to pay a small entry fee to go here. Caution - If you want to go here, then keep one thing in mind that you should go only after drinking water and the right time to go here is to go either in the early morning or in the evening, do not go in the afternoon. If it is summer time or winter time, you can go anytime. In summer, the sun will fall on your head and you may feel very hot. You may get heat stroke.

Rajarani Temple made in 11th century BC is one of the most beautiful and peaceful heritage sites in Bhubaneswar. The intricate carvings on the red and golden sandstone are simply mesmerizing, showcasing the unmatched artistry of the Kalinga style of architecture. Currently the inner part of temple have no god & goddess statue. The Rajarani Temple has no presiding deity because the original idol was removed when the sanctum collapsed, and it was never replaced. The temple was originally dedicated to Lord Shiva. The lush gardens surrounding the temple are well maintained, making it a perfect place to take a slow walk and enjoy the serenity. What makes it even more special is the calm atmosphere — it’s never too crowded, and you can really soak in the spiritual and historical vibe. Don’t miss visiting during the golden hour; the temple glows beautifully in the evening light. This site is maintained by ASI and they charge ₹20(UPI)-₹30 (Cash) per Indian person. Parking is the little bit issue here.

Rajarani Temple, an exquisite 11th-century marvel in Bhubaneswar, stands out with its elegant Kalinga-style architecture carved from red and yellow sandstone . Unlike most temples, it houses no deity; it's called a "love temple" due to its sensual sculptures of couples, dancers, and celestial beings adorning every wall. The temple’s layout features a soaring central spire (vimana) around 18 m high and a pyramidal jagamohana, showcasing fine craftsmanship and mini-spires reminiscent of Khajuraho. Positioned in a well-kept garden, it offers a peaceful retreat within the city. Open daily from 6:30 AM to 7:30 PM, a nominal entry fee of ₹20 pay online for Indians and ₹250 for foreigners goes toward upkeep ). The annual Rajarani Music Festival held here in January–February adds cultural charm. While interior maintenance could improve—some visitors note dim lighting and occasional bats—the temple’s artistic finesse and serene setting make it a must-visit for architecture and heritage enthusiasts.

It's clean inside. Suggested to visit during evening hours to elevate your emotional state among the finely maintained grass field, surrounding trees & a magnificent beauty that is Rajarani Temple. Ticket price 25/-(offline) 20/-(Online). Make sure to park you vehicle on the right side parking area of the temple entrance. The temple complex features intricately carved stone towers, courtyards, and numerous shrines. According to ancient inscriptions and Sanskrit treatises, the temple is at the center of a sacred area surrounded by other significant temples and mango groves.
Visiting the temple was truly a remarkable experience, filled with a sense of peace and spirituality. The intricate architecture and the detailed carvings are absolutely breathtaking, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship. It was fascinating to witness the rituals and ceremonies performed with such devotion and precision. The atmosphere surrounding the temple creates a feeling of serenity, allowing for moments of introspection. What can I say about Lingaraj Temple, it has such a good history. You can google it anywhere. You will find its history at every place. When was it built, how was it built, where was it built? But I will tell you about the management here. I liked the management here. Now see, the thing is that when you go to keep your shoes or phone here, they will ask you for money and A don't know they charge ₹20 for keeping the phone. They also charge ₹20 for shoes.. I don't know why they do this, I feel that this should be a free service and we should give as much as we wish. After going inside this temple, you will see Lord Shiva. Here inside this temple, you will find many gods. If you want, you can also see them there.

Lingaraj Temple is one of the most famous and ancient temples in Odisha, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built in the 11th century, it is a masterpiece of Kalinga architecture with its towering spire, intricate carvings, and grand layout. The temple complex has many smaller shrines, and the main deity is worshipped as Harihara, a combined form of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. The spiritual atmosphere inside is powerful and deeply moving, and thousands of devotees visit daily. The temple is not only a religious center but also an architectural wonder that reflects Odisha’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
Biswobhusan M — Google review
The Lingaraj Temple, nestled in the heart of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, is nothing short of awe-inspiring. As one of the finest examples of Kalinga architecture, it offers a deep spiritual aura and architectural brilliance that leaves both devotees and tourists mesmerized. Architecture & Atmosphere: Dating back to the 11th century (with parts possibly even older), the temple is a sprawling complex made of intricately carved sandstone. The towering deula (main spire) stands at over 180 feet and dominates the Bhubaneswar skyline. The craftsmanship is extraordinary—every wall, pillar, and gateway tells stories from Hindu mythology through detailed carvings. The temple complex is well-maintained and consists of over 60 smaller shrines, each with its own significance. The symmetry, layout, and sheer scale evoke a sense of grandeur and reverence. Spiritual Experience: Dedicated to Lord Shiva in his form as Harihara (a fusion of Shiva and Vishnu), the temple draws thousands of pilgrims each year. The sanctum is deeply revered, and even those who aren’t particularly religious can feel the peace and power within its ancient walls. The daily rituals, chants, and scent of incense create an atmosphere that feels timeless.

Beautiful temple. Worth watching. We had to keep our phones, shoes and even umbrellas outside the temple, there was a place just beside the entrance where you can keep those for 30-40 rupees in total. Temple premises was huge, beautiful architect, clean environment, and numbers of temples are there, people staying 108 temples. It took us more than 1hour to completely explore exery corner. Main temple was huge. Locals told us that before 9am you can go near that main shivling in the main temple, but we went there at evening so we had to see it from a distance. Nice experience, beautiful ambience. I loved it.

Lingaraj Temple – Bhubaneswar Lingaraj Temple is the heart of Bhubaneswar’s ancient charm. Built in the 11th century, this magnificent structure celebrates Lord Shiva in his grandest form. The towering spire, intricate carvings, and rhythmic temple bells create an atmosphere charged with spirituality. The sacred Bindusagar Lake beside it adds serenity to the divine experience. The temple reflects the perfect blend of Kalinga architecture and deep devotion. Chants of “Har Har Mahadev” echo in every corner, reminding visitors of Lord Shiva’s timeless power. Lingaraj is not just a temple—it’s a living example of India’s spiritual brilliance and cultural unity.

The Lingaraj Temple, located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, is one of the oldest and largest temples in the state. The main deity, Lord Lingaraj, is worshipped as a self-originated Shivalinga (Swayambhu). The temple is unique because it brings together both Shaivism and Vaishnavism, symbolizing harmony between the two traditions. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Harihara, a combined form of Shiva and Vishnu. The temple beautifully represents the Kalinga style of architecture and stands as a masterpiece of Odisha’s temple heritage. The temple was built in the 11th century CE by the Somavamsi kings and later expanded by the Ganga dynasty. The complex is surrounded by high walls and contains over 50 smaller shrines besides the main temple. The main spire (vimana) rises to about 180 feet (55 meters), dominating the Bhubaneswar skyline. The temple follows the Deula style, with four main parts: Vimana (sanctum sanctorum) Jagamohana (assembly hall) Natamandira (festival hall) Bhoga-mandapa (hall of offerings) The walls are richly decorated with carvings of deities, dancers, and mythological scenes, showing the extraordinary artistry of ancient Odia sculptors.

Nestled atop the serene Dhauli Hills in Odisha, the Dhauli Shanti Stupa, also known as the Peace Pagoda, is a stunning white structure that radiates tranquility. Constructed in 1972 through a collaboration between Japanese and Indian Buddhist organizations, this remarkable shrine serves as a poignant reminder of Emperor Ashoka's transformation from a conqueror to an advocate for peace following the Kalinga War.
The Dhauli Shanti Stupa, located near Bhubaneswar in Odisha, holds great historical and spiritual significance. It is believed to be the site of the Kalinga War (261 BCE), where Emperor Ashoka witnessed massive bloodshed that changed his heart. Deeply moved, Ashoka renounced violence and embraced Buddhism, spreading messages of peace and compassion. The Japanese Buddhist Sangha later built the white Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa) here in 1972, symbolizing harmony and non-violence. Surrounded by ancient rock edicts of Ashoka and serene landscapes, Dhauli Shanti Stupa stands as a reminder of transformation, peace, and the universal message of brotherhood. Experience: Not much to explore, but it is a peaceful and pleasant place to visit. The four statues of Buddha each depict a story. I am not sure if private vehicles are allowed near the temple, as we traveled there on a small government bus. The four Buddha statues at Dhauli Shanti Stupa (Peace Pagoda), Odisha represent the four significant stages of Lord Buddha’s life. Each statue is placed facing one direction of the stupa, symbolizing peace and compassion: Birth of Buddha (Lumbini) – Depicts the moment of Siddhartha Gautama’s birth. Enlightenment (Bodh Gaya) – Represents Buddha attaining enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. First Sermon (Sarnath) – Symbolizes the "Dharmachakra Pravartan" (Turning of the Wheel of Dharma) when he first taught the path. Mahaparinirvana (Kushinagar) – Depicts Buddha’s final departure from the world, symbolizing eternal peace. These statues together narrate Buddha’s journey and convey the message of non-violence, compassion, and universal peace.

I recently visited the Dhauli Shanti Stupa as part of my Puri tour, and it was truly a serene experience! The peaceful surroundings and stunning architecture of the stupa are breathtaking. The white and gold color scheme is visually striking. Highlights: - Peaceful Ambiance: Perfect for meditation and relaxation. - Beautiful Architecture: The stupa's design and colors are impressive. - Buddha Statue : The statue is beautifully crafted. Suggestion: - Accessibility: There seems to be no clear entrance or option to explore the inside of the stupa. Consider providing clearer signage or access for visitors. Overall, Dhauli Shanti Stupa is a must-visit for its tranquility and architectural beauty.

A serene escape into history and peace Visiting Dhauli Giri was a soul-soothing experience. The Shanti Stupa, perched atop the hill, radiates tranquility and offers a panoramic view of the Daya River below. Knowing this was the site of the historic Kalinga War, where Emperor Ashoka embraced Buddhism, adds a profound layer of meaning to the visit. The rock edicts of Ashoka are fascinating, and the Light & Sound Show in the evening beautifully narrates the transformation from war to peace. The surroundings are clean, well-maintained, and perfect for quiet reflection or photography. Highly recommended for history lovers, spiritual seekers, and anyone looking to escape the city buzz for a few hours. Don’t forget to catch the sunset—it’s magical from the hilltop.

The 36 Yogini Temple in Hirapur, located about 15 km from Bhubaneswar, is a unique and serene heritage site known for its circular, open-air structure and tantric significance. Built in the 9th century, the temple originally housed 64 Yogini idols, though only around 36 remain today, giving it its popular name. The intricate stone carvings, peaceful surroundings, and spiritual aura make it a fascinating spot for history enthusiasts and those seeking quiet reflection. Though not grand in size, the temple's distinct architecture and mystical charm leave a lasting impression. However, facilities around the site are minimal, so it’s best visited as part of a short, well-planned heritage outing.

This a small temple but very beautiful and free from over commercial nature of big temples of Bhubaneswar and Puri. And it's also unique temple and may have some importance for people believing in tantric powers. Garden and a pond is beutiful. A handicraft shop near to the temple on access road is also very nice, the offered rates for real handicraft is quite reasonable.

A mesmerizing historical gem just outside Bhubaneswar! The Chausath Yogini Temple in Hirapur is a rare 9th-century circular shrine, dedicated to 64 divine Yoginis—feminine energies of Tantra. Its open-air, roofless design instantly sets it apart from other temples, creating a serene, mystical atmosphere that’s perfect for quiet reflection and spiritual connection. The intricate stone carvings and powerful goddess statues, many still beautifully preserved, echo the temple’s profound heritage. You’ll notice each Yogini depicted in unique poses and expressions, symbolizing the diversity and strength of the feminine divine. The narrow, low entrance adds a sense of awe as you step into this sacred mandala. Although modest in size, the temple’s peaceful ambiance, artistry, and deeply rooted history make it a must-visit for anyone interested in Odisha’s unique cultural and spiritual legacy. The entire site is well-maintained, and its aura feels far removed from the noise of the city. Highly recommended for seekers of art, history, or tranquil places to meditate and feel inspired by ancient wisdom.

Yogini Temple in Hirapur, Odisha (also called the Mahamaya Temple), a rare and evocative example of hypaethral (open-air) tantric architecture from the 9th century CE. Situated about 20 km south of Bhubaneswar, this circular temple is one of only four surviving 64 yogini shrines in India Dedicated to the Cult of the Yoginis—64 powerful female deities associated with Goddess Durga/Mahamaya and tantric practices involving worship of the five elements (bhumandala) Found in the rural village of Hirapur, beyond Bhubaneswar—best reached by taxi or private car . • There’s no entry fee, and an ASI caretaker can act as a guide for a small fee (~₹50), often selling a booklet with detailed information . • Ideal visiting time: around 9 AM, after morning puja ceremonies and when guides are available. Avoid monsoon season (June–September) due to flooding risks near the nearby pond and river

Chousathi Yogini Temple at Hirapur, Odisha is known locally as Mahamaya Mandir. There are a lot of goddesses worshipped in this circular temple. During my time as an academic, I only encountered the female form of Ganesh at this temple. Two figures with necked mail resembling Niganta (necked monk) are present. The land is kept clean and in good condition. Visiting in the evening is preferable.

Ananta Vasudeva Temple, located on the eastern bank of Bindu Sarovar in Bhubaneswar, is a prominent 13th-century Hindu temple. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and features idols of Lord Krishna, Balarama, and Subhadra. The temple was built by Queen Chandrika of the Chodaganga dynasty and renovated by the Marathas in the late 17th century.
A spiritually enriching experience! Ananta Vasudeva Temple is one of the rare temples in Bhubaneswar dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The architecture is stunning, similar to the Lingaraj Temple, but with beautiful Vaishnavite carvings. The temple's traditional kitchen serves delicious Mahaprasad, cooked in earthen pots — a must-try! A peaceful and divine place that blends devotion, history, and culture perfectly.
Break C — Google review
Nestled amidst the cultural heartland of Odisha, this historic temple stands as a timeless testimony to the region’s rich architectural and spiritual heritage. Carved intricately from stone, the temple reflects the unmatched craftsmanship of ancient artisans. Every wall, pillar, and sculpture speaks a silent story from centuries past, showcasing depictions of gods, celestial beings, animals, and mythological scenes with breathtaking detail and symmetry. The temple’s towering spire reaches towards the sky, symbolizing a bridge between the earth and the divine. As sunlight falls upon its surfaces, the carvings come alive with shadows and light, creating a magical atmosphere that enchants every visitor. The structure is not just a place of worship, but also a remarkable example of engineering and design from an era where tools were limited but imagination was boundless. Surrounded by natural beauty and calmness, the temple complex often fills with the soft sounds of bells, chants, and the fragrance of incense. Pilgrims and tourists alike are drawn to its aura — seeking blessings, inner peace, or simply to witness the marvel of its existence. The spiritual energy around it is powerful, yet deeply comforting. Despite the passage of time, the temple remains well-preserved, echoing the glory of a bygone civilization that valued devotion, art, and architectural excellence. Whether one is religious or not, standing in the shadow of this grand monument stirs a deep respect for history and heritage. It is a living relic of faith, devotion, and timeless cultural pride.
Vicky P — Google review
The Ananta Basudeva Temple of Bhubaneswar stands as a rare symbol of Vaishnavite devotion within a city otherwise dominated by temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Erected in 1278 CE by Queen Chandrika Devi of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, the temple was envisioned as a sacred abode for Lord Krishna in his form as Ananta Basudeva, accompanied by his siblings Balarama and Subhadra. Its architecture closely resembles that of the grand Lingaraj Temple situated nearby, reflecting the classic Kalinga style with its towering spire, ornate carvings, and stone craftsmanship. Yet, while the Lingaraj Temple resonates with Shaivite chants, Ananta Basudeva echoes with the mellifluous hymns of Vishnu. One of the most distinctive aspects of the temple is its ancient kitchen tradition. Unlike most North Indian temples where offerings are symbolic, here food is cooked in large earthen pots over wood-fired stoves, much like the Mahaprasad of the Jagannath Temple in Puri. This sacred food, known as Abhada, is prepared not just by priests but often with the assistance of local women, turning worship into a communal act of devotion. The aroma of steaming rice and vegetables mingles with incense smoke, giving the temple a warmth that feels both spiritual and homely. Beyond its historical legacy, the temple is enveloped in fascinating folklore that deepens its mystique. Local legends claim that this very site marks the place where the mortal remains of Lord Krishna were cremated after his earthly departure, as narrated in certain vernacular retellings of the Mahabharata. This belief transforms the temple from a mere place of worship into a shrine of cosmic closure—a final chapter in the divine saga of Krishna. Another popular tale speaks of celestial serpents that once guarded the sanctum; it is said that when invaders tried to desecrate the temple, mysterious illnesses befell them, forcing them to retreat. Even today, devotees point to stone carvings of serpents as silent sentinels of that legend. The temple continues to be a vibrant center of culture and faith. During Janmashtami, the birth of Krishna is celebrated not only with rituals but with playful dramatizations drawn from both scripture and village imagination. Worshippers narrate stories of young Krishna stealing butter, teasing gopis, and dancing on the serpent Kaliya—all retold with laughter and reverence in equal measure. Thus, Ananta Basudeva Temple is not just a repository of history; it is a living tapestry where devotion mingles with myth, and stone meets soul.

🙏Har Har Mahadev 🙏 Jay Jagganath ji Jay Sri Lakshminarayan Vishnu. The temple was constructed in the thirteenth century, and the complete murtis of Krishna, Balarama and Subhadra are worshipped there. We visited Ananta Basudev Temple, located beside the sacred Bindu Sagar Lake in Bhubaneswar, to offer Śrāddha. The experience was deeply spiritual and peaceful. The temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Ananta Basudev), carries immense historical and religious significance — one of the few Vishnu temples in the Ekamra Kshetra surrounded mostly by Shiva shrines. The priests were very cooperative and guided us well through the Śrāddha rituals with devotion and care. The calm surroundings of Bindu Sagar, with the temple reflection on the water, create a serene atmosphere perfect for prayers and offerings to ancestors. Cleanliness around the temple and the disciplined arrangement by the pandas made the visit comfortable. If you are visiting Bhubaneswar for spiritual purposes, especially for Śrāddha or Pinda Dāna, this is one of the most auspicious and peaceful places to do it. Truly a divine and memorable experience.

The Pathani Samanta Planetarium offers an okay, but dated, experience, excelling with its immersive space shows and suitable for families and young children interested in astronomy, but suffering from uncomfortable and damaged seating, weak presentation, and partial operation of exhibits. Visitors should confirm show languages, as shows are available in Odia, Hindi, and English, and enjoy the astronomy park with a sundial in the campus. Mukteshwara Temple in Bhubaneswar is one of the most beautiful and artistically refined temples in Odisha, often called the **“Gem of Odisha architecture.”** Built around the 10th century, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is a masterpiece of the early Kalinga style. Though small in size compared to temples like Lingaraja, it stands out for its stunning carvings, elegant structure, and iconic **arched torana (gateway)**, which is considered one of the finest stone arches in Indian temple architecture. The temple walls are decorated with intricate sculptures of dancers, ascetics, animals, floral patterns, and mythological figures, reflecting both devotion and artistic excellence. The *Mukteshwara* name signifies “Lord of Freedom,” and the temple is believed to represent spiritual liberation. The peaceful surroundings, well-maintained premises, and minimal crowds make it a perfect place to sit quietly, admire ancient craftsmanship, and take photographs. The temple complex also includes a beautiful tank and smaller shrines, adding to its charm. Unlike many large temples, Mukteshwara feels intimate and serene, with no commercial rush or noise, making it ideal for heritage lovers, architecture students, and photographers. Entry is free, and the temple is open to all. It is also one of the main highlights of the famous **Mukteswar Dance Festival**, held every year in January, where classical Odissi performances take place in the temple courtyard under the open sky. Overall, Mukteshwara Temple is a must-visit for anyone exploring Bhubaneswar—not just for its religious value but for its artistic perfection, calm environment, and historical importance. It feels like a timeless stone poem carved with devotion and elegance.

Located in the heart of Bhubaneswar, the Mukteshwar Temple is one of the finest examples of ancient Odisha-style (Kalinga) temple architecture. Dating back to the 10th century, this small yet artistically rich temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva (Mukteshwar Mahadev). Though not very large, every inch of the temple is beautifully carved — from intricate floral patterns to scenes from mythology. The iconic arched torana (gateway) at the entrance is unique and unmatched in design among Indian temples, giving it the nickname “Gem of Odisha architecture.” The temple is peaceful and less crowded, making it ideal for quiet exploration, photography, or spiritual reflection. It’s also part of the famous “Ekamra Kshetra” — the old temple city area, and is located near other historical temples like Rajarani and Lingaraj.

A must visit to discover and understand the tribal culture in Odisha! The museum is air-conditioned and covers different facets of the lives of various local tribes - clothing, weapons, household objects, food, painting/art, etc. The staff were very knowledgeable and provided insights into all the artefacts. Then there are many types of huts - each constructed at scale. Inside each are various object that the people used. It was interesting find a motion based audio description system inside each hut which played a recorded description upon moving the palm over the sensor! There's ample car parking space and the restroom was clean.

This is a great place for anyone interested in tribal culture, offering a detailed glimpse into their way of life. Personally, I’m not very inclined towards tribal history and culture, so I didn’t find it as engaging — which is why I would rate it 3 stars. ISKCON Temple, Bhubaneswar — a peaceful place for devotion and reflection. It’s located near NH-16, which makes it easy to reach, but the constant noise of vehicles sometimes breaks the calm. If the temple were a little away from the road, it could offer even deeper peace. Still, it's a beautiful space to feel spiritually connected.

The ISKCON Temple in Bhubaneswar is a peaceful and spiritually uplifting place, perfect for anyone looking to experience devotion, calmness, and a serene atmosphere away from the city rush. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and Radha, and the architecture is simple yet elegant, with beautifully maintained gardens, clean surroundings, and a pleasant environment that instantly makes you feel relaxed. The chanting of “Hare Krishna” and the soft devotional music playing in the background adds to the divine ambience. The evening aarti is especially worth attending, as it brings a very positive and soulful energy to the entire place. The temple premises also have a Govinda’s restaurant where you can enjoy delicious pure vegetarian prasad and sattvik food, which is hygienic and very tasty. The staff and devotees are polite and welcoming, and the place is well-organised for visitors. Overall, ISKCON Bhubaneswar is not just a temple but an experience of peace, devotion, and spiritual simplicity, making it a must-visit spot for anyone visiting the city – whether you're religious or just looking for a calm and beautiful place to spend some time.

A very different kind of Kalinga temple , built in two levels to accomodate a very huge Lingam . A doorway in the lower level gives a view of the base , while the portal in the upper level allows darshan of the top . A flight of steps takes one to the upper level which has the koshta murtis or Parshva Devatas - Ganapathi , Karthikeya and Durga . The site is archeologically important because Mauryan age relics have been found here . There is a theory that the Lingam itself could be the stump of an Ashokan pillar . Premises is very well maintained and peaceful as not many visit this 12th century temple .

One of the best malls in Odisha and a must-visit if you are in Bhubaneswar. Esplanade One offers a modern shopping experience with a good mix of national and international brands like Lifestyle, H&M, Max, and Pantaloons. The ambience is clean and well-maintained, with good lighting and central air-conditioning. The food court is spacious, offering a variety of options — from Domino’s and KFC to local Odia cuisine. I especially liked the seating arrangements that give enough space for families and groups. There's also a PVR cinema on the top floor — great for weekend hangouts. Plus, they often have events or seasonal decorations, which makes the mall lively. What can be improved? The parking area gets crowded during weekends and holidays. Some local brand stores are missing. A few escalators sometimes don't work — minor inconvenience. Overall, a great place for shopping, food, movies, and chilling with friends or family. ASHOKAN ROCK EDICT is a significant historical site located in Udayagiri and Khandagiri, Odisha. It was established by King Ashoka after the battle of Kalinga and features inscriptions carved on a large rock. These inscriptions, written in an ancient language, have English translations available for visitors to understand the history behind them.
The Ashokan Rock edict at Dhauli is located very close to the Shanti Stupa and is an iconic piece of history dating to the 3rd century BC. Ashoka's edict are one of the greatest sources of information on life during the Mauryan period. There are two important structures here, one is the actual massive rock edict and the second is a rock carved elephant. The rock edict contains information about the laws that Ashoka implemented in Kalinga which he conquered post a bloody battle. The semi carved body of the elephant is supposed to represent Buddha. Do not miss this spot!

This edict is about 2,300 years ago. This was built by Magadha king Ashoka. This place is now so greenery and beautiful.

Ashokan Rock edict is a very very historical place near dhauli. There's rock where The great Ashoka inscribed in ancient text which is preserved by ASI. The whole place is maintained by ASI. Beautiful garden, a big banyan tree. A beautiful place to visit.

The Dhauli inscription was established by the great king Asoka in the 3rd century BC. In Odisha, the inscription can be found on Aswathama Hill close to Bhubaneswar. The king has prohibited killing animals in his royal kitchen. The authority of Odisha takes great care to preserve this place.
Prof. R — Google review
The place is of such high historical importance. But people don't visit there even after visiting Dhauli Hill-top. You must visit at least for five minutes. It's a gem to read those inscriptions and the translations there.
Pritam M — Google review
The first ever Ashokan Rock Edict is here in this place. It is carved on a rock panel in Pali and Prakruti languages. The panel is below an elephant head carved out of that rock in the top side. The people are using this as a picnic spot without realising the importance of the place. The translation of the edicts in vernacular Hindi and English is available in the place itself. These are mainly talking about non violence and protection of women. Fortunately the rock edicts are well preserved from vagaries of nature by a steel panel case. To approach the hill top steps are there and the place is well maintained. When we went it was raining and drizzling alternatively and hence the climate was too good to enjoy the beauty of this 2nd century AD masterpiece in tact.

This place has always had a place in my heart, with all the facilities and the way they have been handling sports have loved it. Over the year have visited this place numerous times with various teams for various matches and it's always a joy coming here. One of the best facilities for sports in india. Best hockey stadium of india . With great efforts of odisha government now our national game hockey is touching new heights main role is played by Kalinga stadium. Biju Patnaik swimming pool, Gopi Chand institute of badminton is also situated here. I m visiting here for more than 4 years for swimming competition which was hosted by Biju Patnaik swimming pool. Great facilities for professional swimmers it accompany physiotherapy room, ice bath, strem bath, 50m international standard swimming pool, warm up pool along with it, hostel for trainee swimmers and staff, world class gym, Abhinav bindra institute of excellence, lush green huge campus with parking. One more 50m pool is also here which is old one but in complete running condition. I deeply appreciate the facilities available here. Every state need to pay attention on such kind of world class of infrastructure . Icing on the cake is the Millet shop which provides healthy and tasty substitute of food for the athletes. Ragi dosa, idli, ragi laddu, Millet cakes, ragi mixture and so much more.5 Star from my side.

The swimming pool at Kalinga Stadium is a popular spot, and for good reason. The water in the big pool is well-maintained and clean, making for a pleasant swimming experience. The pool is not always crowded, especially if you go during the 9 PM slot. Typically, you can find 1-2 lanes relatively empty, offering a more relaxed swim. However, securing a slot requires some dedication. Due to high demand, you'll need to be ready to book precisely when the slots open. Bookings for the next month begin on the 21st of the previous month at 12 AM. You'll need to act fast, aiming to book within the first 1-2 minutes to ensure you get your desired time. If you miss this window, you'll have to wait until the next month. The good news is that once you've booked a slot initially, renewals are reportedly much easier.

Nestled in the heart of Bhubaneswar, Shree Baitala Temple, also known as Vaitala Deula, is a hidden gem that beautifully blends Oriya and South Indian architectural styles. This ancient temple, dating back to the 7th century, is dedicated to Goddess Chamundi—a unique tantric form of Goddess Durga. The temple's striking three spires symbolize the divine powers of Mahasaraswati, Mahalakshmi, and Mahakali.
Serene and divine.... Apart from it's historical importance and architectural marvel.... This place beholds a very strong positive vibe. However it's closed most of the time... Try to visit before 10 am if you want to have darshan..

Baitala Deula, located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, is an 8th-century temple dedicated to Goddess Chamunda (Shakti). It is renowned for its unique Khakara-style architecture, a variation of the Kalinga temple style, featuring a curved, rectangular tower (shikhara) resembling Buddhist chaityas. The temple’s intricate carvings depict Hindu deities, tantric symbols, and mythological figures. Inside, the three-headed Chamunda idol, seated on a corpse with symbolic elements, reflects tantric influences. Situated near Lingaraj Temple, it is easily accessible by road, taxis, and local transport. Baitala Deula stands as an important monument for its architectural, religious, and tantric significance in Odisha’s heritage.

A fascinating piece of Odisha’s ancient heritage, Baital Temple (locally known as Tinimundia Temple) is a hidden gem in Bhubaneswar. Its unique triple sanctum (three spires) architecture, which gives it the name "Tinimundia," stands out from other temples in the city. Dedicated to Goddess Chamunda, the temple is known for its tantric influences and rich carvings on stone. Though relatively less crowded, it carries immense historical and spiritual significance. The atmosphere is peaceful, and it’s a great place to witness the Kalinga style of temple architecture up close. Worth a visit for history buffs and spiritual seekers alike!

A small but beautiful temple located bang in the middle of a busy street in the city. It's based on a fusion of two architectural styles - Oriya & South Indian - and so looks somewhat different from the other temples in Bhubaneswar. Very few people visit this place because it's located quite off the usual tourist route but it's worth the detour.

She is the goddess chamunda. She is the goddess of guhya kali krama. She herself is guhyeswari(गुह्येश्वरी). The main difference between kali and maa chamunda is "she is that energy which comes from the heart of kali." Thats the main reason she termed as guhya(गुह्या). She is the White light that emerges from Maa Kalikaa . Thats why she also known as Swet Kali (श्वेतकाली) and related to full moon (पूर्णिमा). She is in every Dus mahavidyas, infact she is the heart of mahavidyas. She is the divine goddess of knowledge and related to panchami tithi. Like Nrusingha(नरसिंह) she is also termed as Nara-Devi(नरदेवी), the goddess is in human form and related to navami tithi. When she drank the blood of Rakt beej (रक्त बीज) demon, then the RBC(Red Blood Cell) in her body went down and only WBC(White Blood Cell) is left in her body thats the main reason she is very lean and thin, even her bones in her body can be seen easily. She is the goddess of war thats why she related to Chaturdashi tithi also. After drinking the blood of rakt beej then the wife of rakt beej cursed her that the charm in her face will fade. Thats the main reason the face of maa chamunda looks very fiery. Rakt beej also a great devotee of maa so maa chamunda held the rakt beej in scorpion form in the centre of her heart. Thats why in some Idol of maa chamunda you can clearly see a scorpio in the centre of her chest. She removes any vikara related to blood or planet mars as well as she removes any ill effects of saturn. She is a very motherly goddess. She is directly related to maa mahalaxmi infact maa lakshmi is one of her guardian deity of maa chamunda. The goddess of bhutas and dakinis is worshipped in this temple. She is daughter of odisha (कलिङ्गा तनया ). Thats why odisha is termed as chamunda pitha in shakt dharma. She sits upon mahapreta who is none other than our ancestors. So she is the goddess of our ancestors. By worshipping her any ancestral issue will be solved in no time. She is the goddess where both hanuman ji and bhairav ji serves her. Infact these are some details which i knew from my past experiences. You guys can visit this temple on specially tuesday and saturday as very sweet drink(prasad) is served on those days . Jai maa chamunda

Vaitala Deula temple is dedicated to Goddess Chamundi & is located in the Old Town of Bhubaneswar. It is also known as Tini-mundia deula due to the three spires on top of it, which is a very distinct feature of the temple. The three spires are believed to represent the three powers of the Goddess Mother, Chamunda - Mahasaraswati, Mahalakshmi and Mahakali. The presiding deity Chamunda sits on a corpse flanked by a jackal and an owl and is decorated with a garland of skulls. She holds a snake, bow, shield, sword, trident, thunderbolt and an arrow, and is piercing the neck of the demon. The temple is very easy to be missed. It's not as well known as the Lingaraj Temple or Parashurameshwara Temple or Mukteswara Temple. Also, almost adjoining the temple are residential houses. Perhaps, Archaeological Survey of India should strictly enforce it's laws & ensure ancient monuments are protected, & an important aspect to that is to secure the lands in the immediate vicinity of a monument & protecting it from encroachment. Along with other great temples in the Old Town, this temple also has to be promoted.

'Vaitala Deula or Tinimundia Mandira' one of the few existing 8th Century 'Khakhara' (Cylindrical Roof) Style of Temple Architecture is situated in Old Town, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. This 'Chamunda, Shakti or Charchika' Temple is a testimony to the influence of Dravidian Architecture from the South during the initial phase Kalingan Temple Architecture which later produced some of the finest monuments in the world like The Sun Temple (Konark), The Jagannath Temple, The Lingaraj Temple, Rajrani Temple, Mukteswar Temple & many more. However, more attention is required for the maintenance of the this rare gem.

I came to Bhubaneswar city for the first time and got the good fortune of visiting this temple on Tuesday, where the idol is huge and attractive and the aarti is so beautiful that it captivates the mind, the atmosphere is calm and beautiful and the path there is very easy The system is so good that there is even a path for riding two wheelers. There was also a provision for keeping shoes outside the temple, and along with it there were temples of many other Hindu gods and goddesses like Radha Krishna, Hanuman Ji, Shankar Ji, Ganesh Ji and many more. All these arrangements make Shri Ram Temple special.

Regional Science Centre Bhubaneswar, also known as Science Park, is a captivating destination for science enthusiasts of all ages. The center offers interactive displays and workshops aimed at promoting scientific awareness and education. Visitors can explore the various exhibits that aim to inspire curiosity and interest in science. Additionally, the park features a garden area where visitors can relax and enjoy the company of ducks. It's an ideal place to visit for families looking for educational yet entertaining experiences in Bhubaneswar.
The Regional Science Centre is beside the campus of Regional Institute of Education, Bhubaneswar and at a walking distance from Acharya Vihar square. I went here on a weekday in the month of March. The experience was good and I spent my day well here. I paid Rs 30 for visiting the park and additionally Rs 20 for visiting the dinosaur park at the counter, both of which are inside the campus of the Regional Science Centre. One can also buy tickets for the science shows, 3D shows for which the fare is separately billed however I didn't watch any show that day. The dinosaur park was opened till 5:30 PM. Talking about this place, there is a lot to explore and it will take a day long if one is interested to look at an instrument or a demonstration and read the description patientfully and completely, try to understand it and then move on to the next one. The thing that caught my attention was 'Motion gallery'. Everything was well managed inside the gallery, aptly described (which makes sense though), and the concepts of Physics (like types of motion, Newton's laws, concept of inertia, locomotion, projectile motion, conversion of motion, wave motion, etc.) alongwith some kind of fun to use instrument to elucidate the concept itself captivated me a lot. I was excited to try each and every working instrument although a few of these instruments didn't work well. There was an auditorium in the ground floor of the motion gallery which I didn't visit. I also enjoyed the science park a lot, clicked photographs, explored various interesting and common instruments installed everywhere. Particularly, I liked the musical tubes, sundial, simple camera, globe scultpture a lot. There was a kids park which kept a lot of kids engaged over there. Then, I went to the dinosaur park which was fun to explore and at the same time I got to know about the pre-historic sauropsids present on our earth. It was a mesmerising experience as it had both visual and audio descriptions about each individual species of dinosaurs and other animals. As one moves from one species to another, one can actually listen to the description of that particular species instead of just going through the description boards installed infront of the statues. Though small, the place was maintained very well! So to wrap up, the regional science centre is worth visiting and would serve as a good place for adults (it's like revisiting the school science textbooks once again but in a completely different format) and the best place for young minds (for learning more and more through interesting demonstrations and working instruments). Dinosaur park is the best place for kids and naturalists to explore.

The Regional Science Centre, Bhubaneswar offers a fun and educational experience for all ages. Interactive exhibits across diverse scientific fields, from motion to mathematics, make learning engaging. The planetarium and science park provide additional attractions. While some exhibits might need updating, the center remains a valuable resource for sparking scientific curiosity, especially among students. The centre regularly hosts science demonstrations and workshops, making it an engaging place for students and enthusiasts. The well-maintained premises and friendly staff enhance the overall experience. It’s a great destination for families, students, and anyone curious about science.

The temple is situated at the heart of Bhubaneswar, Odisha. It is nearly 1 km from railway station and 10km from ISBT Bus station,Beramunda, Bhubaneswar. There are plenty number of govt. Town buses are available through that route. You can choose auto rickshaw as well. Ola and Uber are also available. But, I'll suggest its better to go by town bus. Its very cheap and better ride.

The Megheshwara Temple, a small and ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, possesses remarkable architecture and holds great historical significance. However, one aspect that requires attention is the neglected Koneru or lake within the temple premises which is currently overgrown with grass and filled with garbage. It is hoped that the Odisha government will prioritize its cleaning and maintenance. The city of Bhubaneswar is renowned for its numerous temples, including this one, which are greatly admired by visitors.
Beautiful temple. Suggested to not visit during peak sunlight time as the surrounding stone floor around the temple gets extremely hot. Has a certain charm among all the temples of Bhubaneswar. Do make sure to check out my IG-atul_something, I've visited every ancient temple in Bhubaneswar & made sort of a catalogue for people to discover.

Megheshwar mandir is dedicated to lord Shiva. Its a bit far from the city, near to Bramheshwar temple. It has a walled compound with big premises. It also has a big pond next to it. Thogh there is some maintenance work being done in the temple, it needs a bit more care. If you are at Bramheshwar temple, give it a quick visit.
Divyesh W — Google review
It's one of the oldest Siva Temples in Bhubaneswar dated to be around the 12th Century. The temple is very well preserved and maintained. There is a small garden in the premises. There is also a pond at the backside of the temple which has not been taken care of at all. Easy to locate, though parking can be troublesome as you have to park on the road.

The Megheswar Temple, located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, is a 12th-century temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built in the Kalinga-style architecture, it features a rekha deula (tower) with intricate carvings of deities, apsaras, and mythological scenes. The temple is known for its beautifully sculpted lingam and yoni pitha, symbolizing divine energy. It is believed to have been built by a noblewoman named Mahalaxmi during the Ganga dynasty rule. The temple’s peaceful ambiance makes it a significant spiritual site. Easily accessible from Bhubaneswar city center, visitors can reach it via taxis, auto-rickshaws, and local buses.

Sri Megheswara Deva Temple , 12th Century Built, Ganga Period TankaPani Road , Bhubaneswar-Old Town, Odisha Not very far from the Previous Temple , another Resplendent Heritage Architecture belonging the Ganga Period. The mention of this place is found two slabs of dark stone which are on the western wall of Sri Ananta Vasudeva Temple , Bhubaneswar and a brief history in 26 lines. The foundation of this magnificent temple of Lord Shiva (Meghgeswara - Lord of the Clouds) by Sri Svapnesvara - a close connect and a very Powerful General of the Eastern Ganga King Shri Anangabhima Deva -1 . He ascended the throne in 1192 A.D towards the end of 12th Century. In the lines of the verses 22-32 - He mentions about the foundation of this temple , provided a number of female attendants to the God, laid out a beautiful garden, built a tank near it with a mandapa or an open hall. He provided wells and tanks on the roads in the town, cloisters for study of vedas, and to the pious brahmans he gave a brahmapura which was superitended by a Saiva teacher Vishnu . He consecrated this temple . The timing could not have more auspicious for me , to visit Lord Megheswara with the the backdrop of Cloud cover with sun playing hide and seek. The ASI Horticulture Dept has done a splendid job of recovering the surrounding and laying out the Garden . This represents one of the finest structures built during the Ganga period on a Navaratha Plan. The carving of Lord Kartikeya Stands out among the other ones. The entrance to the temple through the Jagamohana is guarded by the Nagas. Similar to ones found in the neighbourhood temples. Sri Nandi keeps waiting and guarding the lord . The Courtyard continues to be active with devotees , essentially this is live and functional temple.
