Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Kaunas Castle is a medieval fortress that offers art and historical exhibitions, cultural events, and guided tours. The castle hosts outdoor exhibitions of various works by international artists and showcases photography galleries. Visitors can also take walking city tours to explore the center and Old Town of Kaunas, including historical and architectural monuments like St. George's Church, the Theological seminary courtyard, Town Hall Square, baroque churches, and more.
It’s worthy to see this castle - after all, it is a symbol of the city! Inside there is a museum - price is low (for student 2€), but exhibits are not interesting. There is a view of the city from there - the free one is better, but remember that in Kaunas you can find better places for this, for example the Alexota funicular.
Alicja W — Google review
Kaunas Castle is a wonderful place for a walk. In the evening it’s beautifully lit, which makes the atmosphere really charming. The whole area felt very safe, and I also noticed there are surveillance cameras nearby, which adds to the feeling of security. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Kaunas!
Mihály J — Google review
A historic castle very nicely preserved, clean and surrounded by green areas and walking trails around it. Minutes away from the old town of Kaunas. Worth visiting!
Mark B — Google review
Kaunas Castle is a beautiful and historic spot right in the heart of the city. The red-brick fortress looks amazing, and the museum inside gives a nice glimpse into Kaunas’ past. The area around it is great for a walk, with lovely river views and a calm atmosphere. Staff are friendly, and there are often cool events or festivals happening nearby. Definitely worth a visit!
Jack F — Google review
A very nice castle, but quite small once you get inside and with status you need to be careful as they are quite steep and you will need to wait for people or to go upstairs or downstairs as you can do both at the same time as it’s quite narrow. Worth a visit tho. The prices for tickets is ok too £4 for adult, but for students, kids, retired and disabled people gets it’s cheaper or does not pay at all which is nice.
Indy R — Google review
Nice little exposition, well restored old castle, loved the dungeon prison part, great view from top level of the tower.Small but interesting museum, stairs at the tower are steep and narrow but there is another wider exilt on level two.Would recommend to spend couple hours exploring castle and surrounding old wall grounds.
Waffenman67 — Google review
Nice park to walk around. You can walk up to have a view. Castle itself has few remains, so not that much to visit. Has a museum indoor in the tower (paid entrance)
Koen K — Google review
It's one of the oldest buildings in Kaunas. Nice to relax and look around. I wouldn't suggest getting tickets.

Kaunas Town Hall, a stately 16th-century building located in the heart of the old town, is currently undergoing renovation. Despite this, visitors can still enjoy exploring the historic center and its landmarks. The surrounding area offers attractions such as Confluence Park (Santakos parkas), Kaunas Castle, and various museums. The charming cobbled streets are lined with cafes, restaurants, and bars to discover. The old town also features small local museums and churches to explore.
Very interesting museum, including whole history of Kaunas, from middle ages, through Communism to twenty first century. Highly recommended for all tourists visiting Kaunas :3

Kaunas Town Hall is a must-visit if you’re exploring Lithuania’s second-largest city! Known as the “White Swan” for its elegant architecture, this historic building sits in the heart of Kaunas Old Town. It has served many purposes over the centuries—city hall, prison, and even a wedding venue! Today, it houses the Kaunas City Museum, where you can learn about the city’s rich history. Take a stroll around the charming square, grab a coffee at a nearby café, and soak in the atmosphere of this beautiful and lively spot!

The Kaunas Town Hall is a beautiful and impressive building – a real highlight in the heart of the Old Town. The architecture is elegant, and the surrounding square is full of charm and history. It’s a great spot for photos and a nice place to sit and take in the atmosphere. Unfortunately, during our visit, the building was under renovation, so we couldn’t fully enjoy or explore it. It’s understandable that maintenance is necessary, but it was a bit disappointing not to see it in its full glory. Still, it’s a lovely landmark and definitely worth stopping by if you’re in Kaunas – hopefully next time without scaffolding!

10 euros, theres an app and i just cant make it work, not a whole lot, you can climb up the tower and take picture through windows ... Ac was nice.

The Devils' Museum, also known as Zmuidzinavicius Museum, is a unique and offbeat attraction in Kaunas, Lithuania. It houses a remarkable collection of over 3,000 devil sculptures and carvings from various parts of the world. The museum was initially started by artist Antanas Zmuidzinavicius and has since grown to become a memorial museum dedicated to showcasing these intriguing artworks.
Interesting and fascinating museum, but it's not for everyone. You can rush through it within half an hour, if you just watch the displayed scultures. However, if you take your time to read every tale and interesting detail that are written there you can learn a lot, and I hardly recommend to do it
Tamás M — Google review
If you're into folklore, this is a wonderful place. Lithuanian devils are more like trolls or goblins than the typical judeo-Christian enemy. There's so much fun in here, with lots of stories and historical context provided. You'll learn about witches and cows and blacksmiths too.
Ahimsa K — Google review
A visit to Kaunas isn't complete without an hour spent at the Velnio Muziejus 😈. As the only museum of its kind globally, its very existence speaks to its authenticity and unique cultural significance. The collection, which began with Lithuanian artist Antanas Žmuidzinavičius and has grown to over 3,000 pieces through international donations, is truly global. On its three floors, you'll see how different cultures interpret the devil—from mischievous Lithuanian folk carvings to intricate masks and sculptures from countries like India, Mexico, and Japan. This diversity provides a fascinating, multifaceted look at the mythological creature worldwide. Beyond the static exhibits, the museum incorporates unique art expositions, featuring both contemporary fine and applied arts. These often include creative video shows and modern interpretations that bring a fresh, artistic perspective to the ancient themes. The museum is small enough that you can easily navigate the entire collection in an hour or so, making it a perfect, wonderfully bizarre, and insightful stop if you're in the area. It’s a great piece of Lithuanian eccentricity!
Kestas G — Google review
Great place to see. The devil's museum depicts a lot of Lithuanian follow about devils and depicts the life of Antanas Zmuidzinavicius. His garden and there bottom floor had private collection at pieces. It would be nice if the type would tell you too go from the second floor devils to the third floor devils, then to the second floor apartment. Another great addition would be that the listening app would have different playback speeds.
Sjoerd — Google review
Really interesting one. If you have extra time it’s worth to see. There’s nothing much traditional or historical in that exhibition. However if you have time and got bored in Kaunas :) you can spend your time here.
Erkin Y — Google review
An excellent museum, really unusual. The exhibits were well laid out and each exhibition case was well documented in Lithuanian and English Some great information and interesting mythology from around the world. Took us a couple of hours to see everything but we do read every word! Would recommend a visit. Note: We read a review that said start from the top floor and work down. iMHO - disregard this and work your way up!! Good value for money, nice staff, clean toilets. Definitely qoryh a visit when in Kaunas.
Elaine C — Google review
Not what I was expecting at all. A spell binding experience of beautiful sculptures, fascinating stories and traditions. A must visit if in Kaunas.
Michael L — Google review
Very interesting museum! It was a private collection from a Lithuanian important person, whom was also a painter. I paid 8€ (full price) and I found it very fair, there are 3 floors of masks and different itens related and also another rooms with paintings and "rooms displays" with furniture's that belonged to him. I don't remember seeing any elevator so I am not sure if it is accessible, I would recommend giving them a call before. The navigation was easy with a lot of signals/plates with details and descriptions. I spent around 1h20 to see everything in a slow pace, stopping for 1-2 minutes in some spots and just walking by in others. This museum is just across the street from Kaunas Museum which is also worth the visit.

The M.K. Čiurlionis Museum of Art in Kaunas, Lithuania is a prominent cultural institution dedicated to the life and works of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, a renowned Lithuanian composer and artist. The museum boasts an extensive collection of his paintings, musical compositions, and personal belongings, providing visitors with a comprehensive insight into his creative brilliance.
Beautiful museum. We felt an immediate immersion into Lithuanian culture. We had a guided tour with a translator. Milita translated for our group and she was wonderful. We highly recommend the VR Movie. Great experience! Thanks for the unique tour!
Nathan M — Google review
The person at the reception seemed to begrudgingly sell me a ticket. I didn't realise there would be no context on Čiurlionis without buying the audio guide. It's mostly a shame because he is little known outside of Lithuania. The presentation of information throughout the museum is exceptionally variable in general. There was supposedly a new exhibition but it appeared to be closed. It would be useful to have a guided route through the museum to avoid missing things.
Edwin W — Google review
Had a fantastic time at the art museum. M.K. Čiurlionis is the most renowned artist in Lithuania, and there’s even a street named after him in Vilnius. Everyone should see his artwork while visiting the country. Although the layout of the museum isn't completely straightforward, it's manageable. About two hours is enough time to see everything.
Howie — Google review
I really liked the museum. I went on the last Sunday of the month (museums in Lithuania are free them) and I definitely recommend coming early right when they open. I came slightly after 10 and when I was leaving around 11:30, the place was really filling up. It is a very interesting and engaging museum. The artist is quite fascinating as he had many talents. It is also great for families and kids since it has a little play corner and some fun activities. I also bought some beautiful postcards in the gift shop to send to my grandparents.
Kristýna D — Google review
Very nice museum with more then one exhibitions. There was one about Lithuan history, another one related to stars, galaxy and planets, another one related to the ocean. It was a very good visit and I totally recommend it. I paid 10€ (full price) and I found it very fair. The navigation can be a little confusing as there are many rooms and walls with exhibitions but is not like a maze. I spent around 2h to see it all, at a medium pace, stopping for 1-2 minutes in some spots and just walking by in others. I don't remember seeing elevators so I am not sure if it is accessible, I would give a call before, if you need it.
João M — Google review
I'm new to Lithuania, so Ciurlionis is unknown to me. I can't believe he did so much in so short a time. A lot of his works look like they could be 70s SF novel covers or heavy metal album covers, and to me that's the highest compliment.
Ahimsa K — Google review
A must-see museum of art named after a famous and prolific painter, writer, composer Čiurlionis, who spoke Polish all his life and fell in love with a young girl, Sofija. In the souvenir shop you can get two books of Čiurlionis letters in original Polish with a translation into Lithuanian and lots of additional information on life and people of his time, poets, painters, writers and other artists, and family members, Warsaw, Petersburg, Palanga, Vilnius, but most of all, about his beloved Sofija.
Piotr W — Google review
If you had only time to visit one museum when in Kaunas, then I would say it the National art museum. The building is a treasure itself. From Liberty Avenue is is just a very short walk away. The access is easy and checking both opening times and changing exhibitions before a visit is recommendable. Admission is 10euros. Enjoy!

Pažaislis Monastery and Church, constructed in 1664 by Camaldolese monks, is a stunning example of late baroque architecture in North-Eastern Europe. The monastery complex has been an integral part of Kaunas' history for over 350 years and is now a popular destination for cultural and film tourism. Visitors can enjoy guided tours of the monastery, which also offers a hospitality complex for those who wish to extend their stay.
What a beautiful place! There’s plenty of parking spots available and the grounds around the monastery are wonderfully magical! The monastery itself is also lovely, although it was not open for visitors today as there was mass service going on. There’s also a Michelin restaurant here, that we didn’t try, but it sure is located in an amazing setting! Definitely worth a visit and try to explore the surrounding region as well 🥰
André M — Google review
On the outskirts of Kaunas, on a peninsula in the Kaunas Reservoir, stands the Pažaislis Monastery. The monastery and church were built between 1667 and 1712 by Camaldolese monks on the orders of Krzysztof Zygmunt Pac, Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The complex is the largest monastery in Lithuania and the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary with its 54-metre-high dome is one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in the country. The monastery was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church by Tsar Nicholas I after the Polish-Lithuanian Uprising of 1831. After three years of vacancy, the monastery came into the hands of the Sisters of St. Casimir in 1920, and the Catholic tradition was revived. Until the sisters were expelled by the communists in 1948 and the monastery was used for various purposes. In 1992 the monastery was returned to the sisters, who now manage the monastery and restore it to its former glory. In the church there is a statue of the Virgin Mary and Child that is considered miraculous. It was a gift from Pope Alexander VII to Krzysztof Pac, who donated the statue to the monastery to increase its appeal. The statue still attracts pilgrims and every year on 2 July a solemn procession with the statue of the Virgin Mary takes place. The monastery and church are quite far from the centre, but are easily accessible by bus (or car), so visit it!

In the heart of Kaunas Old Town, the House of Perkūnas stands as a striking 15th-century red-brick Hanseatic merchant's house. This historic building is open for tours, art exhibitions, and concerts. As you wander through the cobbled streets of the Old Town, you'll encounter this ornamental red brick facade that distinguishes itself along the riverfront.
Unfortunately, this museum is opened only once a week and this situation doesn’t enable much people to see it inside - including me. As a Pole, I am pleased with the subject matter and the commemoration of Mickiewicz. Outside the house looks incredible, great example of gothic architecture. The details are impressive. Tip - there are nearby murals dedicated to our poet. There is even a box in which Pan Tadeusz is hidden. It moves you deeply!
Alicja W — Google review
A bit mystical building in Kaunas) You're strolling through the Old Town and suddenly notice this house. It amazes with a strange gothic architecture and its rich history. This building was built as merchant's office. Then it eas sold to Jesuits and was used as a chapel and school. You can get inside now and take a look at this building but it could be closed temporarily. Anyway, it's a must-see attraction in Kaunas)
Iryna P — Google review
One of the few surviving Gothic-style houses. Only this time I noticed similar decorative elements to those on St. Anne's Church in Vilnius. You could call this house's style "Flamboyant Gothic." It's eye-catching and captivating. A very beautiful house.
Olga A — Google review
The House of Perkūnas is a beautiful and historically significant building in the heart of Kaunas. Its Gothic architecture stands out and adds character to the Old Town. It’s definitely worth a quick visit if you’re exploring the area. While the facade is impressive and well-preserved, the overall experience didn’t quite have a “wow” effect. It’s more of a visual landmark than a place to spend a lot of time, unless you’re deeply interested in local history or architecture. Still, a charming and elegant stop on any Kaunas walking tour!
Maximilian M — Google review
Magnificent building. It is a must see during visit in Kaunas. Just take few steps from central market and you travel in time to medieval times. Whole facade is very astonishing with it's intricate decorations. Maybe the surroundings isn't medieval at all, the house defends itself.

Unfortunately the visit to the house is possible only with appointment during summer. The external design is really interesting as it is has a lot of details which differentiate it from other gothic buildings with red bricks in Kaunas.

The Church of Vytautas the Great, a stunning example of 14th-century architecture, is one of the highlights in Kaunas' Old Town. This impressive red-brick structure stands proudly among other historical landmarks like St. George's Church and Kaunas Castle, which are nestled at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers.
And next to Perkūno Namas is another fairly well-preserved Gothic building – the Church of Vytautas the Great. I don't remember any other churches that don't bear the name of a saint. It's a very beautiful building and fits perfectly into its surroundings. But we've never been inside. It's always closed during our visits to Kaunas.
Olga A — Google review
One of the oldest brick churches in Kaunas and a good example of Lithuanian Gothic) Its full name is Vytautas'the Great Church of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary. It was built on the bank of the river Neman around 1400. You can find this temple in the Old Town, not far from Perkunas' house. The church looks better outside than inside because of a modest interior decoration. The church is bright and even cute. You feel tranquility here. My recommendation)
Iryna P — Google review

What a wonderful mass the coir was outstanding the preaching was next level. I enjoyed the mass during my weekend trip to Lithuania. If I have to say about the architecture it was so perfectly carved and well maintained. Sunday morning mass the church was almost all mix of young and elderly what a great community. There were sovereign gifts too.

Kaunas Cathedral is a stunning mix of Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance styles, making it one of Lithuania’s most impressive churches. It’s perfect for a peaceful visit—just be mindful of church services. The main altar and side chapels are beautiful, and it’s worth exploring the nearby Old Town afterward. This church has retained its solemn Gothic appearance from the outside. Decorative elements from later periods are quite well integrated inside. The paintings were painted by the Italian Andriolli. He came to the city with Napoleon's army. It seems like a love story and he stayed in Kaunas. I'm not sure if all the pictures are his. You can check it yourself. And during services, listen to the powerful organ.

Very beautiful church that doesn’t ask for any payment to enter. We happily donated 2euros. Please don’t light candles on the seats. The old staff has hard time removing hardened candle :(

We are blessed to be able to attend the Sunday mass in the cathedral. It is a beautiful church with so much history in it. Admiring the paintings of the blessed Mother of God, St. Joseph with child Jesus and other saints for Catholics like my husband and I was a privileged.

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Kaunas is a 19th-century Neo-Byzantine style church that was originally built for the Russian Orthodox Garrison. It features an underground museum designed for the blind, offering a unique experience focusing on sensory perception. The church has a rich history, having been closed and later purchased by the Roman Catholic Church.
The Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Kaunas is a beautiful example of Neo-Byzantine architecture. It’s a peaceful place to visit with stunning mosaics and intricate details inside. Take your time to admire the artwork, and don’t miss the impressive dome! It’s also near the city center, so it’s easy to combine with a stroll through Kaunas Old Town. Be sure to check if there are any concerts or events happening, as the acoustics in the church are amazing!
Hsyn S — Google review
I had not an opportunity to visit it inside, but outside this church is unique and extremely beautiful. This style stands out from the city’s architecture.
Alicja W — Google review
The outside is a lot more impressive than the inside. More than the Greek orthodox or Russian orthodox some more clean and simple lines. Definitely worth checking out
Greg A — Google review
This is a beautiful church that I “stumbled upon”. From the outside it is really mesmerizing, the inside is more humble but also worth visiting. There are stunning paintings on the walls and also a beautifully painted cupola. I went in on a Sunday and was lucky because there was a free orchestra concert! 🎶 🖼️

We have been to Kaunas 5 times in 10 years, but the church is always closed. You should probably come on church holidays. Externally it looks beautiful, fits well into the landscape and architecture. Oh, we finally got inside this church.

The Neo-Byzanthine Archangel Michael church is an eyecatcher on Liberty Avenue. Looking onto a map of Centras it plays an essential architectoral highlight. with its horizon dominating dome. It feels like a smaller version of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia (Bulgaria). Very picturesque. Not to miss when in Kaunas!

The Historical Presidential Palace in Kaunas is a significant landmark that offers a glimpse into Lithuania's rich past. Once serving as the official residence for presidents from 1919 to 1940, this building played a crucial role during a pivotal time in Lithuanian history when Kaunas was the temporary capital. Today, it stands as a museum dedicated to preserving local heritage through engaging exhibits and an inviting sculpture garden.
This is an interesting place with cool history behind it. This place was an old president resting place. It shows past president, their history, old paintings and things from the age the presidents were living, and much more. There was a fun way to remember Lithuanian anthem: there was small wooden things you have to put in the right places to solve the anthem riddle. There also was cool games to play about past Lithuanian presidents. I liked this museum.

A lovely square that serves as a link to the period between 1919 and 1939, when the city was the temporary capital of Lithuania.

Wonderful history in this building, very interesting. The museum curators are lovely and well-informed. The written information could be presented more clearly, it's hard to understand the order.

A calling card of Kaunas) This museum may seem to be dull but it is quite good for visual learners. There are many exhibition stands with textual information and photographs. You can find some interesting facts or see unique everyday items owned by politicians and other famous Lithuanians. I definitely recommend to visit Presidential Palace if you're fond of Lithuania's history.

The Vytautas the Great War Museum in Kaunas, Lithuania is a constantly updated military museum that offers a comprehensive look at Lithuanian and global military history. The exhibitions feature historical armor, weaponry collections, and personal belongings of important military figures like Silvestras Zukauskas. One of its notable displays is the wreckage of the Lituanica, a famous airplane that attempted to cross the Atlantic in 1933.
A fantastic museum full of exhibits and information. It is well laid out over three floors and nearly all exhibits have English translations available.
Baking B — Google review
A pretty good collection of historical relics. The tickets and also the souvenirs are cheap and worth their prices. However, the name of the museum is misleading. It technically displays tools, weapons, vehicles and uniforms from several period of history, and the Great War section is only just one part of it. Other than this, I really recommend to visit this museum, if you are in Kaunas
Tamás M — Google review

Jack S — Google review
Very affordable, only €5 for entry Broad range of weapons from various historical eras
Mark J — Google review
Was a little bit disappointed with this museum. We were hoping that our visit would provide more clarity on Lithuania's recent history. Whilst the museum is well laid out and the exhibits are well presented and labelled, the way the information is presented for each hall is not easy to digest! (Or read for people of a certain age). Presenting the key facts in a different format might help foreign visitors to get a better understanding of the Lithuania's complex history. The museum is worth a visit but with a little more thought it could be so much better. Don't miss the crashed plane!!
Elaine C — Google review
Very good exposition! Highly recommend to all weapons lovers.
Ecu L — Google review
The museum has several halls with exhibitions: history of Lithuania; weapons, ruling dynasties, sad pages (the wreckage of the Lituanica plane, deportations). Nearby in the park there are sculptures: the Statue of Liberty with an interesting history; Eternal flame near a hill of stones from battlefields; behind this are carved Lithuanian crosses; bookseller; mother and daughter at work, “with a secret” - a peasant sows rye. On the other side of the building is the Museum of the artist and composer M.K. Cherlenis.

I registered for a simulator on 14:00 when I was near their door I called them letting them know that I'm here the staff said "ill call the guy who needs to let in simulator" and we waited 20min and nothing. Kaunas State Musical Theater is a historic attraction located in downtown Kaunas, Lithuania. It is housed in the city theater building, which was constructed at the end of the 19th century. The theater showcases musical performances directed by talented professionals from Lithuania and other European countries. Each season, it presents at least two premieres to delight its audience. Visitors can expect top-notch acoustics and a warm, well-lit atmosphere that adds to the overall experience.
We were visiting Kaunas and went to go see Jekyll and Hyde. We don’t speak Lithuanian but the production was as good as you’d get on the West End in London. Terrific performance. The theatre is nice. Seats are comfy. We were in a small box. At intermission you can get a very delicious small hot chocolate which I highly recommend.

Interesting place and exhibition with authentic pieces, nice and helpful staff. You can find most of the information also in German and English there.

A relatively small, but very interesting museum, in an old building that perfectly adds to the atmosphere of the exhibition. Here you can see old medical and dental instruments and tools, as well as pharmacology equipment, from the ancient times of Lithuania up until the 20th century. However, be aware that some human remains (like skulls) are also presented among the exhibits. I think this is necessary in a scientific museum of this kind, but I'm writing it just in case some people are sensitive or may find it offensive, for whatever reason. The staff was very friendly, they guided me through the various rooms, and explained what to expect to see in each one of them. Each room is equipped with a catalogue of exhibits, available in various languages. The ticket price at the moment of writing (July 2024) is €2.00, which I think is great value for money. Be aware, though, that one can pay only in cash. There is also a short brochure available both in Lithuanian and English, for free. It's sad, though, that there is no museum catalogue/ book available. That's something I'd liked to see in a future visit :)
Michail D — Google review

The cost is also ridiculously low. Just 1€ for students and 2€ for adults. During the visit I was constantly narrated about history of medice and pharmycy which was much more interesting, than just reading information tables. Also even thought I am not pharmasist or doctor the museum managed to really engage me with lots of bizarre facts and stories. Truly big thanks for the dedicated staff. The 4th Fort of the Kaunas Fortress is a must-visit in the Kaunas district, offering a rich historical experience. It's recommended to explore this area with a guide who can provide valuable insights into its military history. The fort boasts well-preserved interiors, although some areas are graffitied. While the exterior history sign is excellent, internal signage is only in Lithuanian, making it challenging for non-speakers.
Probably one of the better forts in the system. Plenty to explore and there’s always something more to see through the next door or over the next rise. Interiors are well preserved if graffitied. The history sign outside was excellent but all the signage inside the fort is only in Lithuanian. Normally this isn’t a big deal, but the technical fortification jargon is a real challenge for Google translate.

The 4th Fort of the Kaunas Fortress is a fascinating place to explore, especially if you enjoy history and architecture. The old fortifications and tunnels give a real sense of the past, and the area is surrounded by peaceful nature. Some parts are in ruins and not fully restored, but that adds to the mysterious charm. Information signs could be more detailed, yet it’s still a great spot for a quiet walk or photography. Definitely worth a visit for history enthusiasts!

It's a nice place to visit and take a walk around. Since this is a historical place, I believe it would be best to visit it with a guide, to learn more and walk around better. When I visited this place, the grass wasn't that well cut, but I'm sure that was only due to the rain before hand that made the grass taller so beware of ticks! If you’re visiting, take a moment to admire its elegant façade and peaceful interior. I went into the school cantine during looking for it. At the end I found security guard who told me that I can take pictures from the outside.

I did not visit the church itself, however I think that the outside is beautiful and gives the oldtown of Kaunas a pleasent view.

Great that they have English service at 6:30 pm on Sunday. Very nice, welcome community in a beautiful church. If you have a chance to get to the top patio the view of old town is incredible!

Catholic church
The Little Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Kaunas is a majestic white stone building standing at 70 meters tall, with a capacity for up to 5000 people. Originally built as a temporary place of worship, it became the main church in its area for over 50 years due to Soviet confiscation. Despite its smaller size, it offers a cozy and sacred atmosphere for prayer and reflection.
Devoted to assisting the elderly in the Kaunas community

(Translated by Google) The "Little" Resurrection Church was erected in the 20s of the 20th century for a temporary service for believers in the Žaliakalnis (Green Hill) until the proper Resurrection Basilica will be built. However, the Soviets confiscated the major church, so this church was the main one in this part of Žaliakalnis for more than 50 years. As a guide I recommend to note the fine glass created by Stasys Ušinskas who studied in Paris // The so-called "small" Church of the Resurrection was created in the 20th century. At the beginning of the 1930s, when the population of this part of Žaliakalnis increased significantly. As a guide, I know that the great Basilica of the Resurrection, designed by Karol Reisson or someone else, was waiting to be built. After 1933 after the reconstruction, the church became oriented in the east-west direction, acquired the volume of a triple basilica, the main western facade of which is finished with a tower. The compact wooden sanctuary is walled from the outside with so-called Prussian masonry. Unfortunately, the Soviets nationalized the unfinished "big" church, and the small church became the main one for the entire parish. More than one famous priest worked here, St. During Easter, even a bagpipe orchestra accompanied the procession. The church is distinguished by the religious-themed works of Stasios Ušinskas, a stained glass master who studied in Paris. (Translated by Google) This is a cozy and sacred church, I would recommend everyone to stop and express their thanks, prayers... because in this parish there are two Basilicas of the Resurrection of the Church and the so-called small Church of the Resurrection of Christ, some need space or pomp, others need closeness and comfort in prayer with God... Both. .. prayer expressed in the community through SV. Mass liberates and unites with God... So it is nice to pray and be... in an orderly parish.

The 9th Fort of the Kaunas Fortress, originally built by the Russian Tsar in the 1800s, has a haunting history as a Nazi execution site during World War II. It now stands as a museum and memorial to the 50,000 Lithuanians and Jews who lost their lives there. The massive monument erected on the site serves as a solemn reminder of this tragic past.
Definitely worth a visit. Monemument and information regarding mass killings is sobering but presented respectfully. Information inside the exhibit is thorough and well worth while spending the time to read. Available in both Lithuanian and English.

We took a bus from Kaunas Centre here it was €1 and took about 30 minutes. As you arive there is a coffee machine at the carpark (there is no cafe or shop to get food here) it is a short pavedcwalk up to the main museum €8 Euros to go in to the Museum was well work it. There is so much to see inside. Well thought out displays and installations. Was history and so.e very thought provoking displays. Everything is displayed in Lithuanian and English. You can walk around the outside area for free. 100% recommended this for a visit 2-3 hrs would do it justice to see Everything!

Beautiful place marked by history. The fort has a very interesting museum and the exterior, including the monument, is a sacred place. I recommend going in the spring season to see all the vegetation in bloom, seemingly in contrast with the history written here.

If you want to understand something of the history of the region in the 20th century, this fortress gives a good overview. I had no idea that the Lithuanians continued to resist the Soviet occupation well into the 1950s. If you go by bus, remember to press the stop button before you reach the stop. I didn't and ended up a mile or two in the wrong direction.

The cozy cellar-like atmosphere adds to the charm of this popular spot. Visitors can indulge in dishes like beer soup, cheese doughnuts, and smoked shanks while savoring unique culinary creations. The menu offers a variety of hearty Lithuanian and European dishes that pair perfectly with their selection of homemade beers.
Great aesthetic inside - like dining in a posh cave bar. We only stayed for a drink and the dark beer was excellent. The price is quite expensive.

Church
Nestled in the heart of Kaunas, Christ's Resurrection Church stands as a stunning testament to modern architecture and historical resilience. Originally constructed in the 1930s, this remarkable basilica transitioned from a Soviet power station to a radio factory before being consecrated as a church in 2004. Its striking Art Deco design makes it one of the most beautiful examples of sacred architecture in the region, and it proudly holds the title of the largest basilical church across the Baltic States.
Well worth a visit if you’re in Kaunas. A decent walk up plenty of steps to get to the church! The entrance is on the far side, through a massive wooden door. Not wanting to get a sweat on we got the lift to the roof, which is now €5 each. The views are fantastic and worth every penny. You can also go in the actual church too.
Ned L — Google review
An absolutely stunning church. As you approach and see the full size of the church it is definitely a "wow" moment. It is simply huge and very stark. The simplicity of design continues inside. It feels minimalist and very modern but stil very beautiful. We loved the interpretation of the Stations of the Cross and the stain glass windows. No visit to this church can be complete without a trip up to the roof! We were lazy (well it was very warm) and took the lift. The views, and the perspective this vantage point provides, are definitely worth the 5 Euro fee.

The Upper Station of Žaliakalnis Funicular Railway in Kaunas offers visitors a chance to experience the ambiance of the city's elite from almost a century ago. This historic attraction is located near the Sports district, which features notable landmarks such as a pedestrian boulevard honoring Darius and Girenas, the first Lithuanian pilots to cross the Atlantic.
It’s €1 per person bring CASH!! So for 2 people it’s €2 ONE WAY. €4 two ways. Stunning views, we parked close to a church (pay for parking or park a little away on street roads to avoid this). Very cute. Old. The views are incredible nice little adventure worth saying you got on and experienced it. Cheap and cute 🥰

One of the two funiculars in Kaunas. This is a great means of transportation and attraction if you want to visit Christ's Resurrection Church. It runs regularly, the ticket costs €1, it is paid at the upper station, same like at the other funicular. The ride is short and comfortable. Be sure to use it, it is also suitable for children.

For some unknown reason, closed on a Saturday and Sunday. Bizarre, considering that it is a tourist attraction and quite a lot of tourists visit at the weekend. Modern, spacious, and well-organized — Žalgiris Arena is top-tier. Great atmosphere from the home team!
Rico R — Google review
There are two reasons why I'm leaving 1 star review, because it's not acceptable for the price they are charging to come to their venues. Reason 1. Seating on third floor , the row 7 by the stairs corner. There is literally no space for people to pass the last seat by the stairs corner. You can see in the photos. Those poor two men who had those seats on each side had to always almost stand to allow people pass and keep going down via stairs. Imagine all third floor audience of that section passing those two seats (those two men in this case) every time someone has to leave to go down or come back to their seats. It's more than annoying and is unacceptable for the stadium who can hold 22500 seats. It's just pure greediness of maximising all seats , even if there is not enough space to pass that stairs corner. Reason 2. SEL Concert was fine, but the "warm-up" DJ, their audio set up was disaster (don't know who to blame in this case) but music was cut off twice (DJ had to leave stage and come back after 5 minutes or so) and second time the speakers sounded worse than on your phone on speakers. We couldn't hear anything on the third floor (this "magically" was fixed with the main concert of Sel ) so who knows where the original issue was or who to blame. But from what I know , venues have microphones on each side of stadium measure the sound decimals /laudiness to make sure the sound is not too weak or not too loud. This venue/stadium failed to make sure good sound quality across all levels and 360 degrees audience. Very dissapointed by the stadium itself.

This museum showcases an impressive collection of animal taxidermy, skeletons, insects, and dioramas that vividly illustrate the diversity of life on our planet. Visitors can immerse themselves in the intricate details of various species while exploring this unique space dedicated to zoological education and appreciation.
The Museum is great for anyone interested in the natural world. Located in the heart of Kaunas, this museum offers a journey through the diverse realms of zoology, making it an enriching experience for visitors of all ages especially children. The museum boasts an extensive collection of over 200,000 specimens, showcasing the rich diversity of animal life from all over the world. The displays are meticulously organized, providing a comprehensive look at various species, their habitats, and behaviors. The dioramas, which recreate natural environments, are particularly impressive and help to bring the exhibits to life. One of the museum's strongest points is its educational focus. It caters to students, researchers, and casual visitors alike. Interactive displays and detailed information plaques provide deep insights into the animal kingdom, making it an excellent resource for learning.

This museum is conveniently located. Laisvės Alley is smooth. The museum collections are very informative and colorful. There are exhibits that show animals in the wild. Some exhibits are about 100 years old. But... how many animals have died and been stuffed...
Olga A — Google review
A very nice experience. It’s fascinating to see the animals up close and observe the details of their bodies—something that’s impossible in a zoo. The museum even includes some rare specimens, such as a 200 kg flounder and a saber-toothed deer. Some of the specimens even have amusing, expressive looks (see the last photo), so I recommend starting on the lowest level to lift your spirits right at the beginning of your visit.
Michal Š — Google review
Surprisingly good museum packed with collections of insects, shells, fossils and stuffed animals. It was so interesting I ended up spending much longer there than I anticipated. Excellent value for money.
Michael L — Google review
A lot of exhibits are missing descriptions and information, quite a few exhibits repeat themselves and many exhibits just have Latin names. There is no context why they are grouped in a certain way other than they belong to the same species. What stood out were animals that looked like got killed during hunting trips, some animals were dated to as recent as 2016. It’s not clear whether these animals were killed just for the museum, or somebody did it for fun and then donated them etc. I understand that it’s for educational purposes and mainly all items date back to early 20th century. But the museum presentation and overall feel feels outdated and some items are morally questionable.

The Maironis Museum of Lithuanian Literature is housed in the former rococo mansion of renowned Lithuanian poet Jonas Mačiulis-Maironis. The museum features literature events and exhibits, showcasing furniture, books, paintings, and other historical items with significant value. Maironis himself requested that his belongings be moved to a museum bearing his name, making it a tribute to his legacy as a priest and romantic poet.
Our visit to the museum was an amazing and spontaneous experience! I want to extend heartfelt thanks to the extremely friendly and skilled museum staff, who provided us with such insightful information and engaging exhibits. The team is impressively multilingual, speaking Lithuanian, English, German, and Russian. Additionally, it’s wonderful that Ukrainian citizens can visit for free. Thank you, Lithuania, for your generous support! 🇱🇹🇺🇦❤️ The museum features three distinct sections where visitors can explore Lithuanian literature from various perspectives: its historical development, the significant contributions of Maironis to Lithuanian culture, the works of exiled authors, and contemporary literary insights. The exhibitions are interactive and well-digitalized, enhancing the overall experience. This museum is a fantastic destination for individuals and families with children alike. 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒

It was amazing how they restaurated old gadgets and actually used them. The place felt alive, and welcoming. I can only imagine how much work it took, but thank you so much for this experience because it reminds how great Lithuanians where and is to this day, and that we need to not forget and cherish our past and future as nation💕

Incredible Art Deco museum in Kaunas (recenty Kaunas Modernist Architecture was granted UNESCO World Heritage status, and this building is an example of it). You need to buy a ticket online, book a date and participate in a guided tour. The ticket price is 23 EUR (totally worth every euro). The owners, a couple - Petras and Karolis, bought this beautiful art deco building, furnished it, rebuild it in a accurate manner and opened it for public to enjoy. It gives you a unique look into the life of lithuanians before Soviet occupation. Our guide was very polite, very engaging. You will be asked to take pictures AFTER the tour and you will have enough time to do so. You will be able to touch everything, to sit on furniture, open drawers and take a look. It's not your typical musuem where you can't touch anything. They also do tours in english and other languages. You can buy personal tour just for yourself, it will be more expsnsive of course.

The Church of St. Gertrude in Kaunas is a stunning example of Gothic architecture and a testament to the city's rich religious history. This compact brick church, dating back to the 15th century, is one of the oldest in Lithuania and exudes an air of architectural splendor. Tucked away in one of the courtyards off Laisves aleja, it offers visitors a glimpse into the past with its historical significance.
Small but historic church. It is fully refurbished recently and can admire the views from the outside and inside. The brick walls and facades are nice and the inside is also interesting. There are signs and leaflets to help you learn more about the history of the place.

Stunning and hidden away sadly the candles below were utterly stunning the entrance to which is behind the church the heat from the candles hits you as you go down the first step. The interior is just a delight and it is so small and pretty perfectly formed!

The oldest church in Kaunas and one of the oldest brick Gothic building in Lithuania) It was built in 15th century! The temple features its good location (in the central part of the city, not far from the Old Town) and a modest interior decoration. You feel a special mysterious atmosphere and tranquility here. Must visit)

A beautiful small church which is, unfortunately, surrounded by much taller buildings in the courtyard where it is located. The construction dates from early 16th century and is in Gothic style, the Baroque interior dates from the 18th century. In 2016 the facade was renovated so it's a feast for the eyes.

Museum
Nestled near the childhood home of George Maciunas, the Kaunas Picture Gallery (a subdivision of the M. K. Čiurlionis Art Museum) is a vibrant hub for contemporary art enthusiasts. This gallery recently showcased an impressive retrospective exhibition titled "Learning Garden of Freedom," featuring works by renowned nonconformist artist Yoko Ono, which spanned various creative mediums including conceptual art and performance pieces.
Lovers of modern art - go ahead! To be honest, the second floor seemed a bit boring because of lack of interaction but in general, if you wonder to see Soviet modernist architecture, it's definitely a place to see. The first floor seemed more promising with its modern art installations and a nice hipster cafe to chill out.

Gallery is closed! We stayed in Kaunas one more day only to be able to visit the gallery. No information on Google Maps according closure. We are definitely NOT coming back.

A must-visit for tourists. You can feel a vibe of conceptual and contemporary art here) There are crowds of people on weekends. It is a contemporary art museum where you can find masterpieces and performances by not only Lithuanian artists but also very world-famous names. You need around two hours to explore the exhibitions which combine all forms of contemporary art from paintings and applied art to installations, videos, photos and performances. Performances and exhibitions are best suited for adults. You can enjoy permanent exhibitions as well as temporary expositions held at the museum. In my view, the main highlight of the gallery is temporary solo exhibitions. They change once or twice a month. There is a café and a souvenir shop. If you love contemporary or conceptual art, you should visit it. My recommendation!

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here in the city, and was able to travel here via scooter! Me and my partner specifically came here for the Marina Abramovic exhibition 'memory of being' featuring some of her early works up to her most recent. The staff on entry were friendly and helpful, and the building itself is something worth passing by due to its concrete architecture. The curation of the exhibition was simple but beautifully done with audio carefully placed so you could hear each video! Additionally there were 3 rooms on different floors gradually moving through her work in chronological order, featuring some of her most well known pieces and ones I've not come across before!

The 1st Fort of Kaunas Fortress is a captivating destination for those intrigued by military history, nature, and urban exploration. This remarkable 19th-century structure offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing its significant role in shaping the city. Visitors can embark on night excursions to uncover the mysteries of this abandoned fort, where tales of the Beast of Kaunas linger in the air.
Recently renewed and ready to visit place for the bored explorers that want so see something more than usual urban architecture. Very interesting atmosphere mainly because it seems to be untouched by time and somehow you can feel the energy of a war as well as pressure that was affecting the residents of this fort. Sometimes you can see there some events so be aware of visiting those.
Justas N — Google review
It's an abandoned fort. It's not guarded and many parts are pretty dark so I suggest bringing a strong flashlight to explore the whole thing better, phone flashlight will not be enough since this place has very dark and long tunnels. Seems like they tried to renovate it at one point but it only messed negatively with it's natural abandoned beauty, I hope they leave it as is or even take out those lights they installed for some reason. I also suggest reading the history of it before visiting to be able to experience the vibes fully. Also september is the best month to go visit all the forts. For this one, no tickets are necessary just be careful and watch your step.

Kauno miesto muziejaus Tautinės muzikos skyrius is a modern and interactive museum that offers a unique experience for both music enthusiasts and casual visitors. The museum features a diverse collection of traditional Lithuanian musical instruments, as well as interactive exhibitions where visitors can play instruments, listen to music, and even create their own compositions. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the layout of the museum makes it easy to navigate.
Perfect for musicologists, music freaks, social historians and the simply curious, a wonderful museum to immerse in Lithuanian folk music culture. The museum explains the links between the land, the agriculture and the people, well curated with interactives and excellent detail. Nice and tidy museum. Besides the selection of traditional Lithuanian music organs it has a number of interactive exhibitions which can attract your interest even if, like me, you are not a music fanatic. The staff is really friendly and helpful. It worth a stop during your visit in Kaunas. You will not need about an hour or so to tour yourself around. Also there is a nice cafeteria in the court where you can sit and take a break.

My favourite museum in Kaunas. It holds a lot of traditional music instruments of various regions of Lithuania, some of which you are allowed to play with. You can also hear old recordings of folk music and music of artists who combine modern styles (rock, electro, metal etc with traditional music). There is also a separate building with organs and other key instruments. It only costs 2€.

The 2nd Fort of the Kaunas Fortress is a historic site located on high ground, with impressive renovated sections. It's really hard to get to. There is a swamp around where there is a house on one hen's leg, so if you go try to find that house. I would also recommend coming on a sunny day, because if it is humid, it will be very unpleasant to go. We cannot go to many places in the fort, but there are pictures about the history of the fort and its inhabitants. There are tables placed about the entire history of the fort. I definitely recommend visiting this wonderful and historic place. Sergius of Radonezh in the central fortification of the Kovno fortress, on the left bank of the Neman River, in the Freda area, was intended for the Kovno fortress artillery consisting of 20 fortress artillery companies (5 battalions). It was built by the military authorities of the fortress artillery on the basis of a former Catholic chapel (the builders were engineer-Colonel V.S. Neplyuev, from 1886 the head of the construction of the fortress, in 1907-1908 - the commandant of the fortress, and Lieutenant Colonel Voevodsky). According to the description of St. Grigory Tsitovich (Temples of the Army and Navy. Pyatigorsk, 1913. P. 166), “the church building is stone, on a stone foundation, one-story, covered with iron. The architectural feature of the church is a concrete vault; the walls are painted with fawn-colored marble patterns. The main dome is sky-colored. In the sails are images of the Evangelists. The altar looks especially impressive in the evening light: its dome is completely covered with a golden mesh, along which the light is scattered in millions of rays. The temple was consecrated on November 8, 1891; accommodates 200 people. According to the staff of the church, there is: one priest; The priest's apartment is state-owned. The Arch.-Mikhailovskaya Church in the settlement of Ponemone, 6 versts from the cr., is assigned to the church. Kovno." The style of the three-part temple with a high hipped bell tower above the porch was designed in the forms of the “Moscow-Yaroslavl” version of the Russian style. The decor includes crosses, paired shoulder blades, keel-shaped kokoshniks, flies, and crackers. After 1919, the church housed a horticultural school. Closed after World War II, the church housed the gym of the state farm-technical school named after. Michurina. Then the church was empty, the completions were lost. The building has been privatized and preserved. prot.

Old town cozy place in Kaunas is a small and compact area with plenty to offer. It boasts old churches, elegant architecture, and a well-preserved selection of buildings spanning hundreds of years. The New Apostolic Church in Kaunas is a historic church located in the charming Old Town. Situated near the picturesque Santaka Park and overlooking the iconic Kaunas Castle, this church holds significant historical value as one of the first churches in the area. Adjacent to it, visitors can also explore the Monastery of Bernardines, adding to the cultural and architectural richness of this religious site.
(Translated by Google) Can someone tell me what is going on in this building? Like a church. However, this "church" has a pet dog that runs around in its fenced yard. You understand that this is a modern place when the gate of the church garage (it's one and the same building) opens and from there one family says goodbye to another. This raises the question - is this building rented out to ordinary people, or does "savi" just live here?

Kaunas is a city filled with vibrant street art, and Kiemo Galerija is just one of the many spots to admire these urban masterpieces. As you stroll through the streets, keep an eye out for captivating wall paintings like the wise old man, the star seeder, and the pink elephant adorning building facades. These artworks add a unique charm to the city's atmosphere.

Museum
Specialty Museums
The Sugihara Museum is an interesting museum that tells the story of Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara and his work during World War II to save the lives of 10,000 Lithuanian, Polish, and German Jews. The museum charts the hero's life from pre-war Japan through the aftermath of the war.
This small museum presents the history of Japanese inter-war diplomat Sugihara and his associates, who issued "Visas for Life" for Jews and other WW II refugees, enabling them to abandon Nazi-occupied Europe, and find shelter in Japan, and ultimately USA. The exhibition is divided in three parts: "Kaunas, The Casablanca of the North, 1939-1940", giving the historical framework at the start of WW II; documents and testimonies on Sugihara and his associates actions; Sugihara's consulate office and home. When you visit the Museum, I highly recommend you have enough time to watch a 20-minutes introductory film available.
Michail D — Google review
This was one of the top 2 higlights of our 4 day visit to Kaunus. It was a bit of a trek on foot from the town but definitely worth the effort. From the outside the property is unassuming, inside however is a different story. We paid 10 Euros each, which included 2 Euro to watch a 20 minute film outlining what happened. The museum appears to be run by a small team, who were very helpful and on hand to answer any questions. The presentation of information and the use of mixed media to explain the historical events that took place were exceptional. What a great way to make a topic come to life and maintain interest. It would be difficult not to be touched by the impact that Sugihara had on the lives of thousands of Jewish people. He was a hero, a beacon of humanity in a very dark period of our history. This is a must visit place in Kaunas but note - opening times are limited. Leave enough time to fully experience what the museum has to offer. Highly recommended.

This is now our favorite museum in Kaunas. Located up on a pretty hilltop, arriving there feels like you are visiting someone's home... which in fact you are. It's a moving and inspiring place (you might even shed a tear). Top tip: pay the extra 2 euro to watch the documentary film. It's excellent and explains eveything in 20 minutes. The museum itself, though small, is simply lovely. It's very interactive in charming and surprising ways. For example, touch one of the keys on the piano and you will hear a musical piece from that time. Use an old time telephone connection board to hear a range of stories. The friendly young man who is a curator and also manages the museum was a wealth of knowledge, and is obviously very passionate about the museum. Top marks all around. Getting there: take a Bolt, about 4.5 euro.

Before I start looking for places to visit during my stay in Kaunas, I have never heard anything about the story of this place. But now I am really happy that I learnt so many things about the actions of these two brilliant diplomats. I really recommend every tourist/traveller to visit this place. It is like visiting a history museum of Lithuania during ww2. You will need around 1 hour or more to watch the introductory video and tour yourself around. The 5 euro entry fee is small (you can donate more, if you like) from my point of view. Bonus: It is open on Mondays, when almost every other museum is closed.

Was incredible to come to visit the house and office of a giant of a man who was responsible for saving the lives of so many during the Holocaust in 1940. I was personally connected to this story, with my grandparents being saved by Mr Sugihara. Thank you for the beautiful memorial in this museum!

The Church of Holy Sacrament and its monastery ensemble were constructed around 1678 on a spacious 5.5-hectare plot, with the construction lasting ten years. The church was consecrated in 1700 and underwent completion and interior fitting works under the direction of architect P. Putinis. Visitors are struck by the rearranged space upon entering, which may cause initial shock, but as they explore further, the significance of this heritage becomes clear.

(Translated by Google) This church left an indelible impression on me. I don't know the life story, but the signs of the times speak for themselves. Upon entering the main space there is an initial shock and slight confusion, as the space is rearranged and re-arranged so horribly that you begin to wonder at the lack of appreciation of such a heritage by the people who came up with it. As you climb the stairs, the whole idea of this heritage demolition becomes clear. It is easily shocking and makes you rethink what really happened in those times when these premises were not used for what they were built for. (Original) Ši bažnyčia man paliko neišdildomą įspūdį.
