Fortress
The Conjunto Monumental de la Alcazaba de Almería is an enduring fortress with protective stone walls surrounding an ancient compound, now housing historical exhibits. This 10th-century citadel is one of the most impressive in medieval Islamic al-Andalus and second in size only to Granada's Alhambra.
This fortress exceeded every expectation we had! It is huge and in really good condition. The gardens are gorgeous, and it also offers an amazing view over the whole city. Would definitely recommend it! It takes about 1 hour to see everything, but you can easily spend 3.
Vincent B — Google review
We spent a few enjoyable hours exploring this historic site, and it was definitely worth it! One of the best parts is being able to walk up the towers and take in stunning panoramic views over Almería. As EU citizens, we got in for free, which was a great bonus. Non-EU visitors pay a small entry fee of €1.50, which is still excellent value. Just a heads-up: check the opening times before you go, especially in summer. The Alcazaba typically closes in the afternoon and reopens around 7 pm, so timing your visit makes all the difference!
Stefano — Google review
This Alcazaba is really beautiful. I was shocked that it was free to enter. Lovely place to walk around even if the hill to get there is a bit steep! Definitely recommend visiting if you are in the area. Gives you a wonderful view of the town, port and sea.
Becky W — Google review
A must see place when in Almeria. It is a little bit like Alhambra in Granada, but smaller. However, we only visited part.of it, not where the terraced garden is; therefore, potentially it's much more than what we saw. It was free to enter where we went and visiting earlier in the day is worth it to beat the crowd. It's popular with tour groups. Great view of the city from the top. There are areas where excavation had taken place to study its history.
E D — Google review
Beautiful place to visit while in Almería, surprisingly large fortress, easy walk but no for wheelchair users. Only accessible by stairs. Very nice area to see all Almería and the docks. Quite interesting story and a nice place to wonder around and take nice photos. Free entry!
Ana L — Google review
The Conjunto Monumental de la Alcazaba in Almería is absolutely worth visiting and a true highlight of the city. This monumental complex offers a fascinating journey through centuries of history, from Moorish fortifications to Christian influences. The grounds are extensive, with well-preserved walls, beautiful gardens, and plenty of architectural details to admire. One of the best parts is that entry is free, which makes it accessible to everyone and a perfect choice for a leisurely afternoon. A visit here is not just about history – it’s also about the experience of walking through wide open spaces, taking in breathtaking panoramic views of Almería, the coastline, and even the surrounding mountains. It’s a place where you can take your time, enjoy a peaceful walk, and let your imagination travel back to times when the Alcazaba was a powerful stronghold. However, there are a couple of practical things to be aware of. Parking near the Alcazaba can be challenging, and the area directly behind the castle doesn’t give the best impression. There’s some visible criminal activity, a fair amount of litter, and groups of young people hanging around, which can feel a bit uncomfortable at times. That said, these issues are outside the main complex and do not take away from the beauty and historical importance of the Alcazaba itself. Overall, if you’re visiting Almería, the Alcazaba is a must-see. It combines history, culture, stunning views, and free entry – a perfect combination for anyone interested in exploring the city’s heritage.
Dorian N — Google review
We had free entry on the day, not sure why. The guy asked us where we are from and let us in for free 😊 Really interesting to visit. We relaxed there walking around for about 1.5h.
Kasia M — Google review
Great views of Almería and an interesting site. Most of the informational packages are in Spanish. A few have English translations. You can also download a guide in a variety of languages. It was hot at the end of August and there are lots of stairs to climb! Bring water!

Cathedral Encarnación de Almería is a Gothic and Renaissance Catholic cathedral that was constructed in the 16th century with the dual purpose of serving as a defensive fortress. It is the only structure of its kind in Andalusia, featuring a blend of Renaissance and Gothic styles. The cathedral's chunky turrets and buttresses were designed to repel attacks from Berber pirates and rebelling Moors during the 16th century.
Great place to visit especially outside of weekends and holiday season. Beautiful views and wonderful history. Do yourself a favour and visit.
Albert R — Google review
Absolutely beautiful cathedral made of huge and imposing stone. It’s €7 to enter the Cathedral each and €10 to also see the monastery. There is a large range of religious art and statues inside the building. High vaulted ceilings and shrines everywhere you look. I find it interesting to be in such an opulent place that is littered with donation boxes - never fails to amuse me. The atmosphere is also quite somber and quiet in my opinion - a certain eerie quality when a huge church is so silent and dark.
Phoebe D — Google review
Beautiful cathedral in the heart of Almería . The Cathedral is free during mass and usually on Sundays . Beautiful experience . You can feel the Holy Spirit all around .
Travellingaround — Google review
Beautiful and unique cathedral right in the heart of Almería. Its fortress-like design makes it stand out, and the mix of Gothic and Renaissance architecture is really impressive. Peaceful inside, with some lovely details and a quiet courtyard. Definitely worth a visit if you’re exploring the city!

One of Almerías places of interest/heritage sites. Amazing, very old and quiet Christian cathedral Very highly recommended 👍

I recently passed by the Cathedral Encarnación de Almería, and even though I didn't have time to go inside, I was truly impressed by its exterior. The cathedral looked stunning, especially with the beautiful decorations around it. The architecture is striking, and the intricate details are captivating. I’m looking forward to visiting again soon to explore the interior and capture some photos. Definitely a must-see landmark in Almería!

Refugios de la Guerra Civil Española de Almería is a small museum dedicated to the Spanish Civil War, offering an immersive experience through its exhibits and audiovisual displays. It was the last stronghold of the Republican government during the war and served as a protective shelter for over 34,000 civilians.
One of the most amazing places I have ever visited! Fascinating, Historical, Important, Scary, mysterious, intriguing and impressive. It was easy to book on-line on the web a few days before our visit. I recommend this. The entry kiosk is very small and you have to look closely to see the entry door. Amazing architectural engineering. The member of staff who led our tour was passionate and informative. (The tour is given in Spanish, and the guide kindly interpreted a little into English for us, as Spanish is not our first language). It starts with a video, and there are English subtitles on the video. You must see this place, Hopefully it helps us all think carefully about preserving peace in our lives.
Damian R — Google review
A view of Almería from a very different perspective, so definitely worth a visit, especially as it's only a 3€ entry. Book tickets in advance, since the capacity per timeslot is limited. The roughly 1 hour tour is given in Spanish (which I could follow), and a short summary in English was given at the end. For other tourists it might be better if there was one designated English tour, since the summary might feel a bit short to some.
Ana Ć — Google review
We enjoyed our visit to the tunnels. A fascinating historical tour that details what various persons went through during the wars and how the persons hid underground. Make sure you book tickets in advance though we managed to get tickets on the day within a few minutes of the start of the tour. Add this to your list when visiting Almeria.
CHARLES A — Google review
The tunnels are really interesting but you need to visit with a tour and the tour availability and booking seems very confusing and complicated? Also no English tours? We were very lucky to be at the door when a guide was looking for more people for a tour. It was mostly in Spanish but Amelio was great to summarise information in English for us.
Vincent O — Google review
If your in Almería town definately check out this very interesting historic tour. We had a great guide, some good stories and interesting facts. I would definately this 1.5 hour tour that covers about 1km of tunes.
Andrew ( — Google review
Quite the unique experience. Yes, the tour is in Spanish (there are some English information boards and subtitles) but that’s fine... it’s still something you’ll not experience anywhere else! A trip 90m below the city... through remarkable tunnels that still have the ambience of safety and fear combined. And don’t expect to end up where you started! €3 currently, pre-booked tours. Worth every cent!!
Jay L — Google review
Great place to visit. Easy to park nearby in underground parking. Cheap entrance at €3 and there is a lift for people who can't do the stairs. About one hour tour in Spanish.
Franziska E — Google review
Very different to you normally see as a tourist, not much English spoken though, which is a shame..up to 30,000 people hid in this 2 kilometres of underground air raid shelters, it was attached to the market, and could store foodstuffs, there was also a small hospital and a school....there is a lift / elevator, both ways ( up and down) but you will need to ask! 2019 it cost 2 euros....

The Centro Andaluz de la Fotografía is a serene and stylish museum dedicated to fine art photography. The gallery features spacious exhibition rooms showcasing the work of renowned photographers, with rotating exhibits that offer a diverse range of artistic perspectives. Housed in the 'Casa Vasca' or 'Casa Montoya,' this regional architectural gem was generously donated to the City Council of Almeria and has been adapted into the first headquarters of the Almeria Museum of Art.
Great free place to visit, two floors of photos depending on what’s on. I saw Parr por Parr , photos by Martin Parr , drawn to the Yorkshire ones but great human interest photographs from USA and Spain as well. Funny, real and powerful at the same time . They are running a sister exhibition in Malaga!

Wow - what an exhibition! We visited when a major show was on from the Chair of Magnum photographic group. What a delight to experience the slice of style - arranged in various themes. Warm welcome from the receptionist and sale of catalogue from the museum worker - would love to go back.
Christopher S — Google review
I wanted to visit this museum. The first time I went there it was closed, because it is always closed on mondays. So I went back another day. But when I want to enter, I was told it was closed whole week because of a exposition change. Why doesn't this museum inform his public about this? At the website and on the info near the door it is said that the museum is open. Why does this museum close totally when an exhibition is changed? I am very disappointed about this arrogant behavior. This is not the way to threat your visitors.

I caught a nice exhibition by some fabulous women photographers. I particularly liked the work of Maryam Firuzi (beautiful, thoughtful compositions that clearly took a lot of work) and Ana Elisa Sotelo's wonderful swimming shots (I shoot sports so really admire the skill and serendipity in the shots). Definitely pay the gallery a visit if you have any affinity for photography, art, or even if you just want to spend an hour looking at some nice photos. 🙂

El Cable Inglés, also known as English Pier, is a historic railway pier in Almeria that was used to transport iron ore from the train station to cargo ships in the port. Built in 1904 by British engineers, this impressive iron-steel structure remained operational until 1973 and has since been declared a Cultural Heritage Site.
You can't come to Almeria and not visit this place. Because it's a gem, the location is excellent giving you the most amazing views of the port, the ferry boats, the sea, the beach and the city. However, if you get nervous when up high then avoid it. It's like you're literally standing on top of the palm trees. We came here on a Sunday afternoon and saw plenty of people coming and going, the top area is the most popular for taking pictures and videos.

The Museo de Almería, also known as the Museo Arqueológico, is a modern museum that houses a diverse collection of prehistoric and neolithic crafts, weaponry, and ceramics. It was established in 2006 to showcase the rich historical heritage of the Almeria region from prehistoric times through the Islamic period. The museum's centerpiece is the 13-meter Stratigraphic Column, displaying the city's stages of development.
Fantastic museum, especially if you have visited the Los Millares archaeology site as the findings from there are displayed here with interesting information and well designed displays. I love Spanish museums as they as much art gallery as museum. A real feast for the ears as well as the eyes. It's also free!! Thank you Almería. One tip to the museum - do advertise the los Millares site more and vice versa as I think both would then have many more visitors.

Ever felt the thrill of unearthing a civilization’s secrets? Museo de Almería pulls you into a journey through time, from prehistoric treasures to Islamic artifacts, all housed in a sleek, modern space. Each exhibit feels like a conversation with the past, vibrant and alive. Did you know the museum showcases Europe’s oldest known loom weights, dating back over 4,000 years to the Los Millares culture? This isn’t just a museum it’s a portal to Almería’s ancient soul. A must for history lovers!

Went here with my family (ages from 6 to 40 yo) and we all loved it! It was a lot of very accessible (and free!) knowledge about the history of the area. It has something I've never seen before, which is a visual and physical representation of the soil strates that show the history of the soil of the region, with all the societies that inhabited it. Generally, every single exposition was very well explained and accessible to learn and understand for everyone! Definitely recommend it.

A very interesting and modern Museum. It shows four eras, beginning from the bronze age to the muslim era in the late middle ages. The entry is free.

We'd seen most other suggested Almeria Old Town attractions and still had some time to kill. Saw the Museo de Almeria was open, so thought, "Why not." So glad we did. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The museum itself is a very well laid out archaeological history of the area. We easily spent over an hour there. As a quality free activity, I'd say this is on the Almerian must see list.
Craig D — Google review
This museum is really interesting. Very open and clean. Indications are top. Toilets are clean. Very good that you can leave your luggage in a locker for 1 euro, you get it back after opening the locker. There are 3 departments of many cool artifacts and history. We prefer the oldest one. The 3rd floor is the Arabic culture. There are also a lot of little videos how they maked grane and other things. It was free when we were there.
S B — Google review
Very good museum! The amount of exhibits is not great but it spans from Paleolithic era to middle ages. Very interesting and unique exhibits!

Wow! The most imaginatively presented archeological museum I've ever visited (and there're been many!) The archeological layers are represented like a core-sample up the central stair-well with chronological finds shown as you go up the flights. Very moving reconstruction of the interior of a burial dolmen. Signage in Spanish and English. Ask at the reception desk if you want to buy the excellent guide book (available in 3 languages) - they're not on display! Very helpful staff.

This is a nice little museum if you are really into movies or John Lennon. It's more of a landmark for the Almeria film industry. When we were there, there was a guided tour in spanish. Overrated in my opinion. There are some interesting posters and stories about who stayed in the house. I've now been in a bathroom used by John Lennon. But there just isn't that much here and certainly not enough to justify venturing out from the center. At least admission was free. It would not have been worth the 3 Euros some have paid.

Offers a fantastic view over Almería. The area has been cleaned up a lot compared to a few years ago, making it a much more enjoyable spot to visit. There are several ways to reach the top — if you have a car, it’s likely the easiest option, as there are a few parking spots nearby. Otherwise, you can walk up, but be prepared for some long staircases. In the summer heat, the climb can be quite intense, so bring water and plan accordingly.
Stefano — Google review
Has an amazing view of the city. There is some reconstruction around the area, which is good because at least they are noticing the poor state of the mountain. But this made it difficult to find the way up, as there were no signs to follow. There was a lot of garbage on the way up but also around the site.

I have to leave just two stars for this place as it’s pretty dreadful. The statue and view is lovely if you can cope with the heavily littered and dangerously dirty street to get there. Then the site is obviously used as a drinking den for the local down-and-outs. Oh dear. Go to the Alcazaba instead and look over from a distance, at least then you won’t have to put up with the smell either.

Its striking design features three grand facades, including a magnificent triumphal arch adorned with iconic horseshoe arches that reflect the region's cultural history.

Nestled in the heart of Almería, the Museo de la Catedral de la Encarnación is a captivating destination that showcases the rich history and architectural beauty of this remarkable cathedral. Originally constructed in 1522 atop the ruins of an earlier structure destroyed by a devastating earthquake, this site reflects a unique blend of late Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassical, and Renaissance styles. The cathedral's fortress-like appearance is enhanced by two stunning facades designed by architect Juan de Orea.

Nice cathedral. The body is mostly Gothic style, with some elements of renaissance. The main altar and most of the interior is renaissance. The side chapels mostly early baroque, in the front renaissance. Nice visit, but.....it would be nice to have a paper guide with blueprint, general construction history and the information for all stations. The audio guide is super slow. It's just tiring. With a paper guide, I could get through it much faster. Also station 4 should mention something about the altar to the back of the choir (being in the very back of the church looking to the front). This is missing.

As you arrive in Almeria, one of the first sights to catch your eye is the stunning Old Railway Station. This architectural gem, which opened its doors at the end of the 19th century, showcases a striking neo-Mudejar design characterized by its impressive iron and glass facade complemented by red and enameled bricks. Originally serving as a vital link between Almeria and Gaudix in Granada province, this historical monument stands as a testament to industrial-era architecture.

The station’s under renovation, so I’ll try to be fair. But at the moment? It’s hot. Really hot. There’s little to no shade outside, and barely a whisper of air conditioning inside. You can feel the promise of future improvement… somewhere beneath the sweat. Let’s hope the upgrades include more airflow and fewer heat-induced hallucinations. Until then, bring water, patience, and maybe a portable fan.

Museo de la Guitarra Almeria is a dedicated museum showcasing the art, history, and craftsmanship of guitars, with a special focus on the influential Spanish luthier Antonio de Torres. Known as the father of modern acoustic guitars, Torres' work is celebrated through galleries featuring prints of guitar-themed paintings, films demonstrating guitar-making processes, and an interactive zone allowing visitors to listen to music and play both electric and acoustic instruments.
An interesting concept. A specialist museum. Nicely presented. Some fine copies of older guitars. Presently being upgraded. A hats off to the lady in reception who greeted us.

Beautiful building and good place to escape the heat. There are not many guitars to look at. Lots of reading material on the walls. The kids zone was closed at the time we visited and it was free entry - possibly due to the kids zone closure. I personally get more satisfaction out of visiting a UK music shop. Beautiful building that needs more internal investment.

go to a music museum where the goal is to immerse yourself in the sound of the guitar but while remaining immersed in silence because there is no working audio, that is to say no radio, no voices, impossible to listen to the different pieces of guitarists or the sounds of the different types of guitar. closed immersive space, closed second floor, closed audition room, in fact it is a museum that should be closed but no it remains open to waste the time of customers who will pay the full price just to be able to admire the oldest guitar and it’s over!

A small but wonderful musem. It is dedicated to Antonio Torres, spanish 19th century guitar maker from Almería that created the modern guitar. There are a lot of cool historic electric guitars with great stories. One can see the ways how the wooden guitars are made, also the historic story about the development of the guitar. Even though it is a small museum I found it really interestingg because of a lot of interactive content and reproductions. If one loves wood and guitars, a must see in Almería .

Aljibes Árabes, also known as the Arab Cisterns, is a historical site in Granada that features restored stone cisterns dating back to the 11th century. These ancient cisterns were built for King Jayran in 1038 and are now used for various events, including flamenco shows. The building housing the cisterns still bears King Jayran's name and offers free exhibitions, often featuring small art displays.

The main façade has a portico between two twin towers. We visited its interior, contemplating it and took photos.

(Translated by Google) The church of San Pedro stands out for its façade with a central body between setback towers, which produces the protrusion of the portico, very close to the purest neoclassical buildings. In it we appreciate other characteristics of this style, such as the concern for proportions, the columns that support the capital, even the combination of stonework and brick. Inside there are three naves that have five pairs of chapels on the sides. It has some frescoes by Fray Juan García in the dome of the main altar. The church was originally erected on the site of an old mosque - the Catholic Monarchs had ordered its construction in 1494. But it was destroyed in 1790 by an earthquake and rebuilt in 1796 in a neoclassical style.

Another great stay at this beautiful hotel. Perfect location for exploring the whole of Almeria city, especially the historic centre

Great service & attention to detail by all front line staff. (Incl. Reception, House Keeping, Bar/Restaurant). Nothing is ever a problem. * Wifi comes and goes...so if high speed or work needed to be performed relying on fast speed not so convenient. Other than that - Excellent service, super friendly staff and highly recommended. Great centrally located hotel.

Nice hotel, but definitely not a 4 star hotel. No idea how they determined that it was a 4 star. The room lacks the amenities that you'd expect in a 4 star, like the coffee, tea, kettle, conditioner. Otherwise the hotel is nice, parking is a few min away & at a cost. And the breakfast was good! Meats were very fresh. We accidentally booked for 1 person instead of 2 and they charged us for the extra person at breakfast, so just make sure you book correctly.
Serena V — Google review
Location is really good, service is ok. The food served at breakfast is terrible, don't bother wasting your money, great cafes around the corner. The worst thing about our stay by a long way was the NOISE. Massive amounts of banging and clattering, earth shattering pounding of a hammer at 9 o'clock in the morning, people running up and down corridors with suitcases... The list goes on. If I had the choice I would stay somewhere else next time, I feel 2 stars is being kind to this "4 star hotel".

My wife and I stayed mid July 25 for two nights whilst enroute to Gibraltar. Really nice hotel central to the old town and a 25 minute walk to the beach. Staff are friendly and very helpful. I used the multi storey secured carpark for 13 euros per day which is a 5 minutes walk to the hotel. Our room was the superior double with breakfast and free access to the solarium. Facilities in the room included, TV , free safe, fridge, hairdryer and shower over bath. For this grade of room in a four star hotel I would like to see tea & coffee facilities, none the less it's comfortable. The solarium has a jacuzzi, sauna and a couple of sunbeds. On our visit the sauna was not operational. Breakfast is basic however adequate. The cost was 240 euros for two nights, breakfast and carpark which is great value!

The hotel is a good pick, if you lower your expectations. I wouldn't call this a 4 star hotel. With this hotel you should set your expectations to a 3 star hotel. The personnel is very helpful and kind and the location is great. But the rooms are noisy and the beds are uncomfortable. The rooms also lack standard 4-star hotel amenities such as a kettle or coffee machine. Breakfast is decent. Bewaren that you can't access the roof without paying in advance!
Thijs O — Google review
Pleasant hotel for a short stay. Rooms were small but very functional. Staff was friendly and the breakfast buffet, though not fancy, was perfectly adequate. Prices are fair.
Julie T — Google review
Nice rooms with comfortable beds, a bath and a fridge ( not a mini bar). But Tv was only in Spanish , not what we expected from a satellite TV. Good location for Alcazabar, bars and restaurants. Access to Solarium was restricted (one hour free with our upgraded room) but you have to pay for additional time. There are sun beds but space is cramped and not very attractive. There is a gym but again you have to go to reception and get access. In the end I didn’t bother, it was too much faff. We could hear TV (or was it other customers conversations ) from the room next door, which was annoying . Check out at 12 mid day with a late night flight meant a lot of hanging about and they wouldn’t let us sit on the roof on the sunbeds which we had planned to do when we booked. Staff Could have been more helpful.

Historical landmark
The Primer Recinto de la Alcazaba de Almería is a captivating historical site that beckons visitors with its rich tapestry of enigmas and architectural marvels. Originally serving as a residential area, this lower compound reveals remnants of ancient houses and streets through ongoing excavations. While the climb to reach it can be challenging, especially for those with mobility issues, the effort is rewarded by stunning views over the city and serene gardens adorned with waterfalls and ponds.
A highlight of Almeria. Free entrance to wander around this fascinating old fortress. The restoration work being done is great.

Wonderful alcazar with commanding views over the city. It's a very quiet placee, the gardens are beautiful and offer tranquility, with steps with small waterfalls and ponds. The architecture of the castle is interesting and is of different time periods. All in all a must see, take about 2 hours to see everything.

Archaeological museum
The Centro de Interpretación Puerta de Almería (Muralla Califal) offers a glimpse into the historical significance of Almeria. Although it is often closed, visitors can still catch a view of the sea-facing city gate and remnants of the Roman fish salting factory. The site provides insight into Almeria's commercial life centered around fishing.
Interesting museum to spend 45 mins, learning about when Almeria was a walled city, plus after the wall came down.

(Translated by Google) Archaeological site whose visit is totally necessary to understand the historical evolution of the city of Almería. The museum proposal is a success, since they have been able to perfectly integrate and preserve the remains of the old access gate to the wall. First of all, it is worth highlighting the different phases of occupation of the area, where the remains of a salting factory from the Roman era have been preserved along with the medieval phase. Likewise, during the visit, you can see the different archaeological artifacts recovered during the excavations, as well as the various explanations that can be read throughout the exhibition. On the other hand, highlight the video where a very good explanation of the formation process of an archaeological site and its subsequent excavation phase is made. Finally, I would like to make special mention of the workers at the site. Professional, pleasant and sensitive to historical heritage. I enjoyed the conversation with them.

(Translated by Google) The site is spectacular. The truth is that everything should be promoted much more, because there are treasures that the vast majority of Almería residents don't even know exist. There's a lack of information, dissemination, and promotion of the things we have, and I don't know why they aren't sufficiently exploited. There are paintings and photographs that can be viewed in 3D, an audiovisual animation, and a few other things to interact with, some of which don't work.
