Churches & Cathedrals
Santa Maria de Braga Cathedral, a significant monument in Portugal, was constructed over several centuries and showcases a blend of architectural styles including late Gothic and Baroque. Designated as a national monument since 1910, the cathedral holds a rich history dating back to the 11th century. Despite numerous renovations, traces of its various periods can still be observed within its walls. Located in the heart of Braga, this captivating site is not to be missed on any travel itinerary.
This impression church of the 13th century is magnificent at the heart of the city. The architecture is marvelous and the interior is the church is just beautiful. The church itself is rebuilt to expand it multiple times and they have guided tour available. There is a magnificent organ present at the roof of the church which plays every evening. Visiting this church is a must one whole visiting the city.
Akash B — Google review
The Braga Cathedral is not just the oldest in Portugal — it’s the spiritual and cultural anchor of a city deeply rooted in history. Located at the gateway to the historic center, the cathedral’s Romanesque façade, adorned with Gothic and Baroque flourishes, immediately sets a tone of grandeur. During our visit, which coincided with Semana Santa (Holy Week), the experience gained an almost cinematic quality. The air was filled with the sound of processions, traditional chants, and the solemn echo of footsteps over ancient stones. Braga lives and breathes its Catholic traditions, and nowhere is this more visible than around the cathedral during such times. The interior reveals layers of devotion across centuries: richly adorned chapels, striking altars, and quiet spaces for reflection. Yet many visitors bypass one of the cathedral’s most precious treasures — the Cathedral Treasure Museum, which houses artifacts of enormous historical weight, including the cross used in the first Mass in Brazil. These pieces are displayed with reverence and are worth the detour. In the rear of the cathedral, the tombs of Henry of Burgundy and Teresa of León, the parents of Portugal’s first king, offer a moment of silence and historical grounding. This place is more than a monument; it’s a living archive of Portuguese identity. While the structure and ambiance are majestic, the lack of clear interpretative material can limit the experience for those unfamiliar with the site’s depth. A guided tour or audio guide is strongly recommended to fully appreciate what this space represents. Braga Cathedral is a must-see — not only for its architectural and religious significance but also for its role as a stage for the city’s most cherished traditions. Witnessing the Holy Week ceremonies here adds a layer of enchantment that transcends the physical space. It’s in those processions, candlelit nights, and local devotion that the true soul of Braga is revealed.

Impressive in terms of history, antiquity and exterior architecture. The entrance well guarded by a somewhat aggressive parishioner, who did not allow us to take a look inside at six in the evening, when we arrived from Porto, because the religious service for the locals was about to begin. On our next visit to Portugal, I hope we will have better luck with the parishioner and see the interior as well.

The Catedral da Sé de Braga is one of the most beautiful Catholic complexes in all of Portugal. The main altar is a stunning masterpiece of art, and the museum is equally impressive, filled with gorgeous rooms and sacred artworks. Our guide shared the fascinating story of Saint Frutuoso while showing us the church, which made the visit even more meaningful. I highly recommend visiting this incredible place!
Murillo P — Google review
This cathedral is very interesting, especially if you are fond if Baroque architecture. There is also one very interesting gothic chapel. When we arrived it was closed for lunch (12-14.30 I believe). We paid for the 4 euro ticket which allowed access to all but the museum. Visit took about 45 minutes including 10-15 minute wait for the guided tour. Friendly and knowledgeable guides.

The most amazing organ you will probably ever find in a Cathedral. Old, classic and well maintained. A must see, you won't be disappointed. Washrooms and lockers are also available. Tickets were very reasonable.

The Braga Cathedral, Santa Maria, is one of Portugal’s most important religious landmarks. Its mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles makes every corner fascinating. Inside, the ornate chapels, sacred art, and peaceful atmosphere create a moving experience — a true spiritual heart of Braga.
Esrf G — Google review
This is the oldest national cathedral in Portugal, predating the foundation of the country itself. Construction began around 1070, and the cathedral was consecrated in 1089. Over the centuries, it has absorbed a variety of architectural styles — from Romanesque to Gothic, Manueline, and Baroque — reflecting the artistic transitions of each period. Notable features include the tombs of Count Henry and Teresa of León, the Baroque high choir and organ, the Manueline main chapel, the cloisters, and several richly decorated Baroque chapels such as the Chapel of the Kings, the Chapel of Glory, and the Chapel of São Geraldo. As the seat of the Archdiocese of Braga, it has long served as the religious center of northern Portugal and is considered one of the foundational Christian landmarks of the Iberian Peninsula.

Botanical garden
Santa Barbara Garden is a charming flower garden located in the historic center of Braga. It features a central fountain with a statue of Saint Barbara and paths lined with benches, overlooked by the medieval wing of the Episcopal Palace. The garden offers a peaceful retreat for visitors to stroll, relax on benches, and admire its well-maintained flowers. Additionally, it provides an opportunity to enjoy the surrounding green areas such as Bom Jesus Natural Park and freshwater inland beaches.
Santa Bárbara Garden in Braga felt like stepping into a peaceful world full of colors. The vibrant flowers, perfectly kept lawns, and historic walls around the garden created a beautiful contrast. Walking here truly brought me calm and joy, as if I was surrounded by a small paradise in the city.
Esrf G — Google review
The Jardim de Santa Bárbara is one of those places that feels like a secret garden hiding in plain sight — and it’s nothing short of enchanting. Nestled right in the heart of Braga’s historic center, behind the medieval walls of the former Archbishop’s Palace, this public garden offers an explosion of color, history, and tranquility that surprises even seasoned travelers. We visited during spring, and the timing could not have been more perfect. The air was fresh, the sky a shifting canvas of clouds and light, and the flower beds were in full, glorious bloom. Tulips, marigolds, begonias, salvias, geraniums, and other seasonal species form a mosaic of colors with almost painterly precision. The neatly trimmed hedges, topiaries, and manicured walkways add a rhythm to the space — a perfect counterpoint to the wild beauty of the flowers. The medieval ruins of the palace’s arcade provide a stone backdrop that is both dramatic and serene, as if Braga’s past is watching over the present. This is an extremely photogenic location, ideal for casual snapshots or professional photography alike. Every corner seems carefully designed to frame a perfect image — with arches, towers, floral bursts, and symmetrical paths. You’ll find locals sitting on benches, reading, chatting, or simply enjoying the sun. It’s one of those rare places where you feel time slow down. One of the hidden treasures of this space is its subtle blending of garden art with archaeology — those arches and stones are not just decorative, they are fragments of Braga’s ecclesiastical history. That juxtaposition of blooming life and ancient stone gives the garden a sense of continuity that is deeply poetic. Best of all: it’s free to enter. This is not a gated, curated tourist attraction, but a gift to the city — and to its visitors. If you’re exploring Braga, don’t rush past it. Sit for a while, breathe it in, let your senses do the rest. The Jardim de Santa Bárbara is not just a garden; it’s an open-air masterpiece of color, heritage, and calm — a rare gem that feels like a privilege to stumble upon.

Santa Barbara Garden is a peaceful and well-maintained green space. It's a nice spot to take a walk, relax, or enjoy some quiet time surrounded by flowers and trees. While it’s not particularly large or full of major attractions, it offers a pleasant escape from the city’s hustle. Ideal for a short visit or a casual stroll.
Alejandra A — Google review
A truly charming spot in the heart of Braga! The Santa Barbara Garden is beautifully maintained, full of colorful flowers, manicured hedges, and a stunning view of the old Archbishop’s Palace. It’s a peaceful place to relax, take photos, or simply enjoy the atmosphere. The combination of flowers, fountains, and historic architecture makes it one of the most picturesque places in the city. It’s especially lovely in spring and summer when everything is in full bloom. Highly recommend stopping by — whether you’re exploring Braga for a few hours or staying longer, this garden is definitely worth a visit!

This is a beautiful garden with flower present all over it. It is well maintained and decorated, and people can roam freely here and enjoy the nature. There is a old fort wall present just next to the garden.
Akash B — Google review
Always stunning! The flowers are renewed every month, making the garden look different and beautiful each time. A true gem in Braga!

Sanctuary
Bom Jesus do Monte is a renowned sanctuary and pilgrimage destination located on a hill near Braga, Portugal. This UNESCO World Heritage site features a neoclassical church, exhibition, and picturesque wooded gardens. The highlight of the sanctuary is the grand Baroque stairway leading to the Church of Bom Jesus do Monte. Visitors can ascend the 577 steps or opt for a scenic ride on the water-powered funicular. The site also offers an elevator for easy access.
One of the most beautiful and visited church in the country. Visited this old church with a travel group and this was the best part of the tour. The church complex has multiple gardens, statues, a church, a gift shop and even a elevator tramp. The church itself is very beautiful and the architecture is marvelous, with stunning interior. There is a gigantic staircase present which one can climb to reach here from the bottom of the hill. This place is worth a visit and with its historic significance, this should be on your bucket list.
Akash B — Google review
It's an amazing construction and is beautifully set into manicured gardens just outside Braga. It is lovely to walk around and is a site that visitors to Fatima include in their itenary. Tough going in a wheelchair, but you can get into the main church. If you do visit and you have a car, go the extra few km up the hill to Samiero.

Bom Jesus do Monte – A Must-See in Portugal Bom Jesus do Monte is one of those places that leaves a lasting impression. The moment you arrive, you’re struck by the majestic baroque stairway, beautifully designed with fountains, statues, and intricate details at every level. Climbing it feels like a journey both physical and spiritual, with breathtaking views as a reward at the top. The sanctuary itself is stunning, set against a backdrop of lush greenery, and the panoramic views over Braga are unforgettable. Whether you walk up the grand staircase or take the funicular, the experience is equally special. It’s not just a religious site but also a place of serenity, history, and beauty—perfect for reflection, photography, or simply soaking in the atmosphere. For me, visiting Bom Jesus do Monte was a magical experience and one I would highly recommend to anyone exploring Portugal.
Evgenia Z — Google review
We only visited this beautiful place in passing. One of Portugal's most famous pilgrimage sites, it is famous for its monumental baroque, serpentine staircase. And from the top of the hill you can enjoy a magnificent view of the city. The world's oldest cable car with a water-balanced system still operates here, the ride itself is not a spectacular experience, but we tried it on the way down. We couldn't take a photo of the stairs from the angle below, because the funicular starts much further down and goes to the top of the stairs, so you have to walk down the stairs (or walk up a lot from the bottom) to the right position. It is worth walking a little higher up, where there is a very nice park with lots of trees and a boating lake.
Marcell B — Google review
Climbing the monumental staircase of Bom Jesus do Monte is an incredible experience — each terrace lined with real-size statues and symbolic fountains tells a story. The view from the top is breathtaking, and the surrounding gardens are peaceful and beautifully kept. A perfect mix of faith, art, and nature — absolutely worth the visit!
Murillo P — Google review
Since it’s a spiritual journey, it’s really nice to walk up on foot and follow the depicted path of Jesus. Entry to Bom Jesus was free, and it’s clearly a popular spot for weddings – we happened to arrive just as a bride was walking out, which gave us the chance to look inside the church. On the way back, we took the funicular for €2.50, which felt very fair. 👍
Lucie S — Google review
Took number 2 bus from the city center. My suggestion is to ride the funicular up and walk down the stairs if possible. If you take funicular both ways, you will miss some amazing views. This place is a must if you are in the area. Short day trip from Porto. You have to pay a small fee to use the toilet but it's very clean.

Highly recommend! What a beautiful UNESCO site. The stairs and the pilgrimage story behind it is beautiful. Funicular was a quick short ride. Ice cream places and hotels around. Loved the boating experience at the lake.

The Arco da Porta Nova is a significant landmark in Braga, Portugal. This iconic pedestrian entrance arch showcases stunning baroque and neoclassical details, representing the city's rich history. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll through the historic center to explore various churches, historical buildings like Palacio do Raio and Theatro Circo, and enjoy a coffee at Brasileira with views of Avenida Central.
The historic gate is good spot to start walking around, we enjoy to see everything about Braga, the community, building, people, and Church. Personally I like Braga a lot. Hope I could be there again.

It is a historical monument in Braga where you can visit for free, no admission, and open for 24 hours. If you walk from Braga train station and follow the centro sign, you will see this monument from far. The monument is standing there beautifully to welcome you to the Braga city. After you enter, it is only a pedestrian way, only an authorized vehicle can pass tat way.
Rita — Google review
This is one of Braga’s most iconic landmarks and historic gateways. Originally part of the medieval city wall, it was constructed around 1373 during the reign of King Dinis with the building of the Torre da Porta Nova (New Gate Tower). The gateway was completed in its early form in 1512 under Archbishop D. Diogo de Sousa. In 1772–1773, the arch was redesigned by André Soares, incorporating both Baroque and Neoclassical elements. The western façade is ornate and Baroque in style, while the eastern side is simpler and Neoclassical. Notably, the arch was built without an actual gate, giving rise to the local saying: Bracarense nunca fecha a porta — Braga folk never close their doors.
Seokjin H — Google review
Very interesting history about the gates. Also notice the different facades, outside the city walls the coat of arms to show power and inside the city walls Mary is there to protect the city.
Louise W — Google review
The history gate which symbolises the start of the old city is magnificent. This gate is the start of the walking street to explore this old city and the main market place which also have churches and gardens lined up. This place is usually flocking with tourists and have been the major attraction of the city.

It's a historical monument, nothing too exciting, but a great place to grab lunch as there are several restaurants around it. It has great details and it's a great place to take photos as the environment around it is very interesting with the contrast between the old and new.

The Monastery of São Martinho de Tibães, located near Braga, Portugal, is a serene and historic site that showcases centuries of religious devotion and architectural splendor. Originally founded in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 18th century, this Benedictine monastery features rococo decorations and is a significant example of baroque architecture in Portugal.

Most of the current elements were build/added during the 17-18 centuries. In the 19th century it's territories were sold and stayed private until 1986. It's internal architecture is similar to the Convent de São Salvador de Vilar de Frades (Barcelos).

It's not Bom Jesus, just to be clear. But it's a beautiful and well restored monastery. Very creepy because it was so huge and the photographs throughout depicting the restoration are really interesting. It was so dilapidated and they've clearly worked very hard to restore it. It's informative and very peaceful. If you can, do the extra walk around the grounds because this was so good! There are some beautiful woodlands around the monastery with pools and fountains which you would just never know about and they're heavenly. To learn about how the monks lived and how they tended the environment around them up here was a lovely experience. I would definitely recommend.
Helenfrancesca — Google review
I visited the Monastery of Tibães and was struck by its history and potential. While some areas are showing signs of wear and tear, it's clear that renovation efforts are underway. The architecture is impressive, and the gardens are peaceful. Despite its current state, the monastery still exudes a sense of grandeur and cultural significance. If you're interested in history and architecture, it's worth a visit. Plus, you'll be supporting the preservation of this important site. Come and see for yourself – it's a piece of Portugal's rich heritage!
Nuno L — Google review
Staff were nice, and the place is relatively quiet (except for the construction work being done), but it's quite the detour and there isn't all that much to see - it's old and mostly empty, plus the gardens weren't open when I went. The place is undergoing renovations so it does have potential, but at the moment I can't really recommend. The cappuccino was delicious ;)

Got the local bus from Braga. Stayed for 3hrs. Doing some external renovations, so much to see inside.
Kevin H — Google review
The Mosteiro de Tibães is a truly beautiful and inspiring place. Surrounded by peaceful nature, it offers an atmosphere of serenity that allows you to travel back in time. The work of renovation is remarkable — a true tribute to the region’s heritage and to the history that shaped it. Every detail seems to have been restored with great care and respect, preserving the soul of the monastery while giving it new life. A visit here is not only a journey through architecture and art but also a celebration of the culture and spirit of northern Portugal.

Definitely the most beautiful Monastery I've been to (and I've been to a few). Definitely worth doing thw listening tour, was very informative and there was always something available to listen to. In total took about 3hours for us to tour the entire grounds, but it definitely worth it. The safe was so friendly and nice, and the atmosphere was amazing and beautiful as it was rich with so much history... Do ensure that you visit the beautiful lake on the grounds before leaving. Definitely a must see when in Portugal.
Kezia V — Google review
such a quiet space, and impressive visit - you are allowed to see almost everything, very impressive for instance to see the old kitchen with its bread ovens or also interesting to see the old toilets - you get a glimpse not only of the spiritual significance of the monastery but also of how the monks lived. thank you!

The Raiu Palace (also called the Mexican House) was built during the reign of King Joao V, 1774-1755, and is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city of Braga. The palace construction project was developed by the architect Andre Soares, already known in Braga for his artistic projects, by order of the influential and wealthy businessman Juan Duarte de Faria, who was also a knight of the Order of Christ. Presumably in 1867, the palace was sold to the entrepreneur Miguel Jose Rai, and after a while the Palace became known as the Raiu Palace. Later, the building passed to the Order of Mercy, which housed the separate rooms of the Hospital of St. Mark in the palace. As for the architectural features, the palace is made in the late Baroque style. The Baroque style is mainly reflected in the structure of the building, and the building is decorated in the Rococo style. The facade of the two-story palace, with the exception of the window decoration, is decorated with the famous azulejo tiles. The roof of the palace is decorated with a balustrade with pointed turrets. On the ground floor, in addition to the main entrance, there are two more side doors painted blue to match the facade of the building. On the second floor, the balcony, which is located directly above the main entrance, is also decorated with a balustrade and two decorative sculptures. The flank windows on this floor are less sophisticated than the center windows. Particular attention is drawn inside the main staircase with three flights, decorated with a sculpture of a Turk. Raiu Palace is one of the most visited places in the city of Braga, and since 1956 has been included in the list of monuments. which are of public interest
Alexandre A — Google review
The Palácio do Raio (Raio Palace), also known as Casa do Mexicano, in Braga is a truly unique landmark, distinguished primarily by its exuberant and highly ornamental Baroque façade, a remarkable example of the city's civil architecture. What makes it particularly distinct is its richly decorated exterior covered in blue and white azulejo tiles, depicting mythological and allegorical scenes, making it one of the finest examples of a tile-covered building in Portugal. The windows and balconies are adorned with elaborate stone carvings, and the building is topped with a balustrade featuring sculptures. The combination of azulejos, stonework, and sculptural elements creates a stunning and unforgettable façade. Built in the 18th century, the palace reflects the refined taste of its owner, João Duarte de Faria, and the Baroque style of the era.

Lots of history here if you love it. I do! Worth the stop, a mostly self-guided tour with friendly staff to help point you in the right direction. More information is available in holders on laminated placards in several languages. You basically have to look everywhere from the ceiling to the floors. It's painted and tiled almost everywhere inside. Baroque history and I think it's amazing that the items displayed made it for us to see in the here and now. The Gardens are free and the tour is just €2. We went in the Winter so the garden was waiting for Spring. I don't doubt it is beautiful in season.

Museum is well kept and well explained in Portuguese and English. So pity garden is under refurbishment and not being able to enter.

At the Biscainhos Museum in Braga, I could almost feel and imagine the lives of the nobles who once lived here. From the horse stables to the huge Baroque ballroom, every detail tells a story. The decorated rooms, antique furniture, and peaceful gardens made the visit both cultural and relaxing.

You just might be-surprised by the Museum and the Palace Biscainhos in Braga, Portugal. Biscainhos Palace is an aristocratic palace of the 16th century where there is an interesting ethnographic and art museum. This magnificent palace is located in the center of the city of Braga, in northern Portugal. The museum shows a beautiful collection of Roman relics; furniture and ceramics dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The palace itself is already an excellent reason for a visit. It has brown roofs and tiles polychrome from 18th century. The tiles represent various hunting scenes. Carriages passed through the ground floor when they were to the stables. You will love its ornate ceilings, tile work, and overall baroque style. #lovelife #RespectAndLove #vacationeveryday

This was a great museum! A great peak into the lives of the wealthy in the 18th century. The gardens are expansive and beautiful. Worth the visit for anyone who appreciates preserved time capsules like this. There was no renovations going on as I saw in previous reviews unless they were in bedrooms, which we did not see or perhaps they’re normally not on exhibit. The staff was also very friendly

Perched atop a 566-meter high hill near Braga, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro is a significant Catholic pilgrimage site in Portugal. It is the country's second most important sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary after Fatima. The sanctuary, founded in the 18th century and later expanded with a chapel and basilica, draws crowds of pilgrims who gather to honor the Virgin Mary every year on the first Sunday of June.
Definitely a must see when visiting Braga. We didn't expect such a monumental place. I cannot even say I "liked" it. The area is huge and overdimensioned and gives a very special feeling. Maybe comparable with former Nazi Rally Ground in Nuremberg. It makes you think. Portugal must have a very special relation with the catholic church. You need to be there and feel. Pick a sunny day and plan several hours. Bom Jesus is another important catholic place nearby, you could combine the visit, but maybe you shouldn't, because the impact is totally different.
Grigory G — Google review
Beautiful cathedral and give very calm feeling. We got ice cream in a cafe near it and we were just sitting and chilling outside on the bench. Really peaceful place. Architecture is beautiful and I loved two angels statues before the entrance.
Daryna H — Google review
Lovely setting up above Bom Jesus, worth the visit. Mass is said on Wednesday at 11.00am in English if interested. There is a huge conference (?) center beneath the church where I guess they hold major religious events that are too big for the church.
Owen T — Google review
We saw this on the way to Bom Jesus Do Monte and speed to have a look. We didn't go into the basilica, but admired it from the outside. The complex that the sanctuary is on is vast and beautiful. The steps leading up to the church and the columns are majestic
Caitlin Z — Google review
Higher up than Bom Jesus so worth visiting at the same time. Plenty of parking. A wide flight of straight steps lead up to the church and I have been there when there is a large canopy/alter between the two pillars at the top of the steps where presumably priests address large outdoor congregations on the steps below on special religious occasions. At certain times you can gain access to the dome walkway for a reasonable charge.
Roger T — Google review
This is one of Portugal’s most important Marian pilgrimage sites, located atop Monte Sameiro. It began in 1863 when Father Martinho António Pereira da Silva of the Archdiocese of Braga erected a small monument to commemorate the 1854 proclamation of the Immaculate Conception. Construction of the main church began in 1863, with a new expansion in 1890, and the sanctuary was eventually completed in the 20th century in Neoclassical style. Major pilgrimages are held annually on the first Sunday of June and the third Sunday of August.
Seokjin H — Google review
Oh this place is so worth to visit just for the sunset alone. It is really magnificent. It is also good for a walk and you have many great views of the cities and landscape from above. Just like Bom Jesus this is a must see if you are in Braga or close. You have multiple places to sit down and relax in this quiet place and I believe there is also a restaurant or bar at the site if you get hungry (closes late afternoon). When I visited there was some exposition downstairs.

Visitors can explore artifacts unearthed from archaeological sites across Portugal, providing a fascinating glimpse into ancient civilizations.
Lovely museum with several artifacts. Self guided tour. Museum and Cafe staff were very friendly. Plenty of parking spaces in the lot and roadside, for large campervans as well. I definitely recommend a visit if you are in Braga.

We had a wonderful time viewing the Roman antiques! They have a small but high quality collection upstairs. They also have collections of sundries from the Neolithic, Chalcolithic, through the bronze and Iron Age found in and around this region of Portugal. The cafe looked great too though we didn’t eat. The gardens were nice to walk through as well I would return.

Very interesting museum of archological finds, also possessing a fantastic bequeathed private Greek and Roman collection. The collection is perhaps rather small considering the massive size of this interesting modernist building.

Very well kept museum with a collection of archeological finds from a lot of centuries BC to the Roman empire. The museum is not very big (you're able to visit it calmly in an hour or so), and has a cute gift shop with some interesting merch. The collection is very interesting and pieces look very well maintained. The museum holds very interesting events, classes and workshops. It also has a library, a children's area and a restaurant, located just to the side of the gift shop on the lower floor. The museum is accessible and has ramps and elevators for wheelchairs and people with disabilities circulation.

Museu Pio XII in Braga is a must-visit cultural landmark, offering a diverse collection of archaeological relics spanning from the Paleolithic era to modern times. Housed in the historic building of the Conciliar Seminary of Santiago, the museum features three distinct visitation areas showcasing religious art, paintings, statues, sarcophagi, and more. Visitors can also explore Nossa Senhora da Torre, a medieval tower with breathtaking city views.
One of the best museum experiences I have in Braga! First of all, the receptionist was very friendly and spoke good English. She explained the different exhibitions on each floor and guided me on how to get to the tower (which apparently is on a different building even though you can buy the ticket to the tower from here 😅). Ground floor is the exhibition for artifacts and religious objects from Braga, from stone age until now. First floor is the exhibition for Henrique Medina's paintings. All of the objects and paintings are very well preserved, despite how open they are for the public. Definitely a must visit museum in Braga!

Such a lovely little gem. Really interesting inside the house but the real star are the gardens and tea room. So beautiful! Only €3 entry and the small selection of gifts they have, are really well priced. The guy on the front desk could work on his demeanor but maybe we caught him on a bad day. All in all, a sweet little visit.

Good dinner experience. Highly prized but super tasty food.
M. A — Google review
We were eager to try some authentic Portuguese cuisine during our road trip, only to be sorely disappointed by our experience at this establishment. The service was dismal, characterized by a server whose attitude was not only unhelpful but openly disdainful. Our earnest attempts to engage using the local language were met with ridicule rather than appreciation, making us feel unwelcome and embarrassed about our pronunciation. To make matters worse, the bread served was so stale it could have caused dental damage. Communication with the server was an exercise in futility; his rapid-fire Portuguese was indecipherable, and he made no effort to help us understand the menu, which wouldn't have been as much of a problem if the dishes weren't exorbitantly priced. Although the food itself was decent, it wasn't nearly good enough to compensate for the overall negative atmosphere. It's disheartening to visit a place that could have showcased the best of its culture but instead chose to alienate us because we weren't fluent in the language. This was a sadly disappointing experience, and it’s a place I'd advise any non-Portuguese speakers to avoid. A sad, sad chapter in what could have been a delightful culinary adventure.

What a great meal! The flavours are outstanding, so well prepared. And then, there also is the host. Such a wonderful man that is kind, and helpful. He is so proud of his restaurant, and he is rightfully so! It is a true gem!
Ronald B — Google review
The whole place is very old fashioned. Its like nothing has changed since 1965. Food was OK but unimaginative and menu not exactly exciting. Interior is amazing, in that the place is clearly very old and has probably been there for several generations. You can't park outside and it's a walk down a dark narrow street to get there. Service was fine but again it all felt like a throwback to the early 70s.

Braga Municipal Stadium, also known as Estadio da Pedreira, is a unique 30,286-seat stadium designed by the renowned architect Eduardo Souto Moura. It was built for Euro 2004 and features one end carved straight from the cliff-face of the former Dume granite quarry on Mount Castro. The stadium offers stunning views of the Cavado river valley and is part of an Urban Park integrated into the hillside.
We did tour of the stadium and it was so much fun! First, there was a power outage at the stadium... We couldn't use the elevators, for precaution... There was not a lot of stairs, so it was ok! They had a match the day before, so the kids got to keep some souvenirs!

Great and iconic stadium. Really worth to visit. The views in and around the stadium are such unique!! The atmosphere is a bit calm, but considering how many people in Braga live, it’s totally understandable. Highly recommended.

Beautiful, unique, iconic stadium. One of the best, but the access is quite difficult: when there is no game, the gates of the parking lot are closed, so then you need to walk around. However, when the gates are open, there is a scenic walk down the rock wall with a view of the stadium while going down, also when leaving the stadium after a game. Amazing

Situated in a former quarry, it's an architectural wonder. Good visibility on all seats. Shame that only has 2 stands, in the winter is really cold, and sometimes isn't as accessibile as it should be

The stadium is a bit out of town, but still easily accessible on foot. Incredibly friendly employees. We had a guided tour, the guide knew all the details of the stadium, all the history, for every match, every piece of information. The stadium is very beautiful, they took us all over the stadium except for the locker rooms, which they no longer take to because of COVID. We toured the stadium from the basement to the top row of seats. At the end, she advised us what to buy in the store. And of course, where is their store in the center. The stadium is beautiful and worth a visit.

Braga Tower, also known as Torre de Menagem, is a significant historic landmark located behind Republic Square. Visitors can explore a free museum inside the tower which provides insights into its history and that of the city. The museum features graphic panels depicting life during Roman times and beyond.

I loved to be able to go inside a medieval castle tower, that alone would be awesome, to climb the same steps people climbed many centuries ago. But that's not all. The tower offers a free museum with it's history and that of the city. The graphic panels give a great idea of how life was in the time of the Romans and later. It's a must see in Braga, especially because it is centered and free.

This is the only surviving structure of the Antigo Castelo de Braga (former Braga Castle). A Gothic-style military tower, it stands 30 meters tall and contains three internal floors. Construction of the castle began in the 12th century during the reign of King Dinis of Portugal as part of a larger fortification effort. Additional work was carried out during the reign of King Fernando. The keep tower served as the central stronghold. Most of the original walls were demolished between 1905 and 1906 during a period of urban expansion, leaving only this tower as a remnant of the medieval fortifications.

The tower has a small little, free museum inside that describe the different time spans and movements in Braga throughout the centuries. It really put the fall of the Roman empire, the growth of the Catholic Church and the devastation of the plagues into perspective.

The Braga Tower, (Torre de Menagem) is the only authentic surviving structure of the medieval castle. This 30-meter-high granite tower offers a glimpse into the defensive strength of the five towers that once guarded the city's medieval walls. A magnificent location in the very centre of Braga. I've visited there twice now for the Semibreve Music festival and the building is outstanding. The staff are always super friendly and the sound is perfect. Great views from almost every seat in the house too. My only problem was the toilets which are old fashioned cubicles for men and women on different floors, with only 3 available at a time, so huge queues build up very quickly, so be prepared to wait! Some photos here taken by Adriano Ferreira Borges but the credit didn't seem to attach! I just want to be polite.

The chapel has a rich history, and visitors can enjoy friendly staff while exploring its ancient atmosphere. For a small fee, visitors can access the chapel, tower, and enjoy a drink at the top.
Really nice small little chapel. Friendly staff who work here too, had a great conversation with them. For 5 euros you get access to the chapel, the tower above and also a drink at the top of the tower. Well worth it and the views although not spectacular were enjoyable.

This is a very small chapel with a small room filled with statues and decorated with wall arts. The chapel has a tower where one can climb a d enjoy the panaromic view of the city. There is a restaurant within the chapel complex and this is just a short visit place. They have maintained this place good and the front architecture is beautiful.

I‘m not sure why you pay €5 entrance fee for a tower that literally offers nothing - particularly not a view. The chapel is nice and interesting but tiny. The best is the drink included, but somehow a strange experience. Overall somehow disappointing.

While not covered in gold or intricately carved woods, the chapel breaths ancient atmosphere once inside its small space usually only by oneself or group. The walls are covered in hand painted tiles as well. The garden/yard in the back provides a quiet retreat with coffee and biscuits, beach chairs and music.

Coming from a culture vulture, this rating should ring bells. This is a tourist trap, and I couldn't help but feeling cheated and stupid for having spent 25Euro for entry of 5 persons in a miniscule chapel of barely 10 sq meters which will take you no longer than 2-3 minutes to see. The center is known for its gastronomic delights such as codfish prepared in different styles, roast kid, and Pudim Abade de Priscos. Visitors can also experience the Bracara Augusta event which showcases Roman era reenactments and traditional cuisine. The city's vibrant nightlife caters to all tastes.
Took me around 30mins of walking from Braga Parque. But the walk was worth it. Hasn't got much shops but does have Worten, Continente.

It has everything you need a huge supermarket - electronics - food - clothing - sports. There is lots of space to walk around and not feel to close to others. The parking access is easy and offers lots of spaces.

This is a great little mall. It has amenities like a super market and other stores. The reasons why I am not giving this little place 5 stars are: 1- No movie theatre. Seriously. 2- The kids play area is very small. 3- The food court has not much in the way of portuguese food. Otherwise you will find a quaint place. It is safe and clean. Also, as an added bonus, it has a lot of parking space.

Igreja Misericórdia is a 16th-century church located in the pedestrianized center of Braga. It stands as a significant example of Renaissance architecture and features an impressive baroque carved altar. While some parts require paid entry, there are also free areas with captivating sculptures to explore. The tranquil surroundings and beautiful architecture make it a must-visit in Braga, offering visitors a peaceful and elegant experience.
It's a very beautiful church. Everyday there is a mass at 5pm and before you can attend Adoration.
Seraphina K — Google review
It has an amazing architecture, but I simply do not like the idea of paying to enter a church. There are many interesting sculptures that you may see for free and if you want to see more, there are also the paid parts of the cathedral and the museum, which are also beautiful.
Jade — Google review
At first glance, the Igreja da Misericórdia de Braga might go unnoticed by those who pass between the bustling square and the grand Sé Cathedral just behind it. But this church is no mere footnote in Braga’s religious landscape — it’s a radiant jewel of Renaissance architecture and deeply lived faith. Our visit coincided with the Semana Santa, and that alone elevated the atmosphere to something bordering the mystical. Processional floats, like the striking figure of Christ crowned with silver rays and surrounded by white flowers on deep purple velvet, awaited their moment of passage. The scent of incense, the gilded altarpieces, and the glow of stained glass cast a golden reverence over the small but richly decorated interior. What many don’t realize is that this church has a quiet passage that links it directly to the Sé Cathedral, forming a shared sacred space — architecturally and spiritually. This connection grants access to the Cathedral’s Treasure Museum, a marvel in itself, where we saw a fascinating array of vestments, ancient crosses, religious relics, and even Hispano-Arab tiles. The church and museum together form one of the most immersive windows into Braga’s layered religious history. One of the most surprising moments came as we explored the rear courtyard behind the church. There, unexpected and mostly unmentioned in guidebooks, lie traces of archaeological ruins, including tombs from Roman times, stone artifacts, and silent cloister spaces soaked in history. It’s the kind of detail that rewards the attentive and respectful visitor — a place where the past still breathes through mossy stone and rain-slicked granite. Despite all its richness, the church lacks proper signage and explanations for foreign visitors, and some areas — especially around the ruins — feel neglected, as if waiting to be rediscovered. But that, in a way, is part of the charm. This is not a place of polished tourism. It’s a space that asks you to look closer, to slow down, and to listen. Igreja da Misericórdia is not only a hidden treasure — it is a living one. Humble in appearance but astonishing in content, it connects Braga’s sacred tradition to the visitor in a quiet, powerful, and intimate way. Those who walk past without entering will miss not just a beautiful church, but an entire dimension of the city’s soul.
Cláudio C — Google review

Creepy church filled with bones and coffins. Typical Catholic memorabilia and numerous opportunities to continue enriching the Catholic Church through donations. The ruins are falling apart.
CathDonnelly — Google review
We are catholic and go to mass every Sunday. We were not allowed to enter the mass despite the fact that we told the short man in the entrance that we are catholic. All he said was: it lasts one hour and we said we know because that’s the usual length of the mass. We were dressed appropriately and he let the other people go through. I don’t know if it was because of our age or because we don’t speak Portuguese because we are from Argentina. It’s disgusting to be treated like this by your own church.

The Roman Thermae of Maximinus is an excavated public bath complex dating back to the 1st–3rd centuries BCE. While some visitors find the lack of well-marked signage and underwhelming excavation disappointing, others appreciate the spacious museum displaying numerous pre-Roman and Roman artifacts. The actual excavation features a small area with mosaic flooring, but it may not meet some visitors' expectations.
Very interesting roman baths ruin in the middle of the city. The excavations were well done and are well kept to this day. The price to visit is 2 euros for a full ticket and 1 euro for teachers, students and elderly people. It's well signed and very empty, so you can enjoy a tranquil visit.

The thermae complex was constructed in the second half of the 1st century BC. The theatre - 2nd century. By the 5th century both were abandoned.

Worth seeing, but could be better. You'll only need about 30 minutes to see and read everything at this museum, but it's still worth the price of admission and half an hour of your time. Getting to see Roman ruins so close up with so few people around shouldn't be overlooked. I would say that the site definitely lacks information, there at only 4 sign boards to read and the computer which I assume is supposed to provide more details isn't working.
David T — Google review
If traveling abroad make sure to bring student id or teacher I'd, they give a discount here. It's only a few euro to enter and a short visit, but so worth it! They had an interesting video about how people used the baths throughout history and you can see how the amphitheater is being excavated and sits right in the back yard of some folks. Such a neat way to see history and see how we have been building from there, how it's impacted our cities and towns today, and makes you wonder how our choices today will impact the future.

Also there is a small visitor center where you can find a good lot more of information and guided tours. Recommended place to visit next to the Archaelogy Museum.

The Congregados Basilica, also known as Igreja dos Congregados, is an 18th-century baroque basilica located in Braga, Portugal. Designed by architect Andre Soares, the basilica features a grand facade and interior adorned with elegant 19th-century design elements. The church is flanked by two bell towers and houses four granite statues representing biblical figures. Visitors are drawn to the impressive staircase and are encouraged to wait at the top to hear the bells ring.
This is a grand basilica that harmoniously blends Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical styles. Construction began in 1703 and the church was consecrated in 1717, though it was completed over the course of the 18th and 20th centuries. The architectural design was led by André Soares. The façade features two bell towers and an elegant arched entrance — one of the towers was only completed in 1964. Notably, the other tower suffered damage around 1944 due to a collision with a small aircraft. Historically, the building also served as a convent and school for the Oratorianos (Oratorian order).

Capela de S. Frutuoso, located in Braga, Portugal, is a remarkable historical site with a rich past dating back to the sixth century AD. This makes it the oldest church in Portugal that has retained its original structure. The chapel was initially built by the Visigoth kingdom and later incorporated into the 17th-century convent of Sao Francisco as a connected chapel. Despite its age, the plain stone exterior and Greek cross pattern of this tiny church still stand today.
Such interesting historical place! The oldest Christian chapel (from 7th century) in Portugal is hidden next to main church. Place without tourist, we were here almost alone. I appreciate free toalets, it was wery welcome far in outskirt of Braga.

This is a wonderful church on the outskirts of Braga. As opposed to Bom Jesus, there was no one around when I visited and it seemed like I walked through a housing estate to get there. I would advise you to follow the road signs to the place rather than use Google Maps. The Capela de São Frutuoso is also known as the Capela de São Frutuoso de Montélios and is a pre-Romanesque chapel that was originally built by the Visigoths.

São Frutuoso chapel, in Braga, the oldest church in Portugal retaining its original structure. It was built by St Frutuoso, Bishop of Braga, in the latter half of the 7th century as the church of São Salvador de Montélios, and remained relatively unchanged through the centuries. It was incorporated into the 17th century convent of São Francisco as a chapel connected to the main church. It's a tiny church on the Greek cross pattern with an interior dome. It bears a resemblance to the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna and may have been intended as the tomb of St Frutuoso.

(Translated by Google) It has only been open for a short time, and it is difficult to find the entrance because it is not marked. After asking at the museum next door, we discovered that we had to ring the bell and ask to visit. The cleaning lady took us there to visit and after 2 minutes we were already out of the space because she sent us away immediately... she didn't talk about the space or anything. I'm sorry that the tour is not being conducted by someone with a greater interest in the subject. I can't show any photos because the two I took on polaroids were poorly lit. Given the short time I was there, I must say that the best time to take photos would be in the summer, because the chapel of S. Pedro and S. Paulo is in front of the window and casts shade over this space.

(Translated by Google) An extraordinary place, uniquely integrated into an old seminary in the centre of Braga. The space invites you to linger and reflect, but also to wander around and discover the connection between the outside and the inside of the surroundings. The structure is built entirely of wood, without the use of nails or screws. You can only visit it on Fridays. (Original) Um lugar extraordinário, integrado de forma singular num antigo seminário no centro de Braga. O espaço convida à permanência e reflexão, mas também ao deambular na descoberta da articulação entre o exterior e o interior da envolvente. (Translated by Google) A very special place. Theologically well-thought-out, aesthetically fascinating design. Because it is part of a seminary, it is not open to the public. But if you manage to gain access, a space for spiritual experiences opens up. This chapel conveys a sense of security and shows how beautiful modern art and architecture can be. (Original) Ein ganz besonderer Ort. Theologisch durchdachte, ästhetisch faszinierende Gestaltung. Da Teil eines Priesterseminars, nicht öffentlich zugänglich. I highly recommend a visit, which should be booked in advance as the Chapel is located in a space closed to the public. (Original) Local que convida à introspeção, onde tudo tem um significado! Braga has a bimillennial history that began in Ancient Rome, when it was founded in 16 B.C. It was nicknamed Bracara Augusta in honor of the Roman emperor Augustus and was one of the most important cities of the time. To relive this part of history, there is an annual event in Braga that takes us back to the past. It's called "Braga Romana" and takes place at the end of May. For 5 days, the people of Braga dress up and the city gathers events, parades, demonstrations, and the famous stalls with handmade products and food that goes back to that time.
