Architectural Buildings
Palacio Salvo is one of the tallest landmarks in the country and houses the Tango Museum, offices, and residences. It's located near Mercado del Puerto, a lively area filled with local cuisine and live music. Other recommended stops in the city include Palacio Legislativo, Teatro Solis, and Fortaleza for stunning views of the city. The gothic-style building was constructed by an Italian immigrant and opened in 1928.
Palacio Salvo is an iconic landmark in Montevideo and a must-visit destination for anyone interested in exploring the rich history of the city. This historic building not only offers incredible architecture but also provides one of the best views of Montevideo from its rooftop. The experience of seeing the city from such a high vantage point is truly breathtaking. The building organizes guided tours during the day, each lasting around 45 minutes. Some tours are conducted in English, which is convenient for international visitors. However, tickets for these tours are only available in person, so you’ll need to show up to secure your spot. The tour takes you through the most significant floors of the building and ends with a visit to the rooftop, where the panoramic views are worth every moment. One of the highlights of the tour is the Tango Museum located inside Palacio Salvo. It's fascinating to delve into the history of tango music and its cultural significance in the region. The museum adds an extra layer of depth to the visit, making it both educational and entertaining. Overall, Palacio Salvo is a historical gem that combines stunning architecture, cultural enrichment, and spectacular views. It’s an experience that captures the essence of Montevideo and is highly recommended for history and culture enthusiasts alike.

Another beautiful building where you can also rent flats. I had a great time visiting this building! It has some stunning views over montevideo!
Isabela — Google review
It was once the tallest building in South Americ👏👏👏, taller by 5 meters than its “twin”, Palacio Barolo, in Buenos Aires. Palacio Salvo is Montevideo’s most iconic architecture. *** It’s an Eclectic-Art Nouveau architecture, a style popularized in late 1900s to the turn of the 20th century. *** Eclectic architecture, while it has reminiscences of Renaissance, Gothic and Neoclassical, none of “typical” features of those architectures readily seen in Eclecticism. *** There’s a lot of curves, like petals of flower. The style is one that conveys flow and movement/motion rather than rigid lines and angular corners. As “twins”, built by the same Italian architect Mario Palanti, they were supposedly to “connect” Buenos Aires and Montevideo through their beacons at the tips of the buildings….BUT Alas the light beacons have never connected due to optic miscalculations.

Did the guided tour of the building, it was very unique and interesting learning about the history of it and why they changed from a hotel and modified other features. The tour also includes a room dedicated to the history of the famous tango song. Great way to spend 45 minutes of your time in the city.
Jozef W — Google review
It's impossible not to notice Palacio Salvo. I first noticed it by sitting on the top open deck of Montevideo's Historic bus route. On another day, I took the tour inside the building ( Tango museum is included ) The day was clear and I was able to see the cruise ship at the port and other buildings from the 23 floor. Good place to stay when visiting as a tourist. It might be pretty dated, but it's iconic and has good tours.

Not accessible for wheelchairs! This building is really stunning - not only for its history and the one of the idea givers but also for its present-day use! Our two guides, Emily and Fausto were passionate and knowledgeable and applied most of the guiding skills I'm looking for in a guide. My compliments. They also answered questions and took good care of the participants. The ride in the historic elevator is a treat and the view from the roof is even more so. Watch out for tours in the evening. There are special ones with a drink for sunset...
Sarah J — Google review
Beautiful exterior architecture, but the entry fee for both the Edificio Palacio Salvo and the Tango Museum are $550 UYU pesos which is very expensive compared to other museums in the area, so decided not to go in. There is a view from the top included in the price.

Church
Nestled in the heart of Ciudad Vieja, the Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral stands as a stunning testament to neoclassical architecture and rich history. Established in 1790 on the site of an earlier parish church, this magnificent Roman Catholic cathedral serves as the spiritual hub for Montevideo's Catholic community. With its striking twin bell towers and grand central dome, it captures the essence of colonial elegance.
It's the most beautiful church I've ever been to in my entire life. It's spectacular. Lots of works of art in sculpture.

The principal cathedral for the City of Montevideo — a beautiful and serene place for contemplation, prayer and worship. Accessible from the Plaza de la Constitución (aka Plaza Matriz).

Entry Free of charge - donations welcome Since I love churches, this one has pleased my eye. The church was named "Matriz" antes. It's a Catholic church which deserves to be visited. Two things struck my mind: in front of one of the side altars a modern sculpture from presumably lasered glass was erected and second, in the main Altar area the Uruguayan Flag was shown alongside what I recognised as the Vatican flag.
Sarah J — Google review
Very nice cathedral in the city that is well maintained and impressive in it's architecture. Well worth the quick stop in just to see it.
Jozef W — Google review
Our second tour stop. The inside far outshone the inside with an impressive altar/centerpiece, ceiling and statuary. I was especially impressed by the monument with all of the figures (disciples?) carved on the outside.

Fortaleza del Cerro, also known as Fortress Hill, is a historic Spanish fortress located on the highest hill in Montevideo. Built in 1809 to defend against naval attacks, it now houses a military museum showcasing Uruguay's defense history. The fortress offers panoramic views of Montevideo Bay and features a 19th-century lighthouse.
Well worth the visit to this historic fortress, situated on a high hill overlooking Montevideo and the bay, canons pointed outwards. Tons of old guns, canons, mortars, swords, and other relics to see. Lots of information available about the history. Great place to take some photos, and a bit Montevideo sign right next to the fort. Cheap entry for just $2 USD, cash only.

Fortaleza del Cerro – Montevideo A must-visit when in Montevideo! Fortaleza del Cerro offers stunning panoramic views of the city and coastline—truly one of the best spots to take in the beauty of Uruguay’s capital. The historic fortress itself is impressive and filled with interesting military history and artifacts, giving you a glimpse into Uruguay's past. It's perched on the highest point in the city, so the vistas are absolutely worth the drive. Peaceful, scenic, and rich in history—a great spot for photos and reflection. Just be mindful of the area and go during daylight hours. Definitely recommend

Wonderful position with an open view on Montevideo, well organized museum with artifacts and explanations on Uruguay history. A must to visit, including the Cerro barrio and its riverside and Playa which I personally think are too underrated and not enough valued and promoted.

Art Museums
The Torres Garcia's Museum, located in Ciudad Vieja, is a tribute to the renowned Uruguayan artist Joaquin Torres Garcia. The museum showcases an impressive collection of his cubist paintings, sculptures, and workshops that offer insight into his profound influence on modernism. It appeals to art connoisseurs and history enthusiasts interested in delving into Uruguay's cultural heritage. Visitors are encouraged to take their time appreciating the intricate details and symbolism in Torres Garcia's artworks.
Nice museum which shows Joaquin Torres Garcia's history. You can see the artists' life through hiss paintings and studies. There are 5 floors: 5th and 4th floors show the students' work while the 3rd, 2nd and 1st floor shows Garcias' studies of art through his life from the Classical to the Universal Constructivism.
Rafael A — Google review
We did not have time to enter but we did see examples of the artists work on a nearby building across from the entrance. Our tout guide said that the artist was quite influential internationally. Not the style of art I appreciate though I am afraid. For fans of this work, the museum should definitely be on the visit list when in montevideo.
Graham T — Google review
An interesting museum showcasing works by Torres Garcia, a Uruguayan-Spanish artist, theorist, and author who made a large impact internationally. The museum consists of 4 floors that one can visit. He's known for toys that can be configured in multiple ways.
James — Google review
Nice museum with 3 floors but each fairly small. I was given a sheet of info in English which helped as no signs are in English. I paid 200 entry which I think was worth it for a short stop.
Holly N — Google review
I really enjoyed my time in this museum. This style is different from what I normally go for, but I have grown to like and appreciate it. Before coming here, I saw one piece in Bellas Artes museum in Buenos Aires. There are many interesting pieces of art and wooden toys. The building has a nice layout of 4 floors. The gift shop has a nice selection of items. I highly recommend.

The Museo Torres García is located in the historic Ciudad Vieja (Old Town) of Montevideo where unusual portraits of historical icons and cubist paintings akin to Picasso's paintings, painted by Joaquín Torres García are exhibited. The museum was established by Manolita Piña Torres, the widow of Torres Garcia after his death in 1949 who also set up the García Torres Foundation, a private non-profit organization which organizes the paintings, drawings, original writings, archives, objects and furniture designed by the painter as well as the photographs, magazines and publications related to him....

Museums
Nestled in the charming neighborhood of Prado, Museo Juan Manuel Blanes is a municipal art museum housed in a grand 1870 villa. It boasts an extensive collection of Uruguayan artworks spanning different eras. The museum pays homage to the renowned Uruguayan portrait artist and Realist painter, Juan Manuel Blanes, also known as the "Painter of the Homeland." Visitors can admire his significant works alongside pieces by other influential artists like Pedro Figari and Rafael Barradas.
A wonderful collection of the works of Juan Manuel Blanes, a self-taught Uruguayan painter born in a turbulent period of the country's history who left an indelible mark on art through his dedication to capturing the essence of South American history and gaucho life. Blanes, rooted in the formal academic style of 19th-century European painting, brought a uniquely American perspective to his work. His extensive documentation of major historical events in Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile, exemplified in monumental pieces like "The Battle of Caseros," showcased not only his commitment to historical accuracy but also his incorporation of human detail, influenced by the emerging naturalism of the 19th century. Beyond historical depictions, Blanes explored the romanticized world of gauchos, portraying their lives with an idealized lens. While striving for accuracy in his historical paintings, his gaucho images romanticized the independent, free-spirited lifestyle, often overlooking the harsh realities faced by these figures. Blanes' career unfolded across Montevideo, Buenos Aires, and Europe, with a notable stay in Chile in 1873. His legacy lives on in the dichotomy of his meticulously detailed historical narratives and the idealized, romanticized portrayals of gaucho life, making him a significant figure in the artistic tapestry of South America.

5 stars for the room with the Blanes paintings, amazing artist! Some very iconic paintings of the history of Uruguay. 1 star for the other art exhibits, not my style. The Japanese garden is located behind the museum and also worth a visit.
Garrett F — Google review
A fascinating place to visit! It was so interesting to see what used to be a hacienda-style home for Uruguay's wealthy families. The architecture and preserved rooms really take you back in time. I especially loved the peaceful courtyard with its beautiful fountain and koi fish—it was serene and lovely. The Japanese garden is also a nice surprise, offering a tranquil space to enjoy nature. During my visit, there was an impressive exhibition featuring Uruguayan women artists, which added a special cultural touch. A must-see museum if you're in Montevideo!

Palacio Legislativo, a neoclassical building that serves as the home of the Uruguayan parliament, is a symbol of national pride and democratic values. Declared a National Historic Monument in 1975, this monumental structure was inaugurated in 1925 to commemorate Uruguay's independence. The palace features luxurious offices and houses numerous masterpieces by renowned artists such as Pedro Blanes and Jose Luis Zorrilla.
A really beautiful and significant building, this palace really stands out in the city. You can see it from over a mile away due to the road being completely straight. It has some unique architectural features and really ornate top. You can get some lovely pictures when its quiet, as its set in an open area. Well worth a walk around.

It’s an iconic architecture NOT ONLY FOR URUGUAY (and Montevideo) BUT FOR THE REST OF THE WORLD… a Greco-Roman Eclectic architecture built at turn of 1900s. *** it is a UNIQUE edifice that has a Rectangular Skylight Well instead of the usual classic dome such as the Argentinian Congreso OR the USA Capitol Building.👏👏👏. Truly a remarkable building. It remains a functioning house of the LEGISLATIVE BRANCH of the Uruguayan Republic since 1925.

The English tour by Natalia was excellent! Great level of detail and interaction with persons from USA, MVD and China. We’ve recently been on other bldg tours in MVD and Buenos Aires. Their content was very limited in comparison! Plus the building is super detailed and in great shape. Some of the original ‘water glass’ is still in the windows. Amazing sculptures inside and out; unparalleled quality of stonework in several countries and you have to go into and or use the library there - such a warm welcoming place. Go! Just go. It’s only 3 dollars US or 140 pesos UY. Great Examples of: Stained glass Karyatids Woodwork Stonework Mosaics Plaster art (in light wells!) Metalworking Architectural details Paintings Bas relief Living example of good governance! Yay, Natalia! I only wish the people of USA would follow the ‘Pueblo Uruguayo’ and elect progressives and search for more peace!

While exploring inner part of the building we wanted to see the library which was upstairs. We asked the seguridad lady if we can enter and watch it and she directed us to go to the excursion. The price of it was 3$ per person but solo in cash and we didn’t have it, but the staff let us in for free. Then, we explore not only the library but congress halls and architecture with professional of his field, our guide. He spoke in 3 languages which was español, brasileño y inglés. He detailed the whole history that surrounded us inside. Muchas Gracias!
Mariа P — Google review
What an amazing building! From the outside it’s really impressing . But we’ve booked a guided tour and it was breathtaking beautiful. Our English speaking guide was absolutely brilliant. She showed us nearly every important part of the building. The great hall, the original constitution documents, the Library, both chambers of the parliament: the House of Commons and the chamber of Senators. She was able not only to describe all the exterior but also detailed information about the country’s political system. In one hour we got essential information about architecture, politics and arts in a most entertaining way. A clear must see for just 140 Peso .
Andreas R — Google review
The building is not magnificent, but it has its charm. Take into account that you must visit the place with a guided tour (they don’t let you go inside on your own, unless you go to the library). The guided tour lasts about 1:30 hours, which is perfect, as the guide (Ana, in my case) explained everything in detail. I must say that it was inspiring listening to her talking about democracy with so much passion. Don’t expect to go there waiting for an outstanding building. The right approach to this visit is to go there and try to understand why this small country is just the way it is.
Sebastián H — Google review
A beautiful parliament building inside and out. There is a very worthwhile tour for 140 pesos for tourists and free for locals. The building was built with beautiful local marble from local and Italian architects and craftsmen, it took 17 years to finish. Inside the most impressive hall, you will find the constitution and the declaration of independence. Our guide in English was with Mario and he was an amazing tour guide.

Museo Andes 1972 is a private museum that opened in 2013, dedicated to the tragic story of the 1972 Andes plane crash. The museum features exhibits that recount the details of the crash and pay tribute to its victims and survivors. It aims to raise awareness about this national tragedy and the struggle for survival in one of the world's tallest and coldest mountains.
Things to know: They only take cash for entry in person or you can buy in advance online with card. Very convenient, but know just incase you were wanting to pay with card at entry. We really found this museum very interesting! We knew of the story of this accident but didn’t have any details. Recommend! We enjoyed learning more about the story of these brave kids who went through something so tragic and the museum is done in a very respectful way.

This place is awesome, such a beautiful tribute to those who died and a string reminder of the human spirt. Felt immersed in the events of 1972 and would highly recommend
Alex D — Google review
A museum tribute to those who perished and those who survived an unimaginable catastrophe of Uruguayan Air Force flight 571 in 1972. With 40 passengers (Uruguayan rugby team and their families/friends) and 5 crew on board, the world have thought they all perished in a crash in the Andes at the border of Chile and Western Argentina. But after 79 days, two survivors surfaced miraculously in a Chilean town alerting international rescue. In all, 16 survivors were rescued. *** As such, the museum is an implicit exultation of the human will to survive against all odds. *** It is also a tribute to leadership that ensured survival of those lived through the initial catastrophic crash. The three men (Señores Parrado, Canessa and Vizintin) showed extraordinary valor to organize the survivors and head for an expedition of unknown outcome… but headed on for everyone’s sake…👏👏👏.

Amazing insight into the most awful tragedy. There was English translation throughout (don’t take that for granted in South America!) Museum was at over three small floors and included clean toilets. There was a ‘cold’ simulator but sadly this wasn’t working when we were there. Could have spent longer here as so interesting but it was end of day and hot (we were getting thirsty!)

Great experience, super passionate host that helps you understand the challenges the group faced. Cool new exhibit where you get to experience the -18 temperatures on top of the Andes. Pay with cash.
Morgan B — Google review
What an incredible museum. They’ve balanced it so well to not only highlight what the survivors went through and their stories, but also to pay equal respect to those that didn’t survive. I’d recommend this museum to everyone who has the opportunity to visit. I noticed previous reviews mentioned that payment was only cash or pre purchased online tickets but that has since changed. It is now cash or they have a QR code where you can pay via PayPal on arrival.

What a fantastic museum. Such a tragic event which turned into a story of bravery and perseverance against the most difficult of odds. The owners have done an incredible job of telling the story through videos, interactive displays and historic memorabilia. They also speak about it with such respect and passion. If you're in montevideo you should definitely visit!

José Gervasio Artigas, national hero and revered Father of the Nationhood of Uruguay🇺🇾🇺🇾🇺🇾. He was deeply involved in liberation of Uruguay during the Wars of Independence from Spain that even Argentina made him an ally for their own independence as well. In fact, he fought with them in the May Revolution of 1810 that led to Argentina’s independence in 1816. Artigas’ fight for Uruguay was a little more complicated. He and his compatriots have succeeded against Spain for most Uruguay except for Montevideo which was invaded by the United Kingdoms of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves in 1816. By 1820, his forces had suffered great losses leading to his capture and banishment to Paraguay. Uruguayan patriots continued the fight, ultimately succeeding and Uruguay became independent in 1828. Artigas remained exiled until his death in 1850. His remains were repatriated in 1850 to a Montevideo Cemetery. In 1977, his mausoleum, underneath his equestrian statue, was finally completed and he finally rested their. ARTIGAS HAS LASTING LEGACY AS A SOLDIER AND STATESMAN. As a statesman, he is a staunch democrat and federalist, opposing monarchism and centralism (the 4 principles of ARTIGUISM)👏👏👏👏 *** He is enshrined with his monuments in many countries around the world including Argentina, Paraguay, Mexico, Greece, Ecuador, Romania, Bulgaria, India, and the USA (DC, NYC, NJ, MN).

This place is amazing. The guided tour is so informative. Our tour guide is bilingual, which is great for none Spanish speakers. All the staff are really friendly and create a great atmosphere. The building is so beautiful and mystical, with many surprises. After the tour finished, I was able to walk around and take photos. I highly recommend that everyone visit this Castillo, you won't be disappointed.

The architecture is not as great as the story of the man who created the building. The guide knows a lot and seems really friendly, but he spends way too much time talking about symbols. Yes, there’re symbols everywhere, but there’s no need to pay attention to all of them. Unfortunately, the building is only partially restored and there are many parts that need a lot of work yet. I imagine that visiting this building can be a nice thing for architects, but for most of us the most interesting part is the story behind it.

Palacio Taranco, situated in the Ciudad Vieja district, is a 20th-century French-style palace that was once a private residence and now serves as the Museum of Decorative Arts. Originally built by the wealthy Taranco family, it stands on the site of the colonial Casa de Comedias and showcases opulence from the Belle Epoque era.
Beautiful objects and architectural elements in this luxurious European style mansion with three VERY grand pianos. Two rooms were a gallery exhibiting temporary Uruguayan design. Also not to be missed is the original house kitchen. Enter through the formal lush garden court in front. 👍 Free entrance 👍

My Visit to Palacio Taranco – A Hidden Gem in Montevideo During my recent trip to Montevideo, I had the chance to visit Palacio Taranco, just a 5-minute walk from the port terminal. To my delight, entry was completely free for tourists. The moment I stepped inside, I was astonished by the architecture, which still holds the essence of colonial artistry. The intricate woodwork and carvings throughout the palace are a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship of the past—each detail felt like a trophy preserved through centuries. The garden was in full bloom with orchids, and the gentle chirping of little birds added a layer of serenity that made the entire experience feel like stepping into another era. Inside the villa, the artifacts are nothing short of majestic—each one a monument to history, luxury, and royalty. From the elegant furniture to the preserved artworks and décor, everything tells a story of refinement and cultural richness. I absolutely loved this place, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone visiting Montevideo. Whether you're into history, architecture, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, Palacio Taranco offers it all.

An historic mansion originally designed by French architects for the Ortiz de Taranco family (ca 1907-1910). Acquired in 1943 by the Government of Uruguay in order to establish a museum for decorative arts, the site is a designated National Historic Landmark. The building is an example of Belle Epoch architecture, and in addition to sumptuous rooms has a beautiful garden. Having visited the place many times over the past 40 years, I am especially partial to the garden. For physically handicapped, enter through the front gate and garden — there is a ramp that will lead to the ground floor. Unfortunately there is no elevator; so upper floors are not handicapped accessible.

Palacio Taranco The Museum of Decorative Arts was created in 1972 and is located in the Taranco Palace, in Montevideo's Old City. Construction on the current house began in 1908 by French architects Charles-Louis Girault and Jules-Léon Chifflot. It features an exceptional garden space that serves as a link between the building and the public space.

Amazing old house / palace turned museum! Definitely worth a visit. On the dias del patrimonio it opens for free to the public, not sure of price on other days. There’s an indigenous museum in the basement which is less great in my opinion, as the collection is quite small. But the main and top floors of the house are gorgeous, very elaborately decorated, including three antique pianos. Patio is beautiful as well.

This beach is very beautiful and clean, which cannot be said about the water. I had no desire to swim in this brown water. In addition, in Montevideo there are constant cool winds (even in summer) and if you come out of the water wet, you will be cold. I advise you to take a large towel to wrap yourself up well. In the evening you can meet many beautiful girls and guys walking along the Rambla

It’s quite a big market with a large variety of shops, not just agricultural shops. You can still buy agricultural products like fruit, veg and meat there, but they also have clothing, toy and other stores. There is a nice food court and coffee shops to sit.

It is a nice place with some fruit & vegetable stores, and many other stores. It leaves an impression of a big supermarket more than an agricultural market. Also, the fruits on the street and small fruit stores are better and cheaper than here. We were planning to see a real market and buy some fruits, but end up coming out empty handed.

Fans of the American actress Mae West (“Too much of a good thing is…terrific!”) will find this revitalized historic marketplace to be a spectacle worth a visit (at least once). Uruguay has come a long way since being a relatively poor country in the 1980’s, witness this palace of contemporary consumption. There are a variety of stores, places to eat, bars and places to hang out. Prior to its rebirth as an urban shopping venue, it was a collection point for farm produce. I remember being able to drive into the building, where there were stacks of fruit and vegetable crates. Now you can buy US$1500 per bottle wines at Iber if you have bank. Nice meat market and “chicken boutique” (I’m not kidding!). Have a chivito in the food court and top it off with an ice cream sundae! The neighborhood of the market has also been upgraded, though it retains a bit of the urban grit that characterized its now distant past. Convenient parking out front but bring some small bills to tip the attendants. Les Halles in Paris are long gone, but Mercado Agricola still lives.
Paul N — Google review
A really nice market and place to go try new food, buy your groceries for the day, fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry and so much more. There are mini-markets, a pharmacy, two nice coffee shops, various fast food places, pizza places and a whole bunch of other choices for your lunch or dinner. Is also a nice place to visit for a while, it’s big and spacious. It has a place for kids, however it’s not the best place to bring kids specifically, it’s more of a family plan. The only downside is that it is a noisy place when it’s crowded, acoustics don’t help the space when there too many people talking together.
Emilia G — Google review

A functioning, small lighthouse. The place is too small to get here specially, but if you are walking somewhere nearby, it is worth stopping by to see the views of the bay from the lighthouse. The only downside is that it is often very windy at the top, it is better to be warmly dressed. Also, there are nice and friendly people working here who are ready to tell stories about this place. Not far from the lighthouse, we saw a whole flock of parrots. It costs 35 ur. pesos.

🗼 Punta Carretas Lighthouse – Montevideo’s Southern Light Located on the rocky edge of Punta Brava, the Punta Carretas Lighthouse (Faro de Punta Brava) has been watching over Montevideo’s southern coast since 1876. This elegant cylindrical tower of carved stone rises 21 meters above the sea, serving both as a historical monument and an active aid to navigation. Originally built to guide ships through a treacherous stretch of coastline, the lighthouse was electrified in 1962, though its current light pattern — a flash every 10 seconds, alternating between white and red — was already established in 1948. The signal helps vessels safely reach Banco Inglés, Puerto del Buceo, and the Santa Lucía River. Today, the lighthouse is still in full operation, maintained by Uruguay’s maritime authorities. It is considered a National Historical Monument, not only for its utility, but for its role in shaping Montevideo’s maritime identity. 🧭 Cultural and Symbolic Context Punta Carretas was once called "Punta Brava" for a reason: rocky, unlit, and dangerous. The lighthouse gave the area a new life, a new identity — and eventually, its name. From the early 20th century, the neighborhood began to grow around this signal of safety. More than a navigational tool, the lighthouse became a symbol of the city’s relationship with the sea — a place where nature, architecture, and urban rhythm meet. On windy days or during sunsets, locals and travelers come here for peace, views, and photographs. 🛠 Architectural and Technical Details Height of tower: 21 m (69 ft) Construction: masonry tower with a rectangular white keeper's house Material: local stone, red and white painted iron lantern Lighting pattern: alternating red and white flashes every 10 seconds Range of light: approximately 15 nautical miles (~28 km) Operational status: Active (as of 2024) Electricity installed: 1962 The narrow spiral staircase inside the tower leads to a circular gallery, from where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the city skyline, Río de la Plata, and migratory seabirds. ✅ Visitor Information General access: Free and open-air. The lighthouse itself is accessible on foot from the Rambla. Tower entry: Occasionally open to the public; modest fee (under 50 UYU) may apply. Best time to visit: Late afternoon to sunset — for golden light and seabird spotting. Accessibility: The base is accessible via paved footpaths, but the tower climb requires physical mobility. Getting there: 15–20 min walk from Punta Carretas Shopping or Parque Rodó via Rambla Gandhi. Whether you're a lover of lighthouses, a photographer, a walker, or someone who enjoys peaceful moments by the water, the Punta Carretas Lighthouse is a must-see stop. It combines history, architecture, and the unique geography of Montevideo’s southernmost point — a quiet icon that still watches over the sea.
Maria K — Google review
The Punta Carretas Lighthouse in Montevideo is a charming coastal landmark that combines history, beauty, and stunning views. Built in the 19th century, it has guided ships safely along the Uruguayan coast for generations. The lighthouse sits on a rocky point where the Río de la Plata meets the Atlantic, creating a picturesque setting that is especially beautiful at sunset. Visitors can climb to the top for panoramic views of the coastline, the ocean, and the city in the distance—a perfect spot for photography and quiet reflection. The surrounding area of Punta Carretas is also pleasant to explore, with coastal paths and nearby cafes that make for a relaxing visit. While the lighthouse itself is relatively small, its historic charm and breathtaking location make it a highlight for anyone traveling to Montevideo. It’s a peaceful yet inspiring stop that captures both the maritime heritage and natural beauty of Uruguay.

The Museo del Carnaval in Montevideo is a vibrant museum showcasing the annual carnival with its extravagant costumes, masks, and open-air stage. It offers a comprehensive overview of the colorful event, featuring past parade floats, costumes, and an evocative photographic exhibition documenting the evolution of celebrations. The museum provides insight into Uruguay's capital city's 40-day-long carnival celebration with drum troupes, samba dancing, and murgas across 16 neighborhoods.
Small and simple museum that reviews the interesting history of the Carnival in Montevideo. There is also a section dedicated to Carlos Paez Vilaró and the influence of the carnival and its culture in his works of art.

Unassuming entrance with displays and information on the history and story of Carnaval in Montevideo. There are guides in 4 languages at the entry desk and it is a nominal entrance fee ($150 or about 4USD). Most of the museum is in Spanish with maybe a quarter to a third also having English. Good place to see traditional costumes and see some film of performances. There is a stage and seating in the back where performances can be held. Was here on Ash Wednesday so they were presumably closing up that portion for the season.

A fun museum to visit and learn about the history of Carnaval and see the different costumes throughout history. For 150 UYU, it's well worth the price. Be forewarned that all the signage is in Spanish and compared to other museums, it's on the smaller side.

The Museo Histórico Cabildo de Montevideo is a significant historical site located in the heart of Montevideo, Uruguay. Housed in an early 1800s colonial government building, it showcases city archives and historical artifacts. The iconic neo-classical structure features beautiful Doric and Ionic columns and holds great historical importance as the place where the first constitution of the Republic of Uruguay was promulgated in 1830.
Very nice building of the old town hall, with the spirit of the colonial times. The museum itself is pretty small, but gives some idea about the history of Montevideo. Admission free.

Former government building holding historical city artifacts including the original Act of Independence and the desk where it was signed. There's not that many exhibits nor signage, but it is a cool place to visit.

An interesting museum with a collection of both historical and contemporary art and artifacts. It has free entry a wide open spaces with a variety of collections.

Beautiful old town hall with a museum of the history of the city. Felt like the museum could be improved, not a lot of displays for the size of the building. Free entrance and only Spanish descriptions.

This is a nice, quick way to get familiar with Uruguay’s history. The visit was fee of charge. I got some cool facts from a crew guy I randomly asked a question to about an old painting. The crew wouldn’t volunteer information, but if you ask, they help.

Free to enter. When I was there the cafe wasn't open (it was pouring with rain which may have been relevant as the cafe is in the courtyard) but the cakes in the display cabinet looked good. There was a large school group visiting (the building is big enough that the school group wasn't an issue). There are various exhibitions with information boards in Spanish, for example, one about women's fashion and it's signifance.

Nestled in the heart of Montevideo's Old City, Fuente De La Plaza Matriz is a stunning architectural gem that draws visitors with its classic design and intricate sculptural details. As you stroll along the pedestrian Sarandi, you'll find this beautiful fountain surrounded by lush trees that offer a refreshing shade on sunny days. The square itself buzzes with life, featuring outdoor dining options where you can savor local cuisine while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere.
On July 18, 1871, a marble fountain was inaugurated in Montevideo in the Plaza de la Constitución, coinciding with the start-up of drinking water services to the city. This project was managed by a private company that had the concession for the supply of water to the city, and the construction of the fountain was a condition established in the clauses of the contract. The fountain was built by Italian sculptor Juan Ferrari in 1871, under the initiative of alchemist and businessman Francisco Piria. This work not only celebrates the introduction of drinking water in Montevideo, but also stands as an artistic monument and a significant historical symbol for the city. The fountain also features seven legends in relief marble and a granite plaque with commemorative inscriptions, among which the following stand out: «August 25, 1825/The Eastern Republic of Uruguay/declares itself free and independent» «July 18, 1830 / Oath of the Constitution» «Governmental sanction/ December 4, 1867» «Businessmen/ Ambrosio Plácido Lezica/Lanús Brothers/Enrique Fynn» «Legislative Sanction/April 29, 1868» «Company Engineer/Federico Newman» «April 19, 1825 / Cry of Freedom given by the 33 Orientals»

(Translated by Google) It's a small square but quite peaceful and relaxing. The most striking feature is the fountain, which has some minor damage from the passage of time but retains its beauty. There are plenty of nearby activities, such as museums and shops, making it a nice place to sit and rest after a bit of sightseeing. A little more vegetation would make it more pleasant, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's a nice place. (Original) Es una plaza pequeña pero bastante trabquila y relajante. Nestled in the vibrant Parque Rodo quarter, the National Museum of Visual Arts has been a cultural gem since its establishment in 1911. This museum showcases an extensive collection of Uruguayan visual art, featuring renowned artists like Pedro Figari and Juan Manuel Blanes. Visitors can explore various exhibition halls that host both national and international displays throughout the year. Additionally, the museum boasts an impressive art library with over 7,000 volumes, attracting scholars from around the world.
I had a wonderful experience at the National Museum of Visual Arts. I really appreciated the thoughtful connection between modern and traditional art, showcasing works from some of Uruguay’s most famous artists. The museum is well-maintained, and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. As the daughter of a renowned artist, I was especially excited to share the photos I took with my mother, and she absolutely loved them! It made me wonder if the museum accepts works from international artists. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Montevideo who enjoys art and wants to explore Uruguay’s rich artistic heritage. It’s truly a gem!

Beautiful sculpture garden with a cafe right out front of the building. The collection ranges from sculptures, to paintings and video installations. Each section of the museum was incredibly well curated with themes and media. Great mix of classic works and contemporary. I noticed a new exhibition was being installed when I visited and that tells me they rotate their exhibitions greatly leaving the visitor/ viewer with something new to come back and experience. Highly recommended on a nice day and even a rainy one . :)

A very simple rectangular floor plate with a mezzanine level, plus ancillary spaces that accommodate both the permanent collection and special exhibits. The important thing is one can easily view the artwork with proper illumination. The museum grounds are beautiful and tranquil. A coffee pavilion (operated by The Lab) offers excellent coffee and bakery items, with ample outdoor seating in the museum garden. Almost handicapped accessible — the exterior ramps do not provide flawless access for wheelchairs; but once inside everything is good.

Nestled within the stunning 19th-century Palacio Heber Jackson, the Museo del Gaucho and Currency offers a captivating glimpse into the life of South America's iconic gauchos. This museum beautifully illustrates their profound bond with horses and showcases an array of artifacts that reflect their rich traditions. Visitors can admire exquisite collections featuring traditional clothing, intricate horse gear, and ornate silver spurs alongside handmade leather items. The museum also houses a fascinating section dedicated to currency and accounting history on another floor.
Museum in opulent 19th-century mansion, with statues, art, furniture & displays on ranching life. The South American cowboy, or “gaucho” is the focus of one collection at this museum, and the other depicts the history of Uruguay’s currency. This modest museum is housed in a marble showcase with incredible archetectural features. I can't add enough pictures to do it justice. Brought over as ballast these remarkable buildings are the true history of Montevideo. The Gaucho museum houses remnants of the legacy of Uruguayans. The craftsmanship, no - artisanship of a bolo, a knife, mere horse tact meticulously adorned into objects of fine art is unmatched. These physcial objects of the people's lives, carefully placed, and left to light their lives again as you pass by. Stop, reflect and appreciate this once awesome way of life.

We came across the Museo del Gaucho y de la Moneda by accident, while out on our own walking tour of Montevideo, and it was an interesting and enjoyable visit. We were welcomed by the staff and encouraged to explore the many exhibits, which describe the lifestyle and legacy of the South American gauchos, and we were particularly impressed by the level of detail provided, including the expansive collections of horse gear. Housed in the head office of the Banco República, the museum also has a substantial section detailing the development of currency units in Uruguay. It’s an eclectic space that offers a unique glimpse of Uruguay’s rich history.
Path F — Google review
A museum primarily about the culture and history of gauchos seems incongruous inside the magnificent neoclassical bank main hall, but who cares!? Free. Friendly staff. Nice bathrooms. And it made me curious to learn more.
James L — Google review
Excellent presentation of the history of gauchos in Uruguay, paired with another museum within a museum of Uruguay’s historical currency and coinage. The main banking hall of the Banco de la República del Uruguay (BROU) has been transformed into a delightful series of galleries depicting various aspects of Uruguay’s iconic gauchos, their history and culture. Cleverly, the old teller stations within the banking hall contain the museum’s coinage and currency exhibits — So the two museum collections are kept separated physically and visually, while sharing the one large hall. For the physically handicapped: A handicapped accessible ramp is located on Zabala (the bank staff entrance) — you will need to identify yourself as a visitor to the Museum and security will call a staff member to escort you to the museum hall. Handicapped visitors are encouraged to call ahead of time or make an on-line reservation so that a staff member is available and able to assist you as needed.

I liked what they had to show but it feels like the displays and exhibits could be expanded as well as a greater amount of indigenous art. It’s free entry and worth the visit! Temporary collections were interesting also concerning the carnival

MAPI is an important and often overlooked museum in the Ciudad Vieja — While its permanent collection of pre-Colombian artifacts on the ground floor are limited, the second level hosts a permanent installation of indigenous masks from 21 Latin American countries. It is one of the world’s best and unique collections of masks from Latin America on exhibit anywhere. More than worth a visit! Re: practicalities — the museum is accessible; has clean bathrooms and a beautiful but ancient elevator. For non-Uruguayans: there is an admission ticket machine to your left as you enter. For Uruguayan citizens entry to national museums are free with your CI. The reception desk is to your right as you enter. Also there is a museum cafe; entrance by reception desk.

The museum's architecture is really nice it is antique. However, the building is falling apart. The exhibition is limited, and there is not enough information about what is being exhibited. The building is being rebuilt and fixed. It does not worth the price, 200 pesos.

On Monday the museum is free for entry. It has a beautiful exhibit of carnival masks, and the tile floor and the building itself are worth the visit to see it.
Ross M — Google review
A wonderful building, some nice examples of precolumbian art and artifacts (very few of them outstanding) and a couple of rooms (strangely unmarked and often so hidden that it almost seems like they aren't supposed to be found) with curiously random exhibitions, some of which may have their appeal. Absurdly high entry fee for what you get; especially the archaeological exhibits are ridiculously underdocumented, there seems to be next to no clear concept to the collections/exhibition. In museological terms, this is a disappointment. And it does get VERY hot.
Lorenz W — Google review
Very disappointing. I don't think I've ever given one star to a museum before. The exhibition, if that's the right word, is organised across three floors. But alot of the exhibition spaces are EMPTY, presumably being refurbished. The carnival exhibits there, well go to the "Carnival Museum" instead. You'll see much better there. Also there is almost no English descriptions of the items display. Don't waste U$130 coming here, go to the "Carnival Museum" (near the dockside) instead.

One of the dumbest security rules i ever seen, like they take from you minor thing i understand lighters knives and dangerous things are prohibited but taking an expensive perfume that it is 150ml from me and throwing it its ridiculously stupid no airport does this? The problem after you pass the security you can buy even 300ml perfumes and take them with you to airplane, so what's the point of these stupid rules and the dumb security they apply the rules blindly Even in USA airports, the most strict security they dont do stupid rules like these then when i try to explain to him he says these Uruguay? Are you really proud of stupidity? Im pretty sure Uruguayans are not happy with these rules either. Many people told me about how bad the Uruguay airport is. Free, well presented natural history of Uruguay in Spanish and English. Loves the egg collection. How did the Doesicurus die off? That animal was impressive. Museum is in the lobby /entrance to a former prison. Moving history of The Disappeared from 1960s/70s in included on the left. To set expectations. This is a very small museum. There are two rooms and a hallway and that covers the entire museum. We didn’t have any expectations so we were not disappointed as some of the other reviews said, we had no wait and were the only people visiting at the time. There’s an expansion happening to the museum and about 80% of the building is under construction. Recommendation would be to go only if there’s no wait and know there’s a very limited number of items on display. Entry Fee: $0

There is a large collection of historic paintings and portraits, as well as various objects (eg, swords, old guns, uniforms, etc). As someone without any knowledge of Uruguayan history or key figures it was interesting, but the collections are not sufficiently curated to even come away with a rudimentary time line.

Rather than accept the 200 peso bill in my pocket, they required I connect to the internet, create an account, upload passport information (which is none of their business), and purchase the ticket through my new account. I tried my hardest because I wanted to see it. However, the website was garbage and would not accept my card. After 20+ minutes of playing this game I gave up and left. We only have so much time in the city and couldn’t afford to waste it. Very disappointed.

We then downloaded the app and still could not buy a ticket. We ended up leaving and not visiting the museum even though we had the pesos to pay to enter the museum. The process is not efficient and very disappointing.

The museum has an interesting collection of stuff pertaining to Uruguayan history. I particularly liked the paintings of historical events and battles. However, the items are not organized very well and the only context is some very long tedious Spanish explanations. (My Spanish is near fluent but these were hard to read.) But this is a worthwhile place to visit if you enjoy paintings of historical events.

I won 8000 and the machine ate them all in a second, a fiasco. DO NOT GO, play the cardboard lottery at home. (Translated by Google) Very loose. Luckily I went because it was nearby and not because I really wanted to visit it. The museum is nothing more than a collection of glasses, of all sizes and colors, that Nacional has won throughout its history. The worst thing is that the windows are so dirty that it is difficult to see many things. The glasses are very tightly packed together, which gives the impression that none of them are important. I would tell you that if you want to know something about the history of Nacional, it is best to take a guided tour, where you will see much more historical material about the club. (Original) Muy flojo. Menos mal que fui porque andaba cerca y no porque realmente quería visitarlo. The Gateway of the Citadel, also known as 'Puerta de la Ciudadela,' is a significant historical landmark in Montevideo, Uruguay. Dating back to the 18th century, it was originally part of the city's defensive fortifications and served as the main entrance to the walled city.
The remainder of the portal of what once the walled Ciudad Vieja 😎😎😎. Today, it’s the “Arch of the Plaza Independencia” a rather poetic entry into a very historical place in Montevideo.

I liked the fact that after some other locations the gate finally was reconstructed here, only a few steps away from its original place. I also understand why one had to reinforce its stand-alone situation with a wall. What I don't understand is, why it was turned around as it's now rather giving exit from the Old Town instead of leading into it. Maybe because of the nicer view over the Independence Square to the Salvo.

I walked to a square called Constitution Square, visited a beautiful church, and continued walking to a place called the Prado Museum. 🏛️🏛️🏛️🏛️🏛️ It is a HISTORICAL SQUARE, THE OLDEST PARK OS MONTEVIDEO founded 1726, two years after the founding of the city. It was the center of community life of the city. Then in 1851, the park had a face lift with the planting of trees and design of footpaths. Construction of a pipeline to pump water from Santa Lucia and building followed in 1868. In 1871, water appeared in the park and was inaugurated that year. The fountain is a beautiful functional structure. There are 3 tiers of basin, each with carved griffins. 🏛️ The central post has emblazoned several symbols including the National Coat of Arms of Uruguay. 🏛️🏛️🏛️ The sides of main basin are important dates about history of Uruguay like the date of the ratification of the constitution and date of the Declaration of Independence of the Republica Oriental del Uruguay.

The museum LA CUMPARSITA Dinner & Tango Show is a great place to learn about tango. There are exhibits with photos, videos, and other artifacts from the history of tango. The dinner show features dancers performing traditional Argentine dances like the milonga and the pasodoble.
You can't go inside unless you have a tour of Palacio Salvo. The Museo Del Tango itself is basically just one and a half rooms. It's very small. It's merely there to serve as a tribute to what was there before the palace was built. So don't expect anything huge or grand. It's a token and just part of the palace tour.
Ice W — Google review
Tango developed in Argentina and Uruguay around the same time, but the 1917 tango La Cumparsita became the most famous tango created, and it was composed in a building that predated the Salvo Palace. The small museum provides great insight into the history and culture of tango. Note that one can only visit the museum through a guided tour of Palacio Salvo

Visiting the musium is allowed only for 20 min and inside of it there was only one small room to see. The staff said in the tour English is spoken so I took it. The staff gave me a little explanation of the tango history but she did not speak English well and also didn't have experience of tango dance. For me it's like a joke. I was so disappointed because the musium was the reason why I went to monte video. Not much to see, not much to know, no worth visiting here.

This is actually the museum of La Cumparista. Before Palacio Salvo was built, the original site was a local music bar. The author of La Cumparista was Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, who played his music here in this bar for the first time. La Cumparista has been the symbol of tango since then. Back then there was no woman allowed in the bar. The name originates from Spanish word comparisa. -sta means small. It should be Comparista. But he wrote it as Cumparista. This is probably due to the Cocoliche language, a mixture of Spanish and Italian. Anyway this is a good museum to visit.

This museum is a gem and an interesting look at the creative process. Figari, a writer and lawyer, started his painting career at the age of 60! It was fascinating to read about his son's role in his life; the son died so young and was himself a gifted artist. I loved the display of old paint tubes. When I visited, the second floor was devoted to the winner of a prize named after Figari. I liked her work a lot, which included not only paintings and drawings but also multimedia work and even illustrations for book and album covers: a unique window into Uruguay's rich culture. The staff was friendly, welcoming and helpful. Also, admittance to the museum is free.

(Translated by Google) This museum is a good tribute to painter Pedro Figari, an important figure in the history of Uruguayan art. Figari is known for his contribution to the artistic movement known as "the School of the Beach" or "the School of the South", which influenced Uruguayan and regional painting in the early 20th century. There are also works by his son, Juan Carlos Figari, who also stood out in the artistic field (although his work did not achieve the same fame and notoriety as that of his father). Like any art museum, and in particular painting, I think it is a place that art lovers and connoisseurs of techniques will especially appreciate (which is not my case, by the way). The visit also serves to learn about the type of work that Figari made, which often represented scenes of daily life in Uruguay, including landscapes, portraits, and carnival scenes. The museum itself is very neat and orderly. There are phrases by Figari engraved on the walls that contribute to knowing a little more about what the painter felt and thought. For example, in one of them he says: "my painting is not a way of making painting, but a way of seeing, thinking, feeling and suggesting." If you are nearby, I recommend you visit it. It's worth it.

Nestled in the heart of Montevideo, the Museo de la Memoria stands as a poignant reminder of Uruguay's tumultuous past during the civilian-military dictatorship from 1973 to 1985. Opened in 2007, this evocative museum is situated in the former summer residence of dictator Maximo Santos and serves as a vital space for reflection on human rights and social justice.
An important museum of the sad history from Uruguay and other countries within South America. This museum is very informative and is a must for everyone to be educated on what has happened and hopefully will never happen again. I highly advise you to take a walk around the gardens after, as it is a nice way to finish your visit here. The gardeners were tidying, and hopefully, repairs would be made in certain areas. There is a broken archway and an abandoned building that is out of bound. Except for this the garden is really nice. There is a little pink castle and a grotto. The staff are really friendly and are ready to help and answer any questions. Free to enter. The museum is a bit far away from other tourist spots, but I am glad I came here.

What an amazing resource about an important time in Uruguayan history. Essential stop for any visitor. Alejandra Guzman took time to help we English speakers understand the exhibits. We are immensely grateful for her generosity and great spirit.
Ann W — Google review
As a Uruguayan it was a debt to go there, to refresh the memory about a grey and sad moment of the country, the military dictatorship period. However, and although the topic of the museum involves a terrorist moment of the country full of violence, torture, assassination and sadness, the tour throughout all the rooms convey stregth to fight or keep fighting against human rights violations. It is composed of different moments, the ressisstance, the coup, the disappearances of people and tortures. It worth seeing it! Set in an old neo classic style house with a history itself, enigmatic, and surrounded by an amazing french style garden in the middle of the City, that makes you forget about it, like being in another era.

The hosts were nice and the price was good, those are about the only good things to say. Otherwise very small and dark rooms, dirty bathroom and the linen and towels also didn’t look particularly clean. The included breakfast consists solely of toast and dulce de leche for which you don‘t even get a plate. Not really recommended.
