Bar
Bar Ibn Errik Rex is a unique and cozy drinking spot located on Rua Direita in Obidos. The cave-like interior is adorned with vintage spirit bottles, antique weapons, and captivating wall art that provides a medieval rooftop view. This local hotspot offers the opportunity to savor homemade ginja, a traditional Portuguese liquor made from sour cherries, along with flaming chorizo and cheese snacks. Visitors can also engage with the owner to learn about ginja production secrets.
Very unique bar and bought my ginja there. The owner is third generation sharing some history and stories about the bar.
Ai — Google review
If you came to a medieval town in rural Portugal and you don’t enjoy a flaming sausage with an affordable glass of port, then I would suggest the problem is with you and not this fine establishment. The owner is wonderful, the ambience is unmatched, and you will become instant friends with everyone else in the place. Shout out to them for saving my favorite rain jacket which I left there after probably one too many glasses of port. This place is friggin awesome!!
William B — Google review
There are so many ginjinha joints in this town and others, but this one is truly unique. The beverage here is (in our opinion - four adults) the best we’ve tasted. Not overly sweet, and more ‘full-bodied’ in character. But what sets this place apart from the others is the owner and his unique shop. The owner is a class-act, with a healthy sense of humor. He was charming and offered to take our picture as a family (and what a great trick he has to capture the best smiles!). Just a terrific man. Plus, his place has a ‘pirate’s cove’ kind of feel with all the bottles and woodwork in his shop. Highly recommend!
P. C — Google review
Bruno the owner of this family bar was fluent in several languages and was great with conversation about history here and Portugal in general. He also lives here within the castle walls. You should check it out!!
Kevin J — Google review
This bar makes its own ginja, and it was my favorite in the city. A local recommended it, and it definitely feels more authentic than the more touristy spots. I had to take a couple of bottles home!
Diego E — Google review
Bar Ibn Errik Rex is a hidden gem in Óbidos! Everything about this place is outstanding — from the magical medieval atmosphere to the warm and welcoming owner who makes you feel like an old friend. The ginja served in a chocolate cup is absolutely delicious, and the selection of local drinks is top-notch. A cozy, quirky spot full of character — don’t miss it!
Alejandra A — Google review
Ginja was very good! Not much food tho, only bread, cheese and sausage. Very hot inside.

Book store
Livraria de São Tiago in Óbidos is a unique bookstore managed by the Ler Devagar chain, located inside the 18th-century Sao Tiago church. The church, originally built in 1186 and rebuilt in 1772 after being destroyed by an earthquake, now houses this fascinating bookstore. It's quite unexpected to find a library within the castle walls, but it's truly impressive with a wide selection of books.
A Chapel converted into a library! Very unique and beautiful interiors. A wonderful place to lose yourselves in the books.
Bharathi M — Google review
It is quite interesting because you do not really expect to see a library during the castle wall walking , but it is quite impressive and there are lots of books that may interest you.

Historical landmark
Praça de Santa Maria is a charming square in Obidos, adorned with beautiful stone patterns and the striking Santa Maria Church. The tiled flooring adds to its allure, while the historical significance of being a site for executions gives it added importance. In addition to the church, visitors can also enjoy a fountain and nearby attractions like bars and museums. During special events like Obidos Vila Natal, the square comes alive with activities such as ice skating rinks and Christmas villages outside the castle walls.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Castelo de Óbidos is a grand medieval castle with origins dating back to the 9th century. The castle offers hotel rooms for visitors, allowing them to experience a unique stay within its historic walls. From the top of the castle, one can admire the charming streets below, adorned with Moorish roof tiles and old trees that create a picturesque setting.
🏰✨ Visiting Óbidos Castle is like stepping into a fairytale! The medieval walls, cobblestone streets, and breathtaking views from the top make it one of the most enchanting places in Portugal. Walking along the ramparts gives you a panoramic view of the charming whitewashed village below. It’s beautifully preserved and full of history — perfect for a romantic stroll or an inspiring photo walk. A magical stop you won’t forget! 🌸📸
Alejandra A — Google review
This place is like travelling back in time. A must if you are in Portugal on holiday. Definitely tour the medieval castle. The town is awesome too. So many shops, restaurants, pubs, souvenir stores. Worth staying a day and night to see all. Highly recommend.
Colin S — Google review
Walking the perimeter walls here is so fun. You get great views of both the inside city and the outside countryside. The stairs will give you a nice mini-workout too. Inside the city are a good selection of cafes, restaurants, and shops. I especially liked the chocolate shop! Entry is free here but a small fee for parking
Chris K — Google review
A must do. Perfect for a 3-4hour afternoon excursion. Such a unique experience where you can walk along the castle walls. I would wear shoes with a good grip on the soles though from stones that have become slippery over years of use. There are also tons of little restaurants and shops nestled in the old town.
Carina O — Google review
Óbidos is an incredible medieval town. The castle and the village are both beautifully preserved, and walking through the cobbled streets truly feels like stepping back in time. If you can, climb up and walk along the castle walls — the views from up there are absolutely stunning. Another great tip: try a ginjinha liqueur served in a small chocolate cup — it’s a delicious local treat! I highly recommend visiting Óbidos; it’s a magical place full of history and charm.
Murillo P — Google review
Happened to be in the area and couldn’t resist checking out Castelo de Óbidos. Found a parking spot by the road and walked up — parking was free, and entry was free as well. It’s really cool that there are houses inside the castle walls, and I even spotted a few properties for sale! I can imagine the place was very lively before the pandemic, but today it felt calm and relaxed — almost like a day off for the town. The highlight was definitely walking along the castle walls. Some sections are narrow and quite high up, so you might get a little thrill (or fear!) as you go — but it’s worth doing. Overall, it’s a charming and unique spot, perfect for a casual stroll and a bit of history.
EH L — Google review
When you visit Obidos, the castle is oblegatory. It is free and only from outside visible. Its the main entrance to Obidos citadel- or is was in acient times. Now people often arrive via automobils not horses. And with car you park on other side of Obidos. But the castle is the highest point and you can also climb the walls beside, which is only goid for people without fear of higths.
R. A — Google review
The place that was once aesthetically pleasing became a commercial “Disneyland” for tourists. For the past five years, it has changed significantly; the village has lost its original charm, and the castle is now a hotel where visitors are not allowed. If you want to see the original hysterical castle, unfortunately, this is not a place to visit. It’s become an Instagram place just to make beautiful pictures.

The Santuario do Senhor Jesus da Pedra, a Catholic church in Obidos dating back to the 1700s, is a magnificent sight to see. This baroque-style structure remains unfinished, with missing balconies and chimes in its towers. Inside, three separate chapels await: the main chapel of Calvary, along with side chapels dedicated to Lady of Conception and the Death of St. Joseph.
I think that so many people are caught up with visiting the Obidos Castle they forget about the beautiful sanctuary a little further along the road. It is certainly worth the 15 minute walk just to have some peace and a chance to contemplate.
Brendan M — Google review
Nice but simple church. Worth a little visit; don’t forget to walk around the church to see all the windows!
Coen N — Google review
Unique round church, built to honor a very old stone cross, probably from early Christianity. On Sunday morning they have orthodox celebrations, very musical and different.
Tiago L — Google review
Worth a quick stop to see this religious site under the backdrop of the Obidos Castle above. Cafe on-site or jump back in your car for the 2 minute drive to the castle and old town for a stroll.

Restaurant
Avocado Coffee & Healthy Food in Obidos is a top choice for those seeking healthy and delicious meals. The restaurant offers a variety of options including veggie burgers, goat cheese salad, and vegan-friendly dishes. Their menu also features sardines, gelato, and egg custard tarts. Visitors can enjoy breakfast, brunch, and light lunch fare throughout the day. The food is not only healthy but also very tasty with gluten-free options available.
This is a delightful little gem of a spot!! The staff is fabulous, the coffee was superb, and the food was absolutely delicious. Everything tasted super fresh and flavorful, the atmosphere was quiet and cozy, and the prices were more reasonable than inside the walls. I will definitely come back next time I visit!
Jackie B — Google review
Amazing atmosphere, nice service, and simple but very delicious food. Pancakes with fruits are the best I've tried in Portugal. Coffee is simple, it's not a coffee speciality, but it's very cozy so we enjoyed everything.
Iaroslav N — Google review
Great fresh food. We had the brunch. Yogurt with fruit, poached egg on avocado toast, mini pancakes with fruit and agave, orange juice and coffee. Great amount of food. All very fresh and healthy. Small indoor and outdoor seating areas.
Leif B — Google review
What a wonderful place for coffee and brunch. Beautiful boho-inspired furniture, super nice staff and excellent food at very decent prices. The banana, chocolate & peanut butter oatmeal was fantastic. I wish I could have stayed the entire day to try out all their other food too.

A great spot for a coffee break! The latte was a little overheated at first, but the flavor was delicious. I highly recommend trying the Piña Colada (they offer both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options)—it was wonderful! Although they don't serve cakes, the staff were friendly and helpfully suggested a nearby place for something sweet. Overall, a lovely experience.

Got there late in the day, so kitchen was closed. Staff were very helpful and offered me a slice of summer fruit pie. This was outstanding. Full of real fruit; a mixture of raspberry, strawberry, blueberries and blackberry. Had a nice iced coffee. Would definitely come back for lunch.

Tapas bar
Restaurant
Initially skeptical about Vintage - Tapas & Winebar - Restaurante in Óbidos, the reviewer was pleasantly surprised by their experience. Despite arriving hungry after lunchtime, they found the food to be delicious and well-prepared. The girlfriend enjoyed the chicken stroganoff, while the daughter requested a simple tomato sauce pasta which exceeded expectations. The reviewer ordered the "bacalhau a la bras" and found it amazing.
Amazing food! Completely vegetarian and vegan friendly with various options. Very large portion sizes, enough for 2 people to share a single portion. The service is great and the staff is very friendly. The food is deeeliiiciousss! Highly recommend :)
Alexandra J — Google review
A small restaurant with fitting decorations of tiles, pictures, knight suits, etc. The food is delicious, we ordered, fish pasta, grilled salman, octopus dish. Love the many vegetables on each dish. The chef and helpers seem to rotate between the place and the restaurant/bar across the street.
Mai S — Google review
I thought this was a tourist trap. It wasn't, my bad. We arrived a bit after lunch time and we were hungry. My GF took the chicken stroganoff which was very good. My daughter felt like pasta and since they had only elaborated pastas we asked if they can make her a simple tomato sauce pasta. They said yes, and it was delicious. I took the "bacalhau a la bras" (probably I wrote it wrong), it was amazing. The final bill was 26€ or something like that.
Boaz — Google review
Small place of around 10 tables. During lunch I had to wait longer to get my order. Despite ordering a fish dish I got meat sausage in it. Pointing this fact out waitress simply asked: “can’t you just put the sausage aside??”.. well, no! I can’t. For pescatarian this is strange request and also very unprofessional. I got new dish, more local, hopefully free of meat, hard to say.. but by the time I got my food I was not hungry anymore. It took also 3 attempts to present me with correct bill.. not a place I would return to to enjoy Portuguese hospitality.
Ch O — Google review
The food was amazing. They really know what they are doing. The service was faster than I had expected. We had lunch there and wanted to go back for dinner but there were way too many options. The sardines were really well made. The bacalhao was superb. Will certainly visit again if I'm in the area.

Catholic church
Located within the walls of Obidos near the castle gates, Igreja de São Tiago, also known as the Church of St. James, is a historic site that has been transformed into an intriguing bookstore. The church was originally constructed in 1186 and later rebuilt following damages from the 1755 earthquake, resulting in its current Baroque and Neo-Classical inspired appearance completed in 1772.
I walked into the Igreja de São Tiago, expecting silence. The kind of silence you feel in your bones, thick with prayers spoken and unspoken. But this church wasn’t like that anymore. It had traded its hymns for the rustle of paper and the quiet murmur of readers. The books were everywhere, stacked high where saints once watched over the faithful. Shelves stretched toward the arched ceilings, where light poured in through stained glass, painting the spines of novels and poetry collections in reds and golds. The place still had reverence, but it wasn’t for the divine. It was for words. I found a book of Portuguese poetry, slim and worn, and sat by the altar. The pews were gone, replaced by tables and chairs. It felt strange to sit where others might have knelt. But there was something good in it, too. Something honest. The books weren’t trying to save your soul, but they might save your mind on a lonely day. Outside, the streets of Óbidos were full of noise—tourists, laughter, the clatter of café cups. But inside the church, it was quiet. Not the silence of worship, but the quiet of people lost in their thoughts, their stories, their pages. I liked the place. It wasn’t holy anymore, but it was still sacred in its own way. A good place to be, if you’re looking for something—faith, or maybe just a good book. 📚
Dan S — Google review
Category: Tourist Area. If only all former churches could be repurposed as bookstores, and to be as well done as this one, bookstores may not be as challenged as they are in the U.S. Most of the books here seem to be in Portuguese, but I did find some in English. But unless you happen to speak Portuguese, the main reason to explore this bookstore is to appreciate it AS a bookstore in a dramatic and historical setting. YouTube’s Chef’s Apprentice

Sao Tiago Church stands within the Castle Obidos walls. It's just aside the main gate to the Castle grounds at the end of Direita main street. However, I was confused when I entered it was a bookstore inside. Moreover, they don't sell religious books only, but also kids books, cookbooks, novels, etc... At the same time we noticed a colorful Portuguese "stairway to heaven" stepped altar, so I concluded it's a mixture of a Church and a bookstore. Anyway, good and useful use of space.
Dejan B — Google review
Unusual combination of a church and a book shop. That’s definitely the first time I see something like that. It’s worth checking it out :)
Anya N — Google review
The bookcases make a 2-level labyrinth that make this church and exciting surprise. Wish we found more books in English, but will try to find the translated editions. Found a nice book explaining all the patterns on the streets of Lisbon! Can't wait to explore all the "Easter eggs" of Lisbon
Mina — Google review
A small bookshop right before you reach the Obidos Moor Castle. There's still some artwork inside that you can appreciate, though the majority of it are books. There's multiple languages available, but obviously it's majority Portuguese. If you're just here for a photo, head to the second floor for a better view.
B. L — Google review
The best idea to make a church in a beautiful book shop. Well done!!!
Michail K — Google review
Beautiful historic church now a bookstore. Make sure to take the stairs up to the right upon entry to visit the second floor mezzanine where poet and artist Natália Santos handmakes lace jewelry spun from metallic thread. Every piece of jewelry comes with a poem and passion for the craft, and is very reasonably priced. Love to support local artists!

Book store
Livraria do Mercado - Ler Devagar in Óbidos has a rich history dating back to 1153, built over the ruins of a former Roman fortress. As part of the Obidos Vila Literaria project, it is one of nearly 10 bookstores in the village and is housed in a former fire station. The bookstore harmoniously shares its space with the Obidos Organic Market and features repurposed fruit crates as shelves.
As part of the project called Óbidos Vila Literária, the village of Óbidos is following a development strategy aimed at bringing together culture and books with its surroundings, the country, and the whole world. Livraria do Mercado, set up in a former fire station, is one of the nearly 10 bookstores in Óbidos. It harmoniously uses the space together with the Óbidos Organic Market. The spacious venue, with its shelves made from repurposed fruit crates, catches the eye of passersby. By offering second-hand books in different languages to foreign visitors, it successfully impresses foreign visitors. We were pleased to be influenced by this beautiful effect and spent some time inside, purchasing a few books. The lovely music listened by the lady at the checkout accompanied our browsing of the books. She was very polite and friendly during the purchase process. In a small place like Óbidos, I can say it's one of the few important places you should definitely visit.
Murat Y — Google review
Category: Tourist Area. Two things make this bookshop stand out: 1. Bookshelves full of books 📚 soar into the peaks — past the rafters — of the high ceiling, at both ends of the shop, and 2. The shop also sells fresh fruits 🍎 and vegetables, leading one to wonder who buys them in this town of fewer than 100 full-time residents (the demand must be there, or the vegetables 🥕 would not be). If there had been a way to identify a book on the highest shelves, I would have bought it just so I could see how the bookseller would have retrieved it. A few methods came to mind: a. Ladder 🪜 (there was a library ladder along a side wall, but it was too short). b. Crossbow with a retrieval string attached to the arrow (I saw a few antique crossbows around this ancient village). c. Await an earthquake, like the one that rocked the village in the 1750s (too slow, even by medieval 🏰 standards). d. Send a flying monkey 🐒 like the ones in The Wizard of Oz (they would feel quite at home in the castle, but this seems to be a MFZ (monkey-free zone)). Maybe you will have your own ideas. Lodging
Casa do Castelo in Óbidos offers a choice between a medieval stay in the castle itself or cozy accommodations right beside the castle, which exudes a village home vibe. The small and quaint lodging provides picturesque views of the castle wall day and night, with clean and charming old-fashioned decor.
The house is amazing. It has a real fireplace, with solid mahogany beds like in the 1940s. It has two floors and the host brings bread and croissants in the morning along with juice and milk and coffees. The host is so nice, he offered us some pointers around town for the less touristy places. The downside is the cold rooms at night, but we were happy enough to warm up under the blankets

Such a hard review to write. We are happy we stayed here (the location and ambiance can't be beat), but think future visitors should have their expectations set. This place is more of an 'experience' than a comfortable place to stay. You will be staying in a very old, small apartment with the quirks and inconveniences that brings. The apartment is musty, feels damp and cold. The appliances are very basic and of limited use, as is the 'kitchen' and the bathroom. The bedrooms are tiny...the second room literally has room only for the bed with less than a foot of space around it. Maintenance seems to be fairly lax, but the bedding did seem to be fresh and clean. On the up side...the host is very nice and brought lovely fresh breakfast items each morning of our stay. I would say, just be aware that if you want the experience and romance of staying in a 'castle', with all the inconveniences that brings, this is a pretty cool place to stay for a night or two

Super cute hotel. Staff was amazing. View was great - nestled in a quiet part of town that is easily accessible. It's a small town so that isn't much of an issue - but I quite enjoyed my stay wandering the town and having some meals and then chatting up the owner for the rest of the night outside. Incredibly gracious and helpful staff - room was very cute. Wish I had more time, one of 3 highlight stays during my time in Europe.

Great little house with very good views of the walls and castle. You rent the whole property (kitchen, living room, 2 rooms, bathroom and toilet. The owner is superfriendly and he makes you feel like at home. He will welcome you and give you the keys and the next day he brings fresh bread and croissants in the morning. I really recommend it!!

(Translated by Google) The house is terrible. It's dirty and smells like mold. Everything is very old, the bathroom brush has never been replaced and is very dirty, it still shows signs of old customers. Not to mention cobwebs, dust and the toilet paper bag with scraps of paper left by various passers-by over the years, placed there as replacements where, however, only the finished rolls are present. The lights were not all working and the electrical system was not very safe. In conclusion, perfect for Halloween!

(Translated by Google) The location is great and the host is friendly. However, the house leaves a lot to be desired in terms of living conditions. Everything is very old, it smells of mold, the shower stall doesn't have a door and the taps are rusty, with water leaking from underneath. The decor is old and outdated, the doors are stiff and the cleaning is not very thorough. The toilet paper is replaced with the remains of old rolls. It could be an environmentally friendly option if there weren't also empty rolls mixed in. However, it has all the kitchen utensils and the breakfast is good. (Original) A localização é ótima e o anfitrião simpático.

(Translated by Google) A very cute and bright host grandfather welcomes you. The accommodation is small, but pretty and old-fashioned. There are stairs going up the castle wall right next to the accommodation. The view of the castle wall from the window is beautiful both day and night. The accommodation is clean, especially the bed is very clean.
