Cua Bac Parish Church, also known as the Church of Martyrs, is a Roman Catholic church located in Hanoi. Built between 1925 and 1932 by French architect Ernest Hebrard, it features a unique blend of Asian and European architectural styles. The church's asymmetrical design sets it apart from other churches of its time, with a high bell tower on one side and a dome in the center. Its yellow facade and simply appointed interior add to its charm.
Cửa Bắc Church offers a peaceful and meaningful glimpse into Hanoi’s rich history and spiritual life. With its unique blend of French and Vietnamese architecture and serene garden setting, it stands as a symbol of cultural harmony and quiet reflection in the heart of the city.
Guruslin K — Google review
Nice looking Catholic Church. The service I attended was in Vietnamese, and it was very well organised, and all attendees seemed very engaged. However, I was stopped by a group of older women who told me that if I wasn't a Catholic, I shouldn't be there. This made me feel very disappointed about the Catholic community in Hanoi. I have been to many holy Christian sites, including the Vatican city and Jerusalem. Not one time I was questioned and asked to leave for not being Christian. It is my understanding that all are welcome in the house of the Lord. I told them they shouldn't stop anyone from entering the Church. Unfortunately, older people in Hanoi have a lot of power, so they do not listen to someone younger than them. Having said that, the younger people seemed very friendly. The toilets are clean and free to use.

The external architecture is impressive. Inside, it is really the opposite of beauty and whoever designed the interior architecture clearly worked against God. It is extremely modern and repulsive to me.

This church has the most beautiful choir I’ve encountered during my travel. Sunday Mass at 10:30 AM!

We have our Christmas Day prayer there after walking 2.4km from the hotel we stayed. The choir was amazing. So beautiful voice and the ochestra was amazingly nice. The church is beautiful and unique in colour. It's free. No need ticket

St Anthony Ham Long Church, situated in the heart of Hanoi, Vietnam, is a Roman Catholic church with a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. The church's architecture features intricate details such as rope-style decorations and Gothic-inspired bell towers. Surrounding the church are lifelike statues of saints, adding to its cultural significance. Visitors can attend mass and experience the warm atmosphere of religious devotion and traditional customs.
After a disappointed dinner at Le Monde, we decided to walk back to our hotel to burn all the fats so that we can eat again. While walking, we chanced upon this church. At 730pm, Sunday Mass was just finished and lots of people were leaving. We sneaked in and found that this is St. Anthony Ham Long Church. Very clean and nicely decorated church. We just said Hello to our Lord and continued our walk and felt the peace, joy and serenity.

Located about 20min walk from old quarters, south of Hoan Kiem lake. Attended the 7pm Vietnamese mass on 20 Jan 24. Had a feeling I was the only non-local there, everyone had probably flocked to St Joseph Cathedral.😂 The choir was amazing especially the girl who sang the responsorial psalms with such a beautiful voice even though I couldn't understand a single word. Forgive me for using my phone during mass 😬🙏🏾 Daily mass: 05:30 (06:30 in winter) – 18:30 (Thursday) – 19:00 (except Monday) Saturday mass: 19.00 Sunday mass: 06:00 (06:30 in winter) – 08:30 (for children) – 17:00 (for youth) – 19:00

It is one of the three cathedrals in Hanoi and is called Hàm Lon Castle Wall because it was built on the old street of Hàm Lon. It is a place where many people visit to visit and take pictures because it is not much time left for Christmas at the end of the year. The church lights are pretty, but the lights on the street trees are so pretty. Recommended for families and couples. ^^*

The procession was very warm and beautiful in church. Everyone deeply respects to Mother Mary. A wonderful cultural combination between the Catholicism and national traditions !

St. Joseph Cathedral, also known as Nha Tho Lon or The Big Church, is a Roman Catholic neo-gothic style cathedral situated in the heart of Hanoi near Hoan Kiem Lake. Constructed around 120 years ago, it is the oldest church hosting religious activities for Hanois parishioners. Its design bears resemblance to the architecture of Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral. Just steps away from this iconic landmark lies T.U.N.
St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Hanoi Beautiful Gothic-style cathedral located right in the heart of Hanoi. The interior is stunning, with colorful stained-glass windows and an impressive altar, creating a solemn yet captivating atmosphere. The area around the cathedral is lively, especially in the evenings. There are many street cafés, tea shops, and snack stalls where you can sit, enjoy a drink, and watch the bustling surroundings. Perfect for sightseeing, taking photos, and soaking in the local vibe. ⭐ Rating: 4.5/5 👍 Pros: Iconic architecture, great photo spots, plenty of nearby food and drink options. 👎 Cons: Often crowded with tourists, can be noisy outside during peak hours.

Constructed between 1884 and 1886, its design resembles Notre Dame de Paris, and it serves as a significant historical and spiritual landmark. Its an old Roman Catholic church located in the city's Old Quarter in Hanoi. The church is known for its striking architecture, intricate stained glass, featuring tall spires and a weathered exterior that adds to its timeless charm. It was very close to our hotel so we made several trips here . It is mostly crowded around this area. There are cozy cafes surrounding it n a school too.

Very beautiful church/cathedral They have mass furing Friday and Saturday. We were not allowed to enter druing the Sat 6pm mass for some reason. Not sure why, i cannot understand what the lady was saying. So we just prayed outside. Will definitely love to visit and enter next time. Many people around since these is located near the old quarters where there are lots of cafes. Traffic is crazy so i think walking while going around is the best.

The Cathedral had a really good architecture. Outside is full busy with everyone trying to take pictures. I was disappointed it was not open and not sure why it was closed. No one really had an answer to that, I went during a normal working day during day time around midday. Kind of disappointed it was closed!

Phung Khoang Church, a 111-year-old charming and well-maintained church in Hanoi, holds great historical and cultural significance. It is easily accessible by Metro, with the Phung Khoang station nearby. The church offers a peaceful and spacious environment for prayer and relaxation, featuring a lovely pond where some visitors enjoy fishing. Additionally, there is a monastery at the back and an open chapel on the premises.

Hoàn Kiếm Lake in Hanoi is steeped in legend and history. It's associated with the tale of Emperor Le Loi, who returned a magical sword to a Golden Turtle God after defeating invaders. The lake is home to the ancient Great-Grandfather Turtle and features remarkable architectural landmarks like the hundred-year-old Turtle Tower, Ngoc Son temple, and the vibrant red The Huc bridge.
A very nice outdoor area especially on Sunday as it was isolated from cars. People can walk and jog around the lake and in very nice weather. So lovely to see locals interacting with their loved ones.
Dian O — Google review
We visited this lake as part of a city tour. The stories told by our guide were certainly more interesting than the surrounding scenery and attractions. It's definitely a must-see if you're staying in Hanoi.
Sakban R — Google review
Located at the heart i.e old part of Hanoi near old quarters. In English it is known as lake of returned sword It’s one of the most famous tourist spot for visitors and hangout spot for locals The circumference of lake is paved for joggers. At evening lot of crowd gather at square near lake to enjoy the serene atmosphere with local music bands /individuals playing music. There are lot of vendors selling food to tourist No ticket required to visit here. There is a famous temple located at the islet in the lake reached via wooden bridge that lighted from evening. The lake is habitat to giant turtles ,few bodies of turtles are preserved and displayed in the temple. There is also a old tower at midst of lake. A must visit place in Hanoi.
Gaurav A — Google review
Loved our morning stroll along Hoan Kiem Lake just around the old quarters. Beautiful view, fresh air, and plenty of space to walk as the paths are wider than the streets that most are used to. Came across a few runners, countless walking, and numerous couples, families, and friends opting for photography with this beautiful lake. Can't blame them! There is a bridge that requires some sort of entry fee to receive access but today we simply soaked in the experience. Locals clearly love to gather around this place too. A temple at the centre of the lake is within view. The greenery and garden surrounding the lake is so well taken care of. Saw several locals watering and caring for it during our stroll.

Such a magic place to visit, perfect for a casual walk after a feed or even to get some exercise in. Seeing the locals exercise around the lake gives you a feeling of happiness and calm. It's truely beautiful ✨️❤️

To have this lake in the middle of Hanoi is such a respite from the hustle bustle of the old quarters. It's breezy and calm, and seems to absorb all the frenzy within it. Love sitting by the lake on cloudy morning or breezy evenings and chewing away on my banh mi. Highly recommend to stay close the lake, preferably with lake facing views from hotels when visiting as a tourist.

Hoan Kiem Lake is the calm heart of Hanoi — a beautiful place to walk, relax, and enjoy the city’s atmosphere. Surrounded by trees, cafés, and local life, it’s especially charming in the evening when the lights reflect on the water. Peaceful, scenic, and a must-see in the Old Quarter.

Hoa Lo Prison, often referred to as the Hanoi Hilton, stands as a poignant reminder of Vietnam's tumultuous past. This historic site primarily served as a detention center for American POWs during the Vietnam War, including notable figures like Senator John McCain. Today, only the gatehouse remains and has been transformed into a museum that offers insights into its storied history.
I visited Hoa Lo Prison in Hanoi and paid 50,000 VND for the entrance. I didn’t get the audio guide since many of the exhibits already have clear explanations in English. It was very interesting to see and learn about the history of the prison and what life was like for both Vietnamese and American prisoners. The displays are well organized and give a deep look into an important part of Vietnam’s past. Definitely worth visiting if you enjoy history.
Lydia C — Google review
Stepping into Hoa Lo Prison was like walking back in time. The dark cells, heavy doors, and detailed exhibits created a somber atmosphere that really conveyed the weight of its history. The information throughout was clear and engaging, making the stories of the past feel vivid and real. It wasn’t crowded during my visit, so I could wander quietly and reflect, spending about an hour inside. The entry fee was very reasonable for such a powerful experience. With half the site outdoors and little air conditioning inside, the heat added to the intensity of the visit. A haunting yet unforgettable stop in Hanoi.
Suhen R — Google review
Nice place. You will get to see the history of the prison, the way they showcasing the history with the realistic statues will make you feel standing there back then. Well preserved and details written everywhere. Even without the audio guide also you will understand everything.
Birupakshya P — Google review
Definitely worth a visit if you want to learn about Vietnam’s history during the French occupation and the Vietnam War. The displays are eye opening and tell the story really well. It is sad to see how prisoners were kept shackled before execution, but it gives real perspective on what they went through. A powerful place to visit and highly recommended.
F S — Google review
HOA LO (HANOI HILTON) prison will be of great interest for anyone who has taken the time to research Vietnam's history, and it's struggles with transient foreign powers. The setting underlines the incredible will power of the Vietnamese people to endure inhuman treatment at the hands of external aggressor's. In recent years the prison was synonymous for detaining American pilots, downed during 'missions'. The facility is well visited by the local citizens and tourists alike. There are audible guides freely available which allow you to comfortably solo guide through the setting. The venue is well maintained, very informative and th staff are helpful. What more can you ask for.
Philly B — Google review
Situated in the city and easy to reach from the old quarters. Only a small portion of the original facility remained. Lots of exhibits showing the history and condition of the prisoners and we were able to walk into the cells as well. Worth a visit if you have never visited a prison.
Rachel T — Google review
A powerful and emotional museum that tells the story of Vietnam’s turbulent past. Hoa Lo Prison offers well-curated exhibits, strong visuals, and detailed explanations that help you understand the realities faced by prisoners. A sobering but important visit — highly recommended if you want to learn more about Hanoi’s history.

Ngoc Son Temple is a serene 18th-century pagoda located on a small island in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as Sword Lake. Accessible by an ornate wooden bridge, the temple is dedicated to national hero Tran Hung Dao and houses altars and ancient artifacts, including ceramics. The lake itself was once home to giant turtles, considered mythical creatures akin to the legend of Excalibur.
If you are at Hanoi. Do visit this local temple which is known for its peaceful ambience and beautiful architecture. The place reflects the Vietnamese way of worship and gives a glimpse about their spiritual life. According to the stelae at the site, Ngoc Son Temple’s construction started in autumn of 1841, under the reign of the Ly Dynasty. It worships Van Xuong De Quan (Wenchang Dijun), a Taoist deity that brings happiness and wealth to scholars. It is also dedicated to General Tran Hung Dao (1231 - 1300), who defeated the Mongols in the 13th century. 1 hour is enough to visit the place and you can buy tickets at the entrance.
Hemanth S — Google review
We enjoyed this place from the outside, around the lake. If you have time, it’s nice to check out the temple from the inside. It’s flocking with tourists. Early hours are the best time to visit to avoid big tour groups. One has to dress appropriately to visit the temple. (Knees and shoulders covered). One of the prominent places in the Hanoi Old Quarter.
K B — Google review
Only reason I give 4 stars is this is one of two temples dedicated Confucius and of the two this one is far more crowded with tourists, plus the other temple is nearly 800 years older. This temple was constructed in 1800s while the temple of literature (also a temple dedicated to Confucius) was first built in 1070. If you are short on time and staying in the old quarter this is still a great place to see as it is centrally located and in a beautiful lake setting however if you have more time I recommend going to the temple of literature. You can still get a good view of this temple from the lakeside trail without paying to enter, just somthing to consider! Still very beautiful and spiritual!
Soren S — Google review
Right in the middle of Hoàn Kiếm Lake, surrounded by incense smoke and a peaceful atmosphere. It feels spiritual and calm, especially with the lake reflections and the red bridge leading inside. The story behind the temple and the lake is fascinating: according to legend, a magical turtle gave a sword to a hero to defend the country, and later the sword was returned to the turtle in the lake. The turtle symbolizes wisdom and longevity, which makes it such an important cultural symbol for Vietnam. Inside the temple, there are two preserved giant turtles on display. They’re incredibly rare and sacred, but there’s almost no information about them no details like their names, size, or age. It would’ve been nice to learn more, especially since there are so few of these turtles left in the world. One turtle was very well preserved clean, shiny, and clearly cared for. But the other one sadly had spider webs and dead insects around it. It made me a bit disappointed because it’s such a special part of Vietnamese history, and visitors pay to see it. I think it deserves better maintenance. Still, overall, it’s a beautiful and safe place to visit, even if you’re traveling solo. Worth seeing for the view, the history, and the cultural story just hope they’ll take better care of those legendary turtles.

Our family had the most wonderful discovery right in the middle of Hanoi: the Ngoc Son Temple. This place is truly magical, or as we say, nakakagigil (excitingly captivating)! It feels so mystical and serene as it sits right in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake. Walking across that gorgeous red bridge (Huc Bridge) to get there was an experience in itself. You immediately feel a profound sense of peace and history once you step inside. What made it extra special for our pamilya was the location. Imagine—it was only a three-minute walk from our hotel in the Old Quarter! We were so lucky to have this mystical spot right on our doorstep. Visiting Ngoc Son Temple was a quiet, spiritual moment amidst the city's hustle. It truly felt like we found a hidden gem at the very heart of Hanoi. A must-see for anyone visiting the city!

A stone tower built at the entrance to the Temple complex. It is inscribed with Chinese characters meaning "to write on the blue sky," symbolizing the importance of knowledge and education. Visitors cross the iconic red, arched wooden bridge, called The Huc Bridge (or "Morning Sunlight Bridge"), to reach the temple grounds. The bridge is a popular spot for photos. The temple houses the remains of a giant turtle that once lived in the lake. This specimen is linked to the legend of King Le Loi, who famously returned a magical sword to a divine turtle in Hoan Kiem Lake. Price for entry is a little steep, especially in comparison to many other temples in Hanoi. Chinese Confucian influence is also apparent, with multiple auspicious exhortations or calls to virtue written around gates and pillars. Note: Since it is a place of worship, visitors should dress respectfully. This includes covering knees and shoulders.

This temple is located by the Hoan Kiem Lake. It gives a peaceful vibe as it is by the lake. The popular red bridge goes towards the temple which is a beautiful spot to take pictures. The temple has a spacious campus. You can sit by the temple to have a peaceful time. There is an Entry ticket for the temple.

A nice little temple nestled in the middle of the Ho Hoan Kiem lake. If you want to take some time away from the hustling and bustling old quarter, make sure to take a stroll around the lake and have a look at this temple! There is a mini museum in it highlighting the Vietnamese beliefs in the 4 sacred animals (like turtle, phoenix, dragon and qilin). PS. You could get tickets on the day of, need not make advance bookings for it. Enjoy!

Crowded and could be cleaner. And due to its Michelin recognition people come and go, and their Pho sells like hot cakes but in my opinion a bit overrated. I've tasted better around the area.

The Temple of Literature in Hanoi is a significant cultural and educational site, often considered one of the city's most appealing historical attractions. It comprises two architectural complexes: Van Mieu, a Confucian temple dedicated to revered figures, and Quoc Tu Giam, Vietnam's first university. Surrounded by stone walls and old trees, the temple exudes a peaceful atmosphere despite its location on a bustling street.
Temple which showcases the importance of education in traditional Vietnamese culture. Also notable is the extensive Chinese influence on Vietnam over time, and the localization of it into Vietnamese culture over the years. Much of what we see today was reconstructed - notably with help from the Australian government. The majority of the temple was destroyed over the ages, and during the Vietnam war. The temple, impressively so, makes a point of incorporating local artists and art, and not merely historical items to complement the presentation. For the front of this temple, the modern artistic representation of Chu Van Anh was quite notable. Highly recommend devoting some of your time in Vietnam to visit this significant historical landmark. Do not recommend renting the audio guide, which seems to simply narrate the information on placards within. Will further elaborate on separate reviews within.

The Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám) is an absolute must-see in Hanoi, offering a beautiful and tranquil escape from the city's hustle. This isn't just a temple; it is the site of Vietnam's first national university, founded in 1070, and it wonderfully captures the nation's profound and enduring respect for education. Walking through the five courtyards, you are treated to stunning, well-preserved traditional Vietnamese architecture, especially the iconic Khue Van Cac (Constellation of Literature Pavilion), which is so significant it's the symbol of Hanoi! The shaded green gardens and the central Well of Heavenly Clarity provide a genuinely peaceful atmosphere. Be sure to see the 82 ancient Doctoral Stelae, set upon stone turtles, which honor the successful graduates of royal exams—a moving testament to centuries of scholarship. It is a rich, calming, and deeply meaningful historical site that beautifully tells the story of Vietnam's cultural heritage.

It must have been graduation photo day because it was unbelievably crowded, and there was another event happening inside as well. Still, it definitely felt like I was visiting a major landmark. It’s a place that becomes much more enjoyable when you read the explanations. Since it has a long history and many stories related to Confucius and his disciples, I recommend reading the brochures or information panels. *Free admission for children under 13. *Adults: 70,000 VND.

A beautiful and historically rich landmark dedicated to Vietnam’s first national university. The Temple of Literature blends serene gardens, traditional Vietnamese architecture, and a deep cultural atmosphere. A peaceful place to walk, take photos, and learn about the country’s academic heritage. Truly a must-see in Hanoi.

The Temple of Literature is a remarkable historical site that offers a fascinating glimpse into Vietnam’s first national university, once dedicated entirely to literature and scholarly excellence. Walking through its courtyards and traditional architecture feels like stepping back in time—every detail reflects the artistry and cultural depth of the era. However, not everything was ideal during my visit. This is a popular spot for graduation photos, and at this time of year the place was packed with students, photographers, teachers, and families. Because of the crowds, it was difficult to fully appreciate the calm and beauty the site is known for. Even so, the Temple of Literature remains a wonderful place to explore, full of history, symbolism, and charm. With fewer visitors, it would be an even more meaningful experience.
JAVIER P — Google review
This is a very pleasant place to visit. We pais 70k per adult and we enjoyed our time foi g around the different buildings. There are souvenir shops inside, as well as a man who will do a writing of your choosing (e.g. prosperity) for 100k per piece - which I think it is a great gift to give to someone (plus it is very interesting to see him doing it).
Maurício N — Google review
The Temple of Literature is truly one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I visited in Hanoi. Built in 1070, it is known as Vietnam’s first national university, dedicated to Confucius and the values of knowledge, discipline, and moral character. Despite being nearly a thousand years old, the compound is incredibly well-preserved — from its iconic red gates to its quiet courtyards, lotus ponds, and traditional Vietnamese architecture. The moment you step inside, the noise of Hanoi fades away and is replaced by a calm, almost sacred atmosphere. What stands out the most is its sense of wisdom and history. The stone steles carried by turtles — engraved with the names of ancient scholars — are powerful reminders of how deeply Vietnam values education. Every corner feels symbolic, meaningful, and surprisingly photogenic without losing its authenticity. Overall, the Temple of Literature is a must-visit in Hanoi. Whether you come for history, culture, architecture, or simply a peaceful break from the busy city, this place leaves a lasting impression. Highly recommended. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The One Pillar Pagoda in Hanoi, Vietnam, is one of the country’s most iconic and unique Buddhist temples. Built in 1049 during the reign of Emperor Lý Thái Tông, it was designed to resemble a lotus blossom, symbolizing purity and enlightenment. The entire structure stands on a single stone pillar, rising from a serene lotus pond — giving it its name. It’s a great place to visit, especially since there are a few other attractions nearby. So, it’s always a good idea to combine a visit to this place with a walk around. NOTE:- As always, my reviews are based solely on my personal experience and are completely honest. I’m not some history/architecture/religious geek but I think it’s a nice building and so is the area around it. The building seems to be a bit abandoned especially from the behind but considering it’s also free of charge, it’s not a bad option to visit this location. There are several small shops where you can buy souvenirs for affordable price and even WC. Would also be nice if other tourists had manners and not jump in everywhere, otherwise had a good experience. As for the dress-code it’s very often in similar places to be asked to cover shoulders and legs but we didn’t notice any signs and weren’t asked anything so I would recommend to have something on you, just in case :)

The One Pillar Pagoda is a small iconic landmark nestled in the heart of Hanoi. We missed it first time and had to go back again a few days later. It was built in 1049 during the reign of Emperor Ly Thai Tong. Supported by a single stone pillar rising from a lotus pond, its architecture is truly unique and symbolic in Vietnamese Buddhism. The site is located within the Ba Dinh District, not far from the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and is surrounded by beautiful gardens and shaded pathways that offer a calm escape from the bustling city streets. It’s a quick but worthwhile stop—many visitors were spending around 10–20 minutes here, making it perfect to combine with nearby attractions like the Presidential Palace, Ho Chi Minh’s Stilt House, and the One Pillar Pagoda Museum. Early morning is the best time to visit for quieter crowds and softer lighting for photos. While small in scale, the site holds great spiritual and historical value. Hanoi Opera House, an ornate performing arts hall, is a must-see destination in the heart of Hanoi's French Quarter. ried to visit The Operation in Hanoi after hearing some great things about it—but turns out, the only “operation” we got was a pit stop on the motorbike, staring at a closed gate! I think the place was taking its own day off for repairs, or maybe just secretly plotting the next menu surprise.Honestly, it became quite the adventure: riding through the city, parking up for our big arrival, only to be greeted by the quietest staff imaginable (aka nobody). If you want mystery, suspense, and a plot twist on your lunch break, The Operation is definitely the place… as long as you call ahead, unless you want to contemplate the meaning of “closed” with a helmet in hand. We’ll be back—it’s a mission now. Tran Quoc Pagoda is a serene and picturesque Buddhist temple located on a small island in the West Lake of Hanoi. It is the oldest temple in the city, dating back to the 6th century. The pagoda features a stunning seven-story tower and various shrines with intricate statues and carvings that signify different stages in Buddha's life. Originally built on the bank of the Red River, it was later relocated to its current location due to river encroachment.
Tran Quoc Pagoda in Hanoi is one of the city’s most iconic and spiritually significant landmarks. Located on a small peninsula on West Lake, this ancient pagoda dates back more than 1,400 years, making it the oldest in the capital. Its striking red tower, rising gracefully against the water and sky, creates a picturesque scene that is especially captivating at sunrise or sunset. The pagoda complex is beautifully maintained, with carefully tended bonsai gardens, statues of the Buddha, and intricate carvings that reflect Vietnam’s rich Buddhist traditions. The main highlight is the 11-story stupa, each level containing precious statues and symbols of enlightenment. Visitors often find the tranquil setting a peaceful retreat from the bustle of Hanoi’s streets. For photographers, Tran Quoc Pagoda offers excellent compositions with its reflection on the lake, the contrast of red brick against green foliage, and the serene atmosphere created by incense smoke drifting in the breeze. It’s also an excellent place to capture daily life, as locals come to pray and make offerings. Overall, Tran Quoc Pagoda is not only a must-see cultural site but also one of the most photogenic locations in Hanoi, combining history, spirituality, and natural beauty in one remarkable setting.

The place is serene and not much crowded. It is right at the main road and adjacent to a water body. Visited Tran Quoc Pagoda last week and absolutely loved it! The pagoda sits right on West Lake, so the view is amazing, especially in the morning when the water is calm and the temple reflects beautifully. The place feels so peaceful, perfect for a quiet stroll or some meditation. The architecture is stunning—lots of intricate carvings, Buddha statues, and the 11-story tower is impressive. It’s not a huge place, so you can explore everything in about 45 minutes to an hour. There are a few signs in English, but having a guide or just reading about it beforehand helps understand the history. Pros: peaceful, scenic, historical, photogenic Cons: can get crowded during weekends/festivals Overall, it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in Hanoi. A nice mix of culture, history, and serenity!

If you are visiting Hanoi and have interest in history, architecture or Buddhism, visiting Trấn Quốc Pagoda is highly recommended. It gives a mix of spiritual ambience, cultural heritage and scenic location. While it may not be the most secluded or off-the-beaten-path site (thanks to its popularity), it stands out because of its legacy and charm. Located reasonably close to central Hanoi, making it convenient to include in a city visit.Free to enter and open daily. For a full day outing, I’d suggest arriving early, spending some time in the temple grounds, then strolling around West Lake, visiting the surrounding cafés n possibly catching the sunset. If you prefer serenity, avoid the busiest hours. Dress appropriately: Shoulders and knees should be covered; remove hats inside halls if required. You need to take off ur footware when entering inside the Pagoda.

Trấn Quốc Pagoda is an absolute gem and a must-visit for anyone seeking a moment of tranquility in bustling Hanoi. As the oldest Buddhist temple in the city, its history, dating back over 1,500 years, adds a profound depth to the experience. The serene setting, situated on a small islet in West Lake, is simply breathtaking. The majestic eleven-story red stupa, adorned with Buddha statues, rises beautifully against the water. Visiting at sunset is particularly magical, as the golden light bathes the entire complex, creating a truly sacred and picturesque atmosphere. Don't miss the Bodhi tree, said to be an offspring of the tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment! It's a peaceful, spiritual, and beautifully preserved piece of Vietnamese heritage.

The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long is a remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site that showcases Vietnam's rich history and architectural grandeur. Dating back to the 11th century, this complex features stunning buildings and sculptures, including an impressive tower and a stone dragon. Visitors can explore the remnants of Hanoi's imperial dynasties, including a fascinating bunker used by North Vietnam’s military during the Vietnam War, complete with historical maps and communication booths.
The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long in Hanoi is a fascinating historical site that offers a deep look into Vietnam’s imperial past. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the citadel has stood as a political and cultural center for over a thousand years. Visitors can explore ancient gates, archeological remains, and restored halls that showcase the layers of history from different dynasties, most notably the Ly, Tran, and Le periods. The complex is not only architecturally impressive but also rich in symbolism, reflecting the evolution of Vietnamese culture and governance. Highlights include the Doan Mon Gate, the Flag Tower of Hanoi, and the underground wartime headquarters used during the 20th century. The citadel’s expansive grounds make it a peaceful place to walk, offering a balance of heritage, gardens, and archaeological displays. For photographers, the site presents endless opportunities: weathered walls, ancient stone pathways, traditional gates, and the striking contrast between historic structures and modern Hanoi in the background. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when the light is softer, adding depth and atmosphere to the ruins and gardens. Overall, the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long is a must-visit for history lovers and photographers alike, offering both cultural insight and unique visual inspiration.

A very peaceful historical site with many monuments and beautiful views. There weren’t many tourists, so we were able to fully enjoy the area, explore all the buildings, and even visit the underground bunker. Definitely worth seeing for anyone interested in history and unique architecture, offering both a quiet atmosphere and fascinating sights that make it a memorable experience. .

Honestly, when I think of the many incredible UNESCO World Heritage sites in Asia, this was something of a disappointment. I understand it's cultural importance and archaeological value but it isn't getting very much care and attention. I kid you not when I say that it's a rubbish dump in one corner and a great many of the buildings are in a state of considerable disrepair. I would happily pay more to enter in order that they spend some money on upkeep. Also the garden in front is basically a stage for sports, concerts and events with a stage completely blocking the view of the principle building. It definitely has atmosphere, some interesting artifacts and great history but I am not convinced they are doing it justice.....
Guy B — Google review
Fascinating place with so much history. Between the photos of “then and now” you can see the old majesty of the citadel. As others have said it appears much of the archaeological site is in much need of funding but well worth the visit. Ensure you see the bunkers as well. An eye into a much more recent past.
Mattie C — Google review
The Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long is a truly extraordinary and unmissable UNESCO World Heritage Site that forms the spiritual and political heart of Hanoi. This vast complex offers a fascinating journey through over a thousand years of Vietnamese history, with layers of culture from the Lý, Trần, and Lê Dynasties all in one place. Walking through the magnificent Đoan Môn (Main Gate) and admiring the ancient Hanoi Flag Tower is a powerful experience, making you feel the grandeur of the imperial past. However, the site's real strength lies in its blend of history, from the 11th-century foundations and the famous Stone Dragon Steps of the Kinh Thiên Palace, to the D67 Revolutionary House and Bunker used by the Vietnamese military leadership during the war. The atmosphere is peaceful and offers a wonderful escape from the city noise. I highly recommend taking the time to explore the archaeological excavation site across the street to fully appreciate the depth and complexity of this incredible historical landmark. It is a profoundly moving and educational visit!

Though not huge the Imperial Citadel is good to explore. Most of the buildings have been restored, though the North Gate and the Flag Tower are still original. The North Gate is a nice place for people watching; locals come here to do photoshoots with flowers. The bunkers that were used during Vietnamwar give additional historic value. Local schools come to the citadel for day trips. The kids might ask you to do a short interview to practice their English. I thoroughly enjoyed that. I visited here on a weekday and it wasn't too busy. Even though entry is ticketed (100.000 VND), this doesn't seem to be ensured too strictly (as in: you could easily walk past the entry gate without buying a ticket). Also please be aware of a scam that specifically is targeting tourists. I was approached by a man asking me where I came from. I'd considered that he was part of the school trip. First he asked me to fill a questionnaire. Then he indicated he was collecting donations for the Red Cross, even showing me a (fake) badge. He showed me a notebook with all previous donations. It showed big amounts, like $20, €40, 500.000 VND. He proceeded asking a donation from me too. I just gave a small amount (50.000 VND) though he tried to get more. Then he quickly buzzed off and I realized I was scammed. Please be aware of this scam.

Hanoi Corner Restaurant is a fabulous new dining spot in Hanoi that offers fantastic food and excellent service. The attentive staff, including Vinh and Nghia, go above and beyond to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable dining experience. They provide careful and attentive service, with Vinh even demonstrating how to prepare more complicated dishes like rice rolls. The restaurant boasts a nice ambiance and is kept very clean.
All the food was delicious, especially the vegetables were really fresh!!! I happened to visit this place because it was close to my accommodation, and I was very satisfied. It was clean, and all the staff were friendly. The calm atmosphere was so relaxing. The shrimp spring rolls is my number one dish! Pyke, the server, was so pleasant and helpful, and I had a wonderful time. Thank you.

This is our third night in Hanoi, and we finally got to taste the authentic caramelised pork in Vietnam — and it was absolutely worth the wait! 🇻🇳✨ We visited Hanoi Corner Restaurant on Hang Bac Street, where my husband and I enjoyed the caramelised pork with quail eggs and pork spare ribs with honey sauce. Both dishes were rich in flavor, comforting, and truly delicious. A big thank you to Nam, the staff who served us with such kindness and genuine hospitality. He made our dining experience even more special. Tomorrow we’ll be flying back to our hometown, but this meal and the warmth we felt here will definitely stay in our hearts. ❤️

Bùi Viện Street, often called the “backpacker street” of Saigon, is one of those places that never really sleeps. Located in the heart of District 1, it’s a chaotic mix of neon lights, loud music, and a constant stream of both locals and travelers. If you’re looking for energy, this street delivers it in full force. The moment you step in, you’re greeted by rows of bars, pubs, restaurants, and street food vendors, each trying to pull you in with drink deals, live music, and the promise of a fun night. It’s the kind of place where you can start with a cheap beer at a roadside stool, then end up in a rooftop bar or dancing at a club until morning. That being said, Bùi Viện isn’t for everyone. The noise, crowds, and occasional rowdiness can be overwhelming, especially on weekends when the street is packed shoulder-to-shoulder. It’s best enjoyed if you come with the right mindset: open to a little chaos, willing to meet people from all around the world, and ready to soak in the wild atmosphere. Love it or hate it, Bùi Viện Street is an unforgettable part of Saigon nightlife—a must-visit at least once for the experience.

Nestled in a crumbling French-colonial house, Loading T Café is a hidden gem located at the border of the French Quarter and Hanoi Old Quarter. The café's quiet atmosphere and fast internet make it an ideal spot for both work and leisure. Its vintage furniture, patterned flooring, and plant-filled corners exude old-world charm, creating an authentic ambiance.
Tucked away in a quiet alley of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, this cozy little café feels like a step into a dreamy Parisian corner. Soft French music plays in the background, vintage wooden furniture fills the space, and warm lighting creates an inviting, intimate vibe. The star here is the egg coffee — rich, creamy, and perfectly balanced. It’s one of the best we’ve tasted in the city. The avocado smoothie is equally impressive: smooth, lightly sweet, and refreshingly unique. A perfect spot to relax, escape the crowds, and soak in the charm of old Hanoi with a touch of French soul.

A hidden gem tucked away in a charming old house, offering a cozy and nostalgic vibe that feels like stepping into old Hanoi. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with vintage decor, wooden furniture, and soft lighting that perfectly complements the experience. Their coffee is amazing—highly recommend the iced coconut coffee! It’s incredibly refreshing with just the right balance of coconut flavor—not too overpowering, just perfect. The yoghurt coffee, on the other hand, is a bit too rich for my taste, but it might be a hit for those who love indulgent flavors. A delightful spot to relax and soak in the charm of Hanoi while enjoying a great cup of coffee!

This was probably our favorite cafe on our trip to Hanoi food wise. We originally checked out this place because of how many times we heard online that this was the spot with the tastiest egg coffee, which they were not over hyping at all. This place felt slightly hidden since from the street we couldn't see any Loading T cafe signage so we entered a building that looked the most similar to the google photos which required us to climb up some stairs and enter the building before seeing anything indicating this was indeed Loading T cafe. The cafe had a chill vibe that felt like stepping into another time. The staff were very kind and welcoming, after taking our order they gave us complimentary water and tea. And I will confirm yet again the iced egg coffee was soooo good. Walked in for a taste and couldn't leave without buying another one as well as their cacao egg cream. These drinks were truly delicious we ordered them for takeaway and just couldn't help but stay a while longer enjoying the atmosphere while savoring the drinks. We also greatly appreciated how when ordering the egg coffees they give you a paper that explains the best way to experience drinking the egg coffee so that it taste the best. It's also important to know that when drinking the regular egg coffee or the cacao egg cream they are meant to be drunk in different ways which we discovered by having one of the servers so kindly correct us on how to appropriately drink the cacao egg cream. 10/10 very much worth the hype!!
Marisa R — Google review
A lovely tucked away haven in the middle of Hanoi. The building is a reclaimed old colonial structure, with no visible signs outside of the cafe’s whereabouts. It feels like a “if you know, you know” kind of find. After weeks in Vietnam and dozens of egg coffees, I can firmly say this place does it best. The egg cream is also so marshmallow like in texture and flavour with subtle cinnamon to add depth. The servers are always so gracious and kind. There’s just a beautiful atmosphere. I’ve been here every morning for almost a week and I’m still blown away every time!
Rebecca L — Google review
It's located near the Michelin guide Pho. It's kinda hidden in an old building, you have to follow the stairs to reach the cafe. It's kinda homey inside, not too many tables but full of people. Ordered 3 coffees, the Iced Egg Coffee, Yogurt Coffee and Coconut Coffee. The Coconut Coffee is blended, very good in a hot weather. Forgot to take a picture of the Iced Egg Coffee because it's done in like 5 minutes 😂 Overall it's a good coffee. But do bear in mind they're a bit crowded and it's not a lot of table available, so it's not a place to sit around for a long time.
Melody S — Google review
Like a step back in time, Loading T offers a slower pace, that is if you can find it. Look through a rusty gate, go left up a crumbling stone staircase, then at the top, chose to sit left or right, as straight ahead is another shop. The atmosphere is an eclectic collection of furnishings with a hippie feel. We had the egg coffee and the black coffee. And although we've had better, we appreciated the totality of the experience.
R K — Google review
It's difficult to find a coffee shop in Hanoi that offers both good coffee and a pleasant atmosphere, so come here twice. As a person who like sweet coffee, I should suggest Saigon Coffee. They have lots of options, but it's always best to ask about what's inside and whether the coffee is a little sweet. Along with a vintage vibe, the service and atmosphere here may truly help you relax. The best coffee store in Hanoi, in my opinion.

Masjid Al Noor in Hanoi is the only mosque in northern Vietnam, with its construction dating back to 1885 by the Indian community. The mosque reflects significant Indian cultural influence and officially opened to the public in 1890. It features separate prayer spaces for men and women, clean ablution areas, a dedicated area for women with amenities like fans, water dispensers, and Islamic books.
We arrived at Mosque on Eid Adha. Folks there were preparing food, but we didn't stay. Came back a few days later just to do haha prayers and looking for breakfast within the area. Since it was still early, the shops are not open. However, we met Pak Andi outside the mosque, who gladly helped make a sandwich with the baguette we bought near the mosque. The muslimah prayer place is on the right side as u get into the mosque. It has a clean toilet and ablution place separately. Do visit if you are in the area.

Amazing space In The heart of Hanoi for Muslims. Very conveniently located and many halal restaurants nearby. There is ample space and I can see the place has had a lot of effort behind it. There is much work that’s needed but the community have done an excellent job Alhamdulillah. There is a women’s prayer space also which is excellent for travellers to the area coming with family. The brother hand d me a lungi when I walked in as I was wearing shorts. 😊 From the many people inside I can see this mosque is a foundation to the local community and prayer times were busy. It’s a blessing to have access to the masjid whilst travelling through these parts of the world. Having just come from Laos I can appreciate what it means to be able to walk into a masjid in such a busy part of the country try where Islam is not the dominant religion.

Name: Masjid Al Noor Location: Hanoi, Vietnam 🇻🇳 Masjid Al Noor is the only mosque in the Capital of Vietnam, and for more than 100 years, the masjid has been a weekly prayer destination for local and foreign Muslims. In the early 19th century, Indian merchants came to Vietnam to live and trade. To meet religious needs, in 1885, the Indian community here began to build Masjid Al Noor. In 1890, the masjid was officially put into operation. The Mosque has experienced many ups and downs in history. In the years 1964 - 1973, the Mosque had to be closed because of the war. However, the Mosque has never been bombings.

The only masjid in Hanoi. It was pretty big, not as small as I thought. The masjid is clean and the woman section is equipped with an attached toilet/wudhu' place, which is somwthing I really appreciate. If you guys stop to visit/pray, don't forget to donate some money for the maintenance and development of the masjid 🤍

Stepping into this mosque feels like stepping out of the world for a moment - absolute peace and calm everywhere. The atmosphere is so serene it literally resets your mind. A place where you can actually breathe and reflect, not rush and stress. And I have to say this: the restrooms? Surprisingly clean. Impressively clean, actually. You know I'm brutally honest when it comes to hygiene — and they've nailed it here. Everything well-maintained, organized, and respectful for visitors. Overall, it's a beautiful, tranquil space that gives you exactly what a mosque should: a moment of quiet, clarity, and comfort.

An old mosque in the busy streets of Hanoi. I hope the Muslim community and visiting Muslim tourists can help make this place more alive and meaningful. Beyond being a place of worship, it has the potential to become a centre where locals and tourists can learn about Islam and appreciate its beauty.

This historical gem showcases traditional Vietnamese architecture with its elegant octagonal pavilion and beautifully landscaped gardens. Dedicated to Buddha and revered Saints, it holds significant cultural importance due to its association with Zen Master Tu Dao Hanh during the flourishing Ly Dynasty.
Lang Pagoda is a peaceful and historic gem in Hanoi. Tucked away from the city's hustle and bustle, it offers a serene atmosphere perfect for reflection and relaxation. The pagoda's traditional architecture, intricate carvings, and beautiful courtyard create a sense of timeless beauty. Walking through its grounds, you can feel the deep spiritual and cultural heritage it holds. It's a wonderful place to visit if you're looking for tranquility and a glimpse into Vietnam's rich Buddhist traditions.

An interesting space; good feng-shui and nice energy, but sullen staff (??) in the temple at the rear. Regardless, it's a cultural and historic jewel which should be on all visitor`s to do list in Ha`noi. It's strangely interesting how such places seem omitted from the tourist trail. It's notable for it's architecure, it's layout and design, for its overall aesthetics and for its backwards glance to times gone by.

Lang Pagoda, known as Chieu Thien Tu Legend has it that after Tu Dao Hanh died, he told Zen master Nguyen Minh Khong that he would be reincarnated as the son of Sung Hien Hau - the younger brother of King Ly Nhan Tong. This king had no children so he gave the throne to Sung Hien Hau's son, Ly Duong Hoan, who was the reincarnated Tu Dao Hanh, becoming King Ly Than Tong. Legend has it that he passed away on March 7, Binh Than year (1116) at Sai Son mountain temple. Quoc Oai is the name of the district, which is Quoc Oai district today, the name of the mountain is Phat Tich. Tu Dao Hanh came to visit that mountain, saw a rock in a cave with a human footprint, and put his foot in it, just right: according to legend, that was where Dao Hanh left his body. Previously, the wife of the Marquis of Chongxian, Du Thi, was pregnant, and when she came here, she was in labor for a long time but could not give birth. The Marquis remembered what Dao Hanh had told him before, and sent someone to report on horseback. Dao Hanh immediately changed his clothes, bathed, and went into a cave to shed his body and died. The villagers thought it was strange, so they put Dao Hanh's body in a shrine to worship. Today, Phat Tich Mountain is that place. Every year, in the spring, on the 7th day of the 3rd lunar month, sons and daughters gather at the temple, a famous festival in the area. Later generations falsely spread that it was the monk's death anniversary (Dao Hanh's body was burned by the Ming people around the Yongle year of the Ming Dynasty, and the villagers rebuilt a statue to worship it as before, and it still exists today) In June, Ly Duong Hoan, the son of Marquis of Chongxian, was born, and this was the future king Ly Than Tong. Later, Ly Than Tong suffered from a strange disease, the king's body grew tiger hair and roared like a tiger, and the mandarins had to use a golden cage to lock the king up. The person who cured him was the Great Master Nguyen Minh Khong. In Hanoi, there is Lang Pagoda, whose Chinese name is Chieu Thien Tu, built during the reign of King Ly Anh Tong (son of Ly Than Tong). The pagoda worships Zen master Tu Dao Hanh and Ly Than Tong. Next to it is Nen Pagoda, whose Chinese name is Dan Co Tu, built on the foundation of Tu Dao Hanh's old house.

Lang Pagoda, Hanoi, Vietnam 2022 Lang Pagoda has the typical architecture of Vietnamese pagodas with two long corridors connecting the first and the last compartments to form a rectangular frame surrounding an architectural work in the middle, which is usually the most important part of the pagoda like the worshiping chamber or incense burning place. The pagoda has a three archway with the main arch consisting of four columns with the architecture similar to the gate in the ancient royal palace. Getting through the gate is the courtyard paved with Bat Trang brick, leading to an octagonal house, the unique part of the pagoda. Located in the middle of the pagoda, the octagonal house is where the statue of monk Tu Dao Hanh is placed and worshiped. With a two-level roof, the house is also a sophisticated sculpture artwork, featuring four phoenixes dancing on the top and eight dragons flying around the roof representing eight reigns of the Ly dynasty. Inside the chamber, the wall features various paintings depicting different themes. Moreover, the pagoda is a large, harmonious and symmetrical architectural complex with 100 compartments in an airy green space of gardens and old big trees, creating a beautiful tranquil place blended with nature. Therefore, it was regarded as the pagoda with the most beautiful greenery in Thang Long. Today, it is one of the largest pagodas in inner Hanoi.
Lucas T — Google review
The outermost pagoda gate consists of 4 square columns with three curved roofs that do not hang on the column but are attached to the column's ribs, the middle roof is higher than the roofs on the two sides. Through the gate is a courtyard paved with Bat Trang tiles, in the middle of the yard is a stone collapse, where palanquins are placed during festivals

Nestled right next to the stunning St. Joseph Cathedral, Godmother is a delightful café that promises an unforgettable experience for dessert lovers and coffee aficionados alike. With its inviting ambiance, you can sip on a perfectly brewed iced latte with oat milk while gazing out at the cathedral's magnificent architecture through expansive windows. Super cool vibe! The building is super modern and the inside is beautiful. The service was great and the ambiance was super chill. I really enjoyed this place! A spacious restaurant next to the church, the main tourist attraction of Hanoi. They have spacious menu for brunch from classic eggs Benedict to traditional Bo Ne (I thought that it’s supposed to be beef steak but in the restaurant’s interpretation it was pork, too greasy to my taste). In general it’s a good place to have a rest with the AC from walking around the Old Quarter.
Tina T — Google review
Came for lunch for the first time after trying out dessert a few times before. Quite dissapointed to be honest. Menu has variety but the overall taste is salty, from burgers to duck waffle to mac ‘n cheese. Drinks are average, we tried kombucha, mocktails, milkshakes,… the flavors are just meh. The biggest turn down was the timing. We ordered things to share and also individual plates, food did not come til 30m later, and only 2 dish each time. After half of our food came, it took another 20m for the rest to arrived, and we noticed some surrounding tables had the same problem. My friend had to wait 15m after everyone else had their food for hers to arrived. GM should have a good look at their kitchen system, since mine is not the first review to point that problem out.

Great atmosphere. Nice and cool inside. I asked to sit on the second floor but this was not allowed - they have times in which the upper floor opens which is a new concept to me. Would be nice if I could have sat upstairs. Staff don’t pay much attention to when you’re ready to order. Other than this they are polite, and kind. They also speak a good amount of English, well done to them for learning another language. Savoury pancakes were good 👍🏽 the bacon is very tough to chew, couldn’t cut through it with the knife. Butter was good! Tastes as though something has been infused with it, very nice touch. Avocado toast was average - lacking simple seasonings such as salt and pepper. The garlic black pepper sauce? Did not have much flavour. Beverages are more expensive than most cafe’s. They are of standard quality, not something they specialise in.
Louena V — Google review
High price small portion (one portion of $10 - $14 was just enough for a 5 year old) Staff were poorly trained when it comes to service but the food quality was alright. Best thing about this place is the view to the cathedral. You'll be suprised that you have to pay 5% service charge when you have to serve yourself getting utensils out of the cupboard because staffs wouldn't think you need plate and utensils to enjoy your meal
Mia M — Google review
Service has really gone downhill. I ordered 3 different things that all were not available (and were all only notified to me after 15 minutes). Should’ve said upfront what they didn’t have to not waste customers’ time. Used to really like Godmother, but the one in Hanoi is not up to par.
Lan N — Google review
I have been ordering online from Godmother Hanoi for a few years yet rarely been there in person. So I decided to take a visit after a while, and while the quality of their cakes was definitely a highlight, unfortunately, the overall experience was far from satisfying. I feel compelled to share my feedback in the hopes of constructive improvement. To start, the service was a bit of a letdown. The person selling street food next door was incredibly rude when I tried to park my vehicle. I understand parking can be tricky, but her attitude was uncalled for - she even mentioned that the restaurant manager is harsh and unlikely to care about customer concerns. This left me with a very negative impression before I even stepped inside. Adding to the frustration, I noticed that the street vendor had no issue using the restaurant’s parking lot on the pavement for her own customers, yet the restaurant staff didn’t step in to assist with parking or address the situation. It felt like a lack of coordination and consideration for patrons who were simply trying to find a place to park. When it comes to the food, I was disappointed with the limited selection available. The restaurant’s online menu and the in-person offerings were not aligned, which created confusion. When I inquired about the lack of options, I was told that the reasoning behind it was that “available items should be sold out first before new stock is added.” While I understand the logic, this approach feels a bit restrictive, especially when customers are left with limited choices. Given the number of negative reviews I’ve seen about Godmother Hanoi, I had hoped things would have improved by now, but it seems like little has changed. I appreciate the quality of the food, but the lack of attention to customer service and limited menu are issues that need addressing. The higher price range and 5% service charge were never a problem to me until customer service is barely on the table. Sadly, based on this experience, I won’t be returning.

Long Biên Bridge, a stunning historical landmark in Hanoi, is not just an architectural marvel but also a vibrant hub of activity. As night falls, the area transforms into a lively gathering spot where street vendors offer delicious local snacks and goods. Beneath the bridge lies a hidden gem—a lush island teeming with banana farmers who supply fresh produce to city markets.
After a day of exploring the town, we decided to unwind at Bar Dinh, choosing to dine and lounge without prior reservations. To our pleasant surprise, we were seated immediately on a Saturday night. The food exceeded expectations, with standout dishes including a well-prepared pasta, a flavorful chicken entrée, and a perfectly cooked pork dish. The bar area is visually stunning, with beautiful ceiling ornaments adding to the ambiance. A live band provided entertainment, and while the music was excellent, the volume was overwhelming, particularly in the seating area adjacent to the bar. The excessively loud sound left my ears ringing after a prolonged stay.

More than a bridge, it is a part of Hanoi's history and our life. P/S: very old and nearly collapse 🤔, feels like it is shaking when walking on it. Pretty frighten at first honestly 😅

The square is a favorite gathering place for locals and tourists, especially during weekends when it becomes a part of the walking street. It is a prime location for the venue of significant cultural events such as the New Year's Eve countdown. It is one of the best places to chill out in Hanoi at night.

Really cool rusty bridge but very hard to get onto by foot. A better option would be to visit the cafe just next to it for an aerial view of the bridge, as well as the rest of Hanoi.

Long Bien Bridge, a historic landmark in Hanoi, Vietnam, is a must-visit for any traveler interested in experiencing the city's rich history and vibrant culture. Built in 1898-1902 by the French, Long Bien Bridge is one of the oldest bridges in Hanoi. The bridge's design, with its intricate latticework and towering steel arches, is a testament to 19th-century engineering. The bridge's unique blend of history, architecture, and daily life makes it a favorite spot for photographers.

Bun cha is super good, highly recommend for foreigners. - Food: one serving has lots of meat and may be too much for local person. However the meat is well seasoned as well as the fish source. - Price: a bit high for locals ~70k/ meal - Note: do not accept bank transfer. No air conditioner. Overall: 4/5

Good place with a lake view and a cup of coffee. Various shops available for buying coffee, souvenirs, clothes and various things. BARGAINING is the key.
Amit B — Google review
I went during lunch hour and it was extremely crowded. People don’t queue and just enter find a space and seat (mostly local). So as a foreigner, just find a space and seat. They are all sharing desk. It was warm inside and very packed so do expect you get bump or hit (no sorry and don’t get offended). Eventually I ordered the one without the sausage (₫30k) but ended they serve with the sausage (₫35k). Not because the price, but I don’t take the sausage so it will be wasted. The waitress gave me a light sauce (not fish sauce) and when I ask for it, they looks so surprised “you want?”… well, it was the specialty so I would like to try it. Mix the fish sauce with some lime and sugar to your flavour. The fish sauce have a strong smell and taste. It was also salty so make sure to add sugar to balance it. Mix everything well and dip the ingredients into the fish sauce. Dip according to your taste. Leaves balance the oily fried foods and the taste.

26Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum

Historical landmark
Cemetery
Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum is a significant historical site and tourist attraction in Vietnam. It holds the embalmed remains of Ho Chi Minh, the Vietnamese leader, and offers insights into his life and the country's liberation process under his leadership. Visitors are encouraged to explore Ba Dinh Square, where Vietnam's First Independence Day was celebrated, as well as other nearby attractions such as Ho Chi Minh Museum, House on Stilts, Presidential Palace, and One Pillar Pagoda.
Visiting the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is a truly meaningful and memorable experience for anyone traveling to Hanoi. Located in Ba Dinh Square, this place is not only a famous tourist attraction but also a sacred historical site where people come to pay respect to President Ho Chi Minh – the beloved leader of the Vietnamese people. The architecture of the mausoleum is solemn and impressive, built with grey stone and inspired by traditional Vietnamese and Soviet styles. The atmosphere around the square is calm and respectful. When entering the mausoleum, everything is kept quiet and orderly. Security is tight but polite, and visitors are expected to dress modestly and behave respectfully. Inside, visitors have the opportunity to see President Ho Chi Minh’s embalmed body preserved in a glass case. It’s a powerful moment – not just for Vietnamese, but for foreigners too – to witness the lasting legacy of a man who played such a vital role in Vietnam’s history. One thing to note is that the mausoleum is only open in the mornings and closed on Mondays and Fridays, so planning ahead is necessary. There may be a queue, especially during holidays, but the line moves quite efficiently.
Trần H — Google review
A fascinating and respectful place to visit. The complex is well maintained and the atmosphere is calm and dignified. The queue was long but moved quickly, and the guards were very professional. It took around two hours in total, including security checks and walking through the site. It was quite hot and humid, so bring water and dress comfortably. A meaningful and highly recommended experience to learn about an important part of Vietnam’s history.
F S — Google review
Beautiful grounds with the palace and mausoleum. We went right when it opened at 7:30 and there were no crowds. It was easier to appreciate the grandness of it all without tons of your groups. Much of the grounds are blocked off, but guards were friendly and made it clear where to go.
Leslie M — Google review
I'm Anthony, and these are my kneecaps. I was allowed in. My shorts were just touching the tops of my kneecaps. I asked the guard if it was a bit higher, then demonstrated to him, would I be let in? He said no. The security is strict at the metal detector. Ba Dinh Square itself is free to visit. The Ho Chi Minh Museum and the Stilt House area are an additional charge. Viewing the HCM mausoleum from the outside is free. There was a very nice volunteer tour orginazation giving free tours. Definitely recommend reaching out to them.

I so loved the deep culture of this place and respect the Vietnamese people give to their first president. He is often known as an Uncle too in every Vietnamese family. Good place to visit and see once when at Vietnam
Simon M — Google review
Visited the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum — a truly respectful and historical site in Hanoi. Entry is *free of charge*, and no tickets are required. The atmosphere is calm and well-organized, with clear security procedures. It’s a must-visit to understand Vietnam’s history and pay respects to their beloved leader. Dress modestly and arrive early as it can get crowded.
Chun — Google review
Nice place to visit - well laid out wide avenues with the parliament building, ministry of defence and then main attraction - the mausoleum are very good. I believe parade happens here on special occasions like independence day and other special national events day. That must be a grand spectacle!

Awesome place to learn and appreciate the impact and contribution of Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam. It is a large complex so be prepared to walk. Note that security is super strict - dress modestly, keep phones in your bags during security check, follow the line, no taking of pictures inside the mausoleum.

Nestled in the heart of Láng Hạ, Nét Huế offers a delightful culinary journey through authentic Vietnamese cuisine, particularly celebrated for its specialties from Hue. This charming eatery stands out among its peers in the Nam Tu Liem area, drawing food enthusiasts eager to savor dishes like Bun Bo Hue and Nem Lui. The menu is designed with both locals and international visitors in mind, ensuring that every dish is approachable yet bursting with flavor.
Great Vietnamese dishes and friendly staff. The prices are just a bit upper than an average local restaurant but you can find really fancy dishes. 5 stars also for design.

For a no-frills restaurant, the food quality - and especially for my absolute fave Hue cuisine - they've nailed this!!! As authentic as you can get outside of Hue! We ordered the Sticky Rice Balls with Shrimp and Crackling Base, Banh Bot Loc (must have!), Steamed Rice Cakes, Hue Spring Rolls and a portion of the Grilled Pork Skewer Platter. Super flavourful. Love love, love it! ❤️

Nice Hue Food. Chicken porridge is quite good.

Net Hue in Lang Ha is, i think, better than other branches of Net Hue around Nam Tu Liem area. You'll be able to enjoy variety of Vietnamese dishes, but most people would come here for Bun Bo Hue, Nem Lui, and some "banh" (e.g. Banh Tom). I think for foreigners, all is "safe" to eat. I mean they are not that strange. I personally believe that the taste is perfect for oversea pallets. The service is acceptable, but as you would see from one of the photos i took, they just drop the trash on the floor (that's very Vietnamese way of bassing tables). Price is really affordable. Only 2dollars For a basic bowl of beef noodle soup. You can upgrade it if you want and they'll add more meat balls and pig toes in it. 😜😜. Net Hue is my Go-to Vietnamese resto. It's safe and affordable.

During my recent visit to Viet Kitchen Restaurant & Rooftop Bar, I was captivated by the enchanting atmosphere and stunning views it offers. Nestled on the top floor, this newly opened gem provides a perfect backdrop for any occasion, whether it's a romantic dinner or a lively celebration. The attentive staff, led by the wonderful Howard, ensured that every detail was taken care of—from beautifully arranged settings for special events to delicious dishes made fresh to order.
Had the best experience here on my first night in Hanoi!! Howard was phenomenal - truly made the time spent here so amazing, he had great recommendations for food and activities we should try out while in town. We got the Vietnamese pancake, bamboo beef and 5-spice roasted chicken and all were sooo good! The ambience and view of the lake were a wonderful touch. Highly recommend a visit here :)

Restaurant
Phuong Nam Restaurant was born out of a deep appreciation for the Southern Vietnamese lifestyle and culture, aiming to introduce its unique flavors to the people in the North. The restaurant offers meticulously prepared specialty dishes with exotic spices, carefully selected from exclusive ingredients. Visitors can savor authentic South Vietnamese cuisine, including heavenly hotpot broth available for purchase. Despite some feedback about service, patrons praise the delicious "Banh trang thit heo" and a wide range of affordable options.
Gorgeous food in South Vietnamese cuisine. The hotpot broth was especially heavenly. Apparently they sell it in bottles. I have to go back to buy one to take home before leaving Vietnam. I only wish the waiters weren't so rude. The guy walked away in the middle of the sentence while our Vietnamese host was trying to order food or drinks. He just walked away without listening to the full order for four people. That was a bit odd. But food is definitely worth visiting again.

Crowded and louded. But the lady owner is very beautiful. And the food, especially the ca keo hotpot, is great. Except those, other things are normal. Just go there for the hotpot and its closeness to my house while my pregnant wife did not want to waste her heavy breath and time on travelling.

"Bánh tráng thịt heo" is best ever I've eaten. You will have a dish with many kinds of vegetables, fresh rice noodle, dried rice paper, sliced pork belly or pork leg and a bowl of sauce. Pork meat can be boiled or roasted depends on your order. Dried rice paper and sauce are special. You need to roll vegetables, noodle, meat in rice paper and enjoy with sauce.

Khue Van Cac, built in 1805, holds historical significance as a place for reviewing students' essays. It's now an iconic symbol of Hanoi and is even featured on the 100,000 Vietnamese Dong banknote. The site offers a peaceful and spacious environment with lush greenery. While wheelchair accessibility is limited, the stunning views make it worth visiting. Visitors can explore this ancient and historic location to gain insights into Vietnam's culture and history.
**Khuê Văn Các: A Timeless Symbol of Hanoi’s Academic Heritage** Situated within the historic Văn Miếu–Quốc Tử Giám complex, Khuê Văn Các is an exquisite pavilion that stands as a symbol of Vietnam’s dedication to learning and culture. Located in the heart of Hanoi, this site was originally built in 1070 as a temple to honor Confucius and became home to Vietnam’s first national university, Quốc Tử Giám. Khuê Văn Các, constructed in 1805, remains one of the most iconic architectural highlights of this cultural treasure. The pavilion’s design is a harmonious blend of traditional Vietnamese architecture and Confucian principles. Elevated on four sturdy stone pillars, its wooden structure features intricate carvings and latticed windows resembling the sun’s rays, signifying enlightenment and knowledge. The tiled roof and red-painted wood add to its timeless beauty. Surrounded by lush gardens, serene courtyards, and ancient banyan trees, Khuê Văn Các offers a tranquil atmosphere that inspires reflection. The site also houses stone steles inscribed with the names of successful scholars from imperial examinations, emphasizing the deep respect for education in Vietnamese culture. As a UNESCO-recognized site, Khuê Văn Các is not only a historical monument but also a vibrant reminder of Vietnam’s intellectual legacy, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring Hanoi.

The Khue Van Cac was built in 1805 and is one of five gates that divide the inner area of Quoc Tu Giam into five different spaces. Khue Van Cac is considered a symbol of Vietnamese culture and in 1997, Khue Van Cac was officially named the symbol of the capital of Hanoi. Designed in the traditional Vietnamese architectural style, Khue Van Cac has four square pillars with elaborate patterns on the ground floor and is open on all four sides. There are four round windows on four sides of the red attic. The roof is made up of two overlapping roofs, top and bottom. The more you look closely, the more unique and attractive Confucian architecture attracts your attention. After passing Khuê Văn Các, a large square well spreads out in front of you, and on the left and right are altars of 72 people who were once the greatest disciples of Confucius.

Nestled near the bustling Hanoi Zoo, Voi Phuc Temple, also known as the Kneeling Elephants Temple, is a captivating historical site dedicated to Prince Linh Lang. This ancient temple, constructed by Ly Thai Tong over 950 years ago, marks the legendary spot where a mighty elephant knelt for the prince to mount and head into battle. As one of Thang Long's Four Sacred Temples, it boasts an impressive and majestic appearance that draws visitors seeking both history and tranquility.
One of the four guarding temples of Thang Long, that were built in four directions of Thang Long to protect the capital from malevolent spirits. This temple guards the West Gate of the citadel, was built in the 11 centry to worship Prince Linh Lang, son of King Ly Thanh Tong and his concubine, who made great contributions to the war against invaders. The temple has a spacious courtyard, surrounded by lush greenery and near Thu Le Lake. The atmostphere is peaceful and tranquil. I visited this temple at noon, but the weather was cool and nice.

Evangelical church
The Hanoi Evangelical Church, part of the Vietnam Evangelical Church in the Northern region and affiliated with the Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA), has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1916. The church's origins can be traced back to William Charles Cadman's founding of Protestantism in Hanoi. The church building itself was constructed between 1919 and 1926 on a land lot auctioned by Cadman.
Wonderful church. Love their worship that is heard in the neighbourhood. I can hear the worship and praise if i can't go to church when I'm not well. Thank God 🙏🏻
Grace L — Google review
As expected, instead of acknowledging and taking responsibility for their own selfish actions, the church management chose to delete public feedback from their own neighbors. Even more pathetic when they desperately dumped fake reviews to save their reputation right after getting called out. This church is notorious for bullying it’s neighbors for decades. They constantly cause serious noise pollution by playing extremely heavy loud music OUTDOORS for hours on end. If that is not enough, they hire speakers to yell and scream into microphones during their deranged megachurch events. You cannot begin to understand the torture and I invite everyone to come visit our neighborhood to feel our walls and furniture shake for hours & have your eardums assaulted for hours even with windows fully closed. It affects everyones quality of living. This is unacceptable behavior towards neighbors. As you can see below, they cowardly resorted to using fake reviews to attack anyone giving negative feedback, even making up lies about how much their loud music is ‘appreciated’ in the neighborhood. Instead of spending money to build soundproof walls, they installed sheet metal all over the wall facing our houses last year, blocking out sunlight for at least 3-4 houses. They also left debris and dust all over our alley after that selfish act. Within a few weeks, they cut one of our neighbors tree without seeking permission. This review is for the new visitors and true christians to think hard before supporting/patronizing such a big bully who does not do as they preach. Nobody should be surprised because they even had public fistfights couple years back between their organizations that went viral on social media. A bunch of violent people terrorizing neighbors who are simply minding their own business in the name of greedy expansion. Let it be known this neighborhood will never be intimidated. Feel free to censor our comments and feedbacks all you want. We will begin documenting and reporting any violations to the relevant authorities, lawyers and social media if these selfish acts persists in the future.

Nestled on Giang Vo Street at number 257, Cơm niêu KOMBO is a delightful spot that’s hard to miss thanks to its large and clear signage. The interior boasts a clean and spacious atmosphere with various dining table arrangements, making it an inviting place for meals.
(Translated by Google) - Food: Clay pot rice costs from 85k or more. The chicken rice I ordered was very delicious and flavorful, the sauce was very aromatic, but the portion was a bit smaller than I expected. There are also many dishes with a variety of price ranges on the menu. Overall, I was very satisfied with the meal - Staff: Service quality is extremely good. The staff who assist with ordering and serving are very fast, friendly and positive - Restaurant space: Clean, airy, with wifi, beautifully decorated to create sympathy for people who come to eat Highly recommend this restaurant for anyone who intends to eat around the Giang Vo area (Original) - Đồ ăn: Cơm niêu giá từ 85k trở lên.

(Translated by Google) 🌸 Location: the shop is located on Giang Vo street, house number 257 is quite easy to find. You can see the shop from the side because the sign is extremely large and clear. The space inside is quite good, with dining tables divided into different types and quite clean 🌸 Price: compared to other rice shops, the price is also high, about 75-85k per serving depending on the type of food and depending on whether the rice is burned on 1 or 2 sides. 🌸 Quality: For those who like to eat burnt rice, this is a restaurant that everyone also likes. The food is good, there are some types of bbq meat that have a rich flavor and are quite delicious (Original) 🌸 Vị trí: quán nằm phố giảng võ, số nhà 257 khá là dễ tìm nhé.

I don't know what other places are like so I can't compare, this is just my personal feeling, the sour soup with minced meat sprouts is a bit cold, the sprouts are still raw, the broth is salty. Boneless chicken feet with lemongrass and chili are okay. The rice is okay, the dishes are okay (Original) Đồ ăn mình thấy không đặc sắc lắm và giá lại cao. Cafe
Ca Phe Sua Nong, a Vietnamese coffee specialty, is made by using sweetened condensed milk for a creamy texture. It's recommended to use ground Vietnamese coffee and the right filter for an authentic taste. The locally grown, dark roast beans are brewed with a small drip filter, resulting in a strong and flavorful cup of coffee when mixed with condensed milk. This drink provides an energizing boost. Enjoy it at a cafe overlooking the cathedral while people-watching and soaking up the vibrant atmosphere.
The super cafe opens soon after 6:00am and what a great start to the morning, watching the old quarter wake up with the bells of the cathedral chiming. Great Vietnamese coffee gently sweetened with condense milk served in a bowl of hot water, to keep the coffee warm. The staff are friendly and efficient.

We always saw people enjoying iced drinks and sunflower seeds and finally had a moment where we could partake. We ordered two kumquat drinks with sunflower seeds. The drinks were 30k VND each, and the sunflower seeds were 20k. It was a really enjoyable setting to visit and people watch - especially being across from the church and it being a weekend. Many tour groups were coming in and out of the area. Not a quiet atmosphere by any means, just a really great vibe. The only (possible) downside was that the wait staff kept their pipe tethered to the tree that's right in front. So occasionally we would get a big puff of smoke in our direction. It wasn't a huge problem, just something to note.
Jessica S — Google review
DO NOT COME HERE FOR ITS POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE we ordered 6 drinks and one of them had a fly in the drink, we realized as we drank half way and found it floating in the cream. I didnt get to take a photo as we thought they would be kind enough and understanding to provide a refund or a new drink. We went downstairs and spoke with the guy who served us via google translate to negotiate. However they said it is OUR FAULT and insisted that the fly flew in while we were not looking at the drink. However there was 6 of us sitting around the table the entire time, and no fly flying around this as we are sitting and talking to each other. You would think that a place like this with such a popular spot with so many customers would be nice and understanding to solve this situation regardless of who's "fault" it is. In fact, the situation happened while we were dining in, so as long as it happened on the property of the store, I don't think any paying customer deserves a fly in the drink without any form of resolution. The service attitude is really poor. Would never come again.

Hiếu Coffee is a charming little spot that embodies the essence of street life in Hanoi. Nestled right in front of the cathedral, it offers an intimate view of this iconic landmark while you relax on low plastic stools. The atmosphere is casual and inviting, perfect for sipping on refreshing iced lemon tea or enjoying a cup of coffee as you watch locals and tourists alike visit the church.
Great kumquat tea and the guy working there was really nice to me…

If you have a weak stomach beware ! I think they use tap water to dilute the juices or tap water to produce ice etc. I after 1 day I went to hospital because of food poisoning. The other places I ate and drank are in a good condition and I know them for years. But it was my first time here.
Len K — Google review
The owner of this place really needs to train those two staff members. The man in the white jacket made an obscene hand gesture toward a group of foreign elementary school students who were on a field trip to the cathedral — for no reason at all. When I asked him why he did that, he couldn’t understand a single word of English but somehow knew how to use English swear words. Another staff member who spoke some English came over and apologized, but then the man in the black T-shirt also made the same rude gesture. Such behavior shows a complete lack of basic manners. Most Vietnamese people are incredibly kind, which makes it even more disappointing to see such rude and ignorant employees working at a café right in front of the cathedral. I know one review won’t change them — people like that will probably live at that low level forever.
Emma Y — Google review
The man who i think owns this place is genuinely the rudest man i’ve met, every Vietnamese person i’ve met who runs a cafe is very hospitable and nice, i tried to talk to him said xin chào, he turned his head and shook his head, kept giving me horrible looks, refused to even say hello to us, he was snatching drinks out of our hands, When we asked why he just yelled at us in Vietnamese, i heard people got food poisoning here, he pushed us out of the cafe for no reason at all, don’t support this man’s business he doesn’t deserve the money and he’s giving people food poisoning, he clearly has no care for his customers and is a nasty man, worst experience i’ve had at a Vietnamese cafe. so disappointed in the customer service , never had anyone be so nasty with no explanation.
Ineka S — Google review
Tourist Trap, don’t go there! The menu does not show prices for a reason. If you look non asian you pay more than double the price. The table next to us was charged half the price we payed for the same drinks.

Notable street
P. Hàng Gai, also known as the Silk Road, is a bustling and vibrant street in Hanoi. This 300-meter thoroughfare is renowned for its diverse specialty shops, art galleries, and boutique hotels. It's the go-to place in Hanoi for high-quality silk items including dresses, apparel, home furnishings, and traditional Vietnamese costumes. The street is lined with boutiques, tailors, fashion stores offering ready-to-wear fashion like Khai Silk and Tan Design.
Actually, I wanted to review P. Hang Quat Street, but it doesn't seem to appear on the maps. However, it's located right next to this street and offers everything traditional. I even spotted a few antique dresses, though I wasn't sure if they were meant for everyone or just for monks. This street had some truly rare and fascinating items.😍 For eg, I’ve seen many hand fans across Vietnam, from Ho Chi Minh City to Hoi An, but I’ve never come across ones like these. They were much larger than the regular hand fans we usually see.🪭

Hang Gai Street, also known as “Silk Street,” is an absolute gem in the heart of Hanoi’s Old Quarter. Whether you’re a tourist seeking authentic Vietnamese souvenirs or someone who enjoys cultural strolls, this street offers a perfect blend of tradition, elegance, and local charm. Stretching just a few hundred meters, Hang Gai is famous for its silk boutiques, tailor shops, and art galleries. The quality of silk here is outstanding — from scarves and áo dài (traditional Vietnamese dress) to custom-made suits and gowns, all crafted with precision and care. Many shops offer same-day tailoring, and the hospitality of the shopkeepers makes the experience even more enjoyable. Prices are reasonable, especially for the craftsmanship you receive. Beyond shopping, Hang Gai is aesthetically beautiful. The architecture is a mix of colonial-era facades and classic Vietnamese shop-houses. It’s busy, yet not overwhelmingly chaotic like some other streets in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. Street vendors selling coffee, postcards, and hand-painted art give it a local, lived-in feel. A must-visit stop is Tan My Design — a multi-level boutique showcasing exquisite textiles, home décor, and fashion. Art lovers will also appreciate the small but impactful galleries that dot the street, featuring works by contemporary Vietnamese artists. The street is also close to Hoan Kiem Lake, making it a perfect detour on your walking tour of Hanoi. It’s best enjoyed in the late afternoon or early evening when the lighting brings out the street’s true charm. Hang Gai is more than just a shopping destination — it’s a cultural experience. You feel the soul of Hanoi here — artistic, graceful, and deeply rooted in heritage. Whether you’re looking to shop or simply soak in the atmosphere, Hang Gai deserves a place on every Hanoi itinerary.
