Plaza Porticada, also known as Plaza Velarde, is a lively neoclassical square located in the heart of Santander. It offers stunning views of the portico-lined plaza and the city's expansive bay. Many major attractions such as the Gothic cathedral, Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology, Centro Botin, Paseo de Pereda promenade, and Banco Santander building are just a few minutes' walk away.
One of the sightseeing stops in Santander, it is a lovely place, but more importantly, the surrounding streets have nice restaurants and bars

Quaint little square. A few restaurants that offer menu del dia if you're hungry. Just off the port of Santander. Worth a visit .

Beautiful place! I was in Santander this weekend and on both days someone was playing live classical music, which just added to the impression. It was so nice just to sit there and admire the architecture ☺️

Centro Botín is a cutting-edge venue in Santander, designed by Renzo Piano and opened in June 2017. It features rotating art exhibitions and cultural activities, with 2500 sq meters of gallery space on two floors. The modernist building also offers futuristic upper-level viewing platforms that extend over the Bahia de Santander. The ground-floor cafe has become a social hub, and the surrounding plaza is popular for various activities.
I love this place! It has been always so charming to me. When I come alone, the "less is more " architecture and its surrounding just simply give me quiet and calm feelings. When Mei comes with me, she enjoys the playground, and, the merry-go-round 😄 besides, the elevator is great fun for children! Yes, of course, don't miss the elevator!!! Another thing is, the center is free for children , so bring them to watch a exposition is a very nice thing to do as well. And I appreciate that, during whole year, they organize many different culture activities , when we don't know what to do with our kid in weekend or holiday, go there, always a good choice
M.Y.Voyage — Google review
Excellent art gallery with so much to offer. The building itself is so nice! There are 2 floors full of so many artists with so many different perspectives. There are also objects in some of the exhibitions. I definitely recommend a visit.

This is just a review of the cafe on the ground level. The coffee and croissants were excellent. We arrived just before opening at 10am and had a seat outside in the shade with a wonderful view of the harbor. The service is as bit slow, but if you are not in a hurry then it is not a problem.
Simon R — Google review
Nice to hang out at the café or check out rooftop of the museum. Large space inside with gorgeous views of the water but sadly not much to see inside. I think they need to have more works to display. Entry for 18 and under is free.

Bought the ticket when I arrived. There was no queue. The galleries in the art center were very interesting. If you have spare time, you should give it a try

Iconic building but art collection is relatively poor. Bit sad that building design didn’t contemplate Santander’s weather and all the exterior walls need to be covered by a net to avoid falling pieces hit people.

Palacio de la Magdalena is a historic royal summer residence built in the early 20th century on the Peninsula of La Magdalena, Santander. It was constructed to serve as the official summer residence for the Spanish Royal Family and was designed by architects Javier Gonzalez de Riancho and Gonzalo Bringas. The palace, which cost 700,000 pesetas of 1912, now houses Menendez Pelayo International University and serves as a meeting and conference center.
I would definitely recommend visiting Palacio de la Magdalena. There are 2 options to get here. You can get the train which is part of the Hop on Hop off bus tour. It is included when you buy the ticket for €26pp. or if you were feeling active you could walk it in about 30-40 mins. Beautiful views of the coast once you get the top and of course the huge Palace which was constructed between 1909-1911.
Josh M — Google review
A true gem in Santander! The palace is an architectural marvel with a fascinating history—it served as the summer residence of King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenie. The grounds are stunning, perfect for a peaceful walk, picnic, or just enjoying the views. There’s also a small zoo and playground, great for kids. We walked there (about 35 minutes from the city center), but there’s also a tourist train available. Access to the gardens is free, and guided tours of the palace interior are available and absolutely worth it. Facilities are clean, and there’s a nice café on-site. A must-visit for anyone coming to Santander—beautiful, historic, and family-friendly!”
Unique P — Google review
If you are in Santander, you must visit this place. Besides the beautiful park and the emblematic buildings, the view is absolutely breathtaking. As a recommendation, if you enjoy walking, don’t take the little train to reach the palace. The distances presented by the staff who guide you are exaggerated — the walking times are much shorter.
Alin P — Google review
I enjoyed going to see it but I didn't want to visit inside the palace. I found the outside space very pleasant to walk around and the exterior of the palace is really very beautiful and for those who saw the series Grand Hotel it is really cool to go there.
Luciana C — Google review
Situated on the western peninsula of the bay, this former palace is the centre piece of a beautiful park with an excellent circular walk, lovely beach, great viewing points towards the bay and out to sea.
Mark H — Google review
Super pretty park with picknick area, toilet and view point, you can also find seals 🦭on the left side of the park, they got fresh sea water and seems happy but one of areas looked too small for 3 of them.
Ksenia T — Google review
Really nice walk. It's on a small peninsula from which you have some fantastic views. Beautiful trees and a nice park as well to relax or have a stroll, away from the crowded innercity. There is also a small zoo in the area where we saw some seals.

The Catedral de Santander is a stunning Gothic cathedral located in the heart of Santander, Spain. It consists of two churches with ancient statuary and Gothic design elements. The city's historic quarter also offers beautiful churches and vibrant plazas, while nature lovers can explore the breathtaking landscapes of Cantabria and the nearby Picos de Europa National Park for outdoor activities.
Santander Cathedral is a simply designed but striking building with a fantastic interior. It dates back to around 711 AD and the Moorish influence is very apparent. We spent a pleasant half an hour wandering around.
S Y — Google review
Lovely cathedral, unfortunately it was closed and we didn’t have time to go inside but I’m sure it was as beautiful as it is on the outside!
Josh M — Google review
We didn’t go in, because it was about to close (it was thursday, around 1pm), but the entry was only 2€ and it looked like there was a pretty inside. I recommended going around the cathedral, there’s many nice photo spots. 📸🌱
Undīne B — Google review
Very cool. And the Roman ruins were interesting. The cathedral was closed for a funeral, but we got breakfast near by and went back later.
Todd — Google review
The cathedral de Santander is located in the city center and it is a big church that has a small entrance fee but I would say is worth it as it is beautiful, not the church that much but the outside area, like a small garden in the middle. The visit doesn’t take long and I recommend it!
Maria A — Google review
Surprisingly pleasant place to visit, and at €2 this is well worth a visit to get out of the heat (or in our case, the rain). The light and bright interior was a surprise given the fairly plain outside. Having been rebuilt in the 50s (an era not known for great architecture) this is appealingly understated. The cloisters are a nice place to sit and recover.
Jeremy H — Google review
Nice place. 2€ entrance is ok. On the other side is also a small chapel with no cost. Fantastic colourful windows in the back.

It took 3 attempts to enter. 1st a Mass was due to take place. 2nd Siesta time closes everything. We finally gained access the following day. The crypt was lovely too.

Ermita de la Virgen del Mar is a hermitage that honors the patron saint of Santander, la Virgen del Mar. While its origins date back to 1400, it has undergone multiple renovations due to exposure to the elements. Legend has it that the hermitage's location was mysteriously changed overnight during its construction. Situated on an islet in San Roman, this sanctuary can be reached via a bridge and offers a stunning viewpoint of the sea.
Nice place to see, although it can get a bit overcrowded. If you are in the area ...do not miss it.different kind of a beach

Very disappointed. Been coming a few years now as we use the ferry. Very dated, way over priced and tiny plots. Caravans really dont fit. Seemed to be a festival going on, staff lied, said it was one night and only till 12pm. It was an all-nighter. Noise was unbelievable. Spoke to staff next day who said it was on for another night. We along with most others left. Site was empty. They still charged highest rates we have ever paid. Wont be going back. Neach beautiful. Beach bar nice. Campsite... sadly, will give it a miss.

(Translated by Google) Magnificent, a church like you don't always see. The paintings and colors are of great beauty. The colors chosen by the painter are exquisite. A feast for the eyes. Don't miss a visit to this church, don't miss it. The pillars representing the 12 apostles are so beautiful with high quality architectural and painting work. Not too much flourish or gilding like in other churches but a lot of beauty. What touched me was that some of the walls and some of the paint were starting to peel off, that’s sad. We can each contribute at our convenience to the preservation of this type of heritage. THANKS. The Iglesia de San Francisco is a simplistic, balanced, and spacious building with meticulous interiors. The remarkable design of the staircase leading to the Crypt showcases the church's architectural prowess. Located in Plaza de la Esperanza, it emanates an Italian-inspired ambiance. The parish priest embodies endearment and simplicity as he candidly imparts timeless wisdom. This beautiful church also serves as a venue for various steps of Danta Week, adding to its significance.
Extraordinarily peaceful in this church

(Translated by Google) I went to the Church for a funeral, it was not a good situation but it was very pleasant. The Panis Angelicus was performed by a tenor and with organ music. The priest already seemed tired and was a little stuck, but in his favor I will say that he gave a homily of a correct length, not at all heavy, which is not relevant in these cases. The building has a beautiful staircase at its main door and preserves the bell tower. In the side naves you can enjoy altarpieces from different periods. In addition to their work to preserve the historical cultural heritage of the Holy Week processions, the social work they carry out is worth highlighting.

(Translated by Google) The Church of San Francisco is a Roman Catholic, Apostolic, and eclectic (primarily Neo-Herrerian) temple located in the Cantabrian city of Santander; it stands at number 9 Calle de los Escalantes. It is the work of the Santander architect Javier González Riancho, one of Cantabria's most prestigious architects. He designed it in the mid-20th century after winning the 1940 design competition. It was inaugurated in 1953. It belongs to the Bishopric of Santander and is included in the lists of Cantabria's artistic and religious heritage. The church stands in the historic center of the city, next to the Esperanza market and very close to the town hall, on a site occupied since the 13th century by a Franciscan convent of great historical importance, which came to rival the Abbey of the Holy Bodies in the 15th century, demolished in 1896 to build the aforementioned market and town hall buildings. The remaining part of the complex was a church built in the 17th century, the former parish church of San Francisco de Asís, demolished in 1936 to complete the town hall building (until then only the western half had been built) and build the new church on its current site.

It was built in 1868 by A. Zabaleta, with a rectangular floor plan, a single nave and side chapels, in the Italian Renaissance style. What is most striking is the entrance staircase and the portico with Ionic columns. It has a tower adorned with several clocks. Inside, there is a Gothic carving of the Virgin with Child, the Virgin of Victories & a painting of Saint Lucia... I recommend that you stop to see this beautiful & large parish church ⛪️ (Original) Esta iglesia se encuentra en pleno centro de la ciudad junto a la Plaza del Cañadío & muy cerca del Paseo Pereda se encuentra exactamente detrás de la Plaza de Pombo, está abierta en horario de culto ... merece la pena ya que es datada en 1987 a nivel cultural. The Parroquia Santísimo Cristo, also known as Iglesia Baja or Iglesia Vieja, is a small church-crypt located beneath the Gothic Cathedral of Santander. Built in the 12th century, it features three naves with numerous columns and low ribbed vaults. The interior offers glimpses of ancient city remains through windows in the first nave. The structure's architecture includes cruciform pillars with attached columns and pointed vaults.

(Translated by Google) The church of Santísimo Cristo stands on the old Somorrostro hill, a promontory that was a strategic enclave for several centuries. In this same place a camp must have been built that would serve to supply supplies to the nearby city of Portus Victoriae, which would be located near the Magdalena peninsula. In the 12th century, King Alfonso VIII gave the town of Santander the status of municipal jurisdiction in the year 1187. This meant an important economic and social development for the city, causing the small monastic church to become a collegiate church. At the beginning of the 13th century, work began on a new church and the castle, the latter being demolished at the end of the 19th century. In the mid-18th century the collegiate church became a cathedral under the mandate of Pope Benedict XIV. Externally, the cathedral has a robust and resistant appearance more typical of a fortress than a church, with a tall and solid bell tower. The current cathedral, the upper church, began construction during the 16th century. It is built on the church of Christ, with the floors of the two buildings exactly coinciding in order to increase its stability. At the bottom is the Church of Christ, the oldest, built in the 12th century on an old monastery. It is accessed through a door located under a portico with a gallery of pointed arches. It is Romanesque in style with three naves topped by apses, the latter built in later centuries and already in Gothic style. The church is characterized by its wide and robust pillars that support the upper church, as well as by the low height of its vaulted ceilings with ribbed arches. In one of the side naves of this church, archaeological remains from the Roman period can be seen through a glass pavement, probably from thermal baths. In this church are the tombs of Saint Emeterio and Saint Celedonio, who were tortured and killed at the end of the 3rd century during the rule of Emperor Diocletian. The two saints are the patrons of the city of Santander. Inside, it is worth highlighting the carving of the crucified Christ in polychrome wood located on the main altar and the stone piety that is a replica of a carving by the sculptor Gregorio Fernández and found in the national museum of Valladolid. A beautiful church, sober and simple, that impresses with its mysticism and invites reflection and introspection. Highly recommended visit.
