Aosta Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, is a renowned 11th-century religious building located in the ancient Roman area of Augusta Praetoria. It features impressive frescoes, a crypt, and a neoclassical facade from the 1800s.
11th century cathedral built over 4th century Roman era ruins. The cathedral is enormous and despite being austere and sombre in style does have a side chapel with beautiful stained glass, large paintings of the Stations of the Cross, and beautiful murals (frescoes). Also worth noting the marble altar and wooden choir. On one side a work of art in metalwork - the reliquary containing remains of San Grato. A variety of architectural styles. There is also a museum and crypt which we did not visit and two bell towers undergoing maintenance at the moment. Entry is free and well worth a visit.

The Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral is in the very center of cute Aosta. It's very large and took almost 4 centuries to be built, from 11 cent onwards. However, the interiors were pretty underwhelming and disappointing - something you don't expect in Italian Churches. Free to enter
Dejan B — Google review
Actually, we wanted to go see Criptoportico forense, but we entered the cathedral instead, and so we discovered a series of hidden treasures: the little museum at the back (with beautiful carved wooden panels), the early Christian church located beneath the floor, the Ottonian frescoes from the 11th century that are now above the ceiling, and a cloister with unusual round/hexagonal columns. All of this was accompanied by the narration of the very kind, knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide of the Cathedral museum (Matteo Del Col). Highly recommended, especially the frescoes! It seems that few people are aware of their existence. It's just a few euros for a 1h+ excursion.

Beautiful Church, Mixed with old and new art and architecture style!!! It is open during week days after 3 p.m. and it offers a great spiritual silence for your prayers and a great atmosphere!!! Really enthusiastic about this church.

I have a chance to have a mass (Eucharist) here. Thanks GOD. They are renovating some back building. The building itself quite maintained. They have a museum inside the church but it’s closed in the morning. There are few parking lots not so far from the church. Nice to walk around the church.

It is a very pretty church. It does close daily for lunch. Worth a visit. Free entry.

Cathedral with very beautiful facade. Decorated with terracotta figures relating to the life of Jesus and Mary. The interior is also beautiful, many chapels. It was rebuilt on the foundations of the Rome forum.

Hovl — Google review
(Translated by Google) The Church of San Giovanni Battista, located in the heart of Gressoney-Saint-Jean, is one of the most important religious buildings in the Aosta Valley, as well as a spiritual and historical symbol of the local community. The church dates back to the 15th century, when it was built as a place of worship for the faithful of the valley. However, the current structure is the result of various expansion and restoration interventions that took place in the following centuries. The current appearance is due to a significant renovation which took place in the 19th century, which gave the church a neo-Gothic style, much appreciated at the time. The church is closely linked to the Walser culture, the people of Germanic origin who inhabited the valley. This bond is visible both in the architecture and in the religious traditions preserved over time. The choice to dedicate the church to Saint John the Baptist reflects the strong Christian tradition of the valley. The saint is considered the patron saint of the town and is celebrated with events and processions during his feast. The church, in addition to its religious function, is a meeting place for the faithful and visitors, hosting concerts and cultural events.

Car parked in the village, there is parking as you enter and pass the church on the left. It takes 20 minutes. Another route starts from the cemetery. There is a small parking lot. On the site there is a chapel, the keep, the ruined surrounding walls and the cistern for collecting water. The construction dates back to 1270 documented by archives of the time. Free Entrance. Built around 1200 for defensive purposes, in a strategic position, it has always been owned by the Savoy family. There is a watchtower, an ancient chapel, and a defensive wall that protected the now-destroyed residence. Stunning views! (Translated by Google) A very nice place with a beautiful viewpoint! The climb is very gentle and easy to do. If you're not used to the steepness, I recommend taking breaks along the way; it's not challenging, but it's definitely worth it. There's also a bench at the top where you can rest! You can climb from behind the village church, or from the main road, which begins an easy climb to a church, and then there's a fork to reach the summit. (Translated by Google) A very nice secluded place and a lovely old chapel in the Winkelmatten quarter on the outskirts of Zermatt. It takes no more than ten minutes to get here from the station by bus (red line, Winkelmatten). The chapel was built in 1607 and is a miniature copy of the old village church. Consecrated in the name of the Holy Family. The Baroque altarpiece was carved from pine in 1730 and depicts Joseph, Mary and the Child Jesus. The top of the richly gilded altar consists of clouds, rays of light and decorations. An ancient custom has made this chapel a popular place of pilgrimage for young couples. In the old days, each of the young men of Zermatt was looking for a young woman for the carnival with whom they could dance and celebrate the “old carnival”. If they went together to Winkelmatten on the feast day of St. Joseph, then after the carnival their mutual obligations ended. But those who walked together again to Winkelmatten on Easter Sunday were considered brides and grooms. And now many couples choose this chapel for their wedding. It also hosts baptisms. Next to the chapel there is a green lawn with benches and a fountain. You can sit, have a snack, meditate. And if you walk a hundred meters along the street, you can take beautiful photos of the majestic Matterhorn. I relaxed in May 2022.

(Translated by Google) Much better outside than inside.... The architectural complex of St. Gilles is a large and valuable example of Aosta Valley Gothic. It's a shame, however, that the most beautiful thing left is only the massive façade with a square bell tower which makes it look a lot like a medieval fortress. Noteworthy are the three-light windows, the portals and the Gothic gargoyles. The interior, however, is much more anonymous, having been rebuilt in baroque style without any flourishes and without valuable works. Around it stands the convent complex, now empty, which hosted Napoleon in 1800 during the siege of Bard. We were able to quickly visit the interior one Sunday morning after mass. Chiesa Paleocristiana di San Lorenzo is an exceptional archaeological site in Aosta, offering a glimpse into early Christian history. The necropolis here provides insight into burial practices spanning over a thousand years. The well-labeled exhibitions and architectural finds make for an informative visit that typically lasts about 20 minutes. Visitors can purchase an integrated ticket for multiple sites around Aosta, making it a worthwhile experience.
A very special place, because of it's age. This ancient church was developed from 500 or so. Amazing that so many tombes were found intact. They say because of flooding by the river that deposited a layer of silt on the remains after a fire. Even more amazing: the Italians excavated the lot while another church is standing on top of it. Very impressive.
OPA B — Google review
This is one of the few sights that reaches back to the pre-christianic era and show the layers built on top of it. The architecture and the history of the place earn a definite 5 points. But... dear tourist board, here are a few suggestions: the tickets to the place have to be bought at another location and the film shown follows its own language sequence, indiscriminately of who is watching. In our case we would have had to wait about 20 minutes, before the english version would start again. Please fix for future visitors.
Ralf W — Google review
As part as a 3-location ticket good for a quick visit
Annemarie D — Google review
This place is very interesting. Huge amount of history covering 2000 years. Originally used to bury bishops, a video (in both Italian and English) is on show detailing the development of the site. If the video is playing in Italian go for a look around and come back to hear the English version, it's worth it.
Kathryn B — Google review
An interesting necropolis that apparently had hundreds of bodies buried (practically layered on top of one another) here - providing archeologists with more than a thousand years of uninterrupted history on burial practices. The exhibitions are well labelled, and informative but overall the site is pretty small. It takes about 15 minutes to see it all, give or take. They sell a ticket for 4 or 5 of the main sites around Aosta that includes entry to this location.

The Catholic Church of Santo Stefano, situated between Jean-Laurent Martinet street and via abbe Joseph-Marie Treves, underwent restoration in the 18th century based on another church. The interior houses a wooden sculpture depicting St. Christopher. In the evening, visitors can appreciate the beauty of the facade and the small square surrounding it. Interestingly, there are unique attractions in the vicinity that may not be mentioned in tourist guides. This church holds its charm for individuals who appreciate such places.
I personally like this place also.

(Translated by Google) The church of Santo Stefano (Saint-Étienne]) is a Catholic place of worship in the city of Aosta, located at the intersection of via Jean-Laurent Martinet and via abbé Joseph-Marie Trèves. Rebuilt in the 18th century on the structures of a previous 15th century church, it presents numerous elements of artistic interest, in particular the frescoes on the facade. The large baroque main altar, for the gigantic wooden statue of San Cristoforo and for the precious pipe organ. A sacred building built on the area which, in the Roman period was occupied by a necropolis, outside the city of Augusta Praetoria, dates back to the 13th century. The church, as we see it today, was built in 1728-29 on the wall structures of a previous 15th century church from that period. There is an inscription on the architrave of the right entrance door: "Hoc opus decisit fieri Jaquemin Pastor." At the height of these dates, the bell tower was also raised and the creation of the frescoes on the facade began. The main portal made of stone. In the first band of frescoes, from left to right, San Giacomo Maggiore, San Grato, Sant'Antonio abate with a believer at his feet are depicted, in the centre, the scene of the martyrdom of Santo Stefano, then the figures of Sant'Agata , San Giocondo and San Leonardo. Above, in two oval boxes placed on the sides of the windows, we find the images of Saint Joseph and Saint John the Evangelist; above the windows, we find the Madonna del Rosario between San Domenico and Santa Caterina da Siena. The church has three naves, at the end of the central nave the baroque main altar stands out for its size, in gilded wood, consecrated in 1670. The imposing altar machine is structured in two orders of superimposed spiral columns which enclose a multiplicity of canvases and golden statues, two reliquaries are placed on the sides of the tabernacle. In the center of the upper band the SS is depicted. Trinity; in the center of the one below there is a canvas with the martyrdom of Saint Stephen. Behind the altar is a valuable 18th century wooden walnut choir, carved with friezes, garlands and angels' heads from the church of the ancient convent of San Francesco, which was destroyed in 1836. The work that most attracts the curiosity of those who visit the church, in the left nave, is a gigantic polychrome wooden statue of San Cristoforo, carved from a single log and approximately 4.60 meters high. This is a work dating back to the sixth decade of the 15th century, attributed to the workshop of Jean de Chetro, a carver from Valle d'Aosta active in the creation of the cathedral's choir. On the choir loft on the counter-façade, there is the pipe organ, built by the organ builder Costantino Mazzia in 1877.
