Basilica Santa Maria della Salute, also known as the Salute, is a stunning baroque church in Venice. Its iconic domed design and monumental facade by architect Baldassare Longhena make it a favorite among Venetians. Built in 1681 to commemorate the city's survival from a plague outbreak, the church houses important artworks by renowned artists such as Titian and Tintoretto.
A nice place to visit at the Southern part of Venice. A really pretty view too. Personally I’ve sat in front of the whole basilica just to watch the view for more than 30 minutes. Would highly recommend taking a look!
Ozan Ç — Google review
Fabulous and iconic Venetian church, designed by Baldassare Longhena (1598-1682), it looks great inside and out. Its characteristic dome can be seen from many angles across Venice. With the outside newly renovated, it looks better than ever.
Nils P — Google review
The basilica itself is free, so definitely worth a visit. To get a view from the top, you have to go there to scan the qr code to book a slot. There's quite a few stairs up, and it's tight and windy but the view is lovely. However, it is very tight at the top and I think they let slightly too many people go up there. I think half the group size would be much better. Bare in mind too that once you're up there, you can't leave till the tour guide says you can. It's about half an hour up there.
Ben — Google review
This is of course one of the primary sites of interest in Venice and filled with great works by the master Titian. The main altar too is spectacular. The marble flooring directly under the famous dome is not currently accessible and there is some repair work going on. The church is free to enter.
Michael O — Google review
A rather impressive sight from the outside (immersive and very detail, white marble with plenty of details carved), very nicely located for "viewing" all the way from St. Marco. Amazing sight indeed. Rather simplistic in the inside but still a marvel of architecture!
Stelios A — Google review
One of the most photographed objects in Venice but with a rather uninteresting interior. The best light is just before sunrise coming into Canal Grande from the lagoon with the vaporetto.
Sebastian R — Google review
Lovely place, in a fab location. I did the dome tour too, which was good. Make sure you're on time though, cos Mr Man doesn't wait for sluggards! It's a load of steps up, and there are a couple of half interesting spots on the way up, but it's not like going up St Paul's. It's all about the view from the top, which is pretty good, and not too high, but its not a patch on the view from the Campanile (or St Georgio), mainly because you can only look out to the north over the Grand Canal. It's a bit cramped too.
Charles W — Google review
Beautiful domed basilica on the water. The outside is best views in early morning or late evening from the bridge or across the grand canal.

Basilica S.Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, also known as The Frari, is an impressive Gothic-style church in Venice. Despite its simple exterior, the interior is a treasure trove of art and history. Visitors can admire works by Titian, including the Assumption of the Virgin and marquetry choir stalls crafted by Marco Cozzi. The church also houses Canova's pyramid mausoleum and Bellini's Madonna with Child triptych.
“Absolutely stunning—an art lover’s dream with soul ✨” I was blown away by the grandeur and atmosphere here. The exterior may look humble, but once inside, the soaring Venetian‑Gothic arches, massive stone columns, and serene ambiance make it feel like a hidden cathedral gallery .
Akınalp F — Google review
Absolutely beautiful Basilica in Venice that is worth visiting. It is a wonder of architecture and houses some amazing artwork including Titian's impressive Assumption which is above the altar. If you are visiting Venice, this Basilica is well wort the visit.
Keith — Google review
It's nice to see the skill of humankind in the building of the Basilica, the many sculptures and paintings and the love of preserving and restoration. We are not religious, so to us, this is a place to appreciate the skill of the artisans. The entrance fee is fine and we were treated kindly by the staff. It would be nice to have an audio tour to learn more about the various works of art and the history and meaning behind them.
Lisa W — Google review
Loved this beautiful church. Very unique. We wandered the streets trying to find it and of course walked past it but came back as we saw the tower. The art is incredible. The tombs were informative. The fact that this is a Franciscan church (the Venetian term for Friars in Frari - sounds a bit like Ferrari) gives it the plain facade and you can see the tension of trying to keep things simple and the larger church’s imposition of grandiose art. A couple of unique items with the clocks.
Randy H — Google review
The church might not look like much from the outside but it is really unique and impressive from the inside. It's worth the 5 euro entrance fee. The staff is very friendly. There are audio guides available. There is plenty of artwork to contemplate in many unique styles.
Julián — Google review
One of the great churches of Venice. Burial place of Titian and Canova, housing great monuments to them and some of the doges. Filled to the brim with monuments that would comprise a whole museum. Especially interesting is a statue by Donatello.
Michael O — Google review
A stunning and peaceful church in the heart of Venice. The interior is breathtaking, especially Titian’s Assumption of the Virgin. A must-see for anyone who loves art, history, and quiet beauty.

The Glass Museum in Murano offers a fascinating journey through the history and artistry of Venetian glassmaking, spanning from the 15th century to contemporary times. The museum provides insight into the evolution of this craft, showcasing exquisite pieces and exploring the techniques employed over the centuries. Visitors can immerse themselves in the rich heritage of glass production while gaining an appreciation for its cultural significance.
Our visit to the Murano Glass Museum was a delightful experience. We purchased a family ticket for two adults and two children at €28, which we found to be reasonably priced. There was no queue at the entrance, allowing us to begin our exploration promptly. The entire tour took approximately 40 minutes, a suitable duration for families with young children. The museum's collection was impressive, showcasing glass art from the ~1850s to contemporary pieces. The exhibits were well-curated, offering a chronological journey through the evolution of glassmaking. Particularly noteworthy was the display of uranium glassware, which glowed under ultraviolet light, providing an educational and visually captivating experience. The museum is housed in a baroque-style building, adding to the aesthetic appeal of the visit. Accessibility is well-considered, with wheelchair access available throughout the facility. Photography is generally permitted, though flash photography is restricted to protect the artworks. I would have liked the museum to show more on the glass making is done, there was only a short video a one.point. it would have been great to see a live demonstration of even been able to some supervised work. Overall, the Murano Glass Museum offers an enriching experience for visitors of all ages. Its combination of historical and modern glass art, coupled with thoughtful amenities, makes it a worthwhile destination for those interested in the art and history of glassmaking. ---
Aaron S — Google review
I have a nice time and experience visiting the Museum. There's a 10 euro entrance fee but worth it. The best way to explore the artifacts they are showing is to know the history of it, they have a self guided tour that you can download. Before you start connect to their wifi then download the App Muve, they have a guide for this, then search the Glass Museum. Actually you can also use this app in any other places you will go to in Venice.
Hetti F — Google review
One of the small civic museums with a collection of the famous Murano glass. Of particular interest is the dinner table set, shaped like a garden which is spectacular. The main display room is also very large and beautifully painted with a fresco. There are also some archaeological finds here as well.
Michael O — Google review
Unique designs, unlike anything I've seen. The garden at the end is a must-see (though not made of glass). Intricate craftsmanship. The washroom was out of service during my visit. No live glass-blowing demonstrations, unfortunately. Two vending machines offer coffee and snacks. Bags aren't allowed, but free lockers are provided.
K. F — Google review
AMAZING glass blowing artistry! A demonstration was scheduled by our tour Guide. Huge selection of VERY expensive glass pieces, the most expensive that I saw was labelled as 20,990 Euros. They offer a large discount on and free shipping of these pieces. Lower level has beautiful items at prices that are everyday, as low as 10 Euro for a small charm. Well worth the price for the amazing skill it took to produce.
Paul Y — Google review
So fantastic! Was on my bucket list and did not disappoint! We got a tour from the best guide! He was funny and very knowledgeable! Got to see the glass blowers at work, so cool, could have sat there all day.
Kristin S — Google review
A bit of fun while on the island. Murano glass is world renowned and historical so it that sense it is a must see. I wish there had been more descriptions of the glass and its history, the current offering was a bit lacking.
George K — Google review
Love love loved coming here! We did the free audio tour as well and it gave us such an appreciation for the art and history around glass making. Especially cool as Murano is the centre of so much innovation Some really beautiful pieces and would definitely recommend as it was not very busy and super peaceful

Basilica dei Santi Maria e Donato is a historic church in the Venetian lagoon, dating back to the 7th century and featuring significant renovations over time. It is renowned for housing the relics of Saint Donatus of Arezzo and large bones believed to be from a dragon slain by the saint.
I really really wish we had time to go in to see the dragon bones. But the outside alone is so magnificent already. I loved walking by it everyday we were in Murano. As beautiful at night as in the day.
UnDiplomatic W — Google review
This beautiful church really only drew me in for the dragon bone myth. It has a lovely courtyard and nice mosaics. There are information posters describing the art and building. The dragon bones are behind the front alter. It cost 3.50 euro, cash only.
Vanessa B — Google review
Murano itself is a bit overpriced and underwhelming, but this church visit was by far the most unpleasant experience I had there. The elderly lady at the entrance was on the phone when I arrived — no problem, I patiently waited and even greeted her kindly. My mom and I were quietly looking around, trying to see the stained glass artwork, but since the church was very dark, I couldn’t find it. When I asked her where it was, she rudely told me to “read the sign.” Then she abruptly said, “Pay now.” I simply replied, “Never mind,” and left with my mom. This is not someone qualified to work at a touristic site. As for the church itself, it’s nothing remarkable. Don’t waste your time.
Rocío S — Google review
This lovely old church has beautiful mosaic floors. Behind the altar, there are bones displayed which are said to be those of a dragon killed by Saint Donatus. Much of Murano is devoted to glass blowing, tourist shops, and restaurants. This church makes a nice respite from that.
Beverly Z — Google review
Beautiful church with noted Byzantine mosaics. €3.50 entry fee for adults in 2025.
A T — Google review
A big imposing basilica in the middle of Murano. You have to pay €3.50 to enter and they only take cash. We went mostly because of the legend of the slayed dragon and its bone relics. They're behind the main altar, hanging against the back wall. A very nice mosaic covers the half dome at the back.
Arash S — Google review
Very lovely and church activities were still ongoing. Understand it's the largest church in the world
Maureen C — Google review
Great Duomo with tower in Murano. Away from hustle bustle of Venice. Entry was €3-4. The outside is much more beautiful than inside, although the glass windows might look beautiful on a sunny day with sun rays coming through those windows.

Island
San Giorgio Maggiore is a charming island in the southeast of San Marco, offering breathtaking views and a historic church with a bell tower. The island has been an inspiration for Renaissance painters due to its majestic basilica visible from Piazzetta San Marco. Originally, there was only a small wooden church on the island until subsequent centuries saw the construction of the monastery and later, in the 16th century, the basilica as it stands today.
An island where I feel the move of the floating construction bed. The tower is great because of the great view of the other tower and gladly to see Lorenzo Quinn Building Bridges work.
Louanna N — Google review
* you can pay only in cash. * you can go up with elevator and face the best view of Venice. I was stocked there, didn’t want to move, till they ring the bells and all my dreams went to the hell * the building is normal in compare of other attractions in Venice but it’s view is incomparable to nearby thing, so don’t miss it. * the island have a little harbor with an amazing view of small boats and lots of garden you can see in my picture. * you can stay there for half a day but check the opening time
Hasti G — Google review
Visible directly across from Piazza San Marco, this beautiful island is known for its peaceful atmosphere, historic architecture, and stunning views. Note: Easily accessible via Vaporetto Line 2.
Seokjin H — Google review
Better view from the clocktower than even from the one in San Marco. And the church is actually free. Bar nearby was very reasonably priced too compared to San Marco. Worth a visit if you're in Vencie!
Delio Z — Google review
Very beautiful Churchill with free admission. I also reccomend going up to the bell tower for the best views of Venice and the surrounding islands.
Mateusz F — Google review
One of the most famous locations in Venice. Don’t buy anything in its around, everything is so expensive.
Farnaz K — Google review
Just a short vaporetto ride from the bustling city of Venice, this island is famous for its iconic church, the Basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, with its elegant facade, majestic dome, and classical proportions. One of the highlights of visiting San Giorgio Maggiore is ascending the bell tower, which offers panoramic views of Venice and the surrounding lagoon. From the top of the tower, you can see famous landmarks such as St. Mark's Square, the Doge's Palace, and the Campanile di San Marco, as well as the picturesque islands scattered throughout the lagoon. Aside from the basilica, it offers a tranquil retreat from the crowds of Venice. The island's peaceful atmosphere, lush gardens, and waterfront promenade make it the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a leisurely stroll or a relaxing picnic.

B Restaurant alla Vecchia Pescheria is a charming eatery located in a quiet square near glass-making factories. It offers homestyle Venetian cuisine with a focus on seafood, served in simple yet creative ways. The restaurant is known for its good aperitifs and coffee breaks, making it an ideal spot to rest and refuel while exploring the area. With both indoor and outdoor seating, it can get busy, so planning ahead is recommended.
Hidden down a little sidestreet this restaurant was lovely. It has a full menu of local dishes and more internationally know Italian cuisine. The staff are more than friendly and it's reasonably priced compared to the main Venice restaurants. We had a cosy lunch here before leaving Murano and we were really disappointed that we had only discovered this place on our final day in Venice. The spaghetti bolognese was delicious and there's a vegetarian version also. For dessert the pastry with custard and raspberry was divine. If your in Venice and are planning on a visit to Murano this is a good place to eat.

This restaurant is just off the main street in Murano. The outdoor seating is in a pleasant little courtyard and they also have indoor seating available if you want. There is a good selection of food options and the portions are quite large. Everyone should be able to find a dish they enjoy! Nestled in the charming backstreets of Murano, La Perla Ai Bisatei offers a delightful escape from the typical tourist traps that often dominate dining options. This casual osteria is a favorite among locals, including glassblowers who frequent it during their lunch breaks. The atmosphere is lively and authentic, with the sounds of friendly banter filling the air as staff announce daily specials.
Excellent Italian restaurant. We stumbled upon it by accident during the hot lunchtime. It was a real immersion into Italian cuisine, all the dishes were delicious, the portions were large, the dessert was simply magnificent. The service made a special impression, our waiter Simon was very friendly and despite the restaurant being fully booked, he managed to get everywhere. I would like to come back here again and will recommend it to my friends. Thank you❤️

Amazing restaurant in Murano. We got the spaghetti with clams and mussels, the caprese salad and fried calamari. And of course we had to try the tiramisu, which was so amazing we ordered a second one! The service is friendly and the prices are very reasonable. If I ever come back to Venice I will definitely make the trip to eat here again.

I came to this wonderful restaurant 20 years ago and it's still the best one. I know you have to walk around Murano to find it but believe me, will be the best experience ever. Special mention to the bacala mantecata a typical Venetian dish. It's prepared daily here with great taste, for me is the best. This is where locals come to eat, don't expect a typical turist restaurant. This is what we call cucina de la nonna (Grandsma cooking style). Don't miss spaghetti alle vongole and the tiramisu which is hand made. Every time I come to venice this is a must-visit. Away from the crowd and perfect for the real italian experience

Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo, also known as St. John and Paul Basilica, is a magnificent Gothic church in Venice's Castello district. This grand edifice is the final resting place of 25 Venetian doges and boasts an impressive collection of art, including Veronese's ceiling decorations. The interior is adorned with captivating paintings, statues, and other ornate decorations on each grave.
Really enjoyed visit to the Basilica. It is right next to the hospital which also has an amazing entrance BTW. It's just 3.5 euro each to get in and you are met with an amazing and large area. There several little chapels off the main area. There are many works of religious art on the walls. Looks like some rich people also managed to get some tombs or statues or whatever rich people like spending money on in churches to be try to be remembered (I ignored all the names so they also failed). There is a crucifix with a kneeler in the centre. A reminder of what happened to a man who tried to spread peace. Such a shame that 2000 years later terror still reigns and bullies are still in control . The vaulted ceilings are fantastic, but the piece de resistance is the wonderful stained glass window. A mirror is provided to get an even closer look. Words don't really do the place justice so I have posted several pictures. Truly worth visiting.
Chris W — Google review
Honestly, I found this basilica more beautiful than the San Marco. Very quiet, you're free to walk around and the entrance fee is only a few euros.

A wonderfully impressive cathedral filled with stunning carved monuments, as well as a beautiful stained glass windows. There are a number of very beautiful chapels and side rooms, with paintings by famous local artists.

Simply put, this is the largest church in Venice. Step inside, and the vastness and serenity feel almost otherworldly. Its immense scale means there’s no shortage of art to uncover at every turn, from intricate marble altars and vibrant frescoes to majestic cupolas, stained glass windows, patterned floors, and grand tombs.
CityScrolls — Google review
Wonderful interior. Sam sold us our tickets and then showed us the switches to light up the art. This place is a hidden gem, bathed in so much history. When we visited it was almost empty, so the atmosphere was so serene with just the sound of soft prayer music.

Beautiful church! There is a small fee to enter. The staff members Sam and Fra Giuseppe were super friendly and helpful! I bought a rosary and Fra was so kind to interrupt his work to bless it with a beautiful prayer. The architecture and art are beautifully displayed throughout on the various alters. We found relics on display including a foot of Saint Catherine of Siena. This was a pleasant surprise and another jewel in the Venice . I highly recommend a visit!

Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Pantalon is a modest 17th-century church in Venice, known for its remarkable artworks. The church's unfinished facade sets it apart, and inside, visitors can marvel at the largest oil-on-canvas painting in the world. Covering the entire ceiling, this enormous work depicts the martyrdom and glory of Saint Pantaleon.
This place feels more like a church than a museum—a truly peaceful and spiritual experience. It’s free to visit, and when we went, there weren’t many people, making it a quiet and great spot to rest after walking around Venice. We also had the chance to pray, which made the visit even more meaningful. The ceiling paintings are absolutely stunning, and we appreciated the priest’s tip to stand in the left corner near the entrance for the best view and photo. Our only regret is finding this place late—after just 15 minutes, the priest kindly asked us to leave as the church closes at 12 PM. So, be sure to plan ahead and include this gem in your schedule!

This church is a bit of a secret stunner. There is an incomplete exterior, however the interior contains a vast painting on the ceiling, with immense perspective. It is as if there is no roof to the church, and it continues on to the height of a skyscraper. Added to that are, as normal for Venice, a series of altarpieces and artworks by the great renaissance masters.
Michael O — Google review
The church is truly a breathtaking masterpiece, both inside and out. From the moment you arrive, its architecture captures your attention — a perfect blend of elegance, history, and spiritual beauty. The exterior features intricate stonework and tall, graceful spires that reach toward the sky, creating an inspiring sense of awe. As you step inside, the warm glow of sunlight streaming through the stained glass windows fills the space with color and life. Every detail, from the polished wood pews to the ornate altar, reflects remarkable craftsmanship and reverence. The atmosphere is serene and welcoming, inviting you to pause and reflect. Even if you are not particularly religious, it’s impossible not to feel a sense of peace and wonder here. The acoustics are wonderful as well — when the choir sings, their voices seem to float through the air like a divine echo. Whether you’re attending a service, exploring the architecture, or simply admiring the artistry, this church offers an unforgettable experience. It stands as a true landmark — a place where beauty, faith, and community come together in perfect harmony. Visiting this church isn’t just about seeing a building; it’s about feeling inspired by something greater. **(205 words)**

Unremarkable exterior but worth visiting for the painted ceiling alone. Seemingly the largest work on of art on a canvas, incredible illusionistic effect. Photos don’t do justice. There’s a Veronese in one of the chapels too.
A T — Google review
Very low-key from the outside, incredibly beautiful in the inside. Be respectful when visiting as it is a working church: dress appropriately and be quiet. For Catholics: the relics of Saint Pantaleon are preserved there.

It is worth a visit. See the amazing art and history from the old times. Do some readings about the building and you will be enjoying to see and know about the history of the building. Beautiful, quiet, a bit hot but i had my hand fan with me.

The Chiesa di San Pantalon may look modest from the outside, but inside it stuns with one of Venice’s most spectacular surprises: a massive ceiling painting by Fumiani, depicting the Martyrdom of St. Pantalon. Spanning the entire nave, it creates a breathtaking illusion of depth and movement. A hidden gem for lovers of Baroque drama and artistic ambition.
Giulia B — Google review
Don’t be fooled by the plain exterior — step inside (it’s free), take a seat (you’ll need it) and maybe give your neck a quick stretch in anticipation of what’s to come. Then look up. The entire ceiling is one overwhelming masterpiece: saints and angels in a swirling, dramatic ascent, seemingly bursting right through the roof into the heavens. It’s the largest painting on canvas in the world — stitched together from 40 panels — and took Gianantonio Fumiani 24 years to complete. Talk about devotion...

The Church of Madonna dell'Orto, originally known as St. Cristoforo Church, was renamed after a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary arrived at the church. This 14th-century church in Cannaregio is adorned with a stunning Gothic facade and cloisters. It houses numerous works by Tintoretto, who is also buried here. The artist's paintings are among the highlights of this hidden gem in Venice, making it a worthwhile visit for art enthusiasts.
The tomb of Tintoretto is inside. The Painter had no long way. House of birth is 120 steps away

The church is busy with visitors but it is still possible to appreciate the paintings. I liked the building. If you are a fan of Tintoretto then this is indeed a treasure trove for you. His art doesn't appeal to me personally. Be prepared for a cold reception from the person you must pay to enter. He seemed discommoded do you have to deal with paying visitors disturbing his cell phone activity. No greeting, no warmth. Sad....
M N — Google review
Beautiful if a bit quiet in the weekday. Wonderfully restored. Giant paintings by Tintoretto and a few others. The statue of Madonna of the vegetable garden is tucked away in a corner chapel, which is used for daily mass. Giant bell tower. Tucked into a quiet corner of Venice. You can take your time here. No one will hurry you. There is a public lodging house connected to this church. Look it up if you like austere living quarters with a number of rules. A few streets down, there are some eateries. A luxury hotel nearby. Nearest valpretto stop - Orto.
Hui K — Google review
3€ per entry and then the candles cost 50 cents each. Came for Tintoretto’s paintings, and it was a nice church. His house was nearby too. A good reason to walk around the Cannaregio neighbourhood - probably my favourite in Venice.

Great church with amazing artwork; could use some better lighting to allow for viewing
George S — Google review
One of the most significant spot if you are Tintoretto fan. "The presentation of the Virgin in the Temple" is very famous and important work. The high altar paintings by Tintoretto are marvellous, no doubt. Though not everything is easy to descry which is quite usual for church altars. Just to the right of the entrance there is very nice Conegliano. Personally I admire Palma il Giovane "Crucifixion" in Morosini chapel. The church itself has good spirit, though most of the time it operates as a museum (there is 3 euros entry fee). Exterior is also beautiful, the temple has very noticable bell tower built in interestong eastern fashion.
Sergei B — Google review
I had the opportunity to visit this church, and it was a pleasant discovery. Inside, you'll find the tomb of Tintoretto. The entrance fee of 3 euros is quite reasonable, and it allows you to view some of Tintoretto's paintings, although they have aged and darkened over time. It's a good place for a one-time visit, especially if you have an interest in Tintoretto's work. However, for those without a strong connection to the artist, it might not be a must-see attraction.
Georgy G — Google review
The Church of the Madonna dell'Orto is certainly one of the most important monuments of Venice, among the unmissable of the Cannaregio district. The exceptionally rich history and significant historical figures make this church special. A church and monastery were founded here around 1350 by the Umiliati order from Lombardy and initially dedicated to Saint Christopher, the patron saint of the gondoliers. Fra Tiberio of Parma, the leader of the Order, is said to have been responsible for the original design of the church and is buried here. The name of the church derives from an anecdote of the time. Venetian parish priest of Santa Maria Formosa was commissioned a statue of the Madonna from the Venetian sculptor Giovanni De Santi, the priest is rejected the work, then the artist temporarily placed the statue in his garden, where the sculpture began to emit strange glow especially during the night, the news spread and the garden became a pilgrimage destination for the citizens in veneration of the statue. The Scuola di San Cristoforo bought the statue, with the intention of thereby increasing offerings towards the cost of the building work, and on 18th June 1377 it was placed on the high altar. Since then the church has been known as Madonna dell'Orto. Of great interest is certainly the façade, which rises proudly and high above a large churchyard, a feature not at all obvious here in Venice. The gothic brick façade is one of Venice's most purely pleasing. The sloping galleries of apostles, carved by the Delle Masegne brothers, are unique in Venice. The central part of this imposing façade is dominated by the presence of a central rose window that allows light to penetrate inside the church, and from the entrance door, a sculptural work by Bartolomeo Bon, with the statues of Saint Christopher and the lateral statues of the Madonna and of the Archangel Gabriel, to be attributed to the chisels of Antonio Rizzo and Giovanni Fiorentino. The fame and beauty of the church are undoubtedly linked to the name of the famous painter Tintoretto who lived in the nearby Campo dei Mori. The Jacopo Robusti, in fact, left in the sanctuary ten splendid works and not only, in the left side of the apse rest, in fact, the "sacred remains" of the artist. The fascinating journey into the church of the Madonna dell'Orto, between Death and Beauty, ends with the splendid bell tower that with its 56 meters stands triumphant over the entire northern lagoon, inviting visitors to pay tribute to Tintoretto and the others protagonists of the magical Venetian sanctuary.

In the heart of Venice, you'll find the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta detta I Gesuiti, an opulent 18th-century Catholic church renowned for its baroque architecture and exquisite artworks. Also known as the Gesuiti, this grandiose church was commissioned by the Jesuit Order in 1715 and is adorned with impressive frescoes and trompe l'oeil sculptures.
Beautiful church with unique features. I had read about this gem and wanted to visit in person. Not disappointed. The 1 euro charge (that supports the ongoing renovations) was well worth it. Even though the majority of the church is blocked off due to the renovation work, one could still appreciate the grandeur and detail of the marble and stone work inside. Well worth a visit.
Tom C — Google review
I would say that it is the most amazing and magnificent church from the inside in all of Venice. Unfortunately at the moment it is under restauration but it is still worth a visit. We called it the green church because if all the green marble on the floor, walls and columns. The golden ceiling is also very beautiful.

Baroque masterpiece - not short of green and white marble when they built this. The usual Tintorettos and Titians abound cos it’s Venice. Worth a euro.
A T — Google review
There have been countless churches, cathedrals and temples in my exploration of Italy, and yet this one gloriously stands out as a true gem in its striking baroque style. It is under renovation as of early 2025, but it can still be accessed via a small side door near the entrance. Santa Maria Assunta, also known as the Gesuiti Church is fairly modern by italian standards. Built in the early 18th century by the Jesuits, it boasts an extravagant interior covered in white/green marble inlay, creating an illusion of draped fabric. One of its highlights is Titian’s "Martyrdom of St. Lawrence", a dramatic masterpiece where the saint is shown being grilled alive, lit by eerie firelight. Fun fact, the Jesuits were expelled from Venice shortly after the church’s completion, so they barely got to use their architectural masterpiece.

I have seen so many churches but this one has this work of art on marble that looks like wall paper but it’s on marble. Everything was marble. So gergous. It’s only 1€. It’s kind of hidden and not advertised as well as other churches.

Such a beautiful building. It's so odd to find it in the middle of all the residential buildings with no plaza like so many other churches in the city. It's breathtaking. One of my favorites I've seen. Plus, it's not so busy like San Marco. You can actually relax and take in all the detail without being crammed up against a bunch of strangers.
Eliza M — Google review
This magically beautiful Church of Santa Maria Assunta, known in the city as the Jesuit Church, is located in a quiet area of Canaregio in the area closest to the Fondamente Nova. The church faces the Rio dei Gesuiti and stands out above the lagoon, marking the architectural profile of the fondamenta (canals and streets). The church originally belonged to the Crusaders, and only from 1657 did it pass into the hands of the Jesuits who radically changed its appearance. It was financed by the Manin family, an aristocratic Friulan family. The church was consecrated in 1728. The Jesuits in Venice determined that Domenico Rossi, who designed the Church of San Stae, was the ideal architect to do the work they needed. It was not an easy task for him as he had to follow strict plans, which were defined for the Jesuits by the Council of Trent. The façade - designed by G. B. Fattoretto - is an example of the Venetian Baroque of the early eighteenth century, and the whole façade is dominated by the prominent work of the L'Assunzione della Vergine Maria (The Assumption of the Virgin Mary ) statues by Giuseppe Torretti. The interior decoration of fake brocade, actually made of marble inserts, is a real scenographic effect of the church known for its numerous canvases by Jacopo Palma the Younger kept in the sacristy and for the masterpiece of Titian's last work The Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence (1558) on the first altar on the left , which reveals Titian at a turning point, according to the way he experiences the night scene. The next masterpiece is the painting of the altarpiece Assumption of Mary work of Tintoretto, 1555. The ceiling is adorned with beautiful frescoes. In the chancel, Angel musicians in Glory (1720), and on the vaulted ceiling The Triumph of the Name of Jesus (1732), were painted by Ludovico Dorigny. On the ceiling of the nave, Abraham and Three Angels and Vision of St John Evangelist were painted by Francesco Fontebasso in 1734. The chancel is decorated with statues of cherubs, little angels, angels and archangels by Giuseppe Torretti. Around the altar, designed by the Jesuit father Giuseppe Pozzo, ten columns support a green and white dome. A chapel in the church has the monument to Doge Cicogna by Campagna. In addition to the above, the church is extremely rich in other works of art by famous Venetian masters of art. Extremely significant and beautiful church.

The Grand Canal in Venice is a must-see attraction, offering a unique perspective of the city. Instead of opting for an expensive gondola ride, taking the Vaporetto 1 waterbus from P.le Roma to St. Mark's Square provides an affordable and scenic alternative. The journey offers stunning views of Venice's palazzos, iconic landmarks like the Rialto Bridge and Salute church, as well as glimpses of luxurious hotels along the canal.

This waterway runs the entire length of the Lagoon of Venice! There is much traffic on the waterway: water buses, water taxis, gondolas and private boats and amazing to see how they navigate it all. I purchased a 3-Day Water Bus pass and it allowed me to enjoy the beautiful views, massive buildings, Rialto Bridge and exquisite architecture of all the other buildings along the waterway.

It was amazinggg, We loved it.We took the gondola and it was a great experience. We paid 90€ in total for three people. The price does not change depending on the number of people. It is the same whether there are five people. The 30 minute gondola ride is priced at 90€.Definitely take a walk around the back streets, this is essential to understand the spirit of Venice. And definitely eat at more local establishments, it's cheaper and more original.

Line 1 of the vaporetto is Venice’s best show. If you’re lucky enough to get the seats beside the pilot cabin, you feel the city open up: the thrum of the engines, the vibration of the deck plates, the water slapping the hull, and palazzi lit like stage sets as you glide past. Rialto was once the world’s trading floor, where goods from East and West were landed — and you sense that weight of history even now, slipping under its arch by night. A vaporetto ride is Venice’s greatest souvenir: not bought, but lived.

Parrocchia di Santa Maria Formosa is a stunning Renaissance-style church situated in the heart of Venice's historic center. The church, completed in 1492, stands tall and elegant in the Campo di Santa Maria Formosa. Its name, which means 'beautiful,' perfectly suits its graceful architecture and impressive size. The church features a tall campanile and is built in the shape of a Greek cross.

E ( — Google review
The church of Santa Maria Formosa built in 1492, is Mauro Codussi's architectural masterpiece and marks the introduction of the full spatial vision embodied in the Tuscan Renaissance in Venice. The Latin-cross layout, with central nave and two side aisles, respects the foundations of the original 7th-century church which, according to tradition, was one of the eight founded by San Magno, bishop of Oderzo. The name "formosa" ( in latin "beautiful") relates to an alleged appearance of the Holy Virgin disguised as a voluptuous woman. The church is partially maintaining the visibility of the remaking from the 9th-century during which the church enriched with the cupola and a Greek-cross layout. For the external façades, commissioned by the Cappello family, two different styles were chosen, the classical-style façade giving onto the Canal, built in 1542, and the Baroque façade giving onto the small campo in 1604. The interior of the church is beautiful and richly decorated with many magnificent works by famous masters of painting and sculpture. One of the works of art in the church which should not be missed is the "Saint Barbara Polyptych" by Jacopo Palma il Vecchio (1523 ca.), located in the chapel of the Scuola dei Bombardieri, the piece of art that first gave recognization to the artist's name within the city. Opposite it, hangs Leandro Bassano's sombre "Last Supper" (end of the XVI century), whilst in the chapel of the Conception we are find the famous "Triptych of Virgin Mary of Mercy" (1473), which reveals the clear influence of the Mantegna style on Murano artist Bartolomeo Vivarini. While in the Oratory we were delighted with the painting “The Madonna with Child and St. Dominic” by Giambattista Tiepolo (18th century).

Chiesa di Santa Maria del Giglio, also known as Santa Maria del Zobenigo, is a Roman Catholic church in Venice with a stunning Baroque Venetian facade. Built between 1680 and 1683, it houses sacred paintings and is considered one of the most fascinating Venetian Baroque churches. Despite its small size, it's a must-visit for history enthusiasts exploring Venice.
Absolute must see in Venice. Works by Titan and others in a stunning church. Cost is 5€ per adult, 3€ for students. We went in the afternoon on a Monday in May and there were very few people inside. Plan to be there for about 30 minutes. I highly recommend!

Also known as Santa Maria Zobenigo, this church is a stunning example of Venetian Baroque architecture, renowned for its richly decorated façade and remarkable artworks. It was originally founded in the 9th century by the Jubanico family. After being destroyed by two fires in 966 and again in 1105, the church was rebuilt several times. The current structure was designed by Giuseppe Sardi and constructed between 1678 and 1681, with funding from Admiral Antonio Barbaro. The elaborate façade, considered one of the most ornate in Venice, features sculptural representations of Barbaro’s military achievements and maps of cities where he served.

Beyond the Baroque extravagance of the facade and its unique relief maps of Rome and five other cities, step into the treasury to discover an unexpected painting from a distant land and artistic tradition: the only permanent Rubens in Venice. His Madonna and Child bears the artist’s unmistakable signature: a tender, cherubic baby Jesus.

Santa Maria dei Carmini, also known as Santa Maria del Carmelo, features a striking brick and marble facade that still bears the marks of a historic flood. The church was built in 1386 by the Carmelite order and boasts an octagonal window and a curved roofline adorned with statues of Elisha and Elijah. Inside, visitors can admire 12 stone columns dating back to the 14th century.
This Carmelite church features an unusually long and slender nave, its sense of spaciousness amplified by the absence of a transept. Along the upper walls, 24 sweeping friezes vividly bring the stories of the Carmelite order to life. Part of the Chorus Circuit, this church makes a great stop before visiting the adjacent Scuola Grande. And don’t forget to peek into the cloister’s garden — a calm, green oasis tucked away from the city’s bustle.

We found this place more less by a chance on our way to see Foscarini palace. It is just opposite to it and we entered to see interior. It was so nice that we spent the 3,5 EUR per person to have a deeper look. It's a pity that all the paintings are pretty much in dark. An illumination would be definitely useful. Anyway the wooden-golden decoration was beautiful and I agree with the previous review mentioning this place as a "hidden gem".

Cute little church in the middle of Venice’s The pink hue of the exterior definitely catches your eye. While the outside is loud in its visual, the inside is much more humble in the best way possible. Good for a quick prayer and even lively during a mass or sermon. I recommend at least passing by to take a quick peak and say your little prayer if you are into that. If not, at least enjoy the painted ceilings.

The staff was extremely rude (particularly an older man who seemed racist). A far-off-the-list of churches in an area that would seem to be remote but still has heavy tourist traffic. A small but lovely church by Codussi. Square in plan with a bi-lateral crossing (a Greek cross) producing a square in the center bay with a dome. A nice example of how much art and architecture can be packed into a small building. A place more favored by the art aficionados for the beautiful sculpture and paintings, especially a St. Jerome with Saints Christopher and Augustine by Bellini. As a gentle note: as with all churches be respectful. This a neighborhood church and they try to maintain the sanctity of the space in spite of the thundering hordes passing by. If mass is in process either do not go in or put the phones and cameras away and join the service.

Put a euro in various machines and light up different aspects of the church. Some beautiful things here to look at, but like all things in Venice lots of restoration is taking place and this needs supporting.

Nice church but the entrance fee for the crypt is a full scam. You don't see the painted ceiling shown on the pictures and the crypt is a construction site, with cardboard boxes showing behind the crypt. Ruined experience and false advertising.

A very beautiful church with more altarpieces and masterpieces by Tintoretto.

Great way to see a Bernini painting for free. Beautiful church. Don't pay for the catacomb visit, not much to see there

The most beautiful church in the Venice on my opinion. A lot of art, the really unique and my loveliest one is “Adorazione dei pastori”
Olga V — Google review
The Campo is a very agreeable place to sit at a café and have a coffee or grappa while watching the sunlight change on the façade of the church. Inside the church, there is a little museum’s-worth of Renaissance and Mannerist paintings. A number of those are in the sacristy, which requires an entrance fee; however, that also gets you into the crypt, which is fascinating. You go downstairs into the crypt, in other words into the basement, which has a lot of water on the floor. It is curious to think of putting basements in Venetian buildings – but of course that raises greater questions about the whole city. My own favorite of the paintings, however, is in the nave, about halfway down on the left. That is the “Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints”, by Giovanni Bellini. This jewel of an artwork was actually in Paris for a while, thanks to being a part of Napoleon‘s plunder. One edge of the painting was cropped off in the process; but eventually the painting, albeit a few inches shorter, was returned to its home here. The painting is positioned to catch illumination from a window high up on the opposite, southern side of the nave; as this light changes, lighting up different figures in the image, it is a magical experience, somewhat like watching the changing light on the façade – though without any provision for coffee or grappa. If you are too early or too late for this gentle spectacle, 1 € in the machine will provide artificial light.

One of the good churches with the bodies of st Zachariah and St Athanasius. The church has a crypt with water. One of the unknown churches with a museum, a crypt and many artworks of Titian. Most of the wall is covered with painting

This church is said to have been commissioned by a Venetian Duke to house the belongings gifted to Venice by John the Baptist. Unfortunately, in this regard, it is not an impressive church that I would recommend visiting. I visited here just to see some of the paintings inside. I particularly wanted to see the work "Pala di San Zaccaria" by Giovanni Bellini in this church, and when I saw it, I really liked it. You can visit for the paintings inside the church rather than the church itself.

Piazza San Marco, also known as St. Mark's Square, is a historic and iconic gathering place in Venice that dates back to the 12th century. It is dominated by the impressive St. Mark's Basilica and surrounded by significant landmarks such as the Doge's Palace and the National Library of St Mark's. The square has been at the heart of religious belief and political authority in Venice throughout history.
Visiting the tower is truly an immersive experience for the entire family, offering both excitement and wonder from the moment you arrive. As you step onto the grounds, you are greeted by the charm and history of Venice, which immediately sets the tone for an unforgettable adventure. The architectural details of the tower are fascinating to observe up close, from the intricate stonework to the weathered textures that tell stories of centuries past. Exploring the area around the tower allows families to soak in the atmosphere and appreciate the cultural significance of the site, making it much more than just a tourist stop. The highlight of the visit, however, is unquestionably the breathtaking view from the top of the tower. Once you ascend, whether by stairs or elevator, you are rewarded with a panoramic spectacle that stretches across the entire city of Venice. The red-tiled rooftops shimmer in the sunlight, and the winding canals create a mesmerizing pattern that seems to weave the city together like a delicate piece of art. Looking out toward the harbor, you can see ships and gondolas gliding through the water, adding energy and life to the serene horizon. On a clear day, the distant islands and the sparkling Adriatic Sea come into view, providing a scene that feels almost dreamlike. What makes this experience particularly special for families is the way it blends learning and leisure. Children and adults alike can marvel at the geography of the city, while also appreciating the beauty of the Venetian skyline. It is an opportunity to create lasting memories, capture stunning photographs, and gain a new perspective on one of the world’s most enchanting destinations. The visit leaves a lasting impression, making it a must-see highlight in Venice for travelers of all ages.

Beautiful location. Choose the time of year you go as it can become very busy indeed. The streets of Venice are many and varied with many bridges and not a car to be seen. The waterways are busy too, bustling with boats which is entertaining to watch. Easy access by foot straight from the train station. Most definitely worth a visit but go armed with 'maps' on your phone so you don't get lost.

Such a lovely place to visit, the buildings are stunning. Very busy with a great feel and atmosphere. Very easy to get too, with lots of gift shops and stalls very close by, and also ferrry rides and gondola rides on the waterfont. A wonderfully beautiful place to be. Very hapy to have visited here

Beautiful buildings. Not crowded in October. Pleasant weather. Live music in the middle of the Piazza at Cafe Florian. Best place for some photos. I did not visit the building, just drank a coffee and walked around.

In my opinion, Piazza San Marco is one of the most beautiful squares in the world. The entire place feels almost magical — the canals, the buildings, the bell tower, the palace, and the clock all add a unique touch of grandeur and splendor. This square was one of the main reasons I visited Venice, and it truly exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend experiencing its charm in person.
Murillo P — Google review
Piazza San Marco is absolutely stunning — truly the heart of Venice! The architecture is breathtaking, with St. Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, and the Campanile all surrounding the square. There’s something magical about just standing there, listening to the music from the cafés, and watching the world go by. It can get crowded, but it’s 100% worth visiting. Try coming early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s quieter — the atmosphere is unforgettable. A must-see for anyone visiting Venice

I mean… why not! This place is absolutely beautiful at the Golden Hour! There are so many Pigeons, tourist traps and much more, but what did you expect? There are a lot of life performances and Quartetts playing for the restaurants that fill the place with beautiful music!

Beautiful piazza! There's always live music with professional bands at either of the old cafes for everyone to watch and listen. Note that there is no place to sit( except the restaurant tables) at this piazza. You would need to admire the surroundings standing! 😉

Located on an island in Venice, the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore is a stunning 16th-century architectural masterpiece designed by Andrea Palladio. The church features a bright white facade made of Istrian stone and houses impressive works by artists such as Tintoretto, Sebastiano Ricci, Palma il Giovane, and Jacopo Bassano.
It’s a church that we see all the time from San Marco square. We took the boat to visit this time. There is a temporary exhibition during the restoration of their two main paintings. Instead of the original ones, they put two modern art paintings. Thé contrast is somehow interesting. The church is free entry by the way.

it was so worth going 2 mins across the water for the view and also cheaper to go up the campanile here than san Marco's. it was €8 cash only to go up via lift only. you get a fantastic view of the main island and san Marco without a crowd. entry to the church itself is free. can't recommend coming here enough
Vertina T — Google review
Not worth it IMHO. The labyrinth is expensive and it's a tribute to a rich man by another rich man's foundation. Yawn. Go instead to the campanile at the top on a clear day to enjoy nice views. But save the 15 euros and save the insect bites

I visited September 2nd. I studied Palladian architecture at Cambridge when I was younger and this was my first time to Italy so I had to visit this beautiful church. It was truly amazing the composite pilasters and columns, the Diocletian windows and especially the high altar. Later that morning Isabella gave me a wonderful behind the scenes tour. Beautiful art, and the room where the conclave met 1799-1800 to elect Pius VII. Pro tip: I enjoyed going up the campanile here more than the crowded San Marco one! Next time I return to Venice I will visit this lovely church again!!!
Rob R — Google review
Beautiful church with impressive art and the unique mindset to have some modern art as part of the worship space. Forward thinking monastic curator and community. So sad that the elevation was broken- no stairs to go up the bell tower! Worth the short ferry ride, with a beautiful view. Not much else on the island.
Randy H — Google review
Great place, a bit far away from standard tourist routes. There is even a little modern art exhibition at the basilica. Unfortunately, the bell tower was closed for renovations.
Eugenia G — Google review
Worth the effort to get across the lagoon to see the church (free) and to take the elevator to the top of the tower for 8 euros per person (cash only) It's not crowded and the views are fantastic. I found it interesting to watch the choreographed chaos of the boats from this vantage point. It's a wonder there aren't more collisions

An inconspicuous basilica with a rich history. In the past, it even hosted conclaves. Entrance to the basilica is free, you can walk up to the bell tower, which offers unique views. This place is definitely not to be missed when visiting Venice.

Trattoria Busa alla Torre is a renowned restaurant on Murano island, known for its delightful cuisine and the charismatic owner, Lele. Situated near the famous Clock Tower or Torre del Orologio, it offers a charming courtyard for summer dining. Despite potential long waits for food, patrons can enjoy chatting with Lele and savoring a glass of wine.
I didn’t expect to have one of my best restaurant experiences in Murano, but this place truly surprised me. The food was excellent — the best meal I had during my entire trip to Milan and Venice. The owner is a great and kind man who served us himself with such respect and warmth, which made our experience even more enjoyable. We tried the grilled salmon and tagliolini ai funghi with a salad — both were absolutely delicious. Also I tried tiramisu which was the best I have ever tested. I definitely recommend trying this place — I’m sure you won’t regret it.

Busa alla Torre is a Murano institution, named for the vanished belltower of San Stefano. Set in a sunlit square, it’s famed among locals for Venetian authenticity and fresh seafood. I began with moeche fritte – soft-shell lagoon crabs, a rare spring and autumn delicacy, sweet, salty, and egg-crisp, offset by fried seasonal vegetables. Then came spaghetti alla marinara: pasta perfectly al dente, with fresh shellfish, ripe tomato, and a lift of parsley – proper delicious. Espresso closed with traditional biscuits: buttery esse Buranei and golden zaeti. Honest, vibrant Venetian cooking.

The best: outside lunch with a view. Tables outside surrounded by the beautiful church and the canal are priceless. They offer a fixed menu (15€) that is a good deal actually: first dish, second dish and side dish. I enjoyed the pasta alle cozze, it was the best of what I've tried. As second, I had fish that was no good no bad. No taste at all I would say. House wine was good too. Clean bathroom.

Plates for the outside area are stored outside, uncovered with pigeons walking all over them, wouldn’t be a problem if the top plate wasn’t used but it was handed to a customer who we then informed. Pigeons were also in the bread bin which the staff we’re leaving open, hard to tell from where I was sat if the bread was covered or not within the basket. Just got drinks, decided not to eat.

Highly recommend this place for excellent pasta. We tried the seafood pasta and the one with clams. The sauce was just right: thick, not too oily, and very well balanced. The seafood was fresh, and the service was warm and welcoming — polite and respectful. I’d definitely choose to dine there again if I had more time in Venice.

Came here for a group dinner so review might be slightly skewed. The seafood risotto is great especially with the Parmesan cheese provided. Calamari tasted fresh but a little too greasy. Apparently they ran out of tiramisu at the end… the cake we had tasted like pure sugar and it was hard…
Michelle L — Google review
After visiting the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute nearby, we walked past this restaurant and decided to stop in for lunch. When we got there, the main entrance was dead and the outdoor seating just inside the courtyard area was empty, which made us think this wasn’t a very popular place. But when we went inside, they were packed! They have two large indoor dining rooms and both were packed! Service was quick and friendly. Their menu is loaded with all the typical, appetizing Italian food. Prices are very fare too. We started with a salad that was incredibly fresh and very tasty… We simply dressed it with salt & pepper and EVOO & balsamic and that was perfect! Next up, we split their Linguine with Genoese Pesto and their Baked Lasagna and both were outstanding! The creaminess and deep flavor of the lasagna was so good and heart warming! Last up was to enjoy some desserts – they have a great selection of sweets here. Highly recommend stopping in, but you might want to make a reservation, they seem to get quite busy.

A hidden gem in Venice! Just a few minutes' walk from our accommodation was an oasis of tranquillity. The fresh salad was fantastic (we went back the next night just for that!). An entire sea bass was the evening's special and we were thoroughly entertained by the server's table side preparation. When in Venice, San Trovaso is a must!

The best restaurant I’ve been to during my two-week trip to Italy! I loved it so much that I ended up dining there several times during my stay in Venice. The food was incredibly fresh and full of flavor — every dish tasted homemade and carefully prepared. We ended up trying most of the items on the menu, and each one was just as delicious as the last. A bit too salty tho

Visited November 2024 - Set in a former boat shed, San Trovaso has high rafters and a neighbourly warmth that feels more local haven than tourist stop, despite being steps from the Galleria dell’Accademia. The seafood is fresh, authentic, and well priced. Antipasto Venexiano brought sarde in saor, baccalà mantecato, canestrelli, folpetti, schie with polenta and more - a neat 7.5/10. Seppie alla Veneziana, braised in their own ink with polenta, was delicate and fresh from the lagoon - 8/10. Frittura mista, crisp and lively with prawns that bounced to the bite and garden vegetables for lightness, was a satisfying 8.5/10. One of my favourites in Venice.

Punta della Dogana - Pinault Collection is a contemporary art museum housed in a former customs house at the convergence of Grand Canal and Giudecca Canal. The building itself is an architectural marvel, featuring the iconic sculptural work of two Atlases lifting a golden bronze sphere topped with Fortune indicating wind direction. Renovated by renowned architect Tadao Ando after years of neglect, it now serves as a venue for international contemporary artworks.
I wish to focus on the stunning 270 views this vantage point offers. The contemporary art collection curated by François Pinault might not be everyone's cup of tea. After passing the former 17th-century customs building (now the contemporary art museum) you’ll reach the end of Fondamenta Salute. From here, the entire San Marco basin unfolds before you. It's a quiet spot, despite the almost constant boat traffic. But that's always fun to observe. So, take a seat on the warm stone quay, let your legs dangle over the water, and enjoy the action. People will constantly come and go behind you, as this spot serves as a popular backdrop for selfies with St. Mark's Square and the Doge's Palace. I recommend visiting (also) at sunrise for the magical pink hues of the Doge’s Palace and again after dark to witness the incredible transformation of the city.

Fantastic art museum with the interior designed by the great Tadao Ando (born 1941). The current Thomas Schütte (born 1954) exhibition looks great in Ando's spaces. Following Schütte's retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, this is another great show of his work.
Nils P — Google review
A stunning example of how contemporary architecture can live within Venetian heritage. Tadao Ando’s renovation is subtle yet powerful — calm concrete surfaces, quiet light, and perfect proportions. When we visited, there was a Thomas Schütte exhibition, and the sculptures interacted beautifully with the building’s minimal geometry. Entry was €15 per person with a teacher discount, and absolutely worth it. Everything about the experience — the curation, the space, the silence — felt precise and deeply moving.

This is a particular flavor of art. In a city full of historical significance and art, the Pinault offers the ultra modern art experience. There were some pieces during this particular time that I didn't get. Others were very cool and wonderful. They don't pack pieces in all together with no room to breathe. It almost seemed that each art piece had its own entire room. And some are pieces were the room. There were some with audio, touch, and of course visual. Both my husband and I absolutely appreciate all art and this was no exception. It's definitely not our favorite kind, but there were some really cool pieces. This is very unique experience and a fantastic way to take a break from the pre-Renaissance and Renaissance art that fills Venice.

Isola di San Michele is a spacious and lush island surrounded by red walls, featuring a cemetery dating back to the early 1800s and a chapel. The island is part of the Venetian archipelago, located near other notable islands such as Murano and Giudecca. Its history dates back to the 8th century when the first church was built in honor of San Giorgio.

If you like visiting historical cemeteries, this is the place to check out. Make sure to be at the front of the vaporetto to get off quickly at the dock. Like NYC subways, they didn't wait for us to get off the first time around with a big crowd by the exit, and we had to make a second trip to get back. Bring a mosquito repellent. For some reason I got bitten more there than everywhere else in Venice. Once there, it's a treasure hunt - Stravinsky and his wife, Diaghilev, Ezra Pound and his partner, Doppler, sections for the military, the clergy, babies, osorium, etc. If you like to visit the chapel, check the hours before you go. It's open only at certain times.
Cyndie S — Google review
The island serves as Venice’s main cemetery, with separate sections for Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant burials. In 1807, under a Napoleonic decree banning burials within the city, the island was officially designated as Venice’s cemetery. Originally, the site consisted of two separate islands—San Michele and San Cristoforo—but these were joined between 1835 and 1839 by filling in the canal between them. The Church of San Michele, designed by Mauro Codussi in 1469, is considered one of the earliest examples of Renaissance architecture in Venice. Next to the church once stood a monastic complex, parts of which are still preserved today.

An interesting place to visit. A large well maintained cemetery that is several centuries old. There are signs to Stravinsky's grave. The facade of the large building that you can usually see from the Venice side is the only presentable side of the building. The rest of the place looks rough. Gardens are well cared for and it's still an active cemetery. Still worth a 30 minute visit. Easiest way to get here from Ferrovia, the train station stop, is to take a direct ACTV water bus line 3 to Murano and then catch line 4.1. here.

One of the few destinations to really experience the Venetian Baroque. The building itself is 17th century, while the refined decors are 18th century; and in the second-floor salon may be found nine paintings by Tiepolo, perhaps the quintessential Venetian late Baroque/Rococo Painter. (Perhaps his vivid and limpid canvases make him the quintessential Venetian painter, period.) In the ground floor salon are presented concerts of Baroque music, often including composers other than Vivaldi!

A gilded hideaway away from the heat and crowds of Venice. The only disappointment is that it's not larger because you'll want to spend hours appreciating the frescos, sculptures, tile floors, and wood paneling. Though not officially founded until the year 1594 under Doge Pasquale Cicogna, and was the last of its kind to be recognized as a Scuola Grande in 1767 by the Council of Ten, the Scuola Grande dei Carmini traces its roots to 1286, when the institution was established as one of the earliest civic and charitable confraternities in Venice. Work on the Scuola Grande continued from 1626, when the order expanded its original building, through 1668, when it acquired a second building to accommodate its growing needs. The confraternity commissioned Baldassare Longhena to redesign both structures and produce a single, unified façade for the two buildings. Longhena, whose work in Venice (including the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute) made him one of the period’s most celebrated architects, worked on the project until his death in 1682. Construction continued under Longhena’s associate, the architect Antonio Gaspari. Works by contemporary Venetian painters and sculptors decorate interior spaces, and nine ceiling canvases by Giambattista Tiepolo, completed in 1739, adorn the scuola’s Sala Capitolare ( the Chapter Hall ). A magnificent hall was used for Scuola meetings. The hall was decorated between 1664 and 1674 by Domenico Bruni. The main altar is dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, protector of the brotherhood, the painting of the altarpiece, an oil on canvas of the Venetian painter Sante Piatti, represents it.

The Church of Saint Mary of the Rosary 'Gesuati' is a stunning 18th-century Dominican church located in the Sestiere of Dorsoduro, along the Giudecca canal. Built between 1726 and 1735 by renowned Venetian Baroque architect Giorgio Massari, it features an opulent Rococo style adorned with elaborate frescoes, sculptures, and paintings.
I haven't been inside but had rather the chance of watching it almost from the air, 50 metres high, on top of a big cruise ship. As for neighbouring churches and the whole of this waterfront that's the best way to view it, along with going to other bank and watching from there. Amazing view of this temple closely embedded in the neighbourhood.

This is a church right by the water. It's not the most popular church in Venice but it's a beautiful one nonetheless. It's free for anyone to enter and though tourists come in to take photos, it's peaceful enough if you want to say a prayer.

Santa Maria del Rosario commonly known as I Gesuati, is an 18th-century Dominican church in the Sestiere of Dorsoduro, on the Giudecca canal. It's beautiful church with a rich history and beautiful paintings and sculptures. The church and almost all its sculpture and paintings were created within a thirty-year period, construction began in 1725, the church was consecrated in 1743, and the last sculptural decoration was in place by 1755. The religious order of the Jesuates, formally the Clerici apostolici Sancti Hieronymi was founded in Siena in the 14th century and had a presence in Venice by 1390. Its members were known as I poveri Gesuati (the poor Jesuates) because they frequently called on the name of Jesus, they had no connection with the Jesuits (I Gesuiti), whose church is in the north of Venice. They acquired some wealth from donations and legacies and from privileges granted by the state, including a monopoly on the distillation of wine. In 1493, they commenced the building of a small church on land fronting the Zattere (the fondamenta which borders the Giudecca Canal facing the Giudecca island), where the other buildings of the order stood. This church was originally dedicated to St. Jerome (San Girolamo) and later to Santa Maria della Visitazione (St. Mary of the Visitation) and became known as the church of the Visitation. Later, the order found it hard to recruit new members and a falling off in numbers combined with slackness in the performance of their duties led to its suppression by Pope Clement IX in 1668. In 1669 their property was put up for auction and acquired by the Dominicans, who installed themselves there in 1670. It became known as the Dominicans' place at the Gesuati and the Venetians have to this day continued to use the name. The Dominicans wished the building to celebrate the glories of their order and to encourage devotion to the rosary. The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary had been made part of the General Roman Calendar in 1716 after a victory over the Turks. Everyone is enchanted by the rich facade with many statues. The statues represent the four cardinal virtues, Prudence, Justice, Fortitude and Temperance. But above all we were delighted by the beautiful, rich interior of the church with beautiful paintings. The ceiling decoration was entrusted to Giovanni Battista Tiepolo who signed a contract with the Dominicans in May 1737. It was completed by 1739. There are three frescos in the ceiling. Nearest the entrance is the Glory of St. Dominic (his assumption into heaven) and nearest the altar is the Appearance of the Virgin to St. Dominic, while in the centre is a large fresco, a great masterpiece, representing the Institution of the Rosary.

Exploring Venice's Architectural Gem: The Church of Saint Mary of the Rosary (Gesuati) Nestled in the heart of Venice, the Church of Saint Mary of the Rosary, commonly known as Gesuati, is a remarkable testament to Venetian art and architecture. This stunning church, located on the Zattere promenade, is renowned for its breathtaking façade and the rich history it embodies. The exterior of the Church of Saint Mary of the Rosary is an exquisite example of late Baroque architecture, designed by Giorgio Massari. The façade is elegantly decorated with statues of religious figures that complement its grand structure, inviting visitors into a world of spiritual and artistic reverence. Upon entering, the interior presents a magnificent display of artistic masterpieces. The church houses an impressive collection of paintings by some of the greatest Venetian painters of the 18th century, such as Giambattista Tiepolo, Sebastiano Ricci, and Giambattista Piazzetta. Their works contribute to the church’s serene and uplifting atmosphere, making it a haven for art lovers and spiritual seekers alike. One of the highlights of visiting the Church of Saint Mary of the Rosary is viewing Tiepolo’s celebrated ceiling frescoes, which depict scenes from the New Testament and the life of the Virgin Mary. These frescoes not only showcase Tiepolo's mastery of color and form but also enrich the spiritual experience with their beauty and narrative depth. The Church of Saint Mary of the Rosary stands not just as a place of worship but also as a cultural treasure in Venice. Its location away from the more crowded tourist spots allows for a more contemplative visit, where one can appreciate the quiet beauty and historical significance of this sacred space. In conclusion, the Church of Saint Mary of the Rosary (Gesuati) is a must-visit for those interested in the convergence of art, history, and spirituality. Its architectural splendor and the artistic treasures it houses make it a unique and enriching part of any visit to Venice.

Paid church. Requires payment even for a prayer. Totally wrong. Reply to the owner: I appreciate your answer, but not everyone has courage to ask not to pay when payment is required. I suggest to include information that entrance for prayer is free on request. I believe that most tourists will still pay. Another option is to make access free in specific hours. Requiring entrance fee for access to church just doesn’t look good. I understand that the church may need financial support, but I believe it can be solved in a more elegant and respectful way. I’m also surprised that the government isn’t supporting historical monuments instead.

++THANKS for 28.000 Clicks on the Pictures +++ Sometimes, interestingly enough, Google, the most powerful search engine (that is, indeed, the "true nature", by all means) of the world shows remarkable lacks. Bad ! To explain : Punta della Dogana, an incredible place looking in Venezia both to the Laguna and Piazza San Marco, is indeed a historic place, of the customs offices, and the French milliardaire (warehouses) came only later. Most likely, you do not really need some English artists, better go to the nearby (indeed) Salute Church, great. And look at the moving water, as on photograph. One of the ways to come to Punta is via Zattere, which is opposite to Giudecca, the island on the other side. At 6 a.m. in the mornig it is very quiet, and you can see the incoming ships, including, as I did, a huge several masts sail boat, great luxury. Shortly after 6 a.m., if you are at right time, sun will go up, and you have some light on San Marco, on the other side. Need a good camera ! The place overall is like a kind of twisted "croissant", but the waters are moving. At the end, walk up Zattere, go to the Gesuati church, and have a look at the Joseph Brodsky Memorial plate, looking out for Giudecca. Very moving indeed, remembering Brodsky as a Poet ! What more ?

Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Martino di Castello is a historic church located in the sestiere Castello near the Arsenal. It has a rich history dating back to Roman times and has endured wars, conflicts, and natural disasters like the 2008 earthquake. The church was originally founded in the 10th century and later rebuilt from 1546 to 1610 by Jacop Sansovino's design.
The beautiful church of San Martino is located in the sestiere Castello near the Arsenal. Originally founded in the 10th century, it was rebuilt from 1546 to 1610 according to the plan of Jacop Sansovino. The title of San Martino di Tours suggests the presence of a colony of Lombards, especially dedicated to his character or Ravenna fugitives, in relation to the patron saint of one of their basilicas. Martino of Tours was a Christian bishop born in the fourth century. A native of Pannonia, in present-day Hungary, he served in Galia of the late Roman Empire. He is among the first non-martyr saints proclaimed by the Catholic Church, worshiped by both Orthodox and Coptic believers. It is celebrated on November 11, the day of his funeral held in today’s Tours. He is one of the founders of monasticism in the West. The church is interesting from the outside as well as from the inside. A first refurbishment was built between the 9th and 10th centuries, when it assumed the Venetian-Byzantine style, typical of the places of worship of the time. The current construction dates back to the sixteenth century, based on a project by Jacopo Sansovino. The architect rotated the entire structure ninety degrees and gave it a square floor plan, adding two chapels to each side and the vaulted presbytery. The facade (1897) was designed by Federico Berchet and Domenico Rupolo. The interior of the church is magnificent. The vault is frescoed with "Saint Martin in Glory" by Jacopo Guarana, with the "quadratura" ("Illusionistic ceiling painting", which includes the techniques of perspective di "sotto in sù" and "quadratura", is the tradition in Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo art) painted by Domenico Bruni. An intresting funeral monument (1633) to Doge Francesco Erizzo was completed by Matteo Carneri. A chapel has a fresco cycle of "the Glory of the Eucharist" flanked by "Sacrifice of Isaac" and "Sacrifice of Mechizedek (Malki Tzedek)" on the walls by Fabio Canal. On the third altar there is the beautiful "the Madonna Addolorata" by Palma il Giovane, flanked by "Tre angeli che recano", "simboli della passione" and "Deposizione di Cristo" by the same author.

(Translated by Google) You suddenly find yourself in front of the white marble façade of this church, the dedication of which is unknown, and you are left stunned. Wonder, here is the primary reaction which is followed by amazement and then we think and ask ourselves, what architect or designer could have come up with to decorate the facade in this way. Telamons, masks, floral garlands, protruding projections and then the bust with the portrait of a nobleman who, certainly, will have had an important part in the conception and financing of the construction of the sacred building. With your eyes directed towards the sky to admire the facade, since the street is narrow and there is no useful space for a clear view, you roll your gaze to try to see everything that the architect and the sculptor have positioned on the facade . The church, unfortunately, is not open, but there is a sign that says that it is possible to book a visit inside, as the sacred building is part of the hospital complex. Here's another opportunity to return to the lagoon.

Lido Venice Beach, a 12-kilometer strip of sand, was Europe's first beach resort and a fashionable destination for royalty and celebrities in the early 20th century. Today, grand hotels still own beautiful fine-sand beaches where guests can enjoy for a fee. Public beaches are located near the church of San Nicolo at the north end of the island. This area is beloved by locals who escape to its shores on weekends to unwind from city life.
Not the best sea that I swam in (it was very wavy and blurred) yet it felt great to visit here for a day. I rented an umbrella with sun chair for 20€ and also had good cafe and croissant 🥐 I came here from Venice with a boat, which also was a nice trip

A highly underrated beach only 30 minutes via Ferry from the heart of Venice. It was well worth the visit, the walking portion was long but there were areas to stop and rest if needed. Or there was a bus line available if you're really exhausted. There were SO many shells on the beach, made for some fun shell-hunting. Waves were low, the sand was soft and the water was shallow enough for kiddos to play! One thing I didn't love, you have to pay to use the restrooms! $1-$2 per person to use the toilets.
Taylor M — Google review
Well. Free so not 3xpected much, however when we asked where is the toilet and how we can access, the lady with the sunbrella shouted on us, what we want in the toilet... Unfortunately very dirty, people half nude which not appropriate front of the kids also. Next time we will go to the paid side.

Went to the free beach and there were many bad impressions. The place looked rundown. There were broken signs telling that there are no life guards and you are on your own. The guard towers had red flags (I interpreted it as a warning sign), yet people were swimming and it didn't seem dangerous. There was a lot of trash in the sand. A couple of annoying carpet sellers. Tractor wheel tracks all over the beach next to the water. So the place felt unmaintained. The water was nice though. So it's possible to have a good time here. Just too bad that nobody seems to care about maintaining the free beach.

I loved the cleanness of the room and the size of it of course! The facilities are all very new and neat. This small island opposite to Venice central area is very quiet and even a bit isolated. But if you want a quiet vacation then this place is perfect. The food supply in the only cafe they have on this island is quite limited and the food just doesn’t match their menu. (Quite a few items they don’t actually have but printed on the menu). Also they don’t have laundry powder in the laundry room. There’s dryers and washing machines in one of the residential buildings and free for use, but without laundry powder, what’s the purpose for the room anyway? The laundry service is a joke when I needed to do laundry the most. Apart from these, my overall stay was fair and satisfying.

Catholic church
The Oratorio Ex Ospizio Briati church in Murano, Venice boasts a stunning exterior with an exquisite aged patina. Situated off of Calle Bressagio, this Catholic church offers a beautiful and serene environment. The surroundings of the church are captivating, featuring a unique glass Christmas tree that adds a touch of whimsy. With its remarkable beauty and historical significance, the Oratorio Ex Ospizio Briati stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region.
An old catholic church in Murano. The visitors usually come for the glass factories but this church can be visited also. The texture of the region is preserved.

(Translated by Google) A wonderful walk through Murano, a sunny spring day on Bressagio Street towards the lighthouse. On our way we discovered this gorgeous building, in tune with the Venetian style! (Original) O plimbare minunata prin Murano, o zi insorita de primavara pe strada Bressagio spre far. In drumul nostru am descoperit aceasta constructie superba, in ton cu stilul Venezian!
