Art museum
Museums
The Museo del Barro is a unique museum that showcases a diverse collection of Latin American and Paraguayan art, including pottery, ancient relics, contemporary art, indigenous artifacts, and rural crafts. With over 4,000 artworks and artifacts on display, the museum offers an immersive journey through 500 years of Paraguay's history. Visitors can explore intricate lace weavings from the 18th century alongside well-preserved examples of Franciscan religious art.
Amazing museum! Better than some state museums. Visit it , if you want to know about Paraguayan/guarani material culture.

Well worth stopping by, full of interesting Paraguan art, from all cultures in the country. Lots and lots to see
Alex D — Google review
Very, very nice! Quillermo explained us many things and is a wonderful ‘host’ and artist himself! Many thanks, we had a wonderful time!
Remco V — Google review
Great place with a lot of culture in Asunción, amazing pictures and old newspapers that showcase the history of Paraguay. Furthermore we can find a rich collection of different native tribes and religious artifacts and more
David C — Google review
Okay museum, rather disappointed after all the hype. Great pre-Columbian collection, probably the best in the southern cone and very well labeled. Large collection of colonial religious art, but very poorly labeled. (If interested in art from the Jesuit and Franciscan missions in paraguay, much better to visit the Sacred Art Museum downtown, beautifully done.) The contemporary collections were disappointing. The indigenous collections just seem like tourist trinkets commissioned for the museum. (If interested in indigenous artifacts, much better to visit the ethnographic museum downtown - it has one of the best collections in all of LATAM.) Make sure to visit the bathrooms, which are filled with exhibits. If you only visit one museum in Asunción, I guess this one is okay. But besides pre-Columbian art, the many specialty museums downtown are better.
Josiah W — Google review
A whirlwind of South American art, from pre-Columbian to contemporary and spanning pretty much all media (sculpture, painting, textile, photographic and so on) and genres, from figurative to conceptual. The museum is not huge, but it is brimful of art objects. To me it lacks some organization of the exposition, there is no clear logical path from a room to the next and some more explanation of what's on display. I found the pre-Columbian sculpture to be the most interesting, but the overall feeling of being immersed in an ever changing kaleidoscope of art was also thrilling. The entrance ticket of about 7 US Dollars equivalent is more than fair, but it is even better on Fridays and Saturdays, when the entrance is completely free! Judging from the visitor logbook it would seem that the museum is more popular amongst foreigners and tourist than the local Paraguayan, and it is in fact an excellent way to have a 360 degrees glimpse of Paraguayan art through the centuries and up to the XXI century. Highly recommended!
Niccolo' B — Google review
Great place. A beautiful and interesting exhibition. Very well presented exhibits of traditional Indian and contemporary art. The service was very nice and helpful. You can communicate in English. I highly recommend this place to everyone.
Nowicka G — Google review
If you want to know Paraguayan old and new culture, Museo del Barro is the best place to visit. We went there by walking from Paseo La Galeria. It took 10 minutes. There were a lot of exhibits. We spent time around 1 hour and half there. Their opening hours are limited but it’s worth to visit if you go Asunción.

Government Buildings
The Palacio de López, a stately neoclassical building constructed in 1857, serves as the office of the president and the seat of government. Named after a prominent 19th-century political figure, Francisco Solano López, this iconic structure is located near the city center and overlooks the riverbank. Guarded by a significant number of policemen due to its governmental significance, it also houses various government offices.
The most iconic and recognizable building in Asunción, and arguably in the whole of Paraguay, is Palacio de López, officially titled Palacio de Gobierno (Palace of Government). It was built by order of Carlos Antonio López, the 1st President of Paraguay (1844 - 1862) and now serves as a workplace for the President of Paraguay, and is also the seat of the government of Paraguay. The palace used to be all white not too many years ago, but it has been painted in a distinctive pink color now and it is kept brightly illuminated at night, showing off its new color and its neoclassical architectural features. The palace has, I feel, lots of common traits with the country of Paraguay: it is rather small (especially considering that it is both the seat of government and the office of the President), very open and welcoming with colonnades and large windows and an unthreatening pink color. If you have a chance I suggest to go see it a night when the light makes it look its best and the armed military on premise make the area eminently safe. You can walk on the sidewalk in front of the Palace, but, even if there are no barriers in place, you can not get any closer to it.
Niccolo' B — Google review
Beautiful building but it is the official residence (I believe) so you cannot get close
David R — Google review
A very beautiful building that’s great to admire from all angles. It’s protected well by the roaming guards so you can’t get up close, and don’t even dare to put one foot on the grass, but you still get a great view from a distance. Clearly the highlight of the city and deservedly so.
Steve B — Google review
Neoclassical palace that serves as the seat of government and workplace of the Paraguayan president. It was built by Carlos Antonio López, the leader of Paraguay from 1841 to 1862, to serve as a home for his son. One should also come at night to see it lit up, and it is well-guarded.
James — Google review
It's a beautiful building! There are armed guards all over the place. You can't enter the property, but you can take a picture from the sidewalk. The guards were intimidating, but they were fine as long as you didn't try to access the grounds.
Heather S — Google review
The Presidential Palace in Asunción is a beautiful landmark and a must-see when visiting the city. Its architecture is stunning, especially when lit up at night, and it carries a lot of historical and cultural significance. The surrounding area is well-kept, offering great spots for photos and a nice walk along the river. While entry inside may be limited, just viewing it from the outside is worth the visit. A true symbol of Paraguay’s history and an iconic part of Asunción’s charm.
Achal R — Google review
If you like beautiful buildings, you're gonna like this one. When I went there, it was all lit up during the evening. A very nice sight to see.

Bolsi is a renowned restaurant in Asuncion, known for its superb menu and welcoming atmosphere. It stands out with its extensive opening hours, serving customers until the early hours of the morning and reopening for breakfast. The restaurant offers a variety of dishes including Paraguayan, Brazilian, and Argentinean cuisine.
Review of Bolsi – Asunción, Paraguay What a great spot! Our servers, Cynthia and Isabela, were both very friendly and charming. We used Google Translate to bridge the Spanish–English gap, and they made us feel welcome throughout the meal. Food Highlights: Bife de Chorizo (400g): A delicious sirloin strip steak marinated with butter, herbs, and sea salt. Served with rustic mashed potatoes, garlic confit, and crispy shoestring onions. This was recommended by Isabela, and she was right—it was fantastic! For lunch, the portion was huge—I only managed half and took the rest to go. Vori-Vori: A traditional Paraguayan chicken stew with cheesy corn flour balls. The chicken was moist, and the broth was rich and flavorful. A must-try local dish. Empanadas: We shared two—Carne and Chilean style. Both were excellent. Drink: I tried the local Sajonia “Naranjito,” a refreshing light lager with a subtle citrus twist. Perfect for the warm afternoon. Overall Experience: An excellent restaurant with a mix of local and international dishes, great service, and generous portions. We found it especially nice for lunch—at night, the area around the restaurant can feel a little quiet and less lively compared to newer parts of town. Highly recommended if you’re visiting Asunción!
David L — Google review
It's a fun place to hang out and cheap. I advise you to get empanadas in a beer. They overcooked my last day otherwise I would have given it a higher rating.
Karen B — Google review
My bill was 236,000 guaranies. We did not have a good experience at this well known place. We arrived around 11:15am, before the lunch rush. The staff kept passing by us, and we had to keep getting their attention. We were there more than 20 minutes before getting even a drink order in. Then a total of an hour before our food arrived. I saw it just sitting in the window, and had to ask for it to be picked up. When my wrap arrived it was under seasoned, the lettuce was soggy and brown and the meat a light brown or grey color. We tried to get the attention of supervisor, she was on her phone for the entire time we were there. Literally the entire hour, at the register on her phone. She just looked at me and then ignored me. We counted 9 employees standing around not doing anything. It looks like they are overstaffed and underdeliver. No one came to ask how our our meal was. I usually give a large tip, but could not in this case. I will not be returning and cannot recommend this place. Oveja Negra, or Mariscal Shopping are much better restaurant choices. The sushi was delicious. But overall very dissapointed.
Jay — Google review
We had the Cesar salad, and the canastita de comidas típicas, as well as a chop and piña colada (I did not like it). the food was very good! The best part was the service, our waiter Cesar was extremely kind and helpful.
Ash — Google review
Interesting place. They have a huge variety of dishes, baked goods, and drinks including nice draft beer. Server was nice to us despite language barrier caused by us. But they did not have any of the items I ordered to eat e.g. several seafood items, so to me it looked like the extensive menu was more of a wish list versus something they actually have to eat, which I find frustrating, as they let me order beer and requested food but took 10 minutes to tell us we don’t have your food. Still I rate them well because other customers seemed to be enjoying their bakery case items which I did not care to eat for lunch. Anyways the beer was cheap and good.
GT H — Google review
My place in Asuncion. Been there many times. Loved (almost) everything. The only reason for the 4 not 5 stars, is that there no prices (which are reasonable) on the menu. Come on guys! And some music will do as well.
Gad T — Google review
Nice café in a convenient location, just around the corner from the Panteón. The service was good and the atmosphere pleasant. There’s a lovely outdoor seating area to enjoy your drink. Even if the views aren’t the best (except for the mural on the building in front of it) it is a nice spot to stop and relax.
Natalia B — Google review
I’ve been traveling through Central and South America for the past four months, and I’ve learned that great restaurants can truly elevate the entire journey. On my visit to Asunción, my hotel manager recommended this spot — and I ended up dining here two nights in a row. It’s a fantastic place, especially if you’re traveling solo like I am. The restaurant features a beautiful U-shaped table encircling a central area, giving it a warm, Spanish-style charm. The staff were exceptional: well-trained, genuinely friendly, and wonderfully attentive without being intrusive. The food? Consistently excellent — every dish was a hit. I can wholeheartedly recommend making this restaurant part of your Asunción experience.

Centro Cultural Manzana de la Rivera is a cultural complex located in Asuncion, Paraguay. It consists of nine restored buildings that house a library, museum, theater, and cafe. The center was established as a result of a restoration campaign led by Paraguayan architecture students in 1989. The complex features colonial-era architecture and offers exhibition spaces showcasing artistic pieces that reflect the city's history.
Best to visit this place with a guide. So much history within these walls as the cultural center serves as a small museum. Especially not speaking the local language well, a guide was the perfect way to go.
Debbie F — Google review
I love this space in Asuncion but unfortunately the last time I went to visit the gallery spaces were empty. With already so little spaces for art in the city, it’s a shame that a place like Manzana de la Rivera doesn’t organize enough for their galleries to be used and lived in by artists. I came from very far away and was looking forward to discover new great Paraguayan artists and found empty spaces. Really sad.
Alexandra R — Google review
Wonderful collection of cultural, art, and city historical museums, a library, cafe, performance stage, and courtyard. Rarely have I seen such a nice collection of museums, all free to visit. The city history museum is excellent and should not be missed. Everyone there was very welcoming. As a foreign speaking visitor, I found myself wishing there was a directory at the entrance listing of all the museums available, but we are curious and not shy people so we just popped in every open door and everything was fine. So if you are visiting, you must explore and engage. For example, we nearly missed the city museum as it is sort of back inside the complex beyond a cafe behind a closed door.
GT H — Google review
Super centric cultural center absolutely worth visiting, and not only because the entrance is completely free. It includes a museum, a permanent collection and spaces for exhibitions, as well as the lovely Casa Clari bar restaurant with the absolute best view on the Presidential Palace of Paraguay. Without going into the museum, the cultural center can be easily explored in about half an hour to an hour and the main courtyard is a great example of old architecture with patios and some greenery. The only downside is that, regarding the exhibitions spaces, there is little to no information about the works of art you are seeing. Still highly recommended for a visit and, obviously, with an unbeatable quality to price ratio (as it is free).
Niccolo' B — Google review
Very nice cultural center and beautiful restaurant inside with nice views. Casa Clari is a little overpriced but nice to visit once in a while.

Mercado 4, also known as Mercado Cuatro locally, is a bustling and expansive market located in Asuncion. Unlike typical tourist markets, Mercado 4 caters to all segments of society, offering a wide range of products from fresh fruits and vegetables to affordable imported goods. The market's vibrant atmosphere resembles an Arab souk with its array of scents and colors.
This place has everything, but easy tot get lost. Definitely mark where you parked. Vendors seemed helpful to point us in the direction of the next thing we were looking for if they didn’t offer it. It was a real shopping adventure.
Tina B — Google review
Good place to find cheap produce and goods of all kinds for reasonable prices. I'd be wary of pickplckets and bring little of value just in case. There are small restaurant stalls on the top floor of one of the buildings that serve local food for very cheap and it's quite good. I'd recommend La Abuela. The caldo de pollo was delicious.
NomadShabs — Google review
A place where you can buy a variety of goods in quite a few stores and stalls. It is something for someone who is looking for bargains. The atmosphere is friendly and extremely popular, you should definitely test the food that is prepared at individual tables by a wide variety of women. This is pure Latin America.
Gingerfilm L — Google review
head to Mercado Cuatro (officially called Mercado Municipal 4) for a hot bowl of pira caldo, a traditional Paraguayan fish soup full of veggies and Paraguayan cheese. Browse the stalls to pick up souvenirs, like a guampo (a cup shaped like a horn) and a bombilla (metal filtered straw), for drinking tereré, a local yerba maté-infused tea.
Sonoo T — Google review
I love it here. So atmospheric and much less hassle than other such markets across the world. There are different areas for different products and it becomes pretty easy to navigate on your third or fourth trip. Definitely check out the municipal canteen which is very different to anywhere I’ve been before.

The National Pantheon of Heroes, built in 1936, is a revered mausoleum housing the remains of Paraguayan leaders such as Don Carlos Antonio Lopez and Marshal Jose Felix Estigarribia. The architecture is reminiscent of Paris' Les Invalides, featuring a grand dome and stained glass windows. Visitors can witness the changing of the guard and explore commemorative plaques from various sources. Located in the historic center, it offers guided tours through the tourist office.
Fantastic building architecturally and spiritually. We visited on Sunday morning when a Catholic Mass was wrapping up. Very nice. Here the heroes of Paraguay from the mid 1800’s to about 1940’s are honored and in most cases interred. Presidents, Generals, a symbolic war hero is featured, one artist (musician and poet), and some statues to Catholic clergy e.g. bishops. It’s a beautiful building, to us one of the best places to visit in Paraguay as one gets some history and the vibe and spirit of Paraguay’s independence and importance as a country. It’s free, don’t miss this place. Includes the tomb of the first President of the Republic who was the gentleman behind the famous term “Paraguay soup” as a name for bread, something I shall never forget. Well done!

A beautiful building in the city center. The history of Paraguay is here. It's small but it is a must visit if you are in the old city center. Around the pantheon there are shops and cafes if you want to chill after visiting it.

Free entrance. We took 10 minutes to see inside and three hours sitting in across the street at National Bar drinking beer, relaxing and contemplating the architecture of the building.
Alexander F — Google review
In the heart of downtown Asunción stands the National Pantheon of the Heroes, one of Paraguay’s most important landmarks. Originally designed in the 1860s by Italian architect Alessandro Ravizza, construction was interrupted by the War of the Triple Alliance and only completed decades later, inaugurated in 1936. The neoclassical façade with its dome and columns gives it a solemn, elegant presence on Plaza de los Héroes. Inside rest the remains of Paraguay’s most revered figures, including Marshal Francisco Solano López, other national leaders, and unknown soldiers. It serves both as a mausoleum and a symbol of remembrance. A highlight for visitors is the changing of the guard ceremony, performed by the Honor Guard. It’s dignified and formal — though not as elaborate as the spectacles at Buckingham Palace or similar sites — it adds a sense of living tradition to the memorial. Notes The site is compact — 20–30 minutes is enough to take it in. The guard change usually happens every couple of hours, we were lucky to get but not sure of the exact schedule Great photo opportunities: the white dome, flag against the sky, stained glass, and the guards at attention all make striking images. It is good to the stop here with a walk to the nearby Metropolitan Cathedral, Plaza Uruguaya, or nearby historic streets.

The Museo de las Memorias Dictadura y Derechos Humanos is a place that carries the weight of Paraguay's painful and violent history. It offers free admission and provides an emotional experience, evoking feelings of powerlessness, sorrow, and more. This museum serves as a reminder of the atrocities endured by our fellow countrymen during one of the most brutal periods in our nation's past.
Interesting former interrogation site from the most recent dictatorship era. Exhibits describe the secret police, use of integration sites and detention centers, and a bit about the opposition in exile. There are some recreated integration cells at the end. Spanish only. Free.

Very interesting museum about the dictatorship and it's human rights' abuses, including archive photos and documents, torture equipment, information about those tortured, killed and "disappeared", in a house where political prisoners were imprisoned and tortured. You can see the cells. The museum is free to enter and is open even on a Monday when others in Asuncion are closed. I was asked to show ID on arrival, a copy of my passport sufficed. All the written information is in Spanish only. Has toilets. On a Monday morning between 9 and 10am, I was the only visitor.
Lyndsey — Google review
Very well-done and emotionally moving exhibits. All information is only available in Spanish. Exhibit info comprehensively shares the story of the repression and punishment during the dictatorship. As a foreigner, I learned a lot and am grateful for the moving experience of my visit and all that I learned. This is by far the best museum I visited in Asunción. Reading all the info available, my visit lasted about 1 hour. Highly recommended!!

An informative and eye-opening museum. The entrance is to the right of the building, where the old red police car is parked. The museum is free, but I left a donation, as this is an important place. This is a sad part of history that everyone should learn and hope is never repeated.

We called and emailed the museum to confirm the schedule. No response. We went there during working hours and it was closed. It’s a shame because we really wanted to learn more about the crimes against humanity committed during the dictatorship. Paraguay lacks tourism infrastructure. Assuncion has very little to offer when compared with other places in Latin America and no willingness to showcase its culture.

Nestled in the heart of Asuncion, the Costanera de Asuncion is a captivating waterfront promenade that runs alongside the Paraguay River. Despite being landlocked, Paraguay boasts its own beach at Playa de la Costanera, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and leisure activities. Visitors can indulge in delightful Asian fusion cuisine at the vibrant on-site restaurant or take a leisurely stroll along this picturesque walkway.
Great place to cool down a bit, the beach is nice with a great atmosphere early evening's on the weekends, try the churros👍lots police to keep everything safe but, once the crowds have left i wouldn't stay around as it can de a bit dangerous later on, liked it very much, a must do thing in Asuncion.

Presume this places is livelier on the weekend and evening, otherwise not a place you need to bother visiting. The “beach” is not a beach and there are no amenities to speak of. The costanera in Encarnación is 100 times better!

We were there for the Independence day celebration International food festival. At least 10 countries represented had food and information about each country. Excellent food. Also each country did a presentation of dancing, music, singing. So much fun!

Great for jogging, running or just riding a bicycle. Nice views of the bay and Palacio de los Lopez. Lots of vendors offering water, sodas, ice and our traditional drink terere. There's parking in both ways of the street and police control.

Perfect, but could be cleaner, there is a lot of trash in the canals and the bay, it stinks. We feel pity for flora and fauna there, there's not even a hint of a national park, the locals have polluted everything.

Very cool little museum about the city of Asunción. Highlight is the many early maps of the Rio de la Plata region and South America. It's located inside a cultural center, access is from Juan de Ayolas street. The walls are adorned with proverbs and quotations, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Since its opening in 1985, Taberna Española has gained popularity, especially for its annual giant paella event that feeds 800 people during a charity project.
If you are looking for a a cultural food experience in Asuncion, this is a must try. The service is top notch and the food is delicious. Just ring the cow bell above the table to call your waiter. Take in the ambiance and history of the place as you wait for the food. There is very little English spoken here and the menus are in Spanish. I suggest trying some of the appetizers. They are really good and you can get combinations of tasty food to get an idea of what you may want for your main course. They also have a variety of delicious desserts. This is a great find a little off the beaten path.
Brian J — Google review
We enjoyed our lunch here. We walked the very short walk from the center of town, the neighborhood is not beautiful but okay and felt safe enough during the day. We had a jug of nice basic Sangria, good bread, refreshing non-spicy gazpacho, and the Gran Paella which looked great (see photos) and was pretty good. We have very high expectations for food and while we enjoyed the paella, must say I’ve had much better, more tasty and more flavorful paella in other countries. To be fair, Asuncion is far from the sea so I suspect the seafood was right out of the sea in other places, being so far from the sea I should say the paella here was pretty good given that. The service was okay here, we did have a snafu when the check came, there was a charge for extra prawns (shrimp) in the paella, which we did not request, however the waiter was speaking a bunch of Spanish rapidly and maybe he thought we were agreeing to extra shrimp ??? He rapidly and without hesitation struck the extra shrimp from the bill with a smile, by the way the quantity of shrimp we got in the “Gran” paella looked normal to us for something labelled “Gran” but apparently one only gets a couple shrimp if you don’t order extra? That made us feel a little weird as we don’t really know if they hope people won’t check their bill for extras or whether we nodded our head to something by accident, unclear. Anyways the waiter was nice about it. The decor here is super fun, loved the “free no-WiFi zone” sign and the bell you ring to call the waiter (see video). Glad we experienced this place, it’s almost 5 star but not quite in our view.

Food is usually outstanding (some days the quality is lower thus "usually"). Though going in a couple is not bad, going in grups is significantly better and cheaper; the attention also improves for groups mainly because the waiters become friendlier. OVERPRICED DUMP. NOT a cocktail bar by any means. The place looks bad, everything is worn out, old poorly painted chairs. Cocktails? Apart from waiting almost 20 mins for 2 drinks, despite the place being almost empty, calling these drinks cocktails is a far fetched overstatement. Mixing some fruit juice with some garbage alcohol in a water glass. Good thing we didn't get food too. The kitchen looks extremely dirty. Not coming here again, and I reccomend to be avoided. I had to come because I heard this is one of the best restaurants in Asuncion if not Paraguay. Arrived a little earlier than expected the restaurant was still preparing and I waited outside a while before was showed to a table. I didn't really know what to order though the ceviche caught my attention and the staff recommended me to order the beef. I did listen to the recommendation and I ordered and I have to say the meal was really very enjoyable. The food was really good and delicious and I was over greedy as the portion of the ceviche and the beef was quite big. It was a very full dinner. Also ordered a drink but I couldn't finish it as I thought the alcohol level was a little too strong for a cocktail. Nevertheless it was good. Totally had no space for dessert though I wanted to. Definitely a highly recommended place to visit in Asuncion. Also wanted to mention that the staff were friendly and attentive.

Delicious! It was very good, service very good. First place I ate in the city, but I will come back. I think it’s more like a 4.6 instead of the 4.4 it has at the time of my writing this review. The risotto was excellent, but the other thing that looks like a giant scotch egg was delicious (apologies, don’t know the name)

Hidden gem in Asuncion. Modern and surprising architecture with a nice garden flair. Small menu, but just about right for everyone to find something. The food is just melting on the tongue. Staff is super friendly.

Food was good. My wife absolutely loved hers. The value for money was maybe not quite there. They also expect a 10% tip on top of everything, despite having pretty expensive food for Paraguay.

Tasty and delicious food. Wine selection could be better but the offer is good. The place is innovative and the mixture of an industrial style the luxurious of Paraguay’s flora make the plus factor. Service is attentive and the space is ideal por a relaxed dinner.

We saw online the recommendations for this restaurant and we wanted to come visit. We shared the appetizers which were delicious. Tried some of the specials too. The waitstaff is excellent.

Dined with the family. I ordered the House Cheesburger, my sister a bowl of noodles, my mother a Risotto and my Stepdad a Steak Eye. It took over an hour. My Cheesburger was phenomenal, amazing. Bread is made in the house, the meat was amazingly cooked and it was filled to the top with it’s extra ingredients. Sadly, only me and my sister enjoyed our food. My stepfather had to give back his plate because it was overcooked and my mom ended up eating part of my Hamburger because the Risotto wasn’t as good and didn’t fill her up. I’d recommend the Cheesburger, but I would just choose just somewhere else to eat if it’s to eat a Hamburger, and even more one that is not as expensive.

Art Museums
The Museum of Sacred Art in Asuncion is a must-visit attraction that offers a glimpse into the rich religious art heritage of Paraguay. Housed in a picturesque country villa with Italian architecture, this museum showcases an extraordinary collection of woodcarvings and sculptures created by Guarani artists, reflecting various faiths.
Absolutely worth a visit, there are four rooms full of statues mostly made out of wood, but are very intriguing. They were left from the Spanish occupation of Paraguay more than 250 years ago. I was the only one in the museum. It was a small entry fee and it is absolutely worth going to see here are a few photos below
John K — Google review
Quite a small museum with sacred art created during the colonial period, which means that there are a lot of Christian religious depictions. They are all quite beautiful with signage all in Spanish. The curator is quite friendly and provided a good 15-minute description about the history of the Guarani people and the significance of the museum. It's housed in a beautiful building with lots of steps to reach the top.
James — Google review
Small but poignant museum with excellent descriptions of the artifacts (in Spanish only). Excellent view into the cultural mix of the Guaraní and Spanish colonists. The gentleman at the reception, who also gave us an introduction to the museum and its contents, was wonderful.

We loved this small museum of sacred art. The guide was fantastic. He went over the story behind the museum and give us the story about the art. My husband and I absolutely enjoyed it.
Ramsina D — Google review
One of the best museums in Asunción. Sacred art is the biggest artistic treasure Paraguay produced during its colonial period. Housed in a beautifully restored italian style villa in a quiet downtown corner. The Museo de Arte sacro exhibits remarkable pieces of art, mostly made by the Guaraní indigenous in the Jesuit Reductions that flourished in the XVII century.

Café Consulado is a trendy and hipster meeting spot in the city, known for serving top-notch coffee. The baristas are known for their unique style, and they offer a variety of coffee options including cold brew and personalized infusions. In addition to their renowned coffee, the café also serves delectable treats like carrot cake and red velvet, as well as popular favorites such as muffins and cookies. The space often features rotating art exhibitions, adding to its eclectic atmosphere.
Great place! Super cozy with books and games if you choose to meet up or pass time. They also have some beautiful art pieces on display and to purchase. Started with white-flat and it was delicious! The food is fresh with vegetarian and vegan options! Above all, the staff is super kind, friendly and attentive. Highly recommend!

This cool cafe has some good vegan options on their menu. We tried the veggie bagel, which was pretty good. The bagel was not the best, as finding good bagels is hard. We also tried the Fun Guy sandwich which was a mushroom sandwich! It was delicious and full of flavor! The coffee and cappuccino with plant milk were both great. I wasn’t a huge fan of the small side of chips, could be better there. Overall it was a good experience and nice vegan option! I’ll definitely go back to try the seitan sandwich soon! :)

This is a wonderful coffee shop. They use Totem coffee with limited options with variety of beans. Sticking to the blended expresso for the basic. They make a very good flat white styled drink that is perfect but with too thick of firm foam (good body still). A chill place. The prices are in the proper band.

Such a lovely place. I appreciated they have a good selection of coffees: - Fltrados - Espresso estilo I went there to enjoy a coffee, but I will definitively go back as it seems they have nice food as well. Great atmosphere, cozy place. Get the hype without you feel over-hyped. Definitively one of the best place I have been so far in Asunción

Café Consulado is a great island of peace and culture in the middle of the concrete jungle of the Capital, Asuncion. They offer a wide variety of products, including healthy meals, arts, crafts and an extensive catalogue of coffees. Personally, I have tried the gravlax, the mbeju, the coffees, the vegan cookie, the Fichas de Mandioca... and all of them have been excellent! If you need a break from the hectic pace of downtown, a different place to work, or a good cup of coffee, Consulado is the place.

The Andrés Barbero Ethnographic Museum, situated in Asuncion, Paraguay, is a cultural treasure trove founded by Dr. Andres Barbero and inaugurated in 1933. Housed in the Museum Dr. Andres Barbero building since 1956, it offers a rich display of traditional Paraguayan culture through well-preserved indigenous artifacts and antique items from across the country.
Wonderful collection of indigenous artifacts! I was blown away by the breadth of the collection, all very well organized (though very poorly explained). There's everything from spears to bags to burial pots. I spent probably an hour just pouring over everything. Probably the biggest collection of indigenous ethnographic artifacts (not archaeological) I've seen anywhere in LATAM. Strangely, no photos are allowed and a staff member followed me around the museum to personally watch me the whole time. They also devoted about 1/3 of museum galleries to chronicling the lives of key museum staff, very strange. Free. Just yell at the entrance and someone will come to unlock it for you. This would be a great museum to hire a guide to show you around.
Josiah W — Google review
A great museum where you can learn about the indigenous peoples of Paraguay and see items dated back 1500 years and of the previous century. A huge collection of domestic artifacts as well. The museum employee, Ariel, was very helpful and kind to share some interesting facts about those items. Definitely recommend! Free entrance.

(Translated by Google) A nice little museum where you can learn a lot about the way of life of the Guarani indigenous people and also about those from the Chaco. There are urns, weapons for hunting, children's toys, headdresses and robes as well as various everyday items. There is also a comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the Slovenian researcher Branislava Susnik and her research expeditions. (Translated by Google) A mixed experience visiting this museum, whose entrance is so discreet on this rather bumpy stretch of Avenida España that you could easily walk past it without realizing it. You have to ring the bell and wait until someone opens the gate at the top of the stairs, which remains padlocked, no doubt as a precaution given the dilapidated state of the immediate surroundings. The chronological section detailing the research, excavations, and other elements of Branka Susnic's impressive career is interesting, well-documented, and very comprehensive. The exhibition rooms, however, are poorly lit and unfortunately do not adequately showcase the objects on display. The explanatory vignettes, when they exist, are too basic to constitute an interesting source of information, and their placement is often strange. The museum, however, is appreciated for its free admission. Donations are welcome.

General Pablo Rojas Stadium, also known as La Olla, is the home ground of Paraguay's renowned soccer team, Club Cerro Porteno. With an impressive track record in Copa Libertadores and Primera Division titles, the stadium attracts passionate fans who create a vibrant atmosphere with thundering chants and high-energy commentary. The venue can accommodate up to 45,000 spectators but sometimes allows for more. The well-preserved grass adds to the allure of this top-notch facility.
We attended an international convention with over 26,000 in attendance and it was peaceful and beautiful.

(2023-02-28) I was there for a Conmebol Copa Libertadores game. Cerro Porteño against a club from Chile. The match was super interesting and the Paraguayan team won. However, the area of the stadium is not charming and welcoming. For gringos, it can be somewhat dangerous if you are alone or you do not have someone speaking Spanish with you. Have your IDs and a bit of cash with you. EDIT: I have been a second time against Palmeiras in a VIP section. The entrance is safer but the area around the stadium is still not good. My rating remain.

This stadium is in excellent conditions, the seats are for 45,000 persons at full capacity, but sometimes they allow 48,000 persons including the people that are stand up. The grass seems very well preserved. Is the house of CP CERRO PORTENO. A club with a great tradition in Asuncion Paraguay.

Karu is a charming cafe located in the trendy Las Mercedes neighborhood, featuring a verdant patio where visitors can enjoy breakfast, snacks, or light lunches. The menu offers typical Paraguayan dishes with a gastronomic twist, such as the flavorful payagua mascada made with meat or a vegan version incorporating beans and mushrooms. The cafe's specialty sourdough breads are highly sought after, often requiring advance reservations on weekends.
Lovely and delicious independent cafe, bakery, confectionery (they make the best Panettone in the whole Paraguay) and lunch restaurant. The atmosphere and decor are as welcoming and friendly as the staff and upon entering you are greeted by the wonderful smell of freshly baked bread and croissants. The business lunch offer is solid, at an honest prices, with a small menu of nicely prepared dishes. There is ample opportunity to take home all of the store made preparations, from sandwiches, to pizza to bakers' confections (like cakes and pastries) and there are also some sauces (from pesto to hummus) in the fridge, along with cold drinks, yogurts and beers. It is a lovely and tranquil place on a small streets with virtually no traffic, but just a few blocks away from the busy business hearth of Asuncion. Recommended!

Not too many vegan options, but the ones they had were absolutely delicious. Plant based milk for coffee & the best vegan burger I've had in Paraguay so far! The bread makes all the difference and the veggie patty seems like it was made of Yuka, soft on the inside, but crunchy on the outside. Muy bueno 💚

This was a beautiful little cafe set a few blocks off Santa Teresa. Easy to find & just so cute. The pop of green & decor was one thing but the breads were amazing! This review was written in February 2025, OOOOOMMMGGGG, good food & great pastry selection. My beautiful wife found Karu while looking for a bread & coffee shop in Asunción. As visitors from a foreign country we like to try the local coffee & pastry shops. During our two months in Asunción, PY, we have tried and tested a few coffee & bread shops, but they were nothing to write home about. Our visit to Karu changed all that. This restaurant offers a food selection that was fairly decent. Over the years I have tasted hundreds, maybe even thousands of breads and pastries, but Karu has some of the best bakery breads and pastries I have tasted. The glass display counter excels in displaying their delicious selection of bakery goods. You can't go wrong n trying any of their bread or pastry items. If you live in Asunción or plan to visit Karu bakery & coffee shop. You will not be disappointed. We highly recommend a visit to KARU.

Really nice park that’s safe to walk and run in as a woman by yourself. Lots of security available. But please update your bathrooms! They’re always filthy, never have toilet paper, and aren’t accessible with a stroller, which causes it to be very difficult to take my 3 young kids to the bathroom when my oldest needs to go.

Thank GOD for this place! Paraguay is already landlocked but a wide open park is what you need to escape sometimes. You 'will' need a car to get there though. Has a few workout pieces & cheap bicycles to rent (Bring your ID!) if you like but most people just go there to walk it's length then go. It could benefit from a garden & a .ore ambitious play area for kids.

Best park to run at in Asunción! It’s a nice flat 5km loop with markings every 100m so you know how you’re tracking. The bike park next door also allows you to rent bikes for free! You just need to leave some ID. Only issue is that it can get crowded after work or on weekends, so recommend going early in the AM.

A wonderful patch of natural peace within walking distance of Asuncion's new City central districts. ⸻ An Ideal Place for Walking and Running This park is a perfect escape for anyone looking to walk or run in a peaceful environment. Entry requires either a physical ID or a photo of it. Since it’s reserved exclusively for pedestrians, you don’t have to worry about cyclists. Many thanks to those who maintain and care for this wonderful place.

I visited Parque de la Salud during my stay in Asunción and was truly impressed. The park is located in a calm, secure, and beautiful district — the perfect setting to relax and reconnect with nature. Entry is free, and you simply register when you enter and again when you leave, which adds a sense of safety and organization. There are clean restrooms for men and women right at the entrance. Inside, the park is beautifully maintained — green, peaceful, and full of life. You’ll find many small paths winding through the trees, offering different routes each time you visit. Hidden benches and quiet corners invite you to sit down, reflect, or just listen to the many birds around you. A lovely surprise is the small open library, where you can borrow a book and read surrounded by nature — a perfect detail for those who like to disconnect and slow down. Everywhere you look, there are colorful butterflies, birds, and insects, giving the park a vibrant, living atmosphere. One small tip: if you’re sensitive to mosquito bites, it’s good to come prepared, as there can be some around — especially in shaded or humid areas. Overall, Parque de la Salud is a real gem in Asunción: peaceful, safe, and beautifully cared for. I can highly recommend it and will definitely return to stroll around and find some peace again.

Bar Casa Clari offers a charming atmosphere with a great view of the presidential palace, especially at night. While reservations are recommended for patio seating, the interior also provides a good view of the palace. The service may seem a bit disorganized and prioritizes outdoor customers, but the staff is friendly and serves delicious caipirinhas. It's an ideal spot to enjoy dinner with friends on a Saturday night while taking in the stunning views of the palace.
Excellent food! Was blown away by the great flavours. Amazing views. Make a reservation beforehand. Staff were fine. Would recommend!
Nicole V — Google review
I waited an hour to be served some chicken fingers, a simple fried dish. They were just okay. The flavor and presentation were fine, but definitely not worth the price. The place was full of flies, which was really unpleasant, and later mosquitoes started biting, so bring repellent if you go. Honestly, I’d only recommend this spot if you want a photo on the terrace. Even a basic drink took 30 minutes to arrive. The staff was rude. They got our order wrong and blamed us for it. We had a reservation for 4:30 PM, arrived on time, and were told we should’ve come at 4. They had given our table to someone else and said those people didn’t want to move. They placed us at a different table, then later moved us to the one we had actually reserved. Also, they don’t accept cards or have a POS, only cash or bank transfers, which is very inconvenient. They expect you to show up 30 minutes before your reservation and still make you wait an hour for a basic dish.
Alex J — Google review
I can’t tell you about the food really, ordered very basic food but the mbeju and mate cocido con leche. It was good but I can’t rate the food. No complaints when it comes to food and drink. It is a bit by Paraguayan standards but you’re paying for a view which IS WORTH IT. But before I go to that part…. THEY ONLY TAKE CASH. Now the view, it’s amazing. That’s why you come here, there’s other places for food and coffee, but one place for the view of this palace. Had no issues with staff, they were nice and gave me the WiFi password when asked. So they have WiFi, views, the staff was good. No complaints. You may have birds join you for food but they’re harmless. I went on a random Tuesday and it was easy to get in. So I recommend you at least get coffee here and enjoy the views

Lovely café and restaurant inside the Manzana de la Rivera cultural center. Everything's good: from coffee drinks, to sweets to meal courses and desserts, but the highlight of the place is absolutely the terrace from which you get an unparalleled and unobstructed view of the Presidential Palace just across the street. To make sure you can enjoy your evening on the terrace it is best to reserve as this is a very popular place. Service is kind, professional and fast, prices very honest, especially considering the location. Nothing, really, to complain about and a highly recommended place for a uniquely Paraguayan experience in front of the most important palace of the whole country.

Though I did not try the food, the bartender and waitress were both very friendly, and fixed a good caipirinha. What makes the place, of course, is the wonderful views of the presidential palace from the terrace. Cute cats too!
Dr K — Google review
Before you want to eat outside on the patio, you need to make a reservation. We ate inside however. Inside across of the bar, there is still a very good view of the presidential palace which is nicely lit up during the night time. The waiters take their time with serving you. They looked a bit unorganised and seem to prioritise the costumers outside. Our waitress also seemed a bit surprised when we asked for the bill not long after we finished our food. The food however, gnocchi and fettuccine, were very delicious. Definitely some of the better food I ate here in Asuncion. The flavours are on point and the portion size is well balanced with the price we paid for our food. Sitting inside, the music can be a bit loud, but all in all we had a very good experience in Casa Clari.

The Terminal de Omnibus in Asuncion is the main hub for purchasing tickets to travel within Paraguay or to neighboring countries like Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil. When buying tickets, travelers can choose between 'comun' for multiple stops or 'rapido' for a faster journey with fewer stops. It's advisable to research your journey beforehand as finding departure points can be confusing.
A bit run down, but very easy to navigate. Lots of shopping opportunities fir souvenirs and such, small waiting area, but most importantly guidance to the correct bus quickly was so helpful.
Debbie F — Google review
Easy bus terminal. Looked for, and found easily a ticket to Cuidad del Este, on my way to Iguazu falls.
M B — Google review
To use the city buses you need a Jaha card (prepaid travel card which holds credit. Available from places showing aquí pago or pago express). Journeys roughly 2000-3500 each. Can share a card for multiple trips on same bus
Rachel H — Google review
Basically this is the only bus terminal in the City, so there's no way they compete for improving it. The other bus terminals in Paraguay are worse, so I stay with 2 instead of 1 star here, since we talk Capital City of Paraguay. LOL 🚻The Toilets are unhygienic, unless you use NSA VIP access. 🌭The food places and stores are very much camping Kiosk style and you might believe this is a temporary emergency Terminal hall... no it's not. This is the 'standard' they give you. 🚫There is NO air conditioning! You got ventilators and a roof though. 🛂You can buy your ticket directly in the bus agency Offices locally present, opening times depend. Phone lines are eventually available and some like NSA offer Android app purchase. Passport or Cédula are required most trips. 🚕🚖Taxis are present outside, but the typical dirty ones. Recommending MUV app for clean private transports like 'Über'. Summing up: Bus travel is comfortable and cheap for like 90.000Gs 6h trips. The quality of Buses varies a bit, but is very high compared to economy airplane seats.
Marcus K — Google review
There is a guardamaletas (luggage storage) on NE end of the terminal, to your right entering the terminal from the buses. They are open until midnight and charge 10,000 Guaranis per bag per day. Buses on the Ave. Argentina side, the stop is to your right.

A very cozy hotel in the middle of the city, yet isolated from the dust and noise, almost like an island. The breakfast was plentiful and the room was big. The cook is good, if you also take your dinner here. I'll probably be back.

Strategically located minutes from the airport, in a very safe area of Asunción, across the street from a 24 hour Super Seis market and restaurants, sits this rare elegant, five star accommodations at a fair price, with swimming pool and a breakfast to die for! Comfortable rooms with high quality mattresses, linens and comfortable seating outside the door with a view of the tropical style swimming pool and poolside dining area. We were impressed by the value and Superior customer service by the management and front desk team. The room was equipped with just about everything you could imagine including remote controls for the air conditioner, cable TV and the high speed internet work just fine. Highly recommended. You won't be disappointed. I put PT on the list of my top destinations while visiting Paraguay and this part of South America. Uber or taxi from the airport to the hotel only costs about US$3.

What a cute little hotel! Though not within walking distance to much cabs and Uber are readily available. It's a little oasis in the middle of the city. It's not a fancy hotel like a Sheraton but it's quaint with a wonderful old world charm. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable and reasonably priced. The staff have been gracious and are so helpful. My husband found this little gem last year as he was ready to come home to Canada. He was so happy to have been "stuck" here during the Covid-19 shutdown and couldn't wait to come back and bring me along. We will definitely be coming back again and again. 🤩

(Translated by Google) A brief history. The fascist sculptor, beloved by Francisco Franco and a participant in the Valley of the Fallen in Spain, built a syncretic monument for the dictator Stroessner during his lifetime, linking Stroessner, the Virgin of Caacupé, and Carlos Antonio López, decapitating himself on the summit of Lambaré Hill. In 1991, in a spirit of democratic fervor, the city of Asunción removed the dictator's statue. Facing the risk of its loss as an object of worship, the artist Carlos Colombino created an "anti-monument" with such powerful elements that it prevented the reconstruction of the statue and the symbol of hatred, pain, and death that today represents everything related to his conceptually pure fascist regime. Memorial activities are held in this plaza, reflecting the barbarity of the Stroessner dictatorship from 1954 to 1989. And every August 30th, tributes are held to the disappeared on the INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE DISAPPEARED, a designation proposed by Fedefam and instituted by the UN in 2010. The name of the plaza was established as an act of remembrance and a formal commitment to non-repetition by the municipality and the Paraguayan state, in accordance with the national constitution and the international pacts that the Paraguayan state has signed with the community of nations, in accordance with the international system for the protection of human rights. The Plaza de los Desaparecidos, in the city of Asunción, was named by municipal ordinance in 1994 and strengthened by national law since 2003. It is a "Memorial Space" where various memorial activities are held in honor of the more than 450 disappeared detainees from the dictatorial period of 1954-1989. The memorial space is highly visited and is a national and international landmark. (Original) La historia breve. (Translated by Google) A bar with an excellent selection of music. On the day I went, DJ Il Ragazzo was playing, with vintage Italian, French, Spanish, Latin and American rock and new wave selections. The food menu is expensive and a bit simplistic. There are vegetarian options, but it's really worth eating somewhere else before going. The drinks menu is also expensive, but a bit more varied. There's only one type of beer, Estrela Galicia (with or without gluten), but the rather high price (18 thousand for a long neck) doesn't allow for many to last the night. The space is beautiful and the clientele is quite mixed, which gives a special flavor to the night. In short: it's worth a visit for the space, the music, the people, and to try some good drinks. However, if you want to eat or be happy with beer, it's not the best place. Rating 8. Nota 8.
