The Chamberson is a centrally located hotel in Dunedin, housed in a heritage-listed former warehouse that has been beautifully renovated to offer contemporary accommodation while preserving its original features. The hotel's spacious rooms provide excellent views of the city through large windows. With its cool and stylish design, including exposed red-brick walls and elegant furnishings, The Chamberson offers a comfortable getaway in the heart of the city.
My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Chamberson, our room felt very cosy and relaxing, for a reasonable price too. The location couldn’t be better, being right in the centre of town. The British lady on reception (didn’t catch her name) was extremely accommodating and friendly, who also gave us some great recommendations for things to do in the area. Would highly recommend this hotel!

Really nice little boutique hotel. I had a loft room, which is only suitable for a single traveler, but the bed was great. Huge shower with awesome pressure and heated bathroom floor. My one and only little nitpick is the pillows. They were all hard and the same type, where I sleep with a down pillow at home, so it would have been nice to have a soft pillow, but otherwise it was great and I would stay there again. Very convenient location.
Sabine S — Google review
Stayed at the Chamberson for a long weekend and wow. What a beautiful hotel! Felt like I was staying in an upscale New York loft. The rooms were beautifully clean, quiet, cosy and warm and with all the amenities you need for your stay. The staff were wonderful and very helpful especially with information on the local area. Great location with lots to do in walking distance. Highly recommend, I’ll definitely be back.
Leila G — Google review
We just had one night here. It is 5 minutes walk from the railway station where our train came in. Our room was very spacious with good light. The kitchen would have been useful for cooking but we did not use it. We left our bags here in the morning and explored local museums and the city by foot. A great place to stay and see Dunedin.
Brian E — Google review
What a lovely lovely Boutique Hotel. From the lovely receptionist(English) to the beautiful studio we could not have asked for better. So tastefully decorated and so very comfortable. Right in the heart of the city so perfect position to enjoy Dunedins restaurants. This will be where we stay whenever we are back in Dunedin.
Erin G — Google review
Was a really lovely stay- the 2 bed unit suited us perfectly. Was very clean and modern and had all the necessities. Walking distance to all in the centre. Blockour curtains made it so cosy, some would say too cower even. The parking was tight but they were very open and honest about this when booking. The only downfall was that the floors did creak in some spots. I would recommend.
Katrina — Google review
Wonderful find located so close to the city centre yet still quiet enough to enjoy your stay. The room had very heavy curtains which left the room not only snug but assisted with keeping the noise from the busy street outside at bay. Stylishly decorated with beds that were so comfortable I had the best nights sleep of my holiday here. The facilities are more than sufficient to self cater if you wanted to but it is within walking distance of so many of Dunedins dining options. Our only regret is that we didn’t get to stay here on when we arrived for our holiday. Although we may not have left town if we had. We were also given a complementary upgrade which was greatly appreciated and apparently not an unusual occurrence. This will definitely be our first choice for accommodation next time we return to Dunedin and I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone wanting classy accommodation in a central location.
David H — Google review
We originally booked two 1 bed studios, however the day of the booking we recieved a phonecard offering us an apartment that was available instead, which we suited better as we were two couples travelling together. The apartment was clean and the beds very comfortable. They supply basics such as shampoo, conditioner and body wash as well as tea, coffee and milk. The staff over the phone and when receiving our key cards were professional and kind. The location is perfect with free parking out front from 6pm - 9am and then metered car parking after that. We would definitely stay again!

The Fable Dunedin is a luxurious hotel situated in the heart of Dunedin, offering a range of accommodation options including classic, superior, and luxury rooms as well as spacious junior suites. The hotel has been an elegant landmark since 1862 and is known for its stylish modern interior within a traditional exterior. It also serves as an ideal venue for gala dinners and events with scrumptious catering choices and ample audiovisual equipment.
Loved it here! Great fancy and clean hotel. The valet service is great. We weren't able to eat at the restaurant, they seem to always be booked out for ages and only have like 8 tables so they book out fast. But yes very happy with the hotel, I give it 5 stars. We will be back for sure! We liked sitting in the library downstairs and the hotel was quite central to town
Timothy C — Google review
The hotel itself is lovely, and the staff were great, but our king deluxe room was quite small, with a very small bathroom. There was quite a lot of street noise that we could hear from the 6th floor. We understand this is not something you can control, but perhaps with thicker or double glazed windows some of the street noise could have been blocked. The bed was comfy but the temperature of the shower was up and down and hard to control. We expected a bit more for what the room cost. As far as the restaurant and staff, we could fault neither. Everyone we came across was very helpful and the food from the restaurant was outstanding, as were the cocktails. Dinner and breakfast service were both excellent. Thank you to the wonderful team for making us feel so welcome.
Jill M — Google review
Just stayed two nights in this beautifully renovated hotel. The room had central thermostat, dimmer lights, super comfortable king bed, luxurious rain shower, Nespresso coffee machine etc. Moreover, the staff was superb, especially Mohammed who went out of his way on a couple of special requests. The hotel is just a few blocks from the Octagon, train station, settlers museum etc. If you are staying on a weekday, make sure you book parking.
Richard T — Google review
Lovely hotel in central Dunedin area. Rooms are very comfortable and clean, and the customer service is excellent. Particularly Chloe, Charlotte and Lorenzo did an amazing job in the few days I stayed here, consistently going the extra mile to make my experience perfect.
Anna C — Google review
Fantastic venue and hotel. We recently hosted a business event and stayed the night and the service we received was exemplary. Charlotte in particular was excellent and we would love to stay and use the Fable again in the future.
Erin H — Google review
This is one of the worst stays I have had in a long time. I was put into a disabled room so once you had a shower the floor was covered in water. The air conditioning sounded like 747 jet so I turned it off. Once off, the room was cold despite putting extra blankets on the bed. Plus there was an off smell in the room like they had overdosed it with room deodoriser. Even in the restaurant when I ordered the classic South Island cheese rolls they had none left (8 o'clock at night and didn't offer to make more) I don't know how they ever got rated 5 stars. I see the owners response I shared my thoughts with front desk and they apologized and did nothing. No make good. Poor way to deal with an unhappy customer. I certainly won't be booking there again.
J M — Google review
"Absolutely loved our stay at Fable Hotel Dunedin! The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, the rooms were very cosy and comfortable, and the location was perfect for exploring the city. Highly recommend the restaurant and bar - the food and drinks were top-notch! Can't wait to come back!" 5/5 stars

Awesome place and service with professionalism. We don't normally stay in hotels like this but a very nice change. Being in the centre of town, just a tad noisy, which we are not used to, living in the country. You have to eat at The Press restaurant when there. Great food and service.

Nestled along the stunning Esplanade Parade, Hotel Saint Clair offers a refreshing escape with its breezy studios and suites that boast breathtaking ocean views. This contemporary boutique hotel is a delightful blend of modern comfort and historical charm, having transformed from the iconic Wains Hotel. With 26 self-contained accommodations, guests can indulge in luxurious amenities like deep-sunk spa baths and spacious balconies perfect for sipping local Otago wine while soaking in the coastal scenery.
We had our last night in Dunedin New Zealand. We had an ocean view. The room was clean, warm and inviting with a gorgeous few nice sectional couch. As you can see in the videos and pictures, the hospitality of New Zealand people are amazing. All resorts come with toaster hot water maker, tea coffee, a refrigerator, real creamer milk. They literally give you a bottle of milk. Will you also enjoyed the convenience of the location? They have a saltwater pole which we didn't use but a lot of people said it was amazing. It was heated and they give you free vouchers for that. The parking is underground. It's so easily and conveniently located right by the beach. Lots of restaurants We would definitely recommend anyone traveling here. We spent $200 us per night. Well worth it. Our last night of relaxation. Nice dinner out and beautiful views.
Agnes B — Google review
Very nice hotel especially if you have a room viewing the ocean. The one I stayed in had a bathtub with hot tub functions, and a heated tile floor for added luxury. Great place to rest for me as I was touring the island by motorbike and had to stay an extra night to due to bad weather. There isn’t a whole lot going on in the area other than the pizza restaurant and burger bar, the local grocery store closes before 7pm. But if you want a quiet place to relax by the ocean, this is a great spot. Complimentary parking in their underground garage is a great amenity for your vehicle as well.
Kevin T — Google review
Rooms are fresh and modern and some have incredible views of the beach+/ocean. The location is easily the best part of the experience. Spend the night eating tapas and drinking at the local bars and restaurants such as Piccolo and The Esplanade. Then have breakfast/brunch at Starfish or Salt nearby. Expensive, but excellent. Also a great location for relaxing walks (Second Beach) or outings with children (playground opposite St Clair beach). One minor issue we had in our room was that the fuse board (right by the bed) was making a loud buzzing sound. We ended up switching the main power to the room off just to get to sleep! Otherwise, a lovely place to stay.
Robert M — Google review
View was gorgeous but there were white stains over the black duvet cover, heater didn’t work and most of the jets in the spa bath didn’t work. Room was smaller than expected. Personally paying $400 a night I would think that everything in the room would be perfect. Other than that the sound of the ocean while sleeping and the view was amazing
Charlotte S — Google review
Great location and view by the beach h but unfortunately our weekend away was tainted by a room/bed mix up. The receptionist on check in was unable to offer a solution and we spent the weekend going between receptionists to try and get a resolution. Its a shame management do not care about their customers satisfaction. Not what you would expect for the $$$
Kristyn R — Google review
So I had issues with this place. Being upfront there was an issue with the booking which was 100% my fault but I will say this hotel is very inflexible and grabby with customer's money, but they can be just be aware that if you need to change things in your itinerary this is not the place to stay. Despite costing me upwards of $500 that would bring my rating down to 4/5. Putting that aside you pay around $275 for the room and quite frankly it's just not that good for the price. Ok now it becomes a 3 star rating. Then I think about the check-in process, I used a work travel agency and when I gave them my card they said "that's not the card you paid with", they issued a pre-authorization charge which I couldn't pay wave. Just something I don't want to be mucking around with when it's late. Ok that 3-stars now became a 2-stars. The location is nice but out of the way. It's not a terrible hotel but my stay was rather unpleasant, if it was a really nice hotel I'd go out of my way to stay there but I can't honestly say I want to stay there again. Ever.

We had a lovely night staying here ,with the window open all night listening to the waves crashing. Dinner down below was marvelous

Cafe
EBB-Dunedin is an upscale boutique hotel exclusively for adults, featuring stylishly decorated rooms and suites along with a chic café. The hotel takes pride in offering specialty in-room coffee using the Kalita dripper and 70/30 filter blend, as well as a mini bar stocked with renowned Kiwi snack brands. EBB Cafe, led by esteemed chef Alison Lambert, serves Mahana Blend from a custom painted La Marzocco Linea PB.
We loved our stay at Ebb-Dunedin! The building is modern and visually striking, with its exterior adorned in stunning artwork. Inside, the airy atrium-style hallways create a welcoming and open atmosphere. Art lovers will especially appreciate the thoughtful design, abundance of artwork, and creative details throughout the hotel. Our room was warm and cozy, offering the perfect retreat. I especially loved the soaking tub and bath bomb—such a luxurious and relaxing touch!
Christine G — Google review
Definitely a rare experience in New Zealand. We’re even served with gin during check in. The hotel is well designed, and every piece in the room is carefully selected. Love how they provide indoor slippers. Beddings are nice and comfy. Soundproofing of the room is amazing. Good service and clean. The only downside is the bathroom, although with the wee screen, the water still splashes everywhere during shower. Location wise can’t complain. Walking distance to everything a traveller needs. Do recommend pay for the parking spot at the hotel as it’s tricky to park in town. Also may track the room rate even after made the booking. It’s a bit irritating finding out the rates were $100 lower per night than what we booked for months ahead. It’s unexpected for Christmas period.
Iris T — Google review
Great location and amenities. Rooms are large however the road noise and the bright lights from the mall were not great. The curtains don’t block the light at all around the edges. Would stay again and request a room not road side - otherwise bring an eye mask….
Luke A — Google review
If I could live here full time my life would be epic. The service was outstanding. The atmosphere, inspiring. The bed was so comfortable I slept for 10 hours without waking up! The full size bath came with a handmade bath balm… and plush towels.
Siddiqi R — Google review
It’s a nicely designed hotel lacking the service elements. Asked front desk about public transportation. She answered instinctively and gave me a wrong answer. She’s slow to respond and talking to her is like pulling teeth out of her. She’s polite though. However, there’s a manager in back room and she’s much better in service and knowledgeable. But she’s not there all the time and you need to ask the receptionist to get her out if you have specific needs. First time I had to pay surcharge for credit card. Amenities are not refilled. Unused towels are not picked up suggesting to reuse (bc fresh towels are provided) Dirty towel used to clean a spill of coffee was not removed. Logo canvas bag in the room is not complementary. It was good that there was a sign for the price. It’s got the hardware but need to work on the software if you want return customers. P.S. I now agree the other review about needing a desk in the room.
Bonbon H — Google review
Would not really recommend this hotel. The distinction where some rooms have desks and some don't is an odd choice. Reception doesnt have any spare desks. Most people would like a desk or table in their room, I think. I eat my muesli breakfast standing up, using a glass for a bowl and a small teaspoon. Been here 2 weeks now and getting a bit tired of it. Cafe downstairs is pretty slow to get food ready.
Andrew K — Google review
I was unfortunately let down by the operating policies of the hotel, which significantly detracted from the stay and made it difficult to appreciate the art and architecture. Policy Issues and Pre-Authorisation: I booked through Booking.com and was not made aware of the $200 pre-authorisation fee prior to arrival. Upon check-in, I was charged the full room fee, with the $200 pre-authorisation still pending on my card, rather than the pre-authorisation being offset or deducted from the final bill. This essentially ties up $200 of my funds and is an outdated and inconvenient policy, especially when not clearly communicated upfront on the booking platform. Request for Passport Information: The check-in process was further complicated by a request for my full passport details. When I inquired about the specific and necessary purpose for collecting this sensitive information, I did not receive a clear or satisfactory explanation. In a digital age, guests should be given a transparent and justifiable reason for why such personal documents are being recorded. While the art and architecture of the hotel may be commendable, the overall guest experience was completely overshadowed and let down by these frustrating and non-transparent operating policies. A hotel of this calibre should have modern, clear, and guest-friendly payment and data collection procedures.

The Distinction Dunedin Hotel is a top-tier accommodation option in the heart of Dunedin, New Zealand. Housed in the historic 1937 Chief Post Office building, this elegant hotel offers 121 suites and studio rooms, along with a restaurant, bar, fitness center, and conference facilities. Recognized as a heritage building by Heritage New Zealand, it exudes architectural sophistication.
We have just booked into the Distinction Dunedin today into a two bedroom studio and we were extremely positively surprised. The website doesn't really give you a good idea on how great this hotel actually is in real life. The rooms are obviously very recently refurbished but most importantly they have been done with taste and style. Muted tones, super comfortable beds and really well designed bathrooms that are even equipped with a washer and dryer. We were welcomed warmly by Ethan when we were checking in who couldn't be more accommodating. We had arrived before check in time and the room wasn't quite ready yet but he organised our bags to be delivered as soon as it was. All the other front desk staff we have dealt with have been fantastic as well. If you are staying in Dunedin and want a really great CBD based hotel that has really well appointed and incredibly tasteful rooms with wonderful staff then you really can't go past the Distinction Dunedin. First Class all round.

We had the please of staying Distinction a few weeks ago. Great room with another bedroom for our daughter. One of the highlights was the great food delivered to us from the hotel restaurant, Parcels. We had the slow cooked brisket which was lively and tender, full of flavour and the star of the dinner was the steak, excellently reverse seared, cooked perfectly ordered with a light char taste for the final sear on the grill, delicious. We will definitely be back.

Very comfortable stay at the Distinction hotel. The rooms were very comfortable. We stayed in the suite, it was very spacious and comfortable. Great location and walking distance to everything. The buffet breakfast was nice , good selection of choices available. The bacon could be a bit crisper though and the sausages were just ok. However bonus points for having hp sauce though😁 🙏 Staff were very friendly and welcoming. We would recommend this hotel. Thank you for the lovely stay. Best hotel in Dunedin.

My family and I were needing a well deserved break. This was our first stay at this hotel. It was excellent. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The rooms were wonderful - I even took pictures for my own home renovation ideas. On leaving, we felt refreshed and happy. Definitely coming back.

I could not write a description that accurately reflects how impressed and comfortable the stay was. The site, the staff, the food, the parking and the room were first class. The cleaning and facilities are impressive. Thank you for accommodating me.

Great Location, rooms are modern and spotless. The in house bar serves some great cocktails with a couple of specialties. This will be our hotel when visiting Dunedin

The hotel is excellent quality and probably one of the top 2 hotels in Dunedin. Very convenient car parking building right opposite the hotel and it's about a 10min walk to The Octagon for bars, restaurants and cafes. Shopping on George Street is another 3 min walk. The reception staff were polite and friendly and they very kindly gave us our room earlier than the check-in time. I was very impressed with our king room which is clean, tidy and spacious. It had a kitchenette, washing machine/dryer and plenty of storage for longer stays. The bathroom was modern and huge. Loved the large walk-in shower. Just a pity there wasn't any shelf in the shower to put my toiletries, only the very small soap dish on the slide rail. Missed opportunity here for a recessed wall shelf. Also would've been good to have one of those mirrors that self de-mist as the extractor fan didn't seem to do a good job of removing the shower steam quickly. The TV only had Sky movie options instead of being a Smart TV with viewing platform options like Netflix. This is limiting as you have to start watching the movies at the set start times rather than when you want to. Extremely soft and comfortable king bed. Loved it. A buffet breakfast was included in the very reasonably priced room. The breakfast options were the standard hot and cold options, but all very fresh and tasty. A lovely tastefully decorated restaurant/dining area. Highly recommended. I'd definitely stay there again.
Haydi F — Google review
Our reservation staff member was very nice and helpful but we found an overall service at the hotel was subpar. Everyone did their jobs but that’s it. At the lobby ,counter staff would stand there chatting most of the time and same goes for staff at the dining area. Food at breakfast buffet was good but the cleanliness of utensils and kitchenware were not clean. We found egg yolks stained on knives , some other stains on plates etc which was highly disappointing. Room was good, well equipped as it came with washing machine/dryer. Cleaning staff was from overseas and couldn’t speak English so we struggled with asking for more towels, and other items. Overall an average stay.

Nestled in the heart of Dunedin, the Dunedin Leisure Lodge - A Distinction Hotel is a laid-back retreat offering relaxed rooms with balconies. Situated on a 2-acre property with stunning gardens and lush lawns, this four-star hotel is conveniently located near major attractions like the Dunedin Botanic Garden, Otago Museum, Forsyth Barr Stadium, and University of Otago.
Stayed here for one night on a road trip around both islands On arrival two 70+ people (us) entered the hotel exhausted. We were warmly welcomed by Alex and booked in. He explained that our room was upstairs. Not really what we wanted to hear but laughed it off and asked where the lift was. Alex then said where were your bags. In the car. 2 Suitcases. He then proceeded to come back to the car and lifted them out and carried them up stairs to our room. A truly exceptional and helpful young man. On departure he bought our cases down Alex made us forget other problems we had encountered. Every hotel needs a Alex. Hold on to him.

While it’s certainly an acceptable, comfortable enough, clean and tidy room, I’m not sure by what standards this could be considered a 4-star hotel. The rate they charge certainly is but the room is bland, with no attempt to decorate, bathroom is cramped, there’s no ventilation or air conditioning. Probably ok in the winter but stifling in the summer. It’s probably been renovated in the last ten years or so, but in the most unimaginative way possible. We stayed at a time when the whole city seems to be fully booked so service is what it is, and rates are higher than normal, but it would be a mighty stretch to consider this room value for money.

On the edge of town but adjacent to the wonderful Botanical Gardens. Really spacious room and large bath. In house restaurant was quite nice. Really enjoyed the Blue Cod ! Can get a bit hectic at breakfast with the bus crowds. Not too many channels on the television but lots of rugby (yea!) unfortunately the Highlanders lost ☹️

Beautiful hotel, right next to the botanical gardens. just 10 minutes ride by bus from the city centre. The room service was not the best. But great breakfast and really friendly staff.

The Victoria Hotel Dunedin is a centrally located property in downtown Dunedin, offering modest quarters with some rooms featuring kitchenettes. The hotel prides itself on its acclaimed service, providing 24-hour reception and free room service from its two restaurants. Guests can also enjoy the lounge bar with complimentary Wi-Fi. The hotel offers a range of rooms to suit different budgets, from standard rooms to the luxurious Victoria Executive Suite.
Without going into too many details, there were some differences in the booking we had made through an online travel provider. Reception and duty manager were excellent in dealing with the situation and I felt their actions more than compensated for the miss communication. Great room. Would definitely stay again.

The facilities in the room were great, even though I felt like there was a weird division of space. The team was very attentive and kind. Nevertheless, I didn't really feel at "home", but maybe the intention of the place is to be a hotel.

My husband and I have just been to the Victoria Hotel restaurant "Well Manor" for our evening meal. It was so good I've decided to write a review. The people serving us were fantastic very kind and helpful. We both enjoyed our food it looked really good when it came out and a high standard of presentation and the food itself. What I liked was that everything was so clean the ambience was really good my husband's adding that the chairs were comfortable, he said the 🥗 salad was one of the better salads he had eaten while out and he commented on how reasonably priced the food was. We had a window seat so we were able to look out which I enjoyed as well. I can't complain about anything even the garden was beautiful. We met the gardener on the way back to the car and not only was the staff inside really helpful and friendly he also was a very friendly person.

Refurbished and very close to town, so walked everywhere. Would recommend for that reason alone. Room would have got 5 stars but for the stains on the carpet. Asked for eggs on toast for breakfast but that wasn’t possible, although Eggs Benedict was on the menu. 🤔
Hanne A — Google review
A basic, functional property lucky enough to have a good address. A bit tired and dated though and the first impression of three old men siting, smoking at a small table in the covered entranceway was mildly off-putting. Forgettable dining room.
Joe N — Google review
Location is Central, close to 2 main grocery shops. After opening our rooms door, a huge whiff of old, undried carpet came and greeted us. There was no air circulation. We opened the windows and kept the stand fan on the while time we were in the room. I mean? It can be great in winters but the rooms are a bit stuffy. In summers tho, like the day thst we checked-in. Wow, it was something else. It was a short stay and i didn’t complain. The staffs were nice The hotel’s restaurant served mean steaks and pasta. Their chowder was delicious! Would visit the restaurant again but not check in the hotel. There’s a $20 parking fee/ night.

Bluestone On George is a modern boutique hotel located on George Street in the heart of Dunedin. It caters more to single and business travelers as well as couples, offering warmly styled studio apartments with kitchenettes, laundry facilities, and private ensuite bathrooms. The hotel has an understated elegance with its sophisticated decor and cozy atmosphere. The adult-only apartment hotel provides a comfortable stay with amenities such as double body therapy spa baths, underfloor heating, bathrobes, and double-glazed windows.
Exceptionally clean and very well maintained. Decor is lovely and modern and furnishings very comfortable. The guest lounge area was also exceptionally clean with no grubby marks on the lounges or chairs ...unusual in common areas. The grounds were also well maintained with beautiful gardens and lovely seating areas. Neville and Sandra very friendly and welcoming and the couple of staff we came across were lovely and seemed very happy in their roles. We had a very relaxing and comfortable stay and we would highly recommend staying here. Don't bother looking anywhere else.
Lynda R — Google review
We loved our 6 night stay here. The spotlessly clean and modern apartment was easy to keep warm due to a very efficient wall heater plus the underfloor heating in the spacious bathroom. The kitchenette was well stocked and we made use of the washer/dryer. I found the bed and pillows very comfortable and just loved the feel of the whole place. There is good off-street parking, and Bluestone is very central so we walked to most places that we wanted to visit. The Governor's Cafe quickly became my favourite and that was only 500m away. We highly recommend Bluestone On George as a fantastic place to stay.

Loved this hotel. The room was designed and laid out perfectly. The bed and pillows were great. The bathroom was awesome. Everything about this hotel exceeded expectations. Would 100% stay here again if in Dunedin.

Fantastic accomodation. So well designed. So clean. When the room is serviced daily it is spotlessly clean. Vacuumed, buffed vanity and taps, fresh towels if you want them and oh so lovely and warm when you arrive. I can’t recommend the Bluestone on George highly enough.
Lynne F — Google review
Stayed at Bluestone for 3 nights and enjoyed their hospitality. The room was modern, clean, and located just up the street from the George street restaurants and pubs. Close to the University so had a college vibe. The town is very nice - we had some nice dinners (Plato for seafood!) and enjoyed an hour cruise on Otago Peninsula for some albatross viewing. St Clair beach was also very impressive. Make sure you do the walk up Baldwin Street also.
Dale Z — Google review
This place is immaculate and the attention to detail is amazing. Leaving early on a cold frosty morning I thought one of the staff had missed a beat and left cleaning materials outside by the front door till I realized it was a bucket of warm water, a squiggly and an ice scraper for the windscreen. They have truly thought of everything to make your stay the best it can be.
Tanya M — Google review
This is not really a hotel but more of a motel experience, and while we asked specifically for a quiet room it backed on to student digs that was rowdy and unpleasant until the early hours of the morning. Room also did not match up to the expectations of a loft apartment including the kitchen facilities and size.

I don’t normally do a review but I was so impressed. 3 things I look for cleanliness, comfortable bed and a quiet nights sleep ticked all the boxes. Thanks you

Nestled away from the lively atmosphere of Dunedin, Camp Estate is a luxurious retreat situated on the picturesque Otago Peninsula, just moments from the iconic Larnach Castle. This elegant country house features a select number of double rooms adorned with designer gas fireplaces and stylish black granite accents, blending modern aesthetics with a touch of heritage charm.
The Camp Estate s a bit out of Dunedin - but then it would not be so impressive if it was in town! (We stayed on Dec 16/17) The welcome was first class and the room was perfect. Every detail was looked after. Our hostess was very attentive and knowledgeable. The room was great with a lovely view. They were very accommodating when we had to leave early to get to Manapouri - provided an early breakfast, which was delicious. We also had dinner at the Castle and were driven there and back by the hostess which was very luxurious!

It is a beautiful place to stay a little outside of Dunedin up on the Otago Peninsula. The rooms are spacious and well equipped. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was very good. A very nice place to go on a walk early in the morning.

An excellent place to stay. The room was very well appointed, with a lovely view of Dunedin Sound. There was an excellent breakfast available, the eggs Benedict were very well done, a real pleasure to eat. The staff couldn't do enough for you to make your stay enjoyable. Certainly a place to return to again.

What a beautiful hotel! The rooms were cozy, clean and well-appointed. From the grand staircase to the jacuzzi and amenities in the bathroom, this hotel exceeded all my expectations. There's even a fireplace in our room. It's set in a very quiet spot with gorgeous courtyards in the front and the back of the estate. There is a salon with a fireplace where you can enjoy pre-dinner drinks and cocktails. I had my wedding here and the staff were unbelievably helpful and supportive. It was such a memorable experience and I will definitely be staying here again.

Only stayed one night but wish we had arrived earlier and had more time to enjoy the estate (our fault, not Camp Estate). Don't let "camp" fool you, this is a modern luxury estate. Large comfortable, well equipped room, nice heated bathroom....and a big tub!! Only six rooms, three booked on our stay. Personal staff, met us when we drove up. Drinks and canapes before dinner at the Castle (highly recommend) then drove us over and back. Delicious breakfast with fresh flowers and herbs from the garden. We spent several hours at the Castle, mostly walking thru the incredible gardens. According to my wife, the drive to the Estate was beautiful (I was busy concentrating on the narrow twisting roads). But if you want somewhere unique, out of town, away for a few day, this is it!

Our go to place when we need to get away. This was our second visit and it is always a fantastic place to stay. The facility it top notch, with great rooms and service. With only 5 rooms, you know you are going to experience quiet and personal service. Highly recommended, and take up the opportunity to have dinner with others at the nearby castle.
Tim H — Google review
Big and clean room. Looked perfect when we booked it. It is well located on the peninsula and the dinner at the castle is quite an experience. However, after 2 nights, we were quite disappointed by the cooked and continental breakfast (not great at all), and some basics are not there: no tissues in the room, no a/c, an ersatz of spa. Probably not worth the $500 a night.
Mathieu C — Google review
Breathtaking views. The surrounding area felt very much like a southern England countryside. The hosts Peter and Margo were the absolute best. We had the chance to have dinner the Lanarch Castle and they hosted drinks and canapés before driving us over for an AMAZING dinner at the castle. We then had an amazing home cooked breakfast by Margo next morning. Felt really spoiled and absolutely loved this place!!

Larnach Castle, the only 'castle' in New Zealand, is a Scottish baronial-style estate that offers tours to visitors. The castle boasts impressive craftsmanship and materials, with well-maintained gardens that follow an Alice in Wonderland-esque theme. The vibrant flowers during springtime are a sight to behold and have been meticulously cultivated over 45 years. Visitors can leisurely wander through the gardens or simply bask in the sunshine.
Our Larnach Castle (Lodge) overnight stay exceeded my expectations - absolutely loved it! The staff were fantastic, 10/10 for them! Lots of native birdlife around the property which was delightful. The castle itself is a marvel and you can go right up to the top of the tower to enjoy the view. It was great to be staying overnight to see the exterior of the castle all lit up. The garden would be prettier in summer when the plants are in flower but it is still nice to walk around especially the evergreen native pathways. Access to the castle and gardens was included in our room rate.
Mandy W — Google review
Larnach Castle is absolutely beautiful! So well looked after and full of fascinating stories to discover. The staff are incredible too, friendly, welcoming, and clearly passionate about the place. All around you, native birds through the gardens, which are stunning on their own and open up to breathtaking views. Inside, there are plenty of rooms to wander through, each with its own little surprises, and you can even climb up to the very top of the castle for a view that’s just wow. If you can, go in summer when the gardens are at their most majestic, but even in winter, the whole place feels magical, like stepping into another world.

It is a mock castle on Otago Peninsula built in 1871 and privately owned. It is opened to the public daily as a tourist attraction and offers tours, events and accommodation. It has magnificent gardens and there are guided tours within the castle. It is a significant tourist attraction in Dunedin, receiving approximately 120,000 guests per annum. Popular with tourists. Wear comfy shoes, take water, wear hat, sunscreen especially when touring the gardens. Beautiful place. Lots to see. Parking is easy. Great place for photography. Toilets available. Restaurants available serving a variety of food. Uneven terrain, lot of walking.

What an interesting place to visit! We stayed in the stables accomodation. Considering the price which includes breakfast and the entry to the castle and gardens its pretty cheap. The breakfast was great and staff very helpful. Rooms were clean but we found it to be a little loud (mainly water pipes and large entry doors closing) up until midnight. Castle and history is pretty amazing

Beautifully restored 19th century "castle " country home and gardens. We visited on a very rainy spring day, but the topiary and spring flowers were lovely. The interior contains period appropriate fixtures and decor, complete with 19th century bathrooms, family heirlooms and clothing. The woodwork and decorative details have been carefully restored. The narrow stairway to the tower was fun! This is an historic site, and private restoration of the Castle is ongoing. There are seperate accommodations on the grounds, but we didn't visit those.

We so enjoyed our stay here. It was exceptional. We had the best time at the dinner and making new interesting friends there. The food was amazing. What really made the stay was the night manager’s kindness. We are sorry we can’t remember his name, but he was amazing. He was knowledgeable, passionate, and an expert multitasker. Whatever he’s being paid, triple it!

Paid to visit the gardens $24. If you want to go in the castle as well it's $48. The gardens are lovely and the outside was just as nice. Coming from the UK it's not the I was expecting but it's lovely all the same from what we saw on the outside. You get pamphlets when you buy a tickets detailing the history and a map which was nice. The cafe/ballroom is something else entirely....so grand and very historic. The open fire places added a wonderful touch and you can sit outside in the marquee or even at the tables on the grass. We only got a drink so can't comment on the food but what we did see from other people it looked lovely. The afternoon tea we wished we'd done. It was a lovely visit.

Had a lovely stay here overnight and enjoyed touring the castle the next morning after an absolutely wonderful breakfast prepared by their chef. Definitely plan to return, it was a wonderful experience all around. Especially the bathroom floor that is heated, and made our feet so happy!

Larnach Lodge is a stylish accommodation located on the grounds of an 18th-century castle, offering stunning ocean views and a charming garden. The lodge provides affordable luxury with its refurbished historic stable and four-star themed rooms. Situated on the Otago Peninsula, it offers guests the unique opportunity to stay at a genuine castle estate. The purpose-built lodge features 12 themed rooms equipped with standard hotel amenities.
Amazing place. I want to return. You just couldn't dream of actually living and growing up in a place like this. So thankful for the people that restored it to what it is now. Just incredible. Even the weather put on a show for us. One day, clear as a bell. Could sit on the toilet and look out over the ocean. You could look out over the city from another. Next minute it all disappeared in fog. Could barely see 10 feet away. Just a total white out. I will remember this forever. A once in a lifetime experience that I would like to do again.
Ken C — Google review
The most beautiful view from the room we stayed in. Our room is at the corner of the lodge, so we can see the best view of the Otago Peninsula. Sadly, the deck that wrapped around our room in an L shape looked pretty old and needed urgent TLC. The room includes breakfast, which is set up in the old stables. The breakfast is very good and the stables really set the vibe for the day.

Very comfortable and close to the castle, with a nice view even with the bad weather. Really enjoyed my stay. The dinner was fun, met some great people and yummy food. The tour after was also interesting! Thank you.

This is a place you visit for whimsy. The Lodge rooms are adequate and nicely furnished. However, be warned the sound proofing is non existent! The dinner in the castle was pleasant but a bit expensive and not particularly comfortable as in the chairs and table- they may be period furniture but are crippling!! The meal though generous was pretty ordinary. Ditto for breakfast. But, the B&B is very reasonably priced. The Castle, its gardens and the views are incredible and definitely worth a visit though.
Diane M — Google review
I absolutely loved it here! The view and remoteness alone was worth it. I loved being able to hear all the birds in the morning and the evening and seeing them fly about was great. The rooms are comfortable, old fashioned but suits the vibe of the place. I also liked being able to explore the castle grounds after hours. We also booked into the dinner which was a nice experience. It was a little rushed though and felt like they were trying to get us out of there in record time! But think it's worth it as a one off. I would stay here again

This was our splurge hotel.....but it didn't feel very luxurious. The castle is well worth visiting. The view was amazing but the room itself -well it just wasn't that nice for the price. The bed squeaked and sagged in the middle. If you stay here I would stay one night and enjoy all the castle has to offer including the grounds and gardens. You can enjoy them before or after you check out. You cannot cook in your room and town is far away so you may want to bring a picnic lunch/ dinner. The breeakfast is fine but nothing special. The service was excellent. If you are spending the weekend relaxing here and you bring some kid of picnic I might give it more stars but just as an accommodation i can't.
Melissa — Google review
Experience was worth it and it's location is good and bad. Good as it's beautiful area. Bad it's 25mins plus into town for food no where close by for food besides there in house which is way overpriced. The beds in my option were horrible. But just the experience and where it is worth at least visiting once.

The Scenic Hotel Southern Cross is a historic, contemporary Dunedin landmark. It is well-renowned for its comfortable and convenient inner city accommodation, as well as its lively casino and cosy bar.
Reception team were lovely! We accidentally set off the fire alarm in out room when using our curlers and they were so quick to act and friendly about the whole situation. Very professional, we were expecting a telling off but the Duty Manager was so understanding. The 2 ladies that checked us in and out were bubbly and helpful, and the room was spacious with the most comfortable bed I think we've ever had in a hotel. 10/10 highly recommend!
Samantha C — Google review
Well situated, good facilities, but the room was cold, and took ages to warm up. A single convection heater in a large room with ventilation and high stud takes a lot longer to heat. Windows are single glazed, and you can hear everything outside. Unfortunately it was the worst night's sleep I've had in ages. Yelling down the hallways, yelling outside, and poor heating isn't going to help. The bathroom has no heating, is cold, but has all the basics. It's rather dated though. The staff is very courteous, polite, and helpful. Parking isn't bad, and secure at least. Port o' Call bar is rather good for food. Decent servings and well priced.
Alex G — Google review
The hotel is well placed with only a short walk to the Octagon and shopping areas. Our room was spacious and well appointed although the bathroom looked tired and dated. The room appeared clean and tidy, however there were a few hairs on the basin and soap scum around the edge of the shower. Our room was serviced after our first day but the standard was very poor. The fresh towels had just been tossed up onto a shelf (not even tidily or placed on the rails). It would seem an attempt had been made to wash our crockery in the bathroom sink but some were just left unwashed on the vanity. There were also coffee splashes around the basin. The toilet and shower appeared not to have been cleaned and the soap scum was still around the shower. The bed was pulled up somewhat neatly but the pillows just tossed on top. I found this service extremely poor and very disappointing. It’s not too much to expect to return to your room and find it clean and tidy. We were in a group of nearly 20 people and when we arrived at 4pm only some of our rooms were ready for our arrival. (Check in time was 2pm) We then found out that none of these door keys were programmed to our actual rooms therefore we couldn’t get in without assistance and hence needed to return to reception to get this remedied. The ones whose rooms weren’t ready said they would wait in the bar and were told staff would come to inform them when the rooms were ready. After waiting over an hour one of our friends went to reception to querie this and found that yes the rooms were in fact ready, but no, they hadn’t bothered to pass this on. Reception staff were very friendly and the buffet breakfast had a very substantial selection and was of a high standard. So, as much as the location was great and the food was very good, I definitely would not return to this hotel.

Lovely staff and great gym but the rooms are average. I was on the 6th floor of the main building - everything was dated and dusty. Couches were dirty and mattresses need replacing! Also the lights are very dim in the rooms

I stayed here for 13 nights in a Superior King Room on the 4th floor. Overall, it was a very comfortable and pleasant stay. The location is excellent — right in the heart of the city and just a short walk from The Octagon. Many major attractions, restaurants, pubs, banks, and a Woolworths are nearby. There are also around five Indian restaurants within walking distance, so it’s easy to find Indian lunch or dinner options. The room was spacious, quiet, and carpeted, with a king-size bed, two chairs, a table, and a bathroom with a bathtub. There was also a small kitchen area with a kettle, refrigerator, a few cutlery items, and complimentary tea, coffee, cookies, and milk provided daily. The bed was comfortable, and there was plenty of wardrobe space. Each room had an iron, ironing board, hair dryer, alarm clock, and a TV with around 22 channels (no Netflix or Amazon Prime). A heating pump and a separate fan were also available, which was very convenient. The room was cleaned daily, and towels were changed on alternate days. Breakfast was tasty and started at 6:30 am on weekdays and 7:00 am on weekends. I am vegetarian and found a few good vegetarian options. The breakfast spread included juices, breads, tea, coffee, hash browns, noodles, milk, curd, cornflakes, pancakes, muffins, croissants, and many more items. Breakfast was included in my booking; otherwise, it costs around $30 per person. I didn’t opt for lunch or dinner, but room service is available if needed. • Wi-Fi is free in all rooms and has good speed. • Laundry facilities are available; it costs $5 per cloth for washing and drying. • Elevator is available and works smoothly. • Car parking is available at $25 per night, but you can also find free parking nearby. • Check-in and check-out were smooth, quick, and hassle-free. The staff were very friendly, helpful, and available 24/7. They were always ready to assist with any request. A wonderful stay overall — perfect location, comfortable rooms, tasty breakfast, and great service. Highly recommended for families and anyone visiting Dunedin for a short or long stay.

My wife an I only stayed one night, just a brief visit to Dunedin. The hotel is nicely located close to the Octagon and Mall. If I had to identify one are to improve, it would be that some parts of the room were tired, but that is not a major to us. The service and interaction with every staff member was great, all helpful, all upbeat, which is much more important. Beds were great, had a good night sleep. Will definitely stay again, hopefully a bit longer next time.

This is not a 4star hotel maybe a 2. The bathroom was one of the worst I have ever seen. The toilet is crowded into a corner and the toilet paper holder sits under your chin. We did the big breakfast, most of the hot food was cold. The website forgot to mention parking was $25.

Nestled in the heart of Dunedin on Princes Street, the Scenic Hotel Dunedin City offers a stylish retreat just a stone's throw from the vibrant Octagon. This modern hotel boasts chic accommodations, some featuring delightful balconies that provide stunning views. Guests can indulge in a variety of amenities including a well-equipped fitness center, an inviting lounge bar complete with a cozy fireplace and TV, and complimentary Wi-Fi to stay connected during their travels.
Very large king room. Spacious, comfortable beds. More than enough linen and toiletries, we received more than we usually do at other hotels. There is 2 laundry rooms where you can also purchase washing powder like a vending machine for $2 but we received 1 free. It has 1 washing machine and dryer which cost $4 each. Also has books and a microwave in the room which is very handy. The location is great right in town. Service very good as well. The price was amazing. Very cheap compared to nearby places and just overall for a hotel. Would stay here again next time.

Handy location, just a few minutes walk to the octagon. Great beds, super comfy. Didn’t try the in-house dining or bar, but looks reasonable for the hotel class. This isn’t the most modern hotel but it is clean, it is spacious and it is comparably cheap when pitched against the Distinction or the Fable. Wifi is ok, not super fast, but you can work comfortably. Not for heavy graphic applications, struggles a wee bit. Otherwise I’d describe it as dependable, if you’re just looking for a bed, you can’t go past these guys.

A Great Stay! The staff were absolutely lovely and very accommodating. I had a late afternoon flight and requested a late checkout - they went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable until my airport pickup. I was even able to finish off some work by the fireplace, which was such a nice touch. 😊 Would definitely stay here again on my next visit to Dunedin!

OUTSTANDING SERVING- There was a lovely lady in the Dunedin hotel and she was amazing. Served with her heart and I’m so gutted I didn’t get her name but she will know. The kindest thing to be done. I asked for some filter water and she insisted to take my drink bottle and asked me if I wanted ice ect and she did it all for me. So so sweet! If you stay anywhere like a hotel ect the service should be the minimum of what is provided and this lady did that and more. Helped us with all we needed. Only one thing I would note to make better is the bathroom shower curtain had a few large spots of blood stain on it which made it look unclean. Just note if it’s like this to maybe be bleached? It was a little loud from the street but we were 6 floors up so it was strange to hear so clear the busses and cars and people on the street. It was doable though! Thanks team

My husband had a stroke during a cruise and was admitted to duneden hospital. I was lucky enough to book into scenic hotel duneden for a week. The staff were commendable and made my stay more than comfortable. They supported me thru the process of my husband being in hospital. They allowed me to use their phone to stay in contact with Australia until I had the opportunity to organise phone contact for myself. I will always remember their courteous treatment which made this ordeal a lot easier for me. The room was very clean and the cleaning staff were very obliging. The reception staff excelled themselves and the restaurant food was top class. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone wishing to have top class accommodation at a reasonable price. THANK YOU Scenic from the bottom of my heart

Wonderful location, the room was spacious, and staff on the front desk were nice. The breakfast service though is the worst I’ve experienced with a hotel. They appeared to be under-staffed, with there not being enough food at the buffet and there being dishes strewn across the tables from previous guests. We had to clear the tables so that we could eat at them, there were no utensils available (though I found a teaspoon to eat my bacon with), and then the coffee machine didn’t work (there wasn’t any milk). The wait-staff also handled the food with their hands (no gloves) and ate from the buffet while we were there (rather than grabbing and eating their food while in the kitchen).

The Hotel is centrally located just above the Octagon. The beds are comfy (a bit soft for my liking) rooms are not tiny, a reasonably good representation of 4 stars. The staff are friendly and accommodating, food is good. However they do have limited parking so you end up parking on the street which is free till 9am.

Quite impressed by the standards and value for money. Location is superb, food and hospitality on the doorstep. The place is double glazed, warm and quiet. The 2bedroom apartment was roomy enough clean and tidy aswell. Good water pressure in shower! Will definitely keep this on my list for future travel. A+

Travelled around the South Island and this was the best accommodation we had. Not the flawless and flash 5 star kind but clean and comfortable and everything you need with so much space. A convenient location with parking as well. Reasonable price. Really good!

We have just had a few days in Dunedin at your motel and must thank you very much for a most comfortable room and the king size bed was just like ours at home! The room was so very well designed and had a great outlook across the city . The position was ideal and easy to access in walking distance. The amazing thing about it was it was so very quiet. And the car parking was so convenient. Thank you so much.

Was good. Very handy to hospital, plenty of food places nearby. Warm and comfortable, friendly and helpful service from the guy at reception. Would stay here again no hesitation.

The room was very spacious, and even though we chose a non-cooking type, it still came with a full set of utensils and cutlery. Everything was spotless and well-kept, making it a place where you can truly rest comfortably and with peace of mind.

Delightful accommodation, beautiful view of a magnificent old tree and church, the apartment felt spacious, excellent amenities and layout well thought out to make for a comfortable stay. The decor was fantastic and charming. The hosts were very thoughtful leaving bread, eggs and spreads. I appreciated the litre bottle of milk plus good quality tea as I do enjoy a delicious hot beverage! Beds and pillows were nice and comfortable too. We were close to everything restaurants and some lovely little art galleries. Highly recommend 👌

Can't rave enough about this place. Booking was a dream with Dan and Andrew and instructions were clear and concise. The apartment (Henry Matthews) was amazing - we loved our stay so much. It is high end without being stuffy and so comfortable - the seating, the beds - just fabulous. Location is unbeatable - out the front door and you are 5 minutes to anywhere you'd want to be. We stayed for our son's grad and enjoyed a flawless dinner at one of the 'vaults' at the Distinction Hotel - all in all an incredible weekend and we would never stay anywhere else in Dunedin. Highly recommend!

I can't say enough about how wonderful this apartment is. The decor, the vibe, the color palette- all amazing. What makes it stand out, though, is all the little touches: the host left a full breakfast for us of eggs, oatmeal, English muffins, honey and jam. Additionally, there was a whole martini "bar" set up complete with olives in the fridge- complimentary. The beds were so comfy and cozy and the linens high quality. I loved the location as well, we walked to everything. Just a unique, amazing beautiful, comfortable stay all around. I have never really seen a place like this. Stay here! You will not regret it.

Thank you, Bell Hil team. We had a relaxing working holiday stay and so nice to reacquaint ourselves with the spaces and to see them working as envisaged from the concept stages. Fabulous reading the comments on here too and seeing such rewarding feedback from your other guests. Well done for keeping the high quality and standard of care top notch. We will be back!

A fabulous old building in centre of town with such a lovely ambiance. We really enjoyed our time here - a home away from home. So thoughtful with the touches including fresh bread, fruit, jams, milk and juice. There were books, magazines and lots to read. Our only regret is we only booked 2 nights and it wasn’t long enough to explore the city and surrounds. Nice and warm, comfy beds and couch. We were greeted by Andrew as we were entering and he was very kind, offer information and support and how to reach out if we needed help and we really appreciated that. It was easy to access building with the pin code. We had a small car and it was easy enough parking under the building. Access via the lift up to the first floor. It a dart board and a table tennis table under building. BRU next door make a great coffee, Vault 21 served great food. The Tuhura Otago museum was very very good and we could have stayed a lot longer. We explored the city and also discovered Port Chalmers - a great little village, watched the ships, my friend did a great beach ride with Hare Hill Horse Treks and got to see sea lions and we had a great feed at the historic pub afterwards. Thank you Dunedin and also Dan and Andrew for all the information and we would recommend your apartment to others.

Bell Hill Apartments are quite simply the BEST++. Ater spending 3 nights in one of these why would one bother to go anywhere else. Everything was superb. We had booked the bike/ferry/lunch package. All organised for us, all we had to do was hop on our rented bikes and cycle the amazing Harbour trail. Andrew came to check in the morning to see if we had everything under control. Not only that he appeared late that afternoon to check we were all ok (it had rained). Absolutely fabulous care and concern during our entire stay. Thank you.

Nestled in the heart of Dunedin, the Kingsgate Hotel Dunedin offers a relaxed atmosphere perfect for travelers seeking comfort and convenience. This charming hotel features 55 well-appointed rooms, each boasting private balconies that provide stunning views of the city. With various room configurations available—ranging from twin to family setups—there's something to accommodate every guest's needs. Visitors rave about the friendly staff and cozy accommodations, making it a popular choice among those exploring Dunedin.
Always great to stay here as a family - reasonably priced rooms always clean, well presented, meet all our needs as well as being close to town. While facilities are a bit dated, it ticks most of the boxes for us. The only negative for us is lack of parking - caused frustration each night we stayed. Staff ALWAYS exceptionally friendly and accomodating, great to have breakfast each day and even Foxy got looked after by the very friendly and obviously sweet cleaning staff member that attended our room today - we’ve stayed four times in the last two years and will always come back :)

Loved the room me & my sister was in 208 the heater was beautiful the bath was gud just the towel rail was too high to reach the view was beautiful had no microwave or toaster no welcome pack or information on nearest shops or wifi. It's old but very beautiful & close to were my sister lived. Thank you.

Our room met expectations, coffee tea and mini fridge with some milk was provide and kettle-No cocoa, soaps and towels provided-No lotion, Sky TV was lovely to watch, balcony to walk on and get fresh air was lovely. other guests were noisy late in the night, the close CBD distance means listening to sirens and drunk people all night-I didn't sleep so good.... I will add caution with the shower/bath as it is shallow but lifted off the ground and the step down when you finish can be quite hazardous on tile floors-Guest should use caution and place floor and anti-slip mats, a stepping stool with may be beneficial for some

Close to shops and eateries. Rooms comfortable but need toilet/shower/bath revamp. Breakfasts brilliant. Tried to bill us for delivered evening meals & drinks. From where? They don't have a restaurant. We ate out, each night. Don't know whether servicing a room means replacing towels only. Thought this also includes replenishing tea facilities & bed making. No! Not the one.
Noeleen G — Google review
I’ll start by saying that I understand this is an older hotel. I understand that there will be issues with sound proofing etc. but there were several issues that should have been addressed as I cannot be the first person to experience it. 1. The elevator reeked of cigarette smoke and even a short ride up to our floor was brutal. The elevator is also very small and if you have large luggage or multiple bags, you may require a few trips. They do have stairs available which we opted to take after the smell made us feel sick. 2. The parking. No where does it mention that the parking is limited. We checked in 45 minutes to an hour after check in opened and as soon as we walked up to the front desk the lady said “there’s no parking so you’ll have to park on the street somewhere but only after 6pm. This was frustrating as when we booked the hotel we specified that we required parking. We had to drop our stuff off in our room and leave with our car for another 3 hours just so we wouldn’t get towed. This was annoying because we had been driving for 10+ hours and just wanted to shower and relax. 3. The bathroom. We noticed that there was mould in the bathroom and the base of the door was damaged. I took a shower and within 3 minutes the entire bathroom was flooded. (Pictures attached). We tried calling the front desk around 7pm but nobody answered. We called a few more times but again, no answer. No employees to be found and we had to use our bath towels to try and soak up the water but that obviously didn’t work due to the amount of water there was. 4. The room. Other than the fact that you could hear everything due to the walls being so thin (which as previously mentioned is understandable). The hotel states it is smoke free but all of the balconies below us had people smoking on them which filled our room with the awful smell of cigarette smoke. This went on all evening and into the night and made us sick. We couldn’t even have a door or window open due to the smell. As well, we noticed that there were lots of stains on the bed, including what looked like a small blood stain on the mattress under the very tiny mattress protector that doesn’t cover the whole mattress. Again, nothing was done about this because there were no staff to answer the phones or attend to the front counter. On top of all of this, while sitting in bed we noticed the sound of water dripping which got progressively louder. We tracked the sound down to behind the wardrobe. It wasn’t a water pipe as we could hear when others flushed the toilet or used their shower and the sounds came from a different location in the room. Again, I understand that this is an older hotel but there are health and safety issues present that should’ve been addressed ages ago due to the obvious signs that there is something wrong. If I had all of this information beforehand, I would’ve chosen to stay elsewhere. The location of the hotel is close to the city centre which was nice but otherwise there were no other pros to staying here. As I can guarantee that I probably wont get my money back, I would highly advise for others to do proceed with caution when booking this hotel, especially if you have young children or if you have any health issues as the items mentioned above would make for a terrible stay. This is just from the first night and we have not yet experienced the breakfast or check out so I cannot comment on those items.

Do not expect anything new or exciting. This place is old and internal linings have been put in by someone that hasn’t really learnt the art of neatness. People are friendly that’s a good point Location although on top of a hill, it’s close to everything, note you can get in via the car parks and not have to walk Stuart if coming back from the octagon. Woolworths, and everything is walking distance. Lift - I thought it was very vintage and charming, people seem to hate it. Common areas - my god they need a clean, revamp, broken cracked tiles, it’s more like a dormitory. Room - they had no ceiling lights except for the bathroom, one lamp had a busted globe but there were two, tv didn’t work and required hard reset, door does not have a slide lock it seems to have been removed and not patched. There is no air con or fans in summer this place would be hot, I hat to regulate in may. Room simply is very dated and set up like no one really cared or checked. The lounge looked like there had been plenty of things happening on it. Bathroom - it was ok considering the rest of the place but I haven’t had to shower in a bath for a long time. It was not the worst but my tap liked to turn off a bit. To put it in a nutshell, it needs a floor by floor renovation and tidy up in most cases paint would make a difference and putty up holes in doors. The place was ok but I stayed a day too long and the price point you are really paying for the location, it’s not much less than I paid per night in Christchurch for a 5 star hotel, funnily enough had more dramas than the Kingsgate. The hotel could be much much better but right now it’s looking like no one cares and to be frank I’ve stayed at 2 hotels operated by this group and both have been very much the same which means I’ll never stay with them again. People nice but seriously the hotels are showing you don’t care and honestly I was not impressed…I had that pay by the hour room feel.
Mark W — Google review
If I could give -5 I would. The worst hotel I’ve quite literally ever stayed at. Severely overpriced and awful service.
Geo T — Google review
The hotel was likely built in the 70s or 80s, and it still looks very dated on the exterior and interior. However, the rooms and bathrooms have been done up a bit to modernise it. The lifts are old and small. The reception staff were friendly and helpful. The room was spacious, but due to the concrete panelled ceiling, it appeared that it may be too difficult to install modern down lights. Therefore, stand-alone lights and lamps have been used instead. Also, there was only one double power plug behind the bed, but in the middle of wall, which made it difficult to reach to plug my mobile into for charging and to use my alarm. The bathroom was tiled with a shower over the bath and the old style shower curtain. It was clean and tidy, but the fan ventilation didn't work very well. Also, the old style shower head didn't allow for good water pressure. The hotel made it very tricky to find the hair dryer, which was tucked right at the back of a shelf in a not so obvious location, and the hairdryer power was very weak. I had breakfast there one morning for an extra $30. It was a reasonable buffet style breakfast with the standard selection of hot and cold foods. The location of the hotel is right on top of a hill, not too far from the Octagon and the city, however it would be very hard to walk to as the hill is very steep and the drive-on access is narrow. The view from my room was not very pleasant, as I looked out onto a parking lot and some power/electrical machinery construction site. I would say that with this hotel price being low to average, you get what you pay for.

The Law Courts Hotel in Dunedin offers a pleasant and memorable experience with its range of single, double, triple, and twin rooms as well as a newly refurbished three-bedroom apartment. The hotel's central location provides easy access to the city's attractions including The Octagon. Despite its affordable rates, the hotel is well-appointed with modern furnishings and basic amenities in each room. Guests can enjoy a good value pub meal at the casual restaurant and bar on-site.
The last time we went here for a meal I thought we had stepped into the dark ages. The new owners have made a fantastic job of updating the bar/restaurant.The decor is very smart and the owners and barman were very friendly and accommodating. The ribs and the bangers and mash were very reasonably priced and generous servings. There were 80 people arrive a day earlier than they had booked so the place was humming. We will definitely be back.

7 of us dined for tea tonight. Every one of us were very happy with our meals. Beautifully cooked and huge portions. Loved the restaurant setup, it feels homely and nostalgic. Best part was the meals were super affordable. We will be regulars from now on. Great service too. Highly recommend!

Came in for dinner with the family and it was amazing. They’ve had a recent change in ownership and you can tell these owners care. We had the bangers & mash and the roast dinner. Very well priced for the amount of food you are given. Good to find a place the still makes classic bangers & mash. Will definitely be back again.

The Law Courts Hotel is a lucky find for us and anyone else who wants to camp in the middle of Dunedin. Perfectly located a couple of hundred metres from the Octagonal. Surrounded by any number of great cafes, restaurants, shopping, museums and event centres. An added bonus is the pub style restaurant which is part of the bar downstairs. Well priced (we were initially attracted by a special deal) the lower levels have just undergone a major renovation with updates planned for rooms ahead. Due this, I rate the room as a 4 star with a dated shower but superking bed was comfortable and new. Establishment well managed and maintained. Highly recommended. This is our new favourite downtown overnight stop. P

I have only visited the downstairs Bar, where there is access to a small smoking room. Once a while back I enjoyed breakfast in the dining room. I happen to like this Hotel for reasons that I could never put into words. There is a modern machine for placing bets on horse racing and the greyhounds etc. That pastime usually keeps me occupied while I try to enjoy a lager. The location, the character of the building and the general atmosphere add to a pleasant time.

My wife and I spent three nights here. The motels are very good value for the price. They are small as others have said, but they are clean and warm, the beds are comfortable. The ensuite is adequate. They are "studio" units, so no cooking facilities. But there is a fridge, toaster and electric jug, with three sets of crockery and utensils. So it is adequate to prepare and consume a continental breakfast. The units are serviced daily so washing dishes is not an issue.Though we did find that having only one chair was an issue, as was not having a table to eat from. However we adapted to these. I did suggest to the proprietor that providing fold up TV trays and fold up chairs would enhance them. These could be stored in the wardrobe, which has heaps of room. Meals were not an issue as the hotel is right next to them and has good pub meals. at reasonable prices. We will most certainly stay there when next we are in Dunedin.

Highland House Boutique Hotel is a charming old building located just outside the city center, making it convenient for both walking and driving. Guests have praised the cleanliness of the accommodations and appreciated the welcoming hosts who were accommodating to their needs. Its proximity to local amenities such as supermarkets, pharmacies, and botanical gardens makes it an ideal base for exploring the area.
Historical building, nicely renovated and decorated. We got an early check-in, a room upgrade and a late check-out (as we traveled for the Dunedin marathon event and needed more time to get ready after the race). Staff was friendly and our room had everything we needed (and definitely more character than your usual hotel room). Close to the city centre, botanical gardens and a supermarket, also to quite a few eateries and take away places, all within walking distance (or a few minutes by car). Overall - great value for money.

I had to find a room in a hurry. I booked it through their website in the morning. I arrived shortly after 2pm only to find they'd overbooked and the other people had arrived first, so there was no room for us. It was a major inconvenience for us, as my son wasn't feeling well and needed a lie down. If somehow they overbooked, I'd expect to be contacted to let us know, so we could find another place.

We recently stayed in a family suite. The room was perfect, it had everything we needed and was warm and comfortable. It was also the ideal location for us, as we could easily walk to the local supermarket, pharmacy and the botanic gardens. Having a car park right outside was great. We also spent a whole day walking all around the town centre, so Highland house was in the perfect location to do this. Thanks for a great stay

The property unexpectedly managed to accommodate us for an early checkin. We checked early the next day and inadvertently left our medications in the room, reception was kind enough to call us and advise us.
Peter C — Google review
Didn’t have power for half the day, then didn’t have hot water or any water, toilets weren’t flushing and couldn’t shower. Tv didn’t work the second day (just had the letter n and kept loading) rung up reception twice and they didn’t answer. Wanted breakfast and put the order on my door and it never came. They charge $15 per night for parking but couldn’t access it with cars blocking the entrance. When I said that to the larger lady she was very rude and had an attitude problem. Don’t know who she thinks she was talking to. However the young girls at the desk during check in and out were very polite. Couldn’t even get out the entrance for a walk at 11 at night I was locked in. Dust where they keep the cups upside down, not nice. Staff loud during day when they are cleaning rooms which is really unprofessional. Modern room, good kitchenette and shower pressure when we had water was the only positive. Don’t think I’ll be back here again. Didn’t even bother to respond to my feedback.

Nice enough rooms, but a few issues put me off staying here, the main was the bins being emptied and dragged around at 3am, this woke everyone up and went on for a long time, the bins were being pushed down past the buildings then the truck loading them on. Guess this would be ok to stay if it wasnt bin collection day. I get there is always going to be some noise, but this was excessive, and means I will never go back. Parking in the underground carpark was ok, but when going back it is where all the staff congregate and smoking in the undercover carpark, and it is very unpleasant. I have give 3/5 as it was nice enough, but would not stay again

Comfortable enough and had extra bedding. There isn't air conditioning, but rooms are provided a fan. Laundry facilities is a shared space.

The housekeeping team is super unprofessional. I heard huge noise from 8am and I thought it was my neighbor so I just didn’t complain. But later on I found it was the housekeeper outside playing the music in the corridor. The housekeeper was also very unfriendly, knocking our door very hardly and pushing us to check out, with an accent no one can understand. Really upset about the service standard.

The trip includes crossing the Taieri Gorge on a high viaduct, passing numerous high bridges and 10 tunnels carved out of hillsides.

Commentary was fabulous, food on the trip was great. Sadly the Dunedin side of the Taireri gorge is pines, gorse, and broom. The river has clearly been disturbed by activity up stream..it was dirty. Nothing I have seen in a NZ mountain river. Probably logging. Rail engineering and construction is amazing and the high country stop was a highlight.

A visit to the train station was free and the building itself a stunner. We also visited the gallery on level one which had a artisan shop and also a gallery. The sports museum is also located there. Plenty to see and do 🤗🤗🤗

We had a great time on our Dunedin Railways tour! They had a nice lunch box for us that had a sandwich, a sweet treat, some cheese, and crackers and also had water. Bob was our tour announcer as we saw the great sights of Dunedin and he was a nice gentleman that had a great personality and contagious smile! Kenzie also made sure that everyone was doing well on board and having a great time!

Cool railway station with art galleries on the second story to look at. Nice to escape the weather and see stuff inside. No need to pay for entry or anything

I treated myself to a trip on The Stargazer from Dunedin to Hindon and back. The trip didn't disappoint, from arrival where staff from Tuhura Museum helped everyone get their stargazing apps up and running to getting off at the end. Precinct at the Tuhura Museum provided us with a great tasty 3 course meal. It was much appreciated by everyone from the comments I could hear from the seats around me. The lamb was magnificent and went well with my glass of wine. Once we arrived at Hindon, they divided us into 3 groups, and we attended the different workshops on offer. My favorite was looking through the telescopes provided by The Beverly Begg Observatory. It was pretty special getting a close-up look at our celestial neighbors. Much kudos to them as they had been waiting up there in the cold for us all to arrive in our warm and comfortable train. I keep thinking about the beautiful Jewellry Box constellation with all the different colours. I'm now looking at the night sky differently. Thank you to all who took part in teaching us about our skies. Finally, sated and tired, we hopped back on our warm train to travel home. But they weren't finished with us yet. On the way home,we got to listen to astrophysicist Michelle Thaller answer questions that we had put to her earlier. She covered everything from going to Mars, Aurora, and pineapple on pizza. She has a great way of putting information that sticks with you and is fun. It was a fantastic night, and if you have the opportunity to go on this trip, I couldn't recommend it to you highly enough. Just go and enjoy a great evening adventure.

We travelled from Pukerangi to Dunedin after the Central Otago rail trail. It was a great experience I would recommend for the history and landscape. There was in informative live commentary. The Dunedin Station is one of the finest buildings in NZ and worth seeing . The food onboard was great. I hope that one day the train will be able to go all the way to Middlemarch township like it used to.

The Royal Albatross Centre is a large wildlife sanctuary located on the scenic Otago Peninsula in Dunedin. It offers an observatory, exhibits, guided tours, and a cafe for visitors to enjoy. The center is the only one of its kind in the world and provides opportunities for visitors to get up close and personal with the Royal Albatross. Activities include hand-rearing chicks, learning about conservation efforts, and going on guided tours of the peninsula to discover its history and wildlife.
Quite a cool place. The center itself has portions of it dedicated to the history of the space, the birds itself and the people involved in its studies of it. The lighthouse, the Fort and the cliffs itself was part of the guide.. The walking tours are till 3pm. The staff are all very friendly and not pushy on their tours. The environment around center is superb. Spectacular views. Ample parking.

You can visit the world's only mainland colony of Royal Albatross at the tip of the Otago Peninsula in Dunedin, New Zealand. Small guided tours to a glassed hide allows viewing of some of the nesting albatross. To protect the albatross from human disturbance, the headland is not publicly accessible. You can see adults in flight with their three metre wingspans as they glide around the headland. The centre is free to enter but tours are charged. Uneven terrain, lot of walking. Toilets available. Cafes available on site. Before the walkabout tour, you are given a demonstration/lecture about the birds and the work of the centre. Popular with tourists. Wear comfy shoes, take water, wear hat, sunscreen. Parking is easy. Amazing place to visit. Great place for photography.

We had a lovely afternoon today visiting the Royal Albatross Centre and doing the Classic Albatross Tour. Libby our guide was amazing - so passionate and informative. We learnt so much about these amazing birds and even better got to see the adults in flight and albatross fledglings nearly old enough and ready to take flight to South America. The red billed gulls also made themselves known - extremely comical and loud. A great visit.

Seeing Royal Albatross fledglings and parents, including feeding, was a very, very special experience. A well thought out visitor centre, and our viewing experience was enhanced by our very knowledgeable guide. The cafe is also worth a stop - the carrot cake is superb!

Awesome place to visit, didn't go on the tour, so missed seeing the Albatross - it was quite a blustery day. There are hundreds of Seagulls nesting here - that was a site to see. We had some lunch in the cafe - would recommend.

Amazing experience. We got to watch adults bringing food back to their chicks, and the viewing deck gave us such a good look. The guide was excellent and explained everything really well. Knowing it’s the only mainland breeding colony in the world makes it even more unique. Definitely well-worth a visit.

Had a really wonderful visit on World Albatross Day. Saw the birds right from the carpark gliding around and the chicks nesting were really special to see. In particular, I was impressed by the tiaki- the respect, passion, and conservation efforts in place to care for these beautiful creatures. I would certain recommend a visit to view and support conservation efforts for these birds and this place.

Tūhura Otago Museum in Dunedin, New Zealand offers a diverse range of cultural and natural history exhibits. Visitors can explore hands-on science areas, a planetarium, and a butterfly house. The museum is home to rare collections of natural specimens and human artifacts from various Pacific cultures. Permanent exhibitions include Tangata Whenua showcasing Southern Maori artifacts, as well as a maritime gallery featuring a massive Fin Whale skeleton and ship models.
Fantastic museum. The free to look around areas are fabulous and took around 1.5 hours for a good look through, but you could easily spend 2-3 hours looking at more detail and interacting with the displays. We went to specifically look at the Relics display which is a temporary display that is there until the 27 April 2025. It was stunning, tickets required to this area. Well worth a visit. There is also a science and tropical area with 100’s of butterflies 🦋. It’s a brilliant experience. Well worth it. Wheelchair friendly for 90% of the areas. Sitting areas around the museum, so if you get tired easily this is great. Clean toilets. Cafe and shop there too. We didn’t use these services this time.

Our kids enjoyed the science centre, spent a fair bit of time here, the planetarium was ok would've more liked to hear about facts of the solar system and see more planets than just the astrology constellations. Butterfly house was nice with some birds also. Most I've paid for a museum before.

I enjoyed my visit to the Dunedin Museum and Butterfly House. It's a fantastic place with a great mix of things to see. Highly recommended for visitors to Dunedin!

The museum's experience is the best visit for me in Dunedin. I can't believe so many butterflies in front of my eyes! Amazing and must try in Dunedin. The museum is big and probably you have to spend a day here!

Was a lovely museum and spent a good 3 hours here, you definitely need to pay if you have kids to get into the science area and butterflies as they were the. Ist interesting areas. We paid $81 for our family to get into that and also the planetarium as well. I wouldn’t say it was worth it for that amount and wouldn’t go again because of the price but worth it if you want to tick it off the list or need something to do indoors. Also has a cafe which was great.

I recently visited the Tuhura Otago Museum and was thoroughly impressed by the wide range of exhibits on display. One of the standout attractions is the 2,500-year-old Egyptian mummy, which is astonishing to see in person. The museum's ship model display is also quite remarkable. Among the impressive collection, I was delighted to find a model of the ship my ancestors arrived on in 1930. The museum also features a LEGO display, which looks like a lot of fun, but it requires a separate ticket that I didn't purchase. Another highlight of the museum is the Wildlife Attic, where they have a variety of taxidermy animals from all over the world. It was fascinating to see such a diverse collection. Overall, I had a wonderful time exploring the exhibits, and the friendly staff made the experience even better. I highly recommend a visit to the Otago Museum for anyone interested in history, wildlife, and unique displays.

Visitors can explore the Speights Heritage Centre for an informative tour through the brewery and museum, followed by tasting sessions at the private Heritage Bar.
👍 Like my review! The tour and tasting was worth it ... especially with Carlos as your tour guide. The cost of the tour was $45 which I initially thought was pricey until at the end. The tour is 45 minutes which was too short for a nerd like me but too long for those who just wanted the tastings. Once you get to the tastings, make sure you know what you want because they may have to close up at the end. I tasted all 10 they had to offer and was even provided a paper and pen for my notes. Yes, I'm one of those people who really appreciates a good damn beer. My experience was only elevated thanks to Carlos including his kindness, knowledge, and sense of humor. Overall, I would recommend it to friends and family! Make sure to not drive home right away since you'll enjoy your time.

Fabulous tour by Marty this afternoon. Very informative and lots of artefacts to look at. The walking wasn't too far and the tasting session at the end was most enjoyable. Was a bonus to get 10% off in the shop too.

We had an amazing tour with Carlos. From start to finish he was patient, never rushed us through and was thoroughly explanatory. If your into history and beer then this is a fantastic tour for you. From how it all started to now was a great insight to the legendary crafted beer we still drink today. Then at the end of the tour you get to taste some or all of the 9 beers + 1 apple cider which we tasted all 😄. Great value for money and highly recommended.

A really fun thing to do. And this is coming from a girl who is by no means a beer fanatic. Thomas was a great tour guide, incredibly knowledgable and very passionate. Good sense of humour too. Really cool to do a truly South Island experience, delicious beer tasting at the end, plus the gift shop does actually have quite cool stuff! Thanks for a fun arvo team :)

Marty was amazing, great tour, loved speights products and production, must visit to have few beers at the bar end and see how the are made.

Great tour! It was really good getting to go around the brewery and learn all of the history. I believe our guide was Thomas and he was so helpful and answered all the questions. It was great at the end as well because you also got to try so many different beers. My boyfriend has loved speights whilst living in Nz so he loved it!! The only problem though is our tour group was so big- there was around 30 people so it meant it took a while to go through each room, harder to hear and not as comfortable. When we were in the history room we didn’t have enough time to read any as we were rushed though which was a shame. I would recommend they have smaller groups! Overall, I would really recommend going as it made our trip so great!

Restaurant
The Press Club is a modern bistro located in the newly opened Fable Dunedin, which is a reinvention of the historic Wains Hotel. The restaurant's name pays homage to the journalists who used to gather at the former Wain's Hotel in the 1870s. The menu focuses on seasonal ingredients from Otago and the broader South Island, offering dishes like Wakanui Canterbury Scotch fillet paired with local wines.
My review is long overdue to say the least but my fine dining experience at the Press Club was nothing short of spectacular. From the food to the ambience that day it was truly a luxury food oasis I’ve attached some photos of what me and my partner had for the night and the food was giving “main character energy” for sure. I loved every bit of my experience there and the service we received was stellar. We had Tristan helping us out that evening and he was a ten outta ten minus nothing ! To this day I remember him rent free. The music was also so good which contributed so well to the ambience of the evening. The drinks went down quite well too. I highly actually above highly recommend a visit to the Press Club . You won’t regret it

We came here for our wedding anniversary. Food was lovely (the risotto was delightful, the ribeye was slightly dry for my taste), the drinks were nice especially all the gin-based ones. Service was prompt although I do wish the staff had put more of a personal /celebratory touch to the meal. Overall it's still a lovely restaurant to visit

Have had a recent surprise baby shower for a dear friend last month and a number of book club high teas. Love the food, service and atmosphere! I have recommended it to a group of friends and will be taking another set of friends this Sunday. Honestly very excited for them to experience your high tea (which in my opinion is the best in Dunedin x)
Chibon C — Google review
Food was honestly mediocre for the price paid. The venison rack being the 2nd most expensive main ($51) was extremely disappointing to say the least. Was rather hopeful for it but was a big miss - dry and flavours of the sauces dont even complement it. Don't even get me started on the seasonal vegetables.. $14 and one look anyone can tell its made from frozen vegetables 😔 purely just for fibre intake if you ask me. And how dare they call it seasonal if its avail all year round ie frozen?? The only decent dish we tried was the seared scallop and pork belly. Flavourful enough which I rather enjoyed, hence the 3 stars. Came on a Sun night with reservations, but it was so quite empty that one can do without it. I guess the food and price explains for why the crowds ain't here. Or maybe because its a Sunday night. Overall not so value for money.

This was a top quality dinner in the heart of Dunedin. We booked via a phone call the night before, and the team were very flexible. There was a young waiter who explained the menu beautifully and eloquently and rightly deserves an individual mention in this post. All were attentive and service was fast. We started with the soy chicken which we shared, tender and flavoursome. Followed by the Mount Cook salmon and the scotch beef fillet, both were divine. The flavours matched well and the food was warm and tasty. The wines on offer were great, with a solid alcohol free selection. We finished with the chef’s trio of desserts, this was a lovely mixture of raspberry slice, chocolate mousse and an amazing chocolate salted caramel brownie. Cannot recommend this eatery enough!

We have been wanting to try this place for sometime now. Have had the opportunity to have an odd coffee before and the place looks fairly good. A lot of effort has been made setting up this flash restaurant. As usual, it was apparent that they were under staffed. The young waitress was all smiles and a little talent. The manager was a bit stand off ish or a dude with a sense of humour that none of us understood. The meals were super pricy and then it raises the expectations a little bit. Our steak was $51 and was served fairly cold and cut into two. It was generously served with a tiny skinny carrot and a stick of asparagus. Not impressed at all. The steak was well cooked though to our liking. Chips were luke warm too. The salmon was beautiful but the Israeli cous cous was a mismatch. Risotto was rich and creamy and tasted good. Vension was definitely the pick of the lot served with mash. We were in Xmas spirits and had à great time laughing and sharing jokes. We thought the music was very low and it was awkward to have a decent conversation without the neighbouring tables listening to our stories. It all came to an abrupt end when the manager decide to plonk the bill on the table stating they were ready to close. Really, it is not even 10 and we are in a so called 5 star hotel. I get really worried for the industry and the owners who run the show. Covid, lock downs, lack of staff and the economical reasons to keep operating offering little service. Good luck guys. We spent more than $100 per guest and it was certainly no where closer to average.
Raunaq B — Google review
Had a wonderful dinner at the Press Club! The mains were executed beautifully and the flavours were superb (lamb dish and beef burger). Didn’t need extra sauces and condiments to pair with the food, which was great. Clean and tasty. The only reason I gave 4/5 is because I wasn’t informed that there will be a $20 charge for bringing a cake… I could have tried another appetiser or dessert 😋 and save the cake for later at home.

Saint Clair Beach is a popular destination in Dunedin, known for its sandy shores and excellent surfing opportunities. The beach is backed by a lively promenade featuring seafood restaurants and bars. It is the closest beach to the city and is often frequented by various wildlife such as seals, penguins, sea lions, and occasionally sharks. Visitors can enjoy walking along the dunes or strolling along John Wilson Drive while taking in the stunning views.
One of the best free third space areas in Dunedin, perfect for contemplation. The vast stretch of sand, the rhythmic sound of waves, and the endless horizon create a natural meditation space. The best time, in my opinion, is from sunset until the last bus departure from the nearby bus stop. The fading light, the cool ocean breeze, and the quiet atmosphere as the day winds down make it the perfect moment to just exist, with nothing but the sound of the waves and the distant glow of city lights. With a row of cafés along the esplanade, Saint Clair offers the perfect blend of serenity and comfort. Whether it’s an aimless stroll, sitting quietly in the ocean breeze, or watching surfers ride the waves, this place always gives the mind room to breathe.

PERFECT, having family in dunedin. It was super nice having a few nights here. We got a family until so two beds rooms, kitchen, lounge and bathroom. Would happily stay here for a few weeks. Great kids play area and a short walk to a dinosaur play ground. Always will be a number one pick in Dunedin. I remember staying here on family holidays as a kid, and its upgraded without changing the wonderful family friendly experience. Also has a dairy a just by reception on the road. Perfect for a quick milk run or a nice hot pie

A nice stay here, the cabins are a bit dated and only heated by a small fan heater on the wall. Good friendly service, nice secure facilities with everything you need. Access to the beach via a sports field is a 5-10 min walk. Nice feed of fish n chips from the shop behind reception.

We had a powered site for two nights (early October 2025). The bathrooms are very clean & tidy (plenty of toilets and showers). And there's a large kitchen, with a seated dining area. The hosts are very nice. Oh, the location is just behind the beach. And the caravan park is perfectly located = short 8min drive to the city (easiest parking for motorhomes is directly across the train tracks, from the Dunedin train station). It's a quick walk up over the tracks to access the train station AND the city centre. And 30min north-east of the caravan park is the Albatross Centre (worth going to). There's a "coastal route" and a "plateau route" = both are the MOST scenic drives you shall ever do in your life.

What a brilliant place. There are amazing pieces of wall art on most walls which tell of History and place names and pretty much anything you can think of. It was very, very cold, minus 6c one morning but warmed up a bit by lunch time. Thank goodness for good heating in the caravan.

We have used Dunedin Holiday Park many times over the years, it's a good location, buses are handy. The Park is in badly need now of an update, the basic cabin was really basic, drafty windows and door rattled all night, toilets were reasonably clean, kitchen jobs some worked, 4 toasters 2 worked, no tea towels or dish cloths, basic utensils pots and pans, although the day we left t towels and dish cloths had appeared. A bit of money spent on the whole premises and upgrade, would return it to how it was, as it is in a good spot.

Can't use the kitchen after 9. Some people only get to the campsite around 8pm, we didn't get here until 8.45, so what are we paying for? We could have stayed in a free camp. The reason we came was to make tea and have a nice dinner. I can't even make a hot water bottle to keep me warm for the night. Never stayed in a camping where you have nowhere to sit down after 9pm other than your own vehicle.

We stayed in a powered site for 1 night 9/9/25. We had a friendly greeting when we arrived. The park could do with some money being spent on it. Lawns were longer just not manicured like other parks we have been in. Toilet block tidy but tired. The dark passage way to the toilets need lighting up at night. The camp kitchen was large but had a horrible smell. Great location but in need of a major update

When visiting the Otago Peninsula in Dunedin, make sure to include the Blue Penguins Pukekura Experience Tour in your itinerary. This tour offers a unique opportunity to witness little blue penguins waddling onto shore at Pilots Beach as the sun sets. The experience begins at the Royal Albatross Centre, where you can explore exhibitions before being introduced to the penguins and heading to a viewing platform to watch them return to their colony.
The guides were really knowledgeable and friendly. Managed to see a large raft of penguins come up onto the shore and it was very magical. Lots of space to view the penguins and they encourage people to swap around so everyone gets a view from the different angles. They have a cart down at the viewing deck where they sold soup and hot drinks which was nice to warm up with.

They are ridiculously CUTE! We did the 6 pm time in September. It starts off with you learning about penguins inside before going for a short walk to see the penguins. There were so many!!! Probably my favorite thing I’ve done in all of New Zealand. Absolutely wonderful and adorable!

This experience was a lovely way to spend the day. Ben and Becky did a really great job of guiding us through our kayaking trip and then the penguin viewing. Knowledgeable, happy to help, and enthusiastic. Which is everything you want from a guide. We even got to hand feed some lambs which was an unexpected surprise.

I had a fantastic time at Blue Penguins Pukekura! The team was absolutely wonderful – friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what they do. The highlight, of course, was seeing hundreds of little blue penguins up close in their natural environment – such a magical and memorable experience. This is a must-do if you're in the area. Highly recommend – A+!

Wonderful evening viewing the penguins waddle up onto the beach and into their habitats. The talk at the beginning gave you insight into the area and what to expect. We had an early dinner at the cafe which was great. All staff were amazing, friendly and extremely helpful. Thank you. Recommended xx ❤️❤️

We did the extended tour with Sian yesterday and it was absolutely amazing! She is incredibly knowledgeable and a lovely person to boot, so we had a great time with her. Then, after a short and refreshing talk by Leon, we were lead to the viewing platform - it took about five minutes for the first little penguins to arrive! After that they trickled in and we saw them walk around, some eve very close to people! This was, so far, one of our favorite things to do on the South Island. If you want to help out with amazing conservationist work - do come here. You will not be disappointed!

A great experience for anyone interested in wildlife, conservation, and the chance to see little blue penguins up close in their natural environment, in a respectful and eco-friendly way! The Blue Penguins Pukekura tour is well-organised and focused on protecting the penguins’ habitat. It begins indoors with an introduction to the penguins, their behaviour, local Māori culture, and the natural history of the Otago Peninsula. This context makes the outdoor part more meaningful. The outdoor viewing area is carefully designed to minimise disturbance, and we were lucky to see many penguins return from the sea at dusk. Throughout the evening, our three knowledgeable guides shared interesting information and answered questions! Highly recommended!

Wow. Fully exceeded my expectations. Very knowledgeable staff, and very clear respect for the birds and focus on tiaki and conservation. We saw a lot of penguins and it was magical to watch them come to shore. The night sky out there was also beautiful.

Nestled in a charming heritage building, the Leviathan Hotel offers a delightful blend of history and comfort right next to Queens Garden and just a stone's throw from The Octagon in Dunedin. This budget-friendly hotel caters to various travelers with its range of accommodations, including private rooms for singles, doubles, twins, and triples as well as backpacker dorms. For those seeking a touch more luxury, the Standard Rooms or Suites featuring spa baths are perfect options.
Great location. Staff at reception were hit and miss depending on who it was. Some were friendly, some not so much. Rooms were OK. Clean and warm. Great for solo or working individuals, not so much for families.

My family stayed there for 3 nights. Upon arriving from a long trip late at night, I went to talk to the receptionist and asked if we could borrow plates and spoons. He let us go to the pantry of the workers, but when we went back and asked again for proper utensils, he was hesitant and rude, saying that we should return them after using them. He guided us to the kitchen/buffet area where the utensils were stored. He also implied that we couldn't afford to buy meals. I don't know what he meant by that, but he was being rude, and I felt he was being racist. He told us that this is a hotel, not a motel. By the way, the room where we stayed was very disappointing. I don't mind staying in an old room as long as it is clean, but it was not. The walls were dirty, as well as the ceiling. The carpet was too old and needs to be replaced. The toilet area was moldy, and my kids complained that the blanket was itchy, which likely means it wasn't clean or dusty and possibly had bed mites. The elevator was a risk hazard since it do close quickly. Receptionists are not hospitable; there are no greetings or anything of the sort, as it should be. I will not recommend this to my family or to whomever I know. If there's a negative rating for this, I would rate it as negative 3.

Decent budget option if you're just looking for a place to sleep. It's very affordable and located right in the middle of the city, which is convenient. That said, the hotel is quite old and could really use some updates. Some areas had a bit of a smell, which wasn’t ideal. Overall, you get what you pay for-okay for a short stay if you're not too fussy.
Suren ( — Google review
The receptionist was lovely and helped me with my suitcases and explained places to visit in town. It was quite an eerie hotel with a lot of old fashion furniture and creaking floorboards. The beds were very comfortable but the rooms could do with a bit of upgrading.
Hannah R — Google review
Lady at the front counter was absolutely no help. Gave me key, told my room number, but not how to find it, and expected me to know where to go (other people had same opinion too, as I showed them where their room was) Website and welcome board, state evening meals are available. Which i was relying on with a 4yro. I asked about meals, she said theyre not done on weekends - and I pointed out welcome board & she replied 'they should probably change that'. Disappointing to be fair. No laundry use between 10pm & 8am - yet 10.30pm people are banging and crashing in there which was next to my room, waking my little one. First and Last experience at the Leviathan Hotel

Pillows lumpy, aswell beds, have obviously never been replaced. Shower curtain covered in mold, shower head designed for anyone under 5’4. Pressure average. Place smelt bad. Jugs again have obviously never been replaced, was scared to put water in it. Nice design if it was 1922. Not worth the cost to stay.

My room was 241. It was clean and cosy. My husband and I were passing through and chose this location based on its late check in option. We got in at 9pm. I found the location perfect. See video if able to. The view was gorgeous. I found the whole building reminiscent of The shining lol. (It’s a horror movie taken from a book). I pondered if it was once a hospital, or maybe a motel for old soldiers. It is a heritage building. Very charming and very thought stirring. I went for an unauthorised walk before I left and found a room with a wall of alcohol minis. They look old as. Cool as too. I loved my stay.

On Top Backpackers is a budget-friendly hostel in the heart of Dunedin, perfect for adult travelers seeking a relaxed atmosphere. The hostel offers simple dorms and rooms, with breakfast included and a lively cafe/bar on-site. Its central location provides easy access to shops and nightlife, while being just one floor above The Poolhouse Bar & Cafe adds convenience for entertainment. Although the sanitation may not be top-notch, the spaciousness of the hostel makes up for it.
I stayed in a 6 bed dorm and I really liked it. It's very clean, you have a nice kitchen with free continental breakfast and free coffee and tea all the time. There is a small salon to spend time and a billar bar downstairs. The common toilets are pretty ok, but you have to pay extra for towels and there is no shampoo. The hostel is right in the city and the emplacement is very quiet. The only thing is that there are no lockers/storage space in the room and everything is located in a second floor, so no so easy access if you have heavy luggage, but in general I do recommend it 👌🏻

Nice hostel! Really well located in the city, close to everything. The beds were okay, classic bunk-bed that the moment someone move everything move haha! One small thing in the room that i had was that I had windows up to the ceiling with no curtains so make sure you have an eyes mask. Very clean hostel and kitchen have everything. Staff were super nice too. A good stay in general for my stay of 3 nights.

I stayed here for one night when I was in Dunedin. The check-in time is from 2 PM, and I arrived a little earlier, but they had a service to store my luggage, so I was able to leave my bags and go explore the city. The room, toilet, and shower were all very clean and tidy. I was planning to leave early the next morning, so I tried to sleep early, but since my room was right next to the kitchen and living room, I could hear quite a bit of noise, which made it difficult to fall asleep. However, if noise isn’t an issue for you, I think it would be a much more comfortable stay!

These are some exchange of communications between me and On Top Backpackers: 1. On Top Backpackers Hello Guest, We did not receive the key card upon departure. This has incurred a $5 card replacement fee charged to the card provided. If you can return the key card, please do so and we will happily refund. We hope you enjoyed your stay in Dunedin and all the best for your future travels - On Top Hostel A. Mine Hi, I put the keycard on the grey box and put my pillow case in the chair on the morning of yesterday *Satuday) as I decided not to stay in your place for another night . Please send me an email so I can send photos and a video of me putting the card in the grey box and the pillow case in the chair. I was unable to sleep on my first night as my roommates and the people outside were very noisy up until unholy hours . I decided not to complain as it was a waste of my time and energy. Also, the key card was not properly working on all doors. Even my roommates had the same problem. The women's restroom were flooded when I arrived, and no one cleaned them the next day. So please send me an email for me to send proof that I left the keycard and pillowcase as instructed. I actually want a refund, but as I have mentioned that it is a waste of time and energy to complain, especially since there's no one at the reception when I decided to leave. Thank you. B. On Top Backpackers Good morning, Would be helpful to notify staff if you decide not to stay for the entirety of your stay to avoid confusion such as this as you are still accounted for on the system :) definitely worth the energy letting us know then instead of now, it is important for management to be aware of any disturbances - if we do not know, we of course cannot do anything about it. We did not receive any noise complaints from anyone this weekend. We give you an urgent contact number to call any time after hours in case of unfortunate disrespectful guests of which we can encounter from time to time in Backpackers especially on the weekends! Our night watch lives onsite 24/7 and can take care of this for you so you can get a restful sleep. Reception is not 24 hours. The hours are stated upon your welcome note. You have from 10am - 10pm to approach staff within On Top or again call us anytime :) If you can please just advise me of the time of your chosen departure yesterday so I can check our CCTV camera to confirm check out process completed and then will immediately refund your $5 back to card provided. Please bring any issues to the attention of management whilst at the property in future so we can help make your stay the best, most comfortable one whilst here. We cannot do anything once you have departed. Our intention is to provide a great stay not a miserable one, however we do not know it is miserable if you just leave without communication. Cheers :) B. Mine Thank you for your reply. I know where you're coming from, and I hope you understand that not all people want confrontation and / or arguments. I had a very tough few weeks before staying at On Top, so complaining was the last thing on my mind. Kindly check the time stamp at 7:14 am. yesterday, as that is the time I took the video of me dropping the keycard in the grey box. I would appreciate it if you could refund the $5. C. On Top Appreciate the understanding. Being a Hostel, as you can imagine within shared facilities there are always issues that are constant and unavoidable. Our staff work tireless, 12 hour shifts daily to maintain cleanliness and deal with these encounters so when we get told of a negative experience afterwards it is very disheartening. We truly welcome the feedback so we can fix any complaints immediately, otherwise all the hard work just goes to waste. I hope you have a better coming week; I was able to refund you $25 to acknowledge your unfortunate experience here at On Top. I hope this validates the effort of expressing your concerns and shows management are willing to do what we can to turn an unpleasant time into a memorable one!

I spent a few nights here solo in a mixed 8 person dorm, and overall, it was fairly good, especially for the price. The rooms were clean and the bedding was suitable and comfortable/warm enough. However, the dorm-type room I was in did not have any lockers or extra space for luggage (there is provided secure storage, but it is only accessible when staff are around after 10am), besides the room itself and under the beds. There were also no tables inside the dorm rooms. There was one shared toilet room for multiple dorm-style rooms, and a large room containing multiple shower cubicles for everyone across the facility, and in general, these were fine. There was also a common kitchen and lounge area with tables, fridges, games, and kitchenware/other equipment, as well as the pool area and bar below the backpackers itself. I valued the free breakfast and free WiFi, and when I requested to change room due to noise, they handled the request smoothly, and in general, check-in and check-out were also smooth. There were a few leaks around the premises, but these were not too big of an issue, and the cleanliness overall was satisfactory. I do recommend bringing your own towel and soap, as they are not provided for free. I did not use the laundry service, so cannot comment on it. The parking around the backpackers is generally paid, and there is a council-controlled carpark right next to the hostel. There are also a few events mainly associated with the bar and pool area, but I did not participate in them, and in general, the atmosphere was chill, with a bit of socialisation depending on the people.

Two charging stations for 8 people in the dorm. No hair dryer, no curtains, stupid design for the stairs to climb up to the upper bunker so people will step on your bed all the time, loud music etc This place is trash

Monarch Wildlife Cruises & Tours offers boat tours around the Otago Peninsula, providing an opportunity to spot Southern Ocean wildlife such as fur seals and penguins. The area is renowned for its eco-tourism, described by Dr. David Bellamy as the finest example in the world. With departures from Wellers Wharf, visitors can embark on a one-hour cruise to marvel at the wonders of this magnificent region.
We visited Dunedin for a few days and will be back in a couple weeks on our way back through. For our first day in Dunedin we did the Peninsula Encounters + Albatross Tour with Danny who was an excellent guide who very truly cared about the wildlife. This is so important to have tour companies that want to create a good experience for people but protect the wildlife first. So very impressed with the professionalism and the knowledge he shared. We didn't get to see wild yellow penguins but the Blue penguins were peeking at us from their little houses and was a great experience. We also asked Danny for some ideas of other things to do on our other days and he gave some great ideas that we were able to follow through with.
Nicole — Google review
Just finished our tour with Monarch. We did the encounters and wildlife cruise tour. Our guide was Will and he was absolutely incredible - so knowledgeable about the wildlife but also about the Māori and European history of Dunedin and Otago. We saw sea lions, fur seals, albatrosses, little blue penguins, yellow eyed penguins, and heaps of other sea birds. Would recommend this to everyone visiting the area.
Dan B — Google review
I highly recommend doing the peninsula tour and the wildlife cruise, we did this tour yesterday with Will and he was absolutely amazing at his job and you could tell how much he enjoyed his job and was extremely knowledgeable. We saw so many amazing animals and he was always chatting and having a laugh with everyone on our tour. I genuinely could not recommend this tour more.
Tara W — Google review
Absolutely fantastic experience. We had Buddy as our guide, and he did an incredible job. A.J. was also a wonderful host. She was incredibly friendly and helpful. The tour itself was excellent. The view of the wildlife (particularly the Albatross) was spectacular. I cannot recommend this enough!

I booked the Castle + cruise tour from Dunedin. My tour guide was Rob and it was one of the best tours I have ever had. Rob was very knowledgeable about the history of the castle, the history of the family who owned it and the grounds. The cruise was a very nice experience as well, so I highly recommend this tour.
Elodie E — Google review
Excellent! We were picked at our hotel and driven up the peninsula to board the boat for the wildlife spotting. We hadn’t even finished the safety briefing when my wife spotted a Blue Penguin. We left the estuary briefly as the sea was really choppy but had the chance to see a sea lion, several fur seals and three types of albatross. We could also clearly see the young albatross on the headland waiting for food. On the way back into the estuary we saw a “raft” of about 10 more penguins. Our tour included a return to Dunedin harbour, and we were the only two passengers so enjoyed a private lesson from the marine biologist on board. We were also treated to a fly by from another albatross which stayed with us for ages!

We took the one hour wildlife cruise from Wellers Rock. The guide was very knowledgeable about the birds and other wildlife, their lifecycle, nesting and lots of other information. We saw albatross, little penguins and a couple of seals. They have jackets and binoculars that you can use. Great cruise, really enjoyed it.

What an amazing tour. We saw lots of different birds, including the beautiful Albatross. We also saw seals, yellow eyed penguins and even a humpback whale. The crew were so nice and helpful. Highly recommend.

It was good value for money, in a great spot, with excellent service. Bed was good; wifi was very good. Only issues for me were the thin walls, and could have used a small fridge in the room. Otherwise, a very good stay.

Had the most wonderful stay at their bed and breakfast. The room was great and they really went above and beyond to make sure everything was taken care of. Regular fresh towels, bed changed, even came home to a new lazy boy recliner chair one day which was a nice surprise. They also have a cute Schnauzer puppy that you can pet if he’s around!

Julie and Mike are extraordinary people. We visited from the US in May 2023. While we were staying there, I became ill. Julie immediately moved us to the quiet motel part of the grounds where we remained for ten days. It was quiet, comfortable and clean. Julie was always checking in on us, making sure we had everything we needed. She even took me to the grocery store when I felt better. Great rooms, spacious and modern. Great showers (pressure and temp) and beds. Awesome owners - Donna and Barry. We rocked up on a Friday with no booking in winter which generally would not be an issue except that the All Blacks were in town to play France. We were fortunate to get their last room which suited us perfectly. Donna and Barry were very helpful and super lovely. Even helped us find a place for the next night when we were able to get tickets for the football. And left them a message to say we had left a couple of things behind. Will only ever stay here on future visits to Dunedin.

My husband & I have had the privilege of staying at the Bella Vista Motel 2 times in the last month & honestly I can definitely say, it is such a lovely place! And I definitely recommend it! I am so very thankful because travelling to Dunedin with our 7 month old son, being able to stay at such a high quality, safe & beautiful motel was soo nice! Great service, lovely people (& dog) and so close to everything you need (walking distance) I have no concerns of the place other than being surprised it isn’t always fully booked because honestly, it is such a lovely place! Thank you so much for a lovely stay and for being so accommodating! Will definitely visit again, no doubt :)

Absolutely lovely. I have stayed in 2 rooms so far and both were amazing. The Pet Friendly add is a bless. The hosts are extremely well coming. It is clean, and has everything you need.

This Bella Vista met the standard I’ve come to enjoy about this hotel chain. Comfy bed. Variety of pillows. An extra fluffy warm blanket available. Desk. Small kitchenette (fridge, microwave, kettle). And en-suite. Best of where it is located there are several takeaway/fast food options (McDonalds, KFC, burger fuel, Chinese, fish n chips, Thai). The hosts are lovely and have a most friendly little dog to welcome all. They also acknowledged that they are located on a main road (the main road heading south out of Dunedin)and provided ear plugs. But I found the room was sufficiently sound proof-ish for me.

Quiet, despite being on the main road. Enjoyed walking the owners dog. We were there to witness a court case from the public gallery. We didn't know how long we would be there. The owners were flexible about the number of nights that we needed to stay. They would have allowed us to bring our cockatiel if we hadn't find a carer for him.

This delightful hotel features 18 self-contained units, including stylish bi-level suites that boast high ceilings and chic kitchenettes. Guests can enjoy the airy ambiance created by large windows adorned with elegant roman blinds, making it feel more like a trendy suburban retreat than a typical motel.
The apartments are beautifully designed, well-equipped, and nicely presented. Just a short walk away we found plenty of takeaway options and a supermarket, making it perfect for both short and longer stays. Mao was incredibly kind and went out of their way to return an item we had accidentally left behind. A truly lovely place with equally lovely people.

I did a booking for the following day but while in the process it changed it to the current day. Even after straight away contacting the booking provider and later directly calling the hotel I was faced with a stonefaced unmoved non refundable or booking changeable attitude. Caused me a lot of stress. Receptionist just hung up on me during the call. Do not recommend.

Quick one night stay. Nice and close to supermarket some bars, cafes, restaurants. Large two bedroom apartment. Bedrooms both upstairs. Great value for money.

The owners were friendly and assisted us when needed. The parking for a ute is extremely tight and difficult. Cleaners neglected to do their jobs properly only changing the bin during our stay. We had to go and get new fresh towels because the cleaners did not change these. We raised the issue with Jenny and she was happy to have a chat with the cleaners and provided us fresh new towels. The information book said that they did breakfast but when we asked about breakfast we were told they don't do it. There information booklet needs to be updated to the relevant information as it's misleading. Beware of the orange cat as he seems friendly but he is a gremlin in disguise. There wasn't a high standard of cleanliness in the room as we found multiple stains on the bedding when first arriving.
Penny M — Google review
The room is decent, and the heating is very sufficient. However, there are very few parking spaces, and it's a hassle always having to move the car.

This Motel had everything you could want for a stay and more. I usually sleep with a fan and even a fan was provided. I requested a ground floor studio unit and everything was clean and inviting. The shower was great and the toiletries provided plentiful. Great stay. Definitely recommend this property.

We enjoyed a 2 night stay at the Palms Dunedin. Great location, lovely apartment with separate bedroom, fantastic. Clean and very comfortable. Great hosts too. Thankyou

A great place to stay. Hosts were friendly and helpful. Even putting our bags away somewhere safe in the a.m while we traveled around. Rooms were very spacious and clean. Stove top cooking and a dishwasher available. Electric blankets on all beds. T.V in all rooms. Close to town and many facilities. Highly recommend.

Pro's: Good location walking distance to city centre Con's: Rooms are very dated, furniture extremely worn, bed soft / saggy, seat on toilet loose and slips around. In addition to this there was no soap for shower (not even a pump both pumps in shower had conditioner), no milk provided and very loud pipe water noises throughout day & night from other rooms
Cat S — Google review
Stayed here often as its always clean and rooms are a good size. Parking is available on site and if you dont have a car its an easy 5 minute walk and you are smack bang in town. Nice to have the complimentary biscuits too.

Beautifully clean rooms, the toilet as well! I was so happy staying here. For the price, it is beyond amazing! I stayed in scenic hotel the last time I came to Dunedin, and it didn’t even have an AC! This motel has every single amenity you need for a beautiful stay. I cannot recommend enough! Value for money and super comfortable. Can easily fit a family of 5.

Extremely friendly staff... gets five stars for that alone especially when I lost my key! Clean and tidy... only issue is that because it's a bit older there are not many wall plugs in the bedrooms. Otherwise a great place!

Had a girls road trip to Dunedin and stayed at Owens Motel unit 1. Very easy to locate, and excellent location. A little musty, but very clean, warm and comfortable. Had everything anyone could need. They were very helpful in giving us a downstairs unit. It's an older motel, but excellent. And the price was amazing.

Best service in town. Quality, price, and fitting services are all exceptional. They generally have my suits done within a day or two, short of Christmas, when they are understandably very busy. 10/10 - wouldn’t trust my suits with anyone else.

Left review saying zip repair was too expensive (told me it costs $65 whereas other place offered me $28) and received call from this shop saying I should delete the comment and also I can pickup my cloth if I’m not happy about the price which I said yes to. After next day I went to pickup my cloth and they gave my cloth back but my cloth was ruined. They gave me such a poor repair that they told me it’s done for free (I never asked). It ruined my cloth and now I have to pay extra to get rid of this from another shop + zip repair. Honestly it was nice that u guys wanted to fixing it for free (but without asking me first) after I wasn’t happy about the price and left review, but this isn’t properly fixed (just saw some tape on it) and made it worse that now I have to pay extra to get rid off.

Beechwood's accommodation was one of my best experiences in central Dunedin! I stayed in the single-person studio, which is tastefully designed with a well-planned layout. It’s a cozy retreat after a day of workshops or exploring the city, with everything you need. The kitchenette is simple yet functional, the shower room has adequate heating, and the space is well-aired. The hosts are welcoming and communicative. I’ll definitely be back!

Had a really wonderful stay for 3 nights. Was in room 10, the sunniest spot in the motel. It was very warm, comfortable, and felt like a second home. Well furnished amenities - heat pump, underfloor heating, hot showers with two heads, fully equipped kitchen, a very comfortable couch and bed. We couldn't have asked for better. Will certainly be recommending and would definitely consider booking again. Staff were also very welcoming and helpful.

This place was beautiful. It was clean and not out dated. Staff was nice and friendly The only down fall was the heating. We would of liked coming into a warm room specifically on the cold wet day we arrived. And leave the heating on so when we come back its still warm. Heatpump done a good job. Overall perfect. Catherine S — Google review
Can I give the location more than 5 stars? Seriously, this apartment is one of the best choices we made while planning our 3 week trip around the South Island. We stayed in a 1-bedroom apartment that has a full kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and separate dining/tv room. It’s just perfect for my husband and I. Also a comfy bed, and well equipped kitchen. The apartment is on the chilly side, but there are space heaters and a heating pad on the bed! It’s lovely! The WiFi is great, and there are plenty of good restaurants all around. We tried The Esplanade the night we arrived, and it was really good food! The kitchen has allowed us to cook breakfasts before we head out each day. Parking is on the street and most times hard to find nearby, but we learned that once the restaurant closes we can move the car closer. Katherine (owner/manager) has been wonderful to communicate with, and made things easy for us to check in late. Even left us the most delicious bottle of fresh full cream milk and cheese n crackers in the refrigerator for our arrival! There is also access to a washer and dryer, which was appreciated while traveling for so many days. Ok I left the best part for last. This apartment is across the street from St Clair beach, and the views from the bedroom and tv room are simply spectacular! Walk out the door and the esplanade is 10 steps away. St Clair is a gorgeous strip of long sandy beach. Surfers are out every day (Kiwi are pretty weather-proof) and while walking the beach yesterday I almost walked into 2 sea lions napping! Loving every minute of our stay in Dunedin! Highly recommend this place, and we hope to come back here again!

Thanks for having us. Perfect spot for our family. We loved staying right on the beach, with sunrise coffees and hot chocolates from the cafes below. Very well equiped for young children with books, cot, extra bedding and towels, laundry. Sorry about all of the small fingerprints on the windows!

We stayed in Apartment 2 which had an amazing view over the Esplanade to the ocean. Just magic! Rooms were great. Very clean. The whole apartment has been modernised and the kitchen & bathroom were nice. Beds were super comfortable. Appreciated the welcome message and cheese & crackers. The apartment is above a bar and we were happy that we couldn't hear the noise downstairs.

Stayed for a weekend with extended family in the 3 bedroom apartment, it was an excellent facility and very well equipped. Kitchen was very well equipped for cooking for a group and also well stocked with tea, coffee etc. Bathroom also well stocked with everything you might need or forget to pack. Beds very comfy, and plenty of seating in living rooms.

The best location in Dunedin. The apartment is so comfortable and the views are just phenomenal. Check in and out is a breeze. Great for families as there is loads of space. The roof terrace is such an asset. We really appreciated the little touches like cheese and crackers and toiletries. My daughter left some jewelry there and their wonderful cleaner called me within an hour so I was able to retrieve it. Great restaurants around it and the views from Long Dog for breakfast can’t be beaten.

What a fabulous wee place. I came to Dunedin for study and stayed here for three nights. The room was a great size and really well set out. The shower was AMAZING, possibly best I have ever had!! The bed was super comfortable. The bathroom had a heated floor which was nice. The unit was lovely and warm. Parking was available. Nightly rates were good. The place was just wonderful. I would definitely stay again.

Nicely appointed apartment, located away from Dunedin but still an easy drive to the city centre. Very clean and quiet, the only disappointment was the small towels.
Kim O — Google review
We stayed at Superior Dunedin Apartments during our recent visit to the city and were genuinely impressed. The apartment was modern, clean, and very well-maintained. Everything from the layout to the furnishings felt thoughtfully designed. The bed was large and extremely comfortable, and we appreciated the extra touches like quality linens and a fully equipped kitchen. The apartment had all the conveniences of home—washer/dryer, good heating, fast Wi-Fi, and even Netflix on the smart TV, which was perfect for a relaxing evening. We also really liked how quiet it was despite being close to the city centre. The location is ideal—just a short walk or drive to supermarkets, cafes, and Dunedin’s main attractions like the Octagon and Botanical Gardens. Free parking on-site made things even easier. Check-in was smooth with clear instructions provided in advance. We didn’t need to contact staff much, but when we did, they were friendly and quick to respond. Overall, this is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a comfortable, self-contained stay in Dunedin. Whether you’re here for a short visit or a longer stay, Superior Dunedin Apartments truly lives up to its name.

My partner and I stayed there when we came down for my grandmothers funeral. The room was nice and clean. Checking in and out was easy too. If I had one suggestion, it would be to have a few different thickness pillows - ours were a bit thin.

This apartment building boasts an unbeatable location with a breathtaking direct sea view. The panoramic vistas are priceless and invite you to linger. The renovated rooms are modern and appealingly designed. However, the windows leave much to be desired. They offer little to no soundproofing, resulting in significant noise disturbances. Those sensitive to noise should steer clear of this apartment building. The surf is very loud at night and can severely disrupt sleep. Additionally, cars drive by late into the night searching for parking spaces right in front of the rooms, further adding to the noise level. A definite highlight is the two restaurants located nearby. Both offer excellent cuisine and are well worth a visit.

What a wonderful place to stay with your family. We stayed in the two bed apartment. Great beds, excellent linen, clean and beautiful view watching sea lions ride waves. The Stables Dunedin offers a unique boutique studio hotel experience in a heritage building dating back to 1879. The old-world charm is evident with exposed brick walls and timber beams, while the modernized studios feature fully tiled walk-in showers, desks or kitchenettes. The rooms are beautifully renovated and thoughtfully designed with digital entry, making keys unnecessary. While the rooms may be on the smaller side, they are clean and well-equipped with ample storage space.
Very nice, clean and quiet. We stayed with our two school aged children and were very comfortable. Close to town but also tucked away and felt private.

We have both traveled extensively all over the world, and this is one of the better places we've stayed. Beautiful building, nice warm room, very clean, quiet, and well maintained. Up a very steep hill, but only five minutes from town. We would definitely recommend The Stables to anyone looking for a quality retreat.
Case W — Google review
Beautifully and thoughtfully renovated room. Very clean, shower is a dream. Overhead and table side reading lamps a nice touch. Digital entry means no keys required. Rooms a little small but served the purpose - wardrobe and cupboards for clothes, however wouldn’t suggest for long stays as no break out area. Heaps of off street parking. Located centrally and 5 minute walk into shopping/eating areas but up a steep hill, so walking shoes a must! Kettle and toaster, starter milk, coffee, tea, shampoo, soaps all provided. Towels thick and lush. Did not realise the downstairs utility area was available for guests until I read these reviews! There is another house on the lot which looks like it might be a (rundown) hostel of some kind?
Island N — Google review
Really enjoyed our stay. Modern fit out that has been really well thought through and designed. Clean. Great shower. Parking. Separate kitchen facility downstairs with tea and coffee in the room. Great location. Walk into town but plenty of good cafes 5 minutes away. Room is compact but I still had room to do my yoga 🙏

Very decent stay. The rooms meet all the standards I would expect for sure. I have recently had a major surgery so was very difficult getting in and out of room 7. Nestled in the heart of Dunedin, Chapel Apartments offers a truly distinctive lodging experience within the walls of a historic church dating back to 1863. This unique accommodation features seven elegantly furnished apartments that beautifully blend historical charm with modern amenities. Guests can enjoy spacious living areas complete with large kitchens equipped with dishwashers, luxurious bathrooms featuring underfloor heating, and cozy lounges boasting flat-screen TVs.
These apartments are in central Dunedin and the location is fantastic. Walking distance to shopping on George St and all the fantastic architecture in the octagon. There is some off street parking but the owner will reimburse for any parking costs incurred if there isn't a space reserved for your room. The apartments are spacious with high ceilings and lots of big windows. I've stayed twice and would happily stay again.

Nicely positioned apartments, ours had 2 floors and pretty much everything we needed. Shame it didn't have breakfast tea or milk supplied. Luckily we were early enough to get ourselves some milk. Parking is on street or the car park opposite. Ended up with on street parking as the car park seemed to only cover until 06:00. Could be my misunderstanding.
Nick D — Google review
Nice clean apartment with no parking available. Parking seems a nightmare in Dunedin and the option for us was in in the car park opposite for $10 per 12 hours. Very clean and quirky but had some minor problems with the TV being over a heater causing it to cut out. Shower coming away from the wall. At this price we were expecting excellence but we got good.😊
Nick C — Google review
Great location in central Dunedin. Old chapel converted to apartments. Close to food outlets & shopping. Warm & comfortable. But no off street parking for us even though we understood we did have this. And website promises this. But only some apartments get one. A major disadvantage as we had a young baby. There is paid parking on street but not guaranteed availability. Free after 6 pm but luck of draw. There’s a parking building over the road but it shuts at 2 am. In spite of location and comfort I won’t return, because of the parking hassles.
Ralph C — Google review
The actual apartments are modern and functional so it is a big shame, that the manager we dealt with was no help to us at all and just didn’t care. I booked through an agent for two nights and on arrival no one was at the apartments so I called the number that was there only to be told that I had no booking and someone had cancelled it. Then went on to say she couldn’t fit us in because it was completely booked out‪ the following night ‬ as she had a big booking.  I had booked this over a year ago and paid in full. No one had cancelled it and my agent was totally confused as to what had happened. She said we could stay one night but we would have to pay, even though I explained we had already paid and that our agent will call her soon to see what has happened. It was getting late and We have kids and she couldn’t careless. We received a call from our agent saying she has agreed to give us a room, on arrival no one was there again just a key on the door to our apartment. And to top everything off we couldn’t get into our street as they blocked it off to asphalt the road, luckily enough the road works men were very helpful and guided us through.  But told us we couldn’t leave because of the fresh asphalt and we had the noise of road works all night, explains why she had no bookings that night. She clearly knew this was going to happen, I’m pretty sure she would have been notified. It’s ridiculous, we then had to drive another 3.5 hours to our next destination with minimal sleep.
C X — Google review
While it looks great on paper, our experience has been of poor maintenance, poor service, and extremely poor attitude. We spent two nights in apartment nr 2, despite what was advertised we had not Internet connection. The manager dealt with the issue in an extremely unpleasant way, first saying they were working on it, then hanging up on us, then promising a discount, but never giving it, bombarding us with calls, texts and emails for a while, and ultimately not fixing the issue anyway. No surprise as the problem is not the network quality in Dunedin, but the church stone walls that are too thick for the signal to go through. Overall, you could see that the place was great five years ago, but has been poorly maintained, the paint was pealing from the walls on the first floor, the carpets were threadbare, the electronics did not work, etc. We do not recommend.
Loyse B — Google review
Nice, moden, up market apartments. 2 room apartment was good. 3 room suite was fantastic. But two draw backs. One shower didn't work but the main concern was that we did not see a single staff member. It was all done by email and phone.

Nice place with comfortable rooms - but the heater upstairs only stays in for 10 minutes at a time, and the TV kept turning itself off. Also, the wireless internet dropped out a bit. The manager seemed nice too (though we only spoke to him over the phone).

Serviced accommodation
March Apartments and Extended Stay Dunedin offers clean, well-thought-out accommodations with a convenient location near Mercy Hospital. The off-street parking, quiet atmosphere, and self-entry service make it an ideal choice for those seeking privacy and ease of access. While the steep driveway may pose a challenge for some, the overall facilities are praised as being well-equipped and quiet. However, guests should be mindful of the check-in policy which includes late arrival fees after 8 pm.
Very clean room with complete facilities. Great service from Natalie and her team. Would love to come back.

Consisting of a modest complex of 2 floor apartments its location being about 2 km. from the town centre made it ideal for a quiet stay. Although parking was tight individual parking bays were assigned to the unit. We especially enjoyed the landscaping which was well done & well maintained. We took the studio unit which has a comfortable King sized bed, a small dining area & living room with an en-suite bathroom. Kitchen facilities were basic with no major cooking possible beyond a microwave & and a mini oven. The 'habaki' style hot plate was a nice added touch. The room did have basic kitchen utensils. The Studio unit didn’t come with a washing machine but the single & double bedroom units do. There was also a small balcony which I suspect catered to smokers. Nice base to move about for those who fancy peace & quiet for their nights.

March Apartments is amazing, Natalie does an amazing job and they make everything fabulous for us so my elderly father us comfortable but also my 3 year old

Even though I am here on work the service is excellent and the room are clean and large. Worth a stay

Nice clean rooms and good service.

The entrance of the apartment and parking slot were so narrow and tight. If you’re not used to it, or driving big car, I don’t recommend here. I stayed single room for two nights and bigger room for three nights. The bigger room had nice kitchen and wash & dry machine, but a single room didn’t have enough space for cooking. I haven’t met any staff while I was staying. The room was ready and key was in the room on the day I check-in, and I had drop off the key into a box when I check-out.

Had major surgery 1st Sept at Mercy Hospital and March Apartments are within a short distance of the hospital and it has good off street parking, is very quiet and private. Ideal!!

Great place to stay clean tidy well thought out layout. Only thing that isn't perfect is soundproofing could here other guests talking through the walls. We will definitely stay here again all the same

Self-catering accommodation
Canopy Camping Escapes - Road's End Cabin is a secluded and picturesque glamping cabin overlooking Dunedin's south coast. The cabin offers panoramic views, carefully designed facilities, and complete privacy for a peaceful retreat. Guests can enjoy the serene surroundings or explore nearby attractions such as Tunnel Beach and Brighton Beach. The well-equipped camp kitchen and outdoor dishwashing area provide a camping-like experience, while the wood-fired hot tub offers a unique way to unwind.
This was the most beautiful stay I have ever had. The hosts have thought of absolutely everything, oils and herbs for cooking, a welcome card, assortment of teas and chocolate fish, fresh eggs and juice in the fridge! The decor is beautiful, the robes were the softest we've ever worn, and the property itself took our breath away. A true slice of paradise, and somewhere I would visit time and time again. Thank you so much!
Tess H — Google review
Our stay was perfect in all ways. We arrived on a cool, wet day but the pre set fire quickly warmed the cabin. I appreciated the attention to details and cosy ambience. Highly recommended
Maike F — Google review
A magical setting for a brilliant little glamping cabin. Loved listening to the surf roll in, and the bird life in the mornings/evenings. Sunrise and sunset were special times indeed. The cabin has a beautiful camp kitchen set-up and is marvelously well equipped. Loved doing the dishes outdoors - it really did feel like camping. The views are stunning too with plenty of spots to sit and take it in with a glass in hand. The decor is tasteful and blends nicely with the outdoors - every thing you could need is provided with perhaps the exception of a hair dryer. There were some treats waiting for us on arrival, and lots of neat little extras like games to play if it was wet. The stars were next level especially when viewed from the epic steaming hot tub which was ready and waiting for us to jump into on arrival. Just a short drive from the CBD and close to amazing beaches to explore, we absolutely adored our stay and will be back.
