Gulangyu, also known as Gulang Island or Kulangsu, is a car-free islet off the coast of Xiamen in southeastern China. This UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts nearly one thousand historical buildings, including former European consulates and Chinese-inspired Art Deco mansions. The island's rich history dates back to the turn of the 20th century when it housed a thriving European community due to Xiamen's role as a gateway for traders and missionaries.
Beautiful island for a day trip in Xiamen, even better if stay overnight. No cars allowed on island, the only transportation are the 12 electric buggies.
Ai C — Google review
A little island 20 mins ferry away from Xiamen. Popular with locals and tourists. As one of the first port opened for commercial trading in the past, the island is scattered with lots of buildings architecture of western influence. Almost every building carries its own story. I feel like i am in an entire different world while i am there. The only damper is the commercialised streets with local street vendors selling touristy items.
Eve C — Google review
A peacefully place, only 10-15 minutes ferry journey. Be prepared to walk whole day through the history of conquering the island by many countries.
Md.Mahbubul A — Google review
Beautiful small island, with a lot of different kinds of trees and plants, piano and organ museum, gardens, small shops and restaurants, no traffic at all except electric golf carts. It is a pitty that swimming is forbiden due the strong current and riffs, the only thing that I strughled is hummidity but everything else was perfect!
Radmila J — Google review
Very nice island close to Xiamen (30min ferry ride) with relaxed gardens, some historical international buildings from its trade linked past and a temple on the peak with some great views.

I recently visited Gulangyu in December, a charming island near Xiamen, and it was an unforgettable experience. Gulangyu (鼓浪屿) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural history. The island is famous for its picturesque scenery. The lush greenery and serene atmosphere make it a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Walking through the island, we found beautifully preserved villas and charming narrow streets that are perfect for leisurely strolls. Overall, Gulangyu is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Xiamen. The combination of natural beauty, cultural history, and unique experiences makes it a memorable and enchanting place.

Gulangyu is a must to visit in Xiamen. Since, I am not a Chinese speaker. I attached an English verision brochure of Gulangyu Island… complete with the tips… ferry schedule etc
Rico P — Google review
A popular place for the locals and tourist alike. The place was a foreign enclave in the past with their passion for piano music that give the island the nickname - Piano Island. The western influenced buildings that are the main attractions are not that many nor that classical western in style. A good place to see how the foreigners lived and tried to isolated themselves from the local in the past.

Xiamen University, situated in the city of Xiamen in Fujian Province, is a multi-disciplinary university founded in 1921 with donations from overseas. The campus is known for its picturesque location between the sea and the Five Old Men mountains, making it one of the most beautiful campuses in China. The modern infrastructure sprawls over an expansive area at the foot of Wulao Feng hill and near Xiamen bay.
Called the most beautiful university in China, Xiamen University lived up to its name. Visitors need to register to get to enjoy the campus properly. It is not huge and very walkable. Clean and surrounded by lush greenery. Furong Lake and the black swans are a must see. Worth seeing during sunset.
Swanie P — Google review
So called the most beautiful university in China. I think the place is not really outstanding. The buildings are old-fashioned and not amazing. Just a common sightseeing place in Xiamen.
Michael H — Google review
Xiamen of Xiada university is one the most beautiful university in China. Its laying adjoin to the Sothern coastal line in Fujian province China. Nearly 50000 students are there for various subjects. Its completed 100 years in 2021. Well developed and very clean city. Zhangzhou campus and Xiang'an campus are main sister universities of Xiamen. Thousand of foreign student are there from over the world.

Xiamen University (厦门大学) — the pride of Fujian, fondly called Xiada by locals and students alike. Founded in 1921 by Tan Kah Kee, a patriotic overseas Chinese philanthropist, this historic institution is not only one of China’s most prestigious universities but also arguably the most aesthetically blessed - lakeside pavilions, coastal views, and architecture that flirts with both traditional Chinese charm and European flair. Basically, Hogwarts met a tropical resort and decided to educate people. As a casual walk-in wanderer without preregistration, my dreams of gracefully swanning around its leafy campus like a pretend scholar were tragically cut short. Gates firmly guarded. Security politely firm without a pass. Still, not one to be defeated, we pivoted into the next best cultural hotspots: the bookstore and the canteen. The Bookstore - Felt like walking into a scholar’s candy store. Gorgeous notebooks, brainy-looking books (even if I couldn’t read half of them), and enough university swag to dress like a legit Xiada student. Notepads, pens & sweater and you could pretending you were studying philosophy here. No one would know - thats until you try to enter the lecture grounds 😆 📸 Pro tip: Even if you’re stuck outside the campus walls, you’re right near to Nanputuo Temple and a quick stroll from the beach. It’s like being spiritually and academically blessed in one go.
The T — Google review
Xiamen University is a stunning campus, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful universities in China. Located near the coast, it boasts scenic views of both the lush campus and the surrounding sea. The architecture is a mix of traditional Chinese and modern styles, with grand buildings, tranquil lakes, and well-maintained gardens. It’s a perfect spot for a leisurely walk, offering both cultural and natural beauty. The campus is open to visitors by appointment in advance, and you can explore various historical landmarks, including the iconic South Putuo Temple and the beautiful Furong Lake. It’s also a great place to experience the local academic and cultural vibe. A must-visit for those interested in architecture, nature, or a peaceful atmosphere in Xiamen.
The G — Google review
No doubt one of the most beautiful universities! Lots of food options (for tourists?) I know I won’t able to afford to dine in the restaurants when I was in college.

Xiamen Botanical Garden, also known as Wanshi Botanical Garden, is a meticulously planned garden located around Modanyan Reservoir on the northern slope of Shi Mountain in the southeast urban area of Xiamen. The garden features over 20 botanical zones, cultivation grounds, and display rooms with tens of thousands of tropical plants.
Large beautiful botanical garden worth a wide range of plants and trees. Especially the orchid collection can match the Singapore botanical garden. Highly recommended!
Michael S — Google review
it's not a friendly place for foreign tourists! access is by presenting your passport, a phone number from China 😵‍💫 there is no presentation, no indication of plants in English! the toilet and the rules are translated into English... as a foreigner you are guarded wherever you go in the park... it's not a pleasant experience! 😣 If the park management doesn't want foreigners, make it explicit! I didn't come 10,000 km to not understand anything I see... sad 🇨🇳

Stunning ! so peacefull, so beaut, so well maintained ! very impressive as is the whole city actually. The most surprising thing I noticed was “the silence” ! (Most likely due to all the electrics cars and electric bikes) The city is spotless, large amount of trees and greenery ! Great city to explore …

I was pleasantly surprised by my visit to Xiamen's Botanical Gardens. Make no mistake about it: this is literally a grouping of several distinct gardens, and the scope of the area is very large. During my initial trip on 2019-10-24, I walked from 13:30 until the park closed at 18:00, and still had a lot of unseen area, which is why I returned on 2019-11-03. I read many reviews and websites claiming that one may enter the park for free before 07:00, and so I forefeited sleep to make that cutoff time. (Truth be told, I'd been having difficulty sleeping, and decided to wear myself out with another day of extended exercise and sightseeing instead of laying in bed until sleep overcame me.) However, I was denied entry: the park staff said I needed to get a new ticket to enter. So while FREE ENTRY BEFORE 7 AM may have once been a reality, be warned that that is NO LONGER the case. 30 RMB is a very fair price to charge for admission. Although I feel adverse to traveling and sightseeing in China because of how crowded and needlessly noisy it usually is, the vehicular noise pollution disappears once you walk 10 or so minutes away from the West entrance. That having been said, my first was very peaceful and relaxing. Aside from protesting in an effort to get free admission (I paid for a cab to get to the park before 07:00), my second visit was less pleasant because there were a lot of elderly men smoking as they slowly strolled along the paths.) If you're going to visit, just accept that you'll pay a reasonable entrance fee, and come at a time that's convenient for you. I'd arrive no later than 16:00 (Two hours prior to closing time.) But if you want to see everything, you're going to need a lot more time. To fully explore the park in its entirety, you may want to make multiple trips instead of one mega trip lasting all day. From my exposure, as with every other place in China, it's better to come during a weekday when there is no holiday going on. My only complaint is that the park should not allow visitors to enter using their private vehicles since most of them disturb the peace by honking at pedestrians. Either fine people for creating noise pollution or don't enable them to do so by letting them drive around.

Because it's too big to explore the whole place, electric bikes are also very cheap, only 18 yuan for two hours. The whole place is in the school district. There are many students and a lot of food. Many of the scenery is quite beautiful. It's just that we went too late, so we just walked around. I definitely recommend to visit piano museum 🎹 at Gulang Yu island 🏝️. It was a great experience looking at pianos nearly 200 years old🥹 They also had live music performances by the time we were there.

Interesting collection of antique pianos. It was the private collection of a person from Gulangyu who migrated to Australia. There are information in Chinese and English on each of the pianos.

Wei N — Google review
If you are at all interested in music, or even just like the sight of antique pianos, you'll love this place. It is relatively small, but the collection is large. The entrance to the museum includes the whole Shuzhuang gardens setting, which was GREAT (check out the rock maze/labyrinth after the museum, try and find all the Chinese zodiac animals too!). The museum is a private collection (of a very rich piano maestro) Recommended.

The Overseas Chinese Museum, located at 493 South Siming Road in Xiamen, is a comprehensive museum that showcases the history and culture of overseas Chinese. Established in 1956 by Mr. Tan Kah Kee, a prominent leader of overseas Chinese, the museum covers an area of over 60,000 square meters and features a six-story main building. It houses historical and cultural artifacts that provide insight into the lives of Chinese people living abroad.
I visited Overseas Chinese museum Quanzhou China few weeks ago, I was so impressed to see there were two temples at Tangerang Java Indonesia with name Benteng ,Indonesia at the museum window display. I have pictures here with my family since we know the temple was built by my ancestor and one at the display was attached at this review . I attached my own photos to show there was a pictures with names on the wall in Chinese character which I am not able to read it neither understand it, but I know one of it was my ancestor name. We cannot trace anything since there were a tsunami disaster on 1883 , left the history gone but the temple was exist as one of the survivor building. My great grandfather was only a youth left without family . Then I understand the museum had recorded the migration at that moment . I believe they were connected with Quanzhou, Fujian. It was very touching touring at the museum with lots of information for us.Great museum!

Really fascinating museum! Free, no registration needed. About 20% in English. There's a lot of good dioramas and artifacts, not just text. Goes from the maritime silk road, to Qing era emigration, development of overseas "chinatowns," and the key role of overseas Chinese, especially in SEA. Floors 1-2 are the immigration / overseas Chinese exhibitions. Floor 2 also has a taxidermied animal gallery(???). Floor 3 Is Tan Kah Kee's fantastic antiquities collection. I personally loved it. I had a short layover so only visited for an hour, but you could spend several hours reading (with translator) and looking at all interesting artifacts.

Art West Zone, located in Xiamen, is a captivating blend of colonial and traditional Fujian architecture. Once a fishing village, it has evolved into a hub for local artists to showcase and sell their work. The area also features the Shapowei Art Zone, which was formerly a refrigeration plant but now houses various retail and dining spaces, including the popular craft brewery Fat Fat Beer Horse.

Shapowei (沙坡尾) is a charming and vibrant district in Xiamen, known for its blend of traditional Chinese culture and modern art. This area was once a fishing village but has since transformed into a popular cultural hub with narrow alleys, old houses, and an artistic flair. The area is home to many cozy cafes, art galleries, and small shops, making it a perfect place to wander and explore. You can enjoy a relaxed walk along the waterfront, where the views of the harbor add to the district’s charm. Shapowei also offers local seafood and traditional snacks, providing a taste of Xiamen’s authentic flavors. A must-visit spot for anyone looking to experience both the old and new sides of the city.
The G — Google review
If Zhongshan Lu is the prim and proper tourist street, then Sha Po Wei is its artsy, slightly rebellious cousin 🎨 Tucked along the waterfront, this old fisherman’s village has been remixed into a lively little maze of indie cafes, hip bars, quirky art corners, and street bites. It’s got that nostalgic old port charm but with enough neon signs and murals to remind you you’re not in grandma’s alley anymore. By sunset, the place flips from lazy daytime coffee sips ☕ into a buzzing nightlife scene 🍻Best enjoyed with comfy shoes, a curious stomach, and the spirit of “let’s see where this alley leads.” Who says ports are just for ships? 🚢 Sha Po Wei proves they’re also for good vibes, random discoveries, and maybe a slight hangover.

Hulishan Cannon Fort is a significant historical site with a collection of cannons and captivating ocean vistas. Situated along the picturesque Xiamen Huandao Road, also known as Wuse Road, this coastal stretch offers stunning views from Xiamen University to the Convention and Exhibition Center. The fort boasts an impressive 19th-century German Krupp cannon, considered one of the world's largest and oldest cannons.

Nice small place with a garden and views of the sea. There are guard performances.
Josep P — Google review
Mildly interesting fort with a lot of cannon. 25¥. You can buy a ticket at the booth or WeChat. The large Krupp cannon is neat, and it's cool to explore the barracks and the cannon loading areas. The main officers building has some recreated rooms with Qing era furniture. There's some nice views. Lots of explanatory signage, mostly in English. They do some Qing dress-up reenactments at set times. Not sure it's worth the 25¥ unless you are really into Qing era cannons or Krupp cannon specifically. Note there's no bike parking nearby, just at the west side of the nearby beach.

Worth a visit if you're in the area, a historic (not really considering this is China) cannon fort built in 1894. It is home to one of the world's oldest cannons (19th Century German Grupp). Grounds are also nice.

There are also many beautiful Chinese-owned hotels for foreigners, so you will be happy to choose a hotel. We also recommend cheap direct flights from Japan with Xiamen Airlines. Xiauda White City, where Xiamen University is located, is full of greenery. If you go out to the coast from there, you will find Shirajo Beach. This is my favorite place in Xiamen.
