The Science Center of Iowa is a science-focused learning center that offers interactive galleries, learning labs, a planetarium, and an IMAX cinema. Since its opening in 1970, the center has provided informative and hands-on exhibits where visitors can explore various scientific topics. The Brick by Brick exhibit showcases LEGO-built structures and offers building challenges related to architecture and engineering.
It’s very good for children 12 and under. Teens may not like much. There is one section where lots of structures are made of Lego. They have unique dome theater as well. Movie selection can improve.

We were really looking forward to visiting the science centre and had kept it for a cold winters day. The experience was super disappointing. I was expecting more things for adults I guess, and a little more excitement. I enjoy a planetarium and when they said there was a show we made sure to go. Our planetarium back home in South Africa is a far better experience. There is no talking, the seats are comfortable and go back, and you are able to take it all in. Here there was chatter, you sat on plastic chairs, and in order to experience it all, you have to sit with your head back for half an hour - a rather painful experience. Been there, done that.
Lorien S — Google review
While the Science Center is a fun place to explore and learn...I feel like the experience has been downgraded in recent years. I remember there being a lot more to do when you where there...from seeing the pendulum that kept time by the IMax theater, to seeing Channel 13 weather broadcasted if you were lucky to be there during a time they were there. And I also remember there being a lot more hands on activities too... Now the pendulum is apparently shut down(?) as is the cafe that was there..And everything seemed largely scaled back. I remember when the Science Center has something there for everyone of all ages, now it seems to be just a glorified children's museum and very dumbed down. I don't know if and when I will be back. I was disappointed that so much was either closed or just blocked off. Definitely not worth the price in my opinion. But I do enjoy the nature area. It always is my favorite area to visit here. I'm glad to see it has gotten such a glow up in recently years. And the space show was cool too.
Judai W — Google review
This is such a fun place for all ages. We loved the time we spent and there was fun things for toddlers, teens, and adults.
Sarah T — Google review
Our family of 4 (kids 5 &3) spent ~5 hours here, but we could have easily spent more! It was our first time here and I was very impressed with the enthusiasm of the staff as well as the cleanliness and condition of of the facilities. We couldn’t pick a favorite room, we loved the variety in the rooms and were impressed with multiple. We will definitely plan another trip in the future and look forward to seeing their new exhibit that was being renovated while we were there!
Hannah P — Google review
If you haven't done the sensory hours at the science center, you are missing out. My daughters and myself are very sensitive to sound so once a month they offer a sensory friendly night. It literally felt like we had the place to ourselves. Of course we didn't but only 10 or so families were there tonight spread all out the science center. We always love the activity room on the second floor with the rockets and water table, and the little play room on the first floor off to the left. My girls are 4. They had a great lego display on the first floor off to the back left and the kids loved picking corn, apples and gathering chicken eggs in the play room.
Jazmin M — Google review
What a great family experience! There are activities for all ages. All of the exhibits are interactive. It has activities that helped my child want to try all them all. Love the rocket building and launching, the big ball wall, and of course the Lego room. Had fun building something in the make it area. Overall, great experience for everyone in my family. Many fun times at the Science Center!!
Monica — Google review
Fun for the whole family. We could have spent a couple days here without the kids getting bored. After 6 hours they were asking when we could come back. As a parent I was disappointed that several of the exhibits were closed when we visited (June 2024), but it didn’t bother the kids. My kids were bummed that some of the (I’m guessing older exhibits) were missing parts and dysfunctional/inoperable. But overall, definitely worth spending a day there with the kiddos. Also, you can save $2 per person if you buy tickets in advance online.

In the heart of downtown Des Moines lies the picturesque Pappajohn Sculpture Park, part of Western Gateway Park. This 4.4-acre park is home to nearly thirty stunning sculptures by esteemed artists from around the world. The collection, which opened in 2009, offers a diverse range of styles and mediums that are free for all to enjoy. Visitors can explore striking shapes and sizes that make for fantastic photos against the city's skyline.
Really enjoyed visiting the park and walk around. There was plenty of parking around and it was easy to figure out how to pay. Took me about one hour to walk around take pictures and enjoy the art...3000 steps or so
Juliana M — Google review
I wish it was a bit more interactive. Only one sculpture didn’t say “no touching” some of them were cool and creepy all at once. A nice place to stop if you have some time to waste on a beautiful day.
Andrea S — Google review
8.18.25 I came across this place while visiting Des Moines for work. It says that this park is named after John and Mary Pappajohn, who are renowned art collectors. They donated the initial collection of sculptures—28 pieces valued at an estimated $40 million—to the city of Des Moines. Free to walk around and explore.
Margaret H — Google review
Nice area, we saw a family having a picnic there yesterday. It would be awesome if there was a drinking fountain and a small restroom available. I would like to see more art eventually as well or if they could bring in some seasonal sculptures on occasion that would be cool too.
Sarah L — Google review
Five year old loved it. He really liked finding the actual pieces of art in person of the map of the park they have available at random spots through out. All in all we had fun.

Is an absolute beautiful day lots of people just walking around taking pictures to some really nice quiet place

Nice park for walking through and looking at a few sculptures. It was a hot day. Some shade was helpful. Saw a few people using their lunch time to stroll around the park. Enjoyable park to slow the pace of the day.

The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden is a seven-acre public garden located in downtown Des Moines, offering beautifully designed gardens including a geodesic-domed conservatory with indoor plants from around the world, a water garden, hillside garden, Lauridsen savannah, Meredith terraces, and Ruan Allee. The botanical center also provides educational programs for visitors of all ages and hosts art shows.
The small climatron is nice, but the best areas are outside, where they have divided up the garden into smaller, well-landscaped spaces. It was spectacular in summer, but I have included photos from October to show the great variety of flowering plants still seen. The restaurant is unusually good - a nicely designed space with foods ranging from gourmet to hamburgers, and a good wine list.

Great for families, nature lovers, photographers, and anyone looking for a calm getaway within the city. We recently visited the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden and it was a peaceful, beautiful experience! 🌺🌳 The indoor conservatory is filled with tropical plants and flowers, creating a warm, vibrant escape. Outdoor gardens are well-maintained and perfect for a relaxing stroll. Especially the water features. It’s also a great place for photography, with plenty of colorful spots and natural light. The staff were friendly and helpful. However, that garden requires ticket to enter and it would be great if the entry fee could be little less ( around $5) or free for everyone. There is nothing that much to really explore within $15 ertry fee.
Connected B — Google review
This place was beautiful and I am so glad we went! For $12 admission (lower for seniors and kids) I think it was well worth it. Just to see a monstera (a few, actually) with fruit in person was amazing! So many beautiful plants and the koi fish are amazing as well. And the gift shop had some wonderful things, though very expensive.
Allyssa — Google review
So much fun! Lots of cool gardens both inside and outside. It took us maybe 30-40 mins to look through everything so was definitely worth the price. There was a very helpful guide Steve (or Steven?) there who answered all of our questions and pointed out some cool features!
Alanna — Google review
We visited the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden on a Sunday and were pleasantly surprised to find it not too crowded. Though the garden is small, it’s beautifully maintained and offers lovely green spaces perfect for quality family time or quiet relaxation. The on-site cafeteria is a nice bonus, with nutritious and tasty food options that make it easy to spend a few hours enjoying both nature and a good meal. A charming spot to recharge and connect with nature in the city.
Sonja T — Google review
Second visit for my wife & me to this very well laid out and maintained Botanical Garden, this time during their annual BOOtanical Garden Trick or Trees Halloween-themed event inside the glass dome Conservatory. Many of the staff members were dressed in Halloween costumes, interacting with the young costumed visitors who were fascinated by the unique decorations & being exposed to simple concepts of nature in a family-friendly atmosphere. The Greater DSM Botanical Garden is a beautiful downtown facility along the Des Moines River, suitable for all ages and enjoyable in all seasons.
JMC S — Google review
I’ve managed botanic gardens for decades and I will tell you with authority this is a very well-run garden. The dome is loaded with uncommon and well-tended tropicals, subtropicals and container plants with plenty of seating. The water garden, perennial gardens and annual borders are stunning and offer a beautiful selection of colorful and textural plantings. Whoever assembles the mixed containers outside is an artist. While this garden may be on the smaller side, it’s 100% worth the price of admission and does the capital city proud. I’ve seen so many public gardens I can sometimes get bored by the same old- but I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and found so much to love. Great job!
Christian P — Google review
My first experience with the Botanical Gardens was 45 years ago. It has been improved upon so much. Beautiful outdoor water gardens. The children's play area was delightful. My grandkids loved it. My favorite thing outdoors was sitting on a bench under the waterfall. There are many sitting areas you could enjoy the sights and sounds of the outdoors. Lovely experience. I highly recommend.

Zoos & Aquariums
Blank Park Zoo, located just fifteen minutes south of the city center, offers a year-round experience with train rides, petting areas, a carousel, concessions and more. It is larger and more diverse compared to Niabi Zoo and is within easy driving distance from Des Moines. Opened in 1966, it is the only accredited zoo in the state and houses over 1,500 mammals, birds and reptiles representing over 100 different species.
Had a great time with the family viewing all the wonderful animals. Lots to see but doesn’t take all day but you could if you wanted it to. I enjoyed the wildflowers particularly, just so much color there, also the monkeys make me laugh. Clean faculty, friendly staff and lots of parking.
Roy B — Google review
Had a super fun time. Loved the Dino theme park, got to see the seal show, enjoyed good food and did some other fun activities, kiddos had their face painted , fed the fish and goat, took a ride on the train. Just a great place to spend time with the family.
Sayuly G — Google review
9/28/25 2nd time taking our kiddos to this zoo. The last time we went was July 2024 and had a great time! Definitely was surprised how big it got since I was in elementary school. Today was a great day coming, we got there around 10:30am and there was no line. We bought our tickets online and got to use our kids free admission tickets from the summer reading program 😍 Wasn’t super busy at all! Which made it so easy to look at each exhibit without feeling rushed by the crowd. Some attractions were closed due to the end of certain seasons. So always check online to see which ones. Was a bit disappointed that they didn’t have the sea lion training demonstration as the website states its a daily activity except for Tuesdays. My kids and I waited for 30ish minutes in the area to see the 3:15pm slot and when I finally asked, the staff member told me it was only for the summer. No worries, but please state that on your website please 🥲 Otherwise the kids of course had a great day at the zoo and loved seeing all the Dino’s as well!!! ❤️
Jennavie O — Google review
Blank Park Zoo is a fun and family-friendly place to visit. It’s clean, well-organized, and the animals look well cared for. The staff are friendly and informative, and there are plenty of shaded areas and rest spots. A great place for a weekend trip — kids and adults will both enjoy it. However the zoo itself not too large and compare to its entry fee $20 it may not a good fit for many people.
Connected B — Google review
My family and I loved going to their Bright Lights lantern light display! It was absolutely beautiful and so peaceful. There are so many beautiful and well-crafted lighted lanterns to look at, all a variety of plants and animals. They even had some extra areas for kids, such as these lit-up swings and a music and dancing area. Definitely an experience I recommend! Well worth it and we will be back.
Megan — Google review
Nice little zoo with plenty to offer. The exhibits are interesting and the zoo has a lot of places to explore. The day I went with my group it was very hot, luckily the zoo has a bunch of tree cover. The staff were nice and answered my questions whenever we asked about the animals. The gift shop was great. Tempted myself with several shirts and got my son a couple of gifts.
Brandon H — Google review
Great family fun! The zoo felt safe, clean, and incredibly informative and fun for the whole family. We have an 8 and 10 year old and it took us about 2.5-3 hours to go through the whole zoo. Not a bad start to our day! Lines moved fast at the front and all staff was friendly.
Robyn A — Google review
The Blank Park Zoo is a great family-friendly zoo! It's great to have a zoo in central Iowa that has a variety of animals, events and educational opportunities. In 2025 you can see "Dino-Park Zoo" with several animatronic dinosaur displays throughout the zoo! Membership is fairly priced with many benefits. The zoo has plans to continue expanding which will be great!

The Iowa State Capitol, located in downtown Des Moines, is a stunning example of 1800s architecture and an important landmark in the heart of the city. This legislative building boasts elegant Renaissance Revival style design with Corinthian columns and intricate cornices. The central dome, covered in 23-karat gold leaf, along with additional domes at each corner make it the only five-domed capitol in the country. The interior features luxurious furnishings including 29 types of marble.
What a gorgeous Capitol building Iowa has!!! Wow! We were honored to be guests here. My wife and I took a self-guided tour. We heard a few things on the actual tour we encountered a few times. They were friendly. The tours are lovely. We just didn’t have that much time. The law library is stunning! Don’t miss it. The Secretary of State’s office was so cool!! We saw the original Iowa state constitution. They let us see the ground floor of the 3-story vault too. Very cool! The grounds have so much to see too. What a place!!
Dustin E — Google review
The Iowa State Capitol was stunning from the start, its gold dome gleaming proudly above Des Moines. Inside, friendly security officers greeted us with smiles and a touch of humor, setting the tone for a great visit. The intricate tile mosaics were breathtaking, and the library was a true gem, filled with charm and small spiral staircases leading to its upper levels, making it one of the most beautiful spaces in any Capitol we’ve visited.
Charlie P — Google review
We went on a tour with Karen, who was a great tour guide. It is worth finding out if you can go on a guided tour instead if a self tour. She pointed out things we would never have seen and we got to go to the dome. Great tour, lovely building.
Becky J — Google review
We got a guided tour and it was incredible! Julie was extremely knowledgeable, kind, and helpful. The history, the architecture, the art, it is all rich and intriguing. I can not thank Julie enough for how amazing she was at informing us of the beauty of the Capitol. Iowa, for all the times people call you an ugly state, your capitol is one of the most beautiful I have had the pleasure of being in!

This is a must see if your visit Des Moines! It is free to visit with free parking. Beautiful building and amazing architecture. Amazing this was built in the 1800s. Visitors tour guide book is only $1 and no tax.

This is the most beautiful state capitol I have ever seen. We had a wonderful tour and enjoyed it immensely. Its beauty reminds me of many buildings I have seen in Europe!

Great place!! Very beautiful inside and great architecture. It's free to visit. And they even offer a tour (free maybe) to go further up in the building. We didn't get to do this, but I would definitely recommend getting this booked ahead of time if you want to.

Went on a Sunday 😣but enjoyed the outside sculpture. The view from the capital is amazing , there is a section on the front entry on the ground they have the map with all the counties , Al the outdoor benches are named after every governor. That is a nice gesture.

Des Moines' Downtown Farmers’ Market is a vibrant event that takes place every Saturday from May to October. With over 300 vendors offering fresh produce, handmade crafts, and delicious food, it's a feast for the senses. Visitors can enjoy nitro-infused coffee from Watershed Cold Brew and indulge in cheese-stuffed papusas from Papusas El Salvador. The market also features activities like puppy petting and offers a lively atmosphere for couples looking for a unique date idea.
We’re traveling from Ohio and happened to be in town for today’s market. We had a wonderful time and spent hours visiting the booths. My husband and my puppy rated it a 5 out of 5. 😃

Top 2 things to do on a summer Saturday in Des Moines ! Lots of diversity in food, local products and music. Make sure you get a good breakfast sandwich. I took it to go for lunch and go early before it gets too crowded. Visiting from MA sorry I’m missing the state fair.

What a wonderful experience today. Tons of vendors from flowers to bakery goods to German Brat’s to soap’s. Also multiple live music musicians on multiple street corners. So much stuff.

I love the Des Moines Downtown Farmers Market. I go every Saturday that I am able to, whether I plan on buying something or not. I have enjoyed getting a freshly made Sourdough every week, have found some delicious honey that reminds me of the Fynbos honey I get back home, as well as some lovely baked goods, fresh vegetables and there are always beautiful flowers to see to. Very sad this is ending soon, I believe it runs till the end of October and then closes for Winter.

It was my very first time being at the Des Moines Farmer's Market! Such a great experience! Lots of people! Lots of goodies to stock up on! I got the biggest cookie of my life! It's every Saturday from the first weekend of May to the last weekend of October! I'll definitely be back!
Kari M — Google review
The Farmer's Market is always fun. The best advice is to go early. For 2 reasons. #1 it's less busy early. #2 you can park on the street for free until 9 am
Cyndie A — Google review
Spectacular farmers market with a wide variety of produce, baked goods, cheeses, some meat vendors, wares, flowers and more. Loved the food trucks and ready to eat vendors such as the egg roll carts, pretzels, and all the samples !! Super easy parking, we chose a private garage but loads of free space available. Many accessible points of entry as there's a main drag with off shoots from closed streets. My hands were full for the hour we were there, only snatching this one shot at a flower vendor. May - October take a Saturday get up early and experience the market. Honestly reminded me of shakedown at a dead show. haha good times !! Great job Des Moines!
Layla T — Google review
I absolutely LOVE the Des Moines Downtown Farmer's Market. The atmosphere is absolutely charged with hype and fun! There is something for everyone from purchasing goods and wheres to food for your fridge and pantry and food for immediate consumption! There are people galore; dogs and even some cats, too! Shop the tents/food trucks some Saturday morning during the season, purchase some goods, eat some food and enjoy your time outdoors people watching or listening to one of the performers!

Housed in an impressive Art Deco and Art Nouveau-style building designed by Eliel Saarinen, the center offers an enriching cultural experience for art enthusiasts.
What a surprise on our tour through the Des Moines Area!! The family was in the area for the weekend and trying to see Des Moines and this popped up on our radar. From the outside we had no idea how much there was to see inside. I am glad we stopped. The Gift Shop was exceptional, maybe the most expensive part of our weekend, but well worth it. The art was a nice mix of local and international works, showcasing a nice eclectic mix of works. I am a sculpture guy and the rest of the family likes neat art, we were all impressed by the offerings here.

Wonderful mini-retreat in this lovely garden. Spring is slowly waiting and leaves gently unfold and blooms blossom in their own time. The rose garden is so demure in April; although, a well staged reprieve from the winter’s stagnancy. Andy Goldsworthy’s the Three Cairns keenly sits at the hill’s top. The landscape is both a photographer’s and a bird watcher’s dream.

Highly recommend visiting this art museum! It is so quiet, clean, and spacious. There are many different exhibits with unique art pieces. We spent a few hours here, but you can easily spend longer depending on how much time you take. There are different sections with floors or elevators to access. The staff are friendly and helpful. I also love and recommend checking out the gift shop inside, which includes so many fun, unique, and interesting items for anyone’s taste and style. I bought this fair trade chocolate bar and a greeting card. Overall, a great experience and I would return. Admission is free.

The Des Moines Art Center is truly a gem. Every corner of the museum feels like an aesthetic experience, from the stunning architecture by Eliel Saarinen, I.M. Pei, and Richard Meier, to the outdoor sculptures, rose garden, and reflecting pool that surrounds the building. Admission is free, which makes it even more remarkable. We especially enjoyed the current exhibition by Firelei Báez, an incredible Dominican Republic–born artist whose work is vibrant, thought-provoking, and beautifully displayed in the main gallery. The restaurant is a highlight with delicious food, warm service, and a gorgeous view that makes it a perfect stop during a visit. The art shop is equally impressive, offering thoughtful, high-quality gifts and creative finds you won’t see in typical museum shops. The staff throughout the center are welcoming and knowledgeable, and the workshops, lectures, and film programs make this a lively hub for art and culture in the community. We highly recommend the Des Moines Art Center. whether you’re coming for the rotating exhibitions, the architecture, the restaurant, or simply the peaceful grounds, it’s an unforgettable experience.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Truly Satisfying Art Experience! *Free admission Even with the main gallery closed, my visit to the Des Moines Art Center was an absolute delight and still earned a 5-star rating from me! They have an incredible collection featuring works from lots of artists. I was completely mesmerized by one of the paintings in particular—seeing a piece from the 1800s up close was a truly satisfying and unforgettable experience. The quality and variety of art on display were fantastic. Don't let a partial closure deter you; there is still so much to see and appreciate here. I can't wait to go back once the main gallery reopens!

We saw the Pork Tornados at the MidAmerican stage on Thursday, August 14, 2025. This is our favorite free stage at the fair, but we love that the fair has so much quality free entertainment. This band is awesome!! We highly recommend the band and the venue!!

Second time ever going. It was a warm one this year, we still enjoyed getting out. Realized after we’d left that we unfortunately didn’t cover everything we’d like to have, but that’s our fault. Didn’t take many pictures. Hope we can make it back in the future and cover everything.

Rock climbing gym
Climb Iowa - East Village is a welcoming and inclusive rock climbing gym suitable for all skill levels. The staff is friendly and provides thorough instruction, making it an excellent choice for beginners. The facility offers a variety of climbing routes, catering to both novices and experienced climbers. Visitors appreciate the supportive atmosphere and reasonable pricing. Additionally, the gym's spaciousness allows for enjoyable visits during weekdays when it tends to be less crowded.
I’ve visited with friends before and honestly it is way less bro-ey than other climbing gyms I’ve experienced. I would highly suggest visiting during a weekday as it was pretty empty! Also, pro tip: the lower your camera is to the ground, the more impressive your climbing looks lol

Great gym overall! The setting was pretty unique with a lot of thought-provoking routes, unusual starts, and fun transitions. The staff was very nice and welcoming. The facility itself is cute and clean with a lot of thoughtful touches, like bandaids and hair ties in the bathroom. If I’m ever in Des Moines again I would definitely come back!

I'm not in shape at all and it took effort but I looooved it! give it a try! you don't need to be a pro rock climber to have fun. we will all be back.

Salisbury House & Gardens is a remarkable historic site in Des Moines, dating back to the 1920s. This 42-room mansion, reminiscent of the Kings House in Salisbury, England, serves as an art museum and library showcasing the Weeks' extensive collections. The estate also features beautiful botanical gardens and hosts various events such as live concerts and Shakespeare on the Lawn. Additionally, it offers itself as a unique wedding venue with dedicated services for ceremonies and receptions.
Amazing English inspired mansion with a vast assortment of painting, sculptures, and antique furnishings. The staff were very knowledgeable about everything also. There was a baby gift shop with nice little souvenirs. I recommend purchasing one of the roof tiles. For only $25 you can get one of the old roof tiles that were brought over from England and date to 1580-1650. A great price for a piece of history.

I LOVED this place! This was a spur of the moment, ordered tickets online. Very easy to do. $10 plus tax, total was $22 plus change. Used gps directions. Beautiful inside and out. Well manicured and tended garden and lawn in early September. Indoor had AC throughout. Main floor and 2nd floor was open to walk in and look around after showing my ticket pass. If we had any questions a VERY knowledgeable person at the entrance was available or I could scan a QR code at the entrance that would answer questions. I chose to run back to the person when I had questions. The next time I will choose a guided tour. There is so much to see. Who knew such a gem was right here in Des Moines? I will be back, more than once! I highly recommend everyone see this.

Incredible 1923 Gothic/Tudor styled mansion with features imported from England, including the White Cliffs of Dover, 1600s German statuary, English wood beams, stone fireplace, and stones from Greece. The 28,000 foot mansion is home to art and historical pieces such as: suit of armor, tapestries, European paintings, religious art, sculptures, a Buddha statue, Native American art, original furniture, a vase from Cyprus dating to 1000 BCE. Gorgeous gardens. Interesting history on the Weeks family wealth and the Armand cosmetic business that they started. Impressive art collection that symbolizes Edith Weeks’ vast knowledge of history and art. Beautiful old growth woods, outdoor spaces for music festivals. Knowledgeable docents that can answer all of your questions. It was definitely worth the trip and we spent 2 hours touring the mansion and the grounds.

Very interesting and informative. David Ross was our tour guide and very involved with the restoration and preservation of the house. Definitely was worth having a tour guide.

Salisbury House made for a lovely afternoon visit! The docents are knowledgeable and the home is certainly a hidden gem here in Des Moines. The architecture alone is worth the visit but also learning the story of the family that once called the property home is well worth it. Definitely recommend and an easy visit - recommend about 1.5 hours to read and do everything on an initial visit.

While in Des Moines visiting my mother we heard about a local house tour near her in Urbandale. So glad we looked it up and went for the tour. Dick was our tour guide and was fabulous!! He went into great detail and made the entire tour a great one. Mom is elderly-90, and she was using her walker-he was very kind and helpful when we needed it in the elevator and small steps throughout the house-it was very doable. We enjoyed our talk so much that at the end of the tour Dick helped Mom into our car. Thanks for a lovely day. The house inside and out is a treasure.

Our wedding at the Salisbury House was absolutely magical! The venue’s historic charm, lush gardens, and stunning architecture created the perfect backdrop for our day. Nature & Parks
Des Moines Water Works Park, located in downtown Des Moines, offers a variety of outdoor activities for visitors. The park features jogging and cycling trails, fishing spots, picnic areas with grills, and sports fields. It's an ideal spot for walking, running, biking (both road and mountain), as well as other recreational activities like boarding or blading. Additionally, the park has natural play areas for sensory experiences.
This place is huge! I didn't realize how big it was my first few visits, but it just keeps going! I think it would be easiest to explain as 3 different areas. One area near Gray Lake, with a small and large stage - this is where the public events are - has a nice playground, circle walking path, nice clean bathrooms, lots of water fountains and trash cans, always very upkept, also has a few sculptures, and is handicap accessible. A second area is a series of what I can best describe as ponds that seem good for fishing. Lots of people fishing here. This area is the opposite of the last one. Lots of bugs, overgrown, some trash around, no facilities in this area, but very pretty - was scared by a snake 😅. After this area is another large area that is in-between the two. Big open upkept areas, less bugs as the grass is short but more towards a very large pond in the middle, several picnic tables, there was a shelter area with tables that might have had restrooms, but there was a large group using the area so didn't check that part out yet. Seems large enough with enough variety that it could meet whatever someone is looking for in a park. Not sure if it has any wooded trails, but tons of space to walk and check things out. Also right by Gray's lake and Jasper winery - lots to do in a small area.
Jordan A — Google review
Minus the star because they held a concert right after rain and did not do anything to mitigate the muddy walking areas & exiting traffic was very congested. ( That could be influenced by local road construction or not). On the flip side the sheer of variety in food trucks and beverages both not alcoholic and adult all around plud free coozies at one stop a plethora of bathrooms available and even though it was warm out and humid to start with it was a beautiful night to see Beck in concert. The first 2 hours were his sets, including the local orchestra, which truly elevated the music, and then, after nine p m , he played his older classics. Arriving in getting parked was a great experience. It flowed well, and all of the volunteers were expertly informed, and it was a very smooth process. However , as you try to leave , there are a variety of vehicles parked with their flashers on in places to pick others up and those are not the right places to do that, which caused a bottle neck or two.

Love Des Moines Symphony concerts there on Labor day weekend. Parking and traffic can be overwhelming.
Winnie L — Google review
If you ever choose to go to a concert here, don’t. The walk is horrendous. Waiting in line for a beer for untrained event staff to serve was about an hour and a half for me. The event that I went to didn’t seem like a super popular concert but they charged you $20 for chicken strips and $25 for a burger and fries. Beers are about nine dollars apiece, depending on the event. They had a lot of porter potties, which was great and I never had to wait for a bathroom. The service was absolutely horrible in that area so if you lose your friends then you are out of luck because it took me about three hours to get service back in the area even with priority service at US cellular. Probably the worst place to have an event. June was really rough because obviously it was pretty hot at the end of the month. They move up their times normally to 630 from seven but none of the artists start till 8 PM. When you have a line that long it’s miserable. I sold my other concert tickets because it was at the same venue. I would recommend never going to a concert here.

Great Lake to walk around. Parts are shaded, but it’s definitely sunny. A few tables scattered around the lake help provide areas to enjoy a picnic. There is a small beach my area where people can go swimming and there are some small facilities to change or use the restroom. Overall, excellent place to enjoy a morning or afternoon.

Nice wide walking trail around lake. Part of it is a bridge over the over for 300-400 yards. Often fairly busy b/c it is so nice. Great place to think, walk the dog, or bring children I suppose for those that have that joyful displeasure. Front parking lot often fills up, so just plan on rear parking to make it easier on yourself.

The World Food Prize Hall of Laureates is a grand beaux arts-style building in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. It showcases the achievements in agriculture and efforts to combat hunger. The idea for the World Food Prize was conceived by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Norman Borlaug in 1986 to highlight innovation and progress in agriculture and food supply. The first laureate, Professor M.S. Swaminathan from India, was recognized for his contributions to the Green Revolution.

Went to the Queen tribute and it was amazing. The musicians shared background of the music, played a dozen Queen songs, PLUS pieces from operas and classical selections. Venue was beautiful with the candlelight. Beverages available for purchase. Comfy chairs. Could see and hear from everywhere. I sat in the way back and could see and hear everything well. Wonderful experience! Setting was much more intimate than expected. Quite lovely. The musicians were phenomenal & fun making the evening exceptionally enjoyable. Could not help but to move to the music! Outstanding choice & delivery of music for the Halloween season. I would recommend sitting in section A for the very best experience. If you want to take video or photos at the end when they allow it, you’ll want to be in the first two rows. We were in the third row, section A and it was difficult to obtain any video or photos without them being unobstructed. We are so happy that we have already purchased tickets for the Taylor Swift candlelight with our friends after last nights experience!! This type of event would be a wonderful gift for anyone I believe. So grateful we were able to be there for the first one in Des Moines! Thank you to the musicians, again they were magnificent!!

Really great event location. Not a bad seat in the house. This building is used for a variety of events from Graduations to full concerts. Very well run and organized. Lots of very helpful staff. Loading docks out back are easy to get in and out of. Plenty of parking located within walking distance. Entrance is usually limited to the south side for shows. Bathrooms are clean and tidy. Seats are dated but very comfortable. Plenty of room for your knees when seated unless someone needs to get past. Very nice Venue regardless.

My hubby and I enjoyed our first visit to the Des Moines Civic Center last night to see a wonderful 50 year celebration of Air Supply. It was pouring and dark outside but inside was bright and cozy. It seemed everyone had a great seat. What I enjoyed most about the Civic Center was the staffing they had. There were many on duty and each one seemed friendly and welcoming, rolling out the red carpet of customer service. One person in particular named Susie was so kind to bring us water after we were discussing how dehydrated my husband and I were. She brought it right to our seats, which was so thoughtful. From the ticket window, to the refreshment stand and all the ushers and staff in between, it was clear that each employee was handpicked for their wonderful customer service. We felt so welcomed and truly enjoyed a night of love songs. Everyone was smiling or singing or both. It was a true house of love <3. Thank you, your efforts were very much appreciated.

This is a wonderful space to experience the arts! I've seen two shows here since January and regardless of the craft everything has been enjoyable. Yes, due to the acts themselves but I believe in the way the auditorium was built as well. The building is handicap-accessible. There are multiple entry points. And the concession stand has alcohol that you can bring in to the performances so long as you purchase the $3 souvenir cup. I absolutely love the Civic Center! I've been to multiple shows here and always have a great experience. The seating is excellent and the sound quality is consistently good. While the restrooms can have lines, they move quickly thanks to plenty of stalls. If you attend multiple shows, I highly recommend buying the souvenir cup—it’s the only cup allowed in the theater, and you can bring it back for future shows. Overall, a fantastic venue!

If I could could zero stars I would. Went to see the Hamilton show and were told to leave before our tickets were even scanned all because I had my infant with me. We walk in the door and immediately employees are pointing at me and gesturing to each other about my infant being there. We approach the employees that were scanning tickets and we get stopped and told "She (my infant) can't be here but she is cute)." One employee then proceeds to check with the manager and the manager comes to tell me the same thing and then goes on to "(the RECOMMENDED age is 5 and over. Your child must be 5 or over and have a ticket to attend the show)" She then says the same thing the first employee says "so she can't be here but she's such a cutie". I wonder if they even know or care enough to know that plenty of other parents there brought children younger than 5 and lied about their age just to buy a ticket to avoid getting a sitter or even didn't have a sitter. Mind you, my sitter lives an hour away. I also have a friend who works stage crew who has told me that there have been countless times where she has seen mothers and their INFANTS at these shows and many other shows. Will never be going back.

Nature & Parks
Raccoon River Park in West Des Moines is a sprawling 600-acre oasis that promises endless fun for everyone. This remarkable venue boasts a picturesque lake, a sandy swimming beach, and an inviting boathouse perfect for water activities. Nature enthusiasts can explore scenic trails while wildlife abounds throughout the park. Families will love the sports complexes and playgrounds, making it an ideal spot for gatherings or picnics.
Beautiful large regional park property. It has all the bells and whistles including, fishing dock, lake, boat house with rentals, ball fields, archery, hiking and biking trails and more. Great paved parking large enough for any size rig or RV. I had full bars of Verizon 4G LTE Roaming.

This is a huge waterfront park with tons of parking and areas to use for sports, walks, dogs, etc. There’s a cute little beach and paved trails running through out. The only downside is the dog park is not free, you need to scan a code and app to pay $5. I didn’t feel like going to all that when there were plenty of other areas I could walk my dogs.

Took my daughter there to compete in here first USA Triathlon. The park is excellent. Clean with an open feeling, yet safe. The lakeside is beautiful. Peaceful. Clean bathroom facilities and covered areas by the picnic areas.

This park is excellent! We were here during the Raccoon River festival, which was awesome for kids. The new playground has a healthy mix of equipment and the rubber ground. My kids especially enjoyed the myriad of climbing ropes along with the big slides. There is ample parking, a nice swimming beach, and plenty of trails around the water.

Amazing urban park for the region. The infrastructure is in top shape and there were many people happily using the park in various ways when we visited yesterday.

We spent the weekend at the raccoon River Park baseball fields, which were very nice, very clean, the staff was present on site. You saw them in the bathrooms and changing the trash. They did a great job. The concession stand had lots of options, including adult beverages.Overall a great place to spend the weekend playing baseball.

Absolutely beautiful and brilliant park. The equipment is all ability inclusive. My 10 month old and 2 year old had a blast. So much for them to do and to climb on. Had a great time. The restrooms are closed for the winter but there is a portable potty there if you need it.
Carlise C — Google review
Playground! The new all inclusive playground is finished! I love that there’s an area that’s geared towards crawlers! My 12mo isn’t walking yet and he had so much fun. They used a fake grass for the little area and then that bouncy flat surface for the other areas. There’s a lot to do! I like and don’t like how spread out it is. I like that you don’t feel like you’re on top of people because it’s spread out but that does make it difficult to keep an eye on your kids. There is the best rope climbing center I’ve ever seen, the slide is big enough to be fun but not so big like other parks that get almost too high for little kids comfort. The bathrooms are still there and the shelters with lots of picnic tables. Regular swings in the swing area and 2 bucket swings over in the little kid area. It’s a really pretty view with so many trees and being raccoon River beachside. Cons making this 4 stars that I understand are relative. Bigger kids kept coming to play in the little kid area, I had to have my head on swivel and quick reflexes to make sure my little ones fingers aren’t stepped on or that he was knocked over. It’s spread out in a way that I can’t see all areas from a single point, I just told my kids to keep checking in with me as they played or I went and found them to check in. It was busy, I know as the newness wears off it will be more “normal”. My kids had a lot of fun! It was just a little more stressful than I was anticipating because of how busy it was. Make sure you check it out and if crowds stress you out plan your visit during slow times if you can. (Early morning / during school hours)

Great Escape in Pleasant Hill is a top local spot for kids' birthday parties, offering a variety of entertainment options. This family-owned center boasts 24 bowling lanes, laser tag, over 50 arcade games, virtual reality experiences, and a restaurant called Social-Eats & Crafts. Visitors praise the friendly atmosphere and cleanliness of the venue. The arcade is particularly popular among kids due to its extensive selection of games. Additionally, the value for activities during the week is highly appreciated by visitors.
We hosted my son’s 4th birthday party here. When I arrived to decorate, they had put us at the far two lanes which gave us ample space and privacy. They had a food table set up and decorated for us and had lights that spelled out his name! We also got the gutter guards and the ball slides to help the littles. During the party, the staff kept food coming and drinks full. The manager on duty, Romeo, was especially helpful. We ended up ordering a lot more food than I originally thought and added a lane, all of which he accommodated happily. The pizza was delicious!! We’ll probably be back next year for his party so we can try out laser tag and I’m sure some of his friends will have their parties there in the future, as I received a lot of compliments from other parents on the space. Very pleased!

Went for the first time after living in East Des Moines for over 2 years. My sons 13th birthday was yesterday and we were out celebrating it. We normally patronize a southern Des Moines bowling alley but somehow decided to try Great Escape. What a super and non regretful idea this was! Of course he loves food and arcade games. First of all, getting greeted upon walking in and explained about the place by Grace T., was nice and rare these days in the norm of most retail and counter people having their faces buried in their cell phones. The place is cool! The lighting, the smell of cleanliness and the layout. We went to the arcade first, choose the $30.00 card and it was plentiful enough for the two of us. Then we went to the food counter and ordered. Switched up a few things and Maria M was also helpful and great! They said to get a lane and they would deliver the food and drinks when ready. (Unlike the other places where we have been going). We got the lane and when we sat down, in the retro comfortable chairs, my boy says “daddy let’s make this our regular place, it is cleaner by far than the others and the arcade is really good, I already like it better”. Food came and for bowling alley type of food, it was excellent! Bathroom was freshly wiped down when I used it without garbage or urine on the floor and again unlike the other places we have been. Spent a total of $125.00. $45.00 for food, $50.00 for three games each of bowling (this was prime time Saturday late afternoon-early evening time) and $30.00 for the arcade. I know if we did a movie, snacks, game room and a meal at the food court at Jordan Creek Mall it would have been at least $160.00 +. BTW you might say the $49.17 for bowling was pricy but not considering the Saturday prime time factor. They have those unlimited time and other non-Saturday promotions the same as the other places. Oh yeah, they have these cool 3D helpful ‘where to hit the pins on the second throw’ that flashes on the scoreboard. The place is simply clean, cool and laid out well. IMO (and I work hard for my money) a great value without regrets for the $125.00 plus tips I dropped at Great Escape. Highly recommended without reservations by a real person that simply appreciates and loves real value from a retail establishment that seemingly cares about its customers.

Great place to bowl, also has arcade, 2 bars, private areas for parties.

Not horrible, definitely not great. Pizza took almost an hour to come out and tasted like plastic, kids didn't eat it. A little overpriced. Employees were all amazing, but we won't be back again.
Mariah S — Google review
Went to the arcade and played games then went to use our points and were told we would need to wait until 4pm it was 12:45 at this point I explain I don’t get her often and If she can’t use them now she may never be able too. Romeo then says give me 10 minutes to see if my cook can help. We have now been waiting over 30 minutes and we’re being told he just can’t help us. We are not waiting in line with everyone else to see if Romeo can give us 10 minutes of his time to spend her tickets. We’ve waited on at least 5-8 groups of people to come in but they can’t wait for us to use your tickets? This is unacceptable and almost feels scammy I can spend my money on an arcade card but can’t redeem my points?
Angeleah J — Google review
Update 12/26/2022 Staff was great. The arcade offering was subpar. They took away the duckie machine, my kids favorite. The arcade price is astronomical, example..for $30 you get 60 credits and can only play 10 games of Halo, roughly 20 minutes. The previous experience was outstanding...now it's lame. I do not recommend this establishment. Wait til Dave and buster open in west Des Moines and go enjoy the real experience. Will no longer bring the kiddos here. No wonder it's empty....high price and fewer selections.
Mr. N — Google review
Bowling was good, lane broke part way through but they quickly made it right and got us into another one. Not a bad price either. Food was a definite 1 star. Not good at all. My party got a few pizzas, wings, a chicken sandwich, and a milkshake. The pizza was hardly cut and dripping grease. The wings were good. The chicken sandwich tasted good but also very greasy. They were out of milk and refunded us for the milkshake.

We had an appreciation party for ministry volunteers on Saturday, and it was a GREAT experience. Andréa made the planning process so easy and took great care of us the whole time. The food was amazing, and having our own space in the banquet room and VIP lanes made the event feel extra special. Our team had so much fun while being able to relax together and celebrate all the hard work they had put in. THANK YOU Andréa and Great Escape!

Lauridsen Skatepark, located at 901 Second Ave., is the largest skate park in the United States, offering an expansive 88,000 square feet of skate-able terrain. Situated adjacent to the Principal Riverwalk and the Des Moines River, it provides action-packed views of skateboarders in motion. The park features a variety of elements suitable for skaters of all skill levels and has smooth surfaces with ample seating throughout.
I am so happy that they built this. While I was living downtown, I know many residents were concerned, but I think that those concerned about a skatepark being in downtown Des Moines were proven wrong. This has been great for the community and I am so happy to see so many Iowans visiting the skate park and then exploring the rest of what downtown Des Moines has to offer.

I love this park! There's so many things to do so it's great for anything you bring whether it's a skateboard, scooter, bike or rollerblades! Great flow to thrash up and down the park nonstop! The art is awesome to look at as you're there. Right next to the river and bike path. Quite a bit of space for parking. Everyone I've interacted with is friendly and always willing to help or teach one another. 😁🤙🏽

Well... it's impressive and large. Concrete is smooth and wonderful. Plenty of spacious areas to try out street tricks plus so many transitions and three pools - one of which is freakishly deep!! Locals are very chill and friendly. The overhead lights are very bright and are great to continue skating after sunset. The lights go dim at 10pm and then completely off at 10:30. Parking lot is lit at night too, but be sure to stow away stuff as it's not directly connected to the skatepark. Overall, highly recommended!

A great skatepark, and the largest in the country. Easily worth the 2-hour drive from Omaha to get to, even if all you're visiting for is just the skatepark. If I had the chance, I'd imagine I could skate this park every day and not get tired or bored of it, with how big it is and how much variety there is to it. It has literally everything a skater of all skill levels could want. When I've been there it understandably has been popular and busy, but the park is big enough that it really isn't an issue. Just keep an eye out where you're going and you should be fine!

Great place for a comedy show. I saw Jeff Arcuri and he was amazing! I went by myself, and was lucky to sit next to and meet an amazing woman named Erica who was there with a friend. We vibed during the show and parted ways afterwards, creating a memory I will never forget.

Pros: Love the old historical beauty of this place. Bren there twice this year for shows. Great view of stage no matter where you sit. Cons: Because its an older building bathrooms are small. Seats do not accommodate tall or larger people. Knees were into the chair in front of me all night. Metal frame of chairs hurt to sit narrow seats.

Our second concert here. Love it! At 6'3 and 5'9 both with new knees sitting down in low rise seats is a comical sight. Other than that it's a great venue.

The place is stunning inside. They have to do better on the bathrooms. You'd think after all these years and all the shows and profits, they could add a couple more bathrooms. It's like a maze to find the one, no matter how many times you have been there. The worst bathroom set up I think I have seen in a place like this.

Cool to see, yet the seats are SO close together & it makes it very hard to move around. Went as I’ve wanted to see Michael W. Smith live since I was a teen! Great concert, very friendly employees, & not hard to leave like at many concert venues when it’s over. Would go again, for the right artist.

Terrace Hill Historic Site, also known as the Iowa Governors Mansion, is a grand mansion located on Grand Avenue in Des Moines. Built in 1869 by Iowa's first millionaire, Benjamin Franklin Allen, it was later sold to the Hubbell family and eventually became the official residence of the Governor of Iowa in 1971. This Second Empire style mansion was declared a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 2003.

This hockey team, and all the publicists, announcers, coaches, sales staff, etc are the BEST! They go the extra mile to engage fans. Every game is fun, win or lose (but a win is better 😀). They play at Wells Fargo area so all kinds of food and beverages available, wheelchair accessible, parking nearby, skads of seating. The price to go to the game is so fair! I have received over a dozen phone calls and emails from them about a season membership and I only went to two games. I never gave them permission to call or email me. I asked them numerous times to remove from their call list and email list which they obviously never did. I never game them permission to put me on those lists either. I would understand if I went to more games but when you only go to two and they feel that's enough to warrant harassment on their part. They get your email address through the Wild store because they claim they need an email to send a receipt instead of printing out one. I have filed a complaint with the FCC, FTC, and The Iowa Attorney General's Office. The next step will be to contact an attorney and see what I can do about this constant harassment.

Great place for concerts. It's an open air venue that hosts concerts rain or shine. I love the outdoors aspect of it because most concert venues get so hot from all the body heat. Here you can step away from the crowd and cool off in the nice breeze coming off the river. The acoustics are surprisingly good. The sound is consistent from front to back. I've never had any trouble finding parking. There is no parking lot here so you have to park on the street. Don't forget to bring change so you can feed the meter!
Anne M — Google review
If you are looking for something fun to do downtown, this is it. Be prepared to read/sign a waiver, and it’s pretty pricey for admission and skates. All kids have to wear skates on the ice, even if you plan to carry them.

So my oldest and his girlfriend invited us out to skate. I'm not much of an ice skater, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The entry and skate fee is reasonable The staff was super helpful and nice. The music is great. Didn't like that the concessions were sparce and that they'd run out of gloves or that the bumper rentals were so high. BUT the smile on their faces and the cool color lighting on the ice in the evening were bomb! I will return for sure!

Our family skates a lot and we were in town for New years and thought this would be something fun for us to do. It's a cool environment with it being downtown but there's a lot they could improve on. The price was ridiculous. In Minneapolis you can skate on an outdoor rink that's bigger for $5. If you have you own skates it was free. Here it was $14 with skate rental. That's nuts. And the ice was super rough and cut up. They did clean it once but they should use tge Zamboni more often. Probably won't go again.

It's a great spot for families with kids as it offers a wading pool and plenty of picnic tables and barbecue facilities for outdoor meals. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the open-air shelter with picnic tables and ample green space to relax.
I was actually on my way to a different park when I came across Ashby Park. I had not noticed the walking trail before, but the blooming Redbuds drew me in. Other families were at the park, but our group myself (a Black woman), my white spouse, our friend, and our children were the only one singled out and monitored.First, an uniformed man with a dog walked slowly by, watching us closely. He returned a short time later and sat near us, silently observing. Then a second uniformed staff member arrived, walked a slow circle around our picnic table, and also sat down nearby, continuing the pattern of unwanted scrutiny. Eventually, the staff member said, “Sundown’s coming,” and told us he was “locking everything up,” warning we only had a few minutes to grill despite having just arrived. The park was still open, and no other group was approached. As we continued enjoying what little time we had left, a white SUV sat parked watching us the entire time, not engaging, just watching. It pulled off the moment we began packing up to leave and immediately after, the same staff member pulled in again. We weren’t loud, we weren’t breaking rules. We were a peaceful family at a public park. But from the moment we arrived, we were surveilled, intimidated, and clearly made to feel we didn’t belong. This wasn’t just uncomfortable it felt deliberate.I do not recommend Ashby Park to Black families or interracial couples/ families, especially near sundown. What happened tonight was not equal treatment. It was a clear message: this space may be public, but it is not equally welcoming to all.

Ashby is one of our favorite parks in the metro. The playgrounds are fun on their own, but the standout attraction is the splash pool. It’s a great spot for little kids to cool off while parents enjoy the shade.
Mazie S — Google review
Not too crowded and well kept. My son had a lot of fun woth the small playground for toddlers. Great area to picnic while the little ones play!

Ashby park is well maintained and very family friendly. It has new playground equipment for a variety of ages and includes swings for children with special needs. It has a splash-pad and two tennis/pickle ball courts.

Great splash pad and playground equipment. Wish there were more bathroom stalls, especially since it is a busy park. Shelter is nice. Walking trail with an activity right now.

This park is wonderful for everyone of all ages. The splash pool is about a foot deep and almost the entire park is shaded by trees.

Escape room center
Escape Chambers Des Moines offers an exhilarating experience that transports you into the heart of thrilling storylines, reminiscent of your favorite films. Whether you're embarking on a daring heist or navigating through a Mafia plot, each escape room is designed to immerse you in diverse genres and scenarios. This makes it an ideal spot for date nights or team-building activities with friends and colleagues. The atmosphere is engaging, ensuring that every puzzle solved brings excitement and surprises along the way.
This place was a real blast! When you first arrive, you wonder if this is the right place but sure enough it is! The one thing we found challenging was parking. ALL the street parking was taken and there were reserved parking signs EVERYWHERE! We finally found a spot but I'm pretty sure we weren't supposed to park there. Anyway, once entering the check-in process was very simple, since we did as asked online and everyone completed our waivers online! We have our names and went to the waiting area. The waiting area was very nice, coffee shop type of feel with glass windows that allowed us to see into the area where we would play. Once being herded into the staging area we dropped everything we didn't want to take on the course with us (sweatshirts, hats, phone, keys, etc.) on what could be best described as a small wooden patio and then we got to watch a cheesy instructional video, but it was informative. After that we got a good bit of instruction for a young gentleman that was very no nonsense. While he was talking you got s good look around but there was SO much of the structure hidden that you could feel the excitement mounting! After instructions were complete we walked around through some of the course doorways to walk past a counter and get our laser rifles and head bands. I was glad to see they were wirelessly connected allowing full and free movement! Though the rifles were plastic, it was NOT a cheap feeling plastic! They have a nice digital display on the side to give you round and magazine information. They make a realistic firing sound every time the trigger is pulled and some of the guns even had simulated recoil! So we headed to our base which was in a corner on the top level, OH YEA, did I mention it's two stories! Anyway, your base has a small black box that when you get killed, if the game allows, you can respawn there by simply walking near the box. While heading to our base the official tells us we cannot use the stairs to get between floors! We have to use these strange 4 foot drop steps with a padded 2x4 grab bar above to move between levels. This sounded weird to me but strangely it worked very well. And there was absolutely no running allowed. This felt like it would be a hard rule to follow but everything was so tight that it didn't seem hard AND there were several times I turned a blind corner and was glad to be moving slow, otherwise me or a fellow player probably would have gotten an accident broken noes. They had several games for us to play: team slayer, snipers, king of the hill. We only got 4 games in in our 1 hour allotment. But they were fun, action packed and fast paced! They were very nice and let us take ample pictures of our group once we were done playing. I would rate this as my best laser tag experience by far. Though it seems a bit pricy, it is well worth the additional cost! AND FILL YOU WAIVER OUT ONLINE BEFORE ARRIVING! Save both their staff and yourself a bunch of headache!

I’ve done several escape rooms and this one was by far the worst. If you want to just waist your money definitely come here. We went last night and got screwed out of our money. We had the whole thing figured out. Entered the right stuff but nothing would work. After we ran out of time, we came out and complained. The lady behind the counter refused to explain anything, just wanted us to sign a receipt. We refused to sign it until someone could show us what we did wrong. Finally some other lady came in. Went into the room by herself, we were not allowed we were told to stay where we are, and after 10 minutes she said everything works fine. We went into the room and turns out everything worked then. Weird. Save your money, frustration, and time
Thomas S — Google review
This was very disappointing and overpriced. We did the “hardest” one and it was a room full of shelves with superglued bottles on it. Many props were irrelevant to the game and the room was super small, lacking decor. $70 for two people to get a hint through a baby monitor that can’t stay on the wall? The directions were very misleading and we could barely understand them from the game master at the beginning as she talked so quickly, almost as if she couldn’t wait to get back to her front desk. We finished with 30 minutes left and expected there to be more. We needed confirmation that we were done. Extremely disappointed, and we won’t be coming back. Better way to spend $35 per person. Do yourself a favor and hire a 10 year old to come up with a better puzzle in your basement and more professional looking set ups. I felt scammed at the end of it. If I could give it 0 stars I would.
Trying H — Google review
We came here as 1st time escape room participants. It is in the basement of the building. The guy who greeted us was nice and informative. My friend picked the spy scenario which ended up being the hardest one there. We were not able to complete it but it was a lot of fun and we would go back and do it again. The cost was pretty reasonable at $35 a person. The only complaint we had was that the entry door to the escape room told us to go to a different door which was locked. It made us late to our session. But overall it was fun and worth it for us.
Jeremy S — Google review
Super disappointed. I've been to two other escape rooms. Both went above and beyond with decor and interactions. Escape chambers didn't even try and charged $35 a person. Hot glued props with half the items in the room not even relevant to the end of the game. The size of the escape room was smaller than a bedroom. I thought i was locked in a prison cell with some fake potion bottles on shelves. Finished in 30 minutes with help from the baby monitor guide. Looked at my girlfriend at the end and couldn't believe it was over. Do not waste your time with the escape room.
Eric A — Google review
It was okay. They do not appear able to accommodate 2 people groups very well. I have been to much better escape rooms before and they were better organized. The employees kept complaining that they cannot hear us very well, no live guide onsite, no greeter, everything is done through a baby monitor. Not going back.
J B — Google review
Rude additive not helpfull didn’t make Andy eye contact. Don’t waste your money here, leave immediately
Toby W — Google review
Overall disappointed with our first and likely last experience here at the escape room. We did enjoy the challenge of the room itself, however, our customer experience was suboptimal. It was a Saturday evening so we understood that they were busy, however, our room manager was extremely rude to us in the process. When we were stuck and needed a clue, we called repeatedly to ask for help and waited for over 10 minutes for a response. We eventually had to leave the room and go find an employee for help. We were told our time would be paused to make up for this, however, it never was. When we did finally get a response on a clue, the answer was short and abrupt and was clear our room moderator did not know the answer herself as we asked follow up questions and were ignored. When we tried calling back we never got a response. We ended up figuring out the room by luck and when we hit the “button” to escape the room there was no response for another 5 minutes so we weren’t sure if we were actually done. We asked the monitor to explain the last step to us as we didn’t understand how we guessed it by luck in which we were told they were too busy to explain anything to us and we had to leave, even though we had 5 minutes remaining on our room clock still. Extremely disappointed with the rude customer service this evening.

Chocolate Storybook is a must-visit for anyone with a sweet tooth. They offer an array of treats including truffles, chocolates, cotton candy, and caramel. The All-Iowa Snack Box makes for a perfect gift with local favorites like Amana mustard, summer sausage, cheese, popcorn, crackers, and chocolates. The store has been a popular spot in Des Moines for years and prides itself on bringing people together through their delicious confections made on-site.
I absolutely love this cute chocolate store! The staff are all so helpful and friendly each time we visit, and the treats are delicious. They certainly know how to get anyone in the holiday spirit.

Saw this place while driving by and decided to stop to check it out. Neither of us have much of a sweet tooth, but it was Easter weekend and we were curious. They seem to have a pretty decadent variety of sweets--everything from hard candy to novelty foods to chocolate. They had customizable chocolate Easter eggs so I got one filled with peanut butter fudge and had my dog's name written on it. You weren't obligated to put a name on it, but I thought it would make for a cute picture and I didn't want to use mine or my husband's (too long). It was extremely pricey, but that's to be expected for pieces made in-house. I also got an infamous Dubai chocolate square (my first), and wow...I totally get the hype! Chocolate is the confection I despise the most (I know. It's inhuman) but this was so good! One square was plenty for me and I probably won't eat another chocolate until fall. But, I'm honestly glad I ruined my appetite for these.

Wonderful place! Friendly staff. Not a huge place, But has a large assortment of chocolates and other confections. Has great small gifts as well. This is one of the places we planned on visiting and it did not let us down. If in the area. Check this place out. You will not be disappointed.

“Life is like an assorted box of chocolates” is an appropriate mantra as you walk into the Chocolate Storybook that unveils a host of yummy options. You’re like a kid in a candy store as you peruse different flavorful choices. The dark chocolate bites is what caught my eye even though the chocolate Easter Bunny was very tempting. Of course you weight all the advantages of why you should sample a plethora of chocolate types. Just the mere creative environment makes you smile with your purchases as you escape to your happy place to enjoy all your goodies.

Disappointed by Lack of Communication and Poor Service My boyfriend and I were incredibly let down by our experience with Chocolate Storybook. We had placed an order for a gift that was extremely important and time-sensitive, and we clearly communicated that we would be picking it up at 5 PM on July 3rd. This was confirmed in advance, and we were counting on them to follow through. When we arrived, the store was closed — with no prior notice, no call, and no explanation. We waited and tried to contact them for 30 minutes, but received no response or call back, even afterward. Not only did we leave empty-handed, but we were left scrambling without the gift we urgently needed, which was extremely frustrating and disappointing. What made the situation worse was the complete lack of acknowledgment or apology. For a business that relies on customer trust, this kind of poor communication and disregard for follow-through is unacceptable. We expected much better and unfortunately cannot recommend them based on this experience.version.

Oh my gosh this is just the cutest little chocolate shop. I wish the signage was a little bit better because we almost just drove by it thinking it was a house. Obviously this place has been around for a while and I can see why. It's got the best selection of chocolates. It also has a lot of little gifty things as well. Definitely stop by if you're a chocoholic. The prices seem reasonable and they obviously do good business as well. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a chocolate fix or a last-minute gift.

I love trying Dubai Chocolate. Was not a fan of the ones at Hy-Vee but even that one was in the ballpark. This is not even in the bleachers in the ballpark. Other chocolate is probably great. Unfortunately this was the first and only thing I tried. Yuck! Over priced and under good.

Great library with a convient location. The staff are professional and extremely helpful. Bathrooms are always well kept. Quiet reading sections throughout, with comfortable seating. Limited amount of p.c.'s available for on-line use. Printers are available (0.25 per page). Huge supply of reading materials. There is a drive up window for drop-off and pick-up with limited hours. Plenty of handicap parking, and handicap access. It would be nice if they could extend their hours to 9pm. Large children's area, with several presentations available. I recommend using this location. (Groovy Meter: 7/10)

The Des Moines Arts Festival is a world-class event held at Western Gateway Park, attracting 200,000 visitors annually. It has been recognized as the best festival in the world multiple times. The festival features big-name bands, bold artwork, global cuisine, and activities for all ages. The Creative Zone offers hands-on activities for children such as rock painting and LEGO art.
So glad to go in person again! Everything as amazing as always. So much talent there on so many levels. Free admission and free live music happening all day every day. Plenty of places to sit and rest if you need to. Every type of art from all over. Just love it! There are food trucks, beer, and sweets available all over. Expensive so bring extra cash! The creative zone has many interactive things for kids to participate in, mostly free of charge. There was a big crowd so patience helps. Lots of dogs (which I love, but many others don't). All were on leashes, however we still witnessed a couple dog fights. Scary. Easy to lose track of time there is that much cool stuff to look at and purchase. We look forward to this event every year.

It is laid out very nicely, plenty of room for people to move about and not be cluttered in one area. Parking was easy in the ramps. It was raining and down pouring while we attended, but we just stayed under a canopy to ride it out. Also loved having beer on tap. We enjoyed ourselves.

Food prices are steep, as are some of the drinks, so be prepared to throw money around at this one. That being said, it is usually a good time (despite the heat), good free shows (love the Host Country!), and always a lot of talent to be seen. It's one of the quintessential summer things to do in Des Moines.

I have been going to this festival since it began, and it has changed a lot. more music, film festival, more sponsors, etc. it is generally a great event, though I do feel the quality of visual art has fallen some. I realize that is subjective, but I keep seeing the same type of themes and styles over and over. I also did not appreciate having to run the gauntlet of aggressive cell phone and other salespeople at the entrance. just my two cents.

If you go there, please pack a bright flashlight. Lighting is not adequate on the stairs during the shows and the ushers sit at the bottom on the stairs so you can only use one side of the stairs if you need to leave the auditorium for some reason during the show. So, pack the bright light and save yourself an emergency room visit or a broken leg.

We've been to numerous shows here, musicals and comedy shows, it's great every time! Arrive early for time to use the restroom and grab a drink. Sometimes lines can be long the 10-15 min leading up to the show. Service is great though!
Taylor O — Google review
The venue was clean and easy to navigate. The views of the stage were unobstructed and the slope of the seating made it so the person in front of you is low enough where they dont impede your vision. The seating, however, was like being in economy class on an airline. Very narrow seats, and the only isles were on the extreme ends of the hall. So, if your seat was in the middle of the row, you had to squeeze past 40 or so people in either direction to get out. So if you had to use the bathroom mid-show, you would have to disturb a lot of people along the way.

If you’re trying to buy a single ticket sale for Wicked this year, you’re out of luck. Wicked was specifically excluded from the single ticket sale that happened on August 8, 2025. Tickets are currently only available by purchasing the entire Willis Broadway series season ticket package. This is draconian BS. We can only see Wicked if you buy the entire package? Get bent. Most of us don’t wanna go to every single show in your stupid package. But you hold Wicked over our heads like a whip. “Oh, you wanna see Wicked? Zombie Burger + Drink Lab is a trendy American restaurant and cocktail bar with a playful horror theme. The menu features over 20 unique burgers with creative names like Dead Moines, The Walking Ched, Undead Elvis, and Juan of the Dead. In addition to the burger options, there are vegan choices and a delicious pork tenderloin sandwich. This popular spot gained fame for its inventive offerings such as the Walking Ched burger with a deep-fried macaroni and cheese bun.
This is probably my all-time favorite restaurant due to the fantastic food, creativity of the menu and the atmosphere. I am a huge fan of Zombie movies and shows. I love all the decor throughout the restaurant, and the Zombie news on the back of the menu is a nice touch. Anytime we are in Des Moines we stop here for dinner. Tonight was our 4th time eating dinner here. The food and service is always fantastic. The prices are reasonable. My only complaint is they are always sold out of merchandise. So far we have only been able to buy a couple koozies. They have some really cool T-shirts and I would love to own one someday.

Unique place with great food! It was relatively busy when we arrived with a 25 minute wait to dine inside Zombie Burger. They also had patio seating for a slightly shorter wait. While waiting we took the opportunity to do some of the photo ops and noticed a Ramen place attached. Turns out, it's all the same place with the same menu and this side could serve us immediately. The lady was super welcoming and friendly. We ordered fried pickles, a cheeseburger, Dawn of the Dead, Walking Ched, & T-Virus all with fries. Everything was made to order and delicious. Fries were perfect.... perfect batter, perfect flavor, perfect crunch. It was a little on the pricey side, coming in at over $86 without tip. Overall, it was family friendly and a good experience.

Fun! Friendly! Delicious! We came into town for the Nicotine Dolls/Wic Whitman concert from Minnesota, a few local Ladies we were standing near told us about Zombie Burger so we hung around on Friday to see the sights until they opened. We are so glad we did! The leather Face was to die for. And the Brussel sprouts with the Zombie sauce was AMAZING! We sat outside as it was a beautiful breezy day, then this FREAKY TRUCK PULLED UP! AND A PIG MAN JUMPED OUT WITH A CHAIN SAW!!! How fun! I asked my wait staff if it was just because it was October? They said Nope, they were from the slaughter house where they get their meat from..."Just making their weekly delivery!" Talk about perfect timing to be there! It totally completed our AMAZING girls trip to Des Moines. It was my mother's 78th birthday getaway...one she will NEVER forget! Thank you Nicotine Dolls Wic Whitney and ZOMBIE BURGER!!!!!

I've been here a handful of times over the past few years. The burgers are decent and the milkshakes are always pretty good. My favorite thing to get every time is the Goat Cheese Poppers, though. So good! Especially with the raspberry dipping sauce. Somehow, it just works! I'm not sure when they added the ramen, but my hubs brought it home tonight. It was alright. The broth was a little too bitter and the char sui was cooked weird for being in ramen. It was still decent, but I think I would just stick with the burger after my next year-long hiatus. Love the updates to the inner-space, and the kiosks for ordering take-out. Novelty food, for sure. But if you like jalapeño poppers then definitely try theirs!

Tried Zombie Burger for the first time and had their special K-Pop Ramen Hunters—absolutely delicious! I don’t usually handle spice very well, but the staff was awesome and swapped the spicy broth for pork broth, which I really appreciated. On top of that, their cereal shakes are a must-try—sweet, fun, and just as good as they sound. Definitely a spot worth checking out!

Sure it’s a little gimmicky but it’s an indulgent treat every once in a while. I got a cinnamon toast crunch shake which it’s exactly as sweet and delicious as you’d expect. I also got the Juan of the dead burger with lettuce (no bun) and the veggie nut patty. I was expecting a lettuce wraps but was pleasantly surprised it was more like a salad. The veggie patty was unique and not your typically black bean burger. The burger was cheese and the sauce was creamy. I appreciate they gave the sauce on the side so it wasn’t soaking wet. It’s a bit pricey but worth it. Parking meters and garage nearby are finicky but not the restaurant’s fault.

Zombie Burger – 4/5 The food was really good, but what truly makes Zombie Burger stand out is the killer theme. The place is packed with clever, zombie-style takes on classic movie posters, and the atmosphere is an absolute vibe — everyone there seemed to be having a great time soaking it all in. I ended up giving it a 4/5, but honestly, that’s only because I think I ordered the wrong burger. I’ll definitely be back to try another one — this place is too fun (and too tasty) not to.

Had the Puppy Chow Arctic Blast- so yummy! Here’s what sets these guys apart from other ice cream places… there were pieces of puppy chow at the bottom of my cup and not just the top… talk about going the extra mile! We will be back ♥️

Snookie’s is the busiest place in Beaverdale during the summer. Cars wrap around the block for the drive-through, and there’s a crowd of people outside every night. It’s been a local favorite for nearly 40 years, and for good reason. Classic, traditional soft-serve ice cream. I tried their pumpkin ice cream the other night, and I understand now why it’s so popular. Five out of five.

The Better Homes and Gardens Test Garden is a 22-space garden in downtown Des Moines that is used for the magazine and web site as well as for employee meetings. The garden has different spaces with different plants, making it a great place to photograph or study plants. It's open on Fridays from 12-2 p.m. and is free to visit.
Beautiful garden hidden just west of the Papajohn Sculpture park in Downtown Des Moines. Curated, designed, and kept for the last 26 years by it's creator Sandra - this Des Moines gem is not to be missed. Open to the public on Fridays Noon-2pm.

Beautiful garden!! We were on vacation and didn’t know this was nearby—great surprise! The fountain, multiple paths, shaded seating area, and multitude/variety of plants were all great. The people working were very friendly and answered all our questions. They said there were probably 2,500-3,000 plants total inside, and every year the take out some and put in some. All kinds from all over are present. • We just happened to be available during the only open hours (Friday 12p-2p), which made it a special treat. We did peer through the “windows” earlier in the week, but it was definitely worth it to go back and see it from the inside. The kids loved it to.
Liz D — Google review
It's not very big like the botanical gardens but they have a huge variety and knowledgeable guides. I enjoyed this more than bigger gardens because of the guides. Meter parking (2 quarters) is right outside the gate on the north. Beautiful sculpture Park is next door. Food and bathrooms, however, were not handy. I think most people would take 45 minutes to an hour to get to the entire garden. They're currently only open from 10:00 to 2:00 on Fridays but it is free. I highly recommend it if you are looking to add some plantings to your yard and need information or ideas. Many of the plants are labeled and it has 22 different dedicated sections such a shade or herb.

This place is so dishonest. I know of a property at 1440 Pioneer rd that can't have sewer hookups because it sits to low and the only way to get sewer connected is a 60k lift station and they are not going to disclose this information so who ever purchase it the land is useless it will also take 10k to fix the front yard.

Such a nice little spot to stop and visit. The lady running it that day was super sweet. The kids loved riding it over and over again. Very well kept. Clean and beautiful. Even us adults went on it and had a great time! Loved that you could see the little musical instruments going as you rode. Nice and shaded as well!

The Des Moines Community Playhouse, located on 42nd Street in Des Moines, offers a diverse range of entertainment for all ages. From musicals and classic plays to children's theater series, there's something for everyone. While it's known for its kid-friendly atmosphere, adults can also find enjoyment in the productions and monthly workshops offered here.
Just got home from seeing the July 2025 performance of Waitress. The acting was superb…from the tender moments to the comical ones. The actors were so good and *perfectly* cast…the nurse had me cackling 😂. And Hannah, the actress playing Jenna, had me full on weeping over a plastic baby doll in one of the final scenes. 🥹 She had us in the palm of her hand with her emotional performance and killer vocal chops ❤️ We are truly lucky to have this theater in Des Moines. I left with that “post-musical natural high” that is one of the best feelings life can offer! I freaking loved this show. Bravo 👏🏼

An amazing place to enjoy a show in Des Moines! The talent here is truly impressive. I recently saw Waitress and it quickly became one of my favorites such a memorable performance. Highly recommend catching a show here if you get the chance!
Jess — Google review
I didn’t go into my first time at DSM Community Playhouse expecting much, and I couldn’t have been more wrong. I was blown away by the quality of the singing, the acting, the production, and the heart of their performance of Waitress. They sold award-winning apple mini pies to tie in with the show and even did a DV shelter toiletry drive to support DV survivors in honor of the show’s theme. Incredible! The actor who plays Jenna is a gem, and the actors who play Dawn and Ogie are both scene stealers. Can’t wait to go again. My only suggestion is to please offer some NA beer or mocktail options—all you had was alcohol and typical “soft” drinks like pop and water. Lots of people are sober or sober curious, and some elevated NA options would be awesome. Thanks for a great time!

Great Shopping Sales. Awesome atmosphere with Displays! Great Customer Service, when you ask a Pro for help in a section of the store, they listen and guide you to the section or piece of product you may want. For instance, I asked one of the Fishing Pros about a real flexible rod ..he came up with a fiberglass rod that he showed me, just perfect. I had looked at Many Different Stores, and hadn't found anything I wanted, until he showed me the rod .. perfection!

Stopped by Bass Pro in Iowa on our way back to Utah from NY. Kinda the same set up as Cabelas which I liked. This way I already know where to go to look for specific things. The kids looked all around. I was just interested in tshirts. Very open. I liked the fishing boats on display. Only thing I noticed was that nobody came up to me asking if they could help. Didn't need it since I knew where I was going, but it would've been nice. Won't hold it against em.

NEVER purchase a gun from the Altoona Bass Pro Shop! They will try to sell you a used gun as new. This all starts while looking for a specific gun online. The Altoona Bass Pro Shop showed they had one available. I went to the store and they could not find it. I was told to purchase it online and it would be available at the store soon. I purchased a NEW one online and several days later got notified it was available. I arrived to pick it up, and the employee I talked to was friendly and told me we had to wait because the lap top computer we needed to do paperwork on was not updated. I had to wait, and wait, and wait until the manager brought out another. After filling out the required paperwork, I notice the box it came in was very beat up and had a "DISPLAY BOX" sticker on it. The gun had rust and dings all over it. I stated, I purchased a NEW gun and this one was not NEW. The employee I worked with, went to get the manager. When he arrived, he acted like there was no problem. I again stated the problem, and he said he would drop the price by an amount NOT EVEN CLOSE to the damage this gun had. Again, the manager acted like this is just how we operate. I refused to purchase it. What upsets me the most is that they thought they could sell this used gun as a new one. From an online order. I will NEVER purchase anything from the Altoona Bass Pro Shop again!

Whether you're part of a league or just looking to enjoy some recreational play, Air Lanes has something for everyone.
Went with a group of 16 with a few Groupons. The staff was really great and the lanes were fun. They even turned off the lights and did black light bowling, even though it was like lunchtime. We got the pepperoni, cheese, and supreme pizzas, which were all pretty tasty. They have a thin crust and came out pretty hot. Overall, we had a great time and would highly recommend

Used to bowl at this place. Loved it then. Some of the staff are friendly but be careful. They are supposed to set up the lane for you. We'll it wasn't ready so I was getting it ready at the screen since I have MANY times before. Then someone approached us telling us we weren't doing anything right and I had somehow disabled the bumpers. First of all the ones he claimed we disabled didn't even have bumpers on them so we were all confused. Had a decent experience when we were bowling though.
Ashton R — Google review
Bowled 1 lane. Employee said we bowled too slow. Guy behind the counter cancelled our lane. Payed $100 for 2 hours. Threw 1 ball too early and they said we threw 3 too early. Cancelled our lane after an hour and a half. Would not recommend.
Amok S — Google review
Finally made it back to air lanes. Had a small birthday party for 8 kids. 200 dollars before pitchers of flat pop. No lane courtesy, sticky floors, rude staff. I asked before coming to make sure cake was okay (birthday party). As my kid is eating his cake, the gm comes over "Doug" and starts a scene about outside "snacks". Really!? Cake! This sad dive alley is no longer an option for our family, sketchy parking lot, no security, rough neighborhood, and the staff fits right in. Overpriced, underserved, and generally unsafe. Icing on the cake, lanes eating balls! See photos!

During winter, the park offers snowboarding, snow tubes, and sledding.
We went to the Renaissance Festival that was held there over the weekend and it was absolutely amazing! The event was very well attended. We walked across a beautiful wooden bridge to actually get into the festival and it was like walking into the Village from Beauty and the Beast. Everything was beautiful it was very quaint there were tons of activities and things going on and all kinds of different people. The food was amazing the prices were reasonable there was a lot of room to maneuver and they had plenty of places to go to the bathroom.

Very fun! For the tubing, the conveyor belt you wait on to get to the top of the hill is a little rickety and you still mostly have to walk to the top so it can get exhausting. We always enjoy Sleepy Hollow though especially for the Renn Faire!

More knights battling and jousting throughout the day and the puppies searching for treasure was a great show as well. The food served in bread bowls is always a treat and the whole cast of characters make it a fun day.

We came here for their Renaissance Faire and had a blast. It wasnt crazy expensive, but there's tons of little shops inside to spend money on! The shows were fun and had high energy! Costumes were fun and made everything very playful. This is more of a fantasy faire compared to a true Renaissance Faire. Nonetheless still had a great time!

The 18-hole course is set amidst sloping and wooded terrain, offering a challenging yet enjoyable experience for golf enthusiasts. The vintage brick clubhouse adds to its charm and houses a pro shop along with a banquet hall.

It had been 30 years since I played Waveland. I was just starting to golf. Waveland has many hills and blind shots to navigate. I lost plenty of balls. I've been getting my nails done here for years and they always do a great job. And they are happy to make corrections to your liking! I also had something stuck under my car and they did not hesitate to help me out. Very kind people, thank you!!

me and my friend came here one week ago today to get full acrylic sets. we did not schedule appointments but we called before and when we showed up, we were the only ones there besides a couple in the back getting pedicures. the entire time we were there no one else showed up besides one more to get a pedicure and for some reason it was still very rushed. both me and my friend have nails that are not correctly fit to our nail beds. the shaping is good, but they were aggressive with the filing. my nail art seemed to be done with little effort or care, and then the nail artist was caught off guard when i asked her to re-do a small part. my friends nails(first two pictures) are very chipped and lifting and it has only been a week. i was unsatisfied with my nail art and filed it off a few days after getting them done, and on top of that, one had already snapped off with little pressure. do not recommend if you are attentive to how your nails look
Lily S — Google review
Got acrylic nails and they charged me at outrageous amount of money for just the acrylic seems a little pricey to me 😠 they were cracks in my nails and so much more. I don’t even wanna explain it. The nail they even gave me on my acrylic didn’t even fit my fingernail. It was like they were trying to rush me out of the store or something. Do not recommend they also take advantage of younger girls they say on the phone 38 but it’s really $60 and they say they charge you for extra long nails but it really wasn’t even that long like I said before do not come 😠

This was the first set since everything opened back up from COVID. They were a very clean place and had a pleasant staff. A group of friend and I went in to all get a full set. We showed them inspiration pictures and they asked clarifying questions and went with it. All of our nails look amazing and we will for sure continue going here. 10/10 recommend
Emily D — Google review
Got acrylics and I wish I would’ve taken a picture bc they were so bad. The shape was very bad, almost like duck nails (i asked for square), they were not smooth and very uneven. i picked a pink color and i think they started painting them with that color but then did a different pink on the last layer bc they were 2 different colors. one nail was very crooked. And the design was horrible. it was just some squiggly lines and they were extremely sloppy. i didn’t notice how bad they were until we left and people were pointing it out that they looked sloppy. I drilled them off as soon as i got home because i was embarrassed that i even walked out of the building like that. $60 for nothing.
Kelsey I — Google review
I came here for the first time a couple days ago and was very disappointed with what I left with. I believe it was $60 which is fine if I liked my nails. Very uneven, messy, rushed. When I brought my concerns up he said “no, it’s fine” ... do not recommend.
Erlin M — Google review
I went and got my nails done almost 2 weeks ago I called and asked how much a fill for acrylic will cost me and they want to charge me for a full set definitely wouldn't recommend going to them especially if you plan on going to get them re done that is beyond ridiculous

You can become a VIP for a little over $100 and it gets you access to an air conditioned bathroom, a seating area designed by Silent Rivers, free food from Gateway Market all day (it was so good), two free drinks and one BOGO drink (so four cocktails for the price of one), and the commemorative poster for that year. It is a great deal and an amazing festival!!

West End Architectural Salvage is a four-story treasure trove of antiques and salvaged goods from around the world, made famous by HGTV's West End Salvage reality show. The century-old building houses an eclectic mix of items, including vintage typewriters, stained glass, old motel signs, and unique furniture pieces. Visitors can also enjoy a coffee bar on the ground floor while exploring the diverse inventory.
Whoa!!! This place is AMAZING!!! We were walking past this place and almost missed it. This was not a planned stop, but as we were walking past, I noticed some stained glass displayed in the windows that caught my attention. I'm so glad we stopped in. I chatted with a few friendly guys who were enjoying their coffee in the café area, but as we were chatting, my attention was drawn to all the antique and vintage items all around us. Four floors (plus the basement) packed with Americana treasures from times long forgotten. If you have any love for history, this is a must stop. You won't be disappointed.

Great staff and a great place to find a hidden gem. When we are back in town I will be back to look for more. This was my first time and I found an old floor grate and turned it into a garden piece for the wife's birthday.
Jay S — Google review
Such a fun and eclectic store! So many treasures can be found on each floor and the staff... The staff is just phenomenal! We are so happy we stopped in on our trip from Washington State. We will be back on our next visit!
James M — Google review
This is a multi-purpose center. They host events, sell coffee, and sell vintage and antique items, mostly furniture. I was there for an event and tried their black coffee, which was very good. They also sell specialty coffee at reasonable prices. It was fascinating to see their vintage and antique items for sale. It's worth checking out if you are interested in any of these things.

This was one of the highlights of my trip to Des Moines! Loved all the good stuff here and I bought some fun things. The people are so nice. I love the coffee shop in front where you can get beer, wine, coffee, all so you can sip and stroll and just enjoy browsing. Loved it and I wish we had something like this in my town.
Lauren T — Google review
This is by far the coolest place in Des Moines. The antiques are incredible and each floor transports you through different decades. There is a wonderfully priced coffee shop and the staff is unbelievably kind. I will go back every chance that I get.
Mackenzie R — Google review
This was a really fun visit and I am glad we stopped in during our weekend trip to Des Moines. There are multiple floors or every vintage, antique, weird, fun, and everything in between here. There is even a coffee shop (we did not get anything though). We really loved walking through here and seeing some old things that we've never came across at any vintage/antique store. You can tell that the person collecting all of this has put a ton of time and effort into bringing all of it into this building. My only complaint was the pricing on everything. In my opinion, and based on numerous other similar stores we've been to, everything was very marked up. Now, I understand most of it is valid and really is worth that, but some items were kind of outrageous. Overall, West End is a super cool store to visit and worth it even if you just window shop. I am sure we will come back and see what new stuff is here when we visit Des Moines again.
Andrew H — Google review
We travel from Texas to visit my wife's dad each year in Iowa and always wanted to stop here. Enjoyed watching the show on TV and wanted to see it in person. It's a very unique experience. Not at all what I expected. Floor after floor of amazing things to see. We spent the better part of the day just wandering around in here. The variety of odds and ends is pretty cool. Definitely worth a visit if you are in or around the area. I think my favorite things here were all the stained glass they had. Plus all the unique things they build.

Conference & Convention Centers
Located in downtown Des Moines, the Iowa Events Center is a versatile complex comprising three venues. The Wells Fargo Arena, with its 17,000 seats, hosts various events including sports games featuring teams like the Iowa Wild and Iowa Wolves. Saylorville Lake & Visitors Center offers outdoor activities such as boating and camping. The center is committed to providing unique experiences for visitors through its flexible event spaces across four floors. Additionally, it hosts popular events like the Des Moines Holiday Boutique.
What a great space! I have been here for two events in the past two years- Blank Children's Hospital Festival of Trees and Lights (Thanksgiving weekend every year) and the Teaching for Impact conference (June of 2023). The festival is an annual tradition for my family. We are so lucky to have great downtown spaces for events like this. The conference was catered for breakfast and the food was excellent.
Kate L — Google review
The Iowa Events Center was an excellent venue for my daughter’s state gymnastics competition. The location was super convenient, with coffee shops and restaurants all within walking distance. There was even a small cafe upstairs that kept us fueled throughout the long weekend. The staff were friendly, well-informed, and very helpful, which made the experience even better. Clear signage made navigating to the event smooth and hassle-free. Overall, a great experience for both athletes and families alike!
Zana S — Google review
Staff is friendly, the venue is huge but easy to get around in. Parking costs too much, but we were able to leave and return on the same day without additional charges. Their security procedures need updating. I was at an event in which attendees were scared and ran to the exits, or wherever they could get away from Hall C.
Prized T — Google review
Probably one of if not the best event space in the state of Iowa. The Expo Center, or Iowa Events Center, has multiple floors for all kinds of events. They have smaller rooms for more close-knit gatherings, and a full on ballroom on the uppermost floor. There’s plenty of restrooms on each floor, places to sit down and rest, and outlets if you need to charge anything while you’re here. It looks like a small place on the outside, but once you’re inside there’s quite a lot of space in here. I came here for the first time for a GalaxyCon convention and it was a really nice experience. I stayed here until pretty late and traffic in downtown around midnight is pretty lowkey, at least on the weekends. I never really felt unsafe either. Friendly staff and people everywhere if you ever need help with directions. Only thing that is a bummer is there aren’t a wide variety of places to eat nearby. There was food offered inside the center but it was kind of bland. There’s maybe 2-3 restaurants within walking distance to the expo center that are actually worth it. It’d be nice if they built some more restaurants in the empty lots nearby.

Was at Iowa Event Center for the 2025 Iowa Deer Classic. The event staff was nice and very patient with the massive crowd for that Saturday. Bathrooms were very clean for most of the day with the massive attendance.

The Des Moines Com was an absolute pleasure. We saw all kinds of talented people along with celebrities who play our favorite characters. The event center really surprised me. There's are so many options for multiple venues.
Darwin J — Google review
Went to the Time Travelers Vintage Expo this past Saturday at the Iowa Events Center. First, had to pay $12 for parking 😳 and that parking wasn't close, by any means. Much walking to get to the actual event. Just a heads up that it would have been a long haul for a disabled person. You could do it, just know it's a ways. Vintage Expo was a trip down memory lane. Was $12 to get in. Fun to see the nostalgia! We found a few "treasures" we bought. Found a couple obscure old vinyl albums. If you don't mind walking (which we don't), the Events Center is a nice venue. Very large and restrooms are clearly marked. I didn't use them but some people wonder about restroom situations.

Rotary Riverwalk Park is a beautiful and unique park located right next to the Des Moines River. The place features a 65-foot fishing pole sculpture, swings, and a playground that lights up at night. It's well worth checking out if you're in the area!
Rotary Riverwalk Park was really enjoyable to walk around during the day and the evening time. There is limited parking on the west side during a weekend night but pretty open during the day on Sunday. During the day, we walked over the huge Bobber statue, walked down near the dam of the river where this is a walking area. We walked the bridge both during the day and night and really enjoyed it. The bridge itself is the Iowa Women of Achievement Bridge which was really cool to learn about. At night we checked out the Robert D Ray Asian Garden (parked on the street) and were able to enjoy that and the view of the river. Overall, this is a really enjoyable area to come check out. It is free and worth your time to see!
Andrew H — Google review
This is a very well kept area with a walking bridge that goes across the river, a large skate park, some art. The trail system has an easy map to follow with some stops. The views are stunning. It was a sunny day when we visited and we took several photos there. If you want to bike, walk run or stroll this is the place to go.

Rotary Riverwalk Park Dam is a peaceful and scenic spot. Perfect for a short walk, relaxing by the water, fishing, or enjoying nature. The area is clean, well-maintained, and great for photos. It’s especially nice around sunset. A quiet little gem in town
Connected B — Google review
Very nice riverfront park, enjoyed watching the skaters, swinging on the swing set people watching. The walk over the bridge was really cool, especially seeing the women achievement plaques at the midpoint. Very scenic. Also liked the Chinese square, there was a trail cutting through there. Unfortunately started raining and we had to cut our walk short but still enjoyed the area.
Shiona D — Google review
This is a beautiful, modern park with walking trails, swings, a skate park, fishing pier, and a stunning pedestrian bridge across the Des Moines River. The bridge crosses over to the Asian Garden, which is definitely also worth a visit. I did not notice any bathrooms but I also did not explore much by the skate park itself, so there may be some farther down from the bridge.
Suzanne H — Google review
I am from ATL, but let me tell you… this park is designed for quality fun time for everyone. You can not be bored. Great place for pictures. Lots of skateboarders too
Esther S — Google review
Could use a picnic area and maybe more along the path to engage kiddos. They had fun at the Asian garden and seeing the dam. Kept them in the stroller as the gating on the bridge seemed a little unsafe for kids.

Additionally, Birdland Park at the north end of the Neal Smith Trail provides opportunities for hiking, biking, and wildlife watching along the Des Moines River. The Mark C Ackelson Trail is a 4.
Took grandson fishing for the first time. He really enjoyed seeing mama ducks and her babies. Nice place to teach him to fish.

I took my daughter here it was absolutely breathtaking! We took lots of pictures on our digital camera and our phones. You can bring your own portable grill or use one of the Park's. There are lots of benches to sit and rest, as well as many tables to enjoy a picnic. I haven't made my way around the entire lake just yet, but it is definitely something I will be completing. Soooo peaceful!

Easter lake is a beautiful wooded getaway for the whole family. Lots of flowers, wildlife, birds, boat ramp, fishing docks, roped off swimming area with beach, volleyball, restrooms, shelter rental, playgrounds, barbecue picnic areas, and walking paths; all located inside the city.

I thought I like the old E lake more n had bigger trees that were all cut out n loud bummer music which i didnt care for. Well now the new E lake park is more better n inviting. No loud disturbing music, no smoking, no dogs on the beach, it's handicap accessible so that nice for those in need. Changing room n good bathrooms like 4. Great sand. Also a floating raft to swim too. So far this is my go to beach. Check it out the new upgrade.
Jackie M — Google review
I hadn't been to Easter Lake for a number of years. The Conservation Board really did a nice job of renovating the park with new trails and pedestrian bridge, very nice.
Pete L — Google review
We were driving near Easter Lake, so we decided to make a stop to see the park. What a beautiful place! We really enjoyed the park area right alongside the shore of Easter Lake that is open to the public. There is a paved bike trail that circles the lake for a trip of just a little over 6 miles. There is also a gravel walking path. Lots of convenient entrances to the park area all around the lake. It was a beautiful fall day with lots of sunshine to light up the fall colored leaves. We can't wait to come back to enjoy the park soon.

The playground isn't disheveled or rustic. It's safe and colorful and has various ways to entertain a child. Swings, seesaw, roundabout, and so many things to climb on. My toddler didn't want to leave, but what child would want to? It may be a little crowded due to how popular it is, but that shouldn't be an issue for most parents. We know how to navigate.
