Imperial Museum is located in the grand 1845 palace of Brazil's first emperor and offers a glimpse into the country's history. The museum was once the summer residence of the Brazilian royal family during the 19th century and was founded by Emperor Dom Pedro II. Visitors can explore this historic site through guided tours, learning about its significance as well as the city of Petropolis, which was established by Dom Pedro II in 1843.
Looooooved it! I felt like the royal family still lived there! Pro: - flows really well - history and layout was perfect - clean and well maintained - free (when I went) - great gardens Con: - average gift shop - had to use slippers on your shoes and floor was super waxed (be careful you can clip) - can't take pictures inside
Brian A — Google review
Access is free on Wednesdays and is a self tour across the palace. It takes about 1hr if you pay attention to the details. Worth visiting in Petrópolis.
Bertha I — Google review
It is a cultural visit to understand how was the daily basics of the emperor and he's wife and way to do so.
Carlos L — Google review
If you were a bad student as me, this is the opportunity to know the history of Brazil. We have just 63 years of kingdom here in Brazil but until our "freedom" or beginning of the democrat republicans there are very interesting issues inside the museum.
D B — Google review
Beautiful palace. Mostly everything written in portuguese You can pay CASH ONLY! The slippers that they give you to put on your shoes are very dangerous and disgusting dirty. Could search for another option for visitors! No photos allowed.
Cristiana F — Google review
Great palace. Free entrance when we went. We had to wear covers for our shoes. Great collection.
Patrick F — Google review
You're required to wear slippers over your shoes to protect the floors, but unfortunately they are one size fits some and you'll likely be pseudo-skating around the museum. Also, you're required to check all belongings before entering, including cameras. Photography is not allowed inside, with or without flash. Other than these minor things, worth the trip! Definitely recommend, just be aware what you're in for.
Garrett P — Google review
Quite interesting to see how decadent the royal family was while their countries (Brazil and Portugal) suffered. The museum is free sometimes and cheap the rest of the time. It would get 5 stars if they allowed photos inside and dispensed with the awkward slippers they furnish you to preserve the hardwood floors.

Casa de Santos Dumont, located in Petropolis, is a museum that was once the summer home of Alberto Santos-Dumont, a pioneering aviator and inventor. The house, built in 1918, showcases his small inventions such as an alcohol shower and meticulously planned furniture. Visitors can observe unique features like stairs with half steps shaped like rackets and low doorways tailored to Santos Dumont's 1.52-meter height.
Tiny place. Learn about Dumont, recommended if you like related topics.

Didn't know this story, but it was the highlight of the whole "Petropolis" tour for me, being that I love aviation.

No pix, no amex. cash, debit or credit only. Great history spot, small (but he was a small guy) great piece of history! Worth the trio!
Brian A — Google review
Nice place, can see why he built a glider to get to the bottom of the mountain. He was a bit later to fly, just after the Wright Brothers.

I went on his birthday and it was very busy, however it was great to learn more about the type of person he was and his lovely house.
Ana B — Google review
Very informative and interesting small museum, one of the best places in Petropolis.
Owen — Google review
The House of Santos Dumont is a great place to visit. I got surprised when I saw how simple he lived behind the big intelligence he had. The history of this great person brings pride of such human and the benefits he brought to the humandade.
Fabio M — Google review
Beautiful site with a rich history and gorgeous scale replicas of Santos' creations, and the original house designed by Santos Dumont himself. The entrance fee is decent, and they offer a video (with English subtitles) that tells the true story of Mr. Dumont. This is a must-visit site for fans of aviation history. Keep in mind the stairs are steep (which is part of the original history of the house), but there is an elevator available for people who have difficulty.

Surrounded by an architectural ensemble that includes landmarks like the Imperial Museum and the Crystal Palace, this historic center offers visitors a charming glimpse into Brazil's rich cultural heritage.
The pillars..stain glass..statues..seating is awesome. Got some moments of silence and prayers. The cathedral stands evident of various influence in the region.. Excellent visit

What a fabulous structure, amazing how the first two meters of the structure is cut stone while the remainder is built with concrete to represent the people. It is in an idealistic location overlooking the river, and is very well maintained. One thing to be aware of is shorts are not the preferred clothing item. An ideal location for reflection and some quiet time.

Cathedral in Petropolis. After their exile to and death in Europe, the remains of the last Brazilian emperor Pedro II and his wife were laid to rest here in marble tombs. His surviving daughter and her French husband are also entombed here. Of interest to those interested in 19th century imperial history of Brazil.

The Petropolis Wax Museum is a relatively new addition to the city, showcasing hyper-realistic wax replicas of both Brazilian and international celebrities. Visitors can expect to see famous figures such as Batman, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Mr. Bean, Nelson Mandela, and Superman alongside important Brazilian icons and leaders. The museum offers a range of characters from historical and political figures to pop-culture icons. Some of the displays even feature scenarios designed around the figures to reflect their contextual significance.
It is a good attraction to visit. Short with lo variety but with great quality. Midrange pricing but lovely.
Carlos L — Google review
This wax museum was ok but very small and with terrible lighting for photos. The whole experience could be better, although the actual wax celebrities are very realistic, almost scarily so! It’s pretty expensive for what it is, although the student discount is good.
Ben J — Google review
We really enjoyed the museum. Small and quaint but greatly executed
Leo C — Google review
Nice wax figures but short exhibition
Éder M — Google review
Very small wax museum, Maybe 30-40 sculptures total, some look almost nothing like who they are trying to portray.

While not accessible to the public, its surrounding gardens offer visitors a chance to admire their beauty and experience a peaceful ambiance. Additionally, within the Cathedral on the premises lies an altar containing relics from St. Magnus, St. Aurelia, and St. Tecla directly brought from Rome.

My husband and I stayed here this past week (from Canada) our sweet Fernando got us a room and blessed us. We had a wonderful time and we were treat so so good ! We would recommend to anyone to stay at this beautiful place ❤️ the breakfast was amazing ! I can't forgot the sweetest of birds here ... thank you again for a beautiful experience ❤️

Overall this place is a decent place to stay if you are not looking to spend a ton. There was 2 of us and our big dog. The Buffet was pretty good, lots of options. The Juice was terrible though, it seems it was watered down to a 90/10 water to juice ratio. Breakfast is till 10am weekdays and 10:30 on the weekends. The Room was mostly okay. Up to date AC unit and a ceiling fan, the shower was nice too, hot water on demand no electric shower. Some of the walls were peeling and the bathroom occasionally smelt of sewer water coming up through the drain. Everything was clean though in the room, no bugs or grime anywhere. There was a dog that barked in the room next to ours for almost 2 hours in the middle of the night. And same thing happened mid day. The staff didn’t do anything to solve it and it was extremely obvious it was happening because it’s a small hotel. The bed and pillows I would say were bellow average to average for comfort. There’s plenty of options for drinks and beer at the front of the hotel to purchase at any time. They also had things in the fridge that’s in the room along with some snacks that you have to pay for as well if you want them. If you have a dog it’s an additional $50 BRL that they don’t disclose when you book the room online.
Brandon H — Google review
The place was cool, the staff were all very nice and it was a safe place to stay. The breakfast every morning was super delicious and had just about everything you can get for a breakfast. Would definitely return.
Eric A — Google review
Nice and simple stay. It was our second time there and everything ran as smooth as the first visit. The location or perfect for those who want to stay at walking distance from the sightseeing places of Petrópolis. The closest place is Crystal Palace, less than a minute walking. Or you can walk about 7 minutes to the Imperial Museum. The continental breakfast is simple but have everything you may need for a morning of walking. The rooms are simple but cozy. If you're traveling in the summer I would recommend one with AC. The restroom has a nice and strong shower. Nood to relax.

Located in the scenic surroundings of Petropolis, Brazil, the Quitandinha Palace is a stately Norman French–style building that once served as a luxury resort. Built in 1944, this opulent palace boasts a rich history and stunning design, blending European elegance with Brazilian flair. It was originally constructed as a lavish casino-hotel complex and later became Dom Pedro II's Summer Palace. Today, it houses the Imperial Museum which showcases an extensive collection of artifacts belonging to the Brazilian monarchy.
Lovely place, with incredible surroundings. Interesting history and a good exposition. It's worth a visit.

What incredible opulence, what a time it must have been to be here during its height of service. This place is straight out of a Wes Anderson movie, or in the shinning! Pro: - clean - massive - well maintained - so many photo ops - easy to navigate - easy parking - free - KID FRIENDLY con: - would have loved to see what the bedrooms looked like, but only bottom floor was accessible

The massive Quitandinha, "temple of gambling," A Stunning former Casino and now a Stately Hotel, Situated in the bloom-bedecked "city of flowers," Petrópolis high in the mountains an hour's drive from Rio, Quitandinha has a breathtakingly view on a hill overlooking a lake just outside of town, very must a place to visit.

Amazing look into the past, beautifully preserved in Hollywood rococo style. The ground floor and gardens are now open to the public and host cultural events. Bonus: the toilets look like they're from The Shining (1980).
Elan G — Google review
The palace is beautiful, but the staff isn’t great at all. I came at 10h to have a guided tour at 10:30. This time, I was at the hall, but at 10:40 I was told that they decided to “skip the morning tour”, and the next one is only in one hour. It’s not the way the tourism should work. I came a long way to see the palace, but this people don’t care about your time nor the cultural heritage they represent. So come with your own guide, or avoid this place at all. Disappointing.
Grigory P — Google review
Beautiful palace, and some couples take wedding photography there. I really liked the round hall with incredibly charming echo. You can add some of your graffiti in the chalk room 😎
Slava S — Google review
It’s a short stop before Imperial Palace that you must stop and visit on your Petropolis trip. As you can see the outside is something out of a village in Switzerland but the inside were all glammed up! Each room has its own personality and characteristic - for a purpose. The kitchen although empty just shows how big and thought through this place once was. There’s a hotel on the top floor which I think would be nice. Petropolis itself is a cozy and cute little town. Very different to buzzing Rio!

It offers a range of trails suitable for various fitness levels, including an easy path along the Rio do Bonfim that leads to natural swimming holes like Poco Paraiso and Poco das Bromelias.
Very nice park. Everything is indicated. Waterfall is marvellous.
Remy P — Google review
What an amazing park. The national park of Serra dos Órgãos is a very pretty park with several hiking trails. The trails are mostly one way up and the same way down, branching from one main trial. There are several pretty water falls. The nature and views are beautiful. At the beginning is a manned information point with toilets, water point and outdoor shower. You can’t park a car in the national park: you have to park your car in one of the private car parkings nearby.
Siegfried B — Google review
Entered from the bonfim side. Easy access road, parking in field a hundred metres or so before the entrance. Friendly helpful staff. Map, toilet, shower, water fountain at entrance. Free entry but you MUST have an ID or you won't get in. Basically one main trail up with side trails to waterfalls with swimming holes. We only went to lower waterfalls as we arrived after lunch, a couple of hours to go up and back down. There is a larger waterfall a couple of Kms higher up. Also, access here to long hard trail over the top but you need permission to do that one and high level fitness I imagine. I only gave it 4 stars because the trail from here, although pleasant with nice stretch through bamboo,, does not give access to jaw dropping scenery. From the other side, with views of the mountains and the finger of God would be a five.

We went there early but on a Sunday, which might explain the negative experience... In my opinion, if you're not interested in taking selfies surrounded by a lot of 20-something or middle aged lame people in high heels (in a garden) and in the middle of plastic "replicas" of Buddha, this place is not worth the 20 reais it costs neither the 45min drive from Petrópolis (of which ~20min of a bad dirt road). The place is beautiful yes, but Rio's Jardim Botânico is way bigger, nicer, and free.

(Translated by Google) In terms of architectural and historical beauty, it is equivalent to the Cathedral of São Pedro de Alcântara due to the context surrounding its construction, which involved the German community that settled in Petrópolis. It is so close to the other, more famous and larger cathedral, that it is worth visiting without hesitation. A hidden treasure.

On the day of the visit, there were some members of the church who guided visitors with information about the German community that originated the church. Congratulations on the initiative. God bless this community! 🙏 (Original) Local histórico, construção modesta e com órgão de tubo. (Translated by Google) On Saturdays and Sundays there is a volunteer project where people from the community tell a little about the construction of Petrópolis and the church, both of which were built by Germans who came from Europe around 1850. It is worth visiting regardless of the region, one of the best tours in Petrópolis, believe it or not.
