Restaurant
Ramen Zundo is a casual Japanese eatery known for its generous bowls of dipping noodles and flavorful broths. The restaurant's specialty is the twelve-hour boiled authentic ramen, with their signature dish being the tsukeman - thick, chewy cold noodles served with hot dipping soup. Customers can also request extra soup to mix with the dipping soup for a unique dining experience.
This place is great! Foods were delicious, staffs were friendly, and the atmosphere was like as if I was actually in Japan! Ms. June is a very kind person with a bright attitude. She welcomed our hearts warmly into the restaurant.

We almost missed this place while looking for a place to eat and I am so glad we didn't. It is tucked away in one of the side alleyways so keep an eye out for it or you will miss it. The seating was a little tight but that contributed to the atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and helpful especially when choosing our items from the menu. The food was delivered quite quickly especially as the place was fairly full. The food was really delicious plus very filling. I am not usually a big fan of Ramen but it was really good. I can highly recommend if you are a fan of authentic Japanese food and even if you are not give it a try. You will not be disappointed.
Brett H — Google review
Lovely Japanese restaurant with a few Vegetarian/Vegan options as well. Small, unassuming place, with a lot of friendly and helpful staff. Note the weekend surcharge of 10%. I loved the Vegetarian Miso Ramen. Dons: the sides of seaweed and edamame were super tiny.
Adya — Google review
Great food, customer service and reasonable pricing. The staff also provide vouchers for returning customers (for extra toppings) which is a great idea! Also, posting a simple review can get you a free drink in addition to the free condiments provided, can’t complain! The restaurant is easily accessible and has plenty of seating, definitely recommend.
Chirag P — Google review
We ordered Tonkotsu Black and Tonkotsu Red - both were really really good! The broth was creamy, flavourful, and I found the Tonkotsu Black to be quite unique (in a good way). It's unlike any other ramen broth that I have tasted. The pork slices were also very tender and have a hint of sweetness to it, balancing the savoury broth. They also provided free drinking water, which is another plus point in my opinion. Will definitely come again 👍🏻
Vania S — Google review
Ramen Zundo is easily one of the best spots in town for authentic Japanese ramen. The broth is rich and flavourful without being overpowering, the noodles have the perfect bite, and the toppings are always fresh and generous. The staff are welcoming and attentive, and the atmosphere is cozy yet vibrant, making it a great place for both a quick meal and a relaxed dinner. Highly recommend the signature tonkotsu ramen—it’s comfort in a bowl!
Tenzin K — Google review
This restaurant became one of my favourite place in Sydney ! There is a lot of choice and for each season you’ll find great meal such as the cold ramen for summer, so refreshing. Definitely a good place :)
Tia H — Google review
We had an early dinner there at 5pm during the long weekend, the place is already packed. We ordered the basic and original tonkotsu and soy ramen, the noodles are quite tendered and the soup bases are very authentic in taste. However the portion is small didn’t fill the stomach. The restaurant is a bit messy, they have a sign asked customer to order and pay at the counter first before seating, however groups of people were waiting to be seated first instead, lack of staff during this peak hours wasn’t great.

Rising Sun Workshop is a one-of-a-kind establishment in Newtown that combines a motorcycle repair shop with a Japanese restaurant. In the morning, locals flock to enjoy the unique breakfast ramen, featuring buttered toast-infused broth, flavorful noodles, an onsen egg, crispy bacon, and charred potato. The fast and lively service adds to the casual cool vibe of Newtown.
Hubby and I went today for lunch to try their ramen and sake. We ordered The Darkness ramen. Noodles was really good with enough chewiness. The quality and quantity of toppings are excellent - generous, and loved the mushrooms (shitake and wood ear). Broth was rich and very umami - ish. Also loved the roasted pork belly - very smoky in taste and very soft. Although I prefer the duck egg topping, it came with an onsen egg (my first time to have it as a topping) which I think I like. The sake and home made ginger beer are good too. Quite reasonable and a good atmosphere. Staff and owner were friendly and accommodating - especially when it comes to telling them that we're sharing one ramen with extra noodles and pork (small eater here), nice to see owner engaging customers.
Yolanda S — Google review
Tried the light ramen here and overall had a good experience. The broth was rich and flavorful, though slightly on the greasy side. The noodles were firm with a satisfying bite, which balanced well with the heaviness of the soup. The restaurant has a unique industrial interior with motorcycle-themed decor — very distinctive and adds to the atmosphere. A solid spot for those who enjoy bold ramen flavors in a stylish, edgy setting.

We were wanting to go here for some time, and finally made it. We figured a solid winters day needed a nice hot ramen. We were not disappointed. Friendly staff and greeting from the front of house. Great atmos and also cx (look inside the bowls, the walls, and the lights) you'll know what I mean. Good prices too. Will come back. We also bought a bag of coffee too.
Joel — Google review
Staffs are super nice and kind. Both light and dark ramen are delicious. Personally I prefer dark better myself, due to the rich soup. And strongly recommend their sticky date pudding. The best sticky date pudding I have ever had without any exaggeration.
JK Y — Google review
Amazing food and service. All the food was very well priced as well, considering the portion sizes were generous. Parking is a pain in the butt most of the time, so you're better off getting there by public transport.
Fernando S — Google review
I ordered the ramen set, but the lady who took my order thought I only ordered the ramen, ending up with a long wait, which is why I had to take away some points. Ramen was pretty alright, just what you’d be expecting from a bowl of ramen, but they killed it with the grilled chicken dish. The crispy skin and the sauce was just on spot, totally loving it! Also giving credit to adding some spicy kicks to the gyoza. It was a bold attempt, but it landed well. The garage was looking sick, definitely worth checking out, and was a cool concept for a ramen place. The dining area is upstairs, pretty cozy up there, love the chilling vibe it gives.
Henry_Ho — Google review
Rising Sun Workshop is one of those places that leaves you instantly impressed. The food is outstanding — bold flavours, generous portions, and a menu that feels both creative and comforting. The ramen in particular is next level, but everything that comes out of the kitchen is done with care and quality. The atmosphere has that cool, communal Newtown energy, blending a workshop vibe with a buzzing eatery. It’s the kind of spot you walk out of already planning your next visit.

Casually walked in to have a coffee and it turned out to be a nice Japanese themed mid morning snack. Great coffee too. Service is genuine and personable. Cool interiors with bike workshop.

Chaco Ramen is a lively and trendy spot adorned with Japanese characters, where patrons can indulge in sake, yakitori, and of course, ramen. The restaurant prides itself on its thoughtful approach to every aspect of the dining experience, from the menu to the decor. This dedication is reflected in their diverse offerings, ranging from classic soy-based ramen to innovative creations like yuzu scallop with Hokkaido scallop and prawn wonton.
I arrived just as their lunch service was wrapping up, but surprisingly, it turned out like the most wonderful experience ever. Especially, the outdoor seating had such a lovely vibe during spring. Fat Soy ramen was delightfully classic (and classic flavours never disappoint). I also tried the Yuzu punch drink, which was incredibly refreshing and quite addictive. Highly recommend this place!
Phuong C — Google review
I have been to this restaurant many times and I have always been impressed with the ramen. This time, I visited around 12:30 pm. A female staff member took my order—I ordered one spicy ramen, one salty ramen, and gyoza. While I was eating, my gyoza never arrived. Even after I finished my ramen, the gyoza still hadn’t been served. I waited another 15 minutes, but it never came, so I asked for the bill. That was when I found out that the staff member never placed my gyoza order at all. What disappointed me the most was that there was no apology from the staff. This was very upsetting, and it makes me not want to come back again. I hope the restaurant will advise its staff to improve their service.
N T — Google review
I got the yuzu ramen, which they said was their signature. For $25 I believe it is on the pricier side, but the broth was rich and delightful (the yuzu was refreshing enough not to be overpowering, and the seafood based broth wasn’t overly fishy.). In fact the broth was probably the best part of the ramen. Noodles were fine and standard. What disappointed me was the scallop. It had a tough texture, quite overcooked, and there was a white debris inside that I had to spit out. The prawn wonton was ok, prawn was nice and crunchy but nothing special. Portion size was also quite unbalanced. I found it difficult to pair my noodles with the toppings as there were too little toppings compared proportionally to the noodles. It was filling but if there were more toppings (doesn’t have to be meat if cost is an issue- could be more veggies) the ramen would be more balanced.
Tessie — Google review
Chaco Ramen is a popular Japanese restaurant that has been around for a number of years (previously Chaco Bar). The venue is very reminiscent of ramen places in Japan, especially the compact size! We got the Bone marrow ramen (special menu) and vegetarian curry. The ramen was a served in a rich miso broth with all the usual condiments including chashu and egg. The bone marrow itself was nicely charred and you get plenty of spring onion. The vegetarian curry was a disappointment though. It wasn’t aesthetically appealing and really wasn’t any better than cooking at home. Overall, definitely recommend giving the ramen a try! Oh and they forgot to place our order of chicken wings, so definitely get them to repeat your order incase.
Danny L — Google review
Visited for a weekday lunch. Arrived around 11.30 and the restaurant was quite empty. Staff is welcoming and polite. Lead me to my seat and offer menu and water. The interior is chill and cozy. There is plenty different angles and corners to appreciate in this space. Ordered Fish Salt and am very happy about this bowl. The broth looks light with the colour but from the first sip I can feel the collagen on my lip. It’s rich in texture and flavour and not heavy in terms fat and salty level. I can almost finish it without feeling guilty. The shrimp wonton is nicely made and I particularly like the little twist on top of them —— the shansho pepper powder. It matches well with the winton and the fish themed broth. Other toppings like the black fungus and leek is adding multiple layers of texture to the bowel with their crunchiness and freshness. The chashu is tender. Will definitely make my way back to complete trying out the whole menu. Edited: Visited another round, this time is fat soy and occy karage. Liked the bouncing and juicy karage. Price is slightly high but acceptable for what it is. Fat soy has light texture and moderate saltiness. The random spiciness brought by sprinkle of white pepper powder adds a fun layer to this steady broth. Chashu is thinly sliced and fell a part when picked up by chopsticks. Edited Oct 2025: Bone marrow miso: not recommended. The marrow did make the broth richer but the toppings are quite separated from the broth. The broth is too salty for me without much other flavours. There’s also heavy taste for Sichuan pepper but it feels quite isolated from the broth. There is plenty of shallots/spring onions on top but again this garnish does not work along with the broth for me.
Z Z — Google review
A very pleasant little place with delicious food. The ramen is not the usual kind – it comes with scallop, which is quite unusual but absolutely delicious. The gyoza are outstanding. Friendly service! Bravo!!!
Ben S — Google review
Easily among the best ramen I’ve ever had. Distinctive and fresh, not heavy and greasy. I really feel lucky that we found this place!
Mike B — Google review
As a vegetarian I’m normally skeptical when going in for ramen because I know how much meat influences a tasty broth flavour, and a great veggie broth can be hard to find. I tried the veggie ramen and added silken tofu and egg for protein and was pleasantly surprised! The broth was super tasty and had me wanting to take the next bit. I loved the flavours - the first time I’ve had a tomato based Japanese ramen. My only complaint is I wish it didn’t end, and I could eat more! 😊

Restaurant
Gaku Robata Grill is a culinary gem that beautifully marries traditional Japanese cooking with modern flair. Nestled in a minimalist setting, this intimate 11-seater offers an exquisite dining experience led by the talented owner-chef duo, Haru Inukai and Shimon Hanakura.
We visited the famous bar-restaurant in Darlinghurst, known for its ramen offerings available exclusively at lunchtime. I tried their special Tsukemen (dipping ramen), and it was a delightful experience. The noodles were thick and chilled, giving them an extra chewy and bouncy texture that was simply perfect. The dipping broth, made with a bonito base, was light, refreshing, and not greasy at all. A side of marinated cabbage added a sweet crunch, complementing the dish beautifully. The pork belly slices were marinated and served as-is, yet they tasted tender and flavorful without any overwhelming fattiness. Adding to the dish’s uniqueness was the crispy seaweed-flavored fried fish cake, which added an extra layer of flavor and texture. This is a dish that feels incredibly refreshing, especially on a hot summer day. The bar’s relaxed and inviting atmosphere further enhances the dining experience, making it a place I’d love to revisit to try other ramen options.

Dinner is definitely overrated especially for the price. We reserved for dinner planning to get ramen but they don't serve ramen at dinner. We asked to cancel but they said they would charge $60 if we cancel. Dinner menu is underwhelming nothing special but the prices are exorbitant. A poke bowl with Wagyu costs about $125 whilst the foie gras Monaka which is the size of a cookie costs $25! Haven't tried the ramen at lunch but definitely wouldn't recommend the dinner menu here. Tip: if you want ramen at dinner and it's past 8-9pm and you're in Darlinghurst go down the road to Yorimichi, they open late till 12am.

I've been coming here for a long time so l feel like l'm part of the furniture. The sashimi normally comes on a bed of diced ice but l just ask them to place it on a bed of small stones - reason, l eat it quickly and l'm a local here. The menu specials are always seasonal and l'm really enjoyed trying the winter time sukiyaki for the first time tonight. I'm not sure if this will be available in the summertime. One of my favourite handroll is the eggplant and its a must try in my eyes. Tonight, due to Sydney's bad weather it wasn't busy but over the years l've seen it go from me just walking in around 8pm a getting a spot at the bar where you can see all the action to sorry Wayne, we are full - l would highly recommend you make a booking these days. Last orders are at 8.30pm. It's a very small restaurant with only one large seating table for around 6 and one for 2 to 3 people. The main bar can seat around 10 people l think and the two side bars facing the street can seat up to 3 people. By the way, they have a good selection of suki which l prefer cold. Tonight l only gave them three stars for the service as one of the waitresses finished early due to the bad weather and the restaurant wasn't busy - normally l would rate them a 4 star service.
Wayne M — Google review
Since we went on a Wednesday, the restaurant didn’t have uni available. The sashimi platter (P2) was pretty underwhelming—nothing tasted particularly fresh, and the snow crab was especially disappointing: overly salty and clearly not fresh, more like low-quality frozen seafood. ❌ The eel (P3) was also a pre-made product, simply thrown on the grill for three minutes. The meat was tough and definitely not worth the price listed on the menu. ❌ On top of that, one of the chefs was casually scrolling on his phone during service. Considering how sushi is made with direct hand contact, this was incredibly unsanitary and unprofessional. I don’t even want to think about how many bacteria were on his phone case and screen. The foie gras mochi (P4) was the only dish I actually enjoyed—it tasted great, but it’s very rich, so you can’t eat too much of it. This is the only item I would recommend. Now, for the worst part: the beef tongue (P5). I was shocked to find that instead of being grilled, it was slow-cooked and served in a thick, sour-tasting sauce with mushrooms that had zero mushroom flavor. The tongue itself was absurdly thick—almost like a brick—and poorly prepared, with visible taste buds on the edges (I was too disgusted to take a photo, and even thinking about it now makes me feel sick 🤢). To make matters worse, the wagyu salad had unwashed greens, which was completely off-putting. At that point, I just wanted to leave. We finished with a caramel ice cream roasted sweet potato for $20, but it was nothing special. The total bill for two people was $254—definitely not worth it. If you’re thinking of coming here, I’d only recommend the foie gras mochi and nothing else.

Been meaning to come here quite a while to try out the ramen here but also heard that the tsukemen was available so I had to have both. The tsukemen was very good. It was a fish based broth for the dipping sauce. I can't say the noodle were too much to my liking but together it was alright. The duck yuzu ramen was super good really like how they added the fried veggie for some added texture. Duck was cook super nice and loved the wonton. Went here for a lunch on Thursday and there was a line before opening. Soon after it was full but there was no line. Be sure to check menu as lunch and dinner serve different things.
Tony T — Google review
Went for chef tsukasas special event popup. He's very cheerful and cute. The ramen broth was delicious and the sushi very fresh. The counter sitting is good for watching chefs at work, but would be better if the proximity to other diners was a little more spaced out and if a crate or something was provided under the stools to put our stuff. We were in and out in 30mins.
Denise ( — Google review
Since Yelp was a platform for food enthusiasts to discover exceptional dining experiences, I have not returned to this establishment. Today, I had lunch with duck ramen. The ramen was satisfactory, but I found the broth to be excessively light for a duck consommé. Nevertheless, it was pleasant with a subtle yuzu flavour. The addition of tempura vegetables provided a delightful crunch. However, I found the smoked duck breast to be overcooked. I prefer my duck to retain a slight pink hue.

RaRa Ramen is a trendy noodle house that perfectly blends industrial-chic decor with a lively atmosphere, making it an inviting spot for ramen lovers. With sidewalk seating and an open kitchen, diners can enjoy the spectacle of skilled chefs crafting delicious bowls right before their eyes. The original location in Redfern draws crowds eager to savor authentic umami-rich ramen made from fresh broths and Hakata-style noodles prepared daily on-site.
Walked past this place on our way to Mountain Culture brewing. After a few brews decided some spicy soup had to do the trick! Super easy to reserve a table online for an hour later and the staff were so lovely and helpful. Amazing brothless soup with thick noodles and gooey sauce, and I had a chilli and garlic tonkotsu. Recommend giving the ramen a good stir when you receive it otherwise it’s a spicy dopamine adventure ;) dinner for two plus a beer and highball was about $70 total. Worth it for the amazing late night feed. We don’t live in Sydney but would happily return if we came back.

After a nice workout session, me and my friend(from Japan)decided to try this place based on his recommendation. The place was quite busy but we managed to get the seats quickly. I ordered spicy chicken ramen which was really yum. We also shared dumplings which were nice too. Was happy to be there to chase more authentic taste of ramen in Sydney.

Rara Redfern has always been a solid favourite—great vibes, friendly service, and usually very tasty ramen. But the last couple of visits have been a bit disappointing. The noodles were all clumped together and overly starchy, which really took away from the experience. Hoping it was just a few one-offs and they’re back to their usual standards soon, because the atmosphere and staff are still spot on.

Taste is average, nothing special. Service was friendly and efficient. Japanese ramen is on the lower end of the scale in terms of value for money, prices are on par with other ramen places around town. We ordered 2 bowls of ramen and a chicken karage and it came to $65 including card surcharge(they don't accept cash).
Jackson Z — Google review
Upbeat and such a fun vibe with quick arriving and delicious food. The truffle karaage mazesoba was creamy, rich and satisfyingly savoury. The pork gyoza was crisp with a balanced dipping sauce. Food was reasonably priced and service was polite and efficient, looking forward to the next visit already.

Recommended by friends, we made a trip to try the ramen here. The karaage was amazing – juicy, tender, and perfectly seasoned. Unfortunately, the ramen was quite disappointing. Both bowls had bland broth with no depth of flavor, and the noodles were tasteless. The black garlic ramen used the same tonkotsu base, which also lacked the rich pork-bone aroma that tonkotsu soup usually has. On the plus side, the eggs were nicely cooked. The staff confirmed this was their standard taste and even offered to remake a bowl, but we declined as we were in a hurry. Overall, we enjoyed the karaage but were let down by the ramen. We will not go again.

I really enjoyed my time at rara. The overall package of the ramen was really nice surprisingly. The noodles were thin and had a nice bite to it and the soup was well balanced. The karaage was decent but the chilli gyoza was really nice. Would consider coming again for some ramen. Consider reservations as they don't have a lot of space or be prepared to wait.

Delicious Pork Chashu Rice Bowl. There was a dollop of spicy sauce on top that I mixed through the bowl and it was perfect! (I have a low spice tolerance). Pork gyozas were also incredible. 10/10 Good vibes. It was busy at 5pm on a Tuesday and we walked-in (2 people) and were seated at the bar. No issues. Great service and honestly plenty of room.

Ramen restaurant
Bones Ramen is a cozy 20-seat restaurant located on the border of Potts Point and Rushcutters Bay. Opened in early 2022, it is led by Michael Mu Sung of Farmhouse and Jeremy & Sons. The restaurant prides itself on using fresh, local ingredients and making its own broths and soy seasoning in-house. The menu features dishes like rich and creamy chicken baitan stock ramen and a vegetarian broth ramen that stands out as a clear winner.
I loved this. My first time having actual ramen instead of the instant stuff and I'm glad it was here. The chicken was so tender and juicy it was heaven, it was art in a bowl. We got the chicken ramen, shiitake ramen, and chicken karaage which made my partner and I stop talking completely... we just sat in silence with our minds blown by how amazing it was. You honestly couldn't go wrong with this place. Staff were lovely, the restaurant itself was small but incredibly well laid out with a wonderful atmosphere, and the food was to die for.

Bones Ramen is a cozy spot with friendly staff who make you feel right at home. The ramen is tasty, with a light and flavorful broth, but the portion sizes are a bit small for the price. If you’re after a place with great service and don’t mind spending a little extra, it’s worth checking out.

This small ramen shop is tucked away from the busier Kings Cross strip. They have ramen dishes and also some side/starter dishes which one should consider. The ramen was very good, nice umami flavour with the rich broth, and the accompaniments are equally good. The bavette steak is a hidden gem on the menu. It was a very good steak, perfectly cooked with a nice sear. The sauce is full of flavour and the shredded fried potato is so nice with the steak. Overall an excellent ramen joint!
E — Google review
It’s my second time here and the ramens never disappoint. Decided to go out of the box this time and ordered the Mazesoba instead. The pork belly mazesoba was really tasty, while the other vegetarian mazesoba, while quite tasty with the yolk, is missing that umami punch. Other dishes worth trying are the bavette steak & chicken karaage. Bones regularly updates the ramen flavours according to the season so, until next time!

The tofu ramen is rich and creamy, and the prawn toast is fun and delicious. the vibe is relaxed and welcoming, with genuinely lovely service. It’s walk-in only, so expect a bit of a wait at peak times, but it’s absolutely worth it.

Lovely ramen spot with Japanese touches and plenty of light. You can sit indoor or outdoor. I tried their Tokyo-men, presentation was on point, highlighted by variety of flavourful toppings. Nice noodle elasticity. My only criticism is the broth, it was tad salty. Overall, I enjoyed the ramen bowl.
Edelicious B — Google review
I would say the ramen here has a modern twist! The broth is on the thinner side, kind of like a tom yum soup, which I actually prefer. However, you might expect ramen to have a thicker broth. Overall, the food is tasty! While there isn’t a huge wow factor, I really enjoyed that the broth isn’t too heavy. The karaage chicken was decent but didn’t stand out compared to other ramen places I’ve tried. The portion of ramen is just right for one person—not too big, but satisfying. The place is clean and tidy, both in the kitchen and the dining area. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, and the staff are super friendly and helpful with taking your order. You can really feel the responsible service here!
Satheesh R — Google review
As a fan of clear broth the Tokyo-men meets my expectations. It is made of Japanese shoyu and pork lard, which is both umami and meaty but in a more refreshing way We had some tasty crudo as starter, the ramens are definitely top tier in Sydney and they even made their own fish cakes

Nestled in Northern Sydney, Ryo's Noodles is a charming little eatery that has become a staple for lovers of authentic Japanese cuisine. This cozy restaurant specializes in classic dishes like ramen, chicken soup, and rice meals, all served with warmth and friendliness. Since its inception in 2003 by owner Ryo Horii—who aimed to bring the flavors of his hometown Fukuoka to Australia—Ryo's Noodles has garnered a loyal following.
I used to come here a decade ago, and it’s amazing to see that the quality is still just as excellent. The ramen is still the best—rich, flavorful broth and perfectly cooked noodles. The pork was unbelievably tender, melting in my mouth with every bite. The karaage chicken was spot on—crispy, well-seasoned, and served delicious mayo. Definitely a must-visit for any ramen lover!

Tried something different to our usuals as it was a warm day. The weather still brought a queue (approx 20-25 min wait). The waiting time allowed us to decide what to eat and we ordered straight away when we sat down. Food came quickly. Pictured are salad noodles, tsukemen, karaage chicken and Tokyo soy chicken. Would recommend all the above. Salad noodles quite refreshing with veggies and soy dressing, it came in a large bowl and I thought I wouldn’t be able to finish it. Karaage very good, didn’t feel oily. Tsukemen is my favourite ramen at the moment. Tokyo soy chicken is consistently on the top 5 most popular orders for good reason, clear broth. Our group of four sat on one side of a communal table, separated by a covid screen from another family on the other side. Cosy but it worked. Air conditioned inside. There was still a queue when we left.

Got dipping noodle and pork and fish noodle, great noodle texture, great flavour. I personally think the soup is slightly too rich but that’s just me. The fried onion topping is diff and a nice touch. The pork and fish noodle didn’t have bamboo shoots. Fried chicken is a standout, juicy, thin and crispy skin even after sitting for a while, good flavour. Would definitely visit again solely based on the flavour. The very reasonable price is a cherry on top. No weekend surcharge!
Sunny L — Google review
Ryo’s noodles is a well known staple in the area. Lines are usually long so it’s sometimes better to be early. Opted for the Tsuken and the Fish ramen. Both were nice but I personally prefer the flavours and broth of a different local ramen restaurant. The fish ramen does taste like fish, a little bit more on the canned tuna flavour spectrum. The restaurant is small and cozy in an old heritage building, it definitely has character. Staff are nice and friendly.
Herpius D — Google review
This is the OG ramen place in Sydney and they always hit different. If you like rich flavour, TSUKEMEN the legendary dipping noodles. I cannot recommend enough!!! Also in terms of queuing, we came at 5:40pm on a weekday, got the last table for 2pax. Left at around 6:30pm it’s already couple of people waiting outside.
Kim G — Google review
We’ve been regulars at Ryo’s Noodles for years and have always loved it. Tonight, after rushing over from school, work, and home, we were excited for our usual meals. We ordered the Spicy Pork Ramen, Chicken Soy Cold Dipping Noodles with extra noodles, Chicken Karaage, Gyoza, and drinks. The food itself was fine, but the service from the shorter lady with a ponytail who brought our order was disappointing. I mentioned when ordering that we usually like the dipping sauce divided into two bowls. She said that was fine, but when the food arrived, there was only one small bowl of dipping broth. When I asked if it could be divided, she replied “ONLY ONE” in an annoyed tone. She eventually split the small bowl into two, leaving each of us with barely any broth. By the time we got to the extra noodles, the broth was bland and tasteless. When I asked another server if we could have more, I was told we would need to pay extra. I understand prices change and staff have different ways of doing things, but after so many visits, it was disheartening to be treated like we were asking for something unreasonable. A little friendliness or flexibility would have gone a long way, especially from someone serving loyal customers. We’ve always loved the warmth and care from Natalie and the male server, and tonight made us miss that even more. We will definitely return because we love Ryo’s, but we hope the welcoming service we’ve always known comes back.
Gracie K — Google review
Went there before 6pm on a weekday and we got seated right away. Loved their pork soy broth (#2) and fish pork broth (#6)! Limited seating inside but it was cosy and it transported us back to Japan. Went out at around 7pm and there was already a long line outside

20 years ago when I was still in university, because of limited I would drive from university to Ryo’s noodles for their ramen. Back then I love their noodles as it was big servings and tasty. 20 years later, coming back again remind me of those taste, still very gourmet and hearty.

Gumshara is a renowned food court spot known for its generous servings of ramen, featuring a thick and MSG-free pork broth. The restaurant's new location in Chinatown has attracted long lines of eager patrons, drawn by the seven-day process to create the tonkotsu ramen's pork stock using only water, miso, and 120kg of pork bones. Customers praise the rich and flavorful noodle soup that results from this labor-intensive method.
Hearty ramen worth the try. Cosy ambience with a bit of a takeaway feel, but the food more than makes up for it. Tried their unique dipping noodle style - the broth is thick, rich, and incredibly hearty. It gets busy with queues at night, so it’s best to swing by off-peak, either before or after work. A must-try for ramen lovers in Haymarket.
Gary P — Google review
Really great ramen in Sydney! When I first tried Gumshara, I found the soup a bit too thick and rich for me. Luckily, they provide extra stock at the toppings counter, so you can adjust it to your preferred consistency—such a genius idea! They also offer a wide variety of toppings, allowing you to customize your ramen exactly how you like it, even if you stick with the standard tonkotsu broth. I enjoy mine with plenty of spring onions and a splash of vinegar at the end to cut the richness. Definitely a top ramen spot in Sydney. Pro tip: if you’re a bigger eater, order rice to enjoy with the leftover soup! Another Pro tip: There’s usually a long queue, so come early or be prepared to wait around 30 minutes to get in.

Highly Recommended by my partner and coffee tutor for many times, I tried this mega noodle with my partner - it was super tasty, umami, natural, rich and authentic😋 I didn’t taste artificial ingredients in it. Every thing in this bowl had its own unique texture and flavour while being harmonious with each other. The soup was very thick, creamy and healthy. I also tried to dilute it with pork bone soup and fish soup separately - both were still pretty tasty and unique. Service was friendly and nice. The environment was also clean and cosy. Though we waited in line for a while, it definitely worth.

Gumshara Ramen is definitely one of the more unique ramen spots I’ve been to — especially with their no MSG broth and signature thick, rich style. If you like your ramen heavy and hearty, this place will be right up your alley. I ordered the pork rib ramen, which came with a massive piece of meat that did fall off the bone (kind of), though the quality of the meat itself was just okay. Still, it’s a cool and fun dish to try, and the portion is generous. The broth is what really separates Gumshara from other ramen joints — thick, flavourful, and comforting — though I found myself getting full after just a few sips since it’s so rich. The noodles were plentiful, but I would’ve preferred them a touch softer. One thing I really liked is how you can customise your bowl with unlimited spring onions and condiments — makes it easy to tweak the flavours just how you like them. Service was quick and friendly, and the place was packed, which says a lot about their following. Prices are a bit steep (around $25 a bowl), but you can tell they put effort into the broth. Overall, a solid ramen spot and a nice change-up from the lighter styles you usually find — definitely one for those who like their ramen rich, thick, and full-bodied.
Christopher W — Google review
Braving the 45+ minute wait in the middle of winter was absolutely worth it the moment our ramen arrived! The broth was rich, deeply flavourful, and served in a generous portion. Every spoonful was comforting and satisfying. A bonus? They offer a great range of condiments for customers to help themselves to, plus two types of additional broths on the side—perfect if you prefer to adjust the saltiness or richness of your ramen to your taste.
April — Google review
Super rich broth, nice flavour, thick wheat noodles, delicious ribs and chashu, huge portions. Might be a bit rich and thick for some, but you'll walk out full with the portions they're serving. Can be a lengthy wait to get in (30min-1hr), though, and there's no table service. Well stocked topping station and fun Japanese soft drink options.
Lukas — Google review
Fabulous. I eat and cook a lot of pork. This is the real deal. No punches pulled on the flavour and richness. Not for the (pork fat) feint hearted or the menu modification crowd. Eaten here many times, but it has been a few years. I think they have gotten even better, or I just really needed ramen. I respect that they control entry to ensure quality and service speed. The cookery is exemplary. The simplicity of the broth that is rich and creamy is only achieved by a long slow cook and quality ingredients. The pork cuts are perfectly cooked. The condiments and add ins are excellent. Japanese kimchi, pickled cabbage chilli side delicious. A-class noodles. Perfect bounce, flavoursome. This is serious cooking and dedication to a dish and a just few variations that you just don’t see often enough. I love that you return the tray when finished, as a perfectly satiated guest it feels like the least I can do. The hospitality world has it tough, I have the utmost respect that the team here run a tight and efficient ship, they explain the process and rules/way things work. I will gladly oblige for such delicious and well cooked food. It is some of the best food I have eaten in a restaurant. (A well travelled chef myself, so I don’t offer that compliment lightly.) Congratulations on keeping small enough to hold to such a high standard. I have tried to get back my last few visits to Sydney, but it didn’t happen, to have such a delicious, soul warming meal, that hit all the right spots this evening was just what I needed. There was a small queue at 5pm, the place is obviously popular. I posted a review which I don’t do that often, in the hope other real cooks and eaters might read it and decide to go. This place deserves to be successful and remain so. You should think about eating here as being as (or more) interesting, delicious and special as the glitzy hatted restaurants with harbour views. Thank you team. 🙏🥰😍🍜🍜🇯🇵🇦🇺

Gogyo Surry Hills is a modern Japanese ramen bar with a lively ambiance and a cocktail selection. Originating from Japan, this casual-chic restaurant in Sydney offers an experience that begins with drinks, appetizers, and ends with their signature Kogashi-style ramen. The charred kogashi miso ramen is a standout dish, known for its unique charring technique that infuses aromatic and bittersweet flavors.
This restaurant has a warm, stylish atmosphere — perfect for meeting friends, family gatherings, or a relaxed dinner. The menu offers a great variety, from fresh sashimi and rich, flavorful ramen to comforting Japanese curry rice and creative, beautifully plated dishes. Prices are reasonable and the taste is consistently delicious. The staff are friendly, attentive, and always smiling, making sure drinks are topped up and everything is well taken care of without having to ask. Comfortable seating and soft lighting make the dining experience even more special. 💡 Perfect for: • Catching up with friends • Family dinners • Casual drinks and dining Overall: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great flavors, lovely atmosphere, and excellent service — definitely a place worth returning to.

Owned by the Ippudo group. A little more fine dining style. Nice ramen soup, probably better than expected. But I feel the noodles are not as nice as in Ippudo. The ramen egg is just a regular boiled egg with no flavouring, not an ajitsuke. The curry rice is also nice. Well made katsu. Nothing is out of the ordinary but everything is as expected. Comfortable surroundings and seating. Fairly priced for the value.

Decent Japanese restaurant with a good vibe. Nice ambience etc. Ramen was standout with the tonkotsu ramen being my favourite. Appetisers are good too 4/5. Only think I would say is severe was really slow. We went in on a Thursday and it took a while for an our group of 9 to be served. Aside from that, decent place!

Lovely atmosphere & vibe of this place. Dimmed lighting & not too loud. The Gyoza was lovely but could’ve been crispier. The karage chicken was beautiful & loved the kombucha aoili with it. The wagyu beef spring roll was delicious (taste like a cheeseburger spring roll). The Pork Ramen (extra special portions) was delicious, very flavourful & loved the sprouts & taste. Service 4/5, wish the waiters came over a bit more so we were able to ask for more water & napkins. Overall a great place & likely to return.

Spicy tonkotsu was fab, I loved it but my friend had the miso and it was more like a gravy than soup base - my friend didn’t like it very much. Great flavours though.

Cute place! Went here on a Saturday night. Very good restaurant to have a date, dim and ambient. The lamps were nice. Place was clean and bathroom was nice. Food was a bit pricier and tasted ok. I got the curry and karaage, for $23 the portion was a bit small and it lacked a bit of sides.

A great 'fancy' ramen place within Surry Hills which offers a comfortable atmosphere and an upgrade in quality. We arrived on a weekend lunchtime and there were three tables worth of people ahead of us waiting for opening so that gives you an idea of its popularity. The restaurant gives off a classy and airy vibe which is unusual for a ramen place - which is a great thing. The food itself was great, we had the crisp fresh cucumber starter, wagyu spring rolls a miso based ramen plus a tonkotsu one. The soup bases make or break ramen and in that case, it was great. Size wise, it was on the reasonable size but not overly big portions. You can add toppings to your tastes though. The spring rolls were an amazing starter and the cucumber had a great sauce which makes you want more. Overall a great experience a day I wish I tried the soft serve that was on offer.

Nestled in the vibrant St Leonards Square, Sekka Dining is a polished Japanese restaurant that brings a fresh twist to the ramen scene. Created by renowned chef Hideto Suzuki, this izakaya-style eatery offers an exciting menu that goes beyond traditional fare. While you can certainly indulge in classic ramen dishes like tonkotsu, it's the innovative specials that truly showcase Suzuki's culinary flair.
One of my top 3 Japanese restaurants in Sydney. The kitchen is very similar to those in Japan with chefs with a passion. We ordered the chicken wing gyoza, wagyu skewer, pork belly skewer, scallop, pork and prawn ramen (be warned, it is spicy) and the duck ramen. Everything was delicious but the prawn ramen dressing could be a little less intense.
Arz E — Google review
Must try the hojicha smoked duck ramen. I have this on almost every occasion and you can not go wrong with this choice. 😋 The black garlic oil is also a lovely fragrant addition but it seems they have removed it from the menu. Also what happened to the wagyu cheek ramen? That was fantastic too! I also love the wagyu tartare and the sashimi selection. If you're here for dinner then you also must try the chicken wing gyoza with prawn and truffle paste. Super delicious! 😋 Those are my favourites listed above and my reason for coming back time and time again. That's why I'm happy to give them 5 stars even though not everything I've tried is fantastic. The chawanmushi was good but at the price point I'm happy to have tried it but won't order it again. Same goes with the Hokkaido scallops. The edamame is a no for me. None of us liked that the pods were still attached to the stalk and even though they were meant to be fresh(er) I couldn't appreciate the difference. The braised wagyu ox tongue lunch set was bitterly disappointing. My friend ordered this and she was so upset that she hadn't stuck with the duck ramen like the rest of us. I sampled it and sympathised with her. Now with the earl grey custard - I've had it three times now. First two times, wow! The last time, however, either something went wrong, as the texture wasn't quite right or they had changed their recipe. Anyway, this place is popular, so bookings are recommended. We always park at St Leonard's Square (Wilson parking) on Nicholson St. Recently, they have changed their pricing structure and you need to validate your parking (via car registration). We did so at the restaurant and it was straightforward.

We had an unexpectedly wonderful family gathering tonight. Initially, my husband tried to book a table for 10 by phone, but unfortunately, the call wasn’t answered. So he went ahead and made an online booking for 8 people instead, as the system only allows a maximum of 8 guests. When we arrived and explained that we actually needed seating for 10, including space for a baby bassinet and a high chair. The staff were incredibly thoughtful and accommodating. They quickly arranged a new table for us, and we were truly grateful for their kind and efficient service. There were so many tempting options on the menu that we ended up ordering a wide variety of dishes: assorted sashimi, toro, green apple salad, chawanmushi, grilled prawn and pork belly, chicken mid wing gyoza, pork gyoza, wagyu skewers, pork belly and zucchini skewers, smoked duck ramen, and seafood sashimi don. We were especially impressed by the chicken mid wing gyoza. Each wing was fully stuffed with a delicious mix of chicken, prawn paste, and truffle. Freshly fried to order, the skin was perfectly crispy while the filling remained juicy and flavorful. The chawanmushi was another standout, silky smooth and generously topped with fresh sea urchin, prawn, and pipi. Every spoonful was packed with umami and seafood goodness. Lastly, the smoked duck hojicha ramen really hit the spot. The duck breast was smoky and salty, the soup was sweet but not overpowering and the ramen was cooked medium. We also liked the little bit of Sichuan peppercorns. It was a very warm, tasty and satisfying meal in the winter. We truly recommend this place to everyone, you don’t need to fly to Japan to enjoy such high-quality Japanese food.

The pork bone ramen and fried chicken were delicious. The orange soda juice was a bit bland and not recommended. The sauce was a bit spicy, so it might not be suitable for children. Adults will enjoy the delicious Japanese food.

5 stars to the chef! Sashimi was next level, loved the salmon belly and the toro just melted. Chicken wings, zucchini and ramen — always spot on.

The noodles was too soft and I wasn’t quite like the Sichuan peppercorn flavour from the soup. The chicken wing dumpling was very tasty but the fillings might not fully been cooked. The service was very good and the staff were very friendly. The overall dining experience was good.
Christy L — Google review
Be prepared for poor service and incapable manager. I waited 40 minutes for my ramen — everyone else at my table got their food earlier (not even at the same time), and I was left waiting with no explanation. The logic behind their service order is honestly ridiculous. Food was good, but definitely not worth putting up with this kind of service. (Doesn’t clear the finished dishes at all till our dessert) We booked a table of 3 for dinner and were seated at the drink bar. It was 15°c and windy outside, we politely asked the staff to close the door behind us, but they refused. The excuse? That closing it would channel wind toward another table. Honestly, it felt like they just didn’t care. The staff came across as CONCITED and unhelpful (Ren)— zero flexibility, no real effort to make the experience comfortable. Really disappointing, especially for a Japanese place where you expect better hospitality.

Good points: the Spicy Ebi ramen was phenomally good! The broth was so flavoursome with so many prawns! One of best ramen I've had! Bad points: Service was a little slow at first. I personally don't like booths as they're hard to get out of, you have to pass down dishes and generally are uncomfortable. Despite this, I will definitely be coming back for the food!!

If you're on the hunt for a delightful Japanese dining experience in Sydney, look no further than Ichi-ban Boshi. This modern noodle house has been a beloved staple for over two decades, serving up steaming bowls of ramen that keep locals and visitors alike coming back for more. With locations in both the bustling CBD and Bondi Junction, it's not uncommon to see eager diners lining up outside its doors during lunch hours.
We seriously love this place — we come almost every week! We don’t even live in the city, but we happily drive 30 minutes just to eat here. Every time we visit, we always order the cold udon. It seems like not many people know how good it actually is. It might look simple, but the taste is amazing. We’re also slowly trying other items on the menu, and everything so far has been great.🍜 Also one of our top favorites is the fresh salmon — it’s honestly better, fresher, and thicker than what you’d get at many high-end restaurants. We’re truly thankful for this restaurant and hope they keep making food just the way they do now. Please never change!🤍

If you’re craving authentic Japanese flavours, this little gem of a restaurant seriously hits the spot. It may be a bit on the cosy side (read: packed with happy diners), but that’s usually a good sign—and in this case, it definitely was! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was inviting. The Japanese-inspired decor was simple but beautiful—wooden accents, lanterns, and traditional touches that made it feel like a tucked-away spot in Tokyo. It’s the kind of place where you forget you’re in Sydney for a moment. Now onto the main event: the ramen. Absolutely delicious. The broth was rich and full of depth, the noodles had that perfect springy bite, and the toppings were fresh and well-balanced. Whether you’re a ramen aficionado or just dipping your toes into Japanese cuisine, this bowl delivered big time. You can tell care was put into every detail of the dish. Despite how busy it was, the service was surprisingly quick and very polite. The staff moved efficiently and with the kind of quiet friendliness that makes you feel looked after without being fussed over. It’s clear the team knows how to handle a crowd without sacrificing quality or warmth. If you’re looking for a quiet, spacious dining room, this might not be your scene—but if you’re after flavour-packed food, speedy service, and a true Japanese vibe, this is absolutely worth a visit. It’s perfect for a casual meal out or even a spontaneous weeknight dinner when you’re craving something satisfying and comforting. I’ll definitely be back to explore more of the menu—and maybe snag a seat during a quieter time!

It's been perhaps over 5 years since we were last at Ichi-ban Boshi. Amazingly, the food is still good, and reasonably-priced. We were impressed by the attentiveness of the wait staff, who quickly brought a basket for our bags when they noticed us struggling. The ramen reminded us of Ichiran's in Japan (though the broth isn't as flavourful). The beef is charred to perfection.

I came here with trepidation. It has been a very long time since I visited Ichiban. From memory the ramen was average but the other food was decent. That's why I ordered the omurice and tamagoyaki. To my surprise they met my expectation. The omurice was definitely carried hard by the sauce but it was decent. I sorta like the tamagoyaki was larger than I expected and was quite wet? I dunno how else to describe it. But it was ok. To this day people still love Ichiban and people line up for the shop. They've definitely made the shop look nice and I like how the ipad was in built into the table.

The broths are light yet still full of flavor, not heavy or overwhelming, which makes them very easy to finish. The spicy miso ramen had a nice kick without being too harsh, and the chashu was tender. The fried chicken ramen was also solid, with juicy chicken pieces that paired well with the soy-based broth. The matcha latte was creamy and not overly sweet, which was a nice balance alongside the ramen. It also came with a serving of brown sugar on the side so you can control how sweet you want it, which is a nice touch The setting has a lively atmosphere with a unique wooden frame design down the middle, giving it a modern but cozy feel. Service was friendly and food came out quickly despite how busy it was. Overall, a good spot if you’re after ramen that doesn’t weigh you down but still hits the right notes on flavor.

Overall: 5/7 Very nice ramen joint with good variety of dishes and soup bases. Wouldn’t say it’s anything exceptional, nor particularly cheap, but it’s a safe and reliable pick for anything on the menu. Standout items include their sukiyaki beef entree, sashimi (exy), tonkotsu and karage. Cheese karage curry: 4/7 Curry is very thick, flavourful. But perhaps too much so. Generally don’t find it too valuable to get curry outside. Tonkotsu ramen: 5/7 Very rich, slightly thick broth. Good ratio of toppings soup and noodles. Yakiniku bowl: 5/7 The beef here is always quite good, and this set comes with quite a lot of beef topping the rice. Good Unagi rice box: 6/7 Definitely comparable to Yayoi. At a lower price point but without the chazuke element. The eel isn’t too thick, but thick enough for good mouthfeel - also not too fatty. Sauce is good with rice. Wonton ramen: 6/7 Really good actually, thicker noodles and a light soup. Wonton also quality - bouncy skin and plump prawns
Adam C — Google review
Tsukemen taste is very terrible, DO NOT order it, the sauce it's just pure soy sauce and vinegar, I didn't taste any borth favours, I suggest just remove it from the menu. Gyoza taste ok, but put too much vinegar at bottom of plate, vinegar is too strong cover up the favor of the food, I don't remember Japanese people eat that much vinegar too, I don't know why this restaurant add a lot vinegar in a lot of dishes, even in Karaage as well Not happy with the food Grill chashumen is ok.

Yasaka Ramen is a trendy Japanese restaurant with stylish decor and a lively atmosphere. The menu features a variety of ramen options, including tonkotsu with miso, salt, and soy seasoning choices, as well as special flavors like black garlic and extra spicy ramen. The broth is rich in flavor, the noodles are firm yet silky, and the eggs are perfectly seasoned.
One of the best Japanese ramen in Sydney. Really love the pork bone soup. Have tried many times before, it time we had mashi mashi king ramen which was HUGE with super lots of meats and a big rib!! It tasted just amazing!! We also had Yasaka special ramen and spicy ramen (spicy level 1, you can choose 0.5 to 3, 1 is a bit spicy). Everything was just great as usually, will definitely come back again!! No ramen no life lol!!

The happy hour draft beer here is excellent—very fresh and enjoyable. The dipping sauce for the noodles is also delicious, though I felt it could be even better if served at a slightly warmer temperature. Overall, a good spot with tasty food and refreshing drinks, with just a bit of room for improvement.

Dive into the heart of authentic Japanese ramen right in Sydney!! Their signature tonkotsu broth is simmered for over 10 hours to unlock deep and rich flavours paired with house made noodles crafted daily for that perfect bite. 🍜🍥 Yasaka delivers their viral BIGGEST RAMEN in Sydney, their King Mashi Mashi Ramen - it is loaded with ton of toppings including grilled pork rib, slow-cooked braised pork belly, chashu, egg and veggies!! 🤤🤩 Perfect for a quick lunch or dinner, Yasaka Ramen is a favourite among ramen lovers. You’ve got a comfort bowl waiting for you! ☺️

I had a fantastic meal at Yasaka Ramen in the city! Their ramen was absolutely delicious — the broth was rich but not heavy, and the flavors were perfectly balanced. The noodles were spot-on, and the generous amount of tender, flavorful meat really made it stand out. It’s hard to find ramen that’s this satisfying without feeling too greasy. Highly recommend Yasaka if you’re craving a hearty, quality bowl of ramen!

If you're looking for authentic Japanese ramen then Yasaka Ramen is the place for you! With friendly staff that greets you and the aroma of the ramen broth filling the room with warmth it reminds you of Japan! My friends and I shared the massive Mashi Mashi King Ramen and every slurp was a delight! With grilled pork rib, kakuni, chasu, eggs, spring onions, bamboo shoots, seaweed, cabbage and bean sprout you also get extra noodle refills!!! The pork was so tender with a taste of charcoal it's one of the best cooked pork meat in a ramen in Sydney! A must try! We also couldn't resist their happy hour deal where you can get a ramen, karaage side and drink for $21, tasty bargain! Two locations in Sydney (CBD ans Rhodes), it's a must visit 🥰
Meeks R — Google review
I’ve come here probably about 10 times over the last 5 years, as I live in the city but it’s gradually gotten worse and worse. Tonight I got the signature tonkotsu with extra chashu but it was so disappointing. The egg was smashed to bits, and the soup was over salted and the miso paste wasn’t stirred in the bottom. I used to love it here, but I think the kitchen staff just don’t care anymore. Won’t be back.
Pearce ( — Google review
The soup base of the ramen here is particularly rich and the portion is very generous. We often visit here. Their fried pork cutlets are also very delicious. And it's very cost-effective.
Xuan C — Google review
This is that ramen shop you always walk past but somehow never step into — until one day you do, and wonder why you waited so long. Since the Waterloo store closed, it’s been way too long since I had the Mashi Mashi King. Came back to the CBD shop and yep, the line was real. I kind of underestimated it — the portion is huge in an overwhelming kind of way (in a good sense). Three kinds of pork, all the toppings, rich broth, chewy noodles — classic Yasaka. Add on fried lotus chips, karaage, octopus, tofu… everything hit the spot. Still that nostalgic tonkotsu shoyu base I remember. “No ramen no life” might just be the truest slogan I’ve seen.

The menu includes small plates, Fukuoka-style skewers, and charcoal-grilled dishes like Horumon Yaki. On weekends, guests can enjoy a seven-course tasting menu.
been craving izakaya for a while and finally found this gem on Instagram. The food and wine were amazing! The total for everything in the picture was $84.90, but with the card surcharge, I ended up paying $90.48. Overall, it was a great experience!

The food was ok and the drinks were nice. The issue is that they don’t take your order, they make you mark it with a pencil on a sheet. They got the 2 first dishes wrong, giving us both times more expensive dishes than what we ordered. With the first dish they tried to convince us to take it instead and we refused. When they got wrong the second dish they told us to keep it and pay for the cheaper dish that we did order. After that we waited 25 for the next dish while the table next to that arrived half an hour after us already received all of their dishes. It seemed like it was on purpose not send us our dishes. We asked to cancel the dishes that didn’t arrive (1.5 after we sat down) and paid for what we had. Worst experience I had in a long time. We were the only white people there so maybe if you go you need at least one Asian friend for them to want to serve you…
Amy H — Google review
We walked in without a booking and were able to be seated at one of the counters (it was early, just after 6). We were introduced to the menu, which had a few sections, and we took our time going through it all, ordering from most sections. The food came out very quickly but not all at once so we were able to enjoy most of the previous dish before the next came. The sashimi platter was fresh and the grilled squid was quite good though could use a bit more charring. The star was the crab chawanmushi, very strong on the crab flavour. Our yakitori platter came last. Aside from the chicken thigh being slightly dry, the pork belly and the chicken crackling were both juicy and super flavourful (thanks to the sauce I think). We had a glass of sake each, which were larger than we anticipated so they did the trick. We finished dinner in just over an hour and were quite satisfied with the food and how full we felt.
Edgar L — Google review
Authentic Japanese-style Yakitori experience with a traditional setup — we sat at the bar area, which gave us a front-row view of the chefs expertly grilling skewers over open charcoal flames. The smoky aroma filled the air, creating a warm, inviting, and immersive dining experience. The kitchen team worked with precision and intensity, and it was fascinating to watch the cooking process up close. The atmosphere was bustling and energetic, with a constant flow of customers and a lively buzz of conversation. The space is compact and cozy, with a casual izakaya-style vibe — dim lighting, wooden counters, and an open kitchen that adds to the charm. It feels like a slice of Tokyo tucked into the city, ideal for those who enjoy a vibrant, authentic dining scene. We opted for the banquet menu, which offered a mix of sashimi and Yakitori. The variety was good, and everything was presented neatly, though the overall flavor was fairly average and didn’t quite stand out compared to similar spots we’ve tried. One downside was the parking situation — it’s quite difficult to find a spot nearby, especially during busy hours, so it’s best to plan ahead or consider alternative transport.

Very authentic japanese skewers shop. Our faves are the chawanmushi, miso cod and chicken meatball skewers. The garlic fried rice with added wagyu is a must too. But honestly we’ve tried most of the menu and they have all been delicious. Highly recommend!
Ashley — Google review
I'm obsessed with the spanner crab chawanmushi. Have to have a whole one to myself. Other note worthy dishes included Saba sashimi (mackerel), octopus karaage, softbone meatball onsen egg, and truffle uni wagyu. For dessert, so try the Matcha Tiramsu if you like matcha. Service is polite and efficient. Cocktails are also very good. I recommend the Yuzu margarita and the Old fashion.

Umami Dojo is a cozy ramen spot in Pyrmont, offering a unique dining experience. The chef, Keji Mizuno, uses an unconventional method of brewing ramen stock with coffee siphons, resulting in a rich and delicate flavor profile. Despite its unassuming location, the restaurant's interior exudes traditional charm reminiscent of Tokyo's backstreets.
Best ramen I have had in a long time. Love their sardine broth in particular and their noodles are so delicious & perfectly done everytime. Chicken chashu here is the best! Entrees and dessert are very good too! Love coming back here.
E W — Google review
Indulged ramen experience on a hidden spot on Harris St with tons of flavour in the bowl. Arrived after 7pm on a weekday and waited for seat for around 30mins. There is a notice on the door to inform customers there will be a longer wait due to how they make and serve the ramen, and I can see there is only two staff working - chef and the waitress. We took a seat after and ordered kaki fry (deep fried oyster with crumbed), pork gyoza, Katsuo ramen and the winter special Kani (crab) miso. We had our entrees served quite quickly the ramen is another around 20mins. But I would say all our wait on the night worths it. The kaki fry is beautifully cooked with the crunchy coating and sweet, creamy oyster within. The gyoza is one of the best ones I had in Sydney - the shape is beautiful and the filling inside is nice and juicy. But even if you are quite hungry bu then, be careful when it’s just served, don’t risk putting the whole gyoza in your mouth since it’s quite hot inside :) The seasonal special kani miso is charging a rather premium price point in Sydney’s ramen market and honestly I was hesitated at first but I am not regretting at all. The broth is full of flavour from the ocean with all the umami from the ocean (kelp, fish and crab). The flavour has many different layers and profound complexity. The fried soft shell crab doesn’t taste like frozen product and the crab meat gives another shot of strong and unique kani punch. The Katsuo ramen is on the other end with a clear broth. With a lighter bodied broth, it’s silky smooth in your mouth and the flavour and tastes will unleash on your palate. It finishes with a subtle and elegant smokiness probably because of the syphoned dried bonito chips. Niboshi ramen also has a light body but is rich in flavour. It starts from fragrance of dried fish (in this case would be dried sardine), and ends with natural well rounded sweetness of white radish. Seasonal special miso ramen unveils another side of niboshi ramen broth. The savouriness brought by fermentation beautifully merged with dashi - a stronger punch of umami in this dojo. Recommended if you prefer a miso seasoned bowl of ramen. Special shoutout to their menma - it’s not typical ramen bamboo shoot that is usually tender and marinated or infused in soy sauce. The menma is fresh and crunchy and the flavour of shoyu is light and just right to go with their broth. This restaurant is a place for ramen and food lovers. All good foods need to be waited and the owner already told all his clients with multiple notice on the door and the menu. I do hope there will be more flexibility on the business hours, but I fully understand and respect the ramen and side dish they present to us. ご馳走様でした!
Z Z — Google review
A good ramen bowl is simple - you just need to get three things right: the broth, the noodles, and the chashu. Umami Dojo really nails it and gives a near-perfect example of what ramen should be. We started with the kaki fry (oyster fry), which came out fresh and clean-tasting, and the wagyu gyoza, which were some of the best gyoza I’ve ever had - thin, crispy skin and packed with flavour. For the ramen, we tried both the sardine soup and the bonito soup. Both were solid, but we preferred the sardine broth for its depth. Either way, the bowls were beautifully balanced: the broth rich and layered, the noodles just right, and the chashu smoky, tender, and full of flavour. Will not hesitate to visit again. (We made a reservation via text, but it turned out to be pretty quiet on a Monday night.)
Morosoph — Google review
We ordered the bonito ramen, crab ramen, pork gyoza and ponzu karage. Everything was cooked well and delicious. The gyoza wrap was thin and light with a tasty dipping sauce. The highlight was definitely the bonito ramen, light flavour broth with a smoky flavour. The noodles were bouncy and had a great texture. Wish I ordered extra noodles. We came early so got a table without booking but others who came later all seemed to have a booking. Would recommend and definitely will come back.

Place is cozy. Good light setting and rather quiet. Authentic Japanese ramen. I got the limited Carb Miso ramen. Broth is really good, rich and full of flavour. Reasonable choices of sake, got options for hot and cold. Staff is gentle and friendly. Highly recommend to have a try!

Overall a nice, cosy and slow atmosphere to enjoy ramen in. Broth was of high quality and so were the ingredients. Additionally, we felt like we were not rushed which was good. However, unfortunately the lady server was not kind to other Asians (was quite rude) which resulted in I giving a lower score. Additionally portions were on the smaller side for that price. However, Umami definitely falls in the nicer part of ramen restaurants in Sydney.

Great food, atmosphere and service. Jazz music started playing from 6pm and it was lovely having that in the background. Food was delicious - I don't think I have a dish that I didn't like. The entrees came out very quick but the mains took a while to come and 1 food item got forgotten which we end up canceling. The seats did not have any backing in the middle table so unfortunately my partner ha ing existing back problems found them really uncomfortable to sit on for long periods of time. Otherwise everything else was superb and waitress gave us good suggestions. Would definitely come back! I would get here earlier to find free street parking on the weekends - we ended up going to paid parking as we didn't spare ourselves much time

Surry Hills truly is a haven for food lovers, and we had the pleasure of discovering a remarkable Japanese gem. The flavors were nothing short of exquisite, with each dish masterfully crafted. Butter Surry Hills is a unique spot that has made a significant impact on the ramen scene, attracting noodle enthusiasts with a penchant for hip-hop culture. Chef-Owner Julian Cincotta occasionally features his renowned fried chicken ramen on the menu, drawing in devoted fans from across Sydney. While the ramen selection may not be extensive, Butter often introduces new monthly specials to keep things exciting.
Delicious fried chicken and other fried accompaniments. Chicken is tender, moist and flavourful with a crispy batter. Fries are similarly soft and moist inside, crunchy outside - some of the nicest thin cut fries I’ve had. Fried chicken doughnut comes with a healthy dose of real maple syrup. Highly recommended - Butter may very well take the crown of best fried chicken in the area until Joy KFC reopens.

This restaurant is perfect if you have a craving for fried chicken. The atmosphere is fun, the tunes even if overly loud are a mixture of old and new hip hop but you expect this before you go. We had the chicken wings, which are large so I would suggest just getting 2 unless you plan on sharing. We also had the Cheezus Burger which was tasty even if there isn’t much in it, but it doesn’t need it. Both come with fries, and damn good ones at that. They did stuff up our order and as an apology they gave us a donut which was very nice of them. The donut was fabulous and well worth getting. I think they are reasonably priced and serving are quite large.
Casandra T — Google review
Ordered the Cheezus The chicken was cooked well but way too salty! The burger only had 1 thin piece of lettuce, could barely taste it. Serving size was good.
Jer Y — Google review
Been meaning to make a visit for a long time and it didn't disappoint. We had the lunch box, two lots of the chicken tenders and chips and a side of Poutine - more than enough food for three people. The wings in the lunch box were massive and the tenders were also big, the coating on both was nice and just the perfect level of crispy. The standout was the Poutine, the ramen gravy took it to the next level.

We were super excited to try butter recently! We ordered a few different things off the menu and everything was really really good! Little place with a really cool vibe, only thing I could pick on was the music was a little too loud and we couldn’t really talk but that’s if I’m being really picky. What an amazing experience. Upon entry, we were greeted by a happy and excited young French man who was all too keen to assist and make sure we were taken care of. I scanned the QR code to order and he said don’t worry about that. I’m here to look after you. He sure did. Kept checking in to see if all is ok, if we wanted extra sauce etc. legend. The fried chicken and donut hit every emotion and taste bud. The donut was a warm pillow, soft, sweet, and delicious, with crispy, yet juicy fried chicken atop. Complemented with a drizzle of maple. This was a match made in heaven. What a combo. 10/10. Chicken tenders were well portioned and equally crispy, flavourful and juicy. 10/10. Last but not least was the OG burger and fries. Again, well portioned, crispy, juicy well seasoned chicken thigh. Buns weren’t too big or thick and the cheese with the sauce was on point. Fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned. 10/10. We loved everything about butter Sydney and can’t wait to come back for more. Nice atmosphere and music. Thank you for a 10/10 experience.

This charming eatery offers an impressive selection of ramen at wallet-friendly prices, making it a popular spot among students and locals alike.
Great little Japanese Restaurant located in Glebe Point Road. I had the Karage Don on rice, which was great. A bit sweeter than usual, but great all the same. Chicken was good quality, but the rice was (just) slightly overcooked. My GF had the Karami Ramen with the Miso base, which was very spicy (they did warn us) but she loved it. Price was decent/fair for the quality. I'd definitely go back. Highly recommend it.

3.5/5 Good variety and you’re able to choose the soup for most ramens. The tonkotsu soup was pretty rich and tasty. The chashu and bamboo shoot toppings were really good. The noodle has a bit of an alkaline after taste which I was not a fan of. Reasonably priced and has a good chill casual vibe.

A charming Ramen place in Glebe! This cute Japanese spot in Glebe has a lovely vibe and a big selection of ramen. It was nice to be able to customize our bowl with different broths and noodle thicknesses. The Sapporo miso ramen was my favourite — it had a great depth of flavor and broth thickness. The All-Star ramen was also nice as it was packed with veggies. However, the meat portions were a bit small in all bowls. I would also not recommend the tonkotsu broth as it was more watery and light than our liking. Overall, it's a decent ramen place, especially if you go for one of their rich miso broths!

Absolutely delicious ramen and great atmosphere. We tried the tonkotsu & bonito ramen and a spicier one, both rich in flavour. The noodles were thin, firm, and just perfect. Details on the table like soy-vinegar sauce and freshly grounded sesame makes it even better. The place itself is beautifully set up and in a great location. We came around 3pm, so it was quiet, no wait, and the service was incredibly friendly and fast. Overall, an amazing experience.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely Phenomenal! Ippudo Circular Quay delivered one of the best dining experiences we've ever had. Our party of four was completely blown away. We started with 3 incredible cocktails (seriously, these are crafted to perfection) and some wine that paired beautifully with our dishes. The entrees were out of this world – the cucumber dish, in particular, was so fresh and flavourful I could have happily eaten it all day long. And then came the ramens... wow. Each bowl was a masterpiece! I ordered the Bonito Special, and it was hands down the best ramen I've ever had. My only regret? Not having a second stomach to eat every last bite! The rich, umami-packed broth and perfectly cooked noodles had us all in awe. Amazing food, vibrant atmosphere, and top-notch service – Ippudo Circular Quay is an absolute must-visit for anyone who loves exceptional Japanese cuisine. Can’t wait to come back!

A truly top-tier Japanese experience in Sydney. Expensive, yes—but absolutely worth it for the highest quality Japanese food we've had in Sydney. The service was excellent, the atmosphere cosy and inviting, and the food was simply outstanding. Highly recommend the Brussels sprouts—they were a surprising standout! We had a wonderful time and will definitely be back.

Japanese French Fusion style and delicious .. whatever we ordered were so good! So happy with our choices .. We picked the never heard menu .. and turned up to be so great Also the dessert, the dragon egg as well as the pear pie were also our fave Plan to go back there in the next few days, before i leave to fly back home to Indonesia The ambiance of the restaurant was a bit too dark for me ... but actually once we sat down on our table, the lighting was good for reading the menu seeing the food as well as to take the food's pictures .. well done on the interior lighting

Saké Restaurant & Bar delivered an outstanding dining experience from start to finish. The atmosphere was intimate and romantic—perfect for a special night out. The sashimi was incredibly fresh and beautifully presented, setting a high bar for the rest of the meal. For mains, we had the beef tenderloin and lobster—both were cooked to perfection, rich, buttery, and packed with flavour. Service was truly impeccable—friendly, attentive, and professional without being intrusive. Every staff member made us feel well taken care of. Highly recommend for anyone looking for elevated Japanese dining in a stunning setting. Would absolutely return.

We visited this restaurant after seeing all the great reviews. The food was very good. If you like raw seafood and the like you would love what’s on the menu. We ordered the chefs tasting menu for a birthday and it was tasty! We were not a huge fan of the lemon meringue shard dessert but everything else was a hit. My personal favourite was the miso toothfish! Our Wagyu strip loin dish was a bit inconsistent, one was more chewy in texture than the other. Service was okay but nothing that stands out, it fell a bit short considering this is considered a fine dining restaurant. Staff seemed to be very busy today. Atmosphere was okay. We sat at the table with the view of the kitchen. It is very busy here with lots of people walking past and orders being called. The ambience could have been better. Overall not a bad experience! Would recommend trying at least once!

Love the food and the atmosphere here — such a nice spot to celebrate. Most of the dishes were so good and full of flavour. However, the regular sushi rolls and karaage chicken weren’t really to my taste, but everything else was excellent!

This year for my birthday, my boyfriend surprised me with a visit to Saké Restaurant — and wow, it definitely didn’t disappoint! From the beautiful ambience to the attentive service, everything felt like a trip back to Japan, but with a modern twist that gives Saké its own unique charm. The kingfish and oysters were definite highlights for my boyfriend and he couldn’t stop raving about their freshness and quality. For me, nothing beats the kingfish sushi. I honestly couldn’t get enough! And for dessert, I went with the Dragon Egg. Beautifully presented, rich, creamy, and bursting with flavour, it’s the kind of dessert you can only experience at Saké. I’d go back just for that alone! To top it all off, the team surprised me with a little birthday cake and candle, without me even asking. It’s such a thoughtful touch that made the night even more special. We were served by Martina, who was absolutely lovely. Her service was exceptional from start to finish. A truly memorable dining experience — perfect for special occasions or simply treating yourself to something amazing.
Julienne — Google review
Amazing experience! Highly recommend sashimi (melts in your mouth), oysters, popcorn prawns and the house salad made our night! Everything was incredibly fresh and high quality. Honestly reckon it’s better than Nobu! Rated 4 stars for food as the sushi roll was a let down.
Sharon C — Google review
It’s been a long time since I last visited the old Four Seasons restaurant, and I was surprised to find out that The Rock Sake has moved to a new location, luckily just across the street. The new venue has a completely different vibe — much more modern, with only a small touch of Japanese elements left. It seems like the ownership has changed, and the menu is now very different, catering more to Western tastes. The direction is clearly high-end dining with premium pricing. The food overall was decent but not particularly memorable. The sashimi was fresh, the lobster dish was well prepared, and the steak was cooked properly. However, the fried shrimp dish felt completely disconnected from Japanese cuisine. Service from the staff was excellent — attentive and professional. The restaurant was clean and stylish, but the tables were quite close to each other, which made privacy feel a bit lacking. In short, it’s not that the place is bad, but there wasn’t anything that stood out enough for me to want to return unless I have a specific reason.

Went there for lunch, menu was very limited (only 2 types of sushi). Only the smallest sushi roll at splurge prices with very ordinary qylualiy and taste, it did not even serve the eye and I was very disappointed when it landed on our table. Overall experience was very disappointing with a big bill. Had to spend $130 for one appetizer, 2 beers and two small rolls. Will never go back.

Truly magical Japanese food experience. Staff were brilliant and exceptionally accommodating. Atmosphere in the restaurant was intimate, cozy and quiet. It's a large restaurant but the acoustics around us to have quiet conversations without being disturbed. The food and wine was sensational. Every dish is a masterpiece, packed with flavour and beautifully presented. From the melt-in-your-mouth sashimi to the perfectly grilled wagyu, and the creative dishes—each bite is a celebration of Japanese fusion done right. The balance of textures and flavours shows true culinary artistry. Special shoutout to Quynh , who always goes above and beyond to make our dining experience unforgettable. Her warmth, and genuine care truly set Sokyo apart. It’s our go-to place and easily the best dining spot in Sydney. Highly recommend!

the food was outstanding, especially the cuttlefish and sweet potato tempura, plus the lamb was cooked to perfection. Salmon and sushi were yum too. The service was just just great with staff who were friendly and helpfull. A bit on the pricey side but worth going back to

I called in at Sokyo for dinner with my partner and her mother (who have been several times and swear by the place!). The team are welcoming and attentive, with a superb wine menu and a wonderful variety of options. Everything we ordered was utterly delicious (the tempura prawns were better than many I’ve had in many high-end places in Japan), and I’ll happily be returning again!
Simon L — Google review
My oh my… it’s been almost a week and I’m still craving their crispy rice sushi. Absolutely amazing food. The wagyu was tender and melted in your mouth with each piece. The sushi’s were fresh and tasty. The crispy rice sushi… wow. The vibe was beautiful, the service was decent and overall it is a wonderful experience. Sure, it’s super expensive - but tbh I do see why. Loved it!
S — Google review
Some aspects of the meal were excellent, but overall, the food quality was inconsistent. A few dishes were beautifully prepared, while others fell short—mostly due to overpowering sauces. Here’s a more detailed breakdown: • Tempura shrimp was fried to perfection, light and crisp, but the accompanying spicy mayo tasted more like a heavy paprika sauce and dominated the delicate shrimp. • Green salad was fresh and generously portioned, but drenched in a sesame-soy dressing that overwhelmed the flavors. • Soft shell roll was very good and well balanced. • Toothfish 51 (Chilean sea bass) was cooked perfectly—tender and flaky—but unfortunately buried under a sauce that was far too sweet for our taste. • The biggest letdown was the Kobe steak. It was extremely chewy and difficult to eat. I pointed this out to the server, even gesturing to the uneaten pieces left on the plate, but received no response or offer to address it. On a positive note, the service was quick and generally pleasant. However, the lack of acknowledgment when feedback was given was disappointing. If you visit, I’d recommend steering clear of the meat dishes. As for pricing, I’m not entirely sure how it stacks up, as I haven’t quite wrapped my head around the exchange rate yet. Hope this helps!

When it comes to Japanese dining in Sydney, Ramen IPPUDO Westfield Sydney is a must-visit destination that brings the authentic flavors of Hakata, Japan's ramen capital, right to your plate. This beloved eatery has captured the hearts of locals with its signature dishes like the Shiromaru Tamago Ramen and Karaka Men. But if noodles aren't your thing, fear not!

Walked in on a Thurs evening @ 1830hrs without reservation. Service was prompt, friendly & fast. Chicken Kariage - chunky, juicy and tender. Tastes good too. 8/10 Ramen - the additional sides perks up the main dish. Soup is good, tasty and noodle texture (hard) in delicious. It'd be nice if the soup portion is a little more. 8/10. Will definitely revisit.

Thu-09-Oct, 6pm Mid-week dinner catch-up with friends. Our go-to Ramen place and love the ramen here. This time I tried the Kaisen Don rice dish and now have a new fav. Mix well and enjoy the pops of delectable flavours.

Very good experience while dining in. Tried their Tori Shoyu Ramen and Akamaru Ramen and Takoyaki which was flavourful along with soft serve ice cream was satisfying. I ordered a take away Shiromaru Ramen, packaged very thoughtfully (broth, ingredients and noodle were in seperate containers). Broth was very salty, couldn’t continue after few tries. If only they fix the broth, they could rate more higher.

Enjoyable experience the Ramen dishes here always great to warm you up in winter. The Sushi was nice but the Fish roe is strong so I could understand not for everyone. Great option for lunch in the city!

I had a great lunch at Ippudo! The ramen was absolutely delicious – I ordered the Special Karaka-Men and the broth was rich, creamy, and perfectly spicy. The pork chashu was tender and flavorful, and the seasoned egg was cooked perfectly. The spicy miso and garlic oil added such a satisfying depth to the soup. We also had the salmon sushi rolls (lightly torched and topped with tobiko and cucumber) – they looked amazing and tasted even better. The gyoza was crisp and juicy, served with a dab of wasabi that added a great punch. Service was friendly and fast, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. A great place for a satisfying lunch – I’ll definitely be coming back!

Tucked inside the busy Westfield food court, Ippudo Ramen stands out as one of the few places offering something more substantial than standard fast food. Known worldwide for its signature ramen, the Sydney branch delivers on its reputation, bringing a comforting bowl of noodles to shoppers and city workers alike. The ramen itself is satisfying and flavorful, with a rich broth and well-prepared noodles that hit the spot after a day in the city. While the seasoning can lean a little salty, it’s still an enjoyable bowl—comforting, hearty, and a cut above the usual mall fare. What makes Ippudo particularly appealing here is its role as the best available sit-down option in a space otherwise dominated by quick-service chains. If you’re in the Westfield food court and craving something warm, filling, and closer to restaurant quality, Ippudo is the go-to choice.

I lunched here with a friend and I opted for the Set Meal where I got an appetiser of Takoyaki and the Akamaru Shinaji Ramen. The Takoyaki was excellent and the Ramen was very good. The noodles came out firm as ordered. A very good meal. Typically reliable as I have come to expect from Ippudo anywhere in Sydney. Highly recommended! 💯

Pho Pasteur is a long-standing Vietnamese restaurant located near the bustling Westfield Shopping Centre in Parramatta. Since its establishment in 1992, this family-run eatery has been serving up classic Vietnamese dishes, with their specialty being the flavorful bowls of pho. In addition to their renowned pho, the extensive menu features an array of options including vermicelli noodle salads and rice-paper rolls, with notable vegetarian selections available as well.
Reasonably priced for good food. We ordered pho and the spring rolls. They were generous with the bean sprouts and the meats in the pho. The service was friendly and fast. There’s plenty of seats so there was no wait.

This restaurant has been on my list for a long time, and it definitely didn’t disappoint! I had the rare beef pho with a side of bean sprouts, onions, and chili. The pho was super flavorful and comforting, with tender slices of medium-rare beef and a rich, aromatic broth. Totally worth trying!

Good place for Vietnamese cuisine. We got the pho dat hurt, pho ga and crispy chicken with tomato rice. They were all so tasty and they gave us so much meat with the pho. The the tomato rice was a bit on the bland side but was quickly made up by pouring the fish sauce over it. They have complimentary tea and you can ask for water. Heaps of seats inside and the food comes out quickly. Will definitely be back to try out the rest of the menu.

Great food. Ordered fried chicken with tomato rice and seafood laksa. Did not disappoint and will come back here again. We also ordered the iced coffee with condensed milk. This could have tasted better as it tasted a little watered down but it was fine.
Chechi R — Google review
I’m writing this to say I won’t be coming back. Every time I visited, the staff were consistently rude — the only reason I returned was because I occasionally craved salty food. But yesterday was the last straw: the service was extremely poor, and the food was so salty I’ve been drinking water non-stop. What’s worse, when we entered the restaurant, one of the staff simply pointed at the seats and said “sit,” which felt abrupt and rude. Later, when I ordered, the same staff member even spoke to me in a language other than English. I also had to repeat myself four times because they couldn’t understand basic English, which made the whole interaction even more frustrating. These staff members seem to have been working here for over a year — I’ve been visiting on and off during that time — which makes the whole situation even more ridiculous. I understand that not everyone speaks perfect English, especially in a multicultural country like Australia, but there’s a big difference between struggling with the language and not even trying to improve it. The staff seriously need to improve their customer service and learn how to communicate properly with customers. I used to feel excited before coming here, thinking about the salty food I was craving — but every time, I ended up feeling disappointed because of the poor service. I’m done with this place — it’s just not worth the stress or how bad it makes me feel, both mentally and physically. I won’t be coming back.
Yejin H — Google review
Too bad. What a shame to Vietnamese fantastic cuisine. I used to have lunch here a few times before. But now when I come back, the food is disgusting. We ordered 3 different dishes, and they were all trash. The broth was too salty. Pork was black charred. Chicken was a little bit better, crispy but way too blanch. Worst, the peanut in the "bun thit nuong" dish was very old and oily. Cannot eat that. By the way, I am a Vietnamese. Cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone.

📍 Shinmachi Newtown 1/239 King St, Newtown NSW 2042 After a long chilly day out ❄️🧣, we randomly searched on Google and ended up at this little Japanese gem 🇯🇵✨ — tucked away upstairs, super cozy, and full of warm vibes. The staff were so friendly and welcoming 🙏, service was great, and the food definitely had that authentic touch 🍱🍵. My highlight? Definitely the agedashi tofu — crispy outside, silky inside, just perfect 🤤✨. The curry don though… a bit on the mild side for me 🍛😅, could use a stronger curry kick. The kids loved it too 👧🧒💖 — especially enjoying the comfy booth seats while we tucked into dinner. All in all, a lovely surprise find that warmed us up after the cold day. 🌸🍲

Shinmachi in Newtown is an absolute gem. The food here is nothing short of awesome — every dish feels fresh, full of flavour, and made with real care. Was awful japanese restaurant experience ever. The sashimi Omakase set which was $38, absolutely disappointed. How thin they are, please refer to the photos I have attached. I have never seen this kind of sashimi in Sydney. Also, the scallop Sashimi was not fresh at all, and it looked like 3pcs were forced by cutting one scallop into three pieces. To make matters worse, there was a big cockroach on the dining area which was definitely disgusting. Won't be back unfortunately.
Grace B — Google review
The restaurant has many things speaking for it like the design, service and parts of the meals but it fails when it comes to the detail. The special king crab ramen had a great broth, tasty crab meat but far too many onions and spring onions. I also expect a calm atmosphere in a Japanese restaurant but the noise level was completely unacceptable and we switched to a different table.

A very long due review. My Mum and I have been dining at this restaurant for a few years now. Over the years I have also gotten takeaway during my lunch break or for a last minute dinner after work. The staff are very lovely and accommodating. I am very grateful for their hospitality and ability to make such delicious meals when I have had an extremely busy week at work. Located at South Village Shopping Centre, 580 Princes Highway, Kirrawee, New South Wales, Australia 🇦🇺 I am not a big Japanese 🇯🇵 eater but I wanted something different so myself and my friend decided to come here for dinner tonight. The restaurant is very tastefully decorated making it very welcoming. We had the pork gyoza 🥟, tempura prawns to share and I had the spicy chicken stir fry as main. It was lovely but I think I am just used to other types of Asian style food ie Thai. Saying that, the food was presented beautifully and tasted delicious. The server was very friendly and welcoming, willing to help us in any way. There’s ample parking 🅿️ underneath the shopping centre and it’s a short walk from Kirrawee railway station 🚉. There’s toilets very close to the restaurant. I was disappointed to learn that the restaurant doesn’t allow split billing. This is frustrating when you are there with friends as I was and we are attempting to pay for our own meals. This shouldn’t be hard to allow, especially if the restaurant is not busy as it was when we attended. This lost a star ⭐️ from me. Otherwise, it was a pleasant experience. Thumbs up!! 👍👍

The dishes we had were generous and full of flavor. The time in which they were served was quite acceptable. The plating was a little haphazard on the beef dish. Our server was friendly and had no problem explaining some of the dishes. We sat a row back from the front tables and found it quite relaxing. It was a quiet time though. Overall good value and glad we dropped in for lunch.

I ordered a chicken katsu bowl through a delivery app. I received this and as soon as i bit into the chicken it felt slimey, i then noticed that the chicken was completely pink and undercooked in the middle! I called the restaurant to inform them of this and the only thing they could say was they would call me back to discuss further. This was yesterday and i have not received a call back since. Very disappointed in this as undercooked, raw chicken can make anyone significantly sick! Please be careful and make sure you check your chicken if you choose to eat here.

Love the food here. So delicious and so many good choices on the menu. My only negative feedback would be the service. Took a while for the waitress to take our order (multitasking between taking orders, bill payments and bringing dishes/drinks to tables). If they hired another waitress, it would make a big difference in a positive way. Still happy to come back for more in the meantime!

Bon Japanese Restaurant offers an intimate dining experience with authentic Japanese cuisine. The restaurant is known for its Red Sea Urchin sourced from Tasmania, which has a distinct sea water taste and generous portions. The food has a homemade feel as it is prepared by the owners themselves. Although the service may be slow due to limited staff, the dishes are fresh and delicious.
Came today for lunch. Knowing they have Red Sea Urchin on offer, I just had to order them. Sourced from Tasmania, Sea Urchin is rare to come by and Bon gets them in daily from their suppliers. They taste distinctly different from your usual white sea urchin with a stronger sea water taste, if you have had BC/Hokkaido Sea Urchin before, you know what I’m talking about. I was surprised by how fresh they were, and how generous the portions presented. We also ordered both Soy/Salt Ramen, which are limited to 10 bowls a day and must say it is my top 3 in Sydney. Hand rolled BBQ Pork that melts in your mouth, sweet half boiled egg, and a homemade broth from scratch is clearly the winner comparing to a lot of places using pre-made mix packs. This has transformed my impression of Bon comparing to my previous visits, keep it up Takumi and Miki!

The food has a very authentic home cooked feel to it. My understanding is that it's literally a mom and pop in the kitchen cooking everything... When you place your order, all of your food comes out at once . So tables seem to be served on a first come first served basis. I would have given it 5 stars but at the time there was only one unfortunate waitress who was serving the entire place, so service was a bit slow.. she tried her best.

Delicious food and friendly staff. The karaage chicken was crunchy and moist, the gyudon had a great bbq taste and the ramen broth was superb. The service however was slow. Booking is essential to lessen the time on table waiting. Would definitely come back.

Our family came here on a cold night hoping to warm up with some ramen and udon noodles - we weren't disappointed! The tonatsu ramen was exceptionally tasty with superb depth of flavour. The Wagyu beef udon noodles was darker and thicker than other udon we have had but was bursting with flavour. The ceviche salad was fresh and zesty. We will definitely be back!

We had pork gyoza for entrée(house made) which were good. I had the miso tonkotsu ramen. Generous with the toppings chasiu was generous right thickness thender and flavors are spot on, noodles are thin and chewy(just the way i like it), the egg was perfect runny and gooey yolk, and for the main component of the bowl the broth was not thick but a full flavor and packed with umami, very nice velvety mouth feel and you can really experience the sticky feel on your lips because of the collagen in the broth (just a simple amazing bowl). My wife had the shoyu chicken broth(its their specials). Same toppings the noodles are medium bit curly chewy, and the broth is also packed with full chicken flavor (in a good way) and so light also a good bowl. I was worried the bowl won't be enough for me as i always order extra noodles with my ramen and i was wrong it was more than enough for me a generous serving. And end the meal with their home made matcha cheese cake also so good. Meals are a bit on the expensive side but its worth it. Yes service was not great as it was only the couple working on the shop(understandably). piece of advice that's why come in early as possible and book as early as possible.

Extremely poor customer service. Ramen, Bento and Gyoza were beyond mediocre; even my pot of tea was bland because there wasn’t enough tea inside. 3 adults and an 8 month old baby, ordered 3 meals and 1 pot of tea - was told off and forced to purchase another meal (ordered gyoza in the end) as baby was counted as a customer as he had occupied a seat and therefore had to purchase a meal, bear in mind he was in a high chair off to the side where a customer would not sit. I was also humiliated for bringing in and feeding my baby “outside food” (a heinz food pouch, baby rusks and a sippy of water). No jokes I was made to feel as though I had ordered 1 ramen to share between 10 people by a furious server. Not family friendly at all! I have been to many better restaurants with my baby and have never been treated like this, I probably would be kicked out by that obnoxious server had I decided to breastfeed my baby. We only decided to trek 40 mins to this revolting restaurant after reading the raving review on concrete playground which ended up being extremely disappointing - customer service, ambience and food. Imagine having to flag down the server whenever you needed something it was like a game of hide and seek, imagine receiving the drink you ordered when you’re about to finish your meal. Needless to say I will never be returning even if they were handing out free food. Please spare yourself the disappointment, there are heaps of great ramen places out there worth your time e.g. gumshara, manpuku, ippudo, ryo’s to name a few.

Fantastic intimate dining experience with authentic Japanese food! Came in with a group of 4 on a Saturday night, BYOd some wine and ordered some snacky pieces and 4 mains. Food doesn't come in any particular order or at the same time but that's clearly signposted on the menu. Every dish was fresh and delicious, the ramen being a particular standout. Would definitely come back to try a different broth!
Nick C — Google review
Small and casual restaurant with good quality authentic Japanese food and very basic furnishings and décor. However be warned that there's a limit to the number of ramen dishes per table and they prioritise those who book ahead to pre-order the tonkotsu ramen. We came here on a weekday evening as a small group and made a reservation specifying that we'll be ordering the ramen. We had a number of dishes shared amongst us and enjoyed them all. The tonkotsu ramen had a wonderfully rich broth and perfectly cooked egg with a creamy yolk and tasted like good ramen found in Tokyo. The takoyaki (octopus balls) were great and actually had decent chunks of octopus and not just all dough like you get in some other places. The pork gyoza were tasty and juicy with a nice thin but firm skin. The aubergine with miso paste was very tender and salty and I regret not ordering a bowl of rice for this as it would have been perfect. The sashimi was ok. The Sydney rock oysters were fresh and tasty. The main thing that really could be improved would be the inefficient service. The staff were very polite and friendly but seems they had their hands full the whole night and were in the kitchen most of the time and thus not very attentive. The décor and furnishings could do with an upgrade and the restroom is outside at the very back and wasn't very well signposted. Overall, the food itself is very good for a small restaurant out in the suburbs but the management of the business can be improved.

Restaurant
Kosuke Ramen Honten in North Strathfield is a cozy spot that specializes in serving delicious and hearty ramen and tsukemen meals. The restaurant offers Tokyo-style ramen with house-made noodles and broth, featuring options like tonkotsu (pork-based) or tori (chicken-based) ramen topped with chashu, bamboo shoots, and soy egg.
Been a regular at Kosuke, loved the quality and selection of ramen and Tsukemen. I always go for the large size Tsukemen because I can never get enough of it 😋 Some of the unique Ramens I don't see too much of is their Tori Paitan, Kyoto style, and niboshi ramen, worth giving these a try also.

Yum, delicious Ramen, like I was back in Japan, we arrived not long after they opened and we managed to order and was given a table, we got there just in time, as then there was a line not long after. It was mother's day today, we got 2 entrees to share and a main each, it reminded me being back in Japan, food was so good, food came out fast & service was excellent, definitely the best Ramen I've had in Sydney, so will be back

Always a line so thought it would be good. Really wasn’t. Pork in my Mazesoba was fatty and tasted bad, same with the pork in my wife’s ramen. Staff seem to love rushing people, I get it’s a busy place but still it’s not helpful. One of the staff starting pressing buttons on our screen to hurry my wife up to get to the payment screen, maybe they thought they were helping but we hadn’t checked if our order was correct and had to go back to the start again anyway which just slowed things down more. Also ordered Taiyaki as a side, tasted like bad oil, like they haven’t changed their deep fry in a while. Never going back, so many other places around that are better and cheaper.

10/10 for the tsukemen at this shop! Karage chicken is quite expensive but very tasty juicy and tender. There's 1 particular staff member waitress who seems pretty blunt but the rest seem friendly. Food comes out relatively quickly after ordering on the iPad. Go early like 5pm to avoid dinner queues.

Excellent Tsukemen with thick noodles. The broth is perfect. Highly recommend as extra noodle (kaedama). The chicken Karrage is very good and authentic. The agedashi tofu broth is a bit mild in taste, but I would characterize this as homestyle agedashi tofu with light battering in a bath of broth. Highly recommend visiting one of the locations

Visited at 2pm on a Friday afternoon and there was practically no one in store so we didn’t have to line up! :) IEKEI (Smoked Char Shu) $23 Ooooo this was good - even for someone who doesn’t like ramen. Soup was thick/ rich and not salty (which happens a lot at ramen places) ♻️ Will order again ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rich Tori Paitan $23 The soup was so rich in flavour. You can tell that they boiled chicken bones in it too! Very good for a chicken soup base. Could not even detect MSG. You can select the firmness/bounciness of the ramen ♻️ Mayor of Eastwood would order again, but I (hi) will not- thus 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

REVIEW UPDATE: I’m so disappointed to write this, as this used to be my favourite local ramen spot. They’ve always been popular, with long lines and higher prices—but I felt it was worth it. Unfortunately, my recent experience was nothing short of horrid. As soon as I took my first bite, something was off. The noodles had a strong, unpleasant ammonia smell that completely overpowered the dish. I stopped eating and politely asked to speak to the manager. Instead of showing concern, the manager was defensive and dismissive. They insisted that the smell was normal and “most people like it.” When I asked if I could swap my meal with my husband’s tsukemen—which didn’t have the smell—they refused. I offered to pay the price difference, but they said I’d have to pay extra for the meat, eggs, and condiments in the spoiled broth. They finally offered to swap only the soup and noodles, keeping the same toppings. They also told me the issue was probably because I chose the “fat soup,” and proceeded to give me a lecture on how to read their menu. Feeling uncertain, I agreed to the swap—but the second bowl still had the same offensive smell. Thankfully, my husband (who usually eats anything) offered to trade meals so I wouldn’t go hungry. After returning home, I looked up other reviews and noticed several people had mentioned the same ammonia smell and similar poor experiences with the manager. I rarely leave negative reviews, but the manager’s attitude and the consistency of this problem compelled me to write one. I considered giving them a one-star review, but gave an extra star because the tsukemen is still worth trying and the other staff were quite nice. Sadly, I won’t be returning and will have to find a new go-to ramen place. PREVIOUS REVIEW: Kosuke Ramen in North Strathfield is known for its flavorful and satisfying bowls, often drawing a queue at dinnertime. On our first visit, we opted for takeaway due to the long wait but felt we missed out on the full experience. Determined to dine in, we returned for a Sunday lunch—the restaurant was busy but had a few available seats. The interior is minimalist and authentically Japanese, with a no-frills approach that keeps the focus on the food. Service was polite and friendly, though slightly understaffed, with only one waitstaff handling the floor, leading to a forgotten request. I tried their signature tsukemen ramen, and it was both unique and memorable. The noodles are served separately, with a glossy, springy, and chewy texture, perfect for dipping into the thick, intensely flavored broth that clings to every strand, delivering a deep umami punch. The condiments and toppings were thoughtfully prepared, and the soup contained a generous amount of tender pork belly. A nice touch is that you can ask the staff to dilute your leftover broth at the end, turning it into a drinkable soup to finish the meal. While the prices are slightly higher than other ramen spots and the atmosphere is simple, the quality and uniqueness of the meal make it absolutely worth trying. I’m already craving my next visit!

Cafe
Sun Ming B.B.Q Restaurant is a classic Hong Kong-style eatery that has been serving up traditional Cantonese cuisine since 1993. Known for its mouthwatering BBQ pork and roast duck, the restaurant also offers a variety of delectable dishes such as baked pork chop fried rice, salt and pepper chicken wings, beef stir-fry rice noodle, and combination chow mein.
Roast Chinese bbq restaurant which allows dine in. The interior is kind of mediocre but the food was quite good actually. They offer complimentary soup which didn't look that appetizing but was good and could probably use a little salt. They also offered tea which was whatever. Roast duck and rice is very good and affordable. Overall I recommend, I'll definitely be back.

It has been years since I have eaten at this restaurant and it was a nice meal that was ordered. Our interactions with the staff were pleasant during this visit. Also, the restaurant has menus in English and in Chinese. We decided that we wanted the dinner meal set. As part of their dinner special, they had a $48 meal set for two available. 2 dishes out of 47 choices can be chosen and come with complementary soup of the day, rice, and veges. The portion size was really decent, with a generous amount of rice. Amongst the dishes, I personally enjoyed the fish with bitter melon in black bean sauce. Overall, the meal was very sufficient for 2.

Bad service except for order people, they were nice but not the cashier who acted like we owe her sth. That two choices rice was hard to chew, bbq pork were unable to chew to pieces you had to swallow them and they cut those in big picese. Won't try again

This place is a good place to have lunch, it has good food, nice service, and is quite quiet. I came for lunch and it was very standard, quite similar to other places I've been, it's good for a quick bite and go. The service was great, staff will be walking around quite a bit so you will need to tuck in your chair. They only say as much as they need to and no more. The atmosphere is quite normal, plain tiled floors, plain walls, and a couple decorations hung up. It is quite quiet so coming in a group might be slightly rude. Overall, a good experience, would come again.

I didn't have too much expectations but omg the food was delicious... everything we ordered was like.. perfect you know? And the fish my goodness so soft and juicy and how it just melts in my mouth. Like the presentation of food and the atmosphere of the restaurant was why my expectations were low but that was low of ME. 100% recommend 👌 👏

Old school house HK food. Got all the classic HK cuisines. Come here for afternoon tea menu often. English isn't the best here. So if making any modifications to the order, it can turn out weird. Also the menu is kind of translated literally into English, so some items turn out nothing like what you think it might be. But the food still usually always taste good haha Always happy to try something different when its not what I was expecting!

Sun Ming located outside Westfield’s on church street parramatta. Sun Ming is also located at Hurstville the original and first restaurant to open in Sydney. Sun Ming offers casual Hong Kong style cuisine for brunch, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Dishes to look out for include wonton noodle soup, fried flat beef noodle stir fry, fish congee, shredded pork chow mein and baked pork chop rice to name a few. There’s a lot more to choose from obviously but for another visit maybe. Sun Ming is good local restaurant to eat out anytime of the day, but also look out for their afternoon tea menu after 2:30pm for some great set meals. The menu also offers pre-set banquets for larger groups of people if you can’t decide what to choose, including delicious seafood dishes. I was least impressed with their hk milk tea, the cup was nice and big, however it didn’t taste nice. Prices have gone up quite a bit also, but one thing for sure they haven’t lost any quality or portion ✅

Nestled in the heart of Marrickville, Maki and Ramen is a beloved gem that transports diners straight to Japan. The chefs embark on annual journeys to Kyushu and the Sumida Markets, handpicking top-notch ingredients for their ramen creations. With over 15 varieties available, guests can indulge in broths ranging from light shoyu to deeply flavored tonkotsu, simmered for an impressive 18 hours.
Authentic Japanese ramen! The broth is rich and flavorful, definitely a must try! The takoyaki and Okonomyaki are also very good!
Maria S — Google review
Great service and ambience however I wouldn’t say their Ramen and chicken Karaage are their strengths. Tonkotsu which is usually the richer of the 3 broth options didn’t have as much depth and was weak in flavor. Similar to when you can notice the difference between a pho broth that’s been cooked for overnight vs. one that is lighter in the meat and spices flavour. You’ll find better ramen in the Japanese restaurants in Newtown and Haymarket. I did note this weakness in broth flavour at Maki a few years ago when they were at their last location but thought things might have changed. In addition chicken karaage wasn’t like the authentic ones you can get. Even chains like dopa donburi in the city food court is tastier. The one at Maki wasn’t with chicken thigh which is important to get that surface area and juiciness of karaage. At maki the karaage came as cubes of chicken, likely chicken breast which was tough and dry and the batter wasn’t the same either. I didn’t think to take photos so readers can only take my word. Overall I won’t be looking for Japanese ramen or karaage in Marrickville and will look to Newtown for something local. That said service can’t be faulted, you’re looked after immediately as you sit down.

Stopped in for a last minute dinner, we were one of a few diners when we arrived but the restaurant was packed within about 10minutes! We ordered: 2 x tokyo ramen 1 x black garlic ramen 1 x vegetable curry Everything was amazing and the food arrived in less than 10minutes. Great little Japanese restaurant serving delicious food. We'll be back again!

Really busy and a great atmosphere on a Wednesday night. I had the Katsu curry - generous portion of chicken and the classic Katsu sauce. Delicious and reasonably priced. Was very quick considering that every table was filled.

Note: This is an opinion. When we went there was only one lady on floor and she didn’t greet us which is understandable. My husband had curry and I had spicy ramen, the portion size was unacceptable for the price. The taste for me was ok not amazing. I like the decoration of the restaurant, I felt like I was in another world.

Went for the first time with my family, and specifically for their dedicated vegetarian menu. Not many Japanese restaurants have this option. This place is an institution in Marrickville, considering how long it's been open. Menu is filled with varieties, from maki (should be obvious) and their many ramen options. We ordered non-vegetarian items as well as vegetarian/vegan options (half of our table was vegan). All dishes were delicious, well-cooked and seasoned. Vibe was relaxed and service was fast. Definitely will come back soon.

Besuto - Omakase Sydney offers an exclusive 15-course dining experience with only 8 seats available per session. The restaurant promises to provide the best produce available, featuring dishes like miso-marinated Glacier 51 toothfish and toro with N25 caviar. The menu changes regularly, ensuring a unique culinary journey for each visit. Besuto aims to immerse patrons in traditional and cutting-edge Japanese culture and cuisine, offering an unforgettable dining experience.
Dining at Besuto Sydney was an incredible experience from start to finish. Every detail—from the meticulous presentation to the balance of flavors—was truly impressive. The chef was not only skilled but also warm and engaging, adding a personal touch to the evening. Each dish was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Every bite made me think, “I’m definitely coming back.” It’s rare to find an omakase experience this refined and memorable. The ambience was cozy, intimate, and thoughtfully decorated, with seating for just eight people—making it feel like a private culinary performance. The staff were attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable, contributing to the seamless experience. Without a doubt, Besuto ranks among the best Japanese omakase restaurants I’ve been to. A must-visit for anyone seeking a top-tier dining experience in Sydney.

Exquisite experience, charming staff and very knowledgeable chef that brought the whole experience together. It goes without saying that the food was exceptional. Next time i would be tempted by the sake pairing but tbh we were perfectly satisfied without it! Intimate and perfect for date/celebration. Option to converse with the other diners if you are so inclined but the atmosphere is also perfectly comfortable to enjoy quietly.

My husband and I had an amazing time at Besuto, Omakase. The cocktails were delicious, Kyoto Day Dreams and Stroll in Okinawa are our favourites! The chef prepared each dish with care, so delicious and well presented. Each dish is nicely timed, didn’t feel like we had to wait for the next dish to come out. Our waiter was superb, funny and friendly, he made us feel so welcome. The atmosphere was lively and fun throughout the evening. We enjoyed every moment and looking forward to coming back!

True Rating: 6/5 – Transcendent I feel that there are maybe three restaurants in Sydney that deserve to be judged on a different scale than most. Besuto is one of them. Straight away, you can tell that Chef Michiaki Miyazaki was trained in a three-Michelin starred restaurant in Japan. It is quite simply the best omakase in Australia and easily a contender among the world's finest, without the unnecessary pomp and ceremony that some insist upon. Having tried three very mediocre versions of omakase that I had been told were excellent, I was sceptical about trying another. Until the first bite, then I was blown away. Every single course builds, elevates and surprises in ways I've never experienced elsewhere. Sakizuke: It opens with a pristine oyster, subtly dressed and chilled just right, showcasing peak-season produce. Mukōzuke: A sashimi box follows, as elegant in flavour as in form. Chawanmushi: A luxuriously silky custard laden with the sweetest crab, ikura and truffle; my vote for the best ever served in Sydney. Yakimono: The black miso cod delivers caramelised edges and buttery flesh. I wish I could eat it every day. Sumiyaki: The Wagyu at Besuto has restored my faith in this often mishandled cut. Cooked perfectly and paired with fried asparagus, mushrooms and fresh wasabi. It is a master class in taste and texture. I never thought I'd say this but even after those beautiful dishes, along comes the nigiri. No soy or extra wasabi required, just perfectly seasoned rice at the ideal temperature and immaculate cuts. The salmon and tuna belly were absolute stand outs and a week later, I'm still thinking about them. A duo of hand rolls, brimming with uni, ikura and finely cut tuna, brings richness and pop, followed by a palate-cleansing hit of yuzu sorbet. Adding to Besuto's magic is Joel, the host and co owner is an absolute legend in the Sydney dining and Japanese whisky scene. He somehow manages to run the counter and bar while keeping service seamless and effortlessly enjoyable. Warm, intuitive and a genius at pairings, he matched a perfect Chablis and impeccable sake to the rhythm of this amazing menu. Recommendations for anyone reading this: Opt for sake or wine pairing. Joel's selections heighten each course without overpowering subtler flavours. Book well in advance, as the room's intimacy means it fills up quickly. Arrive on time and hungry as the progression is calibrated to take you from delicate to decadent and missing a course would be a shame.

I live in Japan. I visited Besuto Omakase as soon as I arrived in Sydney. Some familiar flavors got upgraded with the chef’s expertise. From presentation, to flavor, to wine and sake pairing… everything was professionally catered for with a smile. Can’t wait to go back.

I booked Omasake Besuto only because other omakase restaurants were fully booked. I was already hesitant since this place had many bad reviews years ago, but the recent positive ones made me think it was fine. Sadly, it wasn’t. The portions were very small, not filling at all, and the food was overly salty we had to drink a lot of water afterward. For over $900 for two people, the quality was far from worth it. The chef introduced the beef without even mentioning what grade it was (M7, M9, A9?), and the steamed egg with sea urchin was unpleasantly fishy. I also noted it was our anniversary, hoping for a small thoughtful touch, but all they did was put a candle on lemon sorbet. Even the guest next to us celebrating a birthday got the exact same thing. For the price, everything felt lazy, uninspired, and disappointing. Definitely not a place I would return to.

Oborozuki is a newly opened Japanese fusion restaurant and bar in Sydney, offering a blend of kaiseki and teppanyaki cuisine. Situated at Circular Quay, it provides stunning views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge from its high glass-encased levels. The restaurant boasts the largest kaiseki dining room in Australia and features private teppanyaki rooms. Guests can savor multi-course meals while enjoying the Vivid lights from comfortable seating amidst lavish interiors with direct harbor views.
Visited Oborozuki for an anniversary and was completely blown away by every aspect of the experience. The interior is absolutely stunning, with beautiful design and a calm, luxurious ambience that set the perfect mood. The staff were incredibly sweet and genuinely thoughtful. They went above and beyond in the best way possible, making us feel so cared for the entire night. Our main server was outstanding and brought so much warmth to the evening. Every dish we had was delicious and beautifully crafted. You could taste the creativity and care in every bite, with each element feeling unique and perfectly balanced. The view overlooking the harbour during vivid was amazing and added an extra touch of magic to the whole experience. Highly recommend Oborozuki for any special occasion :)

We had 3 course meals and added green salad and kipfler potatoes. Every dish was impeccably cooked and presented. Complexity of flavour enhanced the top quality ingredients. We throughly enjoyed each dish. We were so full by the time get to the dessert. The staff were all friendly and attentive. They accommodated our dairy free (only one person) requirements and navigated us which dish to avoid. The entrance is quite hidden from Macquarie street. This restaurant is perfect for special occasion, we celebrated a birthday. The dairy free birthday dessert was yum and music box playing happy birthday song was a lovely touch. I loved the tooth fish for main. It was delicate yet perfectly cooked with locket miso glaze.

I chose Oborozuki to celebrate my fiancé’s 40th birthday, and it was an absolutely superb experience. The service was flawless, and every detail was perfectly executed. Simon served our meal, and Til presented our sake — beautifully offered from a Louis Vuitton trunk, which was such a unique touch. Thank you, Oborozuki, for making my partner’s birthday dinner so memorable. The food was exquisite; we chose the four-course menu and were so full by the end that we couldn’t even finish the petit fours. The complimentary birthday cake and candle were a lovely surprise. I also appreciated the intimate and exclusive atmosphere — the restaurant isn’t too large, which made the experience feel even more special. Definitely a 5/5. We’ll be back for sure! Chris and Audrey

Food was really good, with flavours and ingredients that matched super well. Went with the a la carte, which was a decent amount of food without it being too much. Stand out was the toothfish with its amazing textures and the desserts that easily rival any great dessert or cake bar. Service was immaculate and attentive, with an awesome highlight when they bring out the toothfish in a smoky box so you can enjoy the aroma before they prepare it you. Atmosphere was great, with a nice view of the ferry harbour. Tables and dining areas are well spaced apart so it isn't too noisy.

My third time here, and each time always blows me away. This is my first time trying the new Spring menu and it's next level. The way every dish and drink is presented is incredible. I found myself staring at plates longer than I should, just taking in the colours, textures and details. And then when you finally taste it, it’s even better than it looks, every flavour is considered, every ingredient has a purpose and you can feel the thought and care behind every dish. We had a beautiful three-course dinner: Kingfish and Scallop Sashimi to start, Gundagai Lamb and Maremma Duck for the mains, and Ispahan and Banana Chokorēto for dessert. What I love most is the personal touches. The staff take the time to explain each dish, answer questions and make sure the experience is tailored to you. I don’t drink, but even I'm always impressed when they roll out the Louis Vuitton trunk, it’s such a theatrical moment. You get to choose your own sake glass based on your favourite colour, and it just adds to how special everything feels. Every element, from presentation to service, is executed with such care that it makes the whole experience feel rare and elevated. Even if you’re not a foodie, this is a place that makes you feel like you’re part of something remarkable. It’s the kind of experience that stays with you and the kind that makes you pause, really notice and appreciate the beauty and craft behind every detail. That's what fine dining should do! From start to finish this was the most wonderful, exceptional and beautiful dining experience EVER! Thank you to the incredible chef, our brilliant waitress Ana and the wine guru Kim. We loved everything… the staff were so attentive and genuinely knew their stuff and seemed so proud/happy to work at Oborozuki (we can see why)! There are no words that could fully express the food - so beautifully presented, incredibly delicious with such creative & stunning presentation. Wow wow wow! Don’t hesitate… book a table as it’s an experience not to be missed. Thank you so much Oborozuki ❤️❤️❤️❤️

(4.5 stars) Recreating the glowing briefcase scene from Pulp Fiction, a white-gloved waiter opens a suitcase to reveal a backlit collection of sake cups. It’s just one way Oborozuki endeavours to make your night special. Another way is with high staffing ratios: at one point there were four staff members fussing over our table. It certainly makes a four course menu ($220/head) feel like a degustation, especially when it includes all the fine dining bells and whistles—snacks, pre-dessert and petit fours—that seemed to become more scarce post-COVID. So hold strong through the upsells, as our waitress assured me, it’s plenty of food without needing add-ons. And if you’re chasing value in the drinks, choose wine rather than sake as the markups are lower, particularly on the excellent 2022 Mulline Portarlington Chardonnay ($90). Sommelier Donggeon Kim is knowledgeable and friendly. Starting with a flurry of snacks bested by the negitoro temaki, the eats were more avant-garde than I was expecting. The coral trout, for example, teams the crisp-skinned wedge of fish with spanner crab, preserved kumquat, purple broccolini, saffron bisque, nori puree, and romanesco cauliflower. There are a lot of elements, so it confounds the palate and stretches the mind, as you try to process what you’re eating. To aid comprehension nearly every dish has elements presented at the table, from the seaweeds you’ll taste in the takikomi rice, to the standout Mareema duck that’s dry aged for ten days with its taut dimpled skin encrusted with shiso seeds, coriander seeds and Sichuan pepper. The end result is fireworks. First course dishes start simpler, like beef tartare built over a fancy French hash brown (pomme paillasson), with earthy umami built using smoked eel (unagi), tamari and beetroot. Desserts look highbrow but play to more familiar flavours. ‘Mango’ reminded me of a Weiss bar, and banana chokoreto had a Choc Yogo edge. The pre-dessert of rice milk and vanilla sorbet under a sour gel with ribbons of nashi pear was extraordinary. While hectic in places, the dishes here don’t jangle. Maybe they don’t all reach harmonious, but experimentation should be praised. And while the floor team feel green in places, they try harder to make you feel important than some Sydney spots with more hats. The view and internal architecture is also better than most.

Review: My wife and I recently celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary at Oborozuki in Sydney, and it was an evening that truly surpassed every expectation. For such a significant milestone, we were looking for an exceptional experience, and Oborozuki delivered a night of pure, unforgettable indulgence. We chose the four-course A La Carte menu, and decided to elevate the experience further with the addition of the caviar. From the very first bite to the last, the food was simply out of this world. The Japanese-French fusion cuisine is executed with incredible artistry and precision, offering a delicate yet bold balance of flavours that was unlike anything we've tasted before. Each dish was a masterpiece, both visually stunning and exquisitely prepared, demonstrating the highest level of culinary skill. What made the night so profoundly memorable, however, was the absolutely amazing staff. Their service was impeccable—attentive without being intrusive, knowledgeable, and genuinely warm. They made us feel special from the moment we arrived, acknowledging our anniversary and ensuring every detail of our evening was flawless. They truly went above and beyond, and their efforts were instrumental in making our 27th anniversary celebration so memorable. A recommendation I would strongly urge fellow diners to take is to opt for the sake and wine pairing with the food. The sommelier’s selections were inspired, and the matching of the two with the courses was phenomenal, enhancing the intricate flavours of the meals and making the whole experience just that much more enjoyable. Oborozuki is more than just a restaurant; it is a destination for a truly special occasion. The combination of spectacular food, top-tier service, and exquisite pairings creates a luxurious and deeply satisfying dining experience. Highly, highly recommended—we can’t wait to return!

Authentic Japanese restaurant
Restaurant
Mensho Tokyo Sydney, a renowned ramen chain with a Michelin star, made its debut in Sydney in April 2024 and quickly drew long queues. Chef Tomoharu Shono's farm-to-bowl philosophy emphasizes locally-sourced ingredients, and the menu features just six types of ramen. Diners are encouraged to focus on their own bowls without sharing. The restaurant also offers sake pairings recommended by the staff.
Wanted to try this place for soo long since it opened in Sydney and today we got to! Came a 15 minutes early expecting a line but we were front of queue. Service was quick, food exquisite and delicious. I ordered the signature toripaitan. Nice thick chicken broth which was very creamy and the pork, duck and chicken were amazing. We also got the Aji Fry and Kurozu Karaage which I think are a must try. My new favourite ramen spot in Sydney :)
Richard L — Google review
Quite a hyped-up spot, with a line already forming at 12pm on the weekend (about a 15 min wait). Service was fine (pretty standard chain-restaurant level), but we found the food quite disappointing, especially for the price. Signature Toripaitan: The chashu combination was decent, and I actually enjoyed the duck chashu as a creative touch. The enoki chips on top were also nice. But their “signature” chicken soup just tasted similar to what you’d get from any ramen shop in Sydney - maybe a little creamier, but nothing special and definitely not worth the premium. The noodles were the real letdown: wavy egg noodles instead of the traditional thin Japanese ramen noodles. Maybe it’s meant as fusion or Tokyo style, but for me it took away the ramen element entirely. Tasmania Shio: The seafood clear broth was better than the Toripaitan, but still not particularly impressive, and felt a bit too oily. The abalone was tasty, though the scallops didn’t taste that fresh. This one at least came with proper ramen noodles, which made it a better option overall. The enoki chips were honestly the highlight of the meal - unique and tasty. Overall - if you’re a foodie looking for authentic, traditionally made Japanese ramen, there are better places to be.

The rich, flavorful broths and springy noodles are absolute perfection. Every bowl is a taste of Tokyo in the heart of Sydney! The service is always attentive and welcoming. Can't wait to come back and try more of their delicious offerings! Highly recommend Mensho Tokyo Ramen!

Best ramen I’ve had. Torisaipan ramen came with a soup that was thick and flavoursome. We also had the kaarage chicken which came with a Japanese vinegary sauce which was delicious. The prices are on the high side but quality very good. Portions are also smaller than average. There was a small queue when we came on Wed night at 7pm.

TL;DR: Had an amazing experience here, even with my 2-year-old! 👶✨ I’m traveling in Sydney with my family and we waited about 30 minutes in line, and totally worth it! We tried the Classic, Signature, Corn, and Matchamisu dessert, and every single one was excellent except the dessert which was a bit too sweet for us. The broth was rich and flavorful, and all the toppings were just perfect. Also, special thanks to Ellisa, the female staff member, who was incredibly kind and attentive — she offered what we needed before we even asked. 🙏 Would definitely love to come back when we visit Sydney again! 💛

Mensho Tokyo Sydney truly lives up to the hype. The moment you step into the laneway, you feel like you’ve discovered a hidden gem in the heart of the city. The staff were warm, attentive, and clearly passionate about what they do. I ordered the Toripaitan ramen, and it was perfection — the broth was rich, creamy, and full of depth, while the noodles were silky and clearly made fresh in-house. Every bite felt refined yet comforting. The toppings were generous and beautifully balanced, especially the tender chashu and seasoned egg. The atmosphere was modern and cozy, with a great view of the open kitchen. Even though there was a short wait, it was absolutely worth it. You can tell every bowl is made with care and precision. Definitely one of the best ramen spots in Sydney — perfect for anyone who appreciates quality, creativity, and authentic Japanese flavours with a modern twist. I’ll 100% be coming back! 🍜🔥

Hakata Gensuke Regent Place - Ramen Professional, located on George Street, is a go-to spot for a satisfying ramen experience. Renowned for its creamy tonkotsu broth crafted by ramen legend Kousuke Yoshimura, the menu boasts 10 unique tonkotsu variations that cater to every ramen enthusiast's palate.
This is the first time we tried their ramen. They have such a good value set meal. We ordered mini rame came with 2 onigiri. I chose mentaiko and yuzu. We hade 2 mathca drinks which is apple and lychee. The matcha drinks was refreshing and good not overly sweet. The ramen had a thick broth and was really so deep in flavour. They provide condiment on each table. Spicy pickle was so good when you mixed it with ramen. Beware full there because it was quite spicy (which I don't mind it). Service is good and the place is clean. Recommended to come early before rush hours. Otherwise you'll have to queue.

We tried Hakata Gensuke for the first time and they have such good value set! We got the mini ramen set for $22.50 which came with 2 onigiri and a choice of side, where we chose the gyoza. We also got the Black Fire ramen which had half rich garlic broth and half spicey which I thought was so cool!
Viv — Google review
Finally tried Hakata Gensuke in Sydney and it’s absolutely worth the hype! 🍜 The Shoyu Tonkotsu Ramen had a rich and creamy broth, and I chose the soft noodles which perfectly absorbed the soup. The bamboo shoots were thick and flavorful without any strong smell. The Ontama Karaage Don was amazing crispy fried chicken topped with a soft-boiled egg, super tasty and not greasy. The Unagi with Seaweed rice ball was so fragrant and satisfying, and the Edamame was a refreshing side. Love how you can customise noodle firmness, spice, and salt levels! Perfect for a quick lunch or casual dinner in the city definitely one of the best ramen spots in Sydney! 🇯🇵✨

Revisited this affordable ramen spot that’s conveniently located right outside Town Hall station! I finally got the chance to try their new mini ramen set that comes with a small version of their signature ramen bowl, 2 onigiris and a side and you can add on extras too. The side is originally edamame but you can upgrade it for $2 to gyoza or karaage. I loved their signature ramen which had a delicious and flavourful broth. I was pleasantly surprised by their onigiris too! I tried their Cha-mayo (pork chashu + mayo) and unagi onigiris which were both so fresh. The unagi was my fav of the two. They also have tsukemen which I think is new as I haven’t seen it before! It had thick and bouncy noodles and the broth was nice and rich. The portion was huge too and worth the price.

I’ve been to this ramen shop many times and it never disappoints! The new Mini Set is actually super filling, even though the name sounds small. The ramen is rich and tasty, and the gyoza is crispy and juicy. Definitely one of my favorite solo dining spots in Town Hall!
Lizhu P — Google review
Good value mini ramen meal set that includes signature tonkotsu ramen, 2 x onigiri, side, chef’s daily small dish. The yuzu miso onigiri is flavourful and freshly prepared ie no soggy seaweed. The tonkotsu ramen wasn’t particularly memorable but not terrible either. The seating on communal tables is a bit close quartered and with stools only, we sat with our bags and jackets in laps so it felt a tad cumbersome. Some specials on the full sized ramen menu that can only be ordered dining in store and I’d be happy to return to try.

I gave Hakata Gensuke 5 star for their tasty food and friendly service. I highly recommend God Fire Plus ramen as you can choose the spicy level and the ramen is so delicious with soft boiled egg and pork. The mini ramen set is a must try for kids. You not only get a mini ramen but also 2 onigiris and 1 side dish with $2 extra plus a drink with your choice if you pay $2 extra. I also like their Chicken Karaage because they were crunchy outside but tender and juicy inside. I love the flavor of Hakata ramen and definitely will visit again!

TenTo is a Japanese restaurant that offers a delightful culinary experience with meticulous food presentation and fine offerings. The charming ambiance adds to the overall dining pleasure, making it an ideal spot for a meal. Tucked away in a side street, this gem of a find boasts exquisite and well-presented food, including interesting and unusual dishes that are incredibly delicious. With unbelievably good service and decadent flavors, TenTo leaves a lasting impression with its exceptional cuisine and presentation.
Twas a cold and rainy autumn night and we were four friends looking to warm up with some ramen and warm up with ramen we did. There was a broad range of selections between us, with the chicken, duck and salmon ramen all being represented. Graham gave the salmon a 9.5/10. The flavours were bold and the salmon was cooked sensationally. Graham especially enjoyed the presentation although was suspicious the larger bowl was perhaps a distraction from the salmon ramen being a smaller serve than the others. This claim remains unsubstantiated. Rose had the chicken and I had the duck. Rosie rated hers 8/10 and I give mine 8.5/10. We were in agreement with Graham regarding the boldness of the flavours. We had fun tipping the ingredients from the wooden board into the bowl. John was an outlier and gave the chicken a 6/10. His major critique was it was too buttery. While we noted you put the butter in yourself therefore have discretion as to how much is added, it was a fair criticism to state the butter should either have the optimal portion served or the waiter should provide some advice around how much to add. Overall it’s a cool little spot and if there’s better ramen in Surry Hills, I ain’t aware of it.

I stumbled upon this Japanese restaurant and had no idea it even existed in Surry Hills it’s definitely tucked away, but in the best way possible. The food was absolutely amazing, and the presentation was super impressive. Plus, the clay pot they used added such a cool touch to the whole experience. The service was just as great, and the cocktail I had was the perfect finishing touch. Highly recommend checking it out if you're in the area!

Had the ochazuke with salmon - fresh, delicious, and full of flavour. Nice variety on the menu, making it an experience worth having. Prices lean a bit higher for a café, but the environment is pleasant and the location convenient.

One of the best brunch spots in Sydney. It’s quiet, it’s extremely flavourful and i think some of the best service as well. The food comes out really quickly, and the range of stuff they have is great as well. I think it’s a perfect date spot too if you want somewhere that is light and high quality. Will obviously be coming back
Lawrance — Google review
We came here for dinner, but since it was full inside, we had to sit outside where the heater wasn’t really warm enough. The food looked absolutely stunning, but the beautiful presentation didn’t match the taste. Both the eel rice and salmon rice we ordered were quite bland - under seasoned, while the ramen seemed well-seasoned and authentic. Overall, the food was unusual and acceptable, but the 10% weekend surcharge felt unnecessary, especially given that the dishes here are severely overpriced. The staff, however, were absolutely wonderful—very friendly—and they gave us a 15% discount because the food came out a bit slower than expected. They had clearly had a very hard day due to being short-staffed, so I’ll give the restaurant 3 stars instead of 2.
Vinnie — Google review
Japanese and Asian fusion restaurant located in Surry Hills. They have some unique dishes. Great for those that want to try Japanese dishes with a different twist. They have a long list of special non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages, but the ones we ordered were not that good. Most dishes tasted alright but a bit overpriced. Especially with the 10% surcharge, not sure if it's worth it. They have outdoor and indoor dining areas. Very quiet on a Saturday night. Made a booking but there was no wait. Staff messed up the invoices and caused a bit of confusion but all resolved in the end. Worth trying once but won't be visiting again.

Came in for the set lunch, such a great deal. The food came out really fast, and we were done in about 40 minutes. Service was quick but we didn’t feel rushed. We loved HACO! This is an intimate dining space with superb food. We chose the lunch sitting and were not disappointed. The tempura is served individually and is not rushed. We both chose the Meat Lover and were blown away by the Wagyu beef, the pork belly and duck were melt in the mouth! The cheese tempura was a great surprise. We went on to order the abalone and large prawn. We would have loved to have tried the sake selection shower we opted for the green tea. An awesome experience and will be back

It was a pleasant experience to dine at HACO Sydney. Service was attentive , great atmosphere and food was absolutely delicious. Our favourite dishes were the Chawanmushi and abalone. The lobster bisque totally nailed it . Wish we could have a bigger portion 🤣 Loved the dessert, not too sweet and the little cube of sweet potato made the whole dish complete . It’s located in a tiny lane way , kind of a hidden gem around the busy Sydney Commercial area.

Overall rating: 7.5 Seasonal Tempura Omakaze had hit and misses but mostly hits. Service staff were very attentive and deserves the mandatory service charge of 5%. Omakaze dishes in order: Scallop - 10 Perfectly cooked and amazing sauce to partner a well balanced first started dish. Sashimi - 9 Standard well matched Japanese quality dish. Chawanmushi - 9 A very nice twist with very fresh seasoned prawns. Prawn Tempura - 5 First disappointment, Tempura prawn cooked to perfection but that's all. No surprises with the Match salt or Tempura sauce soup combination. John Dory - 6 My fish was slightly overcooked but my partners were done perfectly. Probably just my luck. The curry salt was awesome. Zucchini flower - 8.5 The soup base that paired with the zucchini flower was amazing. The stuffing within the zucchini flower needed more personality. A little disappointed that the stem wasn't included in the dish and was thrown away even it was tempura'd before serving. Yuzu - 8 Taste is a 10, but disappointed that it was noted as a dish on the menu when it was a Palette cleanser. Abalone - 8 Abalone cooked perfectly, and sauce was very well balanced but not my cup of tea. Market fish - 9 Same as above, cooked well and sauce was amazing. Wagyu - 11 out of 10 Superb, the tempura oyster wrapped with a5 Wagyu beef and sauces was perfection. Every bite was, the amount was just right for those with high cholesterol 😉 Ramen - 9.5 Chicken soup broth amazing, not enough noodles to have it all. Char sui slice was done well. Desert - 10 Well done with the sweet potatoes tempura and ice cream combi.

celebrated my birthday dinner last month at @haco.sydney 💛 it was my first omakase experience and it did not disappoint! my favourite dishes of the night were the dessert of tempura fried sweet potato and the market fish of the night with that amazing sauce, so glad they gave us bread to soak all of it up in 🤤

Had the chef's menu consisting of twelve dishes. The restaurant specialises in tempura with a modern spin. The dishes were creative and pretty tasty in general, but some of the sauces used to pair with the dishes such as the sashimi and the market fish were not to my liking. The prawn tempura and the wagyu dish topped with foie gras shavings were the highlights in the course. Service was good and the chefs explains the dishes as they are being served.

Best Japanese Restaurant!!! 😱😍🤪 I was intrigued about this place when I was scrolling through Maps with my partner. We were looking for a smart casual vibe to celebrate a recent accomplishment. I had a really great time at Amuro, chatting, drinking and enjoying the dishes together with my friend. I definitely see myself coming back again to introduce my other friends to this cute little spot. Price-wise we found was quite decent for most of the dishes, but as there is no drink menu you'll have to ask the bartender what this may look like as we were in for a surprise with our sake glasses (but was really delicious so it was fine). The only thing to keep in mind is they do not take reservations until you become a regular customer, so until then it is purely a walk-in-only policy and the condition of entry is to order one drink. Also, note that this spot can be quite busy even during the weekdays so get there early if you can. I cannot wait to come back and bring my bestie here as I know she'll enjoy this place. I plan to visit again!

I came to Sydney for a filming project and stopped by one of my favorite cafés — that’s how I discovered Amuro , a truly impressive Japanese restaurant that stands out for its refined atmosphere, thoughtful dishes, and genuine service. The space is small and intimate, with warm wooden tones that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a hidden izakaya in Tokyo. Sitting at the counter allows you to watch the chef at work — every dish feels like a quiet performance. The food is beautifully balanced and seasonal, made with fresh ingredients and great attention to detail. Every bite reflects the chef’s care and craftsmanship. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and their service feels natural and unhurried. Dining at Amuro is more than just a meal — it’s an experience that combines flavor, ambiance, and artistry. Whether you’re here for a cozy dinner with friends or a special night with someone you love, it’s a place you’ll definitely want to return to.

My recent second visit to Amuro was just as special as my first! The food is divine with perfectly memorable smaller dishes that are cooked and served in front of you. The sake list is extensive and as exceptional as the "kitchen theatre" on display. This experience is made more special by the attentive and warm service of the friendly staff who are happy to bring you on a journey of Japanese food excellence.

Amuro in Darlinghurst is one of those rare places that stays with you. From the moment you step inside, you're welcomed with warm, thoughtful service — the kind that makes you feel like a regular even if it's your first visit. The staff know the menu inside out and genuinely care about making your night memorable. And you definitely love the detail including different chopsticks holders, with cute lights! The food is where Amuro really shines. The snapper sashimi is ultra-fresh and beautifully balanced, while the grilled salmon fish head is rich, smoky, and perfectly charred. The yaki mochi — grilled rice cake with a crispy outside and chewy center — was pure comfort. If you're lucky enough to visit on the weekend, don’t miss the prawn and shiso wonton soup — the wontons are plump and juicy, floating in a sweet, delicate broth that feels like a warm hug. The sake list is extensive and thoughtfully curated, with something for every palate. The staff are happy to guide you through it, matching your food with the perfect pour. Amuro is the kind of place you'll keep coming back to.

Authentic Japanese restaurant
Nomidokoro Indigo, located in the upscale suburb of Double Bay, offers a diverse all-day breakfast menu with options like beefy croque madame and breakfast burritos. The atmosphere is vibrant, perfect for people-watching from its tree-lined street setting. Despite being a Japanese eatery, it stands out for its simplicity and casualness, allowing guests to savor each exquisite dish without any pretentiousness.
Close, cosy, attentive staff and the best food. Dined on the 7/11/25 and was not disappointed at all. Had wanted to dine here for quite some time and a booking is essential. Greeted with smiles and a welcoming guide through the menu. Which has a wide variety of house specialties plus additional daily features. Being a Kokushu/Nihonshu/Sake specialist you are not disappointed for selections or the presentation of the menu.😉 The Orion beer on tap was very refreshing and a great and only option. Stand out dishes : Fire fly squid The duck The house miso pickled vegetables And The clams. If you haven’t been…. You should!!!!!

Came here for my 40th birthday dinner last night. No way is this a typical Izakaya restaurant. This is more of a sake bar than anything. They cook the food in the kitchen and serves them to you at the table. Nothing special except the variety of sake. While the choice of sake and food quality was good, it was definitely not worth 5 stars. The river shrimp karage was good. The other dishes were nothing spectacular. That's about it. We ordered a wagyu beef brisket which took almost an hour to arrive! And the previous course was served 30mins prior. Definitely not worth an hr wait. Service was severely lacking. When I mentioned that the Wagyu took too long, the wait staff offered a simple "sorry". I had received better hospitality from sushi shops! The aircon also needs servicing. Water keep dripping down my back during the entire dinner. My shirt was wet from the air con by the time we ended out dining experience. Overall, a huge disappointment at this highly rated place.

We were lucky to secure a table on the sidewalk on a public holiday. It’s an izakaya in a way, serving mostly sake with small side dishes. Service was surprisingly quick and we finished dinner in an hour. We loved the sashimi, which was incredibly fresh! And the yuzu wine on the rocks was fun (see video).

I’ve been here twice in the past two months, and every visit feels like a little trip to Japan. The space is good for smaller groups of two to four, due to the seating setup—any bigger and it’s a bit tricky to chat with everyone. The menu changes regularly, which keeps things exciting, and there are some standout dishes like the school prawns, cheese paired with pickles, and the agedashi tofu. The sake list is also extensive, so there’s plenty to explore.

(4.5 stars) Some restaurants leave you feeling warmly toward them. Tumbling out of a tiny, hole-in-the-wall on Liverpool Street in Darlinghurst, Nomidokoro Indigo is one such place. We stumbled upon this small collection of mismatched tables set under a retractable canvas awning a few weeks back after an event at the National Art School. We marvelled at the tiny interior, where twelve guests can sit facing a counter that concludes in a kitchen separated only by noren curtains. We resolved to come back and try it, and last night we left feeling very glad that we did. The izakaya’s menu revolves around sake. Fittingly, you’ll spin the bottle to make your selection, or rely upon friendly and knowledgeable staff. Ichinokura Enyu tokubetsu junmai ($27/180ml) suits kingfish sashimi ($19) fanned out over washed onion. It’s plucked from a daily selection of snacks, like eggplant and quail eggs ($8.50) and corn and onion fritters ($8.50). Both are served cold, designed to take the edge off your hunger as you neck that first important beverage and forget about your day. Sake steamed baby clams ($19) are like diving into the ocean. The seductive blend of butter, sake and clam juice warrants a sake upgrade to the umami-rich Kozaemon Bizen Omachi kimoto junmai ($38/180ml). Salty sea water stays with me through chawanmushi ($19). Here creamy hunks of king prawn and briny bubbles of salmon roe burst over warm, perfectly textured custard. The food here is effortless and simple, like the slightly-too-firm torched jacket potato ($16.50) topped with squid fermented in its own funky juices. Scallops ($22.50), painted with soy butter, only wanted for their adductor muscles to be cut to release them from their shells. We ended our night eating roast duck slices glazed in soy and chilli yuzu ($25), wondering if we had just teleported to Tokyo.

Izakaya style restaurant - transports you right back to Japan. The food was delicious - 10/10 (only the tamago was a miss for me)! We ordered a few different sakes and they were all amazing. The seating was a bit cramped but I highly recommend booking the bar seating (limited) so you don’t have to stand or sit outside. The service was outstanding and the people were attentive, quick and kind. My only criticism is about the price of food - while I understand the location is quite popular, I was a bit shook as to how expensive some vegetarian things were. My favourite dish was the Japanese pickles + cream cheese however for the portion size, you’re paying $20 which is insane! I won’t be returning as I tried pretty much everything on the menu as I went with friends. I highly recommend but be prepared to spend a bit :)
Sameera K — Google review
Takes you back to Japan and how! This izakaya-inspired joint had the fastest and most friendly service. A great selection of Sake, beers and whiskeys. A perfectly curated food menu with light bites + heaps of vegetarian options. Everything we were served was a 10/10.
Laveena T — Google review
Atmosphere and service very lovely (5 stars)! Food 2 stars. If you have a gluten intolerance this place is definitely a no go for you (it doesn’t even have a GF soy sauce. Very limited food options for GF but my partner still got very sick after the restaurant so it wasn’t fully GF after all). Otherwise the food unfortunately wasn’t great either, sashimi was ok but probably not the freshest one. Eggplant dish I could not eat, meat too well done and micro portion, scallops were ok but very well done and lacked flavour. Overall it’s overpriced and lacks flavour ($165 for one sake and few small entree size dishes for the quality & portion size).

Nestled in Chatswood, Sou Ramen Lab is a hidden gem where culinary passion meets authentic Japanese flavors. This cozy café, helmed by a former chef from Gumshara and Yasaka, serves up an ever-evolving menu that features a delightful chicken-based broth as its staple. Diners can also indulge in rotating specials like tsukemen alongside classic Japanese dishes and robust Colombian coffee.
Really good value karage chicken rice bowl. The chicken was crispy and juicy, accompanied with drizzles or Japanese mayonnaise and fresh spring onions. Portion sizes were good and makes you satisfied. Overall, a good experience and will be trying their ramen next time.
Tristan L — Google review
The quality is far worse than their North Sydney shop, both in flavour and presentation. Held high expectations ordered their signature rich chicken broth ramen. However it was quite disappointing. It’s called richi richi supposed to be a very rich broth but what I got was super thin broth, no flavor and richness at all. And the noodle is totally different as well, it should be the flat noodle so it can coat all the rich broth when you eat it. However they served this noodle with normal round noodle. I knew what this Ramon should taste like cuz I went to their North Sydney shop million times. Won’t come back to this Chatswood shop anymore, left with anger. (Only the first pic from Chatswood shop, all other pics and videos from North Sydney shop, so you guys could see the differences.)

Came here for lunch and had the Tokyo shoyu ramen. I enjoyed it a lot. The broth was mellow yet complex, the noodles were nicely chewy, and the chashu and ajitama were well done too. Would come again to try the other ramen.
C K — Google review
We had the best ramen here in Chatswood! 🍜🔥 The broth was rich and full of flavour, the noodles were perfectly chewy, and the chashu pork just melted in our mouths. Every bowl was a comforting hug in a bowl. Super cosy vibes, quick service, and so satisfying—definitely a must-try if you’re in the area! 🙌✨
Christine M — Google review
This is just abt the best ramen you can get in Sydney period, flavour profile is off the charts for both their chintan and paitan base, and extremely balanced to boot, unlike a lot of other ramen places that seem to use salt to make up for the lack of actual flavours in their soup base. A must-try for any self-professed ramen aficionado imho!
Li C — Google review
We tried this spot the other day and was a little surprised but not in a good way. The black garlic creamy ramen was SO thick it was hardly a soup. More like a gravy and extremely starchy. The Tokyo shoyu ramen was ok but not a stand out. If you are to order here I would recommend trying other dishes

New Yamanishi is a trendy Japanese restaurant with Spanish influences located at the corner of Falcon Street & Sophia Street. The intimate and lively brasserie offers a variety of dining options, including set menus, a la carte dishes, and daily specials. The menu features signature ramen for lunch and izakaya-style dishes such as yakitori skewers, spicy tuna tacos, and matcha churros for dinner.
It’s hidden in a corner of Falcon Street toward Crows Nest side. The food is more Japanese fusion style, very nice & tasty. Ensure you arrive earlier to have a meal here. The restaurant is quite small. It’s a comfortable environment, full of Japanese authentic themes. Park behind the restaurant’s small side street.

Excellent food, lovely people. Prawn & Squid Ink Ramen noodles and Oxtail Ramen were really tasty and very different to the same old, same old. At under $30 beats paying $35-45 for a bowl of pasta. Had Sangria and Ice-creams too, perfect for a warm day. Was very quiet at lunch, but last we went it was a queue out the door.

We recently dined at this cozy Japanese restaurant on a rainy evening and were warmly welcomed despite arriving late. The staff kindly held our table, which was a great start to the evening. The four of us opted for the set menu as it seemed reasonably priced and included all the signature dishes we wanted to try. Each dish was delightful, with the standout flavors showcasing the restaurant’s expertise. My only suggestion would be to slightly reduce the amount of rice served with the eel for better balance. As the evening went on and the restaurant got busier, the second half of our meal took a bit longer to arrive, which was a little puzzling since we were one of the first tables to be served. Overall, it was an enjoyable dining experience. I didn’t manage to capture photos of all the dishes—some were too tempting, and we dove in before I remembered to snap a picture!

We had a great time, rocked up without a booking looking for a great time and the service was fantastic. We got the omakase set and a couple of bottled of sake. Fantastic. We got so drunk but the service was amazing. It was the dinner before my wedding and the service and food was amazing. We're going back same time next week!

A must-visit Japanese izakaya in Crows Nest! I’ve never finished the soup of a ramen bowl in Sydney — until I tried their Wagyu Oxtail Ramen 🍜! Light yet flavorful, totally addictive! ✨ The grilled Wagyu Harami 🥩 was tender and full of rich taste. And the matcha churros 🍵 for dessert? So fun to shake the bag and break them apart with friends — cute and delicious! 💖 This place brings a taste of Japan with cozy vibes and amazing food. Highly recommend!
Lena H — Google review
I came here for the wagyu oxtail ramen with a friend but was pleasantly impressed by the other dishes on menu! I ended up coming back at dinner for the set menu to celebrate my partners birthday which was very enjoyable! Want to go back again to try more menu items especially in the dinner menu!

Absolutely LOVE this place! It’s hands-down my favorite Japanese restaurant. The ox tail ramen is next-level delicious — rich, flavorful, and perfectly comforting. The salmon tacos are super fresh and packed with flavor, and the garlic mushrooms? Mouth-watering! Every dish I’ve tried has been a hit. The staff and the chef are always so warm and friendly — you can really feel the passion they put into everything. Great service, amazing vibe, and food that keeps you coming back. Highly recommend!

Japanese restaurant
Yoshii’s Omakase is an iconic Japanese dining experience in Sydney, led by master chef Yoshii Ryuichi. The restaurant offers contemporary Japanese cuisine served in Kaiseki style, with small portions of various dishes. Located at Crown Sydney, this exclusive 10-seater dining experience comes with a minimum spend of $350 per person but promises pristine seafood and a top-notch sushi procession.
Yoshii Omakase Experience the pinnacle of food craftsmanship. Every dish is a masterpiece, showcasing not only the finest ingredients but also an unwavering commitment to quality in service. After several visits, I am continually blown away by the expertise of the two master chefs, who transform each meal into a delightful culinary journey. Their exceptional creations consistently leave a lasting impression, making every dining experience truly remarkable..
Le D — Google review
Yoshii’s attention to detail and the care he put into each course truly made the evening unforgettable. However the server ruined the whole fine dining experience when we saw her way in clearing the table - Putting the chopsticks paper band into the bowl in front of me & my mom while clearing may seem like an innocent time-saver, but it’s frowned upon in fine dining. Instead, remove the trash individually and put it on a tray out of direct sight.
Vivian L — Google review
Made a reservation for the omakase which is located in a private room at the entrance to Nobu. The course included about ten pieces of sushi, a beautifully arranged plate of sashimi representing the current seasonality, and several other dishes. All the seafood used in the omakase were very fresh and was especially noticeable when tasting the sashimi. The Kagoshima wagyu was perfectly cooked, very tender and marbled with no gristle at all. Each piece of nigiri sushi was delicious and satisfying; some of the highlights includes the squid which was texturally unique to the bite due to how it was cut, the fatty kamatoro tuna which comes in only a small quantity from the collar, the fresh and smooth Hokkaido sea urchin, the soft and sweet pearl meat which is said to be superior to scallop, and the fluffy sea eel drizzled with chef Yoshii's 32 years old concentrated sweet soy sauce. The egg omelette was also very unique and tasty; the top and bottom layer has a sponge cake texture and the centre was like a creamy scramble egg which is barely holding it's shape. Overall it was a great dining experience, food wise as well as the friendly and attentive service from the staff as well as the chef's interactions with every customer.
Barry — Google review
This was the best omakase experience I’ve ever had. I’ve tried Michelin-starred omakase restaurants in Japan, but this was even better! They use the freshest ingredients from Tasmania and rice imported from Japan. The fish was cut and presented with perfect precision, and the rice had just the right texture, it was truly a work of art. I was genuinely impressed by the chefs’ skill, dedication, and sense of pride. I’d love to come back, if I can manage to get a reservation. It’s not easy to book!

Been a while since I last visited Yoshii-San and came this time to celebrate a friend's birthday. The room feels secluded - it is quiet and spacious. Staff was friendly overall, but did lack some consistency across the guest. Food wise, in general was spot on. Some dishes were slightly smaller than before, however the techniques are displayed in the dishes. The signature is quite consistent and there's a nice balance of flavour in each of the dishes. Produce is fresh and combines both local and imported ingredients. The tamagoyaki is still my favourite and the big mac, squid and pearl meat were on point. One of the best omakase in Sydney. Recommend you to try 😋😋👌
So M — Google review
We had an exceptional time. The restaurant perfectly balanced warm and friendly hospitality with perfectly timed service. The selection of dishes served highlighted the quality of produce and the chef's expertise. As there are only 10 seats everyone eats the same dish at the same time creating a very harmonious dining experience.
Tia M — Google review
Every dish was good (oh that dashi) but the highlight was definitely the sushi - granted they had the best ingredients, but everything was so meticulously thought out and prepared that even the most ordinary fish (say bonito) tasted incredible. It was interesting watching the chefs prepare the nigiris, but more importantly they were willing to go to some lengths to explain how things were prepared (what they did to bring out the umami), which helped you appreciate the food more - be sure to ask any questions you might have. Thanks so much Hyota-san and Yoshii-san for a great night, hope to see you again next season. Update after the second visit: I had my reservations cancelled twice due to the lockdowns and completely missed out the winter season. However one big advantage of Yoshii's is that they have a big enough budget to import fish from the other side of the world (yes, Japan) when it's summer and the produce is not as good in Australia. As to the food of the night, I felt the courses that came before the nigiris got even more refined - the smoothness introduced by the pumpkin to the chawanmushi, the texture and flavours of the egg yolk, uni and dashi combined - you just couldn't fault anything at all.
