The Magpie Café, located in Whitby, is a renowned waterfront eatery that has been serving traditional fish and chips and exquisite seafood dishes for decades. After being rebuilt following a fire, this historic establishment continues to draw long queues due to its stellar reputation for fresh fish and seafood sourced daily from local boats. Housed in a charming 18th-century merchant's house turned restaurant since 1939, it has become an iconic Yorkshire institution.
Wow, I can see why this place is so popular. Beautiful views, delicious food and a great atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and attentive. We didn't have to queue long to be seated but when we left the queue was quite long so be prepared for that. I had the fish pie which was so good! The portion size was great. My friends had fish and chips and they said the fish was amazing. We all really enjoyed it.

The food was as expected, fantastic! Best mushy peas I've ever had in my life. My husband was swooning over the fish and chips, and crab bisque...lol Service was fast and our waitress very pleasant. I had a little trouble navigating the stairs to enter, since I use a cane to walk, but I was very happy to see they had a lift inside to get to the floor with the restrooms.
Dee A — Google review
We had lunch here today. They sat us quickly. They are very helpful. The food was amazing cooked perfectly. The best cod and chips I have ever had. Chips light and fluffy. The batter was delicious and crispy. The cod was super fresh and flaky. And that’s coming from a fishmonger of 17 years. Also had their curry sauce. The best chip shop curry sauce I have ever had. A 10 star visit
David A — Google review
This is one of THE best fish restaurants I have ever visited. It was absolutely packed and we are glad we pre-booked. Considering how busy it was, we were served within 15-20mins. Size of the portions were more than expected. You MUST try the Sundaes too. 10/10!!
Emma M — Google review
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely fantastic experience at The Magpie Café! The food was delicious from start to finish. The fish and chips were top class, crispy, perfectly cooked, and full of flavour. We also tried the seafood medley, and it was amazing, fresh, well-seasoned, and beautifully presented. The service was friendly and efficient, making the whole visit even better. Highly recommend if you’re in the area and craving quality seafood 🍤 🦞

Wow! This is such a great spot! It's really popular, but the place is quite big, we waited for 15 minutes without a reservation. The food is so fresh! I really can say that the prawns were the best I've ever had. They were truly a delight. The salmon is really good as well. Fresh and delicious. This was the highlight of our Whitby trip!
Nikita — Google review
We pre-booked to avoid the queue and were seated promptly, though the table was quite small and a bit cramped. Starters were the highlight, especially the goat’s cheese salad and the black pudding bon bons, both packed with flavour. Mains were a mixed bag: the crab and chips were enjoyable, but the salmon salad was disappointing, with the salmon being quite tough. Overall, it was an okay experience, but we’ve had better meals elsewhere in Whitby.
Matt B — Google review
I ordered the Four Fish Platter with Cod, Haddock, Plaice, and Skate Wing. It was my first time trying Plaice and Skate Wing in a fish & chips style, and they were absolutely delicious perfectly cooked with a light, crispy golden batter and fresh flavour. The scallop starter was beautifully presented and just as tasty. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. A must-visit in Whitby for fresh seafood lovers!

Trenchers is a renowned fish and chips spot in Whitby, offering traditional dishes like prawn cocktails, lobsters, and fish pies. It's highly rated on TripAdvisor and known for its diverse menu including seafood salads, crab, lobster, fresh fish, homemade pies, and vegetarian options. Situated along Whitby's Harbour, it's an ideal stop for a meal after a beach stroll.
Absolutely amazing! The food at Trenchers is hands-down some of the best fish and chips I’ve ever had—crispy, perfectly cooked, and full of flavour. The quality and freshness really stood out. On top of that, the staff were incredible—friendly, welcoming, and genuinely helpful, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommend if you’re in Whitby!

I have gluten intolerance and I never get to try anything like fish pie. But the servers were extremely knowledgeable and even without me asking told me that I do not need to worry about cross contamination. Whenever I ask for anything related to gluten in London, people are confused. It's so refreshing to see a tourist town having such know about allergens. The food was great. Generous quantities and worth the money.
Colin S — Google review
Really good fish and chips! They cook their chips in beef dripping, but also have a vegetarian side cooked in vegetable oil. I was a little disappointed in the size of the cod. I ordered the large at £21.95 and it was no different in size, even smaller than some of the mediums I could see on others plates. The mushy peas were excellent, the curry sauce looked bland but was very tasty!
Arron H — Google review
The fish absolutely Very Good. I must say. The Salt And Pepper Squid is SMASHING. I would take 3 orders of squid over the fish it’s that good. And I love fish more than you know. The smoked fish excellent. Mixed plate of seafood very good.

Delicious! We had the most friendly and lovely server called Michelle 😀 It's a very busy restaurant, buzzing in fact. Everything was fabulous quality. Clean washrooms. Well worth a visit!

My favourite fish and chips restaurant in Whitby . Excellent fish and chips. Great service wether your eating in our takeaway. My wife and I had cod and chips. Small for her and a regular for me. They even do a large. Perfectly cooked meaty flakes of white fish and proper chips. Delicious
Steve S — Google review
Brilliant fish and chips! Shared them with my wife, as the portions are generous. The mushy peas were also excellent! Really impressed with the cleanliness of the restaurant, the staff were really polite! Price is irrelevant when recieving such high quality food and service!

Delicious fish n chips. Thin, crispy batter around fresh fluffy fish. They leave the skin on the fish which gives it extra flavor. Chips are thick and fluffy. Waitress very accommodating and fast service.

Royal Fisheries is a well-established fish 'n' chips shop and licensed cafe in Whitby, run by the Fusco family since the 1960s. The place is known for its traditional cooking methods and expertise in frying haddock, cod, plaice, and sole in their own-recipe batter using beef dripping. Despite being less famous than some competitors, it has garnered positive reviews for its flaky white fish and value for money.
In my opinion I don't think a trip to Whitby is complete without a visit to the Royal, the staff are very friendly and pleasant. Never before have I seen a fish and chips shop have crinkle chips which I thinks adds a nice touch for presentation and overall chip enjoyment. In a increasingly expensive fish and chip market, the Yorkshire deal is definitely worth the price. The batter had a healthy colour good crispness and did not get soggy and drop off which is top marks from me.
James S — Google review
Came here after seeing a recommendation on social media. Absolutely brilliant and an absolute hidden gem! The service was so quick and absolutely perfect, the food came so quickly and it was cooked to perfection. The best chips in Whitby for sure! And absolutely amazing experience overall. The staff were all so friendly and polite!
Amy — Google review
We have been eating in here for years with our young family. Food is consistently good and we love the crinkle cut chips. Fish is always fresh. One gripe this time was the menu changes around kids meals. There is no kids fish and chips. No cod bites. And it really annoyed us. Why? Well, instead, the choice is a frozen fish finger, chicken bites or a sausage. My kids want fish and chips in a chippy. Pay for an adult portion I hear the owners say! No - I want to pay a fair price to feed my kids with a piece of your fresh fish. Instead we paid £14.50 ish for my 7 year old’s meal so she could have fish. Surely there’s a way around it!
TS — Google review
Absolutely blown away by this place—some of the best fish and chips I’ve ever had! The batter was golden, crisp, and full of flavour, but what really sent it over the edge were the battered bits—call them what you want: scraps, scrapings, or crispy heaven—they were next-level, honestly god-like! The portions were generous, the fish was fresh and flaky, and everything was piping hot. Big shoutout to Chris for the brilliant tips on how to dodge the cheeky seagulls—lifesaver! The restaurant is easy to access whether you’re eating in or grabbing takeaway, and the whole experience felt like a proper Whitby highlight. If you’re in Whitby and you’re not stopping here, you’re missing out. No joke—this is THE chip shop to visit. I’ll 100% be back, and I’ll be dreaming of those battered bits until then. Highly recommended!

The home of the crinkle cut chips and they were delicious ! Had a piece of haddock cooked while I waited and it was perfect. No grease, tasty batter and lovely thick white fish. Their mushy peas are the best in Whitby.

The restaurant has received numerous glowing reviews and even earned a TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Award. Established in 1937, it holds significance as part of Whitby's heritage. The chic en suite double and triple rooms above the restaurant provide a convenient accommodation option for visitors.
Lovely friendly staff. Good sized portions, these were the small portions. Nice crispy batter and soft white fish. Chips were nice. Clean inside. A little Hard to get in with a disability pushchair/wheelchair. Food came quickly. Reasonably priced

Visited Hadley Fish and Chip Restaurant on 23 September and again on 26 September whilst on holiday in the area. On each ocassion we received a warm and friendly greeting. We were shown to a clean table promptly. The 4 of us ordered The Special which consisted of Cod, Chips, Peas, Bread and Butter plus a pot of tea. It was evident that all were cooked fresh, served hot, in a timely manner, cooked to perfection and tasted delicious. The price was excellent £20.85 each for a regular portion. Smaller portions were also available. There was no after taste and our meal was not greasy at all. We would definately recomend and return. Many Thanks.
Anne D — Google review
First time trying here after it being recommended by numerous people. The service was attentive and super friendly. The portions wern’t as large as we’re used to in West Yorkshire (we’re big fans of Murgatroyds whale like fish in Yeadon) and no option for skin off on haddock so we all opted for cod which was fresh & succulent. They use vegetable oil when frying which isn’t as flavoursome as beef dripping IMO and the curry sauce & mushy pea’s were a little bland. But the fish, chips, peas & bread/cup of tea deal for under £25 is a bargain and a steal compared to other Whitby chippies.
Jordan L — Google review
Visited Whitby today and stopped in here for lunch before tackling the 199 steps up to Whitby Abbey. One of the best Fish & Chip restaurants we’ve been to. Had to queue at the door for a few minutes until a table was ready but arranged quickly and friendly welcome to our table. Food arrived before drinks and one order was missing mushy peas which we realised after leaving but didn’t spoil a great meal.
James M — Google review
We walked into Hadley's and was immediately shown to a table. We ordered the fish and chips for two and my daughter, who is vegan had a side salad and some of our chips, which she loved! The best fish and chips we've had for ages, truly delicious, we emptied our plates. The staff were very helpful and friendly too ❤️

Our favourite place anywhere in the UK to go for fish and chips. Every time we have been to Whitby we go here for food. Whether it is just the two of us or all the family. The staff are friendly and very accommodating, would recommend this place to anyone.

The Fisherman's Wife Whitby is a charming restaurant located on Khyber Pass, offering stunning views of Whitby Beach and the North Sea. The menu features responsibly sourced, locally-sourced ingredients, including cod, haddock, or Whitby scampi and chips. Diners can also enjoy a fancy touch by opting for buttered samphire instead of mushy peas. The restaurant prides itself on combining the finest seafood from Yorkshire's waters with produce from local fields.
An amazing dining experience. We haven't been to Whitby in 16 years and ate here previously, the revisit was even better. The cod and chips and fish cakes as well as the local ale in a great setting on the coast made it an amazing dining experience.
Mark C — Google review
My favourites amongst the dishes we ordered are the fish pie and fish cakes. They were absolutely delicious. I personally find the lobster slightly overcooked but it’s fresh and tasty. The restaurant has a very nice view looking out the sea. If you want a window seat I would recommend booking for earlier lunch or dinner which we did. Price wise, I think it is pricier than another establishment we dined at
Sok H — Google review
Loved the food and the spectacular views, especially at sunset. Great service. Nice selection of desserts too. Would definitely come back.
NMB T — Google review
Although the restaurant has lovely views of the sea, the food itself is unfortunately extremely overpriced for both the quality and portions. The cod didn’t include sides despite the high price and the scampi and scallops were both tiny portions and very overcooked. Additionally, the bathrooms very very cramped and very dirty which was disappointing. Overall, although the views and staff were nice the food was a major disappointment.

Abbey Wharf is a popular bi-level eatery located in Whitby, offering a versatile dining and entertainment experience for all occasions. The restaurant boasts a relaxed and welcoming ambiance with a diverse crowd, including families, friends, couples, and even pets. Established in 2015, Abbey Wharf has become one of the most favored harbourside restaurants in Whitby. The menu features an array of dishes such as fresh salads, steak, vegetarian options, seafood, and fish dishes.
We read some mixed reviews about this place before I booked, but we had a good meal and experience. I had the mussels and my husband had the calamari. They had a good amount of meat, fish and vegetarian options. Both our meals were decent. Nice music playing, chilled vibes, the cocktail menu was HUGE and went down a treat. If you’re looking for 5 star Michelin dining, this isn’t the place for you. If you want a nice, chilled eatery by the bay, you’ll enjoy this place. It was one of our favourite meals of our visit.

Great location with a terrace overlooking the harbour. Large and spacious with tables spread out - very comfy. Food was good especially the whitebait which was amazing. My husbands white fish was a little overdone but otherwise would definitely return here.

Abbey Wharf is a wonderfully welcoming spot with incredibly friendly staff who make the visit feel special from the moment you arrive. The views are absolutely stunning—worth the trip alone—and it’s great to see access for all, including wheelchair users. We tried the new Craven cod, and it was awesome—plentiful, satisfying, and beautifully cooked. We also had the salmon, which was epic, and the burgers, which the boys loved. I wouldn’t go so far as to claim it’s the very best fish and chip shop in Whitby, but it’s definitely up there. Highly recommended, especially for that amazing view and thoughtful accessibility.

A great place to dine by the harbour with a lively atmosphere. The food is delicious – the fish pie is especially good and highly recommended. It’s dog-friendly too, which makes it an even better spot to relax and enjoy a meal while taking in the views of Whitby.

* Beautiful Balcony: The venue features an extensive balcony that wraps around the building, offering stunning panoramic views of the Whitby harbour, including the East and West Piers. This seems to be a major highlight for many visitors, who enjoy watching the boats and the general hustle and bustle of the town from this vantage point. Some reviews specifically mention being able to sit on the balcony with a drink or meal and soak in the atmosphere. * Very Spacious: Abbey Wharf is frequently described as a very spacious venue. It has a large restaurant area that can seat over 250 guests, a mezzanine level for larger parties and reservations, and a separate takeaway area. The generous space creates a relaxed atmosphere, accommodating different elements of food, drink, and live music without feeling cramped. The building itself is a Grade II listed building, formerly a covered market and then a factory, which likely contributes to its large, open layout. In addition to the balcony and spaciousness, other positive points from reviews include: * Food: A menu with a strong focus on seafood, as well as meat dishes and vegetarian/gluten-free options. The fish is sourced from local suppliers and the steaks are from a local butcher. * Drinks: A well-stocked bar with over 20 gins, its own beer brewed by Whitby Brewery, and a variety of other drinks. * Atmosphere: A relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere during the day, which becomes livelier in the evenings with live music events. It's also dog-friendly in certain areas. * Views: Beyond the balcony, the restaurant and mezzanine levels also offer great views of the harbour through panoramic windows.

Lively atmosphere, great views. Does the basics on food well. Dog friendly. Staff seem a little over it. Expensive on the drinks and extras. Felt a touch exploited by the cost of drinks really. bar staff had lost the will to live a little… you decide on value, receipt in photo. It’s a reliable and friendly place overall - always busy.

Silver Street Fisheries is a cozy counter-serve eatery located just a short distance from the harbor in Whitby. It has been highly praised by visitors for serving up traditional and delicious fish and chips. The shop offers outdoor seating, making it a great spot to enjoy your meal during the summer months, or you can opt for takeaway and wander around the charming harbor area.
If you want the best Fish & Chips and to feel like a local, then this is the place to go. You could be in a long queue and pay over the odds for F&C along the main seafront areas...but I paid less than £10 for a decent sized Haddock & Chips, where it would have been £12 on the main stretches...and the only wait is because the food is cooked fresh to order!!!

Your budget will find all possible means of escape in Whitby. This place bucks the trend. Found it on a general walk around & explore. Very friendly, great portions and a fraction of the price of anywhere else I've seen. Was told the chips were made using a first fry at lower temperature followed by a high temperature fry so means a crisper, full-flavoured chip. Had large sausage and chips, curry sauce, a pickled eggs with a shandy for around £7. Top quality. Nice benches terrace/patio at the front to sit in whilst I demolished. Destroyed the wooden fork but they didn't bat an eyelid and gave me two replacements. It's hidden away but well worth making the effort to find. So good I returned the following night.

2023 Edit Still the best Fish and Chips in Whitby by a long shot. Every cooked fresh. Reasonable prices. out of the way . Great place. New favourite spot in Whitby 2022 update: by far the best dish and chips in Whitby. Avoid the crowds at the Magpie and go here instead, you will not be disappointed. Freshly cooked, friendly staff, small seating area outside. Definitely recommend

I’m staggered by some of the previous posts I ordered two haddock and one portion of chips and a portion of 4 small fish for our dog 🐶 the fish was thick and meaty you could actually taste the freshness the batter could have done with cooking a little longer has it was soggy in the middle the girl who served us didn’t seem to be listening too much either I would prefer to see the fish being cooked inside the shop didn’t like the open serving hatch enjoyed what we had

I saw a review online saying this was the best fish and chips - I wasn't disappointed! Freshly cooked fish in the crispiest batter and really good chips too! I'd recommend it to anyone 😊

If you want the best fish and chips in Whitby to take away, Silver Street Fisheries simply can't be beaten. Been coming here for about 10 years now and the quality is as good today as when I first discovered this place.

Really good fish and chips. A bit of a walk up the hill from the harbour but definitely worth it. Fish cooked fresh and much cheaper than the other chippies in and around the harbour. There are no tables outside now, I assume due to Covid so there is nowhere to sit but there is a bench down the hill and opposite the church.
Peter B — Google review
Wow. I've eaten a LOT of fish and chips over the years, and after a while you get used to the sweaty, mushy chips and thick, greasy, flavourless batter. Enter Silver Street Fisheries. The cod and chips I had was so fresh, the batter so crisp and flavourful, the fish so plump and clean. I've fallen back and love with fish and chips again, bloody delicious! Oh also, they've got cans of dandelion & burdock in the fridge, cracking!

Nestled beside The Angel pub in Whitby, Angel Fisheries is a beloved family-run chip shop that has become a staple for both locals and visitors. Known for its delightful ice cream selection, the shop offers an array of flavors that change regularly, making it a perfect treat on warm summer days. While their fish and chips are also popular, with options like haddock and cod available, some diners have noted that the batter could use a bit more flavor.
All the fish and chips shops I have ever tried in Whitby have all been great.so many in a small area they need to be. I decided to go to Angel fisheries.down the side street, glad I did went I in ordered haddock chips and pea, think it’s was £13.50, told me they had cod available, haddock would take 10 minutes, decided to wait glad I did, one of the best fish I have ever had, chips and peas great as well, also liked the atmosphere in there.Great stuff!

Quite possibly the best fish and chips from a chippy I have ever had! The fish was huge. I ordered a regular cod and chips. And you couldn't even see the chips under the fish.. That's how big it was. I struggled to eat it all. I also ordered a childrens meal for £5.25 I think. It was good value for money, came with sausage, chips and a water. Although I'd say the portion was a little bit big for my 5 year old so maybe they have a gap for maybe a smaller portion for the little ones a little less so it reduces waste. I'd definitely come again when I'm in the area. Definitely beaten others in the area that I have had previously. Also had a small sitting area inside which was ideal as the weather wasn't good.

Really nice and fresh fish and chips. We both got small cod and chips which was plenty big enough. Gravy was lovely. Got it to takeaway but there are a few tables inside to sit in. Whilst not a massive issue when we was there, it is very small inside if you are waiting to take out - and not a lot of standing room

Lovely "small" cod & chips, very tasty! You can even have some of those extra crispy bits sprinkled over your food! Yum! 😋 Friendly, welcoming staff. Nice atmosphere. Highly recommended 👍

Went to visit Whitby a couple of days ago. The streets were overflowing so had no hope of easily finding somewhere to eat. We stumbled up on this place and even managed to get a table and place our order without waiting. No idea if there are better places in Whitby, but we found the food lovely and fresh. My young son is a fussy eater and he said the fish and chips was next level. I'm not a huge fish lover, but tried some battered cod that my wife ordered and it was melt in the mouth tender. The chips were lovely too. Slightly crispy on the outside and soft inside.

Three of us went here for a traditional fish and chips experience whilst we were touring Whitby and it was a pleasant one. ✔️ Reasonably priced fish and chips (around £9 per cod and chips portion). We found most of the other places around Whitby bay sells fish and chips for a rip-off price (e.g. £17-£21 per cod and chips portions for dine in) and some had a massive queue to enter. ✔️A nice selection of menu including calamari, whitebait, sausages, sauses, gravy & etc. ✔️Friendly, welcoming staff. ✔️Decent seating space (probably around 20-25 people can sit in) and dining area. ⚠️️We expected the taste to be special, given the fact it was in Whitby. This is traditional fish and chips and the taste could be improved. However, it was a decent portion of fish and chips :) Thank you very much.

On a chilly Monday lunchtime in January, this was one of the only places open to eat in Whitby, so we stopped by for a quick bite. The lovely lady behind the counter was friendly and served us immediately. We sat in and were charged no different if we had taken the food out, which was very reasonable. I had a chip butty, small battered sausage and scraps, which cost less than £5 so great value. The batter was tasteless and needed salt and vinegar, but the chips were nice, and the sausage was OK.

9.2. Outstanding. Confidently best Chips I’ve ever had. Consistent, cooked to perfection. Every chip crispy outside with warm soft interior. Fresh tasting Haddock also very good, consistent crispy batter and nice thick fillet. No bones no skin. Friendly staff.

We stopped by for lunch because one of our friend recommendation. Good customer service from the start to your table then things start to push you for order your food without giving you time to decide what you like to choose. The food was good in taste and quality. The prices lil high but food quality and atmosphere make it right. Anyhow whatever i like to say i enjoyed my time and food there and happily recommend too.

We stopped at this lovely place for fish and chips after a day at the sea. They had room for us even on a busy Saturday night and food was lovely. Reasonably priced (for Whitby) we had the Yorkshire deal which included a glass of wine / beer. The atmosphere of the restaurant was lovely.

This place is fantastic, great gluten free menu. My partner and I both had gluten free fish and chips. It was that delicious we returned the next day for dinner again. Prices are reasonable and portions are great. Service was brilliant, staff were very friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this establishment, for its great food and friendly atmosphere. Would definitely return in the future when visiting Whitby.

As a 30 something year old from Kent I can honestly say these were the best fish and chips I've ever had. Not greasy, perfectly cooked and so much flavour 👌🏻

Food was really nice although value for money wasn't great for the Yorkshire deal. A deal is value for money pot of tea small pot of mushy peas and a slice of bread and a smaller fish for £5 more than the large cod doesn't seem like value to me. My eldest got a large fish and chips and his cod was twice the size a was given. £70+ for a family of 4 and only 2 fish and chips included in that is very steep

Best fish and chips I have eaten in more years than I can remember. Great service, really clean and staff really lovely. Polished off every single bite on this plate and will 100% be returning next time we are in Whitby. Highly recommended. Sat outside with the dog and LOVED the spicy curry sauce and Guinness Zero. 🐶 🍺

This has to be one of the best fish and chips I’ve had!! we ordered the BIG one and barely finished it between 2! 😄 Service and staff were friendly and efficient, it was a very busy summers day and they still brought the food out quickly. Highly recommend if you are in Whitby.

Disappointing. I think these guys shot themselves in the foot with their advertising. We picked based on the "BBC Best takeaway televised" etc signs and "Big Papa Haddock, with a t shirt!" and "buy yourself a Papa's restaurant bear!" merchandise. Reality: We weren't sure they were even open, there were 2 staff members we saw the whole time managing two floors and we had to seek someone out to let us know we could go upstairs and use the restaurant. When I tried to order via their prominent offer of QR code, the website was broken. Went to the bar and the woman seemed a bit confused and uninvested in my order. They didn't have any t shirts, (which we only asked for after seeing so many references to it and seated in the display cabinet by the door-?) so we changed our order. The portions weren't large, nor particularly great: no lemon wedge, a very basic drab salad, we didn't get the number of pieces of scampi advertised, and the ones we did get were overcooked and dark. Additionally, they seemed to be confused about their closing time: google says updated 4 weeks ago at 10pm, the bar woman said "I think we close about 8 or 9?" and finally, when a fellow customer wanted to get some cocktails from the flashy cocktail-dispenser at the bar, they just said "we don't have any cocktails on"... It just seems like these guys are not entirely 'prepared for customers to turn up and want what they advertise'-? ... Our 2.5 plates and 2 drinks cost £42, and honestly, if I could go back I would walk to another one of many options. This was a saturday about 6pm. Wouldn't recommend.

Absolutely perfect fish restaurant, truly deserves all the accolades it has achieved. Rather pricy but I cannot fault the staff, quality and atmosphere. It's really a cut above many similar restaurants and so good we went a second time to see if it was a one-off but no, it was even better on a cold and sunny November lunchtime. The staff are young, enthusiastic and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. Yes it is pricy but sometimes you need to push the boat out and eat the catch freshly prepared in luscious surroundings by people who know their business.

We always tend to use Papa's as they offer a good gluten free fish and chips for my partner. Overall the the food was very nice, warm and arrived rather quickly. I think there were some fairly young/newer members of staff which did not display as much professionalism as the older ones however overall it was a good experience.

Where to start, Scampi came out and was barely warm, chips tasted like they were cooked in burnt oil, half roast chicken ridiculously Dry ! Yes Scampi got changed but was over cooked and hard when it came back out, salad served with the food was not fresh. Last day on holiday and saved last meal for here, what a waste of £50 !! Don't believe the hype about the BBC stuff outside the place !

This was absolutely fantastic meal. We went as a family of 5. My daughter is Coeliac so has to have gluten free and the waitress was completely knowledgeable about what she could have, she decided on chicken and chips. She throughly enjoyed it. My wife and son had the medium cod and chips, the portion was was so large you wouldn't need to get the large. I had fishcake meal which was two large cakes in breadcrumb, I would of preferred it in batter but I enjoyed it. The curry sauce was really nice fruity and enough spice to give you a kick. Overall a lovely meal in lovely surroundings. It was really busy when we went and even though we hadn't booked (will next time) they were really accommodating for us.

Really enjoyed the meal at Papas. Friendly and conversational, staff and really great fish & chips. I had been worried by the haddock-centric menu; but they were happy to serve a "Papas Chip Shop Platter" substituting cod for haddock. The mushy peas and curry sides were really good. Really big portions of fresh, flaky fish... and the cod comes skinned as well as boned. So good! If I'm super-critical I'd say that Magpie chips have the edge, but I don't think the fish or its crispy batter could be bettered. There's a lift up to the restaurant and plenty of space around the tables. I'd be really happy to go back to Papas lots of times in the future, and at the moment, being fairly new in town, we found it quite easy to get a table on a mid-July evening. --- I've been a few times since, and it's never been like the first visit. In the restaurant, the quality is inconsistent, one the chips were mostly hard chippy shavings. One time the batter want properly cooked and parts of the order were missed. They got rid of the spam fritter from the menu. Once I preordered food from the takeaway for opening time, and waited 30 minutes for it to be cooked with barely another person in the shop.

Wonderful experience at probually is the best fish and chip restaurant I've ever been too,the portions are large and this needs to been taken into account when ordering. This charming eatery has a small outdoor seating area, making it an inviting place to dine while exploring the beautiful Whitby coastline. Despite its name, Fish Box also serves other options such as Chicken Fillets, Steak Pies, and Jacket Potatoes.
Called in for lunch today as it was the nearest place to the car park and I have not tried it before. The chips were good. but the fish was one of the best fishes I have ever had. I also thought it was very reasonably priced for the location, about £10 for fish and chips. well worth a visit.

We was very disappointed with this place, as we had been here before about 4 years ago and always recommended it to everyone one to try them out, we came up for the day really looking forward to some decent fish and chips, and what we got was over cooked horrible ends of some kind of fish. Very, very disappointed, no Haddock on. Surely being a weekend you would think they would have been fully stocked

Very poor quality, I believe it can be hit and miss here. Some people seem to enjoy it. But when visiting we got food that was inedible and after a couple of mouthfuls went in the bin. As you can see from the picture there was barely any fish in the over cooked batter and the chips didn’t save it either, no amount of salt and vinegar could save this.

My favourite place to eat when I visit Whitby, the staff are friendly and offer an excellent table service where you do not have long to wait for your meal. A top rated fish restaurant at a very reasonable price for your meal not to be missed.

I visited this fish n chip shop on a cold December day, well out of season. Needless to say it wasn't busy. I had a large cod 'n chips, curry sauce with scraps and two slices of bread. (Of course I made a chip butty, and delicious it was too.) One curry sauce pot could be shared by two easily, the fish was excellent and there was a good portion of nice chips. All in all, very happy with the place. The only negatives are most of the seating is well inside and down some steps, so getting a table with a view would be unlikely, particularly I imagine when its busy. There are lots of tables that seat 4 people. The loos are down in the basement, didn't notice any disabled facilities on the ground floor.

This basic fish and chip restaurant gives good value for money. We were served quickly by young, friendly staff and the food arrived quickly. Meal prices include a drink and bread and butter. Mister Chips by The Beach is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the charming seaside town of Whitby. Established in 1981, this renowned fish and chip shop has earned its place among Britain's top ten seaside eateries, as recognized by The Guardian. Known for its delicious comfort food, Mister Chips offers not only classic fish and chips but also an enticing à la carte menu featuring beautifully presented dishes like seafood chowder and steak casserole.
Great little place with an amazing view of the beach which made for a lovely atmosphere. One of the nicest fish and chips I've had. Really good value for money. Stunning location. I would definitely go here for my fish and chips if I was in Whitby again.

Quite possibly the nicest piece of Cod I've had in forever, Cooked beautifully, and the homemade tartar sauce is to die for. Staff very friendly, and even though it was really busy, they seated us very quickly. Prices about what you would expect from a busy harbour town. Don't think the Chinese family that were sat next to us, fully understood what was what. As one ordered 3 cod on one portion of chips, and another covered her chips in an unhealthy amount of sugar ! I'm guessing she's never seen a British sugar dispenser before. 😆 All in all, would highly recommend.

This place is as good as it always has been. I took my wife and baby here for the first time, and we were welcomes by such wonderful staff. So friendly, making sure there was room for us with the buggy, helping us sort chairs to fit in. They are all very attentive, food came out quickly and it was delicious. I also like that from my seat I could see fresh ingredients being prepared and cooked, unlike a lot of places in Whitby now who use frozen fish… why the need when fresh is literally at the doorstep. I love this place.

These are honestly the best fish and chips I've ever had. The chips were so crispy and delicious. And the guy who served me was extremely polite. He checked repeatedly if he was getting my order correct, and called me "ma'am" in just the sweetest way. They were a bit pricey, but I think in line with the prices in the other fish and chip shops in Whitby. Definitely recommend.

This was our visit to Whitby, and had heard that Mister Chips was well worth a visit if going. They have 2 outlets, the main one is on the Abbey side of the bridge, but we chose this one by the harbour. We decided to eat in the restaurant, rather than get a takeaway due to the weather. The tables were well spaced, and everything looked very clean & tidy. The waitress was very polite and friendly, and in all we only waited about 5-10 minutes for our food to arrive at the table. We'd ordered the large cod & chips, battered sausage & chips, and drinks. Considering the prices were a bit on the high side compared to some of the other places, I was a bit surprised to see it didn't include mushy peas, so had to order those separately. The chips were very nice, not greasy, fluffy inside, but not the best I've had. However, the Cod was absolutely delicious, in lovely golden crispy batter, not at all greasy, and the fish was soft, melt in the mouth, and was large as ordered. The battered sausage was equally well cooked, and quite tasty. Overall, I think the food & service was excellent, so would definitely eat here again. It's a good location too with views of the harbour and abbey, albeit partly obstructed by some funfair rides, and I felt just a bit expensive to be making mushy peas an extra.

Botham's of Whitby, located on Skinner Street, is a historic family-run bakery that has been thriving for five generations. The bakery offers iconic baked treats such as Lemon Buns, Yorkshire Brack, and Chocolate Japonaise Japs. In addition to the Skinner Street shop, Botham's has three other shops and two tearooms in Whitby. They also offer mail order hampers nationwide and supply local businesses while prioritizing local employment and outsourcing work within the community.
A vast array awaits in this Whitby institution. You’re likely to queue but there’s plenty of friendly serving staff making to order filled rolls or the excellent baked goods on offer. I had a pork pie and curd tart. Both were excellent. The curd tart was more curd less fruit than I’ve had elsewhere but equally delicious. My wife had quiche and raved about it. Absolutely worth a visit when visiting the ever popular town of Whitby.

An unfortunate first experience at Botham's Tearooms to celebrate my mother's birthday. We preordered the Botham's afternoon tea via telephone days prior. The afternoon tea that was discussed to us was mistakenly The Yorkshire afternoon tea. This caused slight confusion. Nonetheless we waited, and waited and 40 minutes had passed before we eventually received our order. I was accompanied by my two young boys and as you can imagine they lack any sort of patience. The afternoon tea itself was delicious however we had drank our pot of tea before it had even arrived. There was also a very large queue of elderly customers that wished to be seated. I'd suggest in future that tables are on a prebook basis. I'd like to enjoy my food without feeling pressured or bombarded by the sheer magnitude of customers. Finally, on receipt of our bill I noticed that the prices did not correlate to those on their website menu. We were charged £15.25 per person and not £14.95 as shown on the website. I was told that they would not honor the price stated online. This will need to be updated. To conclude, the Tearooms were not well managed and sadly I will not be returning. It was not the experience we'd hoped to receive.

A very traditional experience! We came here for breakfast and were very impressed with how large the selection of food was. I highly recommend the fruit scones and the hot chocolate, they were delicious! We had a lovely meal and were pleased that it was priced very fairly. The decor was very traditional for tearooms and looks as if not much has changed in the past 50 years! Although this is not to everyone’s taste, our group really enjoyed it! The staff were also lovely and greeted us with a big smile. It was overall, a great experience!

Sweet Perfection! This wonderful tea room has served delicious food to Whitby since 1865. The tea- room has hardly changed since then! Lovely, old worlde atmosphere. A quiet & pleasant place to enjoy the scrumptious cakes and coffee. Immaculately dressed staff, who were so polite & friendly. Our coffees & cakes were out of this world! Fresh, tasty, and incredibly priced for a such high quality product. If Botham's was in London, I would move in!!! Do not miss this wonderful tea room!

We've walked past this tea room a few times, not knowing what a lovely place it was, as we only saw it as a bakery shop. You have to go upstairs to access the tea room (there's a stair lift too for anyone not able to get up them), and once up there, it's quite worthwhile. As we'd already had lunch earlier, we had tea & cake. Very nicely decorated & plenty of space between the tables. Good selection of speciality teas, coffees & cakes.

Didn't stay in rooms. Had a beautiful meal there last night. Staff very friendly and welcoming, nothing seemed to much. We had a variety of dishes, starters all went down well. Offered a table near the toilets in a fairly empty restaurant so I then asked for a window seat ,which were kindly given however the table was extremely sticky ,peeling glasses and menus off the table. Staff took ages to serve ..so we left without food and found another restaurant. Clean your tables please and I got the impression the window seat tables were not often used ...just for decor ??? Sorry bad service and bad table given initially.

Beautiful meal in the restaurant last night, all 4 of our party had different meals and each one was very good. Compliments also to the restaurant team who very kindly gave a homeless chap a free coffee and a pizza, who popped his head in asking for a little charity. Very well done it would have been easier to turn him away but they "fed and watered" him. A very nice kind gesture 👍
CHRIS S — Google review
Went in thinking it was a fish and chip restaurant as most of the signage outside suggests so. When we got inside we learned it was more of a Turkish restaurant with other options? Also the prices/items don't match the signs outside. Menus stuck to table as they were sticky. Didn't get served after 15 minutes (not even drinks orders) despite other tables that came in after us being served...given we felt invisible, we just left and went elsewhere. Seemed to be a pattern as the guy next to us asked for the bill and didn't get it for at least 10 minutes.

Mediterranean pizza missing basil and frah mozzarella, more like a simple cheese pizza. I would say average for UK and kids will eat it. Fish was good. Chicken parmesan doesnt have tomato sauce and is just melted cheese on a chicken cutlet - my fault for not reading the menu description. I didn't really think it goes well without sauce. Service was spotty, one server was okay but another was MIA most of our meal. Hard to get water and drinks. Grills looked good and wish I had tried them instead.

We came here for a meal and it was delicious, my partner said his Steak Burger was the best in whitby, even let our little Chihuahua in which was lovely, The Staff were so nice and friendly, especially the lady who was working, we've booked a table again for to night as we go home Monday morning, Totally recommend this place 👌

Nestled on the charming cobbled Church Street in Whitby, Monks Haven is a delightful dog-friendly café that captures the essence of Yorkshire's culinary scene. Known for its warm atmosphere and friendly staff, this popular spot serves up an array of delicious dishes, including their famous grilled kippers paired with perfectly scrambled eggs and toast. Whether you're indulging in a hearty breakfast or savoring fluffy cakes between adventures, Monks Haven offers something for everyone.
First time visit to Monks Haven and won’t be the last. It was very busy but we managed to get a table straight away for breakfast. They allow dogs too which a massive bonus, not only that they have us a small plate of sausages for the dogs, which I just think is absolutely lovely. My husband ordered the large breakfast which came with every item you’d expect and was cooked to perfection. I had a tea cake which was delicious too. The staff were very friendly and very attentive. Definitely recommend a visit :)
Kylie S — Google review
Had a lovely lunch here. Very welcoming and dog friendly. Whilst taking our order the young lady asked us if we'd like some sausage for our dog. That's so lovely! We ordered cheese and onion quiche and southern fried chicken strips on ciabatta with a bowl of chips. Both meals were delicious. There's a toilet upstairs that's a shared one. Very polite staff and they wished us a nice day when we left!
Dawn D — Google review
One of the few places which offer more than a cup of tea or coffee and bakery in the morning, so, this was a pleasure and a bit of luck to get a table without a reservation, though the places are limited. Full English breakfast was good, we could easily share it fir 2 of us, plus they offer a sausage for a dog, which was nice. Tea furring the day was good, too, however, we wanted to have tea only during their lunch time and were not sorted inside as we were told “lunch only served inside”, and though we made it clear we are outside no one came to make the order until I came in and placed my order. The tea and a cake were good, though. Toilets are accessible on the top floor but only through a staircase; yet it is quite big and comfortable. The location is really nice and the place is quite popular.

Sat outside and had a lovely cup of tea and a huge slice of cake. Doggie sausage for the pooch which was nice. Great service and reasonable prices.

Sent the first Breakfast back because it had a hair in it, the second had a bloody flag in it... While we were sat outside eating the metal flag attached to the building fell on our table in top of the food 😂😂 can't mate it up, the lady offered to make a new breakfast but that would of been the first one 😂🤷‍♀️ no refund offered and she said it's never happened before yet the flag was taped on, when we showed her the tape she then changed the story to the whole thing has been broke for a while 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ Can't make It up, good job we were in a good mood. Food is delicious and I'd still return 👍🏻

Had a lovely meal of Whitby scampi and fish and chips. A very busy cafe and great staff. Very quick at serving and friendly. Would recommend. Located in the old part of Whitby and very reasonably priced.

I came all the way up from Suffolk to Whitby on holiday, stumbled across this cafe and the food was absolutely amazing. The staff wiped our table as soon as we sat down and we were served very quickly. I had the summer pork pie and it was the best pork pie I have ever had. If I am ever up in Whitby again I will definitely be coming here. 10/10 all round

Very mediocre. Sausage sandwich was poor. Tea was good and staff were good. Not terrible but wouldn't visit again. Microwaved cheese scone was soggy.

The Endeavour is a charming and cozy pub located in Whitby, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere for visitors and their furry companions. With picturesque views of the River Esk, this dog-friendly haunt provides a great selection of cask and craft ales as well as an impressive gin list with over 25 varieties to choose from.
Dropped in for a pint after wandering around town, great pub with nice variety of beers and spirits. Saw the seafood platter on the menu which the landlord then order in for us fresh for the next day. Absolutely delicious food. Really friendly staff. Enjoyed the atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.

We have just stayed in the endeavor for three days. The people are lovely. Chris and Tom the bar men and the girl are brilliant very friendly people. Adam and the manageress were very friendly and helpful with where to go for breakfast. The atmosphere was brilliant in the pub all thr time. People were singing and dancing as soon as we walked in. Rooms were lovely with a nice view. Would definitely stay again

Gorgeous pub inside and out. Greeted by extremely friendly bar staff , the Aspalls cider was excellent .We ordered the cheese board and a pork pie and both were stunning, huge portions of cheese and a mountain of crackers. We polished them off though. Loved the music playlist too. Fantastic place, great atmosphere. Second day in here, fantastic they allow you to bring your own fish n chips in. Seems most of Chesterfield was in today 😁 Thank you, see you again soon.

We had a brilliant stay here in August 2025 and upon arrival were made to feel really welcome by the gent who checked us in. Our room had a great sea view and was immaculate. There was tea/coffee/kettle and we loved the fact that if we needed any more of the items provided, there was the ability to help yourself to more from the extra items placed in the corridors. We came back from a day of exploring to find live music playing and the atmosphere was fantastic, it was a great way to end our day! We will definitely be booking here again, great all round! Thanks very much!!

A truly unforgettable stay! Endeavour Whitney is a hidden gem that has completely captured our hearts. From the moment we arrived, we were enchanted by the seamless blend of comfort, style, and hospitality. The location is absolutely perfect, offering a tranquil retreat with easy access to all the charm and excitement of the town. The accommodation itself is nothing short of exceptional. The rooms are immaculate, a testament to the meticulous care and attention to detail that is evident everywhere. We were struck by how well-equipped everything was, truly feeling like a home away from home. The beds are wonderfully comfortable, providing a perfect night's sleep after a day of exploring. And for those traveling with a furry friend, the dog-friendly policy is a huge bonus that makes the entire experience so much more enjoyable. The value for money here is incredible, offering a luxury experience without the hefty price tag. But what truly sets Endeavour Whitney apart is the genuine warmth of the staff. They are welcoming, friendly, and always ready to help, making us feel like valued guests from start to finish. In every sense, our time here was an endeavor worth making. We are already planning our return and cannot recommend this place highly enough. It's a perfect 10/10 and a must-visit for anyone looking for a truly special and memorable getaway.
Marc S — Google review
A classic family friendly pub located in a beautiful coastal town city, The Endeavour did not disappoint from the moment we walked in, polite and attentive bar staff greeted us with a smile (amazing pink hair by the way) gave us a run down thay while they had cheese boards and pub snacks on offer, they do allow you to bring in food from the local chippy, (which we did) the only provision is that you (understandably) take your rubbish with you. They even have cutlery and sauces on hand. The prices are more than reasonable, especially given busy the place gets. The pub itself holds a traditional pub/inn vibe with plenty of seating and beautifully decorated with a very local theme, that takes great pride in showing the history of the pub and it's place in Whitby! Upon our next visit to Whitby, we plan on booking a room at the Endeavour so we can experience the city and night life a little bit more! An absolute must visit!

Such friendly, welcoming staff. Lovely, clean room. Open fire, live music and welcoming to our elderly dog. Beverages and snacks in the room was so nice. And right in the heart if Whitby. Couldn't have asked for more. Will definitely be going back x

Wedding venue
Hetty and Betty is a historic cafe and restaurant located in Whitby, operating since 1928. Originally known as Mills Cafe, it was taken over by the current owners in 2018 and renamed after their daughter and niece. This dog-friendly establishment offers a traditional menu with a focus on fish and chips, which has been a favorite for almost a century.
Whilst visiting family we ate lunch at this wonderful establishment. Choosing the medium fish and chips we were pleasantly surprised when we received a fish that we would describe as large! Delicious food, very generous portions. The senior special is also generously portioned. Highly recommend for quality and value for money

If you go to Whitby , please pop into Hetty and Betty's what a wonderful place to go and eat . The menu is great , the food is amazing and the atmosphere in there is lovely . The staff are incredible and helpful. We went for breakfast and it was lovely really tasty and hot and big . The prices are very reasonable and I would have loved to have gone back for the fish and chip afternoon tea . Check their website for the full menu and times of opening, but believe me the food and the atmosphere are second to none the last photo of the afternoon fish tea is not mine but I thought it would show people how good the food is

I really wanted to try the fish and chip afternoon tea, so you have to buy a voucher for this, £45 for 2 people, and then book via email. We booked the last slot of the day which was 2pm, arrived 5 minutes early and was seated straight away. Lovely young lady served us, very polite and bubbly. Food took around 20 minutes to be served, and was really well presented. It was piping hot and tasted delicious, I even ate the mushy peas! 😆 We were asked if we wanted to take the scones home but we managed to finish the lot :-) Would recommend, but definitely pre book.
Emma B — Google review
I was given a voucher for the fish and chips afternoon tea as a birthday present, and we really enjoyed it! The fish was perfectly cooked and the chips were properly traditional, just like my nannan used to make. The choice of drinks was great - my green tea was really tasty. And the scones were wonderfully fresh and fluffy, a perfect end to the meal. We received a very warm welcome, and the staff were all friendly and helpful. I'd highly recommend Hetty and Betty. We had a lovely time and will be going back!

I had the pleasure of enjoying my lunch at Hetty and Bettys on Thursday. We were a large’ish group arriving 15 minutes early - with an extra person than expected, but we were all warmly welcomed and served quickly. The flakiest of fish in lovely, crispy batter, and the best chips I’ve had in a long time. Thank you.
Rachel V — Google review
Hetty & Betty is set away from the main promenade so there is a significantly less of a queue. I waited until after the lunch rush and got served quickly. Honestly, couldn't finish it, but it was lovely. If I am going to criticise I asked for HP sauce and was given off-brand brown sauce with the label taken off, couldn't help but notice. Accept no imitation.

Fantastic food. My wife had the Hetty and Betty "High Tea" on a three tiered cake stand: Bottom layer: Fish and Chips Next layer: Bread and butter, Mushy Peas and condiments (including tartare sauce); Top layer: Scone with clotted cream and jam. My meal: Regular size fish and chips. I asked, "If THAT'S a regular, imagine if they did a Large!" Put it this way, a normal appetite would be ok with the small! The cod fish melted in the mouth, and tasted very fresh. The 'fish' wasn't just a lot of batter either. In fact, the batter was light, non-greasy and was lovely. The chips were not a chippy size portion, but that was ok with me, as I prefer a large portion of fish in proportion to my chips. The chips themselves, were light and fluffy and crispy. My wife and I agreed, our fish and chips meal was one of the best ever, and were certainly "a bit posh," which is what you expect. The staff were warm, lovely; let us sit where we wanted; attentive but not 'in your face'. Was service and atmosphere good? Exceptional; Was the food good? Exceptional; Would we go again? You bet.

Russells Traditional Fish & Chips is a great place to get some tasty fish and chips. It's located right by the harbour and has friendly staff who are happy to help. The portions are big, and the prices are reasonable.
Spot on ! ... over the years we have tried many of the chippys in Whitby.. however.. we now only use Russell's as default.. they are very proud of their shop and constantly cleaning as customers leave... there are no others to touch them in our opinion.. See you next year Russell's... Dave and Jill 😊
Dave C — Google review
The dining area and toilet is very clean and welcoming. It's just a shame that the food provided was of such a low standard. The chip portion was abysmal for £2.40, and their condiments are not easily distinguishable. The chips themselves were average tasting, and weren't anything special. The staff was nothing but miserable and customer service was non existing. No cutlery and if you want to use a knife and fork you've got to pay. Will not be coming back.
Calextone — Google review
BEST CURRY SAUCE EVER!!! We honestly really enjoyed the experience of eating from Russell's. Glad we chose this place for our fish and chips at Whitby. Really friendly staff, all-round enjoyable experience. My boyfriend said the fish is really good. They even let you put your own salt and vinegar on.

This is by far the best fish and chips shop in Whitby and doesn't cost a fortune either. We came to. Whitby for a week and ate here every day. A Guinness and chippy holiday which was amazing. Would definitely recommend to eat here. Staff were great to, extremely friendly
Nancie G — Google review
I’ve been to a lot of bad fish and chip shops in my time - I’m sad to say that this is one of them. The fish is mushy and the batter tastes like oil, not to mention it is served still soaking in oil. The chips are passable at best, and even then my friend ordered a portion of just chips only to receive an amount that wouldn’t fill a packet of wotsits. The mushy peas are extremely bland and watery, not to mention having barely any colour. I came to this fish and chip shop hungry and I left hungry. On top of all this, if you’re opting for a dine-in experience, you’re offered no plate for your food, and the same wooden forks offered to those who opt to takeaway, there is also no cutlery present on the tables. Extremely disappointed.
Joseph D — Google review
My experience at this establishment was atrocious. Whenever I go to whitby I try to go to a different chippy each time to find my new favorite and I call tell you this chippy is easily my least favourite, mostly due to the service but that doesn't mean that the food was it's saving grace at all. Upon entering the chippy (which is not called Russell's, it is now Angels) I was met with the most unwelcoming and miserable woman ive has the mispleasure of being served by. I asked for my group of 5 if we were OK to sit in as it was in the evening and didn't know if they were due to shut soon. Although she confirmed it was ok the chew was not appropriate or called for, upon me and my friends ordering our food we were spoken to with attitude and I was ignored when asked for tarte sauce. Upon collection my food was under someone else's name? And I wasn't offered scraps like you usually would expect? Thankfully this was my last experience with any of the staff. The food portions were fair, I got a cod and chips with gravy which tasted ok, not much flavour in either area, the fish was supposed to be the star of the show but despite efforts with cooking to order the fish was still super soggy and mushy, pretty flavourless unless you add salt and vinegar. The chips were cooked nicely but still lacked a lot- I don't even want to comment on the gravy. Overall, I will not be returning and there is room for major improvement with this restaurant.

We went to The Tiffin on a dreary wet January weekend, totally washed out, and were impressed with the service. The food is cooked to order so it was very hot, and the bacon was lightly done as I'd asked. I hope business picks up for the place as they seem a friendly bunch & the food was excellent. Reasonably priced too.

The Beach Shack is a hidden gem that’s definitely worth the trek! Nestled by the beach, it offers an impressive selection of fish and chips that are both delicious and reasonably priced. Despite the bustling atmosphere on weekends, with long queues at nearby eateries, we were fortunate to snag a cozy 'cabin with a view.' The cheerful staff promptly served us generous portions cooked to order.
Fantastic food. I had the scampi and my wife tandoori Sea Bass both really enjoyed it and service was great. You pay when you order which wasn't a problem, and yes like other venues a service charge added but can be removed from bill if you wish. Views brilliant and would certainly go back.
Allan B — Google review
Automatically add a tip to the bill claiming that most customers want this?! Absolute rubbish. It's a devious way to make more money off customers. Staff rushed through the payment without asking if you wanted to pay it. And they took payment before they served you anything so who would tip before you get any service?! As it happens the service was slow and only one staff member could muster even a smile, the others moody. The coffee was ok, nothing special. Good views are the main highlight. Only one toilet for the whole premises and even though it was very quiet on our visit, still had a lengthy queue. I wouldn't want to come on a busy evening with alcohol!
Daniel M — Google review
Friendly staff, nice cocktails but fairly expensive, we must have spent at least £100 on our two visits just on drinks! Note: they automatically add a 5% tip to your bill, which isn't good, but you can ask not to have this. Also there is only one toilet on the premises which is for both males and females, so not nice and causes a queue through the bar.
Natalie S — Google review
I read Gareth Jones review and took his advice, and glad I did. Food excellent, service excellent, loved the interior decor and you could sit outside in a shack if you chose to. Dogs are allowed inside and they did make a fuss of ours. The girl behind the counter worked non stop.

Not really sure why I was charged £8.92 for drinks that sound have cost £8.50 ( 2 x cans @£2.50 and a cappuccino at £3.50). No wonder the waitress wouldn’t let me see the card machine!

Worth The Journey! Yes, you will have to walk past many fish and chip emporiums, but wait! Keep walking, and right by the beach you will find the Fishermans Shack selling fantastic quality fish and chips at unbeatable prices. We were there on a Saturday, a group of 6, and the town was rammed, with queues everywhere. But we bagged a 'cabin with a view' and were promptly served by cheerful staff. The meals were cooked to order, and generously sized. Nothing more to add. Go there! Its worth it!

Standout offerings include Salt & Pepper Squid, Pan-Seared Hake Fillet, Thai Vegetable Red Curry, and their renowned Fish & Chips.

We had the mussels which was terrific- sauce was good and mussels not overcooked. Haddock Fish n chips was beautifully fried - fish was fresh and cooked to perfection- fish proportionate to the crunchy batter which was not oily. Not a huge menu but choices were good Fish pie was good as far as fish pies go- maybe a bit to much mash potatoes. Service was friendly and attentive. They even gave us a complimentary dessert with a lit candle for our birthday girl in the group Our meal deal was a great deal

Marta H — Google review
Thoroughly underwhelmed. Related to the other store which boasts award winning fish and chips, I had hoped for something special. I ordered cod and chips. The batter was excellent… crisp, and light, but there's a clue in the name… it's FISH and chips, not batter and chips. The fish inside the batter was utterly limp and tasteless. Can't say for certain, but I suspect it had been frozen… that's the only sure fire way I know of turning good fish into a tasteless mush. The chips were adequate. Not crisp, a bit tough, and unappealing. The peas were, I'm fairly sure, scooped from a tin. How can a restaurant serve that? My partner ordered the fish pie, and can confirm what others have said. It's a potato pie in the form of a treasure hunt for pieces of fish. Unbalanced, and not very good. Fish is expensive, and potatoes are cheap. All you need to know.
Andrew H — Google review
What a find this place was. We had oysters and calamari for starters. The spiced sauce on the calamari was fantastic. The menu supplied a great choice but we went for haddock and chips. The fish was perfectly cooked... white and flakes. The batter was tasty and all the usual accompaniments were there. Will definitely come here again.
Andrew S — Google review
We bought 3 kids fish bites and chips . The.fish was delicious. Fried perfectly in beef fat. The chips were proper. Generous portions. With a side of curry sauce. Fed a family of four. Great value for money. Highly recommend.

The service was great - prompt, friendly, and very accommodating. We asked for a couple of small things "off menu", such as a portion of olives, and this was not a problem. The food was well prepared, and delicious. We tried a few restaurants during our stay in Whitby and Tide was, in our collective opinion, better than some of its better known neighbours. Well worth a visit.

The charming first-floor venue known as the Ballroom has become an iconic spot not just for ice cream but also for enjoying classic fish and chips.
If you visit Whitby, you need to have a Trillo's Ice Cream! Heavenly treat
Adam C — Google review
Was a bit disappointed with my trip to Trillo's. My appetite was up for an ice cream, and it was a wonderfully warm day in Whitby. Arriving at the ice cream shop there was an excellently socially distanced queue, which took around 10 minutes to order. My appetite was growing and I was excited for a Mr Whippy and a flake. Unfortunately, however the mister whippy machine was broken so an alternative scooped ice cream was the only option. I chose the rum and raisin on a cone. This looked like quite a luxury brand and I was expecting something quite nice for almost £3. It was nice to have something cold in my mouth on such a warm day, but unfortunately the ice cream had some crystalline solid parts in it, rather than being completely smooth. I think this ice cream had melted and then been frozen for a second time before sale. Keep your eyes open here folk's!
