Southern restaurant (US)
Restaurant
Bubba, a relatively new establishment in Des Moines, has quickly become a local favorite known for its relaxed and stylish setting with a patio. The restaurant offers a unique blend of Southern classics and an extensive selection of whiskies. Its swanky yet cozy atmosphere and magazine-worthy decor make it an instant downtown classic on 10th Street.
Came here for my child's undergrad graduation celebration! She made a great pick! The food was great! Service was awesome. We even had an episode with one of the toilets while there and the manager made sure everything was right! Watch out for that first stall 🤣

We arrived at opening time, for a weekday lunch. We ordered the fried green tomatoes, frog legs for appetizers, & the mac&cheese (a sharable dish, for sure! So rich & filling!!) with shrimp & bacon, & chicken fried steak for our entrees. We shared a peanut butter chocolate pie for dessert. Our waitress was very kind & professional. Our food was well presented & HOT when it arrived at the table. Veggie garnished were fresh & crisp. A delightful meal, celebrating a wonderful day.

In town to visit with family, our last night in town we selected Bubba's. This was the first time for all of us to eat at this restaurant. This restaurant strikes the perfect balance between sophistication and comfort. With its upscale aesthetic and warm, down-home atmosphere, it feels both refined and welcoming. The space spans two floors: the first features a cozy mix of bar seating and a handful of tables, while the second floor opens up to the main dining area, complete with long wall booths and a variety of table arrangements that invite relaxed gatherings and intimate meals alike. Our server was wonderful, checking the table often to refill drink orders between the appetizer and main meals. She also was helpful with dish options to match tastebud interests. The food was okay, a bit more seasoning would have made it really good. The exception is the Cajun Chicken & Sausage Gumbo was excellent! The roux was savory and on point - rich, velvety and layered with flavor. And the Mac & Cheese Bite appetizer was cheesy and lightly fried to perfection with jalapeno cheese sauce. A good place to enjoy a relaxing place with good service and food.

Bubba's is great, we got the gumbo, jambalaya, fries, and bananas foster and sweet tea. Everything was excellent. The gumbo and jambalaya were seasoned perfectly and so flavorful. The fries were also nicely seasoned and were cooked to be crispy on the outside while still being slightly soft inside. The sweet tea was less sweet than lots of other sweet teas we've tried (this is a good thing), as it lets the flavor of the tea come through, while still being sweet enough. The bananas foster was also amazing, our only complaint about it was that it could do with a bit more banana. The restaurant is in a nice old building, and the downstairs seating area really gives off that classic old feeling. Unfortunately upstairs doesn't share the same decor, making the upstairs feel much more like 'generic restaurant', but this doesn't take anything away from the food. The service is also excellent.

Pleasantly uncrowded on a Sunday morning. Josh was super nice. Latte Cocktail was tasty, albeit a tad small. Wife liked her Bloody Mary. I enjoyed the Crab Benedict and the wife liked her skillet plate. Nice bourbon list! Would return to explore more of that menu!

We went to this place to celebrate my daughter wedding. And I'm on a soft food diet do to surgery. And i asked the server if the cook can pureed my food because that how I have to eat for now. And I was so please that they did. And everyone at the table enjoyed there meal.

Came here for my birthday lunch on a Saturday afternoon visiting Des Moines. There wasn't many other tables taken at that time so it was quiet and laid back. I love shrimp and grits. Between that being on the menu and the great reviews, I decided on Bubba's. I really liked the ambiance and vibe upon entering. Our waiter, Jordan, was fantastic. Very attentive, considerate and nice. I wish we had Jordan every time we went out somewhere. The shrimp and grits were fantastic. The onions, green/red peppers really added nice flavor to the dish. It was very filling and tasty. I was offered a free dessert for my birthday and Jordan even brought out a candle, which made it more special. Highly recommend going here!

Step into The High Life Lounge, a quirky tribute to 1960s Midwestern beer halls serving up classic comfort food. This retro spot offers a nostalgic ambiance with decor reminiscent of the golden era. Indulge in their signature broasted chicken and unique bites like bacon-wrapped tater tots topped with cheese. Pair your meal with the iconic Miller beer for an authentic experience.
10/10 no notes Great food, great prices, great service and perfect ambiance. Cheeseburger? Solid. Meatloaf? Solid. Sandwiches? Solid. Loved it, has the best Midwest dive bar vibe that I’ve found in Des Moines and could see myself becoming a regular here.
Audrey K — Google review
Great tasting and affordable food in a friendly and inviting environment. Our appetites were satisfied. If you’re in the area, would highly recommend this place for your family to grab a bite to eat. There is both indoor and outdoor seating.
Prized T — Google review
I had to make this stop—liver and onions are one of my all-time favorites. The bonus? This place has a nostalgic, old-school ’60s Miller-themed bar vibe that’s just plain cool. I was greeted right away and grabbed a booth, perfect for people-watching while I decided on my order. I asked my waitress for heavy onions (the more the better), plus a side salad and broccoli. Let me tell you—they did not skimp on those onions, as you can see in the photo. The liver and onions were fantastic—so good that I’m planning to come back again before I leave this weekend. I even tipped the cook an extra $10 just for being generous with the onions. This is the kind of spot you’ve got to check out, not just for the food, but for the experience.

This place reminded me of the bars in Wisconsin growing up. The only thing that was missing was soming stuffed on the walls. Service was very friendly and food came out fast. Had the deviled eggs and poutine. Every part of it was delicious. If I'm back in the area, I'll be going back here for something again.
Drew R — Google review
I was here 15+years ago and still has the same vibe (minus the shag carpet). I don’t recall eating here back then but had the bacon cheese burger and fries and it did not disappoint. Friendly staff to a out of towner.
David T — Google review
Walking into High Life Lounge feels like stepping back a few decades in the best possible way. Wood-paneled walls, vintage beer signs, and that cozy “neighborhood bar” charm make the atmosphere a solid 5/5. Service was excellent. My waitress, Mercedes R., was on point the whole time — friendly, quick, and kept things smooth. She had that perfect mix of charm and elegance, the kind of presence that shows just enough to keep it classy and plenty to keep it memorable. Easy 5/5 there. For food, I started with the Chili Cheese Fries appetizer. They came out hot and hearty, loaded with cheese and chili over crinkle fries. They were tasty, no doubt, but the chili had that familiar mom-and-pop diner style. Good comfort food, but nothing that set it apart — I’d rate them around 3.5/5. The Chicken Pot Pie was my main course. It arrived covered in a pool of brown gravy, which was flavorful but not as rich as I hoped. I’d been looking forward to cracking into a crisp, golden crust, only to find it softened under the gravy. The crust itself was thick and layered, the chicken came in cubes (hard to say if it was fresh-made or not), and the veggies were just shy of fully cooked — not mushy, but with a good bite. In the end, it was filling and hearty, but the presentation and flavor didn’t quite deliver the wow factor. 3.5/5. The bar deserves some credit — plenty of beers on tap, kept cold and flowing. A nice spread without overcomplicating it. That’s a 4/5. What really made the place feel like home, though, was a nearby table of old friends swapping stories from the 70s. Those old goats set the bar high for an up-and-coming Billy goat like me, and it added a sense of warmth and nostalgia that money can’t buy. Final bill was $26.19 with tip, which felt fair for drinks, an appetizer, and a main course. Bottom line: Come here for the retro atmosphere, cold beer, and excellent service. The food hits the classic comfort note, but it’s the vibe — and people like Mercedes — that make the High Life Lounge worth the stop.
Steve — Google review
Couldn’t get much better! The broasted chicken is the best in the area. Tenderloin was awesome too. The old dive bar feel was something we love. The server was the best part!
Beave B — Google review
Terrible service!!!! Enjoying time with adult friends at 4pm, laughing, and and drinking. The bartender looks like a tweeter himself. Was super disrespectful and short. Complaining of people being loud when it wasn’t. They were rude and disrespectful and dismissed. We left and didn’t continue business because of the unwelcoming atmosphere.

Restaurant
At Basic Bird, the culinary adventure begins with their extraordinary take on wings, crafted by the talented Joe Tripp of Harbinger fame. Nestled in Beaverdale, this fast-casual eatery is a haven for Korean fried chicken lovers. The wings are enveloped in a delightfully crispy batter and come adorned with an array of tantalizing sauces like sweet honey butter and spicy gochujang.
The food was very good and the wings are bigger than expected. The food came out fast and the sides are good proportions. I had the double dip(Left) and pineapple jalapeno(right) wings. The pineapple jalapeno was my favorite and the mack and cheese was fantastic. Overall my experience at the Basic Bird was fantastic and I strongly suggest that you give it a try.
Nick M — Google review
Basic Bird has some amazing food! We went on a date to grab some late lunch after a busy morning. Service: Wonderful Food: Excellent Drinks: Nice Vibe: Fun We ordered items we usually would not. I got the kimchi rice wrapped in an egg. She ordered the instant ramen salad. We also ordered the sweet fries. The cashier/server made some excellent suggestions and were patient with us having good conversation. I highly recommend the wings or chicken tenders. There isn't a bad sauce, just pick one for your mood. The potato salad, kimchi and fries are all excellent sides. Our dishes were fantastic and we enjoyed them! We are looking forward to going back 😍

Food here was awesome! I really like my honey butter boneless wings, the corn cheese, mac and cheese, and potato salad. Fries were also awesome. Yellow is my favorite color so loved the decorations in the restaurant as well :) My boyfriend really liked his food as well. I’m sure we will go back!
Bethany B — Google review
I wasn’t expecting to find a Korean fried chicken place in Des Moines. My boyfriend and i shared the 9 piece boneless wings and we tried their spicy gochujang and sweet honey butter sauces. I LOVED the spicy gochujang but don’t think i would get the honey butter one again. For our sides we got the miso mac and cheese, Korean potato salad, rice, and French fries. The Korean potato salad really surprised me, it was delicious and my favorite of the 4 sides. I enjoyed their fries, they didn’t taste greasy and had a nice seasoning. The miso mac was good but i couldn’t really taste the miso. My boyfriend and i agreed that the side of rice could’ve used some salt. Overall, this was a really good spot and the prices are great. I said to my boyfriend “if we lived in town i’d be here multiple times a month.”

Listen up!!! This is my favorite now okay 😆 my fiance and I ordered those awesome fries, loaded with lots of flavor and cheese and ordered Kimchi cabbage and cucumber, came with a side of rice but not just any kind of rice the seasoning they used on it actually threw me for a shock so meaning great taste, also kid friendly high chairs and more chair available if you have additional members seating along with you, the name Basic Bird doesn't give justice for how great the food is lol and I like that. Mac and cheese was pretty buttery and cheesy tasting so im actually not made at because my 1 yr old like it, but I will say Mac and cheese is just missing a little umph in it but still over all good regardless. Hannah was our waitress and she answered any questions we had and also gave us a sample of the Lava sauce !!!! May I ADD OMG GRRREATTTTTT❤️ 😍 💖 WE ORDERED 18 WINGS AND NEED I ADD THAT LAVA SAUCE COMPLIMENTED THE WINGS MORE AND STAND OUT MORE!!!!!! you know the chicken is great when my baby boy cried for more okay !! lol a. Lade came in she was a door washer and she even had to ask out the fries. AGAIN I MUST SAY 10/10 !!!!!!! PARKING IS FREE, SMALL LOT BUT INCASE IT IS FULL OTHER PARKING LOTS AND STREET PARKING IS AVAILABLE AS WELL. I'm not saying their was no handicap parking but perhaps I may have over looked it. I will say if you are in a wheelchair the tables are low energy and entering the building is still easy accessible to get in and out for sure. Back to the meal the amount paid for 2 ppl to share answered have left overs for later ran about 70, but.......... keep in mind the portion of food you get you can share if you want . Basically it's al about what you get and how much you plan to eat of course, but it is worth it ok you will not be disappointed. Clean environment. Nice and quiet and just over all great vibes and energy 😌 we will be coming back again soon 💋 😘 Thank you BASIC BIRD NOW IT'S TIME TO EXPAND YOU COMPANY TO THE EAST NORTH CAROLINA CHARLOTTE NC TO BE EXACT WE WOULD VERY MUCH SPEND AND ADORE THIS TYPE OF EATING :) LOL BUT SERIOUSLY JUST A THOUGHT TO PUT OUT THERE IN CASE YOU WERE THINKING OF EXPANDING.

This is definitely the best Korean fried chicken I have ever had. The kimchi is wonderful and the rice is perfect. Side dishes were big portions. I wish I had known this place was here sooner. Gluten free.

Eaten here many times and the food and service have always been great! I usually order the chicken sandwich with double dunk sauce, potato salad, and cucumber kimchi (pictured). Would eat again!

UPDATE June 28, 2025 (5*): We were craving Korean Fried Chicken and my husband had never been so I decided to give Basic Bird another try. It was pretty dead tonight, but also within an hour of closing. The person at the counter graciously gave us time to scour the menu--letting us know they were available for any questions. The menu was slightly different than the first time I went so I had to re-evaluate. Today was such a different experience than 18 months ago! The food was hot and juicy, thoroughly cooked, deliciously flavorful, and perfectly seasoned! And, the chicken was wonderfully crunchy! It checked all the boxes! The Sweet Honey Butter sauce is still 🔥🔥🔥They even added some hot sides to the menu which were fantastic! The staff said that they went through some changes (dredging methods, processes, got rid of eat-in only dishes, etc...) And, it seems that it has really played in their favor. Will definitely be back. January 20, 2024 (3*): At first glance, the interior is super cute and cheery. We came in around 5:30pm on a Saturday evening. The line was already long and there were no tables available so 3 out of the 5 of us stayed to order takeout. This is not a sit-down establishment, it's counter service where you order and then sit down with a number. The tables didn't turn very quickly but there is some high counter seating if you're coming there alone or with one other person. We were a group of five so we wanted to chat and catch up. Their middle menu is strictly dine-in only so I ordered the Cheesy Rice Dumplings (Tteokbokki) for the three of us to share while we waited for the takeout. That was really tasty. The rice cakes had the right cook and texture and the sauce with the cheese and brussels really complemented each other. For my main, I got the boneless wings in the sweet honey butter sauce as well as the traditional bone-in wings in a mixture of the sweet and spicy sauces (double dunk). The sauces on the chicken were good but the chicken lacked the typical, famous crunch that Korean Fried Chicken has. I've had Basic Bird previously. They would serve out of Harbinger on Sundays (before they opened their brick and mortar location). THAT, WAS AMAZING!!! This, was nothing close. My meals came with 3 sides each, so I got all of them. They're all cold which is typical in Korean cuisine, but I did not like the marinated brussel sprouts cold. The shishito peppers are also not good cold. The pickled daikon was too thick and chunky to accompany the small bites of chicken. The cucumber kimchi was alright, but too sweet. The only two that everyone loved were the potato salad and cabbage kimchi. As added insight, but with no factor playing into my own assessment or rating. Two of my friends got the chicken sandwich. The other two got wings. The girls with the chicken sandwiches felt that their chicken was largely undercooked. Three of my friends subbed french fries for an upcharge and didn't get any. By the time they realized they weren't in the bag we were already at the house. And, if you call, you're unable to reach a human so we would've had to drive back. All in all, this visit was a miss. Maybe they were just having an off-day. They were super busy, and it seems that they're under-staffed. They were also out of a few things we wanted to try--the chicken and kimchi dumplings and the chicken and chive dumplings. I'll give it a few months and go back. I was disappointed this time but I know what they're capable of.

Restaurant
Nestled in the charming neighborhood of Orilla, now part of West Des Moines, The Chicken is a must-visit for fried chicken enthusiasts. This delightful eatery specializes in Nashville Hot boneless fried chicken served with crispy fries and a fluffy biscuit, alongside options like boneless chicken strips and their signature Iowa hot chicken tossed in a buttery seasoning blend. For those seeking something hearty, the broasted chicken dinner can be spiced up with Nashville hot sauce for an extra kick.
Jalapeños popper deviled eggs were amazing! Orilla philly sandwich was to die for! Lot's of chicken, peppers, onions, mushrooms and cheese. Couldn't eat it all it was so filling

The chicken was great. Had the bang bang taco and slider. Good sauce good breading on chicken crispy and juicy . You can tell this is hand made and not frozen out bag. I will return to try the hot Iowa sliders.

Love The Chicken!! Need to go more often since it's fairly close. Great wholesome food, always get good service! It's simply a terrific place to go eat or even drink as they have a full bar as well! If you like, you may sit outside too!

Didn’t see the kids menu online so attached a picture of what we received at dinner. We ordered the kids mini corn dogs, onion rings (the seasoning 🤌🏼), the Iowa Chicken Sundae, and Nashville Hot Boneless Fried Chicken. I believe my Nashville Hot was supposed to have a sauce which it did not, unfortunately. They were dry tenders, good, just was looking for a little heat - which was disappointing. Everything was good, huge sides of fries! Would come back!!

Absolute gem of a local spot, if you like fried food. We were in town and told about the chicken from a local. Sounded awesome, so we had to try it. We were sold on big portions, great service, tasty food, and a great beer list. All of these things were true. We started with curds and broasted wings. Bu the time the main courses came out, we were already stuffed. Be careful not to overdo it like we did! The sliders and Nashville hot boneless were both awesome: the curds were great and the wings had super flavor. No complaints at all, except my belt may be living in a new hole now. Service was great and beer menu was extensive. All in all, everything we were sold on.

Walked in for lunch on Memorial Day and were seated immediately. It was kind of an awkward location being smack dab in the middle of the dining room in front of the entrance. Our server was quick to greet us and was extremely welcoming as it was our first time. She answered every question enthusiastically and obviously knew a lot about the food they serve. She was AWESOME! The food didn't take long to come out. The cheese curds were pretty good. My hubby got the Nashville hot chicken sandwich which tasted great but was drenched in grease and ended up all over his face. He ended up just taking the bun off and eating the chicken with a fork and knife. My chicken bowl was so-so. I was craving comfort food. Even though the chicken was perfectly seasoned and juicy, the mashed potatoes and corn were just kind of boring. I felt like the other ingredients should have added some dimension to the dish, but even after dousing it with hot sauce it was still just meh. I was looking forward to something like a Thanksgiving leftover mashup but all of the flavors here just muted each other. I'd be keen to try something else next time. Notes: Plenty of seating, fair prices, and HUGE portions (at least 2 meals worth on one plate).

Hot fresh food, delicious fried chicken entrees. Nice outdoor patio tho it was raining during our visit. Will definitely be back. Pictured bang bang chicken tacos and Nashville hot chicken sliders (heat but not a lot) iowa hot is said to be more heat

Charlotte's Kitchen is a fast-casual restaurant in Johnston that opened in 2021, inspired by the owner's grandmother, Charlotte. The menu specializes in fried chicken sandwiches and wraps. The founders were influenced by their grandmother's cooking, aiming to recreate the feeling of enjoying comfort food at grandma's kitchen. Customers praise the quality of the chicken, whether breaded and fried or grilled, as well as the addition of new delicious items to the menu.
Everyone needs to try this place!! For our twins' 17th birthday, we gave them the choice of here or Canes. They picked Charlotte's because it is amazing. The vibe is farmhouse chic meets cozy grandma's house. I love the crab Rangoon sandwich and salad- they are both amazing. Of course, we got loaded tots. Highly recommend!

It is my new favorite fast food. If you are ever in the mood for a really good chicken sandwich, Charlotte's Kitchen is the place to go. The fries are seasoned so well as well. To make things even better, if you don't feel like fries, you can get their fried cheese curds. My husband loves their weekly specials. They have a different signature main meal every week if you ever feel like changing things up. Definitely give Charlotte's Kitchen a try.

Fantastic chicken sandwiches, the perfect level of crispy. Honestly don't know why everyone else is knocking the price, seriously, this chicken is a STEAL at these prices. Should really be a CRIME to sell chicken this good!
Todd G — Google review
I recently visited Charlotte’s Kitchen and it was a delightful experience! This small, local gem offers some of the juiciest and tastiest chicken sandwiches I’ve had locally in a while. I tried both the Crab Rangoon and the Nashville Hot sandwiches. The Crab Rangoon was my absolute favorite, boasting a unique taste and flavor that set it apart from typical chicken sandwiches. The Nashville Hot was also delicious, offering a nice spicy kick. The service was excellent, with very friendly staff who greeted us with warm smiles and ensured we had everything we needed. Overall, Charlotte’s Chicken is a must-visit for anyone in the area looking for a great chicken sandwich with a touch of local charm. Highly recommended!
Nedžad D — Google review
Fantastic service! Greeted with a smile. Explained the menu. They have rotating special chicken sandwiches in addition to the regular variety. The original sandwich, chicken was great, but the sauce was overpowering. The fries had great texture. The coleslaw was extremely over seasoned, with what seemed to be the same seasoning used on their signature sauce or their fries. Was weird and not very palatable. Overall a really cool place. Definitely try it.

Very friendly people and very good food! Had the crab Ragoon sandwich. Definitely good.
Christina C — Google review
Wow, just wow. The spicy Nashville chicken sandwich was spectacular. The side of loaded tater tots hit the spot. The menu is all chicken and sides so expect that. At lunch it was packed but we were able to get a seat. The food was fresh and fast which is hard to do. A home run, a must try.

This restaurant has really grown on me in the last few months. Usually everything is great but today I found myself very disappointed. I always order the chicken sandwich with buffalo, fries, and a shake. The shake was already melting when I started drinking it, the sandwich was extremely salty and there was a lot of the breaded part stacked into the sandwich and over fried. I asked for extra ranch which I regret because it was watery and I’m not sure how. I basically had to drench the sandwich in ranch to be able to eat it. I feel that moving forward they should watch how much they season the chicken in general.

The Iowa Taproom, located in downtown Des Moines, is a historic and industrial haunt offering over 100 regional craft beers and locally sourced New American fare. The restaurant boasts a beer-hall style setting in a 19th-century building with a unique patio hidden between two buildings, providing the perfect spot to enjoy food from their extensive menu and drinks from their wide selection.
I love craft beer. I've had over 3500 different beers. The Iowa taproom had 120 different beers all from Iowa. Pretty amazing. I had the best seat at the bar and could see all the tap handles. The food was great too and my bartenders were awesome!

You can never fail when heading to the Iowa Taproom, I ordered the chicken tenders while my husband ordered the peanut butter burger - both amazing! Drinks are always good and you can’t go wrong with what you pick. You are able to order a flight of drinks as well!

We went on a Friday night and it was packed! The place is laid out nicely but it is loud. You have to really strain to hear your table. However the prices were great and the food tasted amazing. My wife and I got two different types of tacos, both were yummy. I also tried a flight of beers, which seemed adequately priced. Then I went too far and got the Iowa Pie for dessert. It was amazing too and a very generous portion.

My husband and I were just passing through and needed food! WOW, are we glad we stopped here! Loved, loved the unique menu. It was sooo difficult to make a decision! I had the salmon salad and my husband had the pulled pork sandwich and they were both extremely delicious! We also loved the selection of both beer and cider! THE FOOD and THE STAFF - AMAZING! Don’t pass up a chance to dine and drink at the Iowa Tapeoom!

Great place for any size group. Food is delicious, beer is plenty, great atmosphere and friendly staff. Pricing is modest and affordable.

By far 1 of the BEST beer bars I've been to! The service was spectacular, and so was the food! The honey Sriracha dip for the steak egg rolls was the perfect amount of heat and very well balanced! My salmon salad - fantastic! And those wings were really good also! Beer selection - wow! 120 beers on tap. This place was huge! There are no booths from what I saw from where we were sitting, but they had plenty of seating when we went at 4pm on a Fri afternoon. Can't wait to go back and try more of the menu and beers! Samples of beer are free! They have 4 or 5 beer flights you can choose from, or build your own. Starting price is $14. If you're not into beer or cider, there's also liquors for mixed drinks.

Cocktail bar
Zombie Burger + Drink Lab is a trendy American restaurant and cocktail bar with a playful horror theme. The menu features over 20 unique burgers with creative names like Dead Moines, The Walking Ched, Undead Elvis, and Juan of the Dead. In addition to the burger options, there are vegan choices and a delicious pork tenderloin sandwich. This popular spot gained fame for its inventive offerings such as the Walking Ched burger with a deep-fried macaroni and cheese bun.
This is probably my all-time favorite restaurant due to the fantastic food, creativity of the menu and the atmosphere. I am a huge fan of Zombie movies and shows. I love all the decor throughout the restaurant, and the Zombie news on the back of the menu is a nice touch. Anytime we are in Des Moines we stop here for dinner. Tonight was our 4th time eating dinner here. The food and service is always fantastic. The prices are reasonable. My only complaint is they are always sold out of merchandise. So far we have only been able to buy a couple koozies. They have some really cool T-shirts and I would love to own one someday.

Unique place with great food! It was relatively busy when we arrived with a 25 minute wait to dine inside Zombie Burger. They also had patio seating for a slightly shorter wait. While waiting we took the opportunity to do some of the photo ops and noticed a Ramen place attached. Turns out, it's all the same place with the same menu and this side could serve us immediately. The lady was super welcoming and friendly. We ordered fried pickles, a cheeseburger, Dawn of the Dead, Walking Ched, & T-Virus all with fries. Everything was made to order and delicious. Fries were perfect.... perfect batter, perfect flavor, perfect crunch. It was a little on the pricey side, coming in at over $86 without tip. Overall, it was family friendly and a good experience.

Fun! Friendly! Delicious! We came into town for the Nicotine Dolls/Wic Whitman concert from Minnesota, a few local Ladies we were standing near told us about Zombie Burger so we hung around on Friday to see the sights until they opened. We are so glad we did! The leather Face was to die for. And the Brussel sprouts with the Zombie sauce was AMAZING! We sat outside as it was a beautiful breezy day, then this FREAKY TRUCK PULLED UP! AND A PIG MAN JUMPED OUT WITH A CHAIN SAW!!! How fun! I asked my wait staff if it was just because it was October? They said Nope, they were from the slaughter house where they get their meat from..."Just making their weekly delivery!" Talk about perfect timing to be there! It totally completed our AMAZING girls trip to Des Moines. It was my mother's 78th birthday getaway...one she will NEVER forget! Thank you Nicotine Dolls Wic Whitney and ZOMBIE BURGER!!!!!

I've been here a handful of times over the past few years. The burgers are decent and the milkshakes are always pretty good. My favorite thing to get every time is the Goat Cheese Poppers, though. So good! Especially with the raspberry dipping sauce. Somehow, it just works! I'm not sure when they added the ramen, but my hubs brought it home tonight. It was alright. The broth was a little too bitter and the char sui was cooked weird for being in ramen. It was still decent, but I think I would just stick with the burger after my next year-long hiatus. Love the updates to the inner-space, and the kiosks for ordering take-out. Novelty food, for sure. But if you like jalapeño poppers then definitely try theirs!

Tried Zombie Burger for the first time and had their special K-Pop Ramen Hunters—absolutely delicious! I don’t usually handle spice very well, but the staff was awesome and swapped the spicy broth for pork broth, which I really appreciated. On top of that, their cereal shakes are a must-try—sweet, fun, and just as good as they sound. Definitely a spot worth checking out!

Sure it’s a little gimmicky but it’s an indulgent treat every once in a while. I got a cinnamon toast crunch shake which it’s exactly as sweet and delicious as you’d expect. I also got the Juan of the dead burger with lettuce (no bun) and the veggie nut patty. I was expecting a lettuce wraps but was pleasantly surprised it was more like a salad. The veggie patty was unique and not your typically black bean burger. The burger was cheese and the sauce was creamy. I appreciate they gave the sauce on the side so it wasn’t soaking wet. It’s a bit pricey but worth it. Parking meters and garage nearby are finicky but not the restaurant’s fault.

Zombie Burger – 4/5 The food was really good, but what truly makes Zombie Burger stand out is the killer theme. The place is packed with clever, zombie-style takes on classic movie posters, and the atmosphere is an absolute vibe — everyone there seemed to be having a great time soaking it all in. I ended up giving it a 4/5, but honestly, that’s only because I think I ordered the wrong burger. I’ll definitely be back to try another one — this place is too fun (and too tasty) not to.

Fong's Pizza is a quirky blend of an old-school Polynesian cocktail lounge and a classic Italian eatery. Established in 2009 by local residents, this lively restaurant and tiki bar offers a diverse menu featuring Asian-Italian fusion cuisine. Housed in the former location of the iconic Chinese restaurant King-Ying-Low, which dates back to 1908, Fong's boasts an eclectic retro ambiance with Chinese, Tiki, Polynesian, and Italian decor.
This is one of those restaurants society must do everything to protect and support. It embodies what you love about food. It’s different but different with things you love. They do it perfectly with an unbelievable atmosphere and perfect service. They make sure you’re enjoying every moment of the experience. Let alone the food being delicious. Go there and don’t be bashful or hesitant to order a bunch of different items to try. Anytime I’m in the area this will be one of the stops.

It's a very unique place....I'll call it a Chinese pizza hut but with much better pizza. The atmosphere was very different but fun and clean. The pizza crust was excellent, but the fried rice was disappointing, so I'd stick more to the pizza side of the menu. There were many unique pizza options so be a little adventurous and try something new to surprise your taste buds. We would definitely go back.

Just happened to be passing through Des Moines and drove by Fongs. My wife said it had been on Triple D so I turned in. Very glad we did. They were having happy hour and any alcoholic drink got a free slice of pizza. We did the MaiTai's which they limit 2 per person. If you're a light weight probably makes sense. We got one slice of sausage and one of pepperoni to start. Very thin but good flavor. In doing some reading it was the Crab Rangoon pizza that Guy came to try so that's what we did. Gotta say they do a really good job of their Asian fusion with that. Great flavor. Could have been a bit more imitation krab on it but all in all a great job. If we were in Des Moines longer we would really like to try some of the other fusion pizzas. Maybe next trip. 👍

Was very happy to go to Fong's pizza. Service was good. If you like mozzarella cheese sticks, you need to try the cheese stick egg rolls. They were really good. The Crab Rangoon pizza was really good. I'm not sure I'm with Alton Brown from the Food Network and can say it's the best thing I ever ate but it was good and I would get it again. The General Tso Chicken pizza was good as well but felt like it needed a little bit more sauce. I would definitely go back and try more pizzas on my next trip to Des Moines.

Staff were friendly and helpful, the place looks amazing and smells great. The cheese sticks were delicious. The pizza was good just not my favorite but I can see why people enjoy it. If im back in town id give it another try maybe with a more traditional pizza topping.

Unique: they nail both your regular pepperoni and their signature pizzas like General Tso, which is amazing and I don't typically like that kind of stuff. The new location is awesome and seats way more people and parking is readily available. Coke products.

Fongolian beef and honey garlic (with chicken added). Both pizzas were great. Honey garlic was especially good with a bit of siracha to pair some spice with the sweet. Will be coming back again.

We really enjoyed our lunch at Fongs! The atmosphere was enjoyable with plenty of space to dine comfortably, party of five. The dining area was clean and tidy. Our server/hostess/bus person was attentive, but not overly so. They took our drink orders, allowed us plenty of time to peruse the menu and place our order with no rush. As we dined, they stopped by occasionally asking if we needed anything, checking to be sure we were enjoying our visit and food. We ordered the limited time Oktoberfest pizza, crab rangoon pizza and the Iowan. As always, the crab rangoon pizza was the crowd pleaser. The Iowan our second favorite and the Oktoberfest pizza was also a delight. Everything was served fresh and made to order. So good! Fongs is a great place to dine with family, friends, anyone, really! The pizza is where it's at!

Not only the best restaurant in Des Moines, but my favorite in the whole country! I normally hate beer, and I don’t know what magic Exile brews up, but my favorite drinks ever are the beers here at Exile. The food is fresh and high quality ingredients. Highly highly suggest!

This brewery was nice to visit. They had a food truck available (Jethros BBQ) where I got me some smoked wings. The wings were terrible 😫. Even Flash fried, the meat was tough. Never doing that again. But other than that, the brewery was very nice with an outside patio. The view was great.

Stopped in on a visit after trying the pumpkin beer at a restaurant nearby. It was so good and we are from a total beer town so we had to investigate the brewery. We wish we could have taken some of the beer home! During our time there, they had a haunted house type area you could sit in-which after having to move inside from the patio (also nice). It was so cool and they also were super helpful in finding NA options.

Had a lovely time here! I was 40 minutes early for an interview and the waitresses were very kind and offered samples while waited. They had excellent suggestions for my unique preferences in drinks and I settled on a Tico Time. Once my company arrived, we had split 4 meatball side which was steaming and had a nice spice kick to it. We chatted for a long time and I had an Exile Burger medium done with some fries and a mayo style dip. It was so juicy and flavorful with a little crunch from the included fried onion rings on it. I only give it a 4 for food since was my first time, but I'd gladly go visit and try my beer and food.

I'm so glad that I decided to walk over and give this place a try. I drove a 2nd grade field trip up to the Blank Park Zoo and the Science Center and had about an hour. There was a lot to look at, sports memorabilia and Supernatural on one of the TVs. I ordered the burger with fries. I wasn't disappointed, it was delicious and there was plenty to eat. The waitress was delightful, we talked about the show, some of the many beers on tap and the nostalgic wrestling photos in the back. The food was excellent! The number of craft drinks was exquisite. They will even make you a craft drink. BUT really the experience was the service by the server named Shoe. Shoe's table side manner was spot on and he knew what would be the perfect drink for us. Shoe was extremely knowledgeable and had great listening skills to help make the experience amazing. We also played a game of HOT ONES with the hot sauces which was a blast with the onion rings!! We will definitely be back and before our 11th anniversary.

What a place! So much stuff to see on the walls, but it’s not gimmicky feeling. The music is very 90’s punk on a Monday night which is fantastic, and goes either way the homemade feel of having boasted chicken that is juicy and crispy. I ordered fish & chips, Caesar salad, and a cup of beef stew for take-out. I arrived about 5min after it was supposed to be ready and my walk back to the hotel was another 5min. The fish was packaged under the fries, rendering away any crisp that might have been on the fish. Five lovely pieces! All stuck together in a soft mushy pile. The salad is limp, but edible. The stew is somehow room temp? Pretty disappointing since this food is usually fool proof. My guess is it’s great if you get it in the pub along with a beer.

Chicago Speakeasy is a unique supper club and bar in Des Moines, offering a Prohibition-era vibe with live music and a large salad bar. The establishment is known for its prime rib specials on Monday nights and the classic steak de Burgo dish. The salad bar boasts an array of homemade dishes, including unique desserts like Oreo fluff and pina colada. Guests can also enjoy hot, fresh bread and flavorful sides like loaded baked potatoes.
Had a wonderful experience at Chicago Speakeasy. We were greeted + seated immediately, the place was fairly busy for a Monday lunch, so I knew it was going to be good!! FOOD: They have a huge menu w/ daily specials! I got the prime rib that comes with a complimentary plate to the salad bar (or unlimited for $2.99) + fries ($16.99). My meat was cooked perfectly and it was delicious! I practically inhaled my meal. DESSERT: Their Oreo mousse at the salad bar was the perfect sweet treat. I would have used my single salad plate on that alone if I knew how good it was going to be. SERVICE: Service was quick and easy but nothing remarkable. Our waitress refilled our soft drinks without us having to ask and they cleared plates swiftly. PARKING: Big enough parking lot for the size of the restaurant & free!

This resteraunt doesn't have prices online, making my visit there even more distressful. First, the food was amazing. I ordered the grilled shrimp over rice, snd the salad is the bomb. It's worth going just for the salad bar. We arrived 20 minutes before lunch was ending, but we were still charged dinner prices. Service was okay, but when we got our bill, the waitress had apparently put all three deserts (over $12.00 x 3 people) on my bill which another lunch guest noticed. I had my bill in my hand, and went to look it over, but she took it out of my hand despite my request to view it first. When she brought the "revised" bill back, it wasn't itemized, so I couldn't tell if I'd been over charged. I asked for an itemized bill, but she kept telling me that the extra deserts had already been taken off. I asked again stating I wanted an itemized bill to check, and again I was told the other deserts had already been removed. The total appeared the same as the unrevised bill, but because I was only allowed to glance at it before it physically being taken out of my hand by the waitress who refused to allow be to review it, I can't be sure. I also never recieved an itemized final bill, so I really don't know for sure. Basically, I had to rely on my watresses word that the bill was correct. Not cool when we were given the dinner menu 20 minutes before lunch was officially over, and that their prices aren't listed anywhere. Food was great with the exception of one guests fish was over cooked and dry.

Ordered the Hot Beef Sandwich special yesterday (Wednesday) It was $15 and came with Salad bar. I was extremely disappointed in the sandwich. I was expecting chunks of juicy tender fresh roast beef. Instead I got thin, silver slivers of what looked like freezer burnt meat. It was tough, chewy and dry. I've had better food in the hospital. The potatoes were a watery mush that resembled boxed potatoes. The "gravy" I'm not sure what it was. It was just a brown flavorless goop. The salad bar saved the day. They need to scrap this sandwich from the menu!

We’re been here as a date night at least 6 times and easily our #1 spot in central Iowa for a cozy romantic place to retreat for a culinary meal. Portions are perfect and their tenured staff knows the menu well. The bar offers some exceptional talent and craft cocktails and also a nice selection of not old world wines. Not better place in DSM to celebrate a special night or even a “just because” treat at the end of a hard week

Harbinger was an amazing experience. The staff was friendly and attentive. I never felt silly for asking any questions. The food was fantastic. We got the chef's tasting with wine pairing and it was absolutely worth the price. Reservations recommended, and expect to spend time here enjoying your party's company.

Incredible food, marvelous service. Each bite of food felt like a separate experience, and I savored all of it. They were also more than accommodating of my dietary preferences and were very thoughtful. We went for happy hour, and the $8 dishes were honestly my favorites of the entire menu (the bao buns and shokupan). The chef’s tasting was decadent. 10/10 recommend.

The tasting menu here is a phenomenal expression of midwestern farm to table delight! The love the veggies get always impresses me. But the spiritual experience of the meal? The blue cheese cheese cake. Other worldly. Stop what you’re doing and go order it.

We made a reservation for dinner while passing through Des Moines on a road trip. We were promptly greeted and seated at our table. My wife was given a menu with vegetarian options highlighted, a nice touch! Jannea provided superb service and explanation of the menu. We each ordered cocktails off the menu which were excellent! I had the tasting menu, see photo of courses, which was an experience I will never forget. Beautifully plated, well timed and delicious! The Vietnamese Tiramisu left me speechless! We made a point to go back to Harbinger during on the return of our road trip and took advantage of their happy hour menu. We were promptly seated during this visit as well. Kudos to the Chefs, Bartender, and Service Staff, especially Jannea for giving us a night to remember!

This was such an amazing meal! You could really tell how much thought went into each dish. The Island Creek Oysters with miso butter and chicken skin xo were some of the best oysters i’ve ever had. The steamed buns were addicting, especially the chicken and rhubarb one, i would have ordered more if i wasn’t already so full! The vegetable broth in the spring green dumpling dish was perfection. I also can’t stop thinking about the english pea lumache pasta dish. And both desserts were absolutely incredible. Who knew yuzu and blue cheese could work so well together? The service was great as well, our server was very nice and fun. I’m so glad i came here and would definitely come back while in town!

Every meal here has been incredible. The restaurant week menu is always a surprise and incredibly fun. I had their normal tasting menu last night with the wine pairing and what a phenomenal meal (though I wonder if one dish didn't have a pairing? It wasn't clear and I didn't get a glass for it but it was fine). Cozy environment with small quirky bathrooms that makes the place feel more homey in a way. Reservations recommended.

What a treat! The 7 course chefs selection was a hit with our family last night. Adding our favorites (those steamed buns!) made it fabulous! The blue cheese dessert sounded odd and incorporated savory, sweet and tart! Loved it! (Pictured) I love this experience each time we visit. Thank you! Your passion for food, service and hospitality is evident. Wagyu beef, Tuna, Chicken, the first ever Salad on the menu and Flourless Choc Cake were some of our favorites.

The University Library Cafe is a cozy and classic bar located in the Drake neighborhood of Des Moines. It offers a wide selection of draft beers, including local craft brews, making it an ideal spot to meet up with friends for a casual hangout. The cafe also serves delicious breakfast options such as Breakfast Nachos, smothered potatoes topped with ham and eggs, and corned beef hash. Additionally, their menu features a flawlessly cooked burger served on Texas toast with fresh ingredients.
This place was a fun spot! It’s a small dive bar that I’ve been wanting to check out in Des Moines. The nachos were incredibly delicious and the beers poured perfectly.

I’ve been here for a beer and a bite numerous times and it never disappoints. Their food is delicious and they have a great selection of drinks. The vibes in here are great too.

Pssst. Not a library! BUt what it is, is awesome! A tiny place with massive charm, serving elevated grub pub and epic breakfast. Pair that with a full bar, cool locals and lots of history and that is what this place is! After one visit we are believers and will be back for more. If you are looking for a quaint place with a cool vibe and a great selection of menu and drink items, with fun and eclectic decor this is the right spot. We enjoyed a Philly and a chicken bacon ranch sandwich and some signature cocktails. All were on point and I would recommend the chicken bacon ranch sandwich for sure! So delicious. The service was fantastic and even thought they were experiencing some issues with the beer taps they made up for it with a full bar and cans of desired. Highly recommend this spot.

Another trip down memory lane while I am in Des Moines has to include a stop at the Library. This is a quintessential dive bar with excellent bar food and a huge beer selection. I was too hungry to snap a picture of the nachos but that’s one thing they’re well known for and I definitely recommend them. For entrees a sandwich or burger is your best bet but they have other options that are all delicious. Their burgers are a thicker cut patty that’s well seasoned, great fries too. If you’re looking for a good beer selection you can’t go wrong here. It’s a small space so spots fill up fast but if there’s a wait it’s worth it. Be sure to check this spot out if you’re rolling through Des Moines!

Small, cozy place. We visited Thursday about 8:45pm. It was about 2/3 full with two open tables and some bar seating. Customers seemed like a mix of locals and some nearby Drake U students. Bartender was also wait staff. Friendly service, neither fast nor slow, just fine. A decent selection of national and local beers on tap. Food (BLT and burger) was really good. We'd easily go back if we were locals.

The food used to be great (about 3 years ago) but now it's pretty bad and always dripping in grease. I've gotten some really bad mixed drinks here (Moscow mule without any lime, white Russian that was just milk) but they do carry a lot of great ciders. The bartenders are always very kind but one of the servers (Mo/Moe) is incredibly rude and will talk nasty about bar patrons within earshot. A lot of the regulars are super sweet but there are the occasional people who are hammered and will touch everyone in the building. It really is a shame that the food has gone so downhill as this bar is very cute and homey

great place for breakfast! French toast is very good. we had buscuits and gravy and then the chicken fried steak. the gravy for the both was very peppery the way I like it. a little too much for my wife. overall excellent 👌
JusttryitDIY — Google review
Cute little hole in the wall, comfy dig with impressively great food. Burger on Texas toast was perfectly cooked with nice and toasty bun, loaded with ample fresh toppings. Fries were possibly the best in Des Moines, steak style cut but perfectly crispy! Their famous nachos had really unique chip texture, but I wasn't wowed by the topping distribution or how it all came together. All in all the service was outstanding and they rushed out to bring us our keys. One of the best quiet secrets in DSM, but a genuinely great restaurant worth coming to for the food, on top of cozy vibes.

Tupelo Honey Southern Kitchen & Bar is a charming eatery that offers a creative twist on classic Southern comfort food. Located in the Miesblock Building at 665 Grand Ave, this restaurant boasts an all-day menu featuring favorites like bone-in fried chicken brined for over 18 hours, honey-dusted panko-crusted fried green tomatoes, and Southwestern wildflower honey-infused cocktails.
My wife and I had a very enjoyable time here. The service was friendly and the ambience was nice. The sriracha chicken and waffles had just the right balance of flavours. My wife's dish had some slightly undercooked eggs but they made that right very quickly. She enjoyed it and it was a hefty portion. The drinks were well priced. The desserts were very delectable. I personally recommend the pecan pie though my wife would have you know it's quite rich. Recommended.

Nice southern inspired restaurant in downtown Des Moines. Brussel sprout appetizer was good, chicken sandwich very good and mac n cheese was outstanding. Drinks were also good. They were very busy so the service was slow but decent. They only seemed to have one bartender for the entire bar. Food and drinks were good, I will return on a less busy evening.

In town for a show and stopped by for dinner. The vibe is what I might describe as garden modern and chic. Loved the wooden chandeliers and plants all around. I think they may have been short handed this Thursday evening because it took awhile to get seated, then awhile to get noticed, awhile for drinks, etc… nothing too speedy although staff was very sweet and helpful. We shared the fried pickles - good but a little salty. We enjoyed the thin pickle slices vs some that are too thick. Decided to share the pork tenderloin and onion rings for our entree. We’ve had better and definitely had worse - just nothing spectacular. I will say, the other more “southern” dishes coming out of the kitchen looked amazing so this issue may have been purely what we selected from the menu! All in all fun spot and we would try again.

I was surprised. The staff and place are really nice. Good service and overall a good experience. I got a hot chicken sandwich. To my surprise it was kinda cold and dry chicken which is hard as it’s a chicken thigh. Also surprising was there was almost no flavor or seasoning. Just a bland piece of dry cold chicken. Definitely not what I was expecting. The Brussels sprouts were good. Maybe it was an off day but the food did not match the expectations. I would however try it again.

Got the hot waffle and Mac n cheese for dinner. Super fluffy waffle and really good, crispy chicken. Wish there was more spicy sauce but that's a personal preference. Also got the fried pickles as an appetizer; they were okay. A little salty for my liking but the ranch is clearly homemade which was a big plus. Service and atmosphere were great too.

My wife and I went on a dinner and date along with our two year old, and it was fun even for her.☺️ Great food, good atmosphere. And all around nice people. They came over doing our dinner to check on us and see how he was doing. Maybe because we had a cute kid with us. I like their menu has a reasonable price. I honestly enjoy that it is clean and friendly.👍🏾 They have stree parking; yet it's downtown. So that is to be expected.🤷🏽‍♂️ It is wheelchair accessible. Clean restrooms 🚻 and I imagine it also has take out or to go order.

Tupelo Honey Southern Kitchen From the moment we walked in, the warmth of the staff and the inviting atmosphere set the tone for a delightful experience. Though the dining area had several patrons, the ambiance was calm and quiet—perfect for enjoying good company and even better food. The team of waitresses was exceptionally kind and attentive, eager to make sure we felt welcome. We started with the fried green tomatoes, which came out hot, crispy, and packed with flavor—a perfect Southern kick-off. We shared an entrée of buttermilk fried chicken tenders with a side of fried okra and rosemary Parmesan crispy potatoes. And I’m glad we split it—each of us got two juicy, golden-crusted tenders, a generous serving of sides, and by the end, we were satisfyingly stuffed. The chicken tenders were everything you hope for in comfort food: crunchy on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth tender inside. The okra? Let’s just say it rivaled Grandma’s... but maybe don’t tell her I said that. And those crispy potatoes? Rosemary and Parmesan came together like a symphony of flavor. Oh—and the sweet tea was liquid heaven. Done right, just like everything else. Final verdict: 10/10. Would absolutely recommend to anyone craving soul-soothing Southern food in a welcoming setting.

The people were so nice. So nice. But that food was DISGUSTING. There is no thought in the vegan menu. It was flavorless and a huge waste of money. I went on 5/18/2025. That cheese sauce was neon yellow. They can make a great cheese sauce from cashews, if they put more thought into their menu. The people were so sweet though.

Friendly service, solid breakfast in a fun vintage setting. Went with biscuits and gravy and my son did Fried chicken and waffles. We ate it all and wandered around the antique store for a bit. Reasonable pricing.

Railroad Bill’s Dining Car has been our go-to breakfast spot since we moved to Des Moines four years ago, and it never disappoints. I always order the vegan biscuits and gravy—hands down the best I’ve ever had. My husband can’t resist the John Henry, which is loaded with fried chicken, eggs, gravy, cheese, hashbrowns… basically all the breakfast comfort food in one glorious plate. We “accidentally” ended up splitting an order of their mini fried pancakes too, which are dangerously good. And their coffee? Easily some of the best in town. Friendly service, great casual vibe, and consistently fantastic food—this is a Des Moines gem we’ll keep coming back to.

This is a little breakfast joint with a great atmosphere and good food. The inside is rather small, so expect it to fill up at prime hours. Also, parking around this area isn't straightforward. We ordered a few items and while everything was good, there was nothing in particular that stood out as unique or interesting. The decor is great - our 3 year old loved the food and the trains.
Greg E — Google review
Didn't really know this place existed so wasn't really expecting a lot. The atmosphere is that of an old train depot that is connected to an antique store. The food is straight forward with not a lot of frills. Our food came out quickly, hot, and correct. In fact the meat was a little over cooked but not burnt, they just need to turn their grill down a little bit. We did ask for a side of ranch but the pre-packaged ones they gave us were expired so we didn't get to use them. All in all the food was delicious but absolutely no frills. I plan on coming back to try their lunch menu.

If you're craving a taste of Kansas City without the long drive, look no further than Truman's KC Pizza Tavern in the Historic East Village. This vibrant spot captures the essence of Midwestern charm with its lively atmosphere filled with Chiefs and Royals spirit. Indulge in their mouthwatering pizzas like The French Dip, served with a side of au jus, or The Mahomes, loaded with an array of meats including sausage and bacon.
Had a great time here. The breakfast pizza was delicious as well as their two specials. The mimosa was also amazing. We did discover breakfast is served until 1pm due to them having a small kitchen

Had the cheese balls and the Tuscan Steak Pizza. The service was attentive and food arrived fast. The place was packed watching March Madness, but you wouldn’t know it by how seamlessly each table was waited on. Pizza can be a hit or miss for me, and I would return to try their other styles because of the crust alone. It was light and not too thick (you can eat multiple slices and not feel sick) and cooked with a slight crisp but not overdone. I would recommend trying out the food and service at Truman’s Tavern.

Truman’s Pizza Review (Delivery Experience) We ordered from Truman’s through a delivery service — which always adds a bit of mystery to how the food will arrive. Fortunately, this time everything showed up hot and fresh! This review focuses on Truman’s food quality, based solely on our delivery experience. My wife Kim is a total pizza fanatic, so we’re always trying new places! She ordered the garlic cheese bread, which was fantastic — perfectly cheesy and delivered with a great dipping sauce. Honestly, it could stand alone as a meal! The star of the show was the Mahomes pizza. It arrived a bit messy — some toppings were haphazardly placed and unevenly distributed. This wasn’t a delivery issue, but likely how it was assembled at the restaurant. That said, it’s a minor complaint because the pizza itself was delicious. I loved all the toppings except the hamburger — it was just plain, unseasoned ground beef. It felt out of place on such a flavorful pizza. Thankfully, the pizza sauce was the hero — bold, flavorful, and full of character. And the crust? Thin but not too thin, with those awesome little bubbles and a perfect balance of chewy and crispy. (Sounds impossible, but it really was!) While I’d definitely prefer to dine in at Truman’s next time, the delivery experience was surprisingly solid given the distance. I hope Kim tipped well! Looking forward to visiting in person!

Went for breakfast on a Saturday morning. It was busy but not packed so we were able to get a booth. They offer your typical breakfast items and some unique options. The pickle blood mary was delicious! Perfect flavor and spice. Plus the pickle beer back was the cherry on top! We loved both the breakfast pizzas and had plenty for leftovers.

Truman’s Down Town - We ordered lunch for the office and I today. I ordered a Fiesta Chicken Salad. I read the ingredient list to my self as I am allergic to avocado I did not see that so I was safe. I opened the salad and took the ranch container out to see some guacamole on the bottom. I thought. Maybe it was a fluke and ate my salad. I got to the end and found mounds of Guacamole throughout the salad that I had eaten…. I called Truman’s and I asked If their Fiesta Chicken Salad came with Avocado and she said yes. I asked why their online menu doesn’t say that and she rudely said that it did. I told her that I was looking at the discription and it did not say that. She replied rudely she would look. She checked and said “well I guess we will have to get that changed”. No offer to make things right, no asking if I was okay, nothing. I will say if you do not have food allergies the food is good, atmosphere is fun, but this rubbed me wrong.

Cozy, hip, great staff, amazing food! Huge selection!! I tried the special, grilled cheese and Mac pizza in honor of the Iowa State football team. I was extremely satisfied. It came with tomato bisque to dip it in. Oh and their selection of cocktails are endless. I had a piña colada mimosa with coconut purée and I could've gotten many more, but I decided to be a good girl.

Stopped in to attend the Thursday night trivia. I will say customer service was great and atmosphere was good. I would say I wish there was more seating options in doors. We arrived early and there was still only high tables which can be difficult with people with disabilities. Trivia was well done and host did a good job. I really wanted to love the food. They have some really fun options on the menu. I'm not sure if it was just a off night or not. I ordered the pot belly burnt end grilled cheese. I'm going to be honest I'm not sure how it's considered to be a grilled cheese. The roll/bun was not grilled, there was not really cheese, the burnt ends weren't charred in any way. To be honest it had very little flavor. I took maybe two bites took it home and didn't eat it. I'm wondering if maybe it's a different take and I just misunderstood what it was going to be. We also got the brownies and honestly they were ok. They didn't really have a distinct flavor. We also got the cheese bread which honestly tasted very off. With all this said we would definitely like to try the trivia again and the food again( like I said it could have been a bad night) Once I try food again I will edit my review

Just a quick stop for some food not looking for anything special. Saw Truman's and realized we hadn't been here in forever. What a great happenstance, food was a wonderful surprise. Ordered two different pizzas, one with Alfredo and meatballs with red peppers. Normally not my style but this worked, from the crust which was perfect to the garlic butter crust. Second pizza was a meat bonanza, Grazianos sausage, Canadian bacon, pepperoni. This one got my attention, sauce was spot on with just a hint of heat, it was perfection. After tonight I am calling Truman's my favorite Iowa pizza place. The Alfredo gets a 7.7 the Meat with red sauce gets a 8.5 the highest rating I have ever given a pizza in Iowa.

Clyde's Fine Diner, located in the East Village, offers a mix of relaxed and sophisticated vibes along with a delectable menu. The diner is known for its top-notch smash burgers, fries, and frequently rotating soft serve options. Additionally, it serves upscale seasonal entrees such as housemade smoked sausage with dirty rice arancini and burnt carrot puree.
Stopped in tonight for my second visit in 3 years. The last time I was here I had brunch with my girlfriends. Tonight, my husband and I enjoyed dinner together. Service is always excellent whether you're seated at a table or at the bar. The food is fantastic! I am seriously impressed with their ability to combine flavors. The food is always hot when it's supposed to be. I haven't had anything over or under-cooked here. Tonight, we had the Duck Croquettes, Pot Roast Sandwich, and a burger. Highly recommend all 3, especially the Pot Roast Sandwich! The meat was so tender and full of flavor, the cheese was perfectly melted, and the caramelized onions and crispy bread just brought it all together. Yum! You can't go wrong with any of their brunch items, either! The restaurant is beautifully designed. Definitely check it out!

Clyde's is a solid selection for an elevated yet casual dining experience. Located just off of downtown Des Moines, Clyde's provides patrons with a range of small bite, shareable and entre options. Integrating local flavors and ingredients into dishes across the menu, Clyde's doesn't shy away from unique twists on familiar items. During my visit I tried the dill pickle wings, BBQ chicken, brussel sprouts and tomatoes. While dinner was fine, Clyde's seems even more suited for a easy brunch and lunch.

I went to Clyde’s in Des Moines for dinner and wow, the drinks were amazing and the burger was honestly one of the best I’ve ever had. Totally nailed it. But… about that “kale salad.” I was so excited to order it (because who doesn’t love a good kale salad?), and what showed up was definitely not kale… it was spring mix. I asked the server just to be sure, and she confirmed that, yep, that’s their kale salad. So apparently “kale” means “spring mix” now? Kind of confusing. It definitely took some of the shine off an otherwise great meal. Everything else was fantastic, though, and I’d absolutely come back, hopefully next time for an actual kale salad! EDIT: In response to the reply - spring mix is a “pre-packaged salad blend of various young, tender baby leaves”. Therefore, a variety of baby kale falls into the category of spring mix. For example, I ordered a kale salad at another restaurant last night and it was “regular kale” as expected. I recommend updating the name and/or description of your salad to avoid confusion or disappointment from other kale lovers like me!

Before coming here I had heard great things from a friend so I had relatively high expectations and it didn't disappoint. It's a lovely building, the interior design is fancy yet unimposing. A nice upscale, modern diner with a well thought out bar. I really liked it. For us, it was a quiet evening so service was prompt. The waitress was helpful and talkative but didn't bother us too much other than to ask how we were doing and if we needed any refills. The menu is small which I appreciated and everything is well priced for the area. It seemed well put together and everything sounded delicious. I found it difficult to pick. In the end I chose to go for a diner classic. A smash burger and fries and both were just excellent, no complaints. It was very well portioned but I swear it was gone in the blink of an eye, I enjoyed it that much. The fries are were delicious too. Ours were deep fried and served with ketchup and a very tasty malt vinegar mayonnaise which I adored. (A rare thing for me, I'm usually very indifferent towards mayo). My only ask as far as the food goes is that it would be nice to offer people malt vinegar at the table! Love to have it on fries. As for the rest of the experience it was generally good. I had a few nit-pics. Another family entered shortly after us and were sat besides us despite there being many other available spaces. This made things feel more cramped than they had to be. I like having more space to eat if possible. Additionally, I wasn't a fan of the credit card fees (3 to 3.5% respectively depending on card issues). I understand why they exist and it's nice they offer debit and cash paying customers a small discount but I would prefer to see it factored into the food price more broadly, nobody likes seeing extra fees tacked on at the end, it's bad enough with tips and taxes. There was also a mix up with our bills in the end, the waitress corrected it quickly so it's not a problem but she forgot to apply our happy hour discount on our sides and I can see others not noticing which isn't good. Lastly, I'd love to see Coke Zero or Pepsi Zero Sugar products on the menu and calories for each menu item listed. It's a small thing but I really do appreciate it as it makes nutritional tracking much easier. Overall a great experience. I'll definitely be back.

Great brewery with a solid variety of tasty beers. The outdoor area is especially nice—comfortable seating, fire pits, and TVs make it a great spot to relax and catch a game. Overall, a great experience. The only downside was an interaction with one of the bartenders (a blonde woman) who seemed a bit inattentive and could benefit from some customer service training. Other than that, everything else was excellent

I'm really impressed! This was my first brewery in Des Moines and recommended to me by a friend. First, the ambiance is absolutely awesome. There's a ton of natural lighting indoor and the outdoor seating is also wonderful - you do not feel trapped at all. The food and drink are good as well. I went with a 7 oz citrus surfer lime and a summer jam sour for my drinks and the special of the day - Yakitori - for my food. I was surprised by how multicultural the menu was and just really impressed. Great spot.

My family and I enjoyed going here for dinner. I would recommend and would return. This Big Grove location is set up well inside with the classy yet fun decor style, as well as outside with the patio seating and fire pit. It is spacious with plenty of seating. I ordered the stir fry noodles, which were a little too spicy for my taste as someone who prefers mild on a spice level, but were very good nonetheless. I also enjoyed a fruity and sweet mocktail from their menu. Not to mention, the free parking lot right next to the building is appreciated and convenient. The staff were friendly and helpful. Overall, my family and I had a good experience. We enjoyed checking out the gift shop after dinner as well.

As a beer review I’d give them 2/5, the beer was drinkable. I was told it was a sister brewery to Lua and I honestly don’t know how because Lua makes amazing beer and Big Grove is sub par in comparison. Staff were friendly and service was attentive. They have good food which was nice, definitely order their fries both were great. Unfortunately it took two attempts to cook my burger to the proper temperature and still came out wrong. I tried all their beer just to make sure I didn’t order the wrong thing and each one left me disappointed. Overall if you’re looking for a place for food give them a shot, but if you want great beer skip it and go check out Lua.

If you’re in Des Moines and looking for a spot that blends great beer, delicious food, and a welcoming atmosphere, Big Grove Brewing is a must-visit! We recently stopped in and were instantly impressed by their outdoor patio area — it’s covered and comfortable, making it the perfect place to relax whether the sun is shining or there’s a light drizzle. The space feels inviting and well thought-out, with plenty of seating and a laid-back vibe. I ordered one of their IPAs, and it did not disappoint — fresh, hoppy, and perfectly balanced. The beer menu is diverse enough to satisfy any taste, from hop lovers to those who prefer lighter or more unique brews. For food, I had the Butcher Board, which came with a flavorful sausage and a warm, soft pretzel. Everything was fresh, well-presented, and paired perfectly with my beer. The service was excellent — friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming without being overbearing. Staff members clearly take pride in making sure guests have a great experience. Between the excellent craft beer, tasty bites, and inviting patio space, Big Grove Brewing really nails the brewery experience. We’ll definitely be coming back and recommending it to friends and family!

Food was ok. I didn’t get a photo of the pretzel but unfortunately it tasted like buttered bread and was missing the signature pretzel flavor. Further, the menu is fairly limited and the entrees we chose (Cubano and the Mac n cheese) were just ok. Won’t be coming back here again.

Friendly service. Generous samples. Great variety of beers! The salad I had was really good. Will be back when we visit our kiddo at uni!

Very cute restaurant! Both the inside and outside areas have great vibes. There was a special called the apple pie bratwurst which was very interesting and I appreciate the creativity! The Cubano was just ok. Lots of great beer options!

Chicken restaurant
Fast food restaurant
KFC is a popular restaurant chain famous for its fried chicken buckets, combo meals, and side dishes. While some locations may have inconsistent food quality, most of the time the food is good if you request it fresh and are willing to wait. The staff are generally well-trained and friendly. Although some branches could improve on customer interaction, overall they offer clean premises and decent food compared to other nearby KFC outlets.
This is the only photo I got but it’s so good I could eat kfc all days… yummy 5/5 got big bucket
Quill S — Google review
The brand name is the only reason why it is not a 1 star. Bathroom was gross and looks like it’s been a good week since it’s been cleaned. The lobby was better but you could tell the employees didn’t care. Every table was dirty so had to clean off the one we wanted to sit down at in order to eat in-store. Chicken did not taste fresh but was edible. Mashed potatoes and mac were still good.

Really need to watch what you are getting charged for at the KFC on Southwest 9th in Des Moines. Multiple times I've been up there and they tried to just add things to my order without asking that I didn't order. Today I was there they and they just added things and upsized my meal. I didn't order and charged me about double what I should have paid. And then when you call them to let them know what's happening they won't answer their phone. So now I guess I have to make a trip back up there.

Food is a little better then other KFC in the area but they could be a little friendlier and interactive with the customers other then that clean and good

Buzzard Billy’s is a spacious and relaxed restaurant in Des Moines, offering Louisiana-inspired cuisine and a dedicated gluten-free menu. The restaurant is known for its Cajun-style dishes such as seafood jambalaya, Shrimp Creole, and breaded chicken. It's also one of the few places where you can savor farm-raised Louisiana alligator tail.
After being in downtown DSM for almost 5 years I have finally visited Buzzard Billy's! I ordered takeout from them when I moved to Iowa in 2020, but couldn't taste anything (COVID). Fast-forward to 2025, my friend takes me here for lunch and the food was so satisfying! It's Cajun-inspired fare. I got the Chicken Tchoupitoulas. It was so juicy and flavorful! What I love about Cajun food is the complex, smoky flavor profile with layers of savory spices. The heat isn't overpowering but a well-integrated component of the overall flavor. I wouldn't say this tasted like it was straight out of Louisiana, but they definitely incorporate my favorite parts of Cajun cuisine with more common American dishes. Plus, my Vegan and Gluten-free friend was able to eat a proper lunch here (with several modifications). This is a huge feat!

A quick walk from the Expo Center in downtown Des Moines! Great atmosphere! Food was not as flavorful, but I have a Southern palate, meaning I need less char and bland taste and more seasoning and fresher taste plus sweet tea. Probably great food if you're drinking, but I was there for brunch with teens. Busy day, so it was a long wait.
J ( — Google review
Was here for lunch during a conference and most of the patrons were also conference attendees. We were seated right away and the wait staff was friendly and timely. This has a huge menu so you could find anything you want to try, I had the blackened salmon salad. The salmon was good but the salad was pretty poor iceberg lettuce with shredded cheese, cucumber and tomatoes. It was an easy stop for us since it was close by and we sat in the deck in beautiful weather.

We grabbed a table towards the back. Just stopped in for a few drinks and to catch up with some friends we ran into in town. We were able to enjoy our time there. Noise level was medium, however this was right after we saw Adam Sandler. There were 6 of us, 3 had canned beer, and 3 had tap beer. Tap beer was good and cold. They also have a few games. I won a duck on my way out.

Completely random stop while out running errands.. walked in and super busy! Sat right down, food and drink within like 10 minutes.. AMAZING wings!! Got them plain with buffalo sauce on the side and would definitely recommend it! Got the side salad as well. It was very good sized for a side. Overall the waitress and food were a solid experience and will definitely be back!

Nestled in Windsor Heights, Little Brother is the delightful creation of Joe and Alex Tripp, who also run the renowned Harbinger. This charming diner has shifted its focus exclusively to brunch, offering a laid-back atmosphere that invites you to relax and savor your meal. The menu features an array of Jewish-inspired dishes that are sure to tantalize your taste buds.
Absolutely delicious. My wife and I have now gone a couple times and both times were spectacular. The “ soon to be famous” breakfast sandwich is amazing. The steamed egg is a very nice touch. The breakfast potatoes are to die for. Crunchy and seasoned perfectly and topped with fresh dill. Pancakes were some of the best I’ve ever had. Hashbrowns are incredibly crispy on the outside, and soft and delicious on the inside. Freshly ground coffee too, which is rare in Des Moines for a restaurant . Our waitress was incredibly sweet and on top of her game. But, this should come as no surprise, as we love Harbinger! 10000/10 recommend.

Delicious, made from scratch breakfast! Cutest restaurant in the metro serving breakfast and lunch. Does get busy during popular dining times but we were lucky to get right in at around 930a on Saturday. Come hungry because the portions are huge! Everything was cooked to perfection. The cinnamon roll is the best we have had and enormous! Dreaming about it still! Staff worked together and were friendly. They also offer alcoholic beverages that looked amazing but we enjoyed the fresh brewed coffee.
Karla C — Google review
Finally got around to trying this place. We were one of the only tables eating at the time. The atmosphere is interesting and the servers were amazing. The food was a little lacking, onion rings had great batter but way too much onion. The French toast was really dense and eggy, to the point it felt like a fried egg on the bottom of the french toast. The only saving grace was the brisket skillet. That was really good. I think I will try this place one more time but for breakfast.
Mahlon W — Google review
Loved coming here and trying their giant cinnamon roll! Excellent service from Chelsea, great atmosphere and vibe, also tried one of their mocktails “The Golden Ticket” which was excellent. This place is kid friendly without coming off as a Chuck E Cheese type place, but also seemed perfect for a morning out with girlfriends (which is why I was there). Will come again!
Rebecca C — Google review
Heard about this place from a family friend so we just had to try it. Very busy, we kind of waited a little while before they took our names to be seated. The atmosphere was cute and kind of retro in a way. Ordered a bowl of Matza Ball Soup and the Roast Beef and Cheddar sandwich. I asked for the soup first and actually got it last as I had to ask for it and they were still preparing it. The bowl is huge so if you are not really hungry order the cup. Soup was okay, not a lot of flavor and only one Matza ball and a lot of onion. The Roast Beef and Cheddar was good, the bun was phenomenal. My fries had a really good flavor to them but were cold, not warm but cold. Over all I would give this place a 4 out of ten as it is rather pricey!
Jason K — Google review
We tried out Little Brother for dinner last night because I had heard so many great reviews. Our experience was just ok. It's a really cute place. We were seated 5 minutes before happy hour ended, but our server first came by 2 minutes after it ended and said she couldn't get us HH pricing even though we were seated before it ended. Not a huge deal, but also not the best first impression. I had the reuben which was fine, average. I chose hash browns as my potato and they were cooked well, but SO bland, they couldn't have seasoned them at all. My husband had the classic burger which was also fine, but came with the pickles and onions he had requested they leave off right the middle of the sauce, so even after removing, the burger tasted like them. We watched the server write it down, so it was the kitchen's mistake, and the server was apologetic but didn't offer to make it right. The thing we liked best was the fries, very tasty! Overall, we weren't wowed, but might try it again, maybe for brunch.
Teri V — Google review
Not very impressed. Staff was wonderful and friendly. Atmosphere was super cute, but felt unfinished. Food looked beautiful, but had very little actual flavor. Everything we ordered from onion rings to a grilled cheese sandwich was just shy of being average. Food could have been 45% better for the prices they charge ($4 for a glass of country time is overboard) parking is aweful and it is not wheelchair friendly at all. Bathrooms where so small you could bairly turn around in them. If you are looking for a good meal skip this place. You could spend the Same amount on better food.
Melissa F — Google review
This is the neighborhood brunch place your neighborhood wishes it had. Approachable favorites, but executed so well. The short rib skillet was so tender and had incredible depth of flavor. The banana foster pancakes were really fun, but even just the pancake was made perfectly separate from the sauce. Latkes are exactly what you want them to be, with a real homemade applesauce. Also the cocktail menu was fun and inventive - celery soda in a Pimm’s was a nice touch. Go now, and come back later!

Visiting from out of town and we always look for a new unique spot to eat and enjoy the vibes. This patio is huge and in a quieter spot right off the downtown area. We stopped at this bar randomly in passing and had the best time ever. I can honestly say it was one of the best nights of my life. From the yummy apps, to the amazing tower drink, and the great staff, we just truly enjoyed ourselves and the cozy vibes. The food is really cheap and so are the drinks. Our 3L tower drink was $45 which included vodka and mixer choices like soda, purée, fruity flavors, and ice. They offer these with beer and other alcoholic beverages as well. Definitely recommend for a great night out.

After waiting for at least 10 minutes to even be acknowledged and seated, flagged down a server who said she’d be right back to seat us right away. The place was busy but not packed and this server was in no way running around with any sense of urgency (to be fair the bar staff were hustling!). Several more minutes passed and the server never came back. Our group of 4 decided to go elsewhere and saw the same server just as we were walking out. She offered to seat us but we were beyond wanting to spend anymore time there. Her explanation was, and I quote, “the little old Asian lady was supposed to seat you.” Definitely solidified our decision to eat elsewhere. Exile got our business and was great ✌️

The fries and funnel fries are amazing!!! Their chicken was not a hit. It had a pinch of season salt... My boyfriend took my leftover chicken to work and his coworkers assumed it was undercooked... I got the tenders and wings combo - both I took one bite and said nope. I don't like super dry meat and it makes me nauseous.

I found the fries to be delicious. Crispy and well seasoned. Chicken fingers were tender as hell. Only down side was they needed a little more seasoning. Once I dipped em in that Jerk sauce tho. Delicious.

I was exited to try this place for the first time, however I was dissatisfied to say the least, the buns that it came with was brunt, the fires were mediocre, however tho the potato salad was decently good
Az P — Google review
Our first time visiting this new place, this was also their first Saturday open. I had the chicken bacon ranch wrap and a draft beer. The wrap was quite large, tomato basil wrap. Cool, crispy lettuce and tomatoes and juicy warm chicken and bacon. I went with the fried chicken instead of the grilled, but you have the choice. The wrap was delicious, great flavor. My wife had the 3 chicken fingers combo. Instead of fries she went with the mac and cheese for an upcharge. She got a bottle of pop with the meal to take home and an ice water for no charge. Her sauce was the honey garlic. This was a sauce you could get smothered on the chicken or on the side for dipping. She said the chicken maybe needed a pinch of salt in the batter but that's a minimal issue, overall fantastic. The mac was good and creamy. So overall we had a great first visit and hope they continue to be open on Saturdays! We recommend Chicken Shack to anyone. Food came out quick and very friendly and attentive staff. Clean place!

The Chicken Shack is a complete joke. The chicken was dry, overcooked, and tasted like it had been sitting out for hours. The sides were cold and flavorless, the service was rude and slow, and the whole place was filthy. To make it worse, the prices are absurd for food this bad. Chicken Heat has made quite a name for itself since its humble beginnings as a food truck in 2021, quickly becoming the go-to spot for Nashville hot chicken enthusiasts. Now settled into a cozy brick-and-mortar location, this casual eatery continues to delight patrons with its mouthwatering fried chicken tenders and sandwiches, all generously slathered in your choice of sauce—from mild to the daring Carolina Reaper XXX.
Our first time there. Felicia greeted us with a warm smile and offered suggestions based on our preferred level of heat. We selected the Nashville Hot chicken sandwich, mild, and it was delicious. Crunchy and juicy with just the right amount of heat for us. And BIG! We ended up sharing a sandwich and took one home. The restaurant was clean and bright, prompt and friendly service - we'll definitely be back.

Hands down best chicken in town . When you walk in you are greeted with smiling faces and great music. Wait times do vary from time to time but it is 100% worth it. There is not one thing I don’t recommend on the menu. I enjoy the Nashville hot chicken sandwich, it is fried to perfection. Wings, tenders, sides all perfect . Dirty rice is the most different of all dirty rices I have tasted . Perfect flavor and great amount of meat . If you haven’t tried this place you definitely should!

The bar's aesthetic exudes a dark, Don Draper on holiday vibe that's perfect for unwinding any time of year.
This place has such a fun, clean, atmosphere with a great design vibe! Definitely a place I would like to sit and hang out longer on a date or out with friends. The drinks we had were phenomenal! It's rare to find a place with an upscale fun ambiance, and also have top of the line drinks, but this place hit it right on! They obviously only have a certain style of drinks with their tiki theme, but we found the drinks to be robust enough that they were fantastic even without being our go to style of cocktails! Definitely will come back!

Rebekkah was absolutely fantastic! She was the best bar tender I’ve had in so long! She made sure we had everything we needed. Checked on us multiple times and overall was just the sweetest person! Genuine and very hospitable!

28Iowa Craft Beer Tent

The Iowa Craft Beer Tent is a must-visit for beer enthusiasts at the Iowa State Fair. With a wide variety of locally brewed beverages, visitors can enjoy live music and a pleasant atmosphere. Despite being crowded at times, the tent offers an extensive selection of beers and ciders, making it a popular stop for fairgoers. Additionally, those interested in exploring local breweries can opt for an Iowa Brew Tour in cities like Des Moines, Iowa City, or Cedar Rapids.
My sister, cousin & I LOVE seeing your locations & stopping during RAGBRAI LI. Scenic & picturesque, with plenty of shade! Of course, there were so Many flavors of beer & cider! We always look forward to making time to stop :-)

So for some reason this year at the fair: 2025, all the selections seem to be candy-flavored beer. Cotton candy, mango raspberry / lemonade etc. I really like beer. I've liked it since I was 13. I don't want a fruity or gimmicky beer. When I go for a craft beer I want either a good IPA maybe a twist on local stout or a full-bodied ale maybe a smooth summer lager. As for the Beer Tent self itself, it's pretty loud in there. The combination of piped in music, and people partying. it's definitely a party atmosphere.

Came here during opening weekend of the fair. They were blasting music to the point where it was difficult to order a drink. Sample sizes aren’t available for every drink offered and there wasn’t enough seating. We’ve had good experiences here in the past but we’re really disappointed this year.
Emily W — Google review
Craft beer tent was a major disappointment this year. They were consistently sold out of all the "fair" beers. I was told at the bar that the beer supplier brings kegs in the morning and they sell out of the special beers very quickly each day. So why not deliver more of the most popular kinds throughout the day? Seems silly to miss out on all that revenue. Our party of 8 adults didn't stay long due to lack of supply.

They always have a huge selection of craft beer and are one of the best values at the Iowa State Fair. For those in the know, you can get 12 "tasters", which is about 3 "flights" for $30. $10 a flight is about what a brewery charges.

If you enjoy locally brewed beverages, this is the place to be at the Iowa State Fair. Lots of choices, and pleasant service. Live music on and off all day, and fans blowing if there is no breeze.

Discover the flavors of Cajun-spiced fried chicken at Krispy Krunchy Chicken located inside the Super Quick Liquor Store in West Des Moines. Whether you prefer to order by the piece, as tenders, or in a sandwich, each serving is infused with a mild Cajun marinade and coated with custom breading. While some may be familiar with their location inside gas stations, this particular outlet is situated within a liquor store.
We have one of these back home in Virginia. Ours is situated in a gas station. This one is inside a liquor store. I was totally blown away by how good the chicken was at my home location and wanted to compare. I am happy to report that this place exceeded all of my expectations! Sky was behind the counter tonight. He was great! He gave us some samples while we waited. They make the chicken fresh, and it's worth the wait! I promise you. The chicken was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, flavorful, and perfectly spiced! I can honestly say that this is my favorite fried chicken, ever! The biscuits, wedges, and mac & cheese were also delicious! Some people may be put-off by its location but, looks are deceiving. Try it for yourself!!! Also, our 3-piece breast and wing combo with biscuit and side, and 3-piece tender combo with biscuit and side was ~$18. Super cheap and we each got two meals out of each Krunch Box. You do the math!
Melinda — Google review
My husband wanted 2 breasts of chicken but I did not see individual pieces on the menu... All I saw was a 12 piece. So I ordered it and did not get one breast. very disappointing.
Julia H — Google review
Crispy on the outside (you can hear it), juicy on the inside. It was GOOD. Price was reasonable too. Buffalo sauce wasn't great.

Food made fresh and very customer service friendly! We need you on the Southside of Des Moines!
Tabitha L — Google review
First the restaurant looked clean and bright. Second customer service wasn't welcoming. We ordered Mexican food. Neither of them wore gloves as they handled the food. The guy grabbed the dough, then two handfuls of cheese, and the lady drop the cup lid in the salsa and picked it out with her fingers and put it on my cup of salsa(no gloves). Maybe they normally wear gloves but at that moment they did not. And the food... Well, we will not be returning.

I went there because it was new . Name says it’s Krispy Krunchy so I thought it would be kind of like Popeyes, nope it wasn’t had barely any coating and didn’t taste right either. I don’t know if the cook chicken in fish grease or if some how a piece of fish got cooked in the chicken grease. I don’t think I’ll be going back there.
