Hiking Trails
Great Island Trail, situated in Wellfleet near Provincetown, is a captivating Cape Cod hiking experience that spans 3.9-8.8 miles. The trail winds through diverse landscapes including forests, marshes, and dunes. Accessible via Route 6 and East Commercial Street, the trail culminates at Great Beach where hikers can enjoy a refreshing swim in the ocean.
One of The Cape’s true gems. Great Island is absolutely breathtaking. A beautiful quiet and serene getaway with many spectacular vistas of both the harbor and the bay. I usually take my time and hike the entire trail from the shore through the woods making my way to Jeremy Point and making my way back along the glorious beach. This trail can also be done entirely along the shore where you can enjoy the marine life while also looking up at the majestic cliffs. Wildlife is abundant and you never know what you might see. I’m 74 years old and I do this trail several times a year. Each time results in a new experience. If you love the outside give it a shot.

In May: It's amazing. I had the place to myself. Went all the way to Jeremy Point. The only bad thing is all of the ticks in the off-beach areas. SO. MANY. TICKS. They're everywhere! You can see them hanging out at the top of blades of grass.
James S — Google review
If you like impressionists masterpiece, you should probably take a hike here (too) - very likely I have made that assertion already, for somewhere else that I have visited, but still I must reiterate. I have visited here twice, one in early March (definitely winter), and one in late May (I would say spring). Within couple few months of time, everything all the sudden has been tainted with greenness - including the grasses and the sand dunes. It's fun to see how things have changed (except for the landscape, AND the wind). Landscape aside, I simply feel it is a very interesting experience, driving along that one-lane bridge when close to the trail lot. Anyway, I'm putting some spring photos that I took just now, yet I'd like to leave you some room to imagine a (much) harsher trip I did earlier, when it was still winter.

We visited on a Tuesday morning in mid-June 2025. It was a large parking lot at the trail head. There were 2 other cars there when we arrived around 7:30AM. There were a number of trail head signs and 2 porta johns in the parking lot. It's a short walk out of the forest and to the water. There were tons of mosquitos on this trail but once you got out to the water area the numbers dropped and that may have been also because of the breeze without the trees. Make sure you have the right shoes for the hike as it gets really sandy and can get quite wet depending on tide and weather. It was an overcast day for us and it started to sprinkle a bit when we were coming back in. We decided it was too risky with the weather to do the entire hike out to the point so we only hiked to the beach and then walked all the way down until the first point we could cut left back to the sound side. Most the area was roped off for nesting birds but clear markers. The opening we saw wasn't until we got to the actual great island. This is where we went over and were greeted by a GIANT hill. I'm not sure if my pictures do it justice. I've never seen a sand dune quite like it before. I'm not even sure if it's a sand dune. It was made mostly of sand. We decided to climb up to the top to take a picture. This was a feat but totally worth it. After a few pictures we hiked back down and crossed on the more marshy sound side to get back to the parking lot. It would've been cool to go all the way but we were glad we turned around as it started to sprinkle on our way back and we picked up speed. We would most definitely come back to try this trail again if we visited Cape Cod National Seashore. We thought of this a a sneak peak or trail hike. Didn't see any really cool wildlife really but we saw seal warning signs.
David L — Google review
A beautiful (mostly beach) hike that shows the simple wild side to Cape Cod Bay-side beaches. I encountered some deep sand that makes for strenuous walking and narrow paths with tall beach grass encroaching. I admit I was concerned about ticks, but didn't find any on me. This hike doesn't have any appreciable elevation gain, but I consider it moderate due to the soft sand in many areas. Pick a cool breezy day to hike this, wear a hat and sunscreen, and bring water. Enjoy!
Mikel O — Google review
Nice trails with lots of sand. You don't need to do the whole trail if you don't want to. It is a very beautiful area! Depending on where you want to go, you may get a bit wet in certain sections.
Joshua — Google review
Great trails and beautiful area. Dog owners beware, there have been a lot of dead birds on the west beach/side. But I love visiting this area a lot!
Maddalyn A — Google review
There were many great reviews for this trail and I csn definitely understand why. The trail is simply breathtaking. There's a nice balance between trees and forest vistas vs the beach and ocean. The hike through sand is definitely harder than it sounds and looks. The hike is about 4 to 9 miles give or take depending which trail you follow. We took the shorter trail as we were with novice hikers. I will definitely be back to hike the longer trail next time.

The Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, located on Cape Cod, offers a diverse natural experience with woodlands, beach, heath, and salt marshes. Visitors can explore five miles of trails and boardwalks through various habitats such as woodlands, tidal marshes, coastal sand plains, and freshwater ponds.
We were really lucky to come across this place while driving by. It’s just 5 miles of trails, but they’re all super peaceful. We just walked around, enjoying the nature and the birds singing. There’s also a great spot by the shore with a beautiful view. We spent a lot of time just walking along the beach, checking out the shells in the sand. Definitely a really cool place. Hope we can come back sometime

Def recommend stopping by and walking the trails. The staff were super helpful and kind. The osprey nest was amazing to see. My child and I were able to walk about 2 miles of the trails together and it didn’t disappoint either of us. Def wear your sunblock and bug spray!

We visited on a late Sunday afternoon in mid-June 2025. There were plenty of spaces when we visited. There are a good number of trees as well if you're looking for a shady spot. It is a little bit of a walk to the visitor center from the parking spots. The parking lot was packed gravel and dirt. It was well maintained. There are ADA spots closer to main entrance. We arrived around 4PM and the Nature Center closed at 5PM. You can still stay in the park until dusk and there is a side exit you can take. I'm not sure if there are bathrooms available after the Nature Center closes however. The sign says to pay entrance fee using money pipe next to kiosk signs and map when building is closed. It's $8/adult, $5 (65+) and $3 (2-12yr old). members are free. There are a number of FREE admission for different groups and memberships as well. The Nature Center itself was great and much bigger than expected. When you walk in directly in front of you in the info desk. All the staff were super helpful and told us exactly what we should try and do and answered all of our questions. To the right is the gift shop which had a pretty nice selection but kind of generic items. To the left is the hallway to all the exhibits. This area was a lot bigger than I expected. They had a number of live animals in aquariums and tanks. Kids spent 15-20 mins in here looking around but we wanted to get on the trail. We took the trail straight to Goose Pond and crossed the bridge/boardwalk over and continued to the Try Island Trail. But we just stayed left and walked all the way out on the boardwalks. It does get really sandy so be prepared with the right shoes or be okay with sand in your shoes or going barefoot. There were a few mosquitos here and there but I wouldn't say unbearable. If you kept moving, you were fine. Might be a different story if you were here birdwatching and stayed in one spot for awhile. There were also a ton a little fiddler crabs i think. Kids had fun watching them scurry away as we walked by. It was very photogenic and picturesque especially cause we only ran into 3 or 4 groups the entire time we were there and it was a weekend. Overall a great place to take a walk. If we lived nearby we would probably have a membership here. If you're just visiting, it's a great way to spend maybe half a day. We only had about an hour total so we couldn't explore much more unfortunately. I bet sunset here would've been amazing.
David L — Google review
Very accessible for different age groups and scenic trails. Visitor center has wonderful creatures in aquariums and helpful staff. The day we went in October it was quite windy and cold by the water’s edge but we still enjoyed our walks. No dogs allowed as it is a bird sanctuary but at the time of day we went we saw almost no birds. We expected to see at a minimum sea birds and ducks but we did not.
Jennifer L — Google review
Absolutely gorgeous place! A variety of trails will take you past salt marshes, a bay-side beach, and coastalpine forest. They have a wonderful Discovery center for all ages, a lovely pollinator garden, and a well stocked gift shop. A fun "bonus" is watching the Fiddler Crabs scurry about along the Boardwalk trail... Be mindful of High Tide because the boardwalk goes under water.
C C — Google review
Cool place for family and kids! Theres lots of different trials. The views are beautiful. Very interesting to walk around during low tide where you'll see tons of crabs and mussels. Theres a gift shop along with an indoor area with fish tanks.

Enjoyed an easy morning walk at low tide - so many fiddler crabs and mermaid’s purses! They kind ladies at the front desk offered a scavenger hunt/bingo to keep my 3 year old son engaged.

Explore the Dune Shacks Trail in Provincetown, Massachusetts, a 2.4-mile loop that winds through sand dunes and coastal landscapes within the Cape Cod National Seashore. The trail is named after 19 scattered shacks with a rich history of inspiring famous writers and artists. These shacks are now offered as residences for artists and writers through lottery and jury selections, making it a special experience to stay there.
Amazing hike with great views! The trail is difficult but not terrible. The dune trail is 2 miles total out-and-back. The path is well marked with footprints. I recommend wearing sunscreen and bug spray if you want to spend time at the beach due to biting flies. The beach is quiet and the water is refreshing! Park along rt. 6 and you will be fine wearing sandals or shoes. I wore crocs, by boyfriend wore socks and sneakers.
Sam L — Google review
A fantastic hike! Up and down dunes in the sand but our five and six year old were able to do it. Beautiful views. Great vibes! Be smart and bring water if you plan to hike to the beach and back. About 2 mi round trip.
Kaitlin T — Google review
Second time me and my husband have come here for sunset and were never disappointed! We park off a main road and walk up the steep hill and then we we get to the top that's when we stop. We've never gone through the whole trail and we have never gone to the other side to see the beach either. It's just a nice relaxing and beautiful time at sunset!
ELOCIN R — Google review
Great work out the whole trail is sand and the dunes are steep. Bring water. Apply sun screen,no shade. Wear good shoes, sand is probably hot in summer. Limited parking. No bathrooms. Very beautiful!! Pictures can't show true beauty of this trail!
Sue D — Google review
Great hiking experience Try your best to stay on the trial. We had an overcast weather in 70s and it was perfect. Make sure to hydrate on the way. Hot summer days must feel like in a desert
Ania J — Google review
Quintessential cape cod hike. About 1 mile up and down through sand dunes to the ocean. There are 3 designated spots and street parking. Tough hike for kids even with it being less than 2 miles RT
David H — Google review
This was an awesome trail! Park along the street. Difficult hike due to the entire thing being in sand and dunes are steep, especially at the start. But worth the views and seeing the shacks. You can bring dogs but must be on leash.
Amelia T — Google review
Absolutely beautiful! Bring lots of water, well charged phone and a good sense of direction. This is a challenge to hike at times but so worth it. Getting to the other side were seals. The sand is pristine and I love that everyone was respectful and didn't litter. The opening is along the road and there's an opening that starts you on your journey

Nestled within Cape Cod National Seashore, the Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail provides a serene escape from the coastal scenery. The trail winds through shaded pine and oak forests, featuring a rare grove of endangered Atlantic white cedars. A wooden boardwalk allows visitors to explore the swamp ecosystem, attracting birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts due to its diverse bird population. The trail offers a peaceful retreat in fall, sheltered from wind with sunlight filtering through the enchanting swamp.
Fun little trail, nothing too challenging but not wheelchair accessible, at least that I saw. Good for killing an hour or two. The boardwalk is rather enchanting, its a quiet peaceful walk with some seats to sit and relax. It’s also FREE!
Cougar P — Google review
One of our favorite places on the lower cape. Parking is free and trails very easy. Some bugs and ticks so I would definitely spray yourself.
Alexandria B — Google review
Been wanting to walk this trail for the longest time. Definitely worth the wait! Easy trail. Beautiful scenery.
Craig M — Google review
A lovely walk through the woods. Worth the hike if you’re in the area.
Kaleb H — Google review
It’s a nice short walk with a lot of shaded area. However, the map is too inaccurate! From the map, it looks like it’s easy to follow but we got lost 2 times. From the map, it looks like before you get to the little circle, there are two roads ahead. But there are three roads. What’s worse is that there’s no sign at that area to tell you where to go along the trail (the only sign they have is useless). So we got lost 2 times. Eventually, we had to use google map to know we got lost for the first time and we were lucky to ask the local to guide us to get out for the second time. From the entrance, the left road has a bit up and down hills and the right road is mostly flat.
WDannie — Google review
Super Lovely place to bring children for a walk. Shady and cooler on a hot summer day, except for the last leg which is a more sandy path and uphill. I carried my 30 lb son in that part and was huffing it!
Suzanne V — Google review
Easy walk with picturesque views. Highly recommended!
Pangus H — Google review
This is one of my favorite places to reconnect with nature in the Fall. On windy days it's protected from the wind and sunlight filters through the swamp in an enchanting way. Siting peacefully on one of the benches under the overhanging trees you can hear the forest around you echoing and you can smell the swamp as the leaves gather around you, it's easy to lose time if you allow it to go. For those having trouble locating the trail it's located in the Marconi overlook parking lot just off Rt.6.

Fort Hill Trail is a 1-mile loop located in the Eastham section of the National Seashore. The trail offers stunning views of Nauset Marsh and the Atlantic Ocean, making it a popular spot for birders and outdoor enthusiasts. Hikers can expect to see native wildlife and enjoy the beautiful natural landscape along this slightly strenuous and hilly trail.
This is a beautiful spot high on a hill overlooking the water. I can't recommend that you visit this spot highly enough. And there are plenty of trails to hike throughout this beautiful spot. I highly recommend that you at least go and look at the view as it's just spectacular.
Diane J — Google review
Very nice place for a hike! It might be a bit boring in the winter, as if you were wondering about on a heath - but that's when I visited it the first time. When it enters into the spring/summer (whatever), things really change - everything turning greenish. In this, you'll find a vast coverage of grasses, the beach view, and much more. I saw rabbits, deers, singing birds, and whatever flowers on a rainy late spring/early summer day.
Wanyu H — Google review
Great place to walk and beautiful sights. It is not a very difficult trail and there is a good bit of parking.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Fort Hill Trail – A Hidden Gem in Cape Cod What an incredible experience! We visited Fort Hill Trail today and were absolutely enchanted by its natural beauty. The air was crisp and refreshing, the landscape pristine, and the views—simply breathtaking. It’s a peaceful, uncrowded spot that offers everything from scenic ocean overlooks to quiet trails perfect for walking, relaxing, or even kayaking nearby. The gentle breeze and coastal charm made it feel like a true escape from the everyday. Highly recommended for anyone seeking tranquility, nature, and a touch of Cape Cod magic.

This is a nice little hiking place in the Orleans. I would definitely recommend everyone to go for a walk twice a week, as it is surrounded with nature, beach side, trees, old historical rocks. I would suggest not to bring any pets cuz it's not allowed. There is one restroom next to the starting point at the lake. There is a swamp trail. Loved this one. Go take a walk with nature once in a while.
Priyabrata D — Google review
NO PETS! except if you have pets on leash depending on which sign you read. We brought our dog, planned to walk around the loop and saw it was a “Pet Free” park. BUT, observed several people with their dogs and signage indication that one could walk their dog… Beautiful park though. Well maintained boardwalk except for a recent hole from a fallen branch. Recommendations- 1- please update all signs to reflect whichever policy it is (pets or no pets) 2- ensure that websites and google maps identifies that this is a non pet friendly trail. 3- put some signs up letting folks know there is a giant hole in the boardwalk… Thanks NPS.

Beautiful. Simply beautiful. I love reading about the history of the area and seeing the sharpening stone. There is a reason Champlain looked over the land with awe. Definitely go here. Small parking but free so that is pretty awesome. There is a picnic table under a gazebo so could bring a lunch. No guarantees it isn’t taken but it was empty the day we were there.

Morris Island Loop Trail Access is a scenic trail that starts at the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge visitor center. The sandy, pine-lined path leads to a beautiful beach where visitors can spot plovers and pipers. It's important to note that pets are not allowed on the trail during nesting season. The route may be submerged at high tide, so it's best to hike during low tide.
The trail is absolutely great…. It was literally the best trail on Cape Cod for us. What a beautiful place… we saw seals 🦭 lots of birds 🐦 and walked around the peninsula, which was fun. You can take your dog from September 15th to May.

Beautiful . Morning walk, it was at low tide. You could walk as long or as little as you liked. Everyone, ages 8 to 74, loved it!

Short trail to a gorgeous beach, one of the nicest on the Cape. Wear water shoes for the marsh, skip the wagon and stroller, and ignore the “private” signs, the public seashore has right-of-way access. Park at the wildlife refuge center, walk about a quarter mile through the development to the trailhead. Please be respectful of the neighborhood! The trail is a short downhill through the woods to the beginning of a loop. The left trail can get washed out at high tide, go right if you forgot to check.

Cape Cod National Seashore spans over 40 miles and 40,000 acres of dune-filled beaches, salt marshes, and hiking and cycling paths. Camping is limited to self-contained, off-road vehicles with a permit. The park features six swimming beaches with lifeguards in the summer, as well as marshes, cranberry bogs, and lighthouses. President John F. Kennedy designated this area as a national park in 1961.
Cape Cod National Seashore is hard to avoid when visiting Cape Cod. The park is rich with rich with ecological and historical significance. The history is presented in the two main visitor centers and across the many trails and beaches at the park. The beaches are all very well maintained and the trails are too. I quite liked the dune shacks trail and the salt pond trails. I recommend bug spray and sunscreen for both! Some areas charge fees during the summer.
Sam L — Google review
There are several beautiful sand beaches with bath and changing rooms. On at least one beach there is an area that you can drive on with a permit. I saw several campers parked on the beach. We saw some seals frolicking in the water but no great white sharks.

Large National Seashore welcomes you with beautiful ocean views and many beach landscapes.Lighthouses and more are available for you to enjoy. We enjoyed seeing the "Cape Cod potato chips" lighthouse and observing the seals in the waters near Nauset light. Facilities provided include restrooms and parking. The warnings about the sharks are no joke.

My mother and I visited Cape Cod National Seashore on the whole day of Wednesday, October 1st. Sadly, it was the same day as the government shutdown. All both two visitor centers, the restrooms, and the buildings are closed. Except the restrooms by Salt Pond Visitor Center was opened after we arrived nearby Cape Cod National Seashore Entrance. And we had to go explore the Cape Cod National Seashore outside. We had a lot of good time to see a few places in a beautiful day. We walked .8 mile on two different trails, Buttonbush Trail Loop and Marconi Beach Walk. Buttonbush Trail is located nearby Salt Pond Visitor Center. Many different plants and trees we walked through. Not many people have walked past us. Marconi Beach is not far away from Salt Pond Visitor Center. It was crazy and strong winds. Saw strong waves crashing the beach. But it was so peaceful to see when we were taking a stand and watch. We saw all three different lighthouses; Nauset Light, Three Sisters Lighthouses and Highland Light. It was very cool to see the real lighthouses. And it’s also closed. And we went to see Herring Cove Beach that was more peaceful to see the beach. The winds and the clouds were gone before us arrived. I took a short walk by the water. It’s a good therapy to walk. And I found a couple of cool detailed rocks. (I dropped off where I found afterwards.) It’s already checked off my bucket list. ❤️
Cody B — Google review
Cape Cod National Seashore is a beautiful and expansive stretch of coastline with plenty of ways to explore. There are multiple access points to the beach, spots to learn about the area’s history through interpretive signs, scenic trails for hiking or biking, and iconic lighthouses to visit. The beach itself is calm in terms of crowds, which makes it a peaceful place to enjoy the sound of the waves — though the surf can be quite rough, so be cautious if you’re planning to swim. The sand is soft and clean, but we didn’t come across any seashells (maybe they’re more common in other seasons). The highlight for us was spotting many seals playing in the water — such a treat! Plenty of parking makes it easy to explore different sections of this beautiful national seashore.

Cape Cod is a beautiful place to visit with its sandy beaches, charming towns, and fresh seafood. It’s perfect for a summer getaway, whether you enjoy relaxing on the shore, biking the trails, or exploring small shops and lighthouses.

I love the Cape Cod National Seashore because it feels so beautifully preserved. My favorite part was exploring the Province Lands area; the rolling sandscape and dune shacks are incredible. If you go, start at the Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham for a great overview of the history and wildlife. The dramatic overlooks offer unbeatable views. It’s a perfect place to spend a whole day, just be sure to bring layers.

Nature & Parks
Nickerson State Park is a sprawling 1900-acre woodland retreat that offers a variety of outdoor activities. The park features over 400 campsites, including options for yurt and group camping, as well as amenities such as an amphitheater, hiking trails, and an eight-mile bike path that connects to the Cape Cod Rail Trail. Visitors can enjoy swimming and canoeing at Flax and Cliff Ponds, bird watching or fishing at Higgins Pond, and take part in seasonal interpretive programs.
We chose to go camping here on a Sunday evening and reserved Area 2, which is right next to the large and peaceful Flax Pond. It was just a two-minute walk from our individual tent site down a quiet path to the water. At the lakeside, you can enjoy paddleboarding or kayaking, with rentals available on-site. The camping atmosphere was wonderful—very quiet at night, with clear views of the stars and even the Milky Way. It was an unforgettable experience, and we’re already thinking about coming back.

Very nice place and if you're a resident of Massachusetts it's only $22 a night. Some sites larger than others, some sites clear than others, some sites are more level than others. If you plan on bringing a camper bring some leveling blocks you never know if you're going to get a completely flat sight but for the most part it always works out. Constant supervision by the rangers. They are always available. Fairly strict on who can come in and come out. Really nice hiking biking swimming. Multiple kettle ponds. Very clear and clean water Sandy beaches.

Nickerson was my first camping experience and it was absolutely wonderful. Now four years into it and I still feel the same way. It makes you feel like you’re in a secluded world of your own while giving you easy local access to the lovely things Cape Cod has to offer.

Nickerson State Park ... what a dreamy place. It's been our second year pitching a tent in August and I cannot express adequately how peaceful and quiet it feels despite full occupancy. Where else on Cape Cod do you get that in the middle of summer? The ponds are the centerpiece, whether you're swimming, paddling or sailing. The water temperatures are moderate compared to the ocean, great for kids. The scent of pine trees and sweet pepperbush is natural aromatherapy and incredibly soothing. Hiking and bicycling trails are fabulous and well maintained. The park offers programming (kids, education, nature) you should consider making use of. Be sure to get your reservation in time, it fills fast!

We loved our stay at Nickerson! We had a group site in area 3. Site 102 was really nice and flat with a mixture of shade and sun. We had room for 4 tents and a screen room. We appreciated it having three picnic tables. There was a great spot for our hammock. Flax pond was beautiful and clean. Despite having a lot of activity on the pond, it never felt crowded. We brought our bikes, which is a must in this area. The biking was a lot of fun and we had everybody doing it from age eight and up. I can't wait to book again for next summer!

Nice campground ⛺️ just watch out for ticks. Be prepared with deet, and permethrin. The ponds are very nice with warm and clear water in the summer. The showers have warm water.

Always a great place to visit, we go to the beach at Flax Pond to swim and picnic all day and have been going there for decades, a great family spot!
Bob M — Google review
We've been going here on and off for years. It's a great place to stay but there are issues. They need to rate how level a site is as they are all over the place. Which brings us to the second issue. The. State needs to invest in the park. Our bathroom building was in severe need of repair on the outside. And they could spend some money on leveling the sites. I realize they want to make it a rustic experience but having a level spot to set up your tent/trailer/camper doesn't detract from that. And finally, let's talk about fees. The park/State is non-resident unfriendly. With what they charge per night, I can stay three nights next to the ocean and beach in MD, and use their State senior pass to do it, and I'm from CT. I still recommend the place, but they can do better.

What a great find. There is an all access path that is fairly short but very nice with great views. Cost 5$ Especially in butterfly season don’t miss the mosaic garden to see all the various butterflies Do bring bug spray especially if bugs like you! One of our favorite Cape beaches. I'm almost reluctant to share it at the risk of the word getting out. Low tide opens plenty of shoreline to explore or sunbathe without being on top of others. High tide is a whole different story but a great time to cast a line for strippers. Parking is limited near the beach but plenty available for a fee at the Mass Audubon Long Pasture site. Picturesque views of Barnstable Bay and lighthouse and the far end of Sandy Neck Beach. After a great beach day, head next door to Millway Beach for a sunset and then Mattakeese for dinner, drinks, and live music (see my reviews for those two. Neither will disappoint.) If you go, bring your common sense and respect others and the beauty of our great country and carry out your own trash, give space to others on the beach, and enjoy without impacting others. Don't make me regret sharing the secret of this little gem.

The Red Maple Swamp Trail is a popular walking trail on Cape Cod known for its stunning autumn foliage. It's a half-hour walk that offers big rewards in terms of natural beauty. Located in the Eastham section of the National Seashore, this trail features an elevated boardwalk over the Red Maple Swamp and offers glorious views of the surrounding woodlands, making it a favorite spot for hikers and nature enthusiasts.
The parking for the red maple swamp trail is very limited. Be sure to go early. The Red Maple trail is located within the fort hill trail area. Most of the hike is on a Boardwalk so it is flat and easy to walk. The trail was maybe a little more than 1 mile and connects to other trails if you wanted a longer hike. The trail is beautiful. Definitely take your time and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Utter silence in nature! So peaceful. Itis a great walk, just over a mile. I suspect that it may be buggy in the gear of summer dues to standing swampy water. We loved it in early spring though and look forward to returning.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon in mid-June 2025. The trail head doesn't have very many parking spots along the side of the road. We weren't sure if we could park down by the water where the boat launch was so we stuck closer to the trail head. There are pit toilets here and the trail forks. We decided to go right on the board walk and go around and tie it into the Fort Hill Trail. Both together isn't very long and at a leisurely stroll while taking photos as well it took us about 1 hr. There was also a small parking lot at the Fort Hill Trail Head and at the Fort Hill Overlook. The trail was relatively short and had a lot of different elements and changing scenery so it kept our ADHD youngest one entertained with out much complaints. Great for beginners. Overall we'd probably do this again if we were in the area. It was short and interesting. There are a lot of other trails we could do but this one was also close to the salt pond visitor center.
David L — Google review
Well maintained trails and nice boardwalk. We visited after a rainstorm and it was quite stunning, but it is a very busy trail!! We walked on the edge of the salt March and had to turn back due to knee high water. It can be quite muddy so don't wear your favorite sneakers! Modern facilities near Hemenway Landing. No picnic area.
Amy S — Google review
Beautiful, mostly shaded, fully elevated and trex decked pathway makes a comfortable, short, and enjoyable walk. You can start at the boat launch side and do a full loop going from Red Maple Swamp Trail to the Penniman House to a trail behind the house that leads to the lookout and from there to Indian Rock (via Fort Hill Trail) and back to the start.

The Pamet Cranberry Bog Trail in Truro is a delightful walking path that offers an easy yet rewarding experience for nature lovers. Spanning 1.5 miles, this loop trail meanders through a picturesque working cranberry bog, allowing visitors to witness the fascinating process of cranberry farming up close. As you stroll along, you'll be treated to vibrant views of ripening red berries and can soak in the rich history behind this beloved New England fruit.
A great leisure hike to enjoy the cape cod seashore. The start of the trial is located across the street from the parking lot. We saw so many varieties of mushroom on our hike. It was so peaceful and relaxing. We didn't see anyone else on the trail. The hike was easy. Majority of the trail is flat with a few ascents and descents. The trail eventually leads to the beach. Definitely worth the time to explore the beauty of this area.

We visited on a Monday afternoon in mid-June 2025. There is a small parking lot to the right around the corner if you use the trailhead marker on Google. The lot had 2 other cars in it when we arrived. There were maybe 10 spots total depending how the cars park. There are no lines or anything and it's compact dirt. The trail head sign is here but you follow a short walk through the woods here and back onto the main road and the trail starts on the other side of the road up a small set of stairs. The first fork you get to has 2 summit options, East and West. We decided to hike up tot he East Summit and the view was amazing on top of the hill. There are no trees up there so you can see really far out and to the water. There is also some kiosks up there with info as well as a trek bench you can sit and enjoy the view. Like I said there are no trees so there is no shade either. We sat for a min and took some pictures and continued on our way. Back to the intersection we wanted to hike to the Bog House. The trail can be a bit sandy as well so keep in mind what kind of shoes you have brought. We were all wearing closed toe keen water shoes. The Bog house was pretty cool. Many of the windows were broken. Probably immature kids/adults throwing rocks at them. Also as you'd expect there were many mosquitos here. So we stopped for a min for some pictures only and then back on the trail to the parking lot. We did notice that there must be folks using motor bikes on the trail which I don't think is allowed but we saw a number of really think tire tracks. I guess it could've been e-bikes. But I don't think bikes at all were allowed on the trail. These were all marked as "walking trails" and they are fairly narrow in many places. Overall a fun little hike. Not sure we'd come back and do this exact one again but it was worth the first visit. There are so many other trails on Cape Cod National Seashore, we'd want to try them all. Although we did not hike all the way out to the Overlook. So maybe we'd come back to try that one.
David L — Google review
Four stars for the first part of the trail that has great views of the ocean. 0 stars for the overlook trail- unfortunately it is very overgrown and full of mosquitos. You can’t actually see anything at the actual overlook, the benches and view has overgrown so not worth the walk!

Nice place for a walk. It wasn’t busy when we went. There’s lots of tree cover to escape a blazing summer sun. People were fishing off a bridge (or maybe lowering crab pots, we didn’t look closely). But it’s really easy to get to, and if you walk around the reservoir, you’ll connect to the rail trail. There’s nothing particularly amazing about it, but it’s nice to see some land preserved for nothing but walking around.

Great spot for a trail walk/run, enjoy the nature & beauty of this preserved area on Cape. Great for bird lovers, I've seen: swans, osprey, herons, hawks and I wouldn't doubt there might be an eagle in the area with the large ponds and active herring run. I stumbled upon this spot off of the bike path. It's usually very quiet, only pass by a few people while I'm there. Dog friendly, just make sure to clean up after them, keep them away from the waterfowl and be aware of the potential encounter with a coyote. I've never had a run in while walking my dogs, only when running solo. It's technically their home so...try to stay calm, don't approach them, if you have a small child or dog carry them and make sure to be aware of your surroundings. I would recommend that you avoid visiting at dawn/dusk - it was early afternoon when I had my encounter in the spring, think I might have been unintentionally getting too close to the den that potentially had a recent litter of coyote pups. I didn't feel threatened or like I was about to be attacked it was just closely monitoring me from a small distance until I was out of the area.

This is a great park which me and my family have walked in for as long as we’ve lived on the cape. The forest is varied and there are ponds and other wetlands which provide perfect habitat for wildlife. The park is big enough that you can have a unique experience each time while being able to be away from other people. The only problem I have is that it is very poorly marked. Once you are out there, it is hard to find your way back on a different trail than you came on, since it is unclear which trails and roads lead where. Don’t see this as a deterrent, though, just proceed with caution. Overall, I would highly recommend this park, but make sure to take a picture of the map at the beginning of the trail so you can refer to it later!

Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen is located on the former grounds of a historic glass factory in Sandwich. The nature center features walking paths through gardens, wildflower plots, and protected land, including the famous briar patch from Thornton Burgess' Peter Rabbit stories. Visitors can explore the 57-acre conservation area and then visit the historic Green Briar Jam Kitchen, which dates back to 1903.
Absolutely gorgeous garden and museum to visit. I visited during the Hydrangea Garden Tour. I'm so happy I was able to visit this spot. The gift shop is awesome, and the lady there was so helpful, and she helped me pick out the next book I am going to be reading, which is all about Thorton Burgess. I can't wait to start it. The garden is absolutely beautiful, and I love how the trails have the storybook along the path. Great place to go with the whole family. Definitely recommend stopping by here.

Really enjoyable experience at the Jam Day event!!! So peaceful, and the jam was phenomenal! I love the library and history room too!

We went on a Saturday morning. This is a nice area for small, quiet gatherings to sit in the open and admire nature. There are two areas in which you can sit by the water and watch the turtles. They have a library and a story time for kids along with a craft area (we were not there for that, and it has a fee). There are opportunities to make your own jam in an old-fashioned kitchen. However, it requires registration and scheduling. The gift shop features many unique items relative to the author, Thomas Burgess, of the Peter Cottontail stories. No cash is accepted for purchases, and there were issues with their "Square" credit card reader.

Wonderful flower and butterfly garden. Bookshop and store are interesting and amazing. Maria, the Docent, was helpful and kind. She has the best historical stories about Peter Rabbit's author and keepers of the land for this museum.

A really fun activity to do with a young one. My 8 year old really enjoyed making her own jam and having mom as a helper. We ended up with 6+ jars of delicious jam and treasured memories.

This place was so cute and such a nice stop while in Sandwhich. The garden, pond and wildflowers were so pretty and made for very nice photo spots. The jam and other goods from the mercantile were great. 100% recommend the wildflower and blueberry whipped honeys! Would recommend for groups and people of all ages :)

Very cute indoor play room area for toddlers / young kids, $7 fee per kid, no time limit. Parents are free. Small hiking trail outside, very short but cute. Little pond out back too. Turtles and rabbits on display inside in a few enclosures. Worth a visit if you have a young one! They also have two clean restrooms as well.

"The Little Sandwich Shop" is a charming eatery located in Hyannis/Barnstable, part of the Upper Cape region. It offers a variety of hot and cold subs, sandwiches, gyros, burgers, wraps, and weekly specials that are highly recommended by patrons. The shop is known for its fantastic crinkle cut French fries and fresh, tasty food made with pride. Customers can enjoy their meals at a few outdoor tables or opt for takeout to savor by the scenic Hyannis harbor.
Stopped here for a quick bite at noon, and it was easy to order and the staff were friendly. I ordered a special, the Devil's Revenge. This was a spicy burger that hit the spot. In New England, it can be hard to find good spice, but this was solid. Don't sleep on their specials menu.

Came here for a quick bite and the food here was great!! Sandwich sizes were quiet large. I had a buffalo chicken wrap and my wife had a turkey and salami. The sandwiches were large enough that we had to remove some bread to eat them easily. We would come back here.
Eric H — Google review
I had a catering order for 25 people. Dean was easy to get a hold of, helpful with suggestions, and easy to work with. The quality of the sandwiches looked great. The guy who helped me with the pickup order kindly carried everything out to my car. I would definitely order from them again.
Karen C — Google review
My husband stopped in for takeout today, and our sandwiches were fantastic! I had an Italian sub, he had chicken salad. Ohh, the crinkle fries were fried to perfection. Definitely gonna try their other sandwiches!
Kristin T — Google review
Had some time to waste until our family got to their hotel. So we grab some lunch. Ordered 2 wraps and one sub and two small bags of chips and for $50+ we were very disappointed. One person got an Italian was supposed to have L,T,Pickles and extra mayo and for the 13 dollars it’s was very tiny, sub roll was soaked on the bottom (on one half) but didn’t wanna say anything cause we already waited 20 mins. Another person got a chicken salad wrap thinking it would come with lettuce tomato onions or maybe ask if we wanted anything on it instead we got a small wrap with maybe a scoop of chicken salad. Other person got a buffalo chicken wrap and it was very small for the price didn’t have any blue cheese or ranch but it had purple cabbage. We don’t live down here so it would have been nice if the order taker had maybe asked if we wanted anything on the wraps instead of just assuming we just wanted them plain also it doesn’t list what comes on the sandwiches so for people who come down here for vacation and that aren’t familiar with the place the kinda miss out on a potential good sub place. I think If we went to subway or jersey mikes it would have cost less and got bigger sandwiches but we wants to support local main st businesses so I guess that’s what we get. Next time we will know to stick to the chains if we want a decent sandwich (the Italian was the size of jersey mikes mini and more money for less food)!!!! Also the older man who was working thank you for stepping in and helping when your employee didn’t know how to adjust what I wanted on my sandwich you were very polite and helped I should have asked you about the options cause your employee didn’t know what I was asking.
Melissa — Google review
A wonderful find! I was driving behind it when I saw their sign! An amazing selection of sandwiches and salads with excellent service!

Perfect little shop to stop by for a sandwich. I had tacos Tuesday and it was soo good. Two decent size tacos with crispy chicken, cheese and spicy sauce cost roughly $10. Chicken was crispy from on the outside and soft and juicy inside. And I loved sriracha ranch on the bottom of tortilla👍 So delicious and filling. Highly recommend this place

I went in before they were opened (I didn’t realize), they didn’t tell me, just took my order. My veggie wrap (prompt service) was absolutely DELICIOUS!!! So good. YUM!! I am a local and will be back! (The sign on North street was how I found them!) -way more satisfying than any fast food! Thank you!!!

Hiking Trails
Pilgrim Spring Trail, located in Cape Cod National Seashore, holds historical significance as the site where the Pilgrims found their first fresh water in New England. This 2.3-mile loop trail winds through pine and oak forests, offering panoramic views of the town and harbor. While it's a short and easy hike, visitors should be aware that the landscape can become dry during summer months. The trail is known for its scenic beauty with occasional glimpses of the Atlantic Ocean.
Signage has faded. Trailheads are not clearly marked (which way to the bike trail?). Very easy walking.

No springs. Not much to see. Good nature walk.

Nice, easy short hike with a good view of the dunes and ocean below. The trail is moderately maintained and had some tall grassy spots when we visited - take the usual tick precautions. Signage is adequate but on the minimal side.
Eric H — Google review
Short, easy and fun. Once you get to the memorial you can turn around and go back the way you came. For a longer hike I continued on and came out near the bathrooms and a different parking lot than I had parked in so I simply turned around and did the whole trail in reverse.
Christina R — Google review
Went for a run along this here. Very boring and full of mosquitos. Walk both trails and you will only get 1 mile. Recommend for a walk with a kid or dogs, not for hikers or runners. However, there are picnic areas and nice views.

Beautiful site but will eat you alive!! A short hike but come armed with plenty of bug spray! We ended up running because the bugs were so bad (and we were wearing bug spray).

Steep walk from the top to the bottom, and then you need to return. They do have gradual steps, but not for those who can't do a hill. It says it is a .3 mile walk, but I don't think that is the full circle. If you have no limitations, the view is beautiful.

The White Cedar Swamp Trail is a charming 1-mile loop on Cape Cod, with the option to extend the walk to the Marconi Station area. It's an easy and enjoyable walk suitable for various seasons, offering shade in summer and scenic beauty year-round. However, visitors should be prepared for mosquitoes in warmer weather and note that pets are not allowed on the trail.
Nice little walk through a forest and cool swamp at the end. Easy to handle, steps implemented on slight hills. No hand or guard rails along the boardwalk in the swamp area though, so be careful…

These images fall short of its true splendor ! Originally came across the trail online, but was not convinced due to the few reviews / pictures seen. However, decided to visit following multiple recommendations from Cape Cod locals. It is a very short / easy trail ! You can do it as a quick stop.
Sofia A — Google review
An amazing hike! Don't miss out on this gem! We went on a cloudy day that somehow made the trail even more eerie, mysterious, and moody in a good way. The changing autumn leaves also added another layer of mystical beauty. There were so many different types of mushrooms along the way. Be on the lookout high and low since we were told a rare blue colored mushroom supposedly grows in this area! The last one found growing around 40 to 60 feet in a tree! It was a very easy hike with only a few minor steps and inclines. Do yourself a favor and hike this trail.

Hardings Beach in Chatham is a serene sanctuary for those seeking relaxation away from the hustle and bustle. With its calm, warm waters, soft sand, and lifeguards on duty, it's a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. The beach offers amenities such as restrooms and a concession stand for snacks. Nearby beaches like Ridgevale Beach and Pleasant Street Beach also provide similar facilities.
Hardings beach was a lovely discovery. Lots of parking, easy access to the beach, great sunset spot. Wish we had had more time to walk and explore. Would be a great place to walk dogs after September 15.
Alison J — Google review
Way too much seaweed. All along the beach was crunchy seaweed about 2 feet wide. We ended up making a path. Then, another layer of seaweed at the shoreline. Finally, in the water, there was a ton of seaweed. We made the best of the day... kids had seaweed dried into their hair and swimsuits.
Dorothy R — Google review
A great beach! The parking is very close to the beach and the water is very calm on the Nantucket Sound. It's great for building sandcastles, swimming, flying kites, watching sunsets and long walks to the lighthouse and back. During the summer season parking is a little expensive, but it's a great place to spend the day!

Crowes Pasture Conservation Area in Dennis offers a rustic and secluded Cape Cod beach experience. A narrow trail through marshlands and woods leads to a hidden beach, making it one of the most secluded spots on the Cape. The area features 1 mile of dirt roads through uplands and evergreen groves along the bay, accessible by foot or four-wheel drive vehicle. The scenic hiking trails offer beautiful views of Quivet Creek and Cape Cod Bay.

Such a beautiful place. Road going in is dirt but u do not need 4 wheel drive to check out the conservation there is a parking area and paths r well defined try to go at low tide because once u get through the path is a absolutely beautiful beach to walk at low tide. It is surrounded my marshlands such a pretty walk at any time.

NOT dog friendly NOT ANY parking every review on here is INCORRECT I got to a dead end on a one way parked for 5 minutes to let my dog out to take a piss after a one way drive through a dirt forest and got a ticket from people that clearly have NOTHING better going on because their life sucks and they’re a cop on the cape where nothing happens unbelievable also filled with cape snobs never again

Beautiful scenery, but narrow paths with lots or poison ivy, so watch your step! It doesn't look like there's any restrooms around at any of the parking areas.
Sarah T — Google review
Overrun with trash, cigarette butts and seaweed. Easily the most disgusting place on Cape Cod with the exception of the bathroom at George's in Ptown
Demetrios K — Google review
Fantastic bayside beach that is dog friendly and you don't even need to pay to park (almost afraid to spread the word too much!). We visited around 2pm on a Wednesday in mid-August and there were plenty of parking spaces. We parked at the first lot inside the conservation area and walked in about a mile to the beach on great trails through the woods and marsh. Check out the Dennis town website for a trail map and to see where the parking is. Like typical bayside Dennis beaches there is a ton of beach during low tide. I saw that you do need a pass/permit to ride your car onto the beach. The afternoon we went there weren't any cars on the beach (perhaps bc of nesting birds as some reviews say?), though there were a couple tire tracks in one section.

Eddy Bay Trail is a short and easy 1-mile hike through the woods in Brewster, offering stunning views of Cape Cod Bay. The trail ends at the highest bluff in Brewster, providing panoramic vistas from Plymouth to the Pilgrim Monument. It's a family-friendly loop with informative signs along the way and free parking available. The path takes about 20 minutes to walk and is dog-friendly, making it perfect for a short nature walk with your furry friend.
A nice loop for someone who just wants a breath of woodsy air without the commitment of a long hike. The walk took about 20 minutes, and I was treated to a lovely view of the bay halfway through. I enjoyed the various informative signs along the way. I went during the off-season, so I had the place to myself. Free parking was available.
Kimberly R — Google review
Fantastic trail! A hidden gem with lots of different bird calls in the air, and history along the way. It’s advertised as a loop but really it’s an out and back with a circle loop at the ends. The overlook at the end is perched atop the last wild hilltop on Cape Cod Bay in Brewster. In 2000, Ruth N. and Mary-Louise Eddy generously donated these 32 acres to the Brewster Conservation Trust. At 50 feet above sea level, it is the highest bluff between Sandwich and Wellfleet. From here, on a clear day, you can see the entire sweep of the Bay from Plymouth to Provincetown. It’s absolutely gorgeous!
Kristian D — Google review
Lovely dog friendly path that is about a 15min walk to a sand cliff with a beautiful overlook of the bay. Not to rigorous which was perfect for me as I wanted a short nature walk with my dog.
Jazmin S — Google review
Great little walk that takes about 15 minutes. It is a one way in and out path with a small alternative section. That takes you through the holly trees. At the end there is a great view of the bay. The view is from the power plant in plymouth to the tip of the cape. On a very clear day you can see the monument in P-town.
Shawn E — Google review
This was a short and easy walk to a beautiful scenic view of the Cape. The path is narrow, so bring a mask to comfortably pass others.
Mari B — Google review
A true town trail. Just the right length and a great treat at the end. This is an out and back again trail that goes through a dying scrub pine forest that is transitioning to oaks. The end point is a magnificent overlook with a sweeping vista of Cape Cod Bay. On a clear day one can see the Pilgrim Monument and the Sandwich Canal power plant with Plymouth in the distance. Always worth it to watch the interaction of the wind, waves and sky while getting a good walk.
Gary C — Google review
Out and back style trail. Not bad walk. Easy. Depending on time of year, means how many bugs (also wasp nest on trail), dogs, other folks who may go. But can't fit too many cars, so it likely won't feel over crowded.

There are multiple parking areas strategically located within the park for easy access to various trails and attractions. The area is popular for long walks with varied trails suitable for walking and biking.
What a lovely walk in our neighborhood, miles of trails through the woods with plenty of sites of interest along the way. Our favorite was a large flat slab of meltwater granite, reminding us of the ancient geological history unique to the cape. Secret hollows of ephemeral pools and lots of native flora like princess pine, rhododendron, Holly, Birch trees, soft pines, white oaks and Maple trees and if you keep a watchful eye you might spy an endangered Lady slippers - one of the few native orchids found on the easy coast. Trails are easy to walk, well marked, and mild hills - just keep an ear out for local mountain bikers that race through these trails and signs warning you of hunting areas, wear bright reflective clothing and sing aloud to warn hunters of your presence and you should walk in safety.

One of my favorite places to take long walks. Very nice and varied trails both for walking and biking...about the biking, be mindful and carry a whistle to avoid any collisions. I would have given this area 5 stars but for the fact that like most other trails on Cape, LOTS of unleashed dogs and pet owners who think the parks are toilets. SO much dog waste at every turn. Beach and ocean look like they go on forever. Nice sandy beach. We went in late March and there were no crowds. Got lucky on the weather, it was sunny with 10mph winds. Only downside of going off season was the bathroom was closed so had to drive to the visitors center a mile away. Also there is a hiking trail through the dunes and some unique ecosystems.

This place was SO SO SO COOL! First of all, went pretty late in the afternoon, so no one was there to collect payment. We were just stopping in to see the water briefly, so that was a lovely surprise to not have to pay for a quick jaunt. Second, while the sand is a bit rough as far as soft cape beaches go, the rocks were UNREAL!! it was kind of high tide when we went so we didn’t get to dig for a lot of goodies, but the rocks were so colorful and smooth and ugh. Just perfect. Lastly, holy heck!!! We saw seals SO CLOSE TO THE SHORE!!! Kind of scary bc like, sharks (which we didn’t see), but wild to see nature so close up like this. We didn’t stay for “beaching”, but the wildlife here was incredible (we also saw a beautiful fox on the drive through the forested bit), and the facilities were clean!

Super great bicycle trail, had a blast, return trip with some nooks and crannies was 23 miles. Maybe a little narrow on a busy day in some some sections where people congregate. The pathway was cool with trees, covering, through some marsh land, beach and getting down to the ferry area. Be careful near the marsh areas poison ivy so be careful if taking a rest to where you lean your bike. Was a great day and highly recommended. Suggest parking County Rd (151) fallmoth was near a little park.

Beautiful biking excursion. The bikeway is in good shape and the vistas are lovely. At the end, there are excellent cafés in Woods Hole.

Amazing bike path!! Paved road throughout. Goes along ocean for a while. Goes though marshy land as well.

Highland Lighthouse, located in Truro, is a historic landmark that offers visitors a glimpse into the area's past. The lighthouse boasts a small patio with stunning views of the ocean and is an ideal spot to witness breathtaking sunsets. While currently undergoing renovations until 2022, the grounds remain open for exploration and guided tours are available at select times.
Easy walk to see the lighthouse close. I wasn’t there during times of tour. The grounds were well kept and is surrounded by a golf course. The look out a few steps further is beautiful overlooking the ocean and cliffs . Parking could be tricking is golf course is busy but it is free and a very doable flat walk
Allen S — Google review
This was a highlight of our vacation and a must-do if you are in the area. The views from the top are gorgeous and it is well worth the price. The Park Service staff were friendly and knowledgeable, even offering to take a picture of all of us with the beautiful backdrop. Note: There is a ladder that requires some dexterity to get to the inside of the lighthouse - not many steps, but you do have to get up and down it. There is a gift shop on site and restrooms just down the road by the parking lot and attached to the museum. Make sure to walk down to the lighthouse's original location as well. I highly recommend taking an hour out of your day to explore the lighthouse and grounds.
Jackie A — Google review
The tour is definitely worth taking. There's 2 tour guides, one at the bottom and one at the very top. They were both fantastic. They taught us so much about the lighthouse and it's history. Not only are they both knowledgeable, they both were so friendly! I highly recommend the trip to this beautiful lighthouse....the climb to the top (and it's gorgeous views) is going to be s treasured memory.
Cynthia D — Google review
Visited this lighthouse on a weekend, and managed to buy the tickets for the last tour. The price for adult is $8, for school student $6.50. The narrated part of the tour is very short, probably 2-3 minutes. And after, they let you climb the top of the lighthouse. The spiral staircase is very narrow, and the last one on the top is even narrower, even hard to squize the shoulders:))). The bulb is modern one, and differs from other lighthouses. On the top level another tour guide answers all the questions, and takes the pictures of the families. Also, there is very hot there. Plenty of free parking space, and also there is a decent restroom.
Rose D — Google review
Such a great experience for our first light house tour! The staff were so knowledgeable and great with all sorts of questions. Really good and personable with my kids and made it so fun to learn the history of lighthouses and the Cape.
Kristine — Google review
A visit to Highland Lighthouse is an absolute must-do on any Cape Cod itinerary. The location, perched on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic, is simply breathtaking. Taking a tour of the lighthouse is a fantastic experience—the guides are knowledgeable and passionate, and the climb to the top offers incredible panoramic views of the ocean and the surrounding Cape Cod National Seashore. The history of the lighthouse and the stories of its keepers are fascinating and really bring the place to life. We also made sure to walk down to the observation deck. While the view from there is somewhat limited due to the growth of the shrubs and dunes, it still offers a lovely perspective of the dramatic coastline. It's a great spot for a photo and a quiet moment of reflection. The proximity to the Cape Cod National Seashore makes it easy to combine a lighthouse tour with a scenic walk or a relaxing afternoon on the beach. Highland Lighthouse is more than just a landmark; it’s a beautiful piece of history in a stunning natural setting.
George D — Google review
One of the better lighthouses that I have seen. You can actually go up to the light on the top. The keepers house and the grounds are very well maintained. There is a nice little store in the keepers house also. This is the first lighthouse that I've seen with golf course around it.
John D — Google review
Was very cool learning some of the history the light house going back to George Washington. The views were amazing and tour guides were very nice and informative. Just a warning, stairs are a little tight and steep, not bad but our daughter was very scared once we got to the top.

The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, nestled in Brewster, is a delightful destination for nature enthusiasts and families alike. This charming museum offers interactive exhibits and engaging activities that delve into the local ecology and wildlife. With a strong commitment to conservation, it spans over 400 acres of protected land where visitors can explore woodland trails and salt marshes. The museum features fascinating collections on marine life, including whales and birds, alongside live science displays that captivate all ages.
The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History is a fantastic spot for families! 🦀 It’s educational, interactive, and perfect for kids who love nature and sea life. The highlight for us was seeing the extremely rare half blue, half pink lobster—make sure to ask the staff so you don’t miss it. A fun and memorable experience for all ages!

YOU MUST JOIN THE BUTTERFLY 🦋 garden 🪴 Staffs in there was very nice and friendly. I love the atmosphere of it, everything was nice and lovely. We’re from Boston so the museum is small for us but everything was a good new experience for us My daughter loved it so much especially the butterflies 🦋 😅 Overall is nice experience
Tien P — Google review
Went on a weekend and found out the more interactive things for little kids are closed due to staff shortage. Which is super unfortunate because I know my kids would've LOVED that mud kitchen area. This is the only reason why I docked the rating. The museum itself is cute and very informative.
Jessica M — Google review
This place way undersells itself!! We stopped in today and the kids could have stayed for hours. We easily were there for almost two hours and only left because it was really hot and lunch time. So many things to see and do. Mine especially enjoyed the aquarium and the mud kitchen. Definitely a great place to make a trip to on the Cape if you have kids!
Sarah B — Google review
Cute, small museum! Kept the kids busy for a couple of hours. They enjoyed the different craft stations , especially those in the kingfisher play area (timed 30 min play slots).
Laura B — Google review
Hidden gem. Probably the coolest, most educational mini-aquarium I've been to. Small displays that let kids get close up to all kinds of different fish and sea creatures. No touching in the tide pool tank which was a slight disappointment, but the sheer variety of animals was a mitigating factor. Great collection of rare lobster morphs as well! The native American section was thoughtful and informative. I particularly liked the soil cross section showing the different regions that are present locally. Fun rainy day cape activity, highly recommended for thoughtful 4+ year old children.
Joe F — Google review
We had a blast here and could have stayed all day! It’s great for children of all ages and that includes the adult kids. Believe me, it’ll bring out the kid in you! Lots of learning opportunities, activities and creatures to observe. The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and a joy to chat with. We particularly found the active bee hive fascinating! I love that they are able to go outside and then come come back for all of us to observe.
B C — Google review
Best Museum I have ever been to. A great rainy day option while down the cape. Or whatever the weather is. The bird exhibit and the observation area live with the feeders and osprey live cam for me are worth the price of admission. And amazing aquarium! You will NOT be let down. Highly recommend!

Bodies of Water
Cape Cod Canal is a 17.5-mile ship route with paved border trails and areas for fishing, swimming, and camping. The Sagamore and Bourne Bridges span the gorgeous 7-mile canal, attracting over 125,000 vehicles on summer days. Visitors can explore real Cape Cod spots that capture the essence of the area's beauty.
The Cape Cod Canal provides a 7 mile, paved, flat trail for walkers, runners, and bikers. If you start at the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge, there is free parking, bathrooms, water fountains, a playground and children's splash water playground, and picnic table areas. At the end of the trail is the Cape Cod Bay and beach area. It is a fun place to watch the boats go by, people fishing, the cormorants or other birds, seals, and all the people. It is safe with people walking/riding the trail all the time. There is not any shade, so bring a hat and water if you will be walking a long ways. The closest bridge to the Railroad Bridge is the Bourne Bridge and along the way is a campground. There is a store that sells ice cream although I have never been. There are no public bathrooms between those points. Nearby are stores that will rent you a bike if you want to ride the trail to the end. Depending on the which way the wind it blowing and how hard, you can get quite a work out in. There is the Cape Cod train, you can pick up at Buzzards Bay for a train ride which goes across the Railroad Bridge on Fridays 12 pm June - October. The Cape Cod Canal is a treasure and this public trail along the canal is awesome.
Claire W — Google review
The Canal is a great and very easy get away from the hectics of life. Make sure you have fluids to Bike, jog, stroll alone or together among beautiful scenery or pick the right tide and set up to fish. (Former "canal rat") there are many many great & unique spots to learn, overcome and conquer the torrents, one at a time. Fishing the canal is a long journey mastered by few.. Respect the currents and keep it clean.
Mike C — Google review
Cape Cod Canal is one of my favorite places to go to. It is especially spectacular for me, not only because of it's exceptional aesthetic beauty, but as an avid fisherman, the striper fishing there is one of a kind.
Giscard D — Google review
I spend alot of time eating, boating, riding my bike and taking it in whenever I get a chance. Grew up near by and enjoy so many great moments with family and my father on the boat. Absolutley stunning horizon views and great fish to catch!
Sean P — Google review
Only glimpses of the canal as I drove over the Bourne Bridge. Two lanes each way, no divider. Saw a few boats in the canal and green shores.
Liz G — Google review
CC Canal is my daily go to for biking the 7 mile waterside asphalt trail working out or walking and hiking the trails along side it. Plenty of boats and ships, occasional train crossings when the train bridge is lowered for crossing. At Christmas time the Polar Express train treats families to an off sight extravaganza to which I've never been. The kids love it. The fairly new train service from Boston to Hyannis transits and stops here. They beat the horrific highway traffic and carry your bikes etc. Plenty of bathroom access, the Village of Buzzards Bay and good places to shop or eat, drink and walk. BBay has a kids water park, play area there too.. A Pavilion for gatherings and take out dining. Band concerts during the evening during Summer (Thursdays?) in that Green as well. An occasional local farmers market as well. There are a few bike shops that sell, repair and rent various types of bikes. Plenty of parking, walkathon fundraisers, road races and many biking families, training and casual bikers.Lots of dog walkers and strolling couples. Tons of fishers trying to land stripers, bluefish, sea bass along the the riprap.
Robert P — Google review
My Dog Rosco and I visited the Canal for the first time yesterday late afternoon. It was absolutely amazing and I can’t believe I haven’t been before! We definitely will be back many times! We did 5 miles but intend to do the whole thing! There are plenty of benches to stop and rest. A cute little corner store and a playground! It sure has it all ! I enjoyed the peace.
Jess H — Google review
This is a beautiful place to walk, rollerblade, bike, fish, or sit and read watching the boats and wildlife! This week I’ve seen a seal, heron, osprey with a fish, and all kinds of birds. The railroad bridge is a great attraction to bring kids to. It is used often! There is a playground on the railroad bridge side and Scusset Beach on the other end. There is a campground with a little store about a quarter of the way and at the fish pier there is sometimes a food truck! The wind can be tough for young riders coming back towards the railroad bridge if you go the whole ride to the beach. You can park half way down at the visitors center if the ride is too long. For experienced riders you might have to do the ride twice it’s fast and flat! Good Luck!

Head of the Meadow Beach is a wide Atlantic beach that remains uncrowded, making it an ideal destination for families and sunbathers. The area boasts natural pools, sand dunes, and abundant marine life. Visitors can also catch a glimpse of the remnants of a shipwreck during low tides, adding a historical element to their beach experience. For those seeking relaxation, the pristine waters and calm atmosphere provide a perfect retreat amidst nature.
Beautiful in early May on a cool day, 50° F. A huge empty parking lot on a short climb over a low dune to get to a wide open beach. Don't disregard the huge sign about the danger of great white sharks!
Abigail R — Google review
Beautiful Hugh beach! Awesome lifeguards and lots of room! Plenty for kids and adults too! Waves are awesome for everyone!!!
Phyllis F — Google review
The beach is beautiful but seemed more crowded than the likes of Marconi, also lacked the fully functioning bathroom facilities, only having permanent portapotty structures. The walk through the dunes was relatively flat but a bit on the long side and not covered by any walking mats/planks. I wouldn’t drive this far again to go here if I was coming from south of wellfleet.
Caitlin S — Google review
We camped at North of Highland for a week this August and absolutely loved our experience at Head of the Meadow beach (Truro Town Beach side). Even though the purple- dangerous marine life- flags flew each day we were there, we still felt comfortable swimming in the water closer to shore. Waves were breaking on or near the shore with a bit of a drop off during high tide but during low tide there were at least 100 kids and adults boogie boarding and having a blast. The shark sensor there was picking up sharks most days and we saw seals every day but we felt comfortable swimming anyway. Gorgeous views and lively waves only a 5 minute walk from the campground with free walk in access. Can’t beat that for a budget vacation!
Aaren H — Google review
One of my favorite places/beaches to go to on the Cape. The waves are just right not too big like Nauset but has wave action compared to the bay side. The dunes and rolling hills are the perfect backdrop. Little pools form when the tide goes out and when my kids were little they used to love it and you don’t have to worry like when they are in the main ocean water. Usually you will see whales off in the distance binoculars always help usually u think nothing is going on out there but when I looked through the binoculars I could see whales slapping their tales and all sorts of cool stuff. Many seals in the area which means there are many great whites also. So keep your phone or camera handy because when it happens it’s usually pretty quick. Nice parking lot with full bathrooms and washing stations for feet and or complete showers. Changing rooms also. The walk isn’t bad compared to some other beaches. Just up the initial incline then it’s a decline all the way to the beach after that which isn’t far. Great spot. Don’t miss it….
Judd0112 — Google review
Great ocean side beach with large sand bar perfect for little kids. Waves are good for boogie boarding. Not that there are two parking lots - Truro requiring town beach permit to park, and the National Park Service.
Chapin K — Google review
A beautiful beach with some walking area in the back and spacious parking. It is part of the National Seashore so the annual "America the Beautiful" pass will let you park here unlimited times per season as well as on the other National Seashore beaches of Cape Cod. This is the real Cape Cod experience with mini sandstorms as it can be a bit windy, which is a feature not a bug, especially in the midst of August heat wave.
Sunny C — Google review
Best beach with cold showers and sweeping views. High tide can be fierce and low tide reveals great sandbags. Lots of room. Lots of people but easy to spread out.

White Crest Beach is a popular destination known for its dune cliffs, grasslands, and excellent surfing conditions. It is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore and offers six miles of golden sand along with neighboring beaches such as Lecount Hollow, Maguires Landing, and Cahoon Hollow. The beach provides facilities like restrooms and lifeguards for visitors' convenience.
Not for those unable or unwilling to climb a steep dune. But an awesome place for swimming in summer, and beaching or surfing anytime. When we were there, a bunch of folks were paragliding. I’ve seen hang gliders there too if the wind is just right.
Toby B — Google review
Has crazy sand dunes and you should be able to go done and up! Seen a lot of people surfing and it is a great place for surfing enough parking available! Since we visited during winters we went to have lunch with a view and it was amazing, we sat in the car and watched some waves

White Crest Beach is one of my favorite places to stop by in the evening at sunset. The views of the waves from the sand dune cliffs are amazing. It’s so peaceful and relaxing to just sit and watch the ocean. Free parking after 5 PM.

Best beach on the cape! Great wave action, incredible views and awesome dunes. Beachcomber bar/restaurant is just down the beach. Only drawback is the walk back up the sand dune trail. (Shark warning flag was up on this visit...makes it even more fun!)
Todd G — Google review
The best and most beautiful beach on Cape cod! I enjoy the mesmerizing giant sand dunes, sea lions fantastic Waves and great exercise if you're willing to trek up and down the giant sand dunes to get to the beach
Justin B — Google review
Amazed to have to walk down and back up such huge dunes. Clean beach. Beach sand was soft, not course like some beaches. Not so many shells but lots of rocks that washed up in the surf.
Seraphinea R — Google review
Great beach if you are athletic enough to climb the sand dune from hell. 300 feet in elevation at a 45 degree angle. Beach was nice and water was okay not to cold. Alot of seaweed for a ocean beach
David D — Google review
The $31.50 parking fee by kiosk shouldn't be paid until your absolutely sure you and all in your group can walk back up the steep sand path. Take only the bare minimum. Going down isn't that bad. Once your on the beach it's beautiful.
