Dali monastry- important center for Buddhist teachings and meditation, attracting monks and devotees from all over the world established in the year 1971.. One of the best things that happened to me during my visit to darjeeling was at Dali monastry. It was a rainy day in the month of august 2025, we hired a vehicle for sight seeing and returning back from Lamhatta.. as per our driver it was like any other monastry so not to waste our time by visiting it..but since we skipped the tiger hills due to the bad weather so i insisted him to visit Dali monastry atleast for 10 mins..so he agreed ..me along with my wife reached the monastry at about 4pm. The main monastry was at the top as we proceeded upwards we were surprised to reach the area. The monastry was very beautifully built covered with fog at that time(due to the weather) which has further enhanced its beauty.. the sounds of chanting could be heard from inside the main building so we thought it might be restricted to enter during prayers.. so we hurriedly clicked some pictures outside itself and thought to Move out as the driver was waiting in the car.. The sound of chanting attracted me so i moved to the entrance area and was listening to it very cautiously.. a monk noticed me and asked me to enter to inside ..which was not expected..(felt very happy) I didnot think twice and immediately entered ..where i saw about 100’s of monks chanting together.. uttering same words.. some beating the drums and some playing gayling(from mouth).. which collectively was though loud but was very peaceful..all monk were sitting in groups(lanes) i felt like each of them has their own responsibility in the prayer.. they also offered us hot tea amidst the prayer.. It felt like nothing could be more peaceful than sitting inside the prayer hall.. ignoring the drivers continous call we spent inside the hall for about an hour. I wish i could stay there for some more time but bound by the drivers time we decided to leave.. If i had not visited dali monastry that day i would had missed a big day in my life .. It had silently taught me more life lessons which is difficult to describe in words.. so for me its a must visit place 🙏

Dali monastery Very nice place, so peaceful and beautiful. Inside there’s huge statue of lord buddha. There’s a scenic view from outside, you can witness whole Darjeeling from there, Beside this there’s a museum where you can find the antique and unique weapon's and things that used to be used on that time. You can see the toy train passing from the main gate of this monastery. One should definitely visit Dali monastery if you’re coming to darjeeling, such a spiritual and happening place.

My love for places away from the usual tourist trail led me to this quaint monastery in Darjeeling. On a lazy morning, my friend and I decided to walk down to it. From the Mall, take the road going downhill towards Bhutia Busty, and after a leisurely 25–30 minute walk, you’ll arrive at this peaceful spot. The walk is quite steep, so it’s good to be prepared for that. The monastery itself is a beautiful example of Tibetan Buddhist architecture, with intricate details and ornate paintings that immediately catch the eye. We spent nearly an hour here, soaking in the serene atmosphere. A cheerful little kid who lives at the monastery showed us around, and a monk kindly offered us prashad and encouraged us to sit quietly inside and admire the surroundings. The walk back up to town can be tiring. Bike taxis are available, but not very frequent. An alternative — which we opted for — is to continue walking another 30 minutes downhill to Lebong. This stretch is very steep but rewarding, as it takes you through a stunning forest path that feels truly enchanting. From Lebong, you can easily catch a shared taxi back to Darjeeling.

It is a stunning example of Tibetan architecture. The main building is a large, mix red-white colored structure. The interior of the monastery is decorated with beautiful murals and statues of Buddha. The monastery also has a library, a meditation hall, and a garden.

One of the best but the most underrated monastery of Darjeeling due to its reachability. The roads are extremely steep but the monastery is beautiful. Do visist it once when you are in Darjeeling.

Bhutia Busty monastery is one of the many monasteries in Darjeeling but it is different from the others because it is located at a place away from all the noise. Start walking from Darjeeling Chowrasta towards Chittaranjan Das Memorial road and you will reach this serene monastery in Upper Bhutia Busty. One thing for sure is people with walking issues and asthma problems should avoid going because it is quite a downhill and uphill walk.

This is most wonderfully located. Depending on your age and fitness the journey may vary. If possible though, please do pay a visit. More importantly, if you do visit, please maintain the decorum of the monastery. The monks are successful people. Here's how I say this with such great conviction. I visited this monastery with my parents. Being located relatively remotely horses and cars do not ferry travellers. A little after we reached the temperatures dropped and the rains started. A few hours later the weather showed no initiations if stopping. Noticing we were stranded, Aku, a dear monk kept us constant company. He even offered prasad as it was almost lunch time. He went as far as giving away his umbrella to us, knowing full well he may not ever get it back. When we refused his offer, he got dressed in waterproof wollen's and attempted to accompany us on an uphill climb. The other monks made tea for us and got us chairs to sit on. Eventually we took his umbrella, got to Mall Road, purchased an umbrella, and finally my mother went back again to the monastery to return it to Aku 😊 Hence my sincerest request to everyone to please maintain the decorums and keeping to the harmonious coexistence. Finally, the view while on the way and at the monastery is priceless. The environment is clean an bd pious. Worth a visit for soo, soo many different reasons!

A tranquil site, situated on internal roads of Darjeeling, almost gone unnoticeable if not aware of the surroundings. It has less footfall by tourists and that makes this monastery a catch, just sit in the benches in the courtyard and enjoy the views or gaze at the marvellous structure both inside and outside the structure.

Established in the year 1914, Aloobari Monastery is located some 3km away from Darjeeling Town. The place in which it is located is called Aloobari and hence such name. But the actual name is Yolmowa Mak dhog Monastery or Magdhog Monastery. It's the 2nd oldest monastery in Darjeeling. The monastery contains several images of Gautam Budhha and varied paintings on the wall which are said to be done with grass and herbs. The monastery also preserves several ancient Buddhist manuscripts. A tranquil site, situated on internal roads of Darjeeling. Grand view, scenic beauty and well maintained. Do come and visit it.

Beautiful little monastery. However when we wanted to donate 100 INR the monk asked for 500 INR which appears to be a little exaggerated given that the entrance fee to Dali monastery is 20 INR incl. the museum.

The original statues still stand today, depicting Guru Rimpoche as the main deity, flanked by Lord Buddha. To the left of this you can see the holy Kangpur (Sutras) and a smaller image of Kenchen Bodhisatta. To the right is a complete set of ‘Rinchen Terzed’ with an image of Choegyal Duetsen. Little monks during ritual In the beginning, the monastery was headed and steered by Amdo Lama himself until his passing in 1918. At this time the monastery fell in to a period of neglect. From 1935 onwards the main temple was converted to a school consisting of two classes. This school functioned until 1946 when it was moved to a building near Yiga-Choeling Old Ghoom Monastery. In 1959 His Holiness the Sakya Trizin, who was in Darjeeling after fleeing Sakya, in Tibet, requested that Dakpa Babu and the committee members of the Monastery make it available to house a group of Sakya Lamas who had also fled Tibet. At this time the Monastery had over 90 lamas and was headed by Gadhen Ponlop Tashi Tenzin as abbot and Geshe Tuchi Wangchuk, Geshe Tashi Namgyal, and Geshe Sherab Gyaltsen as the senior tutors. It was during this period, under very trying conditions, that that the learned lamas began the difficult task of recalling from memory the sacred texts of the Sakya tradition which were then handwritten on a daily basis. The first prayer book, ‘Cho jod Molam’ was printed in Darjeeling with seed money of 20 rupees donated by Po Jayang. In 1961, upon the suggestion of His Holiness Sakya Trizin Rinpoche, Khenpo Sangay Tenzin was appointed as abbot (mkhan po) in the Guru Sakya Monastery at Ghoom, to take charge of the monastic community in Ghoom, and to provide the necessary leadership. Khenpo Sangay Tenzin, a learned scholar, began his task in earnest. During his time most of the sacred Sakya texts were transcribed and printed under the monastic order of Sakya Guru Lhakang Do-Ngag Norbu Ling Choede Chenpo, Ghoom, Darjeeling, as the new seat of the Sakya order in exile and also as the first ever Sakya monastery in exile. Khenpo Sangay Tenzin initiated ‘Yar-Nye’, a summer retreat for all monks from 1962, a tradition which continues to date. In 1979 the (Shedra) College was also founded by Khenpo. In 1987, with the formal handing over of the monastery, Sakya Guru Monastery was registered as a Society within the West Bengal government. Khenpo Sangay Tenzin passed away in 1990, having served His Holiness Sakya Trizin and the Sakya order very faithfully in its early and difficult period, supported loyally by the monastic community. In 1997 Khen Rimpoche’s reincarnation Sakya Khentul Kunga Tenzin Gyaltsen was formally recognised. He successfully completed all the formal monastic trainings in 2002, and currently studies Buddhist philosophy at Sakya College in Rimbick. From 1992 to 2004 the monastery’s noble activities were carried out under the guidance of the late Khenpo Thupten Sangpo and later, in the year of 2005 His Holiness Sakya Trizin appointed Khenpo Palden Phuntsok as a chief abbot of the Guru Sakya Monastery.
