Kapalua Bay Beach is a serene and picturesque spot located on the northwest side of Maui. The crescent-shaped cove is known for its tranquil waters, making it an ideal location for snorkeling and scuba diving. Visitors can expect to encounter a variety of marine life, including sea turtles, parrotfish, and moray eels. The beach's golden sands, swaying palm trees, and coral reefs add to its natural beauty.
This was by far the nicest beach for us. It was beyond beautiful. The snorkeling was safe and rewarding. Lots of sea life like eels, turtles, and a variety of fish. The water was warm and turquoise blue. Plenty of sand to call home for the day. Close bathrooms, showers. There are some paid parking spots available close by. There is also paid parking across the street @ $10 for 3 hours or $15/day. You pay with your smartphone.

A pristine beach with breathtaking views! There are day use rentals & great shore snorkeling with a variety of fish, coral and several large sea turtles. Parking ranges from $18-$20 if there’s no free street parking-it’s a paved five minute path to the beach with nice permanent restrooms with outdoor running water to clean your Sandals etc Definitely check it out!
April — Google review
Great beach! Seemed like parking could be tight but never had a problem because we got there in the morning. I swam a couple of times out here with my 8 y/o son and the waves never got very big compared to other beaches we went to. Saw a lot of fish especially along the one side of the bay where there was a lot of coral that hadn't been trampled on
Ryan F — Google review
Very nice beach with excellent snorkeling. Decent amount of parking, but it can fill up toward the middle of the day so I’d recommend coming earlier rather than later. Street parking is free if you can find a spot, and the parking lot is pretty expensive at $33 for a day pass (the only option). The Kapalua Coastal Trail starts here as well and is an extremely nice out-and-back trail that follows the pacific coast. Very nice bathroom that is well-maintained and clean. This is a must-visit spot if you are in the area.
Casey L — Google review
Beautiful little beach, easy access, expensive parking. You have to pay for a day pass, with tax is over $30. We hung out for several hours and had a great time, felt like it was worth it. I snorkeled the whole bay, saw several turtles, a ton of fish, an eel, and supposedly someone saw an octopus. My kids played in the sand and the waves. Plenty of nice beach for them without coral or lava rock too close to tear them up. Just out from the beach there is lots of coral for exploring. Really cool spot. It was pretty crowded when we go there, but it cleared out when it rained (I didn’t even know it was raining because I was snorkeling lol). We will probably go back here if in the area.
Aaron D — Google review
Further north along the coast of Maui sits Kapalua Bay, a beautiful bay with a nice but small beach and decent snorkeling options. The journey to the beach was a bit long as parking is a bit of a walk out and even more so if you choose not to pay for parking (we are cheap so we didn’t). The walk itself is pretty and the path is nice with a wash off area included at the entrance point where there are bathrooms as well. The beach itself is on the smaller side than others so finding a spot may take an early arrival or patience as a whole. The water is clear although when we went further out the visibility was not as good as it was the days prior at Black Rock Beach. As for snorkeling specifically, the fish variety was alright and the lower visibility, although not terrible, certainly didn’t grant as much fun as we had hoped. Unfortunately as mentioned before, if the snorkeling isn’t good then there isn’t much else going for the beach as it is a bit smaller and crowded. If we had to label it as something we would call it more of a lounging beach, a relaxing place to enjoy the view and waves. We could have just had bad luck with snorkeling that day so that’s something to note as others may have had a different experience. Nevertheless, it’s a beach. Go out and enjoy the waves!
Amber L — Google review
We got a condo down in Kihei - about 40 minute drive to this beach - and ended up on this beach 3 out of the 8 days we were here as this is the best beach we've gone to! It being a bay is very safe, the beach is great for kids to play in, and snorkeling is phenomenal. We recommend that you don't park in the lot by the beach - 40.00 bucks I think, but try to find a spot along the road right next to the lot OR park at the tennis courts above the road where parking is 15 for the whole day. Definitely a beach worth a try!
Petar V — Google review
Beautiful snorkeling! One of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Soft golden sand. Clear blue green water. Beautiful, colorful fish, including large parrot fish, surgeon fish, and puffer fish. We also saw one spot butterfly fish, banded wrasses, box fish, a large school of white fish, a needle fish, ornate butterfly fish, Sargent fish, damsel fish, pink sea urchins, Black Sea urchins, puffy red urchins, and a sea turtle. There were a few still living corals, too.

Wailea Beach is a stunning public beach known for its sandy shores and a variety of activities such as sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling. The area is surrounded by luxurious resorts, restaurants, and a vibrant atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy the sight of frothy white waves along the crescent-shaped coves while indulging in fruity cocktails and tropical shave-ice flavors.
Gorgeous beach! Great for swimming more family friendly waters. Has a parking lot with restrooms, washing station and is a short walk to the beach. It's very popular so there is lots of people especially since it's in the resorty area.
Morgan J — Google review
Beautiful beach with an amazing view! There is plenty of free parking nearby with breathtaking views. This is a must visit when you are in Maui.
Philipp B — Google review
Such a great beach. Wasn’t too crowded. Soft sand in and out of the water. Little lava fields at both ends that attract fish and turtles for snorkeling. The waves are flat and great for swimming, not so good for anything else. Very calming and relaxing and peaceful. No shade so bring your own.
TheDoug801 — Google review
Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful. This was our favorite part of our stay. My son played in the waves for hours. We had to pull him away each time. The waves can really get wild, so be careful and keep an eye on little ones, no lifeguard here. We went in August and it was quite hot, hitting 90s each day and the sun is intense. Be prepared with preferably some shade to take a break and sunscreen, of course.
Ron S — Google review
Nice beach small waves good for lounging maybe snorkeling but not much boogie boarding.
Suzanna S — Google review
Stunning picturesque beach with ample parking, showers, and powdery sand. Not a lot of natural cover for shade so come prepared. Go early for calmer waves and a chance to see sea turtles, crabs, and fish. Waves pick up noticeably in the afternoon.

What can we say it an island surrounded by the ocean . Great place we snorkel for hours.

Nestled on Maui's serene eastern coast, Hamoa Beach is a hidden gem that beckons adventurers willing to navigate the winding Road to Hana. This stunning crescent-shaped beach stretches for about 1,000 feet and is framed by dramatic sea cliffs and vibrant greenery, creating an idyllic backdrop for relaxation and exploration. The beach boasts soft gray sand formed from coral and lava, making it a unique spot for sunbathers looking to soak up the Hawaiian sun.
Hamoa Beach is a stunning, crescent-shaped gem with soft sand and clear blue waters. The waves can be strong, making it great for body surfing but requiring caution for swimmers. Surrounded by lush greenery, it has a mix of locals and visitors, creating a welcoming vibe. Limited roadside parking means arriving early is best. There are porta potties and shaded areas set back from the beach. A must-visit for a peaceful and scenic beach day on the Hana side.
Shane P — Google review
This review is based on our overall experience with all the beaches we’ve been to. We’re Florida beaches kind of fans as there is just no comparison. This beach was ok. They at least had relatively clean porta potties. The waves were strong but there were a few people swimming. The trees are nice but they shed all this junk that takes away from the beauty of the place. Black sand is different but not as nice as white sand. People are pretty good about not leaving trash everywhere too which is wonderful.
Aviatrix — Google review
BEWARE of the drive to get here! Beautiful beach! Lots to see and do. I was fortunate enough to go at an hour with less people. Warm water. Clear. Clean. Just be very cautious about driving yourself (in your car rental) bc it's a very long and winding road. Literally only one car can fit in some spots - there's a steep cliff on one side and a jagged volcanic rock wall on the other. Lots of blind turns. Also, the locals know the roads well so they drive FAST! They will seriously tailgate you until you let them pass. Nothing wrong with that, but beware. ALSO - I HAD NO CELL SIGNAL FOR MOST OF THE DRIVE! IF SOMETHING HAPPENS - YOURE SOL! The sun was setting so I trekked around the other way as to avoid that crazy road in complete darkness potentially damaging the car rental.
Jay H — Google review
One of the best beaches on the island, wavy, but safe. When snorkeling, there was absolutely NOTHING in the water. Clear, warm, not too deep, waist height when pretty far in. Parking is on the side and you enter via steps going down.
Alicja — Google review
It’s just beautiful!! The water is lovely, the surrounding are pure. This is a sacred beach to the local, so respect and keep it clean and peaceful
Samrat B — Google review
My favorite beach 🏝️ water so clear and clean.
Three S — Google review
Beautiful and smooth beach popular with locals and tourists. Seems very good for families with children, as it has moderate waves and is somewhat protected from the sea. Parking is on the road above the beach, and access is via a path down from the road. Porta potties help keep the area clean.
Arild D — Google review
We had to parallel park to get a parking spot. However, we did find a shaded spot on the beach to set up chairs and a cooler. The waves were definitely bigger here than on other beaches in Maui. The sand was somewhat more…gray? All in all, a nice little beach and a relaxing swim.

Keawakapu Beach, located between Wailea and Kihei in South Maui, offers a tranquil and less touristed alternative to the larger beaches in the area. The beach features soft white sand perfect for lounging and strolling, while the calm ocean is great for swimming and snorkeling, especially at the southern end where sea turtles can be spotted. It's a hidden gem with fewer resorts nearby, making it popular among locals.
Keawakapu Beach is a gem with soft sand, clear waters, and fewer crowds than other Maui beaches. It’s great for swimming, snorkeling near the rocky outcrops, and long walks along the shore. Sunsets here are stunning, and morning visits offer calm waters. Limited parking means arriving early is best. There are showers but no public restrooms. It’s a peaceful, scenic spot perfect for a relaxed beach day.
Shane P — Google review
Smooth sand (virtually no rocks). Grassy area next to the sand for even more comfortable seating. Beautiful water, great temperature. Waves were pleasant. Free parking/access. This beach was "just right" for us.
Benjamin C — Google review
This beach was recommended by several staff from our hotel. The beach is beautiful with its very smooth sand. It’s a little tricky navigating from the parking lot while carrying beach chairs and umbrellas. The place was crowded when we visited, I can see why there why the place is popular with swimmers.
Susanna S — Google review
Favorite beach on ALL of Maui. Great beach for swimming, snorkeling, walking and tide pools. Great place to go when the wind kicks up… you can head up into the grass in front of the Mana Kai and the building will block the wind. Love this beach!
Colleen K — Google review
Always a great beach to swim at, with interesting formations for snorkeling. Nice showers and well maintained restrooms for a comfortable day at one of Maui's most scenic beaches.
Toby N — Google review
Great beach for swimming, snorkeling. Saw a sea turtle swimming by the rocks. There are two parking lots and easy beach access.
TJ B — Google review
A great swimming beach, as the waves are calm. Relaxing. Water is clear. Can go out pretty far and still touch. Not super busy. Have noticed quite a few dogs with their owners, which is cute and entertaining.
Libbi F — Google review
Great beach for exploring. The day we went, the surf was pretty rough so we just explored around the rocks. Easy parking and lots of shade.

Kaihalulu Beach, also known as the red sand beach, is a secluded and compact beach located along the Road to Hana in Maui. Accessible via a steep and narrow dirt trail from the town of Hana, this hidden gem offers breathtaking scenery with its distinctive dark-red sand contrasting against the turquoise-blue ocean. The beach is surrounded by steep volcanic cliffs covered in tropical pines, creating a picturesque setting for visitors.
Kaihalulu Beach is a stunning, hidden gem with its vibrant red sand and dramatic cliffs. The hike in is short but challenging, with narrow, steep, and slippery sections—proper footwear is essential. Parking is tricky, and access is unmarked, so expect an adventure. The cove offers calmer waters for swimming, but conditions can change. Not ideal for kids or those uncomfortable with heights. A breathtaking, off-the-beaten-path experience for those willing to take the trek.
Shane P — Google review
Parking for the beach is somewhat tricky as you have to park in the community. Once parked, you will walk to the trail and then take the trail to the beach. The trail is fairly easy. There is not much elevation change. It does have a few slick spots if not wearing the right type of footwear. There are also a few narrow areas along the trail. The view along the trail is very nice. However, the trail is very manageable on a dry day. There were quite a few people there at the beach, about 50 to 70 people when I got there, which is a fairly small beach. It is a good swimming and snorkeling area as it is protected.
Christopher E — Google review
A beautiful beach, but it takes 10 minutes to get there along a path without signs and the path is quite narrow in some places. You can park your car near the school if you find a free space or near HANA BEACH PARK and walk another 10 minutes. You can visit this beach once to take beautiful photos and videos.
Тамара Г — Google review
My wife and I hit this gem up several times during our stay. Honestly I didn’t want to review because others might show up! 😜 I love the beauty and serenity. The waters are pretty calm. I didn’t snorkel but saw several others. We did get to see a monk seal 🦭!
Ben L — Google review
One end of the beach has a high ledge where animals come to graze. Very organic and picturesque. It’s been years since I last visited Hana and this beach, but it is etched in my mind as one of the most beautiful beach settings I have ever been blessed to visit, in this lifetime!!
Reiki H — Google review
Very beautiful and secluded beach. Well protected by a chain of rocks that makes it a safe spot for swimmers of all ages. When we were there, there were parents with small children, as well as elderly. The danger of the path there seems somewhat exaggerated. I suppose it may be too scary for some, but for most people it will not be a problem at all. The viewing point just before the path descends to the beach is a nice spot for taking photos.
Arild D — Google review
Wow! This beach is spectacular if not just for the view as you come around the trail head. It can be rough but it’s protected by a natural rock formation just off the shore so you can swim and snorkel. The trail has a number of warning signs but I think that’s more for litigation purposes. The trail is moderate with a few steeper sections. If you can walk it...it’s definitely worth it
35 S — Google review
One of the most beautiful beaches in maui (no reservation needed). Finding the beach can be tricky (take a left from the dead-end and walk through what looks like a private property) but worth the effort. Ample free parking across the street is available. Also, wear footwear with good grip because reaching the beach needs a small hike through an uneven trail.

Makena Beach, also known as Big Beach, is a stunning and spacious beach located in Makena State Park on Maui. It is a popular spot for swimming and snorkeling, offering soft white sand and bright turquoise waves. The beach's sheer size and dramatic scenery make it one of the most beautiful places on the island. Despite its powerful shorebreak, which makes it one of the most dangerous swimming beaches on Maui, many people still consider it their favorite year after year.
Makena Beach is a breathtaking spot with golden sand, crystal-clear waters, and powerful waves that demand respect. The beach is spacious, making it easy to find a quiet spot even when it's busy. Lifeguards are on duty, but the shore break can be intense, so swimming isn't ideal for beginners. Parking is paid, but there's some free street parking if you arrive early. Food trucks nearby offer quick bites, but bring water and shade since there's little natural cover. This is a must-visit for those who love dramatic coastal scenery, but caution is key if you're getting in the water.
Shane P — Google review
Beautiful and perfect if you are not a big ocean swimmer and prefer to just lay and watch the waves. Also beautiful for a sunset and/or evening beach photos. If you like to swim in the ocean but afraid of big, aggressive waves, then this may not be the spot for you. The orange flag was waving the day we visited. The lifeguard came over the intercom announcing to be cautious due to previous injuries that include spinal injuries.
Libbi F — Google review
Best Maui beach in my opinion. It was not crowded, there was soft white sand, and the sunset was unbelievable. Just take into consideration that this is not a swimmable beach.
Christian M — Google review
Most beautiful water, clear light blue and very warm. It costs money to visit since it's a state park i think it was $10 per vehicle and then $5 per person. So gorgeous!
Morgan J — Google review
Great beach to go to. Take a chair and umbrella to sit and a nice long beach to walk. There is also places for shade. Take your food and drinks. Nothing there to buy.
Lucinda D — Google review
One of my favorite beaches on Maui. Good waves, clean golden sand, and plenty of space. There’s paid parking, but many people park along the road. It’s about a 5-10 minute walk. Great place to catch the sunset.
M P — Google review
As the name suggests, Big Beach is very spacious, around 0.5 miles long. The sand is soft and great for relaxing. Swimming can be done as well, but only in the right conditions. This beach is known for creating huge, unexpected waves, so only intermediate to strong swimmers should be swimming here.
Local R — Google review
Amazing beach! Super clear water, soft sand, some shade from the trees, pretty empty with only a few people around. The waves are big! No joke! So be careful going in & out of the water. I saw a few people snorkeling further out & some people surfing. The state park has a $10 parking fee but we drove a bit past the parking lot & parked on the side of the road for free. This beach is super chill & relaxing & was one of our favorite beaches in Maui! Definitely check it out

Nestled a few miles east of the luxurious resorts in Kapalua, Honolua Bay is a hidden gem that captivates both locals and visitors alike. This pristine bay, flanked by dramatic jade cliffs, offers an idyllic escape into nature. Known for its exceptional snorkeling during the summer months and challenging surf breaks in winter (ideal for advanced surfers), Honolua Bay is designated as a Marine Life Conservation District.
No passes, tours, or reservations needed. Stop at the overlook to get a great view and check the conditions. There are no amenities aside from porta-potties in the parking area. We parked roadside and walked through the forest path with lush tropical foliage and roaming chickens. The water is clear and beautiful. Note that the beach is made of large slippery rocks and a dilapidated boat ramp, so it takes some balance and coordination just to get into the water safely. Once you get into the water it is not a difficult swim. The water was calm on the August day we visited. Bring your own snorkel gear and swim to the right of the bay from the beach, until you find the large reefs. We saw an amazing assortment of fish of all colors and sizes, colorful coral, and sea urchins (don't touch or step on them). We met a sea turtle near the reef. Use sun protection. Best snorkeling spot we've found in Maui so far!
Cody C — Google review
Wonderful snorkeling with gorgeous fish, eels, sea turtles, and Spinner dolphins! Great views from several overlooks and highway 30 hugging the western shore of Maui.
Jason R — Google review
Beautiful bay - but mainly only used to snorkel and see the fish! You need to park along the highway (there are some sections to park) and walk down a path. There are two paths that lead you to the same place. It said that it was closed off, but I think it was more meant for vehicles; you can walk past the gate. Also, note that there is no sand - it's all rocks and a little hard to walk on, and the rocks in the water is slimy, so be careful. But, overall, it's a wonderful place to snorkel. There's a lot of fish and no waves. We just went by ourselves (no tour) and snorkeled with regular swimming goggles!
David N — Google review
Rocky beach, but amazing snorkeling place. Clear and calm water, chicken running around in the background. we snorkeled for 2 hours. Saw a lot of colorful fishes, tons of reefs, even an octopus!!
JW — Google review
Wonderful place to snorkel. There is no cost to park or snorkel. A varity of fish are present on the northside. A short walk through a beautiful jungle-like forest is an added bonus. The beach is larger rocks with no sand areas. Be careful when entering and exiting the bay. The rocks, as mentioned in other reviews, are slippery. No lifeguard on duty. Porta-potties are available but not very clean or maintained.
S. S — Google review
Very nice place for snorkelling, but be careful, not easy access to get in the water and strong currents. Nice walk to the beach! Toilets are not great but are available.
Sarah R — Google review
Gorgeous. Come early if you need to park, and it's a really cool walk through the "Enchanted Forest" getting down to the shore. In fact, you'll wonder if you're headed in the right direction after a while, but keep going. I'd hesitate to call it a beach as you're going to be hanging out on stones that would make the beaches of Nice jealous. But you came for the snorkeling, right? Get out there - you won't be disappointed. Say hey to "Uncle Jimmy" (and contribute $$). Also, don't leave any food out or your camp will be attacked by dinosaur descendants.
Michael P — Google review
This is one of the best Snorkel spots on Maui. It's a bit of the main resort areas but worth the drive. Street parking us limited and you'll have to do a short hike though lush tropical vegetation that feels like it is straight out of Jurassic Park. The beach is rocky and the best part of the reef is out about 500 feet and to the right once you are in the water. If you are up to putting in the effort you might be rewarded with hundreds of fish of every variety,, a half dozen turtles, a colorful reel, eel, octopus and the occasional barracuda or shark. Also nice if you just want to go for a short hike!

Charley Young Beach is a small park and beach located at the northern tip of Kamaole Beach Park. It offers various activities such as swimming, sunbathing, fishing, snorkeling, and boogie boarding. The beach is known for its kid-friendly tide pools with turtle sightings. Visitors can enjoy crafting sandcastles on the soft sands or swimming in the shallow waters. Volleyball and paddleboarding are popular activities on the beach and in the water.
Nice beach with lifeguards, restroom and grocer store across the street. The water gets less clear closer to 11.00am. It’s a lot of turtles swimming near the rocks to the left.

Great beach for swimming. So many turtles on the right-hand side. (Don't touch them though) Current gets pretty strong later in the day, so I'd keep that in mind if you're not an experienced ocean swimmer/snorkeler. Sunsets here are unreal. One of my favorite beaches.

In June of 1966 I had the vacation of my life for a month in Kihei. My Aunt was friends with Betty and Charlie Young. I spent countless hours on this beach and at their house. I was thrown a surprise 14th birthday party by Betty, their Daughter, Diana Young Solomon, neighbors and friends ( the Freitas girls). My bucket list has what is now Charley Young Beach as a place I want to see again. I'm sure that changes and development will make my memories unrecognizable. It was heaven on Earth ♥ I now 73 yrs old 💕

Okay beach there is spoils of beaches on the island this one is bigger beach so more room and feels less crowded. Sometimes there homeless beach of the showers and bathrooms. The water is definitely not clear dirty sandy water. You won’t be able to see turtles like at the other beaches in the water swimming close to shore. I’d head south of here for clear water swimming and snorkeling. Maluaka beach is much less crowded and clear water with turtles swimming by every day I went there multiple spotting of them.

Amazing beach for families. Many kids are boogie boarding and we had lots of fun hanging out on the beach. Hard to find parking though, so the best way is to walk somewhere and walk here.

Good for swimming. Relaxed beach vibe. Outdoor showers to wash up before you leave. Perfect to sit and watch the sunset with a glass of wine too. Small rocky areas for kids to climb on.

Charley Young Beach in Maui offers a tranquil and intimate beach experience, ideal for those seeking a less crowded spot compared to other popular beaches. Located at the northern end of Kamaole I Beach in Kihei, this beach features golden sands and crystal-clear waters, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling. The beach is known for its calm conditions, especially in the morning, and you might even spot Hawaiian green sea turtles while snorkeling. Parking is convenient, with a small lot available just off South Kihei Road. Amenities include portable toilets, showers, and a grassy area for picnics. While it lacks some of the facilities of larger beaches, its serene atmosphere and natural beauty make it a standout spot. Despite the occasional rocky areas, Charley Young Beach is perfect for bodyboarding and surfing when the conditions are right. Its location near residential neighborhoods provides a peaceful retreat, making it a favorite among locals and visitors alike. For the best experience, arrive early to secure parking and enjoy the serene morning waters. Overall, Charley Young Beach is a hidden gem in South Maui, offering a peaceful escape with stunning views and excellent opportunities for swimming and snorkeling.

Oneuli Beach, also known as the black sand beach, is a picturesque and sparsely visited gem located in Makena State Park. The dark brown sand, formed from ground lava rock, offers a unique contrast to the clear waters and volcanic red hill of Puu Olai towering over the area. While not as crowded as its neighboring beaches, Oneuli Beach provides excellent opportunities for swimming and snorkeling on calm days.
A small, secluded beach with unique blackish sand. There’s no entry fee, but it’s not ideal for swimming due to the many rocks. It’s a favorite spot for locals, who often relax here with their pickup trucks.
Artem P — Google review
Super beautiful black sand beach! More like dark red spotted sand but beautiful regardless. Didn’t snorkel or anything, just walked around and it was still breathtaking.
Tina C — Google review
Very soft sand and not crowded at all! Some small annoying flies in the afternoon. Saw a shark and a seal. Definitely worth a visit!
Josh C — Google review
Not a top beach spot so it’s not very crowded. Seems to be more of a locals spot. Sand is red and black. The cliff in the background is all red lava that’s slowly crumbling away. My son and I hiked up the ridge to the left. I’d suggest NOT doing this. The lava is extremely sharp and In some spots it’s unsafe to step on because it crumbles away underneath your step. Other parts were slippery from being wet. We saw lots of fish and turtles in the water.
David R — Google review
Oneuli Beach is a hidden gem just a short drive from Kihei, and it’s definitely worth a visit. The sand isn’t as dark as Waianapanapa, but it still has that unique black-sand charm, making it a beautiful spot to explore without the longer drive. There’s a great hike right next to the beach that offers stunning views and a chance to enjoy Maui’s landscape from a different angle. We loved the quieter vibe here – it felt like a peaceful retreat. It’s a bit of an adventure to find, with a short drive down a dirt road and through an unmarked gate, but that just adds to its charm. If you’re looking for a mix of scenery, solitude, and a nearby hiking option, Oneuli is a fantastic spot to spend a day.
Tyler — Google review
This was such a beautiful secluded beach. Not crowded at all. Entry point is easy to miss — small little turn-off from main road and parking is very limited. There is quite a bit of distance between parking lot and the shore — sand can get extremely hot, so I would bring thick sole shoes. If you plan to swim, some parts of the water are rocky and small urchins were hidden in little caverns of large flat rocks that you can stand on — would recommend water shoes.
Nicole P — Google review
Unique, beautiful, and charming beach off the beaten path. Beautiful sand. Amazing at sunset. Private and not busy at all. No lifeguard, so possibly not a swimming beach for weaker swimmers. Could be a nice place for a picnic or location to camp out and relax without a crowd. Bring *safe/natural bug repellant* if going close to sunset.

Tucked away behind luxury vacation homes in Makena, Chang's Beach is a serene cove with a small stretch of golden sand perfect for uninterrupted sunbathing. Despite its hidden location and limited parking, this beach offers tranquility and great swimming and snorkeling opportunities. The area is known for its peaceful atmosphere compared to the more popular nearby beaches in Wailea and Kihei.
Overall a great experience. Clear water, lots of turtles, not so crowded, and showers are convenient. Parking is limited.

A great wide and long beach. It’s very picturesque and was super quiet when we visited in early February. There were some waves when we were here so it wasn’t great for snorkeling but we still saw a turtle near the shore.
Iliana R — Google review
Best beach I visited in Maui. Good waves for body boards and body surfing. Turtles are right around the corner too. Just go around the southern rocks and reef to see them. They even come to the beach if you don’t want to snorkel.
John L — Google review
People are super friendly. They have a drum circle to the right, through the rocks. Then they have fire twirling at night to the left.
Mike Y — Google review
I love this beach! Snorkel in the wild with the turtles! Beautiful sandy beaches. Nude beach parties(hike to the right to find the nude beach) fire dancers, you never know what you might experience.
Debbie R — Google review
One of the beaches that I love to video call my friends and family from. There are beautiful lava rock formations along the beach, on the far north end of Changs Beach is a semi secluded paradise the locals call Secret Beach. Similar to Little Beach, there may be nude sunbathers soaking in the rays. Plenty of parking inside the gate and often people park outside the gate if they plan to stay after sunset as the gate gets locked by 8pm. There is one porto-poty inside the entrance. The parking lot is all gravel and quite unlevel. There are plenty of trees and greenery all over so you can find shade for all those fair skinned beauties. The sunsets are magnificent and unforgettable at this location. I believe that is what draws the newlyweds and their photographer here daily. Picture postcard perfect.

This beach is pretty quiet compared to the others. The waves are great for body surfing and boogies boarding. And snorkeling in the morning you can usually see lots of turtles!
Ben — Google review
If you're looking for turtles this is the only place I ever saw them while snorkeling--and I saw 20, maybe more... I went at 8 am. Start at the south end, go out a few hundred feet following the rock/coral boundary and you will see a million of them!

Waiʻānapanapa State Park is a coastal park known for its unique features such as black lava sand, tidal caves, and native plants. Visitors can also rent cabins within the park. One of the main attractions is the black sand beach at Waiʻānapanapa State Park, offering a striking contrast between the volcanic landscape and the lush greenery against the backdrop of the ocean.
Incredible and astonishing! Black sand beach was truly wonderful. There is an amazingly scenic hiking trail going both ways from the beach with blowholes, crashing waves, and many spots to go down and explore some lava rock tide pools! Then the beach itself. I expect just some dark colored sand, but no, the sand, the rocks, the cliffs all entirely black. The lava tube and lava caves were all awesome! The only issue is that there are a very limited number of parking spaces, and you need to buy a permit online well in advance to get one. The work around that I found for that is they also have camping permits for tent campers. And waking up to watch a sunrise over the black sand is one of the most surreal moments of my life.

Love this place. Endless amounts of opportunities to explore. Great place to just let loose and wonder around. Probably want to keep tabs on the young kids and those who can't swim. It is a strong surf (check out my video for that), and you will definitely want to be aware of your surroundings. We didn't get in the water as we just explored caves, trails, and little critters (see my picture of a spider😎). I highly encourage you get tickets in advance. I also mean you must have tickets in order to enter. What I also mean by this is that you need tickets to get in unless you are a resident. You pay per vehicle AND per person. We payed 22 dollars and change. 10 for the car and five per person. The park entrance monitor was very grouchy and seemed hostile 😁. But I said good morning, asked her how she was doing and got a great smile out of her! But she will kick you out if you are not on time and or don't have tickets. I also recommend downloading your QR code BEFORE you leave to the park. Internet is horrible and you will not get in without the QR code from the receipt emailed to you. Parking is horrendous and will cause headaches if you don't get there on time or during your shift. We got lucky and were able to grab two morning tickets, 7-10am. The tickets are sold in three time slots, morning, afternoon and evening. Also be aware that if you are driving to that beach you will be driving the "road to Hana". Be prepared for a long drive (took us 2.5 hours to get there and depends on where you are staying) and plan accordingly. You can just go for an hour or so or parts of your scheduled time frame but you will want at least an hour to explore. The sand was awesome and I really liked the different types of sand. You had more rock towards the back and it got more sand like as you got closer to the water. My two videos will show you what I mean. Don't take the rocks or sand, there is a sign posted to keep people from taking it. When we go back we will definitely go again, and also try and snag a smile. Definitely worth the trip and expensive, just preparing and getting there takes away a star so four stars.
Casey S — Google review
This is a state park with a beach and cabins for rent. Entry and parking are free so go and explore! The park is located west of Hana town. Look for the signs and turn down Waianapanapa Road. It's not a major intersection so you might not even notice it. Drive slow as the beginning part is a residential street. Once at the end, you either make a left towards the beach or right towards the cabins. CABINS: While I haven't stayed in them, I did peek in through the windows of an empty one. They're old, not too clean looking and of course not temperature controlled. I personally would not stay here as they're run by the state, not a hotel company with normal housekeeping duties. Reservations need to be made a few months in advance. BEACH: I've only been to the cliff area behind the cabins which are definitely not for swimming but great for ocean watching and getting fabulous pictures. There are cool cliff formations, gorgeous scenery of the coastline, and even a blowhole. A short, easily walkable trail gives you numerous vantage points. There is a swimmable sandy beach towards the west end but I haven't been there yet. CAVES: There are water-filled caves/lava tubes which you can check out safely and easily via foot trails. I've seen some people swimming in them once. SMH, just don't do that. It's so disrespectful to the park and its guests. Be a traveler, not a tourist.

Make sure you get your reservations in! It fills up fast! Definitely have to make this a must go on your trip. The views from the cliffs are amazing. Lots of paved pathways for ease of access. And the black sand beach is once in a lifetime.

My impression is duel : from one side I liked the views of the ocean and rocks but from other it’s built on the local cementary you are basically will visit it . Tip : take more water with you it’s extremely humid and hot here . They have restrooms and vending machine you can take cash with you it will help . Reservation required tiles slots are 7-10 10-12:30 12:30 -3 and 3-5 they will check it upon arrival if you like to swim take a swimsuit with you or simply wear it for the black sand beach

Get reservations and pay ahead of time. Beautiful place to stop with bathrooms. The black sands are cool to see. Easy stairs to get to beach area. Well maintained and clean. The bathrooms are better than you find in the area. Looks like you can camp here too. There are also memorial and ancestral grounds so be aware of where you are. So happy we stopped here. Just wish it wasn’t on the stupid road to Hana.
TheDoug801 — Google review
Very cool park. The black sand was amazing. Some little caves to explore along the first beach too and some tidal pools at the second beach with lots of crabs to see. Reservations are needed. You can arrive at any time within your slot but need to leave promptly at the end time. We reserved the 7-10 slot; arrived around 8 and it wasn't too crowded until 9 or so. The earliest slot is the least crowded but it's 2 hours away from most lodgings so an early start is needed. Bathrooms and showers were well kept. Overall the facilities were well maintained

this beach was on of my favorite beaches in this area. there was SO MUCH to see when snorkeling — schools of fish, coral reefs, and turtles! it was gorgeous. the only complaint was the drop off being so drastic and deep.

Low effort, high reward spot for snorkeling! We went a few times throughout our trip and it was gorgeous each time. Easy parking. A very popular spot but once we were in the water, it didn't matter much to us. Our favorite time was around 7:30am-9am when we saw a turtles and lots of fish. As you walk towards the beach from the parking lot, turn right and NOT left for the reefs to snorkel around. You can get in the water close to the right of the parking lot, no need to walk too far down the sand to get great reef views.

Maluaka Beach, also known as Turtle Town, is a popular destination in south Maui. It's famous for its Hawaiian green sea turtles and abundant marine life. The beach offers soft sand, calm blue waters perfect for snorkeling, and restrooms for visitors' convenience. The shallow reefs with small sea caves are the favorite resting spots for turtles, making it a great place to spot them.
Loved the ease of access to a nice and quiet beach. Came here on a Tuesday morning and snorkeled with sea turtles and colorful fish. The trees provided a nice balance of shade and sun for those looking for both options for the different folks in your group. We got lucky and snagged a great street parking spot near the drop off loop which made it easy to carry our beach gear to the beach.

Beautiful almost private beach. There are 2 entrances to the beach. North side has limited street parking and drop off point. South side has parking and walkway to the beach. Also Restroom and Showers located on the south side. North and south side are connected via walkway of the hotel. Great place to watch sunset. Soft white sand all throughout. Snorkeling reefs on the north side.

Very cool little beach. Not nearly as crowded as other beaches nearby. Offers great snorkeling, sunbathing and some shade is also available. Only 4 parking spots at drop off point. However there is public parking a block up the hill across from the church with public restrooms. Its a very short 1 min walk to beach. Its best to drop your stuff at the drip spot, park car and walk down. Sandy beach is 50 yards from drop spot. Aloha!

Big Beach, also known as Oneloa Beach or Makena Beach, is a vast sandy beach located in Makena Beach State Park on southwest Maui. It offers clear waters and opportunities for snorkeling with the chance to spot turtles and various fish species. The beach features a lifeguard on duty, restrooms, food trucks near the parking area, and ample parking space. However, visitors should be cautious of strong waves that can pull and crash hard.
Plenty of space to spread out, but..... - The waves are abusive and the danger signs should be minded. This was by far, the roughest beach visit, every visit. - The wind is like sitting in a human sand blasting machine. Stay closer to the hedge line if you can, you be prepared to hunker down. - Not much in the way of snorkling, just open space and a very unique scenery to enjoy.

The only red sand beach I’ve ever seen. I absolutely loved it. There didn’t seem to be anyone swimming, just surfing. There was a little place to eat that had huli chicken, but it was closed when we arrived around 3:40 pm this past Saturday. There was a large parking lot but you had to drive through what was essentially a one way area with cars parked on each side. Cars were driving each way, in and out of the parking lot. I definitely recommend checking out this beautiful sand.

Very pretty stop/beach, but not for swimming. You can wet your feet and take some great pictures as you can see Alua Island from the beach, but no swimming. Water is rough and it's not safe. There are signs about it too.
Ana S — Google review
Not technically red sand as that beach is by the Huli chicken shop. The beach has some nice shade trees to set up under and the beach is mostly sand. That said the currents were strong and multiple warning signs were up warning of drownings. The waves were also unpredictable and the occasional one would make it all the way up the beach. Definitely not the best beach for small children and constant supervision is needed. But the scenery was nice and the island off shore has lots of birds flying around it.

We came here after our hike at Haleakala on the way back to Hana. The red sand beach was beautiful. There were just a few people on the beach. Quiet and peaceful. We came back early the next morning for sunrise and the sky did not disappoint! Gorgeous, quiet spot. Nothing fancy, just nature. Getting down to the beach requires some uneven footing. There is a thatched hut with a picnic table with nice views.

I hadn't heard much about this beach when researching places to visit on the Road to Hana, but my audio driving guide mentioned it as a suggested stop and I'm so glad it did! It has both rocky shores and sandy beach and the red rocks around the beach give the sand a beautiful color. I didn't get in the water because I was traveling alone and there were a lot of signs warning about the dangers of the surf, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment at all. It wasn't too busy when I visited, so it was very peaceful there as well. Loved it!

Napili Bay is a stunning sandy beach in Maui, known for its soft and expansive stretch of sand that's perfect for families. The bay offers fair snorkeling opportunities, especially beyond the waves where shallow coral sections reveal numerous sea creatures. Visitors can also spot sea turtles in the area. Additionally, nearby The Gazebo restaurant is recommended for its delicious macadamia nut pancakes and coconut syrup with breathtaking ocean views.
Its a longer beach, and we loved swimming in the bay body surfing. Pretty sure we glanced at a sea turtle in the waves while we were out there. Just be safe! Stopped right into The Sea House, wet and sand from the beach without any issues. Sat at the bar there for Happy Hour and it was perfect!

Amazing small cove beach. Stunning views, calm waters and great snorkeling with a beautiful reef close to the shore. We saw a lot of different fish and also turtles! The beach is a bit hidden and make sure to enter via the public access path and not through the private properties that are on the beachfront. No restrooms or lifeguards but there was a small snack shop nearby. There is a Boss Frogs location about a mile away if you need snorkel gear.

Went there for paddle boarding at an early hour, with hopes of calm waters. It was only ok. Not worth the venture. The water was calm enough but only within the bay, it was a lot of going in circles to stay on my board. This review is for paddling only.

This was our first beach in Maui and it did not disappoint. Super calm waters and lots of reef to explore so the snorkeling was phenomenal (we saw turtles). We did get here early at 8AM but at around 11AM it got pretty full so I recommend getting first thing in the morning.

We had a great time. My son loves snorkeing and there were many large green turtles, eels, the state fish with a funny name and other colorful fish. It was not overcrowded when we went later in the day and the water was delightful. The more you float and don't splash around the more you see.

Beautiful Beautiful beach. Street parking is there for the finding and a short walk. Lots of resorts that have food for purchase. You'll have to use a resort wash station for clean up. Beautiful beach with amazing waves for boogie boarding. Parking was a big pricey (~$30) but it was good for all day, and the beach shower was out of order when we went (3/20), so we left a bit sandy. But the experience was still incredible and worth the drive from our hotel in Kaanapali.

Off in the distance you can see part of Kapalua Golf- the bay course as well.

Lovely public sand beach with a life guard on duty. It was not crowded with this being a Tuesday afternoon during the school year. The beach is framed by two outcroppings on each end offering protection from direct ocean waves. There were several food trucks and a permanent burger shack up a slight incline on the Ritz Carlton golf course. Plenty of options for a leisurely day.
Mike S — Google review
Nice beach with soft sand. Reefs on the right are nice for snorkling. Left side is more sand and good for kids. There is some free parking and also paid Bathrooms, tables, and lifeguard. Loved it as parking was right there and no long walks to get to beach.
Allen B — Google review
One of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever been to. Clean beach, restroom facilities. Only downside is paying for parking.
John H — Google review
What a horrible beach experience. The wind was insane (there is almost no wind currently at our resort beach in Kahana), the shore breaking waves was awful, and the parking is horrendous. Had I known how awful this experience would be, I wouldn't have followed my in-laws here, and just stayed in Kahana instead!

Signage isn't great, but they do have life guards. We witnessed a med-evac today (praying for the patient). The beach is nice, food, drinks, and bathrooms close by. The ocean is six shades of blue here, and you can see Molokai in the distance. Near to the Ritz Carlton Resort, golf course, and Makaluapuna Point. REMINDER-Wear SUNSCREEN! Bring WATER!

Slaughterhouse Beach, also known as Mokuleia Bay, is a hidden gem tucked into a cove accessible via stairs and a short trail. Despite its secluded location, it's popular among locals and visitors for body-surfing. The beach offers beautiful shades of water and plenty of sand for sunbathing. While there's no dedicated parking lot, roadside parking is available. The area is known for its scenic drive with winding roads leading to the beach.
Awesome beach for snorkeling, body surfing, and just lounging on the sand. Pretty limited parking, which keeps the beach from getting too crowded. Rented some snorkel gear in town and swam with a turtle within 10 minutes of getting in the water. Tons of fish to see and the water was perfect and not too choppy. I would definitely recommend this beach if you want to find some awesome sea life on your snorkeling adventure!

We love coming here when we're in Maui. Every time I've been there are very little people. It's a hidden gem. Very limited parking off the side of the highway but we've never had any issues. We have seen honu every time we've gone. The waves aren't too rough but also not the smoothest. But still friendly enough to get in. FYI there is stairs to get down to the beach
Chasen C — Google review
Great beach for swimming, snorkeling or sunbathing. Was easy to get in and out with snorkeling gear. Saw a turtle on the beach! Only downsides were pay to park and there wasn’t a ton of reef to explore.
Brad H — Google review
Nice secluded beach around a cove-like area accessible from stairs near the parking area on the main road. Not very crowded. Really nice winds and waves. Randomly had chickens walking around. Unfortunately there's no changing rooms or showers

Fantastic! Great for snorkeling and not too crowded. We went in the morning and had some great weather. There is a long staircase to get down to the beach, but easily done.

Amazing snorkeling spot. Small beach, but will get busy. Go early in the morning to secure a good spot on the beach and parking, as parking is sparse. Wild chickens running around.

This was our favorite beach we visited on our trip to Maui. A quick drive from our hotel, we went twice. It has plenty of sand available for groups to spread out and relax in the sun. The water is warm and clear and we saw turtles and fish every time we went snorkeling. The waves here can get very big! Perfect for body surfing or boogie boarding.

Makena Cove, also known as Secret Beach, is a secluded and idyllic spot in Maui that has become increasingly popular among tourists. Tucked between houses and behind a stone wall, this hidden oasis offers clear waters, white sand, palm trees, and lava rocks lining the shore. It's a perfect location for weddings and catching breathtaking sunset views.
Makena Cove is a hidden gem with stunning scenery, dramatic lava rock formations, and crystal-clear water. It's a popular spot for weddings and photography, especially at sunrise and sunset. The cove is small, so it can feel crowded, but the views make it worth the visit. Parking is limited to roadside spots, and access is through a small opening in a stone wall. Swimming isn't ideal due to strong waves and rocky terrain, but it's a great place to take in Maui’s beauty. Arrive early for the best experience and bring what you need, as there are no amenities nearby.
Shane P — Google review
Great little cove with easy access from the road. Google perfectly brings you right by the little alleyway that opens onto the beach. A few little rocks to step down and then you’re in tide pool Heaven.

This is a public beach cove accessible to anybody. You can reach it by a marked cross walk in the road that leads to a gap in a stone fence. You can't see the cove from the road, but it's only 100 feet from the road. Parking is on the side of the road and free. Expect people around sunset. You might even find photographers. It's great for easy fun swimming in the waves that crash through the rocks. You can also jump off the cliffs thanks to the water being so deep.

I'll make this quick and simple because you shouldn't spend your time on your phone reading lengthy reviews 😎🤙🏼 let me save you time. This place is also called Secret Beach because it's kind of hidden and small.✅ Parking is very limited. ‼️ Park on the side of the road. Be mindful of the parking limitations/instructions to avoid getting a citation. You will see cars on the roadside; park there if you see a parking space. ✅ Visit in the morning ✅ it's so relaxing and peaceful. Also visit for the sunset ✅ it's beautiful 😍 My wife and I did both 😍 see pictures and videos. 💯 If you're lucky, you'll spot sea turtles 🐢🤩 Not too busy. Good for relaxing only. I wouldn't recommend swimming. ‼️ No rinse ❌ but it's worth it. ✅ If you like to walk over the rocks, be sure to bring water shoes. Also be very careful. It can be slippery. ‼️ If you have any questions, feel free to follow me here. Enjoy! 😎🤙🏼 Mahalo!

I've had the pleasure of photographing numerous elopements and intimate weddings at this beach. It's a stunning location, with a few different options for placement of the wedding party during the ceremony and some variety for bridal portraits. There are lava rocks, palm trees, and a small amount of white sand! As beautiful as it is, there are a few downsides to choosing this beach as a ceremony site, and it's not the right spot for every wedding. It is small and it can be crowded during certain times. I love helping my clients choose the right location for their ceremony. Aloha!

Kaanapali Beach is a popular destination in Maui, known for its beautiful shoreline and a variety of activities. Visitors can enjoy the beachwalk, swimming, and snorkeling while taking in the scenic views. The area is also home to resorts, eateries, and shopping options. One of the accommodations available at Kaanapali Beach is the Hyatt Vacation Club, offering beachfront access and amenities such as outdoor swimming pools and a 24-hour fitness center.
It is a nice beach with good facilities for food, drinks, and ice cream. However, the sea bottom is full of coral and stones, so you can easily injure your legs. Be very careful. You can rent equipment and even book a tour here.

It’s like small city with beautiful greenery 1. Maui crafts and gifts fair happening. 2. There is huge golf course. 3. A very small parking in-front of actual beach entry like 10 slots in front of it (go straight, you will find more parking). There will be lots of other beach entrances. 4. Huge resorts and great place to chill and enjoy beach for. 5. Went during weekdays and less crowd than what I expected.

It’s one of the most beautiful beaches in Maui. We saw a few turtles and some beautiful fish while swimming so snorkeling is great there. Tons of space and clear water. There are rocky cliffs on the right side of the beach for some cliff diving but be careful because it’s quite slippery.

We went to visit for 2 weeks last month and the beach so beautiful, breathtaking and so clear. The water was not quite calm and too much waves but still did not stop my hubby to be in the water. We stayed at Marriott Ocean Lahaina so the resort right by the ocean. We observed a sleeping sea lion at one time. There’s so many upscale resorts along the beach and nice restaurants as well as its walking distance to Whalers Village. We enjoyed riding the Maui Bus. Will definitely be back, it was a quite memorable first time visit to Maui but we been to Hawaii 4 times already. Love Hawai’i so peaceful…

Gorgeous beach lined with resorts so it does get busy. You've got a decent chance to see turtles here at the end by the black rock cliffs.
Kyle K — Google review
Kāʻanapali Beach is nice to look at, but honestly not a must-see when visiting Maui. The surf was pretty rough and the entry into the water was rocky and not great for swimming. It felt overly hyped up compared to other beaches on the island. We did get to see a Hawaiian Mono Seal which is incredibly rare. My photo of the beach is also extremely edited. If you’re in the area, I’d recommend heading just a little further north to Black Rock Beach — it has much better snorkeling, clearer water, and even some fun cliff jumping. Definitely a more memorable spot than Kāʻanapali.

Visitors can watch surfers from the Hookipa Lookout or enjoy the beach where Hawaiian green sea turtles often come to rest on the shore.
Cool beach to watch the surfers and the wind surfers. Less so for swimming. The bonus as you get to see lots of sea turtles. Nobody follows the rules and doesn’t keep a 10 foot distance as they should even though the section is cordoned off. So sad to see that people can not read simple instructions. Well worth going to this cool beach. Free parking and lots of locals so it must be good right?!

Good parking and nice to sit and watch the surfers. It’s beautiful to look at because of the turtles and the ocean! But it is not a swimming beach. And it is good for surfing only if you are a well-seasoned surfer. Lots of rocks at the shore!

Beautiful beach to see the sea turtles, watch surfers in action and just enjoy what the ocean has to offer. A little too rough for snorkeling or a relaxing dip, but fun for buggie boarding and offers a pretty view for the sunset.

Good parking, easy to walk down. We went just to see the turtles resting on the beach which was easy because there are a ton just laying there plain to see. Photos are good to take and the beach looked clean although we didn’t go on it. Not much else to say, but it is cool to see all the turtles just hanging out if you’re in the area.

Nice long park along the ocean with some beach but the environment lends itself to attract the surfing crowd. Lot of boards and windsurfing taking place with a pretty consistent surf coming off the windward side of Maui. There are bathrooms and shelters available from the sun. The park is right outside Paia at the start of the Road to Hana. Plenty of parking if the beach area is not overly crowded. Enjoy the experience!

Lovely low tide beach with beginner friendly snorkeling. It was our favorite beach in Maui!

Narrow stretch of beach. No designated parking but plenty available just along the road, so you can park right in front of your beach spot for a much shorter gear haul than at many beaches. A fair number of trees for shade. We went for the snorkeling but were disappointed. Very easy entry because of stretches of sand between the rocks and coral. The visibility was good but just not many fish. We tried several stretches but maybe we just didn't find the right place? No sand showers or porta-potties--I guess they'd rather have people peeing in the ocean.
Bethany M — Google review

Nice protected Cove where you can easily get into snorkel. It was low tide when I was there, so many of the corals were close to the surface. Be careful not to touch them and watch out for sea urchins on the bottom. There is a rocky Beach but also a sand covered entryway where you can walk into the water easily. If you're more experienced and swimming and snorkeling. This is a good place for a beginner. We went there and there were very few people there so this was not a crowded place to be. Parking was free, and there are porta potties to use if you need to use the restroom. There's a historic site there of an Old Sugar Factory as you enter the beach.

I'm not sure where some of the pictures in these reviews came from but I'm glad they didn't dissuade me from going to this beach. This is the perfect beach for young snorkelers of all ages. It has what looks like a natural boat ramp that can be used by babies and some small tide pools if that is too much. On top of that if you wander out a little further the water is shallow and clear with some rocks and small reefs to explore. We didn't see a lot of good fish here but the reefs were nice and there are plenty of small minnows to chase. This is definitely a hit for kids on their first snorkel adventure.

While swimming conditions can be windy, there is a protected cove on the east end and a saltwater lagoon on the west end, making it suitable for families with kids.
Fantastic Sandy Beach with rolling crashing waves.. Great for your boogie board.. or for a nice long walk in the surf. I was just there on a Friday afternoon and there was lots of people playing volleyball. There was a large group of about 35 people playing the drums.. it was quite enthralling to watch. Eventually, a large throng of people started to show up dancing up a storm.. I left when the sun was going down.. I guess that's when most people were showing up.. it could have been quite a party.. The parking area was over full and there were 50 plus cars that were on the highway.. So if you like to party on Friday nights on the beach.. this might be the place. It seems quite calm the rest of the time.

Beautiful place to visit! There is a hiking trail but you need to have close toe shoes b/c vocanic rocks path. Can get to the next beach. The path has no cover so bring plentybof water & sunscreen so you don't get burned.

Beautiful place to spend a few hours exploring the coast of Maui. The drive there is an debenture in itself. We were glad we had a Jeep. The road is rough! You can hike for hours or just visit the bay. The sign says spinner dolphins are active in the mornings. We were there about 11 and didn’t see any. We saw turtles. Great spot for pictures. The black lava rock against the white coral and sand beaches is amazing. And the water sprays from the waves through the lava tubes is mesmerizing!! Bring water and sunscreen. There are shaded parts of the hike (especially in the wooded areas with the goats), but much of it is open in the sun! Wear tennis shoes, the lava rock is rough and sharp. It was a great day trip! Only 20 minutes from Wailea village. You will loose all cel service but once you’re on the road, you can’t miss the destination. Parking was easy and not full.

Great area to hike. Four miles along lave flows, rugged beaches and a beautiful wood line with wild goats. Wear closed toed shoes and bring plenty of water

So cool to see the site of the last lava flow on Maui! Easy hike/stroll through the lava fields. Saw some goats and a lava tube. Dry area so our shoes didn't get messed up like they do on other hikes.

Hāna Bay Beach Park is a picturesque waterfront park located along Maui's scenic Road to Hana. The narrow, winding highway through the rainforest offers panoramic views and roadside waterfalls. The beach park itself features a black sand beach, picnic tables, BBQ grills, restrooms, and shallow sandy waters protected by a large headland. It is a popular spot for locals to hang out on sunny weekends and provides a safe option for swimming in calm conditions due to its outer reef protection.
Really beautiful black sand beach. There are many locals who utilize this beach so as a tourist be respectful. This is their home. As a tourist I was able to park easily and walk the small beach to the pier but the pier is closed to the public. Such a beautiful way to end the drive on the road to Hana.

This is a nice beach, dog friendly, no plastic or litter. It's a good beach for families with kids and small groups. The water is shallow but watch out for rocks. There's no shade provided by trees so bring an umbrella. There is one pavilion you can sit under but it's not on the sand so it's pretty far. I would come back here, not necessarily to swim but it would be nice to picnic.
Kaydence L — Google review
This is a very relaxing place to hang out while in Hana. It's normally very busy especially on the weekends, filled with mostly Hana residents as well as tourists. FACILITIES: There is a small covered pavillion with wooden picinic tables. I'm not sure if you have to reserve them or they're first come, first served. There's also a few uncovered cement tables & benches spread out on the grass area for all to use. There used to be a snack shop near the restrooms but I believe they closed years ago. As far as restrooms go, they're located in the building across from the pavilion, and was very clean. I was also surprised to find soap & paper towels well stocked - a definite plus! BEACH: The sand is a mix of white & black resulting in a dirty color. The area near the pier is great for swimming as its naturally protected. The opposite area towards the west is very rough & choppy. TIP: No lifeguard on duty.

Hana Bay Beach Park is a good, uncrowded spot with black sand, mobile restrooms, and showers. A nice place to swim and relax.

Nice beach.. Made it here by accident after Google Maps said it was the access point to the Red Sand Beach, it's not.
Luis D — Google review
Beautiful rainforest and waterfalls! We went to Hana then kept going around the south side of Maui. The road past Hana was rough and one lane in places for about 10 miles, then new road. Not for the faint hearted! We circled the whole island in 2 days. I am glad I did it.
Harold W — Google review
Beautiful view from an old fishing village. Locals love this location and hang out for lunch break. Black volcanic sand and rocks, the ocean waves were crashing but we still got our feet wet. Pack a lunch and lots of water because the Road to Hana twists and turns up and down hills with one lane bridges, two way traffic, and road crews working. It’s worth the 2 hour drive each way from Mama’s Fish House.

Black Sand Beach, located in Waianapanapa State Park near the town of Hana, is a popular attraction for visitors. The beach features black volcanic sand and offers a unique and untamed beauty. In addition to the striking black sand, the park also boasts seabird colonies, lava tubes, blowholes, freshwater caves, and a natural stone arch.
The Black Sand Beach is such an amazing experience. Get there at the start of your reservation to truly enjoy the entire time. The waves were crazy the second time we were there so we only went in a little. The short hikes are fun and give you a great view that is unbeatable.
John S — Google review
Visiting Black Sand Beach didn't meet my expectations. We had reservation in advance and were running a little late due to full road closure in two locations on the road to Hana that added 1 hour to our trip. We arrived 20 mins into our reserved time and had a hard time finding a parking. Despite notices about reservation time being for 2 hours only, nobody checks or enforces it, so during the day it's getting crazy. Park employees couldn't be any more rude. They showed with every part of their body how much they hate tourists, their job and everything else... Black sand beach area is very small. It's probably the smallest beach I have ever seen. It gets very overcrowded making this experience not very enjoyable. Waves are rough and swimming is dangerous. Waves can wipe you from your feet in a moment. In fact, a child almost lost his life in front of crowd. If not a stranger and child's mom who run into the water in a moment, the end of that story would be very sad. You cannot swim or snorkel there, just get into the water. Black sand is more like small rocks, not your typical sand. It is pretty and different, but way overrated.
Ana S — Google review
Great place, trails over rocks add some adventure. Reservation is required. If you just want the beach and have time to island hop, Punaluu Beach in the big island is probably better.
Luis D — Google review
A black sand beach complete with green turtles? What's not to love? I was so happy to visit this beach that had turtles right at the shore to observe (from at least 20 feet away!). It's very cool to see black sand created by lava flows, too. I didn't go into the water when I was there, but it was still a sweet, short visit.
Terri G — Google review
what an stunning piece of heaven, it feels exotic, from the color of the sand, the color of the palm trees. and resting green turtles, chances of spotting resting turtles are quite high. This is a very rare landscape. The black sand and the casted sky makes this a great spot for photography
Paola L — Google review
Worth it to visit this BLACK SAND BEACH Absolutely beautiful... a few minutes walk along the path through a little park and down a few steps but worth it. The views walking to it are stunning. There are a few cats in the car park and in the park. They will come up to you especially if you're eating or have food in your hands. There are toilets in the park. The pebbles are abit difficult to walk on but they were nice to sit on as they were really warm from the sun. There is black sand walking closer to the water.

Mākena State Park is a hidden gem on the leeward side of Maui, offering an idyllic escape for families and beach lovers alike. This stunning park features two main beaches: Big Beach (Oneloa Beach) and Little Beach (Puu Ola Beach). With its expansive stretch of soft sand and gentle waves, Big Beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying breathtaking coastal views.
This is from Big Beach, the park is huge and includes a couple other options if you go a little further down the road. Quick notes for Big Beach: - The water here is no joke, the waves can be quite abusive and the danger signs are not kidding. - The wind was also extremely hard to handle. We learned to stay closer to the hedge line. If you are out on the sand, you are going to be pelted with sand. It's like a human sand blasting zone. - The beach is huge, plenty of space to enjoy and spread out. The back ground and side facing mountains give it a unique landscape. - Not really anything to see snorkeling. Just come for the sunbathing, giant waves and open space.
Justin C — Google review
BIG BEACH: The sand is soft and white, with lots of square footage so it never feels crowded. The waves are generally big which is great for body/boogie boarding but not for anything else. If you haven't gotten slammed by a wave here, you've never experienced Big Beach lol! It's fun to watch the bodyboarders do tricks and catch waves. There are lifeguards on duty now, thankfully. Shade on the sand is non-existent though there are a few tables under the thorny kiawe trees but it's a bit far from the water. LITTLE BEACH: This is more than just a clothing optional beach. It's also home to a growing number of bongo drummers, dancers, and their audience, especially on Sundays when it can get very crowded come the afternoon. Sunset brings cheers and applause. It's very secluded due to difficult access. It's a short, steep hike up a rocky gravel trail with a gorgeous view of Big Beach at the top. The white sand beach is well protected from winds due to the volcanic cone it abuts to. The water is super clear, the sea floor has soft sand and clear of loose rocks. The view is killer! Kahoolawe, Molokini, and Lanai are in plain view. There are 2 reefs on both ends of the beach but snorkeling is not recommended. Waves are normally medium sized but can get pretty big and choppy depending on conditions. It's good for swimming and great for body/boogie boarding. There are no lifeguards here. TIP: The only restrooms are the port-a-potties near the parking lot and there are no showers. OVERALL: Great for boogie/bodyboarding and people-watching.
Maui T — Google review
Aka-Big Beach. Nice beach with lots of room to spread out. When it's windy though, the sand striking your body doesn't feel pleasant. $10 per car + $5 per person to hangout here, it was worth it (there is a pay station that accepts cc's). The surf can be a little rough but certainly manageable for water activity. Bring your snorkel gear, there is coral reef you may want to explore.
Jeff A — Google review
A beautiful beach - unfortunately we could spend only 30 minutes as it was on the last day of our trip in Maui. Water was beautiful - good spot for swimming and lifeguards were present. We were fortunate to see a seal. It costs 10$ to park and 5$ per person. Public porta potty restrooms available.

Kamaole Beach Park I is part of a trio of beautiful beach parks in Kihei, Maui. It offers fine white sand and excellent swimming conditions, making it a favorite spot for families. The park features calm waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling, with rocky outcrops providing habitats for marine life. Visitors can also enjoy the expansive shoreline and may even spot sea turtles in the area.
Loved this beach, easily found parking and very accessible. In the morning, the sand and water were perfect for us and our 3 year old. Wind picks up making the water rougher in the afternoon. There is a shower and washroom by the parking lot.

Great beach to stand up paddle out from. Recommend going super early to avoid the wind. 7am is a good time. If you hug the rocks and have a seat on your board you’re bound to see some turtles. Water is so clear and shallow you can see the coral and all its details. Not a very crowded beach even on weekends. 10/10 recommend and very kid friendly
Cailin S — Google review
This beach has the most breathtaking sunsets! It is never too crowded and the beach is very well maintained.

Sunsets are the best here. Has shower to wash off sand at the top before going down. Stairs are full of sand which is hot so be prepared for that to burn. Couple of picnic tables and small waves. Water is better than kam II. Across from a store that sells drinks and food and a mini shopping center. No shade or chairs. Being your own eveything. Will see a few turtles here and there.
Cya V — Google review
This beach was GREAT!!!! not too busy, easy to get too, soft sand and clear water. No chairs or umbrella so bring your own but they do have a life guard. There is a store you can pick up some food from RIGHT across the street and shaved ice. You can also get floating toys$5-10 and snorkeling gear for $15 at the store. There are bathrooms (no soap) and a outdoor shower to clean up on.

Great beach to catch the sunset. Though, keep in mind, that there is a decent crowd that has the same idea. The crowd builds up an hour before sunset, and leaves right after.

Pāʻia Secret Beach, also known as Paako Cove, is a hidden gem nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood behind a lava rock wall. Despite being one of the most photographed and beautiful beaches in Hawaii, it remains relatively undiscovered. The calm waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling, but visitors should be mindful of high currents and heed warning signs.
It's an absolute special place. Also known as Baldwin Beach . Safe haven for locals and sea turtles. Both need space and to be respected. Beach has the softest sand and clear water. Please use reef safe sun tan lotion Please, take all trash out, including your doggies poop.

A smaller and more remote beach slightly east of Baldwin Beach. Access via a short walking path through a homeless occupied forest opens up to a less crowded and clothing optional beach.

Great clothing optional beach. Not as crowded as Little Beach and lots of great places to sunbathe. Water is nice for swimming, while sometimes a bit wavy when windy out. We always see at least one turtle while we are here.

Gorgeous little clothing optional beach. Easy walk from the parking lot at Lower Pā'ia Park. The crowd was quite young, 60% men/40% women. The older single men mostly stayed towards the west side and there were several groups of young men and women enjoying the sun and surf completely nude. Located just off Front Street in Lahaina, 3 miles south of Ka'anapali, Baby Beach is a long stretch of calm, reef-protected beach with darker sand and a view of other islands. It's lined with tall palm trees and offers street parking. While it can be narrow during high tide, it's perfect for small groups and morning sessions. There are no restrooms on site.
This place is great for first-time snorkeling. It is a pretty safe cove surrounded by rocks. Would've been great if there wasn't a jackhammer fishing there. Overall, people were letting their babies play in the water, i got bit by a Picasso trigger fish, wasn't to bad, I guess he was mad lol. Great experience!

If you aren't a swimmer then this is the snorkeling destination for you. While you don't get to see all the varieties that the other destinations afford, this might just blossom your beginnings of snorkeling. Make sure to hit it when the waters are calm though. Respect the signs for locals, there is plenty of parking available nearby. The entrance is somewhat hidden so look carefully. If you need snorkeling gear then Snorkel Bob's nearby has great equipment and friendly service. Enjoy the experience as we did. Water shoes are a must.

Visited Baby beach whilst we stayed in Lahaina with my partner in May 2023. We both loved it the conditions were perfect for snorkeling and swimming. Baby beach is perfect for kids and beginners for snorkeling, the variety of fish species that you can see is amazing. Saw Green sea turtles one swam past me whilst snorkeling just a couple meters away, a sight I will never forget. I wished I got it on camera but went into the sea a day or before and forgot my cell phone was in my pocket, It's fair to say my cell phone didn't like that. We walked along the beach which was lovely with views towards the island of Lanai which were beautiful. There isn't alot of parking but it's never usually that busy, but it's great for families for a day at the beach. You may even find some sea shells whilst your snorkeling. I would highly recommend a day at baby beach, but not sure if you can with the wild fires that devastated Lahaina 😓 I would chech first. I am super honoured to have been able to visit baby beach and Lahaina. Steve and Jacqui fae Fife.

I used to frequent this beach a lot as a child, mainly due to the always calm waters and soft sand. "Baby Beach" stretches from the Mala Wharf south towards Lahaina. The entire beach is super calm due to a protective reef. Parking is a pain because private homes line the beach, so it's all residential street parking. There are no restrooms or facilities of any kind, so you gotta rough it! There are awesome sunsets and a killer view of Lana'i. TIP: The north end of the beach near the houses unfortunately attracts tourist weddings. We were bombarded by no less than 3 on one afternoon. What a sunset ruiner!
Maui T — Google review
This is a really wonderful beach, but it is small. The waves are small and calm and the water is very shallow for quite a ways out. There is a reef so great for snorkeling and seeing fish. There is a small homeless camp that has a few unhoused persons who were respectful and were cleaning the beach when we were there. They were totally not an issue for me or my family. There are also quite a few chickens around which were fun to watch! Right next to it is a cemetery so if you park next to that, you’re in the right spot.
Julia H — Google review
Best beach in Maui, IMO. If you want tranquil water with Awesome snorkeling, this is the spot.

Both week days and weekends we were there. Free beach access. Calm waters for kids and older people. Sandy beach with light waves. Snorkeling resulted in fish of different colors but not many. Saw a few sea turtles from this location no far off shore. Dogs on beach living their beat life with the families. Friendly and safe. Took 2 chairs and a cooler. Beautiful beach to relax and het a tan. No restrooms. No life quard. Free Parking along street. No beach parking lot. Had no problem with parking. Visited about 7 times on our month vacation.

Nestled in a remote area of one of the world's most isolated island chains, Little Beach is a hidden gem with bright red sand formed from ancient volcanic material. This secluded cove is surrounded by gnarled trees and pounded by giant Pacific breakers, creating a unique and stimulating environment for beachgoers. While nudity is prohibited on state park beaches, the rules are more relaxed at Little Beach, where topless sunbathers can often be seen.
Absolutely beautiful beach. Not crowded and has a unique island charm that's hard to put into words. The majestic sea turtles are happy to hang out with the people. They walk up next to you and lay down, take a nap. So nice to see!

Makena State Park (Big Beach to Secret Beach & Beyond) Hot, humid, and hilariously unforgettable. Makena State Park brings the full Maui experience—from the golden sands of Big Beach to the surprise cameo of tan-line-free beachgoers at Little Beach. Expect a short but steep climb over lava rock between the two shores—more of a scramble than a hike, but worth every step for the jaw-dropping views and people-watching potential. The tropical air is thick, the sun relentless, and the vibe? Somewhere between paradise and a nudist daydream. Bring water, leave judgment at home, and prepare for a wild blend of nature and…nature lovers. Perfect in its own steamy, scandalous way.

Probably my favorite experience of the whole trip. We went on Sunday for the beach party. It was amazing. The openness of everyone was refreshing. The drum circle was amazing. Good vibes all around. Climbing the rocks was definitely easier while it was still light out but I would recommend 10/10. Would definitely go back on a Sunday.

Totally enjoyed my time at this beach! Clothes are completely optional so be warned! The sand in this place is just wonderful and plenty of it too. You do have to claim a bit to get to this side of the beach. There is some trails in the back of the beach that connect you to the other side of the park, if you have time you should walk along the trails. Often no one is back there. You can see Molokini and Lanai from here. The sunsets are beautiful and sometimes there is a drum circle when the sun goes down. Pretty rad place!

Kaulahao Beach, also known as Tavares Beach, is a small and quiet spot located near Paia town. It's not ideal for swimming due to the large lava rocks close to the shore, but it's a great place to observe Hawaiian green sea turtles sunbathing on the sand. Visitors can catch a glimpse of these magnificent creatures coming onto the beach after 4 p.m., but it's important to keep a distance of at least 10 feet from them.
Great little beach, turtles there any hour of the day. You can see them swimming to shore, and basking in the sun. While we were there, around 1 PM, there were about 10 turtles on the beach. Great waves, and an amazing place to spend a few hours of your day. Located close to Paia, a great location to visit, and then grab a bite, or a drink after. Definitely a must on your trip to Maui.

We saw so many turtles here…. It was amazing. Would not recommand swimming because of the hooks of the fisher in the water. Just drive by and say Hi to these beautiful turtles
Fanny C — Google review
Kaulahao Beach was recommended to us by a few locals in the Paia shops, and they were right — we got to see several sea turtles on the beach! 🐢 It’s a nice, more local spot with people fishing and a laid-back atmosphere, not overly crowded with tourists. The only frustrating part was watching some visitors ignore the posted signs asking people to keep their distance from the turtles. It’s a privilege to see them up close, and I wish everyone respected that. Still, this beach was a highlight of our trip and definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area.
Andrew C — Google review
Beautiful beach, great waves AND we counted like 30 turtles for real!!!! It was awesome watching them basking in the sun and swimming in the ocean!!

Nice little beach where you can get a good sighting of turtles. Like everyone else saying, please respect the distance requirement to not disturb the nature but I actually recommend coming later in the day if you want to see more turtles as we found that returning near the evening gave us more sightings and we got to see them come ashore too.
Phil L — Google review
Nice place to see the turtles coming up onto the beach after 4 p.m. This location is also known as Tavares Beach. You have to stay at least 10 ft away from the turtles. One can do a selfie using the zoom on a camera that looks perfectly fine 10 ft or more away. What bothered me the most was the native people who hang around the beach would get onto the Tourists who get too close to the turtles, yet some of these natives (especially the younger adults) get extremely close to the turtles.

The surrounding area offers charming condos with modern interiors and private lanais for enjoying the tropical landscaping. This beach park is just across the street from Maui Kamaole, a low-density project featuring beautiful landscaping, pools, tennis courts, and easy access to shopping and dining in Wailea.
Love this beach and all the Kamaole beaches! If you want some shade you’re basically out of luck but the sand here is awesome (as it is at most Maui beaches). Great beach for boogie boarding. Lifeguard was very attentive and keen on preventing accidents. The main beach has rocky areas on either side that the lifeguard warns about regularly. We were there in January and around 2 the wind gets quite intense. Overall a great beach. We went back for a second go! Other reviews say there is a playground, but it is just a swing set. Luckily, the swings are in the shade which makes a nice break!

Nice beach. Not too crowded. Lots of grassy space for functions. Bathrooms are decent and there’s a lifeguard station too and they really watch and let you know if you’re playing too close to rocks in the water. Lost my sunnies there and one of the guards went out two days in a row snorkeling to try to find them for me. Great people.

Kamole Beach was absolutely stunning with the Kaheawa Wind warms in the backdrop, wide beach strip with crashing waves and swarms of people enjoying their winter break in heartwarming warm warm Pacific ocean. What stands out for this park is on-duty lifeguard tower and beautiful park with picnic tables with playground equipped with swings, slides, shaded lawns with huge plumeria trees, restrooms and showers to clean off the sand. The park also has its dedicated parking lot which was a plus. My girls enjoyed building sand castle and riding the crashing waves. One needs to be a bit careful with the rocks but overall a great beach to soak in.

Kanaha Beach Park, located between downtown Kahului and the airport, is a mile-long stretch of sand popular for swimming, picnicking, and beach volleyball. The park features designated areas for kite and windsurfing at Kite Beach and the northeast end respectively. It also offers facilities such as restrooms, showers, shaded picnic tables, and unbeatable views of green-glass water and sea cliffs.
This is an absolutely scenic beach park. We were watching the wind surfers, which was really spectacular. There are picknick tables and the beach park was quite crowded. Very clean and peaceful area. Seems to be a very popular spot for gathering and BBQing.

Directly behind the airport you'll find a very windswept beach with a tree filled park between it and the parking area. Great spot to watch surfers of all variety. A bit too windy to enjoy sunbathing though.

Accidentally surprised by this one. We were just looking to pass time while waiting on our flight. Wow, it's gorgeous. It was one of the top places we saw while I'm Maui for the week. Beautiful trees live the beach. Mountain in background. Wind surfers in the distance. This is a hidden gem.

Great spot for kitesurfing. On the spot you can find free public showers, free toilets, free parking, picnic tables, BBQ, fresh air, good vibes and nonetheless a lot of wind in June and July! 🤩

VOR Beach, also known as Kahului Airport Beach, is a delightful hidden treasure nestled on Maui's north shore. This charming spot stands out from the more crowded southern beaches, offering visitors a serene retreat away from the hustle and bustle. To access VOR Beach, you'll meander down a quiet neighborhood road before parking in a sandy turnaround. This petite beach is perfect for snorkeling enthusiasts and those who appreciate nature's beauty.
What a chill place to snorkel and photograph sunset. Not crowded unless you count the parade of honu that come ashore at sunset.

VOR Beach is a quiet, tucked-away spot perfect for those looking to escape the crowds. The beach is small but offers stunning views, calm waters protected by a reef, and excellent snorkeling. It’s a great place to spot sea turtles, especially in the evening. There are no amenities, so bring what you need. Parking is limited, but it’s a peaceful, mostly locals-only spot. If you’re looking for a secluded beach near the airport to relax or fish, this is a hidden gem.

Nice family beach with some easy snorkeling. We were toward the fat south side. Went a couple of times while in the area. Awesome urchin tide pools! Peaceful area to chill at during the night when I needed away from my kids!

Beautiful place, easy access to road, some rocks and very clear relative calm water! There are bathrooms and wash station! There are also a ton of restaurants and cafes around ! It is very clean! The view for the sunset is particularly blocked by an island but still is amazing! Cleanness: very clean Access : easy access to road Parking : plenty on street parking Bathrooms: semi clean! Around: restaurants, cafes, stores and gear rentals

Across the street from the hotel, beautiful beach with stunning water and nice feeling sand, and not super crowded. You can see a lot of ocean life if you go out looking, I'd recommend snorkeling, we saw multiple turtles. Nice views, amazing sunsets, and its near restaurants and a bunch of places for desert (if you like walking), nice waves, but somewhat small. There are outdoor showers so you can clean yourself when you're done, Overall this beach is amazing and a high recommend if you're staying in Kihei.

Hāna Bay is a vast bay surrounded by a black-sand beach and a hilly, tropical cove with a pier and hiking trails. The hill at Ka'uiki on the southeast side of Hāna Bay holds historical and legendary significance, including the story of Maui pushing up the sky to get water from a young woman. Additionally, it's where the son of the fish god Ku'ula created important structures for the people of Hāna.

Small, less-visited bay with moderate waves and a black-sand beach, accessible by foot from many of the nearby hotels and inns. This bay is relatively small with a very minimal beach area - most of the shore was pebbly, not sandy. Would not go out of my way to revisit.

Black Rock Beach, also known as Puu Kekaa in Hawaiian, is a popular sandy beach located in the resort town of Kaanapali on Maui's west coast. The beach features a landmark lava promontory that is perfect for cliff diving and offers some of the best snorkeling spots on the island. However, visitors are advised to be cautious of rip currents when venturing further from the shore.
The best beach we went to in Maui. The sand is soft and the beach is very clean. There’s a good amount of space on the beach itself so you’ll have choices on where you want to lay, but beware it is popular so it will get busier later in the day. Great choice for snorkeling, the water is clear and there’s a good amount of coral and fish to go around. We saw a small group of sea turtles resting when we went a bit further out into the water so that was a huge plus. All around a great beach and we recommend it to those visiting and staying in West Maui.
Amber L — Google review
Best snorkeling spot during our trip! Visited in early August and enjoyed it a lot! Parking was easy (after we realized there were no free open parking). We parked at the Sheraton. You will need to scan and pay online which is super easy, it all connected to your car tag, and time starts and ends when you cross entrance/exit. By the time we parked and were leaving the car we already owe $2.99 haha so move fast people! Joking! It's $2.99 for first 20 minutes and then $2 for every 15 minutes, but if you get something from the bar or shaved ice place by the pool, you will get $16 off (2 free hours). Shaved ice is pretty good there by the way! Beach area is not big and because everyone is snorkeling by the rocks, it was pretty crowded. There were 2 sea turtles despite crowdedness, swimming on and off and around people. Really good place for snorkeling, even on a day that was 6 out of 10 for snorkeling conditions per local report.
Ana S — Google review
There is a nice walking path from the main hotels. Lovely walk. Then arriving to this place is rewarding. This is a public beach with plenty of area to sit. Not shades at the area unless you sit very close to the rock. Snorkeling here is easy and you just need the basic equipment. You can see Turtles and a great variety of fish. Just respect their areas. Don't touch them. Don't stand on the rocks in the water. It is their home. Totally recommended. The sunset is spectacular!
Carlos O — Google review
My absolute favorite beach in the entire world. During sunset the Sun goes behind the rocks and casts a beautiful shade as you get to swim in the evening time. The wind is typically calm but it will push over a cabana that's not weighed down by some sandbags.
Omar E — Google review
Awesome little spot at the north end of Kaanapali beach. You will be able to cliff jump and snorkel here. It was my lucky day to see not one but three sea turtles that hung out and swam with us for hours. Shallow water that lets you snorkel close to shore. Be careful of the current and strong waves or you can get thrown into the sharp rocks. Respect the wildlife and never touch anything. Take what you brought with you. Never leave trash. Beach chairs and umbrellas are available for rent from several vendors along the beach. A umbrella is 40-50 and they bring and set it all up for you. It was my first time being able to swim among turtles and it was a ln amazing experience that I will remember and cherish. I would highly recommend this area because it’s close to lots of food and shops at the whalers village.
Sung C — Google review

Black Rock Beach was amazing! The snorkeling here was some of the best we’ve done — tons of colorful fish and several sea turtles swimming right around us. The water was clear, calm, and easy to get in and out of. Watching people cliff jump off the rock added to the fun atmosphere without feeling too crowded. Definitely a must-visit spot in Maui — 5/5, highly recommend for snorkeling and relaxing!

It's a nice beach but there are a decent number of large rocks in and around the beach and in the water. Not really the best water play beach, and there's also a TON of foot traffic. It must be a popular walking beach for residents because it's a non stop parade of people walking back and forth. Can also get windy here. But also at other times it can be deserted. Very pretty beach too with a great view towards West Maui. The south end is a great snorkel spot as it shares the rocky point with Ulua, one of the best snorkeling spots in South Maui.

While not ideal for swimming due to large waves, it's an excellent place to bask in the sun or take a leisurely stroll along the shore.
This spot is very easy to miss. Drive slow so you can see the entrance. It’s a real great place to visit. There are two pools of water. There was a local guy that was jumping from the top of one of the rock formation on the left side. I’m a great swimmer but the tide was really rough and the rocks are really sharp. I wouldn’t jump. One of the most beautiful hidden beaches! I expected it to be more crowded because it is close to the major tourist area, but there was hardly anyone there when we went. The secret cove is easy to miss because it is ducked off between a few homes, but once you find it, you will be glad you did. It is known for its excellent snorkeling and swimming areas, with an abundance of tropical fish and green sea turtles near the reefs. Additionally, the beach provides a tranquil atmosphere with relatively fewer crowds compared to other beaches in the area.
Nice beach park with plenty of parking for day use when I visited in the late afternoon on a weekend. Great place to watch the sunset. Nice paved walking trails that you can go pretty far past a lot of nice hotels. Even watch a free luau.

Ulua Beach is an excellent place to snorkel on Maui. We've tried many of the different places over the years ( Black Rock, Ahihi, Turtle Town, Airport Beach, Po'olenalena, MM14, Charley Young Beach, Kam 1-3 and others); Ulua beach is our new favorite. As shown in the picture, there is a large reef ( red circle ) to snorkel along with a distinct edge / drop off where you can see tons of coral, fish, sea urchins ( black, red, zebra striped ) as well as turtles with some regularity. There is public parking ( blue and purple lines ), clean bathrooms, and a nice outdoor shower for rinsing off the salt water. If you are in the Kihei or Wailea area and want to snorkel, this is a great place to do it.

Ulua Beach Park in Maui is a tropical paradise that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The crescent-shaped beach boasts soft, golden sand and crystal-clear waters, making it an ideal spot for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. The marine life here is remarkable; you can spot colorful fish and even sea turtles while snorkeling. The park is well-maintained with picnic areas and showers, making it family-friendly. The scenic backdrop of palm trees and lava rocks adds to the charm. Whether you're a water sports enthusiast or just seeking relaxation, Ulua Beach Park is a must-visit on your Maui itinerary.

A lot of small fishes and baby sea urchins by the rock. If you are lucky, big sea turtle may dhow up too!
MEI W — Google review
Ulua beach is located in Wailea. It is one of the few beaches from the Maui’s west coast were you have a chance to find a parking place in the free parking area near the right side of the beach. I think that this beach is usually used by the tourists that live in the big condos complex nearby having their cars parked in front of the condos. The beach is long (300 meters) and large enough so it is not crowded. The right side is very good for snorkeling but when there are no waves. There is an extended reef about 100 m off the shore, but the water over the reef is shallow and snorkeling could be dangerous even were the waves do not appear to be too big. Also there is a traverse current pushing you to the right towards the emerged rocks that are limiting the right side of Ulua beach. In that day there were disturbing waves so we tried to snorkel only on the left side of the reef were the water was deep enough. We had two rounds of snorkeling (about 2.5 hours in total) but we struggled al the time against the lateral pushing current and it is not quite a peaceful snorkel time. Also the water was not very clear. Not so many fish but an interesting underwater landscape. On my snorkeling marking scale in that day the score for Ulua Beach were 4 from a maximum of 5 point. In good weather conditions it cut be a 4.5 snorkeling area.
Eugen B — Google review

Fleming Beach, located on the west shore of Maui, is a popular destination for surfers and bodyboarders. The beach offers amenities such as lifeguards, showers, and picnic tables. Bordered by pine trees, palms, and naupaka plants, it provides a beautiful backdrop for watching the ocean and surfers riding the waves. The fairly long and wide expanse of sand can experience strong winds and great waves depending on the weather.
Awesome beach for boogie boarding. The beach looks north so sunsets will be behind the trees to the west. Still really beautiful and highly recommended. Lifeguards are on duty until late afternoon. Parking is a little tight if you go during the middle of the day but it's easy in the late afternoon.

Fantastic beach—don’t miss it. The waves are incredible—make sure to get in and experience them. Ritz-Carlton guests receive two beach chairs and a parasol per room, which makes relaxing effortless. Fleming Beach has a laid-back vibe, perfect for boogie boarding, surfing, or just relaxing in the sand. My family and I loved the picnic-friendly setting, with plenty of shaded spots to settle in for an afternoon break. The waves can be strong, so swimming depends on the conditions, but the spacious beach makes it great for stretching out and enjoying the view. Whether you're walking the shoreline or just taking in the coastal scenery, it's a solid stop for a quiet beach day.

Jonathan J — Google review
Beautiful beach with easy access and ample parking. Lifeguard on duty, shower/rinse area, and public restrooms (that's NOT a porta potty) available. The day we went, there were signs posted for surfing/boarding to the right of the lifeguard tower and swimming to the left. However it seems they were pretty flexible with that and allowed for some boards to overflow into the swimming side. Only potential downside is the waves can be intimidating. They are medium to large sized and break close to shore. Looks great for surfing and experienced boogie-boarders.

Paia Bay is a charming beach located just off Hana Highway, near the town of Paia in Maui. This rustic sand beach is a favorite spot for bodyboarding and surfing, offering ample space for sunbathing and relaxation. While known for its powerful shorebreak, the summer months bring calmer waters, perfect for swimming and picnicking. Visitors can also enjoy watching surfers and windsurfers while taking in stunning sunset views.
I went here during my short stay on Maui as it was the closet beach walking-wise from my hostel. I got to the beach around 9 am and it was practically empty. I spent a good almost two hours with just me and about 3 or 4 other people on the whole beach. It was quiet except for the waves and some traffic sounds from time to time. There were a few shaded areas, but it was quite windy so I never got too hot at any point. The wind does kick up little sand, but I feel as though getting sandy is inevitable so I didn't mind. The water was cool and eventually, I saw a lot of people body boarding and swimming. I heard there are better beaches in Paia, but like I said, this one was closest and I definitely enjoyed myself. Just off the beach as you enter or exit, there are outdoor showers to rinse your body or feet as you exit. There are also restrooms.

My grandchildren (Maui residents) and my wife and I (not residents) went to this beach to support Surfrider Maui's beach cleanup. The beach is nice and really isn't that dirty, although it's certainly cleaner than when we started. Jason Carter, 39, of Haiku, was pulled from the Paia Bay off the beach area of 93 Hana Highway at 11:19 a.m. Saturday, the Maui Police Department said. Ocean Safety Officers brought Carter to shore via jet ski, and first responders performed lifesaving measures on the beach before the victim was transferred to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he later died

One of the best places to see the sea turtles. Close to mama's fish house, if you plan far enough in advance you can possibly add this to your events for the day. Either way, great location for turtle viewing.

Beach
Mokuleia Bay, also known as Slaughterhouse Beach due to its historical connection with a nearby slaughterhouse, is a hidden gem in Maui. Designated as part of the Honolua-Mokuleia Bay Marine Life Conservation District, it offers excellent snorkeling opportunities and boasts a serene atmosphere with minimal development around the area.
Like all beaches on Maui, the time of year you visit affects the wind, surf and water clarity. This is a 5-star beach for all three in the summer.

Hidden gem. Not crowded and water was crystal clear. We got a visit from a monk seal too 🦭 first time I’ve seen roosters at the beach.

Nestled along the stunning coastline near Kapalua Bay Villas, Oneloa Beach, also known as Ironwoods Beach, offers a serene escape from the busier shores of Maui. This hidden gem is framed by luxurious mansions and lush ironwood trees, creating a picturesque setting for leisurely strolls. The Kapalua Coastal Trail leads you to this tranquil spot where you can enjoy breathtaking views while walking along the wooden boardwalk that hugs the shoreline.
One of the most magnificent coastline trails I’ve been. Such a hidden gem and it’s kid friendly too. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, it’s rocky. So grateful that we found this place.

Loved this beach. Beautiful water color, beautiful rocks, great for pictures and had turtles crawl up to us and take a nap! We found if you go all the way to the right end (facing the water) its a little more protected from the wind. We started out in the middle and were covered in sand with in a couple of minutes but didn't have this problem tucked in on the right end.

Pretty beach we found on the Kapalua Coastal walk. We hung out here for a bit and had the beach to ourselves. We saw one huge turtle while we were there and it seemed like a good spot to see more.

Beautiful beach along the hiking trail. Surf breaks out quite a bit making for food surfing / boogie boarding away from the beach with a family friendly break right on the beach. Not super easy to get too.
Matt K — Google review
Great beach, less crowds because of minimal parking. Get there early, only 20 spots. Water has a few rocks inshore but great waves to boogie board or body surf. It's not good for snorkeling. Sometimes, you can catch a turtle riding the waves or bird watch towards the cliff. Some shade with bushes. One access only with steep stairs that are not easy for those who need easy accessibility.

One of my favorite beaches.
