The Dog & Gun is a beloved traditional venue in Keswick, known for its dog-friendly atmosphere and fantastic menu. The pub offers a mix of contemporary and classic dishes, along with a selection of cask ales. The cozy setting features timber beams and a welcoming fireplace, creating an inviting ambiance for locals and holidaymakers alike. Visitors can savor the famous Hungarian goulash, as well as other popular dishes like beef & ale pie, fish and chips, and chicken with woodland mushroom pie.
If you ever find yourself in Keswick and you are looking for a fantastic place for food and drink? Then the Dog and Gun is the place to visit. They have a vast selection of real ales and lagers, they are also renowned for their famous goulash. Which I can confirm is the tastiest thing I’ve eaten in a long time 😋 the staff are friendly and dogs are welcome. Ru served us whilst we were here and she made us feel very welcome and relaxed. We shall definitely be returning to the Dog and Gun when we visit Keswick again. 😊

Been to Keswick many times never thought to come to this pub till Wednesday night. Very warm welcome from waitress, she was so lovely finding us a seat and recommending the Goulash. Demonstrating size of dishes. Really lovely lady. Goulash was fabulous. Pub so friendly and cosy. Great place will never avoid again!!!!
Christine H — Google review
Lovely place with a healthy range of vegetarian options. Very atmospheric and delicious food. The veggie goulash was very good.
Jo A — Google review
Nice pub, family and dog friendly. Big portions, a big goulash which I couldn’t finish and a cider cost me 20£. Goulash was tasty, rich flavor, but very filling.
Eliza A — Google review
Wow what a find, there are obviously several pubs in the town, but this caught our eye. Great welcome as soon as we walked in with the dogs. Service at the bar was quick and friendly. Food was tasty and came in good time and Ru was great we had a good chat and she loved the dogs..
Paul G — Google review
Not much to fault here! The prices were extremely reasonable and wait times for food were pretty short. The food itself was also delicious! (Not many peas in my mushy peas) but for the price of this it was brilliant! The only thing you must beware of is just how busy it gets! Particularly around 5.30-6 you can be waiting a long time to get a table and end up quite cramped in even when you find one.
Ben G — Google review
Lovely pub in the centre of Keswick, with traditional style beams and warm welcoming atmosphere. Within minutes of our arrival at 12 noon, the pub filled up, always a good sign. Staff were cheerful, friendly and helpful. Both the bar and food service were efficient. Food was very good, nicely presented and tasted lovely. Good selection of dishes are available from the menu. This pub has a greet selection of local real ales and beers. Dogs are very welcome in this pub, water bowls and treats are available for them. The interior was very cosy and looked nice having just been decorated for the festive season. Everything was immaculate and tidy.
Paul W — Google review
Came here this evening for their signature goulash and wasn’t disappointed . Got the standard size portion and very tasty snd filling. Washed down with a couple of beers. Large selection of craft and tap beers. Dog friendly and excellent service. Well worth a visit whilst in keswick. Total cost for meal and beers was reasonable.

Pub
The Wateredge Inn in Ambleside offers charming rooms, some with private entrances, within a relaxed lakeside pub featuring a vibrant restaurant. The inn is known for its dog-friendly environment, welcoming furry friends in designated indoor and outdoor areas with stunning views of Lake Windermere. Situated on over an acre of private grounds with a jetty overlooking the lake, it provides direct access to the shore for picturesque walks.
We stayed here for a night, on our first trip to the Lake District. The room was very unique, a much more interesting experience than your standard corporate hotel. I found the balcony and bathtub to be stand out features. We were in the building across the street, so not lake front. But you were able to park right outside your room making luggage easy to deal with. Food at the restaurant was good, and the bar was a nice place to spend time. You are a little bit outside of the town center, so it’s more quiet. It takes about 15 minutes to walk along the lake road to the town. The only real complaint we had was that the couch pull out bed was pretty uncomfortable for adults. So unless you are just putting kids in it, you might be better off just bringing an air mattress I would gladly stay here again.
Michael W — Google review
Lovely stay! Great location to explore Ambleside and surrounding area. Easy to get to, parking sorted at checking, plus you get free parking on the day you check out too! Room clean and comfortable. Ample and cozy decoration. Breakfast was brilliant, really good spread and relaxed setup with delicious cooked breakfast. The pub was a big plus!!! Lovely fish and chips and super fast service! Food arrived perfectly cooked and hot! Of course really good fish and chips, light batter and well cooked. Great stay, highly recommend!
Ligia S — Google review
We stayed here just for a night and have a very comfortable stay. They bed was just the right firmness, not too soft, not too hard, so we both managed to get a good nights rest. There are some amenities in the room such as tea and coffee making, although the room could really do with a mini fridge. We brought out plug in cool box to allow us to have cold drinks. The bathroom was small, although the shower pressure was good, and it was nice to see good quality soap and shampoo / shower gel. The breakfast was average. It's a buffet style and the quality of the food wasn't great, e.g. the hash browns were soggy and oily, the eggs were overdone, and whilst I like buttered mushrooms, these were on another scale of butteredness! We also found the staff weren't too attentive with us to begin with. The hotel is ideally located though, right next to the lake. It's really lovely to sit at, especially in the evening having a beer or two. Overall we had a lovely time, and would go back.
Ellie G — Google review
Stayed here for a couple of nights. The room was very comfortable, bathroom maybe a little small, very large, comfortable bed though. Breakfast was fine, help yourself buffet style. Lots of dog walkers here, so you have to not mind them. The hotel is ideally situated right next to the lake and there is also free parking for residents. We enjoyed our stay, and would recommend.
Dave P — Google review
Just stayed here with a group of friends and had a lovely time. Really good location on the lake, plenty of guest parking. Rooms were fine with nice touches. Full breakfast included in your stay. We ate in one night too and the food was lovely. Would highly recommend to all.
Sam W — Google review
I just spent two nights here and it was fantastic! The room was spot on – massive bed, spotless, and those toiletries smelled amazing. The food / breakfast was delicious. The staff were lovely, making check-in a breeze and checking in on me during meals. I left feeling truly pampered and can't wait to come back! Amazing location with stunning views of Windermere
Kathryn O — Google review
The Wateredge Inn is the perfect location for a pint on a sunny afternoon. Nice decor, amazing views. However the staff seem to swan about aimlessly and they desperately need more staff on the bar as it can easily take 20+ minutes waiting for a pint. There is plenty of seating and if it is full good luck. It’s a victim of its own success.
James L — Google review
I stayed for a couple of nights and had a brilliant experience. The room was super relaxing, and I loved the friendly staff who really made me feel welcome. Both breakfasts and dinners were fantastic - quick service and great choices! Overall, it was a perfect getaway, and I can't recommend it enough!

The Flying Pig Pub in Bowness offers a cozy and traditional Lake District experience just a short distance from Lake Windermere. The pub provides a relaxed atmosphere, friendly service, and a menu featuring freshly made dishes like fish & chips, Sunday roasts, pies of the day, and plant-based burgers. The pub's countryside decor adds to its charm. Situated near popular walking routes, the dog-friendly pub is an ideal spot for ramblers with their furry friends.
Seasonal early meal offers yesterday it was 4pm until 6.30pm 2 course for £16.95 not sure of the cost but you can also have 3 courses.. Good value for money. We got there after 4.30pm by the time we finished our meal the place was full. Recommend going early rather than later. We had pie of the day shown on specials board as chicken, ham & leek.. Was packed full of delicious chunky meat n leek.. Would recommend! Also the chips crispy outside soft in the middle, mushy peas and a jug of gravy.. One of the nicest meals out we have had in a while.. and we are fussy. We opted for dessert I had apple n rhubarb crumble with ginger ice cream ( ice cream was a bit of a small portion) but I wasn't complaining as it was plenty and also delicious. Hubby had sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. He ate the lot. We wouldnt hesitate in returning. Lovely friendly staff very attentive even when under pressure. Service charge added onto your bill.

I recently visited The Flying Pig restaurant in Windermere and tried their pork knuckle menu. The dish was hearty, flavorful, and perfectly cooked—the meat was tender and juicy, with a crisp exterior that gave it just the right texture. The portion size was generous, making it a satisfying choice for anyone with an appetite. The service matched the quality of the food. Staff were attentive, friendly, and made sure everything was served promptly. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, which added to the overall positive dining experience. Overall, The Flying Pig restaurant is a place I would happily recommend, especially for anyone who enjoys classic, well-prepared pork dishes served with a smile.

Decent food portions. Not particularly special. Notable is the pork trotter which is sizeable and fairly good. Service is average, unintrusive but perfunctory. Environment is warm and kid and dog friendly.
Akinobu R — Google review
We ate here twice during our week in Bowness, and popped in for a drink every day. The pub is absolutely exceptional! Food is great, service is excellent and the atmosphere is so friendly. We took our dog with us everytime and we were made to feel so welcome. They have a special dog menu and station for biscuits, water and bowls which is some of the best facilities we’ve ever seen. We can’t wait to come back on our next break!

Fantastic food after a day walking in the hills. Good beer, but the stand out really is the food - tasty and good portion sizes. They're also really good at catering for gluten free
Arthur E — Google review
This pubs website states that the british food is usually described as bland and not good to compared to other countries (which they then said they changed that). however they made perfectly true in the food we were served! took about 5 mins to speak to someone about getting a table and the staff themselves were nice however the food was terrible. we had a roast dinner each (trio meats) and cauliflower cheese and pigs in blankets, food took about 20mins to come out which wasn’t terrible timing i suppose, however i would’ve waited longer if that meant i got something hot! the gravy was like water and had no taste and cold, the meats themselves were bland and cold. potatoes were fluffy however not crispy and had no flavour except soil, unsure if you see the theme but they were cold. the veg was good, once again cold. cauli cheese was hot!! and flavourless… yorkshire tasted store bought and not fresh (cold!!!). pigs in blankets were good but not sure how you could mess that up, they were warm! took about 30mins to get a servers attention, i’m not one to complain but it was a disgrace. so i complained lightly to the server ( who was new and was not trained enough to be serving alone, i’ve worked in pubs i know how this should work.) and he was somewhat apologetic, then the manager came over shortly and he was nice about everything and gave us a 10% discount (i did not ask for any discount this was at his own doing) and offered us free deserts for when we next come, which we won’t be.. atmosphere was nice however nice fire and building, cleanliness was good. however does not make up for the disgrace of a roast and service! we left not happy and still hungry. should’ve got ice cream for desert and the running theme was cold through our visit.
Jack S — Google review
I’ve eaten here a fair few times now. The food here is always nice with good portion sizes. This time I had the new pork knuckle which was huge. Had this dish in Prague recently and this was just as tasty. Traditional pub with nice selection of real ales. Recommended.
Jonathan L — Google review
Absolutely shocking. Ordered the half chicken and the skin on the chicken was burnt. The meat beneath it was dry and over cooked. Didn’t even offer a discount or for it to be taken off the bill. I tried to eat it all but just wasn’t edible! I don’t complain much at ever. Their response was they had a new cook helping the chef. Well that’s not my problem! You can’t serve food like this!!! If they had offered a discount or taken it off the bill I would not be writing this review. They didn’t even try rectifying the situation.

The Drunken Duck Inn & Restaurant is a contemporary-country inn located in the heart of bustling Ambleside. The pub has hearty food, good ale, great views, and a friendly atmosphere. It focuses on strong customer relationships and high-end dishes – making it one of the best places to eat in the Lake District. It's ideally situated close to popular attractions like Coniston Water and Hawkshead, as well as one of the best locations in the Lake District.
We stopped here for a coffee break and absolutely loved the experience. The location offers a wonderful countryside vibe with a very peaceful setting. The cappuccinos were delicious, and we were able to enjoy them while looking out at sheep grazing in a nearby meadow. It was a perfect, relaxing backdrop. As a bonus, they were very welcoming to our dog and even provided a water bowl for her.
Mitch H — Google review
The food was exceptional and the pub setting is gorgeous. When we visited last night however we found the dining room waiting staff to be a cold and not very engaging. I can't help but think the bar and kitchen staff's efforts were let down by the front of house staff.
Cat F — Google review
Rather disappointed on this one. We went out of our way to visit along the dark country roads but were met with something we probably shouldn't have bothered with. Price wise the food did not match how much the bill came to. Similarly with the atmosphere & the wine. We dined in the evening and we were surprised to find a somewhat stone cold & quiet dining room, ie. no background music whatsoever and low level lighting. This made for an odd feeling date night when sat so close to other patrons. There was no atmosphere at all which was sad for such a cosy looking place. Food wise the highlight was the scotch egg starter with pickled cucumber, a tasty snack but also nothing majorly exciting about it. I had the duck and my partner had the venison for our mains, presentation was lacking compared to images put forth on website. I asked for a recommendation of a fruity red wine to which the server simply replied that they didn't really have one. No suggestion or offer of anything else, it was left for the couple next to us to say that we might like a particular wine, unfortunately I did not enjoy it. My partner did enjoy the oat stout on offer. Desserts were a let down, no taste of the oat ice cream or whisky chocolate tart, just something you'd happen to find in any old establishment. Petit fours again were nothing special... a dry cookie on a piece of wood. No decaff coffee so had to settle again for a drink I didn't particularly want. In terms of service it was overall fine but I felt our waitress could have been a bit happier or sunnier. It felt like a disinterest to be serving us. £7 side of chips that arrived white and undercooked was the biggest surprise, along with a bill of £158 for something that was just not worth it. I fear the drunken duck is trading on its michelin guide mention with no real substance or joy. I've had better meals for half the price with a much more varied menu offering. Overall we wouldn't return and felt it was a disappointing evening.
C S — Google review
Great place to go for a drink on a sunny afternoon. The benches across from the pub have a spectacular view across the fields towards Ambleside, and you have the chance to meet acquaintance with a few goats. There’s a great local (possibly unique) selection on tap, and I ordered some chips too - not cheap but they were cooked perfectly. The bar area inside looks cosy and is separated from the restaurant.
Marques — Google review
Sharing dinner experience only as we visited the restaurant for a meal. The duck breast is superb and the hosts are super friendly. A worthy visit for visitor to the area though be aware of which road you are taking to this destination, use the “main” road to and from Ambleside as the alternative is a tight single lane (two ways) country road which is challenging for city dwellers like myself.
Alex — Google review
Stunning location with epic views down the valley towards Ambleside. Have stayed here twice now, back in 2014 and just recently and both times didn’t disappoint. Food is delicious and well presented. Some of the beers are brewed on site. Rooms are quaint with high end bathrooms. Couldn’t recommend this place highly enough.
Tom T — Google review
Popped in for a quick bite of lunch. On the bar menu there was soup and a choice of two sandwiches. Decided to try the penelle sandwich, as I'd never had penelle before. Penelle is a chickpea fritter. So I had a chick pea fritter, with some rocket, between two slices of bread and a portion of chips. Very bland, very carb heavy. I left feeling extremely bloated and rued my choice of sandwich! Lovely place, nice staff, great atmosphere and wonderful views. Didn't enjoy the lunch. IMHO, give the penelle sandwich a wide berth! 😁
Gavin W — Google review
A very cute little pub with stunning back drop in the heart of the lakes. We had the Sunday lunch which was nice but the venison wellington was a bit under cooked, a bit soggy and IMO doesn’t belong on a roast dinner. The staff are great and super friendly/dog friendly. They also have a nice beer/wine selection. Desserts looked very pretty but were unfortunately pretty average.

Pub
The Golden Rule is a beloved pub in Ambleside, known for its traditional atmosphere and excellent selection of ales. Situated on Smithy Brow, it offers a welcoming environment with wooden beams and classic decor. While it doesn't serve food, the pub makes up for it with a wide range of cask beers, draught lagers, ciders, wines, whiskies, gins, and other spirits. It's also dog-friendly and features a charming beer garden.
Fantastic traditional pub with fine selection of well kept ales, lagers & ciders. Bar snacks only which makes this venue perfect for a quiet drink after a day on the fells. Wish there were more places like this to escape to 😉
Peter M — Google review
A great traditional pub nestled in scenic Ambleside. The exterior is colourfully decorated with real flowers, and the interior is covered wall to wall with pieces of intrigue including all sorts of photos, drawings, and maps of the local area (some of which are inset into the tables). The building itself is hundreds of years old and retains a lot of the strange features old buildings often have. An open plan bar contrasts the small single table hideaway just a few metres away. Small steps leading to rooms with only a few tables, wrought iron furniture, and seats set into bay windows really show how untouched by modern standards this place is. A shelf of board games and a TV with some live sports provides entertainment on demand. I'm a huge fan of the Golden Rule and often find myself returning when visiting the Lakes. The toilet facilities are also clean with a disabled toilet available and baby changing only in the ladies. The beer is exclusively Robinson's, but a wide selection of it. Unfortunately you still can't escape the Cumbrian obsession with sparklers on the pumps here, so pints are usually a tad short (there has been no issue with topping pints up if requested). The beer has always been good quality and well kept when I've had it, although I have heard others disagree at times. The staff are very friendly and a touch banterous, greatly appreciated by the tourists and locals alike. Bar snacks are available including the slightly more substantial pork pies for weary hikers. A small outside seating area compliments the generous interior. Overall my number one choice for a pub in Ambleside. The beer is good and you can find yourself getting lost in the maze of small rooms and the history that goes along with it.
Arthur D — Google review
Great little pub. We only had a drink but now I know it’s here will definitely be back to try the food.
Steven N — Google review
Pretty sure they don't do much more than pork pies, crisps and nuts but we didn't try. Having said that the beer, service and atmosphere are excellent.
Howard Y — Google review
Fantastic drinking pub, great selection of ales, really well kept.
John W — Google review
Usually a place we visit in winter, the pub has a lovely outside space for thoss wishing to enjoy a pint. The space is clean and well managed, with ample seating and is dog friendly.
Caroline Y — Google review
It would be no easy task to persuade me that this is not the best pub in Ambleside. The selection of local real ales is both wide and worthy, and the establishment possesses all the aesthetic charms of an English pub that a travelling American might most ardently desire. The pork pie was one of the best I’ve tasted.
B A — Google review
Great, old school pub. If you like real ales, it's a must. Doesn't do food menu, but do offer scotch eggs or pork pie to go with your pint.

The Royal Oak Inn is a traditional pub that has been welcoming visitors for over 200 years. The current owners have maintained the inn since 1995, offering casual rooms with some featuring en suite bathrooms. The inn is known for its hearty homemade food, wide selection of beverages, and friendly service. It's a popular stop for hikers on the Dales Way walk and is pet-friendly with a cozy atmosphere, open fire, and outside seating.
Spotlessly clean room with lovely view over the town and surrounding hills. Very comfortable bed and nice to have Yorkshire tea! A really friendly and welcoming service from all staff. The breakfast was truly delicious and of a very high quality. In a perfect location. Incredible value for money and we will definitely be back!

We stopped for a beer and a bit garlic bread on a lovely sunny afternoon. The town was packed and although this is only a couple of minutes off the beaten track it was quiet enough to get a bench outside. Plenty of great beer to choose from and the landlord clearly knows what they're doing and all the ones we tried were crystal clear and delicious. Restaurant area looked nice too

Visited the Royal Oak on the 1st July for a day trip, so we thought we would try the Royal Oak Pub. I have to say it was absolutely lovely, the atmosphere, the young girl (Hannah) was absolutely amazing, if it wasn't for her we wouldn't have even experienced the quality of the venue. The food was brilliant, an hidden gem!! She is an absolute asset to the business. I am a business man and Hannah is someone I would love to have working for me. Having been shown the rooms by Hannah they really are lovely compared to the Angel and the Albert. I will definitely book a room here. Lovely. Thank you Hannah. X

Stumbled across this lovely pub after walking around Boness, found it on a side street away from the main roads and glad we did! We sat outside and had a lovely lunch. The service/grounds/bar is great and the food was just what we wanted! And bonus points for making our dog a sausage for his lunch (we asked when ordering ours). Will be back when visiting the lakes!! 👍🏼

We didn’t stay here but had a lovely Sunday lunch. I had steak and ale pie and my husband had a roast lamb and both were delicious! Really cosy vibe with an open fire, dog friendly and the staff are really nice. Would recommend for sure!
Frances F — Google review
Stayed for a couple of nights in Room 2. The bedroom was spacious, tastefully decorated and the bed was incredibly comfy. The bathroom is a little dated, but it is clean and a good size. There is customer parking at the pub. The spaces are a little small, but we were warned of that in advance and it wasn't a problem. Breakfast in the morning was delicious and just enough on the plate to set us up for the day. We also ate at the pub on our first evening and really enjoyed the home cooked meals, especially the meat and potato pie. Bowness can get quite noisy on a weekend. Being an old building, some of that noise can be heard in the room, but it didn't disturb us.

Lovely traditional English pub. Five different hand pulled cask conditioned ales. Standard pub menu but done very well. I had the gammon and it was amazing.

The Queens Head in Troutbeck is a 17th-century coaching inn that reopened after a refurbishment in April 2017. It's located just four miles from Ambleside and Windermere, nestled on the side of the fells overlooking the Troutbeck Valley. The pub offers robust food and local ales served at a bar made from a 4-poster bed. Customers have praised its Sunday roasts, with one person calling it the best lamb roast they've ever had.
We had a fabulous Sunday roast here. Beautiful location. Warm cosy interior. The staff were so friendly and so accommodating with dogs. The quality of the food was amazing. If we are ever back in the area we would definitely visit again

Wonderful stay for two nights. The staff are amazing. So friendly and welcoming. Food was delicious. Rooms have everything you need and there are little touches that make it feel special. Very welcoming to dogs. Would highly recommend.

One of the best pub in the Lakes From the moment we walked through the door to the moment we left our experience at Queens Head was exceptional! Greeted by such friendly staff who were so attentive to our every need. Our food came so quickly and the quality was out of this world. The atmosphere they have created at this pub is something really special, even without the spectacular mountain backdrop this pub would still stand out for all the right reasons. We will definitely be returning on a regalar basis that is for sure!

Excellent village pub. Extremely warm welcome. Very very dog friendly! And very good quality food. Would definitely recommend of you're in the area. The best pub of our 6 day visit to Ullswater

Stayed at Queens Head again we haven’t been since the fire and it was great to be back. Restoration is brilliant and the feeling of the place has definitely been retained. Food and service were as good as they could be and the dog friendly side is so well worked that it was effortless. The only possible downside was that our bedroom was a touch too warm for us but a good fan which was in the room certainly helped.

The most amazing couple of managers ever are running this lovely little place. It’s cosy, warm, nicely decorated. The food was great, very tasty and more than excellent portions. The atmosphere feels very warm and relaxing and was perfect for a nice dinner. The couple running this place are so friendly, happy to talk and recommend places in the Lake District. We had a lovely evening all thanks to these lovely people working ever so hard to please customers. Would definitely recommend! Parking on site, dog food and treats too!

We went for Sunday lunch here. And it’s a lovely spot with friendly staff, a lovely interior and great atmosphere. However what let it down was the food. Tough meat, frozen vegetables and gloopy shop bought gravy. Really not what you expect for £20 plus a plate. Sad to right this review, but it really was a disappointment🤔

Really lovely dog friendly pub. The staff were always friendly, chatty and welcoming. Lots of lovely touches like a dog bed, towel, treats and a toy in the room. Our room (Skiddaw) was beautifully decorated and really comfy. Food was fantastic both for dinner and breakfast. We were only sorry we were staying one night but we’ll definitely be back!

Lovely, comfortable pub with friendly, welcoming staff. The food is great too, with generous portion sizes. Had a pint of Collie Wobbles too - delicious and refreshing. Will definitely be coming back!

We were on holiday and decided to give the inn & food a try for our evening meal, we were not disappointed. Table for 7 booked sitting inside and the food was fresh and tasty. Highly recommended. Staff were great. Large carpark with disabled parking close to building, additional seating under cover also more seating under umbrellas. Also noticed dogs welcome.

Myself and my partner went to this place for a meal, not staying at the hotel, recently and we had a really good time. The atmosphere was lovely, the food was really good. Particularly the Sammy Special. Notably the waiter, I believe his name was Fraser had brilliant customer service skills, he checked our order was all correct and delivered it to us with a big smile on his face. It was lovely to see someone make us feel so welcome in a place which appeared to be a pub popular with locals (which I can see why!) And enjoying his job. Absolutely would recommend for anyone visiting!

Booked today 19/08/25 a table for 6 , came here in February & April for lunch as it was really good But Today came with family and it was Awful, 3 young staff just standing behind bar talking amongst themselves and no help with ordering our 6 meals told get our own food & drinks from bar & cutlery etc . We did this when food came it was over cooked chips, over cooked fish ( very greasy) homemade steak pie was so small piece of over baked pastry with 4 pieces of beef for just under £20 was dreadful. I had fish finger sandwich bread was stale. Outdoor not cut into it so left, & my daughter in law had tuna her sliced bread was also stale. There was no point in complaining as staff were not interested , no mature person seemed to be around to do so this is why I’m doing a review now. Please Take Note ! Advise going elsewhere to eat Please don’t waste your money ( Bill was £135.00) Our family are here for 7 days we certainly will be looking for somewhere to eat each day also somewhere that appreciates our custom.

A lovely pub, nice selection of beers from the brewery, great outdoor area with part protected with windows and roof if the weathers a little grey and an area with multiple tables and umbrellas. We didn't eat here but the food looked really good, home cooked food with one side dedicated just for eating but you can eat outside too. Great staff and very welcoming, definitely worth a visit if nearby.

Beautiful pub set in ings village. The staff were lovely and the food was incredible. We will definitely be back! Thank you full to the brim!

I came here in a busy season which was maybe a mistake. The food had an hour wait although we had been warned about this as there was a problem in the kitchen so that was ok (also it is not normally like this). Despite that, the beer and food was lovely. I had the pie which is quite expensive compared to others but still lovely. The staff were very friendly and offered us free crisps due to the long wait. Would recommend.

Stopped off for food as the other places we tried were full. I had a roast dinner costing nearly twenty pound. When it arrived the pork looked nice but no flavor, the yorkshire was sat in the gravy and the roast potatoes had bee re heated in a microwave. The veg had been shown the water but not cooked. Over priced and not nice.

My husband and I stopped for lunch with our dog after a walk. The service was quick and friendly. I had the fish & chips which was really lovely and crispy, and my husband enjoyed his curry. We would definitely come again when next in the area.

Just home from a lovely break in the Lake District. The Cuckoo Brow Inn was very welcoming and quaint. Shower had great pressure and was lovely and relaxing. We had a family room and space was ample. Good facilities tea, coffee and biscuits provided along with decaf also. Only slight down was radiator needs dusted. Breakfast was excellent, self serve continental and hot breakfast cooked to order with lots of variety. Loads of rabbits running about outside. Staff very welcoming and friendly

My wife and I recently stayed stayed at the Cuckoo Brow Inn, top class service. The staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for you, nothing was any trouble. We stayed in room 7 and the room itself was great. powerful hot shower and a comfortable sleep. If I had to pick anything I would have preferred to be at the front of the building so we had more of a view, but this doesn't take anything away from our stay it's more a preference of I had a choice. The food was beautiful from breakfast to our evening meal and service was prompt. Over all a very enjoyable stay and I'm sure we will be back. Thank you to all the staff at the Cuckoo Brow and your hard work.

This family owned inn is just lovely. They are very personable and really care about their guests. The view was amazing from our room. The food is to die for. Their menu changes due to the season and we were quite satisfied with our meals. We ate there for dinner every day. We did forget to book, but we were able to get a table within 30 minutes. They had the best sticky toffee pudding, so moist and fluffy. And the breakfast is just the best. If you get a chance, stay here or just eat. You won't be disappointed.

We went to the Cuckoo Brow for Sunday dinner to celebrate a wedding anniversary with our family recently (October 2025). Absolutely fabulous Sunday lunch!! This was a return visit for us, albeit and good 7 or 8 years apart. The service was excellent and friendly and helped alleviate any worries my daughter had who's vegetarian (I'm not taking ownership of that decision). I did try the nut roast and I have to say was very good, I had the lamb shank however, and it was sublime, as were the vegetables and the yorkshire pub was massive. Safe to say we all enjoyed our lunch and my only regret is not taking a photo for the review. Easy to get to from Bowness via the cross lake ferry dropping you at Ash Landing and a 30 minute pleasant walk.

Stopped in with my family for lunch on a rainy day. Service and decor were good but the food ranged from mediocre (wild boar sausages and mash) to terrible (prawn salad, which seemed to have been reheated). Also, the ale I had did not seem to come from a well-kept keg. Could also do with some dedicated cycle parking (racks).

We booked in for a work meal for 35+ people. Communication before the event was easy and the team were really responsive to our requests. We had to make a couple of last minute changes to our orders which were dealt with really well, nothing was too much trouble. The service on the evening itself was brilliant too. The food was delicious and portions were ample for hungry customers who had been out walking during the day. Highly recommended for a great night for a large group.

Really disappointed. This used to be a really good place to eat and it's clearly gone downhill. My wife ordered the Vegetable lasagna only to be served red sauce in a dish with no pasta sheet to be found. When we brought this up to the (actually very lovely) waitress she went and found the "manager" Raf, who came over to us immediately on the defensive. We explained that the "Lasagna" did not resemble a lasagne and that it didn't actually have any pasta sheets in it. He told us this is what lasagne is... And talked to us like we were idiots for questioning it. Ive lived long enough on this planet to know that lasagne is meant to be a dish LAYERED with sheets (plural) of pasta traditionally 2-5 layers and then filled with vegetables cheese etc. Serving us a pot of chopped tomatos and sticking a sliver of pasta sheet on top is not a lasagne and it's not worth £20. We were so put off by his attitude we didn't bother eating our food. We left, went and got chips and sat by the water. Much more pleasant.
David S — Google review
The food will not blow you away but it is good. The lasagna was very tomatoey. It was difficult to find a table and a vegetarian in our group was served a meat pie but the waitress was very apologetic. The atmosphere was good but a bit loud.

We’ve been here a few times for drinks but never eaten. The food was phenomenal, me & the wife loved our meals. I had the beef stew, so good it’d turn a vegan. Pint was a bit pricey but that’s the same pretty much anywhere now.

A very busy bar/pub/restaurant. Dog friendly. We tried on two occasions to get a seat for food but it was very busy so ate elsewhere but did stay for a drink. Higgley piggley but suited the place. Sofas, chairs, stools, cushions. We did see food being served which looked v nice. Would try here again next time in the area.

The café features guest wines from family-run vineyards, beer from local microbreweries, and coffee from Cumbrian roasters.
A lovely cafe in the centre of town. Exceptionally friendly staff who made sure we were looked after while we waited for our table. Food was equally good, particularly as it was prepared and cooked in the smallest kitchen I’ve ever seen. Would definitely eat there again.

Visited twice in two days. We had coffee and the most amazing lemon and raspberry blondies then went back for pizza the next night. The pizzas were some of the best we’ve ever eaten. Really recommend no 8 and 12 as well as the nachos.

A great little cafe that is full of surprises. Didn't expect to find great pizza or tasty nachos. We started with coffee and cake, food orders are taken from 12pm. After that we ordered lunch, service was polite, and the food was very good indeed. What was fascinating is that the kitchen is one oven by the bar, and the chef is able to do his magic well in this tiny space. It does get busy so go early. The name has an interesting history, so ask. As a strange combination of bar, coffee shop, pizzeria and tapas, it works really well.

This restaurant is (probably) the best restaurant in the entirety of Keswick. A warm and friendly dining atmosphere, great tasting food, and best of all, you don’t need a bank loan to be able to afford it. Very reasonably priced for the quality. We visited the bitter end on Tuesday 15th June and they were super busy. However the staff were so friendly and accommodating. They made room for us and were very helpful in accommodating my need for gluten free food. The food , both a starter and two mains, was exceptional and thoroughly enjoyed. If we lived more locally we would definitely come again!

We came back for a toast after an enjoying drinks here a few nights before. Will be reviewing it separately for those drink (though will have to be on a different platform). Respectfully, it was one of the worst roast dinners I’ve ever eaten. The vegetable portions were small, the beef was dry and the gravy lacked flavour. Other food looked to be of a better standard but would not be coming back for a roast and would not recommend.

Just came in for a drink, quite a big dining room but all full even on a wet Monday night in Cockermouth. Great choice of beers, friendly staff. Food looked generous and tasty, with a few ‘gastropub’ specials.
David C — Google review
The food was great. The service was less so-slow, plates left for ages on the table, originally weren't even shown where the reserved table was on entry to the pub despite asking although another member of staff rectified this. Nice atmosphere.
Victoria H — Google review
Great pub with a few benches outside and a lot of amazing decorated space inside, incredible food and lovely staff, thank you!!!!
Amber S — Google review
Stopped here for dinner this week, a great range of ales and a fairly knowledgable bar staff that were able to offer some insight into the beers I had not heard of. The food was excellent, well presented, hot and tasty and very good value for money. One work of warning, my wife had the sticky toffee pudding and you better leave room as the portion was huge. Great atmosphere and of course the usual pack of dogs. Now whilst I don;t mind dogs in the pub when I am eating, perhaps some of the owners need to keep their pets on a shorter lead, not all that fond of a strange dog licking my leg. Suppose nothing the owners can do to stop this and did not detract from a fantastic evening out, thanks you to all the staff that make it possible.

The Punch Bowl Inn is a charming spot with delicious food and very good service. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and they even provide coloring sheets for children, which is a nice detail. The children’s menus are homemade and carefully prepared, and everything we tried was excellent. The cheese soufflé was outstanding, and the cheesecake was just as delicious. It’s definitely worth the detour. Highly recommended!

Poor service, 3 starters out of 4 only delivered until others nearly finished. Black pudding out of a packet and bubble and squeek with no veg. Mains the size of appetizers, and a so called apple crumble that resembled baby food with crunchy stuff on top that was more almond based rather than flour and butter which I understand to make a crumble top. VERY VERY expensive for what you get. Went back to cottage for pringles as left hungry.

We enjoyed the most fantastic meal the evening after swimming the Great North Swim. Expensive but worth it for the exceptional quality and taste! Just one criticism, the barman was surly, bad tempered and unfriendly. Such a shame, but other than that everything was perfect, the ambiance wonderful, the setting & decor tasteful and the remainder of the staff courteous and attentive.

This used to be one of our favourites. Such a shame on our last visit the standards have dropped, but the prices have gone up! My cod was incredibly salty that I couldn't even taste the cod. The mini fishcake that came with it was flavourless, and the potato was just plain potato. My partners dish was quite bland and dry, very small portions now. Unfortunately the prices have kept going up but the quality has declined. This used to be our go to when visiting the lakes, but it seems it's not what it used to be which is a great shame. We won't be returning.

Good ambience, good food and good service! Love this place. We had the Hungarian Goulash which was lovely. Regular portion was huge (for an Asian...lol) with Dumpling and Garlic Bread. The Beef Ale & Pie had a crumbly pastry with tender meat cuts, and the sauce with it was very tasty. Reasonable prices and nice spot to sot outside to people watch.

Nice fellas in the bar but thats honestly where it ends, paid 20 quid for 2 beers and got about 10 chips and 4 bits of garlic bread(couple got eaten) as we were ravenous after a long day. service was also very slow for what we got took almost 15 minutes for the food to get to the table after we ordered and we had people blowing cigarette smoke straight across us. Honestly, just a really disappointing experience.

I can’t say enough good things about Tracey at the Royal Oak — she’s truly one of a kind. Every time I visit, she goes above and beyond to make sure everyone feels welcome, looked after, and completely at home. It’s not just great service — it’s genuine care, warmth, and a personal touch that you don’t often find these days. Tracey remembers faces, names, and even little details about people’s preferences, which makes every visit feel special. She somehow manages to keep everything running smoothly while still taking the time to chat, laugh, and brighten up everyone’s day. Her professionalism, kindness, and sense of humour create an atmosphere that keeps you coming back again and again. Whether it’s a busy weekend evening or a quiet weekday afternoon, Tracey handles it all effortlessly with a smile that never fades. The Royal Oak wouldn’t be the same without her — she’s the heart and soul of the place. If you’re ever at the Royal Oak, make sure you say hello to Tracey and show her her tie worth. She turns a simple visit to the pub into a truly memorable experience. People like her don’t come around often — she’s an absolute credit to the team and a true star! 🌟

This is a great old hotel with tons of character set in a superb location. Yes it needs a little updating but I hope if/when it does happen they keep the look it currently has. Booking and checkin was easy to do and all the staff were friendly and helpful. The Walkers Bar has a great selection of ales and again a great atmosphere to enjoy a well earned pint or three. The bedroom was small, very clean but one of the best nights sleep we had while walking the Cumbria Way, very quiet, pitch black and the beds were super comfy. Choice of food was basic but absolutely great ( the pies we had were Steak and Ale and Chicken, Ham and Leek). Breakfast was just as good with a varied choice. Will return again and highly recommend.

I thought I'd left my cagoule in the toilets after a day out walking in the fells and the staff couldn't have been more helpful looking for me (I wasn't even staying there). When it couldn't be found and I said I looked like getting wet with the weather forecast over the next few days, one of the staff said he'd have a look in lost property. He came back with a cagoule (albeit a man's and slightly too big, but beggars can't be choosers) that was probably a better quality than the one I thought I'd lost. As I went out he also suggested (nicely, as well, certainly not accusingly) that I just recheck my friend's car to see if it was in there. When I got back to our cottage I did just that and found it had fallen down between the seat and the door in the car so it was difficult to see. Thank you so much, to all the staff I spoke to both on the phone and in person (and I'm sorry, but I didn't catch anyone's name) you couldn't have been kinder.

We love to walk around here and park in this National Trust car park. After our walk we pop into the climbers bar for a quick drink and sometimes something to eat. This time, though, the barman wasn't particularly friendly. He didn't seem happy to be there hence not 5 stars for service. That said, in the years we've been coming here (25+ years) this is our first experience of only 4 star service. Perhaps it was a one-off. 🤞

A fantastic place to side outside and enjoy a drink after a day on the mountains. Decent menu…. Recommend the pie!

After a long walk had a great pint in here. So many people were ordering chips we joined in. Fabulous. You can keep you Claridges high teas, give me a bowl of chips any day. Memorable moment!

The White Lion Hotel, located in the heart of Ambleside, is a historic and iconic British pub with a rich past. The building exudes charm with its traditional features such as an open fire, wooden bar, and cozy seating. It's a perfect spot to relax with your furry friend by the fire during colder months or enjoy the sun-drenched beer garden in summer. Great traditional pub in the centre of Ambleside.. Served by the two lovely ladies behind the bar , food was fantastic from a varied food menu.. . ..Great service and polite. The pub inside and out is brilliant, additional seats outside to enjoy the weather.. Superb.

Victoria was more than accommodating when finding a table for us and our large dogs who needed a safe space to snooze, while we ate our dinner. The pub also has a nice, calm atmosphere.Thank you for a lovely evening, the food was delious. Would definitely recommend a visit here if you are in the area.

Went here for a dinner randomly and we had a really good time. Can get busy ,booking a table is recommended ,although we didnt book, but had no problem of finding a table even at quite busy evening. We waited around an hour for our food, which was explained at the order .It was busy so understandable and we happily waited while sipping our drinks. Food can be pricey, but was really delicious. We just had burgers and not sure i would pay this much for a burger again ,but with saying that beef was fresh , very tasty and definitely higher grade produce .No regrets ! Drinks are reasonably priced and we had a good few. Atmosphere was nice despite busy place.Staff was all polite and friendly, especialy our young Asian server who was managing most of the tables alone.Very kind and profesional ,would go beyond to make you satisfied !!! Location is great with good beer garden. Next time we will come over for a breakfast ;) Thank You ☆☆☆☆☆

Stopped at The White Lion Hotel in Ambleside for lunch whilst visiting the town. Specifically wanted somewhere with outside seating due to us having our dog with us. Ordered drinks at the bar and then my partner ordered food from the menu available. My partner opted for the fish goujons sandwich and I opted for the ham and cheese melt sandwich. The first issue was when the waiter approached our table approximately 15 minutes after ordering to advise that they had run out of tartar sauce for the fish and would mayonnaise suffice. We were happy with that. After a further 10 minutes, he appeared again to say that they only had one piece of focaccia bread left and would plain white bread be okay for the ham and cheese melt sandwich. We agreed to this because we were keen to get the food. The order finally arrived after a further 10 minutes and what was put down was poor to say the least. Photos below of the food. The fish was not goujons, they were standard fish fingers. The ham and cheese melt was poor. The cheese was clearly some form of processed cheese slice which had been melted. The bread wasn’t buttered in either sandwich and the overall presentation was poor. Either the chef was off sick or they were having a bad day! Not the standard of pub food you would expect to find in a hotel based in a popular tourist location. We will certainly not be eating here again, considering the large number of other eating places with outdoor seating in Ambleside.
Stuart S — Google review
I came in for a meal with my partner and service was generally awful and his burger was burnt, they also took our starter before we had finished eating. For the prices you’re paying the food is quite bad. We asked for our food to come all together and it didn’t, I asked for the vegan options but was given dairy in my starter so when the main arrived I wanted to check with the sever, which I assume manager (as he was in a blue Hawaiian shirt) that the lasagna I ordered had vegan cheese. He then proceeded to be very patronising back to me stating that I ordered something vegan so it would be vegan and then left to go to the kitchen but shouted loud enough for us both to hear him (as we were sat directly opposite the kitchen) complaining about our table and acting as if we were stupid. This made me feel angry as my partner and I both work in a touristy pub ourselves and this kind of service and behaviour especially from a manager is unacceptable. It makes me angry as I know how difficult customers can be we both always make the effort to be friendly and polite to the staff, but we were treated unreasonably. I wanted to complain but the servers continued to dodge our table even with dirty plates on it, but that seemed to be a general theme of the pub, as there were dirty plates everywhere and it wasn’t busy. I also saw another member of staff drop half the plate of chips he was carrying to a table and proceed to do nothing about it. The whole experience put me off of my meal, though it didn’t seem that appetising anyway. The vibe overall seemed unwelcoming and unpleasant, I got the general impression that nobody really cared. It’s safe to say I wouldn’t be visiting again, and it seems there are plenty of other nicer places to eat out in Ambleside.

Phenomenal, most pubs and hotels can only dream of presenting a traveler with such comfort and taste when it comes to evening dining. After being turned away from several other eateries, our final resting place for the eve was The White Lion Hotel, where both myself and my colleagues who had been hiking for charity found ourselves stunned by its inner beauty. Throughout our visit the most lovely server/floor staff Isla helped us through the order taking process and provided opinions and suggestions as to what we should have for dinner, her choice was superb, Isla brought a warmth to our hearts with her sweet, smiley and frankly sensational service. I would not have wanted to be served by anyone else, in the world. We ordered three of their favorite dishes being the maple double bacon burger with some wow factor garlic and striking salt and pepper chicken. A fiery meal with oodles of flavor, better than mum cooked as a kid, If you’re not dining at the white lion hotel, are you dining at all? Must go, don’t skip, you’re missing out otherwise.

The Ship, Coniston is a charming pub that welcomes dogs and offers a great selection of food and drinks. Situated near Coniston Old Man and Tarn Hows, it's an ideal stop for hikers exploring the area. The recently refurbished interior provides a comfortable setting to enjoy a meal by the open fire. The menu offers a variety of reasonably priced dishes, including fish & chips, burgers, and delicious starters like garlic mushrooms.
We had a lovely meal and a pint of beer: fish and chips, and cod with chorizo gastro meal. Both were delicious and served with a friendly smile.

The Ship it is a charming place, with nice staff and rustic environment, whrn we arrived there was a group of local musicians playing particular music that for us was really attractive as a tourists. we did not order food so I can't say something about that, but the beers and the time spended there it was really nice. 👌🏻

Absolutely phenomenal experience at this pub yet again. I had previously visited this restaurant in February of this year and I had the best steak pie of my life. As we were back in the lakes, I decided to return. The food was incredible once again with fantastic service and a lovely atmosphere. The whole experience from start to finish was perfect. Every time I visit the lakes, I will ensure I pay a visit to this pub. One of the best dining experiences I’ve had recently.

Nestled in the picturesque Wasdale Valley, the Bridge Inn at Santon Bridge is a charming family-run country inn that offers a delightful escape for travelers. With its cozy restaurant and inviting wood-beamed bar, guests can indulge in hearty home-cooked meals and enjoy a full English breakfast to kickstart their day. The inn boasts sixteen en-suite rooms, including one romantic four-poster option, making it perfect for both weary fell walkers and business travelers seeking comfort after a long day.
We stayed here in winter 2019 and what a beautiful stay it was. I cannot recommend this place enough. If you’re looking for a quiet spot to spend your vacations in and around Lake District this is the perfect place. Obviously keep it mind you’re going there for sightseeing so don’t expect luxury level room service or condition of the inn. The inn is beautiful no doubt the rooms and clean and tidy and food exceptional since you’re in the middle of no where. If I would get a chance I will come back here in the summer. Our room opened up to the river and what a beautiful sight it was. We kept the window open all night because the sound of the stream was soooo soothing. Fresh air beautiful scenery. What more could you ask for? And the staff was so very gracious. Made our stay so joyful! Each of the staff was courteous and made sure we were comfortable. 💯 recommended place to stay in lake district

Stopped for lunch. Service was friendly and polite. Good is at better end of pub cuisine - all dishes were good but highlight among our party was the generously portioned fish and chips. The excellent range of beers made me annoyed I was driving!

Had multiple stays here over the years. Is our go-to relaxing countryside stop-off while travelling to Scotland from the South. Great breakfast, friendly staff. We did have an issue with our shower hose leaking (rm 16) on the most recent visit that the staff were unable to resolve during our stay. Recommended.

Fantastic service and great food! Great food portion and yet we got so tempted by sticky toffee pudding, we did a take away of dessert. It sure was best sticky toffee pudding I had in some time! What more fatanstic about this place is the staff, very helpful - from simplest thing of suggesting tables that would suit us to suggesting food options, double checking with us our options, we felt great being taken care of!

Absolutely fantastic little place. We visited here whilst camping in Eskdale, the food was delicious. Empty plates all round and at a great price, too. But what really made it for us was the lovely gentleman behind the bar. He was such a lovely man ( I didn't get his name). He was great with our little boy, as anyone with a young child will know taking them out for food is sometimes a little challenging (a whole lot of energy to burn 24/7 🫣🤣) the bloke didn't once make us feel like our son was being a nuisance. Will most definitely visit again when we're next in the area. Thank you so much.

Stayed the night and had a meal here and was very happy. Room was comfortable. Great power shower. And food was tasty and filling. No faults.

DO NOT GO TO THIS “PUB” Incredibly rude customer service from bar staff who couldn’t care less about being kind. condescendingly told us our food would come separately despite us ordering a mere 30 seconds between each other as we wanted to pay separately, was incredibly rude when we expressed our obvious confusion. The staff then came to your table and said it would come all together. One burger then came out less than 5 minutes from ordering but was wrong and needed to be send back, causing our party to have to eat separately. not to mention the food was subpar at best, with cheap buns on the burger and bisto gravy for the pies. NOT TO MENTION EACH FOOD ITEM WAS FAR TOO EXPENSIVE (15.95 for what looked like a rustlers burger and 18.95 for a slither of pie and bisto gravy w boiled veg and chips) DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY

Nestled in the heart of Keswick, The Royal Oak is a charming pub that perfectly captures the vibrant spirit of the Lake District. Whether you've just explored the ancient Castlerigg stone circle or enjoyed a scenic walk to Walla Crag, this cozy bar offers comfort for both you and your furry companions with dog bowls readily available.
It was a rainy summer's day and we opted for a lunch at The Royal Oak. We got there at around noon and the place was not busy. We were a party of 7 adults and a 20 month old. The pub set our table including a high chair as requested. We loved the decor and we felt right at home. Being rainy, we ordered several pots of tea, and they were arriving at the table one by one. We thought it was funny. We placed our meal order. The food was delicious, everyone enjoyed their food. By the this time, more guests have arrived to the pub. Service was still fine although it took a while to bring our dessert. Most of us ordered sticky pudding, and let me tell you, it was divine. I did get an oddly shaped corner of the pudding, but it still tasted amazing. The pub has its own parking, and it was very much appreciated especially on a rainy day. Looking forward to return once again when in the Lakes!

We stopped on our way home from Windermere and it was a lovely surprise. The beef bourguignon was simply stunning, a perfect interpretation of a classic. Very welcoming staff and prices in range for the location.

The best fish and chips - and coming from a seaside town, I've had lots to compare. The fish was beautiful, the crisp batter was just that, crispy ALL over. The chips (fries) were hot and stayed hot. The home made accompaniments - curry sauce, tartare sauce and the minty mushy peas - outstanding. We also had a roast beef ciabatta also with fries, and that was great too. The table service was attentive but not over bearing. Our dog was allowed in one of the eating areas, there is space to also be away from dogs if you prefer. Loos are up some steps. There is a good sized car park, a smaller outside area. It's a gorgeous old pub building, strangely without much atmosphere - but don't let that put you off.

Called in here on a sunny evening on the way back from a hike up Newton Fell. We sat outside in the beer garden and within 10 minutes of ordering our food arrived. My two friends and I had dinner here on Sunday evening. It was great!! On line booking was really easy and Anthony was very responsive. The service was very friendly. Anthony and Matt have a great sense of humour and made sure we were looked after. The food was delicious and a very high standard. Ate twice at this traditional pub, well worth the 20 min walk from Far Sawery, during our 4 day stay in the area. Beer was fantastic, so was the food, topped off with a dollop of banter from the friendly staff. Couldn’t recommend it enough !

Booked a near-last minute stay here and it was great. Friendly and helpful staff reserved us a table for dinner even though we weren't sure of our plans. Very glad we ate there though as the food was excellent- freshly made and a decent size. Can thoroughly recommend this place to stay
Neville V — Google review
Positive points, friendly welcome, nice atmosphere, cozy room, lovely breakfast. NEGATIVE points, shower rail very loose, Black mould in silicon around shower, xpelair covered in old dust, hot water comes out of cold tap. Coffee/sugar damp, was chucked. It is a pub, so don't expect early nights as very loud in room, tractors coming past window very early a.m, so awake very early. Floor in pub dirty, same food on floor second evening. We requested a packed meal for our last day as long journey meant leaving before breakfast. All was agreed and a packed meal would be brought to our room on the last evening. At dinner we requested again, bar manager rang breakfast cook as he knew nothing about it. We were told that now breakfast would be a few things left out for us. The last morning, nothing was left!! We messaged owners who offered us a £20 voucher towards our next stay. We declined as we would not stay again. As we had very little sleep the first night and were due a very long journey home, my husband slept at his brothers house on the settee, 10 miles away to get a good sleep. I stayed at the hotel.

This pub is perfectly situated between the car park and the entrance to Beatrix Potter's Hill Top. We arrived early for our scheduled visit and decided to pop in for a pint, which was a fantastic idea. The pub is very pet-friendly, and our pup was delighted to receive some treats from the friendly staff at the bar. My absolute favorite part was the huge spider! We ordered 3 lunch sets including Chicken & Bacon Roll but that was overcooked, so hard and dry to eat. Rosemary fries really have no rosemary at all. The staff was rude when I ordered an Iced Latte and was rejected. When I tried to reconfirm saying that it was on the menu. That lady (probably named Madalina) told me they did not do iced latte. It doesn’t matter at all to me but the sound was 😒 My son added some items after I placed my order. She just reminded me that “I already asked if you finished.” Yes, I have no idea that my son wanted to add some items and it felt like I made a BIG mistake and should plead guilty about that.

A large pub with lots of seating, both inside and out. Fairly pricey food for the small portions which seemed suitable for children not grown adults. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We stopped at a lovely pub in Grasmere and it turned out to be the perfect choice on a sunny summer’s day. The garden is absolutely beautiful – a gorgeous spot to sit back, relax and soak up the views. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, and the service was impressively quick without ever feeling rushed. The food was delicious too – hearty, freshly cooked, and just what we needed after a morning of exploring. All in all, it was a fantastic experience and I’d happily return again. A disappointing visit. We ordered a flatbread, focaccia board and fish and chips and were very disappointed with the service. The woman with long dark hair (which was not tied up, which should’ve been our first red flag) may as well have threw our food on the table. She did not ask us if we wanted any sauces or anything and walked off, tossing her hair as she went. We did want sauce, but she came nowhere near us while we were eating for us to ask her. This meant I had to have my fish and chips dry. We were also not asked how our meals were. Had we have been, we would’ve been able to voice that we had found a loose, short grey hair in the focaccia board. It is simply not good enough when paying £21 per meal, I would not recommend to anyone wishing to feel welcomed or looked after. Also disappointing was the fact that they had no straws. I will add that the lad behind the bar was absolutely lovely.

My partner, dog and I have just returned from the most perfect stay at Tweedies. The location is perfect, the breakfast was tasty and the hotel is very cosy and very quiet at night. Always loved this bar, been coming for over 10 years. slightly disappointed with most recent visit. food very average for the price being charged and the price for ales has shot up. Had a stout... £6.40....for an ale. An ale. A bit of a joke. Don't think ill be coming as often because of this which is a shame.

Nestled in the charming village of Allithwaite, The Pheasant Inn is a delightful family-run establishment that has been serving up comfort food since 2005. This traditional free house prides itself on offering locally sourced dishes, including a rotating selection of vegan options that are highly praised by locals and visitors alike. With its beautifully landscaped garden featuring topiary and a serene stream, it’s an ideal spot to unwind with a drink or enjoy al fresco dining.
My wife and I went to The Pheasant Inn for an evening meal whilst staying in the village. The food was excellent as was the service. It was great to see a country pub with character and great staff with a sense of humour. We then stayed for drinks after our meal in the bar to soak up the atmosphere. Absolutely brilliant evening. I would say if you plan on going to book a table as it gets very busy

Review 14/06/2025 Atmosphere: Busy in all areas, great to see. Staff : All pleasant and efficient taking orders. Drinks arrived quickly. Food : Fish and triple cooked chips. Black garlic Brisket beef burger. Fish and chips: Smaller portion size was just right.Fish was good, chips could have been crispier and hotter,so let down the dish overall. Burger: The burger was dry (overcooked) which was a shame as the meat is obviously quality. Again skin on Fry's could have been hotter. Overall comment: The decor and ambience of the Pheasant was nice, but the food was just good and let it down. Not bad enough to complain about but a quality burger at £17.50 should have been better. Both chips served were not served hot, just warm, maybe have been under a heat lamp as the triple cooked were not crispy enough. Just didn't feel like it was just cooked and sent from the kitchen. Cost with drinks £45

Had an evening meal here prior to the Cartmel Trail race the next day. Staff were very friendly, they took us through the specials on the board and we both plumped for the homemade chicken, leek and bacon pie with colcannon mash and veg. We were offered (and accepted!) a little jug of the pie gravy halfway through the meal. The whole thing was absolutely delicious!! My friend opted for the ginger sticky toffee pudding which she said was lovely, I was unable (alas) to fit a pudding in!

This is personal. Location may seems off for most but I love the quietness. Country side feeling and superb farm field view. Service was super excellent and friendly. This is not a typical 24 hours man hotel or guest house. There is no check in counter - and at first found a little odd that I had to register all the guests and its details one day before arrival. After arrival - then I knew. Regardless- love everything about it. Love all the people. Thank you so much for your kindness. It feels like part of big family

Visited here after doing the Humphrey Head walk. The staff (Mel, Lyn, Paul and Scott) were so kind and welcoming. Helping us with our 6 month old and couldn’t do enough for us. The food was out of this world. Great service thank you very much.

We went for an evening meal. The food was of a high standard. We were seated in the dining area and waited for half an hour before getting up and going to the desk for someone to come and take our order. I had caught the waitress's eye at 15 minutes who said she'd be with us shortly but it didn't happen. Once we ordered our food the service was all right but we didn't stay for dessert.

We were staying locally and had heard great things about this Inn. We have a dog so were pleased we would be able to dine here with her. Booked a table through their website and arrived to a friendly welcome. The staff made a fuss over our little Yorkie which was so lovely! We ordered 3 Full English Breakfasts and they came after 10 or so minutes. Absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. If we're ever on holiday again in the area we'd definitely return! Thankyou!

We had a good dinner here on our last night in the lakes. Very generous portions and lovely staff. There’s a good amount of parking spaces. The pub is half older and more original, and the other half is renovated and more modern.

The Crafty Baa in Windermere is a cozy and welcoming spot located at the heart of Cumbria's tourist hub. This family-run pub offers a friendly atmosphere, with a quirky and interesting decor made from 80% upcycled and recycled materials. The bar attracts many visitors due to its warm ambiance, efficient staff, and reasonable prices compared to other areas.
This is a characterful bar with very unusual decor. The staff are friendly but need to been approached to be fully appreciated. On arrival, the generally confused first impression soon gives way an appreciation of what the bar really has to offer. The pub IPA at 6% is worth a try but the fridges should be investigated. Overall this is a pub worth seeking out. I've been to a few and can highly recommend this one!

We absolutely loved the place. My partner highly recommended this during or visit to Windermere. We loved the deco. A one off .Thought the staff were friendly and attentive. Great service. We thoroughly enjoyed the food that we ordered ( Fish fingers sandwich). We would highly recommended to anyone visiting this area. We loved the cheeky naughty menu.

Fun place to try different craft beers. Great selection! We returned on a second trip to the LD, we liked it so much. We went on Sunday night and the bartender (didn’t get his name) with the glasses was friendly and helpful. Let us taste a couple and gave some recommendations to help us choose. Quirky spot to have a pint in Windermere

The Crafty Baa was a really unique pub we visited on our trip to the Lakes. We stopped in for a couple of drinks. We were served by Tom who was an absolute gem. He asked what we liked and gave some reccomendations. We didn't have any food, but the menu looked good and we saw others enjoying a bite to each. If we're ever in the Lakes again, we would 100% visit again. Fabulous offering and so many quirky decor elements to discover.

Cracking tardis like pub in Windermere. Eclectic decor, great range of beers and ciders. Good selection of quirkily named, reasonably priced meals. Friendly staff. Well worth a visit.
Giovanni A — Google review
The Crafty Baa in Windermere turned out to be one of the most fun and memorable pubs we visited on our trip. The vibe was superb—warm, cozy, and quirky with lots of character in its interiors. The décor had a unique, almost rustic charm mixed with creative touches, making it feel inviting and different from the usual pubs. We tried the apple cider and a strawberry + kiwi flat cider, both refreshing and packed with flavor, perfect to enjoy while soaking in the atmosphere. Their drinks menu is impressive, especially the large selection of craft beers, which would excite any beer lover. They also offer a wide variety of cocktails and food, making it a great spot whether you want just a drink or a full evening out. Overall, The Crafty Baa is a fantastic stop in Windermere, blending excellent drinks, quirky style, and an unforgettable vibe.

An absolutely superb themed bar. Great atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor seating. The Baa had an excellent range of beers, ciders and ales on tap as well as refrigerated bottled beers, lagers, cider, IPA and ales. Pipped music sets the scene. Ask for Tom to start your next drinking journey.
Darran L — Google review
This place is amazing, I visited Windermere for work as a travelling bridal makeup artist, and as I was staying over, I wanted to check out somewhere local. The Crafty Baa is such a fun quirky pub and you can see all the hard work and dedication the family have put into creating this place. I had no idea about the haunted room so I had to see for myself, there were folks in there so I didn't get a proper look, but I'll bring my husband next time and we will get a table there. It didn't occur to me that the Crafty Baa meant that it was all craft beers, but with help from the staff, I chose the 1664 IPA, I'm not a beer drinker but it was actually quite nice. For food I couldn't decide between Mac and cheese balls or the good cluckin chicken wrap, so I ordered both and boy were they delicious! It looks small on the outside but there are tables on every floor and the place was packed, I sat outside on the porch. They had a coal fire inside which was lovely but too hot for me, however outside had a heater for when the night air got chilly, there was also shelter when it rained a little. I was visiting on my own and overall had a fantastic wander out before retiring back at the hotel. This one is a place to visit and I'll definitely be back

Lovely cocktail bar located in Bowness, by lake Windermere. Lovely service and atmosphere. Good selection of cocktails, but pricey. Extra £5 for their signature version of classic cocktails, with not much difference to the classic version on the menu - ie: smoke in an old fashioned.

Lacking a savoury aspect, sandwiches small and skinny and bread dry. This was £68 for two, voucher bought last November 2024 when the afternoon tea looked indulgent now September 2025 and the owners obviously cutting back and using cheaper ingredients. Would not go back, would advise this is worth no more than £17 pp.

The Cavendish Arms Cartmel is a charming hotel located in a 16th-century coaching inn, offering low-key rooms and a cosy restaurant. For an exceptional dining experience, guests can visit Simon Rogan's L'Enclume, which has been awarded two Michelin stars. Another option is Rogan and Co, known for its excellent cuisine and relaxed atmosphere.
Chanced across this whilst looking for a special pub in the area for my wife’s birthday and it didn’t disappoint. The food was amazing, all the way down to the portion sizes, in a market where the portion sizes are increasing and you feel bad for not finishing, these guys nailed it. The staff were friendly, especially a French waiter who had just started, he had a real respectful humour and great manner about him, honestly someone like this can make a great meal perfect. We had crab and salmon starters and halloumi fries with chilli jam. Then for our mains we had beef roasts and the beef was wow, just wow, perfectly cooked, nice and tender. The veg was amazing, buttery and perfectly cooked. The roast potatoes were a 4/5 but still great. And the gravy was lovely. Finally for pudding I had the pear tarte with biscoff ice cream. The whole thing was delicious. Will definitely return.

Cartmel was a beautiful little village, with a few pubs, shops and racecourse. The hotel restaurant/bar is decorated beautifully and had lots of character. The beer garden at the back of the hotel, is very charming, with a river running at the bottom of it. We booked in for dinner on our first night. The service was great and the food was really tasty;however, quite expensive for the quality and quantity. The following morning we asked to sit with our friends who were also staying. The waitress made it clear that she was not happy with this and we had to ask to have clean glasses and our food took an awfully long time to arrive. The waitress was quite rude to be fair. The second morning was much better and a much better experience. We booked a small double room. I was expecting small; however, not tiny. We were unable to use the plugs by the bed, due to no space next to the cabinets. The window and sills, skirting boards etc need a good paint. There was an odd smell in the bathroom. The room was kept clean whilst we were there and the tea, coffee etc were a nice addition.

Beautiful food! Absolutely great steak and ale pie, so very much tender beef and tasty pastry top. Really lovely sticky toffee pudding, and a great pint of stout that went with it perfectly. Shout out to the lovely french guy who served us, made us feel right at home. If you love good food, go here!

Nestled in a beautiful lake district village this pub is an ideal location for short stays or a quick bite. Our experience however was a little sour due to the comments received as we arrived. Me and my fiancee were using the cavendish as a bed for the night so we could visit L' enclume for her birthday. Upon arrival we were asked if we were dining with them and we excitedly said we were going to the other restaurant. This invoked a remark about our personal appearance which genuinely upset my faincee. She was already worried ( as we are basically working class people) about what outfit she had brought and how we wouldn't be good enough to visit a posh restaurant. These thoughts were already simmering under the service anyway, so to have someone point it out was just completely unnecessary in our eyes. Thankfully (after reassuring her for over an hour) the night went off without a hitch. It's a shame because the room was reasonably priced and the breakfast was delicious. We don't think, however, we will be returning on our future visits. I encourage people to give this place a chance though as the pub atmosphere is lovely. It was just ruined for us by the remarks of one member of staff. We know we don't have much money. This was a one time occasion, we don't need it reinforced to us.
Joe G — Google review
Absolutely awesome place. From the moment we arrived the service was brilliant! We sat in the garden next to the stream- what a location for a roast. The food was with us very quickly, was great quality and super tasty. With nice refreshing local pint as well 😜 Yes it’s a bit costly but well worth the money
Nick B — Google review
Food was delicious! Atmosphere was great. Burger was to die for (Brie and maple bacon what a combo). Food isn’t cheap but you pay for what you get and that is quality cooked food that tastes amazing. Great selection of wines, beers, and cocktails. Negroni was made well. Lots of people in so the pub had great ambience but wasn’t so busy you couldn’t hear yourself think. Would fully recommend visiting this place. Staff were all lovely and attentive. Even if they were rushed off their poor feet. Come here if you visit Cartmel I guarantee you’ll have a lovely time.

An excellent experience for us both: The service was very friendly, and I was recommended the blade of beef which came with very tasty gravy and was slow-cooked for etreme tenderness. My wife had the seared Salmon, which she greatly enjoyed, followed up with the white chocolate cremeux, which was lovely. We really had a lovely time and would recommend this restaurant to anyone

We ended up at this restaurant by accident — we checked the menu and decided to give it a try. I'm allergic to many things, so I was really happy to find food I could eat, and they also had vegan options 🙏🏻 I ordered the Vegan Curry with wild rice and gluten-free pita. It was the BEST VEGAN CURRY I've ever had — perfectly spicy, the flavors were beautifully balanced, and the texture was AMAZING. Absolutely delicious. I wanted to order the Vegan Curry to go, but unfortunately, they didn’t have any takeout containers 😟 The next dish was a large salad bowl with grilled chicken. It had cabbage in it (my husband said it was delicious, but I don’t eat cabbage). The salad was simple but tasty — I enjoy simplicity on a plate. The chicken was a bit dry and slightly too salty. But overall, I was really happy with my dish — it pleasantly surprised me and tasted great. My husband ordered a soup, which was supposed to be with leek and parmesan, but it turned out to be broccoli cream soup instead. It came with a bread roll and he really enjoyed it. For his main dish, he ordered stewed beef in some kind of sauce with potatoes. The beef pulled apart perfectly — it was super tender, soft in flavor, and not starchy at all. My husband eats a lot of beef and really knows when it's done well vs. when it’s tough — and this one was EXCELLENT. The potatoes had horseradish which added a great touch, and together with the rest of the dish, it was a true taste sensation. The only downside: they served margarine instead of butter. MARGARINE IS UNHEALTHY — it should be real butter. Overall, we highly recommend this place. I left satisfied, full, and without any allergic reaction. Everything was fresh, well-prepared, not burnt, and not greasy. Fantastic food — we hope they never change the quality. The ladies behind the bar could be a little friendlier. The young man delivering the food was very nice. The interior has a traditional English style. WE RECOMMEND THIS PLACE FOR THE FOOD – TOTALLY WORTH IT. 10/10

Place was nice, as were the staff. Main meals were quite good, though we found the soup of the day (Cauliflower and Parmesan) to be rather bland and watery in taste, very disappointing overall, and the chips whilst nice and chunky were ok, but weren't as good as we've had elsewhere in the region on our trip, or Keswick itself for that matter. We did find that this place had room for us though for dinner, add it's much bigger inside than other Pubs in the immediate area.

This is a great pub with a brilliant menu. Not only that, the quality of food is excellent. Is real attention to detail with healthy mix of classic pub food and something a little different too. Service was amazing, very friendly staff made us feel welcome and catered to our every need from start to finish. I will definitely be returning to this pub next time I come to Keswick. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a hearty meal after a long day of walking.

Really enjoyed my visit here. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and very attentive throughout, which made the whole experience even better. The food was absolutely delicious—proper hearty pub fare done really well. The beef cobbler in particular was a standout, rich and comforting, and definitely something I’d recommend to anyone visiting. A lovely spot that I’d be more than happy to come back to.

Came here after being basically ignored somewhere else around the corner and glad we did. Found an absolute gem. Instantly felt warm and welcome, despite the place being mostly empty at first (a shame!) The food was delicious and you get a fair amount too! It also won’t empty your wallet, definitely fairly priced. The beef (both braised and on the pie) melted in your mouth, the gammon was also very tasty. We will hopefully be returning. The haggis & black pudding starter (although not for everyone, of course) was also very nice. I highly recommend stopping in for a bite to eat and a drink. Also very friendly to furry friends although your experience may vary depending on quality of the canine company!

Came in for a steak and a pint, the food was the usual run of the mill flavourless chain pub microwave type food you’d get in weatherspoons. Friendly staff good food and good service. Me and the gf had the steak and ale pie with veg and potatoes and was really nice. Didn't have to wait long at all. We then had sticky toffee pudding with custard each and that was also lovely. Hit a jug of custard each. The funny thing is when we walked past the entrance the next day out springer tried pulling us back into the place. Dogs aren't allowed on the carpeted area as a rule but are allowed everywhere else. We was luck because our table was on the tiled area near the beer garden door. Would eat there again.

Great pub,dog friendly, top quality food,i would give 10 stars if there was this choice. I had the lamb and mint pie my son had the lamb shoulder, the meat fell off the bone and the lamb in the pie was cooked to perfection and plenty of it . Best of all no gimmicks (chips in buckets,or little fry baskets ) and proper gravy not out of a gravy granuel tub . staff are warm and welcoming and great, lots of people with full tummy's and happy sleepy dogs.

The four of us wanted a Sunday roast. Reviews of The Bank Tavern looked ideal. There was a choice of lamb or beef, unfortunately we chose beef. The Yorkshire pudding, vegetables and the roast potato were fine but the beef was as tough as old boots. We were offered serrated knives to cut the beef but needed serrated teeth to chew it!! The plates weren’t warm so the meal got cold very quickly. So disappointing!!

I have really enjoyed visiting The Bank Tavern on both my visits to Keswick this year. In May i dined here twice with friends and i was so impressed with it i came back again whilst in town, with my partner in September There is lots to choose from between the menu and the specials board and I've not struggled at all to find something different and delicious on each of my 3 visits. My partner has a vegan and gluten free diet and she had no issues finding options that she could eat too. Food is very tasty and comes in decent sized portions at a very reasonable cost. There's a nice, warm atmosphere in The Bank Tavern and the staff have always been nice and friendly. Oh, cracking pint of Guiness too. Definitely recommend 👌

Went in for Sunday Lunch/Dinner. The head honcho behind the bar is a splendid chap, supported by staff operating at the highest level. While the beer selection is the usual Keswick standard (low) there were a couple of beverages that proved adequate and better than the other pubs in the town. The food however was on another level: quickly served, piping hot, and truly delicious. Go here to eat and you will be satiated.

What a great cozy place to stay for a night or two! Our room was small but quite cozy and clean! The staff is very friendly and helpful but the best part is their restaurant with a delicious menu! You can’t definitely miss their cheese and spinach soufflé, pears salad and the toffee pudding!

Stayed the night and had an evening meal. Room was fantastic, nicely decorated and well equipped. There was a good selection of local ales, and the burger was one of the best I've ever had!

Fabulously restored building. welcoming staff, great menu and cooking and the kids menu was really welcome too. Short and well chosen wine list, no trouble finding something I wanted. Lovely place for dinner and happy to have found it.

What a find this was! Stopped off for the night on the long journey south from Scotland. Super welcoming , comfortable and beautifully decorated in the room, the pub and the restaurant . One of the best meals we had in our entire fortnight away. Sublime food and well priced for the quality . We were served by Stephanie who was very efficient, friendly and also a good laugh throughout ! Thanks George and Dragon (and Stephanie ) for ensuring our holiday ended on a high

Not a pleasant experience. We had Sunday lunch. The food was nice but overpriced. The lamb was very thinly sliced and disappointing by Cumbrian standards. The restaurant was on the cold side and virtually empty when we were seated. Shortly afterwards a family of 4 arrived and were placed immediately next to us. We then had to listen to toy cars, car keys and every piece of cutlery being thrown on the floor. A bit later another family arrived. The dad thought it was a good idea to chase his young son round the restaurant, and later to allow their kids to watch a kids' show on a mobile without headphones. Not what we were expecting for the prices charged, and we left feeling as if we'd just been to a Wetherspoons.

It was a very quiet Monday lunchtime, service was friendly and efficient and I really appreciated being able to arrange a candle in a pud for my Father's birthday! Soufflé was delicious as always and the ploughman's is extraordinarily good value.

Located in the coastal village of Ravenglass, within the Lake District National Park, The Ratty Arms is a welcoming and family-run pub situated on the platform of the Ravenglass train station. With its charming vintage train-themed decor, this cozy establishment offers a menu filled with hearty favorites to satisfy any appetite. Known for its dog-friendly atmosphere, The Ratty Arms takes pride in spoiling their four-legged visitors with an array of treats such as Gravy Bones and Markies.
Ate here with friends when staying in Ravenglass. A good selection of drinks at the bar, whilst the food menu is relatively small, but hits all the pub classics. There is also a specials board which adds a few items to the menu. As we had a long walk, I went for the cheeseburger and chips - delicious! Whilst a friend had the pie of the day - honestly I had food envy. For dessert I went for the sticky Toffee pudding and my request for "as much custard as possible" was granted (see my photo) whilst another friend had the cinder and ashes sundae. Prices were very reasonable with great service and staff. Dog friendly!

Nice little pub but closed mon - Wednesday. Only seems to be light bites now instead of meals which is such a shame, however the food they do serve is good in value & the drinks are also good. Nice to see its dog friendly too

Thank you Jackie for taking our last minute request to book a table for lunch at 1215pm on new year's eve. Our trip was very last minute, and to be able to get an immediate booking was fantastic. Our train from Lancaster arrived just after midday and we were sat at our window table straight away. Fabulous service and our lunch food was lovely, generous portions, and quality was outstanding. Turkey brie and cranberry baguette and the Christmas turkey stuffing etc baguette were delicious. And we really didn't need the chips but they were lovely too. Highly recommended before and/or after a trip to the steam train. Can't wait to return again in spring/summer.

5th-8th June 2025: lovely to be back this year. 6th-9th June 2024: was nice to see for the first time since we've been coming to Eskdale a beer festival at the Ratty Arms. It was to celebrate the 50th Anniversary. However, it coincided with the Boot Beer Festival and seemed a little disorganised. There was also a train disruption on and while we were then from 1200 noon till 1500hrs, it was fairly dead. Possibly a combination for rail disruption and disorganisation. Bar person was trying to get us to buy beer tokens and said it would be quicker than cash, however, one of us only drank half's and it seemed a very convoluted method. Stick to cash/contactless. 8th-10th June 2023: back again [photo update] Been coming to Eskdale/Ravenglass for many years. Great pub, good food and small selection of real ales. Located just outside of Ravenglass Station. A great first stop before heading into the village of Ravenglass for a mooch round. 23rd-25th May 2022: having been coming to the village of Boot in Eskdale since 2004, we have frequented Ravenglass (via La'al Ratty on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway) many times. The Ratty Arms review remains unchanged, as it's selection of real ales remains good, along with service, cleanliness, dog friendly and location to the railway. Thanks to the older chap in the back that gave Archie our Golden Retriever a treat. A friend of Archies, is a friend of ours. We are yet to sample food, so maybe next time! Only a photo of the 3 of us on the railway this year, and next time we come back, we will be Mr & Mrs!

Love this pub! The staff are so friendly, even with staff shortages. They are full of humour & make sure customers are happy. Dog friendly. The inside eating area overlooks the train station platforms, so you can watch the trains go by. The food is tasty, big portions that are value for money. The steak pie is packed with meat, it's so nice! Plenty of outdoor seating. I would advise booking 24 hrs in advance. It's home cooked food, so it can take a bit longer to cook. 1000% worth it. Can't wait to visit on our next holiday 😁😍😍

Booked this for the first time for my birthday, the reviews looked good so we thought we would give it a try. Long story short, we can’t wait to get back there! Food and service was beyond amazing! Very welcoming and cosy. Very family friendly with a really great kids menu. Our party aged from 2 years to 78 years and we all loved it!

Fun place. Lots of menu items and reasonable prices. Ambiance and decor was very nice, server was friendly and efficient. Food was delivered in a reasonable time frame and was plentiful and hearty even by American standards where every portion could feed an army (way too much)!! Enjoyed all the Halloween decoration including the witch that welcomed you at the door by detecting motion and speaking! Funny!

Fantastic place! Would highly recommend! Great food and very generous portion sizes. I was stuffed afterwards lol. We bought two main meals, two drinks and one dessert and the bill came to just over £40, so very reasonable and great value for money. I highly recommend the "Cinders and Ashes" dessert 😋😋. All the staff provided excellent service and were very friendly.

The Crown Inn Pooley Bridge is a charming pub with cozy rooms and scenic river views. In the summer, guests can enjoy the breathtaking views from the upstairs terrace, while in winter, they can relax by the fire in the bar. The inn is dog-friendly and even donates a portion of bookings with dogs to charity. The traditional pub atmosphere is complemented by an excellent bar serving award-winning ales, lagers, spirits, and whiskies.
The hotel is in a stunning location. Our room had a view over the river. The room was a little small but fine for our stay. The staff were helpful and always friendly and polite. Breakfast was served to you at the table and was delicious. It also was nice to have a comfortable residents' lounge adjacent to the bar.

Friendly staff on arrival and check-in. Quite a few stairs to climb to our room, but the staff were only too happy to help with the luggage and dog! Enjoyed a 3-night stay over August bank holiday weekend, though it was quite pricey! Room was lovely, if a little over-warm.

I've been in for drinks a couple of times with the family and love this place. Super friendly fella behind the bar, a great choice of 4 different Thwaites ales. Comfortable, warm and smart with plenty of tables on the inside, but the terrace overlooking the river is where you want to be (when the weather allows). We have not eaten or stayed here, so can't comment, but it's 5 stars all the way for a great place to have a drink.

Extremely busy due to the amazing weather. Location is stunning with the outside terrace overlooking the river Eamont and the new bridge. We called in for a drink as the venue is dog friendly. Staff was welcoming and we was promptly served. We found an outside table noting the table number. The food menu was suitable for all tastes. We ordered the sharing platter and it arrived within 15 minutes. The meal was delicious. Definitely recommend.

I recently visited The Crown Inn in Pooley Bridge. The setting was stunning – the views are absolutely gorgeous, and the building itself has a lovely, welcoming feel. The staff were also very pleasant and friendly throughout my visit. Unfortunately, the food really let the experience down. I ordered the vegan sausage with mash and onion gravy (£16.50), and it was incredibly disappointing – bland, poorly executed, and not worth the price. For such a beautiful location and warm service, I had expected much better quality from the kitchen. Overall, while the atmosphere and surroundings were lovely, the meal itself was very underwhelming and expensive for what it was.

The hotel is pet-friendly, offering rooms and dining areas for guests with dogs for an additional fee. In addition to the pub's offerings, there are numerous cafes and restaurants in Keswick that welcome dogs.
Stayed for 2 nights. All staff there were very welcoming indeed. Beautiful hotel, and very cosy with a log fire in the bar and restaurant. We booked the signature room, which had everything we needed including a mini bar, kettle, bottled water and coffee machine. We didn't eat there in the evenings, but the breakfasts were exceptional! We had full cumbrian breakfast, which was completely faultless. Probably the best full breakfast we have had from the many hotels that we have stayed in. We will certainly be returning in the near future.

Honestly don’t know where to start. Looked good when we were first going in so was exited. All the food sounded delicious on the menu, oh how wrong we were to be so naive. Starters took about half an hour which is not great but okay, won’t let it kill my vibe. Bur oh my GOSH, the chicken wings were advertised as salt and chili. They were literally the blandest things I’ve ever eaten, just fried and oily with NO flavour, waste of calories and a tenner. To make matters worse the mains literally took about an hour and a half to come after this, the staff were avoiding eye contact and didn’t come to see if we wanted more drinks, which I think is because they knew how long we were waiting. But I work in hospitality myself so I get that it’s not their fault of course but come on, they could have come to check on us, warned us about the wait or given us a drink on the house due to the LONG wait. And then when the ‘hot honey burger’ came, it was literally a fried chicken breast, no flavour, definitely not worth the £20 price tag. And secondly the fish was awful. I didn’t eat it. Overall the experience was bad and upsetting, not many people can afford to eat out in the current financial climate, so we really treated ourselves here because it looked really nice. I’m honestly just upset at spending precious money on it for the experience to be like that. I hope they sort it out because it looked gorgeous and one of the girls that worked there was really nice.
Kate O — Google review
Really disappointed. We used to love coming here but what the hell were they thinking with this "refurb". The main restaurant area has literally been designed to cram as many guests in as they can and they've sure done that. Horrible environment. The whole place looks dated, the bench against the walls looks like it's had some old saggy curtains thrown over it. Service not great, not the worst but paying good money to be passing people their food myself because the waiter couldn't be bothered to ask whose it was....not great. As long as the food is good then I'd let that slide. Oh no, the wings were the most blandest things I'd ever had. Greasy, messy and tasteless. Would not recommend and all and would not recommend dining here. Someone obviously decided to try and make more money by cramming customers in like cattle at the expense of the customer experience. Will be going elsewhere in future.

Another nice stay at this lovely pub. It’s been refurbished since our last stay and it’s been done very tastefully. A warm welcome on arrival and even a room upgrade which pleased my daughter no end as was her first ever hotel stay. Room was clean and spacious and the beds comfortable. Breakfast was one of the best around. Great service and a huge menu choice. All in, a great over night stay and will hopefully be back again in the near future.

We only called in for drinks but decided to eat there after seeing the meals coming out from the kitchen. Lovely decor inside and friendly staff. I had the steak and my wife had the classic cheeseburger. Both were beautifully cooked. Highly recommended

We had a cosy double but I wished I had booked a larger room as it was quite cramped. The floor in the room sloped as it is an old building and so did the bed and furniture. Having said that the facilities provided were excellent and the bed was made every day with replacement coffee and tea when required. Bath house toiletries were a touch of luxury. The bed was very comfortable and air conditioning in the room. Breakfast was lovely with a nice choice of full breakfast and cereal and pasties.

Came in today for some lunch and we loved it, will definitely be back. The atmosphere was great and all service was excellent. We were sat straight away, food came quickly and was very tasty. We decided to stay for a few more drinks after our food and the young lad on Ethan on the bar was fantastic, kept us very entertained haha. According to my husband he poured a great Guinness (but could do with some work on his shamrock). We look forward to returning in the future.

The Brown Horse Inn, located in Winster just three miles away from Bowness, is a charming 1850s coaching inn offering a range of rooms including family options and self-catering facilities. The inn features a rustic restaurant serving dishes made with produce from the owners' farm. The cozy bar and play area outside make it an ideal spot for families. Renowned for its fantastic service and food, this quaint inn has received praise for its steaks and hearty portions.
We had an absolutely fantastic experience at the Brown Horse Pub. The service was exceptional and the staff were so friendly, efficient, and genuinely welcoming, which really made the visit special. The food was outstanding, cooked to perfection, and truly faultless – every dish was full of flavour and beautifully presented. The facilities were spotless and very well-maintained, which added to the overall comfort and enjoyment. I couldn’t be more satisfied with my visit with the family. This place s highly recommended and I’ll definitely be coming back very soon! Great work to all those working in the pub restaurant.

We had a 3 night stay in the 'pods' run by the owners behind the pub and because the food was so good we ate here all 3 nights, no need to go further. We both had the rib-eye steak first night which was deliciously done, juicy and tasty with a lovely garlic and chive butter which made it indulgent. Nice green bean and chunky chips. Yum. Then 2nd night we both chose the chicken and mushroom pie which had been freshly done. Again delicious, plenty of chicken pieces in a lovely creamy sauce and the pastry was flaky and buttery and not too thick. Smooth mash and flavoursome gravy. Yum. Night 3 we actually chose different dishes 😂 my wife had the fish pie which was also delicious, creamy mash, plenty of fish and prawns, generous portion which was polished off. I chose the fish and chips which again was a generous portion, big piece of fish in good crispy batter nicely cooked. Nice tartare sauce, mushy peas and plenty of fries. Really nice. Oh forgot to mention the desserts we shared, 1 sticky toffee pudding, 1 mess dessert and a few dollops of ice cream, all were yummy. Thanks to the staff who were friendly and smiley and attentive at all times and the kitchen crew for producing really good food. Out of the way and some dishes a little pricey but would definitely recommend.

The Black Labrador in Underbarrow, located in the Lake District, is known as one of the best-kept secrets in the area. This charming establishment is dog-friendly and caters to a variety of visitors including day-trippers, fell walkers, and food enthusiasts. It offers a warm welcome and serves delectable dishes that appeal to all generations. The location may be slightly off the beaten path but provides a pleasant drive to and from.
We came here on a fairly busy Sunday afternoon. I had the pork roast, which was very nice, and we ordered extra roast potatoes and greens to go with it — highly recommend! The food was lovely, so no complaints there. That said, we were seated for about 20 minutes before anyone took our order, and our drinks arrived just a minute before the food. As someone who works in hospitality, I completely understand how hectic it can get, especially on a busy day. So this isn’t a moan — just a heads-up that if you’re short on patience, this might not be the place for you during peak times. Otherwise, great food and worth the wait!

Great experience overall! All the ladies who are working in the pub are friendly, professional and kind. Explained to me every meal option I had questions about. I had salmon fillet which was great. Perfectly cooked salmon fillet with well balanced sauce and vegetables. Beer tastes great. The pub itself is clean, bathroom is clean. The place is popular in the evening so try to get a reservation. But we came in at 6 and got the table. So I think it depends on the day of the week.

Amazing food quality, lots to choose from their food and even more impressive drinks menu. A little bit surreal walking through the old-classic pub entrance to then be in a lovely cozy living room-dining room set up. Service seemed a bit all over the place with a number of different waiters coming to wait on us not knowing who had already been before or what had been ordered with the others, served by 5 different staff members across the hour there. But then again it was a very busy Sunday evening.
James J — Google review
Cold hair for Sunday lunch although it took a little while to come we weren’t too bothered and he was an extremely good meal however it took a long while for the plates to be cleared and then the desert menu to be brought to us and then even longer wait before we went to the counterto order the desserts from there after an hour we left without desert. This is a great shame as the food is extremely good it is just the organisation speed of service that let’s sit down.

Never having been there before, my wife and I recently treated ourselves to two nights at the Wild Boar for our 40th wedding anniversary. What a great choice we made ! As people who rarely find things completely faultless, we met our match with the Wild Boar. The staff were at the top of their game. Naturally friendly and with a ready smile wherever you met them. They are a real credit to this place. Dinner was a real treat, especially the lamb. The all important bed was very comfortable and, coupled with the quiet surroundings allowed us both great nights sleep. Finally, breakfast was very relaxing and served yet again by friendly, talkative staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. So, would I go back ? Yes, in a heartbeat. The Wild Boar is a hotel I can certainly recommend.

Took my daughter her for their alternative afternoon tea as she saw it online and wanted to go. Did not disappoint! The welcome was warm and personal, the staff were extremely friendly, personable and added greatly to the experience. The food was even better than expected, a very welcome twist to the generic bog standard of afternoon teas. Really has to be experienced to understand the difference. Enjoyed it so much I will be returning even if it's not for a special occasion! They also will be doing a Christmas themed afternoon tea at the appropriate time too. Sounds intriguing!

Have only eaten here. Had the savoury afternoon tea previously which I loved. Nice location. I visited again recently and went for the steak. Quite pricey and not the biggest portions. Bought their home-made ale which is made on site as it's lovely. Lovely decor and staff were attentive.

Beautiful hotel with amazing food evening meal and breakfast were both unreal. Service is fantastic. The room we stayed in was lovely. We will definitely be back as we didn't have time to explore the estate grounds and would also like to try the afternoon tea which was recommended to us by our server for the evening meal (not sure of his name although he was South African and was really helpful and friendly, so thank you to him)

Hotel is quaint, rooms are well equipped and comfortable. There are wellington boots and umbrellas you can borrow to take advantage of the countryside walk. The staff are friendly and attentive. The restaurant offers a good selection of locally sourced ingredients. The food is very good albeit quite rich. The breakfast offers a good selection of pastries, fruit and yogurt, I would highly recommend their fruit loaf. The choice of hot foods is good, the omelette was lovely and the Wild Boar breakfast was plentiful, although the black pudding and bacon were reheated and therefore a bit dry. There are a lot of stairs in this hotel so maybe not so good if you have reduced mobility.
Angela M — Google review
We enjoyed the alternative afternoon tea so much last year that we made a return visit this week. However, this was a totally different experience and very disappointing. The service was poor. The food was overcooked, query re-heated? Can't believe that pork crackling is served as part of it, cheap and nasty. The scone was tiny but very tasty, and the other desserts were very good. On reflection i should have addressed this at the time, but as we were celebrating an occasion it didnt feel appropriate.
Carol G — Google review
We stayed for the for the weekend to celebrate my partners birthday. We usually stay at Low Wood Bay but thought we’d give this a try. The hotel itself is full of character, with its low ceilings, twists and turns and rich history! We were happy to receive a free bottle Prosecco in the room however it was warm and very cheap - not drinkable, and on top of that not even anywhere to set down the glasses! The room was smaller and less equipped / lower spec than we’re used to, the bathroom being extremely small also meant there were very few places to put things other than the floor! The shower was great though! Friday nights meal in the Grill & Smokehouse was a disappointing quality and we both left our steaks unfinished. The service was fabulous though and this needs highlighting. Breakfast however was an all round great experience with plenty of choice from both the buffet and the hot menu. We very much enjoyed the start of the day. The bar is cosy and warm in the evening, maybe would be a little more relaxing with softer lighting, it was very bright! All in all a nice place to stay but it’s pitched as a 5 star which it definitely isn’t. We liked its location but would be unlikely to return as we prefer a more luxurious room.

Really enjoyed my meal here. Stopped here thanks to a trip advisor suggestion on my way back from a festival. The place did not disappoint. Really friendly staff and the food was so tasty and fresh. I got the super roast as i was very much in need for some proper food haha. Loved it. Finished off the meal with a gorgeous apple, raisin and cinnamon crumble. If you are in the area then i really recommend this place.

We stayed here for the weekend. Room was clean, spacious and had the biggest, fluffiest bath sheets I've ever seen. The breakfast was amazing and really set us up for the day. All the staff were so friendly and helpful, the place has a genuinely lovely atmosphere. To top it off for us was that it is genuinely dog friendly. Had a lovely stay and will be going back in the autumn.

Great night at the boot and shoe in. Very friendly unfortunately whilst we were there they had an electric problem in the morning which set an alarm off continuously from early hours which couldn’t be helped and electric was back on so could have a shower around 6.30/7am. All I’d say is kitchen staff are quite loud/music etc early morning and evening. Our room was the closest but radio could maybe be a bit quieter first thing in morning, but we had food there that night which was delicious and we had breakfast next morning which was equally delicious and staff very friendly. A great dog friendly local village pub to stop in.

We went today for Sunday lunch, and I'm not exaggerating when I say it was the best pub roast we've ever had! Absolutely delicious and very generous portions. The staff were welcoming and very friendly. Highly recommend if you're in the area.

Visited here with partner and dog about 6pm on a Monday evening, didnt book as we didnt expect it to be busy. By 7pm it was full, but it is only a small place. Popular with the locals who are friendly. Baskets of games for adults and children. Servers were polite and friendly even though they were rushed off their feet. Food delicious! Chef catered for me and made me black pudding mash instead of mustard mash. Partner had chicken burger and I had sausage and mash. Food average priced but drinks expensive. Star knocked off as it needs some tlc.

We booked to have a meal on a Saturday night during half term. Lovely quirky place. The food was great, the staff very friendly. I'd go again if the area. Two tips, there is a large free car park on the opposite side the road rather having park outside on the small road. Also, make sure you book a table. Whilst we was there they turned many people away due to being fully booked up.

Ben and his team were superb, made us feel like we had been going in there for years. Nothing was too much trouble and we left as friends. The band we saw there were also superb. Thanks for a great couple of nights. Russ and Lisa x

Just wanted to say thank you for your kindness today when I had to cancel our booking for dinner. My husband Matthew was rushed into hospital early hours of today and will be in for a few days. We also had to cancel our week at Whitbarrow Holiday Park, so we are a bit sad. Hopefully we will get back to see your amazing pub and gorgeous food inyour restaurant. Thank you for your kindness. Nestled on the outskirts of the stunning Lake District National Park, the Hare & Hounds is a charming country inn that dates back to the 16th century. Originally a coaching house, this delightful gastropub offers a warm and inviting atmosphere for both two-legged and four-legged guests alike. With an enticing menu featuring hand-rolled pizzas and mouthwatering burgers made from locally sourced ingredients, it’s no wonder this spot has become a favorite among locals and visitors.
Had lunch there and stayed overnight. And breakfast the following day. Everything very good. Room was clean, comfortable, tastefully decorated, and the shower was the best I've ever experienced in a hotel. Modern controls, great flow. Wife very happy being able to wash her hair. Bed was comfortable. Service was personal and friendly.

I have had many a fantastic meal in the Hare and Hounds at Levens. Me and my family always go here and bring the two dogs as they are a dog friendly pub. The food is always absolutely delicious, I would highly recommend any of their pizzas and anything from the grill - superb!

We only visited the pub for food. Excellent selection and great service. A lovely location in a quiet village setting. The pub was very busy, I would definitely recommend booking in advance to guarantee a table. The staff were very attentive and friendly and even sang happy birthday to my daughter.. dogs are made very welcome in the bar area but if you don't have a furry friend the restaurant section looked really nice too. We ate in the bar ourselves. Highly recommend. Enjoy 😊

This is a lovely pub with excellent accommodation and dining. The rooms are tastefully decorated, spotless, and comfortable. Every member of the personnel was charming and helpful. This place is a real find, and close to main roads while being situated in a picturesque village.

Unfaultable stay at the Hare and Hounds for my birthday weekend. The room we stayed in was spotless and stunning. Great views out the Windows as well. Food and drinks were amazing with some food from the menu raising money for local playing fields. Lastly, the staff. They couldn’t have done more for us from the moment we checked in to hours after we checked out. Recommending walks for us, recommending places to go and eat and drink and our following destination. We will 100% be returning to the Hare and Hounds. 10/10 stay

Ordered takeaway Sunday roast. We weren't sure what to expect but it was really good! Beef was tender, Yorkshires were "proper Yorkshires", plenty of veg. Really good quality, especially for the low price. The burger was apparently very good too 💯 Quick delivery and friendly delivery driver. We'll definitely order again.

We stayed here for one incredibly busy Sunday night but didn't eat. The pub is huge especially the outside part with live music on. It was a decent pint with friendly staff. The large room with high ceilings facing the back yard was excellent & clean with good facilities though the bathroom was tired & ideally needed updating. We were warned about the noise before hand from the music so it wouldn't suit everyone.

Absolutely recommend there roast sharer platter for 2! The food is stunning, the portions are huge and great value for money. The staff were all very friendly and overall a lovely atmosphere to dine x
Danielle H — Google review
It came relatively quickly, however for the price was absolutely appalling. We ordered two burgers, two Parmesan truffle fries and some onion rings. The burgers for the most part were fine, very chewy, although this was the only positive for the order. The fries, or should I say tub of Parmesan, were awful. There were very little fries which very greasy and drowned in Parmesan which made them almost inedible. It was almost as if the whole supply of Parmesan from the restaurant had been dumped on top. The onion rings were worst of all, when I first picked the box up I thought it was some sort of sauce they were in however upon opening the box it turned out to be oil. Not just a little bit at the bottom, it was to the point of filling the entire bottom of the container with oil which was clearly visible when flipped upside down on the lid. You couldn’t even pick up the food as it had turned to mush. Very poor food for the price we paid and certainly wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who is local or chooses to pass by. If I knew how to attach images I would. Shocking.
Ryan R — Google review
Can't fault the staff as they were polite and helpful. The room however! A quick check around the room showed numerous cob webs everywhere so no idea when it had been last hoovered properly. If that wasn't bad enough ( but bearable ) my partner moved a chair to find a used pair of men's boxers discarded on the floor! Won't be returning again!
Craig C — Google review
We stayed at this hotel and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. The room itself was not the cleanest, but we could have overlooked that. What really shocked and upset us was when a man unlocked and entered our room as if it was his. When we reported this to the staff, we were first told it was housekeeping, but later they admitted it was a mistake and another guest had been given our room key. This was extremely unsettling and unacceptable. On top of that, when we returned to sleep, we discovered that the duvet was torn and, even worse, the middle of the bed was wet. That was the final straw. Never ever again

Best thing about this place is the staff. Felt like I'd been drinking here years. Couldn't do enough The food was hot and out in fab time so no problems there The transparency over late nights is refreshing but didn't affect our trip.

The Red Lion Inn is a historic 15th-century coaching inn located in the picturesque village of Hawkshead in the English Lake District. This traditional Lakeland inn offers comfortable and distinct en-suite guest rooms, along with a warm and friendly welcome. Guests can enjoy free cooked breakfast and casual pub grub during their stay. The inn's charming ambiance, complete with wooden beams and an open fire, provides the perfect setting for a relaxing evening.
Had lunch here in September 2024 and we still think and talk about it! Gnocchi with blue cheese sauce, bacon and rocket. What a beauty! Great atmosphere as well, the fireplace was lit and there was music softly playing in the background. Would go back in a heartbeat.

Extremely friendly staff, delightful food! And very nice pub garden, sticky chicken sandwich was delicious as well as the chowder, with such good choice. Two suggestions would just be to have a fence by the end of the pub garden to block out the bins and there was a slight odd smell inside. Would make it absolutely perfect!

Absolutely brilliant staff. Chilli beef nachos, steak and ale pie, Black Sheep ale and lemonade all fantastic. Dining area inside spacious and cool on a hot summer's day. Gem of a pub.
Mathew S — Google review
In my humble opinion, I think this is the best pub in Hawkshead. The pub had four draft ales on - all well kept. The Swan Blonde from Bowness Bay Brewery was the best but the others were deserving of a sample! The Sunday Roast was perfect. The staff were great in looking after the customers. The inn dates back to at least the 15th century, making it the oldest pub in the village. The building, which is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England, was refaced in the 19th century, giving it a stucco exterior with a slate roof, though it retains much of its historic character.

With shared facilities with a nearby hotel, guests have access to outdoor activities in the surrounding hills and waters.
We had a lovely meal here whilst staying nearby at 'Another Place' (5 mins walk). The views are great and there is outdoor seating for better weather days. The menu offers really good pub options with vegan and gluten free options as well as plenty of more traditional fayre. There's also a kids menu available. Everything was nicely cooked and the service was friendly enough. We would definitely return if in the area.

Only popped in for an evening meal, quick service, quick delivery of food. Got the steak pie main. Carrot was soft and slightly sweet, steak was tender though the pie could have done with a touch more pastry. chips were lush, broccoli seemed undercooked but didnt detract from the overall meal much, got a sticky toffee pudding desert which was exceptional. Would definitely dine here again. Plenty of parking spaces and rather spacious inside which is nice.

Just came here for a Sunday roast after a massive hike. My Lord! This place makes an amazing roast. Have the beef and some fried oyster mushrooms in Asian slaw to start. Every mouthful was fantastic. Could not recommend this place enough if staying up in beautiful ullswater! Also staff were so friendly, the place is dog friendly. And just stunning views!

We visited on a very hot and busy Sunday. We admired the patient attitude of one of the waiting staff as she dealt with some undecided seniors. I watched whilst in an orderly queue for a beer. They really do need more staff. It has been hot for weeks. This hasn’t crept up unannounced. Staff up to maximize potential. That said, the two waiting staff (aforesaid female and one colleague), managed admirably even though the kitchen was also running slowly. Food was ok.
Mike G — Google review
Situated on a very busy road this Inn is hugely overpriced. Tiny rooms with very uncomfortable beds, our bath broke and we couldn’t turn the tap off, no apology and had to push for some sort of remuneration as it ruined our morning. Supper was average although I ordered a vegan pie and was given a beef pie! Croissants were really stale too. Would really recommend staying at its sister hotel ‘Another Place’ far more superior for hardly any extra cost!

Enjoyed a lovely barbecue lunch which was part of a special Saturday event on 23rd August. Great food, friendly staff, and a lovely view if sat at the front of the pub, and the reason we have often dropped in for a drink whilst on holiday or passing through.

Location and food was brilliant. Considering we were one of the very first to be served that day, the person serving at the bar had a terrible attitude and was quite frankly rude. Lots of flies kicking about too and the table hadn’t been wiped (also poor considering we were the first of the day to sit down on it!)

Lovely local pub, nice inside and friendly staff. On the road but with a small car park. Small beer garden also. Food was nice, but room for improvement. Not really worth £18 per main and £10 per child in my opinion. The pub dog is very friendly and likes to roam free. Great if you love dogs but not so much if you don’t.

Two great evenings spent in the pub while camping near by. Service was excellent. Very attentive and efficient. Spilt a pint, and another one arrived soon after to replace it. Sit back, Relax with great views and atmosphere to match! We have been visiting Bowness for years and have somehow missed out on the Boater Bar until now. What a mistake! This bar and restaurant is a true gem with its stunning views of the lake and various seating options, including a large outdoor sun terrace. The Bar offers a great selection of wines, spirits, and craft beers at very reasonable prices. nd for sports enthusiasts, the bar does not disappoint; numerous large screen TVs are strategically placed so you can catch the action from almost any seat. We was lucky enough to visit on a Tuesday and made the best of the Pizza offer they had on, we would have loved to try a coffee and cake after but our stomachs were so full! But defiantly on our visit. We visited on a Tuesday, which happened to be their pizza offer day, and I must say, the pizza did not disappoint! It was delicious and definitely hit the spot. While we were tempted to indulge in coffee and cake afterward, we were too full to manage another bite – but it’s definitely on our list for our next visit! If your visiting the area area the Bar is easily accessible with multiple parking options nearby. The staff are super friendly, enthusiastic, and contribute to the bar's great atmosphere. We can't wait to return on our next visit to Bowness. thanks Rebecca.

Lakefront Perfection at The Boaters Bar The Boaters Bar is an absolute gem tucked right on the edge of Lake Windermere—easily one of the best dining views in the Lake District. We enjoyed the most incredible homemade pizzas, perfectly crisp and full of flavour, all while overlooking the glittering water and a marina full of sleek, high-end boats. It doesn’t get more picturesque than this. The atmosphere strikes a lovely balance between laid-back and luxe, and their house-made gins are a must-try—refreshing, smooth, and the perfect lakeside indulgence. Whether you're popping in for a casual bite or sipping cocktails as the sun sets over the lake, Boaters Bar delivers on all fronts. Great food, stellar drinks, and unbeatable views. Don’t miss it!

We had a prebooked "Crafternoon Tea" which comprised of a flight of six beers and two pizzas of our choice. We were given a welcome by a very friendly and enthusiastic member of staff, Rebecca, who showed us to a reserved lake view table. She clearly explained all our options, the background to the bar and the beer we would be tasting. The beer was good and the pizzas were great. Well it's a small bar, with another larger room up a small flight of steps, where you will find many tables and a dartboard. That said the room isn't as big as it sounds. On the small step way you will find the toilets, which are small but adequate and clean. Back on the ground floor, you have a well stocked bar, bar stools two, may three tables beside the window. I can imagine that the atmosphere would be good and cosy, particularly on an evening, if they had their coal fire going. Anyway the staff were friendly, as were the locals. Prices were competitive and comparable with everywhere else.

Though plenty of spirits were available most customers were drinking beer when we visited (7pm Saturday). The feisty female owner took no nonsense from a group of somewhat noisy callow youths and ejected one after something smashed. Horse racing on the TVs. Go for the beer (well-known brands) not the wine.

Wife's steak was also amazing and too notch peppercorn sauce! The service is exceptional, very attentive staff make you feel very welcome! The view is also amazing overlooking the valley! We will definitely come back whenever we are in the lakes! Great job team, keep up the good work!

We stayed 2 nights, smaller room but had everything we needed including a comfortable bed. Stunning location with a lovely view from our room. The meals are well worth the money as they are delicious. The staff are friendly and helpful and most accommodating with requests if they can help. The ducks and several cats on the property are a nice country touch. We would be more than happy to stay there again if we are back this way.

This was our second time going to the Mortal Man (as live over 5hours away) and it was even better! I remember last time we came I named it the best roast dinner I’d ever had! And it still holds that title! The service was also faultless! Such friendly & helpful staff! Highly recommend!

Had a lovely stay at the mortal man! Very friendly and welcoming staff, gorgeous hotel in a lovely location at a reasonable price. Our room had a gorgeous view. The place has an old fashioned, family run feel to it with lovely cosy rooms and modern facilities. The pub and food were delicious and had an open fire! The many cute and friendly cats were also a bonus! Highly recommended, will definitely be back for a longer stay next time!

Have visited this pub several times over the years and always been good but based on several visits recently whilst staying in the village it’s doing very well since the takeover in 2023. The food we had was excellent with some interesting menu choices and backed up by a decent choice of draft beers too. The service was efficient but friendly and engaging at all times. Prices not cheap but then given the location and the nearby competition it compares well. Enjoying a drink in the garden with the sun shining and spectacular views takes some beating!

A fantastic place to have a drink and food. The pub is set amongst gorgeous scenery, that really makes you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. The atmosphere inside is warm and cosy, which was needed during our visit as the weather outside was very wet! The staff were incredibly friendly, whilst the food was delicious. We visited twice, the first time having the venison pie which is highly recommended, and sausage and mash the second time which was also delicious. Very dog friendly, with at least half a dozen faithful friends inside when we visited - they also have a small group of gorgeous white and ginger cats roaming the area who are incredibly friendly. If you're looking for a great place to relax and get food, this is the place. My only advice, would be to make sure you have a torch or enough battery on your phone if you're walking there as the road in and out after sunset is pitch black with no road lighting.

Loved our visit here. We arrived in the dark but what a view to wake up to the following morning! Nice clear day and could see for miles. Located in a real beauty spot in the heart of the lakes. Pefect place to relax and unwind or run, climb or cycle. Great location for visiting other areas of the lakes too!

The Masons Arms is a charming pub located on Cartmell Fell, offering stunning views of Winster and Lyth Valleys. The rustic ambiance with ancient beams and old fireplaces creates a dreamy atmosphere for both locals and tourists. The award-winning pub serves excellent food featuring local treats like Lakeland damson and pork sausage, local game, and Cartmel lamb shank.
Lovely warm welcome and really attentive and pleasant service. Food was lovely but the twice fried chips were probably the best I've ever had. The rib eye steak was very thin and I didn't think they'd possibly have been able to cook it rare but they did! Very impressed. Lovely little village pub that's well worth visiting!

What a fantastic culinary experience! And great food too! Andy’s eat your way round the world meals are always not to be missed. However last night , the meal from Japan was worthy of any high end restaurant but at a price which was excellent value. How lucky are we to have such great food in our tiny village! Superb Andy! And the beer is very good too, Hal! Thank you! And a quick mention for the lovely waiting staff as they were informative and very sociable!

Popped in for food on our final day staying close to Gilcrux. Absolutely fabulous pub. Made to feel at home as soon as we walked in. Lovely warm cosy atmosphere and very dog friendly. Food was excellent and the choice of zero or low alcohol drinks was one of the best I've seen in a pub. If your in the area definitely call in.

We ate here tonight - 3 adults, 2 children and honestly just had the nicest time! The food is absolutely brilliant, highly recommend the sea bass and the kids meals were great too- chicken strips were a hit. The pub is lovely just for a drink too if they are not serving food. We’ll definitely be back!

Would like to thanks Paul . Very humble and courteous. Suggested good quick hikes for walk-around . Room exceeded our expectations . Cosy , quiet ,beautiful view and with good facilities inside the room. Parking was provided in the hotel. Though a bit tight but had enough spots to park in. Breakfast was included with the room. Had to walk to Angel Inn for restaurant just in front of hotel. Subtle ambience with cosy environment. You can order from breakfast menu for hot foods. We ordered English breakfast. It was delicious. Service was fast and staff were humble . They served hot milk as well on request. Would 100% recommend . Based on its location , service and value.

Absolutely amazing experience from start to finish! The hotel was easy to find, had its own parking and was located in the middle of down with everything on your doorstep. We were greeted by a lovely man who explained all the COVID safety measures and made us feel welcome from the start. The rooms were modern and clean and had a beautiful view of the lake. The following morning we had breakfast (which was included) which was really nice and the staff there were also amazing. Over all I could truly not recommend the hotel enough as I could not find any fault with our stay!

A warm and inviting B&B, we had a lovely weekend stay and the hosts were great. They helped with anything we needed, the room was lovely and the view was great. The breakfast was very generous and amazing quality, we will definitely be back and recommend to any looking to stay near the lake.

Arrived early morning(9:30am)so we could make the most of our time there. Asked if we was ok to leave car there until check in time. Was greeted by a lovely lady who said we was welcome to check in then as our room was ready. We had a standard double room (room8) and it was spotlessly clean. Breakfast was excellent, had lots to chose from and the staff serving the breakfast was polite and nothing too much trouble at all. The hotel is in a great location, close to shops and lake. Had a lovely overnight stay there and would recommend highly. If we are ever visiting the area again we will be sure to stay here.

Had a lovely weekend at oakbank . We stayed in room 14 and loved the fact that it was outside of the main house. The only issue was the lighting. The room is quite dark with the only natural light coming from the glass paneled door. Could I suggest a brighter bulb or maybe a couple of bedside lamps. Breakfast was lovely with a great choice of items. Will definitely return.

Great, central position in Bowness....BUT....AVOID ROOM 1!!! We stayed for 3 nights....definitely NOT worth £110 a night! The en-suite was small and awkwardly laid out, we burnt our knees on the towel rail when sat on the toilet! It was also quite dirty, the dust and webs covering the whole length of the shower pull cord. The bed was small, but we knew it would be with it being a double room. The mattress was very uncomfortable so we decided to turn it over. BIG mistake as it was very stained on both sides. On the second day I made the mistake of laying on the floor to look for an item that had fallen off the bedside cabinet (cabinet was broken and everything rolled off it.) The carpet absolutely stunk, and to my horror there was the BIGGEST ball of human hair behind the chair I'd ever seen! Looks like it had been there a while....clearly the chair hadn't been pulled out to clean behind recently. The glass was broken on the window and sellotaped up, not the best look for a place of such good reputation. I gashed my arm whilst in the shower, the soap dispenser had VERY sharp edges. I informed a member of staff who immediately got the manager (Danny) but he didn't seem too interested and seemed to think it was my own fault when I showed him the problem. He gave me a plaster but never mentioned it again throughout our stay, never asking if my arm was ok. Pretty bad customer service. A totally different experience from when we stayed in 2015 where nothing was too much trouble and cleanliness seemed to be of a much higher standard. On a positive note....breakfast was delicious and GREAT views from the dining room. We won't be staying again unfortunately.

Lovely people and a proper lake view from our bedroom window. Room was clean and looked to have been recently refurbished probably during covid lockdown earlier this year. Excellent breakfast and a good night sleep on a decent bed. Good location with a number of restaurants a short walk away and only a few minutes walk away from the lake. Highly recommended for a break if you don't want a big chain hotel.
