Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden, located in Kaneohe, is a 400-acre tropical paradise featuring a man-made freshwater lake and hiking trails. The garden offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life with its lush greenery and peaceful ambiance. Visitors can explore different geographical regions of the world through the diverse plant collections while enjoying stunning photo opportunities.
Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden – A Peaceful Paradise on Oʻahu Our visit to Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden was the perfect way to slow down and immerse ourselves in Oʻahu’s lush beauty. 🌿 A Scenic Arrival The drive to the garden takes you through a charming residential area, and as soon as you reach the entrance, the scenery opens into something spectacular. We stopped at the park office, where one of the staff kindly explained the importance of this and other parks in the area—sharing insight that made our visit even more meaningful. 🥾 Exploring the Trails The garden offers many trails to wander, and we happily spent hours exploring them. Every path felt like a new chapter in a story, with towering greenery, colorful plants, and plenty of wildlife. We spotted different wild animals and butterflies, which made the experience even more magical. 🍱 Lunch with a View We packed our own lunch and enjoyed it surrounded by nature—an incredibly peaceful break before continuing our walk. 🌦️ Helpful Tips for Visitors • It gets hot here, and at times a little wet—be prepared for changing weather. • Wear shoes with good traction, especially if you’re tackling the muddier trails. • Bring insect repellent, and please make it an environmentally friendly one to help protect the plants and wildlife. 🌸 Final Thoughts Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden is truly a perfect place to enjoy nature. With its lush landscapes, peaceful trails, and rich biodiversity, it’s more than just a park—it’s a sanctuary. Whether you’re here for a quiet stroll, photography, or simply to take in the views, you’ll leave refreshed and inspired.

What a beautiful and amazing place to drive through. They made it super accessible by car. This place is perfect for people that aren’t advanced hikers as nothing is too long and everything is very accessible. The beauty is captivating and super picturesque. You can be here for 30 minutes or you can spend 5 hours here. Bring the family or come on a date. You really cannot go wrong.

100% must do when you visit the island. I took the bus from Waikiki to the gardens. Not too bad of a bus ride and I highly recommend going early in the morning. After walking through a beautiful neighbored you arrive at the gates of the garden. Lush greenery with amazing mountain tops and oversized ancient trees. Breathtaking! Once you arrive to the visitor areas, you can view some fun facts and make your way to the lake. Another jaw dropping moment. Ducks, birds, the VIEW......... sit on the bench to take it all in. It's absolutely beautiful. I can't believe you pay nothing to enter. I would go back 100 times.
Jelica G — Google review
Beautiful free public gardens on the far side of the mountains away from Waikiki. We had a rental car so it was an easy half hour drive. I agree with the recommendations to drive all the way to the end first look around and then work your way back be sure and allow time to stop at the visitor center and get oriented and have a view of the lake and learn more about all the different plants you’ve seen their website has a great detailed map as well. That’s good to preview if you want to see a specific area or species.

Opening hours are 9 am to 4 pm. This is free. This is a drive thru botanical garden with a great scenic view of the mountains. You can stop and walk there are parkings. We did not have the best weather but it is stunning. A must do.
Carine — Google review
Very green and lush garden. Scenic backdrop. Very quiet and peaceful in the further out parking areas. There is a visitor center but nearby parking is difficult. More parking available in far away lots. More to see there anyway. Its mostly a drive through experience from what I can see. Very nice.
Mr. F — Google review
This a 400 acre botanical garden. It is free admission. You drive through a cemetery to reach the entrance. We walked around the visitor center and then through the gardens. One of the docents directed us to go on one of the side trails to see the unique cannonball tree that was currently blooming. Truly a tree I have not seen before. Very cool. There was a light rain when we hiked around. We ended up cutting our hiking short when the rain became heavy. Highly recommend seeing this beautiful garden!
Marie B — Google review
The natural aspects are incomparable but challenging to enjoy. Sadly it's focused on cars driving through. Only the area around the visitor center is clearly marked for plant life. The trails that are further away are unmarked & unmaintained. Pedestrians mostly end up walking on the heavily trafficked road with no shoulder let alone any walking path.

Foster Botanical Garden, located in the heart of Honolulu, has been a tranquil oasis for tropical plants since 1853. This 14-acre garden is home to mature tropical trees and exotic plant varieties from the islands. Visitors can explore rare plant collections including a butterfly garden, conservatory, and an extensive orchid zone with flowering orchids. The garden is open every day except for Christmas and New Years, offering a serene escape from the city.
Years ago I cut through a botanical garden and was amazed at the flowers and plants. Not boring at all! Now I seek them out. Today I looked to see how far I could get on a biki bike and the last station is near Foster botanical garden in Honolulu. Best $5 admission I spent this trip. It’s hard to get it from the photos but the trees - oh the trees!! - absolutely incredible. I had no idea there were so many type of palm trees. The Baobab, cannonball, and candle trees…the pitcher plant and butterflies. Great for families. I spent 2 hours here taking my time. A must see! And as a Christian I have to say that this absolutely brought me closer to God in wonder.
Jeff S — Google review
For only $5 for an entry it is a great deal and a great time! Beautiful plants and trees and the LARGEST tree trunk I have ever seen from the baobab tree a great time. Also has the tallest palm tree in Hawaii in the center of it lots of birds and small creatures as well!
Robert B — Google review
Absolutely amazing park and Botanical Garden in Waikiki Oahu. So many orchids and tropical plants and trees including Banyan and Rainbow trees. Several different themed gardens focusing on plants native to the region. I spent about 2 hours exploring the area and it was not crowded.
J H — Google review
This is such an amazing garden with lots of exotic plants from all around the world. The staff are super friendly $5 for an adult and kids under 5 are free over 5 years old are just $1. Lots of parking and a pretty easy walk through with lots of seating for rests.

A lovely garden with beautiful trees and a cute little conservatory. I've never seen a corpse flower leaf, so it was nice treat to see two. It's a great place to rest away from the crowds and admire trees.
Stacy D — Google review
Beautiful botanical garden with a wonderful atmosphere! The gift shop has lovely items, and the staff were very friendly. We visited as a family in the morning hours and it wasn’t busy, which made the experience even more enjoyable 😊
Svetlana A — Google review
It’s got the oldest trees on the island. There’s a small greenhouse with some cool orchids, an outdoor butterfly area with plenty of milkweed, some mammoth baobab trees. It costs 5 bucks for visitors. It’s about a 10 minute walk from Chinatown. It felt more like a park.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Foster Botanical Garden in Honolulu, and it was an unforgettable experience! This hidden gem is a must-see for anyone who loves nature and tranquility. **Stunning Variety of Plants** The garden boasts an impressive collection of tropical plants, many of which are rare and exotic. Walking through the winding paths, I was captivated by the vibrant colors and diverse foliage. The collection of palms, orchids, and flowering trees was particularly stunning. **Peaceful Atmosphere** The serene ambiance of the garden made it the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The gentle sounds of birds and the rustling of leaves created a calming backdrop as I explored. There are plenty of benches and quiet spots to sit and soak in the beauty around you. **Informative Signage** Throughout the garden, informative signs provide details about the various plant species and their origins. This educational aspect added depth to my visit, allowing me to appreciate the botanical diversity even more. **Perfect for All** Whether you’re a plant enthusiast, a casual visitor, or looking for a peaceful place to relax, Foster Botanical Garden has something for everyone. I highly recommend taking a leisurely stroll through the garden, bringing a camera to capture the beauty, and perhaps even packing a picnic to enjoy on the lush grounds. Overall, my visit to Foster Botanical Garden was a highlight of my trip to Hawaii. It's a beautiful sanctuary that showcases the incredible biodiversity of the islands. I can’t wait to return on my next visit!

Koko Crater Botanical Garden is a unique 200-acre crater featuring a diverse collection of blooming plants, cacti, and foliage. Situated near the renowned Koko Crater hiking spot, the garden specializes in arid, dryland, and Mediterranean climate plants while also showcasing an international array of flora. The micro-climate within the crater creates a desert-like environment where visitors can observe native Hawaiian plants alongside exotic species from Africa, Madagascar, and beyond.
We got here late in the day so didn’t get to see it all, but loved everything that we got to! The plumeria groves were beautifully in bloom and right near the parking lot, so even people who weren’t up to a hike were able to check them out. The park signage said it was a 2 mile loop trail to see the full extent of the gardens, which includes native Hawaiian, African, American, and Pacific plants. The trail itself was rocky and a little uneven, so wear sneakers and plan for that. They had a few picnic tables in the plumeria grove, so even if you don’t want to go into the rest of the garden it’s a great place to sit and enjoy.

A Hidden Gem Inside a Volcanic Crater! We visited the Koko Crater Botanical Garden during our trip to Oahu, and it was one of the highlights of our vacation! The garden is uniquely located inside the crater of an ancient volcano, which makes for a truly special experience. The 2-mile loop trail takes about 1.5 hours to complete, and along the way, you’ll see a wide variety of rare and exotic plants from around the world. Highlights include: • Plumeria grove with a stunning range of colors and fragrances • Cactus and succulent collection with massive and unusual shapes • Unique trees from Africa, Madagascar, and Hawaii The garden is free to enter, but be prepared — there are minimal facilities (only a portable toilet and no drinking water), so bring water and wear sturdy shoes. It’s also best to arrive early since parking is limited. Highly recommended for nature lovers and anyone looking to explore a peaceful, lesser-known spot on Oahu!
Aleksandr D — Google review
I visited on August 5, 2025. This place features plants adapted to dry climates, and you really get the feeling of being inside a crater. You can see plumerias in various colors, so I think it’s worth visiting as a hiking spot. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle!
Takeyuki N — Google review
High desert area with a lovely plumeria grove, cacti and gardens from several areas were represented. Loop trail is unpaved, rocky and climbs uphill so please wear sturdy footwear and watch your step. Best time is early morning before the heat or late evening for sunset. Lot was almost empty when I went so plenty of parking just don’t leave valuables in your car since the area is a little secluded.
J H — Google review
This is a hidden gem! We were very impressed. So many beautiful plumeria groves and other plants that we did not expect to see from Hawaii and many other tropical places. These gardens are also very secluded with a small parking lot. We ran into less than 5 people while there. Highly recommend over other gardens on the island.
Emily D — Google review
After visiting Foster botanical garden this was a bit of a let down. There are some very interesting trees and the cactus garden is fantastic but lots of empty or dull segments for a non-botanist. The trail is rugged so if you trip easy or have poor balance bring hiking shoes and possibly poles. Bring water. It gets hot! It makes for a nice loop walk though, taking about 1.5 hours. We got our steps in!
Jeff S — Google review
This is a beautiful hike that isn't too challenging. It's 2 miles long and there are picnic tables along the trail. Gorgeous Plumeria flowers and all sorts of cacti. The trail is inside of Koko Head volcanic crater.
Alison J — Google review
Beautiful garden that has a wide variety of plants & trees from around the world. It took us about 1.5 hours to do the loop that included lots of stops to look at our map & identify plants. The brochure provided was informative & very helpful.

Wahiawā Botanical Garden, also known as the tropical jewel of Honolulu Botanical Gardens, is a hidden gem located in Wahiawa town. This 27-acre garden features a variety of native flora and offers docent-led tours for visitors to explore the lush tropical rainforest. The garden's cooler climate creates an ideal environment for tropical plants such as orchids, Heliconia, and ginger flowers to thrive.
This place has been on my list for years. Usually don't remember until I pass it on my way to something else and can't stop. So happy I finally made it! Wonderful, old, majestic trees, lush foliage, pretty flowers really made my day. It's free to go in. It's relatively small so easy to visit for an hour or so. Unfortunately, many paths were closed; not sure if there's any effort to reopen them. I hope they do. I recommend closed-toe shoes to navigate the more rugged trails down the hill from the main walking path. Those could be tricky if you're wearing sandals. If it's wet, the trails could get slippery, too. It was dry when we went. I can imagine if it were wet, with the vegetation, you might also need bug/ mosquito spray. Small parking lot, but if full, could park down along the street and walk to the entrance.
Judith B — Google review
This garden is a bit more “wild” than O’ahu’s other botanical gardens. It is really just the lower section of the gardens that is this way, though. When walking down to the lower portion of the garden, we encountered a number of different bird species. I did appreciate the more “wild” feeling I got walking along the initial portions of the lower level of the garden, but eventually, it got a lot more wild, and I got the impression that it wasn’t really maintained or gardened at all, for that matter. I felt that the hand-out map could have more landmarks with which to identify where you are in the garden. I think the lower portion may not be mapped out very accurately, or at least it does not include all the detour paths that leave the main trail of the lower portion of the gardens. A number of these detour paths, even those with concrete stairs part of them, seemed to go to nowhere interesting. There were also a number of (I think detour) paths that were blocked off, prohibiting visitors from using them. One such path I saw just had a few debris on it. An hour or two of work by an employee could clear this path. On more positive notes, the upper portion of the gardens seemed well maintained. Also, we didn’t have to pay any admission fee to enter this garden, so I cannot complain!
Brennan O — Google review
It was an adventure for sure and Gorgeous greenery and beautiful flowers we managed to spot at least two of the birds on the pamphlet from the front desk, but also some safety concerns as well. With such steep walkways, I would prefer the rails to have more bars; it seems so easy to trip and roll under the bars.
Herbal L — Google review
A dream place of wonder, a short but vigorous hike. Just be prepared for some mosquito and possibly some ants. The perfect picnic with a loved one spot!
Osirus R — Google review
Lovely gardens with paved paths, some optional paths with stairs. Restrooms were clean and supplied. Find the dragon and camel!
Chris M — Google review
Wahiawa Botanical Garden is a great place to take your family on a fun and free outing. It's a great place to enjoy the outdoors and get fresh air with young children. The trees provided a lot of shade, and there were nice breezes so it didn't feel too hot. It's really scenic so you can get some nice pictures in. There are cool plants and trees to see. There was a small parking lot in the front, and it was clean. There were also onsite bathrooms as well. I would recommend bringing bug spray, hats, and sunscreen as there are some areas that weren't so shady.
Nhu P — Google review
Amazing for free! Good little (1 hour or so) garden. Good paths in the main area but also long stairs and then a rocky gorge area that'll make you feel like you are in the jungle!

Waimea Valley, located on the North Shore of Oahu, is a vast parkland that offers a blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. This botanical garden spans nearly 2,000 acres and features a diverse collection of tropical plants from around the world. Visitors can explore traditional Hawaiian cultural practices and learn about Native Hawaiian history while strolling through the lush gardens. The valley is also home to a towering waterfall that cascades into a picturesque swimming hole.
A wonderful place to visit with family, friends or in a group. A lot of vegetation from all over the island. Rare birds and plants. Unfortunately the waterfall was bone dry due to lack of rain. Still nice to see the beauty what the place has to offer. Definitely a must go if you’re visiting Oahu.
Frederick C — Google review
It’s a nice place to visit. It’s all paved and the greenery is very nice. However, if you have to drive from Waikiki just to visit the valley it’s not worth the drive. Better if you combine it with other activities in the same area or maybe swim at the Waimea beach which is very nice. The swim at the falls is not always allowed. Better call ahead to verify.
Marleine E — Google review
Such an amazing place! Very fun to explore Please bring cash! There are many nice people along the trail that share with you their music or art. They are all amazing at what they do and are so talented. They only take tips in cash though.
Shani T — Google review
Lots of parking, and a well groomed path make this an easy hike. Be ready to pay admission, but the fee is deflected in the conditions of the park. The path and grounds are groomed nicely, plenty of bathrooms and trash bins make for a great experience. The falls are the star for sure, and changing rooms with life vests are great for swimmers. Recommended if you have time to make the stop!
Michael L — Google review
Beautiful botanical grounds, some cultural sites, an easy paved path to the waterfall, some optional side paths with stairs to see even more of the beautiful plants. Entry to the waterfall is large uneven rocks, I recommend wearing water shoes and not for anyone with mobility issues.
Kristy J — Google review
Opening hours are 9 am to 4 pm. Closed on mondays. Price is 25$ which is totally overpriced. It is a 3 km entirely paved walk. You can pay a shuttle 10$ one way. So if you have difficulty to walk you are paying 45$… Overwise it is a 30/45 mins walk. The park is beautiful to reach the cascade. I think you can call to check the recent rain fall as the cascade flows depends on it. Some people go and see very little waterfalls. There is an overcrowded swimming area. It is a very nice place but if you are a family of 4 it is a certain budget and becomes not worth it. If you have a limited budget this is not a must. If you don’t mind paying for an hour excursion then it is pleasant but not fantastic. You can buy the tickets at the door. There is a free parking
Carine — Google review
Loved walking through the botanical gardens and learning about Hawaiian culture. Such a beautiful place to spend a few hours. The waterfall is nice but lots of people.

Amazing walk through the botanical gardens and ended off with a a beautiful waterfall. Paths are easily walkable, came with my mother and younger child. We stopped in the huts and received a pin after answering some questions. Just a wonderful experience and would recommend it especially to a family. And buy the souvenir book, my daughter had fun checking off all the birds she saw, and used it throughout the rest of our trip.

Lyon Arboretum, nestled in the Manoa valley, is a 194-acre tropical rainforest showcasing over 5,000 exotic plants and singing birds. As part of the University of Hawai'i, it serves as a research facility and aims to preserve Hawaii's rare endemic species. The arboretum offers an extensive network of paths and trails totaling over seven miles for visitors to explore its lush surroundings. Founded in 1918 by Dr. Harold L.
as a landscape architect arboretum is my go to place. this is my first time visit, I was impressed and had such amazing experience to learned about native species of Hawaii and be able to encountered with some native parrots and cardinals. However, some plants are missing IDs, and some paths are missing trail directions which would be helpful for the visitors.
Jess H — Google review
Beautiful place with wonderful views, however if you come during raining season prepare to bring ponchos/rainjackets as it can get pretty rainy at times (more than I was expecting). Also put on bug spray (they sell at the gift shop if you don’t have), it is absolutely a necessity as I got bitten pretty badly on my legs. If you are sensitive to bites, I would also recommend long sleeved clothing. Personally will not be returning due to my sensitivity to bites but definitely worth checking out once for some great nature sights.
Pika F — Google review
An incredible experience! Stunning scenery complemented by a diverse array of indigenous plants. Truly nature at its finest! The staff were warm and welcoming, making the visit even more enjoyable. Highly recommend to anyone who appreciates the beauty of the natural world—definitely worth your time!
Rashmi K — Google review
If Waimea Valley feels like a well-curated garden of Hawaiian endemic plants, this place feels more like nature’s wild side—diverse, lush, and almost primitive. The trails are quieter, more private, and give you the sense that you’re walking closer to nature. Plus, catching glimpses of the mountain range from inside the valley was a nice surprise. But fair warning: the mosquitoes here are thriving! During our whole stay in Oahu, we barely saw any, but today they threw a party. I gave a donation at the visitor center, while my wife ended up giving a “blood donation” to the mosquitoes. 🦟😂
Dongjae K — Google review
This is the most beautiful park I’ve ever been to. If I lived closer and had the time I would go everyday. It is truly a gem. I couldn’t stop taking pictures of this place. There is a parking nearby and a hike to the falls. Originally, I went for the hike, but I preferred this botanical garden.
Austin — Google review
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to enjoy this garden very much. First, the signs throughout the park were very absent or hard to find. Based on the map, there should be a sign at every crossroad with the number and letter that matches the number and letter on the map, so that you know where you are at any given time. However, we barely found any signs at any of the intersections. So navigating through the park was very confusing. Second there were so many mosquitoes, so I would recommend using bug sprays before you enter.
Cindy L — Google review
Wow, tropical jungle and huge trees. Flowers galore with the scents to go with them. We went early but not early enough, was already filling up. Go super early!
William D — Google review
Love this place. The trails are beautiful and fun to explore. Bring bug spray, if you forget it, don't worry, there is a cute gift shop that has some available as well as fabulous gifts and things from local artisans. The parking lot is small so highly recommend making a reservation.

Nestled in the heart of Honolulu, Liliʻuokalani Botanical Garden spans 7.5 acres and is a serene sanctuary showcasing indigenous Hawaiian plants. Once Queen Liliuokalani's cherished picnic spot, this tranquil oasis boasts vibrant ohia lehua trees and small charming waterfalls. The garden is dedicated to preserving native flora, including white, yellow, and shell ginger plants that fill the air with refreshing scents in springtime.
This is 2 of the 5 Honolulu Botanical Gardens. It is free. However, this was more like a small park than a Botanical Garden. It had 3 small beautiful falls & was wheelchair friendly. We were the only ones at the park. The grass was great on your feet. This would be a nice place for a picnic of food brought from home because there are no bar-b-cue grills!

Garden is not well cared for and run down. Unfortunate because it could be a really nice place. Very free plants are tagged, many are dead or dying. Bathrooms in disrepair. It's quiet and not very many people there so can get away from the crowds at least.

This is a free public park. Very small. 2 picnic tables. No restrooms. Very very small about two blocks long. Clean. It had a walkway down to the lower portion of the ravine. A small natural waterfall in the middle.

This is an absolutely beautiful place to admire nature at its best. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and very kind. There are several waterfalls that are breathtaking.

It is a quiet and peaceful park. It is small but you can sit down and enjoy the sound of water. The park is free and have parking lot.
Lancy L — Google review
In the heart of the bustling city lies a serene garden adorned with a beautiful waterfall. Wheelchair-accessible sidewalks and a bridge enhance its accessibility. However, during our visit, the tranquility was marred by litter in the stream, and we encountered a homeless man utilizing the waterfall for washing his clothes, and taking shelter under the bridge. His behavior caused discomfort as he passed by with his hands in his pants rubbing himself- deterring us from using the available picnic tables and cut our visit short.
Ginger A — Google review
Complete disgraceful not only because of having no highlights as far as tropical botanical anything, but also totally beneath the condition it should have been. I walk by here almost daily and see many times people encroaching after hours and late nights through the garden, homeless and drug abuse very common here, wouldn't recommend to visit at any time.
HosFar F — Google review
A small and quiet place to take a short walk in the middle of town. Small parking lot and restroom are available. Serene stream, huge trees and rocks are part of the landscapes. No charge.

O‘ahu, the third-largest island in Hawaii, is a vibrant destination brimming with vacation amenities and rich history. As the home of Honolulu and the iconic Pearl Harbor, it offers visitors a unique blend of culture and natural beauty. The windward side boasts lush vegetation due to its wetter climate, making it a picturesque area to explore. A drive from Waikiki to Kailua along the coastal highway reveals stunning sights that are not to be missed.
Overall a great island. This is the most balanced one out of all of the islands. It has the city for urban adventures and tons of hiking trails and beaches for nature lovers too. With the giant attractions like Pearl Harbor and the Dole Plantation, you can easily spend 5 days here and not be close to exploring the entire island. Fights here are the cheapest too because of the big airport. Lots of hotels and restaurants. If you come to Oahu, don’t forget to try surfing or snorkeling. Overall just a great place for vacation.

Visited in late June. Beautiful from the beaches to the mountains. Water was wonderful wherever we went (mostly windward coast). We rented a car and parking was a challenge at times but if you were patient it worked out. So many beautiful beaches and hikes. I would definitely recommend getting away from the tourist traps in the Waikiki area and exploring more of the island.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 – A True Paradise in the Pacific – Oahu, Hawaii Visiting Oahu was a breathtaking experience that truly captured the spirit of "Aloha." This island perfectly blends natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and modern comforts. Whether you're an adventure seeker, beach lover, foodie, or history enthusiast, Oahu has something unforgettable to offer. 🏖️ Beaches: The beaches are absolutely world-class — from the calm turquoise waters of Lanikai Beach and family-friendly Kailua, to the vibrant waves of Waikiki and the massive surf breaks at the North Shore. Sunset Beach and Waimea Bay during winter are a must-see for surf lovers! 🏞️ Nature & Views: Hiking Diamond Head Crater offers stunning views of Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean. If you're into lush tropical landscapes, the Manoa Falls Trail and the Pali Lookout provide amazing scenery. Don’t miss the drive along the Windward Coast — it’s like something out of a movie. 🏯 Culture & History: Pearl Harbor is a deeply moving experience that gives insight into a pivotal moment in world history. Iolani Palace and the Bishop Museum provide a deeper understanding of Hawaiian royalty and native culture. 🍽️ Food: Oahu is a foodie's paradise. From local plate lunches and poke bowls to food trucks on the North Shore (like Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck), everything is fresh and full of flavor. Don’t leave without trying malasadas from Leonard’s Bakery and shaved ice from Matsumoto’s. 🛍️ Shopping & Nightlife: Honolulu offers great shopping — Ala Moana Center is huge — and a lively nightlife scene. Waikiki is full of energy, live music, and beachfront bars, but still feels safe and welcoming. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family & Safety: Very family-friendly with plenty of public facilities, clean beaches, and helpful locals. The island feels safe even in the busy areas. 🚗 Getting Around: Public transport (TheBus) is reliable, but renting a car gives you the freedom to explore more remote areas. Traffic in Honolulu can get busy during peak hours, but nothing unmanageable. 🌅 Final Thoughts: Oahu is more than just a vacation spot — it’s an experience that stays in your heart. The warm people, the diverse landscapes, and the deep cultural roots make it an island unlike any other. Would I return? Absolutely — in a heartbeat. #Oahu #HawaiiTravel #AlohaSpirit #ParadiseOnEarth #TravelReview

Tons of things to do on this relatively small island; there’s a wide diversity activity for many different interests. It’s expensive, but you will get some amazing scenery!

From above, it looks like a lost world — but this green crater carved into the cliffs is very real. Welcome to Diamond Head, or Lēʻahi, the giant 500,000-year-old tuff cone standing tall in Oʻahu like a scar from Earth's fiery past. 🌋 One eruption. One crater. A half-million years of silence... and now? It’s a place where tourists hike, history lives, and the view is out of this world. Nature doesn’t just create — sometimes it engraves a memory right into the planet.

There's a good reason why Hawaii and specifically Oahu is the most vacationed to location in the world. The weather's always perfect beaches are perfect, foods amazing, and wait till you get out of Waikiki the island is truly beautiful from every angle. Just respect the locals and they'll respect you back. Time to get your vacation on, Mahalo for reading.
Yassine H — Google review
This is the island I live on. It has the capital Honolulu. Waikiki Beach downtown is the place to party and enjoy nightlife. The west side (not counting the Disney resort area) tends to be a bit slummy but the beaches are less crowded. The resorts over there are extremely nice but they are separated from the island and it feels fake like Disneyland. The north Shore is pretty chill but it can also be a bit of a tourist trap. That's where I would go if I was a surfer and wanted to mix touristy with watersports. The east side is my favorite part. It is way green compared to the other parts of the island and the beaches are great! After the beach you can pop into the smaller towns and eat good food in a more relaxed yet nice area. You can typically get anywhere on the island in 1 or 2 hours traffic depending. Around Honolulu and the rim loop traffic can get atrocious!!! Be mindful of City traffic in town and tourists that are looking at the GPS instead of the road in the north shore area for example. And be prepared to pay for everything AND TIP! This is one of the most expensive places in the US. I don't care what a gallon of milk costs in Nebraska Everything costs more here! Enjoy your stay but know that people live here too.

Moanalua Gardens, located just a few miles northwest of Honolulu, is a 24-acre park with a rich historical background dating back to the Hawaiian monarchy. The site features the Kamehameha V Cottage and is known for its stunning Monkeypod trees, including the famous Hitachi Tree that has been an iconic symbol since 1975. The annual Prince Lot Hula Festival takes place here, adding to the cultural significance of the gardens.
The trees are spectacular, we just walked around for 30 mins or so, and fed the ducks and the koi with food we purchased at the entrance. The public bathrooms are nice. The ducks and the fish were a highlight. There are picnic tables. The admission is for the whole day so you could leave and go get food and come back later to picnic. Has a famous Hitachi tree.

Garden? I would characterize this as a park with some very beautiful large trees and plenty of mango 🥭 trees among them. Although some call this botanical but it is far from it for one, the former royalty 👑 guest house 🏠 or retreat isn't accessible to the public for years as we were told. Just one restroom 🚻 by the main entrance and for our surprise, the restrooms are very clean and neat. Overall a little disappointed not have anything discovered except trees, the freeway right next to this park didn't help with the constant noise. The admission even for locals isn't justified whatsoever, out of state visitors find out the hard way.
HosFar F — Google review
I never realized how beautiful the Hitachi trees were until I visited this garden. This is also where I learned the meaning of the company name Hitachi. I totally can see why someone would name a business after this tree. I wish I had a backyard large enough to grow Hitachi trees 🌳

The Koʻolau Range is a unique fluted ridge formed from the remains of a partial volcano, offering popular hiking trails and breathtaking views. The range is home to diverse flora and botanical gardens, celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2022. Situated on Oahu's Windward Coast, the range's verdant curtain of green is a result of eons of wind and rain erosion. It offers a stunning landscape with waterfalls, rivers, mountains, and valleys.
Absolutely stunning. A piece of work. Nothing compares to the Ko'olaus. God really popped off with this one.

Majestic, ascending skyward like a verdant curtain of green on Oahu's Windward Coast. It's a breathtaking result of eons of wind and rain erosion. The combination of these forces of nature carved the signature fluted cliff face of the Koolau's windward side.

Do not come to this location to look for hiking trails or waterfalls. The description is wrong. There are no hiking trails or waterfalls at the end on this road. In fact, it doesn’t have public access to the Koolau Range... it’s all private property and you may get arrested for trespassing. The Island of Oahu has 2 mountain ranges, the Waianae and Koolau mountain range. If you are looking for hiking trails and waterfalls I suggest looking up specific trails and waterfalls.

Hanauma Bay is a popular nature preserve and marine life conservation district on Oahu. It offers a beautiful beach, opportunities to see green sea turtles and parrotfish, and excellent snorkeling. To avoid crowds and enjoy clear waters, consider arriving before 7am when entry may be free. The bay was previously harmed by human development but has been restored under new conservation procedures.
Beautiful beach with plenty of reef. Got snorkeling gear and was able to see so many varieties of fish even on a very windy day. Felt like we had a better snorkeling experience on left side of the beach. There’s a store where you can rent all the snorkeling equipment you need. Reservations highly recommended.

Beautiful nature preservation on Oahu. Amazing location for snorkeling! Extremely busy so you have book your registration spots online 2 days in advance or visit in person before 7am the day of just to have a chance at getting in! The earlier you get in, the longer you can stay as they close at 3pm. A must visit if you can get in!

This was my first time snorkeling! Perfect place for it! You can rent or bring your own. There is so much to see undewater! The fish are unbelievable and not at all scared of you, but you have to be careful of where you step. Also, if you're coming to Hawaii for a short time & want yo bisit Maunalua Bay, make sure you visit the website at least 48 hours prior to book a reservation because it goes fast!! However it's absolutely worth seeing and the beach is gorgeous!!

Pay USD25 for tickets to get in. We went with a 'tour' for around USD50 per pax, which included hotel pickup and snorkeling equipment included, and I also added USD10 for a life vest. We arrived the earliest at 6.45 am when the park opens, but the waters were sadly too cold and we decided to enjoy by relaxing on the beach instead. The tour ends at 11:00 More visitors came at around 10:30 when the sun was stronger and a little bit more pleasant. Recommend to come on your own (totally doable) and especially if your hotel already provides snorkelling gear and beach hotels etc for free (as ours did), so you can pick the best time and leave as you wish.

Good and safe place for snorkeling. Reservations are in place, book early and on time. There is parking fee as well. Saw beautiful fishes but not much as in Shark’s cove. There is a shop to rent out snorkel gears, price ranges from 10-20$. The depth increases as you go away from the beach so it is not random.
Shashank P — Google review
The view was breathtaking. Disappointed by the amount of fish we see while snorkeling, the best place to snorkel is in Sharks Cove. You have to book to get in at 7am 2 days ahead, parking is a bit of a nightmare. The clear water makes up for it. We went in the afternoon just hours before the beach closes and it was very crowded. We managed to take a few pictures of the water without people in it and it’s just heaven on earth.
Portia K — Google review
Bought tickets to snorkel here and had a blast. They brief you on what you can and can't do before you head down so just follow the rules. You can rent gear and equipment if you want. I would highly suggest getting snorkeling gear there is so much to see in the coral reef.

We booked an early spot which I recommend as you can get parking and it’s not too hot - there is limited shade at the beach This was a great snorkeling experience - we were in the water over an hour and were able to rinse off with the showers before leaving Could have better snack options - perhaps close to the beach

Dole Plantation, located about 10 miles inland from the North Shore and 20 miles northwest of Honolulu, is a historic pineapple plantation that offers a variety of activities and tours for families. Visitors can enjoy a narrated train ride on the Pineapple Express Train, explore the Plantation Garden, navigate through the Pineapple Maze Garden, learn about cutting pineapples, watch chocolate-making demonstrations, and feed fish in the pond.
Go inside and get yourself some Dole!!! It is a popular tourist area, and we went on a weekday. The drive to the Dole Plantation is so beautiful!! And arriving to this location makes it worth it! We got the Dole Whip cup with pineapples and it tasted to satisfying, especially in the hot humid weather. And the pineapples were a reward with every bit. Put this on your bucket list!!

The gift shop is incredible and probably the best part about the plantation. Parking can be difficult so pack extra patience. The line to get into the store is zero, but there's a line to buy tickets (about 10 mins). The Cafe has long lines while we were there, but moved quick. We purchased tickets for the train ride and garden. The garden is absolutely beautiful, but small for what you have to pay to see. The 20 min train ride through the plantation was the biggest tourist trap and time waster ever. We stood in line for an hour and a half for a narrated tour past dilapidated farm equipment that probably hasn't ran in this century. There's a few other marked spots of interest during the 2 mile trek. The best thing I can say about this tour was it qas very relaxing as I actually nodded off during a small section of the ride and narration. Save your money and just spend it on Dole Whip and and gifts. You'll see more pineapples from the road as you drive in and save at least $18pp

The Dole Plantation is an absolute must-visit while on Oahu! From the moment you arrive, you’re greeted with vibrant scenery, friendly staff, and the sweet aroma of fresh pineapples. It’s the perfect mix of fun, education, and relaxation for visitors of all ages. The Pineapple Express Train Tour is a highlight — a scenic and informative ride through the plantation that shares the history of Dole and Hawaii’s pineapple legacy. The Garden Maze is another great experience — fun for families, couples, or anyone looking for a little adventure. And of course, you can’t leave without trying the world-famous Dole Whip — it’s as refreshing as it gets! The gift shop is also full of unique local treats and souvenirs that make great take-home memories. Everything here feels laid-back and welcoming, surrounded by lush tropical beauty and a touch of Hawaiian charm. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick treat or spending a few hours exploring, the Dole Plantation delivers a truly memorable island experience. Our group of seven visited the Dole Plantation on a Monday morning shortly after opening, and it was perfect timing we walked right onto the train ride with no wait! The ride itself was fun, relaxing, and a great way to learn a little more about the plantation. The gift shop was a highlight for us. The self-checkout made everything super easy, and the entire Hello Kitty section was adorable. There was a really good selection of souvenirs, snacks, and gifts to bring home. We didn’t do the other activities this time, but we definitely made up for it with plenty of Dole Whip our absolute favorite. It was delicious, refreshing, and honestly worth the stop all on its own. Overall, a fun, smooth, and sweet experience. Highly recommend visiting, especially early in the day!

The informational displays and presentations are interesting and easy to follow. The plantation country store is also worth a visit, with a wide variety of gifts, local treats, foods, and refreshments, including the world-famous Dole Soft Serve. A wonderful place to spend a day!

It was worth the smoothie alone! I actually loved the train ride and learning about how Dole expanded their business in hawaii. It was a fun family visit and there is so much to do and it's a quick little stop full of history and delicious treats and treats for mommy's too like pretty pearls.

We had a great time doing the maze, which is the Guinness book of world records largest maze in 2008. The train was also interesting to see the different fields. The shop is very crowded and has kind of weird stands (clam/pearl gimmick) inside. Jewelry stand on the porch. It makes for a hard shopping experience and to get to the food or Dole souvenirs. Dole whip (ice cream) is a must and their pineapple is of course delicious, which you can top the whip with.

It's a hotspot for aquatic activities such as kitesurfing, windsurfing, swimming, and kayaking. The calm waters are ideal for various water sports year-round.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely stunning beach! Soft white sand, clear turquoise water, and breathtaking mountain views. Perfect for swimming, walking, or just relaxing under the sun. Family-friendly with calm waves and plenty of space. One of the best beaches in Hawaii!

We visited Kailua Beach Park on a Wednesday afternoon. Even though it wasn’t a weekend or holiday, both parking lots were completely full. After driving around for a bit, we luckily found a spot near Buzz’s Original Steak House across the street. Parking here is definitely more challenging than some reviews suggest. The beach itself is gorgeous — super soft white sand and clear blue water. We even spotted a sea turtle! Honestly, while it’s beautiful, it didn’t completely blow me away compared to some other beaches in Oahu. The shallow bay and protection of Popoia Island provide calm waters, great if you have small children not used to the surfing waves of most beaches. Watching people kayaking and sailing turned out to be part of the fun. With the picnic grounds, public restrooms and showers the park is great for a full day outing. One of my favorite parts was the small stretch of rocky shoreline at the southeastern end of the beach, near the Lanikai Monument. It’s peaceful, picturesque, and perfect for photos. From there, you can enjoy sweeping views of Kailua Beach, the nearby Lanikai Beach, and the beautiful offshore islands, Moku Nui and Moku Iki.

absolutely breathtaking — one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever visited. The sand is soft and powdery, the water is a stunning turquoise, and the waves are gentle enough for swimming, kayaking, or just floating around. It feels less crowded and more relaxed compared to Waikīkī, making it perfect for families, couples, or anyone who just wants to enjoy Hawaii’s natural beauty in peace. The park itself is well-kept with plenty of space, shaded picnic areas, and facilities that make it easy to spend the whole day here. Kayaking out to the Mokulua Islands is a must if you’re up for an adventure, and the views from the shore are just as incredible. Highly recommend making this a stop on your Oahu trip!

We enjoyed this park, we visited some other attractions in the area and it was a great place to spend the afternoon. Not a lot of natural shade but there are some trees down the beach. Sand is very soft, Caribbean type, great for walking around the bay, however, when the wind was picking up, the sand was all over the place. Great place for families with kids or older people, waves were fun without being dangerous. Facilities are outdated but working. We didn't see any lifesaving staff around. Close to restaurants and convenience stores.

🌊 5 stars – Absolutely Stunning Beach! This beach is an absolute paradise! The water is a breathtaking shade of turquoise — so clear and inviting. The soft white sand and gentle waves make it perfect for swimming and relaxing Free parking. Restrooms and outdoor showers are conveniently located just steps from the beach, which is a big help if you’re spending the whole day there. Another bonus — Buzz’s Steak House is right nearby! It’s the perfect spot to grab a delicious meal after a day in the sun. Whether you’re a local or visiting, this beach is a must-see. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Great place to swim, walk the beach and enjoy the scenery. It is easy to find parking b/c there are so many parts to park at. Bathrooms and showers available. The pavilions are great for hosting parties.
Erica K — Google review
Wonderful soft sand feels great under your feet. The beach isn't very deep and is beginning to erode and expose the roots around the trees that outline the shoreline. When you wait into the water it drops off fairly quickly but then it's only up to your waist. There's not a lot here for waves as it is pretty well protected by the reef outside. Plenty of kite sailors here. It's fun watching their multicolored sails. Depending upon what time you get there will determine how much parking there is. Sometimes it's a little tough to find.

Absolutely STUNNING location. The temple is situated directly in front of a huge mountain that just really gives it a beautiful presence. The grounds are really lovely and it wasn't overly crowded. Unlike some videos I had seen, parking was very close by. You can buy fish food to feed the fish and they really love that, jumping out of the water for it lol. They also have pure juices for sale. Please keep in mind to remove your shoes before walking up the steps to the temple. The scents wafting out from the temple are beautiful and they have a lantern and incense sticks so that you may light your own, say your prayers, and place it with the rest. Very beautiful experience.

This was a great place to visit! You can purchase food to feed the koi fish, take shoes off to pray in the temple, have some shaved ice, shop at gift store, and walk the grounds! Make sure you take coins to throw into lucky pot at small waterfall. If you put the fish food in hand and extend arm the birds will land and eat. Great photo! Parking can be challenging with construction going on at the main parking lot. We parked along the road. We also got there early.

Great place to visit. It’s a replica of the temple is Japan. The staff are relaxed and friendly. The birds and fishes are friendly. You can buy food from the gift shop to feed the birds or fishes. Many good spots to check out and to take photos. The temple is located in a cemetery so you can also check out many of the grave sites too.

A serene temple set in a lush valley, offering peaceful views and a unique atmosphere. Visitors can feed the koi fish and birds, wander the quiet gardens, and enjoy a calming break from Oahu’s busy spots. A truly memorable stop. Worth the trip. Nice! 7$ pay on gate.

Beautiful Temple! It's $7 per person for admission, not bad, but it's a short trip.. maybe spending anywhere from 5-20 mins. The garden is nice, the pond with koi fish are serene. Ringing the gong bell was fun. Going into the temple to see the Buddha statue, you have to take off your shoes, which is totally fine, but it's a small area. Small benches to sit. Not too meditative bc it's overcrowded with tourists. More of an in and out quick stop. To get there you drive past a mortuary so don't walk on the grass!
Sandy K — Google review
I've been a few times and it's been fun. Great for families and young kids because there are fish and birds to feed, but this last time it just felt like nothing special. It's set in this beautiful backdrop. I would say come if it's your first time, but skip of you've been before.

This gem of a place is so serene. It’s beautiful and worth the $7 entrance fee. Parking is a bit of a beast. The tiny parking lot is under construction so parking is uphill and looping around. Be respectful and follow the road. It is a cemetery after all.

This is a beautiful stop on Oʻahu. It is a smaller-scale, stunning replica of a 950-year-old Japanese temple, situated in the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park. The scenery around it is amazing. The temple is perfectly situated against the Koʻolau Mountains and surrounded many trees. There is a beautiful pond where you can see a lot of vibrant koi fish. Inside the temple, you’ll find a huge, impressive Buddha statue. There is also a big gong at the entrance which everyone can sound when arriving, so that was very fun to do. Regarding fees, you pay USD 7 per person to enter.

Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout is a historic site in Oahu, Hawaii that holds great significance as the location of a major battle in 1795. Situated between the town side and the Windward side, it offers breathtaking views of the island's eastern coast, with towering Koolau Mountains and lush green valleys. The lookout provides a glimpse into the past as visitors can appreciate the engineering marvel of the highway that traverses through rugged mountains.
My uncle took us to this place for some amazing views. The way the wind whips up here is pretty amazing. Definitely worth the visit and off the beaten path. It’s an easy experience for all ages and abilities.

This lookout point is a must-see and completely worth the stop. The view from the top is genuinely great. You get a massive, sweeping panoramic that captures everything: the sheer Koʻolau Mountains, the valley, the city of Honolulu in the distance, and the ocean. You can practically see everything from there. If you are driving the Pali Highway, definitely stop by.
Bruno D — Google review
Opening hours are 6 am to 6 pm. You must pay 7$ parking per car even if you stay 5 mins. The lady is there to place a fine as soon as you arrive if you don’t take the ticket. It is a great view so it is worth it

I love coming to this spot when I had some extra time to spend while waiting for a flight out or on a day when sightseeing is the plan. The views of the valley and ocean are spectacular, and the view up to the surrounding mountains and the passing clouds is magical. The parking can seem a bit expensive, there is a machine to pay as well as the pay to park app, so at least it is easy.
Don D — Google review
The pivitol Battle of Nu'uanu took place here in 1795 where the forces of King Kamehameha pushed Oahu warriors off the sheer cliff to their deaths, winning his battle to unify the Hawaiian Islands. A construction crew recently found hundreds of skulls at the base of the cliff. It is great to reflect on the battle while visiting here but be prepared for unbelievable winds. The views are spectacular!

This was not expected. This was a gorgeous and unexpected visit. We saw the signs and took a chance. It is a free park. We were actually heading somewhere else to visit. This was like being caught in hurrican winds safely. The view was gorgeous. The experience of the winds won the show. Learned a fantastic history lesson as well. There was a monument to the female warriors. Fantastic!
Melissa W — Google review
The scene is very beautiful. However the flat rate parking fee $7 is insane because the lookout will take only 10 min maximum to view the scene and there is no trail open for hiking. It is not worthy to pay for $7 flat rate parking at the parking lot. And there is a guy sitting in his car that looks like he is monitoring who is not paying the park at the parking lot.

During Hawaii trip back in 2021 The view is incredible from here. It's a short walk. It can be very windy so hold onto your hats! Parking is $7. You can purchase a ticket at the kiosk. You need to put on your license plate number to get the ticket that you place in your windshield. Lots of feral chickens around, as usual. It's a nice place to stop. Beautiful scenery and scenic drive in and out from the state park.

The center is home to Kukaoo Heiau, an ancient temple linked to the Menehune, as well as a diverse array of native Hawaiian plants and Polynesian-introduced gardens.
Stunning! The views and everything was beautiful and mesmerizing. Couldn't get enough of the beauty here, just wow! You can drive through the botanical free of charge. Just remember to respect the rules and beauty of the land. If you're not a local, it's best to rent a rental for the day instead of paying an uber, this way, you can also visit the near by beaches and drive the island.

A Hidden Treasure in Mānoa! My tour at the Mānoa Heritage Center was absolutely amazing! The grounds are stunning—filled with native Hawaiian plants like the beautiful ʻōhiʻa lehua, which I especially appreciated as someone who practices lei making. Walking through the gardens felt deeply inspiring, like reconnecting with the roots of our island traditions. The history of the property was fascinating. Seeing old photos of Mānoa and hearing how the land was transformed gave me such a deep appreciation for this place and the people who care for it. As a special treat, we were offered fresh-picked ʻulu, juicy mountain apple, and a refreshing cool cup of tea at the end. The groundskeeper was so warm, welcoming, and knowledgeable—it truly felt like visiting extended ʻohana. If you're looking for something meaningful, peaceful, and rich with Hawaiian culture, this tour is an absolute must. I’ll carry the mana of this experience with me in every lei I make.

Kualoa Ranch, a 4,000-acre nature retreat in Hawaii, offers a wide range of activities such as ATVs, zip-lining, and beach tours. Despite its name, the ranch was once sacred land exclusively accessible to the royal family. It has served as the backdrop for numerous films including Jurassic World and Godzilla. The ranch features a zip line course that allows visitors to soar above landscapes seen in famous movies.
Such an amazing place — a must-visit when you come to Hawaii! I highly recommend trying the UTV tour. Next time, I really want to go horseback riding. After seeing so many horses in person, I really wanted to ride, but it was fully booked. You definitely need to book this place in advance. The scenery is stunning — it feels like dinosaurs could appear at any moment, with beautiful mountains and ocean views. The UTV guides were so fun and friendly!
Jinny ( — Google review
First off, buy your tickets in advance... as far in advance as possible. The ranch is beautiful and has plenty to do. I signed up for the half day visit and it was definitely worth the visit. I will say that the lunch was not exceptionally great, but it was not bad either. (Be sure not to leave food unattended or feathered friends will take it.) The ranch cinema tour was fun but the chances to explore are very limited. Be aware that the Jurassic tour is not the same tour, so you may want to consider that when booking. (It would be nice if you could could substitute the Jurassic tour for the ocean voyage.) The tour guides were great! A special shout out to the lady who got us ready to get on the bus. She was especially friendly and really went over the top with her interactions. (I didnt catch her name) It may not be all that exciting for kids as they are not going to probably enjoy it at the same level as adults but that is not to say it is not a family event. (The kids on our tour seemed to genuinely enjoy it, they just didnt get the magnitude of what they were seeing.) In short, this is a must do if visiting the island!

We dont have experience trying other tours but based on reviews, the half day package is definitely worth it. The free buffet lunch was pretty delicious and the movie site tour was the best thing we did. The ocean voyage at the beginning wasn't amazing but still cool and worth it to get the free lunch. The views are spectacular of course and learning about the ranch and all that it does was very cool. I feel bad for those who dont get Elsie as their tour guide, she was amazing.

Bring you camera becaus the view is amazing! We did the 2 hour UTV Tour then the Movie sites and Ranch Tour. We learned so much about the Kualoa Ranch thanks to our knowledgeable guides Amber and Cody. They made it fun and memorable experience for us. They also assist us in taking great pictures. We wanted to try the Secret Island Tour and the zip lining next time. There was not enough time to do anything after the 2 tours we signed up for the day. So choose well on what works for you and the time you have. Amazing experience.

We did the Jurassic Tour back in July including pick up and drop off - and it was amazing. The ranch and land they have is beautiful and so much history included. The bus driver was so kind, he told us about his background and about the island / points of interest as we drove past them. The day was just amazing - would recommend to everyone. I recommended to our family that arrived a day later and they actually went a couple days later and did an ATV tour that they also loved. Something for everyone to see on this property.

On Friday, 14 November 2025, my partner and I visited Kualoa Ranch with hotel pickup from Waikiki, about an hour away. Our package included the Ocean Voyage and the Movie Sites Tour. The Ocean Voyage was enjoyable but fairly basic—about 30 minutes on a catamaran looking for turtles, followed by a short tour of a historic fishpond and some movie history. The included buffet lunch was plentiful with good variety. The Movie Sites Tour, however, was outstanding. Highlights included Battery Cooper, a WWII bunker carved into the mountain with historical displays and props from films shot on the ranch. The tour travelled through multiple filming locations for Jurassic Park, Lost, and many others. Our guide was exceptional, sharing impressive knowledge of both the movie history and the cultural history of the area. Horseback and ATV tours were unfortunately fully booked on the day. Highly recommend the Movie Sites Tour—an excellent experience.

We did a tour so were picked up by bus at 7.15a. Our tour wasn't till 9.45a so sat around waiting. The 90 minute tour we did was the movie tour. Being an Aussie and living in the tropics we get when it rains! However one would think the transport would be adequately equipped to also keep you dry when this occurs. Nope, no windows and no plastic cover over the trucks to at least keep you somewhat dry. They run to schedule and the driver is nice and dry however the paying passengers are drenched. I picked this tour due to the amazing views described and seen in pictures so really wanted to see a little mountain and ocean combined. I know the ranch can not control the weather however they can control how wet one gets. Disappointed after paying $145aus dollars we really didn't see the views. I would still recommend doing this tour however don't do it when raining especially in a downpour. There was a lot of sitting around waiting which is a problem if you don't have your own vehicle. Take a poncho or purchase out there for $2.

Would not drive far to see this but if combined with other activities nearby and its open. Then nice, little stop. We were done in 20 minutes and enjoyed it. Restrooms and small parking lot.

I discovered this place through someone on Facebook who mentioned a monthly seed giveaway located in Halawa. I worked in Halawa and ended up going there a few times on my lunch break to relax and enjoy nature and to get seeds. The staff was really friendly and informed me of workshops that happen at this site. I was able to attend a composting workshop where there was a lot of useful information and demonstrations. I still refer to the handouts I was given that day. I happened across one of the unlucky master gardeners whom I was able to bombard with questions as I have a new interest in gardening and she was very nice and patient with me. Lucky for her my husband eventually was able to pry me away. I only gave this 4 stars because I would have liked to see more name labels and possibly small facts by the lovely trees, cacti, ect. I often found myself asking what's that? With at least name tags I'd be able to google additional information if I had more questions. It does also have an unfinished feel to it, but only because I think it is maintained solely by volunteers. I hope to find time to volunteer there. It's a bit hard though with them being open only 2 days a week. And I couldn't attend the annual plant sale.☹ wish they'd happen more than once a year.

Found this place after seeing an online post about free seedlings, will have to come back for the interesting gardening workshops! Located in an industrial zone, you’ll find the garden at the end of a dead end street. There will be two small buildings to your left as you head down to the parking lot; once you’ve parked, you’ll want to check in at the building closer to the street. There, the friendly Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden will give you the seedling along with a packet of info about caring for the plant, the garden, workshops and more. After that you’re free to roam the garden across the street from the buildings!

There are toilets, showers and a dishwashing sink. Each site also has 2 picnic benches and a fire pit. From 4 p.m. there are only campers in the park and you can walk through the park without car traffic. Unfortunately, at night you can hear the street but also many birds. Please note that after a trip outside the park you must be back before 6:30 p.m. as the barrier at the park entrance will then be locked. We had great days here. The staff was super nice and helped us with any questions (Original) Toller Campingplatz, allerdings würde ich nicht noch mal Platz Nr. 8 nehmen. Iolani Palace, located in Honolulu, is a historic 19th-century royal residence that once housed Hawaii's last monarchs. It has been restored and transformed into a museum offering tours and exhibits for visitors to explore the rich history of the Hawaiian monarchy. The palace was home to Queen Liliuokalani and King Kalakaua from 1882 to 1893 until the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy.
Iolani Palace is a beautiful and special place to visit in Honolulu. It’s full of history and has a peaceful atmosphere. I didn’t know much about Hawaiian royalty before, but the tour taught me a lot. It’s the only royal palace in the United States, which makes it quite unique. The building is stunning, both outside and inside. The rooms are well kept, and you can see where the kings and queens of Hawaii once lived. Everything is very elegant. From the wooden staircase to the royal dining room. You can really feel the history when you walk through the palace. I took the audio tour, which was very helpful and easy to follow. It made the experience more meaningful and helped me understand Hawaiian culture better. The staff were also friendly and helpful. They gave clear directions and made sure everything ran smoothly.
Jakarin H — Google review
Nice to learn about the history of Hawaii and loyal family. This palace was not an actual palace that king lived in it was just one of the places he stayed when he had a guess. Sadly, the basement was closed for maintenance, so I only went two floors of the palace. No taking video inside only noncommercial camera without flash. They have self-audio tour so you can choose which room you want to go, and most people just follow the room number. Overall is not bad and kids will like it but I just feel it is kind of small compared to the ticket price.

Great cultural experience of the history of Hawaii from King Kamehameha on. The palace is extremely impressive with the portraits and technology that was ahead of its time. This is a definite must see to truly understand and embrace the true Hawaii!

This is a must-visit location for anyone interested in learning more about the past. Every corner is rich with historical significance, and the exhibits are thoughtfully curated to offer both educational value and engaging stories. Whether you’re a history buff or just curious, there’s so much to take in and appreciate. The staff is knowledgeable, and the atmosphere really brings the stories to life. Highly recommended for families, students, or anyone looking to connect with history in a meaningful way.

An icon of Hawaiian history and heritage. The guided audio tour was very well organized without being overwhelming. The information presented in the audio narration was concise without missing important details - there were many excerpts included from letters and diaries of the Hawaiian royals and their associates which added great atmosphere to the overall experience. The palace itself is beautiful and very well maintained. There are many spots on the palace lawns to sit and relax and take in the surroundings. There's also a massive Banyan tree behind the palace, not sure how old, but nonetheless magnificent to behold. Highly recommend visiting the Iolani Palace if you can.
Arunabha M — Google review
If you're a history nerd and hate the whitewashing of Hawaiian history, definitely visit the Iolani Palace. We did the audio tour which I made me wish we did the docent tour just so I could ask questions. The palace is stunning, and they did an amazing job restoring it and continuing to maintain it. They do provide wheelchairs which my partner and I needed due to different foot injuries, but it's very difficult to navigate as the door frames are very small and some rooms you'll need to go a different route to enter.

I enjoyed this visit. It was pretty well kept and the audio guides were very helpful. We could also bring our baby in a stroller with no issues - there is an elevator inside. The workers were also very friendly and help us navigate the building. Mahalo!

Lanikai Beach, which translates to "heavenly sea" in Hawaiian, is a stunning 1/2 mile stretch of pristine white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters located on the windward side of Oahu. It is consistently ranked among the best beaches in the world and offers breathtaking views of the Na Mokulua islands. Accessible only by public beach access paths, this residential area beach lacks lifeguards, restrooms, showers, and a public parking lot.
Just never gets old to visit!!! One of the more beautiful beaches to visit and spend some time. Go with patience, as the parking situation is tricky. There is no shade at the beach, and no bathrooms, you are in a neighborhood. But the reward is serenity.

The Honolulu Zoo is a 42-acre family-friendly attraction located at the end of Waikiki, towards Diamond Head. It's the only zoo in the US to have originated from a king's grant by King Kalakaua. With over 900 animals, including elephants, orangutans, and komodo dragons, it offers a diverse range of wildlife. The zoo also hosts events and educational programs for visitors to enjoy.
I haven't been to a zoo in eons. This zoo has great exhibits with big animals like tigers, elephants, giraffes, a warthog, gibbons monkeys, huge tortoise and hippos! Very impressed with the reptile and bird exhibits! Wow, very cool. Plenty of shady spots to sit and rest. To the right of the entrance/gift shop and across from flamingos there's a purified refillable water fountain and bathroom. Several clean bathrooms scattered throughout the zoo. Gorgeous trees and 🌺 flowers. The parking lot has kiosks for paying - $1.50/hr. Three hours was the perfect amount of time to walk the entire zoo without rushing.

If you have little ones or just love seeing animals, I definitely recommend spending some time at the Honolulu Zoo! It’s such a fun and relaxing spot right in Waikīkī, and it’s perfect for families, couples, or anyone looking for something enjoyable to do outdoors. We visited in October with our family of 10, including several young kids, and everyone had a great time. The weather was absolutely perfect — warm but not too hot — and there was plenty of shade throughout the zoo to keep things comfortable. The grounds are beautiful and well-kept, and the staff we interacted with were friendly and welcoming. This isn’t necessarily an all-day adventure, but that’s part of what makes it great. You can easily see everything in about half a day and still feel like you got the full experience. There’s a nice variety of animals to see — some of our favorites were the different monkeys, the giraffes, the hippo, the lion, and the tiger. The bird exhibits were also amazing, with so many colorful and unique species. The kids were especially fascinated by the monkeys and loved watching them swing around and play. We appreciated that the zoo was clean, easy to navigate, and not overly crowded when we went. There are spots to grab snacks or drinks, and it’s located near plenty of places to eat if you want to grab lunch afterward. The price of admission is very reasonable, especially considering how much fun and learning it offers for kids and adults alike. Overall, we had such a great experience at the Honolulu Zoo. It’s the perfect half-day outing for families visiting Oʻahu — educational, entertaining, and just the right pace for a relaxing day. Highly recommend adding it to your list of things to do while in Honolulu!

Nice staff, clean grounds, and a decent variety of animals. Elephants, giraffes, and African Penguins were some of our favorites. Some spaces were under renovation. We didn’t realize until we were there that they also have a nighttime at the zoo event on some Saturdays. Take sunscreen, a hat, and a water bottle.

This is the cleanest zoo I’ve ever been to and had a lot of variety of animals. I got to take my husband here for his first ever zoo experience. I love the exhibits and how it felt like you were in a world away from the city with the trees and landscape. I can tell the staff really takes care of the animals. Definitely hit up their cafe as they have delicious options that will surely satisfy your hunger. We spent a long time there as we wanted to see everything and get our tickets worth. Make sure to wear comfy shoes as it will take you more than two hours to see everything. We went on a weekday close to opening and it wasn’t too busy.

For $21 per adult and free for our 18 month old daughter, there is value for what you pay. That said, many exhibits were closed. We were able to enter without any wait. Bird heavy zoo/exhibits. Elephants, Giraffes and lions were my favorite. The highlight was the gibbons being quite lively (see video, volume up)! The giant koi fish were impressive as well. You’re definitely getting your steps in visiting this zoo! Be sure to pay for parking at the pay station before you enter and leave the receipt on your dashboard. Fair amount of parking.

What a cute zoo! Very good variety of animals. Animals had tons of space. They looked comfortable and happy. We had a great time!

Amazing zoo! Great half off Veteran and Military discount. Get there early because it can be hot and lots to see! The monkeys, tigers, and little foxes were my favorite. Amazing date idea if you have some down time in Oahu or need some laid back to do in walking distance.

Great zoo, easy to walk and good enclosures for the animals, volunteers to help educate you on the animals behavior and wonderful exhibits! The monkeys were especially active during our visit, howling and singing and swinging! The giant galapagos tortoises are amazing as well as the African penguins....lots to see, definately worth a visit when in Oahu

Located on the southeastern coast of Oahu, Halona Blow Hole is a captivating natural wonder formed by an ancient lava tube. As waves crash into the cliffs, seawater shoots as high as 30 feet through this scenic cove. Visitors can enjoy commanding views of the craggy coast and Pacific Ocean while witnessing this impressive display. It's important to note that swimming in the area is not recommended due to strong currents, but observing the blowhole from a distance offers a thrilling experience.
Beautiful photo spot. Highly recommend. Worth a stop and a detour. To the right there is a little path that leads down to a small beach area with a cave. Highly recommend checking out both areas. Wear good shoes, watch your step if following path down to cave area.

Meh, there was not that much water spewing from the blowhole and we went twice. Slightly illegal but easily doable path down to the beach cove and left over to the blowhole itself, middle for cave, right/straight for cliff. Be careful if you climb the rocks, go in the cave, or swim. The currents are strong after about 15 metres in, do not swim if inexperienced. Bring a friend for safety!
Harinder D — Google review
Check for high tide when you go here. Unless it's high tide you won't see the blowhole steam. It's a nice stop at the lookout. You can also hike down to the spot if you want. There is limited parking but there was a police guiding us.

We happened to be on Oahu during a very windy 4 days, and we ventured out to see the Diamond Head side of the island and to see the blowhole. It was AMAZING to see big waves, beautiful blue colors, and the water go through the blowhole and up maybe 100 feet!!! We also saw a couple of foolish people venture close to the opening. The water came out with the force of a fire hose!!!

Beautiful little beach accessible from a trail on the side of the lookout. The rock walls surrounding the beach are very unique with almost Mars-like attributes. One of my favorite beaches on the island. Saw a sea turtle (:
Marshall M — Google review
This is a great place to stop and observe the beauty of nature. You have the chance to see whales out in the ocean playing. There is also the chance to see a sea turtle playing in the water as well. There is a beautiful beach area to climb down to and swim or snorkel in the clear water. There is a chance to observe the blowhole erupt, but it seems very erratic. Also there is a big area where people have stacked stones along this sides of the cliffs.

This is one of my favorite stops. The scenery is most captivating and almost nothing like it in the world. The blowhole allows for an incredible swimming experience nestled in a cool location. Drive up Route 72 from Waikiki and check it out.

Diamond Head Crater is a saucer-shaped 350-acre crater located in Hawaii, known for its hiking trail and military buildings. It is a significant natural, cultural, historical, and recreational resource in the state. The Division of State Parks is proposing changes to improve the visitor experience at Diamond Head State Monument. The area also features an interpretive kiosk providing information about the crater's history and resources.
First of all, parking at this location is strictly a premium. If you plan on driving definitely make reservations well in advance. As for me....I Uber it to/from the site. The adventure is hiking to the craters submit. The hike is about 1.6 miles round trip with some "very" strange twists, turns and stair climbing. Some would tell you that this is a "modest nature walk." Modest...not way. it is not an easy hike by any means. You will be sucking air (smile) But once you get to the top (and catch your breath) you won't be disappointed. The view at the top is just SPECTACULAR, REALLY. It's breath-taking just o look out at the ocean. You won't spend a lot of time at the top but when you do come down you can boast that "I did it. I climbed Diamond Head crater. "

Hiking Diamond Head in Honolulu, Hawaii offers an outstanding adventure just a 10-minute drive from Waikiki Beach. The trail spans around 2 miles, taking approximately 60 minutes to complete. Before heading out, it’s essential to secure a reservation and pay a modest fee of around $6 per person. The hike begins with a moderate ascent, gradually intensifying as you near the summit. The absence of water stations or restrooms along the way emphasizes the need to prepare adequately with hydration and restroom stops beforehand. The panoramic views from the top are truly breathtaking. As you ascend, the shimmering Pacific Ocean unfolds before you, with Waikiki Beach sprawling out below. The sight of Honolulu’s skyline against the backdrop of the ocean is nothing short of spectacular. The trail’s challenges, including steep sections and uneven terrain, add to the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit. It’s a rewarding experience for both novice and seasoned hikers alike. For those visiting Waikiki and seeking a memorable outdoor adventure, Diamond Head is a must-visit. The accessibility from Waikiki Beach combined with the stunning views makes it a popular choice. Just be sure to plan ahead with reservations and prepare for the hike’s physical demands to fully enjoy this iconic Hawaiian experience.

Though the hike to the top is at your own pace it is well worth the trip. The view is beautiful and breathtaking. Rest assured that it will not disappoint. The top can get really crowded but you should be able to manage a some real estate for your photo angle of choice. Parking is quite challenging and ensure to take plenty of water.

The trial to the top starts off with smooth pavement, turns into uneven/rocky pavement and then alot of stairs to get to the top. It's well worth it! Such a breathtaking view at the top. You'll be glad you hiked the 30 minute trail.

Very nice place for hiking. It gets busy on certain days. It took me and my husband 35-40 minutes getting to the top. Love taking a sip of their delicious fresh pineapple 🍍 slushy after a good hike. Would love to go there again when we go back to Hawaii.

You looking for a way to burn those calories from a night of drinking and reep the rewards of some of Hawaii's majestic scenary, well heres your place. You only need to pay for parking to get real close. If your up to the walk, parkoutside and make the walk in. I think its a 1.5 mile walk from the closest point. Dont worry if you dont make it through the long tunnels, youll see so much on the way up. Its in a bit of disarray and work needs to get done to make the trail safer to walk. If your out of shape forget it. Regardless, the finally at the end is woth the struggle to the observation post. You get to look down at Waikiki and marvel at the beautiful beaches and water. Hope this helps. Please like my review. Thank you.

The Pearl Harbor Historic Sites Visitor Center is a significant naval base that gained notoriety due to the 1941 Japanese attack, which led to the United States' entry into World War II. The center serves as the gateway to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial and offers interpretive exhibits in two galleries, showcasing photographs and personal memorabilia from WWII veterans. Visitors can also explore other exhibits, a bookstore, and a Remembrance Circle honoring those who lost their lives during the attack.
Must visit place when visiting Oahu,Hawaii. Wanted to see pearl harbor without spending all day there so I booked a tour with Hawaii Rainbow Tours and did the Pearl Harbor Island Tour. Great choice. Got to spend 1 hr and 30min here and got to see and do a whole lot. They have many bathrooms. Nice gift shop. Free museums and some paid ones. They even have a little mart to buy snacks at if your a little hungry. Great stop!

Booked tickets for a weekday and arrived around 9AM. Was able to find a parking space with no issue, and were also able to join the wait list for USS Arizona memorial tickets. Got a callback by 9:40, which was fantastic. After visiting the Arizona, headed to the USS Missouri, the Ford Island Aviation Museum (which was an excellent addition, though it made the day very long in order to see everything as best we could), and the Bowfin submarine. Visited back in 2001 as a child, so visiting as an adult was a great experience.

It’s fine — an important place for Americans, but not particularly impressive for Europeans (another 2nd war battlefield site). For one dollar, you can take a boat tour to the main memorial above the sunken battleship USS Arizonai. Rather poorly marked. Important: leave all bags in the car, even small ones — the storage fee is 10 USD.
P G — Google review
Visiting Pearl Harbor is both awe-inspiring and deeply sobering. The memorial is beautifully maintained, and it offers a powerful glimpse into one of the most pivotal moments in history. Standing above the USS Arizona, you can feel the weight of the past and the sacrifice made by so many. It's an incredibly moving experience that brings history to life in a way that books and films simply cannot. The fact that this experience is free to the public makes it all the more remarkable. It’s a gift—both educational and emotional—and a must-see for anyone visiting Oahu. Truly unforgettable.
David N — Google review
If you can go on a sunny day at low tide with little wind, you will have the best experience. The reason you arrive an hour early is to watch the movie before taking the boat to the memorial. The movie theater is in the same building where you line up for the boat.

15 years later and 4 visits there I am still very humbled by it. The attractions for kids are very good. My teenagers even had a great time. We spent 6 hours there this time and still didn't see everything as we came later in the day. My boys loved the flight simulator which goes in every direction. 100% recommend. Go straight to sign up for the Arizona after purchasing your tickets there or online. Then go see the submarine while you await the text.

5 Stars – Tasty Samples, Great Gifts, and a Perfect Circle Island Tour Stop! We stopped at Tropical Farms Macadamia Nuts during our Oʻahu Circle Island Tour and were so glad we did! Parking was a little tight, but with people constantly coming and going, we found a spot quickly. First things first—try the free coffee samples! (I may have helped myself to three… totally worth it!) The coffee was rich and smooth, perfect to sip while exploring the shop. Inside, there’s plenty to see—from nut samples in tons of unique flavors to local gifts, souvenirs, and handmade items. It’s a great place to pick up something for friends or family back home. There’s also a public bathroom and a shaded area with seating, which is a nice bonus for anyone doing a full-day drive around the island. We were all very pleased with the stop, and my family ended up buying the garlic macadamia nuts—they were a hit! If you’re passing by or doing the Circle Island route, Tropical Farms is a must-visit for flavor, culture, and a little rest along the way.

Few different tiers of tickets options based on price and interest. They offer bus pick up from Waikiki for a bit additional cost. Over all very nice experience for adults and kids. Kids can play games, learn the culture, watch performance, they offer tour guides in your own language. It’s a big park, we were there from opening 12 p- 10p. U need at least 2 days to finish all activities. Ticket valid for 3 days. Parking is free. Dinner was good. The final show was well organized and unique, they kind of linked all islands into one story (no video recording allowed) I do highly recommend visiting this play in Oahu. My family enjoyed it.

Tropical Farms Macadamia Nut Outlet is an absolute must-stop when driving along Oʻahu's beautiful Windward Coast! It's much more than just a souvenir shop—it's a fun, family-friendly slice of local culture that makes for an unforgettable break. A Truly Unique Experience One of the highlights that made this stop so memorable was the chance to engage with the farm animals. Seeing the wild chickens roaming the grounds is charming, but what's really cute is being able to offer them the cracked shell casings from the nuts! The chickens eagerly gather for the treat, and it adds a wonderfully authentic, rustic feel to the visit. Get Hands-On and Snack Up! I also loved the simple, interactive pleasure of cracking open a fresh macadamia nut yourself. It gives you a great appreciation for the effort that goes into harvesting them and provides the freshest possible sample! Speaking of samples, the store is incredibly generous with its free tastings of different macadamia nut varieties. I highly recommend trying the Kona Coffee Glazed and the Maui Onion & Garlic—you'll want to buy multiple bags! They have every flavor you can imagine. The Perfect Hawaiian Souvenir Beyond the delicious nuts and coffee, Tropical Farms is a fantastic place to pick up unique gifts. For anyone who wants to take a piece of the islands home, they offer plumeria trees that are TSA cleared for mainland travel. This is a huge convenience and makes for a living, lasting souvenir of your trip! The staff is friendly, the location is beautiful, and the products are top-notch. Stop here for a true taste and feel of old Hawaiʻi!

Shark’s Cove is a popular snorkeling spot located on the North Shore of Oahu. Despite its name, it's not known for shark sightings but rather for its abundance of fish, coral, and unique rock formations. As one of only three Marine Life Conservation Districts on Oahu, it offers a rich underwater ecosystem with various marine life that are less afraid of human visitors. The area is especially great for beginners as it provides a sense of safety within the naturally-protected swimming area.
This is one of the better snorkel spots on the island. Beware a parking can be rough. Getting into the water and maneuvering around the water and the rocks is very difficult. Especially when there’s crowds. I don’t think this should discourage somebody from coming though. I would definitely recommend putting your slippers on once you’re slightly in the water instead of trying to walk with them on. Once you have your flippers on and you’re in deep enough water, I recommend swimming right away. It’s much easier than trying to stand and maneuver through the different rocks and waves. There are two different sections of sharks Cove. The tide pools on the left side and the deeper side on the right. I think it’s worth it to explore both. The shallow waters of the tide pools allow you to see coral and little creatures much closer up. The deeper water gives you a better look at bigger fish, and potentially things like turtles.
Ashley L — Google review
This is always a place I return to for a sheltered cove for snorkeling and if you're an able swimmer and the waves are tame, you can swim around the perimeter of Shark's Cove. Highly recommended and like I said I always return when I visit Oahu, weather permitting. Family friendly for kids, recommend getting water shoes because the rocks are sharp!
Sam — Google review
EPIC entry-level snorkeling within a big "pool". Break wall keeps the waves and the sharks out if you're concerned about that. Mostly 3-6ft feet deep, quite clear, some rocks/coral but everywhere under the water is smooth with sand between. Sandals or watershoes would be advised but not required. Tons of families and kids. Water is mostly very calm. There's a small opening at the outer edge where the current comes in, but its deep enough that you don't get pushed into the rocks. You can go outside the break wall but it's about 15ft deep and rougher on the outside. LOTS of cool fish, you can practically touch them. But watch out for Urchins. They're not poisonous, but they are all over, hiding in holes and under rocks, so be careful where youn put your hands. Fair amount of parking around. Grovery store and food trucks across the street. Washrooms could be better (no soap).

This was a fun place to visit with our family. We purchased our snorkel and masks in advance of our trip to hawaii. The water was super clear, and we were able to see many fish and sea life in the reef area. You could easily spend about 2 to 3 hours in this place. Make sure you wear sunscreen as it can be pretty hot in the month of june.

We saw lots beautiful fish and even a turtle! It can be very shallow though so you're doing a lot of wading and climbing over rocks. Water shoes are a must. Maybe try to go at high tide so the water will be a little deeper.

It’s very kid-friendly with plenty of open space to relax and enjoy the day. Just a tip: parking is very limited, so plan your visit early or during off-peak times to get a spot. Definitely worth the effort! And again don’t forget your goggles 🥽

Waimea Falls, located in Waimea Valley on the North Shore of Oahu, is a picturesque 45-foot waterfall that drops into a serene pool surrounded by lush foliage. It is one of the safest family-oriented waterfalls with an active lifeguard on duty and changing rooms available. The area requires visitors to wear life vests for safety while swimming in the freshwater pools. The valley has been transformed into a botanical garden and educational center, offering a family-friendly hike to reach the falls.
Waimea Valley is a must-visit destination on Oʻahu, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural history, and an accessible outdoor adventure. The botanical gardens along the way are absolutely stunning—home to an incredible variety of tropical plants, flowering trees, and rare species from around the world. It feels like walking through a living museum of nature, with informative signs that make the experience both beautiful and educational. The paved path to the waterfall is about three-quarters of a mile (1.2 km) each way, making it easy for families, kids, and visitors of all ages. You’ll pass ancient Hawaiian archaeological sites and enjoy plenty of shaded spots to rest or take photos. The waterfall at the end is absolutely worth the trip. Surrounded by lush greenery, it’s a peaceful spot that feels like a hidden paradise. And yes—you can swim in the pool beneath the falls! Life jackets are provided and required for safety, and lifeguards are on duty, which makes it a rare and safe opportunity to swim under a real Hawaiian waterfall. Whether you’re a plant lover, nature walker, or just looking for a refreshing swim in an unforgettable setting, Waimea Valley has something for everyone. It’s a great way to experience the natural and cultural richness of Hawaii all in one spot. Highly recommended!

Gorgeous hike to reach these waterfalls with my wife during our honeymoon. Trail was easy to access and there was a fruit stand outside to grab a snack. People did end up waddling into the falls when we went given temp were relatively high then. Just be sure to bring bug block. Portapotty available in an emergency.

FYI - if you are going here to see the waterfall, you’ll be disappointed. It cost us about $70 (family of 3) to enter the park. (Free parking). We knew the waterfall was not really running due to lack of rain. It’s about a .80 mile walk to the falls. All paved paths for the most part. There are a few areas which you should divert off to explore the various plants and flowers. They have some demonstration areas along the way as well. Also a snack bar and bathroom about half way through. Swimming is only allowed when the water is really flowing , otherwise you are likely to catch a parasite which could trigger flu like symptoms. There was great church service happening when we arrived Sunday morning at the main check in area. They also have plenty of bathrooms, large gift shop and plenty of options for food as well.

We were in a group of 6 that booked the Kipahele Tour, riding on a covered oversized golf cart. Our driver/guide's name is George. His tour around the Valley and to the waterfall is outstanding! George is a Hawaiian history buff, all about the area. His tour around the Valley is about an hour long. He tells the Hawaiian story as we meandered through the various spots. We highly recommend this tour! Afterwards, if the Falls are safe when you visit, you can take a dip. There is also a nice snack bar and eating area, near the parking lot.

Currently the best botanical garden l've ever seen in my life. The location is actually massive and it's very easy to hang out in for hours upon hours if you want to savor every experience this luscious landscape has to offer. The waterfall at the end is definitely a nice treat, fairly large size every time I've been, which is nice considering some waterfall trails can be disappointing based off the past weather. Kid friendly experience, life jackets provided at the falls. Tickets are 25 dollars per person with discounts for military, and there's multiple shops to grab snacks/drinks. A definite must if you're willing to make the drive out.

Waimea Valley 🌺🌴 Such a beautiful place to walk through, literally flowers and greenery everywhere you look. There were so many unique flowers, and even wild peacocks walking around, which was super cool. The colours were insane. It’s peaceful but also lively, with birds and nature sounds all around. They even had signs showing which movies and shows were filmed there: Jumanji, LOST, Hunger Games, etc. The hike itself was easy and fun, and the whole valley felt like a mix of nature and culture. Definitely worth it.

The hike is very easy, paved for the most part. There plenty of side trails to go into and see fauna and flora which can extend how long the hike takes you. The waterfall was gorgeous, they did have provided life vests at the waterfall so you can dip in if you’d like.

The rest of the experience you'll need to experience for yourself. Would I walk it again, probably not. The trail offers stunning panoramic views of Lanikai Beach, Kaneohe Bay, Chinamans Hat, and Waimanalo. It features two military bunkers from World War II and is a favorite among locals for its challenging yet rewarding ascent above the beautiful beach.
Did this hike with our 4 year old and it was a great experience, though a bit more technical than some others since there are no railings. It was still manageable, just take your time especially on the way down. A lovely local even helped us along the way which made it easier. Easy to reach by bus and afterwards we went to the nearby beach to relax for the rest of the day. Super fun overall!

My wife made it about 1/2 way up and said that was it, I made it to the top and it is a spectacular view and sunrise was beautiful. Regardless if you make it to the top, my wife said the views were also as wonderful. Make sure you have good shoes if you decide to adventure up.

My husband and I read reviews for this hike and were assured by our Uber driver, Tommy, that it was “easy as shit!” Well, Tommy… I’ve got some news. I consider myself semi-active, but I still managed to walk away with a bloody knee and the self-esteem of a turnip after a three-legged dog passed us—not once, but twice. That said, this hike is an absolute MUST-DO! Go early, take your time, and prepare to be blown away by the views. Everyone on the trail was so supportive and encouraging—it felt like we were all in it together. If you spot the three-legged dog, don’t let his smug little trot get in your head. Rumor has it he does the trail a few times a week. 😅 All jokes aside, the views are phenomenal, the vibe is awesome, and it’s worth every slippery step. Just wear shoes with good grip—my old tennis shoes didn’t quite cut it on the way down. Add it to your list when visiting Hawai’i! 🌺🏝️

Strongly recommend; wonderful short hike with phenomenal views! One of the best for the amount of effort to get to the top for the views you get. Both pillboxes are great, and you could follow the ridge further but the best view is from the pillboxes. Personally I find the hike easy but if you don’t exercise or hike regularly consider it moderate because some folks may find the steep ascent, loose rocks (or mud if it rained), and no shade challenging. For gear it’ll depend on fitness levels; but I usually wear hiking shoes and carry a bottle of water and I’m good. Others might need more water, sun screen, a hat, or poles for mobility. You’ll also see people do the hike in slippers or running shoes, which is fine unless it rains. Then it’s a muddy mess.
Brandon C — Google review
Nice hike. Beautiful views. We got unlucky and got rained on pretty heavily at the top. The track is dangerously slippery from mud when it's wet so take that into consideration if the conditions are wet!
Matt R — Google review
This is a challenging uphill. Parts of the trail are washed out and on the way down, you may have to use your hands or I saw some people sliding on their butts. Towards the end of our hike it started to rain. Rock became a slip and slide. Anything that was dirt became mud. Really good idea to have correct shoes and not try this in your flip-flops.
Ohsodesign — Google review
The trail itself is great! No parking at the trail head so we parked at Lanikai Beach and walked 0.6 miles to the trail head. The trail was dusty so a little slippery but the rock, roots, and ropes made the initial incline doable. Some flat open spaces with fantastic breezes were much appreciated after the rock scrambles. Take sunscreen, water and some snacks and enjoy a little break at the top of the pillboxes.

Harbor
Pearl Harbor is a significant historical site that commemorates the tragic attack by Japanese forces on the Pacific Fleet in 1941, drawing visitors interested in World War II and American military history. The memorial honors over 2,400 Americans who lost their lives during the assault and offers insights into this pivotal moment. While admission to Pearl Harbor Historic Sites is free, some museums on-site require fees.
Visiting Pearl Harbor was an unforgettable and humbling experience. To stand at such a historic site and see the memorials dedicated to those who lost their lives on December 7, 1941, was truly powerful. It was mind-blowing to see the evidence, exhibits, and actual remains of the ships, and to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many men and women who served. The site is well-preserved and presented with great respect, making it both educational and emotional. It’s more than just a tourist attraction it’s a chance to connect with history and honor those who gave everything. Highly recommend this to anyone visiting Hawaii. 🇺🇸
Wade Z — Google review
Parking lot costs 7$, apart from that the entrance to the memorial site and the very informative museum is free!! Museum and extra tours cost extra though. Very special place, they did a great job designing the memorial and the museum there.

This is a very important place with great history of WW2 and we learnt a lot about the event on 7 December 1941. We visited Arizona Memorial, a very beautiful memorial. There was no presale tickets due to construction works. We went early and got our standby tickets. Waited for 3.5hours and got sms to go to the boat area. There is beautiful movie theatre and museums.

5 Stars – A Powerful and Unforgettable Experience at Pearl Harbor Visiting Pearl Harbor in Hawaii is truly an unforgettable experience and one I highly recommend to anyone coming to Oahu. When we visited, it wasn’t crowded at all, which made it easier to really take in the history and explore the entire area at a comfortable pace. Pearl Harbor is not just a single attraction—it’s a thoughtfully designed historic site with several important memorials and museums that together tell the story of one of the most significant days in American history. The USS Arizona Memorial is incredibly moving, offering a quiet, reflective space to honor those who lost their lives on December 7, 1941. The boat ride to the memorial is smooth and well organized, and the rangers provide helpful insight along the way. Nearby, the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center has excellent exhibits, artifacts, and personal stories that bring the events of that day to life. There’s also the option to visit the Battleship Missouri, where the Japanese surrender was signed, and the USS Bowfin Submarine, which gives a fascinating look into life aboard a WWII submarine. Each part of the site adds a deeper layer of understanding. Overall, Pearl Harbor is a must-see—beautifully maintained, educational, and deeply meaningful. A powerful reminder of our history and absolutely worthy of a 5-star rating.

A dream come true to be able to finally visit! We were able to get tickets at the counter. Main area and museum opens 9:30am, we arrived 10:30am on a Sunday. Everything closes at 5pm. Parking was easy to find as they are 3 small lots adjacent can host ~150 cars, paid $7 for parking with the QR code just before the entrance. Personal bags are not allowed! Bag holding/storage is available, if you insist. We purchased tickets for the USS Missouri ($40; battle ship) and Bowfin ($20; submarine). Mostly self-guided. Bring earphones if you like to use the audio guides. There were ~30 minute tour with guide free on the Missouri. Lots to see but we only had one day. 4 hours at the Missouri + 1 hour lunch + 2 hours at the Bowfin. There are charter bus les that shuttle us to the various exhibits. ~10 minute wait with large covered canopy and benches. Food “trucks” & kiosks available before each entrance (~$15/pp). My parents say it’s improved and expanded quite a bit since their visit in 2000. For history-fanatics, it could easily a 2-day visit to see everything. Of course you can feel the deep history! It’s a memorial. I greatly appreciate that it’s been kept with care and respect. Can’t wait to visit it another time.

Absolutely great. We had a veteran with us who filled us in with lots of Navy stories. Arizona memorial and USS Missouri were great. Sub museum was interesting. For us, the least interesting was the aviation museum.
Patrick S — Google review
Absolutely, staggeringly amazing. There is no way I can put into words this experience. Such mixed feelings. It feels like a tourist place, yet it's so strongly a memorial to its victims. It has been beautifully put together and managed. The museums are wonderful. We went on the Arizona boat trip. The memorial is so very moving. It was an honour to be allowed there. The Bowfin submarine is amazing. To be allowed to have full access to this submarine & understand the history behind it. Literally walking in history! The Missouri ship is staggering. Ensure you go on one of the free guided tours, highly recommended.

My husband is currently in Hawaii for business. However, he had a rare day off and took the opportunity to check out the local sites and the Pearl Harbor national site. It’s very impressive. You definitely can feel the history when you are there. If you are in Hawaii, make a point to spend some time at this memorial and taking a bit of history!

Koko Head is a stunning destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. This extinct volcano features a challenging trail that leads to its summit, where hikers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the island, including iconic sights like Diamond Head. The hike itself consists of 1,048 stairs that were once part of an old railway system used by the military. As you ascend, you'll encounter remnants of historical Army bunkers and can even catch fireworks on Friday nights from the peak.
Be aware of not only the elevation but keeping your balance. Lots of flies too...it can get windy and some areas there's a gap so it's dangerous. When you get to the top best feeling ever
Ehsan G — Google review
Best to go on a weekday and make sure to go early…between 6-730am. Very steep and definitely not an easy hike. Highly recommend good walking or hiking shoes. Something with grip would help since the trail can get slippery. Gorgeous views all the way up until the very top and you feel a sense of accomplishment when you’ve mastered it.

The Great Railway Sleepers Stairmaster Challenge If you ever wondered how many railway sleepers it takes to turn a peaceful walk into a full-body workout — this is your chance to find out. Rumor has it there are hundreds (possibly thousands?) of them, each one carefully designed to test your legs, lungs, and will to live. My son, full of youthful energy and optimism, conquered the climb in 16 minutes. I, on the other hand, heroically arrived 10 minutes later, pretending I was “just enjoying the view.” Along the way, we met fellow hikers employing various techniques — from the elegant “steady ascent” to the desperate “four-limb survival crawl.” No judgment here. Tip: Bring good shoes, plenty of water, and a sense of humor. This isn’t your average Sunday stroll — it’s a stairway to both heaven and sore calves. But when you reach the top, the panoramic view makes every drop of sweat totally worth it. Would I do it again? Absolutely. Would I still complain halfway up? Also absolutely. 10/10 — highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a challenge, great views, and questioning their life choices halfway through an adventure.

⛰️ Koko Head Crater Trail – Short, Savage, and Totally Worth It 🔥 This hike? Unforgettable. It may look short on paper, but don’t let the distance fool you—Koko Head will test your willpower, your legs, and your hydration strategy 😅. It’s basically a stairway to heaven made out of an old railway track... except heaven is 1,048 steep, soul-crushing steps straight up 🥵. Bring WATER—and I mean it 💧. While I was up there, a couple folks had to get airlifted out by helicopter 🚁 after realizing halfway up that this trail isn't your average Sunday stroll. But me? My ass made it to the top 💪—one step at a time, lungs burning, legs trembling, pride intact. The views from the summit? Absolutely insane. Panoramic shots of Hanauma Bay, the coastline, and a breeze that feels like it was sent by the gods just for making it. Take a moment, soak it in, and snap that victory photo—you earned it 📸. Pro tip: go early to beat the heat, wear good shoes, and stretch out afterward. Your quads will be talking to you for days. MTC

Title: Stunning Views Await at Koko Head Trail I recently hiked the Koko Head Trail after hearing numerous positive reviews, and I can confidently say that the views are indeed spectacular and well worth the effort. I recommend bringing plenty of water, as staying hydrated is crucial during the hike. While the trail may appear manageable at the start, it does become increasingly challenging as you approach the summit. Taking your time is essential, especially in the latter sections, to fully appreciate the breathtaking scenery and ensure a safe ascent. Overall, I highly recommend the Koko Head Trail for anyone seeking an exhilarating outdoor experience. The stunning panoramic views at the top make it a truly rewarding hike

I enjoyed the views and the hike. Also saw there was a trail you can walk along the ridge that starts at the top hike is on an abandoned railroad track. at the top you see a now rusted pulley device that was used for the rail carts. super cool to see the historical artifacts here. I walked up in 25 mins; my partner did it in 20 mins. there’s dedicated (free) parking Rating: 8/10 difficulty, 9/10 scenery pictured: view of Koko Head and Hanauma Bay from Diamond Head

This hike is CHALLENGING yet SO worth it! I’d like to think we’re both very fit people. We’re college soccer referees. I lift 4-5 times per week. We run. But wow. This was tough. Way harder than we expected. My advice is to go slow. Bring water and electrolytes as there is no water available on the climb. I would avoid if raining or dark. The steps are pretty uneven and a bit dangerous at times. Some people wore hiking shoes and seemed to have an easier time, but we got by in tennis shoes. The top is amazing. There are so many different photo opportunities and lookout points. Once we made it to the top, we were so happy we completed the climb.

I tackled the Koko Head Trail 15 months ago and I did it again at nine months pregnant with my husband, and I can proudly say it was absolutely worth it! Even though it was challenging, every step reminded me of how strong and determined we can be when we set our minds to a goal. The climb is tough, but the breathtaking view at the top makes every effort worthwhile. It’s a physical and mental challenge that left me with an indescribable sense of accomplishment. I recommend bringing plenty of water, going at your own pace, and taking breaks when needed. For me, it was more than just a hike—it was a testament to resilience, strength, and positivity, especially during such a special time in my life. If you’re looking for an inspiring adventure that will energize and uplift you, Koko Head is the place to go! 4months later …. We did it again 😎 It worth every single time 🥰

Despite its proximity to Waikiki Beach, it offers a more relaxed and less crowded atmosphere, making it a favorite among locals. The beach is family-friendly and designed for various activities such as swimming, picnicking, barbecuing, running, or simply taking a leisurely stroll.
One time long time ago I hade few spare hours and I decided to go to the Ala Moana Beach. I’m honest. That was one the best day of my staying at Hawaii. Beautiful place. Very peaceful. No crowded. I felt lake this place is exclusively for me. ❤️

While there is minimal shade, there are showers and restrooms, plenty of place for trash. All around a great beach just minutes away from any downtown Waikiki hotel/airbnb.

The Kaneohe Sandbar is a hidden gem on the eastern side of Oahu, offering an unforgettable experience for those who venture out to its shallow waters during low tide. This stunning natural formation provides a picturesque backdrop of the Koolau Mountains and nearby islets, making it perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and even turtle spotting. While many visitors overlook this enchanting spot, it's easily accessible by boat or kayak—ideal for families seeking adventure.
My favorite thing to do on Oahu. All my friends and guests say the same thing after the experience there. Beautiful Bay surrounded by majestic mountains and turquoise waters. Tide changes throughout the day. Enjoy company, eat, drink. And be merry. Play catch, SUP, snorkel, party, or just relax any time of year. The place is my go to spot for rest and relaxation.
Pete A — Google review
I went there 4 years ago. Looking back, it was a truly unique experience. White sand in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by shallow water. When snorkeling, you need to swim a little farther from the sand (we joined a tour, and our guide led us to the snorkeling area), and the water suddenly drops into deep, dark blue ocean, and sunlight still penetrates the deep water, illuminating countless fish below you. You might even spot sea turtles gliding gracefully nearby. If you’ve never been snorkeling in the open deep sea, it can feel intimidating, but the sight is absolutely breathtaking.
Melanie Y — Google review
We didn't actually make it out to the sandbar, we walked out from the harbour/beach until we hit some coral and explored there. It was fun and free. If we took a tour to the sandbar I am sure it would have been even more incredible, but being as I didn't have it planned we just drove here and figured it out. Still had a good time snorkeling on the shore. You just have to walk out far enough past the seaweed until you hit coral. We went in the morning while the tide was low, and the water was at waist-level so I could walk the whole way.
Tina H — Google review
A good moment to enjoy before leaving Hawaii for a better life. A good spot to have fun drinking and hangout with friends there. When I was there, there was a big boat hosting a block party there with a bunch of people. Had a buddy that owns a boat to take us there and it was worth it. Going through the Pacific Ocean passing through coconut island to get to the sandbar. By the time we left, it got crowded. Not really a party person but some say they go there all the time for parties like that but it was my first time there. Remember to pick up your trash and take it with you on your way back to shore to keep the place respectful 🙏 🤙 💯
Jerome A — Google review
Love the sand bar! It takes some work and strength to paddle out all the way there. You need to check the weather before committing to this little adventure.
Austin — Google review
We spent about an hour here. We saw more sea turtles(5+) in that 1 hr than my trip to the great barrier reef (granted the reefs and biodiversity are/is different). They are mainly past the sandbar drop off and in the slightly deeper end of the reefs. I would put this as a must visit spot for anyone visiting the islands.
Ying ( — Google review
We went on a tour to Kaneohe Sandbar. It's difficult to get there privately since it's a few minutes offshore by boat. The sandbar appears twice a day during low tide and is surrounded by coral, making the waters calm and crystal clear. We snorkeled around the deeper areas with abundant coral, enjoying the sight of numerous fish and sea turtles swimming or resting. The staff mentioned that seeing a sea turtle is considered good luck, and we were fortunate to see many of them, which brought us plenty of joy! This was the most exciting ocean experience we had. It was such a wonderful time that we wished we could have stayed and snorkeled privately for hours.🥰The only disappointing thing was that I couldn't press my phone due to the water pressure, so I couldn't capture any footage of the underwater scenery. Next time, I'll make sure to prepare the right equipment.😊👍
Yulily — Google review
We took a catamaran excursion that spent a couple hours at the sandbar and it was incredible. It felt sureal being able to walk around so far out into the ocean. The water was knee deep for us. We didn't see any marine life which was fine according to my little kids!
