Are you looking for the best camp sites in Gauteng? You’re not alone! Many of us love traveling on the Wanderlog team, so naturally we’re always on the hunt to find the most popular spots anytime we travel somewhere new. We’ve looked through different sources to find the best options, including favorites like Thorn Tree Bush Camp, Koedoesrus Boskamp, and Mountain Sanctuary Park.
Why trust us
We scoured through the internet and read through 7 reputable sites and blogs like Camp and Live and The South African. We gathered all the results in one place and ranked them by how many times they were mentioned so you know you're getting the best of the best. Just look for the "mentioned by" tags on each place.

Thorn Tree Bush Camp is highly recommended for a real bush experience that connects you with nature. The Weeping Boerbean tent offers a quiet and private stay with a beautiful view of the bush, while the Monkey Thorn house provides a peaceful and well-equipped accommodation. The camp is known for its fantastic birding opportunities and game drives, as well as its helpful and friendly staff. Located just 60km from Pretoria, it offers an authentic and isolated bush experience that's well maintained and managed.
Our stay at Thorn Tree was the perfect bush breakaways. The campsite was well situated and the ablution well maintained. The staff where very helpful and the owner has a hands on approach which was reassuring on a busy long weekend. This is a camp we will definitely be visiting again and again.

We loved camping here, it is well maintained but basic as we expected. Staff is very friendly and helpful. We loved the bathroom and toilet that is assigned to each campsite. Boiler works great for hot water. It is located in Dinokeng so top lactation. It is best to go in the week as weekends can be busy and more noisy. Well worth a stay. Price can be a bit better as you need to payR75 pppd access to Dinokeng. If you want do self-drive you all need to pay R250 once off self drive permit.
Louis W — Google review
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Thorn Tree Bush Camp, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the bush. Nights were filled with the calls of hyenas, jackals, and lions. The camp features a lovely pool with shade netting, perfect for relaxation. We opted for the simple yet comfortable single-bed tents, which met our needs. For those seeking more luxury, upgraded rooms are available. One suggestion for improvement is to update the bedding to white linens or plain and neutral colors like grey or khaki, as the current colorful options didn't quite fit the aesthetic. The tents came equipped with a bush kitchen, complete with pots, pans, braai gear, plates, and a gas plate. Hot water was always available in the communal bathroom, thanks to the reliable 'Donkie'. The tents and surrounding areas were well-lit, eliminating the need for additional lighting. While not luxurious, Thorn Tree Bush Camp offers a charming and authentic bush experience, surpassing our expectations compared to Pretorious Kop in the Kruger.
Thean P — Google review
We absolutely love Thorn Tree Bush camp. We have camped there 3 times now and it ticks all the boxes! Quiet, complete privacy, our own private ablutions, Timothy on standby to bring wood or ice if we need but without hovering and great bird life! Rodney has the perfect combination of attention to detail while still roughing it and giving us the opportunity to completely get away from it all. Thanks to you and your team, we look forward to being back soon. Stanley & Marylou

Thorn Tree's off-grid camping is a unique experience. We thoroughly enjoyed being emerged in the Bush and enjoying the wildlife up close (even a rhino visiting)! Highly recommended for those who are geared up for this kind of camping

A serene quiet bush camp with beautiful sounds of nature. Bird life is spectacular. Definitely a gem

Absolutely a must!!! If you are a photographer wanting that perfect shot, or need some well deserved R&R, then this is it. Hospitality and clean ablutions, and staff are willing and friendly. Can recommend thorn tree bush camp as a must visit camp

Nestled in the heart of Dinokeng, Koedoesrus Boskamp offers a serene escape into nature that is perfect for those seeking tranquility and adventure. The campsite features private ablution facilities, allowing guests to enjoy warm showers at their convenience. Set against a backdrop of stunning bushveld, visitors can witness wildlife like giraffes and zebras wandering right past their tents, creating unforgettable moments. The atmosphere is peaceful, especially during evenings filled with the sounds of jackals echoing through the landscape.
An amazing caravaning experience. Our hosts Wessie, Dirk and Jenny are wonderful. Our dogs enjoyed the bush experience and are missing the bush adventure. The campsite we had was large and secluded with private ablutions but be warned it's is rustic with open air showers... It's great showering at night looking at the stars. It was an amazing 10 day stay. We saw Giraffe, Impala, and other animals from the fence of the camp area.
Deirdre W — Google review
Very chilled location on boundary fence to bush. The bush campsites are well maintained with flushing toilet, hot-ish shower and cleaning up facilities. I must commend the cleanness of the ablutions!
Trevor W — Google review
We had a wonderful stay at Koedoes Rus in Dinokeng! The beautiful bushveld surroundings made for the perfect escape, with zebras casually passing by – a truly magical sight. The atmosphere was peaceful and relaxing, especially in the evenings with the sounds of jackals in the distance adding to the authentic bush experience. The host was incredibly friendly and helpful, making us feel right at home. Highly recommend for anyone looking to unwind in nature!
Christelle V — Google review
Koedoesrus Boskamp is exactly what it says on the label. We were on the side with the private ablutions. It was rustic and that is just fine. The bird and insect sounds day and night were superb. The owners are very friendly and service the campsites very discreetly. A peaceful place.
Ryan J — Google review
We camped and was very clean and spacious. Booked to go again already 🥳
Brett C — Google review
Quick get away. Peaceful atmosphere. Tobie and Wessie, amazing chef's, heart's people. Always make you feel at ease, warm and friendly. Must go there
Elri V — Google review
We picked one of the more private camp sites with our own ablution block. Very nice and right against the fence where we could see all the animals walk right past our tent. Just as we were finishing setting up the tent, a giraffe walked right past us. The nightlife was extremely busy too. We were there in early winter so it was a bit too cold to check out the swimming area. The private ablution block was a big upside as we could take showers any time of the day and always had warm water. The owner was very friendly and we lovvved his dogs that came to say hi every now and then. The atmosphere was very chill and you could feel the relaxation set in. Would go back in warmer temperatures again.
Angiii 2 — Google review
Pet friendly, which was awesome. Ablutions are a bit dated, but all working. Affordable. Unfortunately the conservation fees at Dinokeng was more than the camping site fees. On existing the park we waited in the extremely long que of cars for 1.5 hours to get scanned to exit to make sure ALL indeed did pay the conservation fee. Extremely frustrating.

The park provides well-maintained camping sites with ample shade and access to facilities exclusively for guests staying at the park. We went for a day trip to Mountain Sanctuary and had a fabulous day. We hiked to the natural pools and swam in them. Then had a braai next to the swimming pool and a very relaxing few hours there. It’s clean, quiet and beautiful. Highly recommended for a day trip or to camp which we have done previously.

We did a Dad’s and kids weekend at MSP and had an absolutely wonderful time. The facilities were great and the walks and swimming experiences were out of this world! We will definitely be back!
Lorimer W — Google review
Really nice part of the world. If you like camping you will enjoy the rustic living. We went for a weekend but could have stayed a bit longer. Be prepared to do a lot of walking. We experienced some amazing rock pools. There is a small shop but make sure you take enough beers and firewood.
Jordan A — Google review
Great accommodation. Great hiking trails (although we got lost 😁😁😁) it was a great adventure. Pool area well maintained and great spot to relax and braai with friends
Chris — Google review
Unbelievably amazing, very peaceful, very quiet except for the beautiful sounds of nature and an amazing hike, pools and fun.
Marelize V — Google review
Beautiful nature setting. Hiked up to the origin of the river and followed the river down-stream for an amazing canyoning experience. Some deep pools of crystal clear water to jump into.
Marius P — Google review
Place is still tranquil. Just quite empty now although people still come through. Has that rustic feel but everything is still functional from good showers to a sparkling blue pool and and. Give them a visit
Lebogangslife — Google review
Absolutely amazing experience. We luckily only saw one monkey. The trails aren’t difficult to find: they are all to either side of the restaurant. An easy way to find the grotto is to follow the black pipe from the reservoir (it’s quite the hike) And the slide pool is further up from where its trail ends. Hope that helps! Thank you mountain sanctuary for the lovely stay.

It was an awesome experience, the quiet atmosphere, the fresh air was what one needs. Its clean environment was tops. Loved the warm water swimming pool and the playground for the kids. The canoes that one can use were awesome. Would definitely visit again

Very neat ablution blocks and warm water swimming pool. Rooms in cottages also well equipped. Were disappointed by the fact that no fish were caught over the 4 day long weekend.
Louisa P — Google review
Well maintained and beautiful campsite. Cleaning staff everywhere looking after all the amenities. The booking process could have been easier with better response times. Would be nice if they limited the amount of campers as it does get really crowded. Will definitely be back, such a neat and pretty getaway.

It was a perfect place for us to stay after arrival in Johannesburg by plane and relax from the flight the first night. Very clean sanitary and super places for camping. Although there has been a school class celebrating a bit, it was still quiet in the backyard places - easy. The team is very polite and there is a pool outside and also inside the building w which can be used. 👍

One of our favourite quick breakaway spots! Peaceful and tranquil with beautiful views. Amazing ablution facilities. Take away menu looks decent and very well priced. Loved the warm water pool this past cold weekend.

This beautiful campsite offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in nature while reflecting on their spiritual journey. It was my first time and I must say that I wouldn't mind doing it again. I felt safe ,the place was beautiful. The playground, kitchen , and hall ,it was amazing.I recommend this place for everyone who wants time away from home and alone with God. However network is very bad but vodacom never gave us problems. Prayer mountain is so refreshing. I was happy and so was the rest of the team

Absolutely beautiful and peaceful. Away from all the city noise and busyness. Love how neat and well kept the premises are. I was even able to take a walk around and climb the nearby mountains. The only thing that's not ideal is the single lane leading towards the premises, the road needs a little more love even though there's a beautiful view while on the path to the premises
Kuki R — Google review
It's a great place for hiking ,praying and resting, I'll recommend .
Mpho M — Google review
I love climbing at Kings kloof, the most amazing climbing routes for beginners and the stream with natural beauty is amazing. Love the atmosphere! The only thing I can say that’s not nice is the littering of the lookout points. It’s beyond my understanding, if you go to appreciate the beautiful nature. Why do you not take your bottles, chip packs and sweet papers with you? Every time we go climbing the boys and myself pickup the litter from the stream area and the lookout points. I would recommend Rocky Valley any time for a hike and Rock climbing. But don’t leave trash next to the paths and at the lookout points.
Tanya P — Google review
A safe haven, peaceful and calm, perfect for meditation, prayer and self discovery, I loved that sounds of nature, birds chirping, water flowing and tha breeze tha never stop, definitely recommend it🫶🏽❤️

Nestled in the serene Magaliesberg Valley, Stoney Ridge SU Campsite is a haven for those seeking a peaceful retreat. With its rich history as the first Christian campsite in the Pretoria-Johannesburg area, established by Bethel and Barbara Gibson over 58 years ago, it continues to thrive under Scripture Union's dedicated management. This charming site offers organized programs tailored to your needs, making it ideal for kids and youth camps alike.
The rooms were clean as well as common area spots. The water was a bit of a let down, it wasn't consistently hot. Anyways my highlight was the delicious food and the lovely and kind ladies that prepared the food. Thankfully they have water coolers because the tap water is not drinkable. There's lot of different activities to do like volleyball, soccer, basketball, trampoline, wall climbing and swimming.

I love this place. It is so peaceful and beautiful with a lovely swimming pool. My husband's late grandparents Bethel and Barbara Gibson started Stoney Ridge about 58 years as the first ever Christian Camp Site in Pretoria Johannesburg region. It now still goes on all these years later under the capable management of Scripture Union. So many lives transformed and wonderfully changed by the work of our loving God in this place... Kyleu Bush Camp is a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts seeking an immersive outdoor experience. This open, unfenced camp offers spacious sites that can accommodate 4 to 8 guests, ensuring ample room for relaxation and enjoyment. Each campsite is thoughtfully distanced from one another—approximately 40 meters apart—allowing visitors to feel truly connected to the surrounding wilderness while still enjoying privacy. The camp features both fenced and unfenced areas, with each site providing its own clean ablution facilities and kitchenette.
Highly recommend campsite in Dinokeng. Super affordable. Staff were friendly and helpful. The facilities at the stands were great: little fire pit, braai stand, kitchen sink and shower with hot water, private bathroom, the stands were well kept and super private. Amazing spot
Thomas C — Google review
On arrival, Peter asked if we had ever camped at Kyleu before, and our answer was this was the 1st visit. Well, it will not be our last... we absolutely loved camping at Kyleu. The sites are massive and spotless, the ablutions serviced daily and adequate for your needs. The bird life is fantastic, and we enjoyed the sounds of the bush at night, we often heard Jackal and hyena calling, especially early mornings. There is a small pool to cool down on those hot days. The management and staff are extremely helpful and accommodating.
Charmaine G — Google review
Excellent Bush Camp inside Dinokeng. Booking and checking in is a breeze with friendly reception and directions at the campsite. Amenities are clean and the private campsites have excellent bathrooms and kitchen areas. Beautiful drive along the river areas with lots of game and birds in the area.
Johan S — Google review
Finally we got to experience Kyleu Bush Camp. We were greeted on arrival by Peter who was very friendly and informative. This camp offers both fenced and unfenced campsites. All sites are spacious with amazing private ablution and wash up area. All sites are off grid and have solar lights in the ablution block. You really feel like you are alone in the middle of the bush. There is a new small splash pool which the kids enjoyed. The site also includes a free bag of wood per day which is great and ice and wood can be delivered to your campsite on request. The braai and bathrooms are cleaned daily from 10:00. We took a drive into the unfenced camp which looks amazing and will definitely be trying this the next time we come and stay. We experienced unbelievable sunsets and Jackal calls every night to kick off the evening. It was also lovely hearing other night sounds like Nightjars, Lions and Hyenas. It would be nice if the fenced camp had a few buck walking around to make it feel extra bushy… other than that… it’s was a very memorable experience. Go on.. give them a try… you won’t be disappointed. Remember it’s off-grid so make sure you have what you need to power your devices. Kyleu has camp sites in a fenced area or in an unfenced area of the reserve. They are all well separated from each other, but you feel like you are totally in the bush even in the fenced area. The sites are spacious and there is some shade and they are fairly level. The sites have individual ablution / kitchenette building and are always clean. There is a communal swimming pool and a nice grassed area around this with chairs and a table under shade near the reception area.

Amazing weekend at Kyleu. Peter gave us a warm welcome on arrival with lots of relevant information regarding Dinokeng and Kyleu. Stand number 10 is large with some shade and the ablutions was spotless. You can hear Hammanskraal off in the distance but it wasn't unbearable. Saw some amazing birds and had a black backed jackal visit at night

Such a nice, luxury camping, close to the big city. The owner is very friendly. The camping spots just outside the fence are great! We saw a lot of animals around our tent, a great experience, so cool to wake up and see jackals walk by!

Way nicer than I expected! Zebra, Impala and a jackal came into the camping area. The private ablutions are clean and awesome with the opening between the roof and wall. The water was warm and the lights worked perfectly. No electricity and little shade but some patches of grass.

The dorms themselves were not up to any standard what so ever, the mattresses were so thin that you were able to feel the wooden base of the bunk itself, multiple students actually came back with bed bug bites due to the lack of cleaning. People at the bottom bunk had to share a bunk with the people in the middle due to the fact that it was on the dirty floor. The food was not great at all with many complaints from students attending the camp. Some activity’s were quit boring like the nature tour per say we got. On the game drive students were not allowed to see certain animals because other groups did not see them as well. It was the small things like this that made the experience a poor one unfortunately

After coming with my class to the camp as a student. I can say that this place is of utmost professionalism when it comes to facilitators. We got Peter as one and he is an absolute beast when it comes to birds, trees and grasses. He knew the best spots in Dinokeng reserve for doing our fieldwork but also to get us the best animal sights and bird sightings. Although the rooms are shared with others it really helps with bonding and its what we needed to make new friends and meet new people. Food is prepared to a very good standard with clean kitchens and well prepared food. (But next time please give us more dessert) and also maybe just a little sprinkle of salt when making the food. Only complaint is with a single room mate but that isnt kwalatas fault. But apart from that they are a camp that is prepared to do everything to the bestest to their ability. Also maybe some hooks in the rooms to hand up some things such as jackets, towels and shirts but thats not a deal breaker. But all said and done thanks kwalata to one of the first camps with my class and to many many more good ones.

Nestled along the serene banks of the Magalies River, Sleepy River Caravan Park is a hidden gem in Gauteng that promises an unforgettable camping experience. Surrounded by lush natural vegetation and indigenous trees, this picturesque site offers ample shade for both picnic areas and caravan spots. The welcoming atmosphere created by Marie and her team ensures guests feel right at home, with clean facilities that enhance your stay.
Hospitality done right! Marie is most welcoming and ensures she gives you a good run down of the place. The bathrooms are clean and everything about the place is great. The perfect spot if you want to enjoy some camping in the Magalies, just a little bit away from the river bank. We enjoyed our own spot seperate from the rest of the camp under the pepper tree. Despite persistent rain, the scenery, wildlife and warm welcome made up for it. A must visit for the avid camper and nature/peace lover.

Great value for money. Mr Anton treated us to so well during our stay. Thanks to Franci and her team. The food was well thought out and more than enough. The kitchen staff were always on time. Thanks to Malefane for building us a great bonfire. We sang and danced around the fire. The water was also hot throughout our camp stay.

Nestled in the heart of nature, Cyara Lodge offers a perfect setting for Christian camps. During our recent retreat with the church group, we found this place to be a serene escape from the busyness of life. The rooms, provided a cozy and peaceful stay. The chapel became our spiritual haven, where heartfelt worship sessions and inspiring talks brought us closer to each other and to God. The staff's warmth and hospitality made our stay even better. The food was fantastic. In short, Cyara Lodge is a heavenly retreat where faith deepens, friendships blossom, and spirits are refreshed. If you seek a place to reconnect with God and fellow believers, look no further.

Wilge River Bush Camp is a serene escape nestled along the banks of the Wilgerivier, just about 50 km from Emalahleni. This tranquil campsite offers a perfect retreat from city life, where you can unwind while soaking in breathtaking views of clear blue skies and majestic mountains. The peaceful ambiance is complemented by delightful encounters with vervet monkeys and baboons that roam freely nearby. Guests can choose from various camping stands equipped with electricity and braai facilities, ensuring a comfortable stay.
With stunning camp sites which are lush, green and spacious. We camped there this weekend, which suited us as we got to enjoy the peace and quiet in the camp site. The ablution blocks are clean and stocked with toilet paper, and we have plenty of hot water The staff are very friendly and help full, they let you feel welcome Thoroughly enjoyable visit and we'll stay there again
Stanly E — Google review
Wilge River Bush Camp is not our scene. Tried it and we will not be back. Although effort is made to maintain the site area and facilities it is poorly done in comparison with other camp sites we have been too. We had to fetch our own braaier. No toilette paper when we arrived. The bathrooms next to the lapa is a shame to call a bathroom – poor water pressure not to mention the small gap you have to squeeze into getting to the mense urinal. Camp sites are smaller than expected for a ‘bush camp’. The drawn map of the facility is not close to real setup. The river is way below the campsites. You are mistaken if think you will see the river from any of the camp sites. If you love to party enjoy your load music this the place for you. The price per stand is way way over priced for what you get. Compare Wilge River Bush Camp with e.g. Wagondrift and you will see why. Both at the time of this writing are the same price per night. We did enjoy the table tennis, thanks.
Hennie P — Google review
We were a group that went camping. Stands decent size and we had access to electricity and a water point. Stands are grass and also has a braai. Ablutions were old but kept clean and all was in working order. Pool is a pleasure right next to river and a nice small shallow pool for the little ones. Overall a pleasant stay and I will go again.
Arno K — Google review
Very well kept camping grounds and facilities. Friendly and helpful staff. We had a blast crusing down the river and had great success with the fishing! Will definitely visit again soon.
Monique F — Google review
The campsite is very nice and peaceful. Activities available include birding and fishing. Walking can be done on the campsite but don't expect to hike far. A nice venue for a 20 minute stroll. It is not a massive camp site but a wonderful place to clutch-out for a weekend. The honesty shop is a really nice addition if you run out of wood or ice. The peace and quiet is what one would go there for. It is also dog friendly which I personally love.
Brendan H — Google review
Great place, great service, very relaxing in the bush with the river right there. Nice amenities available for free such as pool, lapa, table tennis. Not the most ideal place for bass or shore fishing as the river is very fast, but fly fishing would be great. Safety is good. I would recommend to anyone who wants to get away into the bush.
Phil P — Google review
Such a beautiful place! We had a peaceful time sitting by the river admiring the clear blue skies and beautiful mountains it's definitely a quiet place to go and get away from all the city noise. It was nice watching the vervet monkeys and baboons in the morning as they climb the trees and walk along the grass across from us. You can book a spot with electricity and a braai stand. The ablutions were clean and spotless. The water pressure was just right when taking a bath or shower. The onsite manager is very friendly and if there was a problem with something he would get it done immediately. We will definitely be visiting Wilge River Bush Camp again!
